Calling all Vengaboys fans. The Vengabus is coming to Auckland.

If you like to party get ready because the Vengaboys have announced their 25th anniversary tour and it includes an exciting show in New Zealand’s biggest city.

The pop group – known for their iconic hits such as We Like To Party and Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!! – will take the Auckland Town Hall stage on February 4 with tickets going on sale next week.

Alongside the 90s icons, the Dutch dance-pop band will be joined by fellow 90s pop royalty, Whigfield, N-Trance, Reel 2 Real feat.The Mad Stuntman and resident DJ Nick Skitz for the ultimate throwback pop experience.

Including the original members, Cowboy Donny, Captain Kim, PartyGirl D’Nice and SailorBoy Robin, the group promise to deliver a “blow the roof off electrifying show” as they celebrate their 25th anniversary.

Since forming in 1997, the Dutch Eurodance music group have hit massive career achievements including more than 700 million YouTube views , 1.5 million subscribers and more than 4.3 million Spotify monthly listeners, and show no signs of slowing down.

Meanwhile, supporting act Whigfield – a Danish artist and producer – will perform the 2020 hit Suga, alongside other hit singles such as Sexy Eyes and Think of You.

The group’s resident DJ Nick Skitz will also join the show. As an Australian pioneer of dance music, Skitz has been filling dance floors for years and will create a school disco vibe that you’ll wish never ends.

Dutch Eurodance idols the Vengaboys are set to return to Aotearoa this summer, announcing their 25 th Anniversary Tour of Australia and New Zealand!

This February, presented by Frontier Touring , Arena Touring , and So Pop, the Vengabus is coming with special guests, including: Whigfield, Alice DJ, N-Trance, Reel 2 Real feat. The Mad Stuntman and resident DJ Nick Skitz – the ultimate throwback pop experience! 

Frontier Members  pre-sale kicks off  Monday 31 October 12noon local time  before the General Public on sale on  Wednesday 2 November 12noon local time.

The tour kicks off in New Zealand at Auckland Town Hall on Saturday, 4 February, before  Vengaboys and friends head to Australia, where they will be playing three Queensland shows at Gilligan’s, Cairns on Wednesday, 8 February, Fortitude Music Hall, Brisbane on Thursday 9 February before Night Quarter, Sunshine Coast on Saturday 11 February.

The Vengabus then heads south to the Forum, Melbourne, on Sunday, 12 February, back north for Big Top, Sydney, on Thursday, 16 February, and across to Hindley Street Music Hall, Adelaide, on Saturday, 18 February, before a final stop on the west coast at Metro City, Perth on Sunday 19 February.

The Venga-Bus is coming.

Dutch dance act the Vengaboys are to play Auckland's Town Hall for a one-off date on Saturday, February 4, 2023.

The group - whose hits include 'We Like To Party', 'Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom' and 'We're Going to Ibiza' - will be joined by Whigfield, N-Trance, Reel 2 Real featuring The Mad Stuntman and resident DJ Nick Skitz.

The Vengaboys have over 700 million YouTube views, 1.5 million subscribers and more than 4.3 million monthly listeners on Spotify. 

Whigfield is famous for the dance song 'Saturday Night', and Reel 2 Real featuring The Mad Stuntman's biggest hit is 'I Like to Move It', which also became popular in the Madagascar animated movies.

If you like to party like we like to party, then we’ve got something to tell ya and that’s boom, boom, boom, boom , the Vengabus is coming. Happiness is just around the corner because in February 2023, we’ll spend the night together with everybody jumping to the absolute best of the late 90s and early 2000s euro-dance-pop hits.

Whoah! We’re gonna have a party across the country thanks to the band’s 25 th Anniversary . Comprised of members Cowboy Donny, Captain Kim, PartyGirl D’Nice and SailorBoy Robin—they just don’t name ’em like they used to—you’re going to need to get ready, to get, get, get down to the Venga-Vengabeat.

You might think you can live without it but just come along, take my hand, forget your problems, and move your body because the wheels of steel are turning and traffic lights are burning—it’s an intercity disco that’s hot hot hot.

But seriously, the Vengaboys are coming to Australia and New Zealand and the Vengabus is going to be making a stop in Auckland before going up and down the east coast of Australia visiting Cairns, Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, Melbourne and Sydney . Hey now, Adelaide and Perth are also on the tour because we all want to go back to 1999—it was easy back then, feeling cool in my youth.

Joining the Vengaboys will be Whigfield , who’ll be bringing “Sexy Eyes” and “Saturday Night” to the stage alongside N-Trance , who have definitely been “Stayin’ Alive” and we’re hoping will “Set You Free”, as well as, Reel 2 Real and The Mad Stuntman whose track “I Like To Move It” will get all the ring-tailed lemurs dancing.

And to help move ya body, DJ Nick Skitz of Skitz Mix notoriety (now up to volume 59—can you believe it?) will be on the ones and twos bringing megamix after megamix after megamix. In Australia, Alice DJ will hit the stage as well as they’re not “Better Off Alone”.

Rotterdam Eurodance outfit the Vengaboys may not be able to boast lyrical ingenious or masterful production values yet they do have a smattering of hits that everybody in the western world will know. You also have to appreciate that with the number of artists and Eurovision contestants who create one infectious summer hit and then fade into obscurity, the Vengaboys have managed to sustain a career that is almost two decades old.

The live show is camp, kitsch and above all incredibly fun. The band never takes themselves too seriously and this vibe is passed on to their crowd as they are urged to lose all inhibitions and dance along to the likes of 'Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom' and 'We're Going to Ibiza'. It does all get a little silly at times and they seem perpetually trapped in the 90s but for an evening you are transported back to the free spirited decade of colour and it is a pretty nice trip with an equally nostalgic soundtrack.

“We like to party, we like, we like to party, we like to party, we like, we like to party,” the modulating radio sounding voice is repeated as this euro pop outfit take to the stage, urging the audience to clap to the beat that is building in a large crescendo to this up tempo chart topping hit. As the beat drops, the whole room is jumping, glow sticks around every wrist, ultra violet paint upon every face as everybody sings along.

These Dutch, Eurodance giants, The Vengaboys deliver their entire top ten singles catalogue throughout this half an hour set, with every single person dancing throughout, singing their favourite childhood songs from around the year 2000 mark. The nostalgic four-piece had a huge amount of success selling an estimated 25 million records worldwide and were even the best selling dance group of the year in 2001.

“Boom Boom Boom Boom” is definitely a highlight of this set as every single audience member raises his or her fist to the sky for each “Boom”. Without a doubt, every one was partying like it was 1999. The loudest applause award goes to their hit single “We’re Going to Ibiza”, which is a reworking of Typically Tropical’s 1975 number one hit, “Barbados” which closed the set in spectacular fashion, of course by this point, there was a silly amount of ultra violet paint on the face of the entire audience. It was definitely a nostalgic experience for anyone who witnessed the year 2000.

Few acts can lay claim to the title of novelty hit kings with quite as much conviction as Vengaboys can, certainly in terms of the nineties and early noughties; it was during that period that they troubled the business end of the charts on a consistent basis, with the likes of ‘Boom Boom Boom Boom’, ‘We’re Going to Ibiza’ and ‘We Like to Party! (The Vengabus)’ making a serious impression on the British public, leading to the former two hitting the top of the UK charts and that third track making it to a respectable number three. As infectious as the Dutch group’s sense of fun was, though, and as successful as it made them, bringing them a slew of worldwide platinum certifications, it also clearly had a shelf life, which perhaps suggests why it was that they’ve never recaptured that level of success since. After reforming in 2007, though, they continue to record and tour, collaborating with celebrity blogger Perez Hilton in 2010 and routing jaunts through some of their most successful territories, including Australia and New Zealand. They’ll support David Hasselhoff at a huge arena date in Sweden later this year, and further UK dates are likely to be scheduled sooner than later; as a blast of pop nostalgia goes, you could do far worse.

Vengaboys to perform in NZ next year

Dutch Eurodance stars, the Vengaboys will tour New Zealand in early 2023.

The one-off show will take place at the Auckland Town Hall on February 4. The group – whose hits include We Like To Party, Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom and We’re Going to Ibiza will be joined by Whigfield, N-Trance, Reel 2 Real featuring The Mad Stuntman and resident DJ Nick Skitz.

About Vengaboys

In a time when electronic music was surging, the Vengaboys were Eurodance hits throughout the world. Originally from Rotterdam, the Dutch Eurodance group enjoyed massive success in the 1990s with catchy, high BPM tunes such as "Boom Boom Boom", "We Like To Party," and other cheesy radio-friendly songs. Vengaboys were composed of producers Danski and Delmundo and had the dual-gender vocal support. That sound mixture made Vengaboys into a commercially successful group. They weren't a propper band; they were a group of characters who knew how to create party-ready tunes in the late 90s. In 2001, the group was crowned the Best-Selling Dance Group of the year. The band called it quits for a while in 2002, and by 2006 they were back on the touring route. While their new music wasn't very radio-friendly, their most beloved hits still gathered an abundance of crowds.

Five of the Best: Vengaboys

From the late 1990s and into the early 2000s, the vengaboys were one of the hottest musical acts on the planet. the dutch eurodance group was known for its high-energy, heavy bass dance/pop tracks and boy did new zealand soak them up.

The Vengaboys had five consecutive top 10 hits in New Zealand, including three tracks that topped the local charts. That is more than the group enjoyed in their native Netherlands, which demonstrates just how popular the Vengaboys were in NZ.

To celebrate the impending arrival of the Vengaboys, we have selected the group as our focus for this edition of Five of the Best. We hope you enjoy this step down memory lane with one of the hottest dance/pop groups of the late ‘90s!

We’re Going to Ibiza

Amazingly, We’re Going to Ibiza was the sixth single off the hugely successful Vengaboys record, The Party Album. The song is famous for its mispronunciation of Ibiza, but the way it is sung in We’re Going to Ibiza (with an emphasis on the ‘Z’ sound) is very common in the Netherlands. The track is based on the 1975 hit Barbados, but the lyrics are modified. The song was hugely popular throughout the world, making the top 10 in 14 countries, including number 1 in the UK, Scotland, Poland and the Netherlands. The song was number 6 on the NZ charts, which was modest given the chart-topping success the Vengaboys enjoyed there.

We Like To Party! (The Vengabus)

While Up & Down was the first track to chart locally (it reached number 27 in NZ), it was the 1998 hit, We Like to Party (The Vengabus) that really cemented the Vengaboys as a major player in the 1990s scene. The song reached number 9 on the charts in New Zealand and was a top 10 hit in at least 10 more countries. The track is very high-tempo and was a guaranteed dance floor filler in its day.

Kiss (When the Sun Don’t Shine)

Kiss (When the Sun Don’t Shine) was a number 1 hit on the charts in New Zealand despite not taking the top spot in any other country’s charts (it was a top 10 hit in many other countries). The Vengaboys enjoyed a great deal of success and popularity in NZ and this is a perfect example of how the locals embraced the European group and its music. Kiss was released in 1999 and was the first single off The Platinum Album. The film clip for Kiss was shot in Japan and features all four members – Kim, Denise, Robin and Donny – in trademark over-the-top outfits such as cowboy hats and sailor uniform. Check it out.

Shalala lala

The turn of the millennium did nothing to abate New Zealand’s love for the Vengaboys. In 2000, the group released Shalala Lala, which was a cover of a 1973 hit released by Danish glam rockers Walkers. The cover version mixes the original track with the classic synth and drum beats we had all come to expect from Vengaboys songs. The song is slower and closer to a ballad than any of the other Vengaboys tracks in our Five of the Best, but the people of New Zealand embraced the change of tempo, seeing this track hit number 1 on the local charts. The film clip is a lot of fun – so fun in fact, it was banned by the BBC. The dance off between the male members of the Vengaboys is a highlight; have a look below.

Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!

The 1998 track, Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom was the biggest worldwide hit for the Vengaboys with the upbeat dance track hitting the top of the charts in New Zealand, Canada, the Netherlands, Norway, Scotland, Sweden and the UK. The first verse of the track interpolates ABBA’s Lay All Your Love on Me, giving Benny and Bjorn a writing credit for Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom. There is no doubt Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom is the quintessential Vengaboys hit; the track is full of the synth beats that are now the signature of the Vengaboys.
