Wonderful places these are. I didn’t visit any of these places because I’m not much of a traveller but I admire the beauty of these places. I’m adding them to my checklist to travel.

There are some more places in kanpur to visit, like bithoor, JK temple .

I visit agra lucknow allahabad banaras ayodhya in up theses all places are good places for tourist purpose.

I am lucky to have visited most of these places. Wish to visit Jhansi and Meerut to complete this list. I have passed through both places many times, and Jhasi has been constantly luring me. Wish to visit other lesser talked-about places, too.

Wonderful place these are. I am interested to visit these places but problem is financial. If I get job in future, I will travel these place.

Naimisharanya (Lucknow)

Located at the heart of the country is the state of Uttar Pradesh which is also the most populous state in India, housing nearly 200 million people. Considered as the heritage land of the country, the cities which are located in this state are some of the most ancient cities of the world. Uttar Pradesh has a lot to offer to pilgrims with the presence of the temples such as Siddha Devi and Siddhnath, the state displays its pious edge. Agra is a major tourist destination in North India because of its many Mughal-era buildings, most notably the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, all three of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The tourist places in Agra speaks volume about the rich culture and heritage of Agra. The city is known for its historic sites, architecture, and ambiance of being in the Mughal era. Agra is also included in the Golden Triangle circle with Delhi and Jaipur and hence people travelling to the north, usually visit these three cities together. The city is not only important to the Mughal dynasty but also has its mentions in the Mahabharata, which makes it a strategic location for both Hindus and Muslims in India and in the Indo Aryan Plains. Agra is, thus, full of legacies, history, period horizons and more. Among the top tourist places in Agra is Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Taj Mahal is showpiece architecture of fine Mughal craftsmanship. It was built under the aegis of Shah Jahan as a memorial for his beloved wife Arjumand Bano Begum. Her body is enshrined in the tomb at the Taj Mahal. The designs of this structure incorporate Persian and Mughal architecture. The highlight of the structure is the tomb which is a large structure made completely of marble. Another is Agra Fort, also called the Red Fort, this structure dates back to the 16th century. It is situated near the gardens of the Taj Mahal. Made of red sandstone, Agra Fort has walls that surround for at least two kilometers and more. Inside are many splendid palaces such as Jahangir Palace and Khas Palace. It is over here that you will find the grand hall of audiences called Diwan-i-Khas. Also on the location are a couple of magnificent mosques.

Noida – the systematically planned city located not very far away from India’s capital is perhaps one of the most developed regions around Noida. Noida is actually short for New Okhla Industrial Development Authority and shot into lime light between the years, 1975 and 1977. This was time when the Emergency Period in India was essentially established and Noida pretty much has to give its existence credits to this particular phase.

Noida is considered to be one of the majorly developed cities due to several reasons. One of the chief reasons being – the city contributes the highest per capita income in the whole of National Capital Region. Affectionately termed as the City of Nawabs, Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh, is one of the major cultural hubs of the country. Its rich heritage, made magnificent by the beauty of Islamic architecture attracts tourists from across the world. The city rose to prominence under the rulers of the Awadhi Nawabs, who were well-known patrons of food, dance, and music. Lucknow is home to some of the most renowned Mughal architectural marvels dating back to the 17th and the 18th century, including the Bada Imambara, Chattar Manzil, and Rumi Darwaza, among others. Uttar Pradesh is indeed special in so many ways. It’s here that once Lord Rama, Lord Krishna and Lord Buddha walked among humans, making it the cradle of Indian mythology and civilization. Uttar Pradesh is such a vast state that many times, in the due course of visiting the world-famous Taj Mahal, the holy Kushinagar, bustling and vibrant Varanasi or the city of Tehzeeb Lucknow one may not realise that all these diverse places are a part of this single north Indian state. One of the most important places to visit in Uttar Pradesh and famous across the globe for being the home of the Taj Mahal, Agra is located on the banks of River Yamuna. Home to two more UNESCO World Heritage Sites – Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, Agra is indeed a sneak peek into the architectural history and legacy of the Mughal empire. The city forms part of the popular Golden Triangle Circuit for tourists along with Delhi and Jaipur and also a part of the Uttar Pradesh Heritage Arc including Varanasi and Lucknow. Agra is a heaven for history fanatics, architecture buffs and foodies, all alike. It’s famous for its Petha and also well-known for its marble artefacts. Agra is therefore among the must-visit destinations in Uttar Pradesh for anyone living in or visiting India.

2. Fatehpur Sikri

A city made of red sandstone, Fatehpur Sikri was founded in 1571 by Mughal Emperor Akbar. It’s located at a distance of 40 km. from Agra and is rightly known as the pride of the Mughal Empire. Fatehpur Sikri is essentially a fortified city and had been the capital of the Empire for fifteen years. A unique blend of Indo-Islamic architectural excellence and religious beliefs adorns Fatehpur Sikri. Today, a UNESCO world heritage site, it is home to the three palaces for each of Emperor Akbar’s favourite wives - one a Hindu (Jodha Bai), one a Muslim and one a Christian; Jama Masjid - a stunning mosque which is still in use today; Buland Darwaza; and tomb of Salim Chisti among many other famous monuments. Fatehpur Sikri looks magical and splendid, especially during the sunset. This one is certainly one of the best places to visit in Uttar Pradesh.

3. Varanasi

Varanasi, also known as Kashi and Benaras and considered to be the world’s oldest living city is one of the most famous tourist places in Uttar Pradesh. Being one of Hinduism’s seven holy cities, Varanasi is indeed the spiritual capital of India. While you would find temples at almost every turn in the city, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, which is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, is the most visited and the oldest of all. Varanasi is considered an auspicious place to die, as it is believed to grant moksha or liberation from the cycle of life and death. About 80 ghats along the banks of the Holy Ganges form the heart and soul of the city. The ceremony of immense grandeur and spiritual enlightenment, the Ganga Aarti is a must-experience when in Varanasi. Also, the hot chaat and cool lassi would be the perfect feast for your taste-buds.

Being the birthplace of Lord Krishna makes Mathura one of Hinduism’s seven sacred cities and therefore attracts a horde of pilgrims from all over the world, making it one of the most visited pilgrims and tourist places in Uttar Pradesh. Similar to the Ganga Aarti in Varanasi, the Yamuna Aarti is one of the highlights of Mathura. The town is flooded with tourists and pilgrims during the two main festivals – Janmashtami and Holi. Shri Krishna Janmabhumi is the most famous tourist attraction in Mathura, as this place is believed to be the exact place where Lord Krishna was born, and the prison where he was born is now on display for tourists to see. Other two most important temples in town are the Dwarkadheesh Temple and the Gita Mandir. Mathura also has a delicious history of street food. Some must-try local snacks are kachodis, aloo-puri, chaat, jalebis and gulab-jamuns.

5. Vrindavan

Located only 10 km. away from each other, Mathura and Vrindavan are often considered twin cities. One of the oldest cities on the banks of Yamuna, Vrindavan is considered to be one of the most important places of pilgrimage for the devotees of Lord Krishna. Considered to be his childhood abode, the city of Vrindavan, which is located along the waters of river Yamuna hosts hundreds of Lord Krishna and Radha temples scattered throughout. The most famous of them are Banke Bihari temple and the world-famous ISKCON temple. The name of the city has been derived from Vrinda (meaning basil) and Van (meaning grove) which perhaps refer to the two small groves at Nidhivan and Seva Kunj. Since Vrindavan is considered to be a sacred place, a large number of people come here to renounce their worldly life.

The capital and the largest city of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow welcomes you with a heart-warming note of ‘Muskuraiyein, kyunki aap Lucknow mein hai’ (Smile, for you, are in Lucknow). Situated on the banks of river Gomti, this city of Nawabs and Kebabs is renowned for its architecture, history, literature and culture. The people of Lucknow are known for their courtly manners and endearing ‘Pehle aap’ (you first) culture, which always leaves behind a smile on the faces of the visitors. Rumi Darwaza, the Mughal Gateway built in the centre of the capital divides the city into its old and new part. 7. Allahabad

Officially known as Prayagraj, Allahabad is famous for Triveni Sangam or the meeting points of three rivers - Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati and therefore one of the important tourist spots to visit in Uttar Pradesh. Built on the site of the ancient town of Prayag, Allahabad has, since time immemorial, held the largest Hindu gathering on the banks of the Sangam - the Maha Kumbh Mela, which is held here every twelve years and is attended by millions of pilgrims from across the globe. Prayag or Prayagraj had been the ancient name of the city, however, after the Mughal invasion, Emperor Akbar, impressed by the location named the city ‘Ilahabas which meant ‘Abode of God’. Emperor Shah Jahan, his grandson, renamed the city to Allahabad. Other popular places to visit in Allahabad include the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Allahabad Fort; Anand Bhavan – the ancestral home of the Nehrus; All Saints Cathedral;  Chandra Shekhar Azad Park; and Allahabad Museum among others.

Yet another holy tourist place in Uttar Pradesh, Sarnath is a quiet and spiritual city of historical marvel with numerous Buddhist stupas, museums, excavated ancient sites and beautiful temples… all adorned with a mystical and serene setting. One of the four holiest places to the Buddhists, Sarnath is just 10 km. from Varanasi and is often flocked with Buddhist, Jain and Hindu devotees, alike. It’s the place where Lord Buddha preached his first sermon. The attractions that contribute to the spiritual significance of Sarnath are Ashoka’s Pillar and Dharma Stupa built by Emperor Ashoka among many others. All of this makes Sarnath one of the must-visit places to see and experience in Uttar Pradesh.

Yet another very famous place in Uttar Pradesh, Ayodhya has been in limelight since many years now and very recently for the grand Bhoomi Poojan of the Ram Mandir that is to constructed here. The birthplace of Lord Rama, Ayodhya is located on the banks of river Sarayu in Uttar Pradesh and is one of the seven sacred cities for Hindus. Ayodhya is also the birthplace of four of Jainism’s 24 Tithankaras thus making it one of the most important tourist destinations in Uttar Pradesh for Jains too. The religious town is adorned with many serene ghats by the banks of the holy Sarayu river. Despite the controversy, Ayodhya has so much colour and spirituality to see and experience for its tourists and continues to be a significant pilgrim centre.

Popular as a place where Jhansi Ki Rani – Rani Laxmibai lived and reigned, Jhansi is located on the banks of the Betwa and Pahunch rivers, at the very south in the Bundelkhand region. Jhansi gets its name from the Jhansi Fort built by Raja Bir Singh Deo and was named so since the rulers could only see a shadow atop a distant hill when gazing at the fort. Jhansi was originally known as Balwantnagar, which was a walled city built around a fort. The interesting and glorious history of the city along with the variety of monuments and other essential landmarks make Jhansi one of the significant tourist destinations in Uttar Pradesh.

11. Kushinagar

One of the four holy sites of Buddhism and one of the most famous tourist places in Uttar Pradesh, Kushinagar is located in the north-eastern region of the state, near Gorakhpur. Kushinagar is named after ‘Kush’ grass, due to its plentifulness in the region. The religious town is believed to be the place where Lord Gautam Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana. Kushinagar is therefore rightly an international tourist destination, especially among the followers of Buddhism. Kushinagar’s one main road is lined with temples run by Buddhist nations, where you can stay, contemplate or simply chat with the monks. Through its principal ruins, Kushinagar offers a view of fascinating ancient architectural expertise through the structures of strategically built monasteries and life-like sculptures of deities. Every year, on the occasion of Buddha Purnima, a grand fair is organised here which is thronged by the locals and pilgrims from far and wide.

Uttar Pradesh - The Land of Diverse Religious & Spiritual Places

Uttar Pradesh is abundant with religious places and has important pilgrimage sites for religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Islam, and Christianity. The state is therefore a popular point of interest for the devotees of these religions and attracts a number of them each year.

Sanctified by the confluence of the sacred most rivers of India - Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati, Uttar Pradesh is a pilgrimage destination that is important among the followers of Hinduism.

A prominent Hindu temple among the many that Uttar Pradesh has, is the Kashi Vishwanath Temple at Varanasi. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas among the country and is dedicated to the Hindu God, Shiva who is worshiped in the form of Vishwanath, the ruler of the universe. The Dashashwamedh Ghat is located near the Temple and becomes crowded with people in the evening, locals and tourists alike who gather to attend the famed Ganga Aarti.

The Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple at Mathura is another important temple of the state. It is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna and is a revered place among his followers along with the nearby places of religious significance such as Govardhan, Nandgaon, and Vrindavan. The temple becomes especially lively during the occasion of Janmashtami to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna.

The district of Gorakhpur owes its name to the revered temple of Gorakhnath, an ascetic saint who used to travel all over India and write many texts that form the basis of foundational principles and values of the Nath community today. The temple now contains a Samadhi chamber, Gorakhnath's footprints, and his Gaddi or seat where he used to sit and is a prominent temple of Uttar Pradesh.

The Tulsi Manas Temple in the city of Varanasi is dedicated to Lord Rama and built in honor of the Hindu poet and philosopher, Tulsidas. The temple is a marble structure with verses of Tulsidas' Ramcharitmanas written on its walls. The stories from the epic are also depicted throughout the temple through an ensemble of pictures, paintings and sculptures.

Uttar Pradesh is an important destination for followers of Buddhism as well. Among the Buddhist circuit falls Sarnath, being the place where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon after he attained enlightenment. Sarnath is also important due to the presence of The Ashoka Pillar and the Dhamek Stupa, built centuries ago to honor Lord Buddha. Other prominent Buddhist sites in Uttar Pradesh include Kaushambi, Sankisa, Shravasti, and Kushinagar.

The state also houses places of religious importance for the Jains such as the Jain Shwetambar Temple at Ayodhya, which is dedicated to the first Tirthankar of the Digambar Jain sect, Rishabdev and has a 31 feet tall marble statue of him.

Sarnath is significant for followers of Jainism too for its Digambar Jain Temple, also called the Shreyansnath Jain Temple, built in honor of the 11th Jain Tirthankara Shreyansnath.

In the Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh there is the Teerthdham Mangalayatan, a Jain pilgrimage complex which houses 5 Jain temples and also functions as a research center for socio-religious purposes.

Another prominent site for the followers of Jainism is Deogarh, in the district of Lalitpur. Along the banks of the Betwa River lie the 31 Jain Temples and Manastambhas, dating up to the 17th century. The panels of these structures showcase images of Tirthankaras and scenes from mythology.

When it comes to Muslim pilgrimage sites in Uttar Pradesh, Jama Masjid comes to mind. The Jama Masjid at Fatehpur Sikri was built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in the 16th century and has the tomb of Sheikh Salim Chisti, a Sufi Saint. The structure is considered to be one of the greatest architectural achievements of Akbar.

Another mosque built by the Mughals is another popular tourist attraction in Uttar Pradesh. The Jama Masjid at Agra is a splendid structure built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his daughter Jahanara Begum and is made of red sandstone and white marbles.

Dewa Sharif at Lucknow's Barabanki district is another Muslim pilgrimage site. It is a tomb erected in memory of the Sufi Saint, Syed Haji Waris Ali Shah. An annual festival is held for 10 days at the site known as the Dewa Mela and includes musical performances, Mushairas, and Kavi Sammelans.

Apart from Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Muslim religious places, Uttar Pradesh also has Christian pilgrimage sites such as the St. John's Church at Meerut. It is one of the most popular churches of the state and is the oldest church in North India, made in 1819 by the East India Company during British rule, glimpses of which can be seen in their architecture.

Another popular church in Uttar Pradesh is the St. George's Cathedral at Agra. It is yet another church built by the Britishers and was constructed in 1828. This Anglican church was made for the British population who resided in this part of the country. The cathedral has commemorations remembering the British soldiers who died during battle while in India.

These nine heritage sites in UP are touted to become luxury hotels

Uttar Pradesh is set to welcome nine new five-star hotels equipped with premium facilities, as announced by a government spokesperson. These high-end hotels will be established within nine palaces and forts across the state, transforming them into luxurious accommodations for tourists.

The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department is poised to convert heritage properties such as Chattar Manzil in Lucknow, Barua Sagar Fort in Jhansi, Chunar Fort in Mirzapur, Kothi Darshan Vilas, Kothi Gulistan-e-Iram and Kothi Roshan in Lucknow, Barsana Water Palace in Mathura, Shukla Talab in Kanpur and Tikait Rai Baradari in Bithoor into heritage hotels.

This initiative will offer tourists the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich history of Uttar Pradesh by staying at these historic sites.

This initiative has been introduced to enhance tourism in the state, aiming to transform not just old palaces and forts but also havelis and heritage buildings into one-of-a-kind heritage hotels. Mukesh Kumar Meshram, the principal secretary of the Department of Tourism and Culture in Uttar Pradesh, stated that due to significant growth in domestic and inbound tourism in recent times, efforts are underway to develop infrastructure and facilities catering to tourists from all economic segments seeking unique experiential tourism.

In line with the new tourism policy, dialogues have been initiated with prominent hotel groups to revitalise these palaces and havelis through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This move aims to offer luxurious and unparalleled experiences while boosting the tourism sector and providing employment opportunities for the youth. Additionally, it is expected to stimulate rural tourism and the local economy.

Furthermore, it will contribute to the economic transformation of rural tourism, culture and local areas. The state’s tourism policy requires a minimum investment ranging from Rs 30 crores to Rs 100 crores for transforming heritage properties into hotels. Based on the level of investment, heritage buildings will be categorised and investors will be offered various incentives and concessions.
