Nagsasa, Anawangin, and Talisayen all come from one fabric, sprinkled by the same volcanic ash. This humble cove in Zambales is the lesser-known stepsister of Nagsasa and Anawangin Cove, and often gets overlooked.

What sets Talisayen apart from its stepsisters is its peaceful, quiet, and more laidback atmosphere. This is one of the reasons why it appeals to a different type of travelers, often to those who are more into making their own trail and adventures.

Other than swimming and sunbathing, this cove serves as an excellent spot for stargazing. While there, challenge your friends to spot the brightest stars and constellations. It’s a fun way to spend the night!

Go on a side trip and experience Zambales’ historical side with the beloved former Philippine President, Ramon Magsaysay’s ancestral house, in the town of Castillejos. The house was restored and converted into a museum back in 1990.

The National Historical Institute reconstructed and renovated it in 1999 after it was severely destroyed by the Mt. Pinatubo eruption in 1991.

The modest yet charming two-level structure contains memorabilia and some personal remembrance about the former president, such as pictures and medals.

Some of Ramon Magsaysay’s sharp Barong Tagalogs are displayed in the historical site. You can also find his vintage Presidential car, the Willy Jeep, in the museum.

You should pay a quick trip here to find more about why Ramon Magsaysay was well admired and respected by the people.

Outdoor Activities in Zambales

If you’re looking for an adventure-packed vacation, Zambales offers plenty of outdoor activities. Here are some of the top activities you can enjoy during your visit:

Beach Resorts in Zambales Philippines

Beach hop and hike a trail… at the same time!

Having the perfect diving spots isn’t the only thing that Zambales is proud of. Having beautiful seas also means having beautiful beaches. Potipot Island and Anawangin Cove is just some of the most visited beaches in Zambales. The white-sand Potipot Island and its peaceful open skies and driftwood atmosphere make it a famous island getaway. Meanwhile, Anawangin Cove’s hills and cream-sand beaches are perfect for relaxation. Generally, people visit Zambales’s beaches because most allow beachside camping and cooking.

If that’s not enough, you’ll be surprised that some of Zambales’ beaches aren’t just seaside, tanning, swimming paradises. Some beaches, like Capones Island, have a rocky trail visited more often than its small pocket of a cream-sand beach. This is because at the end of the trail, at the highest peak of the small island, is an abandoned Spanish Lighthouse that looks like it’s taken from a vintage postcard. If you don’t fancy taking pictures of antique buildings, you’ll definitely appreciate the view of the open skies and deep blue waters.

Mount Pinatubo Crater Lake by shotbymikafrbs via Unsplash

Hike to Mt. Pinatubo, and see nature’s wrath and love

Zambales has several mountains that are perfect for hiking enthusiasts. Mount Pinatubo is a popular choice, with its breathtaking views of the crater lake. Another great option is Mount Tapulao, known for its scenic trails and lush forests. If you’re up for a challenge, you can also try hiking up the rugged terrain of Mount Balingkilat.

Considered one of the most destructive natural calamities in Philippine history, the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991 has taken kilometers of houses, farmlands, and even lives. Today, Mt. Pinatubo in Botolan, Zambales, has become a hiking destination.

Plenty of tour packages are offered, but you may also organize your own tour. The roads are suitable for heavy-duty four-wheeled trekking vehicles so hiking time can be reduced. The trail that needs to be trekked on foot is just half an hour’s hike at most.

The aftermath of the 1991 eruption is still visible in some parts of the trail, such as the gloomy, grey-colored lahar deposits you’ll most likely encounter in your trek. However, above the trail is the Crater Lake, an oddly beautiful lake that was formed after the volcano’s eruption. The Crater Lake, sometimes called Mt. Pinatubo Lake, stands proudly in the center of the grey environment, an oasis in the grey desert. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the lake at the end of your tiring trek and witnessing nature’s ability to destroy and create.

(Tip: For beach or island hopping adventures, hiking, and seaside relaxing, visit Zambales during the dry season, which generally occurs from October to June. Avoid the wet season as hiking may get difficult or impossible.)

The Glamp Zambales

Beach Camping

Camping on the beach is a must-try activity in Zambales. Anawangin Cove, Nagsasa Cove, and Silanguin Cove are some of the most popular destinations for beach camping. You can rent a tent or bring your own and spend a night under the stars while listening to waves crashing on the shore.

Surfing in Liwliwa, San Felipe Zambales photo by hectorhannibal via Flickr

Zambales is also a surfer’s paradise, with several beaches offering great waves for surfing. San Narciso and San Antonio are two of the best spots for surfing in Zambales. If you’re a beginner, you can take lessons from local instructors who will teach you the basics of surfing.

Subic Bay Yacht Club photo via FB Page

Plunge underwater to see shipwrecks or get on a yacht

Zambales, a province directly facing the sea, is blessed with plentiful dive spots. Subic Bay, for one, is one of the most known diving spots in the province for its picturesque views of the open sea and the most unique diving sites.

Subic is a first-class municipality with an active military history during the American Period in the country. It was a functional military base even after the end of the Second World War. The accumulation of shipwrecks in Subic Bay has now turned into hot diving spots and a favorite hangout place for various schools of fish! There are plenty of diving resorts along Subic Bay. Arizona Dive Shop in Olongapo City is one of the most well-known. SCUBA Tech Philippines, in the same city, also offers diving lessons for beginners.

Subic Bay is also known for hosting national regattas. Subic Sailing, the “home” of the Saturday Afternoon Gentlemen Sailors (SAGS), holds races annually and hosts sailing lessons. Watch others set sail or learn to do it on your own.

Get away from the crowds and closer to nature.

If you plan to have a quieter vacation in Zambales, there are some tranquil destinations that you can go to.

Anghalo Falls in San Felipe is a less visited place and is the ultimate pot of gold for trekkers. The trail to Anghalo Falls starts out with mostly flat grassland before turning rockier and steeper. Nevertheless, the 15 to 20-minute trek to this beautiful water world shouldn’t hinder anyone who wants to chill out in Anghalo Falls’ cool water.

If you plan to be more hands-on with the wild, Wildlife In Need (WIN) in Subic Bay can be another destination. WIN is a California-based non-profit organization that expanded in the Philippines. The staff would be more than happy to accommodate guests who want to see rescued monkeys or birds or learn a thing or two about Philippine biodiversity.

Whether you’re a nature lover, an adventure seeker, or just looking for a fun-filled vacation, Zambales has something for everyone. From hiking to beach camping to surfing, there are plenty of outdoor activities to keep you busy during your stay.

Cultural Attractions in Zambales

Zambales is not only known for its beautiful beaches and coves but also for its rich cultural heritage. Here are some cultural attractions that you should visit during your trip to Zambales.

The church is also a pilgrimage site for devotees of Our Lady of Poon Bato, who is believed to have appeared in the area.

Sentro Turismo Zambaleno Museum photo via FB page

Sentro Turismo Zambaleño Museum

If you want to learn more about the history and culture of Zambales, then you should visit the Zambales Museum. The museum is located in Iba, the capital of Zambales, and showcases the province’s rich cultural heritage. The museum’s collection includes artifacts, photographs, and documents that date back to the pre-colonial era. Some of the museum’s highlights include a replica of a traditional Aeta house, antique furniture, and old photographs of Zambales. The museum is open from Monday to Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. These cultural attractions offer a glimpse into Zambales’s rich history and culture. Whether you’re a history buff or just interested in learning more about the province, these attractions are definitely worth a visit.

A Platter of fresh Mangoes

Buy a kilo of mangoes after partying.

Did you know that Zambales’s mangoes were once listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as one of the sweetest mangoes in the world in 1995? And in 2013, the country’s Department of Agriculture declared Zambales’s mangoes as the sweetest of its kind in the country?

Mangoes are one of Zambales’s primary products. That is why in 1999, the locals decided to spearhead the Dinamulag Festival or the Zambales Mango Festival, to celebrate the province’s yellowest and sweetest produce. The festival is usually held during the first week of April. The schedule varies.

Zambales has a lot more to offer when it comes to local cuisine. Don’t be afraid to try something new and experience the unique flavors that Zambales has to offer.

top 10 tourist attractions in zambales

When commuting, many provincial buses operate every day from Manila to Olongapo. You can check out Victory Liner for online booking and schedule.

When traveling around Zambales, the mode of transportations is jeepney and tricycle for shorter distances. Meanwhile, a bus is your option for longer trips.

Below is a Zambales tourist spot list to check out for your next summer getaway

Table of Contents

1. Anawangin Cove

Anawangin cove is among the top Zambales tourist spot to visit on sunny days

Spend a day or arrange an overnight stay at Anawangin Cove when you want to take a break from the bustling metropolis.

The natural cove here in San Antonio’s town is a go-to place for beginner campers and the pros alike.

Anawangin Cove is known for its crescent-like coast, covered by powdery ash-white sand. Back in 1991, Mount Pinatubo’s eruption dampened a considerable amount of ash to the former barren coastline of Zambales.

Best to visit with friends or colleagues, you can enjoy a peaceful stay away from the city lights and noises, even just for the day.

You can rent some cottages or camps at designated camping areas. During the day, you can hop on to boat rentals or jet skis. When the sun sets, you can have your bonfire session while enjoying some drinks and laughter.

Before visiting this Zambales tourist spot, note that there are no proper accommodations in the area and no electricity. So make sure to bring with you all your essentials, and prepped meals are a lifesaver.

2. Capones Island

Capones Island with towering rocks. A must-vist Zambales tourist spot.

If you fancy a quick island tour, then visit Capones Island . A 30-minute boat ride from Anawangin Cove will do the job.

This small island packs a dramatic landscape of enormous rock formations, surrounded by white sands and a vast blue sea.

To enjoy your day tour at Capone Island, you can try hiking on the way to the Spanish lighthouse. Though entry isn’t allowed anymore, you can still enjoy and marvel at the unwavering seascape view.

Aside from playing and wandering at its coast, you can do some snorkeling or diving activities as well.

Capones Island is indeed an instagrammable place and a haven for the beach bum, thanks to its fascinating charm.

This Zambales tourist spot is ideal for a day tour visit for safety concerns because of its remote location.

3. Potipot Island

Potipot Island is a perfect getaway with its powdery white beach. Another top Zambales tourist spot

Another must-visit island destination in Zambales is Potipot Island in the town of Candelaria . At its port, you can ride a boat for around 15 minutes.

Similar to Capones Island, Potipot Island boasts of fine white sands without those enormous rocky hills. Instead, towering trees flock to its center, providing shades to its locals and visitors.

At Potipot Island, overnight stays are allowed. To save on your expenses, you can bring your camping tents. However, if you prefer to travel with light baggage, rooms and tents are available as well. More so, you can even get pre-packed meals or cook at the designated kitchen.

Tourists can roam around the island along the shore. For added fun, you can also do that by renting a kayak at an affordable rate.

The best thing about this Zambales tourist spot is its calm waters, so you will surely love swimming during the day. You won’t miss witnessing the golden sunsets too.

At night, the sheer silence envelopes the island so that you can detox from the bustling city life. One of the perks of staying at Potipot Island is also waking up from the sounds of the inviting waves.

Just like those remote islands, electricity is also scarce. Though they have some generators, bringing your extra power banks with you lets you capture every moment in Potipot Island.

4. Nagsasa Cove

Another cove to visit and include to your Zambales tourist spot list

Visiting Nagsasa Cove in the southern part of San Antonio has a similar setting to the Anawangin Cove. Ash-like sands and Agoho trees surround the coastline too.

What sets Nagsasa from its famous Zambales tourist spot counterpart, Anawangin, is its more laidback. Here, additional breathable spaces keep you away from the crowd.

Away from mobile signals and electricity, you will surely keep yourself off the grid from the city’s hustle and bustle.

Rent some boat and do beach hopping. You can hike the nearby mountains as well. After all, reaching its viewpoint rewards you for its striking panoramic scenery.

There is also a shallow inlet to stroll to when you walk by its southern end. Just like Anawangin, it is best to bring camping materials if you can.

5. Inflatable Island Subic

Inflatable Island packs fun adventure and eye-candy facilities to choose from. One of the rising Zambales tourist spot in terms of resort facilities.

Since its launching in 2017, the Inflatable Island has gained massive popularity, making it one of the top Zambales tourist spots.

Get yourselves ready to immerse in a fun-filled day at the l argest floating theme park in the country. With a size of 10 basketball court combined, you’ll never get a dull moment once you arrive and starts gliding thru the slides.

What Inflatable Island sets apart from the beach resorts in Zambales is its unique set up of gigantic inflatables in the open sea.

The largest of its kind is the Unicornzilla, where you can slide down on its colorful tail. Some sections also include the Unicorn Island, The Vortex, and the Rainbow Island.

Navigating around the inflatables can be a challenge with the added sun’s heat. So make sure to be there the earliest possible or during the late afternoon.

When you’re feeling weary, you can rest on the pastel lounge while enjoying some refreshments and snacks, all available at its food stalls.

This Zambales tourist spot is a real gem for beach lovers who loves to take plenty of photographs while enjoying the summer vibe.

6. Botolan Wildlife Farm

Take a break from your beach tours and visit Botolan Wildlife Farm in Botolan, Zambales.

This privately-run conservation and wildlife farm shares its passion and love for animals by opening to the public in 2000. Set up on more than five hectares of land, different plants and animals can be observed here.

Don’t miss seeing its famous Siberian tiger named Ramses. Among others to look out for are the Philippine brown deer, ostrich, birds of prey, wild boar, and many more.

History of Zambales

The vibrant origin and history of Zambales unfurl like a tapestry adorned with hues of culture, tenacity, and discovery. Tucked within the Philippines, Zambales’ story is a narrative that stretches back through time, resonating with the echoes of indigenous brilliance and enduring spirit. Long before the tides of change, Zambales resonated with the rhythms of the Sambal people. A seafaring community of Austronesian origin, they painted the province with their mastery of maritime trade and a harmonious coexistence with the land and sea.

The 16th-century arrival of Spanish explorers added new shades to Zambales’ canvas. Enfolded in Spanish colonial embrace, churches and settlements graced its terrain, as European architecture and Christianity found a foothold. The province’s strategic coastal location infused vitality into the Spanish galleon trade, an intercontinental symphony of exchange between the Philippines and far-off Mexico. Yet, Zambales’ history danced to the beats of resistance. Amidst the fervor of the Philippine-American War, the province stood as a sanctuary for freedom fighters. General Antonio Luna’s presence etched courage into its landscapes, embodying the province’s role as a sanctuary of valor.

If you’re thirsty for some beach experience, Anawangin Cove is just hours away from the busy city of Manila. It has everything you need for an ultimate sea experience. Capones Island

If you are picky and Anawangin Cove didn’t satisfy your beach cravings, Capones Island is one of the top tourist spots in Zambales ready to amaze you. Unlike Anawangin Cove, the sand in this island is whiter and firmer but can get rocky most of the time. 7 Tourist Spots for Your ZAMBALES ITINERARY

top 10 tourist attractions in zambales

Last updated: 26 April 2024

Zambales is a popular getaway destination because of its proximity and accessibility from Metro Manila and nearby cities. It provides visitors with beautiful beaches, stunning views of coves, outdoor experiences, and affordable destinations. There are many buses that travel from stations in Manila to different parts of the province – the fare will vary depending on the terminal where you will depart and the terminal where you choose to be dropped off.

If you’re planning to visit the province, here are some of the things to do and places of interest to include in your itinerary.

WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

See the Stunning Crater Lake of Mt. Pinatubo

View this post on Instagram A post shared by G🦄 (@biehappygie) on Feb 13, 2019 at 1:29am PST

The devastation caused by Pinatubo’s eruption more than a decade ago has left permanent scars on the provinces near it. Fast forward to today, the slumbering volcano is now a popular tourist destination. Pictures of its stunning crater lake have attracted thousands of tourists. Your trip begins with a 4×4 ride through rugged and bumpy dirt roads, streams and lahar-carved surroundings.

After the ride, you’ll have to trek for a couple of hours through mostly flat surfaces before you reach the lake. The spectacular views and the azure-tinged waters will immediately revitalize your tired body and aching muscles. You can have a picnic here with the crater as your backdrop before returning to the jump-off point. There are several day tours from Manila, but you can manage to DIY. However, if you choose go on your own, start early.

Enjoy Island-hopping

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Philippine Beaches & Beyond (@philippinebeachlist)

One of the reasons Zambales is popular is because of island-hopping. You can visit a handful of beautiful islands with stunning bird’s eye views of the coves. The usual destinations include Capones Island , Nagsasa Cove , and Anawangin Cove . These spots may not have the powdery, white shores of beaches you’ll find in Palawan, but they are beautiful in their own way.

Anawangin and Nagsasa both have viewpoints where you can go up to see the iconic views of their respective coves. Do the usual beach activities in any of the three islands such as swimming, sunbathing and camping. Boat rates vary depending on destinations you want to be included in the itinerary.

For a recent island-hopping daytrip, we were charged P3500 for two people. You can also pitch tents for a fee in both Anawangin and Nagsasa.

Experience the Great Outdoors

View this post on Instagram A post shared by DinoRod (@dnotrex) on Nov 2, 2017 at 7:59pm PDT

If you’re outdoorsy in search of adventure, take your bike with you to Subic. The city can serve as your jump-off point to the province’s ascending and descending hills, flat plains, and serpentine roads. Follow Mt. Samat’s and Pastolan’s trails to break out a sweat and enjoy the views along the way.

For those who don’t want to do much during their visit, Potipot Island is the place to be. It only takes 15 minutes by boat from Candelaria, Zambales to reach this small but beautiful islet. You can easily explore Potipot because of its size. Wade in the waters, work on your tan, throw a Frisbee for a couple of rounds or so, take photos and just enjoy your stay. To get here, board a bus bound for Sta. Cruz, Zambales from Metro Manila. Tell the conductor you’ll alight at the barangay hall of Uacon. Then hire a tricycle to take you to the beach where the boats that can take you to the island are docked.

The Camara house is one of a kind built from the strongest local hardwoods, such as molave, yakal and narra. Camara himself together with Ginzaburo Hanaki designed the house with materials personally chosen by the former in 1912. Design was based on the need for ventilation, steep roof made of nipa for coolness. Floor-to-ceiling windows added more ventilation to the house. The main staircase and jambs are made of single, unjoined molave hardwood. During the war, it was used as headquarters by the Japanese. Gen. Yamashita visited the house during the war years. In its yard, the first Caimito, Java Mango, and Mangosteen trees in Zambales were planted.

  • Capones Island Lighthouse

San Antonio, Zambales

The Faro (Lighthouse) de Punta Capones on the Island of Grand Capon is a significant lighthouse of the first order. Its light guides ships entering and leaving the port of Manila and Subic Bay. The lighthouse also warns navigators of the rocky shores surrounding the Island of Capones. As a warning beacon, it serves together with the lights situated in the islets of Los Frailes, and Los Jabones as a series of warnings due to the dangers of the surrounding seas as well as the islands close proximity to shore, thereby making the seas very treacherous to unseasoned navigators. As a navigation guide, this lighthouse serves the main artery for ships heading towards China, which therefore makes it a very busy and important shipping route.

Responding to the need for better navigation guides throughout the Philippines, the Spanish colonial government initiated a substantial building program of lighthouses and light stations throughout the Philippine archipelago. One of the initial projects to be approved in this significant undertaking was the lighthouse on the Island of Grand Capon or Faro de Punta Capones.

  • Fort Paynauen

This historic fortress whose moss-covered walls still stand on the bank of Bancal River in Barrio Pader in Botolan was once the most formidable Spanish garrison in Central Luzon during the first century of the Spanish regime in the Philippines. Also known as Playa Honda, the fort was constructed on the advice of Spanish Admiral Pedro Duran de Monforte to Governor General Diego de Salcedo whose administration of the islands from 1663 to 1668 had to face the serious problem of the continuous uprising of the inhabitants of the province, also known as the province of Playa Honda. Paynauen is the original name of Iba. In 1617, off the coast of Zambales, the Spaniards led by Juan Ronquillo, destroyed three of the six Dutch ships led by Admiral John Derickson Lamb in the two-day battle. This was part of a series of Dutch attacks on the Philippines in the early part of the 17th century. This is known in history as the second battle of Playa Honda. Fort Paynauen served as a prison not only for the recalcitrant natives of Zambales but also for Spanish officials who angered the Spanish Governor General or Archbishop of Manila. During rhe administration of Governor General Juan de Vargas Hurlado (1678-1684), he and the Archbishop of Manila, Don Felipe Pardo were not in good terms. When Archbishop Pardo became powerful, Vargas' trusted followers were incarcerated in Fort Paynauen.

Subic Bay, Zambales

Subic Bay has the country's only remaining three-layered virgin canopy rainforest teeming with wildlife and foliage. Of the dozen known vessels that were sunk during the last world war, seven are now dive sites. Of the seven vessels, three are from the American Navy, one is from the Japanese, one is from the Spanish, and the rest are barges and landing crafts. The significant vessels fom the American Naval Forces are the El

Capitana, the Catalina Patrol Aircraft, and the USS new York, the flagship of the North Atlantic Squadron. The Japanese Oryoku Maru, christened as "Hell Ship," was even a luxury liner. It was actually carrying more than a thousand Americans and Allied Prisoners when the Americans made the deadly mistake of attacking it, thus sending their own people and allies to a watery grave. The USS New York, which was scuttled by the US Navy in 1941 at the approach of the Japanese, is now the home of multitudes of marine life species. To swim past the barrels of those massive cannons while schools of talakitok dart overhead in this eerie environment is never to be forgotten. La Gallega, a scaled-down faithful reconstruction of an authentic Spanish galleon used to be commissioned for one's cruising trip along the bay. It is host to the sprawling Subic Bay
