How to Spend a Weekend in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia

Last Updated on June 23, 2021

Looking for a fun and exciting road trip in Nova Scotia this summer? Then I recommend a drive down the South Shore to Mahone Bay. Here are my suggestions on how to spend a weekend in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia.

rene boudreau elevate and explore black nova scotia

My name is René Boudreau and I am the founder of Elevate & Explore Black Nova Scotia , a business aimed at encouraging more Black travellers to visit Nova Scotia, and to inspire people from all backgrounds to explore our beautiful province! While the covid-19 pandemic has come with many challenges, it has given us more motivation to travel within the province and experience the beauty amongst us, which is something my business aims to promote.

I recently took a road trip to beautiful Mahone Bay on the South Shore of Nova Scotia with three friends for a weekend getaway and business opportunity. Growing up, I did lot of travelling throughout the province, however Mahone bay is one town that I never took the time to explore.

Before starting my business, if someone were to ask me “Do you want to go to Mahone Bay?”, my initial response would be “What’s in Mahone Bay?”

Well, now I can answer that question!

Day 1 in Mahone Bay

It was a sunny Friday afternoon when we set out for our overnight adventure. The drive to Mahone Bay from the city is approximately 1 hour and we used this time to catch up and vibe to our favorite songs. I love highway driving and thankfully, the weather was beautiful, making the drive much more enjoyable.

Upon arrival, we checked in to the Kitch’inn Bed & Breakfast where we stayed overnight and participated in their collaboration package with Saltbox Brewing Company: Mahone Bay: Room with a Brew . Once we got settled in, we went to Saltbox Brewing Company, a short walk down the street. There, we tried different beers and ciders. The Lumberjack Ale was definitely one of my favourites.

After the brewery we ordered pizza from a local pizza shop called Recardo’s, to take back to the bed & breakfast for a late dinner.

We had some extra time before our next package, so we stopped at the Barn Coffee House. The Barn is a rustic little coffee shop with delicious hot and cold beverages and fresh baked goods. Highly recommend!

Aside from great restaurants, cute cafes and a brewery Mahone Bay is also a great place to do a little shopping. There are several gift shops with great local souvenirs like the Teazer, Lighthouse Market and the Northern Sun Gallery & Gifts. They are the perfect spots to grab a souvenir for yourself or to find a present for someone back home.

We then went to Amos Pewter (Gift Shop) where we joined an artisan in the Amos Pewter workshop. During this workshop, we saw a demonstration on the practice of hand-crafting pewter pieces (part of the ‘ For the Love of Seafood Package ’). I personalized a sand dollar with the words ‘Elevate & Explore’. A little piece of Mahone Bay to take back home with me! Amos’ products are beautiful and make a great gift for yourself or someone special.

After leaving Amos Pewter, we went to Rebecca’s Restaurant where I ordered fish tacos, and cremé brulee for dessert. The food was delicious, and the staff were friendly. I especially enjoyed sitting by the window and taking in the beautiful view of the three iconic churches.

8 Top-Rated Things to Do in Lunenburg & Mahone Bay, NS

Written by Barbara Radcliffe Rogers Updated Dec 26, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Both the historic port town of Lunenburg and neighboring Mahone Bay were fishing and shipbuilding centers; ships built along this shore have sailed the world's waters for more than two centuries. These combined heritages make this area of Nova Scotia popular for tourists, with attractions and things to do that highlight both.

Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

The famed sailing ship Bluenose II is often in port, moored alongside the excellent maritime museum. Other museums record railroad history and the lives of early settlers. Colorful wooden homes, waterfront warehouses, and elegant churches fill the steep slopes of Lunenburg, while Mahone Bay's low shore is lined with a postcard scene: a trio of stately churches and pretty Victorian-era homes.

Because of its shipbuilding past and its founding in 1753, Lunenburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Shopping is a popular thing to do in Mahone Bay, which is especially known for its studios and galleries featuring the work of local artists and craftspeople.

You won't miss any of the top places to visit if you plan your visit to Nova Scotia using our list of things to do in Lunenburg and Mahone Bay.

1. Bluenose II

2. fisheries museum of the atlantic, 3. lunenburg old town heritage district, 4. blue rocks, 5. st. john's anglican church, 6. sailing, whale & kayak tours, 7. mahone bay museum, 8. knaut-rhuland house museum, where to stay in lunenburg and mahone bay for sightseeing, map of things to do in lunenburg & mahone bay, ns.

Bluenose II

Lunenburg's claim to fame is the legendary Bluenose , a fishing schooner built here in 1921. The vessel was the world's best racing schooner, and the winner of many international races.

Known as the "Queen of the North Atlantic," Bluenose became the symbol of Nova Scotia and an icon for all Canada. After the original schooner was wrecked in the 1940s, a replica, Bluenose II , was built, and Lunenburg is her home port.

You're most likely to see the ship here in June and September—midsummer is often spent on tour or racing (the full schedule is on the website). When in port, Bluenose II welcomes passengers on two-hour sailing cruises , and on some excursions, you will be able to join the crew to participate in a day of sailing, taking a turn at the wheel, standing watch, handling sails, and learning how to sail a schooner.

Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic

Housed in a former fish factory on the waterfront, the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic tells the story of sailing and fishing along eastern Canada's coasts from the time when the Mi'kmaq fished these waters.

Old photographs and prints and examples of past tools and equipment bring exhibits to life, as do the frequent hands-on activities and real-life stories told by retired fishermen. The Marine Life Gallery explores the ocean depths and the creatures that live there.

For many, the highlights are the actual boats moored alongside the museum, especially the Theresa E Connor , Canada's oldest saltbank schooner , built here in 1938. Here and on the Cape Sable trawler, museum staff—some of whom once sailed on similar vessels—demonstrate the traditional methods of cod fishing and tell what life was like on board.

Address: 68 Bluenose Drive, Lunenburg

Lunenburg Old Town Heritage District

Lunenburg is the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America, and the Lunenburg Old Town Heritage Conservation District encompasses about 400 major buildings, most dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The entire area retains the original geometrical street grid, and on a walk though it, you will see colorfully painted homes and shops with wooden trim, as well as warehouses and other maritime buildings on the waterfront.

The district is cited by Canada's Register of Historic Places for its "dense concentration of historic architecture."

Blue Rocks village

About a 10-minute drive from Lunenburg along the scenic southern shore, is the old fishing village of Blue Rocks. The picturesque little harbor is almost completely free of commercial incursions, apart from a general store and an artist's studio or two.

Find an out-of-the-way place to park and walk along the shore to see the fantastically carved rocks. Thin layers of different density rock in shades of blue, gray, and white have eroded unevenly to form a surface of three-dimensional bands.

This is not a place to just drive to and snap a few pictures then leave. You need to walk along the shore to appreciate rock formations and the changing scenery.

St. John's Anglican Church

The second oldest Anglican church in North America , St. John's is one of the most outstanding examples of the Carpenter Gothic style in North America. What you see today is a meticulous reconstruction after the church was nearly destroyed by fire in 2001.

Volunteers are often on hand to tell how local people gathered up the shattered fragments of the stained-glass windows after the fire, so local artists could incorporate these into the new windows.

The roof beams used in the original church, which was built in 1754, were shipped from the old King's Chapel in Boston . Notice the stars on the chancel ceiling, which are aligned to show the sky over Lunenburg at the time of Christ's birth, as researched by an astronomer.

Address: 81 Cumberland Street, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

Kayaks in Blue Rocks

One of the most enjoyable things to do in Lunenburg and Mahone Bay is to explore the many (365, it is claimed) islands and get a new perspective on the southern coast of Nova Scotia from the sea. You have a lot of options, among them a whale watching ship, on a ketch under sail, or under your own power in a kayak.

Guided kayak tours leave from both Blue Rocks and Mahone Bay, where there are also kayak rentals for exploring independently. The Eastern Star is a 48-foot ketch that does sailing tours from Lunenburg, sailing among the islands.

Whale watching tours from Lunenburg move out into the Atlantic, where minke, pilot, finback, and humpback whales are commonly seen, as are seals, porpoises, and dolphins. Puffins are also a common sight in the summer.

Mahone Bay

Although small, the Mahone Bay Museum inside the former Begin family home in the center of Mahone Bay does a good job depicting the early history as settlers arrived and spread into the area in the mid-1700s, and the town's later shipbuilding legacy.

There is information on the three landmark churches, the area in World War I, and the enigmatic Oak Island. The map showing where some of the more than 500 ships built in Mahone Bay sailed is especially interesting. There are exhibits on early kitchens and antique toys, as well as the Begin family.

Address: 578 Main Street, Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia

One of the places to visit while touring the district is the Knaut-Rhuland House , a free museum that illuminates the lives of the early settlers and their descendants. In addition to period furnishings and exhibits, the museum hosts workshops and demonstrations of traditional household crafts.

As you walkaround Lunenburg, be sure to notice the unusual architectural feature known as the "Lunenburg Bump"—a large overhanging dormer usually at the center of the front façade. This feature is unique to the area; you'll also see one at the Begin house, the historical museum in Mahone Bay.

Address: 125 Pelham Street, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

These hotels and bed-and-breakfasts are all low to moderately priced in the off-season, but expect some rates to soar in July and August.

Hotels in Lunenburg and Mahone Bay:

  • Many of the 24 guest rooms at the Lunenburg Arms Hotel overlook the harbor and, when it's in port, the schooner Bluenose . Continental breakfast and parking are included, and the hotel offers extras like robes and allergy-friendly duvets.
  • Rooms at the highly rated Rum Runner Inn also overlook the harbor, and some have balconies so you can enjoy the view. In-room refrigerators are a bonus.
  • Also on the waterfront, Smugglers Cove Inn has a variety of individually decorated rooms, with king- or queen-sized beds, all with elevator access. There's also an apartment with a kitchenette.

B&Bs in Lunenburg and Mahone Bay:

  • Mahone Bay Bed and Breakfast occupies a beautifully preserved Victorian home in the center of town, close to the museum and galleries. The often-photographed house has lovely gardens as well.
  • Also on the main street in Mahone Bay, the Fairmont House Bed & Breakfast overlooks the bay and is well-known for its bountiful hot breakfasts, and the home-made jams and jellies.
  • Located in a quiet park-side spot of Lunenburg's historic Old Town, the Wellshire Bed and Breakfast offers luxurious rooms with private baths.
  • The Pelham House Bed & Breakfast is another favorite, featuring options like a four-person family suite and a ground-floor room for those who would like to avoid stairs.

Our Lunenburg, Mahone Bay and Peggy’s Cove Experience

Here’s a detailed breakdown of our exact day itinerary from Halifax down the South Shore coast to Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, and Peggy’s Cove.

man with backpack walking along harbour with colourful houses in front.

Our Nova Scotia South Shore day itinerary consisted of (in order):

  • Leaving Halifax
  • Mahone Bay (+Lunch)
  • Driving through Chester
  • White Sails Cafe (Pit Stop)
  • Swiss Air 111 Memorial
  • Peggy’s Cove
  • Returning to Halifax

We had numerous stops along the way for food, sightseeing, etc. We took Highway 103 out of the city towards Lunenburg, then used Trunk 3 (+ Lighthouse Route) to basically follow the coastline back in the direction of Peggy’s Cove/Halifax.

Driving to Lunenburg

If you have a car – like we did – the drive to Lunenburg is pretty simple.

Leaving Halifax past Long Lake Provincial Park, we hopped on Highway 103 heading southwest out of the city towards Lunenburg. The drive is about 50 minutes. You can follow signs off the highway to Northwest Road (324) all the way into town.

Once you get to Lunenburg, there is street parking on neighbourhood streets a short walk from the waterfront. This is where we parked.

Alternatively, there’s a massive paid parking lot right in the heart of town between the docks and the houses.

The central parking lot is likely to be very busy with cars and buses during the summer months so just keep that in mind. We cover everything about going from Halifax to Lunenburg here in more detail, if you need!

Visiting Lunenburg

colourful seafront houses with wooden pier in front with chairs and boat.

As mentioned, our first stop of the day was the town of Lunenburg. Lunenburg is a popular place to visit in Canada because of its historical significance.

It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it’s considered “the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America”.

Established in 1753, the town is largely unchanged from a layout perspective and features much of the original wooden architecture.

We just walked around to take in the sights and shops. We started at the waterfront where there are numerous tourism booths promoting various attractions and tours. We actually saw the Bluenose II come in from a sailing tour (which you can book).

Once it was docked, you could walk onto the upper deck for free – so we did that. It was neat to be on such a prominent part of Canadian history!

tall ship without sails pulling into wooden dock with green shoreline behind.

We wandered along the harbour to the quieter areas where you’ll find an old antique shop with lots of spindrifts for sale. Other attractions, like The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic , are also down there.

After walking along the harbour, we headed more into the town to have a look at the many shops, cafes, inns and B&Bs, and other historic points of interest.

turquoise house with sidewalk out front with fish sign hanging on pole above.

Montague Street has many places to eat and drink so be sure to check it out. Our friends like Shipwright Brewing Company but there are quite a few other options as well. You’ll probably find a place that suits your food/drink needs!

Further up the hill (the whole town is essentially a grid system), Lincoln Street has a number of art galleries you can explore. A local cafe, Laughing Whale Coffee Roasters , is also on Lincoln Street.

At the top of the hill on Fox Street, you can find Hillcrest Cemetery close to the Lunenburg Academy. It’s a beautiful old building – which is apparently haunted – and is worth photographing.

Don’t forget to just wander around and enjoy the wooden buildings, their unique architecture, and the various colours of each of them!

large manor estate house with green shrubs in front and historic plaque embedded into rock.

Oh, and if you need to use the washroom, the Bluenose Public Washroom Lunenburg was clean and convenient close to the waterfront.

Our Extra Tip: From Lunenburg, you can head out of town by car and hike from Hirtle’s Beach to Gaff Point for nice ocean views!

Visiting Mahone Bay

sailboats sitting in harbour with green tall grass in front and grey skies above.

After leaving Lunenburg, we headed up the road/coast for only about 15 minutes (on Trunk 3) to Mahone Bay.

This is another smaller seaside town with colourful buildings that house shops, cafes, historic inns, and much more.

colourful shop fronts with paved street in front and grey sky above.

You can also explore the shoreline along Mahone Harbour. Our main purpose for a stop in Mahone Bay was for lunch, so we headed to The Biscuit Eater .

This is a cafe/restaurant and book shop tucked away just a short walk from the main triangle intersection in town.

small house cafe with white wooden sign in front beside pathway and grass.

We had coffees and juices and biscuit sandwiches – like a BLT or pulled chicken with brie and cranberries – but on a biscuit. They also had a biscuit basket which had spicy jalapeños and creamy slaw.

Everything we had was really good and the guy serving us was super friendly!

We didn’t go on this visit, but our local friends said that the Tea Brewery is also very good. The Boulangerie La Vendéenne also has good French pastries on the way back to Highway 103 from Mahone Bay.

Driving Between Mahone Bay and Peggy’s Cove

After lunch, we left Mahone Bay and headed for Peggy’s Cove – but took our time meandering along Trunk 3. This road offers a mix of seaside views and dense forest which makes it really pretty.

paved road seen through interior of a car with water to the right.

About 25 minutes after Mahone Bay we made a point to pass through the tiny town of Chester. It’s a historic seaside village where you can check out the boats in the harbour. After looping down to the water, we drove up on Queen Street through the main area.

This is where you’ll find galleries, a tavern, cafes – like The Kiwi Cafe – and gift shops.

After Chester, it was another 50 minutes to our next stop – White Sails Bakery & Deli (Address: 12930 Peggys Cove Rd, Tantallon, NS B3Z 2K4).

We’d suggest driving Trunk 3 all the way there. This way, you can get ocean views (and can even stop at a beach or two) around St. Margaret’s Bay. We especially loved the part of the drive around Queensland Beach Nova Scotia .

red bakery building in distance with sugar coated donut held in hand in front.

At the bakery, they have delicious sweets on the left and a massive menu board for savoury lunch items on the right. As this was a “sweets” stop, we got things like chocolate chip cookies, a Chocolate Skor Bar, and a cinnamon sugar donut for takeaway.

If you’re not in a rush, they have picnic tables to sit down by the water – in case you want this to be a longer stop.

They also have a deli as well so they do things like smoked meat sandwiches. White Sails is directly off the road (Peggy’s Cove Road) making it an easy stop.

After this stop, you’ll already be on Peggy’s Cove Rd, which is part of the famous Lighthouse Route, and can head south towards Peggy’s Cove!

Before we got to Peggy’s Cove, we made a stop just up the road at the Swissair Flight 111 Memorial Site .

On September 2, 1998, Swissair flight 111 crashed into the ocean about 8 kilometres offshore. With no survivors, the multi-nation recovery effort that followed impacted Halifax (and the surrounding area) profoundly.

Now, you can visit a rock monument that remembers those who died and the efforts that followed. The memorial site is reachable after a short walk on a trail along the rocky, barren coastline.

There’s a small parking lot making it easy to stop and there are various bits of information to read along the way.

On a clear day, you can see out to sea and easily see Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse. Unfortunately, it was foggy the day we visited so we didn’t get that experience!

Visiting Peggy’s Cove

white lighthouse with people standing at the base with large rocks around and grey sky above.

If you drive another 5 minutes down the road, you’re basically at Peggy’s Cove and the location of the famous Lighthouse.

When you arrive, there are actually two parking lots: one near the visitor centre and another very close to the actual Lighthouse. We cover all of this in our specific guide on going from Halifax to Peggy’s Cove .

We chose the first parking lot so that we could walk through the small village of Peggy’s Cove before reaching the coastline to see the Lighthouse.

wooden boardwalk with lighthouse and rocky shoreline in distance behind.

Up near the Lighthouse, there are large, new wooden boardwalks which are great for accessibility.

There’s also a renewed pathway on the rocky terrain heading towards the lighthouse. This pathway ends, however, and it’s all rough coastline walking (a mix of flat rock, large boulders, and grassy areas) to the Lighthouse.

small fishing village with foggy skies and still water on shallow cove in front.

The rugged area around the coast is basically a free-for-all where you can clamber your way across the coastline (at your own risk).

The day we visited was quite foggy so we noticed fewer people visiting (for July) – but it was still quite busy. The weather made the area very mysterious and yet very peaceful.

We just walked around taking photos, exploring tide pools and had a sit down on the flat rock taking in the sea air.

very rocky terrain with a few hikers looking into the distance with misty skies overhead.

You pretty much go anywhere you want – but listen to the posted signs. Dry, white rocks are generally safest but it is very dangerous to get close to the crashing waves of the rocky shoreline.

Keep in Mind: Rocks that look black mean the waves can reach there. It’s definitely a no-go zone. Tourists die there unfortunately and the warning signs make no joke about this saying “you’ll be rewarded with death”. So please, be careful!

As for amenities, there’s a visitor centre with washrooms, some shops, small galleries, and a café/restaurant close to the lighthouse (where the second parking lot is). This is also where you typically find the tour buses parked.

That’s why we recommend the parking lot further away because you get a sense of the little fishing village and cove on the way.

Peggy’s Cove Insider Trail Tip: Just east of Peggy’s Cove is Polly Cove Hiking Trail . It’s more rugged and less busy than Peggy’s Cove. You get a good view of Peggy’s Cove and Lighthouse from about 500 metres to 1 km away. It’s very open with different paths so you can walk as long or as short as you please!

Returning to Halifax

After our time at Peggy’s Cove, we hopped back in the car and continued back towards Halifax. We took the same road – now called Prospect Road (333) – all the way back.

It rolls along the south shore past lakes, more rocky shorelines, and forests before spitting you out by Long Lake Provincial Park. From there we headed back towards Downtown via Trunk 3 but you can also easily hop on Highway 102 to drive elsewhere in the city/region!

The ultimate self-sustaining luxury retreat off the coast of Nova Scotia's South Shore

If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that our homes now have to be prepared for a whole range of things that might be coming our way.

On the shores of Nova Scotia, an idyllic 10-acre private island — anchored by a massive main lodge — is already fully equipped for the worst-case scenarios.

Built by an American after the 9/11 attacks, the island was “designed with security, seclusion, and self-sustainability in mind,” and has its own backup power source, heat, water, bunkers of canned food, producing fruit trees, greenhouses, medicinal plants, and everything else one might need to isolate if the situation requires it. But don’t go thinking ‘bunker’ or ‘shelter’.

Accessible only by boat or helicopter, the island is as upscale as it is self-sufficient and secure, featuring plenty of high-end amenities to complement its robust self-sustainability features.

It’s also up for grabs, listed for $11,500,000 (or CAD $15,800,000) with Ian Smith and Mariana Cowan of The Cowan-Smith Team with Coldwell Banker Maritime Realty.
