Planning a Campus Tour at UCLA

ucla self tour

Thank you for your interest in visiting UCLA! We are excited to welcome you and your guests to campus to learn more about the Bruin experience first hand. If you would like to visit , be sure to reserve your spot on a campus tour! We encourage you to plan your visit early since our tours quickly fill up with visitors from across California, the United States, and the world. The tours reservation system will open dates four months in advance.

Please ensure you are arriving at the tour date and time for which you have reserved. Note: We will not be able to accommodate groups who arrive for a different date and/or time than the one specified in their reservation. We do not offer a waitlist for campus tours nor will we be able to accommodate guests without a reservation. Guests without a reservation may still receive the UCLA self-guided tour map and other suggestions for learning more about our campus from a staff member at check-in and speak with them regarding any questions about the campus as well.

What kind of tour do I sign up for?

There are a few different options to choose from as you explore our Campus Tours website:

  • “Individual Tours” for parties  of 1-6 people which must be reserved online through our website. We encourage you to visit if you are a prospective freshman (from high school) or transfer (from another college/university) applicant. If you would like to make a reservation for 7 or more guests in your party, please contact our Tour Coordinators at (310) 825-8764 Tours are generally offered on all weekdays and Saturdays. Special accommodations (American Sign Language interpreter, wheelchair, no steps tour route) can be provided and you can request these with your reservation. These requests need to be made 2 weeks in advance.
  • “Group Tours” for high schools, community colleges, and community based groups where we can accommodate groups of 10-100 .
  •   “Cub Tours” for groups of students in Kindergarten through 8th grade.

What do I do if the tours are full?

We cannot accommodate guests who do not have a reservation. If a tour is full, we encourage you to continue to check the reservation site as registered guests may cancel and this will open up spots allowing you to make a reservation. If the tour is full and you would still like to visit campus, there is a self-guided tour map available.  This will allow you to go at your own pace, to explore parts of campus you’re most interested in, and to visit the Hill, our residential community, which is not included on the official tour. We also encourage you to visit Undergraduate Admission located at 1147 Murphy Hall where you can speak with an admission advisor and pick up copies of all of our publications. Undergraduate Admission is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm.

I can’t travel to Los Angeles. How do I still explore UCLA?

If you are unable to visit us in person, we encourage you to explore our virtual tour . We will also frequently utilize our social media accounts to provide information on our campus and the application process throughout the year! Be sure to sign up for Get Connected , so you can be aware of any Facebook live events, webinars, or any additional events near where you may live! Please note, that demonstrated interest is not a factor within our review process. This means that if you are able to visit and meet with us or not, your application will not be impacted in any way. We encourage you to utilize our publication library and the resources linked above to best suit your schedule, interests, and questions!

What else can I explore on campus?

There are many additional ways to explore our campus community! To see our residential communities, sign up for the on-campus housing tour . For students interested in one of our specialty schools (Arts and Architecture, Music, Theater, Film and Television, Nursing, or Engineering), book one of our specialty school tours and information sessions .   During the academic year, you can also experience our academic community first-hand  by sitting in on a class from the approved list of courses for our lecture series .

I’m registered for a tour: what do I do the day of my reservation?

Upon arriving to campus, please proceed to the parking kiosk located at Westwood Plaza and Strathmore Place. A parking attendant will direct you to the nearest available parking structure. Please note, parking for the day is $13.

For registered guests, you will begin your tour in the Bruin Viewpoint Lounge in Ackerman Student Union . This building is located in Bruin Plaza with some close landmarks including the Luskin Conference Center and the Bruin Bear (great for photos if you arrive early!). You will go to the A Level of Ackerman (above the UCLA Store) and a sign will direct you to where you may check-in. We are located across from the Bruin Pharmacy and next to the Photo Center.

Your campus visit will last approximately two hours, including a 30-minute admission presentation and 90-minute walking tour, guided by a current undergraduate student. The tour includes hills and stairs so comfortable shoes are highly encouraged. Please allow ample time for Los Angeles traffic and parking to arrive at the time specified with your tour confirmation. For more assistance, including visuals on where to park and check-in for your tour, view our Campus Tour highlight on our Instagram !

We hope you are excited to visit our campus! We look forward to welcoming you to campus and answering your questions regarding academic programs, resources, student life, and admissions!

A Charming UCLA Self Guided Tour

UCLA

I love visiting the UCLA campus especially in the fall when classes are in full swing. Since I graduated from UCLA myself a long time ago, I love to take my family around the campus and tell them about each building. Over the years, the UCLA campus has become part of the history of Los Angeles. Anyone can enjoy visiting the campus for a day, so come along with me as we take a UCLA self guided tour.

I went to school at UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles), and every time I get a chance I take my family for a visit. So, put on some comfortable shoes, and come along with me as we take a UCLA self guided tour.

In this article:

My Favorite Things to Do at UCLA

  • Walk up Janss Steps all the way to Dickson Terrace.
  • Take pictures with the original UCLA building (Royce Hall, Powell Library, Haines Hall and the Humanities Building).
  • Visit Powell Library. This is a public university and you have access to see the interior.
  • Take a stroll through the Murphy sculpture garden on the North end of the campus.
  • The Inverted Fountain is an interesting concept but not very exciting.
  • Go down (or up) on Bruin Walk on a regular school day. You’ll quickly get a sense of how busy UCLA campus is.
  • Visit the Ackerman Student Union store. Besides lots of UCLA gear you can buy, the bookstore is well stocked with hard to find technical books.
  • Attend one of the UCLA classes…really, they’re great and you can do it! Just talk to the professor before the class and usually it’s not a problem.

1. Bruin Walk

Royce Hall and Janss Steps seen from Bruin Walk

Bruin Walk is my favorite way to start our UCLA self guided tour. This is the very short potion of Bruin Walk up the hills from Ackerman Union to Powell Library. I love this shaded stretch of stairs especially in the spring when all the trees and flowers are in full bloom.

This is the heart of UCLA during a normal school day, with all the clubs and organizations active on campus.

2. Powell Library

Powell library is a main attraction on any UCLA self guided tour

Let’s focus our UCLA self guided tour at my favorite place: Powell Library . Powell Library is one of the four original UCLA buildings. The Powell Library building has been renovated recently and it boasts great Romanesque Revival architecture on the outside as well as on the inside.

The Powell Library interior shows arches and other Romanesque architecture features.

Powell Library is the main undergraduate library on the UCLA campus. Even though it provides lots of study space, it is often overcrowded because it’s the favorite study area for most UCLA students. The “old feeling” of the interior architecture is very relaxing and provides a unique feeling for students. During my UCLA days I loved studying in Powell as well and it was my favorite place to study as well.

3. Janss Steps

Janss Steps overlook the lower Wilson Plaza

Continuing our UCLA self guided tour, we step out of Powell Library to Dickson Court which is the main historical court at UCLA. This is the best place for taking pictures with the oldest four buildings on the UCLA campus. This is where UCLA started. At the edge of the hill you have a great view of Janss Steps and Shapiro Fountain as well as the four original UCLA buildings.

4. Royce Hall

Royce Hall is one of the four original buildings on the UCLA campus.

Completed in 1929, Royce Hall and its twin-towered front remain the best known UCLA landmark. Named after Josiah Royce, a California-born philosopher, the building’s exterior is composed of elements borrowed from many Italian sources especially from the famous Abbey Church of Sant’Ambrogio in Milan, Italy. Taking a picture with the beautiful Royce Hall, will definitely prove you have visited the UCLA campus.

5. Sculpture Garden

On the Northern side of the campus, near the Theater building you can stroll trough a small open air sculpture garden . It is a relaxing place, perfect for taking a break and admiring the sculptures on display. This 5-acre garden on the UCLA campus features 70+ sculptures, plus lawns & sitting areas.

6. Inverted Fountain

Continuing our UCLA self guided tour on the east side of the UCLA campus we come to the Inverted Fountain . A popular meeting and hang out place, the Inverted Fountain is what the name implies: a water fountain flowing down instead of  being pushed upward.

7. Botanical Garden

Bromeliads at UCLA Botanical Garden

We continue our UCLA self guided tour by moving towards the Mathematics Building and then turning south right in between the Mathematics Building and Franz Hall. Taking a leisurely stroll and maybe picking up a cup of coffee, we arrive at the small but tranquil UCLA Botanical Garden . This is one of my favorite places to find a quiet place while strolling around and admiring all the plants and different habitats.

Plan Your UCLA Self Guided Tour

Getting to UCLA . Well, UCLA is well known in Southern California and any of the online maps would be able to give you accurate driving directions. Personally, I like to exit the 405 freeway at Sunset Boulevard and go over the 405 freeway.

Where to park at UCLA? Finding parking at UCLA is always a challenge, but you should be able to find visitor’s parking in parking structure 8 , which is very close to the heart of the campus. Allocate at least 4 hours for your parking permit in order to have a good visit of the UCLA campus.

For more details checkout the UCLA Campus Map.

Gardens of UCLA

The tranquil seven-acre Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden is located on the southeast corner of campus. The “living museum” is home to more than 5,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants from around the world. The garden features collections of Malaysian rhododendrons, the lily alliance, bromeliads, cycads, ferns and native Hawaiian plants. You may take a docent guided tour or enjoy the environs on your own.

UCLA is also the site of one of the most lauded outdoor sculpture collections in the country, the tranquil Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden . Featuring 70 sculptures and spanning more than five acres on the northeast corner of campus. The collection highlights the role of the arts at UCLA.

Alan Jackson says he’s ‘hanging it up full time’ — right after one last country-music tour

Country music‘s Alan Jackson is hanging up his cowboy hat, announcing his final tour dates while his health is “getting worse.”

“I’ve been touring for over 30 years, you know, played everywhere in the country and parts of the world and had a wonderful career,” he said in a video posted on X, announcing the final dates of his Last Call: One More for the Road farewell tour.

The “Chattahoochee” singer, 65, cited a desire to spend more time with family — in particular, his three daughters and his grandchildren — as he enters his “twilight years.”

“I enjoy spending more time at home and don’t want to be away like I had to be in my younger days,” he said. “I think it’s just getting time to start thinking about hanging it up full time.”

Jackson revealed in a new interview that he has a degenerative nerve condition that has affected his balance. Alan Jackson postpones upcoming weekend concerts to deal with ‘health issues’

‘I hoped I’d be able to be there; I hate to disappoint my fans,’ Jackson said of postponing a couple of upcoming weekend shows.

Oct. 5, 2022

Another factor in Jackson’s decision was his diagnosis with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a genetic neurological condition that affects muscle control in the feet and hands. The condition is not fatal but can severely restrict mobility, according to the Cleveland Clinic . The singer has had to postpone shows in order to deal with related health issues , notably halting a multi-show outing in 2022 to deal with “health issues” stemming from the disease.

“Most of my fans know I have a degenerative health condition that affects my legs and arms and my mobility,” the two-time Grammy winner explained in this week’s video. “And it’s getting worse.”

“It makes me more uncomfortable on stage and I just have a hard time. I just want to think about maybe calling it quits before I’m unable to do the job like I want to,” he concluded.

Alan Jackson performs Friday night at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

Review: Alan Jackson remembers the good times at Nokia Theatre

Implicit in the name of Alan Jackson’s current road show, the Keepin’ It Country tour, is the idea that this veteran country star is engaged in some resistance.

Feb. 28, 2015

The Country Music Hall of Fame member revealed his diagnosis in a 2021 interview on “ Today ,” explaining that he decided to make the information public because it was beginning to visibly affect his performances.

“I just wanted the fans and the public to know if they’ve come to see me in the last few years or if they come to see me in the future if I play anymore, what’s going on,” he told co-host Jenna Bush Hager.

“In some ways, [disclosing the condition is] a relief because I was starting to get so self-conscious up there, about stumbling around,” he said. “And it just made me nervous up there trying to keep my balance. And I look pitiful. So I think it’ll be good for me now to get it out in the open, and so if anybody’s curious why I don’t walk right, that’s why.”

At the time, the entertainer said he had no plans to stop touring but that his health condition might affect his availability.

Jackson’s final shows will be played from August to May in Boston; Grand Rapids, Mich.; Fayetteville, Ark.; Kansas City, Mo.; Salt Lake City; Oklahoma City; Fort Worth, Texas; Orlando and Tampa, Fla., and Milwaukee. Tickets went on sale Friday.

Housing | Real estate news: Huntington Beach apartment fourplexes fetch $678,125 per unit

This was the first time that either property had been listed for sale, CBRE said.

ucla self tour

CBRE represented both the unidentified buyer and the seller in two deals, which include a fourplex at 321 22nd St. and the neighboring fourplex at 317 22nd St.

Brokers said the seller was based Huntington Beach and the buyer Westminster. Neither was in a 1031 exchange, a popular investment strategy we’ve written about of late.

“We … generated eight competitive offers, selecting an all-cash buyer who wanted to purchase both assets,” said Dan Blackwell at CBRE. “The two neighboring multifamily assets are identical properties, each sitting on a double lot. As a result, the investor acquired a total of four contiguous lots, offering potential alternative asset plans.”

Each of the two-story buildings, completed in 1972, span 4,101 square feet on 5,750-square-foot lots. Both include a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom floor plans.

Last week, we reported on a slew of small apartment building sales , several of which were 1031 exchange transactions. Three deals included buildings very close to the coastline.

Several bungalows in downtown Laguna Beach snared $841,429 per unit, or $5.89 million. Two more beach-adjacent deals took place in San Clemente where 12 units in two separate buildings sold for a combined $5.5 million.

Another six-unit apartment property in Costa Mesa sold for $3,100,000, in a deal represented by Marcus & Millichap. And to the north in Anaheim, a 16-unit building sold for $5.7 million.

Irvine’s Bendetti buys industrial complex in Texas

Irvine-based Bendetti recently bought a 257,192-square-foot industrial complex in Dallas.

Terms were not disclosed.

The firm, which bought Proto Park in a joint venture with ReCap Real Estate Investments, said the property was fully leased at the time of the purchase. Tenants include Morrison Supply, Taxila Stone, Preziosa Stone, Dynasty Distilling and an unnamed aviation group.

“This is an irreplaceable property in an extremely infill Dallas location and reflects the market fundamentals that we seek when considering an investment property. Looking ahead, Bendetti will continue its pursuit of light industrial opportunities in target markets that include Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Utah, California, among others,” said Jon Moyer, Bendetti’s director of acquisitions, in a statement.
