Bristol Motor Speedway

Unarguably the most exciting half-mile in motorsports, Bristol Motor Speedway is nestled in the hills of the Tennessee/Virginia border.   Construction began on this world famous facility in 1960 by Carl Moore, Larry Carrier and RG Pope and was completed one year later with the first Cup Series race held July 1961.  This gave the motorsports world a perfect .5 mile oval known as the "World's Fastest Half Mile".

In 1969 the track was reshaped and remeasured, making the half mile oval now .533 miles with a 40 foot wide racing surface.  The straightaways offer banks of 6-10 degrees and the turns are banked at 24-30 degrees.  This same year is when Larry Carrier sold the Speedway to Bruton Smith's Speedway Motorsports, Inc for 26 million dollars and the name officially changed from Bristol International Speedway to Bristol Motor Speedway.  After years of renovations and additions, the fishbowl shaped motorsports facility now has a seating capacity of more than 160,000 fans.

Experience a race here and you'll understand why this is the most popular track in NASCAR.

Bristol motor speedway.

The Last Great Colosseum. The World’s Fastest Half-Mile. The Bristol Bullring. The Colosseum of Crash. Thunder Valley.

Those Bristol Motor Speedway nicknames couldn’t be more appropriate. When you first see the iconic race track, which sits in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, it’s impossible not to think of Rome’s legendary Colosseum where gladiators did battle – just as they do today but only with race cars. The .533-mile oval’s tight confines feature an abundance of speed, noise, and wrecks, which can often lead to hot tempers and scuffles among the drives – all of which have helped make BMS one of NASCAR’s most popular race tracks.

In its infancy, as is true now, those factors made BMS a playground for the sport’s biggest names, including “The King,” Richard Petty, as well as David Pearson, Bobby Allison, and Cale Yarborough. Dale Earnhardt, who won nine times at Bristol, liked to say, “If you don’t like racing at Bristol, you’re not a real race car driver,” which has been echoed by many other Bristol winners and NASCAR champions, such as Darrell Waltrip, Rusty Wallace, Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, and Kurt Busch.

The brainchild of Bristol entrepreneurs Larry Carrier, Carl Moore, and R.G. Pope, Bristol International Speedway, as it was first known, opened in 1961. At that time, the track measured a perfect half-mile and featured 22-degree banking in the corners. Seating capacity was a mere 18,000 for the first NASCAR race in July of 1961.

Eight years after it opened for NASCAR races, the track was reshaped and re-measured, turning it into a .533-mile oval with 36-degree banking, which was among the steepest in the sport at that time. It also made it one of the fastest tracks on the circuit, helping make it a favorite among drivers.

Other early-year highlights include:

  • The track was sold in 1976 to Lanny Hester and Gary Baker, and in 1978, they changed its name to Bristol International Raceway
  • In August 1978, the first night race was held on the oval
  • In April 1982, Hester sold his half of the speedway to Warner Hodgdon
  • In July 1983, Hodgdon purchased the other half of the track from Baker. He appointed Carrier as the track’s general manager.
  • Carrier took possession of the speedway after Hodgdon filed for bankruptcy
  • In August 1992, BIR became the first race track to host a Cup race on a concrete track surface
  • On Jan. 22, 1996, Carrier sold BIR to Bruton Smith

Once Smith purchased the speedway, he hired Jeff Byrd as its general manager, and the track, already a fan favorite, began to explode in popularity. The track’s name was changed to Bristol Motor Speedway, and by August 1996, Smith had already added 15,000 more seats to bring its capacity to 86,000.

By April 1997, the track’s seating capacity was at 118,000 – making it the largest sports arena in Tennessee and one of the largest in the country – and nearly two dozen skyboxes had been built. Over the next several years, Smith continued to add seating and skyboxes, finally topping out at 160,000 seats and approximately 200 suites.

The beloved speedway, which was resurfaced in 2007, has come a long way from its early days. Today, BMS, which sold out 55 straight races through March 2010, offers guests a wide range of accommodations, from man cave suites to barstools to a relaxing environment high atop the track at the Turn One Tavern to a nightclub inside the oval called The Apex. Spectators also get to enjoy Colossus T.V., the world’s largest outdoor center-hung four-sided video screen with a 540,000-watt audio system.

BMS, which hosted an NFL exhibition in 1961 between Washington and Philadelphia, also made history when, in 2016, it became the site of the largest crowd to witness a college football game. The University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech played before a sellout crowd of nearly 157,000. The track also hosts monster truck races, Speedway In Lights , an annual holiday drive-through event and fundraiser for Speedway Children’s Charities, concerts and other events.

Thunder valley.

Click to learn more about the unique bristol dragway strip

Once you visit Bristol Dragway for a National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) race, you’ll understand how it got its nickname – Thunder Valley.

Sitting amongst the mountains and carved between two hills is the legendary quarter-mile dragstrip where cars explode off the starting line and hit speeds of more than 330 mph., resulting in a thundering sound unique to Bristol. The picturesque setting, the speeds, and the legends of drag racing make Bristol one of the most sought-after tickets on the NHRA circuit.

Built by Larry Carrier, Carl Moore, and Hal Hamrick in 1965, four years after Bristol Motor Speedway opened, the facility was ahead of its time. At the cost of approximately $1 million, the trio developed a state-of-the-art super dragway that had no equal. Bristol International Dragway, as it was initially called, was, without question, the premier dragstrip in the country.

The dragway, which boasted 15,000 seats, hosted NHRA races when it first opened, and American Hot Rod Association events and International Hot Rod Association races in subsequent years. After changing ownership a couple of times, in 1996, Bruton Smith purchased the facility and renamed it Bristol Dragway. After the 1997 season, Smith and racing legends John Force and Kenny Bernstein blew up the old tower and built a new, $18 million facility. And, as it was when it was first built, it was considered a showplace, the finest drag racing facility in the country.

The dragway features a professional pit area that can accommodate over 100 cars and transporters, while the sportsman area can accommodate up to 500 vehicles. It sits at an elevation of 1,475 feet, boasts a 3,800-foot dragway with 700 feet of concrete, a control tower, grandstands, support buildings, and a $500,000 Musco sports lighting system.

Bristol Dragway hosted the NHRA’s inaugural Winston Showdown in 1999, pitting Top Fuel dragsters against Funny Cars for the first time. After the 2000 Showdown, BD hosted its first NHRA points race since the 1967 season – the 2001 O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals.

Upon the completion of the 2004 season, a new terrace section, with nearly 3,500 seats, was added above the existing grandstand on the left side of the dragway. Corporate suites topped the terrace section while the Thunder Valley Club – on the right side of the dragstrip, doubled in size to 1,000 seats. With the latest additions, Bristol Dragway now seats approximately 30,000.

The Thunder Valley Nationals have been held in April, May, June, and most recently in October. Bristol Dragway also runs bracket races, monster truck shows, concerts, and various other drag racing events.

Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee

Rev up a group tour at Bristol Motor Speedway

In Bristol, Tennessee, groups can go on a behind-the-scenes track tour of “The Last Great Colosseum.” Bristol Motor Speedway, a NASCAR short track venue and the third-largest sports venue in America, is known for its very short track and extremely steep banking.

Although the 0.533-mile oval is short in length, the track at Bristol Motor Speedway is one of the most popular with its two pit roads, all-concrete surface and stadium-like seating, earning it its nickname of “The Last Great Colosseum.”

Track tours of the speedway are available daily, except during major speedway and dragway events. Tours begin from Speedway World Gift Shop, located on the first floor of the O. Bruton Smith Building.

Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee

On the guided tours, groups can climb the famous high banks of Bristol’s track and even sign it; experience the excitement of Victory Lane; and explore Thunder Valley, the speedway’s drag strip.

The drag strip is famously nicknamed “Thunder Valley” for its location between two mountains, causing thundering acoustics when cars race down the strip.

Every year, the speedway hosts NASCAR events in April and August. The speedway also is home to one of the most famous races in all of NASCAR — the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race. Held every year, the night race is a highly anticipated event for fans all around the country.

Aside from NASCAR, the speedway hosts a variety of events including monster truck races, concerts and car shows.

Group ticket pricing for events is available for 20 or more people, and reservations are required for track tours of seven or more group members.

MLB Speedway Classic '25 coming to historic Bristol

Matthew Leach

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Buckle up. Major League Baseball is coming to “Thunder Valley.”

MLB announced Friday morning that the Braves and Reds will play a regular-season game in 2025 at the historic Bristol Motor Speedway in northeastern Tennessee on Saturday, Aug. 2, in the MLB Speedway Classic.

  • Complete coverage: 2025 MLB Speedway Classic presented by BuildSubmarines.com

“Major League Baseball is excited to deliver a special game at Bristol Motor Speedway, a unique setting that sports fans will remember forever," said Commissioner Rob Manfred in a statement. "The Reds and the Braves form an ideal matchup because of their dynamic talent and the proximity of their markets. We look forward to celebrating our game with a wide array of fans, both on and off the field throughout the weekend, and highlighting the rich traditions of sports, music and community in Tennessee and across the region."

The event featured legends from both baseball and NASCAR, plenty of local dignitaries, an asphalt diamond marking where the field will be located, mascots, hot dog vendors, and plenty more bridging the two sports. Oh, and also a few hot laps, as stock cars decked out in team logos sped around the track during and after the announcement.

It will be the first regular-season game in National League/American League history played in Tennessee, and continues a recent push by MLB to play games in unconventional, memorable settings. Other examples in recent years include MLB at Fort Bragg in 2016, MLB in Omaha in 2019, MLB at Field of Dreams in 2021, MLB at Rickwood Field earlier this year, and the annual Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pa. Those games were, respectively, the first regular-season AL/NL games in North Carolina, Nebraska, Iowa and Alabama.

  • MLB games played at non-MLB parks

“On behalf of the team at Bristol Motor Speedway and Speedway Motorsports, we are thrilled to partner with Major League Baseball to bring the Speedway Classic to the ‘Home of Big Events’ on Aug. 2, 2025," said Jerry Caldwell, track president of Bristol Motor Speedway. "There is deep baseball history in Bristol and around this area, long acknowledged as the heart of the Appalachian League. In addition, Bristol’s location makes it the perfect ‘meet in the middle’ destination for a showdown between these two beloved clubs."

  • Kids hit the Speedway in unique Play Ball event

A baseball diamond will be built across the track and infield of the legendary speedway, putting baseball inside one of the largest standalone sports venues in the country. It will be primarily situated between Turns 3 and 4 of the track. The dimensions will be 330 feet down the lines, 400 to center field, 375 to the right-field alley and 384 feet to the left-field alley.

In racing configuration, the high-banked concrete track has a capacity of approximately 146,000. BMS has also hosted events including concerts and a college football game between Tennessee and Virginia Tech in 2016 .

And in fact, that game, the “Battle at Bristol,” was part of the inspiration for the Speedway Classic. Discussions about a possible game at the track date back to 2017, according to several key figures, though they only ramped up in the past few years.

“This has been years in the making,” said Caldwell. “This has been a long conversation with our friends at Major League Baseball. It’s been a wonderful collaboration to get to this undertaking. Bristol is the home of big events.”

The game will count as a Reds home game, and it will follow games in Cincinnati on Thursday, July 31, and Friday, Aug. 1. Sunday will be held as an off-day for both teams, as a buffer in case of inclement weather. FOX Sports will provide national coverage of the Speedway Classic, and ticket pre-sales will begin in September with public on-sale expected in December.

“The Reds are excited to be the home team for this unforgettable first at the Bristol Motor Speedway," Reds president and CEO Phil Castellini said. "Thank you to Major League Baseball for making this groundbreaking game happen. We cannot wait for all of Reds Country to cheer on their Reds in this unique and historic setting.”

Among those in attendance, beyond local political dignitaries, were baseball legends Eric Davis and Chipper Jones, current NASCAR stars Chase Elliott and Ross Chastain, and former NASCAR Cup champion Kevin Harvick. Elliott (Braves) and Chastain (Reds) donned team jerseys after taking a couple of laps around the track.

Of course, the game will not be the only event. There will be additional fan experiences surrounding the contest, most notably a heavy music component. Bristol, which straddles the Tennessee-Virginia state line in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, is known as the “birthplace of country music."

“There’s going to be entertainment and music tied into this event in a way that we’ve never been able to do,” said Jeremiah Yolkut, MLB vice president of global events, “because of the scale of the venue. If you walk around this venue and you see some of the photos, some of the acts that have come through here over the years and some of the great moments, music will be a big part of that. And we’re excited to be able to showcase that right alongside baseball.”

For baseball fans who might be unfamiliar with stock car racing, Bristol carries every bit the weight in NASCAR that Wrigley Field or Fenway Park does in baseball. It’s been the site of some of the sport’s most iconic moments, and the beloved bullring prides itself on delivering some of the most exciting action in sports. Now it will host baseball, with a one-of-a-kind field setup inside the facility known as “the world’s fastest half-mile.”

“It is an honor for our organization to be a part of Major League Baseball’s Speedway Classic," Braves president and CEO Derek Schiller said. "Bristol Motor Speedway is sure to offer one of the most exciting and memorable experiences in our game’s history. We look forward to seeing tens of thousands of fans from across Braves Country gather in Bristol next August to cheer on our team in this iconic venue.”

The size and dimensions of the track were striking to people who had never been there before.

“One of my favorite things to do,” Caldwell said, “is the privilege to bring people in and let them see this place for the first time. Because you’ll bring folks that have done it all. They’ve been all over the world, played in major events, and to be able to see the size of this place, it’s just massive, there’s nothing else like it in the world.”

Gov. Bill Lee, among others, made the point that although Tennessee does not have a Major League team, it is baseball country. The state prides itself on its baseball history and accomplishments. The University of Tennessee, located in nearby Knoxville, is the reigning Men’s College World Series champion for the first time in program history, and the list of Major League players from the state includes Mookie Betts, Evan Carter, Sonny Gray, Robbie Ray and Brent Rooker. The state is home to four current Minor League teams: the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts (Reds), Triple-A Nashville Sounds (Brewers), Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals) and Double-A Tennessee Smokies (Cubs).

One driver stands above the rest as the favorite to win this weekend, which should inspire you to capitalize on the powerful Hollywood Casino 400 betting promos we have detailed.

To no one’s surprise, Kyle Larson is regarded as the man to beat on Sunday. Not only did he dominate last week’s race in Bristol, Larson took the checkered flag the last time NASCAR raced at Kansas Speedway.

Of course, Larson didn’t necessarily dominate that race on May 5. He beat Chris Buescher to the line by .001 of a second — the narrowest victory margin in NASCAR history. We mention this to suggest there are other worthy candidates you can bet on this weekend, and doing so with bonus bets or first-bet protection afforded by the best NASCAR betting promos is a great way to go. Last September, for example, Tyler Reddick edged Denny Hamlin to win at Kansas Speedway while Larson finished fourth.

So, find the NASCAR betting offers you like on this page, sign up and enjoy what promises to be an incredible drive to the finish of the NASCAR playoffs.
