The cruise port of Belize City (in the country of Belize) has a good number of world-class attractions like the Mayan archeological sites of Xunantunich , Altun Ha , or Lamanai . And there are also lots of wildlife adventures to enjoy both in the ocean and in the lush tropical forest.

Although, all these attractions are located between 33 miles (53 km) and 78 miles (126 km) from the cruise terminal, cruise passengers will not find much to see or do near the port besides exploring the cruise terminal known as Fort Street Tourism Village .

Belize City , the country's largest urban center has a few interesting landmarks and is just around the corner from the cruise terminal but is not particularly appealing (nor safe) to explore on your own.

The cruise port of Belize City on Fort Street Tourism Village possesses an appealing atmosphere, the area is clean and well maintained. However, Belize City itself is known for not being particularly safe.

The local population typically tends to be friendly, polite, and speak English very well. For those cruising with families, there is a lot do. Cruise passengers with disabilities or with walking difficulties may find it a bit challenging to wander around in on your own.

Where is Belize and the cruise port

Although Belmopan is the country's capital, Belize City is the largest city with a population of around 110,000. Belize City is located in the eponymous district, on the East coast of the country bathed by the Caribbean Sea.

The cruise port is 191.67 nautical miles (354.97 km) south of Cozumel cruise port, 118.25 nautical miles (219 km) northwest of Roatan and 407.21 nautical miles (754.15 km) west of Grand Cayman.

Anchoring and tender boats in Belize City port

Cruise ships do not dock in Belize City port. Because the Caribbean Sea waters are too shallow by the port, cruise ships anchor around 2 miles from the coast and large boats operated by local authorities transfer passengers to the Fort Street Tourism Village .

The tender operation typically takes around 20 minutes. The cruise terminal is a secluded (and safe) area just a stone’s throw away from the historic center of Belize City.

Cruise Terminal and services

Cruise travelers will find in the terminal building all basic services and modern amenities, many typical shops found all over the Caribbean and a few restaurants.

Shuttle bus in Belize

Due to the proximity of the cruise terminal to Belize City and because there isn't much to see downtown, the port does not operate a shuttle bus.

Things to do in Belize City cruise port

The port of Belize City is a stunning port for cruise travelers interested in Mayan archeologic sites, for those who appreciate breathtaking scenic sights, magnificent natural wonders, wildlife parks, zoos, or bird watching. There are lots of attractive options for cruise visitors looking forward to relaxing on a secluded beach and genuinely enjoy watersports.

Belize offers great outdoor activities both onland and in the Ocean some of which are ideal for those cruising with families including thrilling pursuits for the most adventurous.

In the Belize City cruise port, you can also savor local flavors and cuisine and shop for duty-free jewelry and watches. Once again, it must be emphasized that Belize City is far from ideal for cruise passengers that enjoy exploring cruise ports on your own and/or on foot.

This said, if you do not have such a legitimate concern, keep in mind that the tender boats dock at the Fort Street Tourism Village , which is right by Belize City downtown. However, two of the most interesting landmarks in Belize City are on distinct sides of the river and not so close to the exit gates of the cruise terminal.

  • Museum of Belize Distance from cruise port:  0.9 mile (1.7 km) north bank of the river.
  • St John Cathedral Distance from cruise port:  (1.8 km) south bank, across the Swing Bridge.

How to explore Belize for cruise passengers

Unless you earnestly wish to explore a couple of historic landmarks in Belize City on foot, almost all highlights and principal attractions in the cruise port require traveling between 15 and 80 miles. Therefore, the best way for cruise visitors to explore, discover, and enjoy Belize is with Shore Excursions. The only exceptions are Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker , which can be reached by water taxi. More about this in the following paragraphs.

Shore excursions (shorex)

Explore on your own

Very few sites, attractions, and highlights can be adequately explored on your own in Belize for the simple fact that public transportation is far from good. There are a few car rentals available but once you drive to sites, it is not easy to explore these without guides. More about car rentals in the following paragraphs. The only good and advisable service for cruise passengers is the San Pedro Water Taxi, which runs regular ferries between Belize City and Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker.

These modern water taxis depart from a pier which is less than a 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal. In 2020, the return ticket to San Pedro (on Ambergris Caye) costs $30.00 and to Caye Calker US$50.00. For updated schedule, tickets and online booking see: Belize Water Taxi

In a country with a fertile tropical forest, fresh fruit is a must: passion fruit, starfruit, jackfruit, dragon fruit, guava, papaya, mango, and pineapples are out of this world.

Belize Cruise Port Guide | 6 Best Things To Do In Belize Port

Starfish island, Belize

Welcome to Belize cruise port!

Belize is a Caribbean country located on the northeastern coast of Central America, bordering Mexico, Guatemala, and the Caribbean Sea. Known for its rich Mayan cultural heritage, countless little islands (cayes), and Belize Barrier Reef – the second-longest reef in the world, Belize is a popular stop in the Caribbean cruise itineraries. In this article, read about:

  • Belize cruise port (Belize cruise terminal, getting around, helpful info)

Belize Cruise Port

Belize cruise port is a tender port, which means that ships anchor off the coast of Belize and use tender boats to transfer passengers ashore. The tender ride takes about 15-20 minutes and passengers are transferred to the Fort Street Tourism Village dock , located within a short walk from Belize City – the former capital of Belize.

Once you arrive at the dock, you’ll see a shopping village in front of you with four terminal areas featuring numerous bars and eateries, tour and car rental booths, and dozens of duty-free shops.

The terminal areas are the following: Terminal Area 1 “REEF”, Terminal Area 2 “JAGUAR”, Terminal Area 3 “MAYA”, and Terminal Area 4 “PIRATE”. Make sure you remember which terminal you disembark at because this will be the terminal where you’ll wait for your tender to take you back to your ship. There may be more ships in port, so make sure you get on the right one to avoid delays and inconveniences.

The port area is safe. Upon exiting the port security gates, turn right on Fort St, and after a couple of minutes’ walk you’ll reach the Belize Welcome Sign and an iconic red and white Baron Bliss lighthouse.

However, it is not recommended to venture too far into Belize due to safety reasons. The best way to maximize your stay in Belize is to have an organized plan on what to do once you arrive in port.

Major cruise lines sailing to Belize include Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, MSC Cruises, and Viking Ocean Cruises .

Getting Around Port of Belize

  • The port area is flat and wheelchair accessible.
  • There is no beach within walking distance.
  • Belize is the only country in Central America where English is an official language.
  • The best way to get around Belize is by taxi or on a shore excursion . Licensed taxis have green license plates and they are not metered, so make sure you agree on the price before the ride. Alternatively, you can book a shore excursion with your cruise line or a reputable independent tour operator.
  • Belize is not so safe to wander around on your own. The nearest attractions are located at a minimum 30-minute drive, so booking an organized trip is convenient due to the ship’s limited time in port. In addition, if you book a shore excursion that involves a boat ride, you’ll be picked up and brought back straight to the ship (no need for a ferry boat ride to the Tourism Village).
  • Water taxis are another convenient transportation option for those of you who want to go to the islands of Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye. Water taxis depart from a terminal that is located less than a 10-minute walk from the Tourism Village, close to Terminal 4 and Jungle Gift Shop. It takes about 1.5 hours one way to reach the resort town of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, while a trip to Caye Caulker takes 45 minutes one way. The departures are not so frequent (there is one departure hourly or in two hours), so make sure you check the water taxi timetables beforehand at https://belizewatertaxi.com/
  • Belize Tourism Board is located in Belize City across the Swing Bridge on Regent St, a 15-minute walk from the Belize cruise terminal.
  • Fort Street Tourism Village offers the best shopping opportunities in Belize. You’ll find dozens of shops selling jewelry, local arts and crafts, souvenirs, tobacco, perfumes, clothing and more. The top-rated brands include Jungle Gift Shop, Diamonds International, Tanzanite International, Harley Davidson, Moho Chocolate Factory and Cafe, Pirana Joe, Cariloha and Del Sol.
  • Free Wi-Fi is available in some restaurants and bars in the Tourism Village cruise terminal.
  • The official currency in Belize is the Belize dollar (BZD). 1 USD equals 1.99 BZD. Credit cards and US dollars are accepted in the majority of shops and restaurants, but be sure to receive the change in US currency. ATMs are available in the Tourism Village and Belize City.
  • In 1962, after Hurricane Hattie, the country’s capital was moved from Belize City to Belmopan. However, Belize City is the country’s largest city and the main entry point for tourists.
  • Calypso Train Tour is an open-air trolley tour that goes around Belize City, past major landmarks. This tour is usually offered by cruise lines and is an interesting choice for those looking to learn about the history and culture of Belize.
  • Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport is located 18 km/11 miles (a 30-minute drive) northwest of the cruise port of Belize.
  • The peak season in Belize lasts from late November to mid-April when the weather is dry and warm. The wet season lasts from June to November, with hurricanes impacting every three years because the country lies within the hurricane belt.

What To See Within Walking Distance From the Port

  • Belize City’s downtown area is located within a short walking distance from the port. The cruise passengers may not feel particularly safe wandering around on their own and Belize City hasn’t got much to offer, so it’s recommended to book a guided tour. However, if you decide to stay, there are a few things you can do:
  • The Swing Bridge divides the city into two and is the only swing bridge operated manually that is still in function.
  • The Museum of Belize showcases artifacts tracing the history of Belize and is located only a 10-minute walk from the terminal.
  • St John Anglican Cathedral is a historic place of worship dating from the 19th century and is located a 20-minute walk from the port, across the Swing Bridge.
  • Government House , located near the cathedral, was built in 1812 and is nowadays a history museum.
  • The Baron Bliss lighthouse and Belize Welcome Sign lie only 200 m from the terminal and offer great photo ops.

6 Best Things to Do in Belize Cruise Port

Belize port is known for its breathtaking islands (cayes), barrier reefs, Mayan heritage sites, and tons of outdoor adventure activities such as cave tubing and kayaking, horseback riding, ziplining, snorkeling, diving and so much more!

1. Belize Cave Tubing

Cave tubing ranks among the best adventure activities you can do in Belize! The tour takes you into the rainforest outside of Belize City where you’ll float on a tube through a cave system featuring spectacular rock formations.

Cruise lines and independent tour operators offer various cave tubing excursions that take place at different locations such as Nohoch Che’en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve and Jaguar Paw (both around a 1h 10-minute drive from the port).

Cave tubing tours may include lunch or are combined with different experiences such as ziplining, kayaking, hiking, or a visit to Mayan archaeological ruins.

Upon booking a shore excursion, make sure you check the program of the tour. Also, keep in mind that there is at least a 45-minute drive each way to the rainforests and national parks where the caves are located.

2. Mayan Archaeological Ruins

Belize boasts a rich Mayan heritage and there are plenty of archaeological sites scattered around the country. The most famous one is the Altun Ha Temple featuring temple pyramids out of which the Temple of the Masonry Altars is the largest one (16 meters/52 ft high). Altun Ha covers an area of 8 square km and lies 53 km/33 miles (a 1-hour drive) northwest of the Belize cruise terminal.

Another famous ruin is Xunantunich Mayan Ruins , located near the town of San Ignacio, about 126 km/78 miles (a 2h 30-minute drive each way) southwest of the cruise port of Belize. This impressive archaeological site sits atop a ridge above the Mopan River and served as the Mayan civic ceremonial center of the Belize Valley region.

The site features the remnants of ancient plazas, temples and palaces, and the imposing El Castillo temple — the second tallest in Belize. From the top of El Castillo, you can admire stunning panoramic views stretching into Guatemala.

Lamanai Archaeological Reserve lies 127 km/79 miles (a 2h 20-minute drive) northwest of Belize port and is the second-largest site in Belize that was once a major city of the Maya civilization. Mask Temple, Temple of the Jaguar and High Temple are the main ruins offering beautiful views of the New River. The site also features a museum and local arts and crafts souvenir store.

3. Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

The Mesoamerican Reef is the second-largest barrier reef in the world offering incredible snorkeling and scuba diving. The Belizean waters are home to vibrant coral gardens, nurse sharks, stingrays, sea turtles and fascinating marine wildlife.

One of the most popular snorkeling and scuba diving locations is Hol Chan Marine Reserve which lies just off the coast of the islands of Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye. The protected reserve covers more than 18 square kilometers of coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove forests, and is also popular for fishing.

Another top-rated snorkeling and diving location is a 124-meter-deep Great Blue Hole , a deep blue circular sinkhole located on the Lighthouse Reef atoll.

4. Belize Beaches and Islands

Belize boasts over 150 miles of islands (cayes), the two largest ones being Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, two resort islands known for their incredible beauty and unspoiled nature.

Caye Caulker is a gorgeous, small coral island known for amazing snorkeling, scuba diving, and manatee spotting. Experience the thrill of swimming with nurse sharks at Shark Ray Alley and discover the colorful world of the shallow Coral Garden, one of the best snorkeling sites for inexperienced snorkelers.

Caye Caulker is known for its relaxed island vibe, pristine sandy beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters great for swimming and sunbathing. A boat ride from Belize port to Caye Caulker takes about 45 minutes each way by water taxi.

Ambergris Caye is Belize’s largest island and a top-rated destination renowned for its picture-perfect turquoise waters and water sports, including snorkeling, scuba diving and fishing. Ambergris Caye’s coastline is protected by the 190-mile-long barrier reef and the island itself is 25 miles long and a little over a mile wide.

The island was a trading post in Mayan times and boasts a rich historical heritage that you can learn by exploring a few small ruins scattered around the island.

The major resort town is San Pedro , the only inhabited area on the island famous for a wide variety of eateries, shops, small businesses and bustling nightlife. The boat ride to Ambergris Caye takes about 1.5 hours each way by water taxi.

Starfish Island (formerly known as Bannister’s Island) is often offered as a shore excursion as it’s within a 20-minute boat ride from the cruise port of Belize. Starfish Island is small and boasts a beautiful sandy beach where you can swim and snorkel.

The facilities available include sunbed/umbrella rentals, changing rooms, a small gift shop, a cafe and a restaurant where you can taste delicious Belizean dishes. I went to Starfish Island and wrote more about it in my article 7 Private Islands to Visit on a Cruise to the Caribbean

Starfish Island entrance, Belize

Half Moon Caye is an island and natural monument nestled at the southeast corner of Lighthouse Reef Atoll. It is part of the Belize Barrier Reef and is known for its bird sanctuary established in 1924. Half Moon Caye boasts a magnificent white sandy beach known as a sea turtle nesting ground. T

he entire island is protected as Half Moon Caye Natural Monument and can be visited on a day trip, however, a one-way boat trip takes about 2-3 hours, so it’s not convenient for cruise passengers.

5. Wildlife Sanctuaries

If you are looking to get to know Belize’s native wildlife, there are plenty of options to choose from. The Belize Zoo , located 48 km/30 miles (a 50-minute drive) southwest of the cruise port, houses native, orphaned and rehabilitated animals in their natural habitat.

The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center is home to over 200 animals, including over 45 native species. Set on 29 acres (12 hectares), the zoo is a great place to learn about the native wildlife of Belize’s jungles and savannas and get up close with jaguars, toucans and red-tailed boas. Belize Zoo is wheelchair accessible. Get more info at https://www.belizezoo.org/

Alternatively, you can go bird-watching in Little Guana Caye (situated off the coast of Ambergris Caye), go manatee-watching in the waters of Caye Caulker or visit the Community Baboon Sanctuary Visitor Center and Museum (A Black Howler Monkey Sanctuary) that offers tours through the rainforest and wildlife spotting. The sanctuary is located 44 km/27 miles (a 1-hour drive) west of the port of Belize. Find more info at https://www.howlermonkey.org/

Last but not least, you can also visit Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary , a nature preserve featuring a network of lagoons, swamps, and estuaries sheltering endangered species such as the Central American River Turtle (locally known as Hicatee), Mexican Black Howler Monkey, and Yellow-headed Parrot. The sanctuary is one of the best bird-watching spots in Central America and lies 59 km/37 miles (a 1h 15-minute drive) southwest of the cruise port in Belize.

6. Taste the Local Cuisine

Belize boasts a delicious mix of different cultural influences when it comes to food. Fort Street Tourism Village has several eateries and bars where you can try local specialties such as Cochinita Pibil (Yucatán-style slow-roasted pork dish), Hudut (a fish cooked in a coconut broth, served with plantains or yams), rice and beans, stewed chicken, fry jacks (buns), and a variety of fish and seafood (lobster, red snapper, grouper, barracuda, conch fritters, or shrimps).

The restaurants you’ll find in the port area include the Wet Lizard, Baymen’s Tavern, Martha’s Cafe, and a few more bars and grills. Bird’s Isle Restaurant, located a 5-minute drive from the port, features amazing food and great sea views.

San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker also offer a variety of great restaurants and food options. Top off your day with local Belikin beer, fresh exotic fruits and desserts like Rum Fruit Cake, Milk Cake, Coconut Tart, and Sweet Potato Pudding.

How To Do A Self-Guided Cruise Excursion To Caye Caulker, Belize

cruise excursions in belize city,self-guided cruise excursion caye caulker

As I prepped for my first cruise last fall, I struggled to find excursions that were up my alley.  But after a lot of research around Belize City excursions specifically, I finally decided to tackle a self-guided cruise excursion to Caye Caulker so I could show my mom the little island I’d visited just a few months prior.

There are a lot of reasons this is a bad idea, but it’s definitely not impossible, and since I couldn’t find a ton of good information while doing research myself, I wanted to provide a really detailed guide for other people trying this in the future.

self-guided cruise excursion to Caye Caulker - a how-to

Make sure you check out this ultimate packing list for a beach or pool vacay!

If you have any interest in the jungle, ruins, ziplining, caving, and such, taking a cruise-led or private excursion into the jungle could make a lot of sense.  I have trouble imagining how they could get you out to Hol Chan for snorkeling, but if a company is able to then do it—some of the best snorkeling in the world.

I also tried to get a charter flight out to the Great Blue Hole, but was visiting on the wrong day to make that happen.  I would also say that Belize City port day is a great one to have a deserted pool on the cruise ship all to yourself.

My Honest Review of Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas

BUT, if you decide you want to try a self-guided excursion to Caye Caulker, this article is for you.  It cannot be stated with enough emphasis—Belize City is a tough port to do self-guided excursions from, period.  But particularly out to Caye Caulker (and I wouldn’t even consider Ambergris Caye, just too far).

It can totally be done (I did it), but it’s really important to know that this comes with inherent risks.  I am a very confident traveler and had also visited Caye Caulker myself just a few months prior, so was already familiar with the water taxi companies, where to go on the island, and other details that helped make it more seamless.  And you will probably only have about 2.5 hours on Caye Caulker once you’re there.

self-guided cruise excursion belize city to caye caulker

Make sure you’re protected—here are 9 sunscreens I swear by for travel!

Considerations for self-guided cruise excursions to Caye Caulker

#1:  Belize City is a tender port.   That makes cruise excursions automatically more challenging because the cruise ships can’t come directly in and dock in the harbor.  That means you have to be assigned to a boat (tender) that will ferry you from the cruise ship to the port.  This adds anywhere from 20-45 minutes each way, plus whatever time you sit on the tender or in line waiting for everyone to board the tender.  This is something you just can’t control, and adds significant time and margin for error.

#2:   There is sometimes a time difference between the cruise ship and the mainland of Belize .  Belize is on Central time and does not participate in Daylight Savings.  And depending on where your cruise ship leaves from, that may mean your ship is on a different time zone.  You just need to be super sure you understand the time zone math to get back to the boat on time—my recommendation is to have a clock somewhere that is always showing you “ship time”.  This is something you *can* control, but need to be aware of.

#3:   Belize City itself is super sketchy and can be fairly dangerous and I would not recommend trying to navigate it yourself.  I heard people saying “we’ll just go into Belize City and walk around”.  I’d say…DON’T.  When I was visiting the first time, I even heard super experienced backpackers say that they got the hell out of Belize City as fast as they could.  My taxi driver also told me not to stay in the city.

#4:  Accidents happen.   There is always the chance of a water taxi breakdown between Caye Caulker and Belize City.  It’s not like it happens every day, but it does happen, and this could accidentally strand you out on the water (or waiting for a taxi) and delay you catching your cruise ship.  Make sure you have travel insurance that would cover missing your cruise ship on a port day (or live dangerously…I did).

#5:   Just as a reminder (as I mentioned in my “ reasons you might not enjoy CC “), Caye Caulker doesn’t really have any beaches .  So if laying at the beach is your desire, this is not the place for you.

Water Taxi Schedules

There are two companies that run water taxis over to Caye Caulker.  One is more frequent than the other, and is what I’ve taken on both of my trips.  It is San Pedro Belize Express , and runs about every hour or hour and a half depending on time of day.  You can check the schedule at the link above, and it costs $28 USD for a round trip.

The other is Ocean Ferry Belize , and they run about every hour and a half to three hours, depending.  It’s kind of an odd schedule, though does hit some off times from the first company so could give you options.

Getting from the port to the water taxi

Thankfully, the water taxi is literally around the corner from the cruise port.  When you get off the ship, go straight to the end of the cruise pier (the water should be on your left as you’re walking) and out the cruise port gate and take a left, and you’re almost immediately at the water taxi pier (on your left).  It’s very easy, like literally next door.

Walk purposefully, like you know where you’re going.  Always make sure you’re aware of your purse or pockets.  Petty theft would be the most likely scenario here, just like in any highly touristed area.  Be prepared to have people trying to offer you tours, taxis, everything under the sun as you’re walking.

Once you get to the water taxi pier, you’ll be rushed by various people wanting you to get a regular (car) taxi or to take your bags.  It will probably be overwhelming, you just need to be prepared.  Since you’re coming from the cruise ship you don’t have any bags, so just wave them off and go directly to the end of the pier.

On your right is the San Pedro Belize Express office, where you can buy your tickets.  You’ll probably want to shoot for either the 9:00am or the 10:30am water taxi, depending on your docking and tender times.  If you end up having time to kill, Annie’s Lunchbox is a great little place to grab a bite to eat!

What to do with ~2.5 hours on Caye Caulker

Okay, now you’ve made it…probably good to have a semi-game plan.  This post I did on Caye Caulker will help provide more info on where some of these places are and why they’re awesome.

#1 – Go slow.  Wander the streets.

One important caveat to #1 is that you may want to grab some cash from the ATM…but you also may be fine with just a credit card and U.S. dollars.  Your call.

But Caye Caulker is all about that “go slow” life.  Seriously, they’ll even shout it at you if they feel you’re walking too fast (which is really my MO in life).  Wander up the main drag and just enjoy the bright colors and sun.

#2 – Get an iced coffee & some cinnamon sugar donuts

Guys, I LURRRVVVVVE Ice ‘N’ Beans .  It is literally the best iced coffee I’ve ever had, and they customize the sweetening to your palate.  They also have these totally delish little cinnamon-sugar covered donuts that you have to get.

Honestly, everything here is good…the bubble waffles, the smoothies, whatever.  Make this your first stop.

#3 – Go snag a pic at The Split

If you get off the water taxi, take a right, and just walk up the main street, you will eventually hit The Split at the other end of the island.  It’s like…a 5-10 minute walk.  Remember, it’s a tiny island.  The main draw here is The Lazy Lizard bar, and the view.

If none of the cruise excursions from Belize City float your boat, you can consider a self-guided excursion to Caye Caulker.

If you wore your suit, feel free to jump in and cool off (with a drink, naturally)!

#4 – Grab a drink at the Sip ‘N’ Dip

Personally, I prefer the Sip ‘N’ Dip’s vibe to The Lazy Lizard’s, but both have their charms.  The Sip ‘N’ Dip is on your right, right before you hit The Split.

Grab a drink in the shade of the bar, or wander out onto the pier for some sun…or jump in the water and float on a tube that’s tethered to the pier.  Definitely chill.

#5 – Get some lunch at Maggie’s Sunset Kitchen or Wish Willy

Or go get a fry jack from Errolyn’s House of Fry Jacks (a traditional food here).  There are several good food options on the island, though they won’t be the ones you find super easily right by the water taxi.

I grabbed Maggie’s Sunset Kitchen this time, back on the corner of the island, and was super happy with it—I had missed it on my first trip and so was glad to give it a try.

#6 – See if the bakery is open (and maybe get another iced coffee…)

Sadly, it wasn’t the day we went on the cruise excursion, but I went by there every day to get a cinnamon roll when I had visited a few months prior.  Those cinnamon rolls are BOMB.  Also, go back to Ice ‘N’ Beans for another coffee.

There is a guy called Banana Bread Man who wanders up and down the main drag selling banana bread, and there’s Cake Lady who does the same with various desserts as well.  I wasn’t quite as into their wares (a bit sweet for my tastes), but it’s quite the local novelty and worth sampling 🙂

#7 – Wait for your water taxi with a drink at Bamboozle

This is one of the closest restaurants to the water taxi, so you can grab a seat (or a swing, if you prefer) and a drink to wait.  I somehow managed to accidentally order the exact same chocolate peanut butter milkshake with added booze as I had 6 months prior…which is weird and apparently I’m super consistent.

When you get back to the water taxi pier in Belize City, just re-trace your steps…walk back to the main road, hang a right, and you’ll see the cruise port terminal basically right there (on your right).

You’ll have to go through security, and then make sure you’ve remembered which terminal your tender is going out from.  Queue in line to get back on the boat (and look for folks with the same cruise ship card as you have).  Easy peasy.

Whew!  We accomplished a lot in a short period of time, and everything worked out well.  That wasn’t guaranteed, but we had a plan and that helped a lot.

It’s challenging to know what cruise excursions in Belize City will be best for you, but if you’re set on Caye Caulker then this should equip you for success.  Hopefully this has helped you in your planning, but please feel free to shoot me a note in the comments with any questions!

HI! I really wanted to the Nina’s Tiki Cruise to see some fish, sharks and Rays but they don’t start until 2pm Belize time. Do you know if once on Caye Caulker you can rent a boat for an hour to see some fish/sharks?

Hi Lisa! I don’t know for sure, the TripAdvisor forums could maybe help you. I’m not sure what fish or sharks you’d see right around the island, and also wonder if Ambergris Caye might be a good option for you? I hope you find something great!

Next time you’re there, I’ve had one of the best chickens I’ve ever had in Cay Caulker. We did an excursion but didn’t want to do the lunch there bc it was expensive burgers and I asked our guide what he’d recommend. He said to take the street to the left of where we were and I’d see Kareem barbecue. I thought it was a restaurant but it was just a guy with a smoker outside, but his jerk chicken was spectacular and had to go back for repeats. We still talk about it.

I’ve cruised on Carnival multiple times to Belize and have done the Water Taxi to Caye Caulker, it’s my favorite Caye for many reasons. Your review and detailed information is spot on from my experiences. The times I’ve been to Caye Caulker via water taxi, it was always a group of 3-4 women and other than being asked to buy things/cab ride offers, we had no issue walking to/from the water taxi location. I never felt fear or unease while walking around the Caye, and if you are in a pinch to get from one side of the island to the other, there’s usually a golf cart ‘taxi’ available to get you there quicker.

The ride to Caye Caulker is quite bumpy like others have mentioned, but otherwise it’s a rather easy/seamless way to do your own shore excursion. Keep your watch, phone, etc… on boat time and set an alarm or two so you get back to the Taxi location on time. I personally carry my passport “just in case” and second the insurance suggestion.

How much did the water shuttle cost?

March 5, 2024 at 7:31 pm

Hi Claire! I would definitely check the actual websites for the most up-to-date info, but I believe it should be $20-25 per person. It may depend on the company as well, there are two different ones that run the shuttles.

Hi! Thanks for this content. It was super helpful. I am definitely looking to simply hang out in the Caribbean Sea for a few hours. Would a self-guided tour to Caye Caulker be a good option for this? If not, what would be a great self-guided option for a day in the water while my cruise ship is in Belize? TIA!!!!!

December 2, 2023 at 8:18 am

Hi Racquel! If your goal is to just hang out in/on the sea, I don’t think that trying to do a Caye Caulker self-guided tour is worth the risk and time…instead, I’d look into some kind of boating excursion, such as to the Hol Chan reef, or possibly something to Ambergris Caye? The beaches in this part of Belize aren’t very good but the water is amazing, so my recommendation would be to get out on the water and enjoy!

We found that it was a bumpy 50 minute boat ride from the cruise port in Belize City out to Caye Caulker. I agree, there are no real beaches and the tour guide told us you had to go “way out” to see anything while snorkeling. What areas there were to sit and look at the ocean, only had wooden (many broken down) wooden Adirondack chairs. We saw someone drown by the “Split”, and the medical help (a modified golf cart with a stretcher) took over 25 minutes to arrive and by then it was too late.

The Caye is picturesque, but not worth the long ride to get there.

January 16, 2024 at 7:38 pm

Hi Lou! Yes, I’d generally agree. It’s an interesting experience and pretty place, but on a cruise excursion it can be pretty risky–it’s an option but most cruisers will have more/better ones!

Hey there!! My husband and I will be in Belize on September 20th, with Carnival. We are wanting to go to Caye Caulker, but I’m a nervous wreck, I don’t want to be one of those dock runners lol. Is the hassle worth going? I don’t know what else we’d do if we don’t go, it definitely looks like our kind of place.

September 6, 2023 at 3:17 pm

Hi Karly! It definitely is a gamble. I mean…it’s really hard to say whether it’s worth it. It’s a cute little island (emphasis on “little”, there’s not much to actually DO). You could do an excursion to ruins or maybe a flight to the Blue Hole, or a snorkeling excursion? But I know what you mean, I”m not a big fan of the cruise excursions from that port. It just really depends on how much time you have and there’s always the chance that a ferry back has an issue. I’d definitely look up alternative times. I hope you guys have a great time, whatever you decide!

We are on a Carnival cruise in December and wanting to go straight to Caye Caulker. We have been there many times for extended stays but never from a Carnival cruise to the water taxi. How would we get there from the Carnival port and would it be walkable with children?

November 3, 2023 at 8:28 am

Hi Kim! All cruise ships use the same port in Belize City (it’s a “tender port”, meaning they have to dock offshore and everyone ferries you to the port/pier in smaller boats). So the instructions I provided in the article would be the same. I can’t tell you exactly what berth your tender will arrive at for Carnival (my guess is it varies, regardless), but you should be able to get out of the port walking and over to the water ferry using the same directions. It’s a short distance so should be walkable with children without issue (just a bit crazy and right on the road, so keep a tight grasp on them). Hope that helps!

It takes 30-45 minutes (barring any mechanical issues, which I didn’t experience, but are always a possibility).

Hi Jessica, I’m doing a cruise in February and I’m debating on whether I should do a snorkeling excursion or a self guided tour to Caye Caulker. If I decide to go to Caye Caulker, can you snorkel off the shoreline? And if I decide to do a snorkeling excursion, do you have to be a strong swimmer? I have kids, I just want to make sure they are safe.

May 18, 2019 at 11:44 am

Hi Lil! No, you can’t just do any snorkeling off the shoreline in Caye Caulker…there really isn’t any beach or nice snorkeling right there. You need to take a boat out to the nice snorkeling. In this case I’d strongly recommend doing the snorkeling excursion. Snorkeling in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve off the coast of Belize is absolutely AMAZING, some of the best in the world! I’d say you’d want to be an adequate swimmer, but not expert. The individual excursion companies should tell you whether you need to be a strong swimmer on their sites, and there were kids on the sailing/snorkeling excursion I did (I have a separate post about that on the site). The snorkeling excursion is definitely the safer bet in terms of getting back to the boat too, and is something your kids should love! I think they might be a bit bored with Caye Caulker, as there isn’t a ton to do. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Belize City – Belize

Last updated on September 16th, 2023 at 08:10 am

Welcome to Belize City, home of the Belize Cruise Port. Immerse yourself in the rich blend of Mayan, Creole, and Garifuna cultures. Explore the ancient ruins of Altun Ha or Xunantunich, go snorkeling or diving in the famous Belize Barrier Reef, or take a boat tour through the lush mangroves of the Belize River. Sample traditional Belizean cuisine and experience the warmth of the local people.

Belizean Dollar, but the US Dollar is widely accepted, just make sure you get American back in change. ATMs are available at the port.

Wireless Internet:

Widely available throughout Tourism Village

Where You Dock in Belize City – Belize

The Belize cruise port itself, called “Tourism Village” is quite small, with souvenir shops and Diamonds International and restaurants offering cheap drinks and Caribbean specialties. There is a high guarded fence around Tourism Village which they don’t recommend tourists venture outside of by themselves.

Getting Around Belize City – Belize

Taxis – are easy to come by at Tourism Village. Look for the green licence plates as these are the licensed taxis. Agree on a fare before getting in the taxi as they are not metered.

Water Taxis – these leave from the Marine Terminal and travel to islands such as Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye. Make sure you leave enough time to get back to the dock in order to catch a tender back to your ship. It takes about an hour and a half to reach San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and 45 minutes to Caye Caulker.

Flights – Tropic Air and Maya Island Air offer flights from Belize City to Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. The flight to Caye Caulker takes less than 10 minutes and only 20 to Ambergris Caye but will run around $75 per person, one way to either location. Be aware that the planes are very small – 5 people – but the views are amazing.

Shopping In Belize City – Belize

At Belize Cruise Port, you’ll find the typical cruise port shopping destinations. Diamonds International, Del-Sol,  and Piranha Joe, within Tourism Village. Look for the souvenir shops offering hand-made goods such as mahogany or rosewood carvings, or baskets. Note: don’t buy items that are made from sea turtle shells, Triton’s trumpet shells or black coral.

Moho Chocolate & Cafe – stop here for some wonderful local chocolate, made in small batches. They also offer specialty hot beverages and a couple of small tables. Watch them roast the cacao beans on their front porch.

Pharmacy Express – the hot-spot for inexpensive over-the-counter medication

National Handicrafts Sales Center (2 South Park Street near Tourism Village) – artwork and crafts

Dining In Belize City – Belize

There are a few restaurants located within Tourism Village such as the Bearded Clam, or the Grill at the far end of the village or the Wet Lizard. Try Belikin, the local beer.

If you want to try some local cuisine outside of the port gates:

The Smoky Mermaid -(The Great House, 13 Cork St) great seafood with a Caribbean twist. Everything on their lunch menu is under $10 USD.

Bird’s Isle – just a short walk from the port, this restaurant gets great reviews for its authentic Belizean cuisine at great prices and with wonderful ocean views

Terry’s Caribbean Grill – Caye Caulker, on the beach by The Split – where the locals eat! Great grilled seafood and Caribbean cuisine

Things To Do in Belize City – Belize

Visit ambergris caye.

Ambergris Caye is the largest and most popular destination in Belize and is a great jumping-off point for some fabulous snorkeling on the famed Belize Barrier Reef.

San Pedro is the main town on Ambergris Caye and is easily walkable (only 3 streets wide), or golf cart or bicycle rentals are readily available. Enjoy the laid-back island feel at one of the many great restaurants or enjoy some shopping.

Another option for Ambergris Caye is to get a day pass to one of the many first-class resorts. You’ll have access to the beach, pools, restaurants and other resort amenities all for one great price. Check out the options with ResortPass!

Getting there by plane: The municipal airport is a 10 minute taxi ride from the port in Belize City and the flight to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye is only 20 minutes. Check Tropic Air for pricing.

Getting there by ferry:  There are two ferry companies – Caribbean Sprinter and San Pedro Express that go between Belize City and San Pedro and the ferry docks are a short 2 minute walk from the pier. It’s considerably cheaper to take the ferry instead of flying, but the ferry ride is about a hour and a half.

Overview of the Cruise Port of Belize

The Cruise Port of Belize, officially known as the Fort Street Tourism Village, is the main gateway for cruise ship passengers visiting Belize. It is located in Belize City, the country’s largest urban center and former capital.

The port is designed to provide a seamless and enjoyable experience for cruise ship travelers. Upon arrival, you will find a well-organized and secure facility with a variety of amenities, including duty-free shops, restaurants, and tour operators.

The Belize Cruise Port is strategically positioned to allow easy access to some of the country’s most popular attractions. From the port, you can embark on excursions to the stunning Belize Barrier Reef, explore ancient Mayan ruins, go cave tubing in underground rivers, or simply relax on beautiful sandy beaches.

The port is also conveniently located near Belize City, where you can discover the local culture, visit museums and art galleries, or indulge in delicious Belizean cuisine.

The Cruise Port of Belize operates as a tender port, meaning that cruise ships anchor offshore and passengers are ferried to the port using smaller boats. The tender ride provides a unique opportunity to see the coastal beauty of Belize.

Once you arrive at the port, you have several options for how to spend your time. You can either explore Belize City on your own, participate in a shore excursion organized by your cruise line, or book tours with local operators.

The port offers a wide range of services and facilities to ensure a comfortable visit. These include restrooms, currency exchange, Wi-Fi access, and friendly staff who are ready to assist and provide information about the available activities and attractions.

It’s important to note that Belize is a tender port, so it’s essential to plan your time accordingly. Make sure to allow enough time for tendering back to the ship and consider the departure schedule to avoid any inconvenience.

Overall, the Cruise Port of Belize provides a convenient and exciting platform for cruise ship passengers to explore the beauty and culture of Belize. With its prime location and numerous amenities, it sets the stage for an unforgettable adventure in this tropical paradise.

Best Times to Visit Belize Cruise Port

The Belize Cruise Port is a year-round destination, but choosing the best time to visit can greatly enhance your experience. Considerations such as weather, crowd levels, and specific activities can help you determine when to plan your visit to make the most of your time in Belize.

The peak tourist season in Belize runs from November to April when the weather is at its best. During these months, you can expect dry and sunny days, making it ideal for outdoor activities like snorkeling, diving, and exploring Mayan ruins. However, this is also the busiest time, with larger crowds and higher hotel rates.

If you prefer a quieter and more budget-friendly experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons. May through June and September through October offer a balance between good weather and fewer tourists. You might encounter occasional rain showers, but they are usually short-lived and shouldn’t dampen your spirits.

The rainy season in Belize falls between June and November, with September and October being the wettest months. While this period sees more rainfall and increased humidity, it also offers unique advantages. The landscape is lush and vibrant, and the rainforests come alive with wildlife and cascading waterfalls.

One factor to keep in mind when planning your visit is that Belize is located in the Caribbean hurricane belt. The official hurricane season runs from June to November, with the highest risk in September and October. However, it’s worth noting that hurricanes are rare in Belize, and cruise lines closely monitor weather conditions to ensure the safety of passengers.

Ultimately, the best time to visit the Belize Cruise Port depends on your personal preferences and priorities. If you’re seeking sunny days and bustling tourist activities, the peak season is your best bet. For a more relaxed experience with smaller crowds, consider the shoulder seasons. And if you don’t mind the occasional rain and want to witness the lush beauty of Belize, the rainy season can be a great choice.

Regardless of when you visit, Belize offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere and a wide array of activities to suit any traveler. From exploring ancient ruins to lounging on pristine beaches, your time at the Belize Cruise Port is sure to be filled with unforgettable experiences.

Belize City Cruise Port: Tips, Attractions, Weather

The Belize City cruise port is a popular western Caribbean cruise destination, but the surrounding countryside has much more to offer.

Passengers will arrive at the cruise terminal and the Belize City Cruise Village, which offers the most convenient shopping and dining.

The rest of the city offers cultural centers, historical centers and colonial architecture along with the usual shopping, bars, nightlife and restaurants. Cultural and historical attractions in the city include the House of Culture, Museum of Belize and St. John’s Cathedral.

But even more appealing is the wealth of archaeological and ecotourism attractions found nearby in other parts of the country. They include cave tubing along an underground river, one of the best and most unique shore excursions in the Caribbean.

One of the best things about Belize is its small size, which makes it easy to visit many of nation’s attractions. They include sites that can be done as day trips from Belize City.

Quick Travel Tips

Where is belize city.

Belize City is 224 miles south of Cozumel and 136 miles northwest of Roatan along the Central American coast of the Caribbean Sea. Its location makes it a common port of call on western Caribbean cruises, especially ones that last seven days or longer.

Attractions and Shore Excursions

Mayan ruins of altun ha.

Ruins of the Mayan civilization are found throughout Belize with one major site only 30 miles north of Belize City. Known as “Altun Ha”, these are the closest and most accessible Mayan temple-pyramids to Belize City.

Nevertheless, most folks visit Altun Ha on a day tour because reaching the site with public transportation involves a two mile hike through hot and humid jungle lasting about 30 to 45 minutes. Cruise line prices start at about $90 to $100 per person with discounts for children.

Quick tours to Altun Ha are done by bus. Folks who want to make a day of it should go for one of the tours that begins with a three-hour boat ride up the Belize River. It is followed by lunch on the riverbank and a bus ride to the ruins.

Those who fantasize about being Indiana Jones can also hire a local guide to lead them on a long, hot walk to the site via jungle trails.

Farther out and more impressive Mayan ruins that are available as shore excursions include Lamana and Xunantunich. Their prices start at more than $100 per person.

Belize River Boat Tours

The Belize River runs through Belize City and acts a conduit to the country’s north-central interior.

During colonial times, British lumber operations used this waterway to transport valuable mahogany from the rainforests of the interior.

Some centuries before the British showed up, the Mayans used the Belize River to link their cities with the Caribbean Sea.

At present times, it’s mostly used for more light-hearted purposes such as transportation to and from eco-lodges and for boat tours in search of Belize wildlife.

A boat tour on the river makes for an excellent, exciting break from the hustle and bustle of Belize City. Tours are typically half day excursions although guides don’t complain when visitors to Belize City opt for a full day of adventure on the river.

Some of the more frequently encountered animals are stately herons, egrets, and storks, prehistoric looking crocodiles, iguanas, and Black Howler Monkeys that sit in the branches of riverside trees.

Cave Tubing and Jungle Exploration

Adventurous visitors to Belize City won’t want to miss a tour that begins with a hike or an ATV ride along jungle trails in the Sibun Caves Branch Archaeological Park .

It includes a bit of Mayan cave exploration and a short guided walk through the Belize rainforest.

At the end of the trip, visitors will jump into an inner tube and float through an underground river that had been the site of Mayan religious rituals.

They wear headlamps to see their way down the slow-moving river as a guide explains the both the Mayan past and the cave’s natural history.

It’s a lot for one day, but hundreds of visitors to Belize City opt for this exciting tour. We did as a family, and it remains one of our favorite shore excursions in the Caribbean.

Note that the Belize Zoo lies along the same route and takes about 45 minutes to reach from Belize City cruise port. Cave tubing is a five- to six-hour trip and usually costs $75 to $100 per person with discounts for young children.

Community Baboon Sanctuary

Black Howler Monkeys in Belize (where they are known as “baboons”) have become endangered due to deforestation in their already small range.

Fortunately, there are conservation efforts to ensure the future of these unique primates, the most important of which is the Community Baboon Sanctuary.

A day trip to the visitor center for this site is an excellent way to learn about and see these rare monkeys up close and personal and is also a good way to meet the friendly folks of rural Belize.

The sanctuary is located about 50 minutes west of the Belize City cruise port.

The Blue Hole

Belize city map.

This attraction appeals almost entirely to scuba divers. The Blue Hole is a collapsed cave off the coast of the country that is 407 feet deep and 1,050 feet wide, according to the Belize Tourism Board .

The site, which is part of the Lighthouse Reef Atoll, is known as one of the best dive sites in the world because of its depth, hammerhead sharks and stalactite formations.

It is about 43 miles east of the cruise port. Divers will more likely have to go on their own.

Beaches Near the Cruise Port

Belize is not a beach destination because most of the shoreline consists of mangrove forests. Cruise lines offer few to no excursions that go to any beaches because the few that exist are mostly small or too far away.

There is one small man made beach about two miles west of the cruise terminal at Old Belize.

Otherwise, cruise visitors should plan on visiting beaches at other Caribbean ports. Belize is the place for rainforests, Mayan temples and cave tubing—not for beaches.

Shopping / Restaurants

Belize City is not known for its tourist shopping and restaurant district like other Caribbean destinations. It is better known as the starting point for excursions into the interior.

It does have two well-known shopping centers at the Fort Street Tourism Village and the nearby Belizean Handicraft Market Place, 2 South Park Street. Fort Street has about 30 gift shops; the Market Place emphasizes local arts and crafts.

Note that cruise lines offer very few city or shopping tours for Belize City.

Belize City has a brief dry season from February through April when the average rainfall is about two inches per month.

Average high temperatures are in the low 80s Fahrenheit in February and increase to the upper 80s by April. It’s the best time to visit by cruise.

The rainy season hits hard starting in June and continues through December. The average rainfall increases to more than 10 inches a month during the fall. Average high temperatures stay in the upper 80s Fahrenheit.

January is a transition month between the dry and rainy seasons with an average rainfall of about five to six inches.

Hike to the top for incredible 360-degree views of its verdant surroundings.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

One of Belize’s most popular diving and snorkeling sites is the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, a three-square-mile marine haven found off the shore of Ambergris Caye. Hol Chan means “little channel” in Mayan, and it’s the perfect description of this coral-lined underwater alley home to hundreds of species of fish, including seahorses, parrotfish, and moray eels. One of the main attractions at Hol Chan Marine Reserve is Shark Ray Alley, a shallow area where large numbers of southern stingrays and nurse sharks frequently gather.

After the Mayans were driven out of their land by the Spanish Conquest, the British usurped the country in the mid-17th century and named it British Honduras. The country’s name was officially changed to Belize in 1973, and it remained a British colony until 1981 when it finally achieved its independence.

?

It's the Belize you won't believe! After meeting your guide for this Belize excursion, you will be driven to the nearby airport where you will board a Cessna Caravan (12 to 14 seats) for your scenic 20-minute flight. During this Belize tour at 1500 feet, and with windows under the wing, you will be able to see the many islands that dot the world's second-largest barrier reef system.

Upon arrival in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, you will have approximately 4.5 hours of free time on your own to shop for local gifts, sample the local cuisine, relax on the beach or explore and see why many describe it as the Caribbean of 30 years ago.

Ambergris Caye (pronounced Am-BUR-gris or Am-BUR-grease Key) is the largest of more than 200 cays along the coast of Belize. The island is 25 miles long and a little over one mile from side to side at its widest point. Its history included Maya, European Pirates, and Mexican Refugees who fled during the Caste War. Their descendants make up most of the island's population today. Once dependent on the coconut, then fishing industries, the islands major source of income these days is tourism.

San Pedro Town, the only inhabited area on the island, is a small bustling village complete with colorfully painted wooden houses of Mexican and Caribbean decor. They are now home to gift shops, boutiques, bars, cafes, and restaurants. A short walk in town (which is only three streets deep) and you can feel the friendliness of the people and see the ease of their lifestyle as no shoes, tee-shirts, and shorts are the typical island dress code. The people of the island speak English, Spanish, Creole, and Maya all at the same time, making it their own island dialect. Most transportation is by foot, bike or golf cart.

San Pedro's restaurants range from seafood to burritos; from Italian to Chinese, but when in Belize, try the local cuisine (fish, barbecue, rice, and beans, etc.).

There are no shopping malls here. You will find quaint little gift shops and street-side vendors offering tropical apparel as well as the work of local artisans. These include local paintings, pottery, sculptures, handmade dolls, hats, baskets, beach chairs and hammocks.

All too soon, it is time to return to the airport for your flight back to Belize City.

Please Note: This Belize tour includes transportation to Ambergris Caye only. This is a self-guided tour. You will not be provided with transportation into the town of San Pedro. To place an order for this tour, we need the first and last name of EVERY guest, as it appears on the picture ID they will need to present at the airport. Your order will be refused if we do not receive ALL names at the time of booking.
