10 things YOU MUST do in San Pedro!

July 3, 2021 By Natasha Stuart 9 Comments

The Truck Stop in San Pedro, Belize

If you’re thinking about visiting Belize and are wondering what are the top things to do in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye — I can help you with that. As a local, I’ve lived all my life on “ La Isla Bonita ” and I can steer you on the right path.

Related: 3 perfect days in San Pedro & Top Things to Do in Belize

The activities recommended here are San Pedro-specific, they range from snorkeling at Hol Chan to sailing to a sandbar, and from eating at top restaurants to taking cooking lessons for traditional Belizean foods. By following my suggestions, I guarantee that you’ll have a great time during your vacation.

Top things to do in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

1. go snorkeling or diving.

Shark Ray Alley, Hol Chan

Belizeans are very proud of having the second-largest barrier reef in the world. Because who wouldn’t? Therefore, if there’s anything you absolutely must do when in San Pedro, it’s experience the Belize Barrier Reef . This can be done by snorkeling or diving. My favourite snorkel spots are the  Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Mexico Rocks! Check out Cari’Bean tours for deep sea fishing/ snorkeling, which also includes a BBQ lunch on a secluded island.

Deep sea fishing in Belize

We are also well known as a top fishing destination in Belize . We have a variety of options, from deep-sea fishing to fly fishing, to spearfishing to simply fishing off a dock. You’ll enjoy fishing here, whether you fish to eat your catch or you prefer recreational, catch-and-release fishing. Check out Go Fish Belize (Abby Marin) for fly fishing and deep-sea fishing trips.

3. Visit the Truck Stop

The Truck Stop in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

The Truck Stop is one of my favourite places to hang out in Ambergris Caye . It’s a food truck garden, fully equipped with a bar, ice cream shop, and POOL. They keep things interesting all throughout the week: there’s outdoor movie nights every Wednesday and Saturday, and trivia and other fun games on other nights (follow their social media for updates). It’s also a great spot to watch the sunset. There is something for people of all ages, bring family, bring a date, bring friends. It’s just awesome, trust me.

4. The Belize Chocolate Company

The Belize Chocolate Company

Every weekday, through classes, you have the opportunity to learn how the Belize Chocolate Company makes their chocolates. And if you don’t get a chance to take a class, at least stop by to have some. They have an entire boutique full of variety, including vegan and gluten-free options. You can also try chocolate coffee, tea, shakes, cookies, brownies, and cheesecake…you can get carried away, you’re on vacation. Try the chocolate, take some home, and have your friends try it. The more you know about this place, the more you will love it, just like the rest of Belize.

5. Explore San Pedro by golf cart or bike (+ visit Secret Beach, maybe?)

Yoga in San Pedro Belize

The island is bigger than you think, even bigger than I imagine, sometimes. Therefore, you should find some mode of transportation to fully explore the island. I recommend renting a golf cart but renting a bike also works.

For a fun day, grab some friends and make the journey to Secret Beach . There are beach bars, restaurants, and a nice BEACH ! I know we live on an island and you’d expect beaches everywhere but sadly that’s not the case since we’ve had much erosion over the years.

If you prefer peace and quiet, Akbol Yoga retreat is one of my favorite getaways. They have yoga classes every morning and the food and drinks there are delicious. If you prefer to be alone, they have a huge dock where you can take your yoga mat and do your own practice. You can also go swimming or relax on the hammocks on the beach.

6. Painting Workshop

Painting at Belizean Melody Art Gallery

If you like painting, Melody at Belizean Melody Art Gallery can hook you up with a unique Belizean painting workshop. This is a fun activity as a date or group activity. The classes are for adults and kids. If you think you can’t paint, they will show you how anyone can be an artist!

7. Drink with the locals!

Belize Panty Ripper Drink

San Pedro’s nightlife is legendary ! Have a few drinks or have many – you’re on an island, let loose, have fun, dance until your feet hurt, and stay up until the sun rises. It’s okay, you’re on vacation.

Bars are not difficult to find in these parts, but I have my favourites. These are my personal preferences during the week, if you go to any of these, we might even meet:

  • Monday: Half off wine at Red Ginger at The Phoenix
  • Tuesday: $10 wine at Wine de Vine and Sushi night at Blue Water Grill
  • Wednesday: Half off champagne at Red Ginger, Ladies Night at Pedro’s Inn.
  • Thursday: Chicken Drop – a must for your first time on the island, Sushi at Blue Water grill then Lola’s Probably
  • Friday: Anything on Front Street – And half off wine at Red Ginger
  • Saturday: Any bar on Front Street
  • Sunday: Wayo’s, Sandy Toes, Playa Bar, Crocs, Truck Stop

Additionally, for watching sports, try Lola’s Pub and Crocs Sunset, and if you want to have drinks on the beach, try Wayo’s, Sandy Toes, or Playa Bar.

8. Eat Local

Sushi Night at Blue Water Grill

There are a few places you can eat local , try El Fogon or Brianna’s deli or ask any local Belizean where they recommend. You can even have a private chef come over and make you a home-cooked meal. You haven’t been somewhere until you have eaten like locals. Take every opportunity to try authentic Belizean cuisine.

My personal favourite restaurants are Blue Water Grill, Elvi’s Kitchen, El Fogon, and Wild Mango’s.

Sushi Tuesday and Thursday at Blue Water Grill is an island favourite. You’ll see tourists and locals indulging in sushi nights side by side. If you’re intrigued, I recommend that you make early reservations. They also have an awesome wine list and they are right on the beach!

If you’re looking for good coffee spots, try Lavish Habit or The Junction.

9. Get on a boat — for a sunset cruise or to go to a sandbar

Sanbar in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

You can have your own private experience at one of our sandbars: get a boat, grab food, drinks, and music, and go have an amazing time.

Another one of my favorite activities in San Pedro is sunset cruises. Being on a boat and witnessing the transition from day to night is magical.

Catamaran cruises can either be done as full-day tours which include snorkeling or just the sunset cruise option. An awesome group experience is to have dinner on Seaduced by Belize’s houseboat. It is a great place for an intimate, beautiful celebration or engagement.

Other catamaran tours I can recommend are Lady Leslie, Yolo party boat, and Tuff E Nuff tours. Each of these can be rented out privately or you can join a group, which is always fun since you never know who you might meet.

With my suggestions above I am not discrediting any other boating experience, the ones I mention are just those that I have personally experienced. I actually don’t think you can make a bad decision on any of the boat tours, as long as you read the reviews and know what you are interested in getting from the experience.

10. Food Tours

Belize Food Tours in San Pedro

Food tours are a relatively new and fun thing to do in San Pedro. Exploring our island and Belize through Belizean cuisine is both delicious and educational – you learn to make some of our local dishes and eat them after.

Bonus: Day Trips from Ambergris Caye

The 10 activities and tours mentioned above are in or near the island. If you’re interested in easy day trips from Ambergris Caye , I recommend the following:

  • Visiting the Lamanai Maya Ruins , which includes a riverboat safari
  • Spending the day in Caye Caulker , Ambergris Caye’s laidback sister island.
  • Visiting the Belize Zoo to find out why it’s considered the world’s best little zoo
  • Birdwatching at the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Going on a Cave tubing and Zipline adventure

Its difficult to decide between Placencia or Ambrigis Caye for our first visit to Beliz. Thought about splitting our time between the 2 places. How would we travel between the two places, is there a ferry we could take? Thanks, Bg

As long as you’re visiting Belize for a week or more, you can definitely split your time between Placencia and Ambergris Caye. I would suggest taking local flights so that you get between places quickly (Placencia to San Pedro is about an hour). Otherwise, you would have to take a private shuttle from Placencia to Belize City (3 hrs) and catch a water taxi from there to San Pedro (1.5 hrs).

A Complete Guide to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize

San Pedro Belize

Founded in 1848, San Pedro is the colorful capital of Belize’s biggest island, Ambergris Caye . Way back in 1986, the world-famous singer Madonna visited San Pedro, which inspired her to write the hit song “La Isla Bonita,” which currently has over 85 million views on YouTube . The video for that song was filmed in San Pedro and many locals appear in the background behind the singer.

Officially, the population of San Pedro is only around 20,000 people, but Ambergris Caye is the most popular tourist destination in the country, bringing in hundreds of thousands of people every year. Locals are known as  San Pedranos , most of whose ancestors came from Mexico. Today, most people in San Pedro speak English as a first language but are conversant in basic Spanish.

San Pedro is a lovely town, and because it’s on an island, the most popular form of transportation is by bicycle or electric golf cart. San Pedro has everything a visitor might want, including resorts , hotels, high-speed internet, banks, shops, swimming pools, and even a gourmet farmer’s market. San Pedro has its own airstrip with regular connections to the mainland as well as a water taxi dock with connections to Belize City and nearby islands such as Caye Caulker .

And because San Pedro is a popular gateway to the nearby Belize Barrier Reef , it is home to fantastic seafood restaurants serving lobster, conch, fish, and other delights fresh-caught daily and prepared to order. San Pedro is also where you’ll find dive centers that rent equipment and offer PADI certification as well as dive/snorkel tour operators for trips to the reef, including the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley.

trips to san pedro belize

Popular activities in San Pedro include windsurfing, kiteboarding, sea kayaking, bird watching, fishing, sailing, snorkeling and scuba diving. San Pedro sits at the southern tip of the island, but most of the central and northern end is undeveloped, making it an ideal location for spotting birds and indigenous wildlife.

San Pedro is home to several exuberant festivals throughout the year, including a raucous Carnival, a Lobsterfest in June, and the International Costa Maya Festival in August, a week-long combination beauty pageant, street fair, and live music concert.

Because San Pedro is on an island, living expenses are much higher than anywhere else in Belize. Property prices for a beachfront condominium can exceed $500,000, and a one-bedroom apartment rental can exceed $1,000 a month. Electricity and gasoline are also more expensive in San Pedro.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is the main reason for the influx of scuba enthusiasts to the area. Book your boat trip and diving session in one of the world’s most acclaimed diving sites. See turtles, eels, sting rays and even sharks among the countless colorful fish and coral.

Go to the Ambergris Museum to learn about the Mayas who once populated this region and the area’s intriguing past as a pirate’s refuge. Visit the gift shop and refreshment stall.

The town has several other informative cultural complexes, including the Black & White Cultural Entertainment Center and the Belizean Melody Art Gallery. Relax with a beer at one of the many lively bars with views of the sea.

Locals, known as San Pedranos, speak Spanish, English, Kriol and Spanglish. The town has hot weather year-round with less annual rainfall than the rest of Belize. The dry season runs from January to early May.

Find the pretty town at the southern point of the island of Ambergris Caye, east of northern Belize. A small airport serves San Pedro and takes passengers to Belize’s main transportation hub, the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport.

San Pedro, Ambergris Caye – Travel Guide + Tips

Pinterest Graphic

After spending a few days in the southern jungles of Belize, the next stop on the trip was San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. I didn’t have a ton of information on hand before visiting Ambergris Caye. Through experience I found out exactly what to do, where to eat, where to stay and how to spend our time there, allowing me to bring you these these tips and travel guide for San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.

Here’s Visiting San Pedro, Ambergris Caye – Travel Guide + Tips:

Ambergris Caye

Getting to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

San Pedro, Ambergris Caye is located about 40 miles northeast across the Caribbean Sea from Belize City. After flying into Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE), you can choose from two different options to get to San Pedro.

  • Water Taxi – At the docks in Belize City, two different water taxi companies can get you to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. Both Ocean Ferry Belize or Belize Water Taxi can be booked online beforehand. The price is about $15 one way from Belize City.
  • Plane – The more expensive option is to take a short 15 minute flight from Philip Goldson International Airport. You can fly with Tropic Air or Maya Island Air , for around $60 per person.

Flying into Belize over the islands

Arriving to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

The airport is literally a landing strip in the middle of San Pedro with a very small room as the terminal. From here you can take a taxi to your accommodation, costing about $5 USD. Near the airport are golf cart rentals, which is the only means of transportation on the island.

Where to Stay

With a slew of accommodations in the town of San Pedro, deciding on a place to stay can be overwhelming.

I didn’t see anything cheaper than $40 a night while researching where to stay but the most budget-friendly options I found were hostels, private rooms or hotels in the middle of town.

  • Budget-friendly – Your best bet to find something cheap is using AirBnb . Check out the Zen Belize , owned by my friend Frank, or the Hotel Coastal Bay or Ambergris Sunset Hotel .
  • Mid-level budget – Ramon’s Village Resort or Isla Bonita Yacht Club
  • Luxury – Grand Colony Island Villas or Las Terrazas Resort .

trips to san pedro belize

I was so happy with our decision to lodge with Isla Bonita Yacht Club . The location was absolutely perfect in a quieter area but still close to the hustle and bustle of San Pedro. The resort offers a pool, grilling area, and a wide range of condominiums to choose from. All are fully equipped with a kitchen, including every utensil you’d need to cook a full meal, a comfortable bed, beautiful bathroom, living room, and an outdoor seating area.

Where to Eat

It’s important to remember that you’re on island time here in San Pedro so a lot of places don’t have posted hours.

  • Breakfast – Red Ginger or Estel’s Dine By the Sea , known as the place to go with its full-breakfast options and early-morning openings to accommodate the divers.
  • Casual – Mesa , The French Touch , Iguana John’s . The Truck Stop is an area on the way to Secret Beach that’s comprised of shipping containers turned food park. Tons of different eating options are available here and they’re open Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 9 PM.

  • Fine Dining – Casa Picasso or Hidden Treasure
  • Belize Food – Elvi’s Kitchen , Caliente Restauran . The Hungry Grouper must be on the list for traditional Belizean foods!

Tips & Things to Know for San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

Now that we’ve talked about the travel guide for San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, let’s discuss the important tips and things to know:

Transport to San Pedro, I couldn’t recommend more flying in rather than taking the water taxi. To this day it has to be the most gorgeous scenery I’ve ever flown over. If you’re lucky, you may even get to sit in the copilot’s seat!

Pilots Seat in Belize

Accommodations

For accommodations, it really depends on what type of vacation you’re looking for when visiting San Pedro in determining where to stay. If you’re on a budget, you can save a ton of money by staying a little inland but then you won’t have any sea views.

If you want to be near restaurants and such, I’d recommend staying within the town of San Pedro. Accommodations are available on the north side of the island but they were a little further away from the hustle and bustle than I would have personally preferred.

Me in front of the flowers and ivy at La Isla Bonita Yacht Club

Transportation

The only cars on the road in San Pedro are taxis or locals with a special permit. As far as transporting yourself around the island goes, definitely look into renting a golf cart! We had the best time zooming around the streets and onto the beaches.

Me in my golf cart on the beach

There are essentially only 3 streets running north to south in San Pedro so navigating them is super easy. Front Street is the more touristy area with many shops, restaurants and bars to choose from. If you cross the bridge by golf cart from south San Pedro to the north, you will have to pay a toll. Keep that ticket with you and show to the attendant on your way back so you can cross over to the south for free.

Visiting Secret Beach

I highly recommend spending at least a half day at Secret Beach but, the biggest tip I can give is to arrive early! We were able to snag a sea-front lounger since we arrived at around 9:30 AM. Even though most places don’t open until 10:30 or 11, we were served after arriving. Where you park your golf cart at Secret Beach determines which company you’ll be giving your business to for the day. We didn’t know this before pulling into Maruba Beach Klub’s lot but it worked out because I got to eat a bomb omelette right there on the beach.

Omelet on the beach at Secret Beach

According to a local we met, it’s a law in Belize that all of the docks are public. Because of that, you’re able to walk on just about every one you see. We strolled down one for the sunset and watched the pelicans sit and wait on boaters coming in with their catches.

trips to san pedro belize

And, the biggest tip I always give no matter where you’re traveling to, buy your liquor from a store instead of the restaurants and bars. We snagged two small bottles of rum and juice that lasted multiple days and it was the same price had we bought two drinks from a bar. Most accommodations allow you to bring your own drinks to sip on by the pool.

Simply put, San Pedro is the most crucial town in one of the most beautiful countries in Central America because of its history. Whether you want to relax, go diving or scuba diving, spend some time at the spa, go fishing, golfing, and even watch a boxing match, you will find endless things to do in San Pedro, Belize, and have the time of your life.

The Shark Ray Alley is located in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and is accessible by boat or kayak. At the entrance, you need to pay a symbolic fee. But beware, taking selfies and videos with the sharks is not permitted. The best time to visit is during the morning when the weather is cooler (so you don’t overheat).

A small note that this tour may not be for everyone, with some people getting just as much excitement from watching others brave enough to dive in.

14 Best Things To Do In San Pedro Belize: Swimming With Sharks

This reserve is a protected coral reef system and one of Belize’s most popular beach destinations. Most visitors stay only for a couple of hours, but there is so much more to this place.

Dive in the Great Blue Hole

Belize has several great spots for scuba diving and snorkeling, but one of the best is the Great Blue Hole. People describe it as “one of the best-kept secrets in the Caribbean.”

14 Best Things To Do In San Pedro Belize: The Great Blue Hole

This hole is located at the center of the Lighthouse Reef off the coast of Belize. It was created from the erosion of a limestone cave during the last ice age. The depth of this sinkhole is unknown because water shifts with the tides, but it is more than 300 meters deep—or 1/3 of a mile. The hole is basically in the shape of an ear canal, which makes for interesting photos.

I suggest you visit it towards the end of the dry season, between April and May, for favorable weather conditions.

Visit Bacalar Chico National Park

Ambergris St

Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve are one of Belize’s most important natural habitats for birds and small mammals and a nesting ground for the endangered green sea turtle. Along the shoreline, manatees can be seen in the shallow waters.

14 Best Things To Do In San Pedro Belize: Belize Ocelot

When I arrived at Bacalar Chico, I was blown away by the coastal paradise of calm waters, white sand beaches, and picturesque views. A well-maintained parking area with public bathrooms greeted me at the lagoon entrance. You can see local Belizeans and tourists fishing, boating, and swimming. The marine reserve ends where the white sand beaches begin.

It is possible to see jaguars and pumas as well as ocelots. Also, snorkeling in the marine reserve will bring you up close to colorful corals, fish, turtles, and manatees.

Visit the “Secret” Beach

7 Mls North // +5016655794

The Secret Beach used to be a local’s secret but is now less “secretive.” It’s located in the hills above San Pedro Belize, just past Rock House. Most taxi drivers know it as well as tour companies that offer tours around the island.

You can reach Secret Beach by golf cart or pay around $20 USD to take a daily shuttle, but I recommend getting a golf cart and doing it yourself. It’s more fun.

{image} Secret Beach {image}

There are a few little beach bars on the beach and a restaurant with piers out into the water for a great dining experience.

Plus, you get the best of both worlds with part of the beach shaded by trees and part out in the open to soak up some sun!

The spot is so popular; it’s actually generating enough buzz to make Belize a travel destination unlike no other. It is more than just a beautiful beach for sure! As you can see, the list of things to do in San Pedro, Belize is extensive, wait till you reach the end of this page.

Bring Your Kids To Boca del Rio Park

Boca del Rio (Beachfront) // +5012262286

If you are bringing your juniors with you, there are fun and engaging things to do in San Pedro, Belize, even for the pickiest ones. Boca del Rio Park caters mainly to children but recently has become a favorite for the local teens as well. This is a popular place for kids, parents, and teenagers because of its ideal location; one minute you are in the busy downtown of San Pedro, and the next minute you are relaxed on one of Boca del Rio’s beaches. Who says you can’t have it all?

14 Best Things To Do In San Pedro Belize: San Pedro Beach

Boca del Rio has two sandy beaches and is located in the northeastern part of the island. This beach area is also a great place to drop a hook and go snorkeling.

The nearby coral reef is home to many tropical fish, including angelfish, butterflyfish, parrotfish, angelfish, sergeant majors, and many others that you will encounter on your never-ending snorkel tour.

Visit The Marco Gonzalez Archaeological Reserve

5 miles South

One of the best things to do in San Pedro Belize is to visit Marco Gonzalez Archaeological Reserve. The place is located at the tip of Ambergris Caye and is surrounded by a dense jungle and red and black mangroves. It was officially discovered archaeologically in 1984, although locals knew about it long before that.

The Mayan village will catch your eye immediately. Here you can walk on raised walkways through the jungle, with views of canals and mangroves below, and wander through a reconstructed Mayan city. The sights are simply wonderful.

Reaching it is simple, just take a short boat ride from San Pedro and enjoy the sea breeze.

14 Best Things To Do In San Pedro Belize: Mayan Ruins

I find it very educational that an excellent archeologist guides you and explains everything. They are a little bit more expensive than most, but it’s totally worth it!

Ride the Streets on a Golf Cart

You are going to get used to seeing golf carts everywhere you go as you begin exploring San Pedro Belize. You’ll likely spot them wholly packed with people on their way to dinner or getting milk at the store!

There is nothing like exploring this town from an open-air vehicle that you can control and take you places that a car can’t.

14 Best Things To Do In San Pedro Belize: Golf Carts in San Pedro

Driving a golf cart is one of the most fun things to do in San Pedro. But the calmer and more pleasant way of getting around town any time of the day is on foot. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, bars, and places to visit, all within walking distance.

There are also several beaches and other attractions that can be reached on foot as well. But if you really want to see and experience the island to the fullest, you’ll want to rent a golf cart.

Dine at the Truck Stop

1 Mile North, San Pedro, Belize // +5012263663

If you reach here, it means your thirst for fun things to do in San Pedro Belize is not over yet! Make sure you reserve a night to dine at The Truck Stop, THE place to be in San Pedro. It is a collection of shipping containers that have been turned into a mini entertainment center with a restaurant, private washrooms, beach chairs, and umbrellas for public use and entertainment venues (like the 17.7 feet movie screen) to host everything from live music to full-length movies.

{image} The Truck Stop {image}

Try the New Haven-style pizza and Asian and Latin food, all made from local ingredients, and cool off with some ice cream.

The best part about visiting here is that you can crawl from bar to bar, visit each food stall, pop some beads for a ride on the Ferris wheel, and then catch the sunset with Batson’s view over your shoulder.

Sail to Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker is located a ferry ride away from San Pedro and is a much more relaxed alternative, full of seaside eateries, boutique stores, gorgeous beaches, and plenty of fun at the Split.

If you’re going in a bigger group, I suggest chartering a catamaran boat from SEAduced by Belize for a day full of underwater activities at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and a stop for lunch in Caye Caulker.

14 Best Things To Do In San Pedro Belize: Caye Caulker

But be aware that there are no hotels there, just seafront eateries, boutique stores, gorgeous beaches and a small fishing village which I recommend visiting.

Snorkel Hol Chan Marine Reserve

2 Barrier Reef Dr, San Pedro, Belize

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is one of the finest marine reserves in Belize. Like all of the country’s marine reserves, Hol Chan has been protected from fishing and other extractive activities since 1993.

Allowing for the replenishment of natural reefs, Hol Chan offers impressive coral formations in shallow water, fish sanctuaries, and underwater caves just outside San Pedro, which are only accessible by boat.

14 Best Things To Do In San Pedro Belize: Snorkeling

This site is one of the few marine parks in Belize where you can snorkel amongst a diverse array of creatures. You’ll see coral reefs and clear waters that are home to southern rays, parrotfish, nurse sharks, and much more.

And don’t worry if you have never snorkeled before; you can still experience the underwater world with help from a knowledgeable guide.

Tour The Belize Chocolate Company

Barrier Reef Drive, San Pedro, Belize // +5012263015

Add a flavor to your list of things to do in San Pedro Belize and take a tour in the Choco-World. Chocolate was a precious commodity and thus considered a drink of royalty. It was so revered that a beverage with cacao beans was the first thing to be sacrificed when human blood was needed for rituals.

So if you’re wondering what to do in San Pedro Belize — you should definitely visit the San Pedro Chocolate Company and experience their chocolate culture for yourself!

{image} Chocolate {image}

On a Belize private chocolate tour, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility and learn precisely how their 100 percent Belizean chocolate is made, from picking the cacao fruit to roasting and packaging the final product. You’ll even see the harvesting machines used in the cacao plantations.

While you’re there, I suggest buying some of their other products, such as caramel and jams, or check out their gift shop for more unique finds.

Shop At The Artisan Market

San Pedro, Belize

If you are headed to San Pedro Belize, it is highly advised that you make time to visit the artisan market. The market is packed within a small space, and many of the vendors have had their wares for decades.

This means that visiting this market will give you insight into the culture and traditions of the Ketchie People who sell their crafts in the area.

14 Best Things To Do In San Pedro Belize: Artisian Market

The market was a short walk from my hotel, and I ended up going back there twice. The first time I visited the market, I bought some incredible handmade rugs. The second time I went to the market, I purchased a spectacular wood carving.

There were plenty of things to buy in the market, and I definitely left with a few bags of souvenirs for my friends back home!

Painting Workshop at Melody Art Gallery

3103, San Pedro, Belize // +5012262787

If you like art, mark this place for your Things to do in San Pedro Belize List. Belizean Melody Art Gallery is a unique experience that hooks you up with a professional artist. You’ll get a step-by-step tour through drawing and painting, watercolor or acrylics, and let your inner artist admire.

Water Taxis & Ferry

Water taxis are small, 10-15 passenger boats that serve the coasts of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, taking passengers to and from the mainland of Belize City. In addition, they can be chartered, often with live music, for excursions along the coast.

14 Best Things To Do In San Pedro Belize: Water Taxi

There are two leading companies operating water taxis: Coastal Xpress, based in San Pedro Town, and Caye Caulker Water Taxi. Not your usual water taxi, if you board on while the live music plays.

Ultimately, you can use all these tips and create your tailored list of things to do in San Pedro Belize. Whether you’re here for the best beachside lodgings in the area or diving into the Blue Hole, sailing to Caye Caulker, San Pedro will quench the thirst of any traveler, particularly a foodie with a side of fun activities to do!

How To Get To San Pedro Belize: Everything You Need To Know

' src=

How to get to San Pedro Belize, the way we did it and ALL the other ways too!

We figured out how to get to San Pedro Belize on the fly. In the end, we did not do enough research and ended up taking the long way.

To save you some time, money, and effort, I’ve listed all the different ways to get to San Pedro Belize, no matter where you may be departing from.

San Pedro was one of my favourite destinations in all of Central America, and I really wish we could spend more time there. We just came from Mexico and were passing through to Guatemala. We already had plans for Christmas and New Year in Guatemala, so we couldn’t spend too much time in Belize. Which was a shame, to be honest.

trips to san pedro belize

Is it worth visiting San Pedro Belize?

San Pedro on Ambergris Caye is absolutely worth visiting. Like its neighbouring island, Caye Caulker, San Pedro has a very laid-back, Caribbean vibe. It’s a great stop for backpackers on a longer trip, vacationers, and people who just want a break from life and chill on a white sandy beach with a cocktail.

There are loads of different things to do, but the main reason people visit San Pedro (if not for the Caribbean lifestyle) is the Hol Chan Marine Reserve . A great place to see wildlife while snorkelling.

How to get to San Pedro From Belize City

This is the way most people will be making the trip. From Belize City. Let’s discuss the journey!

Arriving in Belize

I figured you know how to do this part. But let’s discuss it anyway. To get to Belize City, depending on where you’re coming from, you’ll likely have to fly. If you’re coming from the border with Mexico, the local bus would be your best bet.

In our experience, the taxi drivers that take you from the border to the nearest town are incredibly friendly and are happy to drop you off at the bus station. They also know the bust times from the top of their heads so all the information you need is available with them.

It’s also worth mentioning that they work with the government and have a set price for the trip. No scams there, unlike you get in Mexico.

trips to san pedro belize

Anyway, back to flying. No matter where you’re flying from, Belize City will be your destination.

✈️ Planning a trip? We ALWAYS use SkyScanner for flight ticket deals!

From the airport, you have two options:

Belize City to San Pedro by Plane

The easiest, but the least fun I’d say! Prices start at $175 for a round trip, which is not the most expensive ever, but it’s definitely more than the ferry. The $175 does include 1 checked bag up to 50 lbs (22.5kg).

Belize City to San Pedro by Ferry

The ferry is the cheaper and more adventurous option. You’ll take the ferry from the ferry port in Belize City so first of all, you’ll need to make your way down there.

There are two ways of doing so:

Get to the ferry by taxi

You can either pre-book a taxi or find one when you arrive. Either way, the price should be about the same, $35. The plus side to pre-booking a taxi is that you don’t have to haggle for a price, since taxis in Belize do not use a set meter. This could be stressful, although we never had any problems with drivers trying to overcharge us.

Nonetheless, we prefer pre-booking, just because we’re always sure someone is waiting for us to pick us up. It’s just peace of mind, really.

Get to the ferry by shared shuttle

Another good option to try and save a little money is to use a shared shuttle service. Especially if you’re travelling solo, this is the cheaper way of making the trip.

trips to san pedro belize

Keep in mind that you have to book these in advance as well, so make sure to book a spot before departure.

🚌 Book your shared shuttle here!

The ferry from Belize City to San Pedro

Once you’re at the ferry port, your bags will be taken by a porter who works for the ferry company. He will give you a part of a tag that is on your bag. Don’t lose this! If you have your ticket booked already, you can just wait for the boarding call at one of the cafes or shops.

The departures will be announced so if you’re early, you have time to get some snacks and such. Once boarding, show your ticket and off you get! All bags are colour-coded for the different destinations (San Pedro or Caye Caulker) so they’ll arrive at the correct spot.

The ferry goes to Caye Caulker first, since that is the closer of the two islands. The trip takes about 45 minutes. After a short stop to let passengers on and off, you’ll continue for another 30 minutes to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye.

Once you have arrived, your bags will be unloaded into a wooden cabin. There you hand over your piece of the tag, and voila! You’re in San Pedro!

How to get to San Pedro From Chetumal In Mexico

Back in December 2022, when I and Callie made this trip, we had to take a taxi to the border, cross the border on foot, take a taxi to the nearest town, take a public bus from there, take a taxi to the ferry, and then, finally, take the ferry to San Pedro.

This was all because the ferry only ran twice a week.

a ferry boat that takes you from Belize City to San Pedro Belize

But not anymore.

The trip is easier than ever! The ferry from Chetumal to San Pedro (and Caye Caulker) now runs daily in holiday seasons. Making the trip has not been this easy before.

In the off-season, the ferry runs Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Still loads of options.

To book a ferry ticket, simply go to the Belize Express Water Taxi website and fill in your information.

Make sure to be at the ferry terminal 90 minutes before departure to sort out customs and immigration. Make sure you have proof of payment of your entry fee (if applicable), and have CASH for a 500 peso exit fee each.

After you ‘pass’ the Mexican border, you hand your bag to one of the porters. Make sure you keep the tag they give you, as this is needed to retrieve your bag at San Pedro!

Then on the Belizean side, you’ll have to pay a $2.50 entry fee (port tax) as well.

To total journey with the ferry takes between 1 hour 30 and 1 hour 45 depending on weather conditions.

How to get to San Pedro From San Ignacio

The only difference between the trip from San Ignacio and Belize City is the initial journey to Belize City. From Belize City, it’s all the same.

To get from San Ignacio to Belize City there are three different options:

By public bus

By shared shuttle.

This is in order from cheapest to most expensive option.

The cheapest, but longest way to make the trip. The total journey will take up to 3 hours depending on how busy it is that day. After travelling all over Central America, it doesn’t sound bad to me! It will only cost $3-$5 which is a bargain for the duration of the trip.

trips to san pedro belize

Buses leave regularly and from very early on in the day. Find the full schedule here.

Buses depart San Ignacio from the Cayo Welcome Center.

Once you have arrived in Belize City, you will be at the bus terminal. From there you need to take a taxi to the ferry. This will, again, cost about $3-$5.

If you’re taking a bus I suggest leaving enough time to catch your ferry. Although there is a set bus schedule, this is Central America, and things rarely depart and arrive on time!

If you’re not travelling in high season you can just rock up and buy a ferry ticket on the spot.

A slightly more comfortable way of travelling. This is better if you have a set schedule and want to be as sure as you can that you arrive on time. Shared shuttles are a good option all over Belize and are widely available.

To book a shared shuttle, pick a date as the departure times are set by the companies.

Trips range from $40 to $125 depending on group size and if you want a shared or private shuttle.

The trip should take about 2,5 hours and will drop you off at the ferry to San Pedro.

trips to san pedro belize

Last but not least, you have the option to take a taxi all the way to Belize City. It’s a 2-hour drive so be prepared for a relatively high price. We were quoted $150 which is very high.

On the plus side, you will get dropped off right at the ferry port. I don’t recommend this option due to the steep price and the fact a shuttle (even a private one) is just as comfortable and about the same price.

How to get to San Pedro From Corozal

The most common way to make this trip is by taking yet another ferry. But this time from Corozal to Ambergris Caye. The trip is very straightforward since you’re already in Belize and don’t have to do any immigration stuff, unlike when you go from Chetumal.

The downside to this trip is that the sea is often a little choppy. The ferry runs once a day at 7 am, and you buy your tickets at the pier. Just search for ‘Thunder Bolt Water Taxi’ on Google Maps and you’ll be there in no time.

One-way trips cost $50 Belizean so $25 US.

The way we did it, which is A LOT longer than taking the ferry from here, is by taking the public ‘chicken’ bus to Belize City. It was not a bad trip, but by then we did not know about the ferry.

We would’ve missed it anyway which meant we would have had to spend a night there which wasn’t really an option since we made bookings for diving and a hotel already.

If you’re in the same boat, you’ll have to take the public bus from the bus terminal down to Belize City. A journey that took us about 3,5 hours and cost us $6 BZE.

You’ll end up at the bus station in Belize City, from where you can easily find a taxi to get you to the ferry. From there, follow the steps described in the ‘ From Belize City ‘ part of this post.

When You Arrive In San Pedro, Belize

Once you’re in the beautiful town of San Pedro, it’s time to get to your hotel. If you’re staying within the town it’s probably quite easy to walk to. If not, there are taxis in the shape of golf carts to take you to where you need to be.

Where to stay

No trip to San Pedro is complete without a place to stay, right? I mean, it doesn’t get cold at night, but sleeping outside is not very comfortable!

📍Budget Option – Sandbar Hostel

Part of the Sandbar Beachfront Restaurant and Bar. Great atmosphere, a pool, and airconditioned rooms for relatively cheap. This is where we stayed and had a great time.

🏠 Check out Sandbar Hostel here!

📍Mid-range Option – Best Western Grand Baymen Gardens

Best Westerns are always a good shout for mid-range accommodation. Nothing too fancy, but always good quality and in a decent location.

🏠 Book your room at the Best Western now!

📍Luxury Option – Margaritaville Beach Resort

When I said luxury, I meant luxury. Honestly, the fanciest, prettiest thing I’ve ever seen. It’s just perfect. If you think the Maldives are too far, go here instead.

🏠 Check out Margaritaville Beach resort here!

Where to eat

There are some great options for different types of food. Since it’s the Caribbean, barbecue and fish are found everywhere.

These are some of the best places to eat that we’ve encountered:

  • Lily’s Treasure Chest – great Caribbean and other food
  • Blue Water Grill – Perfect mix of cuisines
  • The Fry Jack House – Belizean Fry Jacks
  • Sandbar Beachfront Restaurant and Bar – Amazing pizza

If you like spicy food, try out the Marie Sharp’s Habanero hot sauce. I love spicy foods and have tried all the different hot sauces in Central and South America. This one is still my very favourite. Bring me back a bottle when you go!

Things to do

There are a whole bunch of great things to do on the island. I’ll name a few:

Visit the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef

From San Pedro, this barrier reef is only a short boat ride away. Visit the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and spot incredible wildlife, such as turtles, nurse sharks, manta rays, and a variety of tropical fish.

trips to san pedro belize

Hire a golf cart

You’ll quickly notice that people use off-road golf carts to get around San Pedro and the rest of the island. It’s great fun to do and it’s a very convenient way of getting around. You can use it to visit the next thing on the list!

Visit Secret Beach

This not-so-secret beach is called secret beach because it’s only been accessible for a short time. There was no road before. Since then, this beach has become one of the most popular spots on the island. Due to its crystal clear waters and shelter from the wind, it’s now a hotspot for both tourists and locals.

Day trip to Caye Caulker

One of my favourite islands we’ve visited on our 10-month Latin America trip. Caye Caulker is the less developed, even more laid-back version of Ambergris Caye. Head over to hurricane-made Split, which has split the island into two pieces, for cocktails, sunshine, and sea.

Compare San Pedro and Caye Caulker in our comparison guide .

Fly over the Blue Hole

Probably the most famous site in Belize: The Blue Hole. It’s got its name from the fact that it’s a, you guessed it, big blue hole.

Right, there is a little more to it than that. This hole is underwater, and because of the immense depth the water seems darker. Creating a massive dark blue hole in the otherwise turquoise waters.

You can also find Indian, Thai, Italian, and Japanese cuisine in San Pedro. With so many options, you can find something to suit your taste in San Pedro, Belize.

How Do People Get Around In San Pedro Belize?

If you’re planning a trip to San Pedro Belize, you may wonder what the best way to get around is. While many transportation options are available, each has its pros and cons. In this blog post, we’ll break down the most popular methods of transport in San Pedro, Belize, so that you can decide which one is right for you.

Walking is the most natural way to get around, and it’s also the cheapest and most convenient option (especially if your destination is close by). That being said, walking can be impractical in certain situations—if you’re traveling with a lot of luggage or if you’re going to be covering a lot of ground, for example. And let’s face it, sometimes it’s just too hot to walk!

Another popular mode of transportation in San Pedro, Belize, is biking. Cycling is a great way to exercise while getting around town and is also environmentally friendly. The downside of biking is that it can be tiring (especially in the heat), and it’s not always the safest option—you’re vulnerable to accidents on the road, and you can’t carry as much stuff with you as you can on foot or by golf cart.

In San Pedro, Belize, golf carts are ubiquitous. You’ll see them driving down the streets, parked in front of stores, and even being used as taxi cabs. Golf carts are a great way to get around—they’re fast enough to make getting from place to place a breeze but slow enough to take in the sights as you go. They’re also relatively affordable to rent (if you don’t want to buy your own). The downside of golf carts is that they’re not especially environmentally friendly and can be dangerous if driven carelessly.

Taking a taxi is your best bet if you need to get somewhere quickly and don’t want to deal with the hassle of renting a golf cart or driving yourself. Taxis are plentiful in San Pedro, Belize, and relatively affordable (although rates will vary depending on how far you’re going). The downside of taking a taxi is that you’ll have to flag one down whenever you need one—which can be difficult if you’re in a remote location or if it’s late at night.

How Many Days Do You Need In San Pedro Belize?

San Pedro is a bustling little town located on the island of Ambergris Caye in Belize. Although it is only about 5 miles long and 1 mile wide, San Pedro has a lot to offer visitors. From snorkeling and diving in the world-famous Blue Hole to explore the many shops and restaurants, there is something for everyone in San Pedro.

10 days is the perfect time to explore all San Pedro offers. However, if you also want to explore the town and try different activities, you may need a week or more. Ultimately, the decision is up to you. But one thing is for sure – San Pedro Belize is a place you will never forget.

How To Invest In Belize Property?

How to invest in San Pedro Belize

San Pedro Island in Belize is known for being a beautiful travel destination. Its turquoise waters, white sand beaches, and incredible coral reefs make it a popular spot for scuba diving, snorkeling, and general beach-going. But San Pedro is also an excellent place to buy property. If you’re looking for an investment or a vacation home, here are the three best places to buy on the island.

Turnkey Developments

If you’re looking for a hassle-free way to buy property in San Pedro, then turnkey developments are the way to go. With turnkey developments, the developer takes care of everything from the initial purchase to the construction of the property. One of our most popular properties to do this at is Margaritaville Belize.

All you need to do is pick out your unit and wait for it to be completed – Margartiville is opening in March 2023 and units are already 90% completed. And because this development is located in a prime location on the island (on the beachfront), it makes for an excellent investment that will only appreciate over time.

Another excellent option for people looking to buy property in San Pedro is condos. Unlike turnkey developments, condos are already built and available for purchase immediately. This means you don’t have to wait for construction to be completed before you can start using your new vacation home. And because condos are often sold fully furnished, they make an ideal choice for people who want to rent out their property when they’re not using it themselves.

For those who want complete control over their property purchase, buying land is the way. With land, you can build your own home or business from scratch exactly how you want it – there’s no need to compromise on location or design. And because the land is such a limited resource in San Pedro, it makes for an excellent investment that will likely appreciate over time.

San Pedro Island in Belize is an excellent place to buy property, whether you’re looking for an investment or a vacation home. There are many different types of properties available on the island, so there’s sure to be something that meets your needs and budget. If you’re considering buying property on San Pedro Island, check out turnkey developments, condos, and land – these are some of the best places to buy on the island!

Summing Up!

Also, if you are looking for a place to stay or the best restaurants in the area, we’ve got you covered there. So, what are you waiting for? Book Your Ferry to San Pedro

Situated on the southern coast of ambergris caye, san pedro is essentially a postcard brought to life — and absolutely worth a visit if you’re fantasizing about a true get-away-from-it-all vacation., dreaming of san pedro.

If you’re at all familiar with Belize, then you may have heard San Pedro mentioned more than a few times. But even if you’ve never ventured into this part of the world, you’ve likely dreamed of a place just like it: warm, breezy, inviting, friendly, and undoubtedly one of the planet’s closest imitations of paradise.

It wasn’t until the middle of the 19th century that San Pedro was officially settled by the many fishermen and their families who migrated to the region during the Caste War of Yucatán. In those early days, there were just a handful of people in the area. The settlement grew dramatically over the years, but it wasn’t until 1984 that it earned status as an official township.

The waters are pristine, the breezes mild , and the sands pure white. It’s a study in pure simplicity and solitude , and it offers the ultimate escape.

If you plan to visit Ambergris Caye at all, then there’s no question you’ll find yourself booking a ferry to San Pedro at some point during your stay. This is the area where much of the action happens, and it’s as much of a representation of modern tourist life as it is an old-world fishing and boating town. Sandy streets feel decidedly ancient, especially those lined with wooden homes. The main streets, however, burst with the feeling of modernized society, thanks to the eclectic mix of souvenir shops, restaurants, clubs, and cafes. As you venture forth, you’ll find yourself in residential confines that offer a glimpse of San Pedro at its simplest. For all its versatility, it’s a city ensconced in beach culture — and you’ll pick up on that tropical vibe as soon as you arrive and start mingling with the locals, whose carefree spirit is enough to pull you away from your own worries.

Things to Do

If you’re an ocean enthusiast, you may need to venture outside of San Pedro to find exactly what you need. It’s well worth a golf cart ride to Secret Beach, which isn’t much of a secret at all to anyone who has ever been to Belize. The waters are pristine, the breezes mild, and the sands pure white. It’s a study in pure simplicity and solitude, and it offers the ultimate escape. There are plenty of catamaran cruises available for those who want to soak in the views from a different vantage point. You can also use this opportunity to check out the incredible barrier reef while diving or snorkeling.

Topping most travelers’ must-see lists is the Blue Hole, an enormous sinkhole situated in the Caribbean Sea. Just off the Ambergris Caye coast, the hole generally looks most impressive from above. For that view, you’ll need to book a helicopter tour. But you can also book a dive boat and go snorkeling or diving if you want to take a more adventurous look at the Blue Hole.

But if you favor a more social scene, you’ll find plenty of that in town. There are bars all over the place — snag a cocktail at a beachfront location or watch some sports at a nearby pub. Restaurants cater to nearly every culinary whim, whether you love sushi, sandwiches, or a simple coffee and pastry for breakfast.

Where to Stay

Budget, mid-range, and premium hotels are all situated throughout San Pedro and points beyond. Some are downright luxurious, with private beaches, balconies offering epic views, lap pools, kitchens, verandas, and so much more. But you can just as easily save your spending for your itinerary and opt for low-key accommodations that won’t break the bank. There are even some hostels situated on the water, which is a great way for wallet-watching backpackers to enjoy the city at its most beautiful.

What to Bring

You’ll do plenty of walking while you’re in San Pedro, unless you plan to ride a golf cart exclusively. Comfortable sandals are your best friend while here, but you might also opt to walk barefoot as many of the locals do. Remember to show up with a broad hat to shield your eyes from those penetrating ultraviolet rays, a bottle or two of sunscreen, and plenty of water so you can stay hydrated while on the move.

Where to Stay in Belize for an Unforgettable Exotic Escape

F rom the beaches on Ambergris Caye to the Mayan ruins in San Ignacio, Belize is packed with adventurous and dreamy travel destinations. Located on the Caribbean coast of Central America, this small country borders Guatemala and Mexico . Belize is known for its lush jungles, peaceful islands and vibrant coral reefs. Particularly impressive is the Belize Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef in the world, and the Great Blue Hole, a giant underwater sinkhole.

Drink a piña colada on the beach or go hiking in the mountains. Tour Mayan ruins or see lots of underwater wildlife on a snorkeling expedition. Belize appeals to all kinds of travels, from beach bums to outdoor adventure-seekers. Accommodation options range from budget-friendly beach cabanas to romantic bungalows to dreamy island resorts. Plan your Belize getaway now with our list of the best places to stay in Belize.

1. San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

If a Caribbean vacation is your goal, San Pedro is a great place to start. Located on Ambergris Caye, the largest island in Belize, San Pedro is a quick 15-minute flight from Belize City. Or you can go the slower route and travel by ferry, which takes about 90 minutes.

The island is close to the Belize Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world, making it a great spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. If you want to explore this underwater UNESCO World Heritage Site, be sure to visit the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, a protected zone that is home to more than 160 different fish species. You can get there by boat in about 10 minutes.

Not all of the resorts on Ambergris Caye have swimmable beaches, making pools their main attraction. For an off-resort experience where you can enjoy drinks in the water, many make the trek to Secret Beach. It’s slow-going to get there by golf cart, so you may want to take a minivan taxi. This will cost you about $100 round-trip, but your driver will wait and return you to your resort.

Many of Belize’s most popular resorts are just a short golf cart drive from San Pedro. If you’re looking to book a stay on points, SheBuysTravel writer Heidi Gollub recommends Alaia Belize, Autograph Collection — this Marriott property opened in 2021 and has the most incredible oceanview suites. Use Alaia’s Adventure Concierge to book fishing, snorkeling, and scuba diving excursions that leave from the resort’s Five Star PADI Dive Center.

Gollub also recommends getting an oceanside aromatherapy massage from Victoria House Resort & Spa , no matter where you’re staying on Ambergris Caye. If you stick around for dinner at the resort’s Palmilla Restaurant, ask for the chef’s special.

2. Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker is the perfect spot for a slower, more relaxing beach vacation. This island is particularly popular among backpackers, who are attracted to its affordable prices and laid-back atmosphere. Caye Calker is also easy to get to, as it is only a 45-minute water taxi ride from Belize City.

Visitors can sample fresh seafood, meet the locals or try out a variety of water activities, including snorkeling, diving, scuba diving and kayaking. There is a seahorse reserve, a mangrove forest and lots of boat trips that depart from the island. The Hol Chan Marine Reserve is also accessible from Caye Caulker.

You won’t find expensive luxury resorts on this island. Accommodations options include boutique hotels and cozy cabanas, all reasonably priced. If you’re traveling with family, Caye Reef Condos  is a great option. These beachfront apartments can sleep up to six people and are equipped with kitchens. Backpackers can opt for one of the island’s popular hostels, such as Blue Fin Cabanas  and Sophies Guest Rooms .

3. Placencia

Placencia sits on the southern tip of a peninsula in southeastern Belize. This charming fishing village is known for its beautiful sand beaches, which stretch for miles. Adventure-seekers can use Placencia as a home-base while heading off on exciting day trips, while those looking to relax can sunbathe on the beaches or explore the lively downtown area. When you’re not relaxing or exploring the jungle, hike to the nearby Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and see jaguars.

The town is home to many luxury beach resorts, many of which have their own dive centers. One popular luxury option is Turtle Inn , a charming beachfront restaurant seated between the Placencia lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. The Turtle Inn boasts an on-site spa, three restaurants, two bars and a pool area.

There are also more affordable hotels for those on a tighter budget. On such option, Miramar Suites , is a popular beachfront hotel located in downtown Placencia. This is a great option for families, as there as an outdoor pool area and many rooms come equipped with kitchens or kitchenettes.

4. San Ignacio

Ready to dive into Mayan history? Travel to San Ignacio. This town is located in the Cayo District, only 20 minutes from the Guatemalan border. Travelers here have easy access to ancient Maya ruins, like Xunantunich and Caracol. The town is surrounded by nature reserves, national parks, waterfalls and caves.

Downtown San Ignacio is full of colorful murals, local markets and locally-owned restaurants. Travelers can stay in jungle lodges or charming boutique hotels. Learn about Iguanas at the Green Iguana Conservation Project or take a Mayan chocolate making tour. To get your adrenaline pumping, take an ATV tour cave tour.

Hotel options in San Ignacio include the  Chaa Creek , a luxury resort dedicated to eco-tourism. Guests can opt to stay in suites, cottages, villas or guest rooms. Some of the upscale villas come with jacuzzis, private verandas and private infinity pools. Maya Mountain Lodge  is a more affordable option just a short walk from the city center.

Hopkins is a small village on the coast of the Stann Creek. The village is home to a community of Garifuna people, a mix of African and Indigenous Americans who live in small towns along the Caribbean. Enjoy delicious Garifuna cuisine, such as bundiga or cassava bread. The Garifuna people are also known for the lively music, which can be heard at local restaurants and bars. For an even more immersive experience, take a drumming or dancing lesson.

Travelers can also visit an overwater bar, go scuba diving, explore a wildlife sanctuary or rent a bike and explore the village. Accommodation options range from modest guest houses to oceanfront luxury hotels. Particularly popular resorts include Belizean Dreams Resort  and Hamanasi Adventure & Dive Resort .

6. Belize City

Belize City is the largest city in the country, and likely the start of your Belize adventure, as it houses the country’s only international airport. Most travelers fly into Belize City and spend a couple days here before heading off to one of the islands or other vacation destinations.

Although Belize City isn’t known for its beaches, it is home to colonial architecture, historic landmarks and museums. Learn a little history at the Museum of Belize or check out the architecture in St. John’s Cathedral. There’s also a popular zoo and lots of guided nature tours that depart from the city. Some popular accommodation options in Belize City include Villa Boscardi  and Harbour View Boutique Hotel & Yoga Retreat .

7. Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is the perfect base for nature-lovers. Here, you’ll find waterfalls, caves, natural waterslides, pools and pine forests. Travelers can spend the day hiking, biking or horseback riding through the forests while enjoying breathtaking scenery and spotting a variety of wildlife.

For affordable accommodation options, stay in a rustic cottage, such as Kane Villas vacation rentals . These rental apartments include a kitchen and a private balcony with views of the mountains. If you’re looking to splurge, consider a luxurious forest lodge, such as the Blancaneaux Lodge , operated by the Family Coppola Hideaways. This resort features an outdoor swimming pool, an organic garden and two on-site restaurants.
