APPELLATION

Wine tours .

google-5-star-review-png-13.png

We used Paul at Appellation thru a recommendation  from the concierge at the Ojai Valley Inn. He called and planned our whole itinerary  based upon our conversation.... what an amazing and unforgettable day! We met and tasted with two different winemakers and toured their vineyards. He thought of every detail and provided us with a fantastic lunch too. 5 STARS doesn't  do justice!

What people say.

Appellation Wine Tours was the highlight of our trip to Santa Barbara. He was recommended  by the front desk at our hotel and the experience   couldn't  have been more memorable. He took care of everything! We did a private barrel tasting and met the winery owners. We tasted and bought some out of this world wines! I highly recommend  that you utilize Paul if you are wine tasting in Santa Barbara.

Dan B. Sedona, Az.

Incredible day out in the vineyards! Best Anniversary present ever! How  romantic...we told Paul that we loved Champagne so he arranged for multiple private tastings with the owners of different wineries who specialized in sparkling wines. He also curated a special picnic lunch with incredible cheeses. This was absolutely the BEST!

Sophia & Ken, Chicago, Ill.

Sommelier Paul Tilson

Unlike most wine tour companies that have a staff of guides, Appellation tours are led exclusively by the owner and certified Sommelier Paul Tilson.

Paul has over 20 years of experience in the wine industry, including as Wine Educator & Senior Wine & Cuisine Manager for Meadowood Napa Valley, Restaurant & Wine Director at the The Ojai Valley Inn and Food & Beverage Director at The Hotel Californian in Santa Barbara. His knowledge, experience, passion, and relationships are unparalleled in the Ojai and Santa Barbara region.

Paul introduces his guests not only to the amazing wines and beautiful wineries of the region but also to the dynamic and passionate individuals who produce them. Crowded tasting rooms are bypassed, for tastings in vineyards, production facilities or private estates. Public tasting rooms can be visited by request if guests are interested in specific larger wineries.

Paul will work with you to tailor the perfect adventure, whether you are experienced connoisseurs or new wine enthusiasts. Let Paul be your guide for an unforgettable viticultural experience when you visit our eclectic, world-class appellations.

Tour Information

Luxury 4x4 SUV for tours consisting of 2-6 guests and utilize a Sprinter Van for tours between 7-12 guests.  This includes lunch, tasting fees, and transportation.

Wine is available for guests to purchase at all the wineries.

All lunches are gourmet Pic Nic style, I utilize tablecloths, cloth napkins, dishware and flatware to create a beautiful setting for the picnic lunch. I have a Michelin background and ensure the lunch experience is upscale and memorable.

Any dietary restrictions can be accommodated, 48 hours advance notice is appreciated.

My typical tour consists of 2-4 wineries, all tours are private experiences except for the lunch venue, (but I will always have a pre-arranged lunch venue which will be either a table, section and area which will be reserved and exclusive to my guests only).

All tours are curated individually for my guests, I welcome correspondence and/or conversation to determine and satisfy any personal wine preferences and expectations of my guests. Preferred varietals and/or wine styles, level of interest in education, and how one prioritizes purchasing wine are just a few of the details I consider while designing a unique experience.

A typical itinerary will be a pick up at a local hotel in Santa Barbara or Ojai, between 9:30 - 11am and a return between 3-5pm (all guest preference and pre-arranged). Typical tours last 5-7 hours.

Beckmen Vineyards

Crafting wine that leaves an impression since 1994. The focus of Beckmen’s winemaking team is to draw out the distinct qualities expressed by each grape variety, and the unique character of their two vineyards, as they guide the grapes from vineyard to bottle.

Enjoy a 6-flight tasting on their outdoor covered deck, overlooking a pond and estate vineyard.

Dragonette (Tasting Room)

Dedicated to careful, patient, minimalist winemaking — Dragonette Cellars is a family-owned winery in the Central Coast of California making exceptional Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Syrah.

Epiphany Cellars (Tasting Room)

Crafting interesting wines of exquisite quality is the sole reason for the label’s existence. Epiphany’s lineup features a selection of Rhône-based wines sourced primarily from Rodney’s vineyard on the family’s Home Ranch.  Located in the heart of Los Olivos and has a gracious garden area that is ideal for a seated wine tasting experience.

Firestone Vineyard

Founded in 1972, Firestone was the first major estate winery established in the Santa Ynez Valley. The property’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean, a mere 26 miles to the west, creates a climate that is arid, sunny, and mild. The key to the winery’s success is the 400 acres of estate vineyards. Planted to a mix of Bordeaux, Rhone, and Burgundian varieties, these vines provide Firestone’s winemaking team with the fruit they need to create an incredible array of wines.

Foley Estate Vineyards

Founded by Vintner Bill Foley in the late 1990s, the winery today totals 500 vineyard acres planted primarily to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Four Brothers Wine Co. (Tasting Room)

Run by, as their name implies, four brothers, this boutique, family-owned business brings you the highest quality wines sourced from the most in-demand vineyards the Central Coast has to offer.

Gainey Winery

Now on their fourth generation of winemakers, family tradition is a staple of Gainey’s farming and winemaking. They employ sustainable practices and grow wine in two ranches in the Santa Ynez Valley and Sta. Rita Hills.

Kalyra Winery

Take an Australian-born winemaker, give him twenty years making wine in California and Australia… then add some of the best grapes from California; Australian style winemaking techniques and what do you get? An outstanding portfolio of wines from Santa Barbara County and California. (P.S. They have some amazing award-winning dessert wines!)

Koehler Winery

This family-operated winery is celebrated as one of the most popular stops on the renowned Foxen Canyon Wine Trail. Their 48-year-old estate vines have been nurtured by vineyard manager Felipe Hernandez since day one. Felipe is himself a bit of a legend in this storied region, starting out as a field worker and maturing into one of the most skilled and knowledgeable vineyard managers on the Central Coast.

Just steps from the tasting room are a gathering of rustic picnic benches, shaded by an awning of pepper trees. Guests may also relax and picnic at the harvest tables shaded under a canopy of 140-year-old olive trees that are surrounded by a year-round display of blooming wildflowers. Emus are a popular added bonus during visits to Koehler!

Lincourt Vineyards

Surrounded by California pepper trees and overlooking the Alamo Pintado Vineyard near Solvang, Lincourt retains the rural charm and simplicity of an earlier era. They produce hand-crafted, small-lot wines aged from grapes grown on three vineyards and aged in French oak barrels

Peake Ranch Winery

Located on the eastern end of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, Peake Ranch is a 105-acre parcel with 50 acres of vines. The plantings include seven different clones of Pinot Noir, three clones of Chardonnay, and two each of Syrah and Grenache. Peake Ranch believes that by working in concert with nature, exceptional wines can be achieved.

Refugio Ranch Vineyards (Tasting Room)

Soak in the rustic beauty and history of Santa Ynez at this lovely tasting room built in 1912. Featuring two tasting bars, a VIP lounge, and an expansive outdoor deck, this is one of the largest tasting locations in Los Olivos.

Rideau Vineyard*

Family-owned and operated for over 20 years, Rideau specializes in small production Rhone wines, enjoyed on their beautiful grounds in the Santa Ynez Valley. * Monday-Thursday only.

Roblar Winery

Nestled in an oak tree-studded 40-acre vineyard and located in the heart of Santa Barbara County, Roblar Winery & Vineyards reflects the spirit of Santa Ynez Valley — rustic, authentic, and bold. Their philosophy is to foster a unique visitor experience of bringing together great wine, great food, and great friends. They encourage guests to explore the estate — from their stunning 5,000 sq. ft. tasting room complete with an indoor-outdoor stone fireplace to the trellis-covered patio looking out over our expansive gardens.

Saarloos & Sons (Tasting Room)

Saarloos & Sons is a labor of love four generations in the making. All of their wines are under 400 cases in total production and some are as rare as 40 cases. Once a release is sold out it is gone forever. We visit their tasting room often for wine and cupcake pairings on our Wine & Cupcake Tour .

Story of Soil (Tasting Room)

Dedicated to making small-production wines crafted with intention, Story of Soil is a tasting room located in Los Olivos with authentic and passionate winemakers. There’s a story behind every bottle.

Sunstone Winery

Sunstone Vineyards, Winery, and Villa is an organic vineyard retreat. Guests enjoy tasting in their Provençal French courtyards, stone barrel-aging caves, and picnic grounds.

The Brander Vineyard

Step inside a mini-castle and taste wine fit for royalty. The Brander Vineyard was established in 1975, making it the oldest family-operated estate winery in Santa Barbara County. Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon, varieties for which Fred Brander served as a pioneer in planting, flourish in this area.

Vega Vineyard & Farm

Established in 1853. With a concentration on their estate vineyard, Vega has sought to produce wines that are “a window to a place.” Each one of their wines is different in expression, with its own subtle, yet distinctive character and voice.

Vincent Vineyards

Vincent Vineyards is known for its wonderful indoor and outdoor seating, friendly service, and incredible wine. When you sit outside you are at eye level with the vines and feel completely immersed in the wine-tasting experience. Vincent was established in 2005 and the owner has a multitude of worldly experiences and connections on the walls of the winery. It feels as though you are walking through a museum with a glass of wine in your hand!

Their award-winning collection of wines is made using old-world techniques and distributed both nationally and internationally.

Demetria Winery (Private tours only) *

Ranging from 1,100 ft. to 1,450 ft. above sea level, Demetria’s vineyard is one of the highest in the appellation, allowing for incredible wines and views. Demetria is also one of the first vineyards in Santa Barbara County to be farmed biodynamically. Named after their daughter Demetria, and the Greek goddess of harvest Demeter, John and wife Sandra purchased the estate in 2005. They are well known for their Rhone and Burgundy-style wines, excellent service, and idyllic setting in the hills of Foxen Canyon. *Additional fees apply.

Fess Parker Winery & Vineyard (Private tours only)*

Established in 1988, Fess Parker Winery is situated among a 110-acre estate vineyard featuring a lovely terrace and grounds. *Additional fees apply.

Folded Hills (Private tours only)*

Tucked behind the coastal mountains of Santa Barbara County, they are the closest winery to the ocean. Their new location is the original dwelling of a simple homesteader who settled here in 1898.  They craft beautiful wines with a focus on purity. Keeping this in mind, their farming and cellar work are all organic. You can also meet and feed the animals, including KuneKune pigs, miniature donkeys, goats, and their miniature Jersey cow.

*Additional fees may apply. Maximum of 4 guests.

COVID-Update: Wineries are frequently adapting/editing their policies and we can not guarantee the possibility of doing a tasting at each winery. Glasses or bottles might be the only option available in lieu of tastings and some wineries might require the purchase of food. Many wineries do not allow outside food.

Located on the southern end of the Central Coast appellation, Santa Barbara County is about 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles, California. The history of this wine country can be traced back to five million years ago: tectonic activity thrust up a huge part of the land, rotated it, and created a geologic anomaly. As a result, the mountain ranges in Santa Barbara County are transverse and run east to west—unlike the rest of California where the mountains are parallel to the coastline, positioned in a north-south direction. This topographical feature creates wind tunnels, which enable cool air to flow from the Pacific Ocean into the valleys of Santa Barbara County, keeping the temperatures moderate during the day and cool at night. The Pacific Ocean also creates morning fog that cools and protects the grapes in the vineyards.  All in all, Santa Barbara County is characterized by little to no rainfall especially during the harvest period, a lot of sunshine, and extremely long growing seasons.

These climatic and geographical features have helped Santa Barbara County become a sublime spot for viticulture. The multitude of microclimates and soil types provide a perfect place for a wide variety of grapes. In fact, Santa Barbara is one of the oldest wine-producing areas in California, with the first wine grapes planted by the missionaries in the late 1700s. The modern commercial production as we know it today came about in 1960 when the first commercial vineyard was planted in Tepusquet in Santa Maria Valley.

Despite all the attention, Santa Barbara County remains somewhat alternative, especially in comparison to the other California’s wine regions.

Initially, most of the fruit produced was shipped out of the county to be vinified. Then, in 1962, Santa Barbara Winery , the first post-prohibition commercial winery in the county was established. In 1975, Firestone became the first estate winery to make wine using its own locally grown grapes.

The biggest revolution happened in the early 1980s when Santa Barbara became known for its independent winemakers with larger-than-life personalities. Among the first generation of winemakers that arrived in the county included Bill Wathen ( Foxen Vineyard & Winery ), Bob Lindquist ( Qupé ), Bryan Babcock ( Babcock Winery & Vineyards ), Chris Whitcraft ( Whitcraft Winery ), Jim Clendenen ( Au Bon Climat ), Ken Brown ( Ken Brown Wines ), Lane Tanner (now Lumen Wines ), Richard Sanford (now Alma Rosa Winery ), and Rick Longoria ( Longoria Wines ).

Qupe Winery Bob Lindquist

Qupé’s founder, Bob Lindquist, is a distinguished winemaking veteran and has mentored dozens of famous winemakers in the Central Coast. (Photo is provided by the winery.)

The spirit of innovation and quality permeated this wine country . Loads of delicious wines were coming out of Santa Barbara that could have built the area’s reputation single-handedly. Then, in 2004, the critically acclaimed film Sideways was released. Most of the movie was shot and set there; the film’s popularity and the protagonist’s affinity for Pinot Noir further enhanced the wine country’s shining reputation.

Today, the Santa Barbara County’s wine industry is said to generate around $1.7 billion of annual revenue and account for more than 9,000 full-time jobs. There are about 200 wineries in the region and more than 27,000 acres of vines.

Despite all the attention, Santa Barbara County remains somewhat alternative, especially in comparison to the other California’s wine regions. There is electricity in the air as an abundance of veteran experience and young talent keep the wine scene fresh.

Wine Growing Areas

At around 3,730 square miles in size, Santa Barbara Wine Country offers unique topography and climatic diversity that give birth to six official AVAs (American Viticultural Areas). The distance between the grape-growing area and the cooling effects of the Pacific Ocean is a key factor that shapes the characteristics of each AVA. The western areas are cooler, while the eastern reaches are warmer. The grapes also show considerable vineyard-to-vineyard variation within each AVA. The highest vineyard sits on a plateau at over 3,000 feet above sea level.

santa barbara county ava wine map

Map by Santa Barbara Vintners.

Santa Maria Valley AVA

Established in 1981, Santa Maria Valley is the northernmost and oldest AVA of the region and the third oldest in the United States. It sees direct access to the cool ocean breezes but without the topography that creates a natural wind tunnel. The vines are mostly planted on the slopes of rolling hillsides with well-drained sandy loam and clay-loam soils, at elevations between 300 and 800 feet.

There are several varieties grown here—including Albariño, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier—but the flagships are Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Chardonnays from this appellation can range from lean with crisp acidity to full-bodied with a floral tone. Noted for its slightly spicy and earthy characteristics, the Pinot Noir here can taste vastly different from the ones in Sta. Rita Hills. Overall, the wines from the Santa Maria Valley AVA tend to have a nice acidic backbone, high drinkability, yet not shy on complexity.

Total Area : Around 98,000 acres in southern San Luis Obispo County and northern Santa Barbara County Planted Area : ~7,500 acres Notable Vineyards: Bien Nacido, Cambria, Foxen, Nielson, Sierra Madre, and Tepusquet

Santa Ynez Valley AVA

A long east-west corridor with varying temperature: the west side of the valley is cooler as it is closer to the Pacific breeze while the east side and further inland are significantly warmer. The Santa Ynez Valley AVA has the largest concentration of wineries and the most varied grape varieties. The climatic diversity here enables the cultivation of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and varieties of Bordeaux and Rhône—including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache, Marsanne, Mourvèdre, Roussanne, Syrah, and Viognier. Small amounts of Arneis, Gewürztraminer, and Riesling can also be found here.

The Santa Ynez Valley AVA boasts various soil types, ranging from sand to gravel, loam, and diatomaceous earth (i.e. deposits of fossilized marine life that are high in Calcium Silicate). All of these soil types provide excellent drainage and are highly suitable for viticulture.

Please note that four other AVAs are nestled within Santa Ynez Valley; they are Sta. Rita Hills, Happy Canyon, Ballard Canyon, and Los Olivos District.

Sta. Rita Hills AVA

Created in 2001, this AVA was known as Santa Rita Hills up until 2006, when the name was changed to Sta. Rita Hills because a Chilean wine producer called Viña Santa Rita objected to the original spelling. This is the westernmost AVA and has direct access to the cool ocean breeze. The hills act as narrow corridors and the breeze blows through them, creating a cool climate in this wine-growing area.

There are about 20 cool-climate wine grapes planted here. The majority of the plantings are Pinot Noir and a good portion is Chardonnay. The sites in Sta. Rita Hills make a distinct difference in the flavor profiles of these two grapes. In Chardonnay, expect mineral, smoke, or flint characteristic. For Pinot Noir wines, most are rich and concentrated with red fruit accent. There tends to be more stem inclusion used in the vinification of Pinot Noir here, which can lend interesting flavors and tannins to the wines. Pinot Noirs, especially the single-vineyard bottlings, that bear the Sta. Rita Hills AVA are said to perform better after five years of barrel and bottle aging.

Total Area : Over 30,000 acres Planted Area : ~2,700 acres Notable Vineyards: Acin, Ampelos, Babcock, Cargasacchi, Clos Pepe, El Jabali, Fe Ciega, Fiddlestix, Hapgood, John Sebastiano, Kessler-Haak, La Encantada, La Rinconada, Lafond, Machado, Melville, Mt. Carmel, Rita’s Crown, Sanford and Benedict, Sea Smoke, Sweeney Canyon, Zotovich

Happy Canyon AVA

This is the most inland AVA and because of that, it is significantly warmer than the other AVAs. It is at the far eastern edge of the Santa Ynez Valley AVA and has shown promise with Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc. Syrah is also planted here. The wines from the Happy Canyon AVA can be exciting, especially the Cabernet Sauvignon blends which tend to express ripe fruit notes without being overbearing. The soil types are made up of a mixture of loam and clay loam with red and yellow chert and serpentine cobbles.

Total Area : ~24,000 acres Planted Area : ~500 acres Notable Vineyards: Grassini, Happy Canyon, Star Lane, Vogelzang

Ballard Canyon AVA

Located near the town of Buellton, this is the smallest AVA of the region. The Ballard Canyon AVA is known for producing Rhône-style wines. The majority of the plantings here are Syrah. Other varieties planted include Grenache, Sangiovese, Roussanne, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Petite Sirah, and small amounts of Chardonnay. The vines are planted in clay or sand. In the northern part of the AVA, limestone substrate lies under clay topsoil. The reds from this area tend to be aromatic, fruit-forward, rich, and slightly earthy, with approachable tannins.

Total Area : ~7,700 acres Planted Area : ~300 acres Notable Vineyards: Beckmen, Harrison Clarke, Jonata, Larner, Stolpman, Tierra Alta

Los Olivos District AVA

Established in January 2016, this is the newest AVA of the county. It sits within a triangle created by the towns of Solvang, Santa Ynez, and Los Olivos. From a geological perspective, it is fairly uniform and produces a handful of interesting wines from Bordeaux and Rhône varieties. Italian and Spanish varieties can also be found here. The soils consist of moderate to well-drained sandy loam and clay loam. The terrain slopes gently from north to south towards the water. As the Los Olivos District AVA is largely flat, machines and other automated support can be used here, as opposed to the neighboring wine-growing areas with steep, rugged terrains.

Total Area : 22,820 acres Planted Area: 1,121 acres Notable Vineyards: Baehner Fournier, Sunstone, Tensley

YOUR ADVENTURE STARTS HERE

appellation wine tours santa barbara

Please, select a wine region.

appellation wine tours santa barbara

March Madness has begun. Water cooler conversations center on Cinderella stories, acrobatic alley-oops, downtown treys, and gravity-defying hang time. Meanwhile, Santa Barbara wine region has no hometown favorite to cheer, but does have a different kind of hang time to celebrate.

Compared to other wine regions, the growing season here is longer, meaning that fruit has a considerably longer “hang time” on the vine.  An East-to-West oriented coastal valley, which is unique among California wine regions, allows a deep inland flow of cool, moist ocean air.  The lengthened ripening pattern and unique maritime conditions combine to foster world class wines with a distinct character.

The Santa Barbara wine region is home to six federally recognized American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), all sharing a temperate, Mediterranean-like coastal climate, but each with enough differential in terroir to justify a separate designation.

SANTA MARIA VALLEY

The region’s first officially approved AVA is the northernmost appellation in Santa Barbara County.  The often foggy and usually windswept Santa Maria Valley produces an abundance of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which thrive in the ocean’s influence.

SANTA YNEZ VALLEY

Santa Ynez Valley is a master AVA with several sub-AVA’s continued within its borders. The valley is a long, east-west corridor with cool temperatures on the coast that become progressively warmer inland. Consequently, several varietals flourish, from Pinot Noir in the west to Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah in the east.  When you come out on a wine tour with Grapeline, chances are you’ll spend most of your day in this versatile appellation, home to most of the region’s wineries.

STA. RITA HILLS

The marine influence is most pronounced in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation, a sub-AVA within the Santa Ynez Valley AVA, located on the westernmost end of the valley.  Cooler air make this appellation an ideal place to cultivate its hallmark cool-weather varietals: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.  Several of my favorite Pinot producers - including Foley, Melville and Sanford - call the Santa Rita Hills their home.

HAPPY CANYON OF SANTA BARBARA

Happy Canyon is the newest AVA in the region. Located on the far eastern edge of the Santa Ynez Valley AVA, it inhabits the base of the San Rafael Mountains near Lake Cachuma. This warmer inland region is best suited for growing Bordeaux varieties like Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc.

BALLARD CANYON

Ballard Canyon, the self-proclaimed “Heart of Santa Barbara Wine Country,” is situated right in the center of the encompassing Santa Ynez Valley viticultural area.  More than half the vines in its relatively small 7,700 acres are Syrah, and most of the remaining vines are other Rhône varietals including Grenache, Viognier, and Roussanne.

LOS OLIVOS DISTRICT

The townships of Ballard, Santa Ynez, Los Olivos, and Solvang all lie within the Los Olivos District AVA, helping ensure that its wineries are among the most visited in the region. The alluvial plain between the Purisima Hills above Solvang and the western flank of the Happy Canyon area results in relatively uniform topography, geology, and soil make-up.

Regardless of who you’ve picked for your final four, these six appellations are consistent fan favorites.
