Timbuk2 Review: An Expert‘s Guide After Testing 15+ Bags

timbuk2 travel shoulder bag

As someone who‘s tested over 2000 backpacks and bags during my 12 years in the gear industry, durability and practical functionality stand above all else for me. When exploring a new brand, I want to know – will this product last daily use for years to come? And does the design actually help organize gear and make life easier?

Most bags these days compromise, focusing more on style than substance. But occasionally you discover a diamond in the rough. For me, Timbuk2 bags deliver where others fall short.

I first stumbled on Timbuk2 5 years ago when researching messenger style shoulder bags. Their reputation intrigued me – founded 30 years ago to serve San Francisco bike couriers, the brand prided itself on withstanding punishing conditions. My interest was piqued to see if modern Timbuk2 gear maintained that relentless reliability.

Fast forward dozens of Timbuk2 packs tested later in every form – backpacks, rollers, briefcases and custom builds. I can conclusively say their bags stand the test of time thanks to smart design and battle ready fabrics. With added perks like lifetime warranties, I feel Timbuk2 also respects customer loyalty as much as durable construction.

In this comprehensive 3000+ word review, we‘ll break down everything Timbuk2 – from company background and manufacturing insights to an in-depth product analysis and purchasing recommendations customized to your needs and budget. Consider this your definitive guide on whether Timbuk2 bags justify premium pricing for long run value.

Overview of Timbuk2

Timbuk2 began in 1989 when San Francisco bike messenger Rob Honeycutt grew frustrated hauling deliveries across the city with makeshift bags. Finding little in the market addressing messenger needs for accessible storage and all weather reliability, Honeycutt decided to design his own.

Early Timbuk2 bags focused solely on functionality over flash, delivering solutions purpose built for urban navigation and hauling odd-sized items. Over 30 years later, that relentless pragmatism remains entwined in the brand‘s DNA even as designs expanded to everyday commuters and travelers.

But beyond reliable construction, Timbuk2 also seeks sustainability via domestic manufacturing programs reducing waste. They also offer custom tailored bags allowing you to dictate precise layouts and color schemes. We‘ll explore their personalization process later in this review.

For now, let‘s survey the current Timbuk2 lineup showcasing their flagship backpack offerings.

Timbuk2 All-Stars – Top Selling Backpack Models

Beyond backpacks, here‘s a quick primer on other Timbuk2 bag varieties:

Top Timbuk2 Categories

  • Messenger Bags: Original flagship – shoulder strap bags for cycling/walking
  • Travel Bags: Carry-on friendly rollers and duffels
  • Laptop Bags: Protective sleeves and briefcases
  • Accessories: Wallets, crossbody pouches, phone cases
  • Custom: Tailor most bags to your specifications

Next let‘s scrutinize vital performance metrics on some of their top sellers.

Timbuk2 Backpack Reviews

Getting heavy use out of your gear means choosing a pack offering both accessibility and organization. Unfortunately, I’ve discovered most urban commuter backpacks only succeed at one or the other. However Timbuk2 addresses both fronts well in their bag designs.

Based on my testing, these three packs stand above the competition for their unique balance of storage layouts and durable build quality. Let‘s explore what sets them apart.

Authority Pack Deluxe

  • Price: $139
  • Laptop Size: 17”
  • Volume: 28 Liters

The Authority remains Timbuk2‘s #1 best selling backpack for busy professionals and students hauling lots of tech. As a digital nomad myself testing laptop bags, the Authority‘s expansive 28 liter volume provides welcome flexibility without compromising on features.

Standout Features

  • Air mesh back panel keeps you cool during lengthy wear
  • Multiple interior pockets for gadget organization
  • Easy access dual side water bottle holsters
  • Convenient luggage passthrough for stacking bags

In my testing traversing airports, the Authority swallowed nearly a week’s worth of essentials with room to spare. Small front and top pockets made items like headphones and passports easily accessible. And the sturdy air mesh back panel helped keep me cool in summer heat.

For hauling camera gear, flash drives and a beefy laptop, I‘ve yet to find a backpack balancing features, storage, and durable fabrics as successfully. If you envision regular use lugging lots of equipment, the Authority helps make shouldering heavy tech burdens easier.

Timbuk2 Authority Backpack

Room for Improvement

I only have a few nitpicks on the Authority after extensive field testing:

  • When fully stuffed, retrieving items from the bottom becomes difficult
  • The water bottle pouches sag a bit when unfilled
  • I would welcome exterior Molle straps for attaching more gear

But for digital freedom fighters hauling critical gear in the field, the Authority remains my go-to for balancing utility, storage, and mobility. Well deserving of high marks.

Rogue Laptop Backpack

  • Laptop Size: 15"
  • Volume: 20 liters

Another Timbuk2 pack eating up lots of carry time during my testing is the Rogue.Sporting heritage styling reminiscent of the original 1989 messenger bag, the Rogue maintains that vintage look while upgrading features to meet urban explorer needs.

The 20 liter volume provides ample space for EDC items and gear I just don’t feel secure stashing in standard commuter packs. And the upgraded liner ensuring laptop and device safety helps ease any lingering concerns of breakage in the chaos of travel.

Let‘s unzip some positives of the Rogue backpack, as well as shortcomings I unearthed evaluating its daily performance over 6 months.

  • Vintage messenger style bag appeal
  • Protective laptop sleeve preventing device shocks
  • Pockets aplenty for pens, phones, and other small items
  • External webbing for carabiners and Issue cinches

In an era emphasizing sleek minimalism, the Rogue reminds us retro design endures for good reason. I dig the fast access laptop sleeve upfront making airport security checks drama free. And the customizable webbing appeals to my inner gear junky always discovering new items to strap on.

Durability remains top notch after regular use with no fabric tears or broken hardware to note. If style matters as much function for your EDC bag, Rogue brings both to the table while keeping essentials secure.

As much as I‘ve come to rely on the Rogue as daily driver bag, a couple nitpicks bear mentioning:

  • No water bottle pouches
  • Shoulder strap lacks sufficient padding
  • Excessive Velcro wears down after repeated use

Lack of water bottle storage surprised me given Timbuk2‘s roots serving thirsty bike couriers. And strap comfort issues arise after lengthy wear shouldering photography supplies or a stuffed pack. Padding there would be a welcome revision.

But considering its competitive price point and resilient construction, the vintage inspired Rogue keeps camera gear and personal items safe from harm while traversing the urban jungle. Another winner for fans of heritage styling and purpose-driven design.

Copilot Luggage Roller

  • Price: $249
  • Volume Options: 35L, 42L, 52L, 80L

In an era of battered wheeled luggage, the Copilot roller series reminds us quality matters when regular airline travel is the norm. While Timbuk2 markets these as adventure "duffel" bags, don‘t let that fool you. After a year of testing as my go-to carry-on, the thoughtfully designed Copilot stands up to punishing baggage handlers without failure.

Let‘s peek inside my real world usage notes elevating Copilot as my #1 gear transport companion.

  • Durable vacation-proof fabrics
  • Roomy 40 liter storage capacity
  • Smooth maneuvering spinner wheels
  • Convenient top and side grab handles
  • Hidden expandable storage flap

Flying with camera bodies, multiple lenses, flash rigs and a drone means watching most airline crews wrestle my luggage anxiously. But the Copilot‘s sturdy padded sides withstand abusive handling with aplomb. And the high quality wheels slice through terminals easily even when loaded with 50 lbs of gear.

Another high mark – the expertly stitched fabrics show no wear after 20 flights while comparable bags started fraying at the seams. Testers focused on long term ownership agree Copilot warrants the initial investment.

A few minor nitpicks worth mentioning:

  • Bulkier than traditional carry-on sizing
  • Shoulder straps sold separately
  • Heavier models can get unwieldy

With 360 degree spinning wheels and multiple grab handles, pushing Copilot through airports proves far easier than lifting. But best practice is keeping it under 50 lbs to avoid excessive stairwell strain.

And some may miss shoulder straps found on duffel models allowing backpack carry flexibility. Though packing cleverly frontloads weight for easy tilting on those last stair legs.

Nevertheless, for photographers living out of perpetually stuffed luggage, Copilot delivers the heirloom level quality we crave. I‘ll gladly pay a bit extra knowing my gear travels safer decade after decade in the company of Copilot.

Timbuk2 Custom Bag Program

Beyond their stock backpack offerings, Timbuk2 allows tailoring most of their bags to meet specialized storage needs. Everything from laptop backpacks to camera messenger bags to weekend luggage can be tweaked to suit preferences.

The custom process lets you dictate colors, fabrics, pocket layouts and extra bells and whistles. Best of all, customized bags are handmade to order right in Timbuk2‘s San Francisco factory. Allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.

How It Works

  • Select a base bag style: messenger, backpack, briefcase, etc
  • Choose individual component colors and materials
  • Modify pockets, flaps and zippers as needed
  • Add optional extras like reflectors or stabilizing straps
  • Provide payment details
  • Timbuk2 builds to order and ships when complete!

What truly sets their custom program above the competition is managing your bag down to finite details:

Customization Options Available

  • Favorite Fabrics
  • Binding Colors
  • Zipper Types
  • Laptop Sleeve Sizing
  • Buckle Styles
  • Accessory Loops
  • Reflective Hits
  • Premium Hardware Upgrades

Also worth noting, personalized bags ship free but still qualify for Timbuk2‘s lifetime warranty should durability issues emerge. Given my austerity testing gear to failure, that provides serious peace of mind.

So for photographers, pilots, students or other niche use case owners, skip the forgettable mass market packs and define something truly unique via customization. Just be prepared to spend $100+ tailoring a Timbuk2 bag to your lifestyle.

What Owners Have to Say

Before we conclude with purchasing recommendations, let‘s explore feedback from 230+ Timbuk2 customer reviews across their site and Amazon. What praises reoccur around these bags? And what complaints appear consistently signaling areas for product improvement?

In total, 75% of buyers rated Timbuk2 4 stars out of 5 on average. Owners clearly appreciate the functionality and design performance overall. But key highlights recurred regularly that I‘ll summarize below.

Most Helpful Positive Reviews

  • "Stands up to heavy daily use"
  • "Very comfortable, even heavy loads"
  • "Excellent laptop and gear protection"
  • "Lifetime warranty gives peace of mind"
  • "Great for work and travel"

Common Complaints

  • "Padding needs more reinforcement"
  • "Shoulder straps chafe without shirt"
  • "Big laptops push limits on size"
  • "Bottles don‘t fit well in side pockets"
"I purchased my Timbuk2 Copilot bag 5 years ago and it still looks and functions like new after using it on dozens of trips. Being stuffed under planes or tossed on luggage belts, it takes a beating with no signs of wear and tear. For frequent travelers wanting luggage able to survive baggage handlers, I couldn‘t recommend Copilot more strongly. It‘s worth the premium knowing this bag will serve me for 20+ years instead of falling apart every few trips like cheaper rollers."

The above review encapsulates recurring owner sentiments around longevity and quality shining through daily use and travel. For city dwellers and jetsetters wanting everyday carry solutions as durable as they are practical, Timbuk2 finds favor.

Yes, a few folks protest strap comfort issues without undershirts given the coarse bag fabric. And side pouches receive criticism struggling to handle oversized water bottles.

But overwhelmingly owners agree well designed, protective interiors and resilient outer shell construction enable Timbuk2 bags to endure situations that would crack competitors. And build that reliability around clever approaches simplifying organization and ease of access to your most vital carry items.

Is Timbuk2 Worth the Investment?

Considering their solutions focused design ethos and reputation for enduring quality, Timbuk2 bags justify their premium status compared to fast fashion competitors. Where others cut corners, this San Francisco brand employs durable fabrics designed to withstand years of urban navigation.

They also back that reliability with one of the strongest warranty programs in the industry. Bags and packs made today still qualify for free repair or replacements through the lifetime of the original owner. I‘m unaware of any major brand offering similar consumer peace of mind.

When combined with purpose-built feature sets benefitting commuters and travelers frequenting airports and desk jobs alike, Timbuk2 delivers exceptional value. Students on budgets may still prefer more economic brands with basic organizational layouts.

But for mobile professionals, creative entrepreneurs and jetsetters wanting carry solutions to outlast years not months of peripatetic living, Timbuk2 warrants consideration. Their specialized designs marry resilient fabrics and stability focus with accessibility improving your daily workflows.

Ultimately if you seek thoughtfully crafted bags delivering heirloom level longevity, functionality and individual customization, give Timbuk2 an audition. I think you’ll discover their solutions up to the daily task whether across campus or continents.

Where To Buy Timbuk2 + Discounts

Timbuk2 primarily sells direct to consumers through their own website at timbuk2.com with free returns in store credit. Though they lack a traditional money back guarantee beyond initial 30 days for a full refund.

Many third party online retailers also stock Timbuk2 gear including Amazon, Backcountry, Moosejaw, Clever Training and more. Comparison shop for best deals.

For locals in major cities like NYC, Chicago and San Francisco, brick and mortar Timbuk2 stores allow try before you buy evaluations to test bag comfort and capacity.

When browsing Timbuk2.com specifically, keep an eye out for regular sales knocking 40% off previous season items along with other rotating promotions:

  • New email subscriber discount (10% off)
  • Custom bag sales (20% off)
  • Seasonal events (Black Friday, Memorial Day, etc)

And remember, even deeply discounted bags qualify for their lifetime warranty should defects emerge. So no compromise on quality when buying on budget.

I hope this XXL guide steers you to the perfect Timbuk2 bag fitting both your carry needs and longterm ownership goals. Never settle for flimsy gear compromising your pursuits. Timbuk2 delivers daily solutions outdoor hustlers can rely on year after year, trip after trip. Let me know on Twitter @profbagfinder if you have any other questions!

Full Review

We’re all in agreement that a quality duffel bag can be a great travel companion, right? Well, Timbuk2 is also in agreement—and we know that because they’ve set out to compete with the best of the best by creating their Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel.

This 45-liter duffel-style backpack comes from the same brand that brought us gear like the Wander Pack (the previous iteration of this bag) and the La Banane Fanny Pack . Started by a bike messenger in San Francisco, Timbuk2 rolled out its first messenger bag 30 years ago and now boasts a variety of totes, travel packs, camera bags and more.

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel

Now, we should note right off the bat that this bag is called a “duffel-style backpack,” and that wording is very intentional. This is not a duffel-backpack-hybrid, meaning it really is just a duffel bag with backpack straps—and that’s it. It does not have a traditional over-the-shoulder strap like you’ll find on most duffels. Instead, it merely has a side grab-handle—meaning you can carry the bag in backpack mode or “briefcase mode” by holding it with the handle.

As far as we’re concerned, calling this bag a “duffel” is a bit of a stretch. It does have the shape of a duffel, but to us, a duffel needs to have that single strap that you can quickly and easily swing over one shoulder. And while the side handle does let you carry it like a briefcase, that feature is found on the majority of travel packs anyway—so it’s nothing new, as far as we’re concerned. That being said, it does have the look and feel of a duffel. Just one that sits on your back.

We apologize for nitpicking right out of the gate, but we just had to get that out of the way. For the most part, we’re treating this bag as a backpack. And after testing the Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel for two weeks in Detroit and Minneapolis, we’re here to give you all the details you’ll need to see if it’s right for you.

Materials & Aesthetic

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel Materials

At some point, however, someone realized that PVC is slightly carcinogenic. Whoopsie.

As a result, “Big Vinyl” (not a thing, but we’re making it a thing) decided to create a new version of PVC that wouldn’t give you cancer. They came up with polyethylene vinyl acetate (PEVA), which is basically the same thing but it’s non-carcinogenic. Although, it’s still apparently up for debate whether it’s entirely toxic-free or not (and we’re not going to get into that debate). Either way, it’s not going to give you cancer and it’s more or less free of toxins.

We should also clarify that although PVC is technically a carcinogen, its danger seems to be quite minimal—so no need to worry about ditching all your PVC products.

History aside, this fabric has a tarp-like feel and, while not incredibly durable on its own, is bolstered by a nice ripstop pattern that elevates it from “shower curtain material” to “travel backpack material.” The ripstop pattern means that if you do get a rip or tear, it shouldn’t get any bigger. This fabric is also similar to the material used on the Timbuk2 Wander Pack , which we’ve previously reviewed. We’re glad to report that this fabric does seem a bit more robust than its predecessor, which blemished quite easily.

At the time of this review, the Impulse is available in just one color—black—and we are totally cool with that. We think it looks good, and the black-on-black Timbuk2 wordmark on the front with “San Francisco” below it is tasteful and blends in well.

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel Shoulder Strap

Keep in mind that while the Impulse wears its San Francisco roots proudly (it was designed there), the bag is made in Indonesia.

Generally speaking, we think this bag looks pretty slick—especially for a pack with a 45-liter capacity. Some of these larger travel bags can start looking a bit bulky, but we think the Impulse looks good at this size.

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel Buckle

Exterior Components

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel Sternum Strap

Moving down the straps, an elastic band at the front of the straps can be used to attach a carabiner or additional accessories. The MOLLE-like webbing below this can be used to attach the sternum strap or anything else you might need to keep handy.

The Impulse’s sternum strap does a great job at helping to distribute weight as you’re carrying the pack around. That said, we have some gripes with the way it’s attached. We usually prefer something with a more permanent attachment, because it’s just too easy for this to slip in and out of that webbing. (Trust us; we’ve lost many a sternum strap this way!) It’s not quite as bad as other designs we’ve tested that get looser even quicker, but it’s still a risk we’d rather not take.

We’re happy to give credit where credit is due, though, and Timbuk2 definitely came through with some significant improvements over its Wander pack.

On that bag, a button slid over the strap to attach it to the sternum strap—and this fell off super easily. While it’s still not perfect, the Impulse is a massive improvement.

The strap adjusters on this bag are pretty standard, and the same goes for the elastic keepers holding the excess strap in place, which help provide a cleaner look.

The entire strap system comes together with a small Duraflex gatekeeper buckle on the bottom, which can be detached to stow the shoulder straps away behind the back panel. Since this is the same way the Timbuk2 Wander pack attaches, we should point out that our three months of heavy testing with the Wander found that these straps randomly disengaged on a couple of occasions while being lifted at full capacity.

With that in mind, the small gatekeeper strap on the Impulse doesn’t seem like it’s quite enough to carry 45 liters comfortably—and, of course, randomly disengaging isn’t something anyone has time for. Since the exact same buckle failed on the Wander, we’re not sure why Timbuk2 didn’t change the buckle on this new iteration.

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel Strap Attachment Points

On the plus side, there are two different lash points where you can attach the gatekeepr strap—one that offers a wider carry and another for a more duffel-style carry. For the duffel-style carry, the attachment point is parallel with the top of the straps so it’ll be a little closer to your body and a little easier to carry from the straps.

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel Hip Belt

The streamlined size of the Impulse hip belt makes a lot of sense for urban travel. Hip belts can be massive on some travel bags, and that can pose a problem for tight spaces like a public bus or airplane aisle (a chance to not be the one whacking everyone as you board—nice!). It’s also convenient that you can just take the attachment off when you don’t want it in the way.

While wearing the Timbuk2 Impulse, the user’s right side features a shallow mesh pocket that’s better for things you maybe wouldn’t mind losing (like napkins or tissues, perhaps?). The left-hand side, meanwhile, offers a zippered compartment on the hip belt that’s ideal for smaller and more flexible items (nothing too rigid, or you’ll affect how it wears). We love having a quick-access pocket right near your hip, where it’s convenient and easy to access while wearing the pack.

Wrapping up the harness system, the back features some nicely padded mesh. There’s also a semi-stiff frame sheet, which is a little bit flimsy, but we’re glad Timbuk2 included it since some duffel-style travel backpacks don’t have this. You can also hide the straps along the back if you want to stow them away.

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel Back Panel

The rest of the bag is pretty simple and utilitarian. On the top side and wearer’s right-hand side you’ll find densely padded foam grab handles, which always come in handy in transit. We couldn’t help but wonder, though, why this higher density padding wasn’t used in the shoulder straps as well.

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel Compression Strap

On the front of the bag, we’ve got two rows of MOLLE-like webbing; two regular-size on the left and right, and then one larger one on the front. This can be used for attaching a carabiner clip or any other accessories you’d like to add to your bag.

Inside the Pack

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel Top Pocket

On the top flap, you’ll find a mesh pocket that can be used for securing items in place. We do wish there were some dividers here to make it slightly more usable, but it’s still a nice feature.

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel Top Pocket

The zippers on the Timbuk2 Impulse have given us some trouble during our testing. Every zipper on the bag is pretty sticky, especially when you go around the curves of the pack. We’ve noticed this is a pattern on bags that have a stiffer, tarp-like material on the exterior—and when you pair that with a curve, the stickiness only gets worse.

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel Zippers

At the top, a metal key clip is attached to an intensely fluorescent yellow ribbon. We like that the keychain here is metal, as most other packs just go with plastic. It’s all about those little details, people!

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel Water Bottle Pocket

One thing to keep in mind about the laptop compartment is that since it opens from the side, it’s a bit tougher to access while you’re sitting on an airplane or in an otherwise tight situation. Since we’ve been comparing the Impulse pack to its Wander predecessor, you should know that the Wander’s laptop compartment is accessible from the top.

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel Main Compartment

Durability & Testing

At the time of this review, we’ve been testing the Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel for about two weeks in Detroit and Minneapolis.

We’ve found it to be a pretty good travel companion so far. Though it has only picked up minimal dirt and dust, the material on the outside is really easy to wash and clean.

The large top drop pocket has been great on the road. Simply open it up, dump whatever you want in there, and it’s good to go and easy to access when you need it.

In terms of access, though, we’ve had a few issues. Getting into the pack can be a little slower than we’d like due to the sticky zippers, and this can be frustrating when you’re trying to quickly grab your wallet to pay for coffee or unload your tech to set up for a meeting. We often found ourselves wishing for some improved zippers on this bag.

Timbuk2 Impulse Travel Backpack Duffel in Detroit

But it doesn’t end there. The harness system on this bag isn’t very comfortable when the bag is full, and we’re not exactly thrilled about carrying it for longer distances. The weird thing is that the top and side grab-handles have some great high-density foam… We think if Timbuk2 had just used that foam on the shoulder straps, they’d be a lot better—but maybe we’re missing something.

And finally, this bag is labeled as a duffel-style backpack, but it’s really just a duffel with backpack straps—and not much else. We can see the value in having a backpack that also functions as an over-the-shoulder duffel…but this bag doesn’t do that. In reality, it doesn’t function terribly well as a backpack and it doesn’t function terribly well as a duffel. If you need to carry heavy loads over long distances, you’d almost always be better off getting a full-blown travel backpack.

Usage Timeline

Condition: Excellent

  • Exterior material doesn’t seem like it’ll scuff up quite as much as the previous release last year – the Wander Pack.
  • Still the same strap attachments, which we had some trouble with randomly falling off in our Wander Pack review.
  • We dig the simplicity of the pockets and the shoe compartment on the bottom.

Material doesn’t pick up much dust or dirt and is easy to clean

Condition: Fine

The-Ultimate-Guide-to-the-Worlds-Best-Messenger-and-Shoulder-Bags

The Best Messenger Bags for Tech, Travel, and EDC (2023)

  • Buyers Guide

Backpacks are considered the carry comfort kings. Duffels are the gear haulers. But when it comes to access and agility, the best messenger bags and shoulder bags step up for their time to shine. For many users, crossbody bags are go-to choices for quick access to gear on the move. They also tend to draw people who want to carry smaller loads or shed unnecessary carry bulk. And they also tend to get the nod of approval in work settings, where in many cases they bring a more formal and professional feel to your work setup than a backpack.

Best messenger bags: WP Standard Vintage Leather Messenger Bag

Messengers vs shoulder bags

So you might have heard the terms ‘messenger’ and ‘shoulder bag’ used interchangeably. But they aren’t actually the same thing. Messengers tend to be associated with more active use (think bags used by bicycle messengers), while shoulder bags play well in sedate settings. Features such as stabilizer straps are more common in messengers (again, to assist in load stability during active use). And in general messengers will wrap round the body more (a rigid design isn’t great if you’re pounding the pedals during a bike ride or trying to move nimbly in outdoor environments). That doesn’t mean you can’t use messengers in less strenuous settings or find shoulder bags that will tackle a little adventure now and then.

So with all of that in mind, what is a good brand of messenger bag? We know it can be time-consuming to search through countless bag options. So we’re shouldering the load by rounding up some of the best messenger bags and shoulder bags to suit different needs and settings. But, hey, it’s worth noting most of the below bags cross categories. They’re not only suited to certain needs, but they’re versatile too. Win!

The bag’s main compartment has a padded 10″ tablet sleeve and there are plenty of pockets in the front compartment to organize small essentials.

Best heritage-style shoulder bag

Wp standard meridian messenger bag (us$348).

WP Standard Meridian Messenger

If you have a soft spot for leather carry, it’s hard not to be drawn towards WP Standard’s gear. They do a darn fine job of combining old-school charm and modern-day functionality. Key Considerations When Choosing Your Bag

Ultimately, a lot of factors come into play to determine where messengers and shoulder bags will excel. Check out these tips on what to look for when choosing your ideal shoulder or messenger bag.

If you need a splash of fashion with your function, you may be wondering, are messenger bags still cool? Of course they are! And are messenger bags unisex? For the most part, yes. But this incredibly popular carry category comes in a great variety of styles, colorways, and materials to cater to a wide range of tastes and needs. So to help you choose, it’s useful to think about where you’ll be using the bag.

Do you need it for work purposes? If so, is your work environment smart-casual or formal? In these cases, understated colorways like black, gray, navy, or tan will blend in better (no matter how much you may be digging that blazing orange, it’s best saved for after-work hours). Clean silhouettes or soft draping designs will also be easier to fit in formal environments than “busy” designs that draw the eye (but not for the right reasons). If you won’t be using the bag for work purposes (or your work environment is more laid-back), you’ve got a little more freedom in the style department. Yep, bring on that blazing orange…

United By Blue Lakeland Laptop Bag

Size and weight

Obviously your messenger or shoulder bag needs to be large enough to hold all the gear you need it to. But you’ll want to be careful here. The bigger the bag is, the more bulk you’ll be carrying around. Ask yourself if the added space is worth the increased weight and bulk penalty. Maybe you need it or really value the ability to accommodate a variety of loads from one day to the next. But if you tend to carry a set amount of gear, picking a bag that’s just big enough without adding unnecessary weight may be a better option.

For example, are messenger bags good for laptops? Some are much better suited to tech carry than others and will be sized accordingly to fit different devices. They may also have additional features such as padded sleeves that add to the bulk. Potentially increased size and bulk is a worthy trade-off if you regularly carry a laptop but unnecessary if you don’t.

So you’ve got a bag that’s the right size and suits your style, but how about getting to your gear? One of the key advantages of messengers and shoulder bags over other types of carry is the on-body access they provide. The ability to easily swing them round to your front to get to frequently used essentials or to access gear from the main compartment without having to remove the bag from your shoulder. Features such as quick-release shoulder straps, exterior pockets, magnetic or one-handed flap buckles, and multiple access points to the main compartment will help you get to gear in a jiffy.

Are you going to be putting your bag through the wringer on regular cycle commutes ? Shoving it in and out of overhead compartments or heading off into the wilderness for a day of exploring trails or outdoor photography? The more demanding you are on your bag, the tougher it will need to be. Abrasion-resistant and water-resistant materials along with trusty construction will help your bag cope when the going gets tough. Great for an EDC messenger bag that needs to endure demanding use or a travel messenger bag you can rely on to keep going strong. If your bag will be living a more relaxed or sheltered life, you can dial back on the durability, which may help you cut some weight.

Best Messenger Bags: Mission Workshop Monty Advanced

While shoulder bags and messengers don’t offer the same level of load distribution that backpacks do, they can still be comfortable to carry. Keep an eye out for a wide shoulder strap that will help spread the load a little, as well as padding on the strap to help enhance comfort. For more active use your chosen bag should offer good breathability in the back panel, a design that hugs the body, and a stabilizer strap or waist belt to help secure the load. And carry handles come in useful too when you want to give your shoulder a breather or are carrying the bag over shorter distances or in more formal environments.

Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag review: Stylish update to an urban icon

Roman Loyola

Expert's Rating

  • Great design and style
  • Top-notch quality
  • Quick and easy access to what’s inside
  • Customizable
  • Single strap carrying may not be comfortable
  • Large size doesn’t hold a 16-inch laptop snugly

Our Verdict

The Classic Messenger Bag is a top-quality, stylish bag, designed with plenty of pockets and compartments for different types of stuff. While the bag is a great general carry-all, it’s ideal for someone who needs quick access to what’s inside.

Best Prices Today: Classic Messenger Bag

There was a time when a trip downtown was filled with the hustle and bustle of people. And a lot of those people sported Timbuk2’s Classic Messenger Bag–not just bicycle messengers, but also commuters going to work, tourists sightseeing, and anyone else trying to get where they need to go. The Classic Messenger Bag became more than just a bag. It became an urban icon.

Times change, though. Downtown isn’t what it used to be–there are fewer people going to the office, delivery from Uber and DoorDash has replaced bike messengers, and tourists aren’t packing the street like they once were. Timbuktu’s Classic Messenger Bag has changed, too, and while it was always a great bag, it’s become even more versatile for the times when you go out–downtown, the suburbs, the park, the beach, on campus, wherever.

Classic Messenger Bag design

What makes the Classic Messenger Bag so appealing is that it’s designed for quick and easy access. Just flip open the front flap and your stuff is within easy reach. Close the front flap and it’s secured with Velcro and a couple of adjustable latches.

I tested the large Classic Messenger Bag, which has plenty of room inside for a 16-inch MacBook Pro and other gear, so much room that it can slide back and forth in the bag. You might find that unsettling, though, so for a snug laptop fit, consider the medium or small sizes.

Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag inside

The large size of the Classic Messenger Bag doesn’t hold a 14-inch MacBook Pro (pictured) or 16-inch laptop snugly. If a snug fit is what you prefer, look at the small or medium sizes.

 width=

The inside has three large compartments, with the middle section ideal for a laptop, tablet, or documentation. The front compartment is a better fit for bulky items, like shoes, a water bottle, or boxes. The back compartment is where everything in-between can go. There’s also a four-pocket section for items like pens, USB drives, etc. and a zippered pocket. It’s not full of holders like some backpacks or other bags, which may or may not be to your liking.

Underneath the front flap is what Timbuk2 calls a Napoleon pocket. On the large and medium bags, it has zippers on each side, and you can reach this pocket through the side openings when the front flap is latched. It’s a great place to put keys, a phone, or an earphone charging case, anything you need on hand but don’t want to have to go inside the main part of the bag. Again, it’s all about quick access.

Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag napoleon pocket

The Napoleon Pocket can be accessed while the front flap is closed.

 width=

The Classic Messenger Bag is made of Eco Cordura, a synthetic material made using recycled materials. It’s durable and weatherproof, and the interior has been upgraded with a Thermoplastic Polyurethane waterproof liner. The bag is available in a wide variety of colors, and customers can personalize their bag by picking different color panels.

Carrying the Classic Messenger Bag

The Classic Messenger Bag has always had a single strap, but Tikbuk2 redesigned it with sateen webbing that’s soft and durable, and it can be removed and switched for left- or right-handed wearing. The adjustment buckle has also been redesigned; in the prior version, it was plastic, but now it’s aluminum, which makes it feel sturdier as you adjust it.

timbuk2 adjustment buckle

The adjustment buckle works effortlessly for tightening or loosening the carrying strap.

 width=

The main issue some people have with messenger bags in general is that a single strap means there’s a single pressure point on one shoulder. Timbuk2 includes an Ortholite shoulder strap to alleviate the pressure a bit, but there’s no way of getting around the fact that it fits differently from a backpack. Depending on what you carry, it may not be comfortable, so if you’ve never used a messenger bag before, it’s a good idea to see how it fits before buying.

The straps for the flap latches have reflective tabs to make you more visible in the dark. When customizing a bag, Timbuk2 offers three reflective fabrics for the body panels of the bag to make yourself even more visible if you’d like.

Should you buy the Classic Messenger Bag?

Even though the urban landscape has changed, the Classic Messenger Bag endures. It’s a top-quality, stylish bag, designed with plenty of pockets and compartments for different types of stuff. While the bag is a great general carry-all, it’s ideal for someone who needs quick access to what’s inside. But if your primary item is a laptop, look at the medium or small sizes.

The Best Messenger Bags of 2024

More practical than a tote bag, and more accessible than a backpack, the timeless messenger bag continues to be our choice for our daily carry.  We know it can be overwhelming to have so many different bags for different purposes, and we also know we're not the only ones with backpacks, briefcases, purses, tote bags, and shopping bags starting to feel like they are taking over our closets. While each of these products has a time and a place, the messenger bag combines the best of many.

These over-the-shoulder bags are synonymous with commuting and are more polished than a backpack, provide easy access to their interior, are perfect for holding laptops and notebooks, cameras, or other small accessories, and are also great for travel, whether that be just to the coffee shop or overseas.

While many messenger bags may seem the same, some bags have features that will make them more suited to your needs or lifestyle like waterproofing, customizable straps, or specific organizational features. Our expert gear testers have done all the legwork for you, and have identified 10 of the best messenger bags on the market today to thoroughly test for this guide.

We reviewed these bags for over a month, from the small town of Bishop, California to commutes in the big city of Los Angeles. We took each of them out on bike rides for a total of 4 miles minimum, loaded them up and walked with them a mile to the local coffee shop, and scrutinized the strengths and weaknesses of their organizational features to help you decide which bag might best suit your needs.

Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag

  • Volume 16 L (medium size)
  • Material Eco Cordura, 70D waterproof TPU liner
  • Waterproofing Yes
  • Weight 2 lbs., 3.2 oz. (medium size)
  • Dimensions 13.4" x 7.28" x 12.8"
  • Comfortable and easily-adjustable shoulder strap
  • Many organizational features
  • Water-resistant
  • Can get front heavy
  • Internal water bottle holders can take up a lot of interior space

When you think of a messenger bag, something like the Timbuk2 Classic ($130) is probably what comes to mind. It is, indeed, "classic" and has definite "bike-messenger" vibes. This updated version also comes in a lot of fun colorways so you can find one that suits your style. There are so many things we love about this bag - it's affordable, weather-resistant, and simple but with many thoughtful organizational features hidden under the flap making it a cut above the rest.

Designed to be carried in a traditional messenger bag style, this crossbody bag sits diagonally across your back and has a comfortable shoulder strap with some padding and easy adjustability via a smooth buckle. The strap can also be switched from left to right shoulder, a feature its previous version did not have and is much welcomed in this updated version.

The Classic has a weather-resistant exterior as well as a waterproof liner to help shed moisture (check out the Mission Workshop Khyte if you want an even more water-resistant bag). Underneath the front flap, there is a unique panel of pockets to help organize your small items.

The interior of the bag hosts a main compartment, plus a hidden pocket for valuables and even more small pouches to keep things neat and tidy. Two water bottle pockets are featured on either side of the interior, and finally, a dedicated laptop sleeve holds up to a 16" laptop at the back of the bag. This bag comes in four sizes which further allows you to customize what will best suit your needs.

Since so many organizational pockets are towards the front of the bag, we found it can get awkwardly front-heavy, especially if you don't have a laptop in the back to balance things out. And if you actually do put two water bottles in the interior, there quickly becomes a small amount of space left for things like Tupperware, headphones, layers, etc.

Our testers found themselves wishing there was a small water bottle holder on the outside of the bag instead, like on the Topo Designs Mountain Cross Bag , so there would be more room in the main compartment for other things. But we can't deny that this keeps things more streamlined, which is a nice feeling.

This 16-liter Timbuk2 Classic bag has a lot going on, which makes it a great choice for those who like to keep things organized with dedicated pockets and appreciate a smaller size that does not weigh them down on their bike commute.

Carhartt Messenger Bag

  • Material 500-denier Cordura ripstop nylon with Rain Defender durable water repellant
  • Dimensions 18.25" x 12.5" x 7"
  • Just enough organizational features
  • Padded laptop compartment
  • Durable materials
  • Lacks structure
  • Lacks additional padding
  • Utilitarian style

If you’re hesitant to drop over $100 on a messenger bag, but don't want to sacrifice the perks that come with a more expensive bag, enter the Carhartt Messenger Bag ($75). This 500-denier nylon bag is simple in design but has enough features that make it well worth the price. Carhartt is known for its rugged, quality clothing and accessories, and this bag is no exception.

Some messenger bags, like the Mission Workshop Khyte or the Mission Workshop Monty , have so many pockets and pouches it can be a little overwhelming. But this bag from Carhartt seems to have just the right amount of pockets to keep things simple but effective.

A zippered, padded back pocket fits up to a 15" laptop. The main compartment has some mesh zippered pockets on its backside and some pouch organizers with a hidden pocket in the front. And there are two stash pouches underneath the front flap of the bag for quick access to items like your phone or wallet.

The bag’s sleek design makes it easy to carry while still offering ample storage capacity. However, it lacks any internal structure, which can make it feel more floppy when it's not fully packed. Our reviewers found that even though there is a lightly padded laptop compartment, there is no extra padding anywhere else on the bag, which means you want to be careful when setting it down if you are carrying expensive electronics.

We wish there was a structured bottom with some padding; then, we would really love this bag. Despite this small setback, the Carhartt Messenger Bag is a great budget-friendly pick for someone who wants a decent messenger bag without having to splurge.

Mission Workshop Monty

  • Volume 21 L
  • Material 1000D nylon
  • Weight 2 lbs., 12 oz.
  • Dimensions 16" x 10" x 5"
  • Spacious capacity
  • Comfortable padded shoulder strap
  • Weatherproofing
  • High quality materials
  • Large for the average daily driver

Best described as a rugged, urban bike commuting bag, the Mission Workshop Monty ($220) is ready to go wherever you need to go, no matter the conditions. The quality of this bag is high, as evidenced by the burly 1000-denier Cordura shell and ripstop nylon with fully waterproof TPU backing for the interior.

The top can be used in a traditional flap-down fashion or affixed with Velcro for a rolled-up top configuration, which allows you to fill the bag to the brim. Generous padding on the strap, a large aluminum buckle for easy adjustment, and a spacious interior with nice organizational features make this a great pick for the urban bike commuter.

Our testers were seriously impressed with the capacity of this bag, with a whole 21 liters of volume that provides ample room for a 15" laptop in the main compartment with plenty of space left over for books and accessories. There is a front zippered pocket with two smaller internal pockets for easy access to smaller items like a phone or wallet, and it hosts a waterproof zipper as well that is protected from the elements by the heavy-duty front flap.

We loaded it up and biked four miles around town to test its comfort level and ergonomics, and found the padded shoulder strap to ease the burden of the load quite well. A cross-chest stabilizing strap also allows you to cinch the Mission Workshop Monty closer to your body, distributing the weight better through your torso. You can also affix the shoulder strap to the left or right side of your body, and the adjustment buckle on the front is one of the easiest to use we've tested.

We are serious when we say we love the buckle. It makes throwing this bag over your shoulder and adjusting it quickly on the go a breeze and feels premium in design. Because of this strap, and how comfortable this bag is to wear while riding, it's the best bike messenger bag in our lineup. If you are looking to spend a bit less money, the Osprey Metron 18 Messenger is another contender for this title, though it has less volume.

Osprey Metron 18 Messenger

  • Volume 18 L
  • Material 500D nylon, DWR finish
  • Weight 2 lbs., 3.2 oz.
  • Dimensions 7" x 18.9" x 11.8"
  • Made to comfortably carry while riding
  • Padded strap
  • Comes with additional rain cover
  • Can't customize strap to right or left shoulder
  • Smaller size

While you can use the Osprey Metron 18 Messenger ($120) as a regular bag, it is truly designed with the bike commuter in mind. Made to wear cross-body with the bag riding high on your back, it's ergonomic for bike travel and won't hang awkwardly to your side as some other bags might. It comes flush with bike-commute-specific features, such as an included rain cover, a loop to attach a light, and reflective prints and zipper pulls for enhanced visibility.

This bag is on the smaller side, but that makes it easier to carry in our testers' opinions. The wide, padded shoulder strap allows you to carry a load comfortably, and an included sternum strap helps keep the bag in place and more secure on your torso.

Because it's designed to be worn high on your back, Osprey, true to its outdoor roots, made sure to use its AirScape material on the back panel to enhance breathability. Inside, there is room for a 16" laptop and a couple of books/notebooks, and the front pocket has mesh organizer sleeves and padded drop-in pockets for smaller accessories.

18 liters isn't enough for other bulky items like extra clothing or cameras, so the Osprey Metron 18 Messenger is designed to carry just a few essentials. The shoulder strap cannot be customized to carry on either shoulder and thus favors right-handed folks, which is something to consider before purchasing. There is also a curious strap with a hook that hangs down and doesn't seem to serve much of a purpose, which could be annoying to some.

Timbuk2 Closer Laptop Briefcase

  • Volume 10 L
  • Material 100% recycled nylon
  • Dimensions 13" x 15.4" x 3.1"
  • Sleek design
  • High quality, recycled materials
  • Laptop sleeve only fits up to 15" device
  • Small capacity

The Timbuk2 Closer Laptop Briefcase ($159) is a sleek and functional accessory for the modern professional. Boasting a minimalist design with clean lines and durable materials, this bag combines style with practicality so you can carry a more comfortable bag without having to resort to a stuffy briefcase.

Timbuk2 takes the classic briefcase design and elevates it for the modern workplace with the Closer. Any good modern-day messenger bag needs protection for electronics, and this one has a padded sleeve that will fit up to a 15" laptop. The flap is also height adjustable, so your bag can accommodate taller items like portfolios or documents that can't fit horizontally. Throw in some small organizer pockets, an exterior water bottle holder, a removable shoulder strap, and a comfortable, padded handle and you've got yourself a great bag.

Our testers especially loved the slick silver buckles that have smooth clipping action and also bring a more upscale look to this bag. Additionally, the Closer is very versatile, as it can be carried as a briefcase, worn over the shoulder, and worn crossbody on your commute. Since we loved the Timbuk2 Classic as our overall favorite, we weren't surprised that the Closer carries just as comfortably. Staying true to its bike messenger roots, Timbuk2 managed to make an office bag that can also ride with you.

This bag is also one of the smaller ones we tested, with a total volume of only 10 liters, which makes it easy to carry the essentials and retain a sleek look. However, this means there isn't much room for bulkier items you may need, like clothing. We were also disappointed that the laptop compartment can't fit a 16" model. We were able to fit one into the main compartment without issue, but then we'd advise using a padded sleeve or case for extra protection.

Overall, the Timbuk2 Closer Laptop Briefcase Bag offers a winning combination of style and functionality for the modern-day office goer. Whether you’re heading to work or embarking on a business trip, this bag has you covered.

Peak Design Everyday Messenger

  • Volume 13 L
  • Material 400D outer, DWR finish, 900D waterproof bottom liner
  • Dimensions 14.2" x 15.5" x 7.5"
  • Made for photographers
  • Internal customizable dividers
  • Stiff which makes it easy to get in and out of
  • Doesn't come with a rain cover
  • Can feel bulky for an everyday carry
  • On the pricier side

While many messenger bags can fit a camera, not all are designed specifically for that function. Enter the Peak Design Everyday Messenger ($230). This 13-liter bag is stiff and structured, with internal, removable dividers customizable for your camera, lenses, and other accessories. The shell is made with 100% recycled 400-denier fabric coated with DWR, and a 900-denier waterproof bottom liner. We would love to see a bag like this come with an included rain cover, however, to really protect your expensive camera equipment, and this is something to consider.

While this bag is on the pricey side, it has a lot of features that make it worth the cost in our opinion. The closure system has four rungs with magnetized clips that can easily be operated one-handed. Inside the main compartment are padded Velcro dividers to keep your camera and lenses separated, organized, and protected.

A front pocket allows you to store smaller items like SD card cases, hard drives, charging cables, notebooks, and whatever else you may need. A laptop sleeve fits a 13" laptop, and two zippered external pockets on either side of the bag allow you to stash your wallet, phone, or keys away from the main compartment for easy access.

While the stiffness of the Peak Design Everyday Messenger is amazing for easy access to your camera equipment, especially if you're running around changing lenses, it can make the bag slightly awkward to carry crossbody. It can feel bulky and isn't the best for crossbody use, and carrying it around on crowded subways or through narrow spaces feels slightly cumbersome.

And while the closure system allows you to dial in the lid of the bag to accommodate taller items, if it is clipped to the highest rung, there is a lot of space on the sides where small items could potentially fall out, or water could get in during a rain storm.

Mission Workshop Khyte

  • Volume 24 L
  • Material HT500 nylon outer, MultiCam Black Cordura, VX-21
  • Weight 2 lbs., 9.9 oz.
  • Dimensions 21" x 14" x 6"
  • Two-layer waterproof construction
  • Thoughtful organizational features
  • Ability to add additional tech pouches/accessories
  • Can get heavy
  • Must purchase better shoulder strap for increased comfort

A premium messenger bag with serious waterproof capabilities, the Mission Work shop Khyte ($390) is designed to keep your gear dry without sacrificing its urban appeal. Best described as a rugged hauler made with protecting your tech in mind, if you're willing to splurge you'll walk away with something that could become your new everyday commuter bag.

The Khyte is a large messenger, with 24 liters of space and features that are deliberate and well thought out. A dedicated waterproof sleeve for your laptop allows you to access it without having to dig into the main compartment and fits up to a 16" model. This bag keeps the main compartment as a simple, open space to fill with bulky items like a water bottle, jacket, camera, or whatever else you might be carrying.

The front flap has a pocket under a flap of fabric is lined with microfiber for your phone or glasses and is a feature Miya, our lead reviewer, especially appreciated as she has a bad habit of never carrying her glasses case with her anywhere.

Underneath the front flap is a large organizational pocket for all your small items and accessories, as well as webbing attachments for additional tech pouches you can purchase to expand the capacity of this bag even more. There is also webbing on the side of the bag you could use to affix a water bottle holder or some other sort of pouch.

Having the ability to customize this bag is unique, but can quickly become more expensive. This could also cause you to load down an already large bag with more gear, making it heavier to carry. Our testers seemed to prefer smaller bags in the 15-18 liter range, like the Aer Commuter Brief 2 or Osprey Metron 18 , solely because carrying a heavy bag over your shoulder for long periods of time can become pretty uncomfortable. The strap on the Khyte is pretty basic, and while you can purchase the Deluxe Messenger Strap from Mission Workshop for an extra $50, we would expect that this would already be included with such an expensive bag.

With a two-layer waterproof construction, flaps and sleeves to keep moisture out, and detail-oriented organizational features, the Mission Workshop Khyt e is great for the commuter who likes to carry a lot of stuff, and wants peace of mind when unexpected weather hits.

Topo Designs Mountain Cross Bag

  • Volume 17 L
  • Material 200D nylon upper, 1000D lower,
  • Waterproofing No
  • Weight 1 lb., 8 oz.
  • Dimensions 15" x 11.5" x 4"
  • Lots of organizational features
  • Padded laptop sleeve
  • Customizable straps
  • Small, slim profile
  • Not made to carry bulky items
  • Style might not be for everyone

Some messenger bags look more fun than others, and that is definitely the case with the colorful Topo Designs Mountain Cross Bag ($130). This company is known for its brightly colored products, and if you want a little more unconventional style in your everyday carry, this might just be what you're looking for.

The first thing we noticed is that this bag is definitely slimmer and smaller than other messenger bags we tested, with a 17 L total capacity. It's not made to be filled with bulky items, rather its incredible number of pockets enable you to stay organized but limit you to what kind of items you're carrying. This bag gently nudges you into having a plan for what you'll be putting inside of it rather than acting as a large catchall for whatever you throw in it as you are walking out the door like some of the other larger bags tested.

Luckily it can fit a 13-14" laptop and has a dedicated, padded compartment specifically for this purpose. Two water bottle holders on either side allow you to keep liquids out of the main compartment but can only comfortably accommodate smaller-sized bottles.

You can carry this bag as a briefcase, on your shoulder, or crossbody. Two straps are included so that you can choose how you'd like the bag to sit - the crossbody strap is shorter and has a buckle, causing the bag to sit higher on your back like with the Osprey Metron 18 , and the shoulder strap allows for a more casual carry, with the bag falling beside your hip like the Carhartt Messenger Bag .

All in all, the Topo Designs Mountain Cross Bag , with its many straps, clips, daisy chains, pockets, compartments, and colors, might be too much or just enough, depending on your style preference. We think it's a great bag for those who like to keep things super organized, and need a smaller everyday carry or travel bag.

Aer Commuter Brief 2

  • Material 840D nylon face, 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon side exteriors
  • Weight 2 lbs., 14.4 oz.
  • Dimensions 16" x 11.5" x 5.5"
  • Sleek and sophisticated look
  • Can carry briefcase style or as a shoulder bag with removable strap
  • Feels spacious for only 13-liters
  • Shoulder strap is not adjustable
  • Laptop sleeve can't fit a 16" laptop

The Aer Commuter Brief 2 ($145) is a sleek and polished messenger bag that brings a sophisticated look from your commute to the office. As its name suggests, this bag can be carried in a briefcase-style, or as a shoulder bag with the included easily attachable shoulder strap. A structured frame allows it to stand upright as you pack it full of the essentials for work or travel.

While some may go for the more quirky style of the Topo Designs Mountain Cross Bag , the Commuter Brief 2 has a more professional look with its matte finish, subtle logos, and a high-quality 840D nylon face and 1680D ballistic nylon side exterior materials.

A padded laptop sleeve toward the back of the bag can fit up to a 15" laptop. We wish it would allow for an inch more, as many laptops these days are commonly 16" and our testers feel like this is an unfortunate oversight on Aer's part. While this bag only has a 13-liter capacity, it feels much more spacious than that, with its large main compartment and a well-organized front pocket which packs in many different small pockets and pouches for keeping your small accessories in place and at hand.

An external back pocket allows you to keep important items like your wallet or passport close to your body while traveling, and a luggage-handle pass-through strap is a fantastic feature for keeping your travel luggage together and thus more streamlined.

The shoulder strap is not adjustable, so you can't customize the fit of the bag across your body. This feature, as well as the bag not having the capacity for a 16" laptop, are some things to keep in mind. But regardless, we do believe the Aer Commuter Brief 2 to be a great commuter bag for the sophisticated office worker.

KÜHL Eskape Messenger

  • Volume 14 L
  • Material Waterproof, TPU-laminated nylon
  • Dimensions 17.5" x 6.5" x 11.5"
  • High-quality
  • Great padding for laptop protection and back comfort
  • On the smaller side

The KÜHL Eskape Messenger ($249) stands out as a versatile and rugged option for those who might be more inclined to spend time outdoors. KÜHL is a company known for its outdoor gear, and the brand knows how to make clothing and accessories that can stand up to abuse - and the Eskape is no different.

Crafted from premium materials like weather-resistant, TPU-laminated nylon, the Eskape Messenger is engineered to endure the elements, whether navigating bustling city streets or venturing into the wilderness. Water-resistant zippers will bring you even more peace of mind. The shoulder strap is easily changeable to your left or right side and infinitely adjustable, so you can dial in your fit from casual to bike-ready. A stow-away hip belt is also there for when you need extra stability.

Our lead reviewer, Miya, was impressed with the laptop compartment which is actually made with a thick layer of padding for protection. Like most messenger bags in our review, it only fits up to a 15" laptop. But it actually lives up to its padding claim, with many other bags only having a slim amount of foam or felt as their form of protection. This also doubles as padding for your back and makes this bag very comfortable with no awkward stiff material to rub against.

KÜHL really tricked this bag out, and this is evident by its high price tag. But it has so many details that make it worth it, like its easy-to-use magnetic clasps, and high-visibility interior for better organization. It's like a premium version of the Osprey Metron 18 , though it lacks the rain cover that comes with the Osprey, is a bit smaller, and costs twice as much.

Overall, the KÜHL Eskape Messenger is a great choice for those outdoors-minded folk in search of a practical bag that can keep pace with their dynamic lifestyle. Whether it’s a day at the office, errands around town, or an outdoor excursion, this bag delivers both form and function.

Messenger Bag Comparison Chart

How we tested messenger bags.

Our GearJunkie testers are avid commuters, with decades of combined experience traveling via bike, train, bus, and plane. From the city streets of Los Angeles to the mountain town of Bishop, California, our testers have covered a lot of ground with these messenger bags and know what to look for in a good one.

From flying frequently around the country for work, to biking daily to coffee shops in her small town, our lead tester, Miya Tsudome, has had over two decades of hands-on experience with messenger bags, her go-to choice from college until now. She uses a messenger bag for her daily carry and also has a messenger bag for her photography equipment.

Miya tested this fleet of bags over the course of a month, making sure to carry each with a full load for a bike commute of four miles roundtrip, walked to many coffee shops and ran errands around town, and carefully evaluated their organization, weatherproofing capabilities, and quality of their design.

Though no one bag "has it all," there are many high-quality bags to choose from, and some that may fit your needs better than others. Are you looking for a classic messenger bag to take on a bike commute? Or a more casual shoulder bag for taking the train to the office? Are you looking for something sleek enough for the office or rugged enough to stand up to some weather?

It's worth considering how large your laptop is and making sure the bag you choose is compatible. Also, consider the general volume of the bag depending on how much you plan to carry. And if you are the type to pack a lot, maybe consider a backpack so you don't hurt your shoulders.

Buyer's Guide: How to Choose a Messenger Bag

Comfort is an important metric when evaluating a bag that you'll likely be carrying a lot - from home to office, through airports and train commutes, and beyond. The biggest indicator of a bag's comfort is in the construction of its strap and its carry style. If you’re after a pack that’s in it for more of the long haul, check out our Best Travel Backpacks guide.

Carry Style

Traditionally, a messenger bag is meant to be carried in a crossbody style. With roots in bike messenger travel, these bags have straps that will sling over one shoulder with the bag orientated diagonally across your back. This allows the bag to stay closer to your center of gravity while riding, and won't get in the way, much like a backpack.

The Timbuk2 Classic , Osprey Metron 18 , Mission Workshop Monty , and Mission Workshop Khyte are examples of this classic messenger bag carry style. Our testers think that this carry style is conducive to more comfort, as they often have larger, padded straps and the diagonal orientation high up on your torso provides better weight distribution and is less likely to cause sore shoulders.

The other carry style is a regular shoulder strap that causes a bag to fall at the hips. You can wear these bags crossbody of course, but the bag will stay in a horizontal position lower on your torso. Examples of this are the Timbuk2 Closer Laptop Briefcase , Peak Design Everyday Messenger , and Aer Commuter Brief 2 .

Some folks may not want the more specialized look of the traditional messenger bag and opt for this more casual shoulder strap style of carrying. When loaded up, however, these bags can get heavy and aren't as conducive to bike riding. They can also swing around on your back more and cause pressure points on your shoulders. The Topo Designs Mountain Cross Bag comes with two straps, so you can choose your preferred carry method.

Shoulder Straps

Shoulder straps are an obvious component of the comfort category, and can really make or break an experience with a messenger bag. Our testers appreciate wider, thicker straps with ample padding to provide cushion and help distribute weight more evenly.

The Mission Workshop Monty has the most comfortable shoulder straps we tested, with an optional sternum strap and a very satisfying, quick-adjust aluminum buckle on the front of the strap. In comparison, the Mission Workshop Khyte has a lesser quality strap, though you can switch it out with the Deluxe Messenger Strap for an additional $50. The Timbuk2 Classic is not overbuilt in any way and has a simple shoulder strap made with OrthoLite foam.

Organization and Size

When it comes to messenger bags, size matters. Too big, and you'll overload it with stuff and wish you'd bought a backpack instead. Too small and you'll be bummed when it won't fit much else other than your laptop. All of the bags in our review are between 10 and 24 liters. The utility of a messenger bag, besides just a statement of style, is for quick access to the interior by swinging it in front of the body. So it has to be somewhat small and nimble.

Organization is also paramount, as you don't want your small items to get lost inside a cavernous main compartment. And the best messenger bags will have some thoughtful organizational components to help you remember where everything is.

When selecting a messenger bag, especially if organization is a priority for you, here are some important features you might want to consider:

Multiple compartments : Look for a bag with multiple compartments of various sizes. This allows you to separate and organize your belongings efficiently, preventing items from getting lost or tangled.

Padded laptop compartment or sleeve : If you carry a laptop or tablet, a padded compartment is crucial to protect your device from bumps and scratches. You'll want to ensure that the compartment is appropriately sized to accommodate your device. Most messenger bags will fit smaller laptops of 11-14", but you'll have to make sure to double-check the dimensions if you have a bigger model. And if you're on the fence about buying a messenger bag to carry your tech around, check out our review of laptop backpacks that might make for a more comfortable carrying experience.

Interior Pockets and Sleeves: Interior pockets and sleeves are great for organizing smaller items like pens, keys, and chargers. They keep these essentials easily accessible while preventing them from cluttering up the main compartment because there's nothing worse than your keys getting tangled up in your charging cables.

Exterior Pockets: Exterior pockets are handy for items you need quick access to, such as your phone, wallet, or water bottle. Look for pockets with secure closures like zippers or magnetic snaps to keep your belongings safe, or stretch pockets to accommodate an umbrella or water bottle.

Key Clip or Key Ring: A key clip or ring inside the bag provides a designated spot to attach your keys, preventing them from getting lost in the bottom of the bag.

Electronics Protection

While what you carry around in your messenger bag will vary from person to person, it's more than likely that you'll be carrying around some electronics. Most messenger bags will come with some form of a laptop sleeve or dedicated compartment. It's wise to look for ones that have padding for additional protection, like in the Aer Commuter Brief 2 or the Topo Designs Mountain Cross Bag .

The Mission Workshop Khyte has a dedicated waterproof laptop sleeve which provides some serious protection in case you get caught in some inclement weather on your commute. And we love that the Osprey Metron 18 also comes with a rain cover to really bring you peace of mind while you're out and about.

The Mission Workshop Monty is the only bag in our lineup that does not come with a dedicated laptop compartment, which is unfortunate. Though it is an overall well-constructed and rugged bag that will keep your items protected under its heavy-duty flap, and will just require you to have your laptop in a sleeve already.

We also wish that the Peak Design Everyday Messenger came with some weather protection because it is meant to hold multiple lenses and cameras, and could thus definitely use a rain cover or a beefier lid system. Though, we also rounded up some of the best camera bags if you're looking to compare this specific kind of bag.

Design and Materials

When you’re looking for your next messenger bag, make sure to check out the materials and overall quality to ensure you’re getting something that’ll last. Nylon and polyester are lightweight and hold up well against the elements. All of the bags in our review are made of some sort of nylon. Other classic messenger bags can be made with canvas or leather, and portray a different style if that's something you're looking for.

The Timbuk2 Classic , Closer , Peak Design Everyday Messenger , Topo Designs Mountain Cross Bag , and KÜHL Eskape Messenger are all made with recycled materials as a bonus. It's always good to look for material with a DWR finish, which stands for durable water repellant and is a coating that makes the fabric more water resistant.

You can also pay attention to the denier of the fabric, which is a unit of measurement that indicates the thickness of the fabric's individual threads and, thus, its overall durability. The Mission Workshop Monty has the highest denier fabric in our review, made with 1000-denier Cordura. Some other bags, like the Peak Design Everyday Messenger and the Osprey Metron 18 , are made with 400-500 denier fabric which is still a testament to their quality and is plenty durable enough for daily use.

Once you’ve got the material down, take a look at the stitching and hardware. You want stitches that can handle your load without popping, especially around stress points like the straps. The KÜHL Eskape Messenger is reinforced in high-abrasion areas, and the Aer Commuter Brief 2 has 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon side exteriors.

And those buckles, zippers, and clasps? They should be smooth operators that give you easy access while keeping your stuff secure.

Lastly, it's always good to give the bag a once-over for craftsmanship. You want clean seams, tight stitching, and all the pieces lining up just right. Loose threads or wonky seams might be a sign of shoddy construction that’ll leave you hanging down the road.

Weather-Proofing

Whether you’re dodging raindrops on your daily commute or trekking through unpredictable weather, you want a bag that can keep your gear dry. Look for materials like nylon, polyester, or treated canvas that offer water-resistant or waterproof properties like the aforementioned DWR found on the  Osprey Metron 18 and Peak Design Everyday Messenger .

Sealed seams and water-resistant zippers are also must-haves to keep moisture from sneaking in through the cracks, as found on the burly KÜHL Eskape Messenger . And if you really want to go the extra mile, some bags like the Osprey Metron 18 come with rain covers or built-in waterproof linings for added protection when the skies open up.

When you’re shopping for a messenger bag that can stand up to the elements and go the distance, keeping an eye out for weatherproofing features and durable construction ensures you’re investing in a bag that’s ready for whatever adventure comes your way.

Messenger bags come in a wide range of prices, catering to different budgets and preferences. At the lower end of the spectrum, you can find affordable options starting from around $20 to $50. Though not covered in this review, you can find bags in this price range, and these budget-friendly bags often feature basic designs and materials like nylon or polyester, with fewer organizational features and less durable construction.

While they may lack some of the bells and whistles of higher-priced options, they can still serve as functional carryalls for everyday use, making them a solid choice for those on a tight budget or looking for a simple solution.

In the mid-range, messenger bags typically range from $50 to $150, which make up the bulk of the bags in our review. These bags strike a balance between affordability and quality, offering a wider variety of materials, styles, and features to choose from. You’ll find options made from durable fabrics likely with water-resistant properties, with more organizational compartments, padded laptop sleeves, and reinforced stitching for added durability.

Although they may require a bit more upfront investment, these mid-range bags often provide better value in terms of longevity and functionality, making them a popular choice for those seeking a reliable everyday carry, a great bike commuter companion, or a sleek briefcase for the office.

At the higher end of the price spectrum, messenger bags can range from $150 to $400 or more. These premium bags can be crafted from high-quality materials like 1000-denier nylon fabric, or, though not covered in this review, full-grain leather or waxed canvas. These bags will have meticulous attention to detail and superior craftsmanship.

The Mission Workshop Khyte , at $390 is the most expensive bag in our review, with its two-layer waterproof construction and premium buckles and zippers. While the initial cost may be steep, these top-tier messenger bags offer unparalleled durability, style, and functionality, making them a worthwhile investment for those who demand the best.

Ultimately, the price you pay for a messenger bag depends on your budget, needs, and personal preferences. While budget-friendly options can provide a cost-effective solution for basic carrying needs, investing in a higher-priced bag can offer better quality, durability, and features that enhance your everyday carry experience. Whether you’re looking for a simple and affordable option or a premium bag that combines style and functionality, there’s a messenger bag out there for you.

It's worth emphasizing that messenger bags can distribute weight unevenly, as they are typically worn over one shoulder, which can lead to strain and discomfort, especially if you’re carrying heavy loads for extended periods. The asymmetric distribution of weight may also cause postural issues over time, such as uneven muscle development or strain on one side of the body.

Firstly you want to make sure you know what kind of strap is on the bag you have chosen. If it's a classic messenger style, you'll wear the bag higher up on your back and will likely want a close-to-body fit, pulling the shoulder strap tight across your chest. If it comes with a regular shoulder strap, which causes the bag to hang at your hip, you can choose to wear it crossbody or on one shoulder and adjust the strap to your height and comfort level.

Try to distribute the bag’s weight evenly across your body by adjusting the strap length and positioning the bag securely against your side. Avoid overloading the bag with heavy items, as this can cause strain on your shoulder and back over time.

Some messenger bags come with a stabilizing strap or waist belt that helps distribute weight more evenly and prevents the bag from shifting while you move. If your bag has one, use it to enhance comfort and stability.

Throughout the day, periodically adjust the strap length and position of the bag to ensure continued comfort and support. Listen to your body and make adjustments as needed to prevent discomfort or strain.

While messenger bags offer certain advantages, they may not necessarily be superior to backpacks in all situations, especially if you are carrying heavier loads. But there are a few reasons why people might prefer messenger bags over their two-strap cousins.

Accessibility: Messenger bags typically feature a flap or quick-release buckle design that allows for easy access to the bag’s contents without needing to remove it entirely. This can be convenient for quickly retrieving items like laptops, notebooks, or documents, especially in a work or commuting environment.

Style: Messenger bags often have a sleek and professional appearance that appeals to individuals who prefer a more urban or sophisticated look. They can be suitable for work, school, or casual outings, adding a touch of style to your look.

Mobility: Messenger bags are worn across the body, which can offer greater mobility and freedom of movement compared to backpacks, particularly in crowded or tight spaces. The single shoulder strap allows for quick and easy adjustment, making it convenient for activities like biking or navigating public transportation.

While messenger bags offer these advantages, it’s important to consider the potential drawbacks as well, such as uneven weight distribution, limited storage capacity, and the potential for shoulder or back strain with heavy loads. Ultimately, the best choice between messenger bags and backpacks depends on individual preferences, needs, and comfort preferences.

Historically, satchels have a long history dating back centuries, originally used by messengers, postal workers, and travelers to carry letters, documents, and other items. Over time, satchels evolved into fashionable accessories associated with academia and business attire. In contrast, the modern messenger bag gained popularity in the 1980s and 1990s as a practical and stylish accessory for urban commuters and students, inspired by the bags used by bike messengers and couriers in urban environments.

Overall, while both satchels and messenger bags serve similar purposes as shoulder bags for carrying personal items, they cater to different preferences and needs, offering distinct styles, functionalities, and historical backgrounds.

When choosing the right size for a messenger bag, which can range from anywhere between 10 and 24 liters in the case of our review, there are several factors you should think about before pulling the trigger.

You'll want to double-check the size of your laptop, as many messenger bags have different carrying capacities for laptops.

Then think about the volume of items you typically carry. Look for a bag with enough compartments and pockets to keep your belongings organized, including essentials like notebooks, water bottles, keys, and wallet.

Lastly, consider how you'll most likely be using the bag. For work or commuting, opt for a size that can accommodate documents and other work-related items. If you plan to use it for travel or outdoor activities, you may need a larger bag to carry extra clothing, snacks, a camera, or other gear.

Dimensions: Height: 6.5 inches; width: 3.5 inches; length: 10.5 inches

Material: Leather

Customer review: “This is a gorgeous bag, and the leather is so dreamy *but* you will be forced to pick and choose what you want to carry as the interior is quite small. I’m able to fit my iPhone pro, small wallet, lip balm and car key…and that’s pretty much it. But the look is worth it!”

While we love cameras, camera bags are usually ugly, point blank. You’re not paparazzi, and although you are a traveler, you wouldn’t want anyone to think of you as a tourist , right? This fashionable find from Isabel Marant is the solution.

Dimensions: Height: 5.25 inches; width: 3 inches; length: 7.25 inches

Material: Leather, silver, textile

Colors: Black

If style is your top priority, here’s an option that will match with quite literally anything you wear. The concession is that you might not be able to squeeze that telescopic camera lens inside it, but there’s more than enough room for airplane snacks.

Material: Calfskin

Colors: Black, Desert, Avorio, Plum

Customer review: “What a beautiful and versatile bag, both in terms of style and colour. It's surprisingly roomy for the size. The leather is absolutely beautiful and buttery soft. Super happy with my purchase!”

It wouldn’t be a complete crossbody roundup without some form of nylon Prada. Similar to the ever-practical Re-Edition 2005 Re-Nylon Bag , this quilted flap-over bag comes complete with a detachable mini zipper pouch.

Dimensions: Height: 17 centimeters; width: 24 centimeters; length: 8 centimeters

It’s not huge but it could also fit small souvenirs picked up throughout the day such as magnets, small jewelry items, candy, etc. Highly recommend!”

Here at ELLE, we love MZ Wallace . This perfectly sized Sutton is just the latest obsession. We scrolled through pages and pages of five-star customer reviews in search of any “cons” to no avail.

The strap is nice and wide and comfortable and the bag is big enough for me to even carry my Owala in it! If you’re on the fence, come on over. This bag rules!”

Béis knows travel. This sling backpack is ideal for busy walkabout days and can play counterpart to any number of other Béis luggage pieces. If you act fast, you can stock up and save big on multiple items during the brand’s early Black Friday sale .

Best Shoulder Bag Travel Case for Camera

To help you find the best travel cases for cameras to protect your gear, the GH Institute experts turned to real photographers, videographers and content creators for their go-to picks when taking their equipment on the road (or through busy airports). The picks below include travel backpacks with padding and dividers made to secure your camera despite bumpy roads and turbulence, as well as carry-on camera cases, purses and bags.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute , our team of experts has been testing travel and tech essentials for decades, from must-have travel gear to travel backpacks , portable tablets , smartphones and more. When selecting the best travel cases for cameras, we reviewed each pick for factors like design, materials, weight and extra features like easy access points and extra pockets. Below you'll find the best travel cases for cameras in 2024.

Designed for trips four days or longer, this carry-on size 45-liter backpack is all you need on your next adventure. Not only is it roomy enough to store your camera equipment, but it has enough space for other essentials like clothing, tablets and much more thanks to tons of access points, pockets and straps.

"I carry a lot of differently sized cameras and films on any given trip,” said one photographer. “The inserts they sell for it are great for moving a variety of cameras while keeping them safe and it’s quick to open once you get to a location and start shooting .” Just keep in mind that accessories like the camera packing cube are sold separately, making it a bit of a splurge.

Our pros love that the backpack comes with a luggage pass-through so you can stack it on a carry-on suitcase, or you can store the padded shoulder and waist straps away if you plan on checking. For heavier loads, it even features an expansion zip so you can squeeze a bit more into your bag (45-liter capacity) or you can compress it down to 30 liters when needed. But what we really love most is that the backpack's nylon material is weatherproof, according to the brand, and the bottom of the bag contains a waterproof liner so you don't have to fret too much about where you set it down or what weather comes your way.

Need something to store your new camera and need it quickly? Our pros like this super affordable backpack that you can get on Amazon for under $50 . It features nearly 2,000 five-star reviews, but what makes it so great are its six removable dividers, a tripod strap (if needed) and a 13-inch laptop sleeve so you can carry everything in one spot. Plus, there are mesh pockets on the sides for quick access to umbrellas or water bottles, as well as zippered pockets for accessories.

A waterproof rain cover also comes included should you get stuck in a downpour. "It's large enough for a camera body and several lenses and other stuff!" said one online reviewer. "The sturdy sides make it a good choice to protect my equipment."

You’d never guess that this inconspicuous backpack is actually a travel case for cameras. Compact, lightweight and available in a variety of colors, our pros love that it comes with five dividers so you can configure it to your camera equipment. In addition to the zip-top closure, we also appreciate that a laptop pocket is included along with a quick access pocket so you can quickly snap a shot when needed — and that’s not to mention the passport pocket and hidden pocket.

For those who plan on traveling extensively with it, rest assured that it’s machine washable and even comes with a lifetime warranty. “I like that it has padded compartments that I can customize for my camera stuff but also looks like a normal backpack,” said one photographer. “It just looks good. It’s great when traveling internationally so I don’t draw attention to myself by looking like I have camera gear on me .” For those who need a bit more space, consider sizing up and option for the large model that’s 22 liters.

Lo & Sons Claremont

Travel cases for cameras don’t have to be bulky, unattractive or blatantly obvious. Our experts absolutely love this stylish camera purse made from full grain leather that’s available in four shades. It’s designed to protect a DSLR camera as well as a small extra lens among other essentials like your wallet. (For more compatibility information, you can refer to the brand’s size and fit guide via the product page .)

While we haven’t yet tested this exact model, our fiber scientists like the brand’s oversized weekender bag and expect no less from this pick. We especially love that it’s built with two little pockets for SD cards and a handy zippered pocket to squeeze in a passport. Plus, the straps are adjustable so you can find the best length for your height.

Bring this rugged backpack with you on all your outdoor adventures. Not only do our travel experts love its attractive design that comes in three shades, but we appreciate that it’s made from a water-resistant canvas material and features padding and insulation to keep your gear safe . You can store other essentials like wallets, cash and a phone in its many pockets, as well as a 15-inch laptop. We especially love the side pocket that opens up so you can quickly access your camera without having to take the entire backpack off.

One of our photographers, Philip Friedman , uses this carry-on camera bag for whenever he needs to travel with a lot of camera equipment. Unlike other backpacks or bags featured on this list, the Roadie Roller can fit two mirrorless or DSLR cameras and up to five to six lenses as well as a laptop . For those who need more space, you can also opt for the Roller 21, 24 or other sizes.

According to the brand, this camera case complies with most international and U.S. domestic carry-on regulations, meaning that you should be able to bring it onboard with you but always consult with your airline first. GH luggage experts appreciate the bag’s sleek look and like that a removable camera module is included so you can feel good about packing up your gear, though the bag itself is on the heavier side.

Another Hearst staff favorite, we love this shoulder bag for those who don't like wearing backpacks or may already have one. Because of its design, it should be super easy to access your camera as well as any extra lenses (according to the brand, the bag can fit from three to five extra lenses and up to two DSLR cameras). Though it’s not made for storing many other bulky travel essentials like a laptop, we appreciate that the bag features several pockets, storage compartments and a weather cover plus padding to protect from the elements.

Also notable is that interior dividers are customizable so you can organize your gear however suits you best. "As everyone knows, inevitably the amount of gear we carry expands to immediately fill all available space," one online reviewer shares. "This bag met my goals nicely and it is a very nicely made bag. I love the rain cover feature and have already put it to work when we got caught out in a heavy downpour."

How we chose the best travel cases for cameras

line break

When narrowing down the best travel cases for cameras, the GH Institute product analysts and experts extensively research the most popular picks on the market. We then reached out to photographers, videographers and content creators to learn more about the travel camera cases they use and love and reviewed specs for at least 10 models. To make our final selections, we assessed each pick for factors such as design, materials, weight and extra features like easy access points, extra pockets and more.

What to look for when shopping for a travel case for cameras

line break

Below you'll find tips from real photographers on what to look for when shopping for a travel camera case:

✔️ Material: As you shop for a camera case, make sure that you choose one made from sturdy, durable materials that will protect your equipment. If possible, our pros suggest opting for a water-resistant or waterproof case. "I like something waterproof or water-resistant because you never know what scenario you will be waking into while traveling," says Good Housekeeping's lead photographer, Mike Garten . "No one wanted expensive camera gear to become saturated with rain or spray from a pretty waterfall."

✔️ Type: You'll want to decide whether you prefer a backpack, shoulder bag or a rolling carry-on as your travel camera case. While backpacks tend to be more comfortable, a shoulder bag is a bit easier to access. Carry-ons are a great choice for anyone who needs to transport a lot of equipment at once. ✔️ Design: Pay careful attention to your camera case's design both inside and out. Not only do you want to be satisfied with how it looks on the outside, but the interior organizational features should be customizable and compatible with the gear you'll carry. Look for removable dividers so you can shift things around as necessary. ✔️Access points: Look for several access points if you want to be able to access your camera quickly. "A side access portal or panel is crucial so that you can swing the bag off one shoulder and access the camera quickly to get the shot," says Garten. ✔️ Extra features: Look for extra features that come with your camera case, like zippered or mesh pockets so you can squeeze other essentials in your bag like a water bottle or wallet. Tripod straps are handy as well if you plan on bringing one, and a rain cover can save the day should you get caught in bad weather. "A laptop pocket is great so that you have everything in one," suggests Garten. "If you’re out taking lots of pictures you will likely need to download images onto a computer to make space for more!"
