For some travelers, packing light equates to a vacation of repeated outfits. Luckily, this doesn’t have to be true. By focusing on versatility, you can mix and match items to create countless outfits from just a few items. Keep reading to discover versatile packing at its finest and the importance of a travel capsule wardrobe.

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Written By: Maggie Fogg

As avid travelers, we firmly believe in packing light (as light as possible, in fact). Flying with just a carry-on and packing cubes can save tons of time and energy – and help you side-step some major headaches, including lost baggage and heavy suitcases you have to drag up a flight of stairs.

But when you only have a small suitcase, and as a result – only a few pieces to work with – figuring out what to pack and how to plan outfits can be tricky.

How do you keep your wardrobe incredibly limited without surrendering your style? How do you pack only a few key items, while maintaining versatility in your outfits?

Working from a capsule wardrobe is your best bet. Sticking with basic separates in neutral colors goes a long way for creating a variety of outfits with limited items.

If you are packing for a combination of business and pleasure in the same trip, it becomes all the more important to choose well-made styles that can be dressed up or dressed down with a few accessories.

How do you build a tight wardrobe without adding too many pieces? How do you keep your suitcase lean without choosing only safe, boring and basic options – and steering clear of going too far the other way, packing stylish pieces that you’ll only ever end up wearing once?

Let’s look at a few essential tips…

And don’t worry. A capsule wardrobe doesn’t need to be made of  dull all-black outfits . You can use the guidelines below to create a versatile travel wardrobe featuring a variety of clothing styles ( this  is how to mix and match prints).

Read this to learn how to pack light stylishly  for any destination!

The answer is to follow one simple rule – the rule of 3. This is more than wearing every piece you pack at least 3 times. Pack all items with the intention of wearing each item in a variety of outfits that work in at least three different occasion types.

This could be dressy, professional, and casual. Or it could be sexy, relaxed, and polished. It all depends on your lifestyle and the nature of your trip. When you consider using each piece with this kind of versatility, you’ll be able to build a stylish capsule wardrobe for any trip, and have tens of great outfits on-hand for any occasion.

Choose from one of eight  travel capsule wardrobes to help you plan for your trip!

OUTFIT 1: Necklace | Tank Top | Jeans | Bag | Sandals   OUTFIT 2: Hat | Necklace  |  Shorts | Sandals   OUTFIT 3: Blazer | Necklace | Pouch  | Skirt | Flats

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe: One Piece, 3 Ways

Take, for example, a pretty tank top like the wine-colored one shown above. It can be paired with a relaxed skirt and a blazer for a casual business event.

However, just as easily, it can be dressed up for an evening out on the town with a slim pair of jeans and a cool rocker-inspired choker and cross-body bag .

And third, the tank looks just as stylish with a beach babe pair of cut-off denim shorts, boho-inspired travel sandals and a straw hat – on point for a summer musical festival.

Take a look at this post to see how you can make 3 weeks worth of outfits with just eight pieces of clothing!

OUTFIT 1:   Earrings | Bag | Blouse | Sunglasses | Joggers | Flats   OUTFIT 2: Tank | Earrings | Lipstick | Bag | B o o t s OUTFIT 3:   Shirt | Tank | Necklace | Backpack | Shoes

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Guidelines for 3 Uses

Now that you know how to use one piece in three different ways, follow these guidelines to make the most of your outfits.

Be Meticulous With Fit

Stick to flattering, figure-skimming silhouettes. Avoid anything with too tight of a fit, as it won’t appear relaxed or chic. Likewise, avoid anything with a loose fit since it can read as sloppy and unpolished. Don’t be afraid to tailor your clothing, especially when it’s something you absolutely love!

Stick to Classic Styles With a Hint of Trend

Choose fairly neutral colors and simple cuts and patterns for versatility and longevity, but look for unique twists that add visual interest. This could be lace detail, embroidery, funky zippers – anything that expresses your personality.

File Into 3 Occasion Buckets

When you’re shopping for new items or pulling items from your closet to pack, mentally file each item into its occasion bucket. Is it sexy, relaxed, and girly? Or is it business-casual, classic, and refined? Hint: this rule also works really well outside of travel packing for your everyday wardrobe, too.

Don’t Forget to Map Your Outfits

Particularly with separates, make sure you can pair each item with several other items you’ve packed. It doesn’t help you if you can wear a cute embroidered blouse to the museum, a nice dinner, and on the plane but haven’t any bottoms you can pair with the top.

Have Fun With Accessories

Follow the same rule of 3 with accessories, including bags, shoes, jackets, and jewelry. Shop for high-quality, versatile pieces that are fairly classic in design but have a fun flair. For shoes, all you need are three pairs: one for sightseeing, one for a special activity, and a bonus pair.

These are the most cute and comfortable shoes for travel !

creating-a-travel-capsule-wardrobe

OUTFIT 1: Blazer | Dress | Necklace | Crossbody | Flats   OUTFIT 2: Hat | Sunglasses | Handbag |  Shoes   OUTFIT 3: Jacket | Earrings | Lipstick | Pouch |  Sandals

For example, this black and white striped dress is modern and airy with a slightly French nod. It can be dressed up for a summer night with bold earrings and a trendy belt. It also pairs well with polished accessories – like a cream blazer and ballet flats – for a cultural outing. Or, pair the dress with white sneakers , a summer hat, and a super-cute canvas tote for a breezy look to wear when visiting a local farmers market.

Ultimately, the accessories help give this dress a different feel for each occasion, but the guidelines above are used for each outfit. Each of the accessories are basic in their feel, but they have a trendy or stylish twist and can be paired with other outfits for other occasions.

With this simple rule, you can streamline your travel packing, change the way you look at your everyday wardrobe, and transform how you shop in the future.

How To Build A Travel Capsule Wardrobe

When you go on a vacation, does it seem like you overpack?  Do packing it all in a big suitcases to hold everything ?  Do you pack complete outfits to wear on the entire trip?

If you use a capsule wardrobe for your closet, you are already a step ahead in packing for a vacation.  You already know that core closet essentials are the foundation of a capsule wardrobe and that they can mix and match to give you dozens of outfits! If you don’t use a capsule wardrobe, find out more with, “ Capsule Wardrobe 101: What Is A Capsule Wardrobe?”.

If you have no idea where to begin to build a travel capsule wardrobe, scroll down and see the step-by-step guide below. If you need a travel capsule already prepared for you, see the Travel Capsules category for several ideas.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe In A Carry On Suitcase

Step 1. Plan

Find out the weather forecast for your destination.

Is it going to be hot or cold? Sunny or Rainy? The type of clothes you pack will be determined by the weather, so pack accordingly.

Clothes Fabric/Material

If you will be traveling to a hot climate, be sure to pack clothes made of cotton or linen, as those fabrics breathe well in warm temperatures and will keep you cool. If a cold climate is where you will be traveling to, you may want to pack a few items made of wool to hold in the warmth.

Are you going to be sightseeing and doing a lot of walking, attending special events or traveling for work? You can pack only casual clothes, only dressy clothes or a mix of both depending on your activities of your trip.

“Dress Like the Locals”

Find out how the residents of your destination dress to blend in. Dressing in attire that stands out may attract attention of pick-pockets and possible thieves, which you don’t want! Research how the locals dress on Google or Pinterest to find out more.

Step 2. Clothes

Pack core closet essentials.

Rely on your core closet essentials to build your travel capsule wardrobe and you will have endless outfit possibilities! What are core closet essentials ? They are neutral color, basic essentials that are classic and timeless and never go out of style. They are, for example: blue jeans, black pants, black skirt, white/gray/black tee, white blouse, denim jacket, utility jacket, black flats, etc. See the Capsule Wardrobe Starter Kit for 35+ core closet essentials you can choose from when you pack for your trip. The Capsule Wardrobe Starter Kit contains several pieces from the Simplified Style®: A Year-Round Core Closet Essentials Capsule Wardrobe E-Book. Simplified Style® includes all the neutral-color basic essentials you will need for a capsule wardrobe, a wardrobe plan for each of the 4 seasons of the year, Over 400+ Outfits, plus more!

TIP: Never pack complete outfits, but Pack Individual Items instead.

Packing complete outfits (a top and bottom and/or layer) can lead to overpacking. When you focus on packing individual items (X number of tops, X number of bottoms, X number of layers, etc) you will have the most outfit possibilities because they will ALL coordinate !

Use Neutral Colors

Make sure to pack clothes in mostly solid, neutral colors , like Black or Navy, Gray, White, Beige, Tan or Camel. Just like in creating a full capsule wardrobe (see “ How To Start A Capsule Wardrobe: A Step-By-Step Visual Guide “), use Black or Navy as your Base Color when building your travel capsule, so all your clothes will coordinate!

Adding Accent Colors or Patterns (Optional)

Take your Travel Capsule up a notch by adding 1 or 2 accent colors . Or, if you want to add a pattern to the mix, add only 1 top or bottom as the pattern piece. This is optional! If you are packing only clothes with neutral colors, you can add color to your travel capsule with a scarf, belt or jewelry!

Step 3. Shoes

Wearing the right kind of shoes on your travels is very important! You want to wear shoes that not only look great but are comfortable for walking. Here are some recommended styles of shoes that are appropriate for activities on a trip.:

brown strap sandals (sightseeing – warm weather) black slip on sneakers (sightseeing – warm weather) nude block heel sandals (events/dinner – warm weather) black pumps (business trip events – warm or cool weather) black or nude loafers (sightseeing/dinner – warm or cool weather) black or taupe booties (sightseeing – cold weather) black or brown tall boots (sightseeing – cold weather)

What To Wear On The Plane

You can  wear one of your outfits  from your travel capsule wardrobe (to save room in your suitcase) and pack the rest of the capsule in your carry-on suitcase! Plus, you can wear the same outfit on the flight back home. An example of a comfy outfit to wear on the plane:   jeans, tee, cardigan or utility jacket and a pair of flats or sneakers.

How Many Items To Pack

Count the number of days on your trip, including the days to and from your destination. That’s how many days you will pack for. As a rule of thumb, the longer the trip, the less you want to pack to make room in your suitcase.

Use the Universal Packing List below to pack for the number of days on your trip. Feel free to adjust accordingly . Using the packing list below is the most efficient way of packing for your trip using the minimum amount of clothes you will need. You may or may not need to wash any clothes you pack, depending on your laundry preference, how many days of your trip and the climate you are traveling to (see “Laundry Consideration” below). For example: a top can be a t-shirt or blouse, a bottom can be pants, jeans, shorts or skirt and a layer can be a denim jacket, utility jacket, vest, cardigan, etc.

work travel capsule

Whether you are traveling to a cold environment or one with just a chill in the air, you will want to pack a coat ( insulated parka ) or a light jacket ( utility jacket , insulated vest or rain jacket ). If you will be flying to your destination, you can save room in your suitcase by wearing it on the plane if it is approximately the same temperature as the place you will flying from. Delta Airlines lists a jacket as a “freebie”, meaning you are free to carry it on the plane with you. If your coat or jacket is easily packable, you can always pack it in your suitcase with your travel capsule wardrobe. A great coat to wear for the Winter that you can roll up and pack in your suitcase is an Insulated Parka like this one .

Step 4: Accessories

You don’t want to overpack your suitcase with accessories since you can use accessories repeatedly throughout your trip. You can pack these accessories and/or wear them on the plane to save room in your luggage/tote/handbag:

  • Crossbody Bag  – This type of bag can be worn as a shoulder bag or crossways over your chest. If you get one with handles, you can also carry it like a handbag. If you have one with a zipper and no outside pockets, it will keep thieves and pickpockets away, and also wear it across your chest to be secure. This Small Transport Crossbody comes in black or brown so it will coordinate with all your outfits!
  • Scarf – Cashmere scarves are not only soft, but they are warm too, especially in cold climates.
  • Bandana – These are great to wear in the Summer as an alternative to jewelry. You can also tie one on your handbag/crossbody handle to add a pop of color!
  • Mix & Match Jewelry (such as Kendra Scott) – Pick up to 2 necklaces, 2 pairs of earrings and a bracelet all in the same jewelry tone (gold, silver or rose gold) so they all coordinate.
  • Hat – Either wear it on the plane or pack a “packable hat” in your suitcase. Straw hats are great to wear in the Spring and Summer and Wool hats are best for Fall and Winter.
  • Beanie – If you are traveling to a cold climate be sure to pack a beanie in a neutral color, like black or gray to coordinate with all your outfits.

The Necessary Extras

“carry-on” suitcase.

By bringing your suitcase with you on the plane, you can avoid the extra time and money checking in your luggage. Plus, by keeping your suitcase with you prevents the possibility of lost luggage! Just as the name implies, this small-sized suitcase meets the standard airline bag requirements to be allowed to carry onto the place and stored in the overhead compartment above your seat. If you will be traveling via a plane to your destination, be sure to check with your airline to make sure your suitcase is compliant. See Delta Airlines Carry-On Rules to find out more information on what items you can bring on the plane with you.

Pack like a pro and travel in style with this 5-Piece Luggage Set with Carry-on Suitcase, Tote and Packing Cubes (6 colors available) from world traveler TV host Samantha Brown.

These are great carry-on suitcases to pack your travel capsule wardrobe:

Tote To Carry On The Plane

Most airlines, like Delta Airlines , allows a carry-on suitcase and a purse on the plane. If you want to carry your crossbody on the plane, but also need to pack some items for the plane trip, you can carry on a tote. You can put all your necessities (wallet, passport, phone, lipstick/lip balm, earbuds, computer, eyemask for the naps on the plane, scarf/bandana and your crossbody in the tote. Be sure to check with your airline to find the dimension restrictions of the bag you can bring on the plane. Here are some totes and crossbody bags to take with you on your trip:

Packing Cubes & Other Organizers

When you pack your clothes in your suitcase, do they tend to shuffle around and get wrinkled? You need to use packing cubes ! This budget-friendly 3-Piece Packing Cube Set will keep your clothes organized for easy packing in your carry-on suitcase. Pack like a pro and travel in style with this 5-Piece Luggage Set with Spinner, Tote and Packing Cubes (6 colors available) from world traveler TV host Samantha Brown.

If you like to pack convenient travel-size toiletry containers , you store them in this Toiletry Bag that easily expands into a hanging bag. If you need a makeup bag , this Tumi Nylon Cosmetics Case is a bit of a splurge, but it will help keep your makeup in its place while traveling.

Laundry While Traveling

If you need to freshen up your clothes while on your trip, you can pack a small, packable container of laundry detergent and wash any pieces in the sink in your hotel room, then hang to dry! When building your travel capsule wardrobe, avoid packing dry-clean-only items. This 6-Piece Travel Laundry Set contains everything you need to maintain clean clothes while traveling!

Travel Packing Checklist

Use the following checklist to help you pack for your trip (you may or may not need to pack all these items). Use the “Notes” section to add additional items to your list or write your travel schedule. You can also download the travel checklist here .

4 Ways To Wear a Bell Sleeve Top

4 Ways To Wear a Bell Sleeve Top

Love all of your ideas! I am getting ready to do a Baltic cruise in 2 weeks and I’m struggling with how many dresses for the cruise and clothes for ports. Do you have any suggestions?

Great comprehensive post! Loved all your ideas and lists. I still like to take a backpack on the plane instead of a tote because I can fit so much more in it. All of my toiletries, blow dryer, straightener, curling iron, a book, rolled up rain jacket, and usually a pair of Nike’s. I can even squeeze in a couple of extra tees or thin cardigans folded Marie Kondo style if needed.

This is wonderful!! Thank you!

I’m a little surprised at the suggestion of 5 tops and 4 bottoms for 14 days. Is the 4 bottom suggestion related to taking of skirts or shorts? I don’t wear dresses or skirts and was thinking that 2 pairs of pants would suffice for a 2 week European trip. Am I being overly optimistic?

You are Brilliant, of course! I like the math of your presentation. Yes, 20 days in Italy was fine with just a backpack of clothing and a bit of sink-laundry along the way. Now I am prepping for 3 weeks in France next spring with 3 bottoms, 5 tops and 2 layers. Your posts are helpful and oh so inspiring! Thank you.

Carrying women’s lightweight backpack w toiletries, makeup, meds, foldable umbrella, Kindle, small purse ~ along w the other suggested items above is so much easier than a purse or tote. Outside pockets for refillable water bottle, secure pockets for travel documents.

Wow, this is a really helpful post Leanne! I love the Tory Burch tote!

Since I have a Capsule Wardrobe I rarely travel with full-size luggage, a carry-on is usually more than enough. And people are always impressed with my minimalistic packing 🙂

I usually make sure to include at least one versatile layer like a jeans jacket even in hot climate in case it gets chilly in the evening or to keep warm on the plane.

I am a million mile flyer and haven’t carried a hairdryer for 20 years. Hotels always have them… even Air BnB. Our US hairdryers aren’t compatible with many countries’ and all of Europe’s current.

Please add chargers to the tech list to avoid wasting time shopping for one. Your phone can be charged in any country with the correct plug adapter. And a plug converter for your smart phone and/or tablet .

HEy just heads up for anyone travelling to Australia in summer. It is hot and humid. Most locals change outfits at least three times a day so pack extra tops, bottoms and underwear so your not washing everyday.

This is the first Pinterest post that I’ve seen with an Universal Packing List! So many useful tips, too… thank you.

I wanted to reply to your comment. I went to Europe for 2 Weeks. I wore 1 pair of pants, a cardigan and a tee on the plane. I packed 2 pairs of pants, 1 more cardigan, and 6 tees. It was all mix and match. I figured out by adding a scarf that made that 84 different combinations (something like that) It all fit into a carry on back pack. One pair of pants were jeans, the other 2 were black ponte pants, and I really could have gotten away with just one pair of the black pants. So, I think since you aren’t going to wear skirts or dresses, 2 pairs of pants would be just fine.

Im traveling to Asia in January 2020 for 22 days. However there will be extremes in Temperatures! Shanghai-50-60s, Nanjing-30-40s, Taipei- 50-60s, Hainan- 70-80s. How do i pack for such extremes each location about 5-7 days? Help!

I am going to las vegas for 2 days in December with temps 50’s/60’s degrees. I Fly in late Thursday night, fly back out early Sunday. So literally there Fri and Saturday. Touring during the day and a show each night. What should I pack?

I have several travel capsule wardrobes on the blog that you can select from. They are for several days, but I would recommend picking 3-4 tops and 2-3 bottoms, plus 1-2 pairs of shoes to pack. I always recommend packing clothes and shoes with neutral colors so they will all coordinate, making several outfits. Depending if you are to dress up for any of the shows, you may want to pack a dress, black is always a classic color to wear. Here is the link to all the travel capsules on ClassyYetTrendy.com: https://classyyettrendy.com/category/travel-capsules/

I am going to Italy, Spain, United kingdom & then cruising thru Scandinavia in April for 58 DAYS! The weather is going to vary, especially up in the Baltics. Should I base my packing on spring plus a jacket from your 14 days list? I mainly wear pants but will need 1 dress for formal nights on the cruise. Appreciate your advise & am enjoying your website.

I recommend first to check the weather in those countries on the days you will be there. Then, based on the weather, you will know what season capsule wardrobe you will need to pack, plus what type of coat or jacket. Have fun and safe travels!

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned is exercise clothes (though I realize not everyone is a fitness freak like me). I’m trying to decide how much gym wear to bring for a 10-day overseas trip.

That’s a great suggestion! I did a blog post for 10 Athleisure Essentials, which all coordinate well together for a mini capsule wardrobe, and you could pack them for your trip! If you are going for 10 days, you may want to pack either a pair of jeans or another pair of leggings.

None of my exercise clothes are fit to be worn outside of the gym (ha!), but I sure there are good suggestions when I need to upgrade that part of my wardrobe. I was thinking of wearing my jeans on the plane, but I know it won’t be comfortable for a 13-hour flight. Leggings are something I never embraced wearing outside of exercising, so I need to do some research in that area.

I also don’t have a problem checking in luggage (even a carry-on sized on) if I need to bring slightly more than what a small suitcase can fit. Having a slight physical disability, it’s not a good idea for me to drag suitcases around the airport, and its a bit of a challenge for me to cram it in the overhead bins. My current carry-on case is older (20+ years) and doesn’t fit as much as the modern cases do.

How to Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe for Any Destination

From weekend trips to working as a digital nomad, a travel capsule wardrobe can save you space and weight, all while becoming a more sustainable traveler.

How to Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe for Any Destination

What is a capsule wardrobe, and how can it help you while traveling? Maybe you already know what it is, and you’re wondering how to build a capsule wardrobe from the ground up. We’re here to answer all those questions and more!

Before we dive in, we should mention that there are different definitions of what a capsule wardrobe is, and some people use the term differently for travel than they do for daily use. Using a capsule wardrobe comes down to preference and what works best for you.

How to Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe for Any Destination

Don’t like a specific rule? Break it! Want to bring a shirt you love that’s not exactly practical? Do it! The most fun thing about creating a capsule wardrobe is making one that suits your needs perfectly. Let’s dive into it!

What is a capsule wardrobe?

A travel capsule wardrobe is a limited but specific set of clothing that can be worn in dozens of configurations. Since all your tops match all your bottoms, you can create seemingly endless outfit combos.

It's like a math problem in school—let's say you have three of each of the following items that all go with each other: shoes, pants, shirts, hats, and jackets. With that alone, you can make 243 unique outfits. That's mathematical magic!

How to Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe for Any Destination

By utilizing a travel capsule wardrobe, you’ll save space, weight, and money by only bringing the gear that you need. However, there’s definitely an art to making it work, which is where we come in. If you're packing for your next trip and decide to bring a tie-die shirt halfway through, and the rest of your wardrobe doesn't match, you'll have to add a few more things. Before too long, your one bag travel backpack will be as heavy as your aunt's rolling luggage.

When researching a travel capsule wardrobe, many people find themselves overwhelmed by the idea that their outfits must be bland or expensive to work, but that isn't the case. A travel capsule wardrobe is different for every person, and you can personalize it as much as you'd like to, right down to the buttons on the shirts you pack.

Who can benefit from a capsule wardrobe?

This might sound like an exaggeration, but anyone traveling can benefit from a travel capsule wardrobe! This is especially true for digital nomads, one bag travelers, and anyone trying to save space.

How to Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe for Any Destination

For digital nomads, packing a capsule wardrobe ensures that you’re living and working comfortably, look professional on Zoom calls, and are prepared for in-person meetings while on the road. One bag travelers can save space and weight in their pack by bringing more versatile clothing and accessories so they have more space for other gear that takes up more room, like technology.

Traveling with kids is another instance where a capsule wardrobe can come in handy. Loading up gear for two adults and a child or two is daunting, especially if you haven’t done it before. However, saving space for your kids' needs is easy if you utilize a capsule wardrobe for both adults. You can also create a combined capsule wardrobe for your children if they’re close enough in age and size.

How to Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe for Any Destination

Let's put it like this—do you want more space in your travel backpack? Do you want your bag to be lighter? With a travel capsule wardrobe, you can do that and more.

Where can you take a capsule wardrobe?

This is where things get tricky. You can build a travel capsule wardrobe for any climate, weather, or occasion; however, creating one that spans temperatures can take more work and time to perfect. If you're going to Florida, Brazil, or Greece, you'll pack warm-weather gear. You'll pack for London, Seattle, or Debundscha with rain in mind. For those who jump from location to location, like a trip across the continent, you have to get smarter with your selections and choose more diverse gear.

Luckily, here at Pack Hacker, we've been around the block a few times. Through layering clothing, choosing materials that breathe and keep you warm, and with packable jackets that you can take anywhere, going from the water to winter is an easy transition.

How to Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe for Any Destination

However, no good thing is always good, and that's true for a travel capsule wardrobe. If you're going to fashion week, you might want extra clothing to ensure the tabloids don't catch you in the same shirt twice.

More realistically, if you're going somewhere without reliable laundry services, using a travel capsule wardrobe can be more challenging. If you only have three shirts on a two-week trip, things might get stinky after a while. Plus, you’ll likely run out of underwear. You can get around that by washing your clothing in an external pouch or sink, but only some people are comfortable with or want to do that.

A capsule wardrobe isn't always the best move if you're going on a more rugged adventure. You can choose more durable clothing, but if something happens to one of your three shirts, the rest of the trip will be a rigid rotation between what you have left. It's doable and worth a shot, but these things are worth considering before jumping into a travel capsule wardrobe.

How do you build a capsule wardrobe?

First, decide what climates, events, and situations you want your minimalist wardrobe to cover. You can have multiple capsules for different kinds of trips or one that covers all the bases for the places you like to visit or frequent. You can be as rigorous with these guidelines as you want, but it's essential to ensure that your travel capsule wardrobe isn't so specific that it only works for one trip because that defeats the purpose. Once you get started, we've got a few tips!

How to Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe for Any Destination

We look for a few materials when building a minimalist wardrobe for travel.

Merino wool is durable, breathable, and resists smells, making sense for clothing you wear more than once before washing them. If Merino wool isn't your jam, organic cotton is another great material that's more sustainable, durable, and comfortable.

Linen is another good shout if you're heading somewhere cold because it traps heat and works in moderate climates because it's breathable. Plus, it's better for the environment than synthetic fabrics. Hemp is another favorite for some travelers, considering its durability and natural resistance to mildew. It tends to wrinkle easier than some fabrics, so it’s essential to pack smart with packing cubes and other organizers.

How to Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe for Any Destination

If you are going with nylon or polyester, look for recycled materials to try and limit your environmental impact. A capsule wardrobe ensures you can purchase fewer articles of clothing, and buying recycled or repurposed materials further limits your environmental impact.

After you've decided which materials are suitable for you and your skin, you need to determine the color palette of the wardrobe. If you already know what colors you like best, that's great! If you don't, the internet is your friend. After all, it's how you ended up here. You can look up color palettes online to find a jumping-off point and hone it as it grows.

Regarding patterns and colorways, we generally avoid crazy prints and bold colorways. Instead, stick to your color palette and choose one or two accent pieces complimenting that palette. This way, your fun clothing will still go with everything else, so it isn't wasting space.

How to Build a Travel Capsule Wardrobe for Any Destination

Due to the nature of a travel capsule wardrobe, layering is essential, so opt for clothing that layers well. Baggy clothing doesn't translate well because it's hard to put one baggy article over another. Form-fitting and slim-cut attire are easier to layer, so long as it isn't too tight.

Also, think about how your clothing interacts. If you bring a sweatshirt with a hood, you don't need a coat with a hood. They’ll interfere with each other, and it can be awkward to try and hide one or use two simultaneously.

Don’t worry, though—making decisions about your fit will get easier over time. It can be daunting, but once you start the journey, you'll get the hang of what works, what doesn't, and what fits your style.

How many pieces should be in a capsule wardrobe?

Like most questions, the answer depends on how you wear clothing and how you travel. A safe solution is 25—35 articles of clothing, but it may be higher or lower depending on the trip that you're going on. As a frame of reference, we try to keep our Digital Nomad Packing List has between 25 and 30 clothing-related items and accessories. Becoming a digital nomad means packing as light as possible so you can prioritize tech.

If you’re not full-time traveling (or if you’re just getting the hang of a capsule wardrobe in general), your number of items might be higher than that. And that’s okay! It may also increase for cold weather trips or activity-specific adventures, like a hiking or skiing trip. For shorter trips or warm weather destinations, your number of items might be lower, or you may be able to pack more items like tank tops and t-shirts since they pack down smaller.

Precision packing is a true art form. We all know packing for vacation can be stressful. You want to have options for everything on (and off ) your agenda, but you don't want to overpack and overwhelm yourself. Luckily, there's a formula that makes packing a breeze—no matter where you're headed.

Enter the travel capsule wardrobe : your key to balancing practicality with style options to fit your entire itinerary, thanks to versatile pieces that transform seamlessly from outfit to outfit. Of course, how you'll curate this depends on where you're headed and what kind of vacation you're taking, which is where we come in. Ahead, see our guide to building the ideal travel capsule wardrobe for six vacation types , complete with insights from two fashion experts.

Meet the Expert

  • Audree Kate López  is a professional fashion stylist and editor based in New York City.
  • Caroline Maguire is the fashion director at Shopbop.

"It's about choosing the right pieces that are practical yet on-trend/fashionable. I always like to write down my outfits by day to see what I can wear multiple times to save room on packing." — Caroline Maguire, fashion director at Shopbop

On the Road Again

If your road trip finally made it out of the group chat (congrats!), the next step is deciding what outfits you want to wear on your grand adventure. If you've ever spent hours sitting in the car, you know comfort is key, but that doesn't mean style is out of the question. Grab your favorite pair of dad sneakers and pair them with either a matching set or a full-body onesie and oversized jacket ( see a few standout options here )—you'll be enviably cozy while emanating chic athleisure vibes. "I love dressing up, but you will never catch me in tight denim or a restricting top during a road trip," López tells us.

Oceanside Style

Packing for a tropical vacation is slightly easier than a winter getaway, as swimsuits and lightweight dresses take up less space than a puffer coat and snow boots. Still, if you're looking to simplify your packing list, focus on different accessories to change each look. Whether you love a good pair of sunglasses, a bucket hat (we rounded up a few standout options to wear in the sun ), a belt, or jewelry, accessorizing goes a long way.

For a beach getaway, the best travel capsule wardrobe comprises pieces that take you from poolside to dinner with ease. A linen shirt ( check out a few of our favorites here ) doubles as a coverup and looks great tucked into jeans with sandals, while a one-piece bathing suit—a poolside staple—also works as a bodysuit when paired with a miniskirt . "There is no need to pack a ton of extra tops or styling pieces when your swimsuits can be used as a top, bodysuit, undergarments, or layered under a sheer dress," says fashion stylist Audree Kate López.

If you only want to pack one handbag, you can't go wrong with a basket bag to fit all your necessities. "A beach tote can be used during the day at the pool/beach to carry essentials, towels, a book, etc., but can also be used as a carry-on personal item on the plane," López tells us.

Max Elevation

Packing for a mountain getaway may seem daunting, but we have the ultimate outfit formula to stay warm on the slopes and feel chic as you head straight to the lodge for an après-ski hot chocolate. The key to packing for a winter vacation is base layers. "You need to layer up in the mountains, so opt for fleece pullovers and warm hats, plus cute and cozy pieces you can mix and match throughout your stay," says Shopbop fashion director Caroline Maguire.

For a ski trip or other winter travel, you'll obviously need practical outerwear like a down jacket and snow boots, but don't forget to put thought into your base layers to maximize your style options. A turtleneck bodysuit ( see a few of our favorite bodysuits ) layers well under winter gear, plus you can elevate it for nighttime with chic trousers and a cardigan . As for pants, we love the below moto puffer style by Alo, as it works overtime as both regular cargo pants and a ski option.

Take On the City

The key to versatile and stylish packing for a city trip is channeling quiet luxury , proving the trend's staying power yet again. Think Sofia Richie Grainge 's style, including tailored basics and understated accessories. Rather than packing five different bags, choose a style with straps that you can adapt between shoulder and crossbody styles, like the below option from Brandon Blackwood. Pack a comfortable pair of black booties (the lower the heels, the better, since you'll be doing a lot of walking). "Avoid uncomfortable 'trendy' shoes and pack items that you can wear pretty much all day without needing to go back to the hotel and change," López tells us. A good pair of leather boots— like any of these —can go with any look.

Lastly, a city travel capsule wardrobe is best with a good coat and blazer to style with any outfit. Then you'll be able to swap out basics like a white tee, jeans, and a little black dress to create a range of sophisticated ensembles to fit everything on your agenda.

High Seas Fashion

When you're about to set sail on the trip of a lifetime, what do you pack? While you'll probably be soaking up a lot of sun on a cruise, it's important to remember that after the sun sets, it can get pretty chilly. Thus, a lightweight cardigan (we love these cashmere options ) will be your go-to from day to night when you need an extra layer. Additionally, a lightweight matching set like the one below from Abercrombie is an ideal option for packing light amid changing temps, as you can wear it together or separately to create a whole range of looks. "Pack easy day-to-night styles—things you can lounge in during the day by the pool or on [an] island, and then dress up easily for dinner and a show," Maguire advises.

One with Nature

Whether you're an outdoorsy type who loves camping or prefer the glamping experience, you'll want to be prepared to face the elements, and you can absolutely do so in style. A raincoat or windbreaker (ideally a two-in-one jacket) is a necessity, and these days, the market truly has all-weather pieces to fit every taste—the below water-resistant parka from Totême is a sophisticated, versatile option. You'll also need a good pair of sneakers for hiking , and it's a bonus if they're also waterproof.

"I am a glamper myself and love it," Maguire tells us. "You'll need layers for a camping trip. Go for an oversize flannel button-up and your favorite pair of denim —even overalls could be fun here." Look for moisture-wicking items for practicality and layer them with trend-forward pieces like a plaid flannel shacket.

HOW TO BUILD A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE

Going somewhere? Here’s a step-by-step guide to follow as you  build a capsule wardrobe  for your travels.

Check the Weather

woman with curly hair wearing woven sunvisor outside

I always pack  this sun visor  on summer trips.

Alright, before you dive into packing mode, let’s start by checking out the weather forecast for your destination. After all, a cold weather capsule will require different travel essentials than your beach vacation travel wardrobe.

Know the forecast so you can pack light while still bringing all the pieces you need.

Choose Versatile Basics

summer capsule wardrobe graphic with multiple clothing pieces

When building your travel capsule wardrobe, versatility is your best friend. Think trusted basics that can be mixed and matched effortlessly. And here’s the secret sauce: opt for a neutral color palette.

I’m talking about colors like classic black, crisp white, or tan. These timeless shades will ensure that the pieces in your suitcase play nicely together. Take a look at the  summer capsule  above for inspiration.

Spring travels ahead? This travel capsule is exactly what you need.

Map Outfits to Your Itinerary

Yes, it’s outfit creation time.  Rather than only thinking about what looks good, create outfits to align with activities.  So pull out the itinerary.

Nice dinner on Friday night? Create an outfit for that. You’re going hiking on a scenic trail? Pack a hiking outfit along with layers in case the weather changes.

The perfect travel capsule doesn’t just appear. Plan those outfits to avoid the dreaded “ I wish I packed [insert missing item that’s at home” moments.

Pick Wrinkle-Free Fabrics

Summer Capsule Wardrobe Colorful

The colorful 17-piece summer capsule wardrobe I created.

Picture this: you’re strutting through the airport in your travel outfit and then you catch a glimpse of yourself in a mirror. What’s that? Wrinkles galore on your clothing. Let’s avoid that fashion faux pas.

Choose  wrinkle-resistant fabrics for your travel wardrobe  like Lyocell, spandex, and polyester blends. They’ll keep you looking fresh, even after flights, hikes, and tours.

Pack Layering Options

airport outfit summer

This utility vest is the perfect light layer.

I’m a layer lover and you should be too. We know that Mother Nature can be a bit unpredictable. Smart travelers should pack a few lightweight cardigans, jackets, or scarves that can be easily layered or shed depending on the weather.

This not only keeps you comfy in changing weather but also expands outfit possibilities- a win-win.

Bring Only Essential Shoes

If there’s one category where I tend to overpack, it’s shoes. And I know I am not alone. While it’s tempting to bring your entire shoe collection on your trip, you’re better off leaving most at home.

Instead,  focus on bringing essential pairs of shoes that cover all your bases.  Think comfy sneakers for exploring, a slip-on pair of sandals for beachside activities, and a dressier pair of shoes for nice dinners. Quality and functionality win the shoe game, my friend.

Don't Forget Accessories

A thick headband and statement earrings are a power accessory duo.

A thick headband and statement earrings are a power accessory duo.

No matter what kind of trip you’re going on, accessories are a travel essential. These level up your travel wardrobe without taking up much suitcase space.

Add items like jewelry, hats, and scarves to your travel packing list so you can dress outfits up and down easily. For example, pairing a dress with a baseball cap and sneakers instantly gives it a more casual and relaxed vibe.

Test Out Your Travel Wardrobe

midi skirt and tank top orange outfit

I tried this outfit on at home and ended up wearing it on a Miami trip.

We all know the pain of trying on an outfit mentally only to hate it when we actually try it on. So, once you have built your capsule wardrobe, try on some outfits to see how they look and feel.

A trial run offers the option to make adjustments and get closer to your perfect travel wardrobe.

The 5-4-3-2-1 Packing Formula

In search of a simple approach to building a travel capsule wardrobe? Allow me to introduce the  5-4-3-2-1 formula . You may need to alter the method depending on your trip length and activities.

But if you’re on the hunt for a minimalist wardrobe that you can fit in a carry-on, this is your go-to.

Start with five tops that suit the local climate. Since you only have room for five, focus on versatile tops. Sprinkle in a combination of short and long-sleeve options to maximize outfit creation potential.

Item Examples:  tank top, off-the-shoulder shirt, oxford shirt

Yes, the title is intentionally vague because the bottoms you choose will depend on the location. So feel free to pack shorts, skirts, pants, or a combination of the three. I recommend bringing at least one pair of dressier bottoms along.

Item Examples:  linen shorts, wide-leg trousers, flowy midi skirt

A dress is a one-and-done item that makes outfit creation simple. This formula calls for three dresses. The combination is up to you. You can choose two casual and one formal dress, for example. I aim to bring dresses that straddle the line between formal and casual. That way, I can use accessories to dress them up or down.

Item Examples:  sundress, evening midi dress, wrap dress

3 Shoe Options

Alright, time for shoes. As you can see, the number of shoes and dresses in this formula is the same. Yes, the 5-4-3-2-1 formula should technically be the 5-4-3-3-2-2-1-1 formula. But, for obvious reasons, that mouthful of a name didn’t catch on.

Item Examples:  slip-on sandals, tennis shoes, hiking boots

2 Swimsuits

In a summer travel capsule wardrobe, swimwear is a must. But rather than packing 15 bikinis for your beach vacation, pack light and experience the benefits. This 5-4-3-2-1 method means neater luggage and intentionality behind your swimwear choices.

Item Examples:  one-piece, bikini set, tankini

Almost done packing. How simple is this?! Okay, for bags you’ll want a couple of options. I usually bring one large bag like a tote and then a smaller bag that I can take to dinner or wear out and about.

Item examples:  crossbody bag, clutch, tote

1 Accessory

Don’t panic. You’re allowed to bring more than a single accessory in this capsule formula. The idea here is to only bring one of each type. So one pair of sunglasses, one hat, and one statement necklace should suffice to round out your travel outfits.

Item Examples:  sunhat, sunglasses, printed scarf

TRAVEL WARDROBE FAQS

The biggest benefit of a  travel capsule wardrobe is that it makes packing simple and efficient, ensuring you have the right pieces for the entire trip. But of course, there are more benefits including:

  • Planning outfits is easier with a cohesive collection that can be mixed and matched easily.
  • Getting ready takes less time on your trip since you have planned ahead and only packed what you need.
  • Looking stylish while traveling is simple with a travel capsule. You look put together on your trip thanks to your well-planned wardrobe.
  • Luggage space can be used more efficiently since you are not overpacking. You don’t have to lug around an overstuffed suitcase and have room to bring back gifts and souvenirs.

If you want to pack light but find it difficult, the travel capsule is ideal for you.

Great question! The number of items in your travel capsule wardrobe will depend on how long your trip is and your access to washing machines. Here are some helpful ranges to consider when packing:

Weekend Trip:  For a short weekend getaway, a travel capsule wardrobe can range from 5 to 10 items. This typically includes a few tops, bottoms, a dress or two, and a layering piece.

Weeklong Trip:  For a weeklong trip, you can aim for a capsule wardrobe consisting of 10 to 20 items. This expanded selection offers more outfit options that align with activities on your trip.

Two-Week Trip:  A two-week trip will require a slightly larger capsule wardrobe. Consider packing anywhere from 15 to 30 items. That way, you have enough mix-and-match options to cover different occasions and weather.

Month-Long Trip:  If you’re embarking on a month-long trip or longer (hats off to you, world traveler), you can build a capsule wardrobe of 20 to 40 items. This range allows for ample variety and adaptability to accommodate the weather changes and array of events that longer stays include.

Work Travel Capsule Wardrobe

work travel capsule wardrobe

I’m super pumped for today’s post because it’s something I am very passionate about.  I’m sharing my ultimate work travel capsule wardrobe.  I travel frequently for work and these aren’t just day trips.  They sometimes last multiple days.  Packing for these trips is painful. I use a carry on so finding items that fit in the suitcase and can be worn for multiple days is challenging.  I use a carry-on and I want everything to fit in it. It can really be challenging.

Packing for work travel requires planning and thought.  There is no throwing a bunch of stuff in a suitcase and hoping it works out.  You have to plan your outfits and be organized while packing.  That is why the most work goes into selecting the individual pieces.

I always, always, always bring a carry-on when I travel for work.  I do this because it’s the quickest option.  Checking a bag and picking it up in baggage claim requires at least an extra 30 minutes and I literally don’t have time for that.  I often get off the plane and go right to the office or a meeting.

From Plane to Boardroom

Which brings me to my next point which is traveling in your work clothes.  I need to travel in my work clothes and look fresh when I get off the plane.  Let me tell you, this is actually hard. Just about every article of clothing I own gets wrinkled when I sit down.  That is that nature of the fabric, especially if it’s a work suit.  There is no looking fresh and perfectly pressed in a work suit that you’ve traveled in for hours.  Until now!

My all time favorite brand, M.M. LaFleur has introduced packable suiting.  Their packable suiting is machine washable, wrinkle resistant and perfectly polished.  The pieces hold their shape after being packed in a suitcase for hours.  They have four pieces in the collection; The Colby Pant , The Cobble Hill Skirt , The Moreland Jacket and The Yan Jacket .  You can mix and match them to create the perfect suit.

Their suiting comes with a travel bag to pack up your pieces and put them in your suitcase.  They even come with directions on how to perfectly pack the pieces.  This maximizes space and efficiently packs each piece.   I want to maximize my space in the carry on while not overpacking.  Selecting the individual pieces is vital to creating office ready looks.

Work Travel Capsule Wardrobe

If you recall a while ago I created my 5 pieces for 5 outfits capsule wardrobe  and wore those outfits to work for an entire week.  It was a huge success for me personally and it’s one of my top posts that you all love and read.

Well I’ve come back with an equally exciting post that focuses on work travel.  I’ve created a work travel capsule wardrobe using 6 pieces that creates 7 outfits.  Now you don’t necessarily have to wear these while on work travel, but it is designed to be effective when your closet is your suitcase 🙂

The capsule wardrobe consists of two options that can be worn for travel, a formal meeting outfit, a work dinner outfit and everything in between.  For shoes I’ve selected a basic black heel and a snakeskin flat. You can actually select any shoes, but having a flat for travel that you can also wear in the office is key.

The Pieces

Tops – the joan and the ismelka.

The tops in this capsule are ideal for travel as they are odor resistant.  They have been treated with polygiene which is an anti-odor finish that won’t hold smells.  It’s actually used in a lot of active-wear brands and makes complete sense to be use on work wear pieces.

The Joan top is a simple top that can be worn in a lot of different settings.  It’s from the M.M. LaFleur casual collection. You read more about that collection in this post here .  But the top is a favorite in my closet and I grab for it constantly. It’s the perfect week to weekend top.

The Ismelka was released as part of the M.M. LaFleur Up, Up and Away Collection.  The top has all the glamour of 1960’s air travel.  The whimsical wrap takes this top up a notch and adds a touch of sophistication.  It’s also machine washable which is a huge plus for me.

The Colby Pant

These are the pants of all pants!  They are part of M.M. LaFleur’s packable suiting line.  I can say with 100% conviction that everyone needs this pair of pants in their closet.  They are absolutely magical!

Let’s start with the length of these pants .  I’ve been 5’9 since the fifth grade and I’ve always had short pants.  All my pants were ankle pants when they technically weren’t.  Having a long pair of skinny pants now is so exciting.  My ankle will never be cold in the winter ever again.

The fit and feel of these pants are out of this world.  They have an elastic waist and are tailored beautifully.  They hug the right places without being tight which means the leg falls just right from the hip.  The pants feel like an athleisure pant while looking like a polished office pant.

And the best part they are completely packable and will not have any wrinkles.  Yes, you read that correctly. Often when I travel for work I don’t bring my steamer and hate ironing clothes at a hotel.  With these pants I don’t have to worry about looking like a wrinkled mess. They unpack and look like I freshly steamed them no matter what.

I told you this is the pant of all pants.  So what are you waiting for, get a pair today!

The Moreland Jacket

One of the best pieces to own in your work wardrobe is a blazer/suit jacket.  I have several, but this one is special…it’s packable, won’t wrinkle and is machine washable.  This is unreal that a jacket that looks super polished for the boardroom is actually machine washable.

The fabric is magical because you can wear it for hours or have it packed in your suitcase for hours and it looks like you just picked it up from the cleaners.  Its ideal for work travel. I spend hours on a plane and when I land I need to meet with clients. I need to look put together and fresh and having a suit jacket that doesn’t wrinkle is just what I need.

The jacket can be paired with the Colby Pant or Cobble Hill Skirt to create the ultimate travel suit.

Angelou Shawl

No matter how hot it is outside the airport and airplane are always freezing.  I never travel without an extra wrap.  And the Angelou Shawl is my go to!  Not only does it keep me warm, it looks so chic!  I usually wear it draped over my shoulders, but I’ve been known to use it as a full on blanket.  It also looks polished to wear in the office for a meeting or take along as a wrap at dinner.

Black Dress

You can not go wrong with a black dress.  You’ve heard it before, but you can dress it up and dress it down.  If you select a form fitted dress, like the Shirley Dress , then you can also wear the dress as a skirt.

It’s my signature move actually!  Put your dress on and then put a top, like The Joan (or  The Didion ) over it.  It appears that you are wearing a pencil skirt and a blouse. It’s genius!  And it allows you to get more wear out of your dress, especially in a travel capsule wardrobe.

The Outfits

I’ve categorized the outfits below into travel, boardroom, everyday and dinner.  The best part of the travel capsule wardrobe is that you can wear each outfit for any occasion.  With the packable suiting you never look wrinkled and always look polished.

Summer is just around the corner, which means you can finally start dressing how you want as opposed to how to defend yourself against the rain and cold. Warmer weather, more social events and vacations all combine to make this season the most fun when it comes to planning outfits—and if you choose wisely you will be able to fit everything you need for lounging by the pool, wandering around museums and sipping cocktails on a rooftop in just a beach bag. This summer, forget about needing a suitcase as our picks below are all you’ll need to create an elevated travel capsule wardrobe.

Why Should I Have a Capsule Wardrobe?

If you are looking for less stress and more fun, then cutting down on the amount of clothing you bring on vacation eliminates a huge amount of hassle. If you are flying there is no need to check in a bag, meaning you save yourself money and buy yourself some time before and after your flight. While everyone else is waiting by the luggage carousel—you get to saunter past and head straight to the hotel. Packing and unpacking takes minutes, leaving you feeling relaxed and in full on holiday mode.

How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe for Travel

Take the time to do some pre-planning and with a little bit of creativity—putting together a travel capsule wardrobe is well worth the effort. Schedule a couple of hours to go through your closet and see what you already have, do a try on session and then make a list of items you can add to complete your outfits.

Invest in High-Quality Pieces

You want to choose pieces that will see you through not just this summer but many vacations to come. The only way to do that is by avoiding trends and cheap materials. Knowing what suits your shape and what you feel most comfortable is an almost guaranteed way of ensuring you will rewear a piece over and over again.

Consider Versatility

Before investing in an item, think of at least three types of occasions where you could wear it. For example a slip dress can be paired with sandals for the beach, heels at night for dinner or with a white shirt over it for sightseeing. Choose a color palette of your 3 favorite shades so that everything works together and choose a multi-use scarf or sarong to add some vibrant prints. Stick with timeless silhouettes that are unlikely to go out of fashion. Lay out all the different outfit options before you travel and take photos on your phone to save you time deciding when you are finally on vacation.

Pick the Right Fabrics

In addition to selecting the right styles and colors, you want your clothes to be low-maintenance—pieces that need little to no ironing.  Keep an eye out for garments made from lyocell and tencel as they are both eco-conscious and breathable, making them the perfect option for hot weather. Even in Summer, some destinations get chilly at night so including a cashmere sweater will have you covered whatever the temperature. To save space in your bag, wear it on the plane.

Capsule Wardrobe Checklist

With just a few carefully selected pieces and some smart styling you should have enough outfit options for all your holiday activities. We trawled through the spring/summer collections to compile these essential picks to get you started.

Whether you want to spend your days lounging on the beach or strolling through art galleries, you are going to need a mix of both casual and formal clothing. A blazer such as this one from Massimo Dutti ( Oversize Blazer $299 ) is light enough to keep you cool but also smart enough to elevate any outfit. We also love how the cut of this swimsuit from Zara Home ( Swimsuit $70 ) means it can be worn as a bodysuit with either jeans or a skirt. Keep reading to find out what other clothing we’ll be throwing in our travel bag this summer.

Frequently asked questions, what is the ideal number of clothes for a capsule wardrobe.

There is no set rule when it comes to the number of pieces for a capsule wardrobe. If you prefer dresses you may be set with just 5 options. On the other hand if you favor separates one pair of shorts, one skirt and one pair of trousers teamed with 5 tops may work better for you while still taking up minimal space.

What is the rule of thumb for a capsule wardrobe?

A good rule of thumb when building a capsule wardrobe is that everything should be able to be worn together. Each top should go with each bottoms and every outfit combo should match with the footwear you are bringing with you.

In the fashion multiverse of constant newness, nothing feels quite as relevant as a well-curated capsule wardrobe composed of timeless staples. Think jeans, a white T-shirt, a blazer, a versatile dress, and a cashmere sweater; these are items that will serve you for years and can streamline the daily process of getting dressed. And while you're traveling, it’s important to add efficiencies wherever possible so you spend less time worrying about your clothes and more time enjoying the destination.

The key is to invest in high-quality pieces that will last you for years to come. Think tote bags, blazers, and other fundamentals – invest slightly more now and reap the dividends over the years, all while minimizing valuable time spent wondering what to wear.

Having a capsule wardrobe doesn’t necessarily mean wearing the same basic uniform on repeat – pieces you love can be styled creatively with different shoes, accessories, and colors tailored to suit different occasions. You can remix the same LBD (little black dress) from day to night simply by adding heels and an evening clutch. Once you have the foundations in place, defining your style becomes a simple process.

Ahead, see our top picks for building a capsule wardrobe for travel along with expert tips and the best brands to shop, from accessible options like Everlane and Quince, to more contemporary brands such as Vince and Theory.

Invest in high-quality pieces

Like a beloved Chanel bag that is passed down through generations (or sold for a premium at a vintage boutique), it is worth investing in high-quality staples that will stand the test of time. The better the quality, the more durable and refined the item is likely to be. We suggest looking for quality materials and construction, and if it’s not a brand you trust, check reviews online. Plus, buying one hero piece per category is a sustainable, space-saving option (and we certainly need that when we’re traveling with limited suitcase space!).

Prioritize versatility

The whole concept of a capsule wardrobe is based on versatile, well-made staples, and that generally means neutral colorways and classic silhouettes. You can never go wrong with black, white, or neutral shades that can adapt to suit any ensemble and simple shapes that transcend trendiness. Nicole Wiesmann, Vice President of Design for Banana Republic, advises to “always keep it versatile with a few statement pieces.” Another excellent tip? Planning ahead. “I try on all my outfits before I pack to ensure I am bringing complete outfits, and I encourage my husband to do the same,” she says.

Choose the right fabrics

When building a capsule wardrobe for travel, look for fabrics that are wrinkle-resistant so you don’t need to worry about ironing or steaming your garments on arrival. Lyocell and Tencel are some of the best options. Also, cashmere and denim are great to pack since they rarely crease. It also depends on the climate. “When traveling, I check the weather five days before I leave and continue to check until the day I depart for the trip,” explains Wiesmann. “Weather may force you to change choices,” she adds. “If I see a summer week is turning to rain, I grab a trench for my carry on. For warmer or humid weather, I’ll grab linen pieces. I always pack a seasonless wardrobe with seasonal pieces layered in.”

While your capsule wardrobe for everyday should contain the aforementioned essentials, it will look slightly different for an island holiday in a destination like St. Barth’s, where you’ll need to factor in swimsuits and coverups, or for a ski destination where you’ll need insulating layers and jackets. Seasonality is, of course, a vital factor when packing a capsule wardrobe for travel, but the below clothing categories are relevant for various destinations.

Best T-shirt

Amour vert paris rib tee.

The beauty of this white T-shirt is the stretchy, ribbed fabric that doesn’t crease, making it the perfect addition to your travel capsule wardrobe. It has a slim fit, with an elegant wide hem around the crewneck collar, and the hem hits at the hip. It’s as fitted as a bodysuit, so it tucks into pants and skirts easily and serves as a great layering piece to have in your arsenal.

L’AGENCE Marguerite Jean

L’Agence has some of the most comfortable and flattering jeans on the market, available in multiple shades, shapes, and textures. These are perfect for travel since they have the brand’s durable “super stretch” denim that is comfortable enough to wear on planes, trains, and long car rides, while maintaining their structure.

Best Blazer

Cuyana relaxed blazer.

Everyone needs a classic black blazer in their wardrobe and this iteration from Cuyana is one of the best on the market, with a flattering, versatile cut, and excellent composition. It’s a trans-seasonal piece, made from a luxurious blend of virgin wool, viscose, and elastane, and it can be worn open over jeans and a tee, or done up as a double-breasted blazer with the accompanying sash belt.

Best Cashmere Sweater

Minnie rose cashmere shrunken crew.

We love the fit of this cashmere sweater, which is slim enough to comfortably layer under jackets and coats yet relaxed enough to wear without feeling too constricted. It has a slight crop, so it’s perfect for wearing with pants as is (no need to tuck) and it’s available in 14 colors from soft pastels to classic navy and black.

Theory Ballerina Neckline Mini Dress in Good Linen

This LBD could work just as well paired with fresh white sneakers for a concert or a night out as it would accessorized with heels and a chic mini bag. It’s made from the brand’s revered good linen fabric, which has a decent amount of stretch and breathability, perfect for warmer climates. The ballerina-style neckline is flattering on the decolletage, and it has a slight fit and flare style with a mid-thigh hem.

Best Swimsuit

Zimmermann one-piece.

Whether you’re going to the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, or the Hamptons, one thing you’ll definitely need is a stylish swimsuit. This classic Zimmermann one piece has a shapewear-like effect, accentuating the bust with a sculpted bodice and cinching in the waist. It’s a style that can also double as a top paired with denim shorts or linen pants. The Australian-born brand also has a gorgeous collection of beach dresses and coverups that are perfect for resort destinations.

Best Wool Coat

Vince classic straight coat.

A high-quality wool coat is a wardrobe staple you’re likely to wear on repeat during the cooler months, and this tailored, timeless Vince coat is something that could live in your wardrobe for decades. Although it comes at a higher price point, it’s a piece that is made to last, with an insulating wool blend and sturdy construction that is sure to withstand the elements of urban life in the winter.

Each season brings new shoe trends, but certain styles will always be relevant: classic ankle boots, strappy sandals, sleek pumps, and fresh white sneakers. When packing, keep in mind that shoes generally have the most weight and bulk out of any item, so opt for pairs that are lighter and easier to fit in your suitcase (i.e., leave the platforms at home).

Best Sneakers

Koio capri sneakers.

Fresh white sneakers are always in style and are useful for any season, paired with a flowy dress in the summer, or with jeans and a coat in the winter. This leather style from Koio is as clean as they come, with no visible logos or colors – just a classic style in plain white which pairs well with everything.

M.Gemi The Cristina

M.Gemi’s Cinzia Due was recently named the best dress shoe of 2023 , and the same classic aesthetics with quality features can be found throughout the collection. The Italian brand’s most popular leather boot style, The Cristina, is as elegant as it is comfortable for strolling around cities all day. It’s flattering on the ankle with a secure fit, and it has a 2.2-inch heel that adds a bit of elevation.

Best Sandals

M.m. la fleur slide.

These buttery soft leather sandals become more comfortable with wear. They have a classic silhouette with a slight cap heel, a wide leather strap, and a square toe. These are perfect for wearing with maxi dresses at resorts where you need something that isn’t too tall, and they also look great paired with capri pants or even jeans.

Scarosso Patent Pump

A classic pointed-toe pump will never go out of style, and these will look just as good paired with dresses for a night out as they do with denim or a suit. We love these sleek stiletto pumps from Scarosso, made in a glossy patent leather with a 3.3-inch heel.

Accessories can add a touch of flair to any outfit. A simple linen dress for a day in Lake Como? Channel the dolce vita vibe with a silk scarf. A classic swimsuit and coverup? A wide brim hat will complete the look. And, for everyday, a good pair of sunglasses is essential, ideally in a black acetate. Another must-have is a well-made leather handbag to hold all your daily essentials.

Best Sunglasses

Celine oval sunglasses.

Nineties-style oval sunglasses continue to be the biggest trend in the eyewear world, and this classic style from Celine is one of the best versions available, with a medium size that suits most face shapes and the brand’s iconic logo embossed in gold along the arms.

Quince Mongolian Cashmere Scarf

A simple scarf in a neutral color is a great thing to pack for cooler destinations, and we love this luxuriously soft Mongolian cashmere version from Quince, available in seven different colors.

Sarah Bray Poppy Sun Hat with Natural Grosgrain Ribbon

This elegant Sarah Bray hat at Aerin instantly elevates any summer outfit and maintains its shape while traveling. It has an interior elasticated band, so you can adjust the fit to suit your needs, and it makes any simple dress or coordinating set look resort-ready. We love the wide brim and thick grosgrain ribbon.

Best Handbag

Louis vuitton capucines mini.

Let’s caveat this by acknowledging that, like any designer item, it is an investment, but if you are looking for a forever handbag that is sure to polish any outfit, this Louis Vuitton style is an excellent option. The top-handle style is in fashion right now, but it’s also timeless, and the leather is of the highest quality, sure to serve you well for decades to come.

Best Brands for Building a Capsule Wardrobe for Travel

Using only the finest materials and tailoring techniques, Vince is a go-to destination for building a capsule wardrobe. It has elegant essentials for both men and women, like classic Oxford shirts , cigarette pants , structured blazers , and silky slip dresses . It also has buttery-soft leather bags and a high-quality shoe collection including loafers, fresh white sneakers, sandals, and heels. Another draw is that it is available in an extended size range, going up to 3X.

Renowned for its sustainable basics, Everlane is always a reliable retailer for seasonal separates. In the summer, you’ll find a variety of dresses , blouses , shorts, and skirts available in a range of neutral color options, and in the winter, there are cashmere sweaters, wool coats, and parkas. There are also shoes, bags, hats and leather goods in wearable, versatile styles.

For affordable men’s , women’s, and children’s essentials look no further than Quince. We ranked it as one of the best linen brands for its extensive range of coordinating linen sets, flowy dresses , and classic pants. But it also has a stylish edit of cashmere and leather staples that are incredibly good value.

Bite Studios

For wardrobe staples that infuse the latest fashion trends in a wearable way, look no further than Scandinavian brand, Bite Studios. Everything is made from organic, low-impact materials with exceptional tailoring. Some of our top selects include the sleeveless turtleneck , the signature tee , and the pure wide leg denim.

Reformation

Whether you’re looking for a coordinating linen set or a bombshell dress for an occasion , Reformation has a wide variety of stylish staples at a reasonable price point. We love the mini bags , the mesh Wesley flats , and the best-selling Jessi linen dress .

There are different variations, but generally this rule refers to packing five tops, four bottoms, three dresses, three pairs of shoes (that includes dress shoes , if you'll need them), two bags, and one of each of a few destination-specific items (e.g. a swimsuit for somewhere warm or a scarf for somewhere cooler). The idea is that you’re not aimlessly loading your closet into a suitcase — you’re packing versatile pieces that pair well together that can be worn for different situations throughout your trip.

It all depends on the individual garment – check the specific instructions written on the label, and if there are none, look up what the care recommendations are for particular fabrics online. Many will be dry clean only, some hand wash cold, and some can easily be tossed in the washer and dryer (like cotton or denim).

With so much luggage getting lost at airports lately, I personally always take enough to survive on in a carry-on (and I'm particularly partial to Tumi’s 4-wheeled carry-on). But for checked luggage, it's best to keep shoes separate from clothing, and put a plastic bag or garment bag around anything you don’t want to get damaged (in case your toiletry bag leaks or you encounter any other spill-related situations). The queen of organization, Marie Kondo, has an excellent method of maximizing space with her famous KonMari fold (a rolling technique that also minimizes creasing) and advises using packing cubes.

The Tortuga Promise

At Tortuga, our mission is to make travel easier. Our advice and recommendations are based on years of travel experience. We only recommend products that we use on our own travels.

Table of Contents

Steve Jobs wore his trademark black turtleneck. Former President Obama keeps his wardrobe simple to avoid decision fatigue . Forbes even made a list of celebrities who always dress the same . What can we learn from the idiosyncrasies of the rich and famous?

We can learn to keep our wardrobes simple, especially when traveling.

Building a core wardrobe of matching basics will help you pare down your packing list and travel with just a carry on backpack , saving time and money.

Plus, since your clothing is meant to mix and match, a capsule wardrobe makes figuring out what you want to wear that much easier—you can recombine any pieces you like into a fresh outfit.

In this article, we’ll show you how to build a capsule wardrobe that will fit in your carry on and keep you looking sharp wherever you go. Then we’ll look at example packing lists for different types of trips and travelers . Finally, we’ll dig into specific product recommendations that deserve a spot in your bag.

Carry-On-Sized Travel Backpacks

Bring everything you need without checking a bag.

  • Carry-On-Sized
  • Easy to pack
  • Comfortable to carry
  • Built to last

What Is a Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a collection of basic, functional clothing that won’t go out of style . Each item should be multi-purpose and compatible with the rest of the wardrobe. Think versatile staples , not this season’s must haves .

An ideal travel capsule wardrobe will also consist of a small number of quality items that can withstand the rigors of life on the go. You shouldn’t need to replace everything on your next trip.

Finally, you should genuinely like every item in your capsule wardrobe. Remember, simple and functional don’t have to mean ugly. You want to feel good about reaching for these pieces again and again.

Woman wearing the Outbreaker Travel Backpack

Choose the Right Bag

A capsule wardrobe won’t go far without the right bag to pack it in. Choose a travel backpack that’s carry-on-sized like the Outbreaker Backpack . The Outbreaker fits a week’s worth of clothes, making it ideal for traveling with a capsule wardrobe.

Your travel capsule wardrobe should follow the principles of packing light .

Pack for One Week

You don’t have to replace your entire closet. Your packing list should include enough items for one week’s worth of outfits. When you travel for longer than a week, do laundry.

Pack Layers, Not Bulk

A few thin layers are more versatile than one heavy layer. Light pieces are also smaller to pack, making them perfect for carry-on traveling.

Choose the Right Fabrics

To avoid breaking out the iron in every place you stay, opt for clothing that’s naturally wrinkle-free .

Merino wool is good at repelling odors and regulating temperature, while synthetic performance fabrics are good at wicking sweat. Avoid 100% cotton, which is quick to smell and slow to dry.

Aim for clothes that are easy to maintain. Vacation is too short to waste on trips to the dry cleaner.

Invest in Quality Materials and Craftsmanship

A high-quality t-shirt can immediately elevate your outfit. You also don’t want ripped seams and lost buttons on the road, so don’t cheap out on the basics. Opt for well-made items that you can count on for many trips to come.

Avoid fast fashion, which won’t hold up in a capsule wardrobe.

Simplify Your Color Palette

Keep your capsule wardrobe within a matching (and ideally neutral) color palette, so you don’t have to decide which clothes to wear together. Leave bright hues and wild patterns as accent pieces or for the rest of your closet at home.

Pick Timeless Cuts

Remember, a good capsule wardrobe is made up of a small number of durable, classic pieces. Go for timeless silhouettes that make you feel comfortable and confident, and don’t waste energy worrying about the latest trends.

Consider Tailoring

Proper fit can make all the difference between looking sloppy and looking chic. Hem pants, shorten sleeves, and take in waistbands to add polish to even the most basic outfits.

You’ll be getting a lot of use out of these pieces, so a trip to the tailor is worth the cost.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Checklists

Our basic capsule wardrobe packing list will work for most kinds of trips. We’ve based this list off of our ultimate carry on packing list , which is designed to last a week in a carry on . You can mix and match items and lists to build one that makes the most sense for you and your travels.

We’ve also included additional packing lists for business travelers , outdoor adventurers, and those heading to extreme climates below.

Women’s Travel Capsule Wardrobe

  • 3 comfortable, casual t-shirts or tank tops
  • 2 blouses for dinners, formal outings, etc.
  • 1 light jacket or fleece
  • 3 bottoms, at least one of which can be dressed up and down
  • 6 pairs of underwear
  • 6 pairs of socks
  • 2-3 bras (including 1 sports bra; stick to smooth, skin-toned fabrics that won’t show through your tops or require delicate cleaning)
  • 1 pair of multi-use shoes for walking and everyday use
  • 1 pair of “nice” shoes (flats, booties, fancy sandals, etc.)
  • 1 pair of athletic shorts
  • Optional: 1 pair of exercise shoes (tie or clip these to the outside of your bag to save space)
  • Optional: 1 midi skirt , maxi skirt, or lightweight dress (if you’re traveling somewhere cold, add a pair of tear-resistant black tights )

Men’s Travel Capsule Wardrobe

  • 3 comfortable, casual t-shirts
  • 1 button-up shirt for dinners, formal outings, etc.
  • 3 bottoms , at least one of which can be dressed up and down
  • 1 pair of “nice” shoes (oxfords, loafers, etc.)

Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Use this packing list for beach vacations , cruises, and other warm-weather trips.

  • 2-3 casual, comfortable t-shirts or tank tops in breathable fabrics (skip long-sleeve tops)
  • 1-2 short-sleeved blouses or button-up shirts
  • 3 bottoms, at least one of which can be dressed up and down (consider breezy pants, shorts, or lightweight skirts )
  • 2-6 pairs of socks (If you plan on lounging at the beach all day, you can cut this number down to two: the pairs you’ll wear on your roundtrip flights)
  • 2-3 bras (sports bra and everyday)
  • 1 pair of flip flops or walkable sandals (if you’ll be doing any sort of hiking or water sports, make sure to get sandals that you can secure to your foot)
  • 1 pair of “nice” sandals or shoes
  • 1 baseball cap or sun hat
  • 2 bathing suits (one to wear while the other is drying)
  • 1 beach cover up (a lightweight sarong, beach dress, or shorts/top combo)
  • 1 lightweight cardigan, gauzy button up, or other layering top (you don’t need a heavy or insulated jacket for hot-weather trips, but should still bring a light cover-up for air-conditioning and unexpected weather changes)

Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Use this packing list for winter travel, especially if you’ll be spending time sightseeing outdoors.

  • 1-2 comfortable, casual t-shirts for layering
  • 2 long-sleeved base layers for particularly cold days
  • 1 long-sleeved button-up shirt or blouse for dinners, formal outings, etc.
  • 1 sweater , fleece, or hoodie
  • 1 packable puffer jacket for added insulation (depending on how cold and wet your destination is, you may need to bring an additional coat or shell to protect against rain and wind)
  • 3 bottoms , at least one of which can be dressed up and down
  • 1 pair of weather resistant boots (duck boots, Blundstones , etc.)
  • 1 pair of “nice,” closed-toe shoes
  • 6 pairs of tall socks
  • 1 pair water-resistant gloves
  • Neck gaiter or scarf
  • Optional: long johns or leggings to wear under pants on extremely cold days

Business Travel Capsule Wardrobe

If your travel includes regular meetings, in person or online, consider adding the following to items your capsule wardrobe:

  • 2 collared dress shirts or blouses in wrinkle-resistant fabric (having two means you can rotate while one’s in the wash)
  • 2 professional bottom-half pieces, like wrinkle-resistant slacks or knee-length skirts
  • 1 travel blazer
  • 2 pairs of dress socks (if you’ll have in-person meetings)
  • 1 pair of comfortable dress shoes, pumps, or block-heeled sandals
  • Optional: 1 pair of earrings (think: simple studs or small hoops that will go with multiple outfits; don’t bring anything valuable)

Adventure Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Use this packing list if you plan to spend a lot of time in the great outdoors:

  • 3 t-shirts or tank tops in performance fabrics like merino wool
  • 1 packable puffer jacket or fleece (plus climate-specific gear if necessary)
  • 2 pairs wool hiking socks (yes, in addition to your other socks; you won’t want to spend the evening lounging in the same grimy socks you wore all day on the trail)
  • 2 sports bras (to rotate while one’s in the wash)
  • 1-2 pairs of athletic shorts
  • 1 pair of quick-drying travel pants
  • 1 pair of sturdy, closed-toe shoes like cross trainers, which are lightweight yet can handle rough terrain (if your trip includes serious trekking, consider clipping a pair of hiking boots to the outside of your pack)
  • 1 pair of water-friendly shoes (stick to shoes like Tevas , Keens , or Chacos , which offer much more stability than flip flops)
  • Baseball hat or visor for sun protection
  • Optional: 1 pair of jeans or other casual bottoms (to wear when not actively adventuring)
  • Optional: 1 pair of multi-use shoes for walking and casual everyday use (consider a supportive slip-on style that’s easy to don after a long day on your feet)

Depending on the weather at your destination, make two workout capsule wardrobes: one for cold weather and one for warm weather. Store one at your home base and swap it out when needed.

The Best Clothing for Travel Capsule Wardrobes

Remember that a good capsule wardrobe is made up of a small number of durable, classic pieces. No cheap throwaways. No fast fashion.

This wardrobe is an investment. If something costs more than you would usually pay, that’s okay, as long as it lasts longer and never goes out of style.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe T-Shirts

Merino wool is the ideal t-shirt fabric because it regulates your body temperature and repels odors. You can wear a merino shirt multiple times before needing to wash it.

Smartwool and Icebreaker are the most popular choices. We also like newer brands like Unbound Merino , Wool & Prince , and Outlier .

For non-wool t-shirts, check out brands like Everlane and Uniqlo .

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Jackets

Your choice of jacket completely depends on the weather in your destination and your travel style.

Rainy weather is easy. Most outdoor companies make thin, packable rain jackets . Multiple Tortuga recommend the Patagonia Torrentshell ( men’s , women’s ). L.L. Bean’s H2Off and Columbia’s Arcadia II are solid, affordable picks.

Temperate weather and city trips call for canvas, jean, or shirt jackets, which are easy to dress up or down. Just avoid anything too bulky.

Leather jackets look great with just about anything but are heavy. If you’ll wear yours every day (and thus never have to fit it in your bag), a leather moto can make a strong addition to your wardrobe.

For cold (but not frigid) weather or more outdoorsy destinations, go for a packable puffer that you can layer over a fleece or under a weather-proof shell.

Down insulation offers the best warmth to weight ratio. My Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket ( men’s , women’s ) kept me warm in actual Patagonia and smooshed into the size of a baseball in my backpack. Uniqlo’s Ultra Light Down Jacket ( men’s , women’s ) is a comparable budget option.

Because down doesn’t work well when wet, consider synthetic fill for drizzly destinations. Synthetic fibers dry faster than down and are also generally cheaper. Either way, stick to dark colors, which keep puffers looking sleek.

For very cold weather, invest in a hip- or knee-length water- and wind-resistant parka. While heavy, you can always stick your parka in the overhead bin during flights and leave it in your room when necessary.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Pants, Shorts, and Skirts

Jeans are some of the toughest, most versatile travel pants around. Just remember to wear them in transit as they’re big, bulky, and hard to pack. Go with your favorite style but avoid pairs with rips and distressing, as this makes them difficult to dress up.

Chinos are classics too. Our favorite travel chinos are from Bluffworks , but every brand from Gap to J. Crew to Banana Republic makes its own version. Find a pair that fits you well and isn’t too bulky.

Active brands like Athleta , Outdoor Voices , and Lululemon also offer a good selection of comfortable, travel-ready pants. Go for dark colors and no one will be able to tell that you’re wearing performance fabrics.

Athletic shorts are another versatile option on the road. They can be used at the gym, for outdoor adventures, as a substitute for pajamas, and as swim trunks.

Midi and maxi skirts are perfect for warm climates because they look fancy while also being comfortable, breezy, and modest.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Shoes

Unless all you’ll be doing is ordering piña coladas from a lounge chair, you’ll need more than a pair of flip-flops.

All travelers should invest in reliable, walkable travel shoes . Depending on the activity level of your trip, these can be loafers, ankle boots, cushioned flats, or even a pair of Birkenstocks .

Cole Haan is famous for its comfortable oxfords, with the packable ZERØGRAND line being particularly great for travel.

Sneakers are fine, but avoid pairs with loud colors or logos that will clash with the rest of your wardrobe. Brands like Thousandfell offer classic white tennis shoes in stain-resistant fabrics, while you can toss Allbirds’ Wool Runners ( men’s , women’s ) directly in the washing machine when your trip’s over.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Socks and Underwear

Choose any brand of underwear that looks good and feels comfortable but avoid cotton if you can. You need a fabric that will repel odors and dry quickly. We’re long-time fans of ExOfficio underwear. ExOfficio has a variety of styles for men or women that dry quickly, wick sweat, and repel odors.

For socks, we recommend Smartwool and Darn Tough . Both brands make wool socks that stay up and fit snugly. You can find both men’s and women ’s socks in every style from thick, calf-high hiking socks to thin, low-rise athletic socks.

A capsule wardrobe ensures that you’ll look great, no matter where your travels take you. You’ll also save time and money in shopping for, packing, and maintaining clothing in the long run.

Best of all, a capsule wardrobe reduces decision-making and eliminates stress from your packing list. That means you can get back to focusing on what matters: enjoying your trip.

How to create the perfect travel capsule wardrobe.

Take it from someone who has way too many clothes, I understand the struggle of trying to pack light . You want to be able to enjoy the journey, not be weighed down by your wardrobe.

With travelling, this becomes something of a necessity, as you can’t be lugging around an entire trunk of clothes for that one “just in case” moment.

I once took three separate washbags for a two-week holiday… you can judge me, it’s okay. After this moment, (and many others) I realised that no one needs that many toiletries and decided to strip down my luggage.

So, I’ve decided to share how to create the perfect travel capsule wardrobe with you. That way, you can make packing light look like a breeze.

This article is written by Faraway Lucy writer, Hope Titley.

Firstly, what is a capsule wardrobe?

clothes-hanging-from-hanging-rail-from-ceiling-in-white-minimalist-room-travel-capsule-wardrobe

The term ‘capsule wardrobe’ was coined by Susie Faux in the 1970s. A capsule wardrobe is usually fifty or fewer pieces, consisting of essential items of clothing.

These should be items that never go out of fashion, such as trousers, coats and skirts, but with seasonal interchangeable pieces thrown in for good measure.

So why is this such a good idea for travelling? Well, for one, you generally want to pack light. You will be carrying your luggage all over, and excess is not what you want.

By crafting your own travel capsule wardrobe that you can take with you, not only will travelling be easier, but you’ll never struggle to choose what to wear.

Crafting your wardrobe and making it work for travelling

minimalist-black-and-white-bedroom-with-clothes-rack-shelves-and-drawers

I know all too well the temptation to set out three different outfits for the same occasion just because you think they will look cool, without actually considering whether they will get any use.

I was forever returning from trips, pulling out items that I had completely forgotten that I had packed. (Sometimes, I still do.)

So here a few things that I have learnt to avoid doing this, to make your clothes work for you:

The first thing you will want to do is look at your travel plan. Are there particular occasions that may need a specific outfit? What’s the weather like? Will you be doing lots of different activities?

Once you have answered these questions, you can start to pick things out for the specifics. Try and build the outfit you will want to wear before you go, avoiding excess.

For example, if it’s an area where a lot of walking is involved, but you are planning on bar hopping in the evening, packing something like a comfortable pair of trainers that can double with jeans and a nice top is a safe bet.

Clothing in your travel capsule wardrobe

Now that you have the specifics sorted, you can start choosing which pieces you want to take for the rest of your trip.

Grab everything you think you want to take, then once you have an Everest of clothing, start to whittle down the pile from there by thinking about the following points:

1. Pick your basics well

Things like your favourite pair of jeans or a pair of white trainers will go with everything, making them the ideal thing to pack. (If they are suited to your holiday, of course!)

When it comes to picking the basics, you ideally want them to be in neutral tones so that you can mix and match everything.

Then you can build off these to choose the rest of the pieces you want from there.

2. Choose a colour palette

That being said, your clothing doesn’t need to be entirely neutral if that’s not your thing. If you are all about bright colours then go for it!

But by sticking to a particular colour palette you can be sure that your items will look good together, meaning you can mix and match pieces like a pro.

3. Where are you going?

This is something that you probably wouldn’t think about in too much depth. Beach = bikinis and snow = thermals, simple. But actually taking the time to consider where you are going can help you needle out the excess. Are you really going to need that strappy dress if you are headed on a ski trip to the Alps? (The answer is no.) One way to plan for this is to simply check the weather of the places you are headed to before you go. That way, you can be prepared for it all.

4. Will they be easy to care for?

This is especially important to consider if you are going away for a long time.

Easily wrinkled clothes, items that need special care in the wash or even pieces that are white/stain easily may be best left at home.

Not only this, but you want to take clothes that are well made. This way, you can get the most life out of them on your travels, without them breaking on you at a critical moment.

You want your wardrobe to last as long as you do.

5. Avoid buying new

I know it’s all too tempting to open up ASOS and start planning your new travel look, but before you do, delve into what you already own first.

For inspiration, look on Pinterest and make a board of the outfits you like and see what you can build from what you already own.

It might surprise you, making you look at your clothes differently. (Plus it will save you quite a bit of money, which you can then spend on the trip. You also avoid buying things you don’t need, just for the sake of having them.)

Of course, there will be some things that you don’t already have.

So when you do need to buy something new, pick an item that you really love. This way, it’s guaranteed to be worn throughout your travels and beyond.

Toiletries in your travel capsule wardrobe

eco-friendly-bamboo-toiletries-lying-on-marble-surface-toothbrush-cotton-buds-and-bar-of-soap

This is an area that, as I said at the very start, I struggle with.

For someone who has a four/five-step skincare routine, naturally wavy hair and likes to wear makeup, packing light in this area is a real struggle.

It’s taken some time, but here are a few things I do to take as little as possible:

1. Look into solid/packaging-free products

Shampoo bars, conditioner bars and solid soaps save so much space in your luggage, and they generally last a lot longer. Plus, they are pretty light, so avoid you lugging around excess weight.

Most of the time, you will be able to keep them all in a single container. Got to save all the space you can!

2. Try and use products for multiple purposes

For example, I use my bronzer and highlighter for eyeshadows, or my bar of soap to gel my brows. Doing this means you can take less, without sacrificing products entirely.

This applies to makeup brushes too. If you can get double-ended ones, you are onto a winner.

3. Cut back that routine

This is coming from me with my total skincare obsession.

But if you are travelling, consider what the items are that you truly need. You want to clean your skin, keep it nourished and protect it.

This means taking a good cleanser (which you can also find in solid form), moisturiser and an SPF, will be the essentials to keep you going.

If you wear a lot of makeup, you might want to add a good makeup remover. (Some things can be non-negotiable!)

Jewellery in your travel capsule wardrobe

gold-jewellery-on-white-surface-behind-plant-leaves

Whether you want to take your jewellery with you is down to personal preference.

If you’re going to pack jewellery, you need to carefully consider what you want to take.

How would you feel if a particular piece was lost?

This is a big one. If you take it only to leave it behind in your bag because you are worried about losing it, then maybe it should be left at home.

There’s nothing worse than realising your favourite necklace is gone.

Take pieces that go with everything

Look at the jewellery you wear every day as that is usually a good place to start.

Generally, a pair of gold/silver earrings, a necklace that is secure, and rings that fit will make you feel comfortable with wearing them out.

If you’re more of a statement kind of person, try and take only one or two pieces, ensuring they will be worn.

Get a safe place to store them

When you aren’t wearing them, you don’t want them to get lost in the depths of your bag.

Find a secure container to place them in, making them easy to find.

A proper jewellery travel case will keep them safe and avoid the tangled mess, but an old glasses case will work fine in a pinch! (My usual go-to.)

Packing your travel capsule wardrobe

open-suitcase-lying-on-floor-with-clothes-hat-and-camera-in-it-travel-capsule-wardrobe

When it actually comes to packing everything itself. There’s a lot of debate on the best ways to do it.

Should you fold or roll? Do you try and wear as much as you can to give yourself more space?

Whatever you think is the best way to pack, I’d like to offer a few suggestions of my own to help you out!

1. Roll or fold?

My answer? Why not both! Small and thin items roll particularly well, like underwear and camisoles, taking up way less room in your case.

Bulkier items like towels and jumpers, I’ve found are best folded, trying to get them as flat as possible.

Sometimes, you will need to just use your judgement for how you pack, but generally…

Roll:  Underwear, light tops, swimwear, socks, dresses, shorts, thin jumpers, skirts, leggings and thin denim pieces.

Fold: Towels, thicker jumpers, hoodies, coats (if you can’t wear them while you travel), joggers and thicker denim pieces.

2. Reusable items

One of my favourite sustainable travel tips is to bring eco-friendly travel products along for the ride.

However, packing your reusable water bottle or coffee cup can be bulky and take up unnecessary space.

Luckily, you can actually buy collapsible ones. So once you are done with them, you just squish them flat and slide them into your bag.

Helping the environment in a way that works for travelling is always a plus.

3. Light clothing

If you are going to take lighter coloured clothing, pack them inside out.

This way, if they happen to get a smidge of makeup on them, or maybe some dirt from your shoes, it should be hidden on the inside of your clothing.

You don’t want to unpack to realise that half of your clothes are already stained and not wearable.

As always, this is not a by the rules list. The best part about creating your travel capsule wardrobe is that it will be unique to you and your style aesthetic. Make it work for your personal taste !

With all this in mind, go and craft your perfect travel capsule wardrobe, that’ll be with you on all your adventures.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Sharing is caring!

This 14 piece Travel Capsule Wardrobe a complete packing list. Mix and match the clothing to create over 25 different outfits. Plus, you can easily fit all of these pieces of clothing and pairs of shoes in a carry on suitcase, and still have room for pajamas, a jacket, and other essentials.

Learn how to pack using a 14 item travel capsule wardrobe

I wanted to create a travel capsule wardrobe that is classically stylish, affordable and assembled out of items of clothing you probably have in your closet already. I am not a fashion blogger, but I am a master packer. I took only a carry on a 101-day journey around the world .

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe:

My travel capsule wardrobe is about packing less and not buying more. It’s about balancing practicality with being fashionable. It’s about investing in items that will stand the test of time, hold up against the wear and tear of travel, and outlast momentary trends. I shopped from my own closet to create this packing list, but I have linked to the same or similar items. I picked brands that I stand by. For example, my Madewell boots have stood up to impromptu hikes in Finland and days of walking 10 miles in Paris.

Slim Straight Trousers 13. Madewell Vintage Striped Tee 14. Madewell Whisper Cotton V-Neck Tank Shoes: Birdies Starling Flat , Madewell Regan Boot , Adidas Gazelle Sneaker

work travel capsule

The goal was to create something that will fit into your life and make traveling easier. The clothing and shoes included in my travel capsule wardrobe fit into a small carry on with a rain jacket, a bathing suit, 3 pairs of pajamas, along with two weeks of bras, underwear, and socks. There is even a little space left!

I really wanted to wear all the outfits. Anything looks good when you put it into a tidy collage. I wanted to show you that these outfits are wearable. Plus little nuances like how you tuck or tie a shirt, or layer items don’t translate into a collage.

14 Item Travel Capsule Wardrobe that fits in a carry on

The total weight of the packed suitcase is 24.2 pounds. You can lighten that load by wearing one of the outfits, or by wearing the sweater, the bulkiest item in the list. I figured you would wear the sneakers on your fight; that is the only item that I didn’t put in the suitcase. I didn’t even touch the personal item, use that to bring a purse, laptop, makeup, and other necessary items. That’s my strategy.

8C1A5111

I wanted to create outfits that reused each item 2-3 times without seeming too repetitive. In total, I created 30 outfits (you can see them all in the video). Use these ideas to take outfits from day to night, or to dress for a two-week trip. A few of the outfit changeups might seem a little too similar, but I wanted to give you options.

14 Items, 1 Carry On - this travel capsule wardrobe making packing easy!

I assembled this packing list with Fall in mind, but you could easily add in some floral prints for Spring. For Summer, swap out the sweater for a dress, swap a pair of pants for a pair of shorts, and swap some of the long sleeve shirts for tanks or tees. Replace the booties for sandals.

14 Items, 1 Carry On - this travel capsule wardrobe making packing easy!

The trick to making this travel capsule wardrobe work is to pack a mix of white and black basics with some more colorful pieces. When packing, colorful items can be any color. Keep the white and black items neutral that way you can mix and match just like I did. Happy packing!

I love the ideas for traveling but no one ever talks about all the other “stuff” that you have to bring-hair, cosmetics. Where does all that go?

Friday 9th of June 2023

I put all the other stuff in a backpack. That includes a laptop, camera, chargers, wallet, small bag of cosmetics, hair straightener, etc.

Love this! I just spent 8 days in Italy and packed very similarly - lots of pieces that did double duty between day/night and casual/dressed up. Feels so satisfying to actually wear everything you packed!

Thanks so much Carolyn! I totally agree - I feel such a sense of accomplishment when I wear/use everything that I packed for a trip!

Wear to Work Capsule Wardrobe

In today’s edition of Wear to Work, we’re answering a question from a reader about suits, suiting separates and creating a capsule that will travel well to a business conference.

Hello Megan, I appreciate your blog posts, particularly the focus on pulled-together office casual looks. I’m writing to suggest a blog post topic about finding a great suit for work travel. What details or cut makes the pieces look good as stand-alone separates as well as a sharp-looking suite? I’ve been looking for a suit that fits into my  conference travel packing formula: Day 1: suit jacket and dressy jeans en route (jacket doesn’t get wrinkled in my suitcase) Day 2: wear a suit for my killer presentation Day 3: suit pants + twin set A related topic that I’d love your advice on is navigating the items sold as “suit separates.” At Nordstrom Rack recently I tried “suit separates” that was hanging on the same rack by the same brand.  I was annoyed to find that the fabric and the colors were slightly different between jacket and pants – I was hoping for a mix and match option, but instead, they looked like I’d gotten dressed in the dark. This was true with both Anne Klein and  Calvin Klein. Disappointing! Do you have any hacks or workarounds for this? Thanks! Melissa Durham NC

Thank you for your question, Melissa!

First, let’s start with travel appropriate suiting.

Travel Suiting

For something to travel well it all comes down to the fabric. You want to avoid linen, linen blend and certain cotton blends. It’s best to look for four season wool, a wool blend, microfiber, poly blend and anything with some stretch.

I like this Anne Klein jacket and trouser , featured above, made in a poly-blend. Note the color is called “Anne Klein Black.” This tells us that these are meant to be worn together. More on this is a minute.

Hack: Pack your suit in your suitcase wrapped in a dry cleaning bag. It will arrive wrinkle free every time.

Next, let’s talk about mix and match suiting, because it’s a question I’ve been getting for years. I came up with a simple formula to follow when using a suit as a base for a capsule:

  • Mix and match suit pieces within a collection
  • Layer in separate jackets
  • Pair suiting bottoms with better tops and sweaters

I explain why in more detail below:

Suiting vs. Suiting Separates

Some suits are designed with true wardrobe building in mind. Brands like Lafayette 148, Hugo Boss and Theory offer a basic line of suiting that allows the consumer to purchase a few pieces each season.  You could pick up a skirt and jacket one season, then a pair of pants and a dress the next and the fabric and dye lot will be the same.

This, of course, comes at a cost. The fabric and process is expensive, but the quality is excellent. It’s a smart option for someone who spends their days in suits.

The most popular suits are in the mid range brands like J. Crew, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and Anne Klein, etc. Each season they create a few suiting capsules that you can buy and mix and match them within that collection.

Typically, you’ll see these hanging on a rack together. They will most likely not work with pieces you purchased in previous seasons, although there are a few exceptions.  But you can usually find a pant/skirt/dress/jacket combination that interchange nicely.

Shopping Tip: If you are at a discount retailer, like Nordstrom Rack or Off 5th, they hang garments by the same brand together, but those pieces might not have been designed to be worn together even if they look similar. Often they are from different collections and even seasons.

Suits by nature are formal which is why a suit jacket looks funny when paired with jeans or separate trousers. That’s why I recommend wearing your suit jacket exclusively with the bottoms for which it was made .

When traveling, you can easily wear the suit bottoms with different tops. Statement jackets, like the tweed blazer above , gives a suited look and complements the fabric of the pants.  You can also wear the pants with a blouse or knit for a business casual outfit.

But when you’re not traveling, try to keep the suit together so you don’t wear out the bottom faster than the jacket.

Creating a Capsule

In the image above I created an example of a travel work capsule using the suit as the bridge piece. For a capsule to work, keep it simple, and limit the use of colors. To add interest, focus on accessories and textures.

Anne Klein makes an affordable suit that will travel well and work for a variety of functions on your trip.

If you want to travel in jeans ( these are my go-to ), pair them with a separate blazer for a casual yet still professional look. If you needed something a little more formal, you could swap the jeans out for the suit pants .

For the day of your presentation, wear the full suit with a simple ivory shell  ( this is a similar but less expensive option)  and classic but modern jewelry. This bracelet and these earrings are gorgeous and pack a lot of style.

Finally for walking the convention floor and attending seminars, wear your suit pants with the same shell , and add a lightweight cardigan .

I hope this helps!

I had recently ordered from Nordstroms the Anne Klein jacket that you mentioned in this post and the "separates" pants that are advertised as part of the same collection. They are both called "Anne Klein Black" but the fabric and color do not match. Those are the separates that looked like I got dressed in the dark. Frustrating!

This was so helpful to me, Megan! And the funny thing is, I'm retired and never travel for business. But, what you answered for me was the question I've had for years: Why don't I ever wear the black blazer that I bought to wear as part of a suit and, I thought, to wear with jeans and more casual pants? Well, my casual lifestyle never requires a black suit but I'd often put the jacket on to top a jeans outfit and then I'd take it right off because it just looked wrong somehow. Now I know why! I'm going to get rid of the blazer and just keep the pants. (Or maybe the pants should go too since I don't often choose those either...). Anyway, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. I love reading your blog and seeing the outfits you put together.

Wednesday 13th of February 2019

Hi Mary! If the pants are flat front with clean lines def. keep them. Then, pick up a separate blazer to wear with jeans. I like this classic style by J crew, or this casual one by Vince Camuto.

I cannot see the post in Chrome, but am able to view it in Edge. Very strange - and I've never had this problem with your blog before today.

Patricia Hornbeck

Dear Megan, I am doing a trip to Athens and also a small boat cruise to the Greek Islands in May. I’ve been looking at suggested packing lists but there seems to be conflicts from the destinations being dressy casual to laid back casual. I am a very young 75 years old and some of the suggestions aren’t very appropriate for my age. The small cruise ship does not allow shorts, jeans or tees in the dinning room and I don’t want to be changing clothes several times a day. Any suggestions on how to put this together? Space in the cabin is limited and I usually travel with a 22” suitcase & a small tote carry on. Patricia

What a fun trip! We're going to Greece next year for my birthday and I'm so excited! I would focus on dress that can be layered and then use accessories to dress up or down. Without knowing your specifications I would look for something like this Eileen Fisher tank dress. You can sightsee in it with a comfortable pair of flats, or a walking shoe, then add layers. She does a great linen cardigan you could wear to cover your shoulders, or dress it up with an interesting wrap for dinner in the dinning room with a pair of heels.

Start to look for pieces in March, stores will have full spring inventory. Eileen Fisher will have the most mix and match options, so will Chico's. Both lines are versatile and very packable. Hope that helps!

Love the information, explanation, and rationale! Thank you!

I clicked thru from your email to read the post - nothing here!

I'm not sure what you mean. You can't see the post? Maybe refresh your browser, I don't see an issue on our end.

Great tips! I love all of these looks - especially the jeans and blazer look.

Thanks Tracey - glad it's helpful!

How to Build the Perfect Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobe

By Meaghan Kenny

A collage.

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

We've all been there: You're staring at a closet full of clothes and yet somehow have nothing to wear. And while you may be tempted to buy a whole new wardrobe in preparation for upcoming trips and pumpkin-themed outings, investing in a few key pieces can help spare you the need to splurge each season.

The key to building the perfect fall travel capsule wardrobe ? Finding versatile basics that can be worn with a variety of clothing pieces you already own. Investing in comfortable and timeless staples ensures you always have something to wear for every occasion, and can help trim down your packing list throughout the year (it's a more sustainable way of shopping, too). Instead of filling your carry-on with trendy items you might wear, start packing reliable essentials you are confident you'll put on again and again.

Below, we've rounded up the basic tees, packable jackets, and comfortable sneakers to help you build the ultimate capsule wardrobe for fall and beyond. Whether you're planning a New England getaway or a family glamping trip , these are the must-have pieces you'll keep reaching for.

Must-haves for a fall travel capsule wardrobe:

  • The basic tee
  • The long-sleeve shirt

The straight-leg jean

The trouser, the trench coat, the packable jacket, the denim jacket, the cozy cardigan, the oversized sweater, the white button-down, the versatile dress, the comfortable sneaker, the black boot, the wear-everywhere handbag, the perfect tee.

Let's start with a non-negotiable in every travel capsule wardrobe, fall included: the perfect tee. A plain T-shirt goes with every pair of bottoms you own—jeans, trousers, skirts, leggings, you name it—and can be dressed up or down. Find one you love in classic colors like white and black that you can toss in your suitcase on every trip year-round. (And maybe snag it in a few fall shades like gray or burgundy, too.)

work travel capsule

The long-sleeve

Another must-have on our list is a comfortable long-sleeve shirt. Layer your favorite sweaters, cardigans, and vests over a go-to long-sleeve for extra warmth. The best long sleeves can be worn as easily on a long-haul flight as they can to the office or out to dinner. We turn to Everlane, Buck Mason, Skims, and Aritzia for some of our favorite travel-friendly basics .

work travel capsule

Let's face it—you really only need one or two pair of jeans that you'll reach for weekly. A medium wash without any holes or rips is your best bet for a pair you can wear year-round and to just about any destination. A straight-leg jean is possibly the most versatile—this style can be worn with boots, sneakers, sandals, and even heels.

work travel capsule

For something more polished than jeans yet equally reliable, a pair of neutral-colored trousers is simply a must. Whether you're commuting to the office, heading on a business trip, or touring a new museum, a trouser is always a safe bet. Pair them with comfortable white sneakers if your itinerary calls for casual or loafers for a more sleek and put-together look.

work travel capsule

A light-colored, slightly oversized trench coat is possibly the most chic essential on our list. It's also one of the most classic—this water-resistant and lightweight coat isn't going out of style anytime soon. It offers an effortlessly put-together look and isn't too bulky to pack or too heavy to wear this season. It's that perfect in-between piece of outerwear for a day exploring New York City or London .

work travel capsule

As the temperature begins to drop this season, you'll need a warm yet packable jacket to throw on. Water-resistant jackets from Patagonia and Carhartt are ideal for rainy days, while puffers from Girlfriend Collective and Fjällräven provide extra insulation. These options aren't bulky or too heavy, making them smart choices worth the carry-on space.

work travel capsule

A denim jacket is a great transitional option that'll take you from summer to fall. Lightweight, versatile, and always in style, a jean jacket is a welcome addition to every traveler's packing list. Durable options from Madewell and J.Crew will last for years, making them well-worth the price tag.

A jean jacket.

What do you wear while reading a good book and sipping hot chocolate this season? A cozy cardigan is the only answer. There are a variety of styles, lengths, and materials to choose from—but the best cardigans all keep you warm and can be worn on a chilly plane, at home, or to dress up an otherwise simple outfit.

work travel capsule

An oversized sweater is practically synonymous with fall clothing. It's one of the easiest (and warmest) essentials you can wear once the temperature drops—throw one over a pair of leggings , jeans, or a long skirt. I never travel with at least one in my suitcase come fall, and it always ends up being one of my most-worn pieces.

work travel capsule

One versatile staple our editors agree we never travel without: a white button-down . This year-round essential deserves a spot in our suitcases no matter we're headed—it looks as great with a pair of jeans and loafers to the office as it does over a swimsuit on a beach vacation .

work travel capsule

Some occasions call for a slightly more elevated outfit. Comfort meets fashion with these versatile dresses—they're not restrictive or difficult to style and transition well through different seasons. For occasions that call for a slightly more elevated outfit, we gravitate toward simple yet flattering dresses like these from Everlane, H&M, and more.

work travel capsule

Chilly weather means it's time to retire your sandals and flip-flops and pull out a pair of loafers. They don't have much of a heel so they're easy to walk in, yet still look elevated with a pair of trousers. Plus, these lightweight shoes won't take up much suitcase space and can fit well in the shoe compartment of your weekender bag , too. We've got our eyes on Rothy's new lug loafer: an ultra-chic and lightweight slip-on with a chunky sole that is machine washable and is available in ivory (pictured), black, and teak herringbone (brown). (Browse more of our favorite loafers from Everlane, Franco Sarto, and Steve Madden.)

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, Shoe, and Suede

No packing list is complete without a comfortable walking shoe . Whether you're heading on a long flight or a city walking tour, every traveler needs a trusted pair of sneakers. Among our go-to kicks for long days on our feet are these neutral-colored options from Adidas, Veja, and New Balance. Wear them with quite literally everything—jeans, trousers, dresses, and more—to cut down your packing list and save your feet.

work travel capsule

A classic black boot is an easy way to dress up any fall outfit: It's more comfortable than a pump or other heel, but still looks sleek and elevated even with a simple pair of jeans. If you only have room to pack one extra shoe, I'd opt for a black boot that transitions well from day to night.

work travel capsule

Rounding out our list of essentials to build the perfect fall travel capsule wardrobe is a durable and stylish handbag you can wear anywhere with anything. We recommend a crossbody bag with an adjustable strap that can be worn multiple ways and in a shade that will match every outfit you're packing—brown or black is a smart choice.

Packing for a Trip? These Eco-Friendly Capsules Make Traveling With Toiletries ‘So Much Easier’

All products and services featured are independently chosen by editors. However, Billboard may receive a commission on orders placed through its retail links, and the retailer may receive certain auditable data for accounting purposes.

Traveling can raise your carbon footprint, but there are small steps that you can take to be more eco-friendly, starting with what you pack.

When it comes to finding the best travel essentials, reusable products are the way to go. If you’re like me and struggle with keeping your travel toiletries in one place, then you probably need a Capsule .

TikTok is buzzing with all kinds of travel products like the Capsule from Keep Your Cadence. Videos about Keep Your Cadence’s bestselling Capsule have received over 12 million views on TikTok and more than 2,000 customer reviews.

The refillable, magnetic, leakproof, waterproof and airtight Capsule “makes traveling so much easier,” according to one customer review. “Business trips are less stressful now,” the customer noted.

The ergonomically-designed Capsule is made from 20% recycled ocean-bound plastic and 30% “excess manufacturing materials” according to the company’s website.

Each Capsule holds 0.56 ounces giving you enough room for serums, toners , cleansers and other skincare products , shampoos, conditioners , supplements, cotton rounds and more. The Capsule can hold up to 10 uses of oil cleansers making them useful for a weekend getaway and maybe longer trips of up to a week.

The Capsule is available in several different colors including eucalyptus green, lavender, charcoal, terracotta and petal pink. You can also customize the color, magnetic top and labels.

The Capsule retails for $14, but the six-piece set is currently on sale for $74, which might seem like a lot to spend on travel products, but they’re more durable than some of the cheaper options that you’d find at retailers like Target , Walmart or Amazon that won’t last as long and aren’t as easy to clean, so you’ll probably end up throwing them away and buying replacements. Plus, the Capsule is sustainable.

“They work like a charm,” reads one customer review . “Exactly what I need to travel,” writes another.

“I am someone who travels a lot and contemplated this purchase for a long time as I was content with filling my old travel bottles,” reads another review. “However, I am extremely pleased with my purchase. These are compact, fit much better in my travel bags, and are so much easier to refill. Very pleased with my purchase!”

Customers were also surprised by the size as one reviewer wrote, “This fits way more product than I thought they would and pack easily. Glad I finally went for it! Now I want more!”

Keep Your Cadence offers larger Capsule sets including the Build a System Bundle ($98) and The Bestsellers Bundle ($132) .

Packing for a Trip? These Eco-Friendly Capsules Make Traveling With Toiletries ‘So Much Easier’

WestJet Airlines begins 'cancelling flights and parking aircraft' as strike looms

Canada's WestJet Airlines has begun cancelling flights  again after a union representing its maintenance engineers rejected a new pay offer and served a second strike notice, the carrier said on Wednesday.

WestJet said this action would lead to an estimated 25 flight cancellations  from June 27-28 and impact over 3,300 travellers. The airline had earlier in the day said that the work stoppage could occur as soon as June 28.

It is not clear how long the strike could go on for.

WestJet, which is backed by Onex Corp and competes with Air Canada, has been facing demands from employees for better working conditions and higher salaries.

No justice, no pea(nuts): How airline labor deals impact you | Cruising Altitude

WestJet said it presented the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) with a "Canadian industry-leading agreement," which was better than the previous agreement that was rejected by the union earlier in the day.

The offer that was rejected had presented aircraft maintenance engineers with a 22% pay increase over four years.

AMFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"It is especially devastating that the strike notice we have received from AMFA forces us to begin cancelling flights and parking aircraft, for the second time in just over a week," said Diederik Pen, president of WestJet Airlines and group chief operating officer.

The Calgary-based airline, which also serves destinations across the U.S. , last week canceled 40 flights that affected 6,500 customers after it was sent a 72-hour strike notice by the union. The union withdrew the strike notice on June 20 and agreed to return to discussions.

What Is Induction Cooking and How Does It Work?

work travel capsule

Induction cooking has been around for decades, but in the last few years it’s gained popularity among chefs and home cooks alike as an alternative to the gas stoves that have reigned supreme for decades. You can chalk its popularity up to a combination of factors: government mandates to electrify newly constructed home kitchens and recent scientific studies published about emissions from gas stoves posing health risks . Induction burners , which are powered by electricity but function differently than a classic coil-style electric stove, can heat faster and more efficiently than other kinds of stoves, making them an appealing option.

What is induction cooking?

As soon as it’s turned on, an induction burner sets up an electromagnetic field between the burner and the pan it’s in contact with, creating eddy currents, or swirling electrical currents, in the metal of the pan (as long as that pan is magnetic), and the resistance of the metal to those currents in turn creates heat throughout the pan and all at once. (Gas and conventional electric burners apply heat to the surface of the pan, which then requires more time to spread to the rest of the pan.)

What are the benefits of induction cooking?

According to Ari Matusiak, founder and CEO of Rewiring America, the largest pro-electrification nonprofit in the United States, a gas stove transfers only about 40 percent of its heat energy to a piece of cookware. A traditional electric coil stove transfers about 74 percent, while induction stoves transfer closer to 90 percent of their electrical energy. The result is that cookware heats as much as three times faster than electric or gas.

Induction also offers more precision, with the ability to heat cookware to a specific temperature or make adjustments with a much faster response time. That precision is something Thomas McNaughton, co-chef of Flour + Water Hospitality Group, appreciates: “Like when we’re making ricotta, we know that the milk absolutely will not boil over because we’re able to set it to cook to an exact temperature.” McNaughton and his co-chef Ryan Pollnow like induction cooking so much that they’re in the process of moving toward all-induction cooktops in their forthcoming pizza shops.

Air quality is both an environmental and safety advantage when it comes to induction, especially as compared to gas stoves. Matusiak cited several recent studies that have shown that indoor cooking with gas has comparable health effects to secondhand smoke and increases chances of childhood asthma . Gas cooking releases a chemical called benzene which is linked to leukemia and other types of cancers. Improving indoor air quality is a major motivation in the legislation aimed at moving toward induction.

There are additional safety advantages. Induction cooktops only work when there’s a pot or pan on the unit; and even with a pan on it, the glass or ceramic top doesn’t get as hot as a gas or electric-coil burner. They’re also hard to turn on accidentally, and you don’t have to worry about any open flames.

These concerns, both environmental and for their staff, have informed McNaughton and Pollnow’s move toward induction. They’re in the process of pursuing B Corp Certification, which takes into consideration their environmental footprint. Using induction allows them to significantly reduce their restaurant’s energy usage.

Induction also stands apart in terms of cleanup. Their flat glass or ceramic surface makes them easy to wipe down, and even when something boils over or spills, it won’t scorch on the cooktop because the surface doesn’t get hot enough to burn it.

What are the drawbacks of induction cooking?

You may have heard that not all pans work with induction, and that’s because for this transfer of energy to occur, the pan must be magnetic. That means that some pans, especially aluminum and some stainless-steel pans, cannot be used on induction. The good news, though, is that cast-iron pans , carbon-steel pans, and enamel cast iron are all ideal for induction. It’s okay to use pans that are larger than the induction burner, but like a large pan set over a smaller electric or gas burner, they’ll only heat up right where they’re in contact with the burner.

For tasks like finishing pasta that require lots of movement of a pan, induction can pose a problem. While gas can offer ambient heat when a pan is lifted off the burner, induction requires full contact for the electromagnetic currents to move heat, meaning that lots of lifting and moving of the pan can interrupt the cooking process. Induction also requires electricity, which means that it will not work during power outages.

The author using the LYMA Laser

Summer vacation season is heating up, and this tiny but mighty skincare tool might be the next best thing to traveling with your own personal dermatologist.

Billed as “the world’s most powerful at-home beauty device,” the FDA-cleared LYMA Laser uses low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to reach the deepest layers of the skin, triggering cell regeneration and addressing redness, pigmentation, scars, blemishes and signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles along the way.

“It’s not like traditional lasers that are used to heat up tissue to stimulate collagen production,” LYMA founder Lucy Goff previously told The Post of the tech.

“It’s not damaging any cells whatsoever. Fundamentally, what you’re doing is switching on more and more cells that naturally died off as part of the aging process.”

LYMA Laser

Because it’s completely painless and calls for zero downtime, you might assume this buzzy gadget’s all gas — but since its 2022 launch, the LYMA Laser has become a favorite of celebrities and Hollywood facialists like Joanna Czech, who used it to prep her clients for this year’s Met Gala .

Superstar makeup artist Pati Dubroff, who works with A-listers like Margot Robbie and Sofia Richie, has even dubbed it “the breakthrough beauty device of the decade,” raving, “I use it on clients’ skin before makeup and it massively reduces inflammation, erases under-eye bags and gives the face a fabulous glow.”

The only downsides? In addition to being quite the investment at $2,695, this high-tech handheld tool requires a considerable time commitment; LYMA recommends using it for at least 15 minutes per day for 90 days at first, after which you can move into “maintenance mode” and use it two to three times each week.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by LYMA (@lymalife)

I’m still well within that initial 90-day window, which means I need to squeeze in daily sessions with my LYMA Laser.

Fortunately, it’s roughly the size, shape and weight of a small flashlight, making it perfectly portable and easy to slip into any backpack or carry-on when it’s time to travel. (I recently brought mine along for a long weekend in Boston, and used it while unwinding at my hotel with a little Netflix at the end of each day.)

While the brand recommends using the LYMA Oxygen Mist and Glide included in its Starter Kit to prep the skin before use, you can also incorporate the skincare products of your choice. I’ve been subbing in my favorite serum and moisturizer, and they seem to be doing the trick.

Open suitcase

Once your complexion’s all lubed up, simply glide the LYMA Laser over your skin in slow, steady movements until you’ve covered the entirety of your face, neck and chest; you can even use it on the backs of your hands and any body scars you’d like to treat.

For any areas of particular concern (stubborn lines, pigmentation, texture, etc.), I like to hold the device in place for three minutes for a more targeted treatment, as recommended by the helpful tutorials on LYMA’s website .

I was initially drawn to the at-home laser in hopes that it might smooth the texture of some residual acne scarring on my cheeks, and while I’ll need to continue my regimen beyond a couple of weeks to see those kinds of results, I’ve already noticed a slight reduction in redness since starting, which is encouraging.

Before and after skincare photos

And The Post’s Holly Coley, who’s been using her LYMA for months , tells me she’s obsessed with the tool.

“I started using the LYMA Laser in January and it has been a consistent part of my routine since,” she tells me. “I won’t lie, it’s a time commitment. However, I’ve seen an improvement in my skin’s laxity and texture, which makes the effort worth it for me. I’ve also seen improvement with my neck lines, which is impressive. I love the cordless design and the fact I don’t need to charge it often.”

As with any skincare routine, consistency is key — and I’m excited to continue using the LYMA Laser, no matter where this summer takes me.
