(Nov. 18, 2021) – With US Club Soccer’s National Premier Leagues (NPL) season in full swing, the league has officially announced the dates and locations for the 2022 NPL Finals and NPL Boys Playoffs next summer. Once again, the Boys and Girls NPL Finals will be held at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park, July 7-11, 2022, in Commerce City, Colorado.

The East Playoffs will be located at Truist Sports Park in Advance, North Carolina, while the West Playoffs will take place at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado.

The 2022 NPL Girls postseason structure remains the same as years past, with qualifying teams from the U-13 through U-18/19 age brackets participating in a single stage post season event, the NPL Girls Finals , where qualifiers from member NPLs throughout the country will compete for the national title.

"My favorite part of being with Heart of the City is that they truly care about their players. They want us to be successful on the field, but also in life and help prepare us for the future. The fact that they care has been the most impactful for me because no other team I know cares enough to think about their players once they get off the field."

Mariana Tejeda, Heart of the City Athlete

"Being a soccer enthusiast for 62 years now, I see certain clubs that are made strictly to win, strictly to dominate, strictly to be a driving force to get trophies and awards, and then I see Heart of the City -- who certainly would love to be in those categories, too -- but the most important thing for Heart of the City is the development of the children.

In Waukegan, there are children in single-parent households, there are children with absent parents, there are children basically who have no direction, no structure. Heart of the City provides them a very structured environment where they learn to be responsible, and they learn to be efficient in what they do. And that’s something that many are not getting at home. I’m very proud to be associated with Heart of the City."

Wayne Motley, Former Waukegan Mayor

“I love what y’all do here. It’s not about winning at all cost. My son was playing at a different soccer league and he would say ‘Dad this isn’t fun’. Here the coaches are a lot more involved teaching all the players and moving them around in different positions. You can see they care about developing players.”

Brandon K., Soccer Academy parent

"My time with Heart of the City has definitely been an amazing experience. I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by amazing people who I consider my second family. HOTC has given me phenomenal opportunities that have shaped my path in life. Although I will be far from home, I know HOTC will be with me in my heart helping me push through my new beginnings. I wouldn't have been able to surpass obstacles in my path without the support HOTC has given me."

Jocy Anguiano, Heart of the City Alumn  - Class of 22'

“I love how all of the coaches work with all of the players. They’ll demo the moves they're working on for that week, and they have the patience to breakdown each movement so everyone understand how to perform steps. Heart of the City has the best coaches that care about making the experience enjoyable and challenging.”

Who are the Glen Ellyn Lakers?

The Glen Ellyn Lakers are a competitive travel soccer organization operated by the Glen Ellyn Park District. The Glen Ellyn Travel Soccer Organization (GETSO) has identified its mission as the need to provide a positive environment, which encourages the development of skilled soccer players who enjoy, understand, and are motivated to be successful in the game of soccer.

Glen Ellyn Lakers teams are trained and coached by the Future Pros professional training company. The Lakers offer U8 through U14 for boys who currently play in the Young Sportsmen Soccer League (YSSL) and U8 through U13 for girls who currently play in the Illinois Women’s Soccer League (IWSL).

Players will then transition to the Midwest FC program which is for U15 and older for boys and U14 and older for girls. More information on the Midwest FC can be viewed  here.

Our Purpose

  • To provide a more competitive alternative to recreation league soccer.
  • To sharpen player skills and abilities through professional training.
  • To coach players through positive interaction.
  • To develop a quality organization by attracting players and coaches who share a desire to compete at higher levels.

Our Philosophy

The Glen Ellyn Lakers believe that a positive environment is achieved through the integration of superior coaching and training with the flawless execution of the many activities necessary to administer the organization.

The development of athletic skill is achieved through qualified coaching and training appropriate to the age of the player. The development of athletic enjoyment is achieved by creating a passion of the game of soccer. The development of athletic understanding and motivation are achieved through education, communication, teamwork, participation, and good sportsmanship.

The Glen Ellyn Lakers define being successful as the ability to play with both a physical and mental understanding of the game while showing respect for one’s self, teammates, opponents, coaches, officials, and spectators.

We are CITY

As part of our ongoing staff development at CITY, reflection is essential. Our team came together over a two month period during the pandemic to establish what made CITY unique. Through challenging workshops, brainstorms and self reflection, our team quickly realized it is the care we provide through our Communities, our Athletes, our Relationships, and our Ethos that made up Chicago City Soccer Club.

Our academy teams are proud to have recently joined the ECNL as the only club in the city of Chicago to boast this prestigious accomplishment.

We proudly field teams in the USLY (formerly Super Y), USLA, USLW, and USL2 divisions. Testimonials

Absolutely love Chicago City Soccer. The coaching and leadership really care about the kids, from character development to how they perform on the pitch! They put so much thought into every step of the team's growth - it's truly impressive and we're grateful to have become part of City's family!

Chicago City Soccer Club is an outstanding organization that provides young athletes a comprehensive and well rounded training, covering their growth physically, mentally, and emotionally. The coaches are amazing and they take their time to individualize their trainings based on the athletes needs. Overall, a great place for your child to grow and develop as a soccer player and a well rounded individual.

CCSC is an excellent organization. We liked the club values and coaches during the regular season, but have also noticed they are a step ahead with virtual lessons. The zoom “practices” and online skill and fitness activities have provided my son with activities to keep soccer present, increase practice time and ball touches, to encourage team comradery, and have fun! Great job to Coach Stuart and the whole CCSC organization.

Chicago City is truly a club and not just a youth soccer program. The coaches understand what it is to be a football player and not just a place for your kid to play soccer on the weekend. Training includes teaching the game, sports psychology, diet, fitness. My older son came in as a U11 on the lowest team and worked his way up to the top team and is now playing for his high school. It is that kind of player development that City excels at. Player development takes time but if you want your son or daughter to improve their game, City is the best club in the area.

Gear up for the 2024 season!

College sports | ‘i was terrified,’ accuser testifies in rape trial of illinois basketball star terrence shannon jr..

University of Illinois basketball player Terrence Shannon Jr. appears in court during his rape trial on June 11, 2024, in Lawrence, Kansas. (Chris Conde/The Lawrence Journal-World)

LAWRENCE, Kansas — It was an emotional second day in Terrence Shannon Jr.’s rape trial as his accuser took the witness stand and described for a Douglas County jury the night she said the Chicago native and University of Illinois men’s basketball standout penetrated her vagina with his finger while at a crowded bar near the University of Kansas campus.

“I was terrified,” the woman, now 19, told jurors Tuesday, tears welling in her eyes. “I was scared and I was shocked.”

Shannon faces one count of rape or an alternative count of aggravated sexual battery, also a felony. He has denied the allegations, which stem from a September trip he and two others took to Lawrence to watch an Illini-Jayhawks football game. His NBA hopes — some prognosticators believe he could be a first-round pick in this month’s draft — likely hinge on the outcome of a trial that is scheduled to conclude two weeks before the NBA draft.

The woman’s testimony took up much of the morning’s court proceedings. The afternoon was largely focused on testimony from the Lawrence police detective who led the investigation into her allegations, and included black-and-white surveillance footage that appeared to show Shannon and the woman moments before — but not during — their alleged encounter inside the Jayhawk Cafe’s Martini Room.

Shannon’s criminal defense attorneys argued the police investigation had been sloppy in failing to interview possible witnesses and an alternative suspect who had been accused of a similar crime, two weeks earlier, in the same spot in the Martini Room where Shannon’s accuser said she was assaulted.

Members of Shannon’s family, a few friends and his agent sat in the courtroom gallery as the woman recounted an encounter she said started around 12:15 a.m. when she and her friend and roommate returned to the Jayhawk Cafe, known locally as The Hawk.

In the Martini Room, one of two bar areas in The Hawk’s basement, the woman, then 18, said she had three sips of vodka and Red Bull, which she testified was her first drink of the night.

“I thought it would be a good time,” she responded when asked why she went to the bar despite saying she didn’t particularly like crowds or drinking.

The room was hot and crowded and loud, she told jurors, and she wanted to leave. As she and her friend maneuvered through the masses, she said she saw a man wave her over to him. He was tall, she said, had different colored dreadlocks and wore a mustard-yellow shirt.

She thought he was cute, she told jurors, and with her friend’s encouragement, she went back in the room.

That’s when she said the man grabbed her and pulled her to him. She said she thought they would talk and exchange phone numbers or Snapchats. Instead, she said no words were exchanged. With a drink in one hand and a phone in the other, both arms pressed near her chest, she said she looked straight ahead as she felt the man’s hand move under her skirt to her butt.

“I was definitely uncomfortable,” she told jurors. “I don’t know why I didn’t (walk away). But I wish I did.”

Next, she said, she felt his hand move her underwear to the side and a finger inside her for what she estimated to be no more than 10 seconds.

“I didn’t react,” she said. “All I did was stand there in shock.”

When his hand left, she said, she pushed through the crowd to leave and to look for her friend. The two eventually left the bar. By then, she said, she was too hysterical to drive.

Back at her apartment, she started to search for the man’s identity. She remembered that the man had been standing by a KU basketball player at the bar. She eventually identified Shannon, she said, after searching online for photos from rosters for football and basketball teams at KU and Illinois.

She did not immediately call police, she said, fighting back tears, “because I didn’t want to end up here.”

One of Shannon’s criminal defense attorneys, Tricia Bath, spent part of her cross-examination questioning the woman about possible inconsistencies in her statements. For example, the woman told the jury Tuesday that she believed Shannon first grabbed her arm or wrist to pull her to him that night. But, Bath noted, the woman testified in a May preliminary hearing that he did not grab her arm or wrist. She also did not remember telling a nurse that he groped her vaginal area, despite telling jurors that such a groping did not take place.

Later in the proceeding, Detective Josh Leitner of the Lawrence Police Department took the stand. A nearly 17-year veteran police officer, Leitner led the department’s investigation of the Shannon case.

Jurors watched a clip of video surveillance from one of the cameras inside the Martini Room. At least one other camera in the bar was inoperable. The black-and-white footage did not have audio. It showed two people, identified by Leitner as the woman and her friend, as they slowly made their way through the throngs of people and toward an exit door near where she said the alleged assault took place.

A man Leitner identified as Shannon was seen on the video entering the room from that open door. He headed out of view on the right side of the image frame, and the woman eventually vanished from view in that same area.

The footage did not show the two together. It did capture portions of another person whom Shannon’s attorneys previously identified in court filings as a “third-party defendant.” The Chicago Tribune is not naming him because he has not been charged in connection with the woman’s alleged rape.

Two weeks before the alleged encounter between Shannon and the woman, that third-party defendant was accused by a different woman — also 18 — of touching her vagina outside her pants, without her consent, in the same area of the Martini Room. He was not charged in connection with that accusation.

Leitner said he had no reason to suspect that third-party defendant, given the woman’s certainty that Shannon had been the person who grabbed her that night.

But one of Shannon’s attorneys, Oakbrook Terrace-based Mark Sutter, grilled the detective about his decision not to question that person despite the past allegations against him.

Sutter also pressed the detective to explain why he sought a probable-cause affidavit against Shannon before DNA testing had finished and before he interviewed other possible witnesses: other KU men’s basketball players in the bar that night, Shannon’s teammate and the graduate assistant who drove with Shannon from Champaign to Lawrence for the football game.

The detective’s investigation, Sutter said during questioning, seemed to exclude any possible evidence that wasn’t “falling in your lap.”

The trial will continue Wednesday.

Records are from the NCAA Men's College World Series record book and include the 2024 tournament.

Texas baseball has made the most trips to the College World Series.

Texas was a force in the 1970s —going four straight times from 1972 to 1975 — the 80s — going five years in a row from 1981 to 1985 — and another stretch of four straight from 2002 to 2005. The Longhorns have been led by three of the winningest coaches in College World Series history — Cliff Gustafson, Augie Garrido, and Bibb Falk — and have won six national championships to go along with six national runner-up finishes.

BRAGGING RIGHTS: Complete championship history in DI baseball

25 — Miami (Fla.)

Another school led by a duo of legendary college baseball coaches. Skipper Ron Fraser led the Hurricanes to five straight College World Series beginning in 1978, culminating with the 1982 championship, while Jim Morris took them to six straight, starting in 1994 and finishing with his first title in 1999.

24 — Florida State

The Seminoles have have played in 76 games, which ties for sixth-most all-time, and have come so close to winning a title, finishing in second three times.

22 — Arizona State

Bobby Winkles made the Sun Devils an Omaha regular in the late 1960s and Jim Brock continued their College World Series legacy into the 1980s, including a run of four straight between 1975-78. Arizona State has brought home five national championships — also the fourth-most — along the way.

21 — Southern California

For a 20-year span from 1958 to 1978, the Trojans dominated college baseball. They won 10 national championships — and finished as a national runner-up in another — as the benchmark of the college baseball world. Led by Rod Dedeaux for most of its College World Series history, Southern California has played in 100 CWS games, winning 74 of them. Simply remarkable.
