Shop TODAY editors and travel experts swear by these anti-theft products while traveling

anti theft travel gear

The heart-dropping, stomach-sinking moment in "Home Alone" when the McCallister family realizes Kevin was forgotten isn't one that many can relate to. However, while traveling , many of us can relate to the head-scratching moments when we ask ourselves, "Did I leave something behind?"

What's even worse than forgetting to pack certain valuables is having them stolen from right under your nose and having nothing to blame but your easy-to-access bag or luggage. The best anti-theft products employ various protective features and aim to resolve these problems while helping you keep better track of your belongings.

Shop TODAY spoke with Mitra Amirzadeh and Katie Jackson, two seasoned travelers, to get their insight on what anti-theft products they trust to keep their valuables safe (and what you should be looking out for when shopping).

What do anti-theft features look like?

Anti-theft features might not always be obvious (for example, a subtle combination lock on a suitcase). They're worth it, though. Here are a few examples of some anti-theft characteristics in backpacks, luggage and more:

  • Zippers: Zippers on anti-theft bags might be hidden, such as a backpack with a zipper in the back rather than the front. There are also hard-to-find zippers that tuck into the bag itself, making them difficult to access.
  • Pockets: Amirzadeh appreciates a backpack with a rear-loading pocket rather than a traditional front compartment, as it makes it harder to pickpocket.
  • Bluetooth trackers: Both Jackson and Amirzadeh put their trust in Bluetooth trackers that they add to luggage, which they are able to access from their phones. The Apple AirTag was rated as one of the best travel accessories during Shop TODAY's Travel Awards in 2023, making it one that both Shop TODAY editors and travel experts trust.

What should consumers keep in mind when shopping for anti-theft products?

In order to stay one step ahead, Jackson assumes the position and mindset of a thief when shopping for these products.

She says, "What would you look for if you were going to steal a bag or its contents? Then, shop for a bag that doesn’t have those blind spots." Jackson continues, "If your bag is slightly inconvenient for you to open, that may be annoying, but in the long run it’s worth it if it prevents a thief from stealing your valuables."

This is one of the reasons why Jackson bought the Cotopaxi Allpa pack : because the zippers tuck into a loop.

Additionally, Amirzadeh has noticed an uptick in passengers carrying hip packs across the front of their bodies to clearly see and access their items. Plus, keeping your valuables in front of you helps reduce the likeliness that a thief will unzip your bag from behind.

"I think carrying your passport , your cellphone and your wallet in a hip bag that is towards the front of you, or a crossbody bag that you’re wearing across your chest, is a really good idea; you’re less likely to get your stuff stolen that way," she says.

  • Opens from the top
  • Many hidden pockets inside
  • Zippers aren't hidden

According to Amanda Fama , a commerce editor at Shop TODAY, this one "extremely roomy" backpack. It has a unique design that opens from the top, and the handles above can be secured together. Plus, there are various pockets throughout the interior.

"I used this backpack often for traveling and commuting with my laptop, and I always felt confident that my items were secure," She says. "Plus, it's roomy enough to fit clothes and shoes for weekend trips."

INICAT Crossbody Leather Bag

INICAT Small Crossbody Sling Bag

  • "Functional and secure"
  • Won't give off tourist vibes
  • Logo is visible

This crossbody bag features two zippered pouches in the front and one in the back, which is why associate editor Shannon Garlin trusted it with her go-to ' s when traveling abroad.

"This large (but not too large)  crossbody bag  has become the star of my latest trip abroad," she says. "Not only did I get tons of compliments from friends, but also it fit everything I needed for a day exploring a foreign city, all while feeling secure!"

Quince Check-In Hard Shell Suitcase

Check-In Hard Shell Suitcase

Check-In Hard Shell Suitcase

  • Chic design
  • Can scuff quickly

Usually we associate Quince with affordable luxury fabrics and basics, but did you know they make travel products as well? From packing cubes to duffel bags and more, the brand is proving to be more than a go-to for reasonably priced clothing items.

Associate editor Allie Wise owns this hard shell suitcase, that's available in four different carry-on sizes and five colors.

"I received a sample of this suitcase in tan and I have not traveled with any other suitcase since," she says. "I absolutely love how well it rolls through the airport- almost too good! It also has a TSA-approved lock to safely store all your valuables."

Samsonite Outline Pro Medium Spinner

Samsonite Outline Pro Medium Spinner

This spinner won a Shop TODAY Travel Gear Award for best splurge suitcase.

  • The lock is easy to set up
  • Holds a lot, easy to clean
  • None to note at this time

Well-loved by Shop TODAY editors during our Travel Awards in 2023, this medium-sized suitcase was the first time that associate editor Kamari Stewart had used one that included anti-theft features.

"This suitcase is my tried-and-true favorite," she says. "I bought it two years ago and I take it literally everywhere. Aside from the massive amount of stuff that fits in what they call a 'medium,' I love the TSA-safe lock it has."

This 360-degree roller has a three-digit lock that you can use to secure your items.

"It was super easy to set up and has been a breeze to use ever since," she says. "It definitely provides me with peace of mind on longer/farther trips where I’m always scared of it getting stolen."

Expert-recommended anti-theft products

Apple airtag.

Apple AirTag

Winner: Best tech for checked bags

  • "Game-changer"
  • Affordable, reasonably priced
  • Audio alert is quiet

Both Jackson and Amirzadeh swear by Apple AirTags to help keep track of their items, whether they’re in the overhead bins above them or stowed away under the carriage.

“While they won’t deter theft, they provide some semblance of hope that if our bags do go missing, they’ll at least be trackable,” Jackson says.

They’re available individually or in four-packs, which is convenient if you have multiple bags or family members with things to keep track of.

“I like knowing that if I accidentally walk away from my backpack or luggage that my phone’s going to go off, because where do we go without our phone? Absolutely nowhere. I like that it tells me ‘Hey, you might have left this item behind,’” says Amirzadeh.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack

Allpa 35L Travel Pack

Allpa 35L Travel Pack

  • Super spacious
  • Can be bulky

Jackson purchased this multi-tasking pack after nearly getting pickpocketed abroad and praises its zippers, a quality that is often overlooked in luggage.

“The zippers don’t lock, per se, but they tuck away, so you can’t open them unless you’re at the right angle and they take several seconds to undo,” she says.

This pack opens up like a suitcase, with zippered mesh compartments on each side that can fit a week or two weeks’ worth of clothing and items. Plus, it has loops on either side of the compartments to tuck your zipper into so they’re harder to access.

ThinkTank BackStory Backpack

BackStory™ 15

BackStory™ 15

  • Rear loading compartment
  • Is bulky, but holds equipment

This is Amirzadeh’s choice when it comes to carting her camera equipment around. With a rear-loading compartment that includes 15 panels to store cameras and accessories, she’s able to travel from country to country without fear of her items getting stolen.

“All of my gear goes in the reverse panels and I fill the backpack from behind, so all the zippers are up against my back, instead of out there where you could be behind me in line and unzip it,” she says.

Imagine walking around Barcelona, immersing yourself in the sights and sounds. You pick the best Tapas bar from your second-hand guide book, sit down to a meal that dazzles your senses, have an interesting conversation with a local, then get up to pay the bill.

Except when you reach for your wallet, there is nothing there but empty fabric.

Or perhaps, you reach for your handy neck pouch only to find your neck longing for coverage.

Maybe you reach into your shoulder bag to find your hand comes right out the other end through a precisely cut hole; your wallet and everything else vanished into thin air.

Have you ever had your passport stolen? Ever had your check on luggage rifled through or your hostel room broken into? Hopefully not.

Still, it happens and if it has happened to you, then you know its no fun.

What’s worse, losing your belongings or having them stolen can be a huge headache to deal with while on vacation.

One day you’re sipping fruit cocktails on the beach, the next you are freezing in the over-air-conditioned lobby of an uncomfortable embassy lobby.

Take some time to familiarize yourself with a few safety and anti-theft travel gear essentials to help make your next trip more secure before you even leave the ground.

What Is RFID? And Why We Left It Off The List

When researching how to stay safe while traveling, one of the first things that usually comes up is something called RFID or RFID blocking wallets and bags.

RFID stands for Radio-Frequency Identification. It is a technology that uses electromagnetic fields to transmit and read information. This technology is used in almost everything.

Electromagnetic tags are embedded into objects such as packages, scannable ID badges, electronic keys, hotel key cards, and most concerning for the modern traveler, your credit card or Passport.

An RFID tag both sends and receives information.

When triggered by an RFID reader, the tag transmits information to the reader. Generally, this information is in the form of a unique identifying number.

You can think of it like an invisible barcode.

With RFID the scanner doesn’t need to physically see or scan the code, it just has to be within the vicinity to trigger and pick up the signal.

This sounds like a great idea, and it is when it comes to tracking packages or products.

When applied to our credit cards and personal information, however, it can pose a potential threat.

Theoretically, a thief could scan your credit card or passport while it is still in your pocket, running off on a shopping spree before you know what hit you.

While this is possible, and there are lots of videos out there showing just how, it is actually somewhat unlikely and fairly easy to prevent.

For the type of RFID tag in passports and credit cards, the scanner must be a minimum of 6 inches away from the card with no obstructions. In a real-world situation, even on a crowded subway, this might be difficult to pull off.

According to the Bureau of Consular Affairs , passport chips are designed to only be readable when your passport is open–i.e. unreadable when in your pocket or bag.

Many experts agree that you don’t need a fancy RFID blocking wallet, a simple hack will do.

You can learn more about this simple-cheap hack and whether you should be concerned about RFID theft in our in-depth article.

The simple answer is, maybe.

If you are still unsure after reading more about it then we recommend erring on the side of caution.

Its a simple fix and there are a lot of great RFID blocking options out there—from wallets to bags , neck pouches , and clothing.

To know if your credit card is RFID enabled, look for the curved lines like the universal wifi symbol.

Credit Card With RFID Symbol

For passports, the RFID symbol looks like this:

Passport With RFID Chip Symbol

Anti-Theft Bags And Bag Locks

I am a big proponent of anti-theft bags. Tiny locks and wire-mesh covers, not so much.

Anti-theft bags actually work, you’re probably taking small day pack anyways, and they usually look cool too.

Those tiny locks and wires can be easily bypassed with a good pair of universally available wire cutters or even a moderately proficient lock picker.

In this video, he gets into the lock in seconds (@ minute 2:30).

Even the most unbreakable bag ever made, the LOCTOTE , has a small lock that is its weakness. If possible get a better lock like the Stanley or Abus . Make sure your lock at least has ball bearings and a shroud.

Look for bags with wire mesh liners (not covers) like the Pacsafe Venturesafe.

That said, nothing is theft-proof–especially if left unattended. Given enough time and the right resources, a motivated thief can get to anything.

The best prevention when traveling is awareness and vigilance.

Items listed in this article help prevent theft, but the only way to eliminate it is through your actions.

The most frequent petty crimes travelers face is ‘grab-and-run’ or ‘slash-and-run.’

Grab and run meaning someone bumps into you, drives by on a scooter, or simply runs up to you, and grabs your bag or wallet or whatever then takes off.

Slashing is a bit more sophisticated. In crowded spaces thieves can use a very sharp knife or scalpel to cut your pocket or pack open, letting your wallet slip out without you knowing.

Also, be wary of groups of people crowding around you.

I have personally seen a woman mobbed by a group of young kids trying to sell things. They were grabbing her hands and shirt to distract her, then cut her neck pouch and slipped it off without her noticing and ran off before anyone could do a thing.

Another common occurrence while you are walking around with your giant backpack on, someone can come up behind you, cut a hole in your bag, grab whatever is in reach, and be off before you even notice.

In this last situation, wire mesh would be helpful but it will also make your bag stand out compared to others, making it more of a target.

Some people will line their bag with chicken wire. That way if the bag is slashed, there is still another barrier to entry. However, a more versatile solution would be using the mesh bag protector as a liner.

This way you are not as obvious, the mesh is much easier to deal with than chicken wire, and you have the mesh to use in other situations later.

Tip: I almost always carry a small tarp or footprint and an old yoga mat when traveling. These can come in handy in a number of situations, especially when you need a clean spot to sleep or put your things.

When on the move, I always fold the yoga mat and tarp together then use them to line my bag. Like this they are out of the way and if someone did slash my bag they would then have another two layers of foam and heavy material to get through.

Tip: When packing your bag, put the least valuable things along the outside edges. This way if your bag is slashed you might have time to do something about it before they get something valuable. I put all my dirty underwear along the outside so if a thief does slash at least they get a dirty surprise!

Having a burly all around travel bag doesn’t hurt either. Thieves usual work on opportunity. A super-thin lightweight bag is a much easier target than a heavy-duty one.

For your day excursions, the anti-theft travel bags listed below provide slash resistance with sophisticated pockets and zippers so you can explore with confidence.

Anti-theft, Pickpocket Proof, And Secret Compartment Clothing

First, do they work? Yes, they do.

Most pickpocket-proof clothing consists of redundancy to make things harder for thieves.

This means the material might be slash-proof and/or the pocket closes with a zipper which is hidden by a flap that is then closed by a button.

The more barriers to entry, the more redundancy, the safer your items.

But as mentioned before, all these items are tools. They do not replace awareness and vigilance.

A talented pickpocket will get what they want regardless of how sophisticated your shorts are.

Still, these garments work well and are stylish too. If you are looking for that one pair of travel pants, shorts, or a travel shirt try one from the list.

Secret compartments add an extra layer of redundancy to protection of the valuables you carry on you.

Often this will be pockets inside a shirt or underwear invisible from the outside. Or, it can be another piece of lightweight clothing worn under your regular clothing.

The Eazy Mate travel band is a good example.

Anti-theft organizers (often simply called money belts) are those little pouches that look like skinny fanny-packs you see people tucking into their pants or hanging around their necks.

These little pouches can be indispensable travel accessories that come in a number of different styles and types.

If you choose one that is worn around the neck or shoulder, even if you intend to wear it under your clothes, ensure it has slash-proof straps.

The Best Anti-Theft Travel Gear

Clothing arts .

The pants that Forbes called “The CIA version of khakis.” Clothing Arts specializes in innovative-ultra secure travel wear. They make simple yet stylish anti-theft travel clothing that functions well and feels great.

All their clothing is made of soft-breathable water-resistant nylon featuring slash-resistant back pockets.

Below are a few favorites, but Clothing Arts also makes convertible pants if that’s what you are looking for.

Men’s/Women’s Adventure Travel Pants

These classics offer the most security, have 11 pockets (including 5 triple secure pockets), and two cargo pockets.

Women’s Travel Wrap Skirt

It is not often you find stylish women’s travel clothing that also has cleverly hidden pockets. This skirt from Clothing Arts features 5 hidden zipper-secured pockets and plush cotton-like nylon.

Take a look at the dress if you want something a little more elegant.

Clothing Arts Anti Theft Travel Skirt Apparel

Clothing Arts also makes travel jeans. They are dad-jeans for sure, but they work. You can also find the same cargo-style used in their classic pants as durable utility shorts.

If you are looking for something a little more stylish with slightly higher quality, check out Pashko’s Explorer Adventure pants.

For women the Ultra Comfortable Travel pants or the Insanely Comfy Long-Haul Flight Pants.

Pashko Stylish Anti Theft Travel Pants

Secret compartment clothing works slightly differently than the anti-theft options above.

This type of clothing works to limit theft attempts by preventing a potential thief from even knowing there is something there in the first place. Or at least, it prevents them from knowing exactly where on your person that item is.

EZ Mate Travel & Running Belt

A simple and multi-functional item in this category is the EZ Mate travel band. There are a number of different variations on this band, but the EZ Mate is one of the only ones with two zippered pockets instead of just one.

Find it here.

Nathan Zipster

Another great running style waist belt is the Nathan Zipster. Although intended for long-distance running, this is a low profile belt that features to full-length zip pockets for safety.

Other options include secret compartment bras, tank tops/undershirts, and underwear.

I will say this, the underwear seems like a great idea, but when you’ve got a passport and some other hard objects with corners in there, it can be a little uncomfortable.

Cubed Travel Jacket

The same company mentioned above, Clothing Arts, makes a well thought out unisex waterproof travel jacket with 4 internal hidden pockets and a removable hood.

They also make travel shirts with secure pockets for both men and women.

One of the original anti-theft travel gear companies, Pacsafe offers a wide selection of travel safety products built to stand up to thieves no matter the situation.

Pacsafe Venturesafe GII 25 liter

This little pack has it all; wire reinforced straps, locking zippers, RFID blocking, pockets galore, and Pacsafe’s eXomesh technology integrating stainless steel wire into the fabric to prevent slash-and-run attacks.

If this pack isn’t quite your style, Pacsafe is still a solid brand to go with. As mentioned, Pacsafe makes a lot of high-quality travel gear. See more of what they have to offer .

Find Pacsafe at Backcountry.com

LOCTOTE: The Toughest Bag Ever Made

The LOCTOTE Flak Sack might literally be the strongest bag ever made. All their bags are made with high-rating slash-resistant material, steel wire reinforced straps, RFID blocking technology, and include a lock.

The Flak Sack has a 12-liter volume. If you are looking for something a little larger with a bit more style, the Cinch Pack has a 22-liter volume.

These packs are not cheap, but if you get one and don’t lose it, chances are it will last forever.

Don’t believe they are tough? Here are just a few videos of people putting them to the test. The LOCTOTE website has an entire page dedicated to testing the limits of these bags.

Find all LOCTOTE bags here.

Whether you want it for security or simply for organization, a good travel pouch is an essential piece of travel gear. Most often you will find people with the slim fanny-pack style pouches. But these are too obvious and can still be cut without you noticing.

Eagle Creek Undercover Hidden Pocket

Eagle Creek Anti Theft Safety Pouch

My go-to style is this type of pouch. It hooks on your belt then flips inside your pants. These are simple, inexpensive, and near impossible to steal once flipped inside your pants.

You can slide it along your belt placing it wherever is most comfortable for you.

Bra-Stash

Another unique option is something like the Eagle Creek Undercover Bra Stash or the Pacsafe Coversafe S25. These simple pouches can clip onto a bra or any piece of material that fits into the clip, allowing you the flexibility to stash your documents and cards where it suits you.

Wrist Wallets & Organizers

If you are looking for something you can carry with more compartments that will fit your passport and then some Pacsafe offers two fantastic options.

The RFID Safe Compact Organizer is a durable option with plenty of space to organize your cards, passport, and money with room to spare.

For a slightly more stylish pouch that opens horizontally like a file cabinet for added discretion, the City Safe Zip Wristlet Wallet is a beautiful and functional option.

Pacsafe Anti-theft Gear Travel Organizer

Sometimes when traveling you don’t end up staying in the most secure places. These mini-door jambs add an extra layer of security when you are feeling unsure about your accommodations.

When staying at Airbnb’s or similar, you might worry about who else has a key, these portable door jams can help stop unwanted entries.

Neither of these options is going to stop the SWAT team, but they will at the least give you warning of an unwanted intruder and possibly foil an aggressive one.

It should be mentioned, both portable door jambs only work if the door opens towards you.

The Door Jammer

Available in two sizes, Travel and Lockdown, The Door Jammer is a solid piece of equipment for added peace of mind.

The travel door jammer is smaller than most mobile phones and weighs only 7.4 oz/210 g.

The Door Jammer is height adjustable and much more versatile than the Addalock.

It might be the case that your door frame is flimsy or cracked, in this case, the door jammer will still do its job just the same.

Here is how it works:

Addalock

The Addalock is slimmer more packable alternative the Door Jammer, weighing in at 4.2 oz/119 g.

By hooking into the door’s strike (the metal hole where the door latches into the frame) the Addalock blocks the door from opening even when a key is used.

Setup is pretty simple and as long as the frame is solid the door will stay closed to mildly aggressive force.

Here is the Addalock in action:

Flashlight Or Headlamp

A flashlight seems like an obvious item to bring along but it is amazing how often you find people traveling without one.

Even outside of emergencies, a flashlight can come in handy for reading in a hostel at night, getting up in the middle of the night, or finding something in your pack on a dark airplane.

Personally, I always sleep with my headlamp around my neck when traveling. By far the best headlamp I have ever owned is the Black Diamond Iota.

Iota Headlamp For Travel And Outdoors

It is water-resistant, USB rechargeable, super light, has a lockout, and lasts a long time on one charge.

A drained flashlight battery will leave you in the dark when you need it most. For traveling, try your best to get a light with a lockout feature.

This means there is some way to lock the light so it doesn’t accidentally turn on while in your pack.

UV Water Bottle

Speaking of light, a little handheld UV light can’t hurt. You are probably thinking of packing a water bottle anyway, why not bring a UV water bottle.

UV water bottles and UV water filters can safely sanitize clear to slightly less than clear water, making it safe for drinking.

This is especially handy when you traveling somewhere that does have running water but it is not necessarily potable water.

With a UV water bottle like the LARQ you can have your water and drink it too.

LARQ bottles are lightweight, insulated, USB rechargeable, and feature an indicator light for safety. LARQ is also a member of 1% for the planet.

LARQ portable uv light water purifier bottle

If you would rather carry a portable UV filter, the Steripen Ultralight is a great option. Either way, don’t let the toilet be the only sculpture you see on your next trip.

Chances are you are going to use the internet at some point while you are traveling.

Hostels, hotels, and coffee shops are hotspots for hackers to get into your data through insecure wifi networks. A VPN can help eliminate that risk.

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. A VPN essentially sends your traffic through a series of private encrypted tunnels which make you both more anonymous and less vulnerable to attacks.

There are a number of reliable VPNs available for both mobile phones and laptops. Two of the highest-rated are Cyber Ghost VPN and Express VPN.

Note: VPNs are not 100% hack-proof but they do significantly increase your online security.

Traveling should be fun. Don’t let thieves ruin your adventure. Head out the door prepared with this list of essential anti-theft travel gear.

Protect your documents with a hidden travel organizer or money belt. Most travel gear today comes with RFID blocking technology, but if you can also follow a simple tested hack to help keep your information safe.

Find the perfect pair of pickpocket-proof travel pants or shirts from Clothing Arts, Poshko, or Pacsafe.

If you want the most indestructible day pack ever manufactured, check out the LOCTOTE Flak Pak or Cinch Pack. For a more all-around pack the Pacsafe is a great choice.

Should security become an issue for you at your hostel or Airbnb, the lightweight Door Jammer or Addalock can help keep doors closed to unwanted intruders.

Don’t leave home without a flashlight or headlamp. Get one with a lockout function so you don’t find your battery drained when you need it most. The Black Diamond Iota is my all-time favorite.

A UV water bottle purifiers will help keep the bugs out of your gut and your face out of the toilet. Bottles like the LARQ are rechargeable and lightweight.

Cybercrime is a huge threat even at home. Use a trusted VPN like Cyber Ghost VPN to keep your information safe while accessing public wifi abroad.

I hope you found something in this article you can use for your next adventure. If you did, share it with your friends so they can use it too!

We would love to hear from you here at Crux Range. What is your favorite piece of anti-theft travel gear?

Backpacks are super handy for carrying everything you need while traveling. The contents we pack into them are becoming increasingly expensive, though: Our smartphones are worth several hundred dollars, and our tablets and laptops are worth far more. If you’re toting your tech around where pickpockets are prevalent, you’ll want to keep things secure so you don’t have to deal with an unpleasant theft that interrupts your vacation. Luckily, brilliant designers have you covered: Anti-theft backpacks are more secure than ever with features like locking zippers, RFID-blocking technology, and even slash-proof material. And aesthetically, we’re happy to announce that these backpacks have graduated beyond basic black and gray to become increasingly stylish.

We researched some of the best options on the market and then took them to our New York testing lab. First, we packed them full of the kind of essential belongings for which one might use an anti-theft backpack. Then we did everything possible to break into them, including some slash tests. The top performers made it onto our list.

Best overall, pacsafe venturesafe exp45 econyl.

Comfortable to carry

Easy to pack and unpack

Held up well during our slash test

Pacsafe is an industry leader in anti-theft backpacks, and honestly, you can't go wrong with any of their styles (we've got more than one featured here). For travel in particular, however, we love their Venturesafe EXP45L. Besides the fact it's now made from recycled nylon, giving it some eco points, it's carry-on size: You won't need to bring both a bag for your gear and a carry-on for your clothes, which makes a difference when it comes to reducing stress on a busy day of travel. The backpack meets most airlines' carry-on requirements (as always, check ahead!). It has a large main compartment for clothes, a sleeve built for a 15-inch laptop, organization for your cables and USBs, and even places outside the bag to secure bulky things like sleeping bags, jackets, or yoga mats . There are also attachment points inside for wallets and keys and a side pocket that lets you keep a water bottle or umbrella close at hand. As for anti-theft measures, Pacsafe has the bases covered with lockable zippers, an anchor cable that can lock around a fixed object (like the leg of a table), and cut-resistant materials.

Of all the bags we tested in our Brooklyn lab, this backpack earned the highest marks. Our testers loved the pack's well-cushioned handles and the 270-degree clamshell opening. "The Pacsafe Venturesafe Carry-On Travel Pack is an ideal option for backpackers hopping from hostel to hostel," one tester noted. "It has many great anti-theft features, including lockable zippers, a stainless steel locking cable that you can attach to any fixture and cut-resistant materials. Plus, with chest and hip belts and padded straps, you can carry about a week's worth of clothes and other travel essentials without breaking your back." Our testers did report a learning curve for the zipper lock. They recommend spending some time with it at home before taking it on a trip.

Dimensions: 21.7 x 13.8 x 8.7 inches | Weight: 3 pounds, 13 ounces | Capacity: 45 liters | Waterproof: Yes

Best Overall, Runner-Up

Pacsafe metrosafe ls350 daypack.

Reduced environmental impact

Comfortable shoulder straps

Can lock around various items

Not as durable as the brand claims

Water bottle holder could be larger

If you're looking for an anti-theft pack that offers the same quality and toughness as our overall winner in a smaller package, Pacsafe's Metrosafe 15L backpack is worth a look. This pack features lockable zippers, cut-resistant materials, and an RFID-blocking pocket. Bonus: This bag also features Pacsafe's eco-friendly ECONYL fiber, a regenerated material made from fishing nets and other nylon products.

Like its larger sibling, the Venturesafe EXP45, the Metrosafe 15L earned top marks from our testers. They enjoyed the pack's soft padding, even if the straps were difficult to adjust. "The Pacsafe Metrosafe 15L Travel Backpack has it all," one tester glowed. "Padded shoulder straps and back for hours-long city excursions, a zipper lock to protect your belongings from casual pickpocketing, and enough space to fit your travel essentials. Plus, there's a small, lockable hook to attach the bag to any fixture, say a hostel bed or table leg—no need to worry about your backpack getting snatched."

Our testers did have issues with the external water bottle pocket, which wasn't big enough to hold a standard-sized water bottle. And while the pack is slash-proof, the outer shell tore easily during testing.

Dimensions: 16.5 x 11.6 x 4.9 inches | Weight: 1 pound, 7.4 ounces | Capacity: 15 liters | Waterproof: Not listed

Best Budget

Ambor travel laptop backpack, 17.3 inch anti theft.

Smart capabilities

Laptop pocket holds pretty much any device

Not waterproof

Doesn’t stand on its own while empty

While we love the low price tag on this bag, the genius behind its design has thought of everything, too. It has the essential anti-theft features—think a fixed passcode lock and a hidden pocket on the back for super-valuable things like passports and wallets—plus a ton of perks that make your travel day more effortless, like a USB charging port and headphone jack, a laptop compartment for computers up to 17.3 inches, and S-curve straps that help take the weight off your shoulders.

"The Ambor Anti-Theft Laptop Backpack is roomy, versatile, and comfortable to carry for long stretches of time," one of our testers reported. "With laptop and tablet compartments, a built-in USB cord, and several pockets for organization, the bag makes traveling for work a breeze. And when you're ready to hit the streets, the spacious interior and padded straps and back make it easy to carry all your essentials."

The one issue our testers found was that the headphone jack was not universally compatible. But they did love the combination zipper lock and the size of the bag, saying, "This is a roomy bag that can go from the plane to the office or for a day of sightseeing."

Dimensions : 19.5 x 12.5 x 5.3 inches | Weight: 1.65 pounds | Capacity: Not listed | Waterproof: No

Best for Commuting

Kopack laptop backpack.

Super lightweight

Great organization

Keeps laptop out of reach

Won’t hold large gaming laptops

Kopack's budget-friendly laptop backpack will protect your gear—and keep thieves away. It fits up to a 15.6-inch laptop with a dedicated home in the back of the bag, right against your body. The zipper can also be locked to keep things secure. There's a USB port built into the backpack with an inner cable to charge your devices, though you'll need to use a power bank (not included). The dual-layer zipper that opens the main compartment is puncture-proof, and plenty of pockets hold everything else you need for the day, from tablets to sunscreen. Bonus: The pack is water-resistant.

Our testers liked some unique features of this bag, like the straps fitting over the zipper, making it impossible to open while on someone's back. "The number of pockets is helpful if you have a lot of stuff to bring into the office or a remote setup," one tester noted. A quick slash did nothing to the pack, but we could cut the backpack with effort. A nitpick was that the water bottle holder was a bit too narrow, and we struggled to fit a 20-ounce bottle in it. Still, "For those commuting to an office, this simple backpack is it," one tester concluded.

Dimensions: 11.8 x 4.3 x 17.7 inches | Weight: 1.56 pounds | Capacity: Not listed | Waterproof: Yes

Best Eco-Friendly

Peak design travel backpack 45l.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5

Fits enough clothes for a small trip

Shoulder straps easily slip from adjustment loops

Peak Design's Travel Backpack has some genius features to ward off thieves and will set your mind at ease. In addition to the backpack's innovative details (there are straps and pockets for pretty much everything), this model expands from a modest 35-liter size for a day of exploring to a 45-liter size that still meets most international carry-on requirements. Thanks to its impressively weatherproof material, you won't have to worry about rain either. And about those anti-theft features: The zipper tabs are designed to deter any potential thieves, the laptop pocket sits closest to your back, and a special hidden pocket keeps your passport secure. It also doesn't hurt how sleek-looking this backpack is.

While our testers appreciated the number of features, they were also somewhat overwhelmed. They noted needing the instruction manual to help fully understand how to pack it properly. They were also frustrated with how tough it was to unlock and access items. "Once the bag is locked, it's not easy to access it, which is great to prevent theft, but not ideal for the bag owner who may want easy access," a tester noted. "There are many options to expand and compress the bag to your packing style, but the anti-theft features make the bag a bit frustrating to use," another said.

Still, this bag checked all the anti-theft and packing boxes for the eco-conscious backpacker or hostel hopper. It's made with a 100 percent recycled 40-denier nylon canvas shell, and our testers reported being able to fit at least a week's worth of clothes and items in it. Our advice: Spend some time getting to know this pack and its lock features before taking it on a trip. But if you're looking for a rugged, planet-friendly pack that can be tossed around, this is it.

Dimensions: 22 x 13 x 9.5 inches (compressed), 22 x 13 x 11 inches (expanded) | Weight: 4.5 pounds | Capacity: 35 liters (compressed), 45 liters (expanded) | Waterproof: Yes

Best Daypack

Travelon anti-theft classic backpack.

Comes in various colors

Not laptop-friendly

Most anti-theft backpacks are bulky and rugged or sleek and minimalist—yet still big enough to hold tech gear, which you don't always need. It can be hard to find an anti-theft backpack purse sized for light-traveling, tech-free days. Enter the Travelon Classic Backpack, which has RFID-blocking card and passport slots, should you happen to be traveling, and a hidden pocket under the flap (great for pricey sunglasses or your smartphone). For extra security, the zipper pull of the main flap locks into the tab of the front pocket, making it extra hard for thieves to get into. This budget-friendly travel backpack also works well as a daypack.

Our testers found this pack deceptively roomy and very lightweight. "This bag could be a daypack or hold everything you need for a weekend trip," one tester said. They also liked the small flashlight inside the pack, which helps with internal lighting. Like other packs on this list, the slash test revealed it was easy to make an initial tear but much harder to get into the pack and remove anything.

"This no-fuss, anti-theft backpack is a good option for travelers who want to go out and explore with just the essentials," a tester summarized. "Despite not being able to fit a laptop larger than 13 inches, it's surprisingly roomy, with multiple pockets to organize your things and RFID-blocking slots."

Dimensions: 6 x 12 x 16 inches | Weight: 14.2 ounces | Capacity: Not listed | Waterproof: Not listed

Best for Students

Oscaurt anti-theft 15.6" travel laptop backpack.

Minimalist aesthetic

Well-designed interior

Not as tough as we'd like

Itchy material

The Oscaurt Anti-Theft Laptop Backpack is a solid option for students or anyone looking to securely transport electronics and other work or study-related items. It's loaded with internal pockets for organization, features a USB charging port, and has some waterproofing capabilities.

Our testers liked the discrete "hidden" zipper on the front, and they liked how the bag opened and its organizational capabilities. However, they were less impressed with the durability of the anti-slash material. "The anti-slash material is a weak point; we were able to cut straight through to the bottom," one tester said. "If you want something super durable, I wouldn't recommend this backpack—it was a bit concerning how easily we could cut through it."

Said another: "If theft resistance is a priority, there are better options out there. However, based on look and price, I think this is a decent option for a sleeker backpack."

Dimensions: 11 x 15 x 17 inches | Weight: 2.3 pounds | Capacity: Not listed | Waterproof: Yes

Best Hard Shell

Matein hard shell anti-theft 15.6" backpack.

Smart features

Some parts proved delicate

The Matein Hard Shell Laptop Backpack provides an interesting hard shell alternative for those who prefer that aesthetic. It's made of scratch- and water-resistant materials and features a three-digit lock and USB charging port. Our testers liked the 270-degree clamshell opening, which was essential for easy packing and unpacking considering the front was a bit stiff.

"The bag can open flat, which is nice for packing, but because the front is so stiff, it's a bit difficult to access items without opening the bag all the way," a tester reported. However, we had to mark the durability of this pack down as the lock either broke on its way to our lab, broke during a fall while photography was happening, or was broken before it left the manufacturer. Either way, not good.

Dimensions: 10 x 6.5 x 17 inches (compressed), 10 x 8 x 17.5 inches (expanded) | Weight: 1.5 pounds | Capacity: 18 liters (compressed), 22 liters (expanded) | Waterproof: Water resistant

Best Vegan Option

Sherpani dispatch 13" convertible backpack.

Eco-friendly

Can wear three ways

Suited to daily use

Can be difficult to open zipper

Won’t hold larger laptops

This backpack can easily transform into a crossbody or a tote with a simple change of the straps—and it'll keep your stuff secure no matter how you carry it. Made from 100 percent vegan and recycled materials, it features an RFID-protective lining, an external zippered security pocket, and two interior slip pockets to hold the essentials. While it might look relatively small, it's sized to fit 13-inch laptops, so you can bring your computer on the go. And although it's not big enough to hold more than a single change of clothes, it makes a great everyday carry.

"Even though it's on the smaller end of the bags we tested, it can fit quite a few things, including a 13-inch laptop," one tester reported. "In the bag's interior, there are two small pockets plus a drink pocket (you could use it to store your sunglasses)."

Said another: "Don't let its small size fool you: The Sherpani Dispatch can fit all your essentials—including a 13-inch laptop, sunglasses, passport, and water bottle —with room to spare. Lightweight and durable, it can be worn as a crossbody bag or travel backpack, perfect for carrying from the airport to the city streets."

While our testers liked the vegan and recycled construction, they also reported that the handles were uncomfortable.

Dimensions: 9 x 13 x 5.5 inches | Weight: 1.65 pounds | Capacity: 13 liters | Waterproof: Yes

Arden Cove Carmel Convertible Backpack and Crossbody

Highly protective

Looks great

Not big enough for a laptop

This convertible backpack gets you everywhere you need to go with a few different configurations for carrying—and keeps your gear and devices secure. Get the version with locking hardware for extra security, though any model comes with full-body anti-slash lining, cut-resistant straps, and a fully waterproof vegan leather exterior. We also like the studs that keep the bottom of the bag lifted off the ground and the three interior pockets (there's also a built-in RFID-protected wallet with eight card slots and a spot for notes). While it's not big enough to be a carry-on, there's the option to expand it by 1.5 inches if you find a souvenir or two .

While this bag is difficult to tear into and open fully, it is almost effortless to rip and tear the outer layer. Our testers also reported it irritating sensitive skin. "While stylish, the Arden Cove Carmel Convertible Backpack and Crossbody is uncomfortable to carry and easily fell off my shoulders," one tester reported. "I can picture myself constantly having to adjust the straps, which, in my opinion, isn't worth the aesthetic." These things are subjective; however, if you opt for this backpack, consider trying before you buy or choose an online retailer with a good return policy in case you end up feeling the same way.

Dimensions: 7 x 10.5 x 3 inches (compressed), 8 x 10.5 x 4.5 inches (expanded) | Weight: 1.7 pounds | Capacity: Not listed | Waterproof: Yes

Secure, eco-friendly, and comfortable to carry, the Pacsafe Venturesafe EXP45 is the ideal backpack for providing peace of mind and getting you and your essentials to your destination. We also like the Ambor Travel Laptop Backpack for its affordable price and solid organization.

Our editors and writers spent hours researching and reading customer reviews of the best anti-theft backpacks. We also tapped into our own experience and knowledge of backpack brands and specific anti-theft packs we've used in the past. We narrowed the list to the above 10 options based on price and diversity of use. We wanted to offer the best products across a wide price range. And we also wanted to consider all sorts of travelers, commuters, students, and anyone else regularly wearing and using a backpack.

TripSavvy editors tested anti-theft backpacks in our Brooklyn testing lab. We tested for features, comfort, and anti-theft capability. For features, we packed and unpacked each backpack with everyday items including laptops, books, magazines, headphones, passports, wallets, money, water bottles, etc. We then judged features based on how they helped—or didn't help—the packing and organization process.

For comfort, we put the full backpacks on and carried them around our lab until they became uncomfortable or we got tired. We also assessed comfort-boosting features including chest and waist straps. For anti-theft testing, we took a box cutter and made an initial quick swipe to see how well the pack withstood this kind of attack. Then we spent more time thoroughly trying to cut into each bag. We also considered hidden compartments and locking zippers and how well they worked.

We did not test for RFID-blocking material as it's been well-documented that this feature is somewhat redundant, but many of the products on this list advertise this capability.

What to Look For in an Anti-Theft Backpack

While the size of the bag you carry will ultimately depend on your needs, an excellent guideline for travelers to stick to is that it should fit within the carry-on size restrictions of most major U.S. or international airlines (depending on where you’re going). That said, getting a bag that fits your purpose is vital: If you want to keep your laptop secure at the gym, you will not require the same capacity you might if you're planning to pack all your belongings for a week-long trip.

We’re a fan of waterproof (or at least water-resistant) materials when it comes to backpacks—after all, you’re going to so much trouble to protect your gear with these anti-theft measures, so why compromise when it comes to keeping them out of the rain? These days, many backpacks are made from durable nylon or vegan leather that keeps the rain away from your laptops and devices (not to mention the clothes you’re packing, too). Look for recycled materials for an extra eco-bonus—they’re just as durable these days as freshly produced ones.

The devil (or maybe angel) is in the details when it comes to anti-theft features. Look for secure pockets, zippers with locking components, and cut-resistant straps or frames. We also like clever placement for pockets—say, one for your passport or laptop located on the back of the bag rather than the front. Some bags go the extra mile and have cables to secure your bag to a fixed point, too, so you can hook it up and not have to worry about someone grabbing your bag at a restaurant and running off.

How much you travel and use the bag will determine your spending on this—if you live in a city known for petty crime, this might be your everyday carry and, therefore, an investment in protecting yourself and your gear. If you want a bag for travel but don’t travel often, some great budget options (even under $40) make for a tremendous one-off purchase that comes with peace of mind.

Follow the manufacturer’s directions on how to clean your anti-theft backpack—each model is made of different fabrics and might have delicate coatings, such as a durable water repellent (DWR). If you need to wash your bag and there are no specific instructions, it’s generally OK to take a damp, soft cloth with mild detergent and spot-clean wherever there’s dirt or dust.

Each anti-theft backpack has its own unique design, but in broad terms, they have special features meant to deter thieves from stealing your belongings. Think of zippers with integrated locks that make opening the bag harder for a would-be nabber—and give you more time to see or feel them trying to get in. Other standard security features on anti-theft backpacks include hidden passport pockets, slash-proof materials, and zippers that open on the side closest to your body rather than on the front.

Tips for Keeping Bags Safe While Travelling

  • Always carry your bag across your body, never dangling from one shoulder.
  • It might sound obvious, but keep all zippers closed. We see so many tourists walking around with bags hanging wide open.
  • Carry your bag on the side away from the road to avoid scooter snatchers.
  • Keep bag straps as short as comfortable and keep snug against your body and preferably to the front.
  • In any crowded situation, always keep a hand on your bag and again, preferably to the front.
  • Don’t keep all your valuables all in one bag. Use the hotel safe or another bag for additional cards or spare cash.
  • When travelling on buses or trains, keep your bags next to you or within sight. If planning on sleeping, lock all bags and secure to a fixed structure with a lockable cable or the bags own reinforced straps.

Luggage Padlocks, Anti Theft Cable Locks and Locking Luggage Straps

Tips for choosing travel locks, luggage cables and straps..

  • When choosing travel padlocks always look for TSA Approved Locks. This means locks do not have to be cut open to facilitate random airport screenings.
  • Opt for padlocks with combination locks as opposed to locks with keys. You won’t have to worry about lost keys and can reset combinations at any time.
  • Locks with a long shackle or better, a long cable shackle make the best luggage locks. This enables more flexible locking arrangements. Especially for bags that have outer pockets with only one zip head. A long or flexible cable shackle can give you the length to link to another zip or lock on the bag ensuring all pockets are secure.
  • Bright coloured lockable luggage straps are not only perfect for the additional security of the contents of your bag but also make your bag easily identifiable. It not only ensures you collect the correct bag, but it also acts as an additional deterrent for bag thieves at the baggage carousel.
  • A lockable luggage cable is great for trains, buses or even hotel rooms to secure your bags to a fixed structure. We used ours a lot while road tripping through Southern Africa to lock our bags in the back of the car.
  • A selection of small plastic cable or zip ties is a handy item for times where you don’t have enough locks or can’t make an outer pocket zip reach another lock. While not completely secure, it is a deterrent. While not the perfect solution, larger zip ties can also be a good back up for securing luggage to a fixed structure on buses, trains or hotel rooms if you are short of a luggage cable.

VPN for Travel. Protection From Online Theft

By now most people understand the merits of having a VPN (virtual private network), especially when you travel. Using the internet when you travel, even on your own devices can pose security risks. Logging on to public networks with your own devices in hotels, cafe’s and airports or using shared computers can open you up to the online theft of your personal information including financial details, usernames and passwords, even your browser cookies.

A VPN or Smart DNS offers you a virtual safe place in cyberspace to keep your sensitive online information secure from online hackers. A good efficient Smart DNS also gives you the bonus of being able to stream content from your favourite online providers such as Netflix or Amazon Channels from anywhere in the world by virtually putting your computer in the country you want to stream from.

We have tried many VPN and Smart DNS services over the years but have found Unlocator to be the best so far.

Keep Your Camera Safe

Tips for keeping your camera safe while you are travelling..

A good anti-theft backpack or bag will protect your camera while you’re not using it, but what about when you have it out? A little forethought and some simple changes to your camera’s accessories can give you peace of mind when using your camera while travelling.

  • It goes without saying; having travel insurance will be your best protection while travelling, which means you need to have a document of your equipment before you go.
  • Record serial numbers on equipment or use an online application such as the free MYGearVault App  to record all your equipment’s information. This will be handy if you ever have to complete a police report for insurance purposes or identify gear as your if found by police.
  • If you have invested in any expensive equipment, it doesn’t pay to advertise. While most new cameras, especially costly DSLR’s come with a free neck strap, conveniently emblazoned with the brand of your camera, this can be an invitation for would-be thieves.
  • Replace any branded camera straps with a plain anti-theft strap. You will find it will be more comfortable and safer in the long run.
  • The same goes for camera bags. While it might be tempting to purchase a new branded camera bag, a casual or non-descript anti-theft bag or backpack will be less obvious and much safer. You will also find a multi-use bag more practical for travel.
  • Always keep your camera gear either securely in your bag or on your body with a neck or wrist strap. Never leave a camera sitting on a table while you dine for example.

Additional Advice on Safe Travel

Remember, while anti-theft travel gear is a great precaution, it does not guarantee you won’t become a victim of theft while you travel but it will certainly improve your chances. It is more common for people to have individual items stolen from inside bags or from their person than having a thief take off with an entire bag. This is where anti-theft travel gear makes it harder for thieves to succeed.

Being cautious with your personal belongings and staying vigilant while you travel is always the best way to avoid becoming a crime target.

Safety is always a big concern for many travelers, no matter where your destination or how long your journey. In this post, I’ll share the best money belt for traveling along with additional anti-theft accessories for women that would prefer not to have a bulge under their top.

Even a seasoned traveler can easily become a victim by getting too comfortable. I knew a traveler who had their credit cards stolen in Thailand and the thieves got away with $5,000 in purchases!

If you don’t have the time to read the entire article, this is the most popular womens money belt !

Best Money Belts and Anti-theft Travel Accessories

Table of contents.

Fortunately, I’ve only been a victim of theft once in almost a decade of full time travel – a fellow backpacker stole $100 cash from my unlocked bag in a hostel. To be honest, both of these situations were completely preventable . All we had to do was lock our backpacks.

The majority of these occurrences are due to convenience and by taking a few precautions you can avoid becoming a victim of opportunistic theft. Travel insurance can sometimes help cover costs in case you are a victim, but it’s best to be cautious wherever possible.

Don’t worry – below you’ll find a roundup of the best money belts for travel so you can theft-proof your gear!

The Best Travel Money Belt: Alpha Keeper

What’s a Money Belt?

It’s an item you wear under your clothing where you can store your valuables to prevent theft. The above image shows the most traditional style, but you can find a variety of anti-theft product options below.

Whatever you do, DO NOT WEAR THE MONEY BELT OUTSIDE OF YOUR CLOTHING.

I can’t believe how many travelers I see wearing it on the outside, advertising to thieves exactly where to find their cash. Please don’t make that mistake. It’s meant to be worn as a hidden money pouch under your clothing.

Venture 4th RFID Money Belt for Travel

Money Belt Reviews

While there are a variety of brands offering security accessories, our readers favor the beige color by Alpha Keeper and the black color by Venture 4th . They’re both made with RFID protection and water-resistant ripstop nylon.

While the one by Alpha Keeper features some colorful prints, many prefer the Venture 4th because it offers a variety of neutral colors to blend in seamlessly underneath clothing instead of brights that can show through your tops.

Pack Gear Hidden Money Belt with RFID Block

The option above by Pack Gear is unique in that it includes theft insurance and lifetime recovery service for lost items. While durable and with plenty of space for passports and credit cards, it’s thin and low profile so it’s a bit less bulky than other styles. Plus, with RFID protection, you won’t have to worry as much about identity theft!

Compass Rose RFID Secret Bra Wallet

Secret Pockets

Personally, I prefer to use a hidden bra wallet instead of a money belt. This anti-theft product allows me to hide my cash and cards conveniently in my bra. This feels secure and comfortable and hasn’t failed me once!

I’ve used different types of bra stashes but couldn’t find something to meet my needs. Either the fabric was made of lace and scratched my skin or the strap didn’t fit across my wide bra band.

As a solution, I created my own version, the Compass Rose Secret Bra Wallet . The fabric is the same as a bra so it’s soft and comfortable to wear even in the heat and humidity of Rome in the summer.

Because women come in a variety of shapes and sizes, my secret bra stash is also designed with an extra long strap to fit size A – DD+ cup sizes and bra bandwidths up to 4.5”. PLUS, it’s the only bra wallet with built-in RFID protection .

I wear my trusty bra money pouch under my arm instead of in front of my bra. I also tuck it in underneath my bra after fastening it to the bra band for extra security.

Find out how getting left behind on an organized tour to Europe is actually the reason why my Secret Bra Wallet became one of my all-time travel essentials! Learn why here.

Eagle Creek Undercover Hidden Pocket

While you can fasten the Compass Rose Secret Bra Wallet to your belt loop and tuck it into your pants, the Eagle Creek Undercover Hidden Pocket can fit a passport if you’d like to hide that on your body.

Many people find this to be a comfortable option, but the caveat is that you have to wear a belt in order to use it.

Jasgoods Travel Security Money Belt

Featuring a zippered hidden pocket, the Jasgoods security belt is a great alternative to your regular one to keep your money and other valuables safe while on the road. Simply fold your bills and passport copies in half and slide them in the pocket with any other of your credit cards or ID’s.

Lewis N Clark Clip Travel Money Pouch

Similar to a bra stash, this secret wallet by Lewis N Clark offers an option you can clip to your waist belt. It also offers RFID protection. While their picture shows in on the outside of trousers, it seems to be better protected on the interior of your clothing.

Lewis N. Clark Deluxe Neck Stash

Another popular Lewis N Clark anti-theft product is their deluxe neck wallet . It can hold up to four passports, which is a plus if you’re traveling with your family. It also has durable ripstop fabric and a long strap so you can also wear it across your body.

Forge TSA Lock

Luggage That Locks

The best protection in your accommodation and during transportation rides can be as easy as locking your bag.

Check out my favorite travel backpack, the Osprey Farpoint 55 and this reader’s fave anti-theft suitcase by Samsonite . If I hadn’t left my backpack locked in a hostel in Borneo, my valuables would have been gone when I returned from a scuba diving trip.

I now use the 21.5″ Osprey Ozone wheeled suitcase and alternate it with the Delsey Helium  for different trips. They’re both terrific bags and have built-in lockable zippers.

Tank Top with Secret Pockets

Clothing with Hidden Pockets

If you don’t like a money belt, stashing your passport and money in your underwear may be a better option. While traveling in El Salvador, I found a boy short style underwear with large pockets on either side of the leg.

While it was a bit awkward to wear my passport over my upper leg, I only used it during transportation journeys in Central America when the probability of getting my daypack stolen seemed a bit higher.

For something similar, a popular style is travel clothing with secret pockets by Clever Travel Companion. It features zippered tanks and underwear with hidden pockets.

If you’re looking for clothing designed to protect your belongings, our readers share their recommendations for concealed pocket clothing !

Infinity Scarf with Zipper Pocket

Customize your anti-theft approach based on your destination. In places like Europe and Spain, where pickpockets are common, avoid clothing and bags with open pockets, giving wandering hands easy access to your things.

Coats and pants with zippers are a must!

It’s possible to find clothing accessories with zippered pockets to stash a little cash. I found the above infinity scarf online. It’s affordable and available in wide variety of prints and colors.

While you wouldn’t want to carry many things on your next the entire day, this may work well to store some larger bills and an emergency credit card on trips with cool to mild weather.

Here are our readers top recommendations for scarves with pockets to help keep your valuables safe!

Travelon Anti-Theft Signature Quilted Slim Pouch

Anti-theft Travel Shoulder Bags

Some travelers may want to take extra precaution by using anti-theft travel shoulder bags. These specialized travel purses have safety features like lockable zippers, slash-proof materials, and sturdy straps to prevent thieves from breaking in.

Pacsafe and Travelon are the two major brands that offer these theftproof bags but our readers rave the most about Travelon. They offer a variety of styles including travel purses that don’t necessarily look like “anti-theft purses” like their Slim Crossbody shown above. It’s part of their Signature Collection, which offers some of the best-looking styles!

Travelon Anti-Theft Cross-Body Bag, Two Pocket

If you need more space, the best selling Travelon travel purse is the anti-theft cross body with two pockets. It has a slim design featuring slash-proof fabric, an adjustable, cut-proof shoulder strap, and zippers with a latch for extra security. It also comes with RFID blocking card slots.

It retails for as low as $30 and is available in over twenty colors. Our readers favor the bag in a classic Black but two other popular options are the Midnight and Stone colors. It’s a clear winner!

What’s the Best Money Belt for Travel?

There are many variations to anti-theft accessories, as you can see in the above article. From neck pouches to hidden pockets, there’s something to meet everyone’s needs.

In fact, the best option is to use a combination of items. That’s what I do.

For example, you can use a bra stash to store your credit cards and cash for everyday use, then use a neck pouch or pocket underwear to store your passport on transit days, and the rest of the time, use a lockable suitcase (safe or locker) to ensure your belongings are secure inside your accommodation.

Here is a quick review of the best money belts and anti-theft travel accessories:

How Do You Use Anti-Theft Accessories?

It’s important to note that anti-theft products DO NOT REPLACE YOUR NEED TO USE A WALLET.

Please keep enough money for the day in your wallet and use an anti-theft product such as a money belt or bra stash to store EXTRA cash and cards only .

I keep the bulk of my money in my bra stash but I keep what I need for the day in my pocket, purse, or wallet.  This way, I don’t have to dig into my bra or money belt awkwardly or uncomfortably every single time I need to access money.

Please DO NOT dig under your clothing every time you make a purchase. That defeats the purpose of these products.

I see this happen a lot. Travelers will get their money belt out and dig through everything so they can find what they need. This isn’t very safe as now everyone knows how much money you have and where you store it.

It’s important to be discreet, hide it, and step aside somewhere quiet or secure if you do need to get into your anti-theft product.

Please read my top ten tried and tested anti-theft travel tips for more information on how to properly use these items!

Watch the video above for the do’s and don’ts on avoiding theft while traveling.

These anti-theft accessories listed in this article are products designed to help you avoid theft while traveling. (These can also be used at home, too.)

The majority of the items are meant to be worn under your clothing to securely store cash, cards, passports, and potentially other small valuables.

Please note: you should not carry around your passport while sightseeing. Read this to learn how to keep your passport safe !

Additional Travel Safety Tips

  • Don’t forget travel insurance ! Keep all your receipts because they’ll be necessary for insurance claims, along with a police report.
  • Avoid sightseeing with your passport and all your money in your daypack or travel purse.
  • Don’t go to big festivals and events with your passport and large amounts of money.
  • Avoid leaving your passport and money unlocked in your hotel, hostel, or guesthouse.
  • Use lockers provided by your accommodation (don’t forget one of the top 10 essentials on your backpacking checklist: travel locks).
  • Try to only keep all your valuables on you when in transit and on transportation journeys–this is a good time to use the above gear.
  • Make photocopies of your passport and offer it when an agency requires you to leave your passport as collateral. It may not always work, but it’s worth a try.
  • Distribute the wealth and spread your valuables out in different places so if something does get taken, they don’t get everything.
  • Always always always lock your backpack or suitcase, no matter how comfortable you feel in your accommodation.

PLEASE NOTE

As mentioned above, these items should be used as precautions. They won’t guarantee you won’t have things stolen, but they definitely improve your chances of keeping your valuables safe.

It is more likely that your cards will be stolen from inside your luggage rather than someone making off with your entire suitcase or backpack, but things do happen.

In cases where thieves steal entire bags, it usually happens on overnight buses–from underneath the bus or even from right under your seat while you sleep. It’s a sad part of travel, but it happens.

Anti-theft travel accessories are a low price to pay versus having your cash and credit cards stolen.

Watch my video on  TPSY TV for a few more anti-theft products.

Items featured in video (in order as shown)

  • Anti-theft Crossbody Purse
Travel insurance can sometimes help cover costs in case you are a victim, but it’s best to be cautious about your belongings, too.

Lastly, it’s good to be well-informed and cautious, but please don’t feel paranoid.  The world is a much kinder and safer place than we give it credit for but it’s easy to feel a bit stressed out when you’re a first time traveler.

While there are reports of thefts from travelers, there is a much higher number of people who’ve never experienced anything at all so don’t let it deter you from enjoying your travels.

Amazon says the Compass Rose Bra Wallet is no longer available.

Alex

Hi Ramona, sadly at the moment it is. We’re working on bringing it back but since COVID we’re having to start again from scratch as we’re looking for the same high quality. Hope this makes sense

These are brilliant, thanks so much! I am going to Europe for the first time in over 20 years and trying to be as prepared as possible. Your site has been SO helpful to know what to expect, what to buy, and how to (hopefully) pack light! Pickpockets are a concern for me so I can’t wait to try out some of these solutions.

Karen Pearsall

This blog post was so helpful when preparing for my first trip to Europe this year. Having the Travelon purse made me feel so much safter!

LACY@SUNFLOWERSPA.NET

CAN YOU TELL ME WHERE TO PURCHASE THIS PURSE? THE BLACK PURSE PICTURED IAT THE TOP OF THE ARTICLE?

Hi there, I am afraid that the image at the top of the article is a stock image so we are not sure of the brand. ?

janet

Another travel bra option would be the sporty Brave Betty. Good for overnight travel and when you don’t need immediate access to the contents as the storage area is inside the back of the bra.

Hi Janet, thank you for sharing your recommendation for Brave Betty with us!! Sounds fantastic for keeping your valuables safe! 🙂

Mandy

Do you have recommendation for passport storage while swimming. I’m going on a cruise. I want to swim While on shore but will need my passport to get back on the ship.

Hi Mandy, have a look at this post for some ideas for keeping your passport safe: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-keep-your-passport-safe-while-traveling/ I have also gone ahead and scheduled your question on TFG’s facebook page. Our readers are the best at answering question like yours so keep an eye out for their replies from next Wednesday: https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl/ hope this helps! Have an awesome time on your cruise! 🙂

Jean

Thanks for the post! I know this wasn’t the point of the article, but do you know what brand the bag/backpack is in the photo? I’ve been looking for something like that! (At the top of the post, sitting on the bench about to be stolen.)

Hi Jen, I am really sorry but the image is just a stock photo so I am not sure of the brand. The Baggallini Kindred tote featured in this post is similar: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/travel-purses-which …/ Also there is the Tumi Crossbody Messenger bag, which is also quite similar: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/travel-purse/ Sorry I could not be of more help 🙁

Donna

One of the best items I’ve bought is a ScotteVest, I can travel with everything I might need for the day and then some without looking bulky or having a bag to manage. The best part it entering museums or other venues with bag checks….I can just skip that and walk straight in. All my valuables are safely stowed in hidden pockets, I love it!

Hi Donna, thank you so much for sharing your suggestion with us! 🙂

Theatta Dobbs

When do you wear the money belt/bra stash? put it on before airport? When going through security, is the belt/bra stash a problem? Thank you for clearing this situation up.

alex

Hi Theatta, I’ve just added a video that explains this all: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-keep-your-passport-safe-while-traveling/ The explanation begins at the -17:20 minute mark.

Gina Soceanu

Ordered the travel bra however do you have recommendations for where to keep a smartphone when out and about. That obviously will not fit in the bra.

I carry it in my purse or jacket pocket.

Lighthouse Lou

I bought a waterproof case that had a clip on it. Then you can easily clip it to your belt or purse while having it in your pocket or bag. It made it easy to find to for a quick pic on the go. My friend actually had hers stolen the second day of our trip & now uses a similar case in her daily life.

Ashley

Great article! My husband has a great travel sling backpack from Oakley that has zipper lock capabilities. It’s a great option for men.

Great suggestion Ashley, thanks!

Mike

where did you get it the bag for your husband?

Robert

Some great safety items for travel. I always use luggage locks and when traveling to heavily populated destinations, always wear my leather Stashbelt! 🙂

Thanks Robert!

Jenny

I was reading your site and started looking online, what about this purse? Travelon Anti-theft Heritage Crossbody Bag https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CG1J7XG/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I17IZF2509XP6D&colid=2012FMWFIFCN9

It’s super cute – I have it!

Jo Ellen Craghead

I have the purse you listed & found it extremely hard to get items in & out. The zipper opens to far up on the purse & prevents the purse from fully opening. I tried it at home last yr before going on B2B cruises in Europe & thought it would work. But I ended up using a 31 crossbody that I threw in the suitcase at the last minute. Loved it, hated the Anti-theft Travelon Purse. I was past the return period when I arrived back home so I still have it but don’t use it….wish I could give it to another traveler as I doubt I’ll ever use it.

Hi Jo, I am sorry you had that experience with the Travelon purse 🙁 but pleased you found an alternative purse which you were happy with! Let me look in to this for you!

Alex

I was wondering whether you have seen the 65fifty5 undies with the detachable pockets that are water resistant. My daughter used them for a trip to India recently and was really impressed http://www.65fifty5.com

they look good, thanks!

Kerri Morris

What about the Kavu bags? They are so popular with the young people. My 19 year old is studying abroad in Europe this summer and wants to take her Kavu which is a crossbody bag and she wears it in front .

Thanks for the suggestion Kerri! Will look into this brand

Monica

Hi Alex, great article. I’ve been using a fabric belt called Möbius Belt. What’s great about it is that I can wear and use it for all sorts of different activities, so I certainly get my moneys worth! With one belt, I can use it when I’m out exercising, when I go to a concert or event and even when I’m traveling. My husband has also been a victim of theft in Rome. It happened when we first went out in the morning so the theft of our credit cards and money ruined the rest of the day as we had to go back and be on the phone for a long time dealing with the credit card companies. And just feeling mad and frustrated on how fast and easy it was for the thief to take my husbands wallet from this pant pocket. It would have been awesome to have had Möbius Belt at that time since it can be worn comfortably and discreetly under clothing and be like a storage place for a passport (or photocopy of a passport), extra cash, backup credit cards, etc. Here is the website for Möbius Belt in case you are interested in checking it out. http://www.mobiusbelt.com

sonia kanner

Hi Alex, I have created a product called the Global hipS-sister specifically for travel. 7 inch flattering waist bands with extra large pockets to hold valuables. Our customers LOVE wearing them while traveling. They are meant to be worn under a shirt so it looks like a layering piece. I would love to send you one so that you could try it out for yourself. If interested, contact me at [email protected]

Andi K.

This is really helpful! But just a question color question, if you put your money in the bra stash, how do you get it out when you need it? Or do you keep some of it in your purse?

Hi Andi, yes you always keep the amount of money you will need for the day in your purse and store the excess cash and cards in your bra stash or money belt. Great question!

Shemika

Hi, I’m traveling to the Dominican Republic soon. Can I get through airport security with a hidden thigh money belt on and with money in my bra?

Hi Shemika! The money in your bra and thigh should be no problem with the metal detector but if security searches you they may wonder what it is. I’m sure it wouldn’t be an issue if it’s not an overly high sum. Hope you have a great trip!

Kamala J

Yes you can also long as visible

Michelle

I carry small essentials in a BANDI belt. Soft and stretchy, it fits snug on waist or hips and can hold phone, passport, cash/cards/ID as well as other small items such as keys, lip gloss, mints, coins.

Sleek no-bounce alternative to a bulky fanny pack. BANDI belts come in dozens of fun colorful prints and solid fabrics. I love it!

Great tip, I’ll check them out!

Robyn

Another issue with travel designed gear such as purses is they look like they hide valuables. The local hoodlums look for them, usually. Have a piece of junk or run of the mill bag and the bag won’t attract undue attention.

Being a redhead traveling where reds don’t typically originate (red occurs in every genetic group, but it’s incredibly rare outside Caucasian genomes), I cannot help but attract attention, even with it up or covered. Pale skin, red eyebrows. I’m an outsider, full stop. I try for gear to help me look unlikely to have nice things. And I don’t travel with a lot of nice things, to lessen the hit of any loss, mine or otherwise.

Patricia

I just bought an RFID money belt. It looks the same as any other belt but with the added security to protect your personal data, like credit cards for example. It stops people from being able to swipe your card without your knowledge and take money or worse your identity.

I thought this was really cool and i was not aware how easy it now is for people to steal from you when walking past!

Thanks for the tip!

C. Steph

RFID swiping is very, very common (at least in the states). My credit card number was stolen that way. Now I use RFID sleeves and wallets to block transmission, but the info is also swiped when handing over your card to pay at restaurants (which is what happened in my case). You can’t avoid it totally, but RFID blocking accessories are definitely a big help.

Molly

Use judgement and precaution with hostel lockers. My laptop was stolen from the lockers at the Yellow Hostel in Rome. Staying in dorms can be cheap, but not safe for your belongings. My current practice is to never stay in dorms and always pring for the private room.

Jessica

Have you reviewed the Bra Stash yet??I bought one off of Amazon for my trip to Spain and am curious to hear your opinion of it. Thanks for your blog. I’ve gotten lost in it for hours and keep pinning stuff to revisit later!!

Hi Jessica, I haven’t officially reviewed it but I do own it, use it all the time, and highly recommend it! Thanks for reading for hours yay 🙂

Jackie

I am travelling around Europe in a few months, the purse that I wanted to take doesn’t zip at the top its got a magnet closure, but it does have a ring on the inside attached to the purse. Do you think it would be safe to use zippered pouches and hook all the zippers and such to the ring inside my purse using carabiner clips? So if a thief did try and pull something out of my bag it wouldnt come loose? Or should I just look for another bag that has a zipper on it?

Hi Jackie, it’s always a good idea to have a zippered closure just to be sure. However, if you plan to take this bag using large zippered pouches should be helpful. Does it have a zippered pocket for your wallet and phone?

Kat

I have a Coach soft leather purse with a zipper and shoulder strap. Do you think this is sufficient for my upcoming Rome/Florence/Venice trip, or should I invest on an anti-theft bag like from Travelon? My hubby and I are travelling to Italy for the first time, so please advise.

Ultimately, it is up to you. No matter what type of bag you have all you can do is take precautions: https://travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-keep-your-passport-safe-while-traveling/ I personally carry my own purse and hold on to it tight at all times – crossbody preferred. Hope you have a great trip!

Amy

A zippered purse can be made more secure by adding tiny S carbiners to the end of the zippers. Available for less than $5.

Valerie C.

Love your site! Planning to return to Europe next summer LIGHTLY packed and I appreciate all your wonderful tips. Thank you!

I was wondering if you have used the Sholdit Scarf as a security precaution? Thinking about adding one to my packing list as I’ll need a cute infinity scarf for the trip.

Hi Valeria, that’s great to hear! You’ll have such a much better experience packing light I promise 🙂 I haven’t personally used the scarf myself as I only stash my cash in the bra stash or money pouch. It’s served me well for almost 6 years of travel!

Valerie C.

Thanks Alex!

no problem 🙂

L. Ockner

I have looked into the anti-theft shoulder bags….and they are beyond ugly. What a shame.

Unfortunately, it seems as if much of the travel gear is less than attractive…I prefer to travel with a regular soft leather bag and keep my cash in my bra stash 😉 It’s worked for me for 6 years!

I’ve Been Traveling Solo for 20 Years, and These Are the 15 Safety Devices That You Should Always Pack

Prices start at $9 for game-changing door alarms, RFID-blocking accessories, and more.

Unlike most graduates, who receive new travel tech or fancy luggage before embarking on their first solo trip as an adult, I was gifted with a copy of Gavin de Becker’s "The Gift of Fear" and a door alarm by my dad when I started traveling alone nearly 20 years ago. His military background and time spent traveling the world as an airline pilot gave him a unique perspective on staying safe while on the road, which is why our family always took travel security very seriously.

Like the book (and my father) taught me, being aware of your surroundings and trusting your instincts goes a long way in staying safe while traveling , but there are some great tools out there to help protect against some of the biggest threats while venturing far from home. For example, I’ve rigged hotel doors with hangers and ironing boards, but this pocket-sized tool is the far superior solution.

Anti-theft devices don’t just extend to door stoppers and window locks. Nowadays, you can use data blocking cables to save you from being the victim of identity theft or hacking while you’re simply trying to charge your devices. I shopped through Amazon's travel gear offerings to find the most essential personal security devices and anti-theft products around, each of which help minimize the risks of travel and help keep you safe wherever you're headed. And, the best news is that they're all relatively budget-friendly, with the lowest price tag starting at $9.

Btfdreem Hidden Camera and Bug Detector

Buy on Amazon

This walkie talkie-sized device can detect bugs, cameras, and tracking locators within minutes. It’s ideal for making sure hotel rooms, Vrbo rentals, and Airbnbs are free of any hidden cameras or eavesdropping devices. One reviewer said , “I work in the private security field, and this is my favorite bug detector; small, concealable, and accurate.” Clip the on-site coupon to save an extra $5 on the shopper-dubbed "super convenient" travel gadget.

Zero Grid Travel Security Belt

Storing your cash in this unassuming belt is a convenient choice for deterring pickpockets. It looks like an everyday belt, only it's equipped with a handy, secret pocket for your valuables. Even better, it’s TSA-approved and one Amazon customer said that it gave them peace of mind when traveling abroad. “I put two 50 dollar bills and two 100 Euro bills in when I flew to Berlin; [there was] plenty, plenty of room for more," they explained in their five-star review. "I went through TSA security without having to take my belt off; my plastic watch set the alarm off, the belt did not. The belt was comfortable, but it took some practice to unbuckle. It is secure.”

Winonly Travel Door Lock

This Amazon-famous portable lock is far superior to the old “wedge a chair against the hotel door” trick. Its effective design guarantees that no one can break — even with a key since this little tool locks the door in place via the door jam. Many reviewers praise this lock’s ability to “add an extra layer of safety” to hotels, door rooms, and vacation rentals. Note: It doesn’t work on every type of door, but it’s small enough to toss in a carry-on just in case it does happen to fit the door that you’re behind that night. Don't miss this chance to get one for as little as $12.

PortaPow 3rd Gen USB Data Blocker

Many people don’t realize that most USB cables that are used for charging can also transmit data, making it super easy for someone to hack into a phone and steal valuable information like stored credit cards and passwords. It’s called “juice jacking,” and it’s easy to avoid with these simple data-blocking attachments. This little device blocks a hacker’s ability to access your phone, but still lets you charge in public spaces. According to one traveler , "This is simple to use and gives me peace of mind when plugging into strange outlets. The red color makes it easy to spot and it’s not too big."

Eagle Creek Silk Undercover Bra Stash Travel Wallet

This secret bra wallet is discreet enough to not show under most clothing, making it the perfect place to store important credit cards, room keys, cash, and IDs. One Amazon reviewer said , “I bought this for our vacation in Thailand. I was terrified of being pickpocketed and I didn't want to deal with a money belt in the muggy heat. I was able to fit a couple hundred Baht and a copy of my passport. It held up great for our two-week trip and I plan to use it for our next one.”

Cluci Anti-Theft Backpack Purse

The only way to access the contents of this anti-theft backpack, which is on sale for $36, is from a hidden back zipper, making your belongings virtually inaccessible to pickpockets. What's more, this bag has nearly 12,000 five-star ratings on Amazon, and many reviewers love it for being a lightweight travel bag with enough room for the essentials. A shopper shared , "I was very impressed by the quality of this backpack and it has passed the test of traveling from place to place. I carried this backpack on an international trip. It can hold my iPad, a jacket, my wallet, a book and several small items I brought on the flight."

Emdmak Door Stop Alarm

Although this little wedge won’t fully stop someone from trying to break into your hotel or vacation rental, the shrill siren that blares once the sensor is tripped will likely deter them from sticking around. Professional travelers even swear by its effectiveness, with one reviewer writing , “I’m a flight attendant and I use these on my overnights for added security. I definitely recommend [them]. You can use them for your house, too." Another flight attendant chimed in to add, "[I'm] in hotels all the time. I use this and feel safer at night."

Pacsafe RFID-Blocking V100 Anti-Theft Bi-Fold Wallet

Designed for travel, this bi-fold wallet has become the go-to personal security tool for countless jet-setters with its compact design, RFID-blocking capabilities, and multiple card slots and pockets. One Amazon reviewer said , “I purchased this travel wallet for a trip abroad, but it has now replaced my everyday wallet. Its security and anti-theft features are excellent, and I love the way I can tether it within my purse, thus avoiding digging about for a wallet in the depths of a bag at the check stand.”

Naturally, a wallet this good is bound to sell out. If it's out of stock during your next Amazon shopping spree, check out the Travando Slim Wallet , which also offers RFID-blocking protection and is on sale for $30.

She’s Birdie Personal Safety Alarm

It’s not always practical or possible to travel with pepper spray, which is where this best-selling personal safety alarm keychain comes in handy. Its small key-chain design packs easily into any bag and passes through TSA security with ease. Its piercing alarm is activated with the simple press of a button, which also turns on flashing strobe lights.

In their review, an Amazon shopper explained that they bought the alarm for their daughter, who is an avid traveler: "[She] let me know this 'churpper,' as she calls it, really works. She was on her way out of the courthouse and an unhappy man was following her, yelling at her… She used this product and he was so taken by surprise he just turned and walked away." I'm also a fan of it and I personally carry it with me in my pocket in parking garages and whenever I’m out walking alone.

Zrfcxe Window Lock

Windows are one of the most high-risk entry points for burglars, and these easy-to-install locks change that fact. Not only do they install in seconds to prevent window break-ins, but they also help prevent window break- outs for anyone traveling with children. "I like to stay at vintage properties and unusual places when I travel," one traveler shared , noting that most of these accommodations don't have adequate locks on their windows. "These locks are great as you can install them on the track on the exterior of a sliding glass door and secure them with the allen wrench." Just make sure that you don't misplace the key.

Smuggling Duds Men’s Anti-Theft Boxer Brief Shorts

Not even the most intrusive thief would think to search where this garment hides your valuables. The hidden pocket in these anti-theft boxers can hold money, keys, or even a passport. The pocket isn't the only noteworthy feature: Amazon shoppers were happy to report that the boxers were breathable and comfortable to wear. One reviewer commented , "They're pretty useful. Stuff stays in place and is very discreet."

Lewis N. Clark RFID-Blocking Money Belt Travel Pouch

Securing this secret money pouch to your belt is easy with the attached brown or black belt loops. Many reviewers call it a “travel must-have,” as it comes with three separate compartments that can hold cash, coins, credit cards, IDs, and a passport. According to one traveler , who was pickpocketed in Paris, "This wallet saved our vacation."

Pocket Socks Fashion Dress Socks With Hidden Zipper

Pocket Socks founder Evan Papel was a victim himself of pickpocketing, which led him to invent this concealed security system for travel. Each pair comes with a TSA-friendly zippered pocket that can hold any number of travel necessities, from cash and car key fobs to IDs and Apple AirPods. In their review, a traveler wrote , "I like to keep things as secure as possible. These Pocket Socks provide one more step into safety when traveling."

Boxiki RFID-Blocking Travel Hidden Money Belt

Many purchasers consider this the “perfect travel wallet,” and that’s because this durable waist pouch can conceal and hold all of your valuable essentials in a way that goes virtually undetected by thieves. RFID-blocking technology protects the contents of this belt from hacking, while its slender design keeps it from being visible from pickpockets when worn under clothing. It earned praise from one shopper , who said, "I bought this and used it for my two-month travels in Asia and it was perfect. The buckle never came undone and the zippers were perfect as well."

Manyi RFID-Blocking Cards

Pop one of these RFID-blocking cards in your wallet or purse and you’ll be creating an impenetrable barrier for your personal information. Remote RFID devices can scan credit cards or passports to access your financial information, name, etc., but this simple card muddles the signal and prevents the info from ever getting transmitted. But its greatest skill is the peace of mind it brings travelers, particularly for this reviewer : "The added protection in my purse is reassuring, especially when I travel." Don't miss this chance to score this five-pack for $9.

Travel & Leisure / Kevin Liang

Ensuring your personal safety and well-being is just as important as making memories and enjoying la dolce vita while traveling (if not more so). Luckily, staying safe while abroad or on a trip across the country doesn’t take much to get right. Simply come prepared with a few travel-focused safety products to give you peace of mind while you’re on the move.

We’ve rounded up some of the best safety products available, including those which we personally use. We especially love the Birdie Personal Safety Alarm, Monsin Door Stop Alarm, and Raytix RFID Money Belt, which can all help you stay safe in any situation you might encounter while traveling.

Best Door Wedge

Monsin door stop alarm.

This door stop doesn’t just block unwanted visitors — it actually includes a built-in alarm that will sound if someone tries to tamper with your hotel room door.

This alarm is very sensitive and could go off if room service or housekeeping staff attempt to enter your room.

It can be hard to fall asleep in a strange hotel room — even if it’s a plush five-star property. Whether you’re traveling solo or have a travel buddy sharing your room, the Monsin Door Stop Alarm is a great option for giving you peace of mind while you’re sleeping. Just wedge it into the closed hotel room door and it’ll keep unwanted visitors out by acting as a powerful doorstop. This option also comes with a built-in alarm that will ring if anyone tries to tamper with or open your door.

Best Secondary Door Lock

Winonly travel door lock for hotel rooms.

This budget-friendly door-locking system adds another layer of security to your hotel room and is pretty simple to set up.

This option might not fit very well on doors that have weatherproofing or other large seams along the doorframe.

The Winonly Travel Door Lock for Hotel Rooms is a great safety alternative for travelers who don’t want an alarm triggered when hotel staff enter the room for cleaning or turn-down services. Use this portable door lock by attaching it to the hole on the door jam, then inserting the red handle into the lock-in-place. It’s quick and efficient to use and install, and can also be easily removed in the dark for emergencies that require quick evacuation.

Best Personal Alarm

Birdie personal safety alarm.

This personal safety alarm is small, subtle, and can easily be slipped into your pocket or handbag.

Some reviewers note that this alarm should be louder and more offensive, especially for those traveling in big cities.

You never know when a personal safety alarm will come in handy — even in your own hometown or city. This alarm will immediately draw attention to you if your personal safety is threatened, if you encounter a pickpocket, or find yourself in any other unsavory situation.

This small device looks more like a USB drive than a personal safety alarm, and it fits conveniently into your pocket or handbag so you can keep it on you at all times. The compact alarm system sounds when you remove the top pin. To turn it off, just slide the pin back into place.

Best Motion Detector

Crevant portable mini motion detector alarm.

This compact motion detector is ultra-lightweight and small, so it’s easy to slip into a suitcase or carry-on bag.

The instructions aren’t very clear which makes the initial setup a bit difficult.

This small but mighty portable miniature motion detector alarm is a great alternative (or add-on) to a door wedge or door alarm. The compact safety product is extremely quick to trigger the alarm if it senses movement in the direction it's pointed — making it a great option for larger hotel rooms or suites where you don’t have your eye on the entrance at all times. Make sure to keep the “Do Not Disturb” sign on your door so you don’t set off a false alarm when housekeeping or other hotel staff attempt to enter your room.

Best Retractable Cable Lock

Lewis n clark triple security lock.

This cable lock offers extra strong, triple-security material that ensures it can’t be cut through or tampered with.

The lock itself can sometimes be finicky and may take a few minutes to get open.

Travel safety products range beyond personal safety items — to ensure a safe trip, you’ll also need to think about keeping your belongings secure while en route, and when you’re out and about. That’s where the Lewis N Clark Triple Security Lock comes in. This extra-strength lock can prevent thieves from getting into your handbag or backpack — even your bike bag . It’s also TSA-approved, which means you can use it on your checked luggage without worrying about having it cut off or confiscated while in transit.

Best Luggage Tracker

Eufy smarttrack link.

  • Ease of Setup 5 /5
  • Accuracy 5 /5
  • Functionality 5 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5

This subtle and compact tracker can easily be thrown in your handbag, backpack, or suitcase.

It is only compatible with Apple devices.

Most frequent flyers will tell you to buy a luggage tracker immediately if you plan on checking your luggage or taking a large carry-on on the plane with you. Adding the Eufy SmartTrack Link to your suitcase will allow you to easily track your belongings at all times. So if you do end up losing your luggage while in transit, you can pinpoint where it is — which can actually help the airline crew to expedite the process of getting your luggage back to you. We found the Eufy SmartTrack Link to be easy to use with Apple's Find My app, so you don't waste time learning a new system or downloading additional apps.

Best Portable Safe

Pacsafe travelsafe portable safe.

This portable safe isn’t imposing or heavy like a traditional metal safe — but it’ll keep your valuables just as secure while on the move.

The slim shape and flat bottom make it difficult to fit items like laptops or cameras.

Keeping your gear secure while at the beach can be a challenge — especially for solo travelers who don’t have someone with them to watch their stuff while they take a dip in the water or grab a drink at the pool bar. That’s where the Pacsafe Travelsafe Gii 5 Liter Portable Safe comes in. This unique portable safe isn’t a traditional metal security box — instead it’s lightweight and easily portable for travel. Another key feature is that it can easily be locked to a tree or a pool chair, making it extremely difficult for potential thieves to make a stealthy getaway with your belongings.

Best Money Belt

Raytix rfid money belt.

  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Performance 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

This money belt fits beneath your clothing without looking bulky or obvious.

The small inside pocket is in the corner of the bag, so it's difficult to actually fit items inside.

If you’re more comfortable keeping your valuables hidden away in a discreet money belt than in a backpack or handbag, then you should absolutely consider the Raytix RFID Money Belt. When tested, we found it especially useful for carrying large amounts of cash or for storing passports on you for long periods of time.

This budget-friendly money belt is ultra-slim, discreet, and features RFID-blocking technology to ensure your cards stay safe from potential thieves. Plus, the two front pockets help keep you organized to access all items easily and quickly.

Best Anti-theft Backpack

Sherpani esprit at.

  • Capacity 3 /5

This backpack features a slash-resistant bottom, zippers that clasp together, and can be worn on your back or front.

The small front pocket is a bit too small for most smart phones.

This anti-theft crossbody backpack is a stylish yet functional option for any adventure. It can easily be worn on your front or back and the shoulder strap is secured with a clip, so you don't need to lift it over your head to put on or take off. It is made from recycled materials and features a slash-resistant bottom, plus other safety features like RFID protection, locking zippers, and a wire-loop chair lock.

This bag is also the perfect size for day trips and features plenty of pockets, including an exterior water bottle pocket and shoulder strap pocket to keep small essentials easily accessible. With seven fun colors and patterns to choose from, the Sherpani Espirit offers something for everyone trying to stay safe on the go.

Best Hidden Stash Spot

Lokistashed 3-pack velvet hair tie scrunchies.

This hidden stash spot doubles as a functional (and stylish) hair scrunchie.

The zipper isn’t easy to hide and is noticeable on the lighter colorways.

Looking for a spot to safely stash a handful of cash without having to bring along your wallet or handbag? LokiStashed 3-pack Velvet Hair Tie Scrunchies are among our personal favorite options when it comes to discreet storage on the go. These velvet scrunchies function the exact same way a regular scrunchie does — but you can easily store at least a few folded-up bills inside without drawing any attention. It’s great for traveling in busy cities, and is a convenient choice if you’re heading out the door at home and don’t want to be weighed down with a handbag.

Best Fake Wedding Band

Thunderfit women breathable air grooves silicone wedding ring.

This affordable and comfortable silicone wedding band will send the desired message without attracting thieves or appearing overly flashy.

These wedding bands run large so you might want to size down at least a full ring size in order to ensure a proper fit.

Depending on where in the world you’re traveling , you may experience unwanted attention — especially if you’re a solo female traveler. If you’re worried about finding yourself in a situation where you feel harassed or unsafe, then wearing a fake wedding band might be a smart idea.

The ThunderFit Women Breathable Air Grooves Silicone Wedding Ring is a great option for this purpose. It isn’t flashy like a diamond engagement ring, so it won’t attract attention from potential thieves, but it’ll still send the right message to those who might otherwise be difficult to shrug off. These rings are waterproof and breathable, so you won’t have to worry about developing an unsightly green line across your finger, either.

Best First Aid Kit

First aid only all-purpose essentials first aid kit.

  • Ease of Use 4 /5
  • Organization 3 /5
  • Quality 4 /5

This kit includes everything you need in a pinch.

At over nine inches long, it's not the most compact first aid kit out there.

This handy first aid kit comes with all the essentials from ibuprofen tablets to tweezers. Whether you're exploring a major city or hiking a new trail, this kit can help in the case of blisters, burns, headaches, cuts, and more. The 298-piece kit is organized with like-items together, so you can quickly access exactly what you need. Plus, it comes in a lightweight and waterproof carrying case so you can leave it in your vehicle or pack in a day bag to ensure that you're fully prepared for health issues on the go.

Best Passport Wallet

Melsbrinna waterproof rfid-blocking travel wallet.

Your passport fits snugly on one side of the wallet, so it's easy to slide out at customs.

There is no space to store coins.

We love a wallet that's large enough to safely store your passport and this Melsbrinna case is the perfect, safe-yet-stylish option that even includes RFID-blocking technology. Your passport sits on one side of this wallet and the other side features four slots for your credit cards, ID, transit cards, and more. There is also a pocket designed to hold your ticket or other important small documents and two pockets made to keep SIM cards safe. Throughout our travels, we loved that this passport wallet kept all of our items secure, but never felt cumbersome and, in fact, easily fits inside any purse or travel backpack.

Best Reflective Layer

Rei co-op active pursuits cycling jacket.

It's light, wind-resistant, and water-repellent, so it will keep you comfortable in any weather.

The hood may not fit over all bike helmets.

For a reflective layer that will guarantee you're seen whether hiking, walking, cycling, or running, this REI jacket in men's and women's sizes is the perfect choice. The neon yellow fabric features 360-degree reflective details to keep you visible even at night and is so light you can wear it year-round. If you're running or cycling in the heat, the underarm vents area breathable addition that also improves mobility. In winter months, this lightweight layer won't add too much weight to your standard set-up, but will keep you safe as the sun sets earlier.

Best Safety Bracelet

Flare smart safety bracelet.

Without touching your phone, the Flare Bracelet can alert your friends and/or emergency services of possible danger.

It is not yet compatible with Androids.

When traveling solo or to a new location, this bracelet helps keep you connected and safe. The discreet bracelet looks like an average stylish accessory, but uses Bluetooth technology to pair with an iOS app, so you can tap the bracelet in different ways depending on your needs. Hold the hidden button down to text your location to your friends, press the button once to get a pre-recorded phone call to offer you an excuse to leave a situation, or press and hold the button for three seconds to send your location to emergency services.

The bracelet works even when you're up to ten feet away from your phone and the battery lasts a full year, so you don't have to worry about charging the device. It can also be used internationally as long as you have Wi-fi or cell services in your location.

Best Drink Tester

Philmedi gcheck date rape drug test sticker.

It's designed so you can stick it on the back of your phone for discreet and handy use wherever you go.

Each sticker can only be used once.

While we hope you would never feel the need to test your drink, it's always important to be prepared, especially if you're traveling alone or notice someone hovering near your beverage. These discreet stickers test for GHB in less than one minute, so you can protect yourself quickly and effectively. They're conveniently designed to be attached to your phone, wallet, or other item you always carry with a micro-film on the outside to be removed if and when you want to test your drink. Then, you simply tap a bit of the beverage on the sticker and wait to see if it changes color.

Tips for Buying Travel Safety Products

Consider every step of your journey.

You’ll want to think about the potential risks you’ll be taking throughout your trip, from getting there to exploring your destination, and while staying at your hotel or Airbnb. Travel safety products range significantly from items focusing on solo female travelers’ personal safety to items that protect against theft. Think about where you’re going and what makes the most sense for the destination or type of travel you have in mind, and go from there.

Pick the best way and place to secure valuables

This is something to think about before embarking on your adventure — not just to avoid potential theft, but also to make sure you don’t accidentally misplace anything. You’ll want to know where your valuables are at all times, whether they be jewelry, cash and credit cards, or your passport. Keeping your belongings in a personal safe or money belt while traveling can help give you peace of mind while also keeping you organized.
