The Voyage of the Dawn Treader – Chapter Summaries

Here we have a chapter by chapter look at  The Voyage of the Dawn Treader . It’s doesn’t cover everything from the book, but does capture the major plot points.

  • The Picture in the Bedroom Edmund and Lucy have been stuck with spending the Holidays with their dreadful cousin Eustace Clarence Scrubb. One afternoon, Edmund and Lucy were talking about Narnia, when Eustace over heard them and came in to tease them. It was during this time that a very peculiar thing happened.
  • On Board the Dawn Treader While Eustace was complaining every chance he got. Edmund and Lucy were given a tour of the Dawn Treader. They had only been on the ship for a few days, when Eustace had tried to swing Reepicheep around by his tail, and ended up on the bad side of Reepicheep’s sword.
  • The Lone Islands After walking for a short time on Falimath, Caspian met one of the Seven Lords he was searching for. After boarding the Dawn Treader again, Caspian had some signals run up, for the rest of his fleet to assemble round the point, at Bernstead.
  • What Caspian Did There After marching on the Castle of the Governor, and relieving him of his position, Caspian made the Lord Bern, Duke of the Lone Isles. Next they had the slave trade closed, and Caspian went and rescued his friends.
  • The Storm and What Came of It Three weeks after landing at Narrowhaven, the Dawn Treader, once again, set sail. Lucy really enjoyed the next few days relaxing in the sun playing chess with Reepicheep. It was when the ship had started running dangerously low on fresh water, that they found land for the first time in three weeks. This was when Eustace disappeared.
  • The Adventures of Eustace While the others were all feasting on game they had found on the island, Eustace had found himself in a valley with no idea where he was. The next morning after waking, Eustace found that a very strange change had come over him in the night, and that he didn’t like it too much. After he had gotten used to the change, Eustace found his way back to the others.
  • How the Adventure Ended After helping to restock, and re-mast the ship, Eustace was thinking he may have to be left behind for the rest of the voyage, that was until he had a night time visitor. The day on which they left, Caspian named the Island, Dragon Isle. Then he threw Lord Octesians bracelet to where no one could reach it.
  • Two Narrow Escapes After leaving Dragon Isle, the ship headed for an uninhabited Island they had seen. After exploring it, it was named Burnt Isle. On the next Island, they found the fate of one of the Lords they were searching for, and could not leave the Island fast enough.
  • The Island of the Voices It was on the last day they thought they could continue eastward, that the Dawn Treader came into sight of land. But it wasn’t until Lucy had stopped to remove a stone from her shoe, that they found out they had been cut off from their ship by invisible enemies.
  • The Magician’s Book After feasting and sleeping, Lucy entered the house to complete the task she had been set. When Lucy finally made it to the Last door on the left, after a few distractions. She found, inside, what she was looking for, and began.
  • The Dufflepuds Made Happy After Aslan introduced Lucy to the Magician, she finally got to see what it was, she had made visible. That night, everyone feasted with the magician, and he gave them a very useful gift. The next day, after restocking, the Dawn Treader continued on her voyage.
  • The Dark Island After almost two weeks of sailing, the crew thought they saw land so changed direction towards it. That was when they realized it wasn’t land at all, it was just a complete darkness. Inside was the land where dreams came true.
  • The Three Sleepers They sailed for days with the wind never dying, but always growing softer, until they spotted land. This was the Island some called the Worlds end. Here Caspian, Edmund, Lucy and Eustace feasted at Aslan’s Table, and found three of the lords they were searching for.
  • The Beginning of the End of the World After meeting Ramandu, he explained that to break the enchantment, they must travel as far east as possible, and leave one of their company there. After deciding who would travel with them to the end of their voyage, everyone sat, and feasted at Aslan’s Table.
  • The Wonders of the Last Sea While Drinian was telling Lucy not to mention the Sea People to anyone, Reepicheep and jumped over board thinking the Kng of the Sea People had challenged him. That was when they discovered the water was sweet. Almost as if you were drinking light.
  • The Very End of the World Then there came a time when Lucy, Edmund, Eustace, and Reepicheep had to leave the ship and go on alone in the boat. After days in the boat, Reepicheep had to go on by himself in his Coracle. The children then left the boat as well and waded until they came to land. Here they met Aslan who, once again, sent them home. For this story has now come to an end. But let it be noted, Eustace was a far nicer boy following is adventures in Narnia.

The Voyage of the "Dawn Treader" - Chapter 11, The Dufflepuds Made Happy Summary & Analysis

The Voyage of the "Dawn Treader" by C. S. Lewis

Chapter 11, The Dufflepuds Made Happy Summary

Lucy follows Aslan out into the hallway and is introduced to the magician. The Magician has been alive all this time, not dead as the invisible creatures suggested, except he too was made invisible. Aslan asks if the Magician, Coriakin, is still happy with his charges and Coriakin says he is. Aslan then leaves. Coriakin takes Lucy to another room and provides her a meal of all her favorite foods. Lucy and the Magician talk like old friends and the Magician explains to Lucy how the creatures were turned invisible in the first place. Coriakin says that the creatures are dumb little things that refused to listen to him when he attempted to make their work easier.

Coriakin takes Lucy to see the creatures where they are napping out on the lawn. At first Lucy...

Edmund and Lucy Pevensie are staying with their cousin, Eustace Scrubb at his home, when they are all three suddenly transported to Narnia through a painting of a ship at sea. They land in the Narnian sea next to the boat in the painting, the Dawn Treader. The captain of the ship is determined to be King Caspian X, previously Prince Caspian . He is on a quest to discover the seven lost lords of Narnia. They also meet Reepcheep, a talking mouse, who longs to see Aslan 's country.

They travel to the Lon Islands, where they meet the first lord, Lord Bern, who has participated in the slave trade in the land after being banished by Miraz. Caspian manages to take back the land for the Narnian's and installs Lord Bern as ruler of the land.

The next Island they visit, Eustace escapes in order to avoid helping them. He finds a dragon's lair and becomes greedy at all the wealth so hoards some gold. He falls asleep and when he awakens, he discovers that he has transformed into the dragon. Aslan helps to transform him back into a boy and as a result Eustance became a lot more aware and kinder to his cousins and the crew. Caspian determines that the Lord Octesian must have also been transformed into a dragon and eventually died.

They go to Deathwater Island where they see a pool that converts everything to gold. They determine that Lord restimar has also been turned to gold. They then travel to the Island Where Dreams Come True, which is an island immersed in darkness, and discover Lord Rhoop. They also travel to Island of the Star where three of the Lords are lost in an enchanted sleep. A fallen star on the island, named Ramandu, informs them that the only way to awaken them from their sleep is to sail to the edge of the world and sacrifice a member of their crew. They travel to the edge of the world and only Lucy, Edmund, Eustace, and Reepicheep set sail on a small boat to travel further. Reepcheep gives himself up and travels to the edge, where it is assumed that he reaches Aslan's Country - he is not seen again.

Edmund, Eustace, and Lucy then see Aslan, who tells Edmund and Lucy that they are too old to return to Narnia. They are all sent back to England.

Lucy Pevensie and Edmund Pevensie come to stay with their aunt and uncle while their parents are away on vacation. Their cousin, Eustace Scrubb, is a selfish “bully” who likes to tease them about the stories they tell of their previous trips to a land called Narnia. Narnia is a fantastical kingdom only accessible by magic, and Lucy and Edmund’s previous adventures there are related in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950) and Prince Caspian (1951).

The one chronicles of narnia book that greta gerwig's reboot should skip over.

Why Greta Gerwig's Chronicles Of Narnia Movies Are Exactly What The Fantasy Genre Needs After The Last 10 Years

Cillian murphy officially returning for 28 years later, chris pratt's "nintendo cinematic universe" tease for super mario bros 2 faces a huge challenge after $30b movie franchise.

  • The Horse and His Boy may be skipped in Greta Gerwig's Narnia adaptation due to deviations from the series' plot and characters.
  • Netflix faces the challenge of making the weaker Narnia stories work in the reboot, including The Silver Chair.
  • While some Narnia books are more divisive, skipping them is not an option for Netflix's completion of the series.

Greta Gerwig's adaptations of The Chronicles of Narnia will hopefully see the series through its completion, though one book may be skippable in the long run. C.S. Lewis published the Narnia books in the 1950s, and they've stood the test of time as a cherished collection of children's fantasy novels with rich, complex themes. Many modern audiences are familiar with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe , due to Disney's 2005 movie adaptation, but there's six more installments to the Narnia book series to explore.

Greta Gerwig's Chronicles of Narnia movie hopes to begin filming in August 2024.

The Disney Narnia series adapted three books before indefinite delays, and the eventual sale of the property rights concluded any chance of continuation. After purchasing the rights in 2018, Netflix announced Greta Gerwig would direct The Chronicles of Narnia as a film series, or at least the first two. Hopes are high for the iconic fantasy series as Gerwig is one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood, following the $1 billion success of Barbie and her critically acclaimed movies Little Women and Lady Bird . There's still minimal info regarding the reboot or Netflix's plan to structure the series.

Why Greta Gerwig's Chronicles Of Narnia Movies Should Skip The Horse And His Boy

The horse and his boy deviates from the narnia series.

One of the biggest questions regarding Greta Gerwig's reboot is the proper order for the Chronicles of Narnia series . There's some discrepancy regarding the release order and C.S. Lewis's intended chronological reading order. Either way, The Horse and His Boy falls into a weird situation that throws off the course of events. The book is arguably the weakest in the series , though it must be said it serves as a worthy representation of Lewis's themes. When adapting novels into a film series, however, choices will often be made by studios for entertainment value, which could easily result in it being skipped.

The biggest problem with The Horse and His Boy isn't that the book itself is bad; it's that it deviates heavily from the series' characters and overarching plot . Literature tends to have more freedom in exploring different angles of a universe, whereas Netflix may not be as willing to stray away from its main characters and narrative. The Horse and His Boy is a great book for kids, but it's challenging to imagine it translating into a franchise movie that Netflix could market.

Greta Gerwig's Chronicles of Narnia films could be exactly what the fantasy genre needs, distinguishing them from other recent adaptations.

Narnia's Other Weaker Stories Can't Be Skipped By Greta Gerwig's Reboot

Netflix will have to make the chronicles of narnia's low points work.

The Chronicles of Narnia books with the lowest aggregate scores from readers on Goodreads are The Silver Chair and The Horse and His Boy , and while The Last Battle is on the better end, it still has some of the most divisive talking points in the series. Regardless of opinions about The Last Battle or any of the other Narnia books, they can't be skipped if Netflix wants to complete the series. Greta Gerwig and Netflix should bring The Chronicles of Narnia to life as faithfully as possible, but it seems likely that some books will be changed for movie audiences.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Chapter 15 Summary

The wonders of the last sea.

  • As the Dawn Treader continues to sail east, everyone feels different and strange in a good way. The sun is enormous, the light is very bright, and they don't need much sleep. Every morning the singing flock of white birds flies overhead to eat the excess food from Aslan's table, then flies back.
  • Lucy notices that the seawater is unusually clear. As she looks into the sea she sees something small and black moving at the same speed as the ship. When a piece of bread that fell overboard floats across it without colliding, she realizes the black thing is underwater. The black thing becomes enormous for a moment, then goes back to being small.
  • Lucy figures out that the ship has passed over an underwater hill or mountain. The black spot is the ship's shadow, and when the ocean was shallower on top of the hill, the shadow was closer and looked bigger. This means that the water is so clear, she can see to the bottom of the sea.
  • As Lucy studies the sea bed, she notices paths of silver-grey sand running along the bottom through an underwater forest. As the forest ends, the path changes color and is lined with stones. Lucy realizes that it's an underwater road.
  • The road begins to zigzag and get larger, and Lucy understands that it's now going uphill in switchbacks.
  • At the top of the hill, Lucy sees specks moving on the road. They are going to and from a castle or small city made of pearly, ivory-colored material.
  • The narrator tells us that, after they go back to England, Edmund and Lucy decide that the sea-people must build their cities and castles on top of mountains because their topography is the opposite of that on land. On land, the valleys seem nurturing and safe, and the high mountaintops seem distant and dangerous. Underwater, the valleys are dark and cold and have threatening creatures lurking in them, while the mountains in the shallows are warmer, brighter, and more peaceful.
  • The ship passes over the underwater city. Beyond it, Lucy sees fifteen to twenty Sea People riding sea horses.
  • Suddenly a shoal of fat fish swims between Lucy and the Sea People. A different kind of fish that seems fierce swims up from below, grabs one of the fat fish, and dives down again. Lucy realizes that the Sea People are a hunting party. They use the fierce fish like hawks to catch their prey.
  • The Sea People notice the Dawn Treader and swim up to the surface of the water to check it out. They come very close to where Lucy is leaning over the side of the ship. Their bodies are ivory, their hair is dark purple, and they all wear jewelry and coronets. The King of the Sea People shakes his spear at Lucy.
  • Drinian and Edmund come up behind Lucy and ask what she's looking at. She shows them.
  • Drinian tells Lucy and Edmund to turn around with their backs to the sea and look nonchalant. They do, and Lucy asks why. Drinian says that if the sailors saw the Sea People, they might fall in love with the women or the undersea country and jump overboard.
  • Lucy says that when she was a Queen at Cair Paravel, they knew and were friends with the Sea People. (Remember, in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe , the Sea People sing at her coronation.) Edmund says that was a different kind – those people could breathe in the air or underwater, while the people they are seeing now can only live underwater.
  • They are interrupted by the sound of a splash and a cry of "Man overboard!" But it's not a man – it's Reepicheep. Drinian curses Reepicheep, not because he's angry but because he's frightened about what might happen to him.
  • Rhince turns the ship around and they go back to the place where Reepicheep went overboard. As they approach to pick him up, they see that he's trying to tell them something.
  • Drinian is worried that Reepicheep is going to tell everyone about the Sea People, so he runs to the side of the ship and uses a rope to haul Reepicheep up himself, waving everyone else away and saying he can handle one mouse on his own.
  • As Reepicheep climbs up the rope, Drinian leans over and whispers to him not to say anything about the Sea People. But Reepicheep doesn't care about them – he's excited because he has discovered that the water is sweet (i.e. fresh instead of salty).
  • Nobody knows why this matters until Reepicheep repeats the prophecy that was spoken over him in his cradle, which says that the place "where the waves grow sweet" is "the utter East" (15.36).
  • Drinian hauls up a bucket of seawater and gives it to Caspian. He confirms that the water is sweet and says it's more like drinking light than water.
  • Lucy also drinks from the bucket. She says it's wonderful and strong and that she won't need to eat now.
  • Everyone on the ship drinks the strange, sweet water. For a long time they are quiet, feeling very strong and healthy. They notice that, although everything is getting brighter (because this world seems to be flat and they are getting closer to the sun), the water has made them able to withstand the bright light.
  • In the evening Drinian wonders aloud how the ship is moving. There is no wind and the sail hangs limp, but the Dawn Treader is still sailing quickly toward the east. Caspian says they must be caught in a strong current.
  • Edmund points out that if this world really is flat, then they might just be poured over the edge of it. This distresses Caspian, but Reepicheep says that's how he's always imagined the end of the world.
  • Drinian asks Reepicheep what he thinks would be waiting for them at the bottom after they plunged over the edge of the world. Reepicheep says that maybe it would be Aslan's country, but maybe it would be an endless fall.
  • Eustace is confused and says the world is round like a ball. Edmund says that just because their world is round doesn't mean that Narnia's is.
  • Caspian is intrigued by the idea of a round world and asks Edmund whether he has been to the places where people are upside down. Edmund says it's not really like that.
