W e've been thinking about history quite a bit these days. There's the history of watchmaking, and how it relates to so many aspects of our lives. The history of HODINKEE, and how much we've grown in a relatively short period of time. And the history of travel, and what its future could look like. There's a single thread weaving across these subjects that we keep returning to – involving transportation of the past, and how horological innovation was a driving force in its development over time – and that we'd like to share with you today.

For years, we've marveled over the beauty and impressive accuracy of the railroad-grade, lever-set pocket watches produced in fin-de-siècle America – these were some of the most elaborately decorated and technically impressive timepieces ever produced on American soil. We've also always been fascinated by the substance and style of products associated with the advent of commercial aviation in the late 1920s and early '30s, including the clocks carried in the luggage of early globetrotters. Although the concept of a GMT wristwatch was still a few decades off, and the idea of a worldtime wristwatch complication was still in its embryonic state in Louis Cottier's mind, early travelers required ways of telling time in transit, and the eight-day travel alarm clock was the solution.

These clocks were functional objets d'art , capable of telling the time and acting as an aide-mémoire for weary travelers. They have also become a source of fascination among the HODINKEE team, which is why, after stumbling upon a veritable stockpile of untouched vintage movements during a trip abroad a few years ago, we knew we had to take the opportunity to share them with the world. After years of development and a design process involving multiple iterations and prototypes, we're proud to introduce the HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock. It's a contemporary version of the classic clocks we've long appreciated, designed from the ground up at our New York office as a tribute to those early pioneers of travel.

What The Eight-Day Travel Clock

Means to hodinkee.

The HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock is the most recent development to come from our deeply rooted fascination with beautiful objects related to the passage of time. Its form is directly inspired by the vintage travel alarm clocks found on our personal desks, ones that we have traded among ourselves as gifts and tokens of appreciation. But its function remains identical to the clocks found in the luggage of the early adopters of air travel, and the movement is the equivalent to what would be found in the premium travel clocks of yesteryear.

At its simplest, the HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock is a manually wound mechanical clock with an eight-day power reserve and alarm functionality. The clock is easily portable, and its compact dimensions allow it to fit in the palm of a hand, in the pocket of a jacket, stowed away discreetly in an attaché or messenger bag, or at your bedside right at home. While the purpose of these clocks may have shifted away from being a utilitarian object on the cutting edge of society over the decades, we believe their design transcends the original form factor as a coherent expression of timelessness, fully able to be appreciated by today's watch collector.

Our clock highlights the key design elements shared between our favorite vintage examples. It's built from PVD-coated steel that has been upholstered by hand with goat leather dyed our signature shade of HODINKEE grey. The grey dial fades in its central portion, leaving behind stylistic cues that are both sophisticated and subtle. While the overall appearance of the clock was the result of careful consideration by our in-house design team, one of the most exciting details we have to share about the HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock has to do with its typeface.

travel watch hodinkee

Introducing Decimal

The HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock uses a typeface developed by world-renowned designer, avid watch collector, and friend of HODINKEE Jonathan Hoefler that is inspired by the unique lettering and numerals found in vintage wristwatches. The development of this specific typeface, called Decimal, was featured in the 2019 Netflix series Abstract: The Art of Design – you also might remember Hoefler from an episode of HODINKEE Radio that ran not long after its debut. Decimal was born out of a deep appreciation for vintage wristwatches – the same can be said for the creation of HODINKEE, so the partnership was a natural fit.

Decimal doesn't draw on any single timepiece or era as a source of inspiration. It instead incorporates the shared characteristics found across decades of watch design and distills them into a single articulate package that will strike vintage watch enthusiasts as warmly familiar. Take, for example, the flat top found on the four o'clock numeral and "A" in "8 DAY" on the dial of the HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock. Historically, you could find these unique flat tops on the numerals and letters of mid-century watches because dial makers and designers of the time had to consider the natural effects of ink and enamel on a dial. Creating a longer stroke on the characters, like the flat top of a 4, would manage the pooling effect of the liquid as it dried. These are the kind of historical details that captured Hoefler's eye, and they are what makes Decimal uniquely suited to appear on the dial of the HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock.

What's So Great About A Clock?

In the same way that a beautifully finished and exhaustively engineered wristwatch should be studied and cherished, a quality mechanical clock has a distinguishing presence that is unrivaled by nearly any other object. Placed at a position of importance in a home or office, a clock will demand your attention through its mechanical substance and charisma-filled appearance. The vintage travel alarm clocks that we've personally collected over the years are enormously captivating devices, full of little details and a distinctive horological spirit unlike anything else we've found. They offer an entirely different way of experiencing and appreciating the passage of time, and it's this exact feeling that we want to share with you today.

The travel alarm clocks we were inspired by were built by some of the finest makers and sold by brands like Hermès and Cartier, establishments that have long been synonymous with worldliness and sophistication. Although function-forward at their heart, the designs of these vintage clocks dripped with bold Art Deco flair. The HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock does away with the excesses of the era, resulting in a refreshing take on the genre that maintains the original tony spirit in a toned-down, grey design.

travel watch hodinkee

Mid-Century Design,

Contemporary sensibilities.

Although traveling is an inherent part of the HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock's story, there's something we'll admit up front: It's more likely than not this clock will remain at your desk. And that's perfectly alright – it's where the travel clocks we personally own live, because there is something so gratifying about keeping a mechanical clock at your desk. It's as much an antidote to the breakneck nature of today's world as it is a palate cleanser to the omnipresence of screens that have largely replaced the analog and mechanical. It is our genuine desire that the HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock will provide its owner with the same sort of clarity we've found with our clocks.

travel watch hodinkee

While sumptuously designed on the outside, the inner workings of the HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock are relatively straightforward, maintaining the same principles that have governed mechanical alarm clocks for over a century. A spring is wound, storing energy, and after the set time is reached, the energy is released at once, engaging a gear that swings a hammer back and forth against a resonating chamber or bell. The result is an alarm sound with a rich depth of tone that stands in clear contrast to the comparative chirping of a digital alarm.

travel watch hodinkee

HEAR THE ALARM

How It Was Made

Our vintage movements were originally built by a small Swiss manufacture named Pontifa, located in Les Ponts-de-Martel, in the canton of Neuchâtel. Founded in 1850, Pontifa produced movements used in everything from pocket watches to dashboard clocks, but its speciality was eight-day travel alarm clocks just like ours. Movements built by Pontifa were used by some of the most prestigious firms in watchmaking for decades, and to find any number of them in unused, practically new-old-stock condition is unheard of in the contemporary clock collecting community. To assist with the clock's physical construction, we are collaborating with one of the top and longest-tenured firms in today's industry that specializes in clocks and complications. That's why, despite the vintage movement inside, the HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock is not a museum piece. It is a fully functional tool built with thoughtful consideration for the particularities of contemporary watch collectors.

The Key To Ownership

(or how to care for your clock).

The HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock has a distinct weight to it, the kind that comes with a consummate construction. The solid quality of build might come as a surprise to those new to clock ownership; in fact, there are a number of attributes to the maintenance and care of these devices that might come as a surprise to those who haven't yet ventured into the space.

travel watch hodinkee

The HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock is set by a separate key that comes with each clock. The backside of the clock features two crown-like hexagonal arbors and three folding tabs, each one holding a specific function. The movement needs to be wound every eight days. After eight days have passed, the tab with no markings should be turned counterclockwise until tension increases, which signifies it is fully wound. To set the time, the key needs to be used to turn the arbor with the handset label counterclockwise. The other arbor sets the alarm time. Using the key, set the alarm counterclockwise – this direction is crucial, because turning the arbor in the opposite direction will damage the movement. After the alarm goes off, it will become fully unwound. To wind the alarm, turn the tab with the alarm bell engraving counterclockwise. The amount that the alarm is wound directly correlates with its volume, so be sure to wind it completely. The alarm ON/OFF tab will automatically switch to ON when the alarm is wound. An instruction manual with detailed guidelines for best use is included with each clock.

travel watch hodinkee

The Fine Print

There are very few objects we consider travel essentials today. In fact, our collective approach to packing is basically the lighter, the better. A watch on our wrist, a camera over our shoulder, and the clothes on our back are all we really need. We use those tools to tell stories about products and goods we're passionate about, and this clock is an explicit expression of that vision. We hope the HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock provides a new generation of collectors with the opportunity to enjoy a unique genre of watchmaking that we greatly appreciate, whether on the road or at home.

The HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock is exclusively available in the HODINKEE Shop for $5,900. Due to the limited quantity of movements available, only 96 examples will be built – no more, no less. And because each HODINKEE Eight-Day Travel Clock is crafted by hand, it takes time to make them perfect. We've secured a number of clocks for immediate delivery today, and more will be coming in shortly. Each clock comes with a numbered certificate, a handmade shell cordovan carrying case with a suede interior, and a three-year warranty. Expedited worldwide shipping is included with each order. Visit the HODINKEE Shop to learn more, or reach out to [email protected] with any questions.

The 15 Best Watch Rolls for Storing Your Timepieces

By Karlton Miko Tyack Updated February 19, 2024

Looking for a watch roll to use for storing or traveling with your watches? Here are some awesome options to choose from.

The 15 Best Watch Rolls for Storing Your Timepieces-1

Watch rolls are one of the most convenient storage solutions for your timepieces . They allow you to safely carry your watches with ease. If you’re on the lookout for one, we’ve rounded up the 15 best watch rolls right here!

Out of all the different ways to keep your watches, rolls are an excellent choice when considering efficiency.

They don’t take up much room, whether they’re sitting in your closet or in your suitcase. In fact, if you travel often, you should keep your wristwatches in a watch roll when they aren’t on your wrist.

That being the case, many out there will tell you not to skimp out when it comes to protecting your investments. While that’s true, watch rolls come at all price points, many of the cheaper ones are just as protective as their luxury counterparts.

We’re not here to try and convince you to spend thousands, or even hundreds, of dollars on a roll. While our choice 15 watch rolls come in at different price points, all are perfectly effective.

Whether you want to invest in a designer unit or are looking for a no-frills watch roll, all styles and budgets are represented on our list!

15 Best Watch Rolls

From canvas to leather, two-watch capacity or more, the following rolls are presented in no particular order.

Crown and Buckle Hilmar Roll

Crown and Buckle’s Hilmar Roll is made of durable yet supple leather and lined with luxe suede, so your timepieces don’t get scratched up.

The 15 Best Watch Rolls for Storing Your Timepieces-2

On the style front, the Hillmar is a beautiful mix of textures: The granular exterior, the leather wrap-around cord topped with a polished wood toggle, and the brass eyelet. This American-made artisanal watch roll comes as a four-capacity or six-capacity unit.

One downside is that it’s often out of stock and sells out pretty quickly when it does get restocked, so you’ll have to keep tabs on its availability.

Bennett Winch Watch Roll

The craftsmen at London-based Bennett Winch take a hands-on approach in every stage of the creative process, including hand-picking the cowhides.

One of the reasons their watch rolls are so pricey is the manpower and time required to craft each one.

The 15 Best Watch Rolls for Storing Your Timepieces-3

If it’s in your budget though, these are really cool units, not just because of the high-grade raw material, but the smart hexagonal design.

That added complexity gives it a fancy look and provides structure and protection, ensuring it won’t roll away if you drop it.

It even opens up “ceremoniously,” with a flat-bed preparation area, a “suede carpet” roll-out for your watches.

If you love the structured design, but don’t need it in hand-picked Tuscan leather or built by master craftsmen, our next entry from Amazon is built from a similar template.

QWATCHBRANDS Watch Roll

At a fraction of the price of the Bennet Winch Watch Roll, the QWATCHBRANDS roll from Amazon offers a similar hexagonal shape.

The 15 Best Watch Rolls for Storing Your Timepieces-4

It’s made of full-grain Napa leather, with a napped velvet interior and snap buttons.

Honestly, if you weren’t comparing it to the previous entry, it would impress in style, design, and protective qualities.

Barton Canvas Watch Roll

Thanks to their great prices and quality watch accessories, Austin-based Barton is a fan-favorite among the watch community.

Their canvas watch roll is built practically, focusing on protection and function, but that’s what makes the style so attractive.

The 15 Best Watch Rolls for Storing Your Timepieces-5

Like a waxed jacket, it’s impressively waterproof , sports a rugged texture, and even comes with a flat leather wrap-around cord to round out its outdoorsy aesthetic.

It fits up to five 46mm watches. You can easily find this roll in the $40 range.

Bamford Aluminum Watch Roll

Bamford London is a luxury accessories company with a number of super slick and well-designed rolls that you should check out if you’re looking to really invest in protecting your watches.

The 15 Best Watch Rolls for Storing Your Timepieces-6

We’re highlighting the aluminum roll because of its uniqueness, excellent protective qualities, and ease of use. It sports a clean and contemporary look, like a modern business accessory.

With a bike pump-inspired design, opening and closing this tank of a watch roll is easy — you simply slide the outer shell in and out.

Rapport Soho Denim Roll

Many of high-end brand Rappaport’s watch rolls can actually be found on Amazon , but their Soho Roll is especially distinct, sure to catch the eye of you denim lovers out there.

The 15 Best Watch Rolls for Storing Your Timepieces-7

The outside is a light wash canvas, and the inside is soft Italian suede.

My favorite part about this unit is that it’s modular. Altogether, it’s a three-watch unit, but you can remove the middle seat to use it as a one-watch holder or transform the mother ship into a two-watch roll.

Mirage Faux Leather Roll

The Mirage Faux Leather Roll is another bang-for-your-buck option, especially for those of you opposed to buying real leather.

The 15 Best Watch Rolls for Storing Your Timepieces-8

The interior separators are sturdy and ensure all three watches don’t bang around. Meanwhile, the functional flat-base design keeps it from rolling off surfaces and almost makes it look like a fancy sunglasses case.

It also offers a level of personalization since it comes in so many different colors, including three shades of black, royal green, and a classy “espresso” shade.

Hodinkee Travel Tube

The Hodinkee Travel Tube is a hand-made leather watch roll with a soft suede interior. Unlike most watch rolls, it doesn’t have individual seats for your timepieces.

The 15 Best Watch Rolls for Storing Your Timepieces-9

This provides a bit of flexibility regarding how many watches you can fit in this roll.

It will all depend on the sizes of the “passengers.” And while leather chords look cool, this holder features a buckle in either steel or brass for extra security.

I also think it makes it look pretty upscale, especially since it’s paired with such good leather.

Like the Crown and Caliber Hilmar, you may have to put yourself on a waitlist for this popular accessory.

Wolf British Racing Green Watch Roll

Like Rappaport, Wolf is a high-end watch accessories brand with watch rolls easily found on Amazon .

Collectors especially covet the British Racing Green Watch Roll because of its high-end emerald hue. It’s like the iconic Tiffany blue for gearheads. Whether it’s on a car, leather or something else, you gotta love British green.

The 15 Best Watch Rolls for Storing Your Timepieces-10

The leather is beautifully pebbled, with hand-pressed gold foil lines and gold hardware throughout.

You can actually remove the roll that you wrap your watches around comes with separators, so you can choose to give your timepieces separate seats or not — one of its most unique and handy features.

IFL EPI Leather Watch Rolls

This elegant and fashion-forward IFL watch roll is constructed from epi-leather, a textured leather originally created by Louis Vuitton (and still highly associated with the brand).

The 15 Best Watch Rolls for Storing Your Timepieces-11

It’s adorned with a clean, almost woodgrain-like pattern, which is practical because it keeps the leather from cracking over time, even with minimal maintenance.

The inside has an Alcantra lining, a suede-like material usually used in automotive applications.

IFL Camo Roll

One more entry from IFL, this Camo Roll is definitely for a gent with specific tastes.

The aesthetic has a sort of 90s brand grooviness about it since the camo is orange, and the pattern shapes are more akin to a lava lamp than camo.

The 15 Best Watch Rolls for Storing Your Timepieces-12

If this is your style though, know that it’s no cheap fashion product. It’s handmade in Tuscany and built with Saffiano leather, a full-grain hide with a cross-hatch and wax finish that makes it highly scratch-resistant and easy to keep clean.

W&S Leather Watch Roll

The W&S Leather Watch Roll is built with the same convenient and easy soft-structure architecture as the Barton.

The 15 Best Watch Rolls for Storing Your Timepieces-13

It has an uncommon inside-out look since the exterior is made of a softer material, while the inside and outer edges are leather.

The Scottish wool variation is unique and soft, though both the wool and canvas variations will effectively safeguard your watches from dust and scratches.

Aukura Fabric Sponge Watch Roll

Looking for a no-frills but competently protective watch roll at a low price?

The 15 Best Watch Rolls for Storing Your Timepieces-14

The Aukura Fabric Sponge Watch Roll holds up to five watches, keeps them safe with its hard shell, and carries them securely with its sponge pillow interiors.

Typically less than $40, this guy is waterproof, shock-proof, and even has a side handle.

Lucrin Jewelry Pouches

If you’re looking for a seriously bespoke watch roll, Lucrin can build you a high-quality, personalized, and downright chic storage solution. Keep in mind that this is 100% a luxury option.

The 15 Best Watch Rolls for Storing Your Timepieces-15

You can choose from a one-capacity unit all the way up to an eight-capacity, from smooth leather, granular leather, or vegetable tanned leather, and depending on the material, up to 21 color options.

You can even add a monogram and choose the stitch color.

Kukiworks Watch Rolls

Kuki is an independent watch accessories designer that’s been low-key popular in watch forums all over the internet for a few years now.

The 15 Best Watch Rolls for Storing Your Timepieces-16

They’ve attracted a fanbase of watch collectors disenchanted by the fact that watch rolls are often overpriced.

Their six-pocket units are well-sewn at a reasonable cost per material. Whether you choose leather, denim, or even velvet variation, these hand-made pieces are chock-full of indie-cool-factor charm.

Their website hasn’t been up for some time, but they’re operating out of Etsy and Instagram.

Which Watch Roll Suits Your Needs?

Unless you’re literally a one-watch man, you might want to consider trying out a watch roll — especially if you’re a traveler.

Again, the entry-level options we’ve highlighted on our list are efficient and low-priced.

Who knows, if it ends up being beneficial to your lifestyle, you just might end up upgrading to a higher-end one (which may be unnecessary, but then again, a lot of fun hobbies are!).

In today's episode, I tapped our style editor Malaika Crawford, client advisor Rich Fordon, and video producer Jonathan McWhorter for a Q&A. Some of the questions we take on:

  • What other brands should release a Cartier Privé-style collection that taps into its heritage, and which brands should not;
  • Our thoughts on the TAG Heuer x KITH Formula 1;
  • Whether brands and stylists have ruined watch spotting at red carpet events like the Met Gala;
  • Finally, Since Rich was on his way to Geneva for the spring auctions, we talk about how to navigate the auction world.

Before we get to the Q&A, we also touched on our 21st Century Fantasy Draft from a few weeks ago. We announce the winner, and then Rich and Malaika tell us about all the amazing watches from the past 24 years we should've included.

After the game, Clark said "I'll be good," when asked about her availability moving forward.

The Fever remained winless Monday in a hard-fought game against the Connecticut Sun. Indiana lost, 88-84, though the Fever held a lead midway through the fourth quarter, and even tied the game at 84 with 30 seconds to play. Clark scored 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 3 of 7 from 3-point range.

She made all four of her free throw attempts and added five assists, three rebounds and committed five turnovers. She also was called for five fouls.
