How to pack makeup in carry-on luggage: 2024 TSA travel size rules [VIDEO]

If you are taking a flight and not planning to check a bag, packing makeup in carry-on luggage (as well as toiletries) can seem like a complicated task. But if you follow the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) 3-1-1 rule (or the 2023 TSA makeup rules) it is fairly simple to pack makeup in your carry-on bag.

TSA’s 3-1-1 Rule: How to pack makeup in carry-on luggage

The TSA’s travel size rule says you can bring a 1 – quart -sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the checkpoint. The containers need to be 3.4 ounces or smaller and placed in the resealable clear bag. Each passenger is only allowed one bag .

The TSA 3-11 rule allows you to bring your makeup and toiletries in: 1 bag, which is 1-quart, which contain bottles that are 3.4 ounces or smaller .

The items that need to fit within the 1-ounce bag include things like:

• Liquid foundation
• Conditioner
• Liquid soap
• Tooth paste
• Dry shampoo
• Anything else fitting into the categories

Powders and pencils are not included within the TSA travel size rule. The bag only needs to hold your makeup or toiletries of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes — everything else can be packed as normal luggage.

According to the TSA: “Makeup in a solid or powder form is allowed in carry-on and checked bags with no quantity or size limitations. However, when packed in carry-on bags, makeup in a liquid, lotion, gel, paste or creamy form, must be in containers that are 3.4 ounces or less. You can take as many travel-sized liquids as you can comfortably fit into one quart-sized, zip-top bag. One liquids bag is allowed per passenger in carry-on bags. We don’t limit the size or quantity of liquids in checked bags.”

Pack all non-liquid makeup separately

It’s easy to think that most of your makeup, including things like lipstick, might be included in the TSA’s rule. But the rule only applies to liquids. So pack your liquid foundation along with your travel-sized soap, shampoo, and lotion, and pack the rest of your makeup separately (including powders, brushes, and pencils) — you will not need to take these out of your carry-on bag.

You can then decide if you want to place your non-liquid makeup in your carry-on or in your checked bag. But if you want to keep your liquid makeup with you during the flight, make sure you pull the plastic bag out when going through security, according to the TSA’s rules.

TSA shampoo rules

The rules for packing shampoo and conditioner for a flight are the same as they are for makeup, toothpaste, and any other liquids or gels. You can pack as many in your carry on as you’d like, but they must individually be in containers that are 3.4 ounces or less, and must then all fit within a one-quart bag.

You can pack as much shampoo and conditioner as you’d like, in whatever bottle sizes you’d like, in your checked luggage.

TSA deodorant rules

Solid and powder deodorant are allowed in unlimited quantities in both your checked and carry-on luggage. They are not considered gels when asking if you can bring deodorant on a plane.

Can you pack your razor for a flight?

Yes you can pack your razor in your carry-on luggage, to an extent.

The TSA now allows sharp items in cosmetics bags, with some exceptions.

In terms of bringing razors on an airplane in your carry-on bag, they allow the following:

• Scissor blades must be no longer than four inches
• Safety razors : Safety razors are not allowed as a carry on. Blades must be placed in checked luggage.
• Disposable razors : These razors are acceptable to bring in a carry on.
• Electric razors : Electric razors are acceptable to bring in a carry on.
• Tweezers and nail clippers are acceptable.

Make it easy on yourself

Sometimes it’s just easier to purchase the items when you get to your destination. Things like shampoo, soap, and razors can be found at any neighborhood Walgreens or CVS — and many are even available at your hotel. Or even better, check a bag.

If you know the rules before you arrive at the airport, it will make it easier on you — as well as everyone in line behind you.

But hey, here's hoping that changes very soon as inclusivity becomes more mainstream .

For now, try making this hack your new travel buddy. But before you do, Lehmkuhl offers some words of caution: Make sure the lids are screwed on tight so they don’t come undone due to cabin pressure. She also recommends labeling each case so you know what's in them. The flight attendant says this isn't a situation where you want to wing it.

Before you finish packing to head to the airport, always double-check your carry-on bags and make sure you don’t have any bottles or other items that don’t comply with the TSA liquids rule, (known as the 3-1-1 rule).   

By the time the TSA finds that expensive bottle of perfume or lotion in your bag, it’s too late and you’ll have to say goodbye and hand it over to get through security and board your plane on time.  It’s happened to my family many times and could easily have been avoided with a quick check before leaving.

To help make sure this doesn’t happen to you, we’ve created this article that will tell you everything you need to know about the TSA liquids rule, including how much liquid is 100 ml, what are travel-sized bottles, what is considered a liquid, etc. Basically, all the stuff that could get confiscated when making your way through airport security.

What’s the TSA Liquids Rule?

The TSA liquids rule states that you can bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, creams, gels, and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the airport security checkpoint. However, you are limited to containers that are travel sized and contain less than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) per item.

Items that are in packages or bottles larger than 100 milliliters (or 3.4 ounces) will have to go in your checked luggage .  In addition to larger liquids, any liquid that is more than 3.4 oz or 100 ml and is not contained in a secure, tamper-proof bag must be packed in your checked luggage.

Each liquid must be in a 3.4-ounce or less container (“3”), all containers must be placed inside one clear quart-sized plastic bag (“1”), and each passenger is only allowed one plastic bag (“1”).

There are 2 exceptions to the TSA 3-1-1 Liquids Rule

• Medications, and
• Infant/Child nourishment

Medications larger than 100ml

TSA allows larger-sized packages of medical liquids, gels, and aerosols in your carry-on. This also includes medical accessories such as freezer bags, pumps, syringes, etc. These items do not have to be in a plastic zip lock bag, but you will have to declare these items to TSA officers at the checkpoint prior to inspection.

Formula, Breast Milk, and Juice

Formula, breast milk, and juice for infants and toddlers are allowed through the security checkpoint. These can be in quantities greater than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters and are allowed in carry-on baggage.

Similar to medications, just inform the TSA officer of what you have and remove the items from your carry-on bag so they can be screened separately from the rest of your belongings.

Ice packs, freezer bags, frozen gel packs, and other accessories required to cool formula and breast milk are allowed in your carry-on bag.

The TSA PreCheck Program allows registered travelers the ability to go through expedited screening lines at over 200 participating U.S. airports with over 80 participating airlines. Once you are approved in the program you don’t need to remove your 3-1-1 liquids from your bag.

Actually, you can avoid removing any of the following items during the screening process:

• 3-1-1 compliant bag
• Light jacket/Sport coat/outerwear
• Laptop / iPad from bag

To apply for PreCheck, go to tsa.gov/precheck . From here you can enroll and make an appointment online or walk in at any one of over 380 enrollment centers . It can take up to 30 days to obtain a TSA PreCheck known traveler number.

What does TSA consider a liquid?

According to TSA guidelines, any substance that is free-flowing or viscous is considered a liquid. This includes liquids, aerosols, pastes, creams, and gels.

According to the TSA, “Makeup in a solid or powder form is allowed in carry-on and checked bags with no quantity or size limitations. However, when packed in carry-on bags, makeup in a liquid, lotion, gel, paste, or creamy form, must be in containers that are 3.4 ounces or less. You can take as many travel-sized liquids as you can comfortably fit into one quart-sized, zip-top bag.”

When it comes to makeup, the following are some examples of liquid cosmetics:

• Nail polish,
• Moisturizers,
• Foundation,
• Mascara, etc.

How much is 3.4 oz?

Now that you understand the basic concepts of the TSA liquid rule, it may help to have an idea of what constitutes 3.4 oz or 100 ml, since most people don’t naturally know how big a 3.4-ounce container or a 100 ml bottle is.

So if you’re wondering exactly how much is 3.4 oz or how big is a 100 ml bottle, we will walk through that for you here.

3.4 ounces (oz) converts to 96.388 milliliters (ml). For purposes of simplicity, the TSA rounds this up to 100 ml

Most of the toiletries you would bring on a trip come in travel-sized packages that can be bought at any drug store or grocery store. These travel-sized items are typically 3 ounces (90 ml) and generally provide enough lotion, shampoo, or toothpaste for a 5-day trip. If you’ll be traveling longer, you may need to stock up on a couple of extra bottles or plan on purchasing more upon arrival at your destination.

100 milliliters (ml) converts to 3.3814 ounces (oz). For purposes of simplicity, the TSA rounds this up to 100 ml

100 milliliters (ml) converts to .422675 cups, so it’s just under 1/2 cup.

A 100 ml bottle is fairly small. To give you a visual, look at the image below that shows a 500 ml water bottle vs. a 100 ml spray bottle. The 100 ml bottle is about 3 inches tall and the water bottle is about 8 inches tall.

Hopefully, this guide will give you a better idea of what the TSA considers a liquid and what size they will let you bring on your carry-on. Knowing this information in advance can save a lot of headaches at the airport!

3-1-1: TSA Rules for Makeup

The 311 liquid rule applies to all liquid and semi-liquid items you pack in your carry-on luggage – including gels and thicker makeup liquids. Put small items in 3.4 ounce containers in a clear quart-sized bag. You can bring one of these bags in your carry-on.

The 3 1 1 rule for makeup is the same. You can take liquid makeup on a plane, but these items don’t get their own bag, so know  how to pack your toiletries like a pro .

Does Makeup Count as a Liquid?

Not all makeup is the same. Mascara is considered a liquid; makeup wipes are not a liquid in TSA’s rulebook.

• Cream Blush – Cream blush is a liquid to TSA.
• Liquid Concealer – Liquid concealer is a liquid and must follow the 311 liquid rule.
• Lip Balm/Gloss/Lipstick – Lip balm/gloss/lipstick is not considered liquid.
• Liquid/Gel Eyeliner – These are liquid.
• Liquid/Gel Highlighter - These are liquid.
• Liquid/Gel Cream Eye Shadow - These are liquid.

How to Pack Makeup for a Flight

How much makeup you can bring on the plane is limited. Knowing how to pack makeup in a carry on helps ensure you have enough space for everything you need.

Separate Liquids frim Non-Liquids

With only one quart-sized bag to fill, use that space for your liquids. This makes it easy to quickly show your liquids bag if asked by the TSA.

Long before you begin packing, plan your outfits. Coordinate colors and styles to minimize the makeup necessary for your trip. Bring items that have multiple purposes and are truly necessary.

Decant Products into Travel-Size Containers

If your favorite product is too big, pour some into a smaller container that follows what the 3-1-1 rule says. Choose something durable and spill-proof to prevent mishaps.

Place Products into Clear, Quart-sized Bag

You may want to opt for something a little sturdier than a Ziploc that still meets TSA guidelines. Remember, quart size is the largest bag allowed; you can take something smaller. 

Pack Strategically

Lip balm and hand sanitizer are likely to be used during the flight. Since they're not considered liquids (TSA allows up to 12 ounces of hand sanitizer), you can keep these in a pocket or easy-to-access compartment.

Secure Your Bag

Tightly sealing each container helps prevent messes. Some travelers wrap the caps with plastic wrap or tape for additional security.

Going on vacation is all fun and games until you get to the packing portion of the trip. At that point, it quickly becomes a game of “What can I bring?” and “What must I sadly leave behind?” 

Traveling with makeup is particularly challenging, especially with TSA’s rules on liquid sizes and the propensity for your most prized products to break or leak. You’ve also got to think about things like climate variation and how your skin might react while also trying to keep your regimen somewhat normal so your skin doesn’t freak. 

With practice and planning, though, you can get really good at editing down all your beauty essentials without over or under-packing. To help you cover all the bases when it comes to traveling with makeup, we asked experts to share their best tips. 

Invest in a Great Makeup Case

First thing’s first: You’ve got to have a great place to store your beauty loot when traveling with makeup. Look for a bag that’s big enough to house all your essentials, is leak-proof, keeps you organized , and is easy to clean, advises Sydney Morgan , beauty content creator. Choose Cosmetics Bags That Serve Double Duty

If chosen well, your makeup bag can be so much more. "Some can double as small clutch or evening purse in a pinch," says Anne McAlpin, packing expert at PackItUp.com . "I love the 'free' ones from cosmetic specials like Clinique and Lancôme. Bright colored bags make it easy to find your makeup in your bag." 

Put Makeup Brushes & Tools in Their Own Bag

Makeup brushes are an investment, so it only makes sense to look after them well. “I keep my tools in a dedicated case,” notes Jenny Patinkin , professional makeup artist and founder of Jenny Patinkin Eco-Luxe Beauty Tools . This helps protect the bristles and keeps things more sanitary, too. To save even more space, choose a makeup bag that has a compartment you can dedicate specifically to tools and brushes.

Keep a Few Items in Your Purse

Lost luggage happens every once in a while, so travel with confidence by having a cosmetic backup plan, says Brittany Lo , a professional makeup artist and founder of Beia. She says, “Always keep two to three essentials with you in your purse, just in case your luggage doesn’t make it or in case you need to reapply before you get the chance to unpack.” For example, a lightweight BB cream or foundation, cream blush, and mascara. When in doubt, identify your “desert island” essentials and pack those. 

Opt For Multitasking Makeup

Saving space is a must when traveling with makeup, so take advantage of multitasking products. “I do like to steamline when I travel,” notes Patinkin. “[For example], Packing a bronzer that can double as contour, a buildable cheek color, and a buildable foundation for simple daytime application or more dramatic evening looks, one four-pan eyeshadow palette that can be used a lot of different ways, and keeping as few brushes with me as possible.” 

Don’t Switch Up Your Routine Too Much

It’s tempting to pack all those tiny, travel products since they’re conveniently sized, but switching up your beauty routine too much isn’t ideal. 

“Your body likes consistency,” notes Matthew Waitesmith, a professional makeup artist with Artis . “If you mostly maintain your same makeup routine while traveling, your body will be less likely to overreact to all the environmental changes involved with travel.” Not to mention, a chill vacation isn’t necessarily a great time to experiment with a tricky new felt liner or foundation formula. You want reliability and ease. 

Underfill to Reduce the Risk of Leaks

Leaking liquid makeup is not just a big mess—it can mean you lose a lot of your product, too. McAlpin has a little trick that has kept her leak-free.

"Only fill liquids three-quarters full, then squeeze out the air and secure the lid. A change in air pressure can cause liquids to expand, creating leaks." By not filling it to the brim, you leave room and reduce the chance of leaks. (But pack it inside a resealable plastic bag just in case!)

Decant Larger Items

Whether you’re checking a bag or sticking to a carry-on, it’s wise to consolidate your products to save space and minimize the potential for messes. If any of your liquid products are over 3.4 ounces—the TSA cutoff size—decant them in a travel-size container. Alternatively, buy the travel-sized versions of your faves, Lo suggests. When you run out of the travel-size product, you can refill the packaging with your full-size product. 

Protect Delicate Makeup

The pain of seeing your favorite powder products broken is real. Avoid the distress by packing delicate items very well. You can do so with a fine bubble wrap (avoid anything too bulky). It also helps to “sandwich” your makeup bag, says Morgan. 

“Put your makeup bag in the middle of your suitcase with clothes surrounding it,” she says. “This sounds super funny, but it is the best way to keep things from shifting around and breaking. I typically like to put it in the middle with clothes underneath and on all sides. This has helped to avoid breakage.”

Consider the Climate

While you don’t want to completely switch up your makeup routine, do take the climate into account. For example, if you’re heading somewhere really humid or plan to splash around in the ocean, swap in some waterproof makeup. Or if it’s going to be dry or hot, pack a face mist that helps set your makeup and keep your skin looking dewy all day.

Bring A Couple “Special Occasion” Items

Along with your go-to makeup and skincare products, Waitesmith recommends packing a few makeup items that you associate with special occasions, such as a bold lipstick color or a pretty eyeshadow quad. He says, “You may want to be a bit more extravagant with your makeup colors or intensity to celebrate the special environment—like for a candlelight dinner.” 

Pack a Compact Lighted Mirror

“The lighting in your hotel or other accommodation mirror is unfamiliar, so it can be hard to judge whether the color or texture of the product you're using feels like it's flattering,” notes Patinkin. She says that a lighted makeup mirror can help squash this issue real fast. Choose one that’s slender and stands up on its own or has suction cups that adhere to a flat surface mirror. 

Think Vertical

McAlpin swears by hanging-style personal care kits. "Many European and boutique hotels have minimal counter space, so these bags are great for keeping essentials close at hand without items falling off pedestal sinks and breaking on tile floors."

Repurpose Containers

Travel-specific containers are great, but you can get creative with what you use. "I use contact lens holders for small amounts of primer, eye moisturizer, etc.," McAlpin says. "Just label it with permanent marker on the lid."

Find Ways to Minimize Liquids

If you're traveling carry-on only, your space for liquids is limited.

While solid beauty and makeup products have become an important part of travel packing, McAlpin has some other ideas for carrying on her favorites. For fragrance, for instance, you can soak cotton balls with fragrance and pack in small leak-proof containers.

I don’t need to use a large quantity and they usually come in a heavy glass bottle so decanting them saves weight too. I’ve found these to be the best travel containers for small quantities.

If you need to bring toiletries like soaked cotton rounds or makeup wipes, some TFG readers use these leakproof condiment containers which have a wider diameter. A super creative option that works really well! 

Use a capsule wardrobe to pack light but create many outfits.

Set of 3/5/10/15/20 Clear Cosmetic Pots

• How to Use Them: Use them for makeup and beauty products that you won’t need often and to store individual products that you want to take in your purse. (A stack won’t do so well thrown around in your day bag or purse.)
• When to Use Them: Anytime. These travel containers  can store your bath products on short trips or on longer trips for items you won’t use often.
• At home: Have you ever used a concealer container with a pump that gives you more than what you need? Stop wasting product. You can decant the liquid or gel into one of these containers so you only get a dab of what you’ll use.

I like using the  5 gram size  for concealer, eye cream, and face scrub while I use the larger  20 gram size  for toothpaste, foundation, or face wash

This is my ultimate secret for fitting various toiletries into minimal space. Stackable pots will work extremely well for women who use a variety of different beauty products or have an extensive skincare routine.

• How to Use Them: Use one stack for shampoo/conditioner/body wash and another stack for face moisturizer/body moisturizer/sunblock
• When to Use Them: Use this strategy for weekend trips and take just what you need or if you have a longer trip and plan on buying products as you go – use the stacks for products that last a long time such as foundation , eye cream, or face moisturizer.
• At home: Use these travel containers to store jewelry, and crafts, or to consolidate half-empty products and make more room on the shelves.

Great article on decanting for B longer trips, best trip n I’ve ever B learned!

I love the idea of using smaller containers for toiletries. My favorites are the chap stick containers and the contact lens cases. The contact lens cases are great because they stay closed and never leak. I’ve actually put clear gel Secret deodorant/antiperspirant in a chap stick container and it was enough for a 10 day trip! I am able to fit all my daily products and make up in my toiletry bag with no issues. I also have a set in my 5th wheel so I am always ready to take off in a moments notice! I love the idea of decanting products into the small pots. I was having trouble fitting everything in my 3-1-1 bag. After reading this post I ordered some different size pots to use for my facial moisturizer, hair styling cream, cream blush etc. it’s amazing how much space was saved by using these pots!

I decanted my spf facial moisturizer into a pot and when I was using up the last of it, I noticed the plastic had changed texture. Has this happened to anyone else? Should I be worried about continuing to decant into this container?

Hi Lindsey, I have personally never had an issue with this so I am not sure if you should carry on using the same container. I think this has happed to a few of our other readers though. Same thing happened to me. I read online in another forum that it’s the sunscreen that reacts with the plastic. I read suggestions that it won’t react with nalgene plastic (I have not tried this personally yet). They sell these in travel size at the Container Store and on Amazon.

Regarding packing liquids: I always use plastic wrap under the top. If it’s an “oily or greasy” type product, I use a snack size ziplock bag to hold each. I either use ziplocks in addition to cubes when I pack, or I take an assortment of them so I can easily pack for a day trip or overnight stay without having to take a large bag with me.

Does anyone know where to find lightweight swimsuits without the awful foam cups they all seem to have? I am trying ( rather desperately!) to find a suit that will pack flat! I could also do without all the multiple heavy layers that most suits seem to have these days. HELP please??? Connie

Hi Alex, I finally found those swimsuits at “ Title Nine” last year. I think the weight was about half of those I’d tried before. I ended up with all mix and match…with black or blue bottoms (one is the paddleboard short), and two colorful tops. All work very well!

Connie, have you looked at Lands End?? Their “tugless tank” swimsuit is just the ticket…comes with or without cups. Otherwise, if you want a simple one-piece suit, check out a sporting goods store for a Speedo or Arena swimsuit. During the warm months, Costco often has a large quantity of these suits for sale.

How do you label the containers? From one trip to the next, I do not remember what is in each container. Everything I have tried gets wet and peels off.

I have a Brother P-Touch labeler. It has several size choices for printing labels. The trick to keep the print from rubbing off is to put a piece of wide packing tape (like scotch tape, but wider) over the label. It works for anything, except items going directly into the shower.

I use a sharpie on the outside or top of the lid. Once I’m back home, I wipe it off with some rubbing alcohol.

I’m a nurse, and I use the white paper tape meant for wound dressing. It’s a great all-purpose tape for travel. You can write on it with a sharpie, and still read the words even after it has been in the shower. The tape is easy to remove when you are done. I normally keep a sharpie and a roll of paper tape in my kit instead of duct tape. Check your Dollar Store for paper tape in the medical section.

Hi, I usually use the P-touch since you can make the letters very small. I also leave a bit of extra tape on each end so the ends overlap on round bottles and pots. Hope this helps…. Connie

This is sort of a random question, but have you ever successfully packed coconut oil without having it leak and get your other toiletry bottles all greasy? If so, what containers have you used? I only need a very small container for it – it’s my face moisturizer and I use only a tiny amount every day. I’ve tried small pots, and I’m not sure what brand they are as I got them as a gift a long time ago, but they have leaked every time no matter how tightly I screw on the lid. Recently, I tried using a plastic travel bottle – the type you would normally use for shampoo – and just unscrewing the lid to dip my finger in… it only leaked a little, but it’s way too large, and it’s also not exactly convenient to have to try to stick your finger into one of those bottles when the oil is solid, haha.

Any thoughts on pots or other small containers that would be easy to access but leak-proof even when the oil melts?

Hi Joanna, I use the small pots featured in this post to travel with coconut oil. However, I have the cold pressed kind that’s in solid form not liquid. A tip is to place saran wrap between the pot and the lid – it keeps liquids from leaking 😉

get it as unrefined as possible and just freeze it in a gootube use the saran wrap trick. By the time it melts you will most likely be at the hotel if you pack it right. I made it on a 16 hour flight in a hot September (From Atlanta) this way. It was 75% solid when I used it the next morning, no leaks.

I have a few empty half-ounce bottles which originally held hand sanitizer. They have a secure top, and are tiny. If you were to warm the oil slightly, it would melt enough to decant into the container. Coconut oil is liquid at body temperature. If the oil is solid, you could melt it by running water from the hot tap over the bottle. I normallly use a one-ounce Nalgene bottle from the mountain supply store. I always use a piece of plastic bag or Saran under my caps for flying.

I use screw top contact lens cases for my eye and face creams, foundation, concealer, and any other “liquid” makeup item. They are small, typically won’t leak, and very packable. I have been doing this for years

Kimberly, Ditto here! I mostly use tinted gel type make up, so one lens container has two colors of gel blush with the other carrying two shades of face gel. A little of this stuff goes a long way if ( as I do) applied with water and moisturizer at the same time. No leakes at all! For the rest I save every tiny bottle of eye drops etc. for lotions, shampoo and conditioner.

The GoToobs are terrible, actually. 🙁 They leaked from about the third time I used them, but I kept giving them another chance since I haven’t had time to find other containers. This time I arrived at my destination with the contents of all three containers everywhere. I’ve lost a huge quantity of product and had to clean up progressively larger messes.

oh no that’s too bad. the best way to avoid spills is to only fill any bottle 3/4 and add a piece of saran wrap in between the lid and the bottle. see if that helps out 🙂

During the summer months when I want to melt into a puddle of sweat, I will often use SPF in place of a moisturizer—many sunscreen formulas come infused with impressive skin hydrators like shea butter and hyaluronic acid anyways. I typically will reach for a Paula's Choice number, and the new mineral option from its Calm line is just divine. It's as if a color corrector and sunscreen had a baby. With allantoin and centella asiatica, it immediately calms my complexion and makes my skin so dang soft.

Customer review: "As somebody with sensitive skin who often finds sunscreen irritating, I appreciated that the sunscreen was not irritating at all. It is a mineral formula, and I did find it to leave a white castle on my skin. It didn't sit that well in my skin, and it didn't play that well and make up. Huge Glowscreen girl over here! I remember the first time I tried the cult-favorite facial sunscreen. Now, there's more than enough of the shimmery formula to go around, but it's still TSA-approved at 3.4 ounces. I plan on tossing a few in my carry-on to shine from head to toe.

It also has a slight tint that balances zinc oxide in the mineral formula. Caudalie sunscreens are beloved in Europe, but this is the first formula to make its way stateside. It's exceptional, so no surprise there.

Can I put sunscreen in a travel container?

Technically, you could, but most experts would advise against it. Every time you open up a sunscreen bottle, you're exposing it to light and air—both of which can accelerate the product's shelf life by breaking down the ingredients. Your sunscreen is in its packaging for a reason, and every time you rehome the goop, you risk losing its efficacy. Any dirt, dust, or bacteria in your DIY jar can also mess with the ingredients and their potency. Not to mention, things can get messy!

If you're in an absolute pinch, go ahead and transfer your favorite formula. Wearing potentially less effective sunscreen is better than not wearing it at all! If you are able, try to cop a travel-size bottle instead of playing chemist.

What is the max sunscreen size for travel?

According to the TSA website , you can pack sunscreen in a bottle less than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters), be it a lotion or aerosol spray, in your carry-on baggage. For checked baggage, feel free to exceed that limit and bring full-sized bottles.

Does TSA consider stick sunscreen a liquid?
