GB’s Roger Hammond takes today’s win in style after a bunch sprint.

The 32 year old Discovery Channel rider, who is captaining the Great Britain team here on the Tour of Britain, was the strongest sprinter in a line up that includes World Champion Tom Boonen.

Following the start in Blackpool, two Davatamon-Lotto riders made an early break after just 5 kilometres. The bunch worked well to ensure the riders were unable to stay away.

Hammond’s winning ride now moves him up to fourth place in the general classification with four stages left before the finish on The Mall in London. However, he is 2minute 44second behind the race leaders.

He commented: “This is a totally different feeling to last year when I won the stage but the race was already over. I didn’t even think about winning until the last five kilometres but it was a great team effort from Great Britain.”

South Australia’s Mathew Goss is now wears the leaders yellow jersey with an advantage of just two seconds over Martin Pedersen of team CSC.

He commented: “I’m stoked to be wearing the yellow jersey. This is the biggest Tour that I’ve ever led. It’s going to be tough to hold on to it.”

Tomorrow’s stage is due to start at Bradford’s City Hall and Yorkshireman Russell Downing will be looking for a good ride into his home town, Sheffield. After a strong ride today Downing is wearing the green points jersey.

He commented: “My aim was to come here and ride consistently and get to the front most days. Tomorrow is my home town and I’ll be aiming to do well.”

Stage 3: Bradford to Sheffield – Thursday 31st August

Yorkshire hosts the third stage of this year’s Tour of Britain, and the day’s racing looks set to be the toughest stage of the race, with riders facing the prospect of barely one stretch of flat road all day. The day’s racing starts at Bradford’s Centenary Square at 10:15am.

The neutralised section of this stage will be about 7.9kms long, so the race will begin properly at about 10:30am at the Stansfield Arms to the North of Bradford. Riders will begin to climb up towards Beckwithshaw on the B6161 and will begin the King of the Mountains section at around 10:45am.

Catch the first sprint of the day as the race heads through Harrogate. Riders will dash past the church on the A6040 from 11:05am. From Harrogate, the race will turn for Wetherby and Tadcaster

Riders will be refueling on the go at the feed station located by the Spread Eagle pub in Darrington from around 12:35pm, so it’ll be a great spot to watch them grab a drink as you sit with yours.

Millhouse Green hosts the second sprint of the day from 1:30pm. Watch the riders stream past Croft Drive in a bid to win vital points.

Two King of the Mountain stages follow in quick succession as the race crosses the stunning Bradfield Moors. It is here that the Tour of Britain takes in The Strines area of the moors for the first time in its history.

There are two grueling hills here, one ending just before The Strines coaching inn. Between 1:50pm and 2:15pm, riders will be battling up the taxing climbs of this wonderful bit of landscape as they chase the polka dot jersey that denotes the best climber.

Hathersage hosts the third sprint of the day at about 2:25pm before the race turns towards the home straight and the finishline at Pinstone Street in Sheffield. Expect the riders to finish at about 2:45pm.

TOUR OF BRITAIN 2021 STAGE 2 RESULTS

Robin carpenter goes long.

tour of britain results stage 2

On stage 2 of the Tour of Britian the riders faced a 114 mile stint from Sherford to Exeter. A five man-break including Rally Cycling’s Robin Carpenter led most of the race until Carpenter went solo with 16 miles to go. Carpenter rode the finale with class holding off the chasing peloton by 33 seconds to win stage 2. Carpenter now leads the race by 22 seconds ahead of Wout van Aert. It’s the biggest win of the 29-year-old American’s career and his Rally team this season. Tuesday’s stage 3 is an 11 mile team time-trial that suits Van Aert and Jumbo Visma.

Tour of Britain 2022 Route stage 2: Harwick - Duns

The race begins on a false flat section of 10 kilometres. Which sets the tone. The riders traverse a lot of undulating terrain on the road from Harwick to Duns.

The gradients on the three climbs in the finale – Wanside Rigg (2.1 kilometres at 5.7%), Mainslaughter Law (1.7 kilometres at 5.9%), Hardens Hill (1.9 kilometres at 4.7%) -, will be challenging for the pure sprinters. A decimated peloton is expected to battle it out for the stage win. Or an attacker is to snatch the victory.

Hardens Hill peaks out with 5.4 kilometres remaining. A 4 kilometres downhill leads onto a flat final section.

When is the Tour de France 2024? How to watch and the latest odds with Tadej Pogacar the bookies' favourite

W ith five weeks to go until the 2024 Tour de France , Tadej Pogacar is the bookies’ favourite to win the yellow jersey — having won the Giro d’Italia emphatically.

The Slovenian is looking to add to his 2020 and 2021 Tour titles, which will be easier if rival Jonas Vingegaard fails to recover from crash injuries sustained in the Itzulia Basque Country tour earlier this year.

Danish rider Vingegaard, the 2022 and 2023 Tour winner, is facing a race against time to be fit and is not on the start list for next week's Critérium du Dauphiné — a warm-up race.

Other yellow jersey contenders Remco Evenepoel and Primož Roglič, who also both crashed on the Basque tour, have recovered to make the Critérium .

It could make for an interesting 111th edition of the race with or without its biggest names when the racing gets under way next month.

Here is all you need to know about the 2024 Tour de France.

When is the Tour de France 2024?

The Tour will begin with a hilly stage from Florence to Rimini in Italy on Saturday, June 29.

From there, riders will race for 21 days and have two rest days, culminating in a time trial in Nice on Sunday, July 21.

What is the route for the Tour?

After the four days in Italy, the Tour will cross the border to Valloire France on Tuesday, July 2 — the first high mountain stage.

It is the first time the race has had its Grand Depart in Italy. In another first, the riders will cross into San Marino on an early stage.

The Tour will finish outside Paris for the first time as the French capital is preparing to host the Olympic Games and the Paralympics this summer.

The final stage in Nice will be a time trial, meaning the general classification order will go down to the last day.

While usually the last day is something of a ceremony before a sprint, in 2024 it will be the second of two long time trials.

The tough route will take in summit finishes in the French Alps, featured earlier than usual, Massif Central and the Pyrenees. Stage nine will also feature 32 kilometres (20 miles) of gravel roads.

The severity of the stages and lack of flat finishes is bad news for sprinters including Britain's Mark Cavendish — who is seeking a record-breaking 35th Tour stage win.

Eight stages identified as ‘flat’ could give sprinters such as Cavendish reasons to hope — but only if they can stay in the race over the mountains and make time cuts.

The Manx rider told the Guardian : “There’s a few [sprint stages] but you’ve got to get to them — that’s the problem.

“It’s so hard. I’m in a bit of shock, actually.”

How can I watch the Tour de France?

ITV 4 and ITV X will be showing the Tour de France live from June 29 to July 21 with highlights shows every evening — usually at 7pm.

In previous years, the shows have been presented by Gary Imlach with input and commentary from David Millar and Ned Boulting.

ITV will also broadcast Critérium du Dauphiné highlights from June 4 to 11.

Who are the bookmakers’ favourites for the 2024 Tour de France?

Bookmakers are in an unusual position and taking bets on a race scenario with and without defending champion Jonas Vingegaard taking part.

Oddschecker does not have the option of betting on the Dane winning the yellow jersey.

However, the odds of other contenders do shorten if he does not make the start line.

The full list of riders will be confirmed nearer the start of the race.

These are the Oddschecker odds as of May 30 .

Tadej Pogacar: Odds to win with Vingegaard in race (4/11) without Vingegaard (1/2)

The Slovenian is in red-hot form and could add to his two yellow jerseys.

Primož Roglič: Both with and without Vingegaard (9/2)

Another Slovenian who has won the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana in the past but never the Tour de France, despite coming second in 2020.

Remco Evenepoel: With and without Vingegaard (10/1)

The Belgian has previously won the Giro and is an all-rounder.

Juan Ayuso: With and without Vingegaard (16/1)

The Spanish youngster is a teammate of Pogacar at UAE Team Emirates and could step up should misfortune strike the Slovenian but is otherwise on domestique duty.

Tour of Norway: Axel Laurance tops Ethan Hayter to win stage 2

Alpecin-Deceuninck rider takes race lead off Thibau Nys

Axel Laurance

How it unfolded

Axel Laurance (Alpecin-Deceuninck) secured the stage 2 victory at the Tour of Norway, sprinting over the line from a front group that emerged on the final climb to Gullingen.

Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) was part of a chase group that managed to close the gap to the front group in the final, and he finished in second place, ahead of runner-up Bart Lemmen (Visma-Lease a Bike).

Laurance moved into the overall race lead as stage 1 winner, and overnight leader Thibau Nys (Lidl-Trek) struggled to hold the pace on the final ascent. Laurance now leads the race by 12 seconds over Lemmen and 13 seconds ahead of Ådne Holter (Uno-X Mobility).

The second stage at the Tour of Norway was a 204.8km race that started in Odda and finished on the summit in Gullingen.

The breakaway emerged after the first 40km of racing that included Sean Flynn (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), Filip Řeha (ATT Investments), Hugo Scala Jr (Project Echelon Racing), and Anton Stensby (Team Coop-Repsol).

The quartet extended their lead to over three minutes at the halfway mark of the race, which included the Hogganvikbakken climb and the roads to Gullingen.

Lidl-Trek set the pace from behind the peloton for their overall race leader, Thibau Nys. ATT Investments also contributed to the efforts to keep the breakaway in check.

Wout Van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) was involved in a crash in the peloton with 45km to go, but the Belgian was quickly back on his bike and in the race a kilometre later.

Up in the breakaway, Scala was distanced from the move with 37km out, leaving Stensby, Řeha and Flynn to continue forward as the gap fell to two minutes.

Stensby surged into the base for the final ascent, distancing Řeha and Flynn and holding onto a slim 20 seconds on the chasing field, but he, too, was caught on the lower slopes.

Nys showed signs of struggle on the upper slopes of the climb as a small group of riders surged ahead. Axel Laurance (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Ben Zwiehoff (Bora-hansgrohe), Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek), Bart Lemmen (Visma-Lease a Bike), Carl Fredrik Hagen (Q36.5 Pro Cycling), Marco Brenner (Tudor Pro Cycling) and Ådne Holter (Uno-X Mobility).

Inside the final kilometre, the front group swelled to 11 riders, including Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers).

Laurance started his sprint from the front group and claimed the win, narrowly holding off the rest of the field, with Hayter finishing in second place and Lemmen holding on for third.
