Trip Killers: How To Stop an Acid Trip

Occasionally, a psychedelic trip can take a turn for the worse. This group of “trip killer” drugs are used by experienced trip sitters and medical professionals to stop the trip in its tracks.

acid trip kopen

What Are Trip Killers?

1. alprazolam (xanax), 2. lorazepam (ativan), 3. diazepam (valium), 4. clonazepam (klonopin), 5. zolpidem (ambien), 6. quetiapine (seroquel), 7. olanzapine (zyprexa) , how long do trip killers take to kick in, psychedelics that have trip killers, psychedelics that don’t have trip killers, 1. are you in over your head, 2. are you or those around you at risk, 3. do you need to sober up asap, who shouldn’t use benzodiazepine-based trip killers, 1. the “bad trip”, 2. you or your trip sitter realize it’s time for a trip killer, 3. you enter “the placebo effect”, 4. the trip killer begins to take effect, 5. the trip comes to an end  , 6. you feel almost sober, 1. sourcing the trip killers responsibly, 2. get the dose right, set (mindset), final word: using trip killers .

In most cases, “a bad trip” is just your mind’s way of showing you factors in your past or present life that need to be confronted and dealt with. However, in some cases, a bad trip can become nightmarish to the point that it may put yourself or others in danger.

In these situations, it may be beneficial to have some form of a trip killer on hand to get you out of the negative headspace and effectively “kill” the trip.

Let’s delve into what trip killers are, when to use them, explore the risks, and discuss what to expect when you use one halfway through a psychedelic journey.

Trip killers are substances that help mellow out or block the effects of psychedelic substances. They “bring you back to reality” when a trip takes a dark turn.

Trip killers are taken with the intent to end a psychedelic trip. There is no one substance that will help end a psychedelic experience, and not all trip killers are effective for all psychedelics — you have to use the right trip killer depending on what substance you’re using.

The most common trip killers are benzodiazepines, but other drugs, such as certain antipsychotic medications, can also be effective.

Just as it’s important to know the right dose of the psychedelic you’re using, it’s important to take the right dose of trip killers too. Some of these substances are exceptionally potent and should be taken with great care.

Trip killers are a last resort and should only be used when the effects of a bad trip start to become dangerous to oneself or others.

Ideally, people who are at risk of such an experience will be under the supervision of a trained psychedelic facilitator who can help walk the user through the challenging visions they may be receiving. In many cases, the bad trips are where most of the benefits of psychedelics derive from — so stopping them in their tracks should be avoided if possible.

Top 7 Trip Killers

By far, the most effective and commonly used trip killers are benzodiazepine drugs . We’ll look at these substances first because they offer the strongest and fastest-acting way to end a psychedelic experience.

Benzodiazepines aren’t for everyone; some people should avoid them entirely. In these cases, there are other options available (keep reading).

It’s important to note that benzodiazepines can be dangerous, especially if mixed with other sedative drugs or alcohol. They’re also notoriously addictive. Taking benzos habitually doesn’t end well for anybody.

For now, let’s take a look at the most common trip killers:

acid trip kopen

Alprazolam is one of the fastest-acting trip killers in the benzodiazepine family — but it’s also one of the shortest-lasting. The effects of Xanax, although fast-acting, only last for around four to six hours.

Xanax is a favored trip killer among psychonauts purely because of its fast-acting nature. It’s designed for people to use at the first sign of an anxiety attack to stop it in its tracks.

The effects of alprazolam start to kick in within 15 minutes or so and reach peak effects in as little as 45 minutes.

Xanax does have a habit of wiping your memory, in a sense. When consumed with other substances or at too high a dose, it can make you black out and lose all memory of the previous night.

When you consume Xanax as a trip killer, you should be prepared to lie down and get some rest. When you awake, you may have an extremely blurry memory and struggle to recall anything about the experience. This can be a positive or negative point, depending on what you want to achieve from the psychedelic trip.

acid trip kopen

Lorazepam is considered an intermediate-acting benzodiazepine. This means it won’t kick in quite as fast as something like Xanax — but the effects last for over eight hours. This is a better option for long-lasting psychedelics, such as DOX compounds, 2CX compounds , or other amphetamine psychedelics .

Lorazepam is great for getting you out of a bad trip, but it may cause drowsiness to the point you fall asleep. This can be a plus since it allows you to rest easy after a bad experience, but it does put a complete halt on your psychedelic experience.

acid trip kopen

Diazepam isn’t as fast-acting as lorazepam and alprazolam, but it is one of the longest-lasting of the popular benzodiazepine trip killers. The effects of diazepam can last for over 12 hours.

It’s reported that this trip killer takes “too long” to take effect when swallowed in pill form. However, the onset of effects can be sped up significantly by chewing the drug, so it can be sublingually absorbed under the tongue.

Diazepam works great to get you out of a nightmarish thought loop, but it doesn’t have the same effect as lorazepam and alprazolam in the aspect of drowsiness. Many people report that taking diazepam during a bad trip helps them calm down without completely removing the psychedelic effects of the drug.

acid trip kopen

Clonazepam is considered the slowest-acting of the benzodiazepine trip killers. It can take between one and four hours after taking it to reach peak levels in the blood. Of course, this can be sped up by chewing the pill and allowing it to absorb sublingually.

Although clonazepam takes a long time to kick in, the effects can last up to 12 hours, and the half-life is also long, standing at around 40 hours — meaning it won’t be cleared from the body for a couple of days.

This is the least popular of the common benzodiazepine trip killers, but it’s often one of the easiest to get hold of (depending on where you live). Some like Klonopin for its euphoric nature, which many other benzodiazepines don’t have.

acid trip kopen

Zolpidem is classified as a Z-drug — which is a group of compounds that exert benzodiazepine-like effects but have an entirely different structure.

These drugs work in much the same way as benzos and are also considered useful as trip killers. But there’s one catch — these drugs tend to be much more sedative than their benzodiazepine cousins. People who take Ambien to stop a trip will almost always fall asleep shortly after. You may or may not remember the experience the following morning.

While Z-drugs carry a lower risk than most benzodiazepines, there’s still a great deal of risk associated with their use. Getting the dose right, avoiding mixing with other depressants, and only using if you’ve been approved by a doctor are still key elements for using these substances safely.

Although nowhere near as popular as benzos, another common option is antipsychotics like quetiapine (Seroquel).

Antipsychotic medications treat psychosis. People with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe depression, and Alzheimer’s are often prescribed these.

Quetiapine is classified as an atypical antipsychotic. It differs from typical antipsychotics because it produces fewer extrapyramidal symptoms and has a lower risk of tardive dyskinesia. In simpler terms, it produces fewer side effects than typical antipsychotics, such as the inability to sit still, muscle contractions, tremors, and stiff muscles.

Antipsychotics are the best trip killers for people that can’t use benzodiazepines or Z-drugs.

Seroquel typically takes 20 to 60 minutes to kick in when consumed sublingually at a dose of around 25–50 mg.

Olanzapine is another atypical antipsychotic reported to be effective in dulling the effects of psychedelics. This compound has a particularly high affinity for the 5HT2A receptor and is, therefore, better for killing the trips from tryptamine-based psychedelics like LSD, psilocybin, or DMT.

Zyprexa is less effective for dopaminergic or NMDA-based psychedelics such as the psychedelic amphetamines (MDMA, MDA, cathinones) or arylcyclohexylamines (PCP, ketamine, and others).

Olanzapine usually takes around 30 minutes to kick in at a 10–20 mg dose.

How Do Trip Killers Work?

Benzodiazepines such as diazepam or lorazepam (or other sedative anxiolytics) are usually the substances a doctor will administer if you’re submitted to the hospital due to signs of psychosis from consuming too much of a psychedelic substance.

These drugs work similarly to those for someone with a panic or anxiety attack. They have anxiolytic, sedative, and relaxant properties that all work to reduce anxiety levels and negative thought loops.

More specifically, benzodiazepines kill the trip by amplifying the activity of GABA in the brain. GABA is a neuroinhibitor — which means it reduces brain activity.

When we’re anxious, the inhibitory effects of GABA result in a dramatic reduction in anxiety levels. We think less, care less about our problems and feel more calm and relaxed. In higher doses, this causes full-on sedation.

The same concepts apply to psychedelic experiences. Paranoia, anxiety, and fear responses experienced during the psychedelic state can all be muted by dulling brain activity with GABA-boosting drugs.

acid trip kopen

Antipsychotic trip killers work a little bit differently. These drugs work as serotonin and dopamine antagonists (blockers). The exact mechanism is still not fully understood, but the leading theory is that certain antipsychotics reverse the effects of psychedelics by blocking the 5-HT2A receptors.

5-HT2A is one of the main receptor sites on which psychedelics such as LSD and psilocybin work. Some, but not all, psychedelic substances bind to these receptors to induce their psychedelic effects.

Every trip killer is different — some kick in quickly (10–20 minutes); others take an hour or more.

Here are some of the average onset times for the four most popular benzo-based trip killers listed above.

These refer to the oral onset time of these drugs. It’s not a good idea to smoke, inject, or snort benzodiazepines for any reason.

  • Alprazolam (Xanax): 10–20 minutes
  • Lorazepam (Ativan): 20–45 minutes
  • Diazepam (Valium): 1–2 hours
  • Clonazepam (Klonopin): 45–60 minutes

When Do Trip Killers NOT Work?

Trip killers don’t work on every psychedelic substance. Benzodiazepines and antipsychotic medications are effective for standard, serotonin-based psychedelics such as LSD and psilocybin. However, there are a few substances that don’t have any effective trip killers.

Always educate yourself on any substance before using it. You should know how much to take, what to expect during the trip, and onset times and duration. You should also know whether there’s an effective trip killer for it.

Psychedelic trips from some of the most commonly used psychedelics can be stopped by the use of benzodiazepines or antipsychotic medications.

These are the most prevalently used and have the most research surrounding them, though trip killers likely work on more substances than the ones listed below.

Here’s a list of commonly used psychedelic substances that do have effective trip killers:

  • LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) (and other lysergamide psychedelics )
  • Psilocybin (the active compound in magic mushrooms )
  • 4-AcO-DMT (synthetic shrooms)
  • 5-MeO-DMT (the active compound in bufo toad venom )
  • N,N-DMT (the active ingredient in ayahuasca )
  • 2C-B (and other 2C psychedelics )
  • NBOMes (N-bombs)
  • Synthetic Cathinones (Bath Salts)
  • MDMA (and other MDXX psychedelics )
  • Mescaline (the active compound in Peyote & San Pedro cactus)

Some psychedelic substances do not have trip killers. Not all psychedelics affect the brain in the same way; therefore, trip killers, such as benzodiazepines, will not end all psychedelic experiences.

For example, many dissociative drugs like PCP or ketamine work via the NMDA receptors in the brain. The psychedelic trips these drugs produce appear to be unaffected by benzodiazepines. Making matters worse, most dissociatives are also considered sedatives — which are notoriously dangerous to mix with benzodiazepines.

Other substances, such as salvinorin A from salvia or any of the deliriant hallucinogenics, don’t diminish after taking benzodiazepines or Z-drugs. There are no effective trip killers for these substances.

If you plan on consuming any of the substances listed below, be warned that you have no option but to ride the experience out naturally. Never consume a substance that you’re not comfortable with.

It’s a good idea to have a trip sitter around that you trust who can help you through a difficult experience should it arise.

Here are some of the more common psychedelic substances that do not have effective trip killers:

  • Datura (a hallucinogenic flower from the nightshade family)
  • Brugmansia (commonly known as angel’s trumpet)
  • Phencyclidine (and other arylcyclohexylamines )
  • Ketamine (and other dissociatives )
  • Grayanotoxins (found in Rhododendron flowers)
  • Xenon gas or nitrous oxide gas
  • Salvia divinorum

When Should You Use a Trip Killer?

Preferably, you should never consume a trip killer. A “bad trip” can often unlock a door that will show you traits in our personality (our “ shadow ”) or traumas and aspects in life that we need to heal in order to live a better life.

A typical “bad trip” is often a lesson containing vital information we can use to work on ourselves and get over mental blocks that reduce our quality of life. Using a trip killer to end an experience like this may be counterintuitive. Doing so could close “the door” that leads to healing.

Many experienced psychonauts swear off ever needing to consume trip killers to end a trip because they believe every vision has value. However, trip killers definitely have their place. You should always be safe rather than sorry and never bite off more than you can chew in terms of set, setting, and dosage. End the trip if you feel you’re in over your head.

As long as you use psychedelics responsibly , you’ll likely never need a trip killer. Proper dosing is the best way to ensure this, but having your frame of mind and setting fit for a psychedelic trip is also important. This way, if a bad trip occurs, you have the strength to deal with it.

Sometimes, we don’t get it right. A “bad trip” can spiral out of control into a nightmarish event that can be truly traumatic. When this happens, you and the others around you could be at risk.

People who swear off trip killers may have experienced a challenging trip but may not have had a truly terrifying one. It may never happen, but it could occur at any time, so it’s always wise to have some form of trip killer available.

A nightmarish loop of events during a trip can seem to last forever, and in some, it can lead them to cause harm to themselves or others. This is rare but not unheard of. Trip killers can be a lifesaver for those who find themselves trapped in such a situation.

In our opinion, trip killers should be a part of every psychonaut’s tool kit. You should strive never to use them, but they should be readily available in case a trip takes a dark turn that you feel you can’t benefit from or work through without putting yourself or others at risk.

No matter how responsible you are when planning a psychedelic trip, there are times when circumstances come up that are outside your control. You think you have the day to sit and trip, but suddenly something comes up (family emergency, etc.), and you need to be sober ASAP.

Even though a trip killer won’t make you feel “normal,” it’ll speed up the process and make you more clear-headed than you would be without it.

Some people should avoid benzodiazepine-based trip killers at all costs . This section outlines who should not take these types of trip killers and what they can use instead.

Although most psychedelics aren’t addictive, benzos definitely are. Anyone with an addictive personality or who has had a past dependence on benzos or similar substances should avoid using these as trip killers.

Benzos have some of the longest-lasting, worst, and most savage withdrawals of any substance on the planet.

Withdrawal symptoms can last for months. If you become addicted and prolong the use of these substances, quitting cold turkey isn’t an option. Simply quitting after prolonged benzo abuse can be life-threatening due to the body seizing up.

In simple terms: don’t use benzo-based trip killers if there’s a chance you’ll get addicted to them.

What To Expect When You “Kill” a Trip

As I’ve mentioned, trip killers aren’t an instant solution. You’re not going to magically become sober as soon as the pill touches your tongue. The onset time and experience will vary depending on the type of trip killer consumed, the dosage taken, the psychedelic consumed, and how far into your trip you are.

That being said, I can give you a rough idea of what happens when consuming a benzodiazepine trip killer during a bad experience.

Let’s paint a hypothetical picture.

A few hours after consuming your chosen psychedelic, you enter an area of dark and disturbing thoughts somewhere in your subconscious mind. At first, tell yourself, “It’s okay; it’s just the psychedelic messing with my brain.”

After a while, you start to convince yourself that this is, in fact, real, and you begin to sink into nightmarish thought loops.

If the situation starts to get out of hand, a trip killer might be employed to bring you back to some semblance of reality.

You chew one milligram of Xanax in the hope that the sublingual absorption will allow it to take effect quickly.

Although unpleasant, the acrid taste of the trip killer in your mouth relieves you. You associate the taste with the trip coming to an end. When you swallow your saliva, you feel a wave of calm rush over you because you know that this nightmare will all be over soon.

About 15 to 30 minutes later (depending on the trip killer consumed), you notice a wave of relaxation come over you. Any feelings of anxiety and panic start to wash away as the drug begins to take effect.

Not only do the dark thought loops start to diminish, but you also start to feel as though you don’t care about much of anything at all. You become emotionless and calm. You may or may not continue to experience hallucinations, but none of them seem to steal your attention.

If you’re not laying down already, you’ll probably seek out somewhere to post up and relax for a while as your muscles start to feel weak.

One hour after taking the trip killer, your hallucinations have likely died down substantially, and you feel much more rational and level-headed. You may even regret taking the trip killer — if you were in this head space originally, perhaps you wouldn’t have had such a terrifying experience.

Two to three hours after ingesting the trip killer, you feel more or less sober (depending on the psychedelic you consumed). Most of the effects of the psychedelics have worn off, and if you’re not already asleep, you’re probably feeling pretty drained and ready for some zzz’s.

You’ll be emotionally and physically exhausted by this time, and you’ll likely reach for a bottle of water and a hefty snack to restore the energy lost throughout the ordeal.

Safety Aspects to Consider When Using Trip Killers

There are a few things to consider when purchasing and adding trip killers to your psychedelic tool kit. The most effective trip killers — benzodiazepines — are restricted in terms of sale and use. This can make it difficult to legally purchase these drugs, which is where our first safety aspect stems.

If you cannot obtain trip killers (benzos) in a legal way — via prescription from a doctor — the level of risk goes up substantially.

The most popular benzodiazepines for recreational use are Valium (diazepam) and Xanax (alprazolam). These can be obtained on the black market, but it’s not recommended.

Illegal vendors distributing Valium and Xanax don’t necessarily consider the consumer’s best interest. Several samples of these substances have contained drugs such as fentanyl (an extremely dangerous synthetic opioid).

Clandestine drug manufacturers use tablet molds that produce exact replicas of the prescribed Xanax and Valium tablets. Criminals produce pills with these molds that look the same but contain a cocktail of potentially life-threatening substances. Whether you’re tripping or not, taking one of these pills at any time may pose a serious health risk.

Basically, unless you’re getting your drugs from a pharmacy, you can never be sure the drugs you’re using are safe.

If you absolutely have to purchase “trip killers” from the black market, you must test them using — at the minimum — a fentanyl test kit. We cannot stress this enough.

You can also buy benzo test kits to help identify what adulterants may be contained in your pills.

You should check your benzos before you need them. You’re not going to have time to test them for safety if using them as a trip killer.

Another safety aspect to consider is, of course, dosage. Getting the correct dosages for each substance is critical to avoid overdosing . However, you also need to consume enough of the substance to kill a trip.

Several individual drugs fall under the benzodiazepine classification; although similar, the required dosage for each differs.

It’s important to note that your weight, gender, and familiarity with the drug will affect the exact dose. A heavier person that regularly consumes benzos will need a far larger dose than a small-framed person that has never tried the substance before.

Below I’ve listed the recommended dosages of the four most popular trip killers based on first-hand reports and prescribed dosage guides. However, you should take these numbers with a grain of salt and do your own research outside before consuming anything to kill a trip. These substances can be dangerous.

  • Alprazolam (Xanax): 0.5 to 1 mg
  • Lorazepam (Ativan): 0.5 to 1.5 mg
  • Diazepam (Valium): 5 to 10 mg
  • Clonazepam (Klonopin): 1 to 1.5 mg

As you can see, the recommended dosages for killing a trip vary and depends on where you are on your trip.

Again, I can’t stress this enough — everyone’s required dosage will be different because of a variety of factors. Unfortunately, your required dose will be something you’ll have to find out through experience. Just be aware that trip killers of this nature don’t work immediately, so don’t keep dosing if you don’t experience any trip-calming effects right away . This is how overdoses occur.

How To Minimize the Risk of a Bad Trip

Trip killers should only be used in an emergency when a trip takes a dark turn that could harm you or others around you. It’s best to avoid trip killers at all costs, and these steps can also help you have the best trip possible.

Preparation is key. If you’ve experimented with psychedelics before, you must have heard of set and setting.

The set is the frame of mind you’re in. When consuming psychedelic substances, you should never be in a negative, anxious, or unstable state of mind. Entering a trip with negative thoughts in your head is a surefire way to a nightmarish trip.

It’s important to relax your body and mind before entering a trip. This can be done by simply putting yourself in a good headspace by recalling a positive memory or experience. Practicing meditation and/or yoga can also help you relax into a positive state of mind.

The setting is the space you’ll experience the trip in. The setting is extremely important in psychedelics and will help you stay in the right “set.” Playing relaxing music, putting beautiful pictures around you, and lighting a few candles can make the setting more relaxed and inviting.

Many people also like to trip out in nature. This is a fantastic way to do it; however, several variables can affect your trip.

If you head out into nature for a psychedelic trip, ensure it’s in a safe area with no foot traffic. Make sure the weather is good, and there are no external factors that may “freak you out.” The last thing you want is bad weather (a storm, for example) or a stranger entering your space — this will likely lead to a bad experience.

Another way to ensure a smooth trip is to have an object nearby that means something to you. This object helps connect you to the physical world and can get you back on course if your trip dives into a dark place . Simply holding the object and looking at it may just be enough to snap you back to reality.

This technique is definitely something to try before resorting to the use of trip killers.

Trip killers may be an important part of the psychonaut’s tool kit. Hopefully, you will never need to use them, and you should strive to work through difficult experiences rather than chemically halt them.

However, if you have a truly terrifying psychedelic experience, they will help you get back to reality as quickly and safely as possible.

The most popular and effective trip killers are benzodiazepines or Z-drugs, but some antipsychotic medications are also effective and a good alternative for people with addictive personalities.

When sourcing trip killers, it’s important to test their purity. Several drugs on the black market are contaminated with fentanyl — an extremely dangerous synthetic opioid that’s similar to morphine but much stronger. This drug can be life-threatening, so it’s of paramount importance that any drug sourced on the black market is tested thoroughly.

Regardless of whether you have trip killers available, you should always practice safe psychedelic use. Ensuring that your set and setting are perfect before a trip helps mitigate the risk of a bad trip occurring. As we said, you should never need to use a trip killer, but they should be available as an absolute last resort.

Beyond the Hourglass: Duration, Expectations, and Integration of an Acid Trip

In this article, we will delve into the factors that influence the length of an LSD trip, the stages of an LSD experience, and how to navigate through them.

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), commonly referred to as “acid,” is a potent psychedelic drug known for its mind-altering effects. Aside from psilocybin , acid is one of the most popular psychedelics out there. When consumed, acid induces a range of sensory, perceptual, and psychological experiences. One crucial aspect to understand is how long does an acid trip last and the duration of each stage of its effects, as it drastically differs from those of other psychedelics like psilocybin.

How Long Does an Acid Trip Last?

How long does acid last? It depends on how it binds to its receptor.

Acid binds to the 5-HT2A receptor. The conformational change that occurs after binding is what causes acid trips to last so long. Source: Medical News Today

Upon ingestion, LSD is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and binds to serotonin receptors in the brain. The effects typically begin within 30 to 90 minutes after ingestion, although the onset time can vary based on factors such as dose, individual metabolism, and whether it was consumed on an empty or full stomach.

How long does an acid trip last? Well, the duration of an acid trip is a highly individualized experience. On average, the effects of LSD can last anywhere from 8 to 12 hours or even slightly longer. However, this timeframe is not fixed and can deviate depending on several factors, including the dose taken, the purity of the substance, the individual’s metabolism, and their unique psychological and physiological makeup. On average, expect to dedicate a full day to acid: a couple of hours preparing your space before hand, 12 hours tripping, and the residual effects post-comedown. But primarily, the length of a trip is influenced by molecular biology. Let’s discuss these mechanisms briefly.

Acid is a serotonergic psychedelic compound that primarily interacts with serotonin receptors in the brain. Among these receptors, the 5-HT 2A receptor subtype plays a vital role in mediating the psychedelic effects of LSD. When LSD enters the bloodstream and reaches the brain, it binds to and activates the 5-HT 2A receptors , triggering a cascade of neural events that lead to the characteristic psychedelic experience.

The duration of an acid trip is influenced by the occupancy and binding affinity of LSD to the 5-HT 2A receptors. The term “occupancy” refers to the percentage of receptors that are engaged by the LSD molecule, while “binding affinity” describes the strength of the interaction between LSD and the receptor.

LSD has a high affinity for the 5-HT 2A receptor. Once bound, LSD induces a conformational change in the receptor, leading to the activation of downstream signaling pathways. It is this conformational change that causes acid to last so long. Once acid binds to the receptor, think of like a “lid” getting put on the receptor that prevents acid from leaving, thus once it binds, it remains there. This leads to the downregulation of these receptors, which means there is a decrease in the number of available receptors that can bind to endogenous (native) ligands, such as serotonin. The effects of LSD are related to the time course of concentration in the plasma, according to a comprehensive review of the drug . Sometimes, this “lid” may be loose and allow some acid molecules to unbind as the high wears off, but for all receptors to be “uncapped”, then it can take 12 to 24 hours. While the perceivable effects of the drug stop around the 12 hour mark, the aftereffects, or “afterglow” can be felt well into the next day.

To summarize, as long as LSD is bound to 5-HT 2A receptors and they continue to be downregulated, the effects of the drug will continue to persist. The trip ends once LSD unbinds from these receptors and brain cells eventually pull both these receptors and LSD into the cell, where they get degraded or recycled.

Metabolism and Clearance:

How long an acid trip lasts is also influenced by the metabolism and clearance rate of LSD from the body . After ingestion, LSD is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and distributed throughout various tissues, including the brain. The liver metabolizes LSD into inactive compounds, which are then eliminated from the body through urine.

Cytochrome P450 enzymes contribute to the metabolism of LSD to nor-LSD and 2-oxo-3-hydroxy-LSD: Implications for clinical LSD use - ScienceDirect

The liver metabolizes LSD into other metabolites. The metabolism of LSD will affect the duration of the trip. Source: ScienceDirect

The rate at which acid is metabolized and cleared can vary between individuals due to genetic and physiological factors. Some individuals may have more efficient metabolic pathways, leading to a shorter trip duration, while others may experience a prolonged duration due to slower metabolism. If a person metabolizes a drug quickly, they may only experience a 6-8 hour trip, while an average metabolism will put duration in the 8-12 hour range. More uncommonly, there may be people who metabolize LSD very slowly, which can cause their trips to extend way past the 12-hour mark.

Factors Affecting the Duration of an LSD Trip:

how long does an acid trip last

Each person’s body chemistry and sensitivity to LSD can influence how long the effects last.

The duration of an LSD trip is highly variable, with the effects lasting anywhere from 8 to 12 hours on average. However, it’s essential to note that LSD’s effects can persist for longer periods in some cases, especially with higher doses or in individuals who are particularly sensitive to the drug. Some factors that can affect the duration of an acid trip are:

  • Dosage : The strength of the LSD dose plays a significant role in determining the trip’s length. Higher doses are likely to produce more intense and prolonged effects, sometimes extending beyond the 12-hour mark. It is important to know the dose your LSD is and how it will affect you.
  • Individual Sensitivity : Each person’s body chemistry and sensitivity to LSD can influence how long the effects last. Some individuals may experience a shorter or longer trip duration compared to others, even when taking the same dose.
  • Tolerance : Repeated use of LSD within a short period leads to tachyphylaxis, which is the rapidly diminishing response to successive doses of a drug, thus reducing the drug’s overall effects. This can result in shorter trip durations as the body becomes accustomed to the substance. Make sure you wait around 7-14 days in between trips for tolerance levels to return to normal.
  • Drug Purity and Potency : The quality and potency of LSD can vary, as it is often synthesized illicitly. The purity and strength of the LSD can impact the duration and intensity of the trip. Ensure that your LSD is legitimate, as there is the high probability that it is adulterated with substances like 25I-NBOMe. Always test your supply before consuming acid – testing kits are cheap and readily available online .

What are the Stages of an LSD Trip and What to Expect During Each One?

What to expect during an acid trip? What are the different stages of the trip? Source: KQED

Similar to other psychedelics like shrooms, acid has a come up, a peak, a plateau, and a comedown. It is important to know what to expect in each stage in order to have a good, safe trip. Be aware that higher doses will change these stages, which we will discuss in detail where appropriate.

  • The Come-Up (30-90 minutes) : The come-up stage occurs shortly after taking LSD and involves the initial effects starting to manifest. Users may experience heightened sensory perception, mood alterations, and a sense of anticipation. A person will start feeling the come up around 30 minutes to an hour after dosing, even possibly up to 90 minutes after ingestion. The come-up can vary amongst individuals, but here are some things that a person might feel. Users may feel a slight sense of anxiety during this time, their body may feel either heavier or slightly looser, they may start yawning more, they may feel slightly disoriented, and/or they may experience heightened sensory perceptions. Higher doses and people who are more sensitive to acid or psychedelics can cause the come-up to be shorter, or the effects be felt under 30 minutes, so be aware of the amount of drug you are taking.
  • The Peak (3-5 hours) : The peak is the most intense phase of an LSD trip, characterized by profound visual distortions, intense emotions, and a loss of ego boundaries at higher doses. This stage typically lasts several hours and is marked by heightened introspection and altered states of consciousness. It is hard to explain what one is to expect during this part, as it can be very subjective. Talk to anyone about what they see on acid, and stories will vastly differ. Additionally, the intention of the trip can also greatly affect what will happen in this phase. At manageable doses, the peak will be where a person gets the most visuals or visual distortions. Walls may feel like they are breathing, colors will be brighter and more vibrant, faces will look distorted and their proportions will look altered, different textures such as hair, fur, blankets, etc. will feel different, and/or visual reality will feel “clearer” as if everything is hyper 3D. A typical effect on an acid peak will be the appearance of tracers, which is the experience of trails left behind by moving objects. For example, passing one’s hand in front of your face will leave a trail of varying hues, opacities, and colors. There is a certain point during an acid trip, based on my own personal experiences with the drug, that depending on the dose, the experience will shift from a visual experience to an introspective one where you are taken to a very specific psychedelic headspace. It is hard to describe this state, but in this headspace, you are on another state of existence. It is like being in between a state of reality and fiction, where you are able to understand you are on a drug, but there may be synchronicities or unexplainable phenomena that make you question whether reality is, well, real. Again, acid experiences can be highly subjective, so this may just be a thing I experience, but it is worth noting.Additionally, some people may experience a loss of reality where they are unable to discern what is fact or fiction. This can be common on higher doses. To prevent becoming paranoid or scared during a psychedelic-induced psychosis, it is important to know that this may happen.  At higher doses, a person could experience the complete unraveling of reality and feel like they are dying. As scary as that may sound, if properly prepared, this can be a manageable, even enjoyable experience. It is worth repeating that the experience during the peak will be subjective based on a number of factors including the individual’s intention for the trip, the dose, their sensitivity to the drug, and their set and setting. Lastly, smoking weed during the peak of an acid trip can be used to extend the duration of it, thus it is not recommended for beginners to combine weed, if they are not prepared for that.
  • The Comedown (3-5 hours) : After the peak, the effects of LSD gradually begin to subside, leading to a more manageable and reflective state. The effects of the drug will still be felt, but they will not be as intense. Visuals will begin subsiding and you will leave any mental headspace you were in and return to a more manageable, sober state. This period can last a couple of hours. For certain people, smoking weed during this part can cause the trip to regress to the peak or can cause the peak and comedown to come in waves. If you feel like a slight sense of agitation and anticipation building during the comedown and things start feeling “different,” then just take a deep breath and let the trip take you wherever it wants to take you.
  • The “Afterglow” : The afterglow, or after effects, is the last stage of an acid trip and can last several hours after the 12-hour mark or even extend into the following day. The “afterglow” stage of an acid trip refers to the period following the peak experience when the effects of LSD begin to fully subside and are entering the last leg of the trip. It is characterized by residual sensations and altered perceptions, albeit with reduced intensity compared to the peak. During this stage, individuals may experience a sense of calm, introspection, and enhanced appreciation for their surroundings. The afterglow can be a time of reflection and integration, allowing users to process the insights and emotions that arose during the trip. A day after a trip, it is common to feel a lingering sense of positivity and heightened creativity, although some individuals may also experience mental and physical fatigue, depending how the trip went. Overall, the afterglow stage provides an opportunity for gentle reentry into everyday life and can leave lasting positive effects on one’s well-being and perspective.

Tips for Navigating an LSD Trip

Navigating an LSD trip can be a transformative and introspective experience when approached with care and preparation. Here are some essential tips to help ensure a positive journey:

  • Set and Setting : Create a comfortable and safe environment before consuming LSD. Opt for a peaceful location with trusted companions to minimize the risk of anxiety or discomfort during the trip. Ensure that, if you’re tripping at home, your space is tidy and organized, as clutter can spur up anxiety and discomfort during a trip. If you are outside or in nature, ensure that you are with someone you trust who can help you return someplace safe in the event that the trip takes a turn for the worse.
  • Dose Responsibly : Start with a low to moderate dose if you’re new to LSD, allowing yourself to acclimate to the effects. Avoid excessive doses, especially if you have prior obligations or time constraints. It is better to build up to a larger dose, that way you can know what to expect with each rise in dose and be able to manage the situation better.
  • Supportive Company : Tripping with close friends or experienced individuals who can provide reassurance and guidance can contribute to a more positive experience. If tripping alone, it is best to do it after having experience with the drug. Do not trip alone in public or in nature, as this can be dangerous if the trip gets overwhelming or hits harder than expected.
  • Allow for Integration : After the trip, give yourself time to reflect and integrate the experience. Journaling, talking with trusted friends, or seeking professional help, if necessary, can aid in processing the insights gained from the trip. Personally, I keep a journal specific to acid trips where I write what I saw and what I remember. From there, I can revisit it throughout the coming days or weeks to begin extrapolating what lessons would apply to my life and why certain things surfaced during the trip, then I talk about these findings with my therapist to get a deeper insight into my psyche and process emotions and memories. Integration is an integral part of any psychedelic experience, and skipping it is going to prevent you from gaining the full effects of the drug.
  • Stay Hydrated : An acid trip is quite the time commitment, and it can be easy to forget to stay properly hydrated during it. Keep a water bottle near you at all times so you can stay hydrated. Dehydration can exacerbate discomfort and anxiety, so ensure proper hydration.
  • Embrace Openness and Surrender : LSD can lead to profound introspection and a shift in perspective. Embrace the experience with an open mind, allowing the drug to guide you through its effects. Surrender to the journey and let go of control, allowing yourself to fully explore the realms of consciousness. Do not try to control the direction of your trip. Refusing to relinquish control can make a trip turn bad or riddle it with anxiety.
  • Ground Yourself When Needed : If a trip is starting to feel too overwhelming, taking deep breaths, hydrating, touching certain textures, or talking it out with a friend can help ground you. Sometimes, the experience can feel overwhelming and you may forget what you were saying, what just happened, etc., which can become disorientating. Simply having someone to remind you and keep you on track can help you feel calm. If you are alone, writing a note to yourself prior to the trip that states you are on a drug, on what day, what time you took it, etc. can help ground you and prevent you from spiraling. Even certain textures such as a blanket, a toy, or even petting a pet can bring you back to reality.

Final Thoughts

In all, the duration of an LSD trip varies depending on several factors, including dosage, individual sensitivity, tolerance, and drug purity. While most LSD experiences last between 8 to 12 hours, it’s essential to be prepared for the possibility of longer trips, especially with higher doses. Understanding the stages of an LSD trip and implementing responsible practices can contribute to a safe and meaningful psychedelic experience. Remember to prioritize set and setting, dose responsibly, and seek support when needed to ensure a positive journey into the depths of your consciousness.

Tripping On Acid: Everything You Need To Know About LSD

Tripping on acid

Are you thinking about tripping on acid for the first time?

Since its inception in the early 1940s, LSD (or “acid”) has been a popular choice for people looking to alter their state of mind.

Nicknamed “acid,” the psychedelic drug is derived from lysergic acid and can cause hallucinations, changes in perception, and distorted thinking.

If you’re curious about tripping on acid, read on for everything you need to know about the LSD experience.

What Is Acid (LSD)?

Acid, also known as LSD, is a psychedelic drug that produces hallucinogenic “trips.”

Acid has been known to cause hallucinations, which makes people think they are seeing things that aren’t really there.

But, acid can also help people feel better about themselves or their current situation if taken responsibly with proper supervision from an experienced person who knows what he or she is doing.

Who Discovered LSD?

LSD was first discovered in 1938 by the Swiss scientist, Dr. Albert Hofmann .

While Hoffmann first synthesized LSD in 1938, it didn’t have any particular effect until he accidentally ingested some while re-synthesizing it.

The powerful effects of this drug caused him to investigate its properties more thoroughly and eventually led to many groundbreaking discoveries about how our brains work.

It was not until 1943 when acid became popularized and used as a way to escape reality among people in the Beat Generation culture of America.

Is Tripping On Acid Safe?

While there are some risks associated with taking LSD, it is considered relatively safe when used in a controlled setting.

Safety can depend on the setting and who you’re with. LSD is a powerful drug that should be respected and is not something to take lightly.

When used in a safe and controlled setting, tripping on acid can be an extremely enlightening experience.

However, it’s important to be aware of the risks involved and to make sure you’re with someone you trust who will look out for your safety.

Acid can cause nausea , anxiety, paranoia, and even panic attacks in some people, so it’s important to be prepared for those potential side effects before you trip.

LSD Side Effects

Some side effects of tripping on acid include:

  • increased body temperature
  • increased heart rate/blood pressure
  • pupil dilation
  • heightened senses
  • tooth grinding/clenching
  • lack of saliva production

How Long Does Acid Last?

An acid trip usually lasts , on average, about 8-12 hours.

When acid enters the brain it can cause hallucinations, which is when you see things that aren’t really there.

The acid can also make you feel different emotions like happiness, sadness, or anger depending on what kind of acid you’re using.

Many people use acid to escape reality for a while because it makes them think they’re seeing things that aren’t really there.

How Do You Know How Much To Take?

The dose of LSD you should take depends on your weight and tolerance. For a first-time user, it’s recommended to take between 25-50 micrograms.

It’s important to remember that LSD is unpredictable and it’s very difficult to know how much you need until you’ve taken it. So start low and work your way up if necessary. Make sure have a sober friend or “guide” around just in case things get too intense.

Always test the LSD on a small patch of skin before ingesting in order to gauge how strong the batch is.

The only way you can know for sure if your LSD is pure or not pure is by testing it yourself at home using verified drug testing kits.

How Do You Prepare For An LSD Trip?

It’s best to avoid caffeine, alcohol , and large meals before an LSD trip. Also, be sure to have a safe environment and someone you trust to be with you during the experience.

Some people find it helpful to have some music or ambient sounds to listen to during an LSD trip, while others prefer complete silence. It’s also a good idea to have some light snacks on hand in case you get hungry.

Remember that everyone experiences LSD trips differently, so there is no one “correct” way to prepare for a psychedelic trip . Just relax and go with the flow!

Here’s a guide on how to best prepare for a psychedelic trip.

What Does Tripping On Acid Feel Like?

Users never know exactly what to expect since acid’s effects are different for everyone.

It varies with potency, the person using it, the environment, and their mood before a trip begins.

Your mind may see things that seem normal at first, but they start to warp and change around you.

Many people say tripping on acid like watching an old fashioned 3D movie where the images move toward or away from you.

Some people say these psychedelic illusions lead them to deep introspection about life or secret desires not normally known as important factors in their daily lives.

When tripping on acid, people often get more open minded. They may show interest in new things that they would normally never be open to.

LSD also make everything look different and can stimulate hallucinations. A person’s perception of time tends to change, making them seem like their thoughts are going faster than they actually are, or slower.

How Long Does Acid Stay In Your System?

LSD stays in your system for about three days.

This means that it will take around three days before you begin to feel normal again. However, the full effects of the acid should be gone after about twelve hours.

How Can An Acid Trip Help You?

Many people claim acid can help improve their perception and understanding of life and others if they take it responsibly and under supervision from a doctor or experienced person. This is often called “psychedelic therapy.”

People suffering from mental diseases such as schizophrenia have found the positive affects of acid by taking small doses of it under psychological supervision to help them cope with their illness.

What Does LSD Look Like?

While everyone’s experience on LSD is different, the visuals are often described as “wavy” and “vivid.”

We’ve included a few images below to do our best at painting the picture of what tripping on acid may look like:

LSD Visuals

Is LSD Addictive?

LSD is not addictive in the way that cigarettes or drugs like cocaine are.

While there have been cases of people who take it daily, this is an extremely small percentage of users.

However, LSD can be psychologically addictive for some individuals with a pre-existing mental illness who repeatedly use LSD to create an alternate reality for themselves.

Additionally, prolonged use can cause physiological changes that cement bad habits into daily life.

Some travelers find that even if they try LSD just once, it alters their perception forever because while they were tripping on acid, they saw the world as it truly was for the first time.

Is LSD Legal In The United States?

LSD is not legal in the United States. It is classified as a Schedule I drug, which means that it has a high potential for abuse and is not currently accepted medical use in treatment in the US.

12 Best Things to Do on Acid

Patterns and playlists and peach fuzz, oh my.

Article by console.log(""); console.log("author name"); console.log(""); Delilah Friedler .author-bio * {display: unset !important;} Fact Checked by: Shelby Hartman Published on June 8, 2022 Updated March 11, 2024

Since Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann first dosed himself with the compound in 1943, lysergic acid diethylamide (otherwise known as LSD, or “acid”) has indelibly changed culture, art,  individuals, and society at large. With its propensity for causing vivid and intricate visuals, as well as striking epiphanies and spiritual experiences, acid has proven its power to expand our perceptions of the world. Yet acid trips can also be associated with paranoia, anxiety, and even delusions—and what you do while on the drug will largely determine how your experience.

Just like when tripping on mushrooms , your “set” (inner emotions, beliefs, and perceptions) and your “setting” (physical surroundings) play a giant role in how your trip unfolds. Taking acid at a loud, crowded music festival will be very different, and almost certainly more challenging, than tripping with a close friend at home. As LSD can dilate time (that is, make time feel longer) and encourage great focus on the present moment, any activity you choose to indulge is sure to feel brighter, richer, and more potent. Here’s a list of 12 classic things to do on acid that tend to encourage good vibes.

Best Things to Do on LSD

As just one of many substances that have been called entheogens (that is, “creating God or the divine within”), LSD has its own unique flavor that goes best with certain activities and experiences—like all the fun things to do on acid listed below. A word of wisdom: don’t try any of them that are outside your normal range of possibility or access; you should not drive anywhere while tripping! Remember, most psychonauts follow the adage: “start low, go slow,” and only trip in a comfortable environment. You can find more acid-related advice and inspiration on Reddit, Shroomery, or other forums.

Next, always know the laws in your region before obtaining acid. While psychedelics and other drugs are decriminalized in a few regions across the United States and Canada, LSD remains federally illegal in most places. Finally, if you’re new to acid, don’t forget to check out our past resource on acid. Keeping all of this in mind—and without further ado— here are the best things to do on acid:

1. Look at Patterns

leaves

Wood grain, a stucco ceiling, pebbles and stones on a path beneath your feet—seemingly anything can reveal itself as a mesmerizing pattern on acid. You won’t need an artist’s brain to feel like you’re seeing the works of M.C. Escher in a bowl of trail mix. Seeing patterns is one thing you’re likely to do on acid whether you plan to or not, but perhaps try playing with that intentionally: What figures might you find dancing in your boring bathroom wallpaper? When everyday sights come to life, it reminds us of how much intricate beauty we walk past on the daily, rarely stopping to notice. But with acid, remember: the most interesting sights may be behind your eyelids.

2. Laugh With Your Friends

two people laughing

On acid, words can be hard. The drug reveals layer upon layer of meaning and significance in everything you see, touch, taste, and hear, all at once—so how can you begin to explain? At the same time, when you can find the words (or even when you’re fumbling), language can be a source of great amusement. When tripping with good friends, you may find yourself trying on accents, playing recurring characters, or inventing riproariously funny puns. Even if words are failing you, any number of absurd visuals can send you and your trip-mates into fits of laughter. Just try not to laugh at each other!

people hiking

As with tripping on mushrooms , being outside on acid is generally a delight. Countless trippers have crossed deserts and tromped through forests, looked down from mountains, and swam at the beach—all enhanced by the crisp, “high definition” quality acid can lend to the senses. Of course, where you do decide to hike is important; it’s best to walk on an easy trail with good signage and access to water (while tripping, dehydration can feel like your world is ending). You’ll want to choose a place and time that is relatively quiet and low-trafficked, as crowds can be a major stressor and you never know when you’ll want to take a break. However, with the right planning and preparation (bring a map!), tripping on acid in a beautiful place can be one of life’s most sublime pleasures.

4. Watch a Movie

woman watching movie with dog

Of course, not everyone has access to the outdoors at all times—and since an “acid trip” is fundamentally a journey of mind, body, and soul, you can really do it anywhere. Watching a movie is one way to let artists guide your experience, as your eyes and ears pour across the story and drink in its meaning—or perhaps miss the story entirely and feast on visual delights. Redditors have already spelled out many lists of the movies that pair best with acid, but this writer’s personal recommendation is the 1951 Disney classic Alice in Wonderland. Dim the lights, get comfortable and let yourself tumble down the rabbit hole.

5. Doodle or Write

person doodling

Acid’s power to spur creativity and inspire art-making is well-documented. No matter which other activities you are trying, you may want to have paper, pens, and markers handy so you can take a stab at expressing yourself or documenting your trip. Let your hand doodle and discover forms you never dreamt of before; new characters, colors, and complexities emerge from the depths of your own mind. Write down the interesting thoughts you’re having, so you can later sort them into “genius,” “funny,” and “not that interesting.” For 6-12 hours, acid will have you feeling like you’re on a trip: Why not send a postcard?

6. Lay in the Sun

person laying in grass

You may not be able to go on a hike, but if you take acid on a nice day (which this writer certainly recommends), at least go outside and feel the sun on your skin—your heightened senses will thank you. It’s almost like you are a plant and can feel yourself photosynthesizing, turning sunlight into energy. Laying down on acid is also a great way to let go and allow your internal process to unfold. Wrapped in the warm blanket of comforting sunshine, you can allow your gaze and thoughts to wander and discover what comes up. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

7. Eat Fruit

grapes

Eating while tripping on any psychedelic is notoriously difficult, but you must remember that your body has caloric needs. It’s usually good to eat a hearty meal a few hours before, but if the urge to snack (or up your blood sugar) strikes you while on acid, natural foods like raw fruit are a great place to turn. The skin of a peach will tickle your lips; the acidity of citrus will strike you right in the face. Since preparing the fruit may be hard while tripping, consider cutting it in advance and leaving a tray in the fridge—a gift from past you to present you.

8. Listen to a DJ Mix

person listening to music on headphones

There are many kinds of psychedelic music out there, including playlists and albums specially curated to enhance the therapeutic aspects of tripping. Yet there is something unique about DJ mixes, which usually involve one to three hours of music that’s been intentionally selected and mixed together to create a cohesive experience. It may help to hear something you’re less familiar with; As one ketamine-assisted psychotherapist told the Guardian , “Music that is non-recognizable taps into the default mode network, and the mixing creates a coherent journey” that can take you deeper. You might check out this list of Essential Mixes to find a DJ that you vibe with.

9. Call Fireside’s Peer Support Line

fireside project psychedelic hotline

If you’re tripping alone, or find yourself or a friend to be in need of outside support, you can easily reach trained peer support volunteers at the Fireside Project by calling or texting 62-FIRESIDE (that’s 623-473-7433). Fireside volunteers are well-equipped to talk you through any aspect of the tripping experience, whether you’re going through a dark moment or just want someone to share your joy with. No reason too big or too small! You can also call them after your trip is over—one of their specialties is helping people integrate, or process and learn from, a psychedelic experience that has ended.

10. Stargaze

people stargazing

If you find yourself tripping after dark (which is likely, since the effects of LSD tend to linger for hours after they peak), try to safely get somewhere with a clear view of the night sky. Remember what we said about patterns? You won’t believe how many will make themselves known in the stars. Maybe you know constellations or use an augmented reality app to find them. Even if you don’t, the tesselations and mirroring effects will still be (literally) out of this world. Bonus points if you see a shooting star or trip during a meteor shower.

11. Watch Train Rides Shot in Ultra High-Def

One of the best things to do on acid? Reddit user aciddoeme (alongside a bevy of other great ideas), you can fire up your favorite screen and turn to a free YouTube channel of train rides through various countries and landscapes, all shot in the ultra-high-definition 4K resolution. Skim past waterfalls and along mountainsides on a journey from Italy to Switzerland; watch cherry blossoms bloom during springtime in Japan. With videos like this, the Internet acts as a teleportation device and time machine, transporting you into any number of far-flung locales that feel all the more real while tripping. So where do you want to go?

12. Sit by a Fire

two people sitting by fire

Any element can be striking while on acid: rushing water cools your skin; the earth is alive and grounding; by winds and gusts, the air makes its strength known—but in terms of surprise and sheer magic, there’s nothing like sitting by a fire. Whether you’re camping or in a backyard, you may have access to a pit where you can safely make a fire and watch it climb, lick, and devour whatever you feed it. Shapes and swirls appear in the flames, while the warmth recreates the sunshine you may have soaked in or missed in the daytime. This is also a great way to bring friends close for further bonding, conversation, and laughter. As psychedelics strip away our assumptions and norms, we find comfort in returning to the primal.

  • An Acid Trip: What is an acid/LSD trip like?

It can be scary.

A lot of people talk about the good side of it. DO NOT underestimate it. It can be the most amazing experience in the world or it could go very different. You will drive yourself nuts if you try to comprehend everything that’s happening. With the drop of the hat, it can go from the most spectacular feeling to feeling totally and completely helpless. It’s sobering to realize how incredibly small and weak the human mind is. It can render you completely helpless. 1

It can be amazing.

Psychedelic experiences can be one of the most beautiful experiences a human can ever have. Sam Harris: “But if [my daughters] don’t try a psychedelic like psilocybin or LSD at least once in their adult lives, I will wonder whether they had missed one of the most important rites of passage a human being can experience”

It can be hard to remember or describe.

The first thing to note about LSD is that it puts you in a state of mind that can be difficult to comprehend to someone who is not currently under the influence of LSD. Recalling an LSD experience is similar to recalling events from your childhood- even if you can remember the actual events, it may be difficult to truly recall what you were thinking and feeling during that event. 2

When you have your eyes open, you won’t see things that don’t exist.

A common misconception about LSD is that it causes you to see things that aren’t there. Everything you see on LSD actually exists, you just see it differently than you normally would. LSD makes you much more attentive to detail (this applies to all your senses). It will also cause you to see patterns and objects in things that otherwise aren’t very interesting. Acid feels like “seeing the world for the first time,” with stimulated and profound seeming thoughts, and sort of a dreamlike feeling. 3 Hallucinations also exist, though it would be more accurate to think of them as visual distortions - i.e. seeing extra patterns in the grass, a photo of a waterfall might look like the water is moving when it’s actually not - but don’t think of it as you’ll be seeing green leprechauns that will talk to you. See the first few images on this page for an accurate depiction of low to moderate acid dosage visual effects.

LSD thought processes are weird:

Example of LSD Thought Processes[1]: “Let’s go back.” “We can’t. We have to go forward.” “Why can’t we go back?” “Because that’s the way we came.” 2

This is what it’s like to experience never-ending acid trips

acid trip kopen

People having perpetual hallucinations from psychedelic drugs are finding a community on TripTok. But how rare is the condition, and is it becoming more common?

Words: Brit Dawson 9th August 2022

Over the course of a year and a half, California-based Sophia Alcala, now 21, took 125 tabs of acid over 50 trips. In the months afterwards, she found her everyday reality was slowly altering. “ I felt like I was on LSD all the time,” she tells THE FACE. “ I’d see objects in different colours and colourful visual snow (small flickering dots that occupy the entire visual field). At night, it was almost impossible to see, as my vision would be covered in static and geometric figures, and if I closed my eyes, I’d see landscapes. Walls would look like they were breathing, faces would morph and change, and the floaters in my eyes would leave trails. I’d also experience intense brain fog, and my memory was extremely poor.”

This wasn’t the first time Alcala had experienced these symptoms – having suffered them after “ a really bad marijuana experience” when she was 17 – but it was the most intense they’d ever been. Although she was certain they were signs of hallucinogen persisting perception disorder (HPPD), a condition in which a person experiences long-lasting visual hallucinations, commonly after taking psychedelics , doctors were unable to diagnose her with anything. “ I tried talking to my therapist and psychiatrist [about HPPD], but neither of them had any idea what I was talking about. No one wanted to diagnose me with anything, so I was just lost and hopeless for many years.”

This feeling is common among HPPD sufferers, whose symptoms are often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. The condition causes people to re-experience the effects of a trip – often referred to as flashbacks or a “ never-ending trip” – typically via visual disturbances. While some people might find the symptoms of HPPD pleasurable – and most are still aware of what’s reality and what’s not – for many, the condition is debilitating and detrimental to their mental health. What’s more, studies suggest that there’s no relationship between the occurrence of HPPD and the amount of substance used, meaning it’s possible to develop the condition after just one trip.

This is exactly what happened to 20-year-old Lanardo Smith – a London-based musician who goes by the moniker sbk – who developed HPPD after taking one dose of the psychedelic drug 2CB when he was 17. His symptoms include “ tracers, geometric patterns when [his] eyes are closed, and auras”. He also tells THE FACE that the condition causes everything to have a “ breathing effect”, while images can “ sometimes appear two-dimensional”. Unlike Alcala, Smith was able to get a diagnosis of HPPD fairly quickly after “ maybe a few visits to the doctor”. He was also diagnosed with depersonalisation/derealisation disorder (DPDR), a condition that makes you feel mentally or physically detached from yourself and can reduce your sense of reality. Like HPPD, DPDR can be caused by use of psychedelics, and the pair often occur simultaneously.

Smith is one of the scarce few to get a HPPD diagnosis – or so it seems, as there’s no research into the prevalence of the condition. Despite two forms of the disorder being formally recognised by medical professionals (Type 1 being brief, random flashbacks, and Type 2 being long-term, all-encompassing visual hallucinations) the lack of official diagnoses means doctors have limited resources to draw on to help those enduring the condition.

Psychiatrist Steven Locke , a rare specialist in HPPD, says there are several factors at play when it comes to doctors’ inability to study the disorder (and therefore correctly diagnose it). The first is its low incidence rate, affecting an estimated four per cent of those who’ve used psychedelic drugs (Locke’s own estimation is more modest, at one to two per cent of people). Furthermore, due to the illicit status of the drugs that can induce HPPD – including LSD, shrooms, 2CB, MDMA and weed – it’s hard to know exactly what was in the drug that brought on the condition (thanks to possible contaminants), while patients suffering from it may be more reluctant to disclose their drug use for fear of legal repercussions.

Even if someone does manage to get a correct diagnosis, Locke says treatments are “ trial and error”. “ You have to try a series of different medications and learn from what happens to see what works,” he explains. “ What helps one person may make another worse.” (Though, he asserts, the main way to alleviate HPPD symptoms is to “ refrain from any additional use of psychedelics or other mind-altering drugs”). Moreover, patients are commonly mistreated with antipsychotic medications which, Locke says, “ frequently makes their symptoms worse”.

Case in point: when Smith was prescribed antipsychotics, he says they did nothing but “ remind [him] of the problem”, adding that “ things didn’t start to get better until [he] stopped taking medication”.

“ I can be driving and I’ll flash back to a really awful trip I’ve had. Being around weed can also really trigger my acid flashbacks.”

All of this can leave sufferers feeling alone in their daily struggle with the condition, forcing them to figure out their own ways of coping and healing. For many, this comes via online communities like the burgeoning HPPD one on TikTok , of which Smith is a part. While some people use popular sounds to make more irreverent videos about the condition – some of which even have millions of views – others, like Smith, use the platform to share tips and tricks about regaining control over it. In one video, which he calls the “ definitive guide ” to overcoming HPPD, Smith urges sufferers to stop obsessing over finding a cure for the condition, and instead learn to accept that they “ see life like this now”. This is how Smith says he “ fully overcame HPPD” and learned to “ live a normal life” – in fact, he tells THE FACE, the condition actually “ affects [him] positively these days”.

For viewers like 17-year-old Kyra from New England, who also suffers with HPPD, these kinds of videos remind her that she’s “ not alone”, and agrees with Smith that “ positive self talk and distractions” are her “ saviour”. Kyra has never had an official diagnosis, but believes she developed HPPD after struggling with drug addiction in her mid-teens. And, despite a year of being sober, she says she still experiences symptoms of it today – notably visual hallucinations and acid flashbacks. “ I can be driving and I’ll flash back to a really awful trip I’ve had,” she recalls. “ Being around weed can also really trigger my acid flashbacks.”

Like with any social media platform, Kyra has found relief and reassurance in the TikTok community, but has also been subjected to hateful comments , or people accusing her of fabricating her symptoms. It’s likely this speaks to the lack of knowledge surrounding the condition, and reflects the stigma that still surrounds drug use. Despite this, Kyra says that the community – in the absence of medical support – has taught her that she’s “ not crazy” and that this stuff is “ normal after [using or] abusing psychedelics”. She continues: “ For a long time, I just thought I fried my brain, but talking to people who also struggle has been extremely therapeutic for me.”

@yungsbk This is the true guide on how to overcome HPPD #fyp #hppd #hallucinogenpersistingperceptiondisorder #psychedelics #drugawareness #mentalhealth ♬ original sound - sbk

Alcala similarly found relief online – via the nearly 10k-strong r/HPPD subreddit, for which she’s a moderator – as well as by distracting herself from the HPPD by keeping herself “ busy with things to do all the time”. She also started cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to work on her mental health, and joined a drug recovery programme (although psychedelics are considered to be non-addictive , habitual users may struggle to shake a  psychological dependency ). “ Slowly over the course of a year, it gradually started to go away,” she says, adding that she now has “ no symptoms at all, except for the occasional visual snow flare up”.

But, as psychedelics undergo a so-called “ renaissance ” – and are increasingly being used in clinical settings as treatment for various mental health disorders – Locke is concerned that cases of HPPD may rise. “ I’ve already been seeing an increase in people contacting me seeking consultations,” he says, adding the caveat, “ but that may just reflect word of mouth.” But, although he says heightened HPPD prevalence would be a “ tragedy”, due to its debilitating effects on those he’s evaluated, he believes the newfound focus on psychedelic research will have the positive knock-on effect of improving HPPD research. In fact, it’s already begun – Locke is currently collaborating with Johns Hopkins University’s Centre for Psychedelic & Consciousness Research on a survey of HPPD sufferers.

For sufferers, though, the most important thing is for more people to be aware of HPPD – and to have access to compassionate, comprehensible, accurate information that doesn’t encourage stigma nor fear-mongering. As Smith concludes: “ I just want people to know that there’s light at the end of the tunnel.”

Acid Trip: How Long Does It Last, and What Does It Feel Like? | OC Revive

Acid is a common name for lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), a hallucinogenic substance that affects a person’s mental state for a given period. And the phrase “acid trip” is often used to describe what a person experiences when under the influence of acid. Most individuals may feel disconnected from their surroundings when under the influence of acid. They may hear sounds and sensations that were not there. The user has no control over how long the effects of this drug last; they might last up to 12 hours.

What is an Acid Trip?

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), commonly known as acid, belongs to the class of drugs known as psychedelics. When someone consumes lysergic acid diethylamide, they may experience substantial alterations in their mental and emotional states and their perception of their surroundings; this is called an “acid trip.”

During an acid trip, which typically lasts 12 hours, the user loses touch with reality and may feel, see, hear, or sense and observe things that are not real. Acid is a drug that is classified as a Schedule I drug. This indicates that it is not presently used in clinical practice and that there is a significant risk of abuse.

What Does an Acid Trip Feel Like?

The symptoms of an acid trip might begin anywhere between 20 and 90 minutes after intake. The trip may take 10 to 12 hours, but the length of the medication’s effect is determined by various variables, including the dosage, the patient, and the medicine’s quality. Acid’s effects vary widely from person to person and even within the same individual. As a result, there is no generally true way to express the sensations one has during an acid trip. However, several investigations have demonstrated that an acid trip may result in any of the following:

Visual Distortions

Some individuals claim to be able to see colors far more vividly than others. Dazzling halo effects or patterns that revolve around them may attract their attention. Massive things can seem much smaller than they are, and vice versa. Even inanimate things might seem to move at times.

Hallucinations

During an acid trip, a person’s senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste, or scent may lead them astray and cause them to perceive something that isn’t there. It might be difficult to distinguish between hallucinations and reality at times. These hallucinations might generate relaxing, comfortable sensations but also induce negative feelings.

Mood Swings

A person may feel an intense connection to and affection for other people or things. Conversely, they may become fearful, paranoid, or angry at others. These feelings may shift rapidly, causing intense mood swings.

Physical Changes

During the acid trip, people may have an increased heart rate, high blood pressure, and profuse sweating. There is also often a total absence of hunger for the duration of the trip.

Acid Trip: How Long Does It Last, and What Does It Feel Like? | OC Revive

The Comedown

The comedown is the period following the wearing off of the initial high. Coming down from an acid trip may have various severe emotional consequences. The individual may likely desire to find another way to recreate their exhilaration and pleasure while high. This may encourage some individuals to seek short-term gratification via gambling, retail therapy, or dining out.

A person experiencing a comedown should attempt to relax and sip caffeine-free drinks. Dehydration may occur due to increased sweat and body warmth caused by an acid trip. As a result, rehydrating after an acid trip is critical.

The Afterglow

Some individuals experience an “afterglow” effect long after the comedown has started. The lack of hallucinations or mood swings does not rule out the possibility of experiencing more enjoyment than is customary for the person.

It’s conceivable that your good mood may endure for many weeks. This has encouraged research on the effectiveness of psychedelics such as LSD as depression therapies. While some individuals may have a positive aftereffect after a good trip, this is not guaranteed for everyone.

When people use acid for the first time, they may be oblivious to what to anticipate. Some people may be scared or apprehensive about this, while others may be excited. A user’s innermost feelings are likely to influence their acid trip. Some persons with anxiety or stress difficulties may discover that being on an acid trip worsens their symptoms. Those who can balance excitement and relaxation while on a trip are more likely to enjoy themselves. But it’s hard to predict how things will turn out before they happen.

Contrary to a good trip, a bad trip describes when someone consumes acid and has a horrible experience. They may have hallucinations, which heighten their anxiety, panic, suicidal thoughts, or fear of death. A bad trip may cause a person’s vision of the world to become warped, resulting in paranoia and, in extreme cases, violent outbursts.

Those who have seen or experienced the impacts of mental diseases such as schizophrenia or psychosis in their family or themselves should avoid using acid. A bad trip with long-term unpleasant consequences, such as flashbacks, may be more prevalent in those with certain genetic predispositions.

Some trips might start as good trips but quickly devolve into bad ones. That’s why bringing along a reliable friend who won’t ditch you halfway through your acid trip is a good idea.

Acid Trip: How Long Does It Last, and What Does It Feel Like? | OC Revive

Risks and Side Effects of Acid Trip

The use of acid may result in arrest, prosecution, and the development of a criminal record since it is a controlled substance. Furthermore, since it is unlawful, the government has no control over its security or strength. It may be hard to determine a person’s dosage with exact confidence.

The user may be unaware that the acid contains additional medications such as opioids or hallucinogens and potentially dangerous impurities. Depending on the strength of the medicine, the patient may get a higher or lower dose than intended.

When under the influence of acid, it is normal for people to shut out the world around them. They might have a drastically warped vision of the world and endanger themselves or others. For example, a person may not see that they are about to cross a busy street or are precariously leaning out of a second-story window.

Even though tolerance to acid may develop, the chemical itself is not physiologically addictive. And with tolerance, the more a person uses, the fewer effects they feel. So, to get the same “high,” a higher dose of the medication may be necessary, which might be harmful.

Also,  hallucinogen usage has been linked to a state known as hallucinogen-induced persistent psychosis (HPPD). After using acid, HPPD may cause visual flashbacks, the impression of moving objects, and “halos” of light, all illusions created by the human eye when none exist.

The Way Forward

While a bad trip may be devastating, a good trip can offer you immeasurable joy. However, there is no way of knowing if someone who has already used acid will have a good or bad experience the next time they try it.

Acid does not pose the same risks to the body as other opioids. On the other hand, people who are more prone to mental illness may discover that trip negatively impacts their mental health. If you are struggling to quit acid use, it is best to seek professional help.
