What to expect at Tour of Flanders

The Tour of Flanders marks the second monument of the season, and the first to take place in the cycling heartland of Belgium.

Now in its 107th edition, the event is one of the oldest on the calendar, and always makes for thrilling racing.

This year, the men's race will begin in Bruges, where the riders will roll out on a 270km route, punctuated by challenging cobbled climbs, en route to the finish in Oudenaarde. The women's peloton will tackle the same series of hellingen , but on a shorter course of 158km, starting and ending in Oudenaarde.

As is customary at the Tour of Flanders, the finale will likely play out on the iconic climbs of the Oude Kwaremont and the Paterberg. These two ascents, which both come in the final 20 kilometres, have long been the launchpad of choice for the ultimate race winners.

Should Mathieu van der Poel defend his title in this year's men's event, the Dutchman will join an exclusive group of riders who have won the race three times, joining the likes of Tom Boonen, Fabian Cancellara and Johan Museeuw.

The women's race, first held in 2004, has crowned an array of different champions, with Annemiek van Vleuten one of just three riders to have triumphed on two occasions.

Tour of Flanders Essentials: Favorites, Maps, Profiles, Course Changes, TV Listings, Start Lists, and More

World champions lotte kopecky and mathieu van der poel headline the belgian monument with some key route alterations: 'the kortekeer and the kanarieberg will not be included in the course this year.'.

The Tour of Flanders brings the northern monuments to warp speed Sunday with arguably the greatest one-day race of the season.

Mathieu van der Poel and Lotte Kopecky line up in the rainbow bands as the five-star favorites in what will set the tone for two spectacular races.

Perhaps only Paris-Roubaix can surpass De Ronde for pure racing action, ultra-prestige, and high-level competition.

This year’s editions saw some late-hour drama, especially on the men’s side, with Wout van Aert set to miss the big date. On the women’s side, the unfolding contract talks about the future of Demi Vollering could play out on the roads this weekend.

Date : Sunday, March 31, 2024 Editions: 108th men, 21st women Start : Antwerp (men), Oudenaarde (women) Finish : Oudenaarde, both races Distance : 270.8km (men), 163km (women) Weather : 7C for start, 17C for finish. Slight chance of showers in morning, otherwise mostly cloudy. Easterly, southeasterly winds, 7 to 19km/h, with gusts up to 40km/h. Defending champions : Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime)

The Tour of Flanders women's race finishes after the men's

TV listings: Plenty of options

USA : FloBikes will livestream the Tour of Flanders via its app for paid subscribers. Coverage starts for the men’s race at 03h55 EST and the women’s race at 09h00 EST.

Europe : Eurosport and Discovery+ will broadcast De Ronde via its app for paid subscribers. Some European nations will also pick up the broadcast, including RTBF, NOS, and RAI, and others.

Australia : SBS will be covering both the women’s and men’s races. Check local listings for times.

Favorites men’s race: No Wout, no Pogačar

Two big names are missing, and their collective absences will mark the outcome of the race.

Van Aert crashed so heavily at Wednesday’s Dwars door Vlaanderen that the Belgian superstar saw his entire spring campaign, including Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, and Amstel Gold, over in an instant.

Other injuries and illness on the super squad could see Matteo Jorgenson, already on a hot streak this spring, emerging as the leader at Visma-Lease a Bike.

The other missing star is defending champion Tadej Pogačar, who is bypassing Flanders altogether. After ripping across the Volta a Catalunya , he races next at Liège-Bastogne-Liège before heading to the Giro d’Italia.

That puts Van der Poel, already on a tear so far in 2024, firmly in the driver’s seat as the five-star favorite.

The reigning world champion can also match a record. A third win would put him on the same number of wins as Buysse, Magni, Leman, Museeuw, Boonen, and Cancellara.

Right behind him will be banged up Mads Pedersen. The big Dane also crashed Wednesday, but wasn’t nearly as bad as his teammate Jasper Stuyven, who’s out with a broke clavicle.

Other big names include Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ), Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious), Alberto Bettiol (EF Education – EasyPost), Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates), Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X Mobility), and Matteo Trentin (Tudor Pro Cycling Team).

Who will win? Without Van Aert or Pogačar to complicate things, Van der Poel is the odds-on favorite.

Favorites women’s race: SD Worx the favorites

Lotte Kopecky

Lotte Kopecky currently shares the record of most wins in Flanders’ Finest with Mirjam Melchers-Van Poppel, Judith Arndt, and Annemiek van Vleuten

Joining Kopecky in Team SD Worx-Protime in Oudenaarde will be Marlen Reusser, Demi Vollering, and Lorena Wiebes, by far the deepest and strongest team in the race.

Lidl-Trek will be banging on the door, with Elisa Longo Borghini, Elisa Balsamo, Lizzie Deignan and Shirin Van Anrooij.

Marianne Vos is hot off a win at Dwars, with Canyon/SRAM Racing lining up with Katia Niewiadoma and Chloé Dygert bringing on the heat .

Kopecky has nearly been perfect so far this spring, and will be hard to beat.

A few key course changes for safety

There are a few significant changes for both courses.

After starting in Bruges last year, Antwerp will host the rollout Sunday, and the bunch will plow south straight toward the Flemish Ardennes. The finish of both races remains on the Minderbroedersstraat in Oudenaarde.

The modern classic finales of the Paterberg-Oude Kwaremont combo remains unchanged for both the men’s and women’s races, but there are a few tweaks for safety reasons, with wider and faster roads.

“The changes in the first 100 km are safety-related choices. We have been looking even further for wide roads so that the peloton has more space in which to build up speed,” said race director Scott Sunderland. “The edition from Bruges, where we carried out a similar exercise for the opening hours of the race, showed how these wide roads led to high averages in the opening hours. That speed ultimately helped to determine the shape of the race and the strategic choices of the teams.”

As everyone saw with the tragic consequences in the men’s Dwars door Vlaanderen , the Kanarieberg and Kortekeer have been removed from the route.

“On the way to Kortekeer, the speed is high and the pressure within the peloton is very high,” Sunderland said. “But then we have also seen in the past two years that a few teams decide to quietly ride up the Kortekeer. The question then is: why should we want such a narrow climb on the course so early in the race? Isn’t it better to take out the Kortekeer and keep the race open?”

WOUT VAN AERT crashes

The organization also took out the Kanarieberg and the high-speed approach that provoked the horrific crash Wednesday that took down Van Aert and a host of others.

“There is a direction along which we have to go to the Kanarieberg. That goes downhill and the peloton reaches a speed of 90 km/h. Whereupon the road narrows from three lanes to one,” he said. “When you talk about safety, you have to look at it seriously.

“We have analyzed the editions of recent years. We looked at whether someone who attacked on the Kanarieberg or the Kortekeer ever stayed ahead. So no one.”

The race really starts to kick off at the Koppenberg, about 45km from the finish.

Unlike in previous years, the men and women will be taking the same route to the Bult van Melden this year.

“We have opted to change the approach for the men and to make it the same as the one for the women,” Sunderland said. “A choice for equality, but above all for reasons of safety. To be specific, this change means that after the first climb of the Paterberg, the riders will cycle on roads where it is easier to keep track of things. We are making the approach to the Koppenberg more straightforward and are taking out the descent and sharp bend just before the climb.”

With this change, the cars in the women’s race can follow the same detour as for the men’s race and team leaders can assist their riders all the way to the foot of the Koppenberg. With this change, the organization is eliminating a few points where the race had threatened to stall in recent years, something that caused a race stoppage in Wednesday’s Dwars race for the women.

“These situations were becoming too dangerous,” Sunderland said. “Safety is our highest priority. Furthermore, we also want to adapt our course to the way in which the peloton races. We want to anticipate and continue to develop the Tour to better serve the riders. And that is what we are doing with this change, but it does mean that both the Kortekeer and the Kanarieberg will not be included in the course this year. But we are adding the Kapelleberg.”

Americans in Flanders: A rare presence

Coryn Labecki

Here’s a good trivia question for your next group ride: name the only U.S. rider to win the Tour of Flanders.

The answer is only one: Coryn Labecki in 2017, when she out-kicked Gracie Elvin and Chantal Van den Broek-Blaak in a reduced bunch sprint with Team DSM.

Kristin Armstrong was twice second (2008 and 2012) as the only other U.S. women to hit the prestigious podium.

On the men’s side, no American has ever won De Ronde, and George Hincapie finished third in the 2006 edition as the only U.S. men’s podium in race history.

Expected U.S. starters Sunday include Chloé Dygert (Canyon-SRAM), Ruth Edwards and Lily Williams (Human Powered Health), Labecki and Kristin Faulkner (EF Education-Cannondale), and Heidi Franz (Lifeplus Wahoo).

Men’s starters Sunday include Dwars door Vlaanderen winner Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike), Magnus Sheffield (Ineos Grenadiers), and Riley Sheehan (Israel Premier Tech). Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), fifth last year in a breakout ride, is sidelined with injury .

Can one of them break through?

It's safe to say that for Belgian cycling fans the Tour of Flanders is bigger than Christmas — way bigger. The climax to the Flemish cycling 'holy week' and the second cycling Monument of 2024 will see the worlds best Classics riders cover an epic 271 kilometers between Antwerp and Oudenaarde, taking in no less than 17 brutal cobbled climbs.

Read on and we'll show you how to watch Tour of Flanders 2024 live streams from anywhere with a VPN , and potentially for FREE .

Tour of Flanders 2024 live streams take place on Sunday, March 31. ►  Start time: 4.00 a.m. ET / 1.00 a.m. PT / 9.00 a.m. BST / 7.00 p.m. AEDT • FREE STREAMS — SBS (Aus) / Sporza (Bel) / Rai (Italy)  •   U.S. — FloBikes •   U.K. — Discovery+ • Watch anywhere — Try NordVPN

The build up is over and it’s time for the big one, the ‘Ronde van Vlaanderen’. The hype has been growing since opening weekend in late February and has now reached fever pitch with the whole of Belgium buzzing in anticipation.

Leaving Antwerp, the first half of the race is predominantly flat. Then, after 136 kilometers, the route arrives at the first of three ascents of the Oude Kwaremont and from here on it's brutal. The climbs and cobbled sectors come in rapid succession, each one hitting the riders hard and testing their strength and skill to the absolute limit.

The Koppenberg, the Mariaborrestraat, Steenbeekdries and Stationsberg will lead the riders to the climbs of the Taaienberg and Oude Kruisberg before hitting the Oude Kwaremont for a second time. Then the final combination of the Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg coming just 13 kilometers from the finish line is where the killer blows will almost certainly be dealt.

Last year’s winner Tadej Pogačar has decided to skip the race this year so the role of favorite passes over to Mathieu van der Poel who is in scintillating form having destroyed the field to win the E3 Saxo classic and also take second behind Mads Pederson at Gent Wevelgem. It’s Pederson who will lead the challenge against Van der Poel.

The peloton rolled out under clear skies with everyone wondering just how they can stop Van de Poel winning his third edition to equal the record of three victories.

Read on to see how to catch the action from wherever you live.

2024 Tour of Flanders riders to watch

Men's race - 2024 riders to watch.

A mass crash during the Dwars door Vlaanderen on Wednesday ruled out some of his biggest contenders, including Wout van Aert, who suffered fractured collarbone and ribs. Defending champion Tadej Pogacar decided to skip the Ronde this year to focus on the preparation of the Giro d'Italia. The big names who will be competing are:

  • Mathieu van der Poel (NED/Alpecin Deceuninck): The two-time winner (2020, 2022) is considered the undisputed favourite after dominating the E3 Saxo Classic and finishing second at last week's Gent-Wevelgem, and with archrival van Aert not competing.
  • Matteo Jorgenson (USA/Team Visma | Lease a Bike): The American rider is expected to lead his team following his win at the Dwars door Vlaanderen and the injuries carried by both Tiesji Benoot and Jan Tratnik. This season he also claimed the general classification at the Paris-Nice.
  • Alberto Bettiol: The Italian is a former winner of the Ronde and, despite suffering from cramps at the recent Dwars door Vlaanderen, has demonstrated a good form by winning the Milano-Torino and finishing fifth at the Milan-San Remo.

Women's race - 2024 riders to watch

  • Lotte Kopecky (BEL/SD Worx-Protime): The Belgian superstar and reigning world champion is aiming for a third consecutive Flanders title after her convincing victories at Strade Bianche and Nokere Koerse so far this spring.
  • Demi Vollering (NED/SD Worx-Protime): The Tour de France Femmes reigning champion, who finished third at Strade Bianche, is ready to step up as a leader if Kopecky finds herself in difficulty.
  • Elisa Balsamo (ITA/Lidl-Trek): Italy's 2021 road world champion has impressed this season, showing that she can both climb and sprint by winning the Trofeo Alfredo Binda and the Brugge-De Panne.

The men's race follows a scenic 271-kilometer route between Antwerp and Oudenaarde that features 17 calf-shredding climbs.

The women's race meanwhile includes 12 bergs, culminating with the grueling double whammy of Kwaremont and Paterberg's ascents.

Highly fancied contender Wout van Aert misses the men's race after sustaining injuries in a pile-up during Wednesday's Dwars door Vlaanderen, while last year's champ Tadej Pogacar has opted to skip the Ronde this year to focus on his preparations for the upcoming Giro d'Italia., leaving Mathieu van der Poel as the clear prerace favorite.

The women's race could meanwhile see reigning world champion Lotte Kopecky aiming to win her third consecutive Flanders title.

Below, we'll outline the best  live TV streaming services  to use to watch the Tour of Flanders live wherever you are in the world.

Tour of Flanders 2024: Where and when is it?

The 2024 Tour of Flanders takes place on Saturday, March 30. The Men's race starts at 10 a.m. CEST local time in Belgium, which is 9 a.m. GMT in the UK, 5 a.m. ET or 2 a.m. PT in the US and 8 p.m. AEDT in Australia .

The women's race follows a little later at 1:25 p.m. CEST (2:25 p.m. GMT in the UK, 10:25 a.m. ET /7:25 a.m. PT in the US and 1:25 a.m. AEDT in Australia in the early hours of Sunday morning).

How to watch the Tour of Flanders 2024 online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the race locally, you may need a different way to watch -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic, and it's also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to what you want to watch. If your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, non-blackout area. Most VPNs, like our  Editors' Choice, ExpressVPN , make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you're streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Quick tips for streaming Tour of Flanders 2024 using a VPN

  • With four variables at play -- your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN -- your experience and success when streaming the Tour of Flanders live may vary.
  • If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option.
  • If you're having trouble after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend  Brave .

Live streams

Classics schedule & broadcasters.

The 2020 cobbled Classics season will reach its peak on Sunday with the Tour of Flanders men's and Women's WorldTour races taking place mostly behind closed doors because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The best way to watch the race while staying clear of COVID-19 is to follow it online or on television, and what better place than right here on Cyclingnews ?

We'll bring you full live coverage, reports, results, news, interviews and analysis throughout the races. Read on to find out how to watch the finale to the 2020 Classics season via live stream, no matter your location, with  ExpressVPN .

2020 Tour of Flanders 2020 Tour of Flanders Women 10 riders to watch at the men's Tour of Flanders

The Tour of Flanders marks the apex of the late-season Classics campaign with the women's and men's Driedaagse De Panne a denouement on the Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, following the Ronde. It's the last chances for one-day race glory in this odd, upside-down season.

There will be no crowds packed along the cobbled climbs in Flanders – no bodies pressing against barriers shouting the riders up the Oude Kwaremont or Paterberg – but the race action is sure to be heated in particular between the two main favourites, Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix).

The duo have been rivals in cyclo-cross since their junior days and, with each having their own major successes on the road, have created a steady thrum of drama in the build-up to Sunday after they marked each other out of contention at Gent-Wevelgem .

Should the same happen on the circuits around Oudenaarde, there are plenty of riders keen to take advantage, in particular new world champion Julian Alaphilippe ( Elegant-Quickstep ), defending champion Alberto Bettiol (EF Pro Cycling), Matteo Trentin (CCC Team) and Gent-Wevelgem winner Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo).

The men face a lonely 244km from Antwerp to Oudenaarde, with empty stands on the 14 cobbled sectors and climbs.

On the women's side, the race pickings have been so slim this season that riders are sure to be pushing all their chips in to nab a victory in this WorldTour race. Series leader Lizzie Deignan, a winner in the race in 2016, will have a strong team at her service, including Ellen van Dijk and Elisa Longo Borghini.

The women's race is 135km long, starting and ending in Oudenaarde with nine cobbled sectors and climbs of the Katteberg, Edelare, Leberg, Berendries, Valkenberg, Kanarieberg, Taaienberg and Kruisberg before the finale.

With just one trip over the Kwaremont and Paterberg before a flat run-in, the women's race often comes down to a small bunch sprint, as in last year's race where Marta Bastianelli (Alé Cipollini) won. Her team is in doubt after a coronavirus positive, however. Look for world champion Anna van der Breggen (Boels Dolmans) – the 2018 winner – as well as Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott) and Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) to be at the head of the race in Oudenaarde.

Check below for all the details of how to watch all the action from Flanders.

Follow Cyclingnews on Twitter , Facebook and Instagram for alerts on important stories and action during the Tour of Flanders. Meanwhile, ExpressVPN can help you watch the Tour of Flanders, no matter your location.

The races are being aired live across Europe via Eurosport and on the Eurosport Player, with British Eurosport having been showing almost every Classic live.

You can  sign up for a subscription  to Eurosport Player for £6.99 for a month, £4.99 for a year-long monthly pass, or £39.99 for a 12-month pass. GCN Racing has also been showing select races, though only via app.

In North America, both Fubo.tv and FloBikes are airing the Tour of Flanders men and women's races.

Subscribing to FloBikes cost $150 for the year and gives you access to watch most of the season's biggest races. Fubo.tv, meanwhile is available for a week's free trial, while their most popular package costs $54.99 per month for over 75 channels.

In Australia, SBS will show the Tour of Flanders.

As you might expect, local broadcasters such as Sporza , RTBF , France TV and NOS.nl are showing the bulk of the spring Classics live. Feeds will be geo-restricted, mind.

Check below for a full list of races and broadcasters airing them

If you live outside a broadcast zone or are on holiday outside your country and find that the live streams to be geo-restricted, you can get around this by getting access to them by simulating being back in your home country via a 'virtual private network', or VPN, for your laptop, tablet or mobile.

TechRadar tested hundreds of VPNs and recommends the number-one VPN currently available as Express VPN. With  ExpressVPN , you can watch on many devices at once including Smart TVs, Fire TV Stick, PC, Mac, iPhone, Android phone, iPads, tablets, etc.

Defending women's race winner, Annemiek van Vleuten, will have to see off a tough field to hang onto her crown too. How to Watch All the Biggest Pro Cycling Races of 2024

Here’s a look at the pro road races we can’t wait to watch in 2024—plus where to stream all the action.

110th tour de france 2023 stage 21

Milan-San Remo—March 16

Tour of flanders—march 31, paris-roubaix—april 6 and 7, itzulia basque country—april 1 to 6, la vuelta femenina—april 29 to may 5, giro d’italia—may 4 to 26, giro d’italia donne—july 7 to 14, tour de france—june 29 to july 21, olympic road races—august 3 and 4, tour de france femmes—august 12 to 18, vuelta a españa—august 17 to september 8, world road race championships—september 28 and 29.

Believe it or not, the 2024 pro road season is already underway, with the women’s and men’s Tour Down Under kicking things off in Australia this month. As the first races on the men’s and women’s WorldTour calendars, these are important events–and the riders taking part are certainly doing their best to get the season off to an exciting start.

Here are thirteen that we’ve already got marked in our calendars–and what streaming services you’ll need to enjoy them from home.

eroica 17th strade bianche 2023 men's elite

Strade Bianche—March 2

Taking place on the white gravel roads of Tuscany, Strade Bianche is easily one of the hardest and most beautiful events of the year–and a race in which the strongest rider always wins. So it makes sense that the event’s list of winners reads like a “Who’s Who” of the sport’s best racers.

For example, Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) won the men’s race in 2022 with a solo attack 50 kilometers from the finish line in Siena, an incredibly gutsy move that only a rider like Pogačar could attempt (and pull off).

Last year, Great Britain’s Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers) added his name to the event’s impressive roll of honor with a daring ride of his own after catching the breakaway with about 40km to go, attacking on his own with about 20km to go, and then using his cyclocross and mountain bike skills (gravel descents can be treacherous) to stay away and win the race by himself. And while Pidcock won’t be back to defend his title this year, Pogačar will be taking the start (it’s his first race of the season), making the Slovenian the top favorite.

The women’s race always produces fireworks of its own. Last year, Kopecky (who won the race in 2022) and her teammate, the Netherlands’ Demi Vollering, hit the finish line (in Siena’s historic Piazza del Campo) together after working to catch and overtake the lone leader, American Kristen Faulkner (Team Jayco-AlUla).

But instead of crossing the line hand-in-hand, Vollering out-sprinted Kopecky with a well-timed bike throw to take the win. This was an uncomfortable outcome (at first), as it was unclear as to whether or not the riders were “supposed” to be sprinting against one another with such intensity. (Frankly, we loved it.)

This year, Kopecky and Vollering will look to make it four in a row for SD Worx (the Netherlands’ Chantal van den Broek-Blaak won the race for the team in 2021). We’ll be rooting for Poland’s Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM Racing), a four-time podium finisher who’s still searching for the top step.

While they haven’t released their calendar yet, we’re assuming (and hoping) that this race–and other major Italian events–will be included with the new B/R Sports add-on package that’s available to Max subscribers (essentially replacing GCN+). So stay tuned–we’ll announce more details when we have them.

topshot cycling ita milan sanremo

At almost 300km, Milan-San Remo is the longest one-day race on the calendar. And thanks to the fact that the outcome is almost always decided in the final 10km, the riders say it’s the easiest of cycling’s five Monuments to finish, but the hardest to win.

We love Milan-San Remo’s slow build to the finish as the riders head south from Milan toward the coast, then wind their way along the sea toward the cluster of climbs that host the Monument’s traditional finale. The day’s final and most famous ascent is the Poggio, a short, punchy ascent just a few kilometers from the finish line with a descent that often creates more gaps than the climb itself.

Case in point: Last year Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) attacked over the top of the climb and used the descent to lengthen his lead over an elite group of chasers. The Dutchman held on to take his first win in the season’s opening Monument.

And while there’s no women’s Milan-San Remo, the Trofeo Alfredo Binda, a major stop on the women’s WorldTour and a pillar of the former women’s World Cup series, takes place the next day–and (we assume) will be streamed live via Max.

Last year, the Netherland’s Shirin van Anrooij (Trek-Segafredo) brought Trek’s winning streak to three, escaping to win the race alone, 23 seconds ahead of her teammate–and the defending champion–Elisa Balsamo. One of the brightest young riders in the sport, the win announced van Anrooij as a future Classics superstar. And the 21-year-old promptly lived up to the hype, scoring top-10 finishes in Dwars door Vlaanderen, the Tour of Flanders, the Brabantse Pijl, and the Amstel Gold Race.

20th ronde van vlaanderen tour des flandres 2023 women's elite

Many riders consider the Tour of Flanders (known locally as the “Ronde van Vlaanderen”) to be the hardest one-day race on the calendar. The women’s and men’s events cover over 150km and 250km of the toughest terrain in the Flemish region of Belgium including tight, technical roads, cobblestones, and short, steep climbs called “bergs.” The course is so challenging that it can take years for riders to master the nuances of the race enough to contend to win it.

Last year’s men’s race went to Pogačar, who won the race alone after dropping everyone on the third and final ascent of the Oude Kwaremont. Van der Poel finished second, and has now finished first or second in each of the last four editions.

Pogačar won’t be back to defend his title this year, which means van der Poel has a shot to tie the record for the most wins in race history. But we’ll be rooting for Belgium’s Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike), who’s completely overhauled his early-season program (he’s racing less and spending more time at high-altitude training camps) so as to be at his absolute best for his nation’s most important event.

The women’s event should once again be SD Worx’s race to lose: the Dutch team has won three of the last four editions, with Kopecky taking back-to-back victories in 2022 and 2023. It’s always a team effort though: last year Vollering joined Kopecky on the podium in second and in 2022 van den Broek-Blaak took third. Lidl-Trek, with van Anroij and Italy’s Eliza Longo Borghini (who finished third last year and won the race on 2015), should be the Dutch squad’s biggest challengers.

When it comes to streaming this and many of the Flemish Classics, you’ll need a $150 annual subscription to FloBikes, the only legal way to stream them in the USA. If you’re a diehard fan who doesn’t want to deal with pesky VPNs, it’s the most reliable method, but it comes at a significant cost and doesn’t offer much in terms of other events that can’t be streamed through other services.

cycling france 2023 paris roubaix women

The “Hell of the North.” The “Queen of the Classics.” Whatever you call it, the men’s and women’s editions of Paris-Roubaix are probably our favorite one-day races on the calendar. Famous for covering 30km and 55km of some of Northern France’s worst cobbled farm roads, they’re loaded with drama and always produce worthy champions.

The weekend begins with Saturday’s fourth edition of Paris-Roubaix Femmes (145km), which–if it sticks to last year’s course–should start in Denain and include the final 17 or so sectors of cobbles (called “pavé”) from Sunday’s men’s race—all the way to the finish line in the Roubaix velodrome, where Canada’s Alison Jackson (EF Education-Cannondale) shocked the world by outsprinting her breakaway companions to take a surprise win in last year’s edition. Surprisingly, this is the only spring Classic that SD Worx hasn’t won yet, so they’ll be super-aggressive after missing out in the first three editions.

In last year’s men’s race, van der Poel followed up his win in Milan-Sanremo and his second-place finish in the Tour of Flanders with a victory in Paris-Roubaix, a race seemingly made for the 5-time world cyclocross champion. The Dutchman followed an attack by van Aert on one of the race’s final cobbled sectors (a famous stretch called the Carrefour de l’Arbe) and then surged ahead on his own after the Belgian flatted.

Expect the two of them to renew their rivalry this year, with van Aert doing everything he can to end his spring with a victory in the French Monument (especially if he comes up short at Flanders the week before).

2nd itzulia basque country stage 6

Once known as the Tour of the Basque Country, the 6-day Itzulia Basque Country is one of the hardest stage races on the calendar. Raced through the steep, punchy hills in the Basque region of northern Spain, each road stage (one stage is usually an individual time trial) is raced like a mini-Classic. And the overall winner is usually a grand tour contender who’s using the event to build form for the Giro d’Italia or the Tour de France.

The racing here is always exciting, but this year’s edition offers an even better reason to watch: it is expected to be the first race of the season in which former Jumbo-Visma teammates Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Primož Roglič (who’s now riding for BORA-hansgrohe after a respectful divorce from the Dutch super team) will go head-to-head against one another as rivals.

Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick-Step) is likely to be racing as well, meaning three of the four contenders for this year’s Tour de France will be in action together–the only time that’s expected to happen before the Tour de France itself.

9th la vuelta femenina 2023 stage 7

For the past 8 years, the organizers of the men’s Vuelta a España have organized a women’s event. Originally starting as a one-day race run alongside the last stage of the men’s grand tour, the event grew to consist of four days of racing. But that’s hardly a grand tour, isn’t it?

Enter last year’s new and improved La Vuelta Feminina which in addition to being expanded to seven stages, moved from September to its own spot on the calendar–away from the men’s event that often overshadowed it.

Annemiek Van Vleuten (Movistar) won last year’s new and improved edition, but somewhat controversially. On Stage 6, the Dutch star and her team attacked the front of the race just as Vollering, who had entered the day as the overall leader, stopped to take a “nature break” off the back of the peloton. Thanks to strong crosswinds that split the race apart, Vollering and her SD Worx teammates were unable to bring back Van Vleuten, so Vollering’s chances to win the race went up the road as well.

This year’s course has yet to be unveiled, but one thing is certain: Van Vleuten–who became the first woman in history to win all three of the sport’s grand tours–has since retired, making Vollering the top favorite to take the title for herself this year.

106th giro d'italia 2023 stage 21

While the Tour de France gets all the prestige, riders generally consider the Giro d’Italia to be much, much harder.

This year’s race begins in the Piedmont region and–aside from a brief trip into Switzerland–stays within Italy for each of its 21 stages. Always characterized by its mountains, the 2024 Giro d’Italia boasts five high mountain stages and four summit finishes, including a trip over the infamous Stelvio, the tallest climb in this year’s race.

The Giro will also feature two individual time trials, which is perhaps why Tadej Pogačar has made the Italian grand tour one of his goals. This will be the Slovenian’s first time competing in the Italian grand tour, and he’s easily the top favorite.

This year will also mark the first Giro appearance for Wout van Aert, who says he’s not targeting the General Classification. But given the fact that he’s not racing the Tour de France this summer, we can’t help but wonder if he’ll shoot for a top-10 or top-5 finish overall.

34th giro d'italia donne 2023 stage 4

Before the arrival of the Tour de France Femmes a few years ago, the Giro d’Italia Donne was the most prestigious women’s stage race on the calendar. But it was plagued by sketchy organization, and in some years seemed to be teetering on the edge of collapse.

But now the event is organized by the same group that organizes the men’s Giro which means better support, more stability and–hopefully–improved TV coverage.

The race begins with a short time trial in Brescia, then works its way south, with two flat stages for sprinters, three punchy stages for breakaway and classics riders, and two mountain stages on the final weekend, including a Stage 6 summit finish on the Blockhaus, one of the Giro’s most famous climbs.

Van Vleuten won last year’s edition by almost four minutes, taking her fourth victory in the Italian grand tour. This year–with the Tour de France Femmes taking place a few weeks later than it usually does–we wonder if Demi Vollering will make the race a target, perhaps in an attempt to win all three women’s grand tours in one season.

110th tour de france 2023 stage 21

The 2024 Tour de France should be one of the most exciting editions in decades, with an Italian start, a route filled with mountains, and a non-traditional finish in Nice instead of Paris.

The race begins in Florence with the first of three Italian stages and is then followed by an early trip through the Alps (Stage 4) that should sort the General Classification just a couple of days into the Tour’s first week. This will also be the first men’s Tour to feature a gravel stage, with Stage 9 covering 32km of gravel roads through the Champagne vineyards around Troyes before the Tour’s first Rest Day.

The second week brings the race through the rugged Massif Central and into the Pyrenees, where the week ends with back-to-back summit finishes including the Tour’s return to Plateau de Beille, one of the toughest ascents in the Pyrenees.

The Tour’s final week takes a southerly route back to the Alps and a final showdown in and around Nice that concludes with an individual time trial–35 years after American Greg Lemond overtook France’s Laurent Fignon to win the 1989 Tour in a time trial on the Tour’s final stage. This is a big change: the Tour usually ends in Paris, but with the Olympics set to begin in the City of Lights on July 26th, the Tour needs to finish elsewhere so as to avoid any logistical conflicts.

Vingegaard, the two-time defending champion, will be back to try and score a hat trick, but he’ll face the toughest list of challengers he’s ever seen including Pogačar, who’s hoping to win the Giro-Tour double; Evenepoel, who’s riding his first Tour de France; and Roglič, his former teammate and now newest rival. With a difficult course and a star-studded startlist, this could be a Tour for the ages.

Taking place about two weeks after the conclusion of the Tour de France–and one before the start of the Tour de France Femmes–gold medals will be awarded in the men’s and women’s road races at the Olympics in Paris.

Covering 278km and 158km, respectively, both the men’s and women’s races are expected to favor the sport’s Classics stars, with lots of short, punchy climbs and a finishing circuit through downtown Paris that takes the riders up the cobbled Côté de la Butte Montmartre three times. So it comes as no surprise that riders like Mathieu van der Poel, Tadej Pogačar, Wout van Aert, Lotte Kopecky, and Demi Vollering have the Olympics written in nice big capital letters on their calendars.

If you watched last year’s world championships in Glasgow last August, you’ve seen what a challenging urban circuit can do to a peloton, and with smaller teams (countries can start 1-4 riders depending on their nation’s UCI ranking), fewer riders overall (just 90 in each event), and no race radios (so riders will get less information and direction from their team cars), we’re expecting aggressive, dramatic outcomes.

1st tour de france femmes 2022 stage 1

The first two editions of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift started on the last day of the men’s Tour de France. But with the Olympics coming closely on the heels of the men’s Tour, this year’s third edition of the incredibly popular Tour de France Femmes was pushed back a few weeks–which is great because it means the race doesn’t have to share the spotlight with the world’s largest sporting event.

In addition to changing its place on the calendar, more than half of this year’s Tour de France Femmes will take place outside of France with three stages taking place in and around Rotterdam (including two stages in one day on Tuesday, August 13), a transitional stage that takes the race from Valkenburg to Liège on Stage 5, and a stage starting in Bastogne (Stage 5) before finally bringing the riders across the border and into France.

But just like the first two editions, it’s the final weekend that packs the biggest punch, with two days in the Alps with back-to-back summit finishes including a finish atop Alpe d’Huez–arguably the most famous climb in professional cycling–on the last day of the Tour.

Last year, Vollering and SD Worx dominated the Tour. The team won four of the Tour’s eight stages, held the yellow jersey from start to finish, put two riders on the final podium, took the green jersey for winning the Points Classification, and won the Tour’s Teams Classification. Defending Vollering’s title is one of the team’s main goals 2024.

78th tour of spain 2023 stage 13

As the final grand tour of the season, the Vuelta a España is traditionally one of the last chances for riders hoping to end the year on high note, earn a contract for the following season, or get themselves in shape for the world championships in late-September. So with lots of mountains and a start list filled with motivated riders, the Vuelta always delivers some of the year’s most exciting racing.

This year’s race begins in Portugal, with two time trials, eight mountain stages, and several jagged, hilly stages (some of which have short uphill finishes of their own) to test the riders. Every year the organizers create a course that seems to say: “If you’re not a climber, stay home.”

At this point in the year it’s tough to predict who will add the Spanish grand tour to their program as lots of things can change between now and August. But we’re hoping that last year’s surprise-but-not-a-surprise winner, American Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike), will get a chance to come back and defend his title from last year.

96th uci cycling world championships glasgow 2023 men elite road race

After taking place in Glasgow in early-August last year (as part of the UCI’s “mega world championships”), this year’s World Road Race Championships are heading to Zurich and moving back to their usual spot on the calendar in late-September, with our favorite events–the Elite Road Races–taking place on the final weekend of the month.

On Saturday, the Elite Women will complete a 154km road race that begins in Ulster and ends with four laps of a tough, 27km finishing circuit in and around Zurich. The next day, the Elite Men will cover a 274km course that starts in Winterthur and concludes with seven laps of the Zurich finishing circuit.

This is another race for Classics riders, with a finishing circuit that should favor the riders we saw at the front of last year’s World Championship road races. In the women’s race, Kopecky will be a favorite to defend her title, but she’ll face stiff competition from the Dutch, most likely led by her SD Worx teammate Vollering, who–despite being one of the sport’s best racers–has never won a rainbow jersey. We love how races like the Olympics and Worlds pit riders who spend much of the season as teammates against one another.

The men’s race should play out in a similar way–albeit with fewer teammates racing against teammates. The defending champion–van der Poel–should again be the top favorite, with the Belgians–led by van Aert and Evenepoel–his biggest rivals.

How to Watch Dwars door Vlaanderen, a Fun Midweek Semi-Classic

W ednesday brings the final dress rehearsal for riders hoping to win Sunday’s Tour of Flanders: Dwars door Vlaanderen. With races for both men and women, this midweek semi-classic with a misleading and hard-to-pronounce name (we just call it “Dwars”) is worth carving out some time to watch.

First raced in 1945, Dwars door Vlaanderen (which translates to “across Flanders”) was originally called Dwars door België (“across Belgium”), because it went from Sint Truiden (in eastern Belgium) to Waregem (in western Belgium). From 1946 until 1964 it became a two-day stage race, with the first stage starting in Waregem and finishing in Sint Truiden or Liège, and the second stage taking the riders back “across” to Waregem. In 1999 the name changed to Dwars door Vlaanderen, perhaps to reflect the fact that the race didn’t really cut across the entire country anymore. (It doesn’t even cross Flanders.)

For decades, the race was held on the Wednesday after Milan-Sanremo and two days before the E3 Classic, making it the first Flemish race after the Italian Monument and a bit of a soft-opener for many riders building up for the cobbled classics. But in 2017 the event was added to the WorldTour calendar, and in 2018 it moved back one week, putting it right between Ghent-Wevelgem and the Tour of Flanders and making it the final chance for riders hoping to test themselves before Sunday’s Flemish Monument.

That’s put the semi-classic right in the crosshairs of some of the sport’s best cobbled classic specialists, and several of them have won Dwars (which still finishes in Waregem) and then the Tour of Flanders four days later. The Netherlands’ Mathieu van der Poel was the last to do so. The Dutchman made Dwars the first race of his cobbled classics campaign in 2022, winning in Waregem four days before winning his second Tour of Flanders. Overall, Belgians have won 54 of the event’s 77 men’s editions, and no one has won the race more than twice in his career.

A women’s race was added in 2012, and—as is the case with most of the spring classics (and heck, just about any race on the women’s calendar these days)—the Dutch have dominated the event, winning 9 of its 11 editions. Amy Pieters holds the record with three victories.

Here’s everything else you need to know about Wednesday’s Dwars door Vlaanderen semi-classic:

The 188K men’s race begins in Roeselare and takes a jagged southwestern route toward the first of the race’s eight cobbled sectors and twelve climbs. THings get harder once the race passes Oudenaarde, home of the Tour of Flanders museum and the finish of the Flemish Monument. From here the race covers two circuits of hills and cobbled sectors that usually break the race wide open.

After passing over the Knokteberg and the Hotond for the second time, the course heads back toward Oudenaarde, then keeps going northwest as the race makes its way toward Waregem. At this point the riders will pass over the Nokereberg twice as they complete a local finishing circuit that brings them through Waregem once before the finish.

The 130K women’s race begins in Waregem, then quickly joins the route taken by the men earlier in the day. After passing through Oudenaarde, the women complete one loop through the hills south of the famous city, then head back north toward Waregem, where they’ll complete the same finishing circuit as the men. Overall the women will cover seven sections of cobbles and twelve hills on the day.

Like Friday’s E3 Saxo Classic, the course of Dwars door Vlaanderen lends itself to aggressive racing–especially during the portion of the race that loops through the Flemish hills south of Oudenaarde. These roads are home to some of the toughest hills in Flanders, and while Dwars omits many of the key climbs from Sunday’s Monument, there’s no shortage of opportunities for riders and teams hoping to blow the race apart.

How to Watch

If you signed up for FloBikes ($150/year or $30/month) before Ghent-Wevelgem, then you’ve also bought yourself access to Dwars door Vlaanderen (and Sunday’s Tour of Flanders). Both the men’s and women’s events will be available live and on-demand via FloBikes.com, the FloSports IOS app, and the FloSports app for Amazon FireTV, Roku, and Apple TV.

In Europe, clocks won’t spring ahead until Sunday, so fans on the east coast are still five hours behind the race’s local time. We’ll probably tune-in around 9:30 a.m. EDT–just as the men hit the hills on their first loop south of Oudenaarde. The men’s race is expected to end around two hours later, and the women’s race should wrap-up by about 12:45 p.m. EDT.

What Happened Last Year

Taking advantage of a chance to lead the team himself, France’s Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) attacked out of a breakaway 4K from the finish line in Waregem to win Dwars door Vlaanderen just four days after being”gifted” Ghent-Wevelgem by his teammate, Belgium’s Wout van Aert.

There were no gifts in Dwars, though. Laporte won the race with a mix of strength and tactical savvy. After spending much of the day on the attack, Spain’s Oier Lazkano (Movistar) took second. American Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) was third.

In the women’s event, after a series of attacks inside the final 20K, the Netherland’s Demi Vollering (Team SD Worx) finally escaped from a select group of favorites. Initially, Vollering’s compatriot, Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma), followed the move, but she proved unable to stay with Vollering all the way to the finish. The defending champion, Italy’s Chairra Consonni (UAE Team ADQ), was second and Vos finished third.

Riders to Watch

Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma)

Still trying to win the Tour of Flanders or Paris-Roubaix, Van Aert has taken an unconventional approach to preparing for the cobbled classics by skipping stage races like Paris-Nice or Tirreno-Adriatico and the season’s first Monument, Milano-Sanremo. Instead the Belgian and several teammates went to Mount Teide on the Canary Islands to train at altitude.

Time will tell if it was the right decision. Van Aert looked good at Friday’s E3 Saxo Classic , but he crashed on the Paterberg just as van der Poel attacked. The Belgian then skipped Sunday’s Ghent-Wevelgem to give his body a chance to continue adjusting to being back at sea level. Dwars will be his final test before Sunday’s Tour of Flanders.

Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek)

Pedersen has been scoring victories since early February, but in winning Sunday’s Ghent-Wevelgem–by defeating none other than van der Poel in a two-up sprint–he’s shown no signs of fading. If Pedersen, who finished fifth here last year, takes a back seat in order to stay fresh for Flanders, look for teammates like Belgium’s Jasper Stuyven, Latvia’s Toms Skujins, or Italy’s Jonathan Milan to lead the way instead, perhaps profiting from the fact that Pedersen will be heavily marked after Sunday’s win.

Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck)

Philipsen was a victim of tactics in Sunday’s Ghent-Wevelgem. With van der Poel off the front for much of the second half of the race, there was little he could do other than sit in the peloton and wait to sprint for whatever spots were left by the end of the afternoon. He ended the day fourth. But van der Poel isn’t racing Wednesday, so Philipsen can ride for himself in Dwars. Fourth in Waregem last year, it will be interesting to see if he follows attacks or asks his team to try and bring the race back together for a field sprint.

Demi Vollering (Team SD Worx-Protime)

The defending champion, Vollering is making her Belgian classics debut in Dwars–just as she did last year. Her presence gives SD Worx–who already has no shortage of cards to play–another ace. She and her teammates–like Belgium’s Lotte Kopecky and Switzerland’s Marlen Reusser–can take turns attacking, using their collective strength to wear out the competition. And if the race comes back together–like it did at the end of Sunday’s Ghent-Wevelgem–they have one of the fastest sprinters in the world–the Netherland’s Lorena Wiebes–for a possible field sprint.

Chiara Consonni (UAE Team ADQ)

Consonni clearly likes Dwars door Vlaanderen: she won the race in 2022 and was last year’s runner-up. Fourth in Thursday’s Classic Brugge-De Panne and third in Sunday’s Ghent-Wevelgem, she looks ready to score another high finish in Waregem but will need to find a way to overcome the strength of SD Worx-Protime to take her first classic victory.

Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma)

Vos has won just about every race on the women’s calendar, but surprisingly, she’s never won Dwars door Vlaanderen. In fact, last year was the first time she’s taken the start, and she ended the day third. The midweek semi-classic is the Dutchwoman’s first race since Strade Bianche in early March, and she’s hoping it kicks-off a successful ten-day run, one that ends with a victory in Paris-Roubaix two Saturdays from now.

Other Riders to Watch

Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike), Oier Lazkano (Movistar), Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates), Jhonatan Narváez (INEOS Grenadiers), Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl - Trek)

It’s time for the final test before the Tour of Flanders.

2024 Tour de France begins June 29 and includes historic firsts. Everything to know

The Paris Olympics and Paralympics will not be the only prestigious international sporting event held in France this summer.

The Tour de France, the preeminent event on the men’s cycling calendar, will return for its 111th edition from June 29 to July 21. During the three-week ride, 176 cyclists, representing 22 teams of eight, will complete 21 stages across hilly, flat and mountainous terrain. The course includes a grueling 52,230 meters (over 170,000 feet) of elevation gain and is 3,492 kilometers (2,170 miles) long. The taxing schedule includes only two rest days.

This year’s race will start in Florence, Italy, and conclude at the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, France. It will be the first time the finish line is not in or near Paris because the city will be hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games. And the first time since 1975 the race will not finish on the Champs-Élysées.

The final stage will also break from tradition as it will be one of two time trial stages, which means the leader could be determined in the final leg. The last time the Tour de France ended with a time trial was in 1989.

In addition to Italy and France, the route passes through San Marino and Monaco. The route is famous for its picturesque scenery, from quaint rural villages to the towering Alps.

Each stage is timed, and the rider with the lowest cumulative time across all stages wins the acclaimed maillot jaune, or yellow jersey, to signify the general classification winner. Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard, 27, hopes to seek a coveted three-peat but is still working his way back from a serious crash that hospitalized him for 12 days in April. If he does race, he will face fierce competition from a talented field that includes 2020 and 2021 winner Tadej Pogača of Slovenia.

Separate awards are also given to the best sprinter, climber and young cyclist.

Sepp Kuss, who finished as the top American in 12th place at last year’s Tour de France, is also set to return. Like last year, he will race on the same team as Vingegaard.

In Belgium, stupefaction after federal parliamentary elections

Proving the polls wrong, Wallonia swung to the right on Sunday to renew the House of Representatives. This result stunned Flanders, where the rise of the far right turned out to be weaker than expected.

LETTER FROM BENELUX

N-VA president Bart De Wever (right) after a meeting with King Philippe of Belgium to discuss the results of the regional, federal and European elections, Brussels, June 12, 2024.

It looks like an electoral magic trick. While, on Sunday, June 9, Flanders witnessed the unexpected narrow victory of nationalist conservatives over the xenophobic and separatist far right in federal and regional elections – on the same day as the European elections – Wallonia voted for the center and the right. This was unprecedented, and on Monday, June 10, it prompted the powerful Socialist Party (PS) led by Paul Magnette – who offered his resignation as the head of the party, which was turned down – to indicate that it would be in the opposition for the next five years, at all levels of power.

It was another surprise when, less than 48 hours after the elections, the two French-speaking winners, the liberal Mouvement Réformateur (MR) and the centrist Les Engagés, announced an agreement to form a regional government in Wallonia. In a country still reeling from the famous crisis of 2010-2011, when it took 541 days to create a federal coalition – a record in contemporary European history – the event was bound to make headlines.

In Flanders most of all, the Walloon tectonic movement stunned public opinion, commentators and politicians. They, in fact, were witnessing the collapse of the entire French-speaking left: the PS lost 6 of its 22 federal MPs, the environmentalists retained only 4 of their 13 seats, and the communists of the Belgian Workers' Party proved all the polling institutes wrong by receding (8 seats, i.e., 2 seats), whereas they had been predicted to triumph. The radical left-wing party only believed in its victory for a few minutes on Sunday afternoon, when a TV channel announced it. It was a mistake, due to an encoding error by pollsters who were decidedly in poor shape.

Bart De Wever, leader of the Neo-Flemish Alliance (N-VA), the man who for years had been hammering home the idea that Belgium's "two democracies" were too different to cohabit for much longer, was also astonished by the election results in Wallonia. "It's very surprising, almost unbelievable. It's a new reality," he said. Indeed, the establishment of a right-wing government in Namur, the region's political capital, is even more surprising for him, given that in Flanders his own party will have to form an alliance with the Christian Democrats (centrists) as well as the socialists of Vooruit, who will need to be persuaded to accept a budgetary austerity plan.

Trucks packed with counterfeit bills

Seeing a right-wing majority in the south of the kingdom was a real shock for the most popular man in Flanders, where, in 2013, the "Wallbanie" was mocked with glee, triggering the anger of the Albanian ambassador in Brussels at the time. In 2005, De Wever traveled to Strépy-Thieu, in the province of Hainaut, with trucks packed with counterfeit euro bills. His goal was to denounce the flow of "billions of euros" from Flanders to Wallonia: three years earlier, it was in Strépy-Thieu that the world's largest and most expensive boat elevator had been inaugurated.
