As the world’s only superpower and biggest economy by a huge margin, almost everyone on the planet knows something about the USA, even if they’ve never been. The Statue of Liberty, the Empire State, the Hollywood sign, Las Vegas neon, Golden Gate and the White House have long been global icons, and American brands and images are familiar everywhere, from Apple computers and Levi’s to Coca-Cola and hot dogs. Yet first-time visitors should expect some surprises .

Where to go in the USA

Outdoor activities in the usa, sports in the usa, usa: the musical melting pot.

Though its cities draw the most tourists – New York, New Orleans, Miami, Los Angeles and San Francisco are all incredible destinations in their own right – America is above all a land of stunningly diverse and achingly beautiful landscapes . In one nation you have the mighty Rockies and spectacular Cascades, the vast, mythic desert landscapes of the Southwest, the endless, rolling plains of Texas and Kansas, the tropical beaches and Everglades of Florida, the giant redwoods of California and the sleepy, pristine villages of New England.

You can soak up the mesmerizing vistas in Crater Lake, Yellowstone and Yosemite national parks, stand in awe at the Grand Canyon, hike the Black Hills, cruise the Great Lakes, paddle in the Mississippi, surf the gnarly breaks of Oahu and get lost in the vast wilderness of Alaska. Or you could easily plan a trip that focuses on the out-of-the-way hamlets, remote prairies, eerie ghost towns and forgotten byways that are every bit as “American” as its showpiece icons and monuments.

The sheer size of the country prevents any sort of overarching statement about the typical American experience, just as the diversity of its people undercuts any notion of the typical American. Icons as diverse as Mohammed Ali, Louis Armstrong, Sitting Bull, Hillary Clinton, Michael Jordan, Madonna, Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, Elvis Presley, Mark Twain, John Wayne and Walt Disney continue to inspire and entertain the world, and everyone has heard of the blues, country and western, jazz, rock ’n’ roll and hip-hop – all American musical innovations.

There are Irish Americans, Italian Americans, African Americans, Chinese Americans and Latinos, Texan cowboys and Bronx hustlers, Seattle hipsters and Alabama pastors, New England fishermen, Las Vegas showgirls and Hawaiian surfers. Though it often sounds clichéd to foreigners, the only thing that holds this bizarre federation together is the oft-maligned “American Dream”. While the USA is one of the world’s oldest still-functioning democracies and the roots of its European presence go back to the 1500s, the palpable sense of newness here creates an odd sort of optimism, wherein anything seems possible and fortune can strike at any moment.

Indeed, aspects of American culture can be difficult for many visitors to understand, despite the apparent familiarity: its obsession with guns; the widely held belief that “government” is bad; the real, genuine pride in the American Revolution and the US Constitution, two hundred years on; the equally genuine belief that the USA is the “greatest country on earth”; the wild grandstanding of its politicians (especially at election time); and the bewildering contradiction of its great liberal and open-minded traditions with laissez-faire capitalism and extreme cultural and religious conservatism. That’s America: diverse, challenging, beguiling, maddening at times, but always entertaining and always changing. And while there is no such thing as a typical American person or landscape, there can be few places where strangers can feel so confident of a warm reception.

Every trip to the USA is unique and that's why it's essential to stay protected. With our go-to travel insurance provider, Heymondo , you get great value and 24/7 support wherever you are.

The most invigorating American expeditions are often those that take in more than one region. You do not, however, have to cross the entire continent from shore to shore in order to appreciate its amazing diversity; it would take a long time to see the whole country, and the more time you spend simply travelling, the less time you’ll have to savour the small-town pleasures and backroad oddities that may well provide your strongest memories. Unless you’re travelling to and within a centralized location such as New York City, you’ll need a car – that mandatory component of life in the USA.

Florida

The obvious place to start for most people is New York City – international colossus of culture and finance, with a colourful history and numerous skyscrapers to prove its status as the essential American city. While you could easily spend weeks exploring the place, just a little more effort will take you into the deeper reaches of the Mid-Atlantic region to the north. Here, whether in upstate New York, New Jersey or Pennsylvania, major cities such as Philadelphia and Pittsburgh border a landscape of unexpected charm and beauty, from the bucolic hamlets of Amish country and the wilderness of the Adirondack Mountains to iconic sights such as Niagara Falls and holiday favourites like the Catskills. Next door, New England has a similarly varied appeal; most visitors know it for the colonial and history-rich city of Boston, but there’s much to be said for its rural byways, leading to centuries-old villages in Vermont and New Hampshire, bayside Massachusetts and the rugged individualism of the lobster-catching harbours and mountains of Maine – which take up nearly half the region.

Seven hundred miles west lie the Great Lakes, on the whole the country’s most underappreciated region; vigorous cities including Chicago and Minneapolis, isolated and evocative lakeshores in Michigan and Minnesota, and rousing college towns such as Madison, Wisconsin, reward any visitor with more than a few days to explore. Bordering Ohio to the east, the nearby Capital Region is the home of Washington DC, capital of the nation and centrepiece for its grandest museums and monuments. Nearby Baltimore is one of the region’s few other big cities, and to the south the old tobacco country of Virginia holds a fair share of American history while coal-mining West Virginia has a scattering of curious natural treasures.

Although Virginia is technically part of the South, for the purest experience you’ll need to venture even further to get the feel of its charismatic churches, BBQ dinners, country music and lively cities such as Atlanta and Memphis. The “deepest” part of the South lies in Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi, and in these states – with their huge plantations and long history of slavery – you’ll get a very different view of American life than anywhere else in the country. Other Southern states have their own unique cultures: Florida is a mix of old-fashioned Southern manners and backwater swamps leavened with ultra-modern cities including Miami, Latino culture, miles of tempting beaches and the lustrous Keys islands; Louisiana offers more atmospheric swamps and “Cajun” culture, with New Orleans one of the few spots in the USA with a strongly Catholic, yet broadly indulgent culture of drinking, dancing and debauchery; and Texas is the country’s capital for oil-drilling, BBQ-eating and right-wing-politicking, with huge expanses of land, equally big cities and plenty of history.

The Great Plains, which sit in the geographical centre of the country, are often overlooked by visitors, but include many of America’s most well-known sights, from Mount Rushmore in South Dakota to the Gateway Arch in St Louis and the Wild West town of Dodge City in Kansas. To the west rise the great peaks of the Rockies, and with them a melange of exciting cities such as Denver, beautiful mountain scenery like Montana’s Glacier National Park, the geysers of Yellowstone and great opportunities for skiing throughout at places like Idaho’s Sun Valley. Bordering the southern side of the Rockies, the desert Southwest region is also rich with astounding natural beauty – whether in the colossal chasm of the Grand Canyon, striking national parks at Zion and Canyonlands or the Native American heart of the Four Corners region – along with a handful of charming towns and less interesting big cities.

The country’s most populous state is, of course, California, synonymous with the idea of “the West Coast” and its freewheeling culture of surfing, libertine lifestyles and self-worship. However, the further from the water you get, the less the stereotypes hold, especially in the lava beds and redwoods of the far north, the ghost towns and magnificent Yosemite in the Sierras and the intriguing deserts of Death Valley. To the state’s north, Oregon and Washington – the rain-soaked pair making up the Pacific Northwest – offer pleasantly progressive towns such as Seattle and Portland and some of the most striking scenery anywhere in the USA: the stunning landscape of the Columbia River Gorge, the pristine islands of the San Juans, the snowy peaks of the Cascades and more.

Beyond the lower 48 states, Alaska is a winter wonderland of great mountains and icy spires, with few roads and people, but much to offer anyone with a zest for the outdoors and the unexpected. Hawaii is the country’s holiday paradise, a handful of splendid islands in the central Pacific with remote jungle settings and roaring volcanoes.

Coated by dense forests, cut by deep canyons and capped by great mountains, the USA is blessed with fabulous backcountry and wilderness areas. Even the heavily populated East Coast has its share of open space, notably along the Appalachian Trail, which winds from Mount Katahdin in Maine to the southern Appalachians in Georgia – some two thousand miles of untrammelled woodland. To experience the full breathtaking sweep of America’s wide-open stretches, however, head west: to the Rockies, the red-rock deserts of the Southwest or right across the continent to the amazing wild spaces of the West Coast. On the downside, be warned that in many coastal areas, the shoreline can be disappointingly hard to access, with a high proportion under private ownership.

National parks and monuments

The National Park Service administers both national parks and national monuments. Its rangers do a superb job of providing information and advice to visitors, maintaining trails and organizing such activities as free guided hikes and campfire talks.

In principle, a national park preserves an area of outstanding natural beauty, encompassing a wide range of terrain and prime examples of particular landforms and wildlife. Thus Yellowstone has boiling geysers and herds of elk and bison, while Yosemite offers towering granite walls and cascading waterfalls. A national monument is usually much smaller, focusing perhaps on just one archeological site or geological phenomenon, such as Devil’s Tower in Wyoming. Altogether, the national park system comprises around four hundred units, including national seashores, lakeshores, battlefields and other historic sites.

While national parks tend to be perfect places to hike – almost all have extensive trail networks – all are far too large to tour entirely on foot (Yellowstone, for example, is bigger than Delaware and Rhode Island combined). Even in those rare cases where you can use public transport to reach a park, you’ll almost certainly need some sort of vehicle to explore it once you’re there. The Alaska parks are mostly howling wilderness, with virtually no roads or facilities for tourists – you’re on your own.

Most parks and monuments charge admission fees, ranging from $5 to $25, which cover a vehicle and all its occupants for up to a week. For anyone on a touring vacation, it may well make more sense to buy the Inter-agency Annual Pass, also known as the “America the Beautiful Pass”. Sold for $80 at all federal parks and monuments, or online at store.usgs.gov/pass, this grants unrestricted access for a year to the bearer, and any accompanying passengers in the same vehicle, to all national parks and monuments, as well as sites managed by such agencies as the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Forest Service and the BLM. It does not, however, cover or reduce additional fees like charges for camping in official park campgrounds, or permits for backcountry hiking or rafting.

Two further passes, obtainable at any park but not online, grant free access for life to all national parks and monuments, again to the holder and any accompanying passengers, and also provide a fifty percent discount on camping fees. The Senior Pass is available to any US citizen or permanent resident aged 62 or older for a one-time fee of $10, while the Access Pass is issued free to blind or permanently disabled US citizens or permanent residents. While hotel-style lodges are found only in major parks, every park or monument tends to have at least one well-organized campground. Often, a cluster of motels can be found not far outside the park boundaries. With appropriate permits – subject to restrictions in popular parks – backpackers can also usually camp in the backcountry (a general term for areas inaccessible by road).

Other public lands

National parks and monuments are often surrounded by tracts of national forest – also federally administered but much less protected. These too usually hold appealing rural campgrounds but, in the words of the slogan, each is a “Land Of Many Uses”, and usually allows logging and other land-based industry (thankfully, more often ski resorts than strip mines).

Other government departments administer wildlife refuges, national scenic rivers, recreation areas and the like. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has the largest holdings of all, most of it open rangeland, such as in Nevada and Utah, but also including some enticingly out-of-the-way reaches. Environmentalist groups engage in endless running battles with developers, ranchers and the extracting industries over uses – or alleged misuses – of federal lands.

While state parks and state monuments, administered by individual states, preserve sites of more limited, local significance, many are explicitly intended for recreational use, and thus hold better campgrounds than their federal equivalents.

Camping and backpacking

The ideal way to see the great outdoors – especially if you’re on a low budget – is to tour by car and camp in state and federal campgrounds. Typical public campgrounds range in price from free (usually when there’s no water available, which may be seasonal) to around $30 per night. Fees at the generally less scenic commercial campgrounds – abundant near major towns, and often resembling open-air hotels, complete with shops and restaurants – are more like $20–35. If you’re camping in high season, either reserve in advance or avoid the most popular areas.

Backcountry camping in the national parks is usually free, by permit only. Before you set off on anything more than a half-day hike, and whenever you’re headed for anywhere at all isolated, be sure to inform a ranger of your plans, and ask about weather conditions and specific local tips. Carry sufficient food and drink to cover emergencies, as well as all the necessary equipment and maps. Check whether fires are permitted; even if they are, try to use a camp stove in preference to local materials. In wilderness areas, try to camp on previously used sites. Where there are no toilets, bury human waste at least six inches into the ground and 100ft from the nearest water supply and campground.

Health issues

Backpackers should never drink from rivers and streams; you never know what acts people – or animals – have performed further upstream. Giardia – a water-borne bacteria that causes an intestinal disease characterized by chronic diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, fatigue and weight loss – is a serious problem. Water that doesn’t come from a tap should be boiled for at least five minutes, or cleansed with an iodine-based purifier or a giardia-rated filter.

Hiking at lower elevations should present few problems, though near water mosquitoes can drive you crazy; Avon Skin-so-Soft or anything containing DEET are fairly reliable repellents. Ticks – tiny beetles that plunge their heads into your skin and swell up – are another hazard. They sometimes leave their heads inside, causing blood clots or infections, so get advice from a ranger if you’ve been bitten. One species of tick causes Lyme Disease, a serious condition that can even affect the brain. Nightly inspections of your skin are strongly recommended.

Beware, too, of poison oak, which grows throughout the west, usually among oak trees. Its leaves come in groups of three (the middle one on a short stem) and are distinguished by prominent veins and shiny surfaces. If you come into contact with it, wash your skin (with soap and cold water) and clothes as soon as possible – and don’t scratch. In serious cases, hospital emergency rooms can give antihistamine or adrenaline shots. A comparable curse is poison ivy, found throughout the country. For both plants, remember the sage advice, “Leaves of three, let it be”.

Mountain hikes

Take special care hiking at higher elevations, for instance in the 14,000ft peaks of the Rockies, or in California’s Sierra Nevada (and certainly in Alaska). Late snows are common, and in spring avalanches are a real danger, while meltwaters make otherwise simple stream crossings hazardous. Weather conditions can also change abruptly. Altitude sickness can affect even the fittest of athletes: take it easy for your first few days above 7000ft. Drink lots of water, avoid alcohol, eat plenty of carbohydrates and protect yourself from the sun.

Desert hikes

If you intend to hike in the desert, carry plentiful extra food and water, and never go anywhere without a map. Cover most of your ground in early morning: the midday heat is too debilitating. If you get lost, find some shade and wait. So long as you’ve registered, the rangers will eventually come looking for you.

At any time of year, you’ll stay cooler during the day if you wear full-length sleeves and trousers, while a wide-brimmed hat and good sunglasses will spare you the blinding headaches that can result from the desert light. You may also have to contend with flash floods, which can appear from nowhere. Never camp in a dry wash, and don’t attempt to cross flooded areas until the water has receded.

It’s essential to carry – and drink – large quantities of water in the desert. In particular, hiking in typical summer temperatures requires drinking a phenomenal amount. Loss of the desire to eat or drink is an early symptom of heat exhaustion, so it’s possible to become seriously dehydrated without feeling thirsty. Watch out for signs of dizziness or nausea; if you feel weak and stop sweating, it’s time to get to the doctor. Check whether water is available on your trail; ask a ranger, and carry plenty with you even if it is.

When driving in the desert, carry ample water in the car, take along an emergency pack with flares, a first-aid kit and snakebite kit, matches and a compass. A shovel, tyre pump and extra petrol are always a good idea. If the engine overheats, don’t turn it off; instead, try to cool it quickly by turning the front end of the car towards the wind. Carefully pour some water on the front of the radiator, and turn the air conditioning off and the heat up full blast. In an emergency, never panic and leave the car: you’ll be harder to find wandering around alone.

Adventure travel

The opportunities for adventure travel in the USA are all but endless, whether your tastes run towards whitewater rafting down the Colorado River, mountain biking in the volcanic Cascades, canoeing down the headwaters of the Mississippi River, horseback riding in Big Bend on the Rio Grande in Texas or Big Wall rock climbing on the sheer granite monoliths of Yosemite Valley.

While an exhaustive listing of the possibilities could fill a huge volume, certain places have an especially high concentration of adventure opportunities, such as Moab, Utah or New Hampshire’s White Mountains.

Downhill ski resorts can be found all over the USA. The eastern resorts of Vermont and New York State, however, pale by comparison with those of the Rockies, such as Vail and Aspen in Colorado, and the Sierra Nevada in California. Expect to pay $45–100 per day (depending on the quality and popularity of the resort) for lift tickets, plus another $30 or more per day to rent equipment.

A cheaper alternative is cross-country skiing, or ski touring. Backcountry ski lodges dot mountainous areas along both coasts and in the Rockies. They offer a range of rustic accommodation, equipment rental and lessons, from as little as $20 a day for skis, boots and poles, up to about $200 for an all-inclusive weekend tour.

Watch out for bears, deer, moose, mountain lions and rattlesnakes in the backcountry, and consider the effect your presence can have on their environment.

Other than in a national park, you’re highly unlikely to encounter a bear. Even there, it’s rare to stumble across one in the wilderness. If you do, don’t run, just back away slowly. Most fundamentally, it will be after your food, which should be stored in airtight containers when camping. Ideally, hang both food and garbage from a high but slender branch some distance from your camp. Never attempt to feed bears, and never get between a mother and her young. Young animals are cute; their irate mothers are not.

Snakes and creepy-crawlies

Though the deserts in particular are home to a wide assortment of poisonous creatures, these are rarely aggressive towards humans. To avoid trouble, observe obvious precautions. Don’t attempt to handle wildlife; keep your eyes open as you walk, and watch where you put your hands when scrambling over obstacles; shake out shoes, clothing and bedding before use; and back off if you do spot a creature, giving it room to escape.

If you are bitten or stung, current medical thinking rejects the concept of cutting yourself open and attempting to suck out the venom. Whether snake, scorpion or spider is responsible, apply a cold compress to the wound, constrict the area with a tourniquet to prevent the spread of venom, drink lots of water and bring your temperature down by resting in a shady area. Stay as calm as possible and seek medical help immediately.

As well as being good fun, catching a baseball game at Chicago’s Wrigley Field on a summer afternoon or joining the screaming throngs at a Steelers football game in Pittsburgh can give visitors an unforgettable insight into a town and its people. Professional teams almost always put on the most spectacular shows, but big games between college rivals, Minor League baseball games and even Friday night high-school football games provide an easy and enjoyable way to get on intimate terms with a place.

Specific details for the most important teams in all the sports are given in the various city accounts in this Guide. They can also be found through the Major League websites: mlb.com (baseball); nba.com (basketball); nfl.com (football); nhl.com (ice hockey); and mlssoccer.com (soccer).

Major spectator sports

Baseball, because the Major League teams play so many games (162 in the regular season, usually at least five a week from April to September, plus the October playoffs), is probably the easiest sport to catch when travelling. The ballparks – such as Boston’s historic Fenway Park, New York’s famed Yankee Stadium, LA’s glamorous Dodger Stadium or Baltimore’s evocative Camden Yards – are great places to spend time. It’s also among the cheapest sports to watch (from around $10–15 a seat for the bleachers), and tickets are usually easy to come by.

Pro football, the American variety, is quite the opposite. Tickets are exorbitantly expensive and almost impossible to obtain (if the team is any good), and most games are played in huge, fortress-like stadiums far out in the suburbs; you’ll do better stopping in a bar to watch it on TV.

College football is a whole lot better and more exciting, with chanting crowds, cheerleaders and cheaper tickets, which can be hard to obtain in football-crazed college towns in parts of the South and Midwest. Although New Year’s Day games such as the Rose Bowl or the Orange Bowl are all but impossible to see live, big games like USC vs UCLA, Michigan vs Ohio State or Notre Dame vs anybody are not to be missed if you’re anywhere nearby.

Basketball also brings out intense emotions. The protracted pro playoffs run well into June. The men’s month-long college playoff tournament, called “March Madness”, is acclaimed by many as the nation’s most exciting sports extravaganza, taking place at venues spread across the country in many small to mid-sized towns.

Ice hockey, usually referred to simply as hockey, was long the preserve of Canada and cities in the far north of the USA, but now penetrates the rest of the country, with a concentration around the East Coast and Great Lakes. Tickets, particularly for successful teams, are hard to get and not cheap.

Other sports

Soccer remains much more popular as a participant sport, especially for kids, than a spectator one, and those Americans that are interested in it usually follow foreign matches like England’s Premier League, rather than their home-grown talent. The good news for international travellers is that any decent-sized city will have one or two pubs where you can catch games from England, various European countries or Latin America; check out Live Sport TV for a list of such establishments and match schedules.

Golf, once the province of moneyed businessmen, has attracted a wider following in recent decades due to the rise of celebrity golfers such as Tiger Woods and the construction of numerous municipal and public courses. You’ll have your best access at these, where a round of golf may cost from $15 for a beaten-down set of links to around $50 for a chintzier course. Private golf courses have varying standards for allowing non-members to play (check their websites) and steeper fees – over $100 a person for the more elite courses.

The other sporting events that attract national interest involve four legs or four wheels. The Kentucky Derby, held in Louisville on the first Saturday in May, is the biggest date on the horse-racing calendar. Also in May, the NASCAR Indianapolis 500, the world’s largest motor-racing event, fills that city with visitors throughout the month, with practice sessions and carnival events building up to the big race.

Some of the world’s greatest musical genres took root in cities and small towns across America, products of the collisions of European, African and indigenous cultures.

The blues was forged from a combination of African and gospel sounds into a simple twelve-bar form during the late nineteenth century. You can still catch Mississippi blues in Delta juke joints, and electrified urban blues in the gritty clubs of Chicago.

Jazz took root in the Creole culture of New Orleans, blending African traditions with western techniques to create a distinctly American art form. Jazz is still dance music in New Orleans; cooler urban stylings can be enjoyed in clubs in New York.

Nashville remains synonymous with country and western ; outside the cities, rural Appalachia brims with backwoods fiddlers and Louisiana’s sleepy bayous are alive with Cajun and zydeco.

Rock ’n’ roll has come a long way since its blues-based infancy, when young trucker Elvis Presley shook up white country with raw R&B in 1950s Memphis. Spiky New York punk, quirky Ohio industrial, furious LA hardcore, slacker Seattle grunge, and spaced-out neo-psychedelia are but a few of the rock genres that continue to thrive in the USA.

In the 1960s, the heartfelt soul of masters like Otis Redding preceded the explosion of talent that came to define the Motown era, born in Detroit.

Loaded with attitude, street-style and political savvy, hip-hop was born on the streets of New York, and later LA. Today any city with a major black population has a distinctive rap scene, including in the so-called “Dirty South”, where rappers play on the raw call-and-response stylings of early blues.

Modern dance music had its genesis in Chicago house , New York garage and Detroit techno , though club culture is now a global phenomenon.

USA - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

A trip to USA should not be limited to a few cities only. There is so much to see and do - cultural and natural, when on a holiday in USA.

Sure, cities like Las Vegas, San Francisco, New York, Washington D.C. and Los Angeles find their way into many traveler itineraries. They even offer more than enough to keep you occupied for weeks at a stretch. But America’s true beauty can be found in its wine regions, national parks, picturesque drives, exotic coastline and quaint little towns.

Tour Highlights

  • Ride to the top of the Empire State Building
  • Gawk at the majestic Grand Canyon National Park
  • Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge
  • Explore the natural phenomenon of Yellowstone National Park
  • Take the ferry to see the Statue of Liberty
  • Test your luck on the Las Vegas slot machines
  • Get lost in Florida's many theme parks

Travel Tips

  • The US is a massive country, covering 3.8 million square miles. Unless you’re planning on a (very) extended visit, be sure to do plenty of research beforehand and identify the attractions you most want to see.
  • Bear in mind that the US does not use the metric system like most of the world. This is especially important if driving a car, as speed limits and distances are measured in miles rather than kilometres.
  • Because it’s such a large and diverse country, you’ll find plenty of differences as you travel from state to state. The people, the cuisine, the accent and even the terminology changes between states. A soft drink might also be called a soda or a pop, depending on where you are.
  • Be sure to purchase health insurance before travelling to the US, as healthcare costs can be very expensive.
  • You want it? You got it. No matter the time of day or day of the year, you’ll always find an open shop or restaurant as you travel through the US - from fast food chains to old 24-hour highway diners.

Our top 5 things to do in the United States

Our USA tour packages will show you all the iconic highlights plus the unexpected gems, from the streets of New York to the vast depths of the Grand Canyon.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Known as ‘the Met’, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is the world’s third most-visited art museum and the biggest art museum in the United States. Founded in 1870, the Met houses over two million works, from antique weapons and ancient Egyptian art, to European sculptural masterpieces and contemporary American art.

Art Institute of Chicago

Founded in 1879 in Chicago’s Grant Park, the Art Institute of Chicago is one of the largest and oldest art museums in the United States. With a permanent collection of around 300,000 works, from Pablo Picasso’s The Old Guitarist to Grant Wood’s American Gothic, you can spend hours wandering the collections.

American Museum of Natural History

Located in Theodore Roosevelt Park across from Central Park in New York, the American Museum of Natural History is a massive display, with 45 exhibition halls, a planetarium and a library. The museum has over 33 million specimens, ranging from plants, animals, fossils and meteorites to human remains and cultural artefacts.

Best museums in the United States

When you tour the states with Trafalgar, we’ll show you the best museums and galleries across the country, from the famous ‘Met’ to the art of Chicago.

New York Bagels

Boiled then baked and fluffy yet dense, with a glossy, crunchy crust, the New York bagel has been perfected to an art. Our Local Specialists will take you to a 100-year old Jewish deli in the Upper West Side, where you can sample the best of these New York delicacies.

The American lobster is a species found on the Atlantic coast, with the state of Maine being the largest suppliers. The lobster is steamed or boiled and commonly served whole, and you’ll be given a lobster bib and a set of nutcrackers for your glorious lobster eating experience.

Beef Burger

A juicy beef patty, served with cheese, onion, pickles, lettuce, tomato, and all the special sauces you could want for - burgers are the quintessential American dish. They’re big business in the United States, and we’ll show you where to find the best burgers in town.

Best food in the United States

With a blend of influences from the finest cuisines from all over the world, American food is absolutely yummy. We’ll show you our favourite places for a feast of classic burgers, bagels, peanut butter sandwiches, cakes and more.

Dollar bills

Tipping is customary in the United States, and you’ll be expected to tip at least 15% (although 20 - 25% is appreciated), so be sure to keep some US bills on hand.

Big appetite

the tour itself was amazing. The national parks do not disappoint. The travel accomodations were very cramped and uncomfortable. I am only 5 foot tall and I was cramped in this 14 passenger van. Food opportunities were limited.
Fantastic experience - efficient use of time, great itinerary. Well-informed and interesting guide who is also just a great person.

Sehr gute Reiseleitung !
One of the best things we have ever done. Superb organisation and the tour leader Kaitlyn was great - very knowledgeable. There were 8 on our tour and we got lucky with the other people going as they were easy to get along with. I would 100% recommend this tour and this company. Almost perfect but a few minor things could improve it. The minibus was great for 8 but would have felt cramped if the tour had been full. You cover a lot of miles to get between the parks so are on the bus a lot - therefore WiFi would have been good on the bus particularly as non US mobile holders. Rubys Inn was not so good - very basic and our room wasn’t as clean as it should have been. Gouldings Lodge was much better but there is literally nothing to do when you get there - also be aware that as it’s on Navajo land there is no bar area or alcohol and we would have liked a cold beer after a long day. Again not a real problem but would have been nice to know in advance. My husband would have also liked a longer stop at the Route 66 town. These are super picky points and no one should be put off booking this. Every day was different and all of the parks had their own appeal. Antelope canyon is a must see but the 4x4 Jeep ride was equally good and the Grand Canyon is breathtakingly awesome.

1. The bus driver, did an excellent job. 2. We could of used a better bus with a bathroom 3. The tour guides were good, they were very informative about our activities 4. The motels chosen were ver ckean 5. The length of time, was right for the amount of days 6. The travel packet i received needed clearer instructions, the hotel staff were not familiar with this tour operator. nor were they able to help me. 7. The security guard berween the luxor and the excalibur srated "the bus location and pick up tours:, was the place to be. 8. I was in the wrong location, after talking to your customer service, which at first she was hesitating to help me. She finslly was sble to contact me with Patrivia. Whom did not hesitate to contact me via text. Aand pick me up! Patricia's excellent customer service. Changed the entire scenario., and made it possible for me to join this wonderful 3 day tour of sightseeing. Photography. And hiking.
While the Niagara full trip was well-organized and enjoyable, I must express some disappointment with the Washington portion of our journey. During our time in Washington, we felt that our itinerary did not allow us to explore the city's attractions as much as we would have liked. Spending a significant amount of time at the cemetery felt like a missed opportunity to experience the vibrant culture and history of Washington. In future trips, I suggest considering a more balanced itinerary that allows for ample time to explore the various attractions and landmarks that each destination has to offer.

Rachel was an outstanding driver and tour guide. She cared about her guests and made sure our interests were met. She is a great ambassador for your organization. The parks were great and having her in charge of our schedule was a bonus. I would skip the museum stop and consider some other options for meals when possible but the hotels were great. A bathroom on the bus would be nice to avoid a few stops. Wonderful trip!
I recently came back from Utah's 5 NPs with friends who had never been to these breathtaking parks. From the moment we set out, Rachel Eppard's passion for the region's natural wonders was palpable. Her knowledge about the parks' history, geology and wildlife enriched every moment of our journey. The tour was meticulously planned, ensuring we maximized our time in each park and Rachel's friendly and outgoing demeanor and enthusiasm was informative and very enjoyable. We had a good group of 12 and I believe each of us truly enjoyed her guidance. She effortlessly balanced insightful commentary and gave us space to soak in the natural splendor around us. The attention to detail extended beyond the parks with the local restaurants enhancing the overall experience. I cannot recommend Rachel Eppard highly enough for anyone looking to explore Utah's National Parks. Her professionalism and genuine love for the outdoors made for an unforgettable adventure. Thank you Rachel! You go girl!

We were fortunate to have Claire Kredens as our driver guide. She is a gifted leader and could cope with ant situation. Such a tour is useful to learn which cities you might like to re-visit because our time in each is very short. Four and five hour drives every other day is exhausting and maybe the number of places visited could be edited downward. On the whole, I enjoyed the trip altho the age range 15-99 is unwise. 15-80 would be much more realistic.
My son and I had a great hiking adventure on the Sedona tour! The scenery was stunning, the hikes were fun! Tolman was an excellent guide, who was very knowledgeable about the area, he had great hiking tips, and he picked some enjoyable challenging hikes for us! He was also an excellent cook! He prepared us some great meals! His positive outlook on everything helped the group of strangers on the trek quickly bond which led us all to have a great hiking experience!

Although the tour was very expensive- over $2000 for 3 days is over the top- it wss a great experience, saw lots of wildlife and the guide was outstanding
What an amazing experience this was; from the greeting and pick up by our guide/driver, to the phenomenal sights and the historical references that accompanied them! I am so pleased. This was an exceptionally planned tour that successfully met all of my needs. I would not change a thing and look forward to future adventures with them.

Excellent. Great guide, driver, weather, hotels, food. Great itenirary. Love love this trip.
Optional excursions were reasonably priced. Suggest you put together other places in each city as a walking guide or short taxi or uber ride. Example access to close by museums open late and could walk to from hotel. Free time activities and what they are and where located is helpful.tour guide can offer to accompany a group interested to explore more during free leisure tome.Provide more detail info about the logistics of site visits. Niagara falls..suggest more water proof gear clothing and shoe types etc. Terrain to expect when visiting certain sites and possible alternatives.climbing and how difficult-easy or more strenuous or advanced climbing activity. Overall, small groups so much better than filling up bus. Thank you for giving single travelers their own bus space. Would love to watch more travel videos on longer driving distances.

Good time with lots of riding in the van going to interesting places
We had a wonderful time. The tour was well planned and well managed. The CEO was excellent ..good driver, good communicator, had good knowledge of the local attractions and made great recommendations for restaurants. The group we were with was also a very pleasant group which made the experience that much more enjoyable. That said, would have loved to see the accommodations updated.. most except the Denali cabins were old and "weathered".

Infinite Adventures

Infinite Adventures

  • Excellent - 118 reviews for USA tours
It was my first group trip and also my first camping trip. I have to say it was one of the best trips I've been on. It was an adventure! We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights at Remote Camp. Tory and Dave took care of everything and made sure everyone had a great time. No matter what problem you had, they always helped each other! Dave cooked delicious food, we had marshmallows by the fire in the evening and it felt like family. It's a great tour and I can only recommend it to anyone! It certainly wasn't my last tour with Infinite Adventure! Many thanks to Tory, Dave and Natalie (who you could ask any question you wanted to know beforehand) for this unforgettable time! :)
Jump on the bus with Infinite Adventures for a magnificent Alaskan expedition! Dave and Tory are excellent guides and will keep you informed about the areas you visit and give expert advice. I found this to be a truly joyful experience!

Globus

  • Excellent - 74,885 reviews for USA tours
This was our second trip on Globus and both experiences were fantastic.
I was skeptical of a group tour, particularly by coach. The experienced guide, Jason, along with driver Shauna, changed my view completely.

The Coyote Trip

The Coyote Trip

  • Good - 11 reviews for USA tours
This trip was run like a school trip, we were told that we had to stick to the schedule rigidly even though I asked several times to visit a different museum/shop. Free time was limited and it seemed like the guide had specific ideas of what he wanted to do and see. Our guide also left us on a subway in New York to get home close to midnight and then we had issues getting checked into the hostel. FYI most tour guides make sure their group gets to the hotel safely and without hassle. Waste of time and money.
From a speedboat to the Statue of Liberty to fireworks on 4th July in Washington to hiking to Yosemite Falls, this trip showcased the very best the USA has to offer. I went on the 21 day Full Cyote trip from New York to San Francisco with my brother. With such a packed itinerary of included activities, it offered great value for money. The guides in every region we visited were excellent. A particular shout out to Ryan, who added in extra stops and experiences based on the group's interests. Other highlights included the Grand Canyon, Washington's museums, whale watching in Boston, cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge and sunset in Griffeths Park. I met a great group of people on the trip, and I wouldn't hesitate to book with the Cyote Trip again.

Had a wonderful time - a lot of hiking, seeing the sites in Alaska and viewing the Northern Lights.

My first experience with an organized tour like this. Expense alone will limit future trips. Much more walking than my wife was prepared for. This alone reduced her enjoyment. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and thorough with his planning and execution. Andrew has a fun personality and very personable. One item that disappointed me was the shuttle from airport to resort at both ends of the
Insights Tours are always amazing and this one was no exception. Nice balance of free time to relax and experience Hawaii on your own with visits to places on the islands to experience the culture. Learned a lot of Hawaii’s history throughout our visit. Overall a lovely experience and would highly recommend if you want to visit Hawaii and learn more about the islands.

We have chosen the tour specifically because it was in German and also in other languages shown. Also on our voucher was again confirmed the tour with professional, German-speaking tour guide. Unfortunately, the tour guides did not speak German. We were able to help ourselves a bit with the translation app but we also missed a lot of information. We are very disappointed about this and expect compensation. The tour guides have tried and were very nice also the tour was very nice.

The itinerary provided by tour radar was not exactly how the tour was set up. One of our stops said we would be doing a cruise on lake Powell. That was not provided with the tour. Also the hotels that they said we would be staying at did not line up.
Overall, the tour was very fun and we'll put together. The tour guides were all friendly, and seemed to work well as a team. Accomodations were not bad, but there were better options directly adjacent. Food options were pretty much all fast food, which makes sense for the tour concept. However, dinner options could have been a bit better. We really would have appreciated a little more hiking and exploring time, and a couple of the guides did the best to accommodate that. However, 20 minute stops are just not enough time to get "out and experience" the areas.

USA Travel Guide

Looking for an in-depth USA travel guide ?

Then you’re in the right place!

Whether you’re a born-and-raised American or exploring the country for the first time, the United States of America makes for an incredible trip.

From stunning national parks to vibrant cities, the USA truly has something for every kind of traveler.

Plus, there are so many ways to see the country. You can plan the ultimate road trip in the USA, circumnavigating the contiguous 48 states to get a comprehensive look at the nation, or just stick to one region, exploring the beauty and quirks of the area. There are also plenty of solo road trip ideas in the USA if you’re traveling alone.

The options are truly endless, so we’re here to help you plan the best USA vacation for you.

There are lots of ways to look at a map of the USA, but most experts generally break the country up into five major geographic regions, including the:

  • Western Region
  • Southwest Region
  • Midwest Region
  • Southeast Region
  • Northeast Region

The West , stretching from California to the Rocky Mountains, is home to many of the country’s most-visited National Parks. These each offer something different and you’ll definitely want to visit each one at some point in your life.

You can explore the desert in California’s Death Valley National Park, hike through the mountains of Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, visit Old Faithful at Yellowstone National Park, marvel at the mountain view at Yosemite National Park (especially from the Nevada Falls Loop and Glacier Point ), see out-of-this-world trees at Olympic National Park, and discover ancient cliff-side dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado.

You can also hit many of these parks on a west coast road trip in the USA, driving through California up to the Canadian border.

Prefer the beach?

Opt for a California coast road trip, complete with incredible ocean views — especially when driving Big Sur — and a few stops at the state’s famous wineries via a Paso Robles weekend getaway (just don’t drink and drive!).

Of course, the great states of Hawaii and Alaska are worth their own adventures, boasting some of the best sights in the nation.

The Southwest Region — made up of Arizona, New Mexico , Texas , and Oklahoma — offers a mix of old and new with incredible desert views, vibrant culture, and so much to see over just a few states.

Texas is worth a trip on its own for its incredible natural wonders and rich history. And did we mention the barbecue and Tex-Mex cuisine? No trip to the state is complete without it!

In Arizona, you can visit the famous Grand Canyon as well as other incredible sights like Monument Valley and Saguaro National Park.

New Mexico offers both desert adventures and incredible ski trails, making it a perfect destination all year round.

And don’t forget to get your kicks on Route 66 in Oklahoma!

The Midwest — a vast region spanning from the Dakotas in the west to Ohio in the east — offers much more than just corn fields.

South Dakota alone is home to some of the country’s top attractions, including Mount Rushmore and Badlands National Park. Get a taste of Southern Hospitality in the Southeast, a vibrant region stretching from Virginia to Louisiana. The region is home to some of the country’s best Atlantic beaches as well as some of the most delicious food you’ll ever eat. The picturesque city of Charleston in South Carolina offers incredible seaside views, colorful buildings, and a rich history worth exploring. Over in North Carolina, you can explore the Appalachian Trail, drive the Blue Ridge Parkway or pretend you’re part of the 1920s elite at the Biltmore in Asheville. We also can’t forget to mention Florida , one of the nation’s top tourist destinations for its gorgeous beaches, world-class theme parks and Latin American cultural influences. The region’s warm weather also makes it a perfect place to visit all year round (particularly if you’re trying to escape a gloomy winter!).

You can do some buffalo spotting in North Dakota’s Theodore Roosevelt National Park, featuring miles of some of the best hiking trails in the world and some of the most spectacular views of the stars you’ll ever see.

Need some city energy? Head to Chicago, an incredible city on Lake Michigan featuring some of the world’s top museums and cultural institutions.

Speaking of the Great Lakes, you’ll find most of them in the Midwest as well as plenty of ways to enjoy them.

Finally, there’s the mighty Northeast , spanning from Maryland to Maine.

This region is home to some of the most bustling cities in the country, including the capital of Washington, D.C., Boston, and New York City . From museums to vast city parks to chic boutiques, you won’t want for things to do in these world-class cities that attract tons of tourists every year.

There’s also much more to the region than just these bustling metropolises, though.

Stroll the boardwalk at the New Jersey shore and enjoy some frozen custard while you lounge on some of the country’s top beaches.

Or head up to New Hampshire to tackle Mount Washington — or just ride the Cog Railway up to the top.

And you can’t miss Acadia National Park, the jewel of Maine, with miles of rocky Atlantic coast and incredible foliage views in the autumn. No road trip in Maine would be complete without a stop here.

Wherever you choose to go, you’re bound to have a good time in the USA!

USA Travel Insurance

It doesn’t matter if you’re traveling solo or with a group on a USA tour. When visiting the United States — or any other country in the world — make sure to get travel insurance to protect your health and safety.

In my opinion, the best travel medical insurance for travelers is SafetyWing as they’ve got a large network and offer both short-term and long-term coverage — including coverage if you’re traveling for months as well as limited coverage in your home country).

Additionally, SafetyWing is budget-friendly and offers $250,000 worth of coverage with just one low overall deductible of $250.

With coverage, you’ll have peace of mind as you embark on your US travel itinerary.

USA Travel Guide FAQ

Below, find answers to frequently asked questions about traveling in the United States .

Q: What is the cheapest way to travel in the USA?

If you’re able to drive, driving yourself or renting a car is probably one of the least expensive ways to see the United States. You’ll have to factor in the costs of gas and parking, which can vary from state to state and city to city, as well as overnight lodging if you’re driving a particularly long distance and don’t have another person with whom to share driving duties.

If your own car is a gas-guzzler, consider renting a more efficient vehicle for your trip. The rental fees might be equal to the amount you’d pay for gas on your own. The great thing about driving is that you have much more flexibility and can create your own itinerary and tour route.

For those who don’t drive, the bus is probably the cheapest way to see the country. Major national bus lines like Greyhound and Coach USA make a plethora of stops throughout the country, giving you plenty of travel options.

Bus journeys can be long, though, and usually involve long layovers at bus stations and short rest stops. You’ll want to factor in the cost of food and beverages when making your budget for a bus trip.

Bus seats also aren’t ideal for sleeping and the whole experience is far from glamorous, but it’s a great way to see the country while saving some cash.

Don’t have a ton of time to spend on the road? Flying is probably your best option.

While domestic flights in the US can get pricey, you can get some cheap fares from budget airlines and even major carriers with some smart searching techniques. Look into low-cost airlines like Frontier, Spirit, and Southwest, which often offer one-way flights for as low as $50.

You’ll probably end up paying extra for things that would normally be included in your fare (i.e. carry-on bags and seat assignments), so keep that in mind when booking.

You can also save by booking weekday flights (particularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays), flying in and out of competitive markets like New York City, and setting flight alerts on travel search engines like Kayak.

Q: How much does a US trip cost?

The cost of a trip to the United States is highly dependent on your travel itinerary. You’ll end up spending a lot more in major cities like New York and Los Angeles and big tourist destinations like Las Vegas than you will in smaller towns and more rural areas.

That said, the average traveler spends about $222 USD per day in the U.S. on transportation, accommodations, food, activities and other travel expenses.

Do some research into the destinations you want to visit (or check out our specific destination pages listed above) to get a sense of how much money you’ll need for each place.

Q: What is the best road trip in the USA?

There are plenty of great road trip routes you can take to explore the United States — and even great solo road trips (becaue there truly are so many great places for solo travel in the United States ). The one you choose definitely depends on what you want to see and how long you want to travel.

If you want a comprehensive view of the country, though, consider taking two weeks for a cross-country road trip. There are lots of ways to do this but most travelers start in an east coast city like New York or Washington, D.C. and make their ways west.

You can choose to go west via the south, stopping in Tennessee, driving across the great state of Texas and cruising through the southwest to finish up in Southern California. Here you can visit national parks and do hikes like the Lost Horse Mine Trail and Hidden Valley Nature Trail — both in Joshua Tree National Park. There are also loads of sumptuous jacuzzi suites in San Diego if you’re looking to relax.

Alternatively, you can drive through the Midwest and stop into some of the major national parks as you make your way through to San Francisco or Seattle. Bonus: you’ll love these amazing Seattle hotels with hot tubs !

And for more of a straight shot across the country, there’s always US-50, or the Loneliest Road, running from Ocean City, MD to Sacramento, CA and passing through West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada. That’s one way to cross a bunch of states off your list and is a true highlight of any North America travel guide !

Q: What are the best things to do in the USA?

The United States is a huge country with plenty of must-see attractions you definitely won’t want to miss.

The country’s national parks are some of its most popular attractions for travelers of all kinds. From the diverse landscape of Yellowstone to the breathtaking beauty of Yosemite to the pristine lakes of Glacier National Park, there are so many incredible natural wonders to explore here.

One of the most popular parks is probably Grand Canyon National Park, which offers 227 miles of rivers, rocks and incredible views in Arizona. Hike down the famous Bright Angel Trail, raft the Colorado River, or walk 70 feet out over the rim via the Grand Canyon Skywalk.

If you’re looking for beaches, the United States is home to some of the best in the world. From the tropical white sand beaches of Hawaii to the northern shores of Bar Harbor in Maine, this country has a seaside destination for every kind of beach bum.

America’s cities are also truly unique, each with its own culture and special flair.

New York City is a favorite of travelers around the world for its vibrant cultural scene and exciting energy. The city is home to iconic landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building as well as major cultural institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the theatres of Broadway. There are also many unusual thing to do in New York City , from lesser-known museums to unique pop-up events to late-night shows taking place after midnight in NYC and beyond.

Bonus: If you’re heading out on a solo trip to NYC , there is loads for those traveling alone, as well.

If you’re looking for a New York City trip that’s a little further off the beaten path, though, check out some of our city guides linked above!

On the west coast, San Francisco offers incredible ocean views, top sights like the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, and unique neighborhoods to explore. When in California, you also shouldn’t miss a scenic and adventurous Big Sur road trip !

Down south, you’ll definitely want to visit New Orleans to revel in the city’s incredible music, rich history, and delicious food.

Of course we’re just scratching the surface of everything America’s cities have to offer. Check out the above travel guides for more!

Q: How many days do you need for the United States?

The sheer size of the United States can make it difficult to see everything you want to see in just a few days.

For a grand tour of the country, you’ll probably want to give yourself at least 10 days. This will give you plenty of time to travel from destination to destination, especially if you’re traveling by car or bus.

In two weeks, you can drive historic Route 66, traveling through several states to get from Chicago to Los Angeles.

For any trip shorter than 10 days, you’ll probably want to stick to exploring one region of the country in-depth, like the Northeast or the West Coast.

That being said, a 10 day California road trip itinerary is pretty epic!

Q: Is the United States safe to travel?

Safety in the United States varies widely depending on where you go, particularly when you look at crime rates and the types of crime committed.

In general, the United States is safe to visit — though, of course, it is always smart to pack travel safety gear and to understand how to avoid pickpockets , especially in touristy areas.

Q: How long can a tourist stay in the United States?

Most visitors from abroad who are allowed to enter the country can stay in the United States for up to six months. Entry requirements and allowances vary depending on where you are from, so definitely check the US government website .

Q: Do I need a US travel visa?

Visa requirements vary depending on where you are from. You can visit the US government website to see if you need a visa and what type.

Q: Where is the United States?

The United States is located in North America and is bordered by Canada (north) and Mexico (south). It is also bordered by the Pacific Ocean (west) and the Atlantic Ocean (east).

Q: Are credit cards accepted in the USA?

Credit cards — particularly Visa and Mastercard — are widely accepted around the United States, though it is always wise to carry some cash for smaller establishments and in case of emergency.

Q: Can you drink the tap water in the United States?

While tap water is safe to drink in most places, it’s smart to check with the hotel in your specific destination to be safe.

Q: What is the local currency in the United States?

The local currency in the USA is the US Dollar (USD).

The United States of America is both intriguingly diverse and intimidatingly vast, making any short trip but a glimpse into the nation’s culture. While an international pride is persistently present, each state exists with its’ own personality and individual flair. There is a resounding American feel to every locale, making every stop as similar as they are different; country-road towns can feel rural to the point of isolation and big cities are as crowded as they are impressive. With surprises at every highway exit, the United States is a road tripper’s dream.

Much like its’ people, the states are diverse. As such, tourists’ are often surprised by the blatant truth and simultaneous falsity of so many American stereotypes, pleasantly discovering the different facets of ambition, beauty, and progress that create the many faces of its’ culture. It would be a description impossible to feel without direct experience, so set aside 10 years and discover it for yourself. Or ease in slowly and start with a week- like everyone else that visit, you’ll eventually find your way back.

Tell us your destination, date, and group size.

Popular new york tour guides.

New Jersey Tour Guide - Iren G.

I fell in love with New York the moment I set foot here. It's been over 30 years now. I love this city so much that I became an NYC tour guide. I enjoy showing people different faces of NYC - from the bustling city of skyscrapers to the quiet streets of out-of-the-tourists-way neighborhoods. I love telling stories of people who made New York what is it - the self-made millionaires, famous writers, daring architects, beautiful and powerful women. I can show you major landmarks as well as secret spots and cozy old bars where you can feel NYC history. I can take you to places where sounds of jazz rule the night and people swing-dance - a dance which was born in Harlem, NY, and had swept the world with its infectious joy. I'm a licensed sightseeing guide with many years of experience. I'm truly fascinated with the unique history of New York City and love to share my passion for it. I've studied History of Art at Harvard Extension School (Cambridge, Mass) and New School (NYC) and took classes on NYC Architectural History at Cooper Union (NYC).

New York Tour Guide - Dave G.

I am a New York City tour guide and have been doing bus tours for 14 years and walking tours for eight. I can easily do a standard tour on, say, Central Park, Greenwich Village, or the World Trade Center but I offer a general tour with many popular places in New York. I also have my own niche tour of "Titanic Sites in New York City". I like tour-guiding in the city because I am also a tourist and I like to feel the vicarious thrill of visitors. Being a tour-guide AND a tourist, I have traveled to Nova Scotia, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Anchorage, Cleveland, Niagara Falls, Washington DC, London, Liverpool, Belfast, Bangkok, Singapore, Philippines, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Fukuoka, Yokohama, Nara, Shizuoka, Hiroshima, Miyajima Island, Mt. Kosaya, Mt. Fuji and many other places.

New York Tour Guide - Adam G.

My name is Adam, and I’m a licensed tour guide here in New York City. With so many places to visit and an extensive subway system, New York City can feel overwhelming. There's nothing I love more than helping someone feel at ease and have a great experience exploring the amazing areas of New York. I offer private and fun full- and half-day neighborhood walking tours for families and small groups. With every tour, I aim to help people learn to navigate around town, hear great stories, capture wonderful photos, laugh a lot, and make amazing memories together. I am passionate, energetic, quick-witted, and love making people say "wow" at all the sites. I'm originally from Orlando, FL, but have lived in numerous places, including San Francisco, Atlanta, and even Sydney, Australia. Prior to becoming a guide, I worked for years helping well-respected non-profit organizations tell their stories and raise funds to support their critical work. For the past 10 years, my wife and I have called New York City home. We absolutely love living here and are always out exploring the city. It'll be an amazing day out in the city for you and your traveling companions. I can't wait to meet you.

Hawaii (Oahu) Tour Guide - Alex W.

I've been a local tour guide here on the islands for over 10 years. I specialize in nature and photography along with history. I love taking people out early in the morning to see the beautiful sunrise from the Sea Cliffs and then enjoy beautiful Day around the island. We can do all kinds of stuff from hiking to snorkeling to sightseeing. Because I enjoy showing people around the beautiful island of Oahu I started my company doing luxury convertible tours on Oahu, Hawaii 9 years ago. Having been in and out of Hawaii for 30 years and permanent for 12 years I am very knowledgeable of places to take clients based on their interest so all tours are customized and private.

Massachusetts Tour Guide - Maria S.

I'm a long-time Boston resident with a passion for Boston history and exploring the city on foot. I've lived in Boston ever since moving here for college 16 years ago and immediately falling in love with the city. I'm currently a North End resident, but in the past I have lived in over 20 different apartments across most of Boston's neighborhoods. I can take tourists off the beaten path in any part of Boston and show the area through the eyes of a local. I worked for Boston City Hall for many years, running the city's first ever Data Engineering team. My team created Boston's city-wide data warehouse, bringing analytics and automation to the city. Listen to hilarious stories about the inner workings (or lack thereof) of a city government from an (ex) city employee and an active long time resident. I started giving tours of Boston this summer after quitting my regular 9-5 job and I love it! I'm an experienced traveler who has taken many tours around the world and I would like to give that back to the tourists who visit the city I call home. I'm passionate, funny, and full of quirky historical knowledge about Boston. Ask me about any statue or cool building that you see as we pass it, chances are I know something about it! I love good food and a nice cold beer, and know where to find the best lobster roll and chowder in Boston. I have been enthusiastically eating and drinking my way through the area for over a decade and can recommend a place to try any cuisine that comes to your mind! I love giving visitors an inside scoop on the hidden gems of the city, food, history, culture, and entertainment. In my spare time I spend my time playing video games, reading, camping, and traveling. I enjoy discovering new restaurants and hidden areas of Boston, adding new material to my extensive catalog of knowledge about the city.

Boston Tour Guide - Naim B.

As a Boston tour guide, I have the added experience of being a world traveler. For many years, I frequently visited Europe, Asia, and Latin America on business. During this time, I also organized tours of the USA, Europe and Asia for my business clients. I now bring this passion, excitement and expertise to the Boston area. By exploring the globe, I was exposed to various cultures, and this unique perspective has taught me what appeals to people when visiting a new part of the country or a new part of the world. My fluency in English and Turkish, and my advanced skills in Spanish and intermediate skills in French, also help me to service a wider range of tourists and business people. I moved to Boston, Massachusetts several years ago, and I now reside in Brookline. I have three children, so I develop my tours to accommodate families with kids, couples, and individuals who want to visit and learn about the rich history and culture of Boston. As a parent, I know that Boston is a great place for higher education, and I have knowledge of the colleges and universities in the area. I customize my tours to suit the needs and preferences of my customers. Whether you want a walking tour, a driving tour, or a little of both, I can create an itinerary that showcases the best of what Boston has to offer. My one day tours are educational and entertaining, and include the history, culture, personalities, architecture and, even the shopping areas of this renowned city. At the end of the tour, you will be happy and satisfied when you realize you've seen so much in just a short time. I am here to share my knowledge of Boston and Cambridge with you, and help you to enjoy your visit so you can explore the must-see parts of this great city. I look forward to meeting you and guiding you around the city, so please send me a message if you have any questions. Thank you for reading.

Popular salt lake city tour guides.

Utah Tour Guide - Kevin E.

Hello! My name is Kevin. I was born and raised in Texas and have lived in Utah off and on for seven years. I've lived in four countries, including China, Australia, and Hungary, and experienced many other amazing places around the world. I love getting a glimpse into the culture and history of places I visit through their architecture, art, beliefs, and people. Traveling has helped me better understand the value of a great tour guide, something I’ve worked hard to become. I've been blessed (or cursed) with a knack for remembering interesting facts and details. I channel this experience and information into my tours, so that my guests get more than a basic tour. By giving tours, I'm helping people expand their understanding and appreciation of diverse ideas to help make the world a better place. Although a native Texan, my roots go deep in Utah, six generations back, to the pioneers who settled here in the mid-19th century. It is a beautiful and fascinating place. Utah should definitely be on your list of places to visit, not just for its natural wonders but also for its history. Despite being raised on stories of the pioneers, I didn't fall in love with the history, places, and stories of Utah until I lived in downtown Salt Lake City as a young college student. That's when I began to explore the city's streets and neighborhoods, which led to an appreciation of the historic architecture and stories of people who helped make Utah what it is today. And, I began to learn how my own ancestors fit in to the fabric of Utah's story. Utah has changed a lot since my ancestors moved here, growing from frontier settlements founded under the direction of a prophet to a tech hub drawing talent from around the globe to live within easy reach of outdoor recreation. I’d love to share the stories of the people and places that have impacted Utah with you on a tour of Salt Lake City or other nearby attractions. I am a member of the Utah Tour Guide Association, currently serving as president.

Your fabulous first day in New Orleans!

“ Great day in New Orleans ”

My family and I spent a full day with Arthur, starting out for a few hours on foot, then driving around to major sites outside of the French Quarter; and having lunch at an out-of-the-way place mid-day. We had a great day. Arthur's knowledge of the city and its history is encyclopedic, and is informed by both a love of the area and its culture, and real perspective about the forces that have influenced it, both past and present. We learned a ton both about how New Orleans was founded and how it evolved in its early years, and about what it's like today. Our time with Arthur gave perspective to our whole five-day visit, and he was helpful in suggesting activities for the rest of our stay. Highly recommended!

Hello Frank, thanks for the kind words above. I had a great time too and it was a pleasure to spend time with your beautiful family! With best regards, Arthur

It was my adult daughter's first time in NYC and while I know the City, I thought a tour might be a good way to orient her to the City. It was fun, educational and helped us know how to move around the City. Julia is a true New Yorker who knows, the institutions, history and culture of this great City. She is responsive to requests and had great ideas of how to share the City's delights and treasures. I highly recommend her as a tour guide.

How can I get to California?

Getting to California is relatively easy as there are a variety of options available including flying, driving, and taking public transport. You can fly into both big airports, such as LAX (Los Angeles), or small airports like Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) depending on which part of California you're traveling in. You can also drive to California if you're from a neighboring state (or want to go on an epic road trip) or you can take a bus or a train with several routes to all the popular destinations.

How do you get around Los Angeles?

Driving is the most time-efficient and popular way of getting around Los Angeles due to the city's size. While there is public transportation in the form of a bus network and the local metro, it's sometimes unreliable and can be quite time-consuming. Los Angeles is known for its crazy traffic situations, especially during peak periods of the day, so make sure you give yourself enough time to get around.

How far is Utah from California?

The time it takes to travel from California to Utah depends on how you're traveling and where in California you're traveling from. Flying is by far the quickest way to travel to Utah with a flight between LAX and SLC (Salt Lake City Airport) taking just under 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive between the two states for an epic road trip that's 12 hours long. If you were to take public transport between the two states it would be longer still but is a relatively cheap option.

Does it snow in Salt Lake City?

What's the best time to visit Denali National Park?

It's hard to pinpoint the best time to visit Denali National Park as the landscapes are beautiful all year round. When to visit Denali largely depends on what kind of vacation you're looking for. If you really want to see snow on the surrounding mountains and explore the ultimate winter wonderland then winter would be the best time to go, however, spring and summer see the flowers and vegetation bloom in an array of colors.

Tripadvisor Reviews

My husband was skeptical at first since it was a bus tour and I was worried we wouldn’t get enough time at our stops, BUT it was great! I felt like there was a perfect amount of time to look and take pictures and even, when available, to stop at the gift shops. Our guide was informative and dependable. The complimentary water was great and we appreciated the access to free ponchos since it was a heavy sprinkle off an on during our tour. The bus was great, the perfect temperature and the seats are comfortable.

We had a wonderful tour with Joey! She was knowledgeable, engaged, funny, friendly and a terrific host. We highly recommend this tour. Our only regret is that we didn’t have another day to spend in DC sightseeing!

Things to do in Boston: The ultimate guide for a Beantown getaway Back to video

But in recent years, Boston has enhanced its reputation as a city rife with cultural landmarks by adding a vibrant food scene alongside an explosion of art, revamped neighbourhoods, the glitzy Newbury Street, a road that is chock-full of boutique shops and restaurants, the picturesque Rose Kennedy Greenway, which extends from the North End to Chinatown, and a walkable harbour path that provides an endless stretch of gorgeous views and leads visitors right into the city’s Seaport District.

Whether you’ve visited once or a half-dozen times, Boston is always bubbling with new activity.

When we took a trip to the city earlier this year, the region was in the midst of a public art initiative called Winteractive, which featured 16 installations throughout its downtown core. The buzziest work by the Canadian artist Max Streicher featured a pair of giant inflatable clown heads squished between two buildings.

Another popular piece that popped up all over Instagram showed a woman on a swing, suspended from between two buildings just across the street from Boston Common.

But as the weather warms, sightseers can plan an entire vacation out of just strolling the city’s streets, taking in a game or visiting one of the city’s cultural institutions.

Of course, besides being steeped in history, Boston is a New England hub that caters to sports fans. So no matter the time of year, you’ll undoubtedly run into a Celtics, Bruins, Patriots or Red Sox fan cheering on the hometown teams.

The Bruins, who are in the midst of an opening round playoff series against the Toronto Maple Leafs, are celebrating their 100th anniversary until the end of the year.

Throughout the rest of 2024, the club will honour its history as America’s oldest professional hockey team. A statue of Bruins legend Bobby Orr greets fans on their way into the arena.

“The Boston Bruins are an important part of the fabric of the City of Boston and we are excited and proud to be the first U.S. team in the National Hockey League to reach the centennial milestone,” says Charlie Jacobs, Bruins CEO and alternate governor.

“We look forward to celebrating this historic occasion with our fans, players, alumni, associates, the City of Boston and beyond.”

Heritage Hall inside TD Garden allows fans to immerse themselves in the Bruins’ tradition by reliving the squad’s most iconic moments on the ice.

In December, the club will commemorate its first-ever game against the Montreal Maroons.

“Honouring over 1,000 Bruins alumni will be a big part of our centennial celebration,” says team president Cam Neely.

If you make it to a game, a stop at Tresca , located in the North End’s Hanover Street, should be on the checklist for hockey fans. The restaurant is co-owned by Ray Bourque, the Bruins’ longest-serving captain who played 21 seasons with the team. When we settled in for a meal, we tried their Swayman Special — goalie Jeremy Swayman’s night-before-the-game favourite, which consisted of chicken parmesan and angel hair pasta in a creamy tomato cream sauce.

And whether you’re a baseball fan or not, if you are visiting during the summer, a stop at Fenway Park should be on your itinerary. But make sure to bring your singing voice. If you’re there when the Red Sox are in town, you’ll have to belt out Sweet Caroline at least once.

If baseball isn’t your thing, the storied venue also plays host to concerts, with the Foo Fighters and Noah Kahan among artists booking shows at the outdoor stadium in 2024. A tour is a nice add on as Fenway Park guides unveil secrets from the ballpark’s 112-year history.

CULTURE VULTURES

The kids might turn their nose up if they see library on the agenda, but wandering the stacks of the Boston Public Library is a wonderful way to spend part of an afternoon. Built in 1848, art and architecture aficionados will marvel at its design and attention to detail, not to mention the floor-to-ceiling murals. And if you stop by during the summer, you can catch an outdoor concert featuring local musicians performing in the picturesque McKim Building Courtyard.

After opening popular locations in San Diego and Chicago, the WNDR Museum’s Boston outpost is another welcome spot for art lovers with its interactive and immersive displays, including an installation by famed artist Yayoi Kusama.

PUT ON YOUR WALKING SHOES

I’ve been visiting Beantown since taking a school trip there in 1991 and it is easily one of the most walkable cities in North America. Lovely green spaces dot its downtown core, but set between the waterfront and the highrises of the financial district the Rose Kennedy Greenway provides a welcome respite from all the action.

Built on top of an underground highway, the walking path runs 2.4 kilometres and connects Boston’s oldest and most vibrant neighbourhoods, including downtown Boston, the Leather District, the Wharf District, the North End and the West End.

During the summer, food trucks will pop up along the Greenway as well as outdoor beer gardens and weekly farmers’ markets.

“The park helped create a more connected Boston,” Greenway executive director Chris Cook says. “The Greenway now connects people, neighbourhoods, and communities through free and innovative programming, diverse and contemporary public art, and world-class organic horticulture.”

No matter the time of year, a stroll through Boston Common is also a must. First built in 1634, it is the oldest public park in America. On its vast grounds, guests can enjoy the many sights as they meander through its manicured gardens and monuments. Cheers fans can grab a drink right across the street at the original location of the bar that inspired the long-running TV sitcom.

A visit to the Seaport District, the original site of the Tea Party in South Boston, shows an area transformed by waterfront walking paths, shopping and museums, including the jaw-dropping Diller Scofidio + Renfro-designed Institute of Contemporary Art.

Faneuil Hall Marketplace and nearby Quincy Market are also great spots to grab a bite, people watch and shop.

WEAR STRETCHY PANTS

Foodies have long known that Boston’s exploding restaurant scene has yielded some of the best seafood and Italian eateries in America. So there are plenty of places worth seeking out.

Mario Carbone’s Contessa Ristorante played host to some of Marvel’s Avengers when Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Renner and Chris Hemsworth did brunch at the rooftop pad located in the Newbury Boston hotel.

When we dined there, we tucked into the Panettone French Toast, Squash Carpaccio, Macaroni with Wild Boar Ragu with a scoop of stracciatella gelato to finish things off.

For lowkey but upscale pre-dinner drinks, head over to The Wig Shop , a hidden cocktail lounge that disguises itself as — you guessed it — a wig shop. If you’re up for more imbibing, o enophiles will want to seek out haley.henry . Located in in the heart of Downtown Crossing, the wine bar, which is the brainchild of Haley Fortier, serves only small-batch vintages you won’t find anywhere else. They also specialize in serving up tinned fish — a ll in a cozy 680-square-foot space.

When you wander over to Seaport, Tom Schlesinger-Guidelli’s seafood spot Hook + Line has dishes that will cater to fish lovers. We recommend the clam chowder — it’s a New England staple, but particularly scrumptious here — and the baked sea scallops.

BEST VIEW IN TOWN

One of the newest local attractions invites visitors to take in the city sights from the top of the Prudential Tower. The View Boston observatory deck is located at the top of the city’s second-tallest skyscraper and shows off 360-degree views of key landmarks, including the gold-domed Massachusetts State House, Fenway Park, the Charles River, Harvard University, Boston Common and many more.

WHERE TO STAY

There are many charming neighbourhoods you can use for your homebase. During our many visits we’ve enjoyed stays at the W Hotel and The Liberty (which was once the site of the Charles Street Jail). Most recently we stayed at The Dagny in the city’s financial district. The property is close to the waterfront and walking distance to the nearby North End, Faneuil Hall Marketplace and Boston Common. Built in 1928, The Dagny is located in what once was Boston’s tallest “skyscraper” (at 14 storeys). It was given a refresh last year and boasts a restaurant ( Fin Point Oyster Bar ) and on-property cafe ( Tradesmen Coffee ).

GETTING THERE

If you are travelling from Toronto, Porter and Air Canada operate daily flights to Logan International Airport out of Billy Bishop.

On April 24, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide revealed the brand new list of One, Two, and Three Key hotels in the United States. In this first ever announcement of MICHELIN Keys in the United States, hotels in Atlanta, California, Chicago, Colorado, Florida, New York, and Washington DC were eligible for the distinction. This announcement of the most outstanding hotels in the country comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting. Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys are our most outstanding hotels. In total, the 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in the United States includes 11 Three Key hotels, 33 Two Key hotels, and 80 One Key hotels. Want to know more about the MICHELIN Key? Highlights of the United States 2024 Key Hotel List

The Aman New York — New York, New York

The Three Key Club in New York City

Expect: The highest luxury and impeccable design in Soho, Midtown, and the Financial District. Within the small club of Three Key hotels in the United States, four make their home in New York City. The Aman New York (Midtown) and Casa Cipriani (the Financial District) both make use of glamorous Beaux Arts buildings, the former a gold-crowned skyscraper in Midtown, the latter a glamorously restored ferry terminal at the very southern tip of Manhattan. Each is a refuge: an elegant, painstakingly designed escape from bustling city life. Meanwhile, two Firmdale hotels round out the list of Three Key hotels in New York City. Each is a quintessential example of the style and execution of the group’s co-owner and interior designer, Kit Kemp. Jewels on the Coast: Up and Down California

Its sheer breadth of size and variety means it’s no surprise to announce California as the state with the most Key hotels in America. Here, we’ll point you towards coastal gems like the sublime architectural achievements in Big Sur ( Post Ranch Inn and Ventana ), beachside luxuries in Santa Monica (in particular: the newly opened Georgian ), and wine country favorites like SingleThread and the Madrona . What we love: how each one of these hotels opens the door to the very best of their locations — and gives us a look at each setting through fresh eyes.

The Chicago Athletic Association — Chicago, Illinois

Across America: The Golden Age of Celebrity

Our French Keys bask in the tradition of ancient vineyards, stone chateaus, and historic palaces. In the United States, we see a different tradition. In Los Angeles, places like Chateau Marmont , the Paramour Estate , Sunset Tower , and the Charlie date back to guests and residents as illustrious as Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. These are spaces that play ingeniously with their history, even as they forge ahead with cutting-edge amenities and experiences. But it’s not just California. New York’s historic artist hotspot, the Hotel Chelsea , once hosted Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol. Today, it decorates every space with art donated by former residents. Look too to the Chicago Athletic Association , a former member’s club for 20th century business magnates and athletes — now among the city’s most impressive and vibrant hotels. 106th giro d'italia 2023 stage 21

How to Watch 2024 Giro d’Italia

With a clear favorite, two time trials, and majestic mountain passes, cycling’s most beautiful Grand Tour promises a spectacle at its finest.

How to Watch the Giro d’Italia in Canada

How to watch the giro d’italia for free, what happened last year, riders to watch.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Giro d’Italia:

Dates: Saturday, May 4 - Sunday, May 26

How to Watch the Giro d’Italia in the U.S.

If you’re a Max subscriber ($9.99/month), then you have access to the streaming platform’s B/R Sports package, which is the only legal way to stream the Giro d’Italia in the USA. For now, the package is free to all regular Max subscribers, but at some point, it will cost an additional $9.99 each month. That’s not as affordable as GCN+ used to be, but considering everything else you get with the B/R Sports package (such as MLB, NHL, NBA, NCAA Men’s March Madness, U.S. Soccer, and 24 Hours of Le Mans coverage) it’s a pretty good deal.

Max has a user-friendly app for smartphones, streaming devices, game consoles, and smart TVs. There’s also an easy-to-navigate website, which is a helpful option for streaming the race from work. (Don’t worry, we won’t tell your boss.)

You could cancel your monthly subscription at the end of the race, but remember that Max will be offering live streams of many road, mountain, track, and cyclocross races throughout the rest of the year. If that floats your boat, consider getting an annual subscription for $99.99 (or $149.99 for ad-free streaming).

If you live in Canada, you can catch the action on FloBikes ($29.99 monthly or $150 for the year). Stream or cast from your desktop, mobile, or TV. The app is now available on Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, and Apple TV. And live coverage starts at 7:45 AM EDT for most stages.

While we haven’t found legal ways to watch the Giro LIVE for free, you may be able to catch extended highlights on NBC/Peackock’s YouTube Channel a couple of hours after the events. However, where there is a will, there is a way. Just, “be careful with the ads.”

The 107th edition of the Giro d’Italia covers 3,386.7K (2,138 miles) over 21 stages, with two individual time trials, seven stages with uphill finishes, and six to eight stages expected to end with field sprints.

map

This year’s Grande Partenza takes place in Piemonte, near the French-Italian Alps, with two challenging road stages that will force the Giro’s GC contenders to be at their best right away. Stage 1, a 136K stage from Venaria Reale to Torino, features three categorized climbs–including the Superga and the Colle Maddalena–but it’s a short, punchy, uncategorized ascent just before the finish that could determine the stage winner.

Stage 2 begins in San Francesco al Campo and ends after 150K with this year’s first summit finish–on the Category 1 Santuario di Oropa, the climb on which deceased Italian legend Marco Pantani took one of his most famous stage wins in 1999. By the end of the first weekend, the GC battle will already be in full swing.

chart, histogram

The race then begins working its way south, and Stages 3, 4, and 5—which finish in Fossano, Andora, and Lucca, respectively—should be days for the Giro’s sprinters. (Although the finishes of Stages 3 and 4 feature ramps inside the final 10K that could thwart the fast men.) Stage 6 brings the race from the coast into Tuscany (it finishes in Rapolano Terme) and features 12K of the strade bianche (“white gravel roads”) that give March’s Strade Bianche road race its name. If there’s one stage during the first week that has the potential to cause a few surprises, it’s this one.

Stage 7 is the first individual time trial of the Giro, and it’s a tough one: beginning in Foligno, the 37.2K race against the clock starts with over 30K of flat roads. But there’s a nasty sting in the course’s tail: a 6.5K climb to the finish line that starts steep and then ascends more gradually to the line. Riders who don’t pace themselves on the flat part of the course could explode on the final climb. There could be large time gaps here.

chart

Starting in Spoleto, Stage 8 brings the second summit finish of the first week–on the Category 1 Prati di Tivo, a 14K climb in the Umbrian Apennines with an average gradient of 7%. With a field sprint expected in Napoli at the end of Sunday’s Stage 9 (after a 214K stage that starts in Avezzano), Stages 7 and 8 will determine which rider will wear the maglia rosa into the Giro’s first Rest Day.

chart, histogram

The second week begins in Pompeii with Stage 10, a 142K stage that features a summit finish on a new climb, the Category 1 Bocca della Selva, a 20.9K climb with a deceiving 4.6% average gradient. The first few kilometers are actually downhill, so the climb is actually harder than its statistics suggest.

chart, histogram

We expect Stage 11 (207K) to end with a field sprint in Francavilla al Mare, and Stage 12—with a jagged 190K stage through the Marche region (an area known for its muri or “walls”)—looks like the perfect day for a breakaway filled with puncheurs and riders who perform well in the spring classics. Friday’s Stage 13 is the flattest stage of this year’s race, which is probably a good thing considering the next two stages. This 179K stage from Riccione to Cento will be an active rest day for much of the peloton.

chart

And they’ll need one because the third weekend begins with Stage 14–the Giro’s second individual time trial–a generally flat, 31K course from Castiglione delle Stiviere to Desenzano del Garda. This is a day for the Giro’s time trial specialists; the pure climbers will struggle to stay within shouting distance of their more powerful colleagues.

But they’ll have a chance for revenge on Sunday, when the race heads into the Alps for Stage 15, a 220K monster stage (the longest in this year’s race) with five categorized climbs, including back-to-back 2000m summits (both Category 1 ascents) at the end of the day, with a summit finish at the Mottolino ski resort just above Livigno. This weekend should blow the Giro wide open, leaving just a handful of riders still in contention to win the race overall.

chart, histogram

The third week begins the same way the second week ends, with a 200K, high-altitude mountain stage. Stage 16 features the granddaddy of them all: the Stelvio, this year’s “Cima Coppi” as the highest summit in the race. Topping out at over 2700m, the climb comes early in the stage but will nonetheless offer a rude awakening to a peloton that’s coming out of the second Rest Day. After a long ride down into and through a valley, the day ends with the Category 1 Passo Pinei and then a summit finish on the Category 2 Monte Pana, in Santa Cristina in Val Gardena.

chart, histogram

At “just” 159K, Stage 17 is much shorter than the previous two mountain stages, but it’s jammed with five categorized climbs, including the Category 2 Passo Sella and the Category 1 Passo Rolle. The day ends with two ascents of the Category 1 Passo Brocon, which the riders climb for a second time on their way to the finish line. This will be an intense stage, and it could pose a challenge for the team defending the pink jersey to control. The riders will be either climbing or descending from start to finish and if someone’s going to stage a third-week ambush, it could come here.

The next two stages offer a break from the mountains. Stage 18 brings a 166K downhill ride from Fiera di Primiero to Padua that should end with a field sprint. Stage 19 looks like the perfect chance for a small group of opportunists–who have likely been saving themselves in the high mountains–to escape and fight for a breakaway stage win in Sappada.

The 154K stage begins in Mortegliano and climbs steadily throughout the day, culminating with three categorized climbs in the second half stage, the last of which the riders summit just 7K from the finish. After so many days of intense climbing–and with one more day in the mountains still to come–the peloton could just sit back and let the break go all the way to the finish.

chart, histogram

That sets the stage for Stage 20, the last chance for anyone hoping to steal the 2024 Giro d’Italia from whoever's been leading it. And–as the last two editions have shown us–that’s a realistic possibility. Starting in Alpago, the stage rolls along for about 85K before the first of two ascents of the Monte Grappa, an 18K climb with an average gradient of 8.1%–that’s steep . This isn’t a stage with a summit finish–the race finishes in Bassano del Grappa after a long descent from the top of the Monte Grappa down into the valley below–but even without one, the stage should still provide a dramatic conclusion to the Giro’s GC battle.

The race concludes Sunday in Rome with a 122K road stage featuring several circuits through the Eternal City. The day will begin with clinking glasses of prosecco, and end with one last chance for the sprinters to grab some glory.

You can find the elevation profiles and course maps for each 2024 Giro d’Italia stage here .

For the second year in a row, the 2023 Giro d’Italia was decided on the grand tour’s penultimate day. In 2022, Australia’s Jai Hindley (BORA-hansgrohe) took the pink jersey from Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz (INEOS Grenadiers) on Stage 20. Hindley won a mountain stage at the end of the grand tour’s first week, then hung around near the top of the General Classification before seizing his moment late in the Giro’s final mountain stage and winning the race overall.

106th giro d'italia 2023 stage 20

In 2023, Slovenia’s Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) followed the same formula, albeit without an early-stage win. After Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step)—who had won two stages and was wearing the pink jersey as the Giro’s overall leader—was forced to abandon the race after testing positive for Covid-19 on the eve of the Giro’s first Rest Day, Great Britain’s Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) took the maglia rosa . With the exception of the two days straddling the second Rest Day, Thomas held the jersey for much of the second and third weeks.

But he cracked on Stage 20, an 18.6K uphill time trial from Tarvisio to the summit of the Monte Lussari. Roglič, who entered the day just 26 seconds behind Thomas on GC, won the stage by 40 seconds, taking the pink jersey–and the 2023 Giro–by a slim margin.

Thomas held on to finish second, and Portugal’s João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) finished third. Italy’s Jonathan Milan (Bahrain-Victorious) won the Points Classification, France’s Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) won the King of the Mountains Classification, and Almeida was the Giro’s Best Young Rider.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates)

106th giro dell'emilia 2023

With most of the sport’s best grand tour riders (including Roglič) racing the Tour de France this summer, this year’s Giro has a short list of overall contenders, a list that’s headlined by one of the sport’s true superstars: Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates).

The 25-year-old has never raced the Giro, and he takes the starting line this year as the favorite to win and dominate it. Then he’s planning to head to the Tour, where he’s hoping to become the first rider since Italy’s Marco Pantani in 1998 to win the Giro and the Tour in the same season.

Geraint Thomas (INEOS-Grenadiers)

106th giro d'italia 2023 stage 20

Pogačar’s biggest challenger will likely be Geraint Thomas, who’s coming back to the Giro after last year’s disappointment. The 37-year-old (he’ll turn 38 during the race) will have a strong and experienced team supporting him–and the course suits him–but he’ll have a hard time overcoming Pogačar.

Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike)

3rd o gran camintildeo the historical route 2024 stage 4

We’ll also be keeping an eye on Belgium’s Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike), who made headlines last December when it was announced that he was breaking his contract with BORA-hansgrohe (who had recently signed Roglič away from Jumbo) to join the Dutch superteam.

The winner of the Tour de l‘Avenir in 2022, Uijtdebroeks just turned 21 and is widely considered to be a future grand tour contender. Without Belgium’s Wout van Aert, who’s skipping the Giro due to injuries he sustained in a crash at a race in Belgium a few weeks ago, Uijtdebroeks becomes the focus of the team’s Giro plans. And with a strong squad alongside him, he could finish on the podium and is the easy pick to become the Giro’s Best Young Rider.

Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale)

40th vuelta ciclista a la regioacuten de murcia quotcosta calidaquot 2024

Other GC contenders include Australia’s Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), a former fourth-place finisher at the Tour de France and Giro stage-winner; Italy’s Damiano Caruso (Bahrain-Victorious), a former Giro podium-finisher; Colombia’s Daniel Martinez (BORA-hansgrohe), a former fifth-place finisher at the Giro; Great Britain’s Hugh Carthy (EF Education-EasyPost), a two-time top-10 finisher; and France’s Romain Bardet (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), a former Tour de France podium finisher who was seventh at the Giro in 2021 but might be more of stage hunter this year.

Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek)

77th tour de romandie 2024 prologue

Other stage hunters include Italy’s Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), a three-time stage winner who was the Giro’s King of the Mountains in 2019; France’s Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step), who’s riding his first Giro; and Canada’s Michael Woods (Israel-PremierTech), who’s hoping to complete a hat-trick of grand tour stage victories with a win in Italy.

Nairo Quintana (Movistar)

4th tour colombia 2024 stage 5

One of the most controversial riders in this year’s Giro will be Colombia’s Nairo Quintana (Movistar), winner of the Giro in 2014. But the 34-year-old hasn’t raced since finishing sixth overall in the 2022 Tour de France and then having his results disqualified after testing positive for tramadol, a painkiller that’s banned by the UCI (but not banned by WADA). He’s now back in the WorldTour with the team that made him famous. His return has not been a popular one , though, and it will be interesting to see how he’s received in Italy.

The Giro also offers several stage win opportunities for field sprinters, and that–plus the fact that the Tour de France is very not sprinter-friendly–means there will be lots of them taking the start, including Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek); Belgium’s Tim Merlier (Soudal–Quick Step); Dutch sprinters Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Fabio Jakobsen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), and Australia’s Sam Welsford (BORA-Hansgrohe), Caleb Ewan (Jayco AlUla) and Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck); and Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty).

Last but not least, the Giro will see several North Americans taking the start, with Americans Larry Warbasse (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Magnus Sheffield (INEOS Grenadiers), and Will Barta (Movistar) joining Woods on the starting line, with more expected to join them as teams finalize their rosters.

The vast North American country is a popular destination for travel-loving Aussies. In addition to a growing share of business travelers, more than 350,000 Australian tourists typically visit Canada each year.

Travel insurance for Canada isn’t compulsory, but it’s highly recommended to cover for any lost or stolen baggage, the possibility of your trip getting cancelled due to an emergency, illness such as Covid-19 or bereavement, and to cover medical expenses.

The Australian Government’s Smartraveller website recommends that travellers purchase travel insurance before any overseas trip.

As in any foreign country, medical care in Canada can be expensive for visitors, with a visit to a doctor potentially setting you back by hundreds of dollars.

The Australian government won’t cover these costs, and there is no reciprocal healthcare agreement between Australia and Canada, so you aren’t covered by Australian Medicare either.

In addition, given the large geography of the country covering a variety of destinations from beaches to mountains to national parks, it is wise to hold insurance cover for a multitude of events and a variety of potential risks including natural disasters, crime or other types of emergencies.

International travel cover for Canada is generally available in the following ways:

Basic travel insurance

This type of policy is broadly focused on cover for unlimited overseas emergency medical expenses, but also includes insurance for luggage, personal liability and other essential benefits. It is usually the cheapest option available and is suitable for those traveling on a budget or for single trips.

Comprehensive travel insurance

This type of insurance typically includes higher amounts of cover for the essentials benefits such as medical expenses, luggage, personal liability, and so on. In addition, it includes cover for travel delays, rental vehicle excess, loss of passports and credit cards, hijacking, disability, accidental death, and more, depending on your policy.

Some insurers offer variations of the comprehensive policy that are suitable for multiple trips within a 12-month period.

Optional add-on policies

Given the growing number of Australians heading to Canada for cruises, road trips or to the ski slopes, some insurers have come up with add-on policies specifically tailored for a variety of adventure sports and transport options available. These include cruise packs, winter sports packs and even higher cover for rental vehicles.

Related: How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost?

Most international travel insurance policies will cover medical and hospital expenses, ambulance transportation, repatriation flights, as well as personal liability if you injure someone, or damage property while you’re in the country.

Policies will also cover, within limits, lost or delayed luggage and possessions, the costs of trip delays, interruptions or cancellations, and lost or stolen travel documents.

Comprehensive policies usually offer a broader cover to include personal accident cover in case of an injury during your trip that leads to permanent disability or death, and insurance excess payment if your rental car meets with an accident.

If you are planning to take advantage of Canada’s vast offering of adventure sports and activities, make sure these are covered by your policy—or that there is an option to add it on.

Most comprehensive policies will include popular sporting and leisure activities such as hiking, surfing, kayaking, and so on. However, more extreme activities such as skydiving, scuba diving, snow skiing or snowboarding will generally require an additional adventure sports cover at extra cost.

Most travel insurance policies to Canada will not provide cover in the following cases:

  • Illegal activities: Insurers will reject any claims arising if you knowingly act illegally or dangerously.
  • If you are under the influence: Insurance cover is specifically void if you cause a disturbance through drunken behaviour or under the influence of drugs.
  • Unattended luggage: Insurers will ignore any claim for loss if your luggage is stolen while it was left unattended in public.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions: Insurers can avoid claims for any major medical conditions, if they have not been made aware of these before taking out a policy.
  • Extreme sports: International travel insurance policies generally don’t provide automatic coverage for things like extreme sports, snowboarding or surfing. An optional add-on cover is required for these activities.

Most travel insurers in Australia offer insurance policies for travel to Canada. What policy suits you best will depend on your requirements including duration, age, and the type of cover.

It will also be determined by your specific needs, such as whether you are taking part in snow sports or other adventure activities.

An easy way to compare travel insurance policies is to use an online comparison tool, or read through our leading picks of travel insurance policies for Australians . However, always consider whether or not they include the extras you will require for your trip, and any pre-existing medical conditions you would require cover for.

Do I need travel insurance to travel to Canada?

Travel insurance for Canada isn’t mandatory, but is highly recommended.

The Australian Government urges travellers to purchase travel insurance before any overseas trip, especially for medical cover.

Medical costs can be extremely expensive in a foreign country, especially if you have to visit a doctor, dentist or hospital in an emergency, so travel insurance is very handy.

Does my visa card have travel insurance?

Not every credit card comes with travel insurance. Complimentary travel insurance is typically offered on premium credit or rewards cards that have higher annual fees. In addition, this may not cover all circumstances or emergencies. By comparison, a travel insurance policy will offer more comprehensive coverage that includes emergency medical expenses.

Akuma rages into Street Fighter 6 on May 22

Akuma rages into Street Fighter 6 on May 22

Akuma will challenge foes worthy enough to face him in Fighting Ground, World Tour, and the Battle Hub.

usa tour guide

Legend tells of a man so consumed by his pursuit of strength that his soul and body have now faded into nothingness. Though many wish he were a mere legend, Akuma will rise again in Street Fighter 6 , to challenge foes worthy enough to face him on May 22. Will you harness the power of the Satsui no Hado or succumb to it?

Akuma made his debut in Super Street Fighter II Turbo as a hidden boss and playable character. In Street Fighter 6, Akuma’s thirst for strength has taken a maddening toll. He carves figures of the hundreds of opponents he has felled and places them in the cave he resides, their silence beckoning him to fall deeper into his path of inner strife.

usa tour guide

Nakayama-san’s comments on his design: Akuma now has a more striking presence complete with gray hair. We also used Buddha statues and animals as references for his musculature in an attempt to give the character a more memorable aesthetic.

usa tour guide

Like the rest of the Year 1 characters, Akuma can become your Master in World Tour. Find him in a new area, Enma’s Hollow, located on the island of Gokuento, but beware the effects of the Satsui no Hado lest you become tormented by its hunger. After increasing your bond with Akuma, he’ll teach you his demonic moves, which you can then assign to your avatar to be used in your World Tour travels or in Avatar Battles in the Battle Hub.

As a man who has spent his life honing his skills, Akuma’s move set will be familiar to long-time fans, but the Satsui no Hado has unlocked new abilities. His fast walk speed and long-reaching normals allow him to control space and the flow of the fight.

usa tour guide

Let’s start with Akuma’s iconic moves that make him a well-rounded pursuer. His infamous fireball, Gou Hadoken is back, and can be charged up so that a “red fireball” is released instead, giving Akuma more options upon hit or block. Everyone’s favorite air fireball, Zanku Hadoken, can cover Akuma’s aggressive approach. His dragon punch, Gou Shoryuken, works as an anti-air or as a combo ender. Finally, Tatsumaki Zanku-Kyaku sees Akuma spinning forward in a series of kicks that change properties based on which kick button is pressed.

usa tour guide

Like his previous iterations, Akuma uses Ashura Senku to glide on the battlefield cloaked in shadows. Be wary of using this ability since it can be stopped mid-way by an opponent’s attacks. However, Akuma has honed this move’s vulnerabilities and can now use Oboro Throw during the approach to surprise opponents.

usa tour guide

Adamant Flame is one of Akuma’s new moves, where he performs a forward thrust engulfed in flames. This move is useful in combos and for exploiting vulnerable opponents due to its long reach. The OD version will wall splat opponents, opening up more opportunities in the corner.

Demon Raid is the Street Fighter 6 version of Hyakkishu. As Akuma leaps into the air with this move, choose to follow up with a low kick, overhead attack, dive kick, or to end the leap early. The OD version of Demon Raid unlocks two more follow-ups: an air fireball and an air tatsu.

usa tour guide

Akuma’s Level 1 Super Art is Messatsu Gohado, where he fires a highly concentrated ball of Satsui no Hado. Like most Level 1s, this move is invulnerable on start-up. Akuma has a second Level 1 called Tenma Gozanku where he unleashes the fireball from the air.

usa tour guide

Empyrean’s End is Akuma’s Level 2 Super Art where he turns the Satsui no Hado into a powerful flame and ignites it within the opponent. Using this move close to the corner will result in a wall splat where Akuma can continue his pressure or damage. Empyrean’s End is also invulnerable on start-up.

usa tour guide

Akuma’s first Level 3 Super Art is Sip of Calamity, another move that is invulnerable on start-up! He throws opponents on the ground with their face and follows up with a single devastating blow.

usa tour guide

Finally, the move you’ve all been waiting for: Shun Goku Satsu or the “Raging Demon.” This second Level 3 Super Art can only be performed when his Vitality is low enough for a Critical Art and can be used to end combos. This time, he allows you to see what happens during the one-second worth of nightmares.

Coming with this update is a new stage, Enma’s Hollow, where Akuma resides to continue his hellbent training. Year 1 Ultimate Pass owners will receive this stage on May 22.

usa tour guide

Akuma’s Outfit 2 is inspired by his debut look in Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Speaking of outfits, Rashid, A.K.I., Ed, and Akuma will have their Outfit 3s also available for purchase when Akuma releases, and will automatically be distributed to all Year 1 Ultimate Pass owners.

One last thing before we sign off. With the Akuma update comes the major balance patch we mentioned in the past where all characters will receive changes. We’ll have more to share about this in the future as we approach May 22.

Get ready to unleash your inner demon when Akuma rages in!

Generali Global Assistance is a well-established name within the travel insurance industry. Ideally, this translates to a travel insurance company with first-class service and coverage. The question for many consumers is simple: Does Generali live up to customers' expectations?

Generali Global Assistance is a reputable travel insurance provider offering multiple tiers of travel insurance coverage at reasonable rates. It offers the standard coverage for trip cancellations, emergency medical expenses, and evacuations. However, Generali falls short of the best travel insurance companies .

While Generali's coverage isn't necessarily bad by any means, it fails to distinguish itself in any way. Its plans are on the cheaper side, but aren't the cheapest. Its offers all the key coverages, but limits aren't exceptionally high. Even its additions are middling, such as its cancel for any reason coverage, which reimburses you for 60% of your nonrefundable costs when most of the best CFAR travel insurance offers 75% coverage.

It's also worth mentioning that Generali is notably strict on its pre-existing condition coverage. Pre-existing condition waivers are only offered with the most expensive Premium plan, and travelers must purchase the plan within 24 hours of their final trip deposit.

Coverage Options Available With Generali

Generali offers three tiers of travel insurance coverage: Premium, Preferred, and Standard. All three travel insurance policies cover baggage delay and loss, travel delay, interruption, cancellation, and missed connection reimbursement benefits.

Here are some of the highlights for each plan to help you better understand what coverage you may need:

The Standard Plan offers the lowest coverage with more budget-friendly premiums. It offers up to 125% reimbursement for trip interruption and up to $1,000 in travel delay reimbursement. Policyholders are limited to $250,000 per person for emergency assistance or transportation. If your baggage is lost, you'd have $1,000 to replace toiletries, clothing, and other belongings.

With the Preferred plan, you can expect 150% reimbursement for inevitable trip interruptions. It also offers travelers up to $1,000 per person for travel delay reimbursement. In addition, the emergency assistance or transportation coverage drops from $1 million to $500,000 per person, and travelers can enjoy up to $1,500 per person if baggage is lost.

Generali's Premium plan offers generous coverage for various scenarios. For example, you'll enjoy up to 175% reimbursement of your trip cost if your travels are interrupted for reasons beyond your control. Generali's Premium plan also includes up to $1,000 per person in travel delay reimbursement and up to $1 million per covered individual for emergency assistance or transportation. Finally, it has up to $2,000 per person in replacement expenses (i.e., toiletries, clothing, and other necessities while you wait for your delayed bag) if your baggage is lost.

You can compare Generali's three plans below.

Additional Coverage Options

Generali offers two add-on services alongside your base travel insurance plan:

Trip cancellation for any reason (CFAR)

Cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage reimburses you for nonrefundable expenses associated with canceling travel you've already paid for. Generali's Premium plan is eligible for CFAR coverage which pays you back for 60% of the total nonrefundable cost of your travel.

You must purchase CFAR coverage on your Premium plan within 24 hours of your initial deposit. However, eligible customers can take advantage of its full benefits, as the name suggests, for any reason. Medical problems, family emergencies, work scheduling issues, or just changing your mind are a few of the reasons Generali might pay a CFAR claim.

Preferred and Standard plans are not eligible for CFAR upgrades. New York residents are also not eligible for CFAR coverage. Generali's website estimates buyers will pay an additional 50% in travel insurance premiums for this rider while the max reimbursement is only 60% of the "penalty amount" (i.e., nonrefundable costs).

Rental car damage protection

Travelers can also purchase rental car coverage alongside their travel insurance policy. Premium plan customers already have up to $25,000 in rental car protection in their policy benefits. Preferred and Standard plan holders can purchase the same coverage amount.

Texas residents are not eligible for rental car coverage. If you're unsure about this rider, we recommend checking the limits of your auto insurance . Generally, U.S.-based auto insurance extends to rental cars. But you may want to supplement your coverage depending on what you already have.

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance Cost

The premium you pay will depend on various factors, including the age of the travelers, destination, and total trip costs. The  average cost of travel insurance  is 4% to 8% of your travel costs.

After inputting some personal information, such as your age and state of residence, along with your trip details, like travel dates, destination, and trip costs, you'll get an instant quote for the plans available for your trip. And from there, it's easy to compare each option based on your coverage needs and budget.

Now let's look at a few examples to estimate Generali's coverage costs.

As of 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following Generali travel insurance quotes:

  • Generali Standard: $82.50
  • Generali Preferred: $95.70
  • Generali Premium: $113.47

Premiums for Generali plans are between 2.75% and 3.8% of the trip's cost, well below the average cost of travel insurance. It's also relatively cheap compared to many of its competitors

Generali provides the following quotes for a 30-year-old traveler from California heading to Japan for two weeks on a $4,000 trip:

  • Generali Standard: $108.75
  • Generali Preferred: $126.15
  • Generali Premium: $145

Once again, premiums for Generali plans are between 2.7% and 3.6%, below the average cost for travel insurance.

A 65-year-old couple looking to escape New York for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following Generali quotes:

  • Generali Standard: $271.14
  • Generali Preferred: $304.68
  • Generali Premium: $459.02

Premiums for Generali plans are between 4.5% and 7.7%, which is roughly in line with the average cost for travel insurance. This is to be expected, as travel insurance is often more expensive for older travelers.

How to Purchase and Manage a Generali Policy

To buy a Generali travel insurance policy, you'll need to obtain a quote on its website. You'll need to enter your intended destination, travel duration, number of travelers, state of residence, age of traveler(s), and total cost of your trip.

You'll get quotes for all three Generali plans with general overviews of the policy benefits. You'll also find a detailed coverage description when you click "View Plan Documents." We highly encourage you to read through the terms to fully understand your policy. You can call 888-210-2134 for Generali's customer service line when purchasing a policy.

How to File a Claim with Generali Travel Insurance

To file a claim with Generali's travel insurance division, start at the eClaims portal .

You can also call its claims department at 800-541-3522 for assistance. Generali promises all insurance claim calls will be returned within one business day, and most calls are returned on the same day they are received. Many people reported quick claims processing and reimbursement when we reviewed recent customer feedback.

However, several reviews described waiting over 30 days only to discover Generali had yet to review their claims submission. As such, if you are still waiting to receive a response indicating Generali is working on your claim within a few days, we recommend checking in with customer service.

You'll need to provide supporting documentation for your claim, such as proof of travel delay from the airline or relevant claim checks for lost baggage. Your eClaims portal should give you the necessary details and update you on the ongoing status of your claim. Email the claims team for questions at [email protected] or use the eClaims chatbot for automated assistance.

Generali Customer Service and Claims Experience

Generali's reviews vary wildly depending on the site you check. On its Better Business Bureau page, Generali scores an average of 1.11 stars across 315 reviews. On Trustpilot, it scores an average of 3.5 stars across 419 reviews. Lastly, it has an average of 4.33 stars on SquareMouth across nearly 4,500 reviews.

Many five-star reviews mention how easy it was to purchase a Generali plan and how that plan gave them peace of mind while traveling even if they never had to file a claim. However, most of the mixed reviews come from people who filed claims, reporting long wait times, uncommunicative claims agents, and claim rejections with no explanation.

That said, Generali's customer service team is generally very responsive, particularly on its BBB and Trustpilot pages. Reviews on these pages generally get a response within a week.

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance vs. Nationwide Travel Insurance

Nationwide Travel Insurance is part of an extensive network of insurance products. Unlike Generali, you'll recognize any Nationwide Travel Insurance product as it's listed on the same website. In addition, Nationwide Travel Insurance offers bundling discounts, depending on what you're buying. It also sells short-term and long-term insurance plans (like auto and home).

Nationwide has been in business since 1925. Its travel insurance wing offers plans and coverage options to suit diverse travelers' needs. Customer review sites like Trustpilot had reviews complaining about long wait times and claims overlooked with Generali. Nationwide's reviews described long processing times, poor communication, and other claims-based issues.

If you're solely concerned about coverage and rates, Generali is upfront about the fact that its CFAR coverage is exceptionally costly. The company's website seems to imply the CFAR rider's cost is bloated compared to its value. But its basic plans have a few more perks compared to Nationwide Travel Insurance's single-trip plans. And while Nationwide Travel Insurance offers cruise plans and multi-trip options, Generali does not match at the time of this review.

Read our Nationwide Travel Insurance review here.

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance vs. Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz Travel Insurance is another reputable insurance company that has been in business since 1890. Allianz Travel Insurance is one of the biggest names in travel insurance, serving more than 55 million travelers across dozens of countries.

Both Generali and Allianz Travel Insurance offer comprehensive single-trip coverage options for travelers. Generali's website makes reviewing and comparing its three travel insurance plans easy. However, Allianz Travel Insurance offers annual (multi-trip) policies while Generali doesn't. Both companies list rental car protections for some travelers.

Allianz customers leaving reviews online indicate the claims process may be confusing and drawn out. Most importantly, a few reviews cautioned future travelers to come in with complete documentation. In our experience, offering more paperwork rather than less with Allianz Travel Insurance is better.

Read our Allianz Travel Insurance review here.

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance vs. InsureMyTrip

InsureMyTrip.com is an insurance broker that uses your travel details to collect insurance company bids on your behalf. You can enter your information and get multiple quotes back. As a result, Generali may be one of the insurance providers providing you with a quote through InsureMyTrip. Rates may not match what a provider would offer on its website, though. Broker websites like InsureMyTrip often charge a premium to account for third-party fees or offer discounts as a partner company knows it's competing for customers no matter what. Whatever the case, InsureMyTrip makes it easier to shop for travel insurance. However, it would not process any claims. So for some consumers, it may be more complicated to determine where to go to make a claim against their policies or get help if something goes wrong.

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance FAQs

Generali's Premium plan covers pre-existing conditions if you buy the policy within 24 hours of your final trip deposit. Its Preferred and Standard plans do not offer pre-existing condition coverage.

Generali has additional coverage options for rental car insurance for its Preferred plan and CFAR coverage for its Premium plan.

In case of emergency assistance needs while covered by Generali, policyholders should contact Generali's 24/7 hotline for immediate support. You can reach the hotline at 877-243-4135 in the U.S. and 240-330-1529 worldwide.

Generali's travel insurance coverage may include limitations or exclusions based on travel destinations, especially in relation to governmental travel advisories or high-risk areas. Policyholders should review Generali's policy documentation or contact them directly for clarification on any geographic restrictions.

Generali states it will review claims within 30 days, but customer reviews have described longer wait times.
