Accommodation Rating
Accommodation facilities on certain tours may vary. Some luxurious tours may have one (or more) nights off the beaten track, where we could spend the night in a homestay, or in a simple guesthouse so we can include a location we think well worth it. On the other hand, a tour rated as 'rough' might include few good hotels throughout its route. The overall accommodation rating refers to the norm across the entire lodging facilities used on a certain tour. Moreover, the rating definitions are obviously subjective, so treat them with appropriate caution.
A tour that includes extensive camping, home stays and/or very basic local hotels. These tours are often conducted in remote regions, where travel-related infrastructure doesn’t exist.
A tour that includes extensive stays in local hotels or unrated accommodation facilities. On this type of tour, the accommodation facilities will have a very basic range of services and the overall service might be rather poor.
A tour that is mostly based on good hotels and usually goes to places where the travel-related infrastructure is well developed.

Day 1. arrival in mongolia.
Arrival at Ulaanbaatar airport, just out of the Mongolian capital city. After immigration formalities, meet the local guide and head to a camp just out of the capital city for a first encounter with the Mongolian countryside. After lunch, and some time to recuperate from the long flight, take a leisurely afternoon hike to enjoy and take in the serene landscape of the semi-arid steppe. If possible, visit a nomadic family for a first encounter with the ancient customs and traditions of the Mongol nomads. Late in the evening, set in a ger camp- the cozy yet simple Mongolian version of a lodge, consisting of traditional felt-made dwellings the nomads of Central Asia often refer to as yurt.
DAY 2. MONGOL NOMADIC – KHARKHORIN
Today take a journey back in time to a place that recreates the lives of Mongolian nomads during the beginning of the 20th century. This was when Mongolia gained its independence from the Qing Dynasty and established itself as a reemerging nation under a living god-king. Attend a demonstration illustrating the daily life of Mongol nomads during this era and learn about some traditions that are carried on to these very days. After lunch in the camp, drive to Kharkhorin. Built by Chinggis Khan about 800 years ago, Kharkhorin, better known as Karakorum, was famed throughout Asia as the capital of the Mongol Empire. Within the walls of this spectacular city kings were chosen, laws made, and the fate of the next city to be conquered was determined. In the afternoon, visit the Karakorum Museum. This museum holds a permanent display of various archeological findings and compiles a picture of how the city looked like during the reign of the Mongol empire. Then ascend to a hill overlooking the small town to the Monument of Empires, erected to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the coronation of Chinggis Khan as the king of all kings of the steppes. Explore the site, portraying the history of three of the largest steppe empires that were first formed here, and enjoy the marvelous view of the sun setting over the sacred Orkhon valley before setting in the camp for the night.
DAY 3. KHARKHORIN – TSENKHER HOT SPRING
After breakfast, take a walk through Erdene Zuu Monastery, one of the country’s oldest Buddhist monasteries, in time for the morning puje – the chanting of Tibetan prayers while playing traditional musical instruments. Leave Kharkhorin and head towards the region the Mongolians often refer to as the 'horse herders' paradise' for its lush grasses and open valleys. Drive through thick pine forests to the Tsenkher hot springs, where water flows out of the ground at about 80°C (176°F). After setting in the camp for the night, enjoy a relaxing soak at the open hot-water pools under the Mongolian million-star sky!
DAY 4. TSENKHER HOT SPRINGS – THE WHITE LAKE
Drive out of the hot springs and pass through Tsetserleg, the provincial capital. Here, take an easy walk to the seven-meter-tall statue of Lord Buddha, and enjoy the view over the town, commonly known as the most charming of all cities throughout the country. In the afternoon, arrive at the hundred-branches-tree. Although this strange-looking tree has been burnt in recent years during a shamanic ceremony, the site is still considered holy and is worshiped by local people. The thousands of Khatag, silk-made pray scarves hanging on the trees in the forest, are a vivid testimony to the site's religious significance. From here, take a short walk to a good observation point for the Chuluut Canyon before taking another short drive to the camp for the night.
DAY 5. THE WHITE LAKE – ULIASTAI
Leave Arkhangai, and continue to Zavkhan province, following the course of the Ider, one of Mongolia’s mightiest rivers, which flows into the Selenge River, and on, to Lake Baikal in Siberia. In the afternoon, reach Zavkhan, the gateway to western Mongolia. Of all Mongolia’s provinces, Zavkhan has the most varied landscapes – from towering Otgontenger Peak rising 4,008 meters (13,150 feet), marking the westmost fringes of the Khangai Mountains, through beautiful lakes and vast sand dunes. Reach Uliastai, the administrative center for the province, and after checking-in the simple local hotel, climb atop Javkhalan Hill to visit the impressive stupa and for a look over the town.
DAY 6. ULIASTAI – MUKHART – ULAAGCHIIN KHAR NUUR
Drive out of Uliastai and west to the semi-arid famous Mongolian steppes. Around noontime, arrive at a vast sand dune, and drive through the sea of sands to an amazing natural phenomenon – a river flowing from a foot of a towering sand dune and runs for several kilometers through the dry desert only to vanish back into the sands, as it never appeared. After a picnic lunch by Mukhart River, drive to Senjit Kahd – a naturally formed stone arch. From here, slowly glide towards Ulaagchiin Black Lake, locked within a mighty beautiful sand dune. Arrive by late afternoon, and spend the rest of the evening exploring the dune and its surroundings.
DAY 7. ULAAGCHIN BLACK LAKE – ULAANGOM
For the early birds, an amazing sunrise awaits over the lake. After breakfast, leave the camp and drive to the sand dunes by Ulaagchiin Khar Nuur, Stop by Baga (small) Lake, and continue driving past vast sands to Ulaangom, the provincial administrative center for Uvs Province.
DAY 8. ULAANGOM – ULGII
Leave Ulaangom, and drive to the Red Mountain Pass, on the northern edge of the mighty Kharkhira-Turgen ridge. From here glide to the shores of Uureg Lake, and continue on a rather rough road driving past the beautiful Achit lake all the way to Ölgii town, the administrative center for Bayan Ölgii province, which Muslim Kazakh ma. Arrive rather late in the evening for a late dinner before checking in the simple but cozy little hotel.
DAY 9. TO ALTAI TAVAN BOGD
Leave the city early in the morning to embark on a long drive, crossing Bayan Ölgii province from east to west. The semi-arid plains that surround the provincial center slowly change into a mountainous landscape as the Altai Mountains – Mongolia’s largest mountain range – are nearing. Follow the course of the White River, and drive along Shiveet Khairkhan, a mountain sacred to the Tuvan people that inhabit this corner of Mongolia. Late in the evening, arrive at the entrance to the Tavan Bogd National Park, and meet the welcoming Tuvan hosts that would receive us in their homes for the coming two days.
DAY 10. HORSE RIDING TO POTANIN GLACIER
After breakfast, mount the horses and begin ascending towards Potanin Glacier. Stretching for some 14 km in length, the glacier is surrounded by a cluster of rising peaks that form the entire massif's namesake. Loosely translated from Mongolian, "the five sacred ones," its name refers to the five peaks of the Altai Tavan Bogd- Khuiten Peak (4,374 meters/14,350 feet), Nairamdal (4,180 meters/13,714 feet), Burged (4,068 meter/13,346 feet), and Malchin and Ölgii peaks, both of 4,050 meter/13,287 feet. Arrive in time for a slightly late picnic lunch in a magnificent vantage point over the entire massif, and after some time to rest and enjoy this marvelous sight, hop back into the saddle and ride all the way down via a different route to spend a second night by the entrance to the park.
DAY 11. BACK TO ULGII
Say farewell to the kind Tuvan hosts, board the vehicles, and head back to Ulgii town. The road takes through typical landscapes, along wide rivers, and over steep mountain passes. Before arriving back in Ulgii, pause by Sagsai Village to meet a local Golden Eagle trainer. The tradition of hunting with eagles was kept secret during the communist era, as the central government referred to it as an act of national separatism. As the communists strived to strip down every national symbol and form a new brave communist man, all religious, traditional, and cultural ceremonies and practices were abolished. Hence, here, at probably the farthest corner of the former communist bloc, the Kazakh eagle trainers secretly managed to keep this ancient tradition alive. After meeting the trainer and hearing from him about life with the eagle, continue driving to the provincial center, arriving there in time for a late dinner.
DAY 12. FLIGHT TO ULAANBAATAR
In the morning, visit the town’s largest mosque. Continue for a walk through the main bazaar before driving to the airportand boarding the flight to Ulaanbaatar. Once in the Mongolian capital, head to the city center, where modern high-rises are quickly built amid soviet-era blocks. Check-in at the hotel and take a tour of the city. Begin with the National History Museum, which holds a permanent exhibition on the different civilizations that have ruled the territory of Mongolia from prehistoric times to the present, including a significant display of objects from the era of the Great Mongol Empire. Then take a walk through the central square. Right at the heart of it, see the figure of D. Sukhbaatar, one of the heroes of the communist revolution of the 1920s, boldly raising his arm towards the statue of Chinggis Khan, the nation's forefather whose name was not allowed to be mentioned during the 70-year communist reign. In a very apt fashion, the square is surrounded by buildings of distinctively different architectural styles. Some are clear evidence of the city’s socialist past, while others serve as a striking testimony to the country’s path to development. After touring the square and its surroundings, head to the hotel for the night.
DAY 13. EXPLORING THE MONGOLIAN CAPITAL CITY
Leave the hotel on foot and head to the city center, where modern high-rises are quickly built amid Soviet-era blocks. Begin with a visit to the National History Museum, which holds a permanent exhibition on the different civilizations that have inhabited the territory of Mongolia from prehistoric times to the present. This exhibition includes a significant display of objects from the era of the Great Mongol Empire. Then, take a walk through the central square. Right at the heart of the square, see the figure of D. After lunch, visit the Choijin Lama Temple. Once the private temple of the Mongolian king, it is today one of the most beautiful Tibetan-Buddhist museums worldwide. The museum holds a well-curated collection of rare Buddhist artifacts that can be seen nowhere else, all displayed in a beautiful early 20th-century temple locked amid modern skyscrapers. In the evening, attend a traditional folk concert featuring unique Mongolian art forms before enjoying a farewell dinner in one of the city’s finest restaurants before reverting to the hotel for the night.
DAY 14. DEPARTURE FROM ULAANBAATAR
After breakfast, drive to Chinggis Khan Airport for the international flight out of Mongolia.

Mongolia Tours & Holidays
Landing in the concrete jungle of Ulaanbaatar, you might wonder where Mongolia keeps its famous wide-open spaces.
But just wait until you catch your first glimpse of sunrise over the famous Mongolian steppe. There’s no other view on Earth quite like it: mile after mile of rolling grassy plains, dotted with the white domes of gers and broken up with golden dunes or the craggy peaks of Tavan Bogd and the Altai mountains. It’s probably no surprise that our Mongolia tours are mostly about the getting out into the wild – soaking in the hot springs of Tsenkher or hiking through the Khogno Khan – but you’ll find there’s more to this country than just good views. With its epic history, brief communist past and a (proudly) democratic future, Mongolia is ready to greet the 21st century with plenty to offer the traveller.

Best time to visit mongolia.
Mongolia has an extreme continental climate due to its inland location. The best time for travelling is from May to October when the weather is pleasant.
Due to the popularity of the Naadam Festival, July is the busiest time to go; it can get crowded, but Ulaanbaatar buzzes with an incredible vibe during this time.
The wet season is from July to August and although it rains frequently during this time, the rain turns the countryside into a pleasant shade of green.
It can get extremely cold from June to October, with snowstorms sometimes grounding flights and bringing transport systems to a halt.
Culture and customs
Mongolia is known for its strong nomadic traditions, but life has recently become more urbanised for many citizens in this sparsely populated country. Almost 50% of the population live in or near an urban centre, while the other 50% live a semi-nomadic lifestyle in the countryside; although, settled agricultural communities can be found in rural areas and are growing each year. Despite this change in lifestyle, the rich nomadic heritage remains strong and traditional Mongol songs, dance, stories and clothing are still celebrated, especially during festivals and national holidays.
Many Mongolian people are Buddhist - this is evident in the monasteries and temples that populate the urban areas as well as the remote regions. Shamanism is also still in existence in some of the more isolated regions of Mongolia where the proud cultures have been somewhat protected from modern influences.
A common thread that links most Mongolians is respect for family and the importance of hospitality. Probably borne from the nomadic way of life, sharing with others and receiving guests with grace is a common theme that recurs in Mongolian society. Harsh conditions, a changeable climate and the uncertainty of nomadic life mean that most Mongolians go out of their way to provide a safe haven for family, friends and guests. It is for this reason that turning down food or not accepting a warm welcome is not advisable.
Eating and drinking
Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating. Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.
Mongolian food will probably be very different to what you’re used to. Due to many Mongolians living a nomadic lifestyle, access to ingredients and different modes of cooking are limited. Fermented milk products and meats such as goat, mutton and horse are commonly eaten. Vegetarians might find eating difficult here, especially since refusing food is considered rude when visiting people’s homes. The cafes and eateries of Ulaanbaatar offer more variety and should be frequented.
Things to try in Mongolia
These steamed meat dumplings are usually served during festive times, but can be found in restaurants and cafes all year round.
2. Khuushuur
Similar to buuz, these meat-filled dumplings are fried, not steamed. Served in the cafes of Ulaanbaatar, these pastry pockets are a cheap, flavoursome snack.
Geography and environment
Bordered by China and Russia , Mongolia is a land of mountains and plateaus, grasslands, marshes and deserts. Even though Mongolia is landlocked, Lake Khovsgol (one of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes) provides 70% of Mongolia’s fresh water. This ancient lake provides much of the drinking water for the animal and human population, with the surrounding areas providing lush habitats for wolves, ibex, deer and bears. Due to Mongolia’s significant seismic activity, there are also many hot springs and volcanoes throughout the country.
Mongolia is one of the least densely populated countries in the world, leaving much space for nomadic herders to roam. The fast-growing capital city of Ulaanbaatar is an exception, being home to high-density housing, universities and financial institutions. As an economic centre and transport hub, Ulaanbaatar has all the modern conveniences expected of an international city.
History and government
Early history.
The area now known as Mongolia has been inhabited for more than 800,000 years. Archaeological evidence, such as rock paintings, points to groups of hunters and gatherers living throughout Mongolia in prehistoric times.
Mongolia’s early history is coloured by battles and invasions, with various nomadic empires laying claim to the land. The most famous of these was the Mongol Empire, created by Genghis Khan in 1206.
This empire was known as the largest land-based empire of its time and had great success invading and claiming foreign territory, before declining due to infighting, disunity and the rise of neighbouring territories.
Recent history
Modern Mongolia is an interesting mix of Mongol, Chinese and Russian influences.
Rising up to gain independence from decades of communist rule, modern Mongolia is becoming more fast-paced and globalised as the years go by.
Holding its first democratic election in 1990, Mongolia now enjoys a time of relative peace and stability, with tourism, agriculture and mineral resources providing more abundance and improvements in infrastructure and living conditions.

How is this trip different from other journeys to Mongolia?
If you’ve been researching journeys to Mongolia, you’ve probably seen a lot of different tours at a lot of different prices. Here is how this journey is different and worth every penny:
Comfort in Transportation
We use smaller vehicles, with only four to five guests per vehicle when driving across the country. Our vehicles have air-conditioning and are actually comfortable! Many companies use old Russian vans that seat up to ten people and have no A/C (which also means a heck of a lot of dust coming through open windows!)
Comfort and Privacy in Accommodation
We use a mix of comfortable hotels and eco ger camps. We only allow 2 people per ger (you and a roommate), while some companies put 6 to 8 people in one ger! Plus, if you choose to have a private ger, that is an option (on a limited basis on this journey). The gers (yurts) we will stay in can be classified as “glamping,” and we encourage you to read more about them further down this page in the blue “About our Accommodatio ns” box.
Reasonable Drive Times
We’ve selected varied and interesting landscapes without making you spend most of your day in a vehicle. A lot of tour companies have many 9-10 hours days in a Russian van on their itineraries. Our longest drive is about 5 hours in our private, A/C vehicle.
Responsible Tourism
As with all of our journeys, this experience is triple carbon offset, door-to-door.
Is this trip right for me?
If visiting Mongolia is already on your radar, congratulations–you’ve picked a fascinating place!
But what is it actually like to visit Mongolia, a country where a quarter of the population still actively leads a nomadic life, where 3 million citizens are outnumbered by 70 million livestock? Where you can easily imagine you’ve traveled back in time and you may just encounter Genghis Khan and his army over the next hill?
Here are some practicalities to consider when deciding whether or not to join this tour.
Mongolia is expansive, wide open, and the steppe is seemingly unending. We’ll be driving between our destinations, primarily on paved roads although every journey requires a bit of off-roading to get to our camp. Our more rural drives will still be over flat ground and you shouldn’t find them too jarring, especially since we’ll be in comfortable 4x4s. (You can see our drives times in the blue box below labeled “Suggested Fitness Requirements and Drive Times.” )
Physicality
This trip does not demand a high level of fitness, although there are optional activities, such as hiking, horseback riding, and rafting that you can undertake at your own discretion and cost. We recommend fully reading the narrative itinerary for a broader picture.
To fully take advantage of the trip as planned, we recommend you be able to walk 1-2 miles unassisted, at a reasonable pace. There are short hikes planned as a group but even those are optional. There is one ~2 mile (one way) walk up a hill to visit a monastery; if you wish to hire a horse, instead, that is an option for you.
Our accommodations are basic, simple, and we’ll primarily be staying in ger camps; a “ger” is a Mongolian yurt, a circular, felt-covered tent. These won’t be the most luxurious lodgings you’ve ever had (or even top 100) but they might be the most memorable. We joke that they might not be 5-star, but they are billion -star accommodations based on the amazing views of the night sky above. We ask that you learn more about them and see photos in the “About our Accommodations (Hotels & Ger Camps)” blue box below.
If you search the internet for information about food in Mongolia, you might wonder if there’s anything on the menu but meat. Mongolians do love this meat, more than any culture we’ve encountered. In fact, our guide tells us that the older generation of Mongolians will poke fun at their grandchildren for eating vegetables, asking, “What are you–a goat?!”
That said, our ger camps and hotel will offer a mix of continental dishes, heavy on Russian salads, meat, and starches like rice, potatoes, or pasta, along with vegetables. Vegetarian dishes are available, but they rely heavily on pasta.
So, you might be thinking: long drives, glamping, and potato salad–we’re not exactly selling this trip, are we? But here is the thing: Mongolia is visually breathtaking, culturally fascinating, and unlike anywhere else you’ll ever visit.
Ulaanbaatar, home to almost half of the country’s residents, is quite a cosmopolitan town, and its museums are rich with heritage and history. The opportunity to engage with nomadic Mongolians in the countryside and learn about their daily life is invaluable. Having the opportunity to witness the Mongolian Naadam games in person is a privilege that few Westerners can claim. We’ll let you read the rest of the itinerary for highlights to get the full picture.
In short: if you’re willing to trade a few creature comforts for the opportunity to experience the real Mongolia, this is the trip for you.
Ulaanbaatar
Khogno khan national park, jalman meadows, orkhon valley, a bit about mongolia.
The Mongolian Empire was arguably one of the most influential, unifying forces that the world has ever seen.
Born a child from hardscrabble nomadic beginnings, the great leader Genghis Khan set historic wheels in motion in 1206 CE when he unified all of the warring tribes of the Mongolian Steppe. The fruits of his future conquests resulted in the largest contiguous land empire in history (second only to the British Empire for total land mass), an empire about the size of the African continent and spread widely across Eurasia. By 1279, this 13,000,000 square-mile empire stretched from the Pacific Ocean all the way to the Mediterranean Sea and into Europe.
Within this Empire, Genghis Khan spread his astonishingly anachronistic progressive views, including laws establishing religious freedom and diplomatic immunity. He created the first international postal system and history’s largest free trade zone, he lowered taxes (even abolished them for certain professions), and he created a system for dividing the spoils of war fairly among the citizenry.
Although the Empire grew for a short time after Genghis Khan’s death in 1227, by the end of the century the amassed landholdings were split between disputing family members and became their own factions. What is now geographically considered ‘Mongolia’ was ruled by China’s Qing Dynasty from 1691 until 1911, when Mongolia declared its independence. China, however, did not accept this declaration of independence and invaded Mongolia in 1921.
With the help of the Russian Red Army, Mongolia won its independence from China. However, Mongolia was dominated by the Soviet Communist regime from 1921 until 1990. The late 1930’s saw a horrific purge of Mongolian society by the Communists, a purge that saw Tibetan Buddhism all but obliterated and over 18,000 monks summarily executed. Government and military leaders, academics, and anyone thought a threat to Communism in Mongolia was murdered.
The Mongolian Revolution of 1990, inspired by similar revolutions happening in Eastern Europe, led to the peaceful renunciation of Communism, and Mongolia’s first free, multi-party elections were held in July 1990. Today, Tibetan Buddhism is again flourishing and monasteries are being rebuilt. There is also a resurgence of interest in the father of Mongolia, Genghis Khan–an interest that was actively quashed and persecuted for most of the 20th century.
Mongolia’s modern population of 3.1 million is spread over 604,000 square miles; in other words, Mongolia is twice as big as Texas but with 1/8 the population. About a third of the population is still nomadic, tending to the the country’s some 66.5 million heads of livestock (sheep, goat, cattle, horses, and camels).
Traditional sports, played during the time of Genghis Khan, still factor heavily into the culture; the annual Naadam games which you’ll witness include horse racing, archery, and wrestling.
Come with us and explore the country’s wide open spaces and find out why Mongolia is truly the “Land of the Eternal Blue Sky.”

About Buddhism in Mongolia (click to open)
Buddhism was originally introduced to Mongolia in the third century BCE during the time of the Indian Emperor Ashoka.
The second wave of Mongolian Buddhism developed under the reign of Genghis Khan’s grandson Kublai Khan in the late 13th century. Kublai Khan developed a close relationship with the head of the Sakya school of Buddhism, Drogön Chogyal Phagpa. The fall of the Mongolian Empire saw the decline of Tibetan Buddhism in Mongolia, until the third wave of Buddhism reached the steppe in the 16th century.
Altan Khan was a distant descendant of Genghis Khan and leader of the Western tribes of the Mongols. Sonam Gyatso, the leader of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, was invited to Mongolia in the 1570s by Altan Khan. While in Mongolia, Sonam Gyatso was publicly pronounced the reincarnation of Drogön Chogyal Phagpa and given the title “Dalai Lama” (“Ocean Lama” in Mongolian) by Altan Khan.
Altan Khan, then, was revealed as a reincarnation of Kublai Khan, thus refreshing the 13th-century relationship between Kublai Khan and Drogön Chogyal. With this relationship, they formed an alliance that gave Altan Khan the legitimacy of “royalty” for his leadership role and the Gelug school was afforded protection and patronage from Mongolia. This alliance with the Mongols would later prove instrumental in establishing the Gelug order as the rulers of Tibet during the reign of the Fifth Dalai Lama.
Altan Khan awarded the title of Dalai Lama posthumously to Sonam Gyatso’s two previous reincarnations, making Sonam Gyatso the Third Dalai Lama. The Fourth Dalai Lama was born in Mongolia, none other than Altan Khan’s grandson who was enthroned in Tibet in 1601.
With the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1911, the Mongols declared their independence from China, choosing the 8th Bogd Gegeen as their “Bogd Khan,” or “holy ruler.” This period lasted until China invaded Mongolia in 1919; with Russian assistance, the Mongols defeated the Chinese forces in 1920. The Bogd Khan became the state leader until his death in 1924, then the Soviet occupation of Mongolia began.
During the nearly 70 years as a Soviet satellite state, Mongolian Buddhism was virtually wiped out. In 1937, the Soviet-allied Mongolian Communist Party banned Buddhism and the government executed nearly 20,000 monks; thousands more were sent to Siberian labor camps and most of the country’s 2,000 monasteries were destroyed.
Mongolia’s peaceful Democratic revolution in 1990 opened the doorway for a Buddhist revival. The 19th Kushok Bakula Rinpoche served as India’s ambassador to Mongolia from 1990 to 2000, and he helped reestablish monasteries and Buddhist learning centers all over the country. This Ladakh-born lama, a reincarnation of one of the 16 Arhats, played a large role in the comeback of Tibetan Buddhism. In fact, it is said to have been prophesied that Bakula Arhat would one day come from India to revive Buddhism in Mongolia.
Modern Mongolia is currently experiencing a true Buddhist renaissance. The monastic population has grown from 110 monks in 1990 to over 3000 today, and reconstruction is underway at many historic monasteries that were decimated in the Communist purges. Freedom of religion has returned to Mongolia, a freedom that Genghis Khan first afforded all Mongols in the 13th century.
Detailed Daily Itinerary
Arriving in Ulaanbaatar
Sain baina uu and welcome to Mongolia, the Land of the Eternal Blue Sky! You’ll be picked up at the airport and driven to our centrally located hotel in the capital city, Ulaanbaatar. Most flights arrive in the morning, so after a late morning & early afternoon rest, we can start our adventure slowly with a visit to a local cultural museum. These visuals will help lay the groundwork and build an understanding for the sites you will encounter during this journey.
Buddhism was introduced to the Mongolian steppe in the first millennium CE; in the 13th century, Tibetan Buddhism became the state religion of the Yuan Empire (which was established by Genghis Khan’s grandson, Kublai Khan). After the collapse of the Mongolian Empire, though, shamanism once again ruled the steppe.
However, in the late 1500’s, Mongolian military leader Altan Khan brought Tibetan Buddhism back to Mongolia in a big way. It was Altan Khan, in fact, that created the title of “Dalai Lama” (“Dalai” being Mongolian for “Ocean”). It was the patronage of Mongolia which propelled the Gelug sect of Tibetan Buddhism into political power in Tibet.
Gandan Monastery was one of the few monasteries to escape destruction by the Communists, and it was kept open as a ‘showpiece’ to visiting foreign dignitaries. With the fall of Communism in 1990, Gandan became a fully functional monastery once again. One of the highlights of Gandan is the 87′ (26.5m) statue of Avalokitesvara; this statue of the Buddha of Compassion is said to be the tallest indoor statue in the whole world.
On our way to Jalman Meadows, we’ll stop at another breathtaking statue–the Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue. This 131’ (40m) statue, a silver giant rising out of the steppe, was erected in 2008 to honor the founding father of Mongolia, and there is a small but interesting museum in the statue’s base.
Finally, we’ll make our way to our hidden gem of an eco-camp: Jalman Meadows. This will be your first experience in a traditional Mongolian ger!
Ger is the Mongolian equivalent of the Russian word “yurt.” Gers are portable felt tents, round in shape, and perfectly suited to nomadic life on the steppe and Mongolian climatic conditions. Mongolians have been living in gers for thousands of years, long before the Mongolian Empire was even formed. In fact, early on in Genghis Khan’s military career, he named his first large group of followers “People of the Felt Walls.”
Jalman Meadows is nestled within the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area, one of Mongolia’s true wilderness areas that extends all the way up to the Russian-Siberian frontier. This area constitutes the transition zone of steppe and the southernmost reaches of the forests of Siberia. There are steppe valleys, lush meadows along the Tuul River and extensive larch forests with patches of birch.
This will be our home for the next 3 nights and a perfect place to unplug and settle into the rhythms of nomadic life. In fact, there is a nomadic family nearby who can show you how they milk their cows (and horses!) and show you the delicious art of crafting Mongolian dairy products. Did you know that you can distill vodka from yogurt?!
You’ll have plenty of opportunity for rest, exploration, and adventure in Jalman Meadows. Optional activities include hiking, horseback riding, and rafting along the river (half-day or full-day trips, wherein a yak pulls the raft upstream on a cart!) You can even build your own sauna ger at the river’s edge. We’ll come together for homemade meals, and our amazing guide will share stories of Mongolian history and culture.
Back to the Capital
On the morning of July 5th, we’ll retrace our steps back to the capital (3-hour drive) and we’ll spend the night in Ulaanbaatar before heading out west tomorrow.
We’ll enjoy the afternoon in the city, taking advantage of the wonderful museums downtown. We can also take in a traditional folk music concert later this afternoon.
Khogno Khan
On July 6th, we’ll drive west from Ulaanbaatar toward Khogno Tarna National Park (better known as Khogno Khan, a total of ~4.5-hours driving). Our eco-camp for the next 2 nights is at the base of Khogno Khan mountain, providing wonderful hiking opportunities to nearby 17th-century monastic ruins. This area is on the border of three provinces and contains the beauty of the steppe, the forest, and the desert.
Here we’ll be joined by a Mongolian Buddhist monk for a few days, who will tell us more about this remarkable renaissance of Buddhism currently happening. Mongolia has a long and fascinating history of Buddhism since the 3rd century BCE, but it was virtually eliminated during the 70-year rule of the Soviet-allied Mongolian Communist Party in the 20th century.
Kharkhorin & Erdene Zuu
On the 8th, we’ll head 2 hours to the city of Kharkhorin. In the 13th century, this site was the home of Kharkhorum, the first capital of the Mongol Empire, built strategically at an intersection of the Silk Road routes in the area. We’ll visit a fascinating museum here to learn more about this progressive city built by Genghis Khan’s son Ogodei. Home to Christian churches, Muslim mosques, pagan temples, and Buddhist temples, Kharkhorum was most likely the most religiously open and tolerant city in the world at the time.
We’ll also visit the nearby monastery complex of Erdene Zuu. The Tibetan Buddhist monastery Erdene Zuu was originally established in 1585, but rebuilt multiple times through the following centuries. The few temples here that survived the Communist purges of the 1930s were converted to a museum; today, it is both a functional monastery and a truly beautiful museum. The grounds, surrounded by 108 stupas along a wall, are home to a Chinese-style temple, a Tibetan-style temple, and a traditional Mongolian ger temple.
We’ll depart from our hotel on the 9th and head to the breathtaking Orkhon Valley. Perched on a picturesque hill, our ecocamp is the perfect place to relax and watch the sun set over the steppe, over the nomads gers and their grazing livestock. (This is where the photo at the very top of this page was taken!)
UNESCO recognizes this valley as being inhabited continuously for the past 62,000 years; borrowing from UNESCO , “The Orkhon Valley clearly demonstrates how a strong and persistent nomadic culture led to the development of extensive trade networks and the creation of large administrative, commercial, military and religious centers. The empires that these urban centers supported undoubtedly influenced societies across Asia and into Europe and in turn absorbed influence from both east and west in a true interchange of human values.”
The next morning we’ll start back to Ulaanbaatar, visiting a nomadic family along the way. We’ll learn more about this traditional Mongolian lifestyle, still followed by more than a third of the population. We’ll learn about the rhythms of nomadic life, following grass and shelter along the steppe year round, and the endless preparations that must be made in the summer to survive the long, cold Mongolian winters.
You’ll enjoy the overwhelming kindness of true nomad hospitality, and this may be a perfect opportunity to try some authentic Mongolian dairy products. Perhaps you’ll try the quintessential Mongolian drink, airag –fermented horse milk.
We’ll have this afternoon in Ulaanbaatar to continue our explorations and hit whatever remaining museums tickle our fancy. Don’t forget about shopping, too: Mongolia is absolutely famous for its cashmere. But no matter what, get a good night’s sleep tonight because tomorrow is Naadam!
National Naadam Festival
Naadam celebrates the traditional Mongolian games of wrestling, horse racing, and archery. The games of Naadam are listed by UNESCO as an “ Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity ,” and they were described in 13th-century book The Secret History of the Mongols . The National Naadam is held on July 11. We’ll witness the stately opening ceremonies and the first round of Mongolian wrestling, a site you’ll not soon forget.
Mongolian wrestling is mesmerizing to witness; the first wrestler to touch the ground with any body part other than his hands or feet loses. While the skills are remarkable, the pageantry around the wrestling matches is even more captivating. Mongolia takes its wrestling very seriously, and the current Mongolian president was a wrestler. Naadam must be seen–and the energy must be felt–to be believed!
On the 12th we’ll head into the countryside about 2 hours to witness a rural Naadam. These Naadams are a incredibly fun because of the more intimate scale and the ability to get closer to the action.
The horse races are a cross-country event, with 6-year-old to 13-year-old jockeys (yes, you read that right!) racing horses for 15–30 km (10–18 miles).
On the evening of the 12th, we’ll enjoy our final dinner together in Mongolia, reflecting on all we’ve experienced together in this fascinating country. The tour ends after breakfast tomorrow, but we know for certain Mongolia will have a place in your heart forever!

FAQ: Visas, Vaccines, Food, Money & more.
- Passport and Visa information

- Money & How to Get Local Currency
- Communication / Internet Connectivity
PASSPORT/VISA
- What do I need to know about the visa?
Your passport MUST be valid at least 6 months beyond the end date of the trip, and you’ll need two empty pages in the Visas section of your passport (make sure they are in the Visa section, not the Amendment or Endorsement section).
American, Canadians, and citizens of the U.K. will receive a visa upon arrival; there’s nothing you need to do before you arrive to Mongolia. For other countries, please check visalist.io to see what your Mongolian visa requirements are.
- Can my dietary needs be accommodated?
Mongolia is a culture that loves its meat. However, it is possible to request vegetarian food for at our ger camps and hotels; vegetarians, though, maybe wish to bring snacks to supplement their diet, in the way of nuts, protein bars, or veg “jerky.” Most vegetarian meals consist of pasta.
A typical meal at the camps typically consists of a meat-based protein (mostly chicken and beef, with occasional pork or turkey), a starch (rice or pasta) and vegetables, in addition to a salad and soup starter and usually a dessert. Breakfasts are typically buffet-style and include eggs, fruit, grains, and local dairy products.
Within Mongolia’s traditional nomadic animal husbandry culture, meat and dairy are dietary staples. The growing season is about 100 days, and because of the harsh climate much of the year, it is unsuited to most cultivation. In fact, only 1% of the arable land in Mongolia is actually cultivated with crops!
Wine and beer and, of course, vodka, is available at all of our camps and hotels (not included in the trip).
Please include any special dietary allergies or needs on your registration, or reach out to us with any questions you may have before registration.
- Can I drink the water?
In a word, No. Although many cities around the world are getting more advanced public water systems, we don’t recommend it. Not only from a pathogen standpoint, but it’s a different set of bacteria than your body is used to. Why risk an upset stomach if you don’t have to? We recommend drinking only bottled water, and you will want to rinse your toothbrush off in bottled water. If you’d like to bring a reusable bottle and a means of sterilization to save on plastic water bottle consumption, you are more than welcome. Otherwise, we will have access to bottled water at all times.
- What vaccines do I need?
RetreaTours requires COVID-19 vaccine plus booster for this journey. No other vaccines are required to enter Mongolia, but we suggest you work with your physician or your area’s travel health expert to decide what options are best for you. You can read the American CDC’s recommendations here and the UK’s NHS recommendations here.
- What about malaria?
Malaria is not a risk in Mongolia, but again, we request that you work with your physician or travel doctor when making these choices. Please see our blog about this topic for more information .
- What are the physical requirements for this trip?
Please see the separate section on this page titled “Suggested Fitness Requirements.”
- Do I need travel insurance?
Travel insurance is required on this trip; please see the separate “ Travel Insurance ” toggle on this page.
- How much money should I bring?
All of your meals and transportation are covered, so you just have to gauge how much you want to spend on extras, such as alcohol and souvenirs. After registration, we’ll let you know how much some of the optional activities cost. You may also want to shop in Mongolia, famous for its cashmere!
- How do I get the local currency?
You can either exchange cash in Mongolia or use a local ATMs. Just make sure you call your bank and credit card company to let them know you’ll be traveling in Mongolia so they don’t put a hold on your card when they see it being used halfway across the world.
- What kind of hotels will we be staying at?
Please see the separate “About our Accommodations” toggle on this page.
- Will I be able to charge my electronics (phone, iPad, etc)?
Yes, just be sure to bring along a Universal Travel Adaptor that can go with you anywhere in the world! Some of the eco-camps will not have electricity within the ger, and you will need to charge your devices in the restaurant or lounge ger. We highly recommend bringing a portable battery charger such as this one .
COMMUNICATION
- How can my family get ahold of me in an emergency?
Before the trip begins we will give you the contact information for our guide and our partner travel office in Ulaanbaatar; in addition, we will give you an American number good for text messages and voicemails (when we have internet access). An international phone plan will work in the cities on major roads, but we will be out of cell signal reach at some of our remote camps.
- About the Wifi
You will have wifi at our hotels in Ulaanbaatar. However, please understand that you will not be connected to the internet during periods of this trip, mostly during our stay at the eco-camps.
About our Accommodations (Hotels & Ger Camps)
During our time together in Mongolia, we’ll be staying at mix of a modern hotel and ger camps:
- Ulaanbaatar – Bayangol Hotel (by the by, this is where the current Nechung Oracle, the Dalai Lama’s personal Oracle, spends many of his summers. This hotel is where we had the good fortune to have a private audience with him in 2019 , while he was in possession of Padmasambhava relics!)
- Hogno Khan Mountains – Khogno Khan eco-camp
- Kharhorin – Dreamland camp
- Orkhon Valley – Ursa Major Geolodge
- Jalman Meadows, Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area – Jalman Meadows Wilderness Camp
Please understand that lodging is extremely simple and spare in Mongolia.
We’ll be staying in a hotel in Ulaanbaatar (5 total nights, non-consecutive), complete with an ensuite bathroom (with western toilet and hot water), air conditioning, and wifi.
In our other destinations, we are staying at camps composed of gers, which are traditional round, felt Mongolian tents. These camps have been carefully chosen based on their location, their amenities, and their environmentally-sound practices.
None of the gers have an attached bathroom, and the toilet can sometimes be 100 to 200 feet from your tent. Three of the ger camps have shower options (2 modern, 1 more traditional), and our one night in Orkhon Valley offers hot towels but no shower facilities.
It is rare that a ger has one big bed, so couples will mostly sleep in two twin beds within the gers.
The gers are simple but comfortable. However, as they are tents in an eco-camp, it is reasonable to expect a few insects in your ger; don’t worry, nothing dangerous, just a small beetle here or daddy long legs there.
At times, there may only be charging stations in the main ger, and electricity may not be provided 24/7. For those of you with CPAP machines, we can devise a way to charge your machine from our 4×4 vehicles but we cannot guarantee a steady electricity supply at night.
Please read more about the history of gers here.
Please see the photos below of the interiors of the typical gers we’ll be staying in.
Suggested Fitness Requirements & Drive Times
This isn’t a very rigorous journey, although there are physical activities you can add on: horseback riding, rafting, and hiking, as well as camel riding. All physical activities are optional, and we’ll let you know what to expect before each activity!
To take full advantage of this journey, we suggest being able to walk 1-2 miles at a time without stopping, at your own pace. There is one ~2 mile (one way) walk up a hill to visit a monastery; if you wish to hire a horse, instead, that is an option for you.
We will be driving for several multi-hour stretches times on this trip, so guests should be able to sit in a vehicle for up to 5 hours at a time (although we can stop for bathroom breaks and leg-stretching along the way).
Most of the roads we will use between destinations are paved, but we will also be offroading as we get close to our eco-camps. These rides will be across flat, grassy steppe and you should not find them to be jarring or uncomfortable.
This itinerary was specifically created to reduce the amount of time spent in vehicles. Here are our estimated drive times:
- Ulaanbaatar to Jalman Meadows: 3 hours
- Jalman Meadows, return to Ulaanbaatar: 3 hours
- Ulaanbaatar to Khogno Khan: 4.5 hours
- Khogno Khan to Kharkhorin; 90 minutes
- Kharkorin to Orkhon Valley: 2.5 hours
- Orkhon Valley to Ulaanbaatar; 6 hours

The Kazakh people hold one of the most spectacular and ancient events called Eagle Hunting recognized as the Intangible Cultural Heritage under UNESCO. The festival was organized not very far from the capital on 4 th of March, 2023. It is visited by a lot of foreign tourists to enjoy and explore this event. This event is filled with traditional songs, dances, and horse-events and it has become one of the most popular events in Mongolia drawing attention of both the locals and the foreign travelers. Kazakhs are nomads who train Golden Eagles for hunting compete to show off whose eagle is the most skilled at catching prey and following the command of their owners.
The festival begins with a parade of hunters holding their eagles marching with their horses. The competition of best traditional costume and equipment is followed by games to test best communication techniques between the eagle and the hunter. The other main competition involves the fastest and most attractive descent of an eagle from top of the mountain to the owner on the valley floor. Other authentic games are enjoyed by the Kazakhs such as kukbar (tug of war on horseback), archery and horse racing. Hunters put on their best costumes while decorating their eagles with the traditional “eagle costumes”. The Eagle Festival is one of the best opportunities to catch a glimpse into the area’s unique culture, which is different to other parts of Mongolia.
Organizers: Ulaanbaatar City Tourism Department, Ulaanbaatar Tourism Association, Mongolian Eagle hunters Association

Customized 5 Days Ulaanbaatar Trip with Private Guide & Driver
Mongolia is a lot different from what we have seen on the internet; its BETTER! There are beautiful national parks and landscapes that are surreal. Our guide, Miss Deema and our driver Eric took us to some the most breathtaking scenery one could imagine. Great photo opportunities abound! Both Hustai and Terelj national parks were different in their own way with unique geography and wildlife. Accommodation in the yurts (gers) was warm and comfortable and is highly recommended. As was the Bactrian camel ride! And the introduction to throat singing. Deema's knowledge of the country, its people, and its history was outstanding. As was Eric's driving skills. Both much appreciated. Overall this trip is a GREAT introduction to this great country and it's unique culture and people.

Essence of Mongolia - 5 Days
A great experience, getting a taste of different environments, experiencing a little bit of the traditional nomadic culture and food, all with the help of a knowledgeable and friendly guide. Ulaanbaatar traffic is no joke, but once outside the city you really start to feel the immense openness and beautiful expanse of the countryside. Highly recommended.
Nomadic Mongolia
I did enjoy the trip. May be the meals could be organized better.
Mongolia's highest peak, Climb to Mt.Khuiten
That was an extraordinary trip with Discover Altai Team. The Altai region is so beautiful, the nomadic families were very welcomed. I can't recommend enough the team and trip organization. My personal tips are: pack enough warm clothes, the night gets cold in tent. We had an amazing experience in this region and definitely recommend for everyone!!!
Customized Mongolia Gobi Desert Adventure with Private Guide & Driver
I had an amazing experience!! Everything was planed and executed perfectly, my guide and driver Deema and Khangai were wonderful it was a pleasure to share my trip with them. I learned a lot and experienced some of the most breathtaking views I’ve ever seen. I strongly recomend this tour to anyone interested.

Wild Mongolia
Intrepid's Wild Mongolia tour was above and beyond my expectations. Our guide TEM, our drivers and staff we met along the way did all they could to make our tour interesting, educational, adventurous, safe and lots of fun. Mongolia is so much more than I expected. I never felt like we we roughing it. Accommodations were unique, scenic and sufficient. The homestays were a challenge that bonded the group and the families. The activities gave us a variety of experiences. I highly recommend is you want a challenging, adventurous tour with not too much physical exertion.
Golden Voyage tour
I and my family traveled Mongolia in summer 2017. Mongolia is dream land and must travel country for any tourists. Our trip organized by "Nomadic of Blue Sky". I'd like to say thanks. Our guide and driver was very good. If you are going to travel to Mongolia I would recommend this company. Oliver's family
Essence of Mongolia - 7 Days
We signed up for the 7-day "Essence of Mongolia" tour. Our tour guide, Shuree, and driver, Maga, were absolutely amazing. We appreciated the flexibility of the tour schedule -- the activities were nicely spread out and were not back-to-back -- so we never felt that we had to be constantly rushing from place to place. We also throughly enjoyed our experiences staying with the nomad families. The families were very warm and friendly, and it was nice to see how each family was slightly different from one another (some families were bigger, each family had different animals that they reared, etc). Shuree, our tour guide, was also incredibly attentive to our needs and interests over the course of the tour. For example, I had told her at some point that I liked the history of the Mongol Empire, so she took a lot of time and effort to go through all the exhibits with me when we were at the various museums (and also told me stories about the different Khans during our car rides). There were so many other wonderful examples like this. Overall, my husband and I had an amazing experience. The tour provided us glimpses into different parts of Mongolian history and culture, and really, the "Essence of Mongolia". Our guide and driver were always present and caring, and we always felt welcomed and well taken care of. Thank you, Tour Mongolia!

Trekking in the Altai Mountains of Mongolia
The trip was absolutely amazing. From the pristine mountains and valleys, the excellent food and Daurens expertise and knowledge of the area, the trip couldn't have been run better. If you're planning a trip to Mongolia the Altai Mountains are a must see as they are just so beautiful and all the local nomads are incredibly friendly and helpful. Dauren was a fantastic guide who seemed to know everything about the area and answered any questions we asked. He also knew a lot of the nomads personally and they would often stop to chat with him and invite us all for some food or drinks. He was also quick to adapt to things like illness in the group by arranging horses or a local ger for the person to rest in. Overall I'd strongly recommend the Altai Mountains to anyone who enjoys beautiful hikes and I don't think you could get a better guide than Dauren.
Essence of Mongolia - 4 Days
Loved staying with the host families in the Gers and getting a glimpse into their busy lives. The Taki horses were another standout highlight. It was a jam packed tour with a great guide and driver.
Gobi Tour 5D/4N
Tour is great!! Especially guides are so nice people. They introduced lots of things and very care for me always. First day was almost only moved by car. So If you want to came Gobi, you should take a minimum 5 days tour. Additionally, before I thought could came for my self, but actually ir impossible. Should take tour because No public buses and always off road, Moreover there is no town, Should find gel hotels.

This trip was amazing! I couldn't recommend it more highly. Huge landscapes and big skies, history, culture and warm and generous people. The trip itself was very well organized with a fantastic guide (thank you Gan-Erdene) and really competent great drivers. The accommodation in Gers was great - in many places as it started to get cold - they would come and light the stove at night and again early in the morning - super cozy! The only advice I would give is to bring a sleeping bag for the stay with the Nomad family (if you have room in your bag and especially as the weather gets colder) along with a good coat and rain coat. But in every single way this was a trip of a lifetime.

Olympic Games 2024
What to Follow on Day 1 of the Qazaqstan Barysy Grand Slam 2024
-48kg: Boukli in the Driving Seat The favourite at -48kg will undoubtedly be the top seed and world number 6 Shirine Boukli (FRA), who will be looking to cement her place as one of the seeded players for her home Olympics. The Frenchwoman took an excellent gold medal on home soil at the Paris Grand Slam in February, in what has so far been her only outing on the WJT in 2024.
If she is to top the podium here, Boukli may have to get past the likes of number two seed and Tashkent Grand Slam 2024 winner Sabina Giliazova (AIN), surprise European champion from two weeks ago, Kristina Dudina (AIN), bronze medallist here last year Khalimajon Kurbonova (UZB), or home favourite and fifth seed Galiya Tynbaeva (KAZ). Tynbaeva will be eager to improve on her fifth place finish at this event last year.
After taking silver in Dushanbe last week, Tugce Beder (TUR) increased her lead over compatriot Sila Ersin (TUR) in the Olympic rankings and comes into this event as the number four seed. Meanwhile, Ersin is unseeded and has an uphill battle if she is to turn the tide and overtake Beder in the rankings. For the athletes from Israel and Brazil, the race for an Olympic place in the category is also going to go down to the wire.
-60kg: All-Kazakh Showdown for Shamshadin and Smetov Following his gold medal-winning performance in front of his home crowd in Dushanbe, Muhammadsoleh Quvatov (TJK) finds himself in a continental qualifying position for the Paris Olympics and is the eighth seed in Astana. He will be hoping to pick up yet more points and solidify his position but faces the prospect of a quarter-final against Tokyo Olympic silver medallist and top seed Yung-Wei Yang (TPE).
All eyes will be on team Kazakhstan, however, and the three-way race between 4-time grand slam medallist Magzhan Shamshadin, double Olympic medallist Yeldos Smetov and former cadet world champion Nurkhanat Serikbayev. 21-year-old Serikbayev currently leads in the rankings but is absent from Astana this time.
After taking silver in Dushanbe last week, Shamshadin is only a few places behind and would overtake his younger counterpart with a podium finish at this event; he won gold in 2023. Smetov trails both significantly, so he must top the podium here to have any chance of catching his teammates. Shamshadin and Smetov are drawn to meet in the semi-final, a potential clash that would have the host nation on the edge of their seats.
-52kg: Seeded Athletes Have the Most to Lose Three of the medallists from Dushanbe last week will be back in action this weekend. The Swiss duo of Fabienne Kocher and Binta Ndiaye contested the final in Tajikistan and their gold and silver medals helped their country top the medal table at an IJF World Judo Tour event for the first time. They are seeded seventh and sixth, respectively, and are thus drawn to meet at the semi-final stage. Both are in a qualifying position for the Olympics but Ndiaye maintains a slender lead.
All the seeded athletes are currently in Olympic qualifying positions but there are numerous unseeded athletes lying just outside the direct qualification zone who will be on a mission to climb the rankings. Among them are Sofia Asvesta (CYP) who finished 5th last week and sits in a continental spot, Antalya Grand Slam 2024 bronze medallist Ana Viktoria Puljiz (CRO) and Abu Dhabi Grand Slam 2023 bronze medallist Naomi Van Krevel (NED).
-66kg: Rahimov’s Not Resting on His Laurels Twenty year old Serdar Rahimov (TKM) became the first Turkmen judoka to win a grand slam, the first ever, when he struck gold in Dushanbe a week ago. His 1000 points flung him 21 places up the World Ranking List and sat him inside the Olympic qualification zone for the first time, doubling the Turkmenistan team’s direct entry; Maysa Pardayeva (-57 kg) being the other qualified athlete.
Rahimov arrives in Kazakhstan as 7th seed, not backing away from the challenge of fighting again so soon and not buckling under the pressure of watchful eyes. Getting through the first two rounds should be fairly straight forward but to back up his new medal-winning image, he’ll need to pass double Olympic medallist Baul An (KOR) or perhaps Chopanov (AIN) in the quarter-final. It won’t be easy but he’s no longer under the radar and must stand up for his gold medal. Can he do it again?
Meanwhile, flamboyant French entertainer Walid Khyar (FRA) is seeded number one, just as he was last week. Unlike Rahimov, Khyar will not want a repeat of his Dushanbe performance having lost in his first contest against unseeded Nutfulloev (UZB). Frascadore (CAN) might pay the price for Khyar’s loss a week ago when they meet in their first preliminary contest. As Frascadore is in a head-to-head battle with Kelly Deguchi (-52 kg) for a continental quota place for Paris, it could be a very hard day indeed for the Canadian.
-57kg: World Medallists Assemble 4 of the 6 world medallists in this category have gathered in pool B, a special kind of reunion none would have wanted. Funakubo (JPN) sits at the top of the quarter while Smythe-Davis (GBR), Monteiro (POR) and Kowalczyk (POL) are all in the bottom half of it meaning at least two of them won’t make it to be quarter-final. This is a stark reminder of why seeding and current ranking is so significant.
The other two world medallist, both world champions, will be happy to have been separated from the rest. Silva (BRA) is away from all of the other 5 on the bottom half, heading up pool D. Deguchi (CAN), world number one, current world champion and owner of the most points of any athlete on the Tour, is in pool A and shouldn’t be disturbed at all on her way to the semi-final. She can sit back and enjoy the carnage in pool B!
It’s a 10 a.m. kick-off and if you can’t be in Kazakhstan to witness it in person, download the all-new JudoTV app and get watching on the go!
