When July turns into August and you’re fretting that summer is flying by too quickly, it’s time to plan some travel. Even a long weekend trip or staycation will be satisfying and fun, especially for the young ones who may be ready for a change of pace. A beach or pool in California, Hawaii, Mexico, or Florida might fit the bill, and for those longing for distant places, we have several suggestions, including Kenya, Scotland, and Montenegro. 

Fresh mountain air in Jackson Hole and delightful breezes in New England, Nova Scotia, and Chicago (there are beaches on Lake Michigan and cruises on the Chicago River) will be refreshing in August. These are the best places to travel in August in the U.S. and around the world.

Malibu, California

From a 30-mile stretch of surf to the hills and canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains, Malibu is a destination to put on your summer itinerary. Malibu’s beaches are world famous, and beyond that, the city with the glamorous reputation offers hiking, culture, wineries, and history. August falls in the area’s dry season (from July to September), so a trip then is well-timed for the thrilling annual Great Migration when more than two million wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, and many of their predators cross the Serengeti into Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Located in southwest Kenya, Maasai Mara National Reserve is also home to lions, elephants, African buffalos, Thomson’s gazelles, and cheetahs. The nomadic Maasai tribe also lives in the area, herding their cattle and often welcoming visitors as tour leaders or selling their handmade items. The popular Architecture River Cruise offers a 90-minute guided tour, and an evening version highlights the city skyline. On the Navy Pier , visitors can watch fireworks on Wednesday and Saturday evenings. The annual Chicago Air & Water Show will be held on Aug. 19-20, and on Aug. 3-6, Lollapalooza takes place in Grant Park. Baseball fans can watch the “Crosstown Classic” on Aug. 15-16 when the White Sox and Cubs meet in Wrigley Field. Chicago’s beaches , parks, Riverwalk , and “The 606” green space are ways to enjoy the outdoors, along with concerts and summer films in Millennium Park . August is the sunniest and arguably the most exciting month in Edinburgh , with festivals galore, and it’s a great time to visit the United Kingdom, Travel + Leisure’s Destination of the Year . The temperature is in the comfortable mid-60s, and excitement is all around the historic city. The month begins with music, dance, theater, and opera at the International Festival and thousands of free performances throughout the city with the Fringe Festival , both set for Aug. 4-27. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo runs from Aug. 4-26, and the Art Festival runs from Aug. 11-27. Be sure to take time to explore the city’s history as you enjoy the atmosphere. Nova Scotia, Canada

Nova Scotia’s short summer from mid-June to mid-September brings temperatures in the pleasant 70s, with a few days a bit warmer. The peninsula, one of Canada’s maritime provinces, is located east of Maine. Festivals mark the summer season, with events throughout the area. Visitors and locals take advantage of the warm weather with whale watching , surfing , kayaking , canoeing, boating, fishing , and water sports. On land, hiking, fossil hunting, stargazing , and golf are favorite activities. Sample local wines , and visit distilleries, breweries, cideries, and seafood restaurants. Cabot Cape Breton offers stunning surroundings, dining, and a 72-room lodge with ocean views from every room. Sure, every month of the year can theoretically mean it’s holiday season, but the whole ‘school’s out’ element certainly makes August the prime time for stuffing a bag and heading off on a jaunt. However, the go-to summer holiday destinations snapping a selfie can mean sardine-like conditions, and accommodation is hardly at its most affordable. 

Fear not, weary traveller. Save some room in your suitcase by leaving that cynicism at home – some lesser-visited patches of the world show their best side in August, so we’ve brought you a brilliant round-up for if you’re looking somewhere a little different. From the wilds of Alaska and the plains of East Africa to the winteryness of South America and the mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina, these are the best places in the world to travel in August.

1.  Carcassone, France

France isn’t short of cracking holiday destinations. But may I make a case for the delightful Carcassonne, which isn't (completely) overrun with tourists like some of the others? There's the famous castle, sure, which is actually a properly good tourist attraction, completely beautiful and not too busy if you go in the morning. But there’s also the beautiful Cavayére Lake just a short one-euro bus ride out of the town, which is really quiet even in peak season, and has tons of kids activities and a more kid-free area too. You can sip beers in the main square by the fountain, do a classic French food shop in the supermarché, buy ridiculously good pastries at Pâtisserie Papineau and have lots (and lots) of cassoulet for dinner. You’ll also find a mixture of traditional museums and galleries showcasing local works and a number of lovely vineyards nearby. If you’ve got the car, consider a French road trip to hit Nice, Nîmes and more along the way.

2.  Alaska

August is slightly rainier in Alaska than earlier summer months, but with fewer crowds and lower prices, the benefits often outweigh the weather risks. It’s a wonderful month to spot caribou, wolves and golden eagles in Denali National Park, as well as grizzly bears, who are busy hunting salmon so they can fatten up before hibernation. They also nibble on the season’s abundant berries – blueberries are particularly fat and juicy in Alaska – and you can also taste them at the annual Alyeska Berry Festival in Anchorage. Don’t miss Alaska State Fair in Palmer, which marks the last days of summer with concerts, fairground rides and street food.

3.  Slovenia

Slovenia might just be Europe’s worst-kept secret. In August, the capital Ljubljana and Lakes Bled and Bohinj are packed with locals and tourists alike, but if you do want to guarantee a crowd-free trip, there are plenty of lesser-known corners of this compact country to explore. As the holiday resorts sizzle, alpine regions offer respite from the heat, making it the perfect time to climb Mount Triglav. But if you really want to get off the beaten track, head east to wander around the pretty towns of Maribor and Ptuj, or go wine tasting in the surrounding Styrian vineyards. Slovenia has gorgeous towns around every corner, from Idrija to Kamnika via Radovljica, Brežice and all the rest.

4.  Edinburgh, Scotland

There is literally no better time to finally tick Edinburgh off your bucket list than in August, when the famous Edinburgh Fringe  (the biggest arts festival in the entire world) takes over the city. Be you a comedy, theatre, film or music person, the Fringe is a fun, fast, chaotic burst of all things silly and creative. There’s bars, street food, nights out and more, and we’ll be reviewing all the shows you need to know about, so keep your eyes peeled.

5.  Iceland

There’s never a bad time to visit Iceland, right? August is the warmest month of the year here, but do remember that that means daily averages between 10 and 15 degrees celsius, so it is hardly sweltering. Still, balmy for Iceland, and visiting this gorgeous part of the world during the ubiquitously-bright summer months is an experience in itself. The grass is a little greener during August, and the warmer weather allows Iceland’s wonderful wildlife the chance to cavort through the fields. Yes, it is just like a fairytale.

6.  East Africa

All kinds of adventures await in East Africa in August. The Great Migration is in full swing, meaning wildlife-spotting opportunities abound in Kenya’s Maasai Mara and Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, and it’s also one of the best times of year to track silverback gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda. Beach bum? Into your snorkelling and scuba diving? The weather is warm and dry (and the waters brimming with marine life) on Pemba Island and Zanzibar.

7.  Seattle, USA

The Pacific Northwest has a reputation for being, how do we say this, a little bit drizzly. What is the best way to ensure good weather when visiting? Nothing is certain in this life, of course, but heading to Seattle and its surroundings in August is your best bet. The warm weather means outdoor activities aplenty, from city markets and food festivals to embracing nearby nature, while the ferries are also at their busiest during this time.

8.  Sri Lanka

Beach lovers will have the pick of the sand in Sri Lanka in August, with good weather expected pretty much everywhere in the north, east and west. Lower rainfall means an altogether more relaxed time, and August also represents the tail-end of the low season in Sri Lanka, so fewer crowds. It isn’t unusual to see blue whales here at this time of year too, and who wouldn’t want to see the world’s largest animal doing its thing?

9.  Riga, Latvia

If you want an affordable European break in August, make it Riga. With its colourful old town and beautiful parks, it’s easy to while away the summer days here without breaking the bank. The warmest month of the year sees the capital come to life with open-air concerts, street performances, pop-up food stalls and firework shows.

10.  Buenos Aires

It’s winter in Buenos Aires, but the low season is the best time to live like a local, as residents often escape the city during the busier summer months. Culturally the capital is very much alive and kicking, with the two-week-long Tango Festival and World Cup showcasing the best of Argentina’s national dance with free performances, workshops and talks, as well as the pro-competition.

11.  Bosnia and Herzegovina

A word of warning; it can get pretty darn hot in Bosnia and Herzegovina in August. That is more true in Herzegovina than Bosnia (Mostar tends to hover around the 40C mark), but refreshing salvation is at hand in the shape of the country’s fantastic mountains. Hiking in Bosnia and Herzegovina is still developing, but an enthusiastic group of organisations have opened up mountains like Prenj, Maglaj (the country’s highest) and Vlašić, not to mention the Olympic mountains around Sarajevo. Keep to the trails though, for your own safety.

12.  Madeira

Madeira’s mild temperatures make it a winner with travellers year-round, but summer is the best time to spot or swim with whales and dolphins, of which there are more than 20 species in the island’s waters. It’s also a fine time for scuba diving, canyoning and coasteering, as well as hiking the interior’s rugged hillside trails, which follow a network of levadas – ingenious aqueducts constructed between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries to transport water to communities living in the southeast of the island.

13.  Samoa

Looking for a low-key paradise isle? Samoa is blissfully free of flashy resorts and tourist traps, letting its natural and cultural riches speak for themselves. Samoa is popular with New Zealanders and Australians looking for a little winter sunshine, so book ahead to nab yourself a beach hut (known as a fale ) and spend your days hopping between the islands’ must-sees, including Insta-friendly To-Sua Ocean Trench, the Alofaaga blowholes and Falealupo Canopy Walk.

14.  Bulgaria

Ready for long summer days spent partying on the beach? Make a beeline for Bulgaria’s affordable Black Sea Coast resorts, where there’s a sun lounger (and a glass of rakia) with your name on it. If you’re after a little culture, you’ll find the antidote to the region’s Irish pubs in Burgas, where the International Folklore Festival welcomes traditional singers, musicians and dancers from all over the Balkans and beyond to showcase their talents in late August. Inland, adventurous types should tackle Bulgaria’s highest peak, Mount Musala (2,925m), before the snows return.

15.  Indonesia

There are 17,000 islands in Indonesia – but few travellers venture beyond Bali . August brings the best weather and the inevitable accompanying crowds, so you’re better off skipping the chaos of Kuta and yogi-saturated Ubud for underrated isles such as Sumba or Pulau Weh, both of which boast white sands, turquoise waters and cheaper accommodation. Raja Ampat in West Papua receives some rain at this time of year, but don’t let that put you off booking a homestay and exploring its dazzling coral reef.

The Best Places to Travel in August

Is there any month more tailor-made for a vacation than August? The peak of summer is the perfect time to jettison all 9-to-5 obligations and indulge in a trip, whether you’re soaking up the sun on an exclusive Mediterranean island or holing up in a bucolic corner of the Mid-Atlantic. Plus, with the E.U. opening up to U.S. tourists this summer and states lifting COVID restrictions, we’re more excited to book a flight than ever. If you’re hoping to squeeze in a vacation before Labor Day, here are nine of the best places to travel in August.

Madeira, Portugal

This island, 300 miles west of Morocco, is synonymous with winemaking and wine drinking. The Madeira Wine Festival (August 29 through September 12) showcases how the islanders developed the unique oxidation process to create their trademark wine six centuries ago. There are events and celebrations throughout the island, but be sure to visit Cabo Girão, where the microclimate around the cliffs allowed Jesuits to cultivate malvasia grapes and develop the sweet malmsey wine. The vertigo-inducing skywalk here is the highest such installation in Europe, though it’s best to try it before imbibing too much.

The Great Migration is one of the awe-inspiring natural spectacles on the planet, when more than 1.5 million wildebeest sweep through East Africa between July and October every year. In Kenya, the best place to watch the phenomenon is the Masai Mara National Reserve, with ample rivers (that’s where the real action takes place) and cliffs overlooking the savannah.

Set up shop at the 15-suite Angama Mara , which sits close to the Mara River and affords 180-degree views of the surrounding plains. Even if you miss some of the migration action, you'll be able to see elephant, buffalo, and giraffe from your suite, or take a Maasai-led walking safari to see even more wildlife.

Woodstock, Vermont

One of the most beautiful towns in America, Woodstock’s appeal extends far beyond fall foliage and craft beer. The city oozes New England charm in any season, which is clearly evidenced by the lovely and quaint Woodstock Inn & Resort . The 142-room hotel thrives in the summer, when the on-site garden boasts more than 200 varieties of produce that get sent directly to the property’s two restaurants.

And the seasonal delights don’t end there. Just down the road at the Billings Farm & Museum, the 20,000-square-foot Sunflower House will enter its third year in bloom this summer. Thousands of sunflowers (which reach peak bloom in mid-August) will be planted in a maze-like structure, ranging in height from 18 inches to a staggering 14 feet.

Costa Smeralda, Sardinia

Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda is one of Europe’s most glamorous summer getaways, with stunning white sands and yacht-crammed waters off Porto Cervo. (Depending on where you are, the temperatures range from 70 to 99 degrees during August.) Get your dose of thrills with an ATV ride around the Coral Pink Sand Dunes, with 2,000 acres of sand that turn pink as the sun begins to set. Or choose from ten zip-lines (one of which reaches a speed of 65 mph) at Deer Creek State Park.

If you prefer to watch the action from the sidelines, watch drivers try to break world records at the Bonneville Salt Flats during Bonneville Speed Week (August 7-13). Whatever type of activity you crave, Utah probably has it somewhere. Napa Valley, California

Napa Valley is one of the best places to travel in August, corresponding with the region's harvest season (August through October). The crowds tend to be a bit denser during this time, but you can still have a luxurious, intimate vacation—if you know where to look. Start by setting your sights on the Four Seasons Resort Napa Valley, one of the most exciting new hotels of the summer. When it opens, it will be the only Napa property that sits on an active winery. Add to that a dedicated kids club and world-class spa, and you have yourself one stellar stay.

Summer is the season of state fairs, and few states do the tradition justice better than Minnesota. The nation’s second-largest fair (after Texas, of course) was canceled in 2020, but Gov. 1. Glacier National Park, Montana

It’s one of the absolute best places to visit in August in the US – Glacier National Park is a stunning gem in this country! Nicknamed the crown of the continent , this incredible park is only fully open during a short time during the year, and August is part of that window of opportunity!

Because of it’s elevation and location in northern Montana, much of the park, including the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road is under snow until July, then again in late September or early October. This 50-mile stretch of road is one of the greatest road trips in America .

Drive over the continental divide, stopping at viewpoints and overlooks along the way. There are plenty of lakes and waterfalls in Glacier National Park, including the famous Lake McDonald, with its brightly colored rocks along the shore . Be sure to enjoy the beautiful Saint Mary Lake and nearby Virginia Falls.

Perhaps one of the most popular hikes in the park is the Hidden Lake Trail. This trail to the overlook may even take you over snow (yes, even in August!) because of the high elevation. Be prepared with hiking boots with traction and trekking poles for this hike!

Just note that whether you’re planning a trip to Glacier National Park in August, you’ll want to plan early. A timed entry reservation is required to enter the park, until 3:00pm. Enjoy several evenings in the park or be sure to hop online the moment tickets for August open up.

2. San Francisco, California (one of the best places to visit in August for cool weather)

San Francisco is one of the best places in the U.S. in August to beat the heat. While much of the country is sweltering in summer, the August highs in San Francisco only reach the low 70s.

The humidity is also low , and the average rain fall is zero. But bring a sweater, the nightly temps dip into the 50s.

The August climate is perfect for long walks to see the sights and visit the parks.

To see great views of the Golden Gate Bridge, it’s best to visit the Presidio which boarders the bay. In the Presidio, Crissy Field will provide that instagrammable bridge photo. You can walk trails and explore nature, but it also has its fare share of museums.

On the boarder of the Presidio and the Marina, don’t miss the Palace of Fine Arts, a beautiful monument with a pond.

Nature lovers should cross the Golden Gate Bridge to find Muir Woods National Monument where you can hike through the iconic redwoods. Some of the trees in the Cathedral Grove are 250 feet high and over 750 years olds.

3. Lake Placid, New York

Lake Placid is one of the most beautiful destinations in Upstate New York. With its small walkable town center with delicious dining and outdoor eateries, it’s one of the best places to visit in August.

Lake Placid sits on Mirror Lake and is surrounded by the mountainous range of the Adirondacks which makes it an ideal outdoor sports destination. During the month of August, you can kayak on Mirror Lake, or go hiking in the Adirondack mountains.

The most beautiful summit is Cascade Mountain which sits at over 4,000 ft. above sea level and provides the most stunning views of the Adirondacks. Cascade Mountain is a challenging hike and you should put aside almost a full day to hike to the top and down again (3.5 hours each way.) 

Those looking to see spectacular views from an easier hike should try Baxter Mountain , which sits at 2,000 feet and has gorgeous views from the top.

Other summer activities in Lake Placid include visiting the famous High Falls Gorge, a privately owned nature park that has several waterfalls with suspension bridges hanging overtop to admire them.

Also, be sure to take a relaxing scenic walk around John Brown Farm, which allows you to step back in time by visiting John Brown’s fight for the abolition of slavery. You can visit his grave and farmhouse, and learn about an important piece of Lake Placid’s history.

August is one of the best months to Visit Colorado Springs , especially if you’re looking to enjoy any of the many outdoor activities. Through most of August the highs are in the low 80s and the lows are in the mid-50s which makes it absolutely perfect for tent camping. 

If you’re looking to hike and experience some of Colorado Springs’s beautiful landscape then Garden of the Gods is the place to be. There are few places on earth with such a rich combination of trees and towering rock formations. 

For much of the year, the temperatures at Garden of the Gods are below 50 degrees even in the warmest parts of the day . Visiting in August will give you the opportunity to hike the rock formations in a little warmer weather. 

Another great place to check out while it’s a little warmer is the Broadmoor Seven Falls. You can actually like the 224 steps all the way to the top of the waterfall and check out some amazing views of the water cascading down below! 

If you’re looking to enjoy the outdoors but aren’t into hiking then there’s no better place than Pike’s Peak. You can actually drive to the top of Pikes Peak which has incredible views in every direction . It’s one of only 2 mountains in Colorado above 14,000 ft. where you can do that!

One of the most underrated an best vacations in August is the shores of Lake Erie, Ohio. This beautiful area gives off all the tropical vibes, while located on a Great Lake!

There’s so many things to do in Sandusky, Ohio like visiting one of the oldest amusement parks in America – Cedar Point. Or, visit one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world, Marblehead Lighthouse.

For all the island vibes, head over to Put-in-Bay, Ohio or Kelleys Island, Ohio.

Sink your toes in the sand and enjoy a cocktail in down town Put-in-Bay. Visit the world’s largest celestine geode, Crystal Cave (which also happens to share property with a fabulous winery!) For some history, visit Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial and the the world’s largest Greek Doric Column.

The tourist season in Alaska is relatively short due to the harsh climate. It lasts from mid-June to mid-September. Therefore, it’s worth considering August when  planning a vacation to Alaska .

The days are still very long, and the temperatures are mild. The average temperature on the Alaskan coast in August is 50-60 degrees, with 18 hours of daylight. The temperature in inland Alaska in August is 45-65 degrees and 18 hours of the day.

August is the beginning of the end of the Alaskan summer. It’s still warm and sunny, but it’s the beginning of the rainy season. So it’s worth packing a rain poncho in case of showers.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised to see the beautiful fall colors are already showing in August and fewer tourists than in June and July.

Another major advantage of traveling to Alaska in August is the wildlife is still very active. It’s actually the perfect time to see grizzly bears, black bears, moose, elk or caribou.

7. Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia & North Carolina

If you’re searching for one of the best vacation destinations in the USA in August then you can’t beat a Blue Ridge Parkway drive . 

After all, this incredible journey is a stunning, 469-mile drive that starts in Charlottesville Virginia and ends in Asheville, North Carolina.

Along the way, you’ll drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains and past some of the most incredible landscapes in the world. However, because the speed limit on this road is 45 mph, you’ll want to give yourself at least 3-4 days to complete this drive. 

August is also a great month to visit since the mountains will be exceptionally lush and green. 

Plus, heading up to higher elevations will allow you to escape some of the heat and humidity that can be found at lower elevations. In fact, you can expect daily highs of 89°F (31°C) and daily lows of of 66°F (19°C) with a bit of humidity too. 

Now, although there are countless places for you to explore during this incredible trip, major highlights are the Blueridge Music Center, Humpback Gap and Natural Bridge State Park.

Finally, when you arrive in Asheville be sure to check out the incredible Biltmore Estate and enjoy all the historic grandeur that this immortal place has to offer before grabbing a pint at the Wicked Weed Brewing Pub. 

You can also spend a lavish night at the 4-star, Omni Grove Park Inn. It’s an incredible historic inn that was built in 1913 and that offers guests amazing views of the Blue Ridge Mountains .

Nestled in the mountains of West Virginia, New River Gorge National Park is the perfect summer vacation destination and one of the best places to visit in the US in August . The stunning scenery makes it one of the best East Coast national parks to visit.

Whitewater rafting is one of the most popular activities in the warmer months. Rafting the New River isn’t for the faint of heart though! There are two options for New River rafting trips.

You’ll see Class II – V rapids on the Lower New. If you’re looking for something a bit easier then the Upper New offers Class I – III rapids.

For something a bit more peaceful, you can hit one of the many hiking trails in the park. Long Point will give you a gorgeous view of the iconic New River Gorge Bridge . Endless Wall is another popular one with great views of the gorge.

The Kaymoor Miners Trail is perfect for any history buff as there are remains of the mine site that was operational from 1900 to 1962. Sandstone Falls is a gorgeous waterfall you can reach with a short, easy hike.

You can expect highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s which makes for perfect hiking weather.

Once you’re done adventuring in the park, head into Fayetteville and have dinner at Pies & Pints or stop for lunch at Cathedral Cafe.

If you’re looking for the best places to travel in August, look no further than Monterey, California. This charming sea-side city has so much to offer! Whether you’re traveling as a couple, solo, with friends or your family, there’s so many things to do and see in Monterey California in August!

One of the best things to do with kids in Monterey (or really any age!) is to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium .

Within the aquarium, you’ll see there are so many unique experiences wit the ability, to touch, learn, discover and learn out various marine life. The aquarium also puts a large emphasis on conservation efforts, which I personally love.

While in the area, make sure to check out the shops and restaurants along Cannery Row.

There’s a ton of outdoor adventures near Monterey as well. The 17 Mile Drive at Pebble Beach is a popular daytime adventure, with beautiful ocean views. Or spend a day watching sea otters at the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve.

Monterey is a great starting point, and you can drive part of the coast and loop back up, or stay a few days to experience this magnificent part of the country!

Zion National Park is a great place to visit in August. The scenery in Zion is at its most beautiful at this time of year, and all the hiking trails are open!

Zion is full of spectacular hiking trails, with the best ones being  Angels Landing  (one of the most spectacular hikes in the US!), Observation Point Trail, and The Narrows.

Zion National Park is busy during August – despite it being very hot (temperatures can reach 110 degrees Fahrenheit!). Start your day early – ideally before sunrise, or late afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds.

Whilst it is hot in Zion in August, it is actually a great park to visit in August as there are many hikes that run along a river, for example the Riverside Walk or the Taylor Creek Hike so you can cool off when you get hot. 

You can hike to the waterfalls at Emerald Pools and walk behind the waterfall through the mist, or you can go tubing along the Virgin River which is a great way to cool down!

Make sure to stop for an ice cream at the Zion Lodge afterwards – perfect!

The nearest accommodation is Zion National Park Lodge – located right inside the National Park . If you’ll be in an RV you can stay at the Zion Canyon Campground and RV Resort nearby. Make sure to book accommodation beforehand as August is peak season and gets booked out quickly!

Stonington, Maine is a charming coastal town located on the southern tip of Deer Isle. August is an ideal time to visit Stonington as it offers fewer crowds than the middle of the summer and a plethora of outdoor activities.

The heat is tolerable, especially if you stick to outdoors activities early in the day. One of the best things to do in Albuquerque is to ride the Sandia Peak Tramway. Ride a gondola from 6,559 feet at the base to the top at 10,387 feet in elevation.

Spend the afternoon at the beach swimming, beach combing, or biking, and end the day at the Beachcomber restaurant . The Beachcomber is a classic Cape Cod seafood joint, and the only commercial property allowed along the protected shore. Grab a cocktail, and try some famous local Wellfleet oysters after a day in the sun.

The parking at Cahoon Hollow Beach fills up very quickly and can be expensive . I’d recommend booking accommodation nearby and Ubering (or biking) to the beach to avoid the headache.

If looking for a place to stay nearby, I’d recommend the Endless Coast Boutique Hotel as it is quiet and charming yet less than 2 miles from the beach. 

Even after hours, Cahoon Hollow Beach still has a fun atmosphere. Many beachgoers will stay on the beach to watch the sunset and have a bonfire.

This area of Cape Cod is rated as one of the best spots for stargazing in Massachusetts due to the lack of light pollution on the Outer Cape . Truly the best late summer experience morning to night!

During a visit, you can enjoy several water-based activities, including surfing, fishing, snorkeling, and shell hunting along the beach. If you’re lucky, you may even have the opportunity to see wild horses along the shore, which is one of the best free things to do in the Outer Banks!

When it comes to the best attractions in Illinois Chicago , it is hard to decide because it is brimming with activities. However, to narrow the list for you, we selected the best things to do in Chicago during August.

For starters, Chicago is a great place to enjoy live music and concerts . The concerts and music events are scattered all over the city in August.

As matter of fact, the weather in August makes it a perfect spot for outdoor concert. Therefore, there are exciting concerts happening everyday in Chicago all throughout August. You’ll surely find one that fits your taste!

You can also enjoy Air and Water Show by the lakefront of Lake Michigan and Milliken Parade in Bronzeville.

Olympic National Park in Washington State is one of the very best places to visit in August in the USA. With lush ancient forests, rugged coastlines, and snow-capped mountains, the park offers something for everyone.   It’s perfect for hiking, camping, fishing, boating, and has many scenic drives offering stunning views. 

August is a great time to hike Hurricane Ridge . The trail is known for its breath-taking views of the Olympic Mountains and unique alpine meadows. 

There are many miles of hikes for all levels and abilities and many ranger led activities during the summer months.   Be sure to stop off at the Visitor Center for full details and to make the most of the spectacular views from the observation deck.

In the foothills of the Olympics you’ll find Lake Crescent, a stunning lake surrounded by forests and majestic mountains . The lake itself is crystal clear with a variety of hiking trails. The Marymere Falls Trail is an easy loop, while the Mount Storm King trail is more challenging with spectacular views of the lake.

The Lake offers a host of activities too! Don’t forget your swimsuit because the water temperature averages around 70 degrees and is perfect for a dip!

If you’re feeling more adventurous, rent a kayak and explore more of this beautiful lake.

34. Twin Falls, Idaho

One of the most underrated states on this list of best places to visit in August is Idaho. Home to an amazing variety of outdoor activities and attractions, it simply doesn’t get enough attention!

The town of Twin Falls, Idaho in the southern part of the state is a great weekend getaway destination. One of the town’s main attractions is Shoshone Falls , one of the things Idaho is known for !

This large waterfall along the Snake River is a sight to see! By late August the waterfall isn’t nearly as lush as it is in the spring, but it’s still fun to visit.

There’s plenty of other outdoor activities and sight seeing as well. Visit the Centennial Waterfront Park and the Perrine Memorial Bridge. Check out the views of the river and canyon at the Snake River Canyon Overlook or visit the Thousand Springs State Park.

While you’re in Twin Falls, be sure to visit historic downtown for shops and galleries plus great places to eat!

There’s also plenty of hiking and camping opportunities in the nearby Sawtooth National Forest, with elevations from 5,000 – 7,000 feet. Try the Proctor Mountain Trial, Lady Face Falls or Chocolate Gulch Trail for fabulous mountain views.

35. St. Croix, US Virgin Islands (best places to visit in August with epic ocean views)

St. Croix, a stunning U.S. territory in the Caribbean Ocean, is an enchanting island with gorgeous blue water, verdant tropical scenery, and Danish colonial architecture .

Since most tourists visit in the winter to escape the cold and experience the island’s special Christmas celebrations, August is a great time to  explore St. Croix  without the crowds. 

During August, the island has an average high of 87 degrees, an average low of 77 degrees, and about ten rainy days. There is always a chance St. Croix could be hit with a tropical storm, but they are rare . Most days are sunny and warm, with perfect beach weather and calm water.

While visiting St. Croix, you can take advantage of world-class scuba diving and snorkeling at the vibrant Buck Island Reef National Monument.

You can also enjoy the island’s many beaches without the crowds and swim in the island’s natural tide pools. After dark, you can jump into one the island’s two bioluminescent bays before enjoying some tasty local ital food. 

Most St. Croix visitors stay in one of the island’s two colorful main towns (Christianstead and Fredricksted) or at a waterfront hotel. Some of the best hotels on the island include Father Leaf Inn, The Waves at Cane Bay, and Hotel on the Cay.

Note: when planning a trip to the Caribbean during hurricane season (June – November), don’t forget to buy travel insurance, just in case!

36. New York City, New York (best place to travel in August for big city sights)

New York City always comes to mind when thinking of the best places to visit in August. 

You don’t have to have visited New York to be aware of this city’s plethora of iconic landmarks and outdoor spaces, with each attraction only becoming more enjoyable in warmer weather.

Start your trip to New York with a sunrise walk along the Brooklyn Bridge or the High Line. After sunrise, be sure to check out the fountain in Washington Square Park and then spend some time in the famous Central Park . Finally, head up to some of the best observation decks NYC to experience New York City from a bird’s eye view. 

New York has certain peak times. The summer months and over the Holiday period (Christmas) is when the city will see the most tourists. So, expect bigger crowds and long queues. These can be avoided through planning and booking tickets to attractions in advance.

There is a multitude of hotels in New York to choose from, and it is very much dependent on what atmosphere you are looking for. For example, in Manhattan, you will find more luxurious hotels, whereas, in a location like Brooklyn, you will be encased in more of the local community.

Where to travel in August – saved the best for last! Really though, San Diego, California is a fabulous vacation destination. Whether you’re traveling solo, going with friends, family or as a couple, this destination has a little bit of everything for every vacation style.

Music festivals, sporting events, surfing competitions and more events fill the weekends in August in San Diego. If you’re not busy attending one of the city’s events, be sure to visit Old Town San Diego , which is the birthplace of California and full of so much history. Also – a huge concentration of Mexican restaurants!

Be sure to visit downtown San Diego. Balboa Park is an amazing spot in the city. Museums, hiking trails, botanical gardens and so much more! Oh, and the world-famous San Diego Zoo is nearby and worth a visit!

If you have just 1 or 2 days in San Diego , be sure to visit Condado at sunset. The sand on Condado Beach sparkles like diamonds because of a unique element – mica. It’s a picture-perfect way to end a weekend getaway in San Diego.

18 Amazing Places to Visit in August in the USA

With balmy temperatures, long days, and endless hours of sunshine, I think the summer months in this country are the best time to create incredible memories! Here are my favorite spots from my time spent exploring during August…

1. Half Moon Bay, Northern California

I love this gem of a place located just south of San Francisco lies pretty Half Moon Bay! Like much of the California coast, it has a pleasant climate, although the nights can be cool and often foggy; this month has some of the best weather.

Many of North California’s best beaches, like Venice and Francis, are here. My favorite was Mavericks Beach, located just north of the town. I loved watching the surfers here and the waves that can reach 18m in height. 

I also hiked and would recommend the Devil’s Slide Trail, a 2-kilometer trail with seriously awesome views of the dramatic coastline!

My favorite highlights…

• Walking along the Coastside Trail, which stretches nearly 5 miles long and where I saw gorgeous views overlooking the ocean.

2. Mackinac Island, Michigan

Located in Lake Huron, this resort island has no cars, and the old buildings are beautifully maintained. I’m a massive fan of this gem because when I visit, I feel like I’m traveling back in time! 

I recommend strolling down the town streets, admiring the Victorian buildings, and then stopping by one of the town’s 12 museums.

I loved the range of outdoor pursuit options, from sailing to strolling along the beaches. And if you have a sweet tooth, I suggest trying some local fudge. There is a 3-day event towards the end of this month that celebrates this local sweet treat!

• Checking out the interesting Fort Mackinac which was founded in 1870.

3. Priest Lake, Idaho

I love this stunning beauty spot and the State Park that adjoins it! Located close to the Canadian border, it’s surrounded by high mountains and fir and cedar forests, the home of black bears, a few grizzlies, moose, and whitetail deer.

If you want to stay over, there are a few accommodation options, from resorts such as Hill’s and Elkin’s to do-it-yourself State camping grounds.

In my opinion, July and this month are great times to visit if you enjoy temperate weather (up to 29c) and want to hike, swim, or go boating.

I love the beauty and clarity of this lake, the rivers that feed it, and the breathtaking scenery; it’s a tranquil gem!

4. Cambria, California

I personally think there’s nothing better than a Californian summer road trip, and I love this relaxed and welcoming beach town located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. It’s ideally situated if you are traveling the iconic Highway One route, so I highly recommend stopping for a while.

In my experience, this month is a great time to visit. The weather is pleasant, with low rainfall, and it is perfect for hiking, cycling, and swimming. Moonstone Beach offers something for everyone, and I recommend beachcombing for moonstones or trying to spot otters or seals! 

I also suggest strolling the mile-long boardwalk, visiting the nearby impressive Hearst Castle , hiking the Coastal Bluff Trail for beautiful coastline views, and visiting the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery.

While it is much quieter this month, this is when the bull seals finish their moulting, and I loved watching them relaxing on the beach. Cambria is also a foodie’s heaven, with many types of cuisine available and wineries just a fifteen-minute drive away.

• Taking a stroll across the gorgeous Moonstone Beach, one of California’s most beautiful beaches.
• Walking through the historic downtown filled with shopping boutiques, restaurants and a cool micro-brewery.
• Hiking the very scenic Bluff Trail at Fiscalini Ranch Preserve.

5. San Juan Islands, Washington

I recommend heading north from Seattle to Anacortes for a fantastic summer trip to catch one of the Washington State Ferries. The ferry transported me to four of the 172 islands and islets of San Juan. The weather in the islands is pretty temperate all year round but at its best towards the end of summer.

One of my favorite activities here is whale watching. This is one of the regions where orcas and other whales can be seen year-round via the boat tours that set off from Friday Harbour on San Juan.

Each of the four main islands has its attractions, but I personally think Orcas and San Juan are the must-dos if you have limited time! 

San Juan is the busiest and most populated island, but it is still tranquil compared to the mainland. I suggest visiting the Whale Museum to learn more about these magnificent creatures, enjoying one of the local restaurants, and picking an outdoor activity ranging from hiking to kayaking!

If you want more peace, I suggest heading to Orcas Island. It is home to amazing hikes, like the 6 km hike up Mt Constitution. On a clear day, you can see Mt Rainier and even Vancouver!

My personal highlights…

• Renting a bike and exploring around the islands.
• Going on an adrenaline-pumping 3-hour ziplining adventure.
• Sampling mouth-watering local gin at the island’s distillery! 

6. South Lake Tahoe, California

I’m a big fan of Lake Tahoe and not just as a winter sports destination, in my opinion, it has a lot of fun and activities to offer all year round.

There are many trails, ranging from children—and dog-friendly paths to more challenging routes. I tried and recommend the flat and accessible Spooner Lake Hike or the day-long Mt.Tallac Trail, which is 5 miles and rises 3,000 feet.

For the intrepid, I recommend the 265-kilometer Tahoe Rim Trail, which you can travel on foot, mountain bike, or enter for the Tahoe Triathlon at the end of this month! If you still have excess energy, I suggest spending your nights hitting Tahoe’s nightclubs and casinos—it’s a buzzing spot!

I loved the summer concert performances at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena, which attracted big names like Lady Gaga. Alternatively, you can try the free concerts at Lakeview Commons.

• Enjoying live music at a summer concert.
• Cycling along the paved trails took me past stunning mountain scenery and the gorgeous beaches.

7. Cannon Beach, Oregon

This place is an Instagrammer’s dream! Cannon Beach takes its name from a cannon washed ashore from the US schooner Shark that ran aground in 1846. I personally think all of Oregon’s beaches are picturesque, but this beach stood out to me for the striking 72-meter Haystack, which juts out of the ocean.

The rock is home to many nesting seabirds, such as tufted puffins and murres and at low tide, I recommend exploring the tidal pools at the base of the rock.

Surfing is popular here, and wildlife-watching is on nearby Ecola State Park trails. Although I didn’t spot any on my trip, bald eagles and Roosevelt elk reside here.

I found that the best weather comes towards the end of this month.

• Taking surfing lessons!
• Dining at the upbeat Mi Corazón Restaurant, where I dined on Latin cuisine.
• Hiking the Indian Beach Trail, which took me past gorgeous coastal scenery.

8. Stonington, Maine

I loved this tranquil gem! It has a population of around 1040 and an average temperature of 19°C this month. Stonington is a small but beautiful waterside city which was perfect for my low-key, relaxed summer break.

Bridges link Stonington and Deer Isle’s coastal towns to the mainland. Stonington is a quaint, scenic, and charming place. This month offers a cooler-weather summer break, perfect for those trying to escape the searing summer heat in other states. 

To immerse yourself in the lifestyle here, I recommend trying all the water activities, like boating, kayaking, and swimming, and also sampling locally sourced food, which is delicious!

I also suggest exploring the numerous art galleries, the charming local opera house, and the cute gift shops, I found plenty!

• Wandering around Main Street in Downtown where I found design shops, art galleries, and boutiques.
• Spending the day relaxing and swimming at DuBois Beach.
• I checked out the Mystic Seaport Museum , where I learned about the history of Stonington.

9. Portland, Oregon

I’ve spent a lot of time in Portland , and I honestly think it’s at its best in summer, which is also its peak tourist season. If you visit this month, you’ll also see the beautiful roses the city is famous for.

I recommend heading to the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park to see them and exploring the nearby Portland Japanese Garden !

I also love that many fun events are taking place this month, like the Pickathon Music Festival and the Soapbox Derby. The city also prides itself on bike-ability, so make sure you get involved in the annual Bridge Pedal.

This is a fun, family-friendly event and one of the world’s largest group pedaling events. Here, you can pedal streets closed to motor traffic.

If all that exercise has made you hungry, I recommend sampling food and craft beers at one of the many farmers’ markets or street fairs in the summer.

• Having fun at a summer music festival.

10. Glacier National Park, Montana

This one is for the nature lovers! This magnificent park is over 4000 square kilometers of forests and lakes and is traversed by sub-ranges of the Rockies. It is at its busiest this month, but in my opinion, the weather is ideal, making it a great time to visit.

It has been a resort area for over a century; the original hotels are now National Historic Landmarks. They were built to accommodate tourists coming to the Park via the Great Northern Railroad and the later “Going-to-the-Sun” road.

I recommend a night at the respected Many Glacier Hotel or Lake McDonald Lodge if you can afford it.

I also suggest going nature-watching, whether it is wildlife, birding or identifying some of the over 1100 floral species you’ll find here! If you are lucky, you’ll see the beargrass lilies in full bloom like I did!

• Driving along the incredible Going-to-the-Sun Road, one of the park’s most scenic journeys.
• Catching a sunrise at the hidden Two Medicine landmark which was an unforgettable experience.
• Going paddleboarding at Lake McDonald.

11. Berkshires, Massachusetts

This well-heeled spot comes alive in the summer months, and on my trip, I discovered mountains, nature, and premier cultural events. I particularly loved Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where artists of every genre have appeared, from Yo-yo Ma to Earth, Wind, and Fire.

I also highly recommend visiting art museums, like the Clark in Williamsburg, which has works by Rodin, Renoir, and Degas and impressive silver and ceramic collections. 

I also loved their scenic hiking trails, swimming in the numerous lakes, whitewater rafting and the fun ziplining!

• Watching a concert whilst enjoying a picnic under the stars at Tanglewood’s open-air venue.
• Hiking through Mount Greylock features the highest point in the state and great observation points.
• Going boating on Lake Onota. 

12. Blue Lakes, Colorado

I came here for the gorgeous summer hiking and wildflowers and wasn’t disappointed! Colorado is famous for its scenic trails, mostly the 900-km-long Colorado Trail, but my personal favorite was the Blue Lakes Trail, which was a separate route in the Mt Sneffels Wilderness area in Uncompahgre National Forest.

In my experience, even the drive to the trailhead is a worthy detour and has some seriously incredible views. You can traverse the whole trail or try a short hike to Lower Lake, which is 5 km from the trailhead and has campsites.

I found trying to reach the other two lakes more challenging, but I was rewarded with outstanding views and pretty wildflowers. Species such as Indian paintbrushes, campions, columbines, larkspur, and lupins grow along the trail from July to mid-August, so you’ll be in for a treat!

• Capturing Insta-worthy shots of the scenic views, flowers and lush surroundings.
• Soaking up the gorgeous sights overlooking the breathtaking turquoise lakes.
• Hiking the spectacular Blue Lakes Trail.

13. Beavers Bend Resort Park, Oklahoma

I think this is a great, family-friendly spot! Here, I went kayaking, hiking, and bike riding. I even went to arts and crafts classes and played bingo! 

I was also impressed with their 18-hole golf course, volleyball courts, and water skiing on Broken Bow Lake, which was also an excellent spot for scuba divers (the water in this area rarely gets above a bracing 15C).

I loved the nature documentaries screened in the evenings and stargazing in the clear, unpolluted skies. Leashed pets are also welcome, and some chalets are pet-friendly, too.

• Hiking the Friends Trail Loop and seeing incredible scenery.
• Renting a kayak on Broken Bow Lake.

14. Hot Springs, Arkansas

I loved spending a summer break in this Arkansas gem ! This is an extraordinary place where 47 springs on Hot Springs Mountain provide the town below with 1 million gallons of water daily at a steaming 62c or 143F temperature.

The springs are mineral-rich and rumored to be restorative, and I found no less than eight historic spas in Bathhouse Row, which are maintained by the National Park Service and their gardens. My favorite was Garvan Woodland Gardens, which has a photogenic Japanese section.

The resort’s popularity created a building boom, even during the Great Depression, and Hot Springs is nearly as famous as Miami for its Art Deco buildings. I just loved kicking back and relaxing here; it’s a special place!

• Hopping on the National Park Duck Tour which was a fun and unique way to explore Hot Springs.
• Checking out the entertainment-filled T-Rex Fun Spot.

15. Seabrook, Washington

Located in the North Beach area along the central Washington coast, in my opinion, this is one of the best vacation destination cities in Washington! 

The New Beach Town on the Washington Coast has about 450 newly built homes and 12 businesses; I love that it’s a small and pretty town without the bustle and rush of major city life.

The town is compact and walkable and was built to be a sustainable, urbanist community. I highly recommend parking your car and exploring the rest of the city on foot or a bicycle. The summer temperature averages 22°C, so this month’s weather is fine and comfortable.

I loved visiting the market, where I bought local crafts, Pacific Northwest food, and gift items, and visiting the numerous restaurants and bakeries for foodie treats.

16. Long Beach Island, New Jersey

Part of a set of barrier islands in front of the New Jersey coastline, I thought this was a stunning spot! For those looking for a quieter and more relaxing holiday, I highly recommend Long Beach as it differs from its brash southern neighbor.

The island itself is about 30 km long and only accessible via Route 72 from the mainland, which takes one through to Ship Bottom, roughly at the midpoint of the island.

Only 10,000 people reside there permanently, but the population increases tenfold in the summer months. Although the weather during this month can be hot, I love that the cool ocean breezes reduce the heat and humidity in the afternoons.

I personally think all the beaches are welcoming and beautiful. My favorites, though, were the Island Beach State Park near the Barnegat Lighthouse. I also loved visiting the historic maritime forests for bird-watching.

17. Seneca, South Carolina

This is my choice for a budget-friendly break! Owing to its low cost of living and high quality of life, I personally think Seneca, South Carolina, is an excellent choice for an alternative summer vacation away from the crowds.

The city is situated in the northwestern corner of South Carolina and enjoys a gorgeous position in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It has a population of 8368 and a hot climate of 32°C in this month.

I love the large stunning lake where you can go kayaking and boating, the cycling and hiking trails, the museums, and even the casinos. In my opinion, this place would suit couples, families, and friends seeking a different kind of vacation for the summer!

18. Block Island, Rhode Island

After I stepped off the ferry on Block Island, I felt all my tensions slipping away! Located South of Rhode Island, the island is predominantly a nature reserve, with only 1000 residents. Even at the height of summer, I love that the 25 km of beaches are still relatively uncrowded.

I loved sailing, swimming, and just lazing around on the beach. I would highly recommend visiting Cow Cove and the dramatic Mohegan Bluffs. I also suggest booking your ferry trip in advance, especially if you plan to take your car.

Unlike the southwest , which catches the rain now, the northeast coast this month has blue skies, warm waters and – at Arugam Bay particularly – good surf. Civil war ensured this region was largely off-limits until recently, so the coast is little-developed – you can still find an empty patch of sand at spots such as Nilaveli , Uppuveli and Passekudah . The center is also pretty dry in August, good for visiting the rock fortress of Sigiriya and spiritual hub Kandy , which bursts into noisy, colorful life during the Esala Perahera celebrations honoring the Sacred Tooth relic of Buddha each summer.

Cyclades, Greece

Why now? To swim between offbeat isles. 

Okay, we won’t lie: August across this magnificent Mediterranean archipelago is hardly castaway-quiet. The weather is too alluringly hot and sunny, and popular islands like party-central Mykonos and dreamy Santorini heave. However, smaller outposts – such as Schinousa, uninhabited Fidousa and craggy-coasted Iraklia – will be far less crowded. Plus, there’s a way to get away from everyone: jump in that crystal-clear blue sea. Book an open-water swimming holiday to hop between bays, coves and beaches under your own steam – rather than hordes of tourists, you’ll see sea caves, rock arches, towering cliffs, and colorful fish.

Allemansrätt is an amazing thing. Why now? For natural and cultural festivities in Africa’s little culture capital. 

Landlocked eSwatini (known until 2018 as Swaziland) has all the animal allure you’d expect from a wild tract of southern Africa and August is the height of the dry season. There are 17 game-packed protected areas spread across this pocket-sized nation’s bushveld, highveld and subtropical forests – ranger-led walks in Hlane Royal National Park are a particular thrill. But arguably it’s the human interactions here that’ll leave the greatest impression. Ruled by one of the world’s last remaining absolute monarchs, eSwatini has a uniquely well-preserved cultural heritage, displayed in most dazzling fashion in late August or early September at the Umhlanga Reed Dance (this year's falls on September 4, so extend your trip until then). This huge-scale event at Ludzidzini sees up to 40,000 exuberant, brightly dressed girls dance before the king and the queen mother, accompanied by poker-faced warriors. It’s an unmatched eruption of swaying, singing, color and noise.

Buenos Aires, Argentina 

Why now? Learn to tango in the home of the world’s sexiest dance.

Nowhere else are a city and a dance so inextricably linked. Tango is, simply, the heartbeat of Buenos Aires , and the Argentine capital’s passion for both the music – exemplified by the songs of Carlos Gardel, which still waft out of many a window – and the dance never seems to diminish. The cool month of August isn’t just a wonderful time to visit BA : it also sees the city fling itself into its annual Festival de Tango, with performances and concerts by the finest exponents. At other times, you can enjoy more or less touristy (but usually high-caliber) tango shows at various clubs and theaters, or simply watch the weekly Sunday sessions in Plaza Dorrego . Singapore is a hot and tasty prospect year-round. Since it’s practically on the equator, it’s always warm here, while the food scene – from Michelin-starred to street stalls – is always delicious. August, when local school holidays are over and rain is scarce, can be especially mouthwatering. There’s a growing focus on thinking local and sustainable, too, with a resurgence in the popularity of the city’s hawker market culture and comfort food faves ( laksa , hokkien mee rice, fried kway teow noodles), young “hawkerpreneur” chefs adding hipness to the traditional scene and attempts to tackle food-waste issues. Portland, Oregon 

Why now? To eat and drink outside.

The Pacific Northwest is notorious for its damp, misty weather. However, your best bet for a break with less drizzle is in August: it’s one of the region’s hottest, driest months, and ideal for soaking up Portland ’s alfresco summer food scene. At this time of year it’s all about exploring the distinct neighborhoods , hanging out on patios and plazas, grazing from food trucks, browsing farmers markets, supping at microbreweries (there are around 70 in town) and scootering between award-winning baristas. Indeed, Portland has more roasters and cafes per capita than any other city in the USA – coffee is treated as seriously as wine here. A java crawl might include rock-star roasters Stumptown, an iced cold brew at Courier and a cuppa at Bison, the city’s only Native American–owned coffee shop.

Where are the best places to travel to in August for adventure?

Caucasus, Georgia & Armenia 

Why now? Hike a spectacular, sustainable trail.

When completed, the Transcaucasian Trail will be a monster – a marvelous 3000km (1864-mile) monster, streaking across the little-visited mountains of Georgia and Armenia , from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea. The project, begun in 2015, aims to safeguard the nature and culture of the Caucasus by creating a world-class hiking route and developing sustainable-tourism initiatives along the way. Trekkers will be able to follow centuries-old shepherds’ tracks, visit monasteries and medieval villages, stay in family guesthouses, feast on home-cooked dishes and raise a glass (or three) of excellent local wine. Hundreds of kilometers have already been mapped, including the full north–south crossing of Armenia, via the peaks of Azhdahak and Khustup, Lakes Arpi and Sevan , the national parks of Dilijan and Arevi, and the canyons of Dzoraget and Debed. A section through Georgia’s Upper Svaneti is ready, too, where the high-altitude passes aren’t snow-free until July.

Flinders Ranges, South Australia

Why now? Cool weather for walking.

The craggy, saw-toothed Flinders Ranges in South Australia  are venerable indeed. Formed over 600 million years, they’re home to some of the oldest multi-cellular fossils on earth – the region’s Nilpena Ediacara National Park, designated in 2021, is arguably the world’s richest and most intact paleontological site. Also, human activity here dates back 49,000 years, with Aboriginal stories seemingly woven around every rock and outcrop. August is a good time to plot your own Flinders walkabout: there’s more rain, but it fills the creeks and pools, attracting wildlife. Animals are more active during the cooler winter days, too – hikers might find themselves strolling with yellow-footed rock wallabies, emus, grey kangaroos and flocks of galahs. The rugged northern section of the 1200km (750-mile) Heysen Trail (which starts on the south coast) cuts through the region, finishing at Parachilna Gorge, winding via Mt Remarkable, Alligator Gorge and the crater-like bowl of Ikara (Wilpena Pound). Truly epic hiking country .
