We Watched The First Episode Of 'The Grand Tour' And It's A Masterpiece

We're already hooked.

They're back! Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond are finally back on our screens, although this time they're online. We have known that the legendary trio would be starting a new show called "The Grand Tour" for some time now, and we just got to see the first episode a day before it officially debuts. Amazon has pulled out all of the stops to make this the best debut episode possible. What better way to kick off a new car show than with the three greatest cars on the market today, the hypercar holy trinity?

"Top Gear" always wanted to get the Porsche 918, McLaren P1, and Ferrari LaFerrari together on one track, but "The Grand Tour" got it done in the very first episode. But that comparison comes later. Anyway, the episode's intro is one of the coolest things we have ever seen , with the guys driving three high-performance Mustangs through the desert. We are then introduced to the tent where all of the studio portions of the show will be filmed. We immediately get to see the three blokes doing what they do best, comparing three incredible cars. James May arrives late to the party with the LaFerrari. The car is often the butt of a lot of jokes because it doesn't have a registration and can not be driven on real roads.

If you love seeing shots of amazing cars sliding around corners "The Grand Tour" will not disappoint you. Like "Top Gear," there are lots of explosions and tire smoke, just the way we like it. There will be different mixes of heavy-car vs. heavy-destruction episodes as we have become accustom to. If you prefer the heavily car-based episodes this first one will make you incredibly happy. We have been looking forward to seeing which member of the holy trinity is fastest. Before the guys decide which of those three is best, we get our first look at the show's new track, which Clarkson calls "the most dangerous track...IN THE WORLD." The track is in England and features tons of "hazards."

Clarkson describes the track as being so deadly that it is even shaped like the Ebola virus. It is surrounded by an animal-filled wood, and there is even an unexploded WW2 bomb and an old lady's house because why not. Unlike the "Top Gear" airfield, this track does not have any runoff. This is where the track reviews will take place, and the very first review is a great one. Jeremy Clarkson drives the BMW M2, which he says is the best M Car that the company has ever built . We then get to see the M2 driven around the track by a racing car driver. This time around, he does in fact have a name. The motoring show's new tame racing driver is NASCAR driver Mike Skinner, and yes, he can turn right.

After the track review we learn that there will no longer be a celebrity track segment, so if you always hated that part of "Top Gear" you can rest easy. Instead we see a glimpse of a segment called "Celebrity Brain Crash." The first guest is Jeremy Renner, who you may know as Hawkeye from "The Avengers." Unfortunately, both he and the two replacement guests comically die before they make it to the tent. We aren't sure if this will be a recurring joke, but it sure was hilarious. After that rather odd segment we finally get back to seeing which of the holy trinity is best. Unfortunately, things don't get off to a flying start when the guys try to drag race.

We knew that these three cars were close in performance, and when they were drag raced together the results were almost entirely different every time depending on who got the best launch. It all came down to the timed laps. All of the cars had the same driver and the same tires. The final results were the LaFerrari at 1:54.4, the P1 at 1:55.5, and the winner, the Porsche 918 at 1:54.2. Although the bet between Hammond and Clarkson about changing his name to Jennifer was not mentioned, Clarkson did say that the other two could knock his house down if the P1 lost. It was an incredible test, but in the end the Porsche was best.

So here is the big question, was "The "Grand Tour better than "Top Gear?" The simple answer, the long answer, hell, every answer, is YES! The visuals were stunning, the cars were excellent, and the hosts were allowed to be real. The relaunched "Top Gear" felt like a shell of itself , and now we can see why. The love of cars that Clarkson, Hammond, and May all shared drove the show. We (gearheads) can all see a piece of ourselves in each of them, because they are just like us. They aren't fancy racing drivers or Ferrari collectors, just ordinary guys. We are glad to see the gang back together. The wait was well worth it. So the trio try to look for an investment opportunity by picking rare and classic cars whose prices haven't gone through the roof yet. May admits that the Lancia was so poorly designed that the engine could explode for a variety of unconnected reasons. Clarkson has major issues with gear changing in the Alpha. The pedals on Hammond's fiat are very small and very close together. On a go-cart track the trio decide to drift their car, but none has the power to unstuck their back ends. So, May decides to put drifting covers on his back tires to makes them skid forcefully. Since there was only one pair, Hammond makes more drifting covers with a plastic bin cover, which makes his and Clarkson's car slippery and ends up ruining Clarkson's engine (the trans-axle falls off) and the whole car now shakes. Clarkson must pedal 25 miles (its 2 degrees and raining in Scotland) in the back up bike to the hotel. In retaliation, he removes Hammond's roof at night, while his own car is fixed. Hammond suggests an alternate route to the NC 500 and calls it PENIS 287 (Particularly extremely nicely intermediate Scotland 287 miles route). Its Clarkson's Birthday and Hammond and May have not wished him, and that has made Clarkson angry. But unknown to him they have planned a surprise party for him at the next hotel. While Clarkson again attends to his prop shaft, Hammond cooks him deep fried Spaghetti Bolognese. May does the decorations and plays the bagpipes. May puts all the guests to sleep by reciting the list of all cars Clarkson had ever owned. The next day the trio are off for the last 50 miles of their journey. Clarkson's prop shaft again develops an issue and Hammond's headlights won't work. 6 months after the film, May's car is worth BP 6000, Clarkson's is worth BP 8000, Hammond's is worth nothing. Conversation street: May has put insulating tapes on the rear wheels of Scalextric cars to make them drift and hence knew how to make his Lancia drift. Land rovers reckon that 70% of people get car sick and have installed a system in cars that adjust the cabin conditions when they sense people are getting car sick. RAC has put an advisory saying that parents can stop motion sickness in kids by getting them to look at the horizon and not their mobile screens. Police in Dubai are testing a BP 117,000 hover bike. 60 mph, 25 minutes range. But if you fall off, you will be shredded to bits in the propellers. Jag i-pace, Clarkson tried to charge it in his farm, and blew his entire supply. He plugged it at his neighbors and overnight it only got enough charge to cover 29 miles. A fast charger would probably take 45 mins, but Clarkson doesn't have patience for that either. Meanwhile, at the Eboladrome, Clarkson compares the new BMW M5 (0-60 in 3 secs, 592 BHP) to the same but different Alpina B5 (4.4L V8, twin turbo, 4-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox, 600 BHP, 205 mph). A basic BMW M5 is a 4-door saloon, with a boot, 5-seater, and a powerful engine. Beats a Mercedes sports car in a drag race. Still drifts properly, despite having a turbo charger, and a 4-wheel drive system. Has numerous options to customize the car to your specific tastes. The Alpina meanwhile was not designed for a racetrack, but for the roads. Has a suspension designed for potholes and steering which is smooth. But on a track, the M5 beats the Alpina hands down. But for everyday driving Alpina is better. The M5 does 1:20.4 at the Eboladrome, 4 secs quicker than the older M5. Alpina does 1:21.6.

The seventh generation of the BMW M5 has entered the practical phase of its development process. The new high-performance sedan from BMW M is completing its testing on public roads, BMW proving grounds, and racetracks around the world.

But this time the story does not end with the sedan. American fans of the M brand have even more to look forward to – much more. Enthusiasts across the country have made their voices heard, and their wish has been granted. The BMW M5 Touring will be available for the very first time to customers in the United States and Canada, among other countries.

UNRIVALLED DRIVING DYNAMICS.

Like the future BMW M5 Sedan, the next M5 Touring will feature an M Hybrid drivetrain closely related to the one found in the BMW M Hybrid V8 GTP race car. Its M-typical performance characteristics along with precisely tuned chassis technology facilitate driving dynamics and agility at a level unique in its class. With the introduction of the new M5, BMW M is continuing its path to electrification. "We are now also installing a hybrid drive system with typical M performance in other high-performance cars," says Dirk Häcker, Head of Development at BMW M.

For almost 40 years, the BMW M5 has been the benchmark for driving dynamics, agility, and precision in the high-performance sedan segment. Evolutionary progress, development know-how from motorsport, and pioneering innovations in the areas of drive, suspension, aerodynamics, and lightweight construction have shaped the history of the BMW M5 . Engines with six, eight, and ten cylinders, M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving characteristics, and M xDrive four-wheel drive are just some of the technological milestones with which the M5 has consistently redefined top performance in a sedan that is unconditionally suitable for everyday use. The seventh generation of the BMW M5 continues this progress – with further innovations for an even more intense performance experience.

TESTED ON THE WORLD’S MOST LEGENDARY RACE TRACK.

Testing of the first prototypes of the new BMW M5 Touring is already underway, in urban traffic, on mountain roads and motorways around Munich, at the BMW M headquarters in Garching, and in the US. Soon, engineers will head to the Nürburgring's Nordschleife where the integration of the drive and suspension systems will be carried out with the aim of ensuring the ideal balance of sporting performance on the racetrack and superior ride comfort in everyday driving and over long distances.

Grand Touring In An M5 Touring

People drive BMWs for various reasons. I’ve always considered mine to be tools—each one performs best in a specific role. The M coupe has become the track tool, the E30 is the daily driver, and the M5 Touring has taken up road-trip duty, or grand touring.

In Colorado, one of the best places to go for a grand tour is the southwestern corner of the state; it’s an enchanted land where the high mountains meet the high desert. The occasion that I had in mind was the Drive4Corners BMW meet—I’ll report on in print later, but the trip out there and back would prove to be an adventure all of its own.

A visual inspection didn’t show any leaks, but I have the nose of a bloodhound. The scent trail lead me to the fuel-level sensor, located on the top of the gas tank on the right side. The plastic fitting was loose and fuel was leaking out. Not a problem, it’s a small leak, let me just snug it up slightly. Crack! It broke! Whoops, I’ll just order a new E34 M5 fuel sender from BMW and be on my way, right? No, not so much….

Plan B: plastic weld, a fire extinguisher, and a AAA Premium membership that expands my covered tow range by several hundred miles. I reckoned that as long as I didn’t fill up the tank all of the way, the plastic weld might hold—in the short term.

As we loaded our gear into the Touring, my wife asked what the fire extinguisher was for. “Nothing, dear—safety first!” (Or, as Harold Lloyd so famously put it,  Safety Last!)

We left in a large group winding through the foothills of Colorado’s Front Range into South Park, a vast expanse of flat, high tundra. From there we descended into the upper Arkansas River Valley, and crossed over Poncha Pass to the Sangre de Cristo mountains and the San Louis Valley, another vast expanse of high tundra. The two-lane highway was a lovely mix of high-speed mountain sweepers and desolate arrow-straight tarmac that pointed to the horizon. A caravan of beautiful Bavarians along the way only added to the scenery, where, among other breakdowns, more than one cooling system was tested, but nobody was left behind.

The M5 Touring was in its element out on the open road, and it performed flawlessly thanks to that healthy dose of plastic weld (and not topping off the gas tank). We made the Purgatory resort at dusk after helping a stranded 2002 in the last few miles, and the festivities began—but you’ll have to read about those in  Roundel .

The M5, combined with a surprising lack of traffic and an even unhealthier lack of fear of heights on my part, delighted us with some fantastic grand touring. Even after a band of monsoonal rain showers soaked the pavement, the big M5 Touring stuck to the tarmac like a cat’s claws on Astroturf, reducing even my most aggressive corning attempts to nothing more than civilized motoring.

After Ouray, the scenery turned to high desert along the base of Colorado’s Western Slope until we turned east at US 133. That road climbed back into the lush green aspens of the Grand Mesa and White River National Forests. Along the way we traversed the appropriately named Sunshine Mesa and the charming quaint hamlets of Hotchkiss and Paonia, Colorado. From there we entered the Raggeds Wilderness, where a stone wall of mountains towered above us until we crested McClure Pass, from which US 133 dropped into the narrow Crystal River valley.

When we arrived, there was an absolutely stunning 1955 Cessna 180 with a tent under its wing. Its owner was a retired German Air Force pilot who was intimately familiar with airstrip. After a short conversion, he made me an offer I couldn’t refuse: a flight showing me several takeoffs, approaches, and landings into the field.

Back-country mountain flying requires a unique skill set, but it’s extremely rewarding when done with a healthy respect for the weather and terrain. In the skilled hands of my local guide, the approach was straightforward, and the Cessna 180 offered plenty of extra safety margins. After we landed, my wife even got her own sightseeing flight.

We’ve been saying it for a couple of years , but of course, it’s not official until BMW says so. Nonetheless, here is the confirmation: the BMW M5 Touring is coming to the United States. BMW Head of Design Domagoj Dukec has allegedly confirmed the news at a press event in Portugal for Guide Auto Web . According to the media outlet, both the BMW M5 Sedan (G90) and M5 Touring (G99) will cross the ocean this year. Of course, the head designer hasn’t shared the reveal dates. The M5 Sedan will likely be unveiled first this summer, followed a couple of months later by the M5 Touring.

There aren’t many secrets left to reveal though. We’ve already learned from Dukec in the past that the M5 design is based of the i5 M60, for both variants. Naturally, expect the typical M aggressive bits on the car with flared fenders, and a lower and bold stance. Inside, we expect a flat-bottom steering wheel with the M flair, alongside the M1 and M2 buttons. The large curved display will be present as well, only this time powered by the iDrive 9 .

718 Horsepower Expected

The powertrain in the 2025 BMW M5 Sedan and Touring comes from the BMW XM . It combines a plug-in hybrid system with the brand-new S68 4.4-liter V8 engine, resulting in a formidable minimum output of 718 horsepower for its standard model. Although the exact torque figures are not yet confirmed, we anticipate them to be on par with the BMW XM Label Red, boasting 738 lb-ft of torque. As a plug-in hybrid, the upcoming BMW M5 Touring will also operate on electric power, but don’t expect too much range.

Although the official performance figures are yet to be released, the 2025 BMW M5 models are likely to surpass its predecessors in terms of acceleration and top speed. The high-powered S68 V8, coupled with the instant torque provided by its electric motor, will compensate the weight penalty induced by the battery pack, resulting in blistering acceleration. Of course, in typical BMW M fashion, we expect some engineering tricks to make the car lighter than it actually is.

Production of the 2025 BMW M5 will begin in July 2024 and will go until 2031. The BMW M5 Touring G99 goes on the production line in November 2024 and it’s also expected to run into 2031. While it’s not artificially limited, we expect the BMW M5 Touring allocations to be in smaller numbers initially. [Source: guideautoweb ]
