When it comes to airport lounges in the U.S., the Centurion Lounge from American Express tops the list as one of the best spaces to relax, grab a bit to eat, and get work done before your flight.

The Centurion Lounge at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is one of the latest Centurion Lounge offerings in the U.S., and is the nicest lounge within the airport complex.

We’ll be taking a look at what makes this lounge special, how you can access it, and what you can expect once inside.

The Centurion Lounge is located in Terminal 4 , across from gate B22. Phoenix’s airport is quite large, with multiple piers stemming off from a large central walkway on both sides. For a visual look at where the lounge is located, it is the farthest pier to the right once you come out of Terminal 4 security, about midway down the pier on your right-hand side.

Amex Centurion Lounge PHX Entry

This pier specifically houses many of American Airlines’ smaller regional jet flights, though there are a few gates down at the end that are equipped to handle wide-body and international flights, so you’ll also see airlines like WestJet and British Airways departing from this area as well. If you’re traveling on one of American’s mainline (larger jet flights) or on Southwest, you may have a bit of a walk to get to your departing gate, so be sure to allow plenty of time (though you won’t need to re-clear security).

If you’re traveling on an airline out of Terminal 3 (such as Delta or United), this is in a separate part of the airport where you’ll need to re-enter security. While you can access Terminal 4 with a boarding pass for a flight out of Terminal 3, it is a lengthy process to switch terminals, and probably isn’t advised in most circumstances, unless you arrive very early for your flight.

If you find yourself in any of these other cities, you’ll also be able to enjoy the Centurion Lounge experience:

This Centurion Lounge is open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. If you’re flying outside of these times, consider using the nearby American Airlines Admirals Club  or Escape Lounge – The Centurion Studio Partner , if you have access. For all of your other options, check out our full list of lounges at PHX .

Like all Centurion Lounges, you must follow a series of requirements to get in.

Interestingly, this Centurion Lounge is hosted directly next to an Escape Lounge . This lounge, also accessible with your American Express card, has different entry requirements, though the check-in desks are next to each other. As you enter the sliding doors, be sure to visit the desk marked with the Centurion Lounge logo if you’re using the Centurion Lounge.

Amex Centurion Lounge PHX Check In

Access Policy

You’ll need one of the following American Express cards to enter the Centurion Lounge:

  • The Platinum Card ® from American Express
  • The Business Platinum Card ® from American Express
  • Centurion Card ® from American Express
  • Delta SkyMiles ® Reserve American Express Card (when you book your Delta flight with your Delta Reserve card)
  • Delta SkyMiles ® Reserve Business American Express Card (when you book your Delta flight with your Delta Reserve Business card)

Hot Tip:  Check to see if you’re eligible for a welcome bonus offer of up to 125k (or 150k) points with the Amex Platinum. The current public offer is 80,000 points. (This targeted offer was independently researched and may not be available to all applicants.)

You’ll need your American Express card in hand, as well as your boarding pass and a government-issued ID.

Unlike many lounges worldwide, the American Express Centurion Lounge has a few additional access requirements:

  • You need to be on a flight within 3 hours to use the lounge space. Don’t arrive too early in the day, or you won’t be allowed to visit, so be sure to time your arrival by the 3-hour mark.
  • You need to be on a departing flight , not an arriving flight. While some lounges allow you to visit before or after your flight, the Centurion Lounge will only let you visit before your flight.
  • Using the lounge on a connection is fine. If you’re coming into Phoenix from another destination and then flying onward to another city, you’re more than welcome to use the lounge space.
  • You need to have a confirmed seat on a flight and can’t be flying on standby. This is noteworthy for airline employees who tend to fly on space-available passes.

Lounge Guest Policy

  • Amex Platinum card and Amex Business Platinum cardmembers may enter with up to 2 complimentary guests if they have spent $75,000 in eligible purchases in a calendar year. Otherwise, a guest day pass can be purchased for $50 per adult or $30 per child between the ages of 2 and 17.
  • Centurion cardmembers may enter with up to 2 guests or immediate family (spouse or domestic partner, and children under 18) at no additional charge.
  • Delta Reserve cardholders may bring up to 2 guests at a per-visit rate of $50 per person, per location.
  • Amex Platinum card, Amex Business Platinum card, and Centurion cardmembers may purchase a day pass for any additional guests for $50.

You’ve got these amenities to enjoy:

  • High-speed Wi-Fi
  • Locally-inspired cuisine
  • Magazines and newspapers
  • Premium bar
  • Print, fax, and copy services

The Lounge Space

The Phoenix Centurion Lounge is one of the smallest Centurion Lounge spaces there is, so there’s not a ton of room to walk around. As you pass the reception desk, you’ll go left or right at the green plant wall familiar in most American Express lounges. Behind this wall is a large seating area featuring private seating, traditional couches, a conference table, and a mixed variety of tables and chairs.

Disappointingly, this lounge doesn’t really have any private rooms to take a conference call or meet with colleagues.

Amex Centurion Lounge PHX Conference Table

To the right of this seating area are the bathrooms, and you’ll find separate facilities for both men and women.

Interestingly, this lounge shares a shower room with the nearby Escape Lounge , and the reservation process is first-come-first-served. The shower room is located in a shared space between both lounges, and because both lounges feature a variety of access privileges, it’s likely there could be a wait for the use of this room at peak hours of the day. Like other Centurion Lounges, towels and toiletries are provided complimentary for your use.

Hot Tip: If you wish to use the shower, reserve it as soon as you enter the lounge — that way you can get yourself on the waiting list if there is one.

Wi-Fi is complimentary during your visit, and you can get the password from the Member Services desk as you check in. Wi-Fi is fast throughout the lounge space, making this space a great place to get work done or download your favorite television episode before your flight.

Amex Lounge PHX Tables and Chairs

As you venture around the corner, you’ll find a large room with the lounge’s bar and food area, as well as a coffee/tea beverage station. This is the largest area of the lounge, featuring sweeping windows that look out onto the gorgeous Phoenix red-rock scenery and nearby planes.

Amex Centurion Lounge PHX Dining Area

Food is served in individual portions by an American Express staff member during the COVID-19 period, and there is a designated pathway to reach the buffet line to help with social distancing.

Hot Tip: Even though items are individually portioned, you can come back for as much as you’d like throughout your stay!

For breakfast, you can enjoy flapjacks, eggs and chorizo, muesli, smoothies, and breakfast potatoes — a hearty sampling that will certainly start your day off right. From experience, the flapjacks and smoothies are must-try items!

At the lunch and dinner hours, you can enjoy tortilla soup, marinated chicken, roasted cauliflower, spaghetti squash, and rice, among an array of salads, appetizers, and desserts.

American Express Centurion Lounge PHX Food

The bar area is located directly across from the buffet line, and you can order pretty much any drink you fancy. If you’re in the mood for something local, try these favorites:

  • Blue Door — Scotch whisky, dark rum, lemon juice, Benedictine, pastis
  • Diamondback — Arizona Distilling Park Rye Whiskey, Laird’s Apple Brandy, Green Chartreuse
  • Dusk till Dawn — Blanco Tequila, grapefruit soda, lime juice, grenadine
  • Martini Bianco — gin, Bianco Vermouth, orange bitters, olives, rosemary
  • Tito Pepe — Tito’s Vodka, Tio Pepe Fino Sherry, Chareau Aloe Liqueur
  • U.F.O. — rum, lime juice, cream soda

Hot Tip: The bar only serves a few preset breakfast cocktails during the morning hours, and the full selection doesn’t begin until the lunch food is brought out.

While technically not part of the Centurion Lounge itself, it’s important to highlight the fact that the Centurion Lounge shares a lounge complex with the nearby Escape Lounge. As you check-in downstairs, you’ll see the option to enter 1 of the 2 lounges. This Escape Lounge is available to all users of the Centurion Lounge, though you’re not allowed to switch after entry , so you’ll need to decide which you want to enter prior to heading upstairs.

The Escape Lounge actually shares the same food as the Centurion Lounge , and also shares the same shower facilities, making it a very similar offering. While the Centurion Lounge certainly is nicer and offers a few more amenities, it’s worth noting that this option exists and is easily accessible with your Amex Platinum card in case the Centurion Lounge is full or busy (which can easily happen during peak times of the day, since the Centurion Lounge is on the smaller side).

Bottom Line: If the Centurion Lounge is crowded, cardholders can use the nearby Escape Lounge without any additional entry fee.

The Centurion Lounge in Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is certainly the nicest lounge within the airport, but it’s only accessible to flyers on American Airlines, Southwest, and a few select international airlines due to its location.

If you hold an eligible Amex card and you transit Phoenix often, visiting this lounge is one of the best ways to take advantage of your cardmember benefits! The food and drink offerings are certainly better than the airline-specific lounges within the airport, and there are plenty of spaces to work or relax in before your flight.

Can't take the heat? Here are cheap flights to cool destinations from Phoenix this summer

american express travel phoenix az

When the calendar hits June, Phoenix residents long for an escape to anywhere with double-digit temperatures.

Last year, Phoenix temperatures averaged 103.3 degrees in June, 114.7 degrees in July, 109.5 degrees in August and 103.4 degrees in September, according to the National Weather Service .

Just as people from northern states and Canada flock south for the winter, people in the Valley might find themselves needing a vacation from the summer heat.

Alaska, San Francisco, Seattle and Portland, Oregon, offer much lower temperatures even in the summer months. Here's how to get cheap flights from Phoenix to these cool summer destinations on Alaska, Delta, Frontier, United and Southwest airlines.

Cheap Phoenix-Alaska flights this summer

Alaska is a very cool summer destination. The south-central region that includes Anchorage, Fairbanks and Denali National Park experiences average highs of 62 to 65 degrees from June to August, according to Alaska.org .

Alaska has no shortage of nature and outdoor activities. It's home to six national parks, including North America's tallest mountain peak at Denali and the glaciers, temperate rainforests and fjords of Glacier Bay. Anchorage has the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, a nonprofit animal sanctuary with native Alaskan animals in their natural settings.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has nonstop flights to Anchorage via Alaska Airlines. We found itineraries in June and July from $439 round trip.

You could save more if you're willing to deal with a layover; we found Delta Air Lines flights between Phoenix and Anchorage for $385 round trip from June 22-27 and $374 round trip from Aug. 22-27 with a connection in Seattle.

Alaska Airlines has round-trip flights to Fairbanks and Ketchikan for less than $400 round trip this summer; these involve layovers.

Cheap Phoenix-San Francisco flights this summer

Bordered by the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, the breezes from the waters regulate the city's temperatures. It rarely gets too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter.

Average highs between June and August 2023 ranged from 65 to 72 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The city's summer chill takes unsuspecting tourists by surprise; it was the focus of a 2022 New York Times article .

Visits to San Francisco might include walking along the Golden Gate Bridge, taking a ride on one of the city's historic cable cars, seeing Alcatraz Island or wandering to Pier 39 at Fisherman's Wharf to see the sea lions.

San Francisco frequently appears in The Arizona Republic's monthly roundups of cheap flights from Phoenix based on data from the travel website Hopper. For June, Hopper forecasted low round-trip fares near $73.

We found Frontier Airlines offered round-trip base fares of $58 for a handful of itineraries, including June 10-12; remember that Frontier, an ultra-low-cost carrier, charges low base fares with additional fees for seat assignments, carry-on and checked bags and other amenities.

Other airlines have deals on nonstop flights to San Francisco, too. We found round-trip tickets with United Airlines for Aug. 10-13 available from $119, and with Southwest Airlines for Aug. 20-24 for $120.

Cheap Phoenix-Seattle flights this summer

While Seattle has experienced warmer than usual summers in recent years − and is forecast to have another one in 2024 − it remains a cooler getaway for people looking to escape the triple digits of Phoenix. The average June-August temperature in the city was just under 67 degrees in 2023, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Seattle is best known for iconic destinations like Pike Place Market and the Space Needle, while Chihuly Garden and Glass and the Museum of Pop Culture are also popular. For outdoor lovers, Mount Rainier National Park is an 80-mile drive from the city center, while Olympic National Park is about 111 miles.

Frontier Airlines has round-trip base fares as low as $60 for some June and August itineraries. Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines advertised round trips near $120 for Aug. 8-12.

Cheap Phoenix-Portland, Oregon, flights this summer

Like Seattle, Portland can get hot in the summer but not Phoenix hot. Average June-August temperatures in 2023 were around 72 degrees, according to NOAA.

Portland draws visitors for its hundreds of gardens, including the country's oldest continuously operating public rose test garden; Powell's City of Books, the world's largest independent bookstore; and a dining scene that includes the popular gourmet dessert chains Voodoo Doughnut and Salt & Straw . It's close to many natural landmarks in Oregon including Multnomah Falls, Mount Hood and Cannon Beach.

Frontier Airlines has round-trip base fares from $98 for June 8-11. Southwest offers round-trip fares from $120 for Aug. 12-15.

New flights from Phoenix

More flight options in Phoenix are springing up, including  JSX's new route to Dallas ,  American Airlines' new flight to Provo, Utah ,  expanded flights to Mexico  and  JetBlue Airways' expanded East Coast routes  with business class seating.
