Boney James

Boney James

Boney James has put in his proverbial 10,000 hours as a musician, performer, writer, and producer. At age 10, the New York native picked up the saxophone and never looked back, parlaying his love of R&B into a musical aesthetic. He turned pro before his 20 th  birthday and became an in-demand touring sax and keyboard player for Morris Day, the Isley Brothers, and many others.

Boney launched his solo career in 1992, which has spawned 18 studio albums, including 2022’s  Detour . A dozen of his albums have landed at #1 on  Billboard ’s Contemporary Jazz Album chart. During his 30-year career, Boney has earned four Grammy nominations, two NAACP Image Award nominations, and a Soul Train Award. For the inimitable Boney James, life begins at 60. The “cat in the hat” is back and better than ever.

“What drives me is my love of making music and my desire for people to hear what I’ve made,” he says. “I still love the communal aspect of playing live. There’s nothing else like it.”

Will Downing is an American singer, songwriter and producer who is famous for his rich, baritone vocals when he performs contemporary jazz and R&B music.

Will Downing was born Wilfred Downing on 29 November, 1963 in Brooklyn, New York, USA. He studied as a music producer in a school whose alumni included Kedar Massenburg, the president of Motown, and Barbara Streisand. Downing graduated in 1981 and went on to later record for the music company, Motown.

Downing has enjoyed enormous success throughout his music career. He has worked on albums by a number of highly acclaimed artists, including Jennifer Holiday, Kool & the Gang, Gerald Albright, Billy Ocean, Regina Belle and Mica Paris. His discography consists of a staggering 23 albums, which are a mix of R&B and Jazz and were all released by several different record labels. In 2002, Downing received the International Association of African-American Music Diamond Award and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2000. Some of his most well-known songs include is 1991 hit ‘I Try’, ‘A Million Ways’, ‘A Love Supreme’, ‘Wishing on a Star’, ‘Free’, ‘After Tonight’ and ‘You Were Just Meant For Me’, amongst many many others.

Artists that he is often compared to or can be thought of a similar to include Howard Hewett, Jeffrey Osborne, Freddie Jackson, Keith Washington and Phil Perry.

He has produced a steady stream of music from the early 80s right up to today, despite suffering from polymyositis.

Live reviews

I’m not usually a fan of covers artists, and by no means is Will Downing solely a covers kind of guy, but I am a huge fan of his interpretations of pop classics from the 80s, such as Where is the Love, and I go Crazy. His distinctively rich and creamy baritone voice can hold an audience in silence for moments at a time, captivating everyone listening.

Seeing him in concert was amazing, it’s not very often that you can have the opportunity to hear a voice that powerful with such a range in a live setting. He started the show with After Tonight, which went down really well, and had everyone in the crowd on their feet, swaying and singing along with him. His jazzy runs are real crowd pleasers, and in those few show off moments, everyone cheered with appreciation.

The band that he has backing him up seem like they’ve been playing together for years, as they were extremely tight, and when Downing began to improvise or would quickly switch from one song to another, seemingly unrehearsed, they were able to follow without hesitation. Downing is really great at being involved in his music, but still interacting with the audience. There’s no wall between his performance space, and that of the spectators, and he gets everyone singing along which was great fun.

Whether you know the name Will Downing or not, I’m sure you are familiar with atleast one of his songs. Having been around in the music industry for a few decades, he has put out a few albums, including one that got a Grammy Award nomination for Best Traditional R&B Album in 2000.

His live shows are a lot of fun. He draws a crowd that ranges in so many ways, but most notably, age. His band includes a drummer, guitarist, bassist, key player and two backup vocalists. He remains the center of the stage, but doesn’t have to work hard for your attention because he has so much enthusiasm and love for what he does, you can’t take your eyes off of him. He is extremely personable, and loves talking to the crowd in between songs, and even just as songs have already started. He gets people up and moving, dancing and singing, bringing together everyone under the perfect rhythm that he has perfected so well under his own unique style. His baritone voice draws you in even more, almost making you believe that there can’t possibly be any better of a voice, especially when it came to his love songs.

My wife and I are huge Will Downing fans and I'm pleased to say that the concert was great! Will Downing gave a terrific performance and allowed his musical guests, background vocalists and musicians opportunities throughout to display their talents. He also arranged his set to allow subtly staggered rest periods for his vocalists and musicians, which did not detract in any way from the set and was likely unnoticed by most. His conversational patter between numbers was funny and engaging, and his guest artists Phil Perry and James "D-Train" Williams brought the crowd to their feet with their music. My lone disappointment was that the trumpet lines throughout were synthesized- As a trumpet player, I know the energy that live horns add to a performance, but his only live horn was an alto saxophone (who was excellent nonetheless). Overall, my wife and I had a wonderful experience.

Will Downing was as fabulous as ever. Unfortunately for him, the acoustics were horrible at the Kings Theater in Brooklyn. I was sitting 4th row center orchestra and I could hardly hear his wonderful voice with the excessive bass that his mike was putting out. I will go to see him again, but not there. My husband was not able to make the show due to a car accident, and as disappointed as he was, he would have been more disappointed had he been sitting so close and not able to fully appreciate Will Downing.

I have always been a fan on Will Downing. I enjoyed the show last night in Detroit at the Sound Board. I wish Will was performing alone so he could sing some of my favorite songs. After the show last night I felt good about the whole show and will always be a true fan of Will Downing. I cannot wait to see him again at Chene Park next summer.

Will Downing a job well done as usual.

The show was excellent! I didn't know Will had such a sense of humor. And Avery Sunshine is an Angel I love her to pieces. Carol Riddick can Sang! Didn't know she could hit those high notes like that. I didn't know what happened to Alex Bugnon though he was on ticket I would have liked to see him as well. Will, I will definitely come your concert again!

I attended the Will Downing show 09/07 and he was hot as usual. The other performances were good but my ticket was for Will. The only thing is I wish he would sing some of his other great hits. If you’ve never been and you want to hear good baritone masculine man sound he’s your guy.

Festival Headliners

Saturday's headliner, arrested development.

This year's festival features headliner Arrested Development on Saturday, October 5 .

The multi-platinum, Grammy Award Winning Group, Arrested Development delivers an onstage energy that everyone wants to be a part of! Having received numerous accolades, including the first ever Hip-Hop artist to receive the “best new artist” Grammy, (a distinction it still maintains today in that category), the group was best known as pioneers of conscious rap. Arrested Development received a Grammy award for “best rap single” for their anthemic prayer-like hit song, Tennessee , a song that has gone on to be named as one of the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in the Top 100 Greatest Songs of the 90's by VH1.

With the success of the single Mr. Wendal , Arrested Development brought the issue of homelessness to the forefront. The group donated half of the royalty earnings from Mr. Wendal to the National Coalition of the Homeless. They were also asked to write a song for Spike Lee’s movie about minister and human rights activist, Malcom X. The movie, “X,” went on to become one of Spike Lee’s most highly acclaimed works. The Arrested Development song, Revolution, would forever be associated with the movie.

Rolling Stone magazine named Arrested Development Band of The Year in 1992, while VH-1 named them one of the greatest Hip-Hop artists of all time! Their sophomore release Zingalamaduni was a critics’ favorite garnering another Grammy nomination and selling half a million copies.

In September 2019, the band was given an award at the Black Music Honors Awards and in 2000, Arrested Development reemerged with a new lineup and a new album. For the last thirty years, Arrested Development has performed sold-out concerts in every part of the world.

She has performed throughout the East Coast with orchestras, regional jazz bands and as leader of her own ensembles.

Desiree Roots was the opening act for internationally renowned artists including Boney James, Brian McKnight, Gerald Albright and B. B. King. Chart-topping R&B sax player Boney James released his new single “Coastin’” featuring vocals from 5-time Grammy winner Lalah Hathway, The track is available today via all streaming services and available on James’ forthcoming 18th studio album, Detour, out September 23rd via Concord Records.  The new 10-song collection is a subtle stylistic turn that builds on the commercial success of 2020’s Solid, James’ highest charting release ever on the pop charts, peaking in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200.

“I am so thrilled to finally have the opportunity to collaborate with Lalah. I am a huge fan! It was a complete joy to co-write this song with her and Jairus Mozee and have her come over and sing this amazing performance.” – Boney James

Detour was recorded largely at Boney’s L.A. home studio (live drums and percussion were tracked at venerable Sunset Sound). The album was produced by Boney with co-production from in-demand writer/producer, Jairus “J-Mo” Mozee (Anderson.Paak, Nicki Minaj, Anthony Hamilton) among others. Additional musicians on the album are keyboardist Tim Carmon (Eric Clapton), longtime drummer Omari Williams and bassist Alex Al, renowned percussionist Lenny Castro and guitarists Big Mike Hart and Paul Jackson Jr.

During his 30-year career, Boney James has released a staggering 18 studio albums – including a pair of Christmas records -with 1995’s Seduction, 1997’s Sweet Thing and 1999’s Body Language all RIAA certified gold. In 2015, Boney’s future soul spent 11 weeks atop the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart and was the best-selling Contemporary Jazz Record of 2015.  Boney has earned four Grammy nominations (“I’m not gonna lie… I’d still love a statue,” he says), two NAACP Image Award nominations and a Soul Train Award, while a dozen of his albums have landed at #1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Album chart.  His collaborators in the past include a Who’s Who of R&B and soul: Raheem DeVaughn, Faith Evans, George Benson, George Duke, Dwele, Al Jarreau, Philip Bailey, Anthony Hamilton, Jaheim, Eric Benét, Dave Hollister, Stokley Williams, Kenny Lattimore and Angie Stone.
