Why Won’t Jack Dee Do Taskmaster & Other Dream Contestants

As Taskmaster’s Series 14 champion is crowned and we discover the Series 15 cast, we draw up our wishlist for future contestants

Jack Dee

Every time Alex Horne is asked about his dream Taskmaster contestant , he says Jack Dee. Every . Single . Time . And yet in fourteen series and two ( soon to be three ) New Year Specials, they still haven’t managed to book Jack Dee for the show.

The Taskmaster team have posted this teaser ahead of tonight’s final, after which we’ll discover the Series 15 cast, so there’s hope yet that Dee is one of these elusive one-man-bands:

Keep your eyes peeled for the official Taskmaster Series 15 cast reveal, after tonight’s show! Here’s a lovely little teaser to whet your appetites… pic.twitter.com/o1sskl4sPi — Taskmaster (@taskmaster) December 1, 2022

While we wait to discover their identities, we’ve got a few names of our own to throw into the ring for potential future Taskmaster contestants/victims:

Richard Ayoade

Richard Ayoade

Richard Ayoade is always at the top of Taskmaster fan’s ‘dream contestant’ lists, and this dream has already been perilously close to becoming reality: Alex Horne revealed that they’d previously almost managed to sign him up but his Travel Man commitments got in the way. There’s no denying it would be an utter treat to see how Ayoade’s unique and brilliant brain would interpret the tasks, so let’s not give up hope just yet.

Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders

Another name on Horne’s list of ‘ones that got away’ is Dawn French. She’s previously been too busy to do the show, but maybe if we squeeze our eyes shut and wish very, very hard, the stars will somehow align and not only will French be free, but her comedy partner Jennifer Saunders can do the show too. Imagine the fantastic shenanigans those two would bring to the group tasks.

Jenny Eclair

Jenny Eclair

She’s bold, outrageously funny and utterly fearless – we think she’d be a scream. She’d probably try and cheat at half the tasks and use her wry charm to get away with it. And she’d make mincemeat out of poor Alex Horne. She might even make mincemeat out of Greg Davies.

travel man david mitchell

David Mitchell

We’ve already been blessed with Victoria Coren-Mitchell taking part in Series 12 (she came last, but it was a good last!), so think how much fun it would be to see how her husband fares in comparison? Besides, there’s not much that could throw the mighty Taskmaster Greg Davies off his stride, but we reckon one of David Mitchell’s famous rants might.

David and Georgia Tennant in Staged

David and Georgia Tennant

Speaking of celebrity couples, what about pitting the brilliant Tennants against each other in the same series? David and Georgia Tennant are both chock full of wit and certainly no stranger to appearing in the same show together, and we feel the competition between them would be entertainingly fierce. Besides, think how happy it would make about a gazillion Doctor Who fans, us very much included.

Big Narstie

Big Narstie

Imagine the pure, blissful chaos! Especially if he was on a series with David Mitchell, as the few times they’ve appeared on a show together it’s been a total delight. We can’t even begin to think how Greg Davies would score whatever Big Narstie decides to do for the tasks, but we’d absolutely love to see him try. It’s Big Narstie’s world and we’re just living in it.

Bill Bailey

Bill Bailey

His sharp, insightful, creative comedy is the perfect mix for the kinds of things Taskmaster can throw at you – we’re thinking beautifully outside-the-box Prize Tasks contributions (probably a live badger or something), totally honest reactions to tasks under pressure, and don’t even get us started on how Bailey would perform in a musical task.

Shaparak Khorsandi

Shaparak Khorsandi

We know Khorsandi can keep just about keep cool under pressure after her appearance on I’m a Celebrity , and her adorable dorky earnestness bodes very well for a Taskmaster appearance. She might end up being one of the series’ more hopeless contestants, but we all know they’re the best ones anyway.

Eddie Izzard

Wit? Check. Brains? Check. Determination? Check. Being an absolutely bloody massive comedy legend? Check, check, check! If anyone can convince Eddie Izzard to take a break from politics to do Taskmaster , we’d be forever grateful. Seriously, please make it happen.

Tom Allen and Meera Syal

Tom Allen and Meera Syal

Pssst: earlier this year, Alex Horne revealed Tom Allen and Meera Syal were also on his shortlist to appear on the show after he attended the British Comedy Awards with them. With Tom’s lightning-speed comebacks and Meera Syal’s all-round ‘comedy national treasure’-ness, we’d pay good money to see them on a Taskmaster lineup together.

Alright, Alex Horne, you’ve got a point. And for what it’s worth, Jack Dee has the Den of Geek seal of approval. As Horne rightly pointed out , he’s got all the makings of a dream contestant: ‘Because I watched him on Celebrity Big Brother , it must have been 10 years ago now, trying to escape by digging a hole with a spoon, which I think… that’s Taskmaster behaviour.’

Watch the Taskmaster finale on Channel 4 at 9pm on Thursday 1st December or stream on All 4

What happened when the mob came for Robert Webb?

Debbie Hayton

Robert Webb is best known for making people laugh, but he conducted himself with poise and grace when he was ambushed by American podcast host Jesse Thorn. Thorn had invited Webb and long-time collaborator David Mitchell to talk about their latest show, and their experiences performing together as a double act over the years. But the programme ended in yet another episode of the transgender inquisition.

This was personal. Thorn told listeners he has two gender non-conforming children, ‘one of who is transgender,’ as he called Webb to account for criticising gender charity Mermaids UK in December 2018.

Back then, Webb wrote a message of support for Times columnist Janice Turner, who had spoken out against ‘dangerous unscientific ideology’ after it emerged Mermaids had been awarded half a million pounds of lottery cash.

It’s clear that Webb’s liberal credentials are impeccable. Yet for Thorn – who sounded uninterested in a nuanced debate on the subject – it wasn’t enough

‘I’ve talked to some really nice trans people here and they have my solidarity,’ wrote Webb, ‘but Mermaids sucks’.

Most popular

James kirkup, j.k. rowling’s glorious refusal to be kind .

travel man david mitchell

The onslaught was predictable. Webb – who later deleted the tweet – later said those words had ‘real-life professional consequences’. But nonetheless he was clear he didn’t regret what he wrote: in a recent interview, he  lamented the fact that ‘you can’t acknowledge that there are going to be competing interests here and there without that becoming, ‘You are a bigot.’’

For all the furious reaction from the mob, many people agreed with Webb. It wasn’t the first time Webb had been brave enough to enter the gender debate. In his 2017 memoir How Not To Be a Boy , he explored the absurd expectations thrust upon men and boys. In the words of one reviewer , ‘he also examines, with enormous poignancy and insight, the damage that can be done when young boys are encouraged to behave in ways supposedly befitting their gender’.

It’s clear that Webb’s liberal credentials are impeccable. Yet for Thorn – who sounded uninterested in a nuanced debate on the subject – it wasn’t enough. After pointedly ignoring what Webb had to say on the matter, he fired his own opinions into the discussion. The subject of the last five minutes of the podcast wasn’t Webb – and certainly not David Mitchell who had been relegated to the status of startled bystander – but Thorn himself. He announced it was ‘kind of scary for me’ because his elder child ‘was transgender’ and came out to him when he was in kindergarten. Thorn went on to promote a US-based organisation that he claimed, ‘does many of the same things that Mermaids does’.

I may be transgender, but my feelings about Mermaids chime with Webb rather than Thorn. In my view, Mermaids’ unwillingness to properly question a child’s self-declared gender identity is deeply troubling. Children should be free to express themselves, without the burden of sexist expectations, but we must be honest with them: they cannot change sex. Otherwise, gender-non-conforming children might be led to believe they need unnecessary medical treatments that could mean lifelong medication and infertility.

Thorn’s final interrogation of Webb was unpleasant and uncomfortable, like a contemptuous headmaster chastising a student. Webb weathered it admirably, but the person I worry about most in this sorry saga is Thorn’s child. According to Thorn:

‘Our kid is nine. Puberty is on the horizon. This year for the first time she saw a doctor who specialises in adolescent medicine for trans kids. We’re so grateful we live in LA and have access to caring medical pros who are up on the latest research and standards of care.’

I sympathise with Thorn’s child, but I’m deeply worried for them. Puberty blockers and cross sex-hormones are no cure for gender non-conforming behaviour.

As for Thorn, he certainly didn’t want to listen to Webb, a man who struggled with expectations of masculinity and even wrote a book about it. And Webb’s response – perhaps inevitably – will be to learn from his ‘mistake’ and never again speak out on the transgender debate. For those of us who value dissenting voices, that would be a great pity. But who could blame him?

Travel Far Enough and You’ll Meet Yourself

Today’s quote for inspiration and creativity:.

Travel far enough, you meet yourself.  – David Mitchell

The other day I met a stranger while visiting a meditation garden in Encinitas, California. It was once of those serendipitous encounters that was brought together through a like-energy connection (your vibe attracts your tribe, right?). We got to talking and Anthony and I suggested that we all get dinner in town. As it turned out our new friend was headed to the same cafe.

During dinner, the topic of travel came up. It was clear that each of us felt a strong sense of reverence for the power of travel and how it truly can be an enlightening experience if – we all agreed – you seek human connections in the places you visit.

I think a strong argument can be made in favor of travel being the greatest form of education available to humans. It without question stirs curiosity, diminishes prejudices and creates an appreciation and love for other cultures and the people who make each country so vibrantly unique.

After dinner I got to thinking about how travel has done all of the aforementioned for me and perhaps even more. I began reflecting on the first 14 or so years I spent traveling to different places around the world and how my mind was opened to the vastness and beauty of this planet. During this period of time it was more of an outside-of-myself learning experience. More recently though, I’ve noticed that travel has become a means to an inward journey . I find that I crave silence quite often, so that I can feel my intuition and learn more about what my heart is saying. I’m realizing that travel is providing me with the respite and clarity necessary to learn more about who I am.

When I travel, it’s actually much easier for me to keep to a daily routine. Time is mine – I wake for sunrise, watch our great star levitate above the horizon, take a few deep breaths and simply enjoy the beauty. I have time to journal, to walk and practice yoga, to explore with curiosity, to eat mindfully and with pleasure to love and to pray. I have time to be kind to myself by doing things I enjoy. Most importantly, I have time to sit still and marvel at something. In these moments of stillness, I hear my heart and I begin to heal from old wounds, creating an opening to let joy and contentment flood in. I gain clarity on situations that seem murky and impossible to navigate. By doing this I can be more present for the people I love and I also replenish my energy so that I can continue to give of myself and serve others.

Today I urge you to travel far enough so that you meet yourself. We all deserve the privilege of knowing who we truly are.

With love & gratitude,

Who is David Mitchell? Man Is Going Viral For Helping South African Students Over 2 Decades Ago!!!

Do angels walk among us? A video on TikTok has sparked a conversation about a man named "David Mitchell" who quietly helped students all over South Africa over 2 decades ago.

A video on TikTok has sparked a conversation about a man named “David Mitchell” who quietly helped students all over South Africa over 2 decades ago.

Johannesburg, South Africa (24 July 2021) – A man named “Bongo Muffin” uploaded a video to TikTok, which is going viral… regaling a story about a stranger named David Mitchell who changed his life more than 20 years ago.

Bongo has spent forever trying to find the man to thank him, and since uploading the video, others are now coming forward to say that the same man – David Mitchell – helped them too. Who is David Mitchell? Well, South Africans are starting to believe that he may have been a real-life angel.

Bongo was a third-year university student when he met David Mitchell. At the time, he did not have enough money to get by and was in the “deepest pit of depression”. He had also just lost his grandmother, who was the only source of income in his family, but more importantly, was also his pillar of emotional support.

It was that day that Bongo decided to drop out of university. The student collected all of his belongings and made his way through the campus to say goodbye to his friends.

It was then that he bumped into a “middle-aged-white-man” who initiated a conversation. The man weirdly asked him about his studies and, more importantly, why he had decided to drop out.

Bongo explained that he just didn’t have the funds and would need at least R5,000 to be okay.

The man immediatly wrote a cheque for Bongo for the exact amount, climbed into his car, and drove away. The student looked down and saw David Mitchell’s name on the cheque. He was left perplexed at why a stranger would just help him, for “no reason”. It was all very sudden, and the entire engagement was a bit surreal.

Bongo has spent the last 20 years trying to track down David Mitchell but has had very little success.

His video was only uploaded 20 hours ago, but it has sparked a conversation about “David Mitchell”, who quietly also helped others over 2 decades ago.

David Mitchell has broken his silence after his wife Victoria confirmed they had welcomed their second child together.

The comedian, 49, and his TV presenter wife, 51, already share eight-year-old daughter Barbara and have now welcomed a baby girl called June Violet.

Victoria took to Twitter to confirm the news on Wednesday after keeping her pregnancy a secret, and David has now broken his silence.

Responding to a comment on Twitter congratulating the couple, David wrote: 'Thank you! We're very happy.'

Victoria announced the birth of their second child in a Twitter post where she lightheartedly joked about her Halloween costume.

After sharing a snap of herself in a red cloak on October 31 she followed up by writing: 'Many people are assuming my tweet yesterday was a Halloween costume.

'Not at all; last week I had a baby and nothing currently fits me except cloaks. Luckily, Only Connect is a pre-record. Happy All Saints  Day!'.

The news was later confirmed in The Times with an announcement which read:  'Mitchell on 26th October 2023 to Victoria and David, a daughter, June Violet sister to Barbara.'

Professional poker player Victoria is best known for hosting BBC2's quiz show Only Connect, while David starred at socially awkward Mark in cult classic sitcom Peep Show.

Racing to the comments fans and famous friends were quick to send their best wishes, with Countdown's Rachel Riley writing: 'Mozel tov, hope you are both doing well'.

With someone else saying:  'Congratulations, I'm sure everyone is happy to hear some lovely news right now and another Coren Mitchell in the world is certainly that!'.

While a third quipped: 'Congratulations, I had a baby 37 years ago and nothing currently fits'.

Another wrote: 'Amazing news. Congratulations to you and David. And best wishes for the future'.

And: 'Many congratulations, a new baby how wonderful'.

Victoria kept her pregnancy a secret, but in recent weeks, she hinted at her upcoming maternity leave as she cryptically tweeted about taking a 'little sabbatical' away from her work as a TV host.

She told how she had pre-recorded some TV shows, including her hosting gig on Only Connect, as she shared her last TV column in The Telegraph before her break.

Victoria wrote: 'My TV column today is the last in a while - I'm taking a little sabbatical, though I HAVE recorded some TV shows for people to shout at in my absence. For my last pre-break column I've written about Blankety Blank and my new friend Lozza.'

She also made few public appearances during the later part of her pregnancy and was last seen out with David at the V&A's 2023 summer party on June 21.

Just weeks before giving birth, Victoria also appeared as a guest host on Have I Got News for You but strategically managed to conceal her pregnancy on air.

David, who wed Victoria in 2012,  previously describing their first child Barbara as 'the best human being that has ever been born' .

He said in a chat on The Jonathan Ross Show in 2018: 'Unfortunately, there is nothing like having a tiny child who's safety you are responsible for to make you worry.

'You really don't want the world to spin into the sun and explode. You thought you didn't want it before but you really don't want it [after having a child.]

'That is the real downside of parenthood, and I suppose any form of love, is it makes you fear more… I would say love is not a stress reduction exercise is it?

'What you want is a long period of bland contentment… I'm a family man. I've made bad choices and I am constantly worried.'

The pair met at a showbiz party in 2007, and even though David admitted he was instantly smitten with the fellow writer and broadcaster, three years went by before they actually got together.

Victoria was in a relationship with someone else at the time and turned down the comedian's advances.

In his autobiography Back Story, David spoke out about the agony of not being with the love of his life for those years, and how it led him to midnight walks in the park and frequent visits to the pub.

'I was hopelessly in love. I told no one about it,' the star discloses in his book. 'I didn't tell my closest friends or my parents of the enormous sadness that overshadowed my life.'

While she is now a happy mother of two, Victoria has candidly admitted that in her twenties she 'never had that point' when her friends yearned for kids.

Speaking in a 2012 interview  Victoria confessed her lifestyle just hadn't 'been right' for a family.

'I never had that point that a lot of my friends went through in their early to mid-twenties when they decided that they absolutely wanted children. But I am slightly obsessed with children,' she told The Standard, adding: 'I absolutely still might.'

T20 World Cup Super 8: Rohit guides India to semis with victory over Australia

 alt=

Gros Islet (Saint Lucia): Skipper Rohit Sharma played an innings to remember as India marched into the semifinals of the T20 World Cup with a 24-run win over Australia in their last Super Eights fixture here on Monday. Rohit combined brute force with elegance in his 92 off 41 balls as India amassed 205 for five after Australia opted to bowl on a batting beauty. In reply, Australia ended at 181 for seven.

Staring at an early exit from the competition, Australia showed their familiar fighting spirit in the run chase via skipper Mitchell Marsh (37 off 28), who was back among the runs, and India's nemesis Travis Head (76 off 43), who played a blinder in the ODI World Cup final last year. The trio of Kuldeep Yadav (2/24), Jasprit Bumrah (1/29) and Arshdeep Singh (3/37) eventually kept the Australians at bay. India finished as group toppers.

After their second loss in three games, Australia have left their fate in the hands of Afghanistan who take on Bangladesh later on Monday and are also in running for the second semifinal spot from Group 1. India's third win in as many games in Super Eights gave them a date with defending champions England in the second semifinal in Guyana on Thursday.

Cricket-WC-2024-T20-AUS-IND

Australia, as expected, showed plenty of fight in the chase before fizzling out in the death overs. The highlight of the 86-run partnership between Head and Marsh was their exemplary ball-striking ability.

While Marsh enthralled with short-arm pulls into the stands, Head targeted the straight boundary. The southpaw smoked Hardik Pandya for a flat six down the ground, reminiscent of his ruthlessness in Ahmedabad on the ill-fated night of November 19.

Amid the high-quality hitting from Marsh and Head, Kuldeep's bowling stood out. One of his wickets, though, was purely down to the brilliance of Axar Patel who took a one-handed stunner on the jump at deep square leg to send back Marsh.

With 65 needed off 30 balls and Head in the middle, the match hung in balance before MVP Jasprit Bumrah returned to remove the opener with a slower ball and Australia could not press on thereafter.

Earlier, on the best batting surface of the tournament, Australia put India in to bat and Rohit made the most of the conditions with a sublime knock comprising seven fours and eights sixes including a recording-extending 200th in the format.

Cricket-WC-2024-T20-AUS-IND

It was the start of something special when Rohit flicked Mitchell Starc for four in the first over of the game. Virat Kohli (0) at the other end mistimed a pull off Josh Hazlewood in the following over to be caught in the deep.

Walking the talk once again, Rohit never took the foot off the pedal and went hammer and tongs against Starc, whose second over yielded as many as 29 runs, his most expensive in the format. The first two sixes in the over came via delightful aerial drives over extra cover before he smashed one in the cow corner region. The fourth maximum of the over came through a mishit that went all the way behind the stumps.

Rohit did the bulk of the damage in his 87-run stand with number three Rishabh Pant (15 off 14), who welcomed leg-spinner Adam Zampa into the attack with a six over long-on. Australia's trump card went wicket-less. Another memorable shot of Rohit's innings was the down-on-one-knee six over deep mid-wicket off Pat Cummins in the latter's opening over.

Credit must go to India for not allowing any bowler to settle into a rhythm. Rohit brought up his fifty at end of the fifth over with a single and that was also the fastest of the tournament. Rohit unleashed a six over extra cover when Marcus Stoinis came into the attack in the eighth over. Such was the authority of Rohit's innings that he could select his spot against all the bowlers of repute.

It could have been a well-deserved 100 but Starc came back to remove the India skipper with a yorker.

Suryakumar Yadav (31 off 15), Hardik Pandya (27 not out off 17) and Shivam Dube (28 off 22) also played their part but India could not make the most of the last five overs, scoring only 43 runs for the loss of one wicket.

Even as his colleagues leaked runs, Hazlewood seemed to be bowling on a different pitch, conceding only 14 runs while taking one wicket in his four overs.

Iowa DOT: Travel ‘strongly discouraged’ in northwest Iowa counties

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Multiple road closures on state and federal highways have authorities urging drivers to skip inessential travel.

Widespread flooding of rivers and streams in northwest Iowa has caused major highways to become blocked by the rising waters, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. Officials said that travel was strongly discouraged due to the potentially dangerous conditions in Lyon, Sioux, O’Brien, Clay, Emmet, Dickinson, and Plymouth Counties.

Drivers should check local road conditions before venturing out. If a roadway is flooded, do not drive through it and find another way around. Several inches of flowing water is enough to lift a vehicle and carry it, potentially putting you in danger. Remember the saying: Turn around, don’t drown.

Broad portions of northwest Iowa, southeast South Dakota, and southern Minnesota are under Flood Warnings after 8 to 16 inches of rain fell over the last few days. No new rainfall is expected through Monday.

Joe Lycett’s own website describes him as ‘an incredibly right-wing comedian, painter, filmmaker, sculptor, television presenter, poet, gardener, dietician, radio presenter, tuning fork, Fiat Punto manual and queer.’  He is, almost certainly, some of those things.

Joe has been performing stand-up comedy since 2007 and recently finished his 3rd sold-out UK tour, More! More! More! How Do You Lycett? How Do You Lycett?

Joe was the host of BBC One’s Great British Sewing Bee. His passion for art has seen him host the BBC’s coverage of the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2022 and appear on Grayson's Art Club.  He’s also hosted shows on BBC Radio 1, Radio 2 and Radio 4.  He has appeared on Taskmaster, QI, 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Room 101 and many more.

Joe’s also the host of his own award winning consumer comedy hybrid show Joe Lycett’s Got Your Back. In 2021’s Joe Lycett Versus the Oil Giant, he took on Shell over greenwashing, winning  an Edinburgh TV Festival award in the process.  And in 2022, in Joe Lycett vs Beckham, he took on the famous footballer over his endorsement of the World Cup in Qatar, grabbing front page headlines in the UK.

A proud Brummie, Joe was chosen to take part in the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in Birmingham in 2022.

But all of this was just the warm up to Joe becoming Travel Man, taking over from Richard Ayoade in 2019.  Joe’s debut as the suitcase towing travel guru was delayed by the pandemic, finally hitting the screen with a Christmas Special in 2021.  This was followed by a first series in 2022 which won him an RTS award for Best Presenter.  The second series is currently on air, with a third and fourth currently in production .
