Ball State Campus Tour

What will you see during your ball state university walking tour.

During your Ball State campus tour, your guide might share some jokes about how students see the campus and the general area. Your walking tour will help you see the statue of Beneficence that was built to commemorate the brothers who founded the university. You will tour the David Letterman Center, named after one of its famous alumni. During your walking tour, you will also see the different dormitories on campus. Some academic buildings and facilities will also be toured during your visit. Your tour guide will also give you information about the university’s history, its historical connections with the town of Muncie, and what student life is like on campus.

What majors is Ball State known for

I'm Billy and I'm going to take you on a magical journey through Ball State's beautiful campus and exciting history. That way, we can learn a little bit more about what makes this school the absolute best mid-sized public university in east central Indiana.

Ball State is located in Muncie, Indiana, a mid-sized town about an hour north east of Indianapolis. Muncie’s story is also a vibrant one–a tale of heroism, love, community, change, and hope. Even with its rich history, Muncie still has a lot going for it in the year 2014.

Muncie features a vibrant downtown district with 3 separate McDonald's. The real story of Muncie doesn't begin until the late 1800s when the Ball brothers moved a small Teacher’s College out here that would later become the university we know and love. In 1937, we built this statue named Beneficence to commemorate their willingness to give.

How does it feel to kiss someone you love

Now there are a lot of campus legends around Benny, as we call her. In fact they say if you kiss your true love right here at midnight and it's really true love, she'll flap her wings with joy. They also say when a virgin graduates, she flies away forever. There's more Ball State to explore so let's grab some friends and have a look around.

To your right, you're going to see frog baby, one of Ball State's many campus treasures, a statue built to commemorate one of the Ball brothers’ siblings who was turned into a frog by a Gypsy’s curse.

We're coming up on the David Letterman Center. Letterman is one of our more famous alumni. Some say actually that if you listen closely enough, you can still hear his ghost moaning from the editing bay.

Hope to see you all next time

Ball State actually also has many national awards including over 50 Emmys. Do we have any telecommunications majors in the group? That’s cool.

This is LaFollette Complex, Ball State University's largest dorm and the one freshmen are most likely to be put into. It's yet to be officially condemned and there's a full food court in the basement.

This way, you'll see Woodworth, Ball State’s only all-girls dorm.

On your left, you'll see the College of Theater and Dance where some of the nation's best performers all come to perform.

I hope the next time I see you, it's as Cardinals. If no one has any more questions, you're all free to go. Have a great day, everyone.

Beyond the Nest: Making connections abroad with Ball State alumni

Any ung rangarajan tells students to "embrace being uncomfortable" in order to succeed.

Ball State students with alum, Any Ung, during a tour of Technip Energies where Ung is Communications Lead.

Ball State students with alum, Any Ung, during a tour of Technip Energies where Ung is Communications Lead.

Editor's note: This is the second piece in a series written by students and faculty in a study abroad program — “Travel Writing through Italy and France” — a project-based immersive learning course to capture the flavors, culture, history and natural beauty of France and Italy.

By Jason Doudt

Paris, France – In May, ten journalism students of Ball State University traveled to Europe for a study abroad experience titled “Travel Writing in France and Italy.” During the visit, our professor, Kate Elliot, coordinated meetings with notable alumni who work internationally. These experiences enriched our journey as many of us aspire to work in different corners of the world. The most personally impactful rendezvous was with a communications lead at a high-level energy company.

Headquartered in the business district of Paris, France, Technip Energies is a company that specializes in the realization of environmental projects. Technip Energies is among the countries’ forward-thinking enterprises. They value sustainability and renewable energy sources while they envision a greener and cleaner future for the entire world. Technip operates at an international level, with most of its partners being in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, or the United States. Their engineers assist in the construction and training of energy production facilities around the globe.

Ball State University also operates at an international level, and being a Cardinal means leaving the nest and flying. The networks and communities of college do not disappear after graduation - in fact, many of us make our way onto bigger stages. By retaining these connections, we create an international web of professionals, executives, and most importantly: lifelong learners.

Any Ung Rangarajan, who received her Master’s of Communication at Ball State University, hosted our group of students as we partake in our international writing residency. After receiving her master’s degree, Any worked for the school she graduated from, pioneering a new position within the College of Communication, Information, and Media. Now, she returns to her home country of France to be the Communications Lead at Technip Energies. Her role is to produce multimedia storytelling for external audiences as well as informative internal communications to connect and empower its 15,000 employees. She collaborates with a team of writers and visual storytellers positioned at Technip’s locations across the globe.

Their Paris facility is modern, sleek, and striking - it also runs on geothermal energy. We were required to watch a safety briefing before receiving specialized credentials. We learned about the company’s latest billion-dollar project in Qatar as well as its other energy transfer and construction ventures.

She very graciously allowed us to tour parts of the facility and introduced us to other staff. One of the employees who made an impression on me was Victor Nicolas, a communications and multimedia production officer, also a polite and educated young man. During the visit, the students were given a presentation on the importance of Technip’s many energy programs while enjoying traditional French pastries and coffee.

ball state college visit

Overall, the experience heightened the students’ awareness of colleagues who live and work abroad. Graduation can make the world feel inaccessible as the safety blanket of the small community is pulled away and you are forced to assimilate into the larger working force.

However, in France, the working culture prioritizes the human capital. Most businesses undergo diversity processes that give each individual the best opportunity to match their job to their skill set. French work/life balance is not a suggestion, but a priority. Employees get mandatory lunch breaks outside of the facility and up to 30 days of vacation time. Technip Energies represents the forward-thinking nature of French culture. The facility is tidy and the rules prohibit idling cars and smoking. By simply walking near the headquarters, one can notice how impeccably clean the area is.

A stark contrast to the historic districts, the business district of La Défense is as uniquely Parisian as any other area. It may seem like a crowded city, but it is still people-focused with pedestrian-centered infrastructure. Technip Energies is located directly across from Paris La Défense Arena, a stadium that will host events during the upcoming Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. It is a beautiful place to behold.

Any ended her talk with advice for us as we begin careers in journalism, communications, and marketing. She reminded us to embrace being uncomfortable. She gave us several examples of times she has grown through personal experiences that pushed her outside of her comfort zone. Those experiences equipped her with the agility and creativity to succeed.

We are very thankful to Any Ung Rangarajan and her colleagues for hosting us during their workday, providing us with breakfast, and inspiring us to continue pursuing our international dreams. There are many Cardinals who have taken on important, high-impact jobs around the world, and Any is just one stellar example. Before leaving, we posed for a picture outside of La Défense Arena, proudly displaying the Chirp! Chrip! symbol with our fingers.

Despite the challenges of international travel presenting themselves day by day, we have always prevailed. Through hard work and dedication, we will always spread our wings, proving to the world that no matter the difficulty or distance – We Fly.

Let’s Talk About Sex: Discussions of sex, or lack thereof, in Indiana schools are leaving students frustrated

For every 1,000 births in Indiana, 17 of them are from 15 to 19 year olds. America’s Health Rankings shows that regardless of the lowering teen pregnancy rates in the nation, Indiana has one of the highest rates in the country. However, despite the high rate, sex education is not required in the state.

Texas A&M fans kicked out of stadium after allegedly taunting coach over double-murder and suicide involving batboy

Texas A&M Aggies head coach Jim Schlossnagle and Florida Gators head coach Kevin O'Sullivan meet before a College World Series game on Saturday, June 15, 2024.

Two Texas A&M fans were thrown out of a College World Series game after they apparently taunted Florida’s baseball coach over his peripheral ties to a lurid double-murder and suicide three years ago, police said Monday.

The ugly incident unfolded late Saturday in the first inning of the rain-delayed Aggies-Gators game at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska.

A close play at third base went against Florida, and ESPN cameras were focused on the Gators’ dugout to see whether Florida would challenge the umpire's call.

But what they captured were two men, decked out in A&M gear, leaning into Florida's dugout and screaming at Gators coach Kevin O'Sullivan before stadium security peeled them away.

“Those folks were banned and barred from the stadium, so they will no longer be attending any more games,” Omaha Police Lt. Neal Bonacci told NBC News on Monday.

The unidentified fans will be persona non grata for the rest of the tournament, though their future CWS attendance will be decided by ballpark management, local law enforcement and the NCAA, a stadium official said.

"We're having ongoing discussions on that, but the last I understand, this [stadium ban] will likely be for a year," said Kristyna Engdahl, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority, which operates the stadium.

The union representing Omaha police officers decried the incident and urged tournament organizers to make sure the A&M fans never get into another CWS game.

"Heckling an opposing baseball team about the tragic death of their batboy is beyond unacceptable," the union said. "Glad our officers and security threw this duo out of Charles Schwab Field."

In early May 2021, medical sales executive Paul Otto Reinhart, 46, killed his two young sons and himself after having recently separated from his wife of nearly 20 years, Minde Reinhart.

O'Sullivan was a family friend of Reinhart's, and one of the slain boys had been a Gators batboy.

The boys' mother went on to marry O'Sullivan and form a foundation named after the victims .

Eric Sorenson, a writer who follows college baseball, said the two A&M fans were "saying that he killed someone" and that he should "be ashamed" of himself before stadium security moved in.

Engdahl, the stadium management spokesperson, called Saturday night’s dugout scene an “unfortunate” incident of “disruptive behavior and abusive language.”

“And this certainly falls within that realm for removal from the ballpark,” she added.

After the game, which A&M won 3-2, Aggies coach Jim Schlossnagle said he doesn't want to see those two fans at any future games.

“I want to apologize on behalf of Texas A&M for whatever the heck went on over there in that dugout,” Schlossnagle said. “Whoever those two guys are, they don’t represent what Texas A&M is all about, and whoever they are, just don’t come back. Let’s not let those two guys back in the ballpark.”

Florida staved off elimination, defeating North Carolina State, 5-4, on Monday afternoon. The Gators next play Tuesday night against Kentucky in another elimination game.

St. John's transfer Glenn Taylor Jr. to visit Memphis basketball | Report

ball state college visit

Memphis basketball will host St. John's transfer Glenn Taylor Jr. this week, according to CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein.

Tiger coach Penny Hardaway has almost completely made over his roster, so far signing seven Division I transfers and one incoming freshman to go along with one returning scholarship player. But, with at least three open scholarships remaining, Hardaway has one more prominent need: a wing.

Enter Taylor. The 6-foot-6 small forward, who began his career at Oregon State before spending last season at St. John's, is one of the few players left in the transfer portal with some size who can also knock down some 3-pointers. Taylor is originally from Las Vegas and finished his high school career at Arizona Compass Prep. He averaged 4.4 points and 2.2 rebounds a game at St. John's last season. But he shot 42.4% beyond the arc, albeit with limited opportunities (25-of-59). In two seasons at Oregon State, Taylor shot 28.9% from deep (32 for 112).

Taylor committed to Grand Canyon coach Bryce Drew in mid-May, only to decommit earlier this month. Rothstein also reported Ohio State is "in the mix" and that other schools such as Texas, Oklahoma State, BYU, Auburn and Utah are also interested in Taylor.

The Tigers have addressed the backcourt (Tyrese Hunter, PJ Haggerty, Colby Rogers) and the frontcourt (Dain Dainja, Moussa Cisse, Tyreek Smith) this offseason. But landing a wing to help mitigate the effect of David Jones' decision to stay in the NBA Draft has been a bit tricky. Top candidates like Jamir Watkins (Florida State) and Trevon Brazile (Arkansas) decided not to transfer. Arthur Kaluma is another strong option, but Memphis is not considered a contender for his services.

MEMPHIS BASKETBALL MAILBAG: Arthur Kaluma, frontcourt rotation, replacing David Jones' offense

Taylor's production at St. John's last season does not exactly fall in line with the numbers he put up while at Oregon State. As a freshman, he averaged 6.9 points per game. Taylor followed that up by scoring 11.7 a game while playing 30.1 minutes per game.

 While we haven't been able to bring you our regular live coverage, we have been keeping an eye on today's latest developments.

Here are the key updates:

 • The Ukrainian military issued a rare statement confirming it had struck four oil refineries in Russia during an early morning drone attack;
 • South Korea summoned the Russian ambassador over the country's new defence pact with North Korea;
 • A Russian guided bomb killed two people and wounded three others in the eastern Ukrainian town of Selydove, according to regional prosecutors;
 • European Union countries have formally approved the launch of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova next week;
 • Vladimir Putin said Russia would keep developing its arsenal of nuclear weapons to preserve the "balance of power in the world".

Here's a look at the latest situation on the ground:

That's all of our live coverage on the conflict for now.

We'll bring you any major developments overnight, and we'll be back with our regular updates in the morning.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he is "deeply grateful" for Joe Biden's decision to prioritise air defence deliveries for Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president said his country was in critical need of the capabilities to protect its cities and civilians from Russian attacks.

"The partnership between Ukraine and the United States is strong and unwavering. Together, we are protecting life against terror and aggression," he added.

It comes after the US said a recent defence pact signed by Russia and North Korea was a "cause for concern".

The recently signed defence pact between Russia and North Korea is a cause of concern but is no surprise, the White House has said.

Speaking to reporters, White House spokesman John Kirby said the agreement between the two countries was a sign of Russia's desperation for foreign assistance in the Ukraine war.

The deal has seen both countries vow to help each other if they faced armed aggression, and replaces previous treaties between the countries.

Russia said the pact was needed because of "the deep evolution of the geopolitical situation in the world and the region".

Mr Kirby also said the US would reprioritise planned deliveries of foreign military equipment to go to Ukraine, which is in "desperate need" of more air defence capabilities.

Vladimir Putin has warned that South Korea would be making a "big mistake" if it decides to supply weapons to Ukraine.

The Russian president's comments come after South Korea said a new defence agreement between North Korea and Moscow was "absurd" and it would reconsider sending arms to Kyiv as a result.

Mr Putin said Seoul had nothing to worry about when it came to the mutual defence pact.

Russian state media quoted him as saying that Moscow expected its cooperation with North Korea to serve as a deterrent to the West.

He also refused to rule out supplying high-precision weapons to the country.

Russia is considering making changes to its nuclear weapons doctrine, Vladimir Putin has said.

The Russian president made the comments while speaking to reporters at the end of his Vietnam trip.

The existing doctrine states that Russia may use such weapons in response to a nuclear strike or in the event of a conventional attack that poses an existential threat to the country.

Ukrainian troops have been launching mid-range reconnaissance drones in Kharkiv.

Russian forces crossed into parts of the northeastern region last month, and officials claim they have seized at least a dozen villages.

But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Kyiv's forces are gradually pushing Russian troops out of the contested area.

A police search is under way for a woman who allegedly desecrated the graves of Ukrainian soldiers.

Kyiv city's prosecutor's office said the unknown woman vandalised the graves this morning.

Commemorative plaques and lamps were torn off and broken, it said.

The Ukrainian flag was also "mutilated", it added.

"Operational investigations and searches are being carried out to establish the woman's identity," the office said in post on Telegram.

If caught and found guilty, the woman could face up to five years in prison.

We have been reporting today on Vladimir Putin's visit to Vietnam.

Here is a recap of what the Russian president has been up to:

 • Mr Putin signed a series of deals with his Vietnamese counterpart To Lam during his state visit;
 • The two leaders signed agreements to further co-operation on education, science and technology, oil and gas exploration and health;
 • They also agreed to work on a road map for a nuclear science and technology centre in Vietnam;
 • Following the talks, Mr Putin said that the two countries share an interest in "developing a reliable security architecture" in the Asia-Pacific region based on not using force and peacefully settling disputes with no room for "closed military-political blocs";
 • The Russian leader also met Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and is scheduled to meet Communist Party general secretary Nguyen Phu Trong - Vietnam's most powerful politician;
 • The trip has resulted in a sharp rebuke from the US embassy in the country.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Romania's decision to provide his country with two Patriot air defence systems will strengthen security in Ukraine and throughout Europe.

"This crucial contribution will bolster our air shield and help us better protect our people and critical infrastructure from Russian air terror," the Ukrainian president said on X.

The Patriot, which stands for Phased Array Tracking Radar for Intercept on Target, is a surface-to-air missile defence system.

For months now, Ukraine has been calling for countries to provide more air defence systems to help protect it from Russian attacks.
