Frequently asked questions

Can i use the voyager mastercard at any fuel or retail location.

Accepted on both the Voyager and Mastercard networks, the Voyager Mastercard can be used for approved fleet-related expenses including tolls, parking, repairs, hotel stays and restaurants.

What do I do if the pump doesn't read the chip or the magnetic stripe?

Drivers may either need to go inside the store to complete their transaction or contact Voyager Customer Service at 800-987-6591 for assistance.

How does a chip card work?

The embedded chip stores information required to verify, authorize and process transactions. This is the same type of information that is stored today on the magnetic stripe. Chip cards and chip terminals work together to ensure a highly secure transaction.

What are the benefits of chip card technology?

Chip cards can help reduce certain types of fraud. The primary benefit of a chip card is a dramatic reduction in counterfeit fraud at chip-enabled point-of-sale systems (also known as “card present fraud”). For drivers, the chip card provides enhanced security for in-person (“card present”) transactions when used with chip card-compatible terminals and a stronger verification method that helps protect account information.

Why does my EMV chip card not work at all terminals?

As more gas pumps are being updated to accept EMV chip cards, you may have varying card usage experiences at different fueling locations, even within the same brand. Some will be chip-enabled and others will still rely on magnetic stripes. You should continue to follow pump prompts to begin and complete your fuel purchases.

Voyager

With the spacecraft’s computer now working again, the key factor limiting the life of Voyager 1 and its twin, Voyager 2, is declining power levels. Each spacecraft loses about four watts per year, a combination of the decay of their plutonium-238 power supplies and degradation of the thermocouples that turn the heat from that decay into power.

Exploring New Horizons with ForeFlight Voyager on Apple Vision Pro

Learn how ForeFlight’s team built a new way to experience the future of aviation with 3D dioramas, live aircraft views and collaborative exploration.

Brigid Hogan

Aviation software company ForeFlight has once again taken a bold step into the future of technology with its latest product, ForeFlight Voyager for Apple Vision Pro.

“The 3D terrain, live aircraft, and zoom and rotate capabilities all combine to create an immersive experience,” explained Staff Engineer Aaron Farnham, who played a pivotal role in the development of Voyager.

Voyager is designed to deliver a highly immersive experience by allowing users to view airports and aircraft operations around the world through a 3D diorama. One of the standout features is the integration with Apple’s SharePlay technology, enabling users to explore the world’s airports together, adding a social dimension that Farnham noted is “far more exciting in the device than it sounds in print.”

The development of app was driven by ForeFlight’s tradition of early adoption of Apple products. ForeFlight’s strategic foresight into spatial computing not only aligns with current technological trends but also sets the stage for future innovations in aviation software.

Farnham emphasized, “We have found tremendous value in being early in these products, so we considered it a no-brainer to have something for day one of Apple Vision Pro.”

“We have found tremendous value in being early in these products, so we considered it a no-brainer to have something for day one of Apple Vision Pro.”

One of the most significant challenges was the constrained timeline, but Farnham’s team was prepared to take on that challenge.

“I think ForeFlight is one of the best app development companies there is,” he stated. “Once a feature is ready, it is out the door in pretty short order after we have done a thorough quality check.”

Built In caught up with Farnham to learn more about ForeFlight’s dedication to innovation and excellence.

A group of ForeFlight employees stand in front of a small plane on a runway.

Why did ForeFlight need to build this product?

voyager security login

ForeFlight has been at the leading edge of every Apple product. We were on the iPhone AppStore, the iPad and the Apple Watch on the first day they launched. We have found tremendous value in being early in these products so we considered it a no-brainer to have something for day one of Apple Vision Pro.

This does seem like it is the future for many aspects of aviation, but it might take a while for the technology ecosystem to really build up. We viewed its launch as an opportunity to see what can be done with spatial computing and how it can drive the future of ForeFlight products. Now that we have built some new things on top of this platform we can really see how it will shape what we do in other products, like ForeFlight Mobile, going forward.

“This does seem like it is the future for many aspects of aviation.”

What role did you play in developing and launching Voyager?

I am one of the Apple platform developers on Voyager, and I helped build out many of the search and discoverability features, set up our build infrastructure and shape the basic idea of the app.

We are using many of the same tools as our iOS-focused teams since Apple bundled all the Vision Pro technology into Xcode. We did take this opportunity to try out Xcode Cloud for building and distributing the app instead of the TeamCity infrastructure we use for all of our other products. Apple makes it incredibly easy to get this build-and-distribution pipeline going very quickly, and our original deadline was quite short.

A group of ForeFlight employees gather around a table with three laptops among them and focus on a large secondary monitor.

How did you successfully work within such tight timelines?

From conception to shipping, the development process was just shy of three months, and we had various other deadlines for demos of the app during those three months.

Our very first day of starting, we had just seven days to create a demo that was going to be shown around outside the company. We were able to achieve this by placing some of our most experienced Apple Platform engineers — who have a breadth of experience across all aspects of app development — on the project and giving each of us very clearly defined aspects of the app to work on.

We were also able to leverage some of the teamwork practices we’ve developed over time on the ForeFlight Mobile team to ensure we did not step on each other’s toes.

How does ForeFlight compare to other companies in the industry when it comes to how you build and launch new products?

I think ForeFlight is one of the best app development companies there is. I am a bit biased, having been here for almost its entire existence, but we do a good job in delivering incredibly high-value products in a timely fashion and with a regular cadence. I’ve worked places where it takes 18 months to ship a feature that was code complete after just a couple months. ForeFlight is not that. Once the feature is ready, it is out the door in pretty short order — after we have done a thorough quality check. I am quite proud of how quickly we can ship in an industry that takes risk very seriously.

“We do a good job in delivering incredibly high-value products in a timely fashion and with a regular cadence.”

What teams did you collaborate with in order to get Voyager across the finish line?

The server and DevOps teams really stepped up for us. As I said, we had some short timelines and we were able to work with them to get new API endpoints set up for Voyager in an incredibly quick order. I think this was aided by having a very clear idea of what we needed and communicating that to them succinctly. On top of that, they are just great people and willing to pitch in where needed on short notice. ForeFlight is full of team members like that.

Voyager 1 makes stellar comeback to science operations

Engineers coax veteran probe back to health.

NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft is back in action and conducting normal science operations for the first time since the veteran probe began spouting gibberish at the end of 2023.

All four of the spacecraft's remaining operational instruments are now returning usable data to Earth, according to NASA .

Some additional work is needed to tidy up the effects of the issue. Engineers need to resynchronize the timekeeping software of Voyager 1's three onboard computers to ensure that commands are executed at the correct times. Maintenance will also be performed on the digital tape recorder, which records some data from the plasma instrument for a six-monthly downlink to Earth.

As the 50th anniversary of Voyager 1's launch rapidly approaches, and with the probe now 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) from Earth, restoring functionality is quite an engineering feat.

voyager security login

Voyager 1's woes began in November 2023, when the spacecraft stopped transmitting usable data back to Earth. Rather than engineering and science data, NASA found itself faced with a repeating pattern of ones and zeroes, as though the spacecraft was somehow stalled.

Engineers reckoned the issue lay with the Flight Data System (FDS) and in March sent a command – dubbed a "poke" – to get the FDS to try some other software sequences and thus circumvent whatever was causing the problem.

The result was a complete memory dump from the computer, which allowed engineers to pinpoint where the corruption had occurred. It appeared that a single chip was malfunctioning, and engineers were faced with the challenge of devising a software update that would work around the defective hardware.

Dr Ed Stone, former director of JPL, Voyager project scientist, dies at 88

  • Voyager 1 regains sanity after engineers patch around problematic memory
  • NASA tries to jog Voyager 1's memory from 15 billion miles away
  • Voyager 1 starts making sense again after months of babble

Usable engineering data began to be returned later in April, and in May the mission team sent commands to instruct the probe to keep science data flowing. The result was that the plasma wave subsystem and magnetometer instrument began sending data immediately. According to NASA, the cosmic ray subsystem and low energy charged particle instrument required a little more tweaking but are now operational.

The rescue was made all the more impressive by the fact that it takes 22.5 hours for a command to reach Voyager 1 and another 22.5 hours for a response to be received on Earth.

How much longer the Voyagers can continue to function is open to conjecture. The power supplies are gradually degrading, and engineers have been turning off non-essential systems to eke out dwindling resources for as long as possible.

Due the engineers' efforts, there is a very good chance that one or both Voyagers will continue to be operational by the time the 50th anniversary of the mission's launch rolls around in 2027.

A fitting tribute to those who designed the spacecraft, and the mission's first project scientist, Ed Stone, who died recently at the age of 88. ®

Vermont Legislature passes law allowing for the creation of a drug overdose prevention center

The Democratic-controlled Vermont Legislature passed a law Monday that allows for the creation of a pilot overdose prevention center in the state’s biggest city, Burlington, overriding a veto by the state’s Republican governor, Phil Scott.

The law allocates $1.1 million for the creation of a center, including a safe injection site where people can use narcotics under the supervision of trained staff and be revived if they take too much.

The money will go to the state Department of Health to award grants to Burlington to establish such a center. It will come from the Opioid Abatement Special Fund, which is made up of Vermont’s share of a national settlement with drug manufacturers and distribution companies.

“The data is clear. Overdose prevention centers save lives, connect people to treatment, reduce pressures on emergency rooms and Emergency Medical Services, and reduce public drug consumption and discarded supplies in our communities,” Senate President Pro Tem Philip Baruth said in a statement.

The center will provide referrals to addiction treatment as well as medical and social services. It also will offer education about overdose prevention and distributed overdose reversal medications.

Two years ago, the first sanctioned overdose prevention centers in New York City opened, according to the Drug Policy Alliance. Rhode Island is expected to open one in Providence this summer.

The vote came after Legislature reconvened Monday to try to override Scott’s vetoes of several bills, including one that would crack down on the use of online personal data by companies.

By Monday afternoon, the state House and Senate had overturned the governor’s veto of a bill that requires state utilities to source all renewable energy by 2035, making Vermont the second state with such an ambitious timeline. Scott had said the renewable energy bill would be too costly for ratepayers. Under the legislation, the biggest utilities will need to meet the goal by 2030.

“The renewable energy standard will put Vermont on track to achieve 100% renewable electricity by 2035, dramatically reducing planet-warming carbon pollution and saving Vermonters money over time,” Baruth said in a separate statement. He called the governor’s veto an attempt to continue rejecting “critical progress on climate action” at a time when Vermonters still are facing “the impacts of recent climate disasters .”

The Legislature also voted to override Scott’s vetoes of a property tax bill to pay for education that would increase property taxes by an average of nearly 14% and create a committee to recommend changes to make Vermont’s education system more affordable. Scott has said Vermonters cannot afford double-digit tax increases.

In addition, the Legislature overrode Scott’s veto of a measure that restricts a type of pesticide that’s toxic to bees. The Legislature passed the bill after New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed off on what she described as the nation’s first law last year to severely limit the use neonics in her state. In vetoing the bill, Scott said it was “more anti-farmer than it is pro-pollinator.”

Each chamber needs two-thirds of those present to vote to override to be successful in passing the bills.

Scott vetoed eight bills this session, saying last month that the Legislature is out of balance and at times “focuses so much on their goals they don’t consider the unintended consequences.” While his vetoes aren’t popular in Montpelier, “I’ll take that heat when I believe I’m making the right choice for the everyday Vermonter,” Scott said.

The data privacy bill was considered to be among the strongest in the country that would allow consumers to file civil lawsuits against companies that break certain privacy rules. Scott vetoed the legislation last week, saying it would make Vermont “a national outlier and more hostile than any other state to many businesses and non-profits.”

Microsoft: New Outlook security changes coming to personal accounts

Bill toulas.

  • June 15, 2024

Outlook

Microsoft has announced new cybersecurity enhancements for Outlook personal email accounts as part of its 'Secure Future Initiative,' including the deprecation of basic authentication (username + password) by September 16, 2024.

The software giant also announced the end of support for 'Mail' and 'Calendar' apps on Windows, the deprecation of Outlook Light, and removing users' ability to access Gmail accounts via Outlook.com.

Moving to modern authentication

Starting September 16, 2024, Basic Authentication (username and password) for Outlook clients will be phased out for all Outlook personal accounts, including Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, and Live.com.

The basic authentication method is unsafe as it sends credentials over the wire without encryption, allowing networking monitoring tools to capture them. Furthermore, browsers and other applications commonly cache basic authentication credentials until the browser is restarted, allowing them to be used by others with access to the device.

"While Basic Auth was the standard for quite some time, it also made it easier for bad actors to capture a person's login information," explains Microsoft .

"This increased the risk of those stolen credentials being reused to gain access to a person's email or personal data. Email-based cyberattacks have only increased with time, so we are requiring modern authentication for all Outlook customers to better help protect their personal accounts."

By switching to more modern authentication methods, the basic auth credentials will be replaced by token-based authentication backed by multi-factor authentication (MFA).

However, these changes will cause problems for users using older apps that only support Basic Authentication, as they will no longer be able to access Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, or Live.com email accounts after September 16.

Instead, users will need to switch to the latest versions of Outlook, Outlook for Windows, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, or other compatible email clients that support modern authentication methods.

Users with a Microsoft 365 subscription can use the Outlook version included in their plan, while those using Outlook 2021 (build 11601.10000 or higher) are already equipped with 'Modern Authentication' and will not be affected.

Deprecations and EoL announcements

Microsoft also announced the deprecation of the Mail and Calendar apps, encouraging existing users to migrate to the new Outlook for Windows, which offers enhanced security.

Mail and Calendar will remain on the Microsoft Store until December 31, 2024, and after that date, they will no longer be supported.

A "switch to Outlook" toggle will be added to the interfaces of both apps to streamline the migration process for impacted users.

Another deprecation is the 'light' version of the Outlook Web App, which reaches the end of support on August 19, 2024.

This lightweight version was provided for users with older and less capable web browsers. Microsoft is now retiring it due to the heavily degraded experience and lower security standards it adheres to.

Microsoft also announced that, as of June 30, 2024, Outlook.com will no longer allow users to access Gmail accounts. Standalone Outlook clients for Windows and Mac will continue to offer this functionality, though.

Finally, as a side effect of the Cortana deprecation, 'Play My Emails' and 'Voice Search' on Outlook mobile will also be removed at the end of this month.

This bit is a little misleading: "The basic authentication method is unsafe as it sends credentials over the wire without encryption, allowing networking monitoring tools to capture them." because most implementations of Basic Authentication would be sent over https and not http.
