We tested 14 masks by assessing their materials, sleeping with them for at least two nights each, and evaluating their fit on a variety of face shapes and head sizes. We found three options—a silky-smooth crowd-pleaser , a padded memory-foam mask , and a lightweight contoured mask —that are well made, comfortable all night, and excellent at blocking out light.

What we looked for

First and foremost, we focused on sleep masks that were adept at creating total darkness.

We asked several people with a variety of face and nose shapes to wear the masks we chose.

The mask lies directly on your face, so the softer it is, the better. We preferred masks made of soft, breathable material.

A good sleep mask blocks out most light, but a great sleep mask feels so good you forget you’re wearing it.

The research

Wirecutter has been researching and testing sleep masks since 2017. For this guide, we did the following:

• We interviewed a sleep medicine specialist and representatives from sleep mask companies. We also read multiple sleep-mask-related scientific studies to learn more about the benefits of wearing sleep masks at night.
• We researched more than 50 sleep masks from a sea of similar models, evaluating customer reviews on Amazon and articles on sleep masks to determine which models to test.
• We tested 14 masks, assessing their ability to block out light, the feel of their materials, the quality of their construction, and their general adjustability for different head and face shapes.

If you need to block out light from your sleep environment, a sleep mask can help. If you already use one (whether a freebie from a long-haul flight or an old bandana), it might be time to upgrade to one of our picks. Airline masks or bedazzled models—think Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (video) —are typically not well designed (allowing light to creep in at the edges), or they’re so uncomfortable you may toss it off in the middle of the night.

The overhead lights in our homes, the street lights, and the glow from laptops, phones, and televisions have skyrocketed our average daily exposure to light, said Dr. Fariha Abbasi-Feinberg , a sleep doctor and spokesperson for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Over a third of Americans (PDF) report that outdoor or indoor light disrupts their sleep. Light exposure at night can make it harder to initially fall asleep and can cause you to wake up during the night, disrupting your transitions between your sleep cycles and degrading your overall quality of sleep. Creating a pitch-dark sleep environment can be hard to do, especially if you’re a frequent traveler or night-shift worker. Sleep masks are an affordable way to tackle that problem, and new research has even shown that wearing one at night helps with memory consolidation, the ability to learn, and alertness the next day. Sleep masks don’t cure insomnia (for that, we recommend speaking with your physician), but they should help you get better sleep.

Alaska Bear Natural Silk Sleep Mask

A silken exterior material, a flat design, and an adjustable strap make this mask a fit for almost any face, but it puts pressure on the eyes.

How it feels: This mask is silky smooth and breathable, so it doesn’t get hot when pressed against your skin all night.

Why it’s great

It was popular among all testers, regardless of sleep style. The Alaska Bear Natural Silk Sleep Mask is comfortable, soft, and lightweight. All of our testers (whether back-, side-, or stomach-sleepers) had something that they liked about this mask, and it performed better than average in every testing consideration, including fit, adjustability, and comfort. If you’ve worn a traditional sleep mask before, this silk-lined style will feel familiar but remarkably more comfortable and softer on your skin.

It’s especially great for stomach-sleepers. Our testers who sleep on their stomach found that the convex sleep masks crumpled when their face made contact with their pillow, impeding their sleep. The Alaska Bear sleep mask, on the other hand, stays flush, even when sandwiched between a pillow and your face. Both sides of the mask design are lined with mulberry silk, which remains breathable even when pressed against the skin.

It fits a range of faces and blocks light well. This silk mask is a good choice if convex sleep masks don’t suit your face or sleep style. The Alaska Bear sleep mask’s flat design fits nearly all face shapes and nose types. Even though this mask doesn’t seal around your face like our more structured picks, all of our testers reported that it did a decent job of blocking out light.

The adjustable strap is barely noticeable. Testers liked that you can adjust the strap with a small plastic buckle that didn’t bother back-sleepers and rarely got tangled in longer or curlier hair. One tester, who tried the Alaska Bear sleep mask in 2020 and again in 2024, said that “the mask stays on really well, as long as you tighten the strap every couple of nights.”

Flaws but not dealbreakers

• This mask may slip off during the night. Some of our testers who preferred a looser and less-snug fit found that the mask slipped around and fell off in the middle of the night. Those testers are likely better suited to a convex cup, anyway.
• The adjustable strap may be too thin for some. A couple of testers noted that the strap felt scratchy against the sensitive skin behind their ears. To fix this problem, they adjusted the strap higher on their head, which made the mask slip off in their sleep.
• It is hand-wash only. Like the Mzoo Sleep Mask and the Nidra Deep Rest Eye Mask, our pick from Alaska Bear is hand-wash only, so you can’t simply throw it in the washing machine to clean it.

Mzoo Sleep Mask

A smooth, contoured eye mask.

Soft, structured, and contoured, this mask stays on all night and prevents any light from seeping through.

Best for: This model suits side- and back-sleepers who need a little space between the mask and their eyes.

How it feels: This mask is soft against the skin and roomy around the eyes, and it drops the world into complete darkness the moment you put it on.

It stays in place all night. Even the side-sleepers on our testing panel, who noted that sleep masks don’t always work with their preferred sleep position, found that this mask stayed on throughout the night. One tester noted that the mask didn’t let light in around the nose bridge, even when they laid on their side.

It fully blocks light. One tester described this mask as “perfect for a nap in a sunny window.” It fully shuts out all light, whether you’re trying to sleep in broad sun or just need to stifle residual light at night.

Its padded, goggle-like design is especially comfortable. The Mzoo Sleep Mask’s eyecups have a convex gap so your eyes can open and close. That gap is surrounded by a memory foam padding that rests on the perimeter of your eye sockets. The effect is such that you don’t feel like your eyes are being forced closed, but there is a bit of compression near your temples, eyebrows, and cheekbones. Our testers found this sensation soothing. “They feel more like putting on goggles than a sleep mask, but they are sure to get the job done,” one tester said. Another liked how the contour of the eyecup kept the mask from brushing against their eyelashes, which makes it a good choice for people who wear eyelash extensions.

It’s adjustable. This mask is equipped with an adjustable plastic slider that ensures a snug fit for all head sizes and shapes. Only one tester thought that it was still slightly too big even after fastening it as tightly as the strap would allow.

• The compression of the memory foam is not for everyone. Of all our testers, only one didn’t like this mask—and they really didn’t like it. They found the contoured memory-foam design applied too much pressure to their orbital bone and eye socket.
• It’s expensive. The Mzoo mask costs about $30, which is a far cry from the free masks handed out on airplanes. However, it’s often on sale for around $20, which is about the same price as our other pick, the Nidra Deep Rest Eye Mask .
• It’s hand-wash only. Like our other picks, this mask is hand-wash only. Since it presses somewhat tightly against the face, you may need to clean it more often than our other picks.

Nidra Deep Rest Eye Mask

A lightweight, roomy option.

Lightweight and contoured, this mask fits comfortably and blocks light well for a wide variety of face shapes. Its deep eyecups allow your eyes to flutter during sleep.

Best for: This mask will appeal to side- and back-sleepers who don’t want any added pressure to their eyes.

How it feels: This model is lightweight and roomy, and it rests gently on your face.

It has a lightweight, barely there feel. The polyester-covered, elastic-band Nidra Deep Rest Eye Mask has deep, wide cups that gently sit upon your eyes without applying any pressure (like our pick from Mzoo does). The Nidra sleep mask’s cavernous design leaves ample room for your eyes to move while you sleep , no matter how tightly you adjust its headband.

The design accommodates different face shapes. Spanning temple to temple on most faces, the Nidra mask covers more surface area than all the other sleep masks we tested, and it features a wider nose-bridge shape. This gap slopes gently without being too rigid, so it conforms to many more nose shapes, from narrow and arched noses with bridges to wider, flatter noses without bridges. The adjustable strap, which was redesigned in 2023 from a velcro closure to a plastic slider, secures a snug fit without snagging on hair.

It blocks light well. Because the mask is wide from temple to temple, testers reported that it did a great job keeping them in total darkness. One tester, who self-identified as having a small face and a big nose, found that all other masks let in a little light around the nose bridge, whereas the Nidra sleep mask did not.

• The material isn’t as soft as our other picks. A few testers noted that the mask had rougher edges around the eyecups that felt abrasive against their skin and made this mask too uncomfortable to wear all night.
• The mask design is polarizing. The extra-wide eyecups and sloped nose bridge worked for most testers, but not all. One tester noted that the mask didn’t sit flush against their face, and instead dug in at awkward spots and created little pressure points that were distracting throughout the night. Some testers preferred the Alaska Bear Natural Silk Sleep Mask for its silky material and more-universal fit.
• It’s not for stomach-sleepers (and some side-sleepers). If you sleep face-down, you likely won’t benefit from the Nidra mask’s raised eyecups because half of your face will be pressed against your pillow anyway. Some side-sleepers noticed that the mask tended to pucker out at the sides instead of lying flat.
• It’s hand-wash only. Like our other picks, this mask can’t go in the washing machine.

In evaluating sleep masks, we looked for:

Light-blocking abilities: A good sleep mask blocks out most light, even if the sun is shining directly in your face.

A comfortable feel for all-night wear: Because the mask lies directly on your face, the softer and less noticeable it is, the better. We looked out for breathable materials like silk, which feels gentle against your eyelids yet keeps your face from getting too hot on swampy nights. Masks should also be lightweight (ideally no more than 1.5 ounces) but sturdy enough to hold their shape.

An adjustable strap: The strap should be able to fit heads of all sizes and shapes. Most mask straps rely on Velcro or a plastic fastener to create a snug fit. Our testers typically preferred buckled straps, which were less likely to get tangled in one’s hair.

Convex eyecups: Sleep masks that offer some space between your eyelids and the mask give your eyes room to move or flutter . Most testers found this type of design more comfortable than flat-style masks that felt heavy on their eyelids and lashes. If you don’t like that sensation or tend to fall asleep with your makeup still on, a convex, cup-style sleep mask is the way to go.

Versatile design: Sleep masks should suit a variety of face and nose shapes. We disqualified any options that bunched up on more-pronounced noses or let in too much light on flatter ones.

Durable and washable: Nightly wear causes unsavory levels of skin oils and eye gunk to build up on the underside of the mask. We considered masks that could stand up to frequent machine- or hand-washing.

In our most recent round of testing in 2024, we considered six masks and assessed their quality and versatility before sending them to a group of eight panelists to try at home. Each tester slept with each mask for at least one night and evaluated their performance based on comfort, ability to block out light, and whether or not they stayed on all night.

If you know you want a sleep mask for traveling or sitting upright: Consider the Manta Sleep Mask , which features two removable doughnut-shaped eyecups that you can Velcro onto the mask for a more precise fit. We found its eyecups, however, pressed uncomfortably against the face while our testers were sleeping on their side or stomach. The soft fabric of the mask felt less breathable than the foam or silk of our picks, and the material was uncomfortable in warm weather.

If you have a larger head: The Bucky 40 Blinks Sleep Mask is almost indistinguishable from the Nidra Deep Rest Eye Mask, save for a slightly stiffer foam build and a wider Velcro strap. Its accommodating strap offers a marginally better fit for larger heads than that of our pick from Nidra, though this also means the Bucky sleep mask’s strap forms a more noticeable bump behind your head. The mask’s V-shaped cutout, which is meant to go around the nose, is a little stiff and less malleable than that of the Nidra sleep mask. But if you have a larger head and prefer a mask with eyecups, the Bucky sleep mask may be a better choice.

We tested two other masks from Alaska Bear. The Alaska Bear 2-Strap Natural Silk Sleep Mask is a flat design like the one we recommend, but with the addition of a second strap and a flap of silk that can cover your nose. The double strap was hard to adjust, especially while half-asleep in the middle of the night. The nose baffle, meanwhile, barely prevented light from leaking in.

The Alaska Bear Memory Foam Sleep Mask is made of plush memory foam with indentations around the eyes, which initially seemed like a good compromise between flat and contoured masks. Our testers found that the mask blocked all visible light and was very comfortable to wear while they were sitting up—but when they slept on their stomach or side, the plush sides of the mask compressed uncomfortably.

The BeeVines Silk Sleep Mask (pack of two) is a flat, silk sleep mask. Although the material itself was soft against the skin, most testers didn’t like this mask—it’s small, doesn’t block light very well, and the adjustable plastic slider strap was too thin and pinched the skin behind their ears.

No one found the Bedtime Bliss Sleep Mask particularly comfortable during testing. Although it seems to be the spitting image of the Nidra Deep Rest Eye Mask , its smaller size and sharper nose contour make it less comfortable to wear.

The Brooklinen Mulberry Silk Eyemask was the softest mask we’ve tested, and it felt luxurious to the touch. But, many testers, even those with small faces, noted that it felt too tight, and it slipped off in the middle of the night.

The Freshme Cotton Sleep Mask wraps around your head and is made from 95% cotton and 5% spandex. Testers really liked the immersive experience of this mask, but the cotton can get hot. This mask would be a great option for sleeping on planes, trains, and buses, but wearing it all night might have you waking up in sweats.

Slip’s Sleep Mask is a fancy-looking mask that arrives in an even fancier case. The mask felt impressively smooth to the touch, but it has a scrunchie-like band instead of adjustable buckles or Velcro, and it felt much too small even for those with small heads.

The makers of the PrettyCare 3D Sleep Mask (pack of two) boast about the mask’s “large eye cavities” in its Amazon description, but we found that the mask had shallow cups. Our initial testers found the mask uncomfortable, and no one picked it as a favorite.

The Earth Therapeutics R.E.M Sleep Eye Mask is similar to the old, Velcro version of the Nidra sleep mask and has large convex eyecups and a gentle nose bridge. But the polyurethane foam and polyester material feels cheap and itchy against the skin.

Designed for travel, the Trtl Glimpse Sleep Mask has a fabric flap that you can pull up to “take a peek” without taking the mask off and letting in bright light. It’s a fun feature, but the entire mask was rather bulky, and it slipped easily.

Similar to the Trtl sleep mask, the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Sleep Mask had heat and fit issues. A bouffant of velour-like memory foam, the mask felt heavy and needed to be tightened too much to prevent slipping. And the fabric made it too hot for comfort.

Blindfolds made of polyester will be the most lightweight and durable. They also feel naturally cooler than other materials. However, breathability could be an issue, as well as staining. If you get something that’s made out of polyester, opt for black.

Gels and Beads

Some eye covers have gel and bead interiors. Look for these if you want to experience any heating and cooling effects. They’re also adept at reducing eye swelling and puffiness, and in helping you to regulate your body temperature if you tend to sleep cool or warm during the night.

Getting the right amount of quality sleep is a top priority, so choosing an eye mask that delivers on comfort is key. The position you sleep in will drastically affect how you feel about a brand.

For example, side sleepers should get a slim and sleek design that won’t put pressure on the side of their face. They should check to see if the adjustable straps include a buckle and make sure that the hardware can be situated at the back of the head and not at the side.

Back sleepers might want something that has more space between the top of the mask and the eye cavity. This is because the effects of gravity can apply too much pressure on the top of the face.

Most people agree that to be comfortable, their mask needs to be lightweight. There are also options to get aromatherapy-infused covers that increase comfort and relaxation levels. Yet another choice is to have holes in the eye cavities.

For people who might want to have their eyes open and not see any light, they’ll want to try this type. However, sometimes the holes can be uncomfortable, especially if there’s any stitching that can feel scratchy.

There are few factors to consider when it comes to how the mask fits on your face. The first is the overall size. Some sleep covers can take up most of your face. Some people find that comforting, while others find it claustrophobic.

The other thing to look at is whether there is a strap in the back that stretches and whether there’s a way to adjust it for a custom fit.

Putting them in the washing machine can compromise the stitching, and the same goes for a heated dryer. If you’re concerned about odor, dry your mask in the sun. Sunlight is a natural odor killer, and it’s anti-microbial as well. Plus, have you smelled sunshine? It’s divine.

Are there Negative Effects to Wearing Sleep Masks?

The benefits of sleep masks are tremendous, but there are a few drawbacks. We don’t think it’s anything significant, but we’d be negligent if we didn’t at least mention some things to look out for.

If your mask is too tight, it can cause undue pressure on your face and eyes. This can lead to a variety of issues, including an eye infection, ingrown eyelashes, and irritated skin. Make sure that you keep your cover clean and resist the urge to overtighten it.

Sleep masks make sleeping in bright conditions easier—whether you’re taking a long-haul flight , sleeping outdoors , or trying to avoid jetlag. Some people even use sleep masks for meditation. The Bedtime Bliss Sleep Mask is a unique type of sleep mask that is contoured to reduce pressure on the eyes. It has developed a pretty extensive cult following in the world of products specifically designed to get you a better night’s sleep , but I wanted to test its accolades for myself. I wore the sleep mask to bed for several nights to see if it lives up to its claims. Read on for all the dreamy details.

Design: Specially contoured for less eye pressure

The real appeal of the Bedtime Bliss Sleep Mask is the contoured design, which doesn’t put pressure on your eyes as some other masks can. Besides being more comfortable on the eyes, the design allows you to wear it without ruining your eye makeup, which makes it a great travel accessory and perfect for quick naps between events.

The mask is adjustable via an adhesive strap in the back and designed to fit men, women, and children. I found it to fit well without adjusting the strap, which is a good thing because when the sides of the adhesive material aren’t perfectly lined up, strands of my hair got caught up in it. If you have very short hair, this won’t be a problem. Otherwise, it can pull and tangle your hair, which is somewhat painful.

The fabric is made of polyester, and while it’s not as silky soft as other sleep masks I’ve tried, it still feels nice on the skin.

The only real negative I found with the design is that there is less room for error when it comes to the mask slipping during the night. If it does slip, you’ll find it lopsided on your face and the contours not lined up properly, which is more noticeable than with a traditional sleep mask. 

The Bedtime Bliss Sleep Mask is available in a small range of plain colors: there’s the black I tested, as well as pink, red, turquoise, and a darker jet black. Compared to other sleep masks, this one makes you look a little bug-eyed when you’re wearing it, but what it lacks in aesthetics, it makes up for in its effectiveness. The sleep mask also comes with a small carrying case for transporting it, as well as a set of Moldex earplugs, making it the perfect product to take on a trip.

Performance: Blocks light

The award-winning design seems perfect, but how does it really fare when you’re trying to catch up on sleep? I found that it did indeed work as expected. Not only did it completely block out light like a good sleep mask needs to do, but due to the contour, I was able to completely open my eyes underneath it. This may or may not be a feature you are looking for in a sleep mask, but if you’ve tried traditional models in the past and found them uncomfortable, this one is a great alternative.

The sleep mask did slip slightly during the night, and because of the contours, I found it slightly uncomfortable when it did so. Tightening the strap may have prevented this, but I preferred the mask slipping to getting my hair caught.

Comfort: Easy to wear

The fabric is made of polyester, and while it’s not as silky soft as other silk sleep masks I’ve tried, it still feels nice on the skin. The Bedtime Bliss Sleep Mask is more densely padded than other masks—with a polyurethane foam inner material—and most of that padding is concentrated around the orbital bone to keep the mask off the eyes. The cut edges of the mask are slightly rough, but I found that I couldn’t feel this part while wearing the mask at night. The contoured nature actually made this mask more comfortable overall than other sleep masks I’ve tried.

Price: Very affordable

The Bedtime Bliss Sleep Mask retails for about $13. This is right in the range of other contoured eye masks, and the price seems about right, especially considering it also includes a carrying pouch and earplugs making it a handy travel accessory . Even traditional, flat sleep masks sell for about the same.

Not only did the mask completely block out light, but I was also able to completely open my eyes underneath.

Bedtime Bliss Sleep Mask vs. Alaska Bear Natural Silk Sleep Mask

The Alaska Bear Natural Silk Sleep Mask looks more like the sleep masks you’re probably used to seeing, and I tested it as well. Alaska Bear’s mask feels much softer than the Bedtime Bliss Sleep Mask, but it doesn’t solve the problem of keeping the sleep mask off the eyes. 

If you can’t get used to the feeling of a sleep mask covering your eyes or you want to protect your eye makeup, stick with Bedtime Bliss. But if you don’t mind the feeling, I recommend the Alaska Bear sleep mask for its silky material and comfortable wear. Plus, it sells for a few dollars cheaper and is available in over 25 colors and designs.

The Bedtime Bliss Sleep Mask blocks light, is comfortable to wear, and solves one of the biggest problems with this product category: uncomfortable pressure against your eyes and lashes while you sleep.

The 8 Best Sleep Masks I’ve Found For Light Blocking

Light: can’t live without it, can’t sleep with it. So in those less than pitch black situations, a sleep mask can give you control over the balance between the light and dark.

I’ve tested many sleep masks in the years since starting this website and regularly try new ones. I use them when flying (on a plane, not in my superhero outfit), and if I need to sleep during the daytime.

I also ask my partner to test them to get a second opinion. She has long hair and prefers not to have to untangle it from the straps in the morning, so little details like the quality of the strap design matter to her.

In this review, I’ll be looking at three main styles: flat sleep masks that are practical for all sleep positions, contoured masks with more space for your eyelids and eyelashes, and weighted sleep masks that can be cooled beforehand.

I used all eight sleep masks naturally over the course of a year, as well as doing specific tests in the same light and bedroom conditions to get a clear idea of how they compare.

Alaska Bear

The Alaska Bear was the best sleep mask overall when I tested them in the same conditions and is currently my personal favorite. It has just the right balance of feeling soft and comfortable, blocking out light well in all sleep positions, and being reasonably priced. It’s made with a thin layer of silk on the outside and cotton fill on the inside, and I found I could comfortably wear it when sleeping on my side, front, and back. The strap is elastic and has a subtle adjustable slider buckle, with no velcro in sight. The one caveat is that it won’t be right if you need contours or cavities for your eyelashes because it sits flat over the eyes.

If you need some space for your eyelashes and eyelids to move around, the Manta is my top pick of the contoured sleep masks. It has very deep eye cups that can even be removed and repositioned to fit your facial features. The external material is soft to the touch, and the adjustable strap comes with reinforced elastic and micro hooks that are less likely to catch in your hair. I found it blocks out light very effectively when lying on my back. However, when lying on my side or front, I can feel the thick foam pressing against my face.

The Mavogel is the most comfortable cotton sleep mask I’ve tried. It feels soft and is very breathable, so it’s usable all year around. I particularly liked how it has a bendable nose piece to minimise light intrusion around the nose. The mask is made with a standard elastic strap and adjustable slider buckle. It does a good job of blocking out light when you’re lying on your back or side, but the nose piece might need some adjustment if you’re on your front.

The Medi Grade isn’t officially medical grade, despite its name. However, it’s designed with gentle memory foam contours, allowing some freedom for your eyelids and eyelashes. Although it’s made from synthetic material, I found it to be surprisingly soft and comfy. The mask comes with an elastic strap as well as velcro for a snug fit, and it does a solid job of blocking out light. I think it’s another one that works best if you’re on your back, as lying on your side or front can make the foam more noticeable against your face.

The Barmy is my top choice of the weighted sleep masks. It weighs 0.8 pounds and provides gentle pressure around the eyes. You can also cool it in the fridge or freezer in the zip-lock bag it comes with. Personally, I like the combination of cooling and pressure, but I imagine it won’t be for everyone. When lying on your back, the light blocking is excellent, thanks to the beads that adapt to the shape of your face. However, its bulkiness can be less practical when lying on your side or front, making it perhaps more suited for short naps or relaxation sessions.

The Imak is another weighted sleep mask, but it’s more compact than the Barmy in both surface area and weight, at 0.5 lbs. The exterior is made from soft cotton, and it feels more breathable than the Barmy. It can also be cooled beforehand if you enjoy that. I find the Imak has excellent light blocking when lying on my back or side and is comfortable to wear in those positions. However, all the beads make it quite bulky, so it’s not ideal if you lie on your front as you’ll feel a lump on the side of your face.

Jersey Slumber

The Jersey Slumber has a similar shape and design to the Alaska Bear. while it looks good initially, the material doesn’t feel quite as soft though. The cut was also slightly different, and I didn’t find it to be as effective in blocking light when lying on my back. It was better on my side and front when I adjusted the position. On the plus side, it felt comfortable in all sleeping positions due to the lightweight material, thin elastic strap, and small slider buckle.

Bedtime Bliss

The Bedtime Bliss was the least effective of the contoured sleep masks when I tried them in the same light conditions. However, that may be partly down to the fact that it doesn’t have a very flexible design, so it may fit some people’s facial structure better than mine (or my partner who wasn’t so impressed either). The eye cavities aren’t as deep as the Manta, it has a synthetic feel, and is hand wash only. So other than the low price, it wasn’t one either of us will be using again in a hurry.

Table 1: Ratings

In table 1 below, I’ve given each sleep mask a score out of 10 in some key areas: how well they block light and how comfortable they are to wear in different sleep positions.

I wore each sleep mask for several consecutive nights to get a good idea of how comfortable they feel and how effective they are. I also asked my partner for her opinion before deciding on the scores.

The light blocking is based on two tests I did: how well they blocked out some daylight shining through the curtains in my bedroom at the same time of the day; and how well they blocked out my partner’s reading light in the nighttime.

The reason some of them have lower scores on your side or front is that the bulkier design raises the mask when you put the weight of your head on the side of the sleep mask.

The comfort score is based on several points combined: the softness of the material; the fit around the eyes and nose; and whether the strap or buckle press into your head.

The prices sometimes fluctuate throughout the year, so I thought it would be useful to provide a snapshot of the base prices on one day so you can see the price range you might expect to pay for a sleep mask. These prices were accurate on the day of my last article update – April 22, 2024.

In the video below, I take a close up look at all the sleep masks in this article, with a focus on the design, materials, strap style, comfort, and light-blocking effectiveness. I also wear them in different sleeping positions so you can see how they look when worn in bed.

1. Alaska Bear

The best silk sleep mask. Ideal if you want one that’s comfortable to wear in all sleep positions.

The Alaska Bear is currently my personal favorite for one key reason: it has the best balance between light blocking and being comfortable to use in any sleeping position.

It doesn’t have contours, so if you need space for long eyelashes it might not be the one for you. But if you’re not worried about that and you’re a side or front sleeper like me, this is a very effective little sleep mask.

Materials and design

When I bought it, it came in a basic plastic wrapper with a little mesh bag that you can fold the mask tightly into. The mask is made from very soft mulberry silk on both sides, with some light cotton padding on the inside. It feels breathable to use, which is good in hot weather. I tried several other masks that looked just like this one, but none felt as soft.

The stitching is neat and feels robust, but like most sleep masks it’s hand wash only to keep it in good condition.

Strap style and size

The strap is made from simple nylon elastic, with a thin plastic adjuster. Many sleep masks have this type of adjuster and I don’t find they irritate my skin or snag hair. The adjustable strap means it will fit head sizes of 15.8 to 27.6 inch circumference.

How well it blocks light

When I lie on my back, most of the light is blocked out, though some tiny slithers appear around the nose unless I tighten the strap. Personally, I prefer to keep it a bit looser because the light blocking is more than good enough when I close my eyes.

The main benefit is that I can lie on my side or front and still have excellent light blocking. And importantly, I can change positions without the mask sliding out of place as much as I find with many contoured sleep masks.

Overall, the balance of price, comfort, and light blocking, as well as the flexibility to use it in any sleeping position, makes the Alaska Bear a great choice. Just be aware that it doesn’t have contours, so it lies flat against your eyelashes and eyelids.

The Alaska Bear sleep mask is reasonably priced. You can usually find it for under £10 in the UK or under $10 dollars in the US.

The best contoured sleep mask, with deep eye cups that allow plenty of space for your eyes and eyelashes.

The Manta is one of the largest sleep masks, and kind of looks like it belongs more with a superhero outfit than pajamas. However, it’s also a very effective sleep mask. It’s comfortable to use because of the soft material, it has very deep eye sockets, and provides superb light blocking.

It comes in a sturdy box that can be recycled, with a mesh carry bag, and conveniently it can be machine washed.

What makes the Manta unique is that the eye cups can be repositioned to match your facial structure. The cups are made from soft foam with modal fabric on the outside that feels very soft on the skin. At 0.71 inches deep, they’re the biggest eye cavities I’ve seen in a sleep mask.

The strap is very sturdy with reinforced elastic that’s much stronger than the thinner nylon straps of many masks, and a micro hook fastening system on the back that doesn’t snag hair like basic velcro does. The company says it will suit head circumferences between 15 and 20 inches.

Below, you can see the Manta sleep mask, the mesh carry case, and box it came in.

I really like the Manta if I’m just having a nap on my back because it blocks out 100% of even the brightest light. I don’t need to faff around to find the perfect position either. I just lie down, put it on and the light’s gone. It feels very comfortable to wear and the foam cups put minimal pressure on my face.

If I lie on my side, I do find some light creeps in around the nose though, which is very common with sleep masks. A more important issue when you’re on your side is that the foam feels a bit lumpy on the side of your face. It’s not uncomfortable, but it is noticeable. And when you lie on your front it’s even more noticeable.

The manta sleep mask could be an excellent choice for people who sleep on their back and need the most space possible for their eyelids or eyelashes. Some people will be okay with it on their side too, but side or front sleepers are taking a bit of a risk with this one and a simpler mask with less engineering might be better.

The Manta is one of the more expensive sleep masks I’ve tried, costing between £30 and £40 pounds in the UK, and also between $35 and $40 in the US or Canada.

The best cotton sleep mask, with a bendable nose cartilage to help block out light.

If you’d like a soft sleep mask that’s made of cotton rather than silk, the Mavogel could be one to try. A key feature is that it has a bending cartilage around the nose area, which is good for blocking out the slithers of light that tend to creep in.

The Mavogel came in a neatly presented cardboard box. However, the mask itself was inside a fabric bag, with a plastic wrapper and an extra carry case. So including the Amazon box, that’s five layers, which isn’t the most eco-friendly.

The exterior of the mask is cotton and feels soft, with cotton filler and a thin sponge layer around the outside. That stops it from pressing into your eyes as much as some of the thinner masks do.

It’s more breathable than the thicker foam masks, but not as breathable as the thin silk ones, like the Alaska Bear. Inside the nose piece, there’s a thin bendable piece of metal that feels about the width of a paperclip, but it’s more flexible. It means you can bend it over your nose to help block out even more light and it works quite well.

Below, you can see the Mavogel sleep mask, the case, and packaging (which seemed a bit excessive to me).

The strap is elastic, with a standard plastic buckle, and it will fit head sizes from 19 to 29 inches. The stitching is reasonably good so I imagine it will last a good length of time, as long as the elastic isn’t stretched to its max a lot.

When I’m on my back, I can get nearly 100% light blocking with the Mavogel if I get the nose cartilage in the right place, and that’s good enough for me when I have my eyes closed too.

When I lie on my side or front, the light blocking can be good too. But I often need to readjust it when I change positions if I’m still awake otherwise I do notice the light around the nose bouncing off the light grey material.

If you have sinus problems or a sensitive nose you might want to avoid this one because of the way the cartilage lies against your skin. Otherwise, I think the Mavogel is a good sleep mask if you prefer flatter designs over contoured ones and would rather have cotton than silk on the exterior.

It currently sells for just under £9 in the UK, and just under $10 in the US and Canada.

Gentle contours and excellent light blocking.

The Medi Grade has a contoured design, with memory foam that creates space for the eyelids and eyelashes to move around. But what I like most about it is that the nose piece is really well designed, and it meant that I could get 100% light blocking on my front, my side, or my back, which is quite unusual for a sleep mask.

However, despite how amazing the light blocking is, I do have a bit of a love-hate relationship with this one.

My main criticism of the Medi Grade is that it came with loads of bits and pieces that I just didn’t use. The recyclable cardboard box and useful carry case are fine. But the not very good earplugs, the two plastic earplug carry boxes, the carabiner, and a bag with five hair clips felt superfluous, especially for me with my lack of long hair.

As for the mask, I really like the design and the shape though. It molds well to my face, and the material that sits over the nose is comfortable and very effective. I couldn’t find any information in the packaging or online about the exact materials used. It has a soft but slightly synthetic feel and is less breathable than the silk masks, and it’s hand wash only.

Below, you can see how many bits and pieces came with the Medi Grade sleep mask. Perhaps you’ll use them all. Personally, the hair bands don’t suit my short hair!

The strap is a combination of elastic and velcro and seems robust, but if you have a large head there will be quite a lot of exposed velcro to potentially get hair caught in. They don’t say what head sizes it will fit, but I’d say it’s best for medium to larger sizes compared to the other sleep masks.

The light blocking with the Medi Grade sleep mask was total in all sleep positions for me. When I’m on my back it’s very comfortable to use, although I do need to tie it fairly tightly to get complete light blocking. It’s slightly less comfortable on your side or front because the memory foam and strap create bulk on the side of your face.

Overall, if you’d like some shallow contours for your eyes and very effective light blocking, the Medi Grade sleep mask is one to try. It might not be right though if you don’t like velcro, bulkier material when you’re on your side, or are environmentally conscious.

I bought it for under £10 in the UK. It typically costs under $10 in the US and Canada.

The best weighted sleep mask that can also be cooled.

The Barmy is the first of two weighted sleep masks I’ll be discussing. It weighs 0.8 pounds and you can put it in the freezer for a couple of hours before using it to get a cooling effect.

The combination of cooling and weighted pressure around the eyes is supposed to help with relaxation and headache relief, as well as light blocking. However, I don’t really suffer from headaches so I can’t comment on that point. But what I can say is that the light blocking with this one is fantastic.

It came in a plastic Ziplock bag to keep it clean when you cool it in the freezer. I found that the cooling effect lasts for around 20 to 30 minutes on average before your body heat and room temperature warm it up again.

The exterior material is viscose derived from bamboo on the side that goes over your eyes, and polyester around the front and the strap. It feels very soft against the skin, but it’s not so breathable because of the microfleece material and all the glass beads on the inside.

You can unzip it to remove the inner weighted section and conveniently machine wash the outside part. I like how the beads are sewn into pockets around the edges so they put pressure around your eyes but not directly onto them.

Below, you can see the Barmy sleep mask and the plastic case you can use to keep it clean if you want to cool it in the freezer.

The strap is part elastic and part micro hooks, and it’s designed to fit head sizes from 21 to 24 inch circumference.

When I lie on my back, the light blocking is amazing with the Barmy. It easily blocks out 100% of the light, with minimal adjusting. However, I found it virtually unusable on my side or front because it’s just too lumpy.

Like many of the bulkier sleep masks, I think the Barmy is really good for short naps on your back. I found the combination of 100% light blocking and cooling to be excellent, but I wouldn’t recommend it for longer periods of sleep. I also don’t think it’s good in the seated position because the weight obstructs nasal breathing.

The Barmy costs a little under $25 dollars in the US and Canada. It isn’t always available in the UK locally though, and you may end up paying more to ship it from the US if it’s out of stock.

Imak eye pillow

A weighted sleep mask with a cool cotton exterior.

The Imak eye pillow is similar to the Barmy in that it’s a weighted sleep mask and can also be cooled in the freezer before you use it. It weighs 0.5 pounds compared to the 0.8 of the Barmy, and the overall surface area is also smaller than the Barmy, so it’s more compact.

It came in a recyclable cardboard box, and the manufacturer says the plastic ergo beads that create the weight can also be recycled.

It comes with a basic plastic bag to keep it clean when cooling it in the freezer. I found the cooling effect lasts for around 20 minutes on average, which is nice for a nap, but that’s about it.

Below is the Imak eye pillow, the box it came in, and a simple plastic bag to cool it in the freezer.

I couldn’t find a listing of the exact material, which seems to be a common theme with these sleep masks. I believe the exterior material is cotton and it feels very soft on the skin.

There are some indentations for the eyes and there’s a bit more space for eyelids to move around than the Barmy. The stitching on the inside of the pockets is a bit untidy though, which is a shame, but I like how they’ve kept the beads around the edges to provide the pressure around the eyes and not directly onto them.

The strap is my biggest concern with the Imak eye mask. It’s made from very thin elastic, with no adjuster. On the plus side, it should stretch to fit any head size. Having said that, if you have a larger head the constant stretching is going to stress the elastic eventually.

On my back, I found that the light blocking is excellent. With a bit of adjusting to find the right position, I can get 100% light blocking, which is great.

On my side, I could also adjust it to get 100% light blocking, which surprised me. It’s comfortable on your side too because you can carefully position it to not have any lumps under your face. On my front though, it’s completely unusable because you really feel those lumps.

On balance, if the strap were better I’d choose the Imak over the Barmy because I prefer the material, the eye cavities are deeper, and it costs less, but that flimsy strap is a real concern.

If you only plan on using it from time to time when having a nap, or for headache relief, perhaps you might like it. But as a nightly sleep mask, I’m not convinced it’s the best choice.

Having said all that, this is my partner’s favorite sleep mask to use when an early summer sunrise wakes her up because she loves the feel of the material and the weight. That just goes to show how different masks will appeal to different people.

The Imak costs around $15 in the US and just under £23 in the UK.

A simple, flat sleep mask.

The jersey slumber sleep mask looks very similar to the Alaska Bear. It has the same flat design, it’s made from silk (apparently…) and it also has a slider buckle. However, the overall quality of the design just didn’t strike me as being as good as the Alaska Bear.

It came in a single use plastic bag, with no carry case. The manufacturer says the material is 100% mulberry silk. Although it does feel soft, it’s not as smooth or breathable as the Alaska Bear so I’m not entirely convinced about the quality of the silk. They say you can machine wash it cold though, which is convenient.

Below, you can see the Jersey Slumber sleep mask and the basic packaging it came in.

The stitching around the edges seems robust, so it should last a good length of time. Oddly, the mask seems to have been cut larger on one side and it’s visibly uneven, which again makes me question the overall quality.

It has a similar strap design to the Alaska Bear, combining elastic and the slider buckle. The maximum circumference is smaller though, and although they don’t list the head sizes it will fit, I calculated that it should fit head sizes in the 16 to 24 inch range.

When lying on my back, it was one of the least effective sleep masks at blocking light. Quite a lot of light came in around the nose, which may be because of my face shape, but the lack of an adjustable nose piece means I just couldn’t get a better fit.

On my side, I could get better light blocking, and with my eyes closed the light didn’t disturb me at all. Unexpectedly, it was actually really good when lying on my front. I was able to get 100% light blocking with some adjusting. Importantly, it was very comfortable to wear in all sleeping positions.

The Jersey Slumber might be a good option for front sleepers who’d like a flat sleep mask that doesn’t feel lumpy. But I think I’d still go with the Alaska Bear because of the overall quality. However, it’s worth considering if you’d like to try more than one to see which one fits your facial features best.

It costs under $10 in the US and Canada. I haven’t seen it sold online in the UK in recent months though.

The lowest priced contoured sleep mask .

The Bedtime Bliss is a contoured sleep mask that looks and feels quite basic compared to the ones I’ve already discussed. The eye pockets aren’t as deep as the Manta, but they are more spacious than the Medi Grade.

This isn’t one I’ve had the most success with myself though, and I think the lack of flexibility around the nose area means it’s one that either will or won’t suit your face shape.

It came in a recyclable box with a tiny carry bag you can roll it tightly into. Unfortunately, it also looks and feels quite cheaply made compared to the previous sleep masks.

Below is a photo of the Bedtime Bliss sleep mask, and box and soft carry case.

It looks like the edges have been sealed with heat rather than stitched. The strap also has minimal stitching to hold it in place, so I’m not sure it’s as robust as it could be.

They don’t list the materials used, but it feels synthetic and isn’t as soft as the previous sleep masks in this article. It’s hand wash only and I wouldn’t recommend chancing it in a washing machine.

The strap is elastic, and has quite thick velcro to fasten it that creates a lump you feel on the back of your head. They don’t list the head sizes it’s made for, but I’d say it will fit most head sizes, except perhaps the very largest.

On my back, which is the position I find sleep masks most effective usually, I’d say it only blocked out 80% of the light. Even with my eyes closed, I could still feel the light coming through.

On my side and front, it was a similar story, but at least it was relatively comfortable to use on my side or front because the material is quite thin on the side of the face.

This might be one to consider if your plan is to try a wide range of contoured sleep masks to find the right one for your face shape. But if you’re trying to get it right the first time, I think there are higher quality and more effective sleep masks that are equally low cost.

The Bedtime Bliss is an affordable sleep mask, often costing under £8 in the UK, and under $10 in the US and Canada.

Extra notes

Where else to buy sleep masks.

I bought all of the masks myself from Amazon, so I know what you get when you order from there. If you prefer, there are other stores you can get sleep masks from. Some of the ones I’ve discussed can be found on eBay, though the last time I checked they were cheaper on Amazon.

In the US, you could check Walmart and Target, both of which sell plenty of low-cost styles. In the UK, try John Lewes to compare different styles.

Some fashion brands make their own sleep masks, so you could try the website of your favorite brand websites.

You could also have a look on Etsy if you prefer to buy from smaller companies or individuals. It’s also a place to check for sleep masks made from more eco-friendly or recycled materials.

If you’re a dab hand with a needle and thread, try searching YouTube for phrases such as ‘DIY sleep mask’ or ‘make your own sleep mask’ and you’ll find tons of tutorials.

And if all else fails, my partner has been known to borrow one of my black T-shirts from time to time, roll that up, and not worry about her hair getting caught in the straps or velcro.

When companies change the design

Over the years that I’ve been testing and reviewing sleep masks, I’ve noticed that some manufacturers appear to make periodic changes to the existing designs sold on Amazon.

Sometimes the changes are relatively small, such as the color of the fabric or the size of the strap. Occasionally they make bigger changes, such as adding contours or a double strap.

For example, the Alaska Bear comes in several different versions now, and I’ve seen a couple of those versions change over time too. So if one of the links in this article doesn’t go to a mask that looks identical to the one in my photos, have a look under the main product photo to see if they have other options.

The Alaska Bear has five different models all appearing under the same heading, for example, so it may be that you need to click through them to find the one I was talking about. It may also be that you prefer how a newer model looks, in which case I hope it’s just as good.

Shades with brown, pink, orange, and pale gold undertones create a lovely warm-toned color story that one of our testers noted would look great on sun-kissed vacation skin. The powders were easy to blend with no patchiness in sight, and the finished look wore well without fading. However, Naosha, our tester with deep skin, observed that all the shades looked pretty similar to each other on her complexion.

Many eyeshadow aficionados say that Natasha Denona has some of the best eyeshadow palettes you can buy, and we agree. The brand’s I Need A Nude palette boasts 15 nude shades in a mix of high-impact finishes: matte, shimmer, and “wet effect” options that give the eyelids a glossy, ethereal touch .

While the eyeshadows varied in terms of pigmentation and texture, our testers found them fairly easy to blend with minimal fallout. The shimmer shades added dimension, and the mattes were excellent for blending the edges. We love that the color story allows for versatility; the muted tones are perfect for daytime wear, and the brighter metallics can amp up your look at night. However, our tester with a deep skin tone said she would have appreciated more gold shades for a classic nude look on her complexion.

Aside from revering the undeniable quality, our testers loved how the shades blended seamlessly across their eyelids. The glittery eyeshadows in the palette are incredibly vibrant and impactful, adding shine and texture that instantly elevate any look. However, they are prone to fallout, so we recommend patting off excess product before applying them. The palette is perfect for creating dramatic or eye-catching moments. The color story skews dark and, according to our testers, isn’t the most cohesive or ideal for beginners, but those who love to get creative with their makeup looks will love this luxury pick.

Urban Decay’s Naked2 Basics palette is one virtually everybody should have in their makeup kit. It features a stripped-back collection of cool-toned taupe and nude eyeshadows that can be worn individually for simple, everyday looks or layered and blended for a subtle smoky eye.

The first thing that struck our testers was how harmoniously the colors work together, making it a fantastic choice for eyeshadow beginners who struggle to pair shades. The pigmentation impressed them from the first swipe, and the eyeshadows stayed on their lids all day with minimal creasing. The quality is great and the colors are basic in the best way, but if you’re looking for a palette that offers a lot of versatility, we recommend other options on this list.

This small but mighty palette can create more looks than you might think. Inspired by the brand’s best-selling Bronze Palette, it offers five warm-toned shades in matte and metallic finishes. Each of the five shades is distinctly different, though they all pair together beautifully to create a variety of sunset-inspired looks.

Our testers loved virtually everything about this option. They commented on how creamy and blendable the shadows are and how seamlessly the colors complement each other. All the shades are richly pigmented and long-lasting, and despite the limited range, our testers were able to create varied looks with them. Both agreed that the warm and coppery colors would look great on virtually all skin tones.

What to Look for When Buying an Eyeshadow Palette

• Shade Range: We’re probably stating the obvious here, but it’s important to look for a palette with a range of colors you’ll use. If you tend to stick to neutral shades and rarely branch out, then opting for a neutral palette is wise. The shade range is also important from a cohesion standpoint. Some palettes have unique, interesting color stories, but if you’re not a pro or struggle to pair colors together, opt for a more minimal palette that takes the guesswork out. 
• Textures and Finishes: The textures and finishes you use when creating an eyeshadow look are equally as important as the colors you select. Matte finishes will appear more subtle and help with shading, while shimmers and metallics add light reflection and dimension. Glitter shadows with thicker, chunkier textures will provide a unique, eye-catching component to your look. 
• Pigmentation: The best eyeshadow palettes have buildable pigmentation, allowing you to slowly add more color and depth with each layer. Not enough pigment will make it hard to get an impactful look, while too much pigment will make the shadows tricky to control and blend.

How We Tested Eyeshadow Palettes

Before selecting which palettes to test, we did extensive market research, asked Byrdie editors about their favorites, and consulted with makeup artists to get their recommendations. We then had two testers with different complexions test all the same palettes at least twice during the testing period. They’re both experienced eyeshadow wearers, so we had them use these palettes how they normally would; with their go-to primer and tools. Each tester evaluated the palettes on ease of application, shade range, pigmentation, texture, and wear, and those that impressed them the most appeared on this list.

The perfect palette for you depends on what colors and finishes you gravitate towards—it’s completely personal. But generally, it’s wise to look for versatile eyeshadow palettes you can use for special-occasion and daily looks. Those with a variety of matte and shimmery neutrals are always a safe bet.

Knowing how to layer and blend eyeshadows can take some practice, but Aharon has some pointers. She suggests investing in a fluffy eyeshadow brush , which is best for blending, and stocking up on cream and powder shadows to increase longevity and create dimension. When you’re ready to create your look, Aharon suggests a strategic approach to finishes. “Keep the shimmer on the lower half of the lid below the crease, which will help to open the eyes,” she says. “Matte shadow is great for building an eye shape through the crease and for intensifying the lash lines and outer corners.”

While many palettes can work for day or night with the right application, Aharon says that an eyeshadow palette with rich pigment is best for creating bold evening look. “For every day, I like satin or matte finishes as they provide a softer effect,” she adds.

Eyeshadow palettes can usually last up to two years, but for hygienic reasons, Makeup artist Neil Scibelli says it’s best to replace them after one year. Cosmetics products typically list their shelf life on the packaging, so when in doubt, refer to the packaging of the palette you choose.

Scibelli advises wiping down the edges with a makeup wipe. To clean the actual shadows, lightly scrape the top off with a disposable mascara wand and dust off that layer, or try spritzing a tiny bit of alcohol over the shadows.

Because eyeshadows are delicate powders, it’s not uncommon for them to crack or shatter—but this is often a fixable issue. “Add some rubbing alcohol to create a paste-like texture, then use a flat butter knife to pat it back down into its pan and let it dry overnight,” advises Scibelli. FYI, if you have sensitive eyes, skip this (the alcohol can potentially be irritating) and replace the shadow or palette entirely.

The best and worst airports to have a red-eye flight, according to a travel expert who flies 200,000 miles a year

• Travel expert Gilbert Ott shared his favorite and least-favorite airports for red-eye flights.
• Ott emphasizes the importance of sleeping on the plane, and arriving refreshed.
• He highlights the role of restful lounges, healthy food, and transit ease at airports.

Flying through the night can be ideal for those trying to save time while traveling long distances — assuming you can sleep and arrive feeling refreshed, Gilbert Ott told Business Insider.

And he would know — the travel expert who flies 200,000 miles a year on average has had his fair share of red-eye flight experiences.

"People shouldn't hate on red-eyes — I think they can be really cool," he said. "But you don't want to show up haggard."

Ott added that restful lounges, healthy food, and ease of transit can make some airports better for red-eye flights compared to others. He shared with BI his favorite and least favorite airports for nighttime flights.

Los Angeles International Airport is one of the best for red-eyes with a wide variety of healthy eateries, Ott said.

"Most red-eyes involve jet lag because you're usually crossing a time zone, which is the reason for the red-eye," Ott told BI. "I try to eat before I fly on a red-eye because sleeping on the plane is vital . You want to try to get all the Zs you can."

When it comes to departure airports for night flights, Ott appreciates having healthy food options.

"I don't want to eat greasy fast food before I hop on a plane for six hours," he added. "I like a place that has a Chopped, a sushi kiosk, poke bowls, or anything that's a little bit lighter and easier to manage."

For example, Ott said Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has various healthy eateries, from the lounges to the food courts.

At LAX, travelers will find soups, salads, smoothies, and avocado toast.

"That's a game changer because then you can eat before you fly and get all the rest you need," he said. "And when you get on the plane, it's just about maximizing the rest."

John F. Kennedy International Airport also has quality food options, in Ott's opinion.

Like LAX, John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) has healthy options, Ott noted.

"They've done a good job of courting in a few decent restaurants," he said. "They have lots of lounges and there are lots of ways you can access the lounges ."

Ott highlights the  Amex Centurion Lounge  and the  Chase Sapphire Lounge , which has dishes like farm-raised Atlantic salmon over braised leeks for light, healthy options.

"All of these spaces do a better job than fast food," he added.

And there's no better sushi than at Tokyo International Airport, Ott said.

At Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport) , Ott said he's dined on the best sushi he's ever had.

"You can get it before your flight and carry it on," he said. "I love that."

Singapore Changi Airport is a great option for red-eyes because of the array of food and lounges, in Ott's experience.

" Singapore Changi Airport is always the leading G.O.A.T. of local food stalls," Ott said. "Some of the best local food is at the airport because famous places in Singapore set up locations there."

Ott added that the airport has impressive lounges with luxury amenities.

To Ott, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport is another leading airport for local cuisine.

"They've tried to flip the model of having big chains and have hyper-local places that deliver an authentic Parisian experience," Ott told BI.

"Travel can feel very stale. It can feel very boring. So I think when you bring in something that makes people feel like they're in a certain place — that's a really cool thing," he added.

Ott said Stockholm Arlanda Airport is one of the best for red-eye arrivals because it's easy to get to your destination.

When it comes to red-eye arrivals, centrally located airports with efficient mass transit are ideal, Ott told BI.

"Proximity to the city is the biggest clutch thing for red eyes. I would shout out that Stockholm Arlanda Airport has amazing train links," he said. "They leave all the time, they're reasonably priced, and it takes 20 minutes to get to the center of town."

Conversely, Ott said Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is one of the worst for red-eyes because it serves mostly fast food.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is generally a good airport — especially for lounges, Ott said. Still, its restaurants make it less ideal for red-eye departures.

"Atlanta's food options are weak," he said. "It's very fast-food-oriented."

While London Heathrow Airport can be great for some arrival passengers with lounge access, it's one of the worst for departing red-eyes because it's tough to get around.

Ott said that Unlike Stockholm,  London Heathrow Airport  isn't well-connected, making it a drag for red-eye flights.

"I hate Heathrow for departure for red eyes," he said. "There aren't many of them, but it's just a long grinding airport — everything is disjointed."

At the same time, Ott said Heathrow can be great for arrivals if you're a rewards member of Virgin Atlantic or British Airways — which have lounges exclusively for arriving passengers.

"A great red-eye experience occurs when airlines curate it for frequent flyers or business-class travelers , including what they need when they land," he said.

For example, Virgin Atlantic's arrival lounge offers custom breakfasts and shower suites.

"They have the perfect setup for helping you freshen up," he said. "A lot of red-eye customers are flying for work and don't want to show up to work smelling like a sewer without having brushed their teeth."

Ott has found that small regional airports are some of the worst for red-eyes — like Hollywood Burbank.

Not many small regional airports have red-eye flights, according to Ott.

"For the most part, red-eyes are more focused on those hub cities where they get people from all the regional airports into their big flying hub and then ship them off from there," he said. "Most red-eyes have a transatlantic or transcontinental demand, with very few exceptions."

He added that one of these exceptions is Hollywood Burbank Airport in California, which has red-eye flights to New York.

Hollywood Burbank has fewer food and lounge options than larger hub airports , which Ott understands because regional airports are smaller.

"I think there's just an inherent advantage to being a big airport because big airports can attract retail," he said.

However, it's worth noting that Hollywood Burbank Airport has one of the shortest walks to the gate in the US.
