Flora In Jhalana Leopard Reserve – narrow valleys of the Aravallis and sharp cliffs of hills dominate the landscape of Jhalana Leopard Reserve. The captivating natural surroundings of the forest of Jhalana and the tranquility here are extremely relaxing and a delight for the mind. The presence of such great wildlife in the urban region makes this land a different and unique site for nature enthusiasts. Jhalana is a dry deciduous forest. The forest remains dry most of the time of the year as trees shed their leaves in the dry season and lush emeralds during the monsoons. The Jhalana forest is dominated by plants like juliflora (Prosopis juliflora) and khejri (Prosopis cineraria). The rapidly growing juliflora was initially planted to provide firewood for local villagers. However, trees do not support the growth of other grasslands and trees. 2. Jhalana Leopard Safari Park – Jaipur, Rajasthan

Located beside the urban sprawl of Jaipur, Jhalana is famous for the spotting of leopards not only inside the park but outside as well. The locals often encounter the spotted beasts in the night on road and they even come very close to the human settlements sometimes. Still, there hasn’t been a single incident of an attack on humans recorded here which makes it obvious that this is a safe place to watch leopards and the probability of seeing them is also higher than you can imagine. 4. Satpura National Park – Madhya Pradesh

Also known as Satpura Tiger Reserve, this park is located in the Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh and derives its name from the Satpura range of hills. The park spans an area of 524 km2 (202 sq mi) and becomes a central Indian highland ecosystem with Bori and Pachmarhi wildlife sanctuaries beside it. It attracts a large number of tourists every year with dense forests, ravines, narrow gorges, and sandstone peaks as well.

It also comprises many high altitude points and the highest of them is Dhoopgarh peak that is 1,350 meters (4,430 ft) in height. From the capital of the state, Bhopal, it is just 210 kilometers away which makes it one of the prime destinations for those who come to visit the city and the main attractions of the state. Satpura is popular for its richness in biodiversity and provides habitat to species such as Indian giant squirrel, mouse deer, flying squirrel, porcupine, fox, blackbuck, wild boar, chinkara, antelope, four-horned antelope, nilgai, Indian muntjac, chital, sambar, and leopards of course. It is also rich in flora with trees like bamboo, bel, mahua, Emblica, Phyllanthus, tendu, teak, sal, and various other medicinal plants.

5. Bandipur National Park – Karnataka

Established in 1974 under the Project Tiger, this national park is situated in Karnataka that happens to have the second-highest population of tiger in India. The Amagarh Leopard Reserve or Amagarh Safari Park is India’s second Leopard Reserve located near Galta Ji (An Hindu pilgrimage spot) in Jaipur city of Rajasthan state, India. It is surrounded by the oldest mountain range in India the Aravalli Range, Amagarh became a leopard reserve in 2020. The reserve is spread over an area of an area of1,524 hectares, with immense flora and fauna present in the park.

The Amagarh Leopard Conservation Reserve presently has a healthy population of 16 – 20 Leopards, other than leopards there are other carnivorous & herbivorous species you can spot.

Such as Indian civets, jungle cats, striped hyenas, desert cats, desert foxes, jackals, porcupines, jungle rats, monitor lizards, mongooses, spotted deer (chital), Blue Bull (Nilgai) Sambar deer,  and a variety of snakes.

Safari in Amagarh came into operation for visitors on 22nd May 2022, after the inauguration of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. Amagarh safari park is the best place to sight a leopard with a good and healthy population of leopards.

Leopards   are solitary yet spectacular, cunning, and opportunistic hunters belonging to the big cat family. These fascinating creatures, known for their unique characteristics, reside in the wild habitats of India, which are considered among the best places for leopards in India . Although they remain unmatched in size compared to other big cats, leopards appear splendid against the backdrop of these diverse landscapes.

Leopards are commonly referred to by the names Bagheera and Tendua in India’s local language. They are also called Guldaar (flower holder) due to the beautiful rose-patterned spots or rosettes found on their coat. 

Leopards adjust to any habitat easily. As India has dense forests rich with flora and fauna, it becomes an ideal dwelling for this animal. They are the only species from the big cat family that can be seen climbing and sitting atop trees. This and many other behavioral and physical traits of leopards make this animal interesting.

Their stealthy habits make them the deadliest predators. Recent cases also report that leopards enter human settlements and attack domestic cattle. 

According to national estimations, approximately more than 12,000 leopards are thriving in India. They are distributed throughout the country, including states like Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh.

Although tiger safaris are popular among people, leopard safaris are not far behind. Watching a leopard in its natural habitat is a sight that can be astounding.

Here are some of the top places you should visit to see leopards in India:

1. Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary 

Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Karnataka and is known to be one of the finest sanctuaries in the state. Leopards are the main wild animals for tourism in this sanctuary and can be spotted easily. There are around 100 leopards found in the Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary.

Alongside leopards, you can also witness the extraordinary and rare black panthers. They go by the names Ghost of Kabini and Phantom of the Forest in the park.

Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary is part of Nagarhole National Park, and Indian leopards flourish at an equal density as tigers.  

At Kabini, you can also witness Bengal tigers, Indian bison, barking deer, mugger crocodiles, and various other bird species. 

2. Bandipur National Park, Karnataka 

Bandipur National Park  situated in Karnataka, was also one of the hunting grounds for the Maharajas, or kings. Today, it protects numerous endangered species in India.  

Bandipur National Park is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and shares its boundaries with Mudumalai National Park in Tamil Nadu, Nagarhole National Park in Karnataka, and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala.

The national park has a deciduous forest and is located at the intersection of the Deccan Plateau and the Western Ghats. This becomes a natural habitat for the leopards, which are spotted frequently. 

Other than leopards, jackals, dholes, Indian rock pythons, sloth bears, wild dogs, four-horned antelope, and a sizable population of tigers can also be seen. The picturesque surroundings of the Western Ghat Mountains make your safaris rewarding in Bandipur. 

3. Satpura National Park, Madhya Pradesh 

Satpura National Park , also known as Satpura Tiger Reserve, is located in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. This national park gets its name from the Satpura range of hills. It serves as a great opportunity to spot leopards distributed around the park. 

With its dense forests, narrow gorges, sandstone peaks, and ravines, the national park attracts a large number of tourists every year. 

Although it is aptly named a tiger reserve, the park is more often visited to witness leopards. In recent years, the leopard population has increased in Satpura, making the sightings quite frequent.

4. Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh 

The beautiful Pench National Park in Madhya Pradesh is situated in a flourishing teak jungle. This national reserve offers a secluded and quiet game-viewing experience in Central India.

The national park takes its name from the Pench River, which traverses through the park. The reserve is surrounded by an incredible landscape of hills, valleys, and forests. The dry deciduous forest of Pench shapes a range of exotic wildlife in India.

During a safari game drive through Pench National Park, you can catch glimpses of leopards resting atop trees or strolling through the forest. A recent sighting of a melanistic leopard was also reported in Pench, where the black leopard was seen in the Telia buffer zone of the park.

In Pench, you can also encounter elusive Bengal tigers, Indian wolves, striped hyenas, jackals, Asiatic wild dogs, and many other wildlife species.

5. Jhalana Leopard Safari Park, Rajasthan 

Jhalana  is situated beside the urban Jaipur city and is famous for its large leopard population. Not only can you spot leopards inside the park but outside as well. Jhalana’s reserve forest has been developed into India’s leading leopard park for a better experience. 

The park is regarded for its diverse flora and fauna spread across the deserts, plains, rivers, valleys, mountains, tropical rainforests, and the Himalayan foothills.  

Locals near Jlhalana have often reported sightings of leopards on the road at night, where they even come close to a human colony. Yet, there haven’t been any incidents involving animals attacking humans.

Jhalana Leopard Safari Park is a safe place to see leopards, which increases the probability of spotting them even higher. In the sanctuary, several big cat species, along with jackals, striped hyenas, Indian wolves, sloth bears, nilgai (Asian antelope), migratory birds, and various other species, can be seen. 

A special feature of this park is that it is located at a convenient distance from the city of Jaipur. You don’t have to spend hours travelling, as a quick visit to Jhalana can be done in a few hours.

Welcome to Leopard Country

It’s 8.30am on a Sunday morning early in December. A large, male leopard stares nonchalantly from his rocky outpost as the Ahmedabad passenger express train trundles past on the railway line below.

This is leopard country. In the heart of central Rajasthan, in the beautiful Aravalli hills dotted between Udaipur and Jodhpur, I’ve come to the best place in the world to see Leopards (in the wild).

This is the new relationship paradigm between humans and leopards. Leopards are known for their adaptability and ability to survive in even the most urban of environments in India’s mega-cities , but here, at Jawai at least they have been afforded hard-fought for protection.

I’d come to Jawai to stay at Bera Safari Lodge and meet its owner, Shatrunjay Pratap Singh, who has been the driving force behind Leopard conservation in Jawai for over the last decade.

The Leopard Cause

When you think of big-cat conservation in India, Project Tiger probably springs to mind. Efforts in India – and in Madhya Pradesh (Central India) particularly – to increase the populations of Bengal Tigers have seen a lot of success. But the Leopard, to a large extent, has not received the same attention.

In India, as people and development have spread, the Leopard has become a success story at adapting to its human surroundings, but it’s not without its problems. Given the relative prevalence of the Leopard in (semi) urban areas, it has not been awarded the same prestigious status as its larger, striped brother.

Safeguarding land to retain as protected habitat for Leopards has been even more of a struggle than it has been for the tiger. Statistics report that for every single tiger death in India, there are six leopard deaths, making this beautiful cat highly vulnerable and in need of more protection.

The difference is that a Leopard’s death does not make headlines, a tiger’s does.

In central Rajasthan, the desert scrub and rocky outcrops of Jawai make for the perfect leopard territory, but even that has had to be clawed back from the jaws of industry.

The owners of Bera Safari Lodge have been leading the fight against mining in Jawai for over a decade. As a direct result of their work with the local Panchayyat (village assembly) and government at different levels, the forests of Jawai Bandh were awarded the status of conservation reserve in 2013, and mining was banned in 2015.

The threat of mining remains, as profit hungry companies continue to eye the area for its rich quarry, and so the fight to keep the miners out and the leopards protected is endless.

But since the mining ban, Bera is the only area of Rajasthan to have seen a significant recovery in leopard population.

Jawai Leopard Safari Trips

A highlight of any trip to Rajasthan should be a visit to Bera Safari Lodge and the chance to go on their Jawai leopard safaris. Similar to safaris in India’s national parks, the lodge offers 2 safaris per day: Morning and Sunset.

Your chances of seeing a leopard while on safari here are the highest of anywhere in the world, thanks to the recovering leopard population here. Thanks to the rocky terrain, safaris can be done in a way that are not intrusive to the leopards, either, as the leopards have plenty of space to retreat to on the rocks, where the safari gypsy’s (jeeps) don’t go.

Leopards are nocturnal creatures, hunting between dusk and dawn, with the best time to see them being when they are leaving their caves in the evening around sunset, or coming back to them in the early morning.

I was lucky enough to see Leopards on both my morning and evening safaris, but there is an undeniable magic to heading out in the morning darkness, in the brisk air of winter just as the light starts to creep in, with no idea what you’ll find. There are also far fewer jeeps out in the morning, meaning you get the best of the leopard sightings pretty much to yourself.

The best way to go organise a Jawai leopard safari is through your lodge in Bera. There are also operators who offer just evening safaris if you are not staying in the area, but these give you much less of the full Leopard safari experience, and I recommend staying in the area at a lodge instead for 1-2 nights and doing a leopard safari that way.

Food at the lodge is delicious and all home cooked with the use of local veggies grown by neighbouring farmers and eggs from chickens reared on site.

By Train : Falna Railway Station, which is around 30 kilometres from Bera, is the closest train station. From cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Jaipur, you may take a train to Falna Railway Station, where you can then take a taxi or a bus to get to Bera.

By Car/Taxi : To get to Bera, hire a car or a cab from one of the nearby cities, such as Udaipur, Jodhpur, or Jaipur. The town is conveniently accessible by road as it is located on the Udaipur-Jodhpur highway.

3. Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary, Rajsamand district

The Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary, situated in the Rajsamand district of Rajasthan, is known for its diverse wildlife, including leopards. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 578 sq km and is surrounded by the Aravalli Hills. Visitors can take a leopard safari in open-top jeeps and witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Apart from leopards, this location features a lot of flora and animals that serves as a habitat for a wide range of species. It stretches through a significant area of the Aravalli range and also enters the Kathiawar-Gir dry deciduous forests ecoregion. Hyena, golden jackal, sloth bear, Indian wolf, jungle cat, chausingha, nilgai, sambhar, Indian hare, and chinkara can all be seen in this area in addition to the leopard. White-breasted kingfishers, doves, bulbuls, grey pigeons, golden orioles, parakeets, red spurfowl, peacocks, and grey junglefowl can all be spotted in this region. In accordance with an order from the Supreme Court of India, this sanctuary has also been selected for the Asiatic Lion Reintroduction Project.

This region is a famous tourist attraction because of Kumbhalgarh fort and Ranakpur Jain temple. Because of the diverse terrain and greenery, this place is not only popular for leopard safari, but as well as for trekking, horse riding and cycling tours. The most popular jeep safari in the sanctuary is the 15-kilometer trip from Kumbhalgarh to Thandi Beri. If you’re lucky, you might encounter leopards, bears, and sambar during the 3.5 hours it takes to go to and from Thandi Beri. At one end of the sanctuary are the well-known Ranakpur Jain temples from the fifteenth century.

5. Jhalana Leopard Safari in Jaipur

 Jhalana Leopard Reserve is located in the heart of Jaipur city and is a must-visit destination for wildlife enthusiasts. The safari covers an area of 23 sq km and is home to a large number of leopards. Visitors can take a jeep safari or a walking tour to spot these elusive big cats.

Of course, the leopards are the main attraction of Jhalana leopard reserve, and their population has been growing recently. This elusive animal can be seen here preying on other animals both during the day and at night. Like many other wildlife sanctuaries in Rajasthan, this one is also home to a wide diversity of birds. You also have the opportunity to see a variety of other animal species, some of which may completely wow you with their characteristics and appearance. The places surrounding the human settlements are frequently where locals can see nilgai and various deers. Nevertheless, to see the leopards, you must take a safari and travel a bit further into the deep into the jungle.

With around 40 leopards living there, Jhalana is considered to be the most densely populated leopard reserve in the world, covering an area of 23 square kilometres. Almost two leopards per square kilometre can be found. Because of this, visitors can nearly always count on spoting at least one leopard, though the typical visitor will generally see more of them on a good day.

How to reach Jhalana Leopard Safari

By Air : The nearest airport is Jaipur International Airport, which is about 12 km away from the reserve. From there, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach the reserve.

By Train : Jaipur Junction railway station is the nearest railway station to Jhalana Leopard Reserve, located at a distance of around 10 km. You can hire a taxi or take a bus from the railway station to reach the reserve.

By Bus : Jaipur is well-connected to all major cities in Rajasthan by road. There are regular bus services available from the Jaipur bus stand to the reserve. You can also hire a private taxi or cab to reach the reserve.

Once you reach Jaipur, you can take a taxi or hire a car to reach Jhalana Leopard Reserve. The reserve is located near the Jawahar Circle area in Jaipur.

6. Ranthambore Tiger Reserve

Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, located in the Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan, is one of the largest and most popular national parks in India. The reserve covers an area of 1334 sq km and is known for its rich biodiversity and its diverse terrain of dry deciduous forests, grasslands, and rocky hills. Besides tigers, the reserve is also home to leopards, sloth bears, hyenas, and many other species.

The park is home to a significant population of tigers, making it one of the best places in India to spot these majestic big cats in the wild. The park is also known for its tiger conservation efforts and has been successful in increasing the tiger population over the years. Apart from tigers, Ranthambore Tiger Reserve is also known to have a population of leopards. Although leopards are not as commonly spotted as tigers in Ranthambore, there have been sightings of leopards in the park. Leopards are elusive and shy by nature, making spotting them a thrilling and rare experience.

Visitors to Ranthambore Tiger Reserve can go on safari drives, either in jeeps or canter (open safari vehicles), accompanied by trained naturalists and guides, to explore the park and have a chance to spot tigers, leopards, and other wildlife in their natural habitat. It’s important to follow park regulations and guidelines for wildlife viewing to ensure the safety of both visitors and the animals.

How to reach Ranthambore tiger reserve

Day 01 : Arrive Bangalore (Flight)

On arrival at Bangalore International Airport, you will be greeted by our representative who will assist you with your check in at the hotel. Once briefed regarding your black leopard tour, you will receive all the travel related documents. Overnight stay at the hotel in Bangalore.

Other mammals includes the gray langur (Presbytes entellus), bonnet macaque (Macaca radiata), jungle cat, slender loris (Loris tadigradus), leopard cat (Felis bengalensis), civet (Viverricula indica and Paradoxurus hermaphroditus), mongoose (Herpestes fuscus and Herpestes vitticollis), European otter (Lutra lutra), Indian giant flying squirrel (Petaurista petaurista), Indian giant squirrel (Ratufa indica), porcupine, golden jackal, chevrotain (Tragulus meminna), hare and pangolin (Manis crassicaudata). “It is Maharashtra’s oldest and largest national park. Tadoba is one of the most successful breeding grounds for tigers, with 135+ tigers in its landscape (core and buffer). “Svasara is a Sanskrit word that means a bird’s nest. And that is what the property is, a home to the biodiversity in the region. Ours is a rewilding journey, and we have in the last ten years planted 2000+ indigenous tree species and in the process become a natural extension of the beautiful tiger reserve itself,” reveals Ratika Sinha Ramchandran. Svasara Jungle Lodge is nestled within 10 acres of forest and a stone throw away from the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve. “Our design ethos is especially unique as we have curated a ‘safari-chic’ aesthetic using contemporary and use of natural materials with local accents,” she adds. The 12 suites at this eco-friendly property boast warm, elegantly furnished interiors and every luxury amenity. Dining will be one of your highlights here, with a bevy of cuisines on offer. For an authentic experience, sample the spicy Varadi fare served at the Svasara Jungle Lodge. “The Teakhouse, with its outdoor dining, pool and jungle cinema, is perfect to unwind after a day in the wild. Expect an unmatched safari experience too: custom-fit jeeps and in-house naturalists to get an expert’s perspective on the local fauna and flora.” With sustainability at its core, the luxury lodge is perfect for wildlife enthusiasts and eco-warriors.

2. If you want to spot the Indian rhinoceros

“Kaziranga’s diverse habitats, from grasslands, forests to floodplains, makes it an ideal hotspot for herbivores and carnivores. You can see India’s very own ‘big five’: Indian rhino, Asiatic elephant, tiger, swamp deer and water buffalo. It is considered the last stronghold of Indian rhinos in the world and hence declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site,” reveals Munish Saraswat, general manager of Wild Mahseer.

“Wild Mahseer is surrounded by lush tea plantations and located with a 22-acre Eastern Himalayan Botanic Ark, which has been curated by us. It is home to over 300 species of trees and plants, numbering over 1,00,000. Within the Ark, we have over 90 species of birds and 72 species of butterflies,” shares Munish Saraswat. The property is a nod to the lifestyle of the Raj-era. Seeped in history and named after teas, the five bungalows featuring 3-4 rooms were established by the British Assam Tea Company in 1864 for its specialists and supervisors. This is why it underpins a blend of Colonial and Assamese architecture. “The flagship stay, Burra Bungalow is certified as a ‘Heritage Building’ by the Directorate of Archaeology. Each accommodation has a private dining facility too. We call our ethos the E series: escape the everyday, embrace nature , explore history and culture, experience adventure, experience luxury. It’s all about romanticising with nature and with tea.” It’s no wonder that Wild Mahseer has hosted prominent guests like Aamir Khan and Karan Johar . A mix of Indian and continental fare is served at the First Flush.

The dry scrubland of Gir is the only natural habitat of the Asiatic lions. The numbers of the big cat have now risen to an estimated 674 in the forest region and other revenue areas of coastal Saurashtra.

Sitting amidst eight acres of a lush mango orchard on the fringes of the Sasan Gir forest, Woods At Sasan is luxury at its best, but with a wellness touch. 4. If you want to spot blackbucks

“Velavadar’s Savannah grasslands and scrub provide optimum habitat for blackbucks. The threatened species of this corkscrew-horned Indian antelope has a population of over 4,500 here. Sightings are almost guaranteed, either grazing, crossing the road or jumping into a meadow,” says Mickey Desai, founder of The Blackbuck Lodge.

The 70-acre property sits along the Velavadar Blackbuck National Park. “The Blackbuck Lodge has 14 luxury cottages. The rooms are rustic yet modern, blending the indoors with the outdoors. Every cottage is outfitted with a sitting area, bedroom, indoor and outdoor bathrooms, along with a patio and a deck with lounge chairs overlooking the exquisite bush that are perfect for sunbathing. Our plunge pool cottage and pool villa also feature private pools ,” Mickey Desai discloses. You’re likely to find blackbucks venturing close to the property, and you can also sight globally-threatened birds in the bushes. Apart from nature walks and wildlife viewing, find the time to curl up with a book at their natural history library or cycle to explore the premises. Dine at the lodge’s waterfront glassed-in dining room or dig into barbecued snacks and local Kathiawadi food under a starlit sky with a bonfire for company.

5. If you want to spot leopards

Jawai, in the Pali district of Western Rajasthan that lies between Udaipur and Jodhpur, is a remarkable place. In its hills, leopards roam wild and free. The wilderness of Jawai is not part of any national park or sanctuary. November and early March are the ideal time for a sighting of the big elusive cat.

Tiger Trails Jungle Lodge Situated along the western border of the Tadoba–Andhari reserve, this jungle lodge
 has rooms looking out at the grasslands and watering holes that dot this area. Its hidden machans offer a great opportunity to indulge in some wildlife photography . Apart 
from the jeep to head into the reserve, you can also opt for 
the canoe or electric pontoon safari on Tadoba Lake, which runs through the lodge. Website ; from Rs6,500. Getting there: The airport at Nagpur is 2hrs away. Closest national park: The lodge is alongside the Khutwanda Gate of the Tadoba–Andhari Tiger Reserve.

Irai Safari Retreat Overlooking the Irai dam’s backwaters, this retreat features cottages and tents finished with natural fabrics and rich wood—and equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi. Find some time to cycle around the grounds or take bullock-cart rides for a rustic experience in a luxury setting. BBP to open India’s largest leopard safari by month-end

Leopard safari to start in Bannerghatta by month-end

B ENGALURU: Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) will start a dedicated leopard safari, the first in South India, from June-end, Forest, Environment and Ecology Minister Eshwar B Khandre said on Monday.

The minister said the safari will be similar to the lion and tiger safari available in the park, and will be open to the public from the third week of June.

All leopards in the safari are rescued and hand-raised by the zookeepers. The safari area, spread across 20 hectares, is solar-fenced. A total of 13 leopards will be on display, on rotation basis, in 2-3 groups.

Khandre said that in-principle approval has been given to create a walkthrough in an aquarium in BBP for fresh water and salt water species, on public-private partnership. Another aquarium will be created for Mysuru Zoo in Karanji Lake.

After a meeting with the forest department and Zoo Authority of Karnataka (ZAK) officials, the minister said that soon the two departments, along with Bengaluru University, will launch a 10-month diploma course on Animal Care and Management.

An official said, “At present, there is no dedicated course on handling animals. A lot of people and organisations are setting up private centres for exotic animals. The course was started to ensure they are certified. It will be under the zoology department, and will even help zoos get trained and certified professionals. Anybody who has completed pre-university can take up the course.”

Explaining about the aquarium, BBP officials said: “The Rs 150-crore project will be completed in 2-3 years. The greenfield project is planned to be set up in an abandoned quarry site near the butterfly park, on three acres of land on PPP model. Tenders for the project will be called soon.”

During the meeting, annual reports on Karnataka’s zoos were also released. Khandre directed Mysuru Zoo management to submit a report on creation of the aquarium in a fortnight. The minister also said that approval has been given to set up a vulture breeding centre in Bannerghatta National Park, which will be managed by BBP. More veterinarians will be appointed and wages of BBP staffers will be increased.

The best safari holidays in Kenya

The good news is that the lion you hear grunting outside your tent on the plains of Kenya ’s Maasai Mara means there are plenty of animals to see. Even better, as long as you stay inside your tent at night you are completely safe.

Welcome to the wonders and worries of life on safari in this animal idyll in East Africa. Where to go? What to wear? Will I be safe? All key questions for a safari in Kenya, one of the most beautiful and thrilling places to see animals in the wild.

Nothing beats a heart-stopping moment of seeing a lioness feed her six cubs or a leopard snooze in the top branches of an acacia tree. You get shockingly close to elephants and their young crossing a river and witness thousands of wildebeest stampede a river in the Great Migration. The Maasai Mara, Kenya’s best-known savannah, is safari heaven: a vast tribal area with conservation areas and public parks that mean wonderful wildlife is guaranteed. But a safari in Kenya can also be somewhat intimidating for the first time traveller.

Essential is a good camp guide who can be like having your own private David Attenborough, recognising fork-tailed drongos and showing you why a hippo has four toe marks in the sand while a rhino has three. They zip you in jeeps from your camp across plains, over rivers and under dramatic ridges with proper anthropological knowledge and charm.

Also key to any trip is advance planning. First, get jabbed a month in advance – Yellow Fever is mandatory, a number of other vaccines are advised by the NHS , and malaria pills are essential (start a day in advance and for 10 days after). Tourist visas can be obtained online in advance.

Below, we cover everything the would-be safari explorer needs to know when planning a trip to Kenya. Take these key tips so as to avoid having to make an SOS call to your travel agent.

What do I need for a safari in Kenya?

Layers are key – you can always take items off. Hot as Africa can be, early morning game drives can be cold. Avoid bright colours and stick to basic T-shirts or shirts (preferably khaki or grey) and light trousers. Tough trainers are fine. Bring a jersey and warm(ish) jacket that zips or buttons up. Tan leather bomber jackets – easily found second-hand on eBay – are perfect.

You are likely to be flying to your camp in a small plane with less than 15kg of soft luggage. So be ruthless – three shirts are plenty as most camps do overnight laundry, for example. The key essentials are as follows: sunglasses , sun protection, and a hat. Less is more.

Kenya conveniently uses UK three-pin plugs for charging phones and laptops. A torch, Kindle, camera and binoculars are the only hardware needed. Don’t forget to bring dollars in small notes to tip – there are no ATMs in the wild.

Which safari is best in Kenya?

The area around Nairobi has attractive conservation areas, the most popular being Nairobi National Park, Lakes Nakuru and Naivasha as well as the Aberdare Mountains. The biggest name is the Maasai Mara National Reserve, home to some of Africa's best year-round game viewing as well as the annual Wildebeest Migration.

The further north you travel, the drier and hillier the landscape becomes. But there are still superb safari options here, including Samburu National Park, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Laikipia. The more arid conditions suit species like gerenuk, the Somali ostrich and Grevy's zebra. Lewa is also the best place to see rhinos. On a clear day, Mounts Kenya and Meru are visible. This is the best place to see snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. Kili actually lies in Tanzania, but Kenya's Amboseli National Park is so close to the border that it has incredible vantage points.

This part of Kenya is wetter and the terrain more varied: Amboseli, for example, is a beautiful mix of open savannah, wetlands, woodlands and hills, ideal for a wide variety of species, from bat-eared foxes to elephants. Nearby are the Chyulu Hills and Tsavo East and West National Parks.

Way down on the south-eastern coast is some of Kenya's best beaches . Hit Diani and nearby Galu for top beach lodges and water sports like kitesurfing. Head to Funzi Island for snorkelling and diving. I was asked for a bit of Indiana Jones with a side of luxury for my honeymoon . Kenya is exactly that.

Where to stay on safari in Kenya

The many different camps vary from maharajah-grand to plain and unadorned. These are two of our favourites.

Great Plains Mara Expedition Camp

The sound outside our tent was a zebra’s yappy bark. Amid a grove of 7,000 trees, this could pass as the inspiration for Out of Africa. Just a 50-minute hop in a small plane from Nairobi, comfort and wilderness magically combine here – a camp that is truly in the wild, with just six tents in the Maasai Mara. They are a throwback to Edwardian glamour. Campaign desks with leather-covered chairs, cotton sheets, an en-suite bathroom with copper fans and brass showers, and WiFi, all under canvas – it’s all more country house than camping discomfort. Hot water 24-hours a day is solar powered. Vegetables are grown on-site and prepared by an exceptional chef who whips up fruit roulade, fennel and garlic soup and mint-scented lamb kofta. At this camp, the Big Five (except rhinos) are likely to be seen on game drives in open-sided Land Cruisers with a free-loan long-lens digital camera. Great game-viewing takes place with guides by balloon, foot or jeep. This is a camp that majors on authenticity and charm.

Mara Plains Camp

Not far from our tent, a leopard sat on the fork of a desert date tree. There is a Moroccan feel to this camp on wooden stilts and roped walkways in the Maasai Mara. It is a tented temple to camping comfort: a copper bath, leather luggage trunks as tables, a king-sized bedroom and a vast room for children. The early morning game drive from Mara Plains Camp includes a hot water bottle to ease the early morning chill. All is as eco as possible with solar power and not an inch of plastic. Your own metal water flask ice is -filled every day. The spa room opens onto acacia dotted plains. The game drive guides know their stuff, down to the gestation period of a warthog. This is nature in tooth and claw on your doorstep. A leopard scuttles away from a Topi antelope it has caught, as 16 hyenas snarl and fight for a bite. A dazzle of 1,000 zebras dots the veld. The camp’s reception area for its six tents is lit by candles and lanterns. Guards with torches escort you to your tent and cheerily warn that the noises heard in the night are likely to be hippos or a lion – so enjoy the sounds, but stay inside.

When is the best time to go on a safari in Kenya?

Avoid the rainy season in April and May. The high season runs from June to October when the massive wildebeest and zebra herds are on the move in their hundreds of thousands from about August to November.
