WHAT IS SCHOOL OF ROCK THE MUSICAL ABOUT?

The School Of Rock UK Tour , the hit Broadway and West End musical from Andrew Lloyd Webber, will come to a theatre near you from June 2021!

Based on the iconic, hit movie, this irresistible new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn an extra bit of cash by posing as a supply teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A pupils into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. But can he get them to the Battle of the Bands without their parents and the school’s headmistress finding out?

The production opened at the New London Theatre (now the Gillian Lynne Theatre) in November 2016 to 5-star reviews and widespread critical acclaim. It went on to win the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music. The Broadway production recently concluded its run at the Winter Garden Theatre with a US national touring production continuing. An Australian production opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne last October.

School of Rock – The Musical features new music written by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Glenn Slater (The Little Mermaid, Sister Act) and a book by Julian Fellowes. It is directed by Laurence Connor (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, London Palladium 2019) with choreography by JoAnn M.Hunter, set and costume designs by Anna Louizos, lighting design by Natasha Katz, sound design by Mick-Potter, music supervision by John Rigby with Matt Smith as musical director.

Get ready to stick it to the man!

Andrew Lloyd Webber's smash hit musical adaptation of School of Rock is entertaining audiences all around their country as they embark on their UK & Ireland tour.

Following a brilliant run at London's Gillian Lynne Theatre, the musical began their tour in September 2021 with performances currently scheduled through until August 2022.

What is School of Rock about?

School of Rock is based on the hit 2003 movie of the same name that starred Jack Black, Joan Cusack, Sarah Silverman, and Miranda Cosgrove. The musical tells the story of Dewey Finn, a wannabe rock star who's strapped for cash, so he ends up posing as a substitute teacher at a fancy prep school.

With absolutely no teaching qualifications whatsoever, Dewey ends up turning this class of straight-A students into an incredible band of young rock stars.

Who's in the cast?

The touring cast of School of Rock includes Jake Sharp as Dewey, Rebecca Lock as Rosalie, Matthew Rowland as Ned, Nadia Violet Johnson as Patty and Alex Tomkins as Dewey at certain performances.

Who wrote the musical version of School of Rock?

The musical includes music and lyrics by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Glenn Slater. Glenn has also written lyrics for the stage adaptation of the Little Mermaid, Love Never Dies, as well as Disney's animated film, Tangled.

The book for the musical was written by Downton Abbey creator, Julian Fellows .

Where can I see School of Rock - The Musical?

You can expect to see School of Rock at the following locations: Aberdeen, Glasgow, Norwich, Wimbledon, Newcastle, Leeds, Eastbourne, Canterbury, Plymouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Dartford, Leicester, Northampton, Crawley, Dublin, Liverpool, Southampton, Sheffield, and Bournemouth.

WATCH: Trailer for School of Rock - The Musical:

Our favourite musicals based on films:, billy elliot.

Billy Elliot arrived in cinemas in 2000 telling the story of a boy from County Durham who took up ballet lessons. The film is set around the backdrop of the miners' strike of 1984-85. In 2005 the musical version opened at the Victoria Palace with music by Elton John and book and lyrics by Lee Hall (who also went on to pen the screenplay to Elton's biopic, Rocketman ). The musical was a huge success and ran in the West End for just over a decade closing in 2016 ahead of a refurbishment of the theatre which would then welcome Hamilton as its next resident. The musical was broadcast live across cinemas in 2014 and during this period had our very own Ruthie Henshall as Billy's teacher Mrs. Wilkinson.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

While Chitty Chitty Bang Bang may feel like it was always designed for the stage, we had to wait a while for technology to catch up before we saw our fine four fendered friend up on the stage. The 1968 film was based on the book by Bond writer Ian Fleming which starred Dick Van Dyke as Caractacus Potts. However, the story wasn't put on the stage until 2002 where it opened at the London Palladium starring Michael Ball as Caractacus, Emma Williams as Truly Scrumptious and Carrie Hope Fletcher as Jemima. The musical version included the songs from the original including 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang', 'Hushabye Mountain' and 'Me Ol' Bamboo'. The film's original composers, the Sherman Brothers (also known for Mary Poppins ) composed six new songs for the stage adaptation.

Grey Gardens

Grey Gardens is one of the few musicals that is based on a documentary. The 1975 film showed the lives of Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale (Big Edie) and her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale (Little Edie), they were related to First Lady Jackie Kennedy but found themselves in an isolated life in a decaying mansion overrun with cats in their later life. The first act is a fictional imagining of what the mother and daughter's lives may have been like in the 1940s as rich aristocrats living lives of luxury. The second act jumps to 1975 with the actress who played Big Edie in Act I switching over to play Little Edie in Act II. This part of the musical is based on the content of the documentary pulling lines directly from the source material.

Hairspray has been a huge hit since it first opened on Broadway in 2002 packed with comedy and feel-good songs. The show is based on the 1988 film of the same name which was written, directed and produced by John Waters, and starred Ricki Lake as Tracy Turnblad and the legendary drag queen Divine as Tracy's mother, Edna. The musical has plenty of feel-good songs including 'Good Morning Baltimore' and 'You Can't Stop the Beat' and of course the powerful 'I Know Where I've Been'. The musical adaptation was successful enough that it was then itself adapted into a movie musical in 2007!

Before the Mean Girls came along, the Heathers were terrorising the hallways. The 1989 film has a cult following and is considered one of the greatest coming of age films of all time so it's no surprise that Heathers eventually got the musical theatre treatment. The musical quickly became a fan favourite with plenty of us listening to the Broadway cast recording on repeat when it was released and jumping for joy when the Heathers arrived in the West End. The show proved to be popular here having run on the West End twice already as well as getting a UK tour.

Kinky Boots

Set in a shoe factory in Northampton, Kinky Boots is a story about celebrating difference and accepting each other. The show's book was written by Harvey Fierstein with songs by Cyndi Lauper after opening on Broadway in 2012 it wasn't long until the musical hit the West End with the show opening at the Adelphi theatre in 2015.

Legally Blonde

How do you improve on the iconic film that is Legally Blonde? Why, add some amazing songs to it that's how! Legally Blonde has been a hit among theatre fans since it opened in 2007 with its campy up-beat songs such as 'Omigod You Guys', 'Positive', 'So Much Better' and 'Legally Blonde'. The show made it to the West End in 2009 with Sheridan Smith in the lead as Elle Woods. It's since toured the UK twice with Faye Brookes and Lucie Jones in the leading role respectively.

Pretty Woman

The iconic 1990 Julia Roberts film is one of the more recent films to get the musical theatre treatment. Pretty Woman: The Musical premiered in Chicago in 2018 and transferred to Broadway a few months later where it ran for a year. The show opened on the West End in early 2020 but closed after a month because of the COVID-19 pandemic - however as theatres returned, they opened back up in their new home at the Savoy Theatre.

Little Shop of Horrors

This was another cult classic that went from film to stage, to film again. The first version of Little Shop of Horrors was a black and white B movie which was released in 1960. The musical adaptation came out in 1982 with music and lyrics by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman – the pair who went on to pen music for some Disney greats including The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast . The show's score includes the songs 'Skid Row (Downtown)', 'Somewhere That's Green' and 'Suddenly Seymour'. The musical was quickly adapted into a movie musical in 1986 and there are plans for another film with Billy Porter in the role of Audrey II.

Singin' in the Rain

With how well this story adapts to the stage we wouldn't be surprised if people thought the stage version of Singin' in the Rain came first. However, the beloved 1952 Gene Kelly film didn't make it to the stage until 1983 when it opened at the London Palladium with Tommy Steele as Don Lockwood. The stage version has come with plenty of amendments throughout its various revivals but still includes the songs we all love including 'Fit as a Fiddle', 'Good Mornin'', 'Would You' and of course, 'Singin' in the Rain'.

Sugar, butter, flour. Waitress the musical has captured our hearts as we learn about what baking can do. The story is based on the 2007 film written by Adrienne Shelly who also directed and starred in the film. Sadly, Adrienne didn't live to see the film's release where it received positive reviews. The stage adaptation has a book by Jessie Nelson and music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles. Sara has also starred in the leading role both on Broadway and the West End. The show has gone on to become a fan favourite with it making a return to Broadway and heading on a UK & Ireland tour.

Award-winning West End musical School of Rock is heading out on a UK tour in 2021/22, and will be stopping off at Palace Theatre Manchester on its travels.

This is the first time the smash-hit production is set to tour the country, after it originally opened on Broadway in December 2015 and quickly transferred to the West End in November 2016, being met with widespread critical acclaim.

It went on to win the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music.

There, he turns a class of straight-A students into a “guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing” rock band.

Bat Out of Hell – The Musical, which is packed full of Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf’s biggest hits, is heading back to Manchester early next year.

The huge production toured the UK, Ireland and beyond between 2021 and 2023, scooping up several awards as it went.

And now it’s returning to the Palace Theatre for an extra go at a UK-wide tour.

The reimagined show features an eight-piece rock band on stage with multi-level stage scenes.

Bat Out of Hell audiences are transported through several worlds, from Raven’s bedroom to the depths of the Lost’s underground domains.

The Meat Loaf album which shares a name with the musical is one of the biggest-selling albums in history after its release in 1977, spawning two more Bat Out of Hell albums several years later.

For the stage musical, the legendary and award-winning Jim Steinman incorporates iconic songs from the albums, including You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth, Bat Out of Hell, I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That) and Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad, as well as the previously unreleased song What Part of My Body Hurts the Most.

When Bat Out Of Hell returns to Manchester in 2025, it will again follow the Lost boys and girls who flee into tunnels below the city from its ruler Falco.

Down here, Falco’s daughter Raven falls into a love-at-first-sight romance with Strat, the fearless leader of the Lost, which threatens to destroy both their families.

The book, music and lyrics are by Jim Steinman, direction is by Jay Scheib, with musical supervision and additional arrangements by Michael Reed, additional choreography by Xena Gusthart, set and costume design by Jon Bausor, original costume designs by Meentje Nielsen, original wig designs by Linda McKnight, video design by Finn Ross, lighting design by Patrick Woodroffe, sound design by Gareth Owen, orchestration by Steve Sidwell, original casting by David Grindrod CDG and casting by Anne Vosser.

The West End & UK Tour of Bat Out of Hell – The Musical is produced by Michael Cohl, Tony Smith & David Sonenberg with executive producer Julian Stoneman.

Sir Ian McKellen has thanked the NHS in a statement speaking out for the first time after suffering an on-stage fall.

The revered Burnley-born actor is currently starring as John Falstaff in a production of Player Kings at the Noel Coward Theatre in London’s prestigious West End, but during Monday (17 June) night’s show, the 85-year-old was said to have he lost his footing on stage while performing a fight scene and reportedly fell into the orchestra pit .

Audience members who took to social media shortly after the incident said they heard the McKellen “cry out in pain” after falling, before the theatre was swiftly evacuated.

Sir Ian was taken to hospital for medical treatment following the dramatic fall, and the theatre subsequently issued a statement saying it had made the decision to cancel the shows on Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Fans were reassured, however, that the actor was “in good spirits” and expected to “make a full recovery”.

Now, for the first time since suffering the fall, the Tony, Olivier, and Golden Globe award-winning actor has issued a statement thanking the public for all their “kind messages and support”, as well as thanking the country’s health service for the treatment he received.

McKellen said he is “hugely indebted” to the NHS in his update message.

Taking to X to speak to fans directly yesterday evening (18 June), Sir Ian wrote: “I want to thank everyone for their kind messages and support.

“Since the accident, during a performance of Player Kings last night, my injuries have been diagnosed and treated by a series of experts, specialists and nurses working for the National Health Service. To them, of course, I am hugely indebted.”

As well as thanking fans for their support and the NHS for the treatment he received, Sir Ian also gave an update on his anticipated recovery journey, and made sure to say how much he is eager to get back on stage as soon as possible.

“[The NHS] have assured me that my recovery will be complete and speedy,” McKellen’s statement continued, “and I am looking forward to returning to work.”

The Noel Coward Theatre has confirmed in an updated statement on X that it intends to go ahead with tomorrow night’s show (Thursday 19 June).

Young Ava Masters Talks Playing Live & Her Tour Experience In School Of Rock’s UK Tour

It’s time for part 3 of our School of Rock UK Tour cast interviews – and last but certainly not least is one of the incredibly talented members of the younger cast. Discussing everything from what instruments she plays live in the show to how she felt getting the part and more, here’s our chat with Ava Masters aka Katie in the show!

Tell us about yourself! Where do you come from, and which character do you play?

My name is Ava, I’m 12 years old and I live in Kent.  I’m just about to start playing the role of Katie, the bass guitarist, but I have played Sophie, the roadie, for the last 6 months.

What instruments do you play (in the show and outside of the show)?

In the show, I play the bass guitar, but I’ve only learnt how to play this instrument recently. When I was playing Sophie, I used to watch my friend playing in the role of Katie and think how great it would be to do that role, so I taught myself how to play the bass. My friend used to help me when we were backstage and I got tips from the other musicians on the show. I’ve learnt a lot in this role already and can’t wait to develop my skills further as I progress on the tour.  Outside of the show, I was learning how to play the electric guitar, which I love…but not as much as my bass now!!

Tell us what it was like finding out you were going to be in School of Rock ?

For my first role, the audition process was just under 12 months because of COVID, but when I did find out, it was the best news I had ever received as this was my dream show to be a part of. As a surprise, my Mum, Dad and brother had put balloons and banners around the house and when I walked in from school they had ties around their heads and were jumping around to the music ‘You’re in the band’. I burst into happy tears and started jumping around, I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to be in such an amazing show. For my role of Katie, my mum kept handing me bass related items, like a bass key ring, a jumper with lots of bass guitars on and a hat with a ‘K’ on…as soon as I realised why, I started crying again and practising my bass face, it was the best feeling ever!

What’s your favourite song in School of Rock ?

That’s an easy one, it’s definitely ‘Stick it to the Man”, as this is where the children from Horace Green discover their inner rock!

What are your favourite subjects at school?

My favourite subjects are Drama, Music, English and History. I like the practical elements of drama and music and I also love to read and I find learning about the past interesting.

How is it working with so many other like-minded people your age? Do you ever have jam sessions in between shows?

It’s amazing to be around others who are just like me with a passion for drama, especially musicals. We are always singing our favourite show tunes (poor chaperones). Before every show, we have ‘Band Jam’, which is when we play our instruments together in a fun and relaxed way. Sometimes we play songs from the show and sometimes we are taught new songs, which is so much fun. Band Jam really gets us ready for a great show and also helps the whole band bond together.

What’s touring been like?

Touring is an incredible experience, having the opportunity to travel all over the UK is such a fantastic opportunity. My favourite place so far has been Belfast, I loved going on the aeroplane with everyone and the chaperones took us around the city, which was so cool. It’s also great sleeping in hotels with my friends-we have so much fun (hotel breakfasts are incredible). On standby, the chaperones play games with us and we get to watch films with popcorn. We have to complete schoolwork each day in tutoring sessions, but that’s not too bad as we are all together, so it feels like school with your best friends. I do miss home, but we speak to our families every day and they come to see me on tour as often as possible.

Lastly, how would you describe the show in 3 words?

Energetic, hilarious and inspirational!

That concludes our series of cast interviews with School of Rock . Thanks so much for talking with us Ava, and congratulations on your new role!

The Fat Lip hitmakers – made up of Deryck Whibley, Dave Baksh, Jason ‘Cone’ McCaslin, Tom Thacker and Frank Zummo – will be bringing their Tour of the Setting Sum to arenas in October as they hit the road for the last time.

In a statement, Deryck, 44, said: ‘We are really excited to announce shows in the UK and Europe later this year.

‘This forms another leg of our last-ever shows and our fans overseas have been incredible to us over the years, so we can’t wait to put on the best show of our lives and go out on a high.”

The European leg kicks off on October 21 in Den Bosch, Netherlands, with shows set for Brussels, Caen, Prague, Paris, Budapest, Vienna, Rome and more, with other dates still to be announced.

The UK leg starts on October 26 in Leeds, followed by Glasgow, Manchester, Nottingham and London before the tour comes to an end in Cardiff on November 2.

Support for the UK shows comes from The Bronx, who will also join Sum 41 for certain European gigs, with Neck Deep playing on others.

Just last week current lead singer Deryk revealed the Canadian band haven’t seen their original frontman, Jon Marshall, since he left the group in 1997.

He told the Daily Star newspaper’s Wired column: ‘[The song ‘Johnny Libertine’] is a reference to Jon. He was the most punk-rock guy I have ever known.

‘We were 16 when we knew him and he was in this delirium, no plan B, we destroyed everything.

‘He was my best friend, then he left the group never to be seen again.’

The In Too Deep pop punk legends revealed earlier last year they would be splitting after the release of their eighth album Heaven x Hell and a farewell world tour.

Announcing their plans to disband, the group wrote at the time: ‘Being in Sum 41 since 1996 brought us some of the best moments of our lives. We are forever grateful to our fans both old and new, who have supported us in every way.

‘It is hard to articulate the love and respect we have for all of you and we wanted you to hear this from us first.’

In December last year, frontman Deryck said he felt ‘really good’ about their latest album, which has given him the closure he needs.

He told NME: ‘We didn’t know we’d be splitting up when we were making it, but I’ve been making records and touring with this band since I was 15.

‘I’ve had this feeling for a long time now that I want to do something different and it just feels like the right time. This album feels like the perfect way to go out.’

Foo Fighters deliver a rock 'n' roll masterclass in the Home Of Metal

“ It's times like these, you learn to live again …” Given how many songs they’ve got about picking yourself back up after being knocked down, it shouldn't be surprising that Foo Fighters have rallied and rebuilt after circumstances that could have derailed a lesser band. The March 2022 passing of much-loved drummer Taylor Hawkins devastated the rock world, but also left internal scars that could clearly be seen when the band hosted their celebratory tribute shows in London and Los Angeles in September that same year.

But where those shows were marked with emotional fragility, the Everything Or Nothing At All tour sees Dave Grohl's band fired up and playing as if they've got something to prove. With Josh Freese behind the kit now, the Los Angeles-based collective kick off their tour-closing show at Villa Park tackling All My Life, No Son Of Mine, Rescued and The Pretender with explosive energy, Grohl shrieking with joyous abandon that grows even more excitable as a late evening downpour causes a rainbow to form overhead during Breakout .

After the all-star performances at Wembley in September 2022, the Foos have apparently decided that not only will they fill their sets with an astonishing array of their own hits and choice cuts, but they'll also chuck an array of covers into the mix, too. No Son Of Mine is cut with cheeky snippets of Paranoid and Enter Sandman, while a crowd emergency at the start of Walk prompts Grohl to start playing Stairway To Heaven , the crowd singing the whole first verse.

The hits just keep coming, too: Times Like These regains some of the triumphant edge after its more emotional renditions in recent years, while My Hero is turned into a piano ballad/rock anthem hybrid. But the best is yet to come.

"This is the final night of our UK tour and we like to do something special for those final shows," Grohl tells the crowd. "This guy grew up a couple of streets away from here, and has never seen a show here, let alone played one... Let me introduce, Geezer Butler!"

The cheers as Black Sabbath's bassist ambles onstage are thunderous and Grohl clearly has the time of his life doing his best Ozzy Osbourne impression for the ensuing cover of Paranoid , bouncing on the microphone and generally showing himself as the dyed-in-the-wool rock'n'roll superfan he's always been.

At its heart, that sense of a shared love for rock fandom is a key to the magic of a Foo Fighters show in 2024. Balancing big hits with fan favourites and new material keeps the set feeling fresh and vibrant, more recent songs such as The Sky Is A Neighborhood and Rescued fitting in seamlessly. An acoustic trilogy of Skin And Bones , Big Me and Under You offers a brief respite from the bells-and-whistles trappings of enormodome rock, but even in their indulgences Foo Fighters remain remarkably liberated.

The main set ends with Best Of You , the melodic stadium-wide sing-along continuing long after the band leave the stage. It's testament to the night's electric atmosphere that even when the band come back on with 10-minute album cut The Teacher, Grohl's tribute to his late mother, the crowd still respond rapturously, setting up a colossal closing one-two that includes a guest appearance from Taylor Hawkins' son Shane behind the kit on This Is A Call and an utterly enthralling Everlong, the stadium lighting up as the night's closing song hits its crescendo.

Amidst such joyous scenes, it feels like the band have truly turned a corner. At this point, Foo Fighters aren't just putting on a show, they're putting on the biggest rock'n'roll celebration on the planet, a three-hour, 27-song masterclass that truly sets a standard all rock bands should aspire to.
