1. A Short Trip Home Synopsis

“A Short Trip Home” by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a captivating short story that delves into the mysteries of the past and the complexities of human connections. The narrative follows the protagonist’s quest to uncover information about a man named Joe Varland. Through a visit to a billiard parlor, the protagonist learns about Varland’s shady past involving exploiting women on trains. Fitzgerald’s masterful storytelling skillfully weaves together themes of nostalgia, curiosity, and the allure of secrets.

The story also explores the narrator’s evolving relationship with Ellen, hinting at a hopeful future despite uncertainties. With his signature prose, Fitzgerald paints a vivid picture of both characters and settings, immersing readers in a world of intrigue and emotion. “A Short Trip Home” offers a brief yet thought-provoking glimpse into the human desire to understand the past and the profound impact it can have on our perceptions of the present and future.

2. Story Summary

The narrator is infatuated with Ellen, noticing her blossoming beauty and confident aura. During a party, Ellen receives a note and leaves with a distracted expression. Joe Jelke, who’s enamored by Ellen, becomes worried about her absence. They later find Ellen with a mysterious man in a car. Joe confronts the man, and a scuffle ensues, resulting in Joe getting injured. Ellen’s reaction surprises the narrator as she seems indifferent and later defends the man’s actions.

The narrator is drawn to Ellen’s beauty and charm, feeling conflicted by her behavior and the danger the mysterious man poses. The party continues, but the narrator feels an unsettling shift in perception, watching Ellen with a sense of foreboding.

The narrator becomes concerned about Ellen’s well-being and tries to intervene in her interactions with this mysterious man. The man’s intentions and influence are unclear, and the narrator’s attempts to protect Ellen lead to a confrontation between the two.

The narrator returns home for Easter vacation and visits a billiard parlor to inquire about a man named Joe Varland. He describes Varland to the cashier, who informs him that Varland has died. The narrator wants to learn about Varland’s habits and offers money to a man named Shorty, who reluctantly shares that Varland used to exploit women traveling alone on trains for money. The narrator leaves, pondering this information. He mentions his relationship with Ellen, how they’re close, and that she’ll be coming out in the fall. The narrator feels more hopeful about their future together.

About the author

F. scott fitzgerald.

F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in 1896 in St Paul, Minnesota, and went to Princeton University which he left in 1917 to join the army. Fitzgerald was said to have epitomised the Jazz Age, an age inhabited by a generation he defined as 'grown up to find all Gods dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken'.

In 1920 he married Zelda Sayre. Their destructive relationship and her subsequent mental breakdowns became a major influence on his writing. Among his publications were five novels, This Side of Paradise, The Great Gatsby, The Beautiful and Damned, Tender is the Night and The Love of the Last Tycoon (his last and unfinished work): six volumes of short stories and The Crack-Up, a selection of autobiographical pieces.

Fitzgerald died suddenly in 1940. After his death The New York Times said of him that 'He was better than he knew, for in fact and in the literary sense he invented a "generation" ... he might have interpreted them and even guided them, as in their middle years they saw a different and nobler freedom threatened with destruction.'

a short trip home resumen

( A Short Trip Home )

relato aparecido en la revista Saturday Evening Post (diciembre 1927)

Francis Scott Fitzgerald

(Cuentos 1 – pp. 777 a 811)

» It was snowing, I said, and it was four o’clock on a December afternoon, when there is a promise of darkness in the air and the street lamps are just going on.  I passed a combination pool parlor and restaurant, with a stove loaded with hot-dogs in the window… «

Metal Noise

Review: “a short trip home” by nonvector.

After 14 years in the wilderness, Crimson Massacre guitarist James Jackson created Nonvector with bassist James Duvall and Pianist Vince Patillo in order to create some Progressive music with both Metal and Rock leanings. Getting drummer Kevin Talley, known for his work in many heavy Metal bands including Dååth, Feared, Sylencer and Nothnegal, Dying Fetus, Misery Index, Six Feet Under, Chimaira, Suffocation and Battlecross onboard, they set about creating “ A Short Trip Home ” after being inspired by the F. Scott Fitzgerald story of the same title.

Surpassing the seventeen minute mark with a single instrumental track is the path they chose and it’s sheer brilliance is something that on paper could be hard to comprehend. Constantly shifting sands of texture and tempo create an ever changing the scenery soundscape that is breathtaking. Little pieces of Metal and Progressive Rock appear in short bursts of energy as they appear like solar flares that melt seamlessly together like butter into freshly baked bread. There is light and shade with contrasting moments as each musician adds their own parts to make the final composition greater than the sum of it’s parts as it flows like a river to the sea. At times it’s mesmerising, at times smooth Jazz inspired and as it fades out, Talley’s double kick work leaves you wanting more because as the 17 minutes reaches its finale, it’s hard to believe that 17 minutes has passed by. That should tell you all you need to know about this record. It doesn’t have the fun of  Navian or sunshine of Chon but instead occupies similar territory to the new Intronaut record and is beautiful in its own right [8.5/10]

A Short Trip Home

Publisher description.

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (September 24, 1896 – December 21, 1940) was an American author of novels and short stories, whose works are the paradigmatic writings of the Jazz Age. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Fitzgerald is considered a member of the "Lost Generation" of the 1920s. He finished four novels: "This Side of Paradise", "The Beautiful and Damned", "The Great Gatsby" (his most famous), and "Tender Is the Night". A fifth, unfinished novel, "The Love of the Last Tycoon", was published posthumously. Fitzgerald also wrote many short stories that treat themes of youth and promise along with age and despair. Fitzgerald's work has been adapted into films many times. His short story, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", was the basis for a 2008 film. "Tender Is the Night" was filmed in 1962, and made into a television miniseries in 1985. "The Beautiful and Damned" was filmed in 1922 and 2010. "The Great Gatsby" has been the basis for numerous films of the same name, spanning nearly 90 years: 1926, 1949, 1974, 2000, and 2013 adaptations. In addition, Fitzgerald's own life from 1937 to 1940 was dramatized in 1958 in "Beloved Infidel".

Maximize your short trip with these expert tips

Ever feel the rush of wanting to explore a new destination, but time isn’t on your side? Don’t fret! Even the shortest trips can be filled with unforgettable experiences and adventures. The trick lies in planning smartly and prioritizing your interests. So, let’s dive in and unravel the secrets to making the most of your short trip.

  • Plan ahead and prioritize your interests
  • Embrace the trend of Microcations
  • Make use of local insights and experiences
  • Stay flexible and open to unexpected adventures
  • Travel at off-peak hours and use efficient transport modes

Planning is Key

When time is scarce, having a clear plan can be your best friend. Make a list of top things you want to see or do, and plan your itinerary around them. But remember to keep it flexible; after all, the best travel stories often come from unexpected detours!

Embrace the Trend of Microcations

Microcations, or vacations lasting less than five days, are gaining popularity among millennials and Gen Z travelers. These bite-sized adventures allow you to explore new places without having to take much time off. So pack your bags , embrace the trend, and let the adventure begin!

Make Use of Local Insights

Getting tips from locals can enhance your trip significantly. They know the best places to eat, interesting sights off the beaten path, and can help you avoid tourist traps. So strike up a conversation with locals and see what hidden gems you can discover.

Travel Smart

Choosing the right mode of transport can save you precious time. Look for direct flights, travel at off-peak hours to avoid traffic, and consider using public transport or bikes to explore the city.

Stay Open to Adventures

Remember that every short trip is an adventure waiting to unfold. As the award-winning actress and seasoned traveler Shirley MacLaine once said, “The more I traveled, the more I realized that fear makes strangers of people who should be friends.” So be brave, be curious, and let the magic of travel transform strangers into friends.

Start Your Day Early

Maximizing your day means taking advantage of early morning hours. The benefits are two-fold: popular attractions are usually less crowded and you have more daylight hours for exploration. Early starts might require a good coffee, but the memories you create will be worth the effort.

Blend In With The Locals

Beyond tourist sights, local life provides a vibrant cultural tapestry that adds depth to your travel experiences. Attend a local market, try the regional cuisine, or participate in local traditions to make your short trip memorable. Immersing yourself in local life is the difference between observing a culture and living it.

Utilize Technology

Travel apps and technology can be a lifesaver on short trips. Use GPS for easy navigation, travel apps for public transport schedules, online reviews to choose restaurants, and digital museum guides for self-guided tours. Technology not only simplifies travel but also helps in discovering lesser-known attractions.

Travel Light

With a short trip, the last thing you want is to be burdened by heavy luggage. Carry only essentials, consider versatile clothing, and remember that less is more when it comes to packing. Travelling light allows for more mobility and less stress about belongings.

Even the shortest trip can be filled with unforgettable experiences. It’s all about smart planning, embracing new trends, taking local insights, and being open to adventures. So next time you’re planning a short trip, keep these tips in mind and get ready to make the most of every moment!

Kevin, your missive hit home for me! As a screenplay writer laboring at cafes like the firestarter roasters, home-industry appearances knocked insights left and right in my journey too. Did you ever feel like creativity is frisk-alert around urban art deco? ✔️ from me! Battleship synergy for brainstorming, anyone? Curious though –– ever tried redesigning chaos, vernacular twists, maybe more old typewriter vibes into the pattern narrations? Switch of peripherals? Bangarang to provincial tropes!
