What is a "travel team"?

A 'travel team' is a more competitive sports team that tends to travel in order to play in bigger, more competitive tournaments. There are travel basketball teams, travel volleyball teams, etc.

In professional team sports, a traveling team (also called a road team ) is a member of a professional league that never or rarely competes in its home arena or stadium. Click to expand...

I purchased the trip crafting service and Alona and Marie are spectacular at what they do.

I am unable to do much planning and hiring them took so much stress off my plate. When conversing with them, I definitely appreciated their friendly and professional manner, attention to detail, and the quality of the trip experience they prepare. They are quick to respond and I would not hesitate to purchase their services again when I come back, especially if you're looking for a very unique and intimate experience, for yourselves or with kids and family

Karen and Rufus C., Illinois

We are so grateful to Marie and Alona. The French Travel planned our honeymoon to France, and was beyond helpful from start to finish. They started by meeting with us when we tentatively decided we wanted to travel to France for our honeymoon; Marie met with us virtually to see what we would be interested in doing while on our trip. From there, she sent us a tailored outline of various tours and activities to choose from in order to set up a curated trip and within our budget. Marie and Alona communicated with us throughout every step of the planning process and maintained communication during our trip, checking on us to ensure that we were having a good time.

Additionally, I cannot speak highly enough about several details of the trip that Marie and Alona secured for us. Each of our tour guides were impressively knowledgeable about the area we toured and friendly, answering whatever questions we had and remaining engaging throughout. The hotels were lovely and comfortable, locally owned and operated. Marie and Alona provided an extensive list of recommended restaurants and sites to visit during our stay, and based upon the area we would be in for the scheduled activities each day.

For someone not well versed in travelling abroad, I cannot speak highly enough of how appreciative I am for someone to provide so detailed and thoughtful of a trip. I didn’t have to worry about anything. The “roadbook” provided about each day prior to our arrival even had specific notes about prescheduling cars to the train station to ensure appropriate arrival times, what might be a walkable route versus car ride, etc. They even secured our transportation to and from the airport, so we didn’t have to figure that out. My husband and I were truly able to sit back and relax for our honeymoon, which meant everything to us.

Ryan L., Regina, Canada

Working with Marie and Alona was seamless. They took care of all of the reservations - tours, restaurants, accommodation, and travel within France. All of the guides that they arranged were excellent; we speak a little French, but the guides were very accommodating and spoke English.

Marie and Alona were available any time we had a question (such as driving through Honfleur on the way to Bayeux and asking for a restaurant recommendation and things to see). They tailored the trip to things we wanted to do as a family (like trying a char a voile)! We had an excellent trip; the whole experience was well organized and we felt well taken care of.

I want to thank Marie and her team with helping me make my clients 50th birthday a magical one for her and her group of friends in the city of lights. All the incredible VIP experiences exceeded my clients' expectations. The tour guides provided intriguing and education discussions and my clients really appreciated the way the guides made them feel like friends rather than like they were on a stiff impersonal tour.

She and her team were very communicative and provided hands on support throughout the entire trip. My experience working with her as a vendor was superb. I highly recommend her and look forward to working with The French Travel again .

October 2023

I would recommend Marie and The French Travel without hesitation! Marie coordinated a once-in-a-lifetime trip to France for our group of six friends. Our travels extended from Normandy to Paris to the French Riviera.

Her planning was thoughtful and well-coordinated despite the complexity of our group and extensive travel (we were a group of three couples with different arrival and departure times). Marie did an excellent job of including all the things we wanted to see as well as including special and bespoke things we would never think of - which resulted in such a well-rounded vacation.

Our trip was efficient and thorough. We didn't feel overwhelmed at any point, spending just the right amount of time to experience each place. Our transfers were prompt and seamless. The tour guides and transfer drivers were professional, knowledgeable, and welcoming... and in our case spoke excellent English.

Communication with Marie and her team was excellent on all levels. We received a beautiful and detailed itinerary well in advance. She was very responsive to questions before and during our trip. Marie was also prompt and helpful with itinerary changes we requested during our trip. Our hotel accommodations were excellent.

We can't think of anything they could've done better. You are in the best of hands with The French Travel! Thank you so much!

Marie planned our trip of a lifetime through France . We visited for a month following our rugby team and filling our wine cellar with wonderful We just returned home from an amazing family vacation in Paris and Marie and her amazing team made sure that every moment was perfection. We reached out to Marie at the beginning of 2023 to help us plan a long awaited Parisian vacation for our family of 4, including myself and my husband and our two children, 9 and 11 years old.

Paris had been a dream vacation of our family for years and Marie created a fun filled week for us that hit all the highlights, as well as providing plenty of downtime and some incredible restaurant recommendations. The hotel she booked us was located in the St. Germain district and provided us an oasis in the middle of the city. We would sit on the patio in the courtyard listening to the fountain and enjoy a glass of wine after dinner or a small bite between activities. The room was a perfect apartment that gave my husband a quiet place separate from the kids and allowed them to have their own space at the end of a long day of sightseeing.

Speaking of sightseeing, we had two private tours with Sofie and she was so lovely! The first tour was a great overview of the city, our neighborhood and the surrounding arrondissements, as well as a history of the buildings and gardens. She made sure to add fun stops for the kids and really took the time to get to know us. Being that it was our first day, and a long day of traveling, Sofie was quick to make sure none of us needed a break. We had the absolute pleasure of having another tour with Sofie the next day, a walking food tour. Sofie knew all the best places for breads, pastries, an open air market that had some great treasures and the best olive tapenade I've ever tasted! We amassed a ton of treats and wine for a great picnic at the Eiffel Tower.

We enjoyed a skip the line Eiffel Tower tour, a skip the line Louvre tour with Lilyana, who had so many great stories about the art work and even managed to engage a VERY sleepy and jet lagged 9 year old girl.

Marie's restaurant recommendations were spectacular! We had small, intimate Parisian experiences with amazing food, friendly staff and great wine recommendations! Even when we had delays (as you often do when trying to get out of the house with kiddos) Marie was always available via text to help us let the restaurant know we were running late and on our way!

But the highlight of the trip was the private river tour that gave us a unique view of the city away from all the crowds and hustle. And the private baking class where we were all to make and bake macaroons from scratch. I have not had such a great time baking with my kids, ever! We wanted a vacation that allowed us to take our hands off the wheel a little and focus all our attention on our family. Having Marie there to handle the details and make sure everything was on track really gave us the chance to let the experiences happen and connect as a family.

We have been back just a few days and I can't stop telling all our friends and family how amazing Marie and her team is! If you are considering booking with Marie, do it! You won't regret it! We will definitely be booking with Marie again very soon.

Merci Beaucoup Marie!!

Sue and Alric W., Boston, MA

Marie planned our trip of a lifetime through France . We visited for a month following our rugby team and filling our wine cellar with wonderful wines .

Our accommodation was beyond expectations and our experiences with guides and wine tours and general historic tours the same . Every day Marie was in contact with us to make sure all was going according to plan , that we were satisfied and to ensure we had dinner reservations where needed .

Every little detail was taken into consideration with the planning of our trip , and there was a very good balance between planned activities and exploration in our own time .

Travel was made so easy … everything from car rental to train tickets were booked and planned and as we head home we want to thank you ….. so very very much .

September 2023

My husband and I couldn’t recommend Marie and her amazing team more! We wanted to celebrate our 10th anniversary in Paris, but with busy jobs and 3 kids, we didn’t feel like we had the time to research/plan enough to make the most of our 5 days there.

I’ll be forever grateful we came across The French Travel while looking for local travel agents. Even with the time difference, Marie got back to us before other local agents we reached out to and Marie and her team crafted our dream itinerary and went back and forth with us, ironing out the details and booking everything.

Once we arrived, Marie and Alona checked in often and were always available to assist us with making dinner reservations or giving us recommendations of places we never would have found on our own. This was obviously helpful from a logistical standpoint, but also removed the guesswork of figuring out where to go and time spent googling options, leaving more time for us to just enjoy.

If you’re visiting France, don’t hesitate to reach out to The French Travel - it’ll be the best decision of your trip!

Emma J. and Nathan G., Charleston, South Carolina

Marie and The French Travel team made our trip to France absolutely incredible and worry free. I will always recommend them to anyone who is looking to do a honeymoon or an extended trip in France! We did a full two weeks in Paris and around the South of France and Marie built the most amazing plan with multiple stops in beautiful places, customized tours, and within the most hospitable bed & breakfasts and boutique hotels we could’ve ever imagined. She also gave us copious amounts of recommendations of sights to see, restaurants, coffee shops, cocktail bars, patisseries and more.

We truly felt like we experienced France like the locals do all because of Marie. Marie was there for us should we need anything, at anytime (she even helped me book a doctors appointment when I got an ear infection when we got into France) and she was always checking in on us to ensure we were having a great time, comfortable and enjoying all of our scheduled trips.

It really was such an incredible experience to have such an amazing ‘concierge’ feel while on your honeymoon. We are already thinking of when we can return to France and Marie will be the first person to know. Thank you for the most unforgettable trip!!!!! Xoxo Emma & Nathan

Our vacation was nothing short of extraordinary! The service we received was absolutely amazing, leaving us in awe. From the warm welcome to the personalized experiences, every detail was crafted to perfection. This trip created memories that will stay with us forever, and I can't express enough how truly incredible it was!

Kelly H., Gainesville, Georgia

We love working with Marie and her team. They provide the most luxurious, authentic, and seamless travel experiences. Marie has excellent relationships in the industry that help curate very special moments for travelers to fully embrace and immerse themselves in the French culture. We have worked with Marie for travels within France and Monaco, and all trips have been absolutely delightful!

Sophie and Joshua F., London, UK

A wonderful review from Sophie and Josh!

Dear The French Travel team! Thank you so much for our wonderful trip to Paris! Marie and Léna you have given us memories for a lifetime! The planning which you must have gone to to create our bespoke weekend was extensive with fantastic recommendations and daily guides of Paris, to areas we never would have explored and restaurants which were true gems! We followed your easy guide and had the best memories of Paris made so easy thanks to you! The hotel which you booked us was incredible! The hidden passages your with Sylvanie was fantastic and well worth trying she was very informative and interesting to be with! The hidden passes she showed to us were beautiful and we wouldn’t normally do a tour like this but so glad we did! The trip was made stress free and much more interesting and memorable thanks to the French travel! The team were so helpful and kept in touch throughout our trip! Thank you all so much! We would 100% recommend the French travel!! Love Sophie and Josh!

Mindy D., Minneapolis, Minnesota

For the second year in a row, Marie organized a seamless trip for our two-family, group of seven (including three children). She secured reservations to the very best restaurants in Paris (yet again), and truly outdid herself with our experiences in Normandy. From top-notch tours to Mont St. Michele and Omaha Beach, to a truly stunning hotel in the countryside, we could not have asked for a more perfect trip. Our guides were knowledgeable, unfailingly kind, and catered to the needs and interests of the adults and kids alike. If you’re considering a trip to France, the very best choice you can make is using The French Travel. Marie and her team are second to none!

Talia T., NYC, NY

Marie helped organize travel and tours for my husband and I in Normandy and the Loire Valley. Everything went smoothly and we loved the tour guides to that she recommended. She also did a nice job of checking in during our 6-day trip to make sure everything was going well and we appreciated having someone we could text with questions. Thank you for making this a great trip.

Dianna H., Indialantic, Florida

When planning trips to Europe, I work with only the very best local destination specialists. In France, my go-to is, hands down, Marie. She has relationships with the highest quality custom guides, drivers, and accommodations. These relationships, paired with her extensive knowledge, help my clients experience France in a truly unforgettable way. Collaborating on client trips with Marie is fun and easy. She’s thoughtful in her itineraries and communicates promptly before, during, and after travel. My clients most recently visited Normandy and Paris with Marie, and they enjoyed every minute!

Amy & Brian W., Seattle, Washington

We were so incredibly blown away by the two-week trip that Marie at The French Travel planned for us. My family of four (two kids, aged 11 and 13) was looking to experience both Paris and other areas of France and Marie crafted a perfect itinerary for us that made our vacation unforgettable. From selecting the most incredible places to stay in Paris, Arcachon, Bordeaux and Nice, to helping create fun, interesting and unique experiences for every day of our trip, we couldn’t have asked for more out of our vacation.  Marie thought of every detail and made sure that we were taken care of every day of our trip. We left France with such wonderful memories and cannot wait to come back to visit.  We are so grateful to have found Marie and her team for everything they did for our stay!

Steve S., Naples , Florida

Marie and her team did a very nice job of putting together our trip and guiding through the various elements both before the trip and on the ground in France. In particular, the chateau in Normandy was very unique and luxurious and one we likely wouldn’t have found without her. The tour guides she hired were also outstanding. In particular, the guide we had in Normandy was truly one of the best guides we’ve ever had. She made D-Day and all the people and elements therein come to life for us. I would highly recommend Marie and the The French Travel.

Angela I.,  Mooresville, North Carolina

As a luxury travel advisor, having fantastic local partners on the ground to assist our clients during their travels is absolutely critical, and Marie is simply one of the best. Her knowledge of France is intimate and deep, and her suggestions and creativity in putting together thoughtful, heartfelt, and customized itineraries for our clients always wow. My clients have recently returned home raving about their trip to Paris and Normandy where all of their guides, drivers, and hotel staff went above and beyond to make their family trip the best one yet. Thank you to Marie for your continued partnership in making magic for our mutual clients!

Fernando D. and Roxanna D., Mexico City, Mexico

We are a married couple celebrating 35 years of marriage, we like to travel, history and enjoy a delicious meal. We already know Paris; we want to stay 2 nights per place and enjoy our trip to the fullest. That was the information provided to Marie. From the beginning it was easy to perceive that she knew her country in a deep way, that she was highly empathetic and with a high standard of service.

So, we trusted and left the planning of the trip completely to her. A first for us, we usually plan trips ourselves but we had complete confidence in Marie.

Pleasant surprises awaited us every day, for example a private cruise on the Seine with a glass of champagne was a spectacular start. The next day, a visit Monet's gardens and to listen to his story…this was only the beginning, because from this, every day was a new pleasant surprise.

We knew since we first started thinking about this trip that it was complicated, we wanted to go to a lot of places and didn´t have a lot of time. Marie made sure to create the perfect itinerary that allowed us to really experience France and at the same time it never felt rushed...Bayeux, Tours, Boudeux, Arcason, Marseille, Avignon & Gordes.

The hotels we stayed on were in general very good, cozy & friendly. They had a great service and details that made the trip very special. The recommended restaurants simply delicious.

The attention to detail in the work Marie did was demonstrated during the whole trip. We arrived to a new city and had a tour ready for us. We learned about the history and culture of every place we went to, and we ended up going to places we never would have thought. Even if we had done the research, I am sure there would have been things that Marie planned for us that we wouldn’t have done and for that we will be forever grateful.

Other than that, I would say the trip was perfect and I will be recommending Marie’s travel agency to any person that has any interest in going to France. She made sure that by the end of the trip we knew the country, its history, traditions, food and of course wine.

Brooke M. and Casey C., NYC, NY

Marie was exceptional to work with while we visited France for 2 weeks for our Honeymoon. She reccomended locations, hotels, tours, restaurants etc. that were a perfect match for our style and preferences. She was available 24/7 to check in on us and send over reccomendations as needed as plans changed during the trip. We even missed a train and she resolved the issue for us immediately which made our experience so much better and less stressful than doing it on our own. We HIGHLY recommend The French Travel and can say that Marie has amazing high-end taste, great communication, and very friendly. She was an absolute pleasure to work with!!!

Maria V.,  Miami, Florida

We had a wonderful bespoke trip to France, all planned by Marie at The French Travel. She listened to everything we wanted to do, and planned all the activities, transfers, and transports, as well as making reservations at restaurants.

Some of my favorite things were the gorgeous hotels she found for us. I also appreciated all the guides she picked for our tours.

Marie was available 24/7 during our trip, and we never felt alone. That’s something I think is really important when you travel.

She even met us quickly to say hello!

We feel like we’ve made so many friends in France and cannot wait to come back!!

Merci, Marie.

Todd S.,  Miami, Florida

Marie planned a bespoke and individualized trip for us. We told her the energy and vibe we wanted and she planned each activity, hotel, and restaurant according to our taste. Everything was well organized. Marie was communicating with us non-stop during the trip and helped us with anything we needed immediately. I will absolutely utilize her services again.

Nicole S.,  Atlanta, Georgia

As a luxury travel advisor I work with Marie to assist locally with clients visiting France - I have nothing but great things to say! My clients recently went to Paris, Burgundy and Reims and had an incredible experience. Not only did she help with unique and special experiences but she was constantly in touch with them while traveling. From a private boat on the Seine to a hot air balloon over Burgundy - they said they had a truly great time. They have also described all of their guides as being top notch and great selections for them!

Frederick and Judy J.,  Mount Vernon,  Virginia

My wife and I just returned from an unforgettable two week trip to Paris and Northern France that was organized from start to finish by The French Travel. We live in Virginia/USA, and even if we were more familiar with France we could not have planned such a terrific trip without their capable assistance. Marie and her team arranged everything: terrific hotels, wonderful tour guides, friendly drivers, and interesting stays at little known villages . Throughout our trip Marie checked in with us to ensure that everything was fine, and it most certainly was. For anyone wanting a special trip to and throughout France, I would highly recommend The French Travel.

Jennifer K. and Elizabeth V., Jefferson, Missouri

As it was our first time in Paris, France, and even Europe we wanted someone to help us put together the perfect trip. Marie did just that. From the gorgeous and perfectly located hotel, to every extremely knowledgeable and entertaining guide, from the day trip to the Champagne region to the intimate baking class in a Parisian apartment…..it was all a dream come true! She left us plenty of time to still explore the city and have time to ourselves as well. I highly recommend Marie and The French Travel, and hope to be lucky enough to return one day and use her services again.

Jamie S., Los Angeles, California

Marie planned a week of visiting Paris and the south of France for my ten year old son and I. And, without exaggeration, it was the best trip of my life (and my son's!)! Marie made sure it was special down to the hotels she recommended, the tour guides (I had requested they be kid-friendly and fun which each one was!), the restaurants and neighborhoods to explore on our "free" days. She was also always in contact with us throughout the trip! Finally, the best part, Marie made sure to get us great seats at PSG games for my son's 10th bday! It was truly the most wonderful week.

Brigid P., New Jersey

Marie and her team made our 25th anniversary trip to Paris a trip of a lifetime. She put together an amazing itinerary including everything we wanted to see and wonderful additions of her own. All of our tour guides were a pleasure to meet and spend time with. Marie was available to us and checking in on us. She will be our first call when we are ready to return to France.

Elizabeth C., Los Angeles, California

January 2023

This was our second year traveling to France with Marie's help. When we leave for the airport, everything is planned: transportation, private tours, skip the line museum tickets, all reservations at fantastic restaurants, waiting for us with a great table and menus in English. This is the way to travel. Marie anticipates our needs, knows the best of Paris off every beaten path and tricks for beating the tourists; these are trips we could never plan ourselves. Having her there locally 24/7 for whatever takes all the stress out of traveling to a foreign country. All we do is show up. Restaurant bookings are a big deal, this in and of itself is worth it. Don't miss private tours with Sophie. She is the Paris expert. Can't recommend The French Travel more highly. These trips are highlights of our life. We love you Marie.

John E., Miami Lakes, Florida

Marie assisted our family in planning some wonderful days of our family trip. She was very easy to work with & available. She arranged 3 separate tours for our family visit to France. All of the guides and places visited were enjoyed by all of us and guides were all professional and enjoyed spending time with each of them. Highly recommend Marie@thefrenchtravel and her recomendations ! Many good wishes & travels in 2023!

Lina P., Greenwich (Connecticut) January 2023

We had great experience using services of this agency. Our tour guides were wonderful. I do recommend using private tours especially for visiting Louvre and Versailles. We were in Paris during Christmas week and the lines to the museums were extremely long. Additionally, Marie gave us excellent restaurant recommendations and we felt that we dined in very good places for a reasonable price. Just be careful as some of the restaurants might not have English menus and staff does not speak English. Google helps. We travelled with two teenagers and they enjoyed the tours as well.

My wife and I honeymooned in France and are so glad we trusted Marie and The French Travel with planning our trip!

We gave her a general idea of what we wanted our trip to look like and what we wanted to do, and she planned us a detailed itinerary that was better than either of us could have imagined. She arranged for private tours for us, each with knowledgeable and friendly guides who helped make our trip incredibly special. Marie herself was responsive, friendly, and proactive throughout our trip and went above and beyond to make sure we were having a great time.

We cannot recommend Marie highly enough to craft a special trip to France no matter the occasion!

We made two very good decisions for our daughter’s 18th birthday; first was choosing France as our destination and second was having Marie from The French Travel handle the details.

Every single guide in each of our tours was exceptional. We opted for private tours and it made all the difference in the world. We went at our own pace and enjoyed each site much better than if we had opted to go it alone or as part of a larger group. in Paris we toured the Louvre, Palace of Versailles and a walking Tour of Mount de Montre. In Avignon we toured the Palace de Pope, Chateau de Cape and enjoyed a wonderful cooking class in St. Remi where I learned to make croissants and macaroons. Marie arranged activities to keep the pace to our liking and not like we were on a strict schedule and had to keep moving. We were there for 10 days so we generally had one tour scheduled a day with time for us to shop, look around and explore, which for us is an important part of my family's experience.

When we ran into small issues Marie was always there for us. All I did was send her a text and she was immediately there offering resources and suggestions for our trip. I can without any hesitation recommend Marie and ‘The French Travel’ for anyone seeking to visit France.

I had an exceptional and bespoke experience planning a mother-daughter trip with Marie and Emily. Prompt follow up, and very detailed itinerary. Wonderful!

I don't even know where to begin or how to express my sincere appreciation for Marie. With the one year "anniversary" of a tragic event fast approaching for my family, I contacted Marie desperate to get out of the country and away from all the holiday celebrations. I normally do very thorough research, but overwhelmed with grief and barely functioning, I saw some great reviews for The French Travel (and Marie specifically) and contacted her. After hearing about our situation, she agreed to work with us, helping to plan an "escape" vacation. I have to admit...I don't think I gave her much to go on in terms of ideas for what we would like to do. But armed with the very brief information I provided, she created a personalized vacation for us that was...exactly what we needed.

I have never used a service like Marie offers and I didn't know what to expect. All I knew was that I was not capable of planning anything myself. And honestly, if I had tried to plan this vacation for us, we would have been miserable. I would have done everything wrong and it would have reinforced my dread of travel and all things "touristy." But with Marie's expertise, she put together a vacation package that allowed us to do those tourist things w/o being overwhelmed by crowds. As someone who shuts down when surrounded by crowds of people this was amazing. Private tours for our little family of three with no lines and amazing, knowledgeable, and friendly tour guides. Private cooking class.

Theater. Everything that I wanted to do but didn't even know it.

But her services didn't stop there. When we were struggling with our daughter's sleep issues, she helped us find items we needed but couldn't get on our own (like where to buy the weighted blanket she needs to fall asleep, as just one example). She checked in with us to make sure we were okay. She bought my daughter a birthday present.

I could go on and on. Marie is amazing. If you have even the slightest hesitation about using her services, let it go. Contact her.

You won't regret it.

Marie with The French Travel was amazing from start to finish. She was friendly, knowledgable and thorough in her plan for my trip. She was able to recommend a hybrid holiday which explored Paris and Avignon, and she incorporated a lot of the physical activities I was looking for such as bike rides, yoga and hiking. In addition, because she is a local Parisian, she was able to help recommend restaurants and other local 'off the beaten path' places for us to explore. I highly recommend working with her!

We had a business meeting in Paris with a large group of 35 people during which I was searching for a nice team dinner after a two day workshop. As our plans were still in flux, I saw the French Travel after a Google search and submitted an email with a request for a fun team experience in Paris. Marie responded promptly with a number of suggestions for our group for team building as well as a nice dinner experience. Once we knew the exact location of our meeting, Marie was able to pivot quickly and find alternative options for us within walking distance of our meeting venue. She was able to book at lovely Parisian bistro which we had for our private event for the entire evening. Upon our arrival, we were each greeted with a lovely glass of champagne. Marie even showed up to meet me and ensure everything was in order for the evening. The restaurant itself was warm and cozy and the food was excellent. Food allergies and restrictions were considered for our attendees (vegetarian, pescatarian, gluten-free, etc.) so the meal was enjoyed by everyone. I highly recommend working with Marie if you are planning an event in Paris. She is extremely knowledgeable and prompt in her replies. She is also very well connected and knows the city and various activities that many teams would enjoy! THANK YOU, Marie for making our event an enjoyable success!

We had a cruise leaving London so we decided to add 8 days before our cruise and explore Paris. Marie with The French Travel was able to help us by planning an amazing trip. From a beautiful boutique hotel in the 7th Arrondissement we were able to explore Paris like locals. Marie arranged private guided tours to the Louvre, Versailles Palace and Champagne and they didn't disappoint. Our drivers and tour guides were amazing and these special tours made the trip! Marie was available to help and answer questions during our trip as well which made us feel more secure and her restaurant recommendations were fantastic. Let Marie help you plan your dream vacation in France. You won't be disappointed!!!

We just returned from our dream vacation to France, thanks to Marie at The French Travel. From the planning stages to the entire two weeks we were there, Marie was thoughtful, attentive and helpful. She crafted a perfect itinerary, including private transport from the airport to the hotel, wonderful, knowledgeable & fun tour guides, car rental, restaurant recommendations and reservations at the most amazing hotels. Sophie, Edvard, Melissa and Sylvanie were so professional and personable - we will always remember them fondly. We learned so much that we would have missed otherwise! We were blessed that Marie made time to meet with us before we left Paris to start our Brittany adventure, which was as magical as Paris. What a sweet and genuine person! We don’t speak French, so Marie made sure to check on us throughout our trip - it felt like we had friends in France looking out for our every need. If you are thinking of visiting France, let Marie work her magic for you - you will have the experience of a lifetime! I will recommend her to my family and friends who are planning to travel to France and hope to work with her again someday on our own second trip! France and Marie will be forever in our hearts!

Marie, French Travel, was fantastic for us. She organised 2 great tours of Montmartre and Marais. The tours covered areas of Paris that we would not otherwise have visited. They were so interesting and gave us a real in depth understanding of those areas. Marie also advised lots of local areas to visit. She also gave us lots of advice on cafes, restaurants and bars.

Our trip to Paris was so much better with her help. I would highly recommend using French Travel

Marie was so responsive to our request for a day trip to Giverny. She got us a reservation at a Michelin starred restaurant near Monet’s garden. After lunch we strolled to the garden and met our guide, Veronique, who provided us with new and interesting information about the plantings, Monet’s life, and art. We had two excellent and professional drivers in comfortable cars who drove us from Paris and then back again. Highly recommend!

We loved working with Marie to organize our two week trip to France! Everything was seamless, from transportation, to lodging, to tours. And, Marie was very responsive on the ground. One thing that really stood out was that the tour guides that Marie organized knew about our family ahead of time- Marie clearly prepped them and they all came prepared and ready, and this was much appreciated especially with respect to our 6 and 9 year old kids!

We had a wonderful tour of the Champagne region with Jean-Philippe who was both knowledgeable and personable. Chateau Penet is well worth a visit and the lunch there was amazing. Our family recently returned from a two week trip to France and Italy. We had an absolutely fantastic time, largely due to our two wonderful local Elsewhere experts. Marie planned the perfect trip for our 5 days in Paris and the Loire Valley in France! She listened to our interests and created a wonderful itinerary that hit all of the items on our wishlist. For our 10 days in Italy, Andrea was our local expert. He also created the perfect trip, taking us on amazing adventures through Venice, Cinque Terra, Florence, and Rome! There is absolutely no way we could have ever planned this trip without the help of Elsewhere and the expertise of Marie and Andrea! They were available around the clock during our trip and helped with all of our questions and needs. We have wonderful memories of France and Italy and look forward to planning another adventure in the future with the help of Elsewhere!

How on earth do you plan a Paris vacation that includes the interests of two families (four adults and three girls, ages 9, 7, and 5)? You get the help of Marie at The French Travel. Marie considered our list of requirements (amazing restaurants, tours and experiences to delight the kids, days that left some time for spontaneity and shopping), and she delivered an amazing itinerary that catered to everyone’s needs. From a private boat ride down the Seine, to a kid-friendly treasure hunt through the Louvre (that included plenty of fun and information for the grown ups!), to hard-to-get dinner reservations at exquisite restaurants, Marie fully delivered on her promise of a thoughtful, bespoke itinerary that kept our families delighted. I wanted to walk a famous trail across France.  But, with no training in French, I could not make the necessary lodging reservations.  I needed a travel professional in France to book lodging in 33 towns and villages.  Marie agreed to take on this challenge.  She and her staff did a great job researching the best options and negotiating terms for each stay.  I could not have completed this trip without their help.  Thanks for this lasting memory.

Our family of four recently returned from an absolutely amazing 10 day trip to Paris and Normandy. My wife, daughters (aged 9 and 11) and I were so thankful for both Elsewhere and our 'local expert' Marie! We were looking for a mix of the 'must-do' activities (like Versailles for example) and neighborhood walking tours, food markets, and perhaps slightly less-traditional activities. Marie is an absolute artist and curated the right mix of activities each day both in Paris and Normandy. The balance of traditional / fun, indoor / out, modern / historic were all completely balanced and each day was a new adventure. I should also mention that Marie's gastronomic recommendations were also spectacular (and hit the mark for both kids and adults alike)! Thanks Marie and thanks to Elsewhere for helping facilitate the trip of a lifetime. We look forward to working with you on future excursions!

Working with our Paris guide, Marie, was fun and convenient. She took the guess work out of planning a trip and saved us hours of research. After answering some questions about what We were interested in, Marie was able to craft a wonderful itinerary! She was very prompt with answering any questions we had and always kept us updated with changes. It was so comforting to know that we had someone we knew to help us if there was any trouble (which there wasn’t!). I can tell that she genuinely loves to help people discover Paris!

Marie was exceptional as a travel agent. She exceeded my expectations from start to finish!! She was speedy with responses, gave great ideas, very detail oriented, and organized! I did a solo trip to Paris, first solo trip, and I was not worried or confused once. Marie organized my trip booking all my tours, stay, and activities. She sent me detailed itineraries and constantly updated me on the next item in my agenda with adresses included and contacts for that activity. She also stayed up to date on what was going on in Paris and proactive when she found out Versailles was last minute closing for example. She had backup ideas to replace that day. Marie is my new friend as well now and I will definitely be referring her to all friends and family!!! I could not have asked for a better travel agent. If Icould give 100 stars, I would. :)

I found Elsewhere by chance, on Instagram. I have always planned my own trips, and am a stickler for detail, so letting someone else manage the process took a bit of a leap. I need not have worried because Elsewhere’s on the ground expert, Marie, crafted a trip for the ages! Every detail was taken care of, from booking my Covid tests, to securing restaurant reservations, to pairing me with exactly the right guides, to booking my opera tickets, to finding the perfect hotel. I felt so well looked after, but never intruded upon. My mandate to her was that I wanted to fall in love with Paris and she hit the ball out of the park! She helped me discover a whole side of the City of Light that I wouldn’t have found on my own. Thank you so much Marie and Elsewhere! I will always be grateful for the gift of Paris. Merci pour tout!!!

What an amazing idea. We wanted to experience Paris like a local but how do you do that without tons of research? Elsewhere connected us with Marie, a local travel agent and Parisian. Marie booked us a charming hotel in a wonderful neighborhood, sent us to incredible French bistros, booked us private tours of hidden parts of Paris... we felt like actual Parisians except that we didn't have to do a single thing! Marie got to know us beforehand and worked to craft the itinerary exactly to our wishes and took care of us from the moment we arrived at CDG. Drivers, tours, reservations, our Pass Sanitaire and even the PCR test we needed to continue our travels --- it was seamless. She was available 24/7 for anything and everything even stupid questions like 'we're lost'. She came by our hotel to say hello with her beautiful baby and we left Paris having made a friend. What a cool service! It was a magical trip. We can't wait to travel more. Thank you Marie!

I reached out to Marie to inquire about a virtual company tour, and she was so responsive and helpful in helping me plan and ideate! Sophie was our eventual tour guide, and she was really so full of energy and enthusiasm - so necessary when it's conducted over Zoom! My team of 30 had a blast touring the Seine, Louvre, NotreDame and especially Montmarte! During my research, I came across many tour agencies who were doing virtual tours from their home, which I honestly found strange. I'm so glad I came across The French Travel to be able to have an authentic on-street tour of Paris by a kind, hospitable and knowledgeable host.

Marie at French Travel has been amazing. I was so stressed about an engagement proposal and spoke to multiple travel planners before her and was not keen. Trust is most important when it comes to a Travel planner and Marie is very trustworthy. She planned my whole trip in Champagne, France perfectly, and added her personal touches, choosing a beautiful hotel, was able to be contacted 24/7 and so so helpful! Marie was amazing. We had booked a private Paris tour with the brief of being a bit off the beaten path. We definitely saw and learnt a lot of things we had not seen before. Not only that, Marie stayed on for an extra half hour than we had paid for. One of the best things about Marie is she was SO helpful in helping us plan our trip outside of the tour. Restaurants, places to see sunrise. Basically whatever question I had she made a lot of effort to answer with great detail. She did not need to do this as I had only really paid for a tour. I wholeheartedly recommend working with Marie at The French Travel for planning your trip to France! Our family of 5 had an absolutely perfect trip to Paris to celebrate our a Christmas holiday thanks to Her amazing planning, insights and warm support! She is truly remarkable and we are so grateful for the wonderful memories of our trip. Her local insights and suggestions gave us experiences we never could have achieved planning it on our own. It was our first time taking an international holiday with our kids aged 10, 8 and 4. We wanted to be sure our children were engaged and interested while we toured the city, and we parents also wanted to have some unique experiences. Marie helped us arrange private tours around Paris full of unique insights and to see little hidden gems around the city. She also arranged a very special private baking class where we all enjoyed learning how to bake delicious macaroons. Marie also booked all our tickets to the sights ahead of time, allowing us to show up, skip the line and maximize our time experiencing the sight. She gave us such valuable advice when planning our trip and while we were there. When we arrived at our lodging, Marie had thoughtful welcome gifts for us and a detailed book organized with our itinerary and all the paperwork/tickets. She also checked in with us each day and night to make sure everything was going smoothly. It took all the stress out of the trip and gave me confidence we were having truly special experiences each day of our trip.

We arrived on our flight from NY to Paris on a Monday morning. Shortly after arrival we met Marie at out hotel. I had a truly incredible time with Marie in Paris. She created several possible itineraries based on my interests. She was totally prepared, thoughtful, and truly made the day special. The unique thing about this experience was that I was with a local who knew the city well and could plan a wonderful day but, also, it was like meeting a new friend. Marie’s goal was making the day memorable for me. Yes, she was totally prepared and ready with suggestions, but she was also flexible, provided plenty of options, and I never felt like it was just a job for her. She truly seemed to enjoy the day as much as I did. I will absolutely use CityUnscripted again and look forward to booking another tour with Marie in the future!

August 2018

We could not have had a better time! Marie was amazing. We saw parts of Parisiterally just around the corner from the usual touristy places that we would have never discovered if not for her. Marie was knowledgeable, engaging and with a warm personality that made us all feel at home right away. Our tour focused in Marais . We had been there before but never experienced it with a guide. We have a great time sampling foods and checking out local shops, and it was made even more enjoyable by Marie’s company. We had three other tours during our stay in Europe and none even came close to the wonderful interaction we had with her. She even gave us r commendations on places to go and where to eat in the next leg of our trip which was in Brussels. Of course they were all spot on.

If we could give Marie more than five stars we would. She’s the best!

We would like to thank our partners for their valuable support in our client's satisfaction.

Real French for Travelers

Real French for Travelers

On your own schedule. at your own pace..

Real French for Travelers Complete Online Course gives you that freedom. Learn from someone who’s been in your shoes, not from a corporation. It’s easier than you think, especially with short, clear videos that’ll show you exactly how to say things and what it all means.

Choose among three options: the complete course, just the Foundations (Part 1) , or Situational French for Travelers (Part 2) to go deeper.

Why learn French?

(it’s easier than you think.).

You won’t have to ask, “Do you speak English?” anymore, and won’t that feel good? (You’ll love it. And feel proud of yourself.)

You’ll do things differently than your fellow tourists because you’re making the effort to learn like an insider. You don’t need to be fluent to do this. You can learn a basic French framework then build as you go. Step-by-step.

What’s even better than a phrasebook?

Real French, that’s what.

Get the complete course or just the first (or second ) half.

Scroll down to access two free sessions!

It’s the closest you can come to learning French in Paris.

(Café au lait not included …)

With real French, you KNOW what you’re saying, and others do, too. You can BUILD on what you learn because it’s real French. Real grammar. Real vocabulary.

Real. Isn’t that better? Especially when it comes to communicating with other people.

Read road signs and menus, ask for directions, ask for help if you’re lost or have a problem, or even strike up a simple conversation with a French person. (By the way, they love it if you make the effort to learn their language. You’d feel the same way.)

Real French for Travelers: The complete online course. Or the basics. Or Part 2, if you’ve had some French. Whichever you choose, it’s yours to keep. Review, practice, and master (all for the price of about 4 lessons with a private tutor) in as little as 8 weeks.

Unlike other French programs, it’s designed specifically for travelers.

  • Le Vrai Paris : if you’re looking for a cheaper, slightly shorter tour of 2-2.5 hours, this option is for you. The company offers specific tours of smaller areas, for example Montmartre or the Quartier Latin, perfect if you’re fitting a walking tour into a jam-packed day.

Want to drive through Europe? Try this route from Amsterdam to Paris.

Renting a car in the Netherlands can take you off the beaten path to stops such as Gouda and Dijon.

One of the first words you should learn in France or Belgium is “grève,” the French word for “strike,” because you’ll often hear it in the local news.

During the past few years, strikes have consistently interrupted European airlines and rail services. Instead of being vulnerable to tricky cross-country connections, travelers should consider renting a car. That’s even more appropriate if you’re in a small group of people who enjoy going off the beaten path.

As Americans head to Europe over the summer, many will try to fit several countries into an itinerary. A road trip allows you more flexibility and access to places that are harder to connect by rail or plane. Even for locals, traveling by car can be a fun alternative.

“I’m all about driving, flexibility, and accessibility,” says Jane Bertch, the founder of the Paris-based cooking school La Cuisine Paris and author of “The French Ingredient .” “Stay off the highways and stop by small villages for lunch and shopping. I love buying food and wine as souvenirs, and not having to deal with baggage on a train or plane is a plus.”

If you’re looking for a trip that covers three countries in 10-12 days, I’ve designed an itinerary for you to use below ( This Google map has all the driving instructions you’ll need).

Renting a car in Europe

If you’re used to driving in the United States, driving in Europe may seem more relaxed. Road rules are mostly the same in continental Europe — except the United Kingdom and Ireland, where you drive on the left side.

Keep in mind that the speed limits are in kilometers per hour, not miles. Even after almost 10 years of living in Europe, I still have to do the math in my head. The easiest way to figure it out is to multiply the number by .60; it’s .62, to be exact, but you should go with the easier math to avoid speeding tickets (they will find you!). The Netherlands and Belgium have speed cameras that capture the average speed of a trip rather than one moment on the road, so set your cruise control and don’t worry about the people zipping by you.

Renting a car is straightforward in Western Europe. Most of the big brands in the United States — Hertz, Budget, Avis, Enterprise — are available at most large airports. I stick to those brands because I can earn my airline miles and address any issues at the corporate level back home.

As for driving licenses, I’ve rented cars from Austria to Greece and have never been asked for an International Driving Permit . If you’re pulled over, however, having one could save you a ticket. They’re only $20 with an easy application process via AAA.

Roads and parking spots are often much smaller in most of Europe than in the United States, so be careful about how large of a car you rent. You can get a small SUV, but I wouldn’t recommend anything larger than a Volkswagen Tiguan or a BMW X3. Also, if you can’t drive a manual, specify an automatic car in your booking, as manual vehicles are still pretty standard across Europe.

Electric vehicles are more common in Western Europe than in the United States, and there are plenty of charging stations along the highways, parking garages and most urban neighborhoods. If you choose to rent an electric car, plan your stops around your charging time. That’s also an excellent way to explore a small town. Grab lunch and go for a little stroll while your car charges. Use apps like PlugShare to find charging stations, which display availability and the type of chargers supported.

Google Maps works just as well in Europe as in the United States, so it’s an excellent tool for road trips. Another tip is to pay for parking in advance when visiting the big cities. For example, when I drive to the Netherlands, I use a website called Parkbee . Amsterdam is notorious for its high parking fees, but I still find parking spaces for 20 euros a day. In France, Onepark offers a similar service.

Start from Amsterdam

After a few days strolling along the city’s quaint canals and admiring the Dutch masters at the Rijksmuseum, pick up your rental car at Schiphol Airport and head south to Brussels, which should take less than three hours.

Stop in Gouda, Netherlands

Gouda is known for its cheese but also for its history; the city is more than 750 years old. The charming city center, warm stroopwafels, and enticing cheese present a more laid-back side to Holland without the mass tourism of Amsterdam ’s city center.

Look up the many kaasboerderij (cheese farms) on the outskirts of Gouda. One of my favorites is Kaasboerderij De Twee Hoeven .

Stop in Brussels

Brussels is known for its art nouveau architecture, gastronomy and, of course, chocolates.

A stop at the Grand-Place (where you can also find several parking garages) is a must. Afterward, walk to the Sablon, known for its art galleries, chocolate shops and weekend antique market.

With your car parked, explore the city by metro, tram or bus and head to Saint-Gilles and Ixelles. These local favorite neighborhoods are teeming with cozy cafes and a bustling restaurant scene where you can eat Belgian classics, a pot teeming with mussels with a side of frites at La Quinciallerie , or a crispy gray shrimp croquette at Fernand Obb . You can also explore global cuisines ranging from Vietnamese to Congolese cuisine, reflecting the city’s diverse population.

Stop in Dinant, Belgium

Make some time for the charming, well-preserved medieval city in Wallonia in southern Belgium. Take a boat ride along the Meuse River with a view of the rolling hills of the Ardennes, go for a tour of the Citadel of Dinant , and stock up on chocolates and artisanal local cheeses.

Stop in Reims, France

It takes less than three hours to drive from Brussels to the Champagne region. Make your base at Reims, where you can walk or take public transportation via bus or tram to many champagne producers.

Having a car will allow you to explore other picturesque Champagne-producing towns like Aÿ-Champagne, Bouzy and Avize, as many of these small towns either don’t have train stations or only have limited schedules. These towns have independent producers whose products are hard to find outside of France. Just make sure someone agrees to be a designated driver.

“If you are on a wine trip, be sure to spit as the legal limit is equivalent to .05 percent blood alcohol content (the standard in the USA is .08 percent). Depending on the size of the pour and your size, even one drink could put you above the limit,” says Caro Feely, co-founder and director of Chateau Feely , a winery and guesthouse in the south of France.

Stop in Lyon, France

Known as the gastronomic capital of France, Lyon, with its cozy taverns known as Bouchon Lyonnaise, serving local fare such as pates and sausage-stuffed brioche and Cote du Rhone wines, has an entirely different feel than Paris with a less touristy vibe and restaurants and bars catering to the home crowd. Just as in other cities, there are plenty of parking garages where you can secure a spot in advance.

Lovers of French cuisine should include a stop to the Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, a food fall with several restaurants, for oyster shuckers, decadent cheeses, charcuterie and wine.

For stunning city views, catch a funicular to the Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière, a UNESCO world heritage site.

Stop in Dijon, France

Known for its mustard, Burgundy’s capital has a picturesque city center worth a stop. With its cobblestone streets and gothic architecture, it’s a good place for a petit pause.

Stop in Paris

You could return your rental car to Lyon and take the TGV (fast train) to Paris, which will take two hours. But if you’re looking for more adventure, drive back to Paris and head to Auxerre, a small city in the Burgundy region, for a petit pause.

Also, take advantage of the car to go to landmarks on the outskirts of Paris, like Versailles or Parc du Bois, with a bit more ease. The latter is the home of Fondation Louis Vuitton, which not only houses magnificent artworks but also Frank Gehry-designed buildings and gardens that are just as impressive.

travel team in french

The UEFA Euro 2024 debut of France, one of the tournament favorites and 2018 World Cup winner and 2022 World Cup runner-up, highlights Monday's slate of games in Germany.

France will take on Austria in Düsseldorf in the day's third game. France manager Didier Deschamps attempts to become the first person to win the World Cup and Euros as both a player and coach. Austria – under the guidance of manager Ralf Rangnick – could present a challenge for one of the tournament favorites , as it has lost just once in its past 16 matches.

In Monday's first game, the Ukraine plays Romania in Munich, which also hosted the Euro 2024 opener between Germany and Scotland . Ukraine is making its fourth consecutive appearance in the Euros, and reached the quarterfinals at UEFA Euro 2020. Romania is relatively inexperienced, but did go unbeaten during Euro qualification.

Belgium's golden generation is aging and will look to redeem themselves after a brutal showing at the 2022 World Cup, in which the Red Devils didn't make it out of the group stage after finishing in third place at the 2018 World Cup. Slovakia enters its matchup with the group favorite having won a pair of Euro tune-up games by 4-0 scorelines (over San Marino and Wales).

BYU Football Will Travel More Miles than Most Big 12 Schools in 2024

  • BYU Cougars

The 2024 version of the Big 12 conference will feature more teams than ever before: 16. It will also capture four time zones. Travel miles will become an important storyline to monitor each year. Especially for the teams on the outer rings of the conference geography, long trips will be commonplace. Travel miles should be considered when evaluating the difficulty of a team's schedule. The longer the road trips, the more difficult the road games will be to win.

On paper, BYU has one of the more difficult schedules on conference in 2024. The travel requirements won't make it any easier either. Kalani Sitake and the BYU football program will travel more miles than most Big 12 teams in 2024. BYU will travel just under 9,600 miles. That ranks fourth narrowly behind Arizona State, Utah, and UCF.

Big 12 2024 Travel Miles

  • Arizona State - 9,848
  • Utah - 9,834
  • UCF - 9,716
  • BYU - 9,582
  • Arizona - 9,312
  • West Virginia - 8,688
  • Baylor - 8,644
  • Houston - 8,540
  • Cincinnati - 7,916
  • TCU - 7,628
  • Kansas State - 7,600
  • Colorado - 7,428
  • Kansas - 7,368
  • Texas Tech - 6,248
  • Iowa State - 5,742
  • Oklahoma State - 4,372

Teams like UCF, BYU, Utah, Arizona, West Virginia and Arizona state will consistently rank near the top of this list. It will be up to their athletic directors to make nonconference travel requirements more feasible during high-travel years.

Schools in the middle of the conference will have that advantage on an annual basis. Oklahoma State, for example, will travel less than half the miles that Arizona State will travel in 2024.

This year, BYU's nonconference schedule will add to the travel burden. BYU's nonconference schedule is unlike other Big 12 schools . After hosting Southern Illinois in the season opener, BYU will travel to SMU and Wyoming for consecutive road games to wrap up the nonconference slate.

Article body

How they qualified, top scorers, pedigree, key players and the coach – all you need to know about the 24 teams competing for glory at UEFA EURO 2024 in Germany.

Group A fixtures 5-1 vs Scotland (Munich, 14 June, 21:00) vs Hungary (Stuttgart, 19 June, 18:00) vs Switzerland (Frankfurt, 23 June, 21:00)

Qualifying Qualified automatically as hosts

Pedigree EURO best: Winners 1972, 1980 (both as West Germany), 1996 EURO 2020: Round of 16, lost 2-0 to England

Coach: Julian Nagelsmann Nagelsmann has been on something of a roller-coaster ride since succeeding Hansi Flick in September 2023, but friendly wins against France and Netherlands in March seem to have sparked optimism and belief. The tactically astute 36-year-old selects players based on form, and convincing Toni Kroos to return from international retirement could turn out to be his best move yet.

Key player: İlkay Gündoğan It will be up to the likes of Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané and Florian Wirtz to provide the attacking spark, but Gündoğan will be the man charged with instilling balance. Nagelsmann sees Gündoğan as a No10 who can make the players around him shine, and although the experienced captain may sometimes keep a low profile on the pitch, his team-mates benefit greatly from his intelligence and vision.

One to watch: Maximilian Mittelstädt Regarded as one of the best left-backs in the Bundesliga in 2023/24, the 27-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable rise since being relegated with Hertha Berlin last term. Now at Stuttgart, Mittelstädt is set to enhance Germany's options in the full-back position with his high work-rate and selfless attitude.

Did you know? Germany are appearing at a record 14th EURO. They did not qualify for the first three editions (1960, 1964 and 1968) but have not missed a finals since.

Group A fixtures 1-5 vs Germany (Munich, 14 June, 21:00) vs Switzerland (Cologne, 19 June, 21:00) vs Hungary (Stuttgart, 23 June, 21:00)

Qualifying Group A runners-up: P8 W5 D2 L1 F17 A8 Qualifying top scorer: Scott McTominay (7)

Pedigree EURO best: Group stage (1992, 1996, 2020) EURO 2020: Group stage

Coach: Steve Clarke Scotland have reached back-to-back European Championships under Clarke, the first Scotland manager to achieve that, and have qualified directly for a major finals for the first time since 1998. If they can reproduce their fine qualifying form, the next target for Clarke and company will be to make further history by becoming the first Scotland squad to progress beyond the group stage at a finals tournament.

Key player: Scott McTominay With seven goals in qualifying, look no further than McTominay. At a time when he wasn't a regular starter at Man United, Scotland became McTominay's 'happy place' with Clarke urging him to play "with a smile on his face". His memorable double in the 2-0 Hampden win over Spain certainly had all of Scotland smiling, and the Tartan Army will be hoping McTominay can reproduce his goalscoring form come mid-June.

One to watch: Tommy Conway With previous wildcard Ben Doak withdrawn from the provisional squad through injury, attention now turns to his replacement, Bristol City striker Tommy Conway. The 21-year-old scored ten Championship goals for his club last season and has found the back of the net three times in seven games at Under-21 level. A strong runner and good finisher, Conway could be a key player off the bench.

Did you know? This is the second time Scotland have qualified for back-to-back European Championships.

Group A fixtures 1-3 vs Switzerland (Cologne, 15 June, 15:00) vs Germany (Stuttgart, 9 June, 18:00) vs Scotland (Stuttgart, 23 June, 21:00)

Qualifying Group G winners: P8 W5 D3 L0 F16 A7 Qualifying top scorer: Barnabás Varga, Dominik Szoboszlai (4)

Pedigree EURO best: Third place (1964) EURO 2020: Group stage

Coach: Marco Rossi Having led Hungary from Nations League C to A, come agonisingly close to progressing from a EURO 2020 group containing Germany, France and Portugal, and now, unbeaten, reached EURO 2024, Rossi's popularity is sky high among players and fans alike. The Italian appears equally smitten, taking Hungarian citizenship. The togetherness, discipline and belief he has instilled among his squad is remarkable, with Hungary looking increasingly capable of springing a surprise or two.

Key player: Dominik Szoboszlai Parallel to the meteoric rise of Hungary under Rossi has been that of Szoboszlai. Still only 23, Hungary's midfield maestro is fast approaching 50 international appearances. Always a game changer, he and Hungary are thriving under his captaincy. A dead-ball specialist and box-to-box midfielder who offers athleticism, intensity, work rate, pace, vision, creativity, goals, assists and a steely sense of purpose, Szoboszlai has taken his game to another level as on-field leader of this tightly knit Hungary side.

One to watch: Milos Kerkez Twenty-year-old Kerkez came through the Rapid Wien and Milan academies before a breakthrough campaign at AZ and a transfer to the Premier League, where he's had a fine first season with Bournemouth. At international level, Kerkez has quickly established himself as Hungary's first-choice left wing-back since debuting against Germany in September 2022. Tough and reliable defensively, Kerkez possesses great technique and vision, and is also a tireless attacking threat on the overlap.

Did you know? Hungary's 14-match unbeaten run in the lead-up to the finals was their longest sequence since Ferenc Puskás and the Mighty Magyars – 18 games between July 1954 and February 1956 – under Gusztáv Sebes.

Group A fixtures 3-1 vs Hungary (Cologne, 15 June, 15:00) vs Scotland (Cologne, 19 June, 21:00) vs Germany (Frankfurt, 23 June, 21:00)

Qualifying Group I runners-up: P10 W4 D5 L1 F22 A11 Qualifying top scorer: Zeki Amdouni (6)

Pedigree EURO best: Quarter-finals (2020) EURO 2020: Quarter-finals, lost 3-1 on penalties to Spain (1-1 aet)

Coach: Murat Yakin The 49-year-old has been at the 'Nati' helm since summer 2021. He oversaw Switzerland's run to the last 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where they reached the knockout phase for a fifth straight major tournament. After a low-key end to their EURO 2024 qualifying campaign, Yakin will want his team to regain their famed consistency as they bid to extend that impressive run.

Key player: Granit Xhaka Switzerland's most-capped player will head into this tournament with confidence sky-high, having been a key part of Leverkusen's astonishing season. The captain and midfield stalwart not only brings leadership qualities and a steely mentality, he also possesses excellent vision and a superb passing range. His position at the heart of midfield helps his team-mates tick in perfect rhythm.

One to watch: Ruben Vargas The 25-year-old has evolved into a key player for Switzerland, scoring two typically crucial headers in qualifying draws against Israel and Kosovo to seal their finals spot. This will be the third major tournament for the winger, who is known for his skill on the ball, ability in one-v-ones, and goal threat.

Did you know? EURO '96 was Switzerland's first European Championship finals; this year marks their sixth finals appearance in the last eight editions.

Group B fixtures 3-0 vs Croatia (Berlin, 15 June, 18:00) vs Italy (Gelsenkirchen, 20 June, 21:00) vs Albania (Düsseldorf, 24 June, 21:00)

Qualifying Group A winners: P8 W7 D0 L1 F25 A5 Qualifying top scorers: Joselu, Álvaro Morata (4)

Pedigree EURO best: Winners (1964, 2008, 2012) EURO 2020: Semi-finals, lost 4-2 on penalties to Italy (1-1 aet)

Coach: Luis de la Fuente A likeable Basque who won the Spanish Liga as a full-back with Athletic Club, the Spain boss has the winning habit. His side beat Group B rivals Italy and Croatia as they won the UEFA Nations League last summer, and he previously led national teams to EURO glory at under-age levels – the U19s in 2015 and the U21s in 2019. The levels he can summon from his big players after brilliant club seasons will dictate Spain's trajectory.

Key player: Rodri Midfielders tend not to get the garlands they deserve, but Rodri is possibly the best player in the world right now. Naturally gifted, athletic and competitive, he is at peak age and has the necessary knowledge. Used to winning trophies at Man City, he is inspirational in word and deed.

One to watch: Lamine Yamal A magical, mercurial talent, Yamal is huge fun whether you support La Roja or not. He turns 17 the day before the EURO final but began the tournament with six caps, two goals and two assists for Spain. He has played over 50 times for club and country, and home-town team Barcelona rate him as a massive prospect. Left-footed, he is usually deployed as an inverted winger. Pedri lit up EURO 2020; Lamine could be the wonderkid this time, having already become the youngest-ever EURO player .

Did you know? Spain are the only national team to have won three continental and world titles in a row: EURO 2008, the 2010 World Cup and EURO 2012.

Group B fixtures 0-3 vs Spain (Berlin, 15 June, 18:00) vs Albania (Hamburg, 19 June, 15:00) vs Italy (Leipzig, 24 June, 21:00)

Qualifying Group D runners-up: P8 W5 D1 L2 F13 A4 Qualifying top scorer: Andrej Kramarić (4)

Pedigree EURO best: Quarter-finals (1996, 2008) EURO 2020: Round of 16, lost 5-3 aet to Spain

Coach: Zlatko Dalić Since taking over in 2017, Dalić has guided Croatia to astonishing achievements, including back-to-back World Cup medals by reaching the final in 2018 and securing third place in 2022. Before that, the erstwhile midfielder took his coaching talents to clubs in Albania, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, securing silverware each time.

Key player: Luka Modrić The question of whether Modrić is approaching his swansong seems to occur at every major tournament, but Croatia hope his magic continues to endure. The midfield maestro remains essential to their success, with his ability to control the pace of the game and his vision undiminished. His charisma, passion and leadership not only underline his talent but affirm his status as Croatia's greatest player and captain.

One to watch: Joško Gvardiol Gvardiol has quickly blossomed into one of Europe's top defenders. Known for his solid defensive ability at both centre-back and left-back, Gvardiol's tactical acumen and physical prowess are expected to develop further under the guidance of Pep Guardiola at Man City. Though only 22, he should play a pivotal role in Croatia’s campaign.

Did you know? Croatia have qualified for seven out of eight EURO final tournaments as an independent nation, and have proceeded to the knockout stage in four of their six appearances to date.

Group B fixtures 2-1 vs Albania (Dortmund, 15 June, 21:00) vs Spain (Gelsenkirchen, 20 June, 21:00) vs Croatia (Leipzig, 24 June, 21:00)

Qualifying Group C runners-up: P8 W4 D2 L2 F16 A9 Qualifying top scorer: Davide Frattesi (3)

Pedigree EURO best: Winners (1968, 2020) EURO 2020: Winners

Coach:   Luciano Spalletti The much-travelled Tuscan took over from Roberto Mancini in August, just after leading Napoli to a historic Scudetto title. He wasted little time in conveying his football philosophy to the Azzurri squad, helping them reach the finals in Germany and starting to rebuild the national team by mixing veterans of the EURO 2020 triumph with a new generation of players.

Key player: Nicolò Barella The Sardinian was already a key member of the Italy midfield trio that helped the Azzurri win the trophy in 2021, but the 27-year-old is now at a career peak after reaching the UEFA Champions League final with Inter in 2023 and winning the Scudetto with the Nerazzurri this season. With boundless energy, technique, creativity and leadership, Barella is a valuable asset in several respects.

One to watch: Alessandro Buongiorno Replacing old lions like Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci was never going to be easy, but Italy are discovering new names to marshal their defence and Buongiorno is one of them. The Torino captain made his Italy debut in the Nations League finals last June, with his second cap coming in November's crucial 0-0 draw with Ukraine. Rock solid and elegant in defence, the young man with the cheerful surname has a degree in Business Administration, just like Chiellini.

Did you know? The Ukraine stalemate which confirmed Italy's place in Germany was then 24-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma's 60th appearance for the Azzurri. His predecessor, Gianluigi Buffon, reached the same milestone as a 28-year-old in another goalless draw with Ukraine, ending his career with a record 176 caps.

Group B fixtures 1-2 vs Italy (Dortmund, 15 June, 21:00) vs Croatia (Hamburg, 19 June, 15:00) vs Spain (Düsseldorf, 24 June, 21:00)

Qualifying Group E winners: P8 W4 D3 L1 F12 A4 Qualifying top scorers: Jasir Asani, Nedim Bajrami (3)

Pedigree EURO best: Group stage (2016) EURO 2020: did not qualify

Coach: Sylvinho Sylvinho's appointment in January 2023 heralded a new era for the Albanian national team. With his background in elite football, the Brazilian has succeeded in rejuvenating the side's playing style and instilling a winning mentality. His leadership has brought unity and cohesion, creating a team capable of surprising their opponents at EURO 2024.

Key player: Berat Djimshiti The imposing Atalanta centre-back adds defensive solidity and leadership, with his aerial prowess, tactical intelligence and strength in the tackle making Djimshiti a commander at the back. His top-level experience in Serie A is also an asset, inspiring confidence among team-mates. Indeed, Djimshiti's presence brings a composure which could prove vital for Sylvinho's squad.

One to watch: Ernest Muçi Despite having played only nine times for Albania by May, Muçi inspires great expectations given his skillset and versatility. Renowned for his pace, technical prowess and ability to create goalscoring chances, the Beşiktaş forward is a dynamic force. With his knack for producing decisive moments in front of goal, Muçi could prove a key performer in Germany.

Did you know? Before EURO 2024, Albania had never lost a game after taking the lead under Sylvinho.

Group C fixtures 1-1 vs Denmark (Stuttgart, 16 June, 18:00) vs Serbia (Munich, 20 June, 15:00) vs England (Cologne, 25 June, 21:00)

Qualifying Group H runner-up: P10 W7 D1 L2 F20 A9 Qualifying top scorer: Benjamin Šeško (5)

Pedigree EURO best: Group stage (2000) EURO 2020: did not qualify

Coach: Matjaž Kek Back for a second finals after steering Slovenia to the 2010 World Cup, the former centre-back resumed command in November 2018, leading his country to promotion from Nations League League C before overseeing a successful EURO qualifying campaign. The 62-year-old is confident his side can give their Group C rivals a run for their money.

Key player: Jan Oblak Rated one of the planet's premier shot-stoppers, the Slovenia captain has made over 300 appearances for Atlético de Madrid and boasts considerable Champions League experience. Nicknamed 'The Octopus of Škofja Loka', the 31-year-old can expect a busy tournament, so should be pivotal to Slovenia's success.

One to watch: Benjamin Šeško The lofty Leipzig forward was not even born when Slovenia played at their last EURO in 2000, but it was his penalty against Kazakhstan – his tenth goal for his country – that secured his side’s passage to these finals. Šeško moved to Salzburg aged 16, scoring regularly for the Austrian club before switching to Germany last summer.

Did you know? Slovenia met England at the 2010 World Cup, Jermain Defoe scoring the only goal in a narrow defeat which cost Kek's men a last-16 place. They face the Three Lions in their final Group C game in Germany.

Group C fixtures 1-1 vs Slovenia (Stuttgart, 16 June, 18:00) vs England (Frankfurt, 20 June, 18:00) vs Serbia (Munich, 25 June, 21:00)

Qualifying Group H winners: P10 W7 D1 L2 F19 A10 Qualifying top scorer: Rasmus Højlund (7)

Pedigree EURO best: Winners (1992) EURO 2020: Semi-final, lost 2-1 aet to England

Coach: Kasper Hjulmand Hjulmand led Denmark to the semi-finals at EURO 2020 – their best result since winning the tournament in 1992. The coach played an important role as the nation came together after Christian Eriksen's on-field cardiac arrest, and following a disappointing World Cup the former Lyngby, Nordsjælland and Mainz boss will aim to give Denmark fans another summer to remember.

Key player: Pierre-Emile Højbjerg Other players may catch the eye more than Højbjerg, but a good performance from the 28-year-old midfielder tends to be central to Danish success. The Tottenham man binds together defence and midfield, always stepping up when he pulls on the red shirt. When Højbjerg is at his best, he lifts the whole team.

One to watch: Rasmus Højlund Højlund has been Hjulmand's go-to man for goals, scoring seven in qualifying – including a hat-trick on his first Denmark start against Finland in March 2023. In his first season at Man United, the 21-year-old became the youngest player to score in six consecutive Premier League games.

Did you know? To date, Denmark have taken part in eight EUROs since the introduction of the group stage, advancing to the knockout phase on four of those occasions.

Group C fixtures 0-1 vs England (Gelsenkirchen, 16 June, 21:00) vs Slovenia (Munich, 20 June, 15:00) vs Denmark (Munich, 25 June, 21:00)

Qualifying Group G runners-up: P8 W4 D2 L2 F15 A9 Qualifying top scorer: Aleksandar Mitrović (5)

Pedigree EURO best: Runners-up (as Yugoslavia, 1960, 1968) EURO 2020: Did not qualify Coach: Dragan Stojković Having played at EURO '84 with Yugoslavia and at the 2000 finals with Serbia and Montenegro, 'Piksi' has steered his nation to their first EURO in 24 years – and their first as Serbia. One of the best midfielders in Serbian history, he took charge of the national team on his 56th birthday in 2021. His charisma and desire have propelled the Eagles to the 2022 World Cup and now EURO 2024.

Key player: Aleksandar Mitrović 'Mitrogol' has had a great season with Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. The powerful striker from Smederevo is Serbia's all-time top international scorer and something of a national hero for his persistence, ability to score from near-impossible situations and will to fight until the end. Don't be surprised if you hear supporters singing the "Mitro's on fire" song in Germany.

One to watch: Strahinja Pavlović Serbia have good forwards and great goalkeepers, but 23-year-old defender Pavlović can go under the radar. A tireless worker who has been making a name for himself with Salzburg in the Champions League, he made his Serbia debut in 2020 and comes into the finals with over 30 caps. Impressive at the 2022 World Cup; he may be even better in Germany.

Did you know? Yugoslavia were runners-up at the first-ever EURO in 1960; the Soviet Union denied them the title with an extra-time winner in Paris.

Group C fixtures 1-0 vs Serbia (Gelsenkirchen, 16 June, 21:00) vs Denmark (Frankfurt, 20 June, 18:00) vs Slovenia (Cologne, 25 June, 21:00)

Qualifying Group C winners: P8 W6 D2 L0 F22 A4 Qualifying top scorer: Harry Kane (8)

Pedigree EURO best: Runners-up (2020) EURO 2020: Runners-up, lost 3-2 on penalties to Italy (1-1 aet)

Coach: Gareth Southgate After reaching a EURO final as well as a World Cup quarter-final and semi-final in his three major tournaments in charge, Southgate will be desperate for this to be fourth time lucky. The former Three Lions centre-back, a hugely popular figure with his players, will seek to get the best out of the vast amount of talent at his disposal in Germany.

Key player: Harry Kane England may have a glut of attacking options but it is their captain and talisman who makes them tick. His country's all-time leading scorer, Kane has enjoyed a highly impressive first term at Bayern and will attempt to take his fine form in Germany onto the international stage. With lethal finishing, incredible vision and strong link-up play, Kane can pose a headache for any defence in the world.

One to watch: Cole Palmer The attacking midfielder has been Chelsea's best player this season, providing a consistent supply of goals and creativity. His unflappable demeanour and composure on the ball have earned him the nickname 'Cold Palmer'; it really does seem nothing fazes him. If Southgate can find a spot for him in the front three behind Kane, he could take the tournament by storm.

Did you know? England have lost just once in their last 65 European Championship and World Cup qualifiers: a 2-1 defeat to Czechia in the EURO 2020 preliminaries.

Group D fixtures 2-1 Poland (Hamburg, 16 June, 15:00) vs France (Leipzig, 21 June, 21:00) vs Austria (Berlin, 25 June, 18:00)

Qualifying Group B runners-up: P8 W6 D0 L2 F17 A7 Qualifying top scorers: Cody Gakpo, Calvin Stengs, Wout Weghorst (3)

Pedigree EURO best: Winners (1988) EURO 2020: Round of 16, lost 2-0 to Czechia

Coach: Ronald Koeman Koeman had a stuttering start to his second spell in charge of the Oranje, losing three of his first four matches – against France, Croatia and Italy. However, he steadied the ship, with the Dutch winning all their group qualification games bar those against the French. A EURO winner as a player in 1988, the 61-year-old would achieve immortality in the Netherlands if he repeated the feat as coach.

Key player: Memphis Depay The Atlético de Madrid ace has had a frustrating run of injuries in recent seasons, but when fit he's the undisputed spearhead of the Dutch attack. Only six goals short of Robin van Persie's all-time record of 50, Depay averages a goal every two matches for the national team – and supplies plenty of assists too.

One to watch: Jeremie Frimpong Frimpong hasn't featured much in an orange shirt yet but he's knocking on the door after a spectacular season with Leverkusen. The 23-year-old was the most productive defender in Europe's top five leagues in 2023/24, having been involved in 18 Bundesliga goals at the time of writing. An attack-minded right-back with boundless energy, Frimpong's ability to round off his forward surges with a decisive pass or telling finish could be invaluable.

Did you know? Wim Kieft's fortuitous effort against the Republic of Ireland during Oranje's victorious EURO ‘88 campaign was the Netherlands' first headed goal at a major finals. It was also the only one of the eight Dutch strikes in West Germany that was not finished or created by Marco van Basten.

Group D fixtures vs Austria (Düsseldorf, 17 June, 21:00) vs Netherlands (Leipzig, 21 June, 21:00) vs Poland (Dortmund, 25 June, 18:00)

Qualifying Group B winners: P8 W7 D1 L0 F29 A3 Qualifying top scorer: Kylian Mbappé (9)

Pedigree EURO best: Winners (1984, 2000) EURO 2020: Round of 16, lost 5-4 on penalties to Switzerland (3-3 aet)

Coach: Didier Deschamps One of the most decorated figures in world football, Deschamps will be eager to get his hands on the one trophy that has evaded his clutches as a coach. He came agonisingly close in 2016, and that heartbreak should stoke the fire within this fierce competitor. A cool character and a measured communicator, the World Cup winner looks well placed to lead his side to glory.

Key player: Kylian Mbappé France boast an embarrassment of riches up front but the mercurial Parisian is a cut above the rest. At just 25, there's not much left for him to achieve in the game yet a EURO trophy is certainly one of those objectives. Destructive, powerful, omnipotent... the mere mention of Mbappé's name strikes fear into opponents. Since taking the armband following Hugo Lloris's retirement, the former Monaco youth has grown in stature and assumed responsibilities with aplomb. Expect him to challenge for both the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament.

One to watch: Warren Zaïre-Emery A revelatory figure for Paris this season, Zaïre-Emery became, at 17, the youngest player to appear and score for France since 1914 when fielded against Gibraltar in November. Possessing physicality, professionalism and tactical maturity beyond his years, the Parisian could use this tournament as a springboard and become a fixture at the heart of the French midfield.

Did you know? France's Antoine Griezmann holds the record for most consecutive appearances in international football history, after featuring in 84 games between August 2017 and November 2023.

Group D fixtures 1-2 Netherlands (Hamburg, 16 June, 15:00) vs Austria (Berlin, 21 June, 18:00) vs France (Dortmund, 25 June, 18:00)

Qualifying Group E third place: P8 W3 D2 L3 F10 A10. Qualified via play-offs after beating Estonia and Wales Qualifying top scorer: Robert Lewandowski (3)

Pedigree EURO best: Quarter-finals (2016) EURO 2020: Group stage

Coach: Michał Probierz Probierz replaced Fernando Santos in September and steered his nation through the play-offs to ensure participation in his first major international tournament. Probierz spent his playing days in Poland and Germany, while his best coaching achievement in club football has been winning the Polish Cup with Jagiellonia Białystok and Cracovia.

Key player: Robert Lewandowski The captain, the player with the most caps and the all-time leading scorer by some distance, Lewandowski is Poland's talisman. One of the best strikers in world football of the past decade, the veteran will play his fourth EURO finals in familiar surroundings, following spells at Dortmund and Bayern.

One to watch: Jakub Piotrowski This has been the best season of Piotrowski's career. The 26-year-old has scored goals aplenty from defensive midfield, not only in the Bulgarian league for Ludogorets but in their UEFA Europa Conference League campaign. Blessed with a powerful long-range shot, Piotrowski has also delivered for Poland, scoring against Czechia in qualifying and against Estonia in the play-off semis.

Did you know? Poland have regularly appeared at World Cup finals yet did not qualify for their first EURO until 2008. Since then they have not missed a single edition of the tournament.

Qualifying Group F runners-up: P8 W6 D1 L1 F17 A7 Qualifying top scorer: Marcel Sabitzer (4)

Pedigree EURO best: Round of 16 (2020) EURO 2020: Round of 16, lost 2-1 aet to Italy

Coach: Ralf Rangnick Known as one of the godfathers of 'gegenpressing', Rangnick has left an indelible mark on modern football and Austria's current crop of players. No longer a side inhibited by a defensive mindset, Rangnick's charges have produced some eye-catching attacking performances. Belief is growing that Austria can make the knockout stage, like they did in 2021.

Key player: Marcel Sabitzer A devastating ACL injury to talismanic captain David Alaba means his contemporaries will have to shoulder more responsibility this summer. Chief among them is midfielder Sabitzer who, fresh from playing a key role in helping Borussia Dortmund to the Champions League final, will hope to enjoy a similar fairy-tale run in Germany. Boasting tenacity, vision and an eye for goal from distance, Sabitzer is a vital cog in Rangnick's engine room.

One to watch: Nicolas Seiwald Praised by Rangnick for his qualities on and off the ball, EURO 2024 could be a breakout tournament for Seiwald, the Austrian Bundesliga Player of the Season for 2022/23, who has been in and out of the Leipzig team this term. The knee injury suffered by Xaver Schlager was bittersweet for Seiwald, giving the 23-year-old more game time with Leipzig but costing him his partner-in-crime in the Austrian midfield.

Did you know? Christoph Baumgartner grabbed international headlines in March when he scored the fastest international goal of all time after just SIX seconds against Slovakia.

Group E fixtures vs Romania (Munich, 17 June, 15:00) vs Slovakia (Düsseldorf, 21 June, 15:00) vs Belgium (Stuttgart, 26 June, 18:00) Qualifying Group C third place: P8 W4 D2 L2 F11 A8. Qualified via play-offs after beating Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland Qualifying top scorer: Viktor Tsygankov (3) Pedigree EURO best: Quarter-finals (2020) EURO 2020: Quarter-finals, lost 4-0 to England Coach: Serhiy Rebrov One of Ukraine's best-ever forwards, Rebrov formed a formidable partnership with Andriy Shevchenko in the late 1990s. He started his coaching journey at Dynamo Kyiv in 2014, winning the league and the Ukrainian Cup twice before taking charge of the national team during EURO 2024 qualifying, following successful spells in Saudi Arabia, Hungary and the United Arab Emirates. His side narrowly missed out on second place in Group C but got to Germany via the play-offs.

Key player: Illia Zabarnyi It may seem unusual to highlight a central defender in a team featuring La Liga's top scorer Artem Dovbyk and a slew of other talented attackers, but 21-year-old Zabarnyi anchors the side with his excellent anticipation and precise passing. Having gained Champions League experience at Dynamo Kyiv, he has enjoyed an outstanding 2023/24 in England with Bournemouth.

One to watch: Volodymyr Brazhko Not as well known as fellow youngsters Zabarnyi, Georgiy Sudakov and Mykhailo Mudryk, 22-year-old Brazhko has huge potential. The defensive midfielder reached double figures for goals and assists in the Ukrainian league with Dynamo Kyiv, and he proved his worth to the national team in the play-offs. Many expect the Under-21 captain to cement a starting place in Germany. Did you know? Due to the ongoing Russian military invasion in Ukraine, the national team played all of their nominal home matches abroad in qualifying: two in Poland and one each in Slovakia, Czechia and Germany.

Pedigree EURO best: Winners (as Czechoslovakia, 1976), round of 16 (as Slovakia, 2016) EURO 2020: Group stage

Coach: Francesco Calzona Calzona took the reins in August 2022, replacing Pavel Hapal. He started with a home stalemate against Luxembourg in EURO qualifying but has not looked back since, guiding Slovakia to victories in all their remaining games other than those against table-topping Portugal. Since February, he has combined the national team job with the head coach position at Napoli.

Key player: Milan Škriniar A strong-tackling centre-back and born leader on and off the pitch, Škriniar took the captain's armband following Marek Hamšík's retirement in 2022. An ankle injury forced him to miss the first three months of this year, but he returned for Paris Saint-Germain in April, well rested and champing at the bit. It was a welcome sight for Calzona – it's hard to imagine the Slovakia defence without Škriniar this summer.

One to watch: Leo Sauer A winger who scored on his Feyenoord debut aged 17 last August, Sauer became Slovakia's youngest-ever player in March when deployed off the bench in a friendly against Norway. Bratislava-born Sauer is one of the most promising players to emerge from Slovakia in recent times, a precocious talent already with big-tournament experience – as his nation's youngest player, naturally, at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina.

Did you know? EURO 2016 was Slovakia's first European Championship finals since the separation of Czechoslovakia in 1993. Ján Kozák's team reached the round of 16, being eliminated by Germany.

Pedigree EURO best: Final (1980) EURO 2020: Quarter-final, lost 2-1 to Italy

Coach: Domenico Tedesco Born in southern Italy, Tedesco played in the German lower divisions before moving into coaching. In 2017, as a 31-year-old, he took charge of German second-tier club Erzgebirge Aue, helping them avoid relegation. He later managed Schalke and Spartak Moscow before winning the German Cup and reaching the Europa League semi-finals with Leipzig. Now ready to take on his biggest challenge yet.

Key player: Kevin De Bruyne Blessed with extraordinary vision, laser-precise passing and goalscoring ability, De Bruyne is the creative linchpin of the Man City team that have dominated English football of late. Despite missing games through injury this term, De Bruyne nonetheless moved second in the list of Premier League assist providers both this season and all time. He is also among Belgium's top ten goalscorers historically, having represented his country at five major tournaments, including the last two EUROs.

One to watch: Johan Bakayoko Rated one of the best dribblers in Europe, the 21-year-old Bakayoko has been PSV Eindhoven's shining light in an astonishing Eredivisie-winning campaign. For Belgium, he has one goal and two assists, not to mention rising expectations from supporters who have seen Eden Hazard depart and are looking for that dynamic winger to drive them to glory.

Did you know? Since replacing Roberto Martínez, coach Tedesco is unbeaten in his first year directing the national team.

Pedigree EURO best: Quarter-finals (2000) EURO 2020: Did not qualify

Coach: Edward Iordănescu Son of Anghel Iordănescu, Iordănescu Jr's Romania side came through qualifying unscathed to book their place at this EURO following an eight-year absence. Synonymous with a modern and meticulous approach to match preparation, Iordănescu's goal is to build an exciting new generation for the national team. He will strive to get the most out of his players in Germany and give the travelling Romania fans plenty to cheer about.

Key player: Nicolae Stanciu Stanciu is Romania's captain and one of just two players in the current squad with previous experience of a major international tournament. The 31-year-old is considered the talisman of the team and has the ability to be a real difference maker. Hugely popular among his team-mates, he will endeavour to lead his side through these finals with courage and confidence.

One to watch: Radu Drăgușin Drăgușin is Romania's leading light, having joined English Premier League club Tottenham in January. A totemic figure at the back despite being one of the younger players in the set-up, the 22-year-old is one of the country’s surest hopes of boasting a long-term superstar; EURO 2024 presents the ideal platform.

Did you know? Edward Iordănescu's father Anghel coached the team to the World Cup quarter-finals in 1994 – their best performance at a major championship.

Qualifying Group J winners: P10 W10 D0 L0 F36 A2 Qualifying top scorer: Cristiano Ronaldo (10)

Pedigree EURO best: Winners (2016) EURO 2020: Round of 16, lost 1-0 to Belgium

Coach: Roberto Martínez Fernando Santos's replacement has made an impressive start as Portugal boss, overseeing a perfect qualifying campaign for the EURO 2016 winners. The Spaniard has also won over fans and players by learning to communicate in excellent Portuguese. He has built a group that will form the core of his squad in Germany, while also introducing new tactical ideas in the hope of extracting the max from the preternaturally talented players at his disposal.

Key player: Bruno Fernandes Portugal, in truth, have two key players: Fernandes and Bernardo Silva. The Man United man registered six goals and eight assists in qualifying, and Martínez seems to know how to make him tick – mainly through his partnership with Silva. They are the team’s maestros, cleverly combining, setting the tempo and bringing the best out of the players around them.

One to watch: João Neves The 19-year-old is widely regarded as Portugal's latest wonderkid. According to Martínez, the teenager took just two days to earn the respect of the Portugal dressing room, something he had "never seen before" in his career. Neves is a complete midfielder who can pass, press and dictate the pace, displaying maturity and character that have not gone unnoticed by Portugal's more experienced stars.

Did you know? Cristiano Ronaldo is in line for his sixth EURO finals appearance. The 39-year-old holds the record for most goals (14) and appearances (25) at the tournament. João Neves was not even born when Ronaldo started to shine for the Seleção at EURO 2004.

Group F fixtures vs Portugal (Leipzig, 18 June, 21:00) vs Georgia (Hamburg, 22 June, 15:00) vs Türkiye (Hamburg, 26 June, 21:00)

Qualifying Group E runners-up: P8 W4 D3 L1 F12 A6 Qualifying top scorers: Tomáš Souček, Václav Černý (3)

Pedigree EURO best: Winners (as Czechoslovakia, 1976), runners-up (as Czechia, 1996) EURO 2020: Quarter-finals, lost 2-1 to Denmark

Coach: Ivan Hašek A former central midfielder who captained Czechoslovakia at the 1990 World Cup, Hašek won 56 caps, scoring five goals. He also lifted six league titles with Sparta Praha, later playing in France and Japan. His coaching career includes spells at Sparta as well as clubs in France, Japan and the Gulf States, along with the Gabon and Lebanon national teams. The 60-year-old wants his charges to play positive attacking football.

Key player: Patrik Schick Joint-top scorer at the last EURO, Schick is capable of scoring with either foot and with his head, and always seems to be in the right place at the right time. He has plenty of experience and confidence, as demonstrated by his incredible long-distance strike against Scotland, which was voted Goal of the Tournament at EURO 2020. Schick will look to carry the momentum from his fantastic season with Bayer Leverkusen into these finals.

One to watch: Pavel Šulc The 23-year-old midfielder only made his senior international debut in March but is a hugely promising prospect. An agile and creative playmaker, he has scored regularly in the Czech league and was one of the key players in Viktoria Plzeň's run to the Europa Conference League quarter-finals. Hašek has labelled Šulc one of the future stars of his side.

Did you know? Czechia have won all three EURO penalty shoot-outs they have been involved in (including as Czechoslovakia). They have also converted all 20 spot kicks taken in those shoot-outs.

Group F fixtures vs Türkiye (Dortmund, 18 June, 18:00) vs Czechia (Hamburg, 22 June, 15:00) vs Portugal (Gelsenkirchen, 26 June, 21:00)

Qualifying 4th place in a Group A: P8 W2 D2 L4 F12 A18. Qualified via play-offs after beating Luxembourg and Greece Qualifying top scorer: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (4)

Pedigree EURO best: Debut

Coach:   Willy Sagnol   A multi-decorated player at club and international level, Sagnol takes a major step forward as a coach at this tournament. Using his enormous big-match experience, he found the right words to motivate his team for their qualifying play-offs. The 47-year-old has an air of authority and will give Georgia the confidence to travel to this EURO with a sense of ambition beyond merely being there.

Key player: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia The winger's acclaimed first season with 2022/23 Scudetto winners Napoli made Kvaratskhelia a role model for all his country's players. He reached double figures for goals in his second campaign too, at the vanguard of a group of Georgian players operating in top-five European leagues. One of the best dribblers in modern football, he plays as a left attacker for Napoli, but for Georgia often starts as a second striker with freedom to roam.

One to watch: Georges Mikautadze Georgia are far from being a one-man team. Alongside Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, Sagnol can count on creative midfielder Giorgi Chakvetadze from Watford and Karlsruher striker Budu Zivzivadze. But there is an extra sprinkling of stardust provided by French-born forward Mikautadze, who finished the season on loan at Metz from Ajax.

Did you know?   Georgia have qualified for the first time as an independent country, although three representatives of the nation won this competition's inaugural edition in 1960. That USSR team included Givi Chokheli, Mikhei Meskhi and Slava Metreveli, with Zaur Kaloev an unused substitute. Metreveli equalised in the final against Yugoslavia, also setting up the clinching goal. Overall, 11 Georgians have played at EUROs, including Murtaz Khurtsilava, Revaz Dzodzuashvili and Givi Nodia, runners-up in 1972, and Tengiz Sulakvelidze, likewise in 1988.

Group F fixtures vs Georgia (Dortmund, 18 June, 18:00) vs Portugal (Dortmund, 22 June, 18:00) vs Czechia (Hamburg, 26 June, 21:00)

Qualifying Group D winners: P8 W5 D2 L1 F14 A7 Qualifying top scorers: Kerem Aktürkoğlu, Cenk Tosun (2)

Pedigree EURO best: Semi-finals (2008) EURO 2020: Group stage Coach: Vincenzo Montella After two successful seasons in charge of Adana Demirspor in the Turkish Super League, Montella was named national team coach with three EURO 2024 qualifying matches still to play, leading Türkiye to the finals with victories over Croatia and Latvia and a draw against Wales. Having helped Italy reach the EURO 2000 final as a player, Montella will make his first appearance as a coach at the European Championship.

Key player: Hakan Çalhanoğlu Türkiye captain and one of the squad’s most experienced players, Hakan helped Inter win Serie A in 2023/24 after losing out to Man City in the 2023 Champions League final. The midfielder is preparing for his third EURO and could play a key role with his set-piece expertise, strong link-up play and fighting spirit.

One to watch: Arda Güler A precociously talented graduate of Fenerbahçe's youth academy, Güler joined Spanish giants Real Madrid at the beginning of the 2023/24 season. Born in 2005, the tournament debutant is poised to become one of EURO 2024's most exciting players thanks to his creativity, exquisite dribbling, vision and eye for goal.

Did you know? Türkiye were in the same group as Portugal and Czechia at EURO 2008. They defeated the latter in their final group matches in both 2008 and 2016, triumphing 3-2 and 2-0 respectively.

Veterans gather for their last big D-Day anniversary under the cloud of a new war in Europe

D-Day joint operation in Normandy

CAEN, France — For almost 80 years, the United States and Europe told themselves that a lasting postwar peace had been won here, in the bloody shallows and sands along 6 miles of Normandy beach.

On Thursday — the 80th anniversary of D-Day , perhaps the last major milestone for many of the invasion’s dwindling heroes — that peace in Europe finds itself shattered .

Replacing it are fears of another world war that until recently seemed outlandish, uncertainty about Washington’s European allyship that the Normandy landings cemented, and questions about the future of the Western alliance itself.

For many, the ideals that D-Day helped win are at risk of fading along with its survivors.

“I believe that freedom and democracy are definitely under threat,” D-Day veteran Harold Terens, 100, told NBC News on Monday.

He spent that day working as a radio operator mechanic based in Yorkshire, northern England, communicating with 60 P-47 Thunderbolt fighter planes flying over France — only 30 of which returned. Twelve days later he traveled to Normandy in person to transport freshly freed American prisoners of war back to England, and pick up newly captured Germans.

“It was one of the most disgusting things I’ve seen in my life,” said Terens, who lives in Lake Worth, Florida. “Bodies without arms and legs, bodies without heads — war is hell,” he added, referencing the quote first attributed to Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman, who fought on the side of the Union during the Civil War.

Harold Terens.

More than 150,000 Allied troops landed in Nazi-occupied France on June 6, 1944, including 73,000 Americans, 60,000 British and 15,000 Canadians. It was the largest amphibious invasion in history, a meticulously planned assault that altered the course of World War II — and the 20th century.

Around 4,500 Allies died, including some 2,500 Americans, in their historic bid to loosen Nazi Germany’s grip over mainland Europe.

And so for a few weeks every year, Normandy is transformed into a festival of remembrance, with cities, villages and cemeteries festooned with flags — including many American flags flown by French locals — while playing host to concerts, parades and ceremonies.

It’s not clear how many veterans are still alive. But some 150 Americans who took part in the monthslong Battle of Normandy, including two dozen D-Day veterans, are expected to make the trip to France this year, according to the American Battle Monuments Commission, the government agency overseeing cemeteries and monuments abroad.

The centerpiece will be a ceremony attended by President Joe Biden, his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Britain’s Prince William and other world leaders. Biden will give a speech about defending freedom and democracy.

“D-Day is a critical moment for President Biden to speak to what our collective security has done to deliver mostly a peaceful Europe since the second world war,” said Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., a friend of Biden and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. “This is a chance to demonstrate what I think President Biden has been so good at. It’s not America alone. It’s not America first, but America as a critical leader in the world and as the indispensable nation.”

Still, the stars are the veterans.

NBC News is spending part of the week traveling with a busload of 50 American vets who have been brought over by the Best Defense Foundation charity, based in California.

They are set to include Richard “Dick” Ramsey, aged 100, a coxswain aboard the USS Nevada as it fired shells into the D-Day battlefield and narrowly missed getting hit in return. Also expected on the bus is Richard Rung, 100, who ferried troops to Omaha Beach while hosing his fellow soldiers’ blood from the small landing craft.

The youngest D-Day veterans are in their 90s; for many this will be the last major milestone they see as this event begins to pass out of living memory.

For the French, the legacy of D-Day is more complex. There is the decadeslong veneration of their Allied liberators, but also lament for the 20,000 Normandy locals killed in the assault, with cities such as Caen razed to rubble.

Macron says now is the right time to acknowledge these memories. On Wednesday, the French  president is expected to emphasize this point at a ceremony in Saint-Lô, a city whose destruction in the battle was so complete that in 1946 Irish novelist Samuel Beckett named it “the Capital of Ruins,” a moniker that has become widely used since.

With questions over Washington’s long-term commitment to Europe, Macron has attempted to cast himself as a de facto leader on European security, calling for more defense spending and refusing to rule out deploying French troops to Ukraine — much to Moscow’s fury.

Veterans and world dignitaries gather in Normandy to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the landings.

It’s perhaps no surprise, then, that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not invited this year.

This presents an awkward juxtaposition for those involved. Many feel it would be untenable to include a Russian delegation while its soldiers wage unprovoked war on Ukraine, an attritional grind of tanks, troops and artillery whose scale evokes WWII itself.

At the same time, it is impossible to tell the story of Nazi defeat without the Soviet Union.

After Adolf Hitler reneged on a nonaggression pact and invaded the Soviet Union, the Red Army spent millions of lives fighting back, repelling the Nazi advance in what was a pyrrhic Soviet victory on the Eastern Front.

“It’s a very changed time,” said John M. Koenig, a veteran American career diplomat who served as ambassador to Cyprus and was posted in Belgium and Italy before retiring in 2015 . “The perception of Russia, and the way ahead, is far darker than it was back when we used to invite Vladimir Putin to the celebrations.”

“It’s a different Europe than it was,” he added. It is not “one of compromise, cooperation and common interests that we had hoped even, I would say, up until at least 10 years ago.”

Many in Europe fear that if Moscow’s aggression goes unpunished, other countries, such as the Baltic states and perhaps even Poland, could come into the Kremlin’s crosshairs.

Ukraine has been armed to the teeth by the West, receiving $50 billion of missiles, tanks and air defense systems from Washington. But many observers are nonetheless questioning the future of the Western unity.

Looming large is the American presidential election between Biden and Donald Trump, the former president and presumptive Republican nominee. Trump has previously suggested he would withdraw from NATO, and many Ukraine allies fear he could end support for its defense against Russia.

Compounding this, European Parliament elections this month look certain to herald victories for far-right and nationalist parties, some of which share Trump’s skepticism on the importance of helping Ukraine resist Russia’s invasion.

John Kelly, a retired four-star general and Trump’s longest-serving White House chief of staff, said in an interview: “People make the argument that American forces should come home. We made that mistake once after World War I.”

“Yes, our allies and partners need to do more for themselves and live up to their financial commitments,” added Kelly, who had a falling out with Trump. "But we tested isolationism once before, and it didn’t work. The rules-based world order works and if it’s going to work America must lead it.”

D-Day commemorations in France

Also testing Washington’s relationship with its historic partners is the Israel-Hamas war.

Israel faces accusations of genocide and possible arrest warrants in international court, leaving the country and its chief ally, the U.S., increasingly isolated on the global stage. They have both rejected the accusations.

Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip has killed more than 36,000 people, according to local officials, and the Palestinian enclave needs $40 billion in postwar reconstruction — the largest since 1945 — the United Nations estimates. Meanwhile, eight decades since the Nazi murder of 6 million Jews, the deadly Oct. 7 attack and its aftermath have stirred fears of rising antisemitism in the U.S. and Europe.

And yet, amid the horror both historical and contemporary, there are shards of light here, among the hedgerows and headstones of mild-but-overcast northern France.

Terens, the D-Day radio operator, has traveled back here to get married, at the age of 100, to his 96-year-old fiancee Jeanne Swerlin.

“Love is not reserved for the young,” he said. “We need a little action ourselves.”

Terens and Swerlin on their way to France last week.

The pair met in 2021, and 40 family members have traveled over from the U.S. for their ceremony and parade June 8. Most poignant will be those not able to attend in person.

“I’m spiritual, and I came here to invite all those soldiers buried on Omaha Beach, 9,836 of them, to my wedding,” he said. “I’d like them to attend in spirit. And I want them to know that they’re not forgotten.”
