View the towering Art Deco façades of the Empire State Building

You can’t go to New York without setting eyes on the Empire State Building, an icon of the city skyline and a symbol of innovation and triumph - everything that makes New York so unique. A masterpiece of modern engineering, this Art Deco skyscraper is a staggering 102 storeys high, and you can head to the observation decks for panoramic views over the city.

See the pulsating Times Square

You’ve seen it in countless shows and movies, and now you’ll walk in the footsteps of some of the world’s most famous stars when we take you to Times Square. It’s a hub of adventure, and you can gaze up at the flashing billboards, marvel at the street entertainers, or simply watch the world rush past in the “Crossroads of the World”.

Go behind the scenes on Broadway

Our New York trips take you to the bright lights of Broadway and beyond, with a very special behind-the-scenes tour of this legendary theater district. You’ll meet a Broadway show performer and find out how the famous shows are created, from the first auditions to the live performance, and all the costumes, choreography and chaos in between.

Ascend to the Top of The Rock for dramatic views of the Manhattan

If you’re looking for stunning views over Manhattan, we’ll take you to the Top of the Rock at the famous Rockefeller Center. First, you’ll feel the thrill of gliding 70 floors into the sky as you ride the elevator to the open-air observation deck. Then, you’ll step out into 360-degree views of the world’s most iconic skyline. It’s an experience you’ll never forget.

Our top 5 things to do in New York

The Big Apple is an adventurer’s playground, and we’ll show you all the very best things to do in New York, from the Empire State Building to the beautiful Strawberry Fields.

American Museum of Natural History

As one of the largest natural history museums in the world, you’ll be amazed by this institution, complete with a planetarium, library and over 34 million specimens from fossils and meteorites to cultural artifacts. Learn about volcanoes in 3D film, marvel at a T-Rex skeleton, discover Native American culture, or even travel to the universe beyond Earth.

Housed in a UNESCO-listed modernist masterpiece by revered architect Frank Lloyd Wright, you’ll be impressed before you even enter the museum. The spiral ramp and domed skylight make the perfect introduction to the superb collection of modern and contemporary art, including works by Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Vasily Kandinsky and Jeff Koons.

9/11 Memorial & Museum

You’ll have the chance to learn about the tragic history of the 9/11 attacks and World Trade Center bombing at the site where the Twin Towers once stood. We’ll take you around this moving memorial to learn the story of the attacks and the aftermath, and pay tribute to the resilience and strength of the people of New York City.

Best museums in New York

The city’s museums are some of the most incredible places to visit in New York, and we’ll go from iconic art collections and ancient artifacts to moving memorials.

Manhattan clam chowder

Love seafood and soup? You’ll adore this unique clam chowder. It’s famously made with tomatoes and no cream, along with clams, bacon, broth, garlic, red pepper flakes and other vegetables. Created back in the late 19th century in Rhode Island by Portuguese immigrants, it’s still a beloved dish today and you’ve got to give it a try in New York.

New York-style bagel

Soft and chewy in the middle, yet glossy and crunchy at the crust, the New York bagel is one of the city’s greatest masterpieces. It originated from the Jewish community of New York City, and we’ll take you to a 100-year-old Jewish deli in the Upper West Side to taste some of the very best bagels in the city. Don’t forget the cream cheese!

Pastrami sandwich

Famed as New York’s signature sandwich, the classic combo of smoky pink sliced pastrami on rye bread with spicy brown mustard is an unmissable foodie experience in the Big Apple. This delicious invention originated from New York's first Jewish kosher delis in the early 20th century, and we’ll show you all the best places to try this iconic sandwich.

More About New York City

New York City is traditionally broken up into five-boroughs: Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. To the west, there's the island of Manhattan where you'll find most of the iconic attractions like Central Park, The Empire State Building and Times Square. It might be a good idea to give yourself plenty of time to explore this borough. To the north of Manhattan is the Bronx, known for Yankee Stadium and famous Bronx Zoo. Over on the eastside is Queens where you can explore a variety of museums off the beaten path like MoMA PS1, Queens Museum and New York Hall of Science. Over in Brooklyn, look out for the famous Brooklyn Bridge and Coney Island, both have been featured in countless movies and TV shows. Down south is Staten Island connected to Manhattan via the Staten Island Ferry, which gives you a scenic ride of New York Harbor.

  • To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
  • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
  • Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
  • Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
  • If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.

Top Experiences

Central Park : You could easily spend all day at this park. It's home to numerous movie filming locations like Wollman Rink, known for most ice-skating scenes in New York City and Bethesda Terrace, that gorgeous arched terrace with the fountain outside of it with the angel on top, popular with romcoms. Just walk around the park and you'll get a sense of deja vu. The park is also home to the Central Park Zoo and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Statue of Liberty : A gift from the French, she's become a symbol of America. You can only reach her by ferry so make sure to book your ticket in advance to get an up-close and personal look and learn more about this piece of American history.

Empire State Building : Songs have been inspired by this building, the New York skyline wouldn't be quite as stylish without it. While not the tallest building in the city, this 102-story art deco inspired building still offers an amazing view of the city.

Times Square : If you're brave enough come for the epic New Year's Eve ball drop, otherwise come to marvel at the brightly lit square in all its glory on any other day of the year. It's located at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Ave and is surrounded by popular attractions, restaurants and shops.

Using a Travel Agency to Go to NYC: Pros and Cons

Updated June 21, 2021

Using a travel agency can be a good way to explore a new place. But is it the best option for travel to NYC ?

We look at the pros and cons of using a travel agency to go to New York. Below, we consider price, experience, personalization, safety, availability, and authenticity.

#1: Price

Price NYC Travel Agency

Pros: Travel agents have relationships with airlines, hotels, and tour groups. That means they can—in theory—get you a good price.

Cons: Agents work on commission. They earn this commission by encouraging travelers to use airlines, hotels, and tour groups which they have relationships with. So the good deal they offer might not be that good at all—an important consideration for budget travelers to NYC .

Ideally, you’ll work with trip planners who aren’t paid on commission .

#2: Experience

Pros: A travel agent plans trips for a living. That means they’re a pro. They’ll help you learn about all the top places to visit in NYC .

Cons: A travel agent may know a lot about NYC—but they probably don’t live there.

You can’t beat local knowledge . When you have a local plan your trip, you’ll get an itinerary based on their personal experience and knowledge. They’ll share how to use the subway , which NYC attractions locals love , and their best tips for keeping your NYC trip under budget .

#3: Personalization

Personalization Travel Agency NYC

Pros: With a travel agent, you’ll have some room to personalize your trip. They’ll let you pick from a curated list of activities.

Cons: Since your agent depends on their network, your options will be limited. If you’re looking to visit places in NYC that are off the beaten path, then an agent might not be the best fit.

#4: Safety

Pros: Travel agents will make your trip as low-risk as possible.

Cons : Generally, New York City is safe . It’s a big city, but a safe one. So you don’t necessarily need the extra security of working with a travel agent (or the extra cost). A local living in NYC can let you know how they navigate the city safely.

#5: Availability

Availability Travel Agency NYC

Pros: As they plan your trip, travel agents will be available to answer your questions about NYC . They’ll help you decide where to stay , when to visit , and what activities to do .

Cons: Once you arrive in NYC, you may find that your travel agent is harder to reach. When you work with a local , you know they’re nearby—and that they can help out via phone if you run into any issues.

Plus, local trip planners can design a flexible guidebook. That means that you won’t be left scrambling if an unforeseen circumstance impacts your itinerary.

#6: Authenticity

Pros: If your travel agent is an expert on all things NYC, they’ll let you know about the popular places to visit in New York. .

Cons: If you’re hoping for an itinerary that’s less about Times Square and more about NYC’s hidden gems, a travel agent might not be the best bet. Nothing can replace local knowledge .

Conclusion: Have a local plan your trip

ViaHero Travel Travel Agency NYC

See New York City like a local—not a tourist—by having a local plan your trip.

Not only will you see a side of NYC that most visitors miss, but you’ll save time and money in the planning process.

What travelers say about our advisors

Still have questions, what is a travel agency.

A travel agency supports a team of travel advisors who sell, curate and book travel. Travel advisors consult with clients on where to go, what to do and where to stay. In addition to planning and booking trips, advisors communicate with hotels and other partners (tour companies, cruises, etc.) to ensure each trip goes smoothly.

What is the difference between a travel advisor and a travel agent?

The terms travel agent and travel advisor are used interchangeably. The original term was ‘travel agent,’ but the industry has gone through a bit of a rebrand to showcase the breadth of work that a travel advisor does. We use both, but typically refer to our network of travel advisors simply as Fora Advisors.

Fora Advisors (a.k.a. travel advisors / agents) work with clients to understand their travel needs and handle all the travel arrangements, from booking a hotel for a long weekend to planning a honeymoon to securing a room block for a corporate conference.

What are the benefits of working with a travel agent?

Working with a travel agent helps you level up your travel experience. A travel agent handles all the logistics — on-the-ground transfers, hotel and tour bookings, itinerary planning — so you can get the most out of your trip, without any of the stress.

Plus, our Fora travel agents have insider access to over 5,000 preferred partnerships, meaning you get complimentary perks, priority upgrades and so much more at thousands of locations around the globe. We put serious time and airline mileage into visiting these properties in person so we can give you the up-to-date intel on your destination. We also maintain close relationships with hotel management so you’re treated like the VIP you are from the moment you arrive.

In other words, working with a travel agent unlocks a secret travel world you need to be a part of. But don’t just take our word for it… we have tons of 5-star reviews from happy clients.

Will I get perks & benefits when I work with a Fora Advisor?

Yes — big time. Our travel advisors have access to upgrades & perks at over 5,000 partners around the world. Plus, our partnerships with brands like Virtuoso , Four Seasons , Rosewood and beyond — as well as with smaller, independent boutique hotels — ensure you get treated like a VIP wherever you travel to next.

What types of travel can I book with Fora?

You name it, we book it: resort vacations, safaris , city breaks, vacation home rentals, once-in-a-lifetime adventures, weekend escapes…We do it all.

Do Fora Advisors count as Disney travel agents? What about cruise travel agents?

Absolutely. We provide comprehensive training on just about everything in the travel industry, so our advisors are well equipped to curate any client’s dream trip. (Read more about the benefits of booking with a cruise travel agent .)

I’m planning a group trip. Can Fora Advisors help?

Of course! The more the merrier. Whether you’re organizing a family reunion, honeymoon , bachelorette party or company-wide retreat, we’re happy to help. Just get in touch with your Fora Advisor to begin the process.

How do I make the most of my experience when planning a trip with Fora?

Tell us everything. Let us know if you love golf, must have access to a kids’ club or have a soft spot for off-the-beaten-path travel . Serious allergies or dietary restrictions are also very helpful information to share. That way, we’ll only show you options that fit your wants and needs. We also love to hear about your favorite hotels and trips you’ve enjoyed in the past, because that clues us in to your travel style.

If you’ve never worked with a travel advisor before, get our guide on what to expect when booking with a travel agent .

Wait, I kind of want to be a Fora Advisor myself. How can I join?

We love to hear it! We have a guide on how to become a travel agent . Then, when you’re interested in transforming your passion for travel into a meaningful career, apply to become a Fora Advisor today .

Deal alert: Fly nonstop to Hawaii from $190 round-trip

W hen it comes to dream destinations, Hawaii is very likely at the top of most people's bucket lists. Whether you're a solo traveler looking for an outdoor adventure, a newlywed planning a honeymoon or a parent seeking a great vacation for the family, the Hawaiian Islands are a dream destination. Paradise isn't cheap, but you can save significant money on your Hawaii vacation right now thanks to a new fare sale.

Fares to the Big Island, Oahu, Kauai and Maui from cities such as Atlanta, Denver, New York City and Seattle are all discounted. We found some routes available for less than $200 round-trip. Most of these itineraries include layovers, but there are a few nonstops out of Seattle spotlighted below.

The best availability in this sale is from August through November 2024. Some routes do have discounted tickets from July 2024 through March 2025. These are economy fares on Oneworld partners Alaska Airlines and American Airlines, along with Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines and United Airlines. You get a free carry-on bag with all these airlines except United. Checked baggage will cost roughly $35 to $40 each way.

Some of the lowest fares spotlighted in this deal come from booking through an online travel agency .

Deal basics

Airlines : Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines and United Airlines

Routes : Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Minneapolis, New York City and Seattle to Oahu, Maui, the Big Island and Kauai

How to book : By browsing Google Flights , then booking directly with the airline

Travel dates : Primarily between August and November 2024, with select routes available between July 2024 and March 2025

Sample flights

Let's start with some good discounts to Oahu. For September, United Airlines has nonstop fares from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu for just $256 round-trip.

Alaska Airlines has tickets from Denver International Airport (DEN) to HNL in fall starting from $350 round-trip — a significant discount from the normal price.

You can also fly nonstop on Alaska Airlines from SEA to Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA) on the Big Island for only $190 round-trip. That's a really good price for this route. Once again, it's a September itinerary, so if you can travel during that month, you stand the best chance of getting a great deal.

Hawaiian Airlines also has nonstop flights from SEA to Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui for only $257 round-trip.

If you live on the East Coast, you have some good flight options to the Big Island.

For September, you can book tickets on Alaska from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to KOA for $350 round-trip.

Hawaiian Airlines also offers round-trip fares from New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to KOA in September. Prices are available from $351.

You can fly from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to KOA in fall, too, via Alaska Airlines for $350 round-trip.

Maximize your purchase

When you book this deal or any flights, be sure to use a credit card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases, such as:

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : 2 points per dollar spent on travel
  • American Express® Gold Card : 3 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly with the airline or through amextravel.com
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express : 5 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 of these purchases per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar)
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® : 3 points per dollar spent on travel
  • Citi Strata Premier ℠ Card (see rates and fees ): 3 points per dollar spent on air travel

Bottom line

There are many great deals to Hawaii this year, and some of the best prices are for travel in September.

As TPG has reported, Maui is open for business after last year's devastating wildfires. The island wants tourists to return. Remember to be respectful of your surroundings. The historic town of Lahaina suffered tremendous damage in the fires and is still rebuilding. It's best to avoid that area until further notice.

Seattle, Washington

Looking to plan a last-minute summer vacation? Kayak released its annual summer travel report , and, for it, the travel company mined its search data to find out which U.S. destinations are trending among travelers this summer. A surprise, cooler-weather destination emerged as this summer’s most-searched destination: Seattle.

“Perhaps some travelers are unfazed by a bit of wet weather when it comes with a side of gorgeous scenery,” the report says.

The list also includes popular summer vacation mainstays, places like Orlando, a theme park capital, and the pool-spa-culinary playground that’s Las Vegas.

Ahead, the top five U.S. summer vacation spots for summer 2024, according to Kayak’s travel report, and a look at what's new in these trending destinations.

No. 1: Seattle, Washington

Pike Place Market in Seattle

For those looking for a reprieve from the heat, summer highs hover around the low 70s in Seattle, this year’s most searched summer vacation destination on Kayak.

The city has many must-sees, from the Space Needle and Pike Place Market to the color-saturated Chihuly Garden and Glass.

Seattle is also celebrating its 50th year of Pride this June, with professional athletes Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe serving as grand marshals for the annual Seattle Pride Parade on June 30.

Stay at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel , a luxury hotel on the National Register of Historic Places that’s celebrating 100 years this year and where you can turn back time in the Founders Club, a speakeasy-style bar with caviar bumps and classic cocktails.

No. 2: Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas, Nevada and the Sphere

Las Vegas is sizzling hot in the summertime, but thankfully there’s plenty of glistening pools, water misters in cabanas, frozen cocktails, and spas to keep you cool as a cucumber.

What’s new in Las Vegas, Nevada?

The beauty of Vegas is you can come back every summer and be greeted by a bevy of new restaurants and entertainment options. Some highlights this year include the opening of Fontainbleau Las Vegas on the Strip (the spa has a snow shower to keep you cool) and Durango Casino & Resort in the Las Vegas Valley, plus shows at The Sphere.

For high rollers, Aqua Seafood & Caviar Restaurant at Resorts World Las Vegas is Michelin-starred chef Shaun Hergatt’s latest concepts and menu highlights include reserve caviar, king crab legs, and antipasti. Bruno Mars’ Pinky Ring cocktail bar and jazz lounge opened in Bellagio and Mariah Carey has a residency at Park MGM through Aug. 10, 2024.

No. 3: Orlando, Florida

You could also enjoy two destinations on this list on one trip: The Brightline high-speed rail service now connects Orlando to Miami (ranked No. 9).

What’s new in Orlando, Florida?

For those coming for the magic, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure opens at Disney World on June 28, 2024, replacing the controversial Splash Mountain .

Over at Universal Studios Florida, go bananas with the Minions at Illumination’s Minion Land , which opened last August. Next up, DreamWorks Animations’ Themed Land will bring animated characters from movies like “Shrek,” “Trolls” and “Kung Fu Panda” to life in interactive play spaces.

Culinary enthusiasts will want to grab one of the 10 seats at the new Natsu Omakase counter. For fun outside the theme parks, Caribe Royale Resort Orlando debuted its Stadium Club, a next-level sports bar with sports simulators.

No. 4: Honolulu, Hawaii

Honolulu, Hawaii

What would “the best places to visit in the summer list” be without a beach destination? Honolulu is a popular connecting destination for the Hawaiian islands, but is also a sought-after summer stay in and of itself, with outstanding beaches and luxury shopping.

What’s new in Honolulu, Hawaii?

In time for summer travel, the 179-room Romer House Waikīkī made its debut as O’ahu's first adults-only hotel with The Backyard Pool & Bar that serves poolside Japanese-Hawaiian dishes.

The Twin Fin Hotel also recently launched a new experiential surf school led by nine-time Pipeline champion Jamie O’Brien.

No. 5: New York, New York

New York, New York

You could make plenty of repeat visits to New York City, and still have lots remaining on your must-do and must-see list, from a Broadway show to a visit to the Met to watching the Yankees play and see the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks.

What’s new in New York City?

To sprinkle in some new things, check out the new Museum of Food in Drink in Brooklyn, or try some new restaurants like ribeye steak tacos and a cornhusk meringue sundae at Esse Taco in Williamsburg or an 8-course Korean tasting menu with natural wine pairings at Beut.

The newest stay in New York City is the 69-room Warren Street Hotel, where the decor matches the creative energy of the Tribeca neighborhood. The hotel was recently awarded a Michelin key.
