  • How can I keep track of safety and security conditions abroad?

1. Travel Advice and Advisories

Travel Advice and Advisories give you official Government of Canada information and advice on situations that may affect your safety and well-being when you are travelling or living outside Canada. They may include an advisory for a country or region where security or health conditions have changed.

Anyone planning to travel or live outside Canada should read the Travel Advice and Advisories for their destination(s). Anyone already outside Canada should keep up with updates made to their destination's Travel Advice and Advisories.

How are Travel Advice and Advisories developed and maintained?

We analyze trends and incidents affecting international travellers, monitor world events and collect updated reports from different sources. We use this information to update the Travel Advice and Advisories on situations that may affect your safety and security when you are travelling or living outside Canada.

How often are Travel Advice and Advisories pages updated?

The pages are updated regularly and revised as security or health conditions in a country or region change.

The decision to travel is yours alone. Following the Government of Canada’s official travel advice will enable you to make well-informed decisions for your personal safety and security.

2. Risk Levels and Travel Advisories

A risk level is our official measure of the safety and security of a destination, country or region. There are four risk levels:

Exercise normal security precautions

Exercise a high degree of caution

Avoid non-essential travel

Avoid all travel

Take similar precautions to those you would take in Canada.

There are certain safety and security concerns or the situation could change quickly. Be very cautious at all times, monitor local media and follow the instructions of local authorities.

IMPORTANT:  The two levels below are official Government of Canada Travel Advisories and are issued when the safety and security of Canadians travelling or living in the country or region may be at risk.

Your safety and security could be at risk. You should think about your need to travel to this country, territory or region based on family or business requirements, knowledge of or familiarity with the region, and other factors. If you are already there, think about whether you really need to be there. If you do not need to be there, you should think about leaving.

You should not travel to this country, territory or region. Your personal safety and security are at great risk. If you are already there, you should think about leaving if it is safe to do so.

A Travel Advisory is issued by the Government of Canada when it assesses that the security or health situation in a country or region poses a significant threat to the personal safety and security of Canadians travelling or living there. This could be caused by the threat of terrorism, civil unrest, war, rebellion, a natural disaster, political instability or a health emergency.

We monitor safety and security conditions in over 230 destinations worldwide, particularly in those for which we have issued Travel Advisories. As new information becomes available, the level of risk is reviewed, and a Travel Advisory may be issued, upgraded, downgraded or removed.

If a Travel Advisory is issued for your destination, it may affect your travel insurance. Make sure you understand any terms and conditions in your insurance policy related to Travel Advice and Advisories from the Government of Canada. See  Travel insurance  for more information.

Travel advisories: Here's what Canadians should know this holiday season

The holiday travel season is officially underway, but before you embark on your highly anticipated trip, it’s important to take note of travel advisories issued by the Canadian government.

Global Affairs Canada says it analyzes trends and incidents affecting international travellers, monitors world events and collects updated reports from different sources to come up with its travel advice and advisories. They are available online at travel.gc.ca.

Patricia Marques, a travel industry expert and managing director of retail and travel call centres for CAA North & East Ontario, said she always recommends that people visit the website before they book a trip.

“The Canadian government issues those travel advisories to make sure that Canadians make informed decisions so they travel safely,” Marques told CTVNews.ca in a recent interview.

WHERE ADVISORIES ARE CURRENTLY IN PLACE

The guidance warns Canadians to exercise caution in certain places due to risks like crime, the threat of terrorism and unstable political conditions and to avoid some places altogether.

Some destinations also include regional advisories, meaning the risk level for travellers depends on a specific region of a given destination.

Currently, there are 21 destinations that are categorized as destinations where Canadians should “avoid all travel.” They include Russia, Ukraine, Yemen, Sudan, Iraq, Syria and Venezuela.

For example, travellers are advised to avoid all travel to Venezuela due to the “significant level of violent crime, the unstable political and economic situations and the decline in basic living conditions, including shortages of medication, gasoline and water.”

The travel advisory also notes the security environment is “volatile” at the border between Venezuela and Guyana due to an ongoing territorial dispute over the Guayana Esequiba region . The Canadian government is recommending that people do not discuss the dispute and to monitor local media to stay informed on the evolving situation.

  • The information you need to know, sent directly to you: Download the CTV News App

There are nine destinations where Canadians are advised to “avoid non-essential travel.” Nigeria, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip are some of those destinations.

In Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, for instance, officials say there are varying levels of risk depending on the region “due to the ongoing regional armed conflict and the unpredictable security situation.”

People are advised to avoid all travel to the Gaza Strip, avoid all travel to the parts of the Golan Heights that border Syria, east of Highway 98, and to avoid all travel within five kilometres of the border with Egypt, Lebanon and large parts of the West Bank.

Meanwhile, there are 92 destinations where Canadians are advised to “exercise a high degree of caution.” France, Egypt, China, Thailand, Brazil, Vietnam and Cuba are among those listed.

In Cuba, people are advised to exercise a high degree of caution due to shortages of basic necessities including food, medicine and fuel amid the decades-long U.S. trade embargo on the Caribbean country .

TRAVEL TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND

In addition to minding safety risks, it’s worth noting that travel insurance will not cover you if you’re going somewhere where a travel advisory is in place, Marques said.

“It's the most important thing that anybody can pack,” she said.

“Whether you're doing a road trip, or flying somewhere abroad, medical insurance is just essential because the cost of medical treatment abroad is quite a lot more than what we pay of course here in our system.”

Marques recommends emergency medical travel insurance to not just those travelling abroad, but also people travelling within Canada since certain kinds of treatment may be covered in one province or territory, but not elsewhere in the country.

If you’re unclear about what measures you should be taking before going to a specific destination, she also recommends using a certified travel consultant “who really knows the ins and outs.”

Another international travel tip to keep in mind? Make sure to register with Global Affairs Canada , Marques said, even if you're going to the United States or a Caribbean island, to let them know where you're going to be in case of an emergency or a conflict or natural disaster breaks out.

Marques stressed the importance of putting in time and energy to be thoroughly prepared for any trip.

“There's so many things and wonderful destinations that are out there, but be aware of where you're travelling, do the research before you go, make sure you have travel insurance to cover you.”

M.-J. Wason, Consular Program Manager in Ethiopia

travel.gc.ca ethiopia

M.-J. Wason joined Global Affairs Canada in 2001 and is now the Consular Program Manager in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Her work has taken her around the world, to Thailand, Ghana, Indonesia and Trinidad and Tobago, and exposed her to a broad range of consular cases. In many high-profile cases, she has helped Canadians who have been detained or who have been in serious accidents.

“In some cases, the entire embassy gets involved and it is truly amazing when we can all work together towards one goal. Officers whose jobs are not related to consular work will drop what they are doing and help us find a solution. Bringing together different perspectives from the embassy’s Canadian and local staff has not only helped us to resolve complicated cases but has also been an enriching experience for all of us.”

Consular officers don’t only help people with serious problems that receive public attention. Canadians travelling or living abroad often get tripped up by small things and may need some help.

“When interacting with clients, I try to put myself in their shoes. I understand how easy it can be for people to be disoriented by the situation, especially when they are in another country. I have had cases where people came to the embassy, distraught that they had lost their travel documents or had experienced other smaller problems, only to be reassured by our consular officers and finally be able to find the solution themselves.”

Envr 1301 nathan bendele, activity 3.1 – human population.

  • Country name, Canada
  • Birth rate, 9 per 1,000
  • Death rate, 8 per 1,000
  • Population growth rate (rate of natural increase), .1 percent.
  • Life expectancy for males and females, 80 males, 84 women,
  • Fertility rate (average number of children per childbearing-aged female), 1.4
  • Gross National Income (GNI), 57,820
  • Birth rate, 32 per 1,000
  • Death rate, 6 per 1,000.
  • Population growth rate (rate of natural increase), 2.5 percent
  • Life expectancy for males and females, 63 males, 69 females.
  • Fertility rate (average number of children per childbearing-aged female), 4.1
  • Gross National Income (GNI), 2,800

Of the two nations picked, Canada is more developed while Ethiopia is the much less developed. When you look at birthrate between these two nations, it is not close at all between the two. Canadas birth rate is 9 per 1,000 people while Ethiopia’s is 32 per 1,000. Being a lot less developed than Canada, Ethiopia has a higher birthrate for social customs reasons and also less opportunity for access to contraceptives and other sources, which is reported by PRB (Admassie, et al 2017). This can also be blamed for poor economical reasons within the nation. Canada has a lower birthrate because of more access to medical care and products that help with contraception. Canada has different social customs and is a noticeably safer country than Ethiopia for women according to The Government of Canada, (https://travel.gc.ca/destinations/ethiopia). Ethiopia has a noticeably higher death rate than Canada. Just as mentioned about economic struggles, the higher death rate can be blamed on poorer conditions throughout the nation. When compared to Canada, a very well-developed nation. The population growth rate for Ethiopia is 2.5 percent while Canada is an astoundingly low 0.1 percent. This can be associated with better medical care and contraceptive availability, different social customs, and a noticeably better healthcare system. The life expectancy for males and females in Ethiopia is noticeably lower than Canada. Men and women in Ethiopia on average do not live to 70 while in Canada, they live to at least 80 on average. The difference in health conditions between each nation can be seen by this. The fertility rate in Ethiopia is very high at 4.1 compared to 1.4 in Canada. The difference in social customs in Ethiopia along with as mentioned before, harder access to contraceptives is responsible for more pregnancies. Health clinics and other medical services also being more difficult to gain access to can also be another reason to blame on this. Compared to Ethiopia, in Canada gaining access to medical services and contraceptives is much more doable. The GNI of Ethiopia is 2,800 while in Canada, it is 57,820. Thanks to these numbers, it isn’t hard to figure out that Canadas people and businesses make more money. That is why Canada is the more developed nation of the two while Ethiopia is a not very developed nation. A more developed nation with a better healthcare system that is a lot more accessible to the public is a massive reason why Canada is a much more developed nation than Ethiopia currently is.
