Get ready: The romance of Vivian and Edward is coming to a stage near you! We all know “Pretty Woman,” the movie. Now there’s “Pretty Woman: The Musical,” and critics are loving it.

The touring Broadway production is coming to two Alabama stages, in Huntsville and Birmingham.

You will find one change, however. Huntsville-Theater.com says: “… the creators of this upcoming musical know the original storyline won’t go down to well with modern audiences. Therefore, the Vivian we once knew will now be a stronger and a more independent heroine for the 21st century.”

How to find tickets

The touring company of “Pretty Woman: The Musical” is coming first to the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center for eight performances from April 30-May 5, 2024.

The show then comes to the Concert Hall in Huntsville’s Von Braun Center for five performances May 10-12, 2024.

Find tickets at Vivid Seats | Ticketmaster | StubHub | SeatGeek .

Of course, the other change to the script is a list of incredible musical numbers.

The show broke records during its Broadway run and won three awards from the Broadway.com Audience Awards.

Lorna Courtney aka Juliet twirls her hair at center stage.

Everyone knows how “Romeo and Juliet” tragically ends.

In “& Juliet,” William Shakespeare’s classic play is reimagined with a twist.

The musical, currently running at New York City’s Stephen Sondheim Theatre , envisions a world from Anne Hathaway’s perspective where Juliet (spoiler!) doesn’t die and lives a full life of her own told through popular, contemporary Max Martin-produced hits like “Since U Been Gone,” “…Baby One More Time” and “Larger Than Life” that weave through the narrative.

“It was inclusive, entertaining, and enjoyable,” the New York Post’s Victoria Giardina said after attending the lively show.

“And I loved how funny the characters were. However, I’d say it’s best for those 18 and up due to some cheeky and more mature references.”

If this sounds like the feel-good Broadway show for you, tickets are available for all upcoming performances.

At the time of publication, prices start at $100 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Based on our findings, most other shows have tickets starting in the $105 to $150 neighborhood before fees.

Want to catch the show-stopping musical live?

We’ve got everything you need to know and more about “& Juliet” below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

“& Juliet” tickets 2024

Opening night for “& Juliet” was way back in November 2022.

Now that the musical is a well-oiled machine it runs eight times a week including three matinees on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

As expected, the Stephen Sondheim Theatre goes dark on Mondays.

For those who want to find the show that makes the most sense for their schedule — and wallets (!) —  take a look at a complete “& Juliet” calendar here .

Note: “& Juliet” runs two hours and 30 minutes including one intermission.

“& Juliet” cast

Should you attend the show and want to identify what movie or TV series you’ve seen that actor in before, we’re here to help.

Below, you’ll find a quick bio of the musical’s five principal cast members.

Lorna Courtney (Juliet) is a Queens native and received a Best Actress Tony nomination for her work in the role. You may also recognize her from “Dear Evan Hansen” on Broadway and CBS’ “The Equalizer.”

David Bedella (Lance) originated the role of Lance DuBois on the West End where he was awarded his third Laurence Olivier Award. Notable film and TV roles include “Batman Begins,” “Argylle” and “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.”

Betsy Wolfe (Anne) has done it all. If she looks familiar from Broadway, it’s possible you saw her in “Waitress,” “Falsettos” or “Bullets Over Broadway.” Cinephiles may have seen her in “The Last Five Years” or “Tales Of The City.”

Austin Scott (Shakespeare) made his Broadway debut in “Hamilton.” He works regularly in film and TV as well; Scott co-starred in Tyler Perry’s “A Jazzman’s Blues” for Netflix and showed up in “Pose,” “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” and “Sistas.” Soon, he’ll appear in the FX Limited Series “The Sterling Affairs” as Blake Griffin.

Justin David Sullivan (May) dedicates their performance to every queer, trans, non-binary, or person of color in the audience. “808,” a short film starring Sullivan, is currently in post-production.

‘Uncle Vanya’ Review: Steve Carell Fits Seamlessly Into a Stellar Ensemble in a Gorgeous Broadway Revival

Uncle Vanya review Steve Carell Broadway

Director Lila Neugebauer sets Lincoln Center Theater’s starry, breathtaking new Broadway production of Anton Chekhov’s “ Uncle Vanya ” in current-day America rather than Russia around 1898, the year the play was written. There’s a baseball cap and a backpack with dayglow tape; pills are in plastic bottles with childproof caps; when someone runs out of ink while paying bills, they look for a new pen. What a difference 126 years can make!

Popular on Variety

As for the plot, a group of smart, interesting people, mostly family, have been living on a working farm for many years. The farm is owned by young Sonia (Pill), who works it, very happily, with her middle-aged uncle, Vanya (Carell). Her late mother — Vanya’s sister — owned the farm originally, which is why Vanya lives there with his own mother, Sonia’s feminist grandmother (Jayne Houdyshell); Sonia’s godfather (Jonathan Hadary); and her nanny (Mia Katigbak), who takes care of the meals and the house.

That is, until a month ago, when Sonia’s father, the famous art writer Alexander (Molina), arrived from the city with his beautiful young wife, Yelena (Rose). That distraction — the self-involved, old egotist and the beautiful young woman — has destroyed the peace of the house, driving the original members of the community pretty much crazy and rendering them useless. Vanya hates Alexander and lusts after Yelena; Astrov loves Yelena and comes to the house every day to be around her, fanning the flames of Sonia’s love for him. Yelena’s in love with Astrov, too, because he’s great: He’s a doctor, and in his spare time he plants trees on his land, fighting the good fight against deforestation. No one can sleep, everyone’s drinking too much, bills are piling up, and the triggers are coming so fast and furious that violence seems inevitable.

All of these characters and their various feelings about each other are understandable. Who isn’t wildly attracted to beauty and hasn’t behaved badly to be near it? Who doesn’t dislike selfish, self-involved old men?  Who hasn’t felt they were wasting their time doing pointless tasks for stupid people? Who wouldn’t love a guy who’d spent his time and energy trying to keep trees alive?

Well, this play could, in fact, be a stiff, empty, misanthropic soap opera in lesser hands. But with Heidi Schreck’s gorgeous, colloquial translation, and a flawless, fully engaged ensemble cast, the play is as entertaining as it is heartbreaking and profound.

Carell gets top billing, but he doesn’t strut his stuff the way many stars would, instead fitting seamlessly into this fascinating family. His character is a good, funny man who hasn’t lived the life he imagined he would and, for a moment, finds someone to blame. Who can’t relate to that?

And Harper, as the healer Astrov, who drinks too much to keep his self-hatred at bay, is utterly delightful. It feels like these actors — along with Molina, Pill and Rose — have been rehearsing for months, they’re so comfortable in their roles, and make their characters and their suffering so deeply relatable.

The icing on the cake here is Mimi Lien’s set design, Lap Chi Chu and Elizabeth Harper’s lighting, and even Mikhail Fiksel and Beth Lake’s sound, which create a sense of glistening, wide-open space, as if all this action were occurring in a kind of heavenly place. It makes the characters’ existences seem special — almost celestial — and their grievances petty, yes, but also part of the beauty and sublimity of this momentary life.

This is the brilliance of this play as rendered by Schreck, Neugebauer, and the entire cast: It shows us that while we have no choice but to go on, despite the frightening state of the world and our own inevitable demise, we could, if we took the hint, recognize how lucky we are.

Your English teacher would hate this ‘Great Gatsby’

A new broadway musical is all about jay gatsby’s decadence.

broadway in tour

The orgiastic delights of Jay Gatsby’s parties mostly lurk between the lines of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s clipped prose. But there is nothing coy about the extravagant stage musical that opened Thursday at the Broadway Theatre, where a cascade of visual splendors showers the eye like a fire hose. When actual sparks rain down on the first soiree, toss any hankering for subtlety out the window.

Directed by Marc Bruni with the broadness of a 10-lane highway, “The Great Gatsby” is a grand, crowd-pleasing spectacle: Tourists, Jazz Age enthusiasts and fans of its vocal-powerhouse stars Eva Noblezada and Jeremy Jordan are already lining up outside the stage door. And there is something to be said for a splashy night out, even if it casts off the author’s intended message.

The Style section

To the likely dismay of your high school English teacher, any critique of material excess, social disparities or the American Dream that has made the book a classroom staple gets stripped here in deference to a swoony and ill-fated love story. This isn’t a high-society tragedy set against the dawn of modernity but a rom-com that nose-dives into overwrought melodrama.

Midwestern fish-out-of-water Nick Carraway is a clear-eyed audience surrogate: Amid an assembly of mild caricatures, Noah J. Ricketts gives an admirable and firm-footed performance. The subjects of his narration, prose mostly lifted from Fitzgerald, all seem to know they are part of a Great Big Story, even as they appear to be plucked from a hodgepodge of genres.

His cousin Daisy (Noblezada) is fluttering and giggly but vaguely unhappy when we meet her in a lofty drawing room with windows overlooking Long Island Sound (the elaborate, projection-enhanced Art Deco set is by Paul Tate dePoo III). “God, I’ve made it,” Daisy sings, draped in a cropped and diaphanous cotton-candy dress, “I’m so sophisticated.” (The lavish costumes are by Linda Cho.) The lyrics by Nathan Tysen generally relay backstory and circumstance, whether or not they’re tinged with emotion.

Daisy’s husband Tom (John Zdrojeski), her ticket to this fabulous life, is the philandering brute she knows him to be. But the couple’s durable if brittle bond, forged in old-money breeding — so integral to the narrative’s structure — is imperceptible from the start. The audience is clearly meant to ask, “Why is she with this guy?” as a precursor to, “Now look at this dreamboat!”

That would be the debonair Gatsby (Jordan), sapped of mystery and crooning in wistful high registers about the one who slipped through his fingers but is now within reach. Jason Howland’s music, serviceable Broadway pop without much distinct flavor (not even jazz, that low-hanging fruit), excels at soaring ballads, allowing both Jordan and Noblezada to demonstrate considerable vocal gymnastics.

Book writer Kait Kerrigan exalts the central romance into a reunion of true loves torn apart by wartime, like something out of “ The Notebook .” Characters and their motivations are fleshed out for the purpose of moralizing infidelities and making their tragic ends feel less random. Gatsby is so smitten he can hardly stand upright; Daisy has a song about longing to remain faithful until she’s drawn over the edge.

Tom’s mistress Myrtle (Sara Chase) and her aggrieved husband George (Paul Whitty) are figured as cartoonish avatars of the working class with thick New Yawk accents whose fates are intertwined with the wealthy set by both love and money. There is even a juiced-up romantic plot between Nick and the steely Jordan Baker, played by Samantha Pauly (like Ricketts, another grounding presence). The two skeptics, vaguely queer-coded as in the novel, also can’t help but fall for each other.

Sharp. Witty. Thoughtful. Sign up for the Style Memo newsletter.

This revisionary attempt to turn “The Great Gatsby” into a clown car of passionate entanglements skids off the road when calamity is meant to strike. The second-act twists play out with the frenzy of a nighttime soap by Aaron Spelling, without any of the campy self-awareness. There is no ghastly reckoning with the follies of hedonism, just a rapid succession of abrupt ends.

Fitzgerald’s chic but sobering cautionary tale has been bubbling up frequently onstage since entering the public domain in 2021: There was an immersive take in a Manhattan hotel last year, and a pre-Broadway tryout of “ Gatsby ,” with music by Florence Welch, begins performances in Boston next month. There’s never been a bad time for the author’s sidelong glance at capitalism and the single-minded pursuit of pleasure — provided one isn’t already blinded by them.

Things To Do

Subscriber only, theater | with ‘mrs. doubtfire’ comes unexpected heart and humor, dearie | review.

In the touring company of "Mrs. Doubtfire," Axel Bernard Rimmele, left, Giselle Gutierrez, Rob McClure and Kennedy Alexandra Pitney perform. (Courtesy Joan Marcus)

Confession time: I have never seen “ Mrs. Doubtfire ,” the hit comedy film in which Robin Williams’ divorced dad character dresses up like an elderly Scottish nanny and tricks his ex-wife (played by Sally Field) into hiring him, just so he can spend more time with his children.

That Cliff’s Notes description of the plot never inspired me to check out the film, which was released in 1993. (I know, where have I been?)

A staged musical version of the movie debuted on Broadway in 2021, and it’s now touring the country. As seen at a stop in Tampa this month, maybe I’ve been missing out all these years. Or maybe a Broadway musical is just a great way to mix so much humor with so much heart.

Unexpectedly, the touring production of “Mrs. Doubtfire” charmed me, from Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick’s tuneful songs to Rob McClure’s nicely layered performance as a father who knows he has messed up but wants to be there for his kids.

Maggie Lakis and Rob McClure play divorced parents in the touring production of "Mrs. Doubtfire." (Courtesy Joan Marcus via the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts)

McClure also starred on Broadway in the role, and I’m sure there will be movie buffs who will find him perhaps a pale imitation of Williams. But, knowing what I know of Williams’ work in general, it seemed to me that McClure smartly pays tribute to Williams while making the role his own.

Or rather, the two roles.

McClure starts out as Daniel Hillard, who loses custody of his children in a not truly nasty but also not exactly cordial divorce with Miranda, who has long felt unheard by her responsibility-challenged spouse.

When Daniel finds out Miranda is hiring a nanny for the three kids he longs to see, he on-the-spot creates the fictitious Mrs. Doubtfire and applies for the position. Thanks to help from his brother and brother’s husband, who are professional costumers and makeup artists, Daniel is transformed into the grandmotherly Mrs. D, gets the job and becomes part of the family.

Daniel (Rob McClure, right, as his alter ego) doesn't approve of handsome Stuart (Leo Roberts) moving in on his ex-wife In "Mrs. Doubtfire," (Courtesy Joan Marcus)

Some of those transformations happen right onstage, and there is a measure of fun in watching McClure jump in and out of the spot-on and cleverly designed padded costume (by Catherine Zuber) and gray-haired wig (by David Brian Brown) in a succession of quick changes.

Critically, McClure is likable both as screwup Daniel and as no-nonsense Mrs. Doubtfire. In fact, just about everyone radiates warmth. As Miranda, Maggie Lakis is understandably a little more frayed around the edges but her chilliness is understandable and Lakis comes up a winner in an emotional and big-voiced “Let Go,” an Act 2 highlight.

Leo Roberts takes on the movie’s Pierce Brosnan role of Miranda’s new, seemingly perfectly hunky boyfriend, and he has the baritone and biceps to fit the bill. Even he is rootable in the smart way Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell have constructed the musical’s book.

Young Orlando actor comes home in ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ tour

Not everything works. A running gag about shouting when lying gets old fast. In fact, director Jerry Zaks lets several characters — and not the children, I might add — shout too much. (Loud is not synonymous with funny, after all.)

But then there are unexpected delights in the show’s big numbers, the kind of silliness that makes a musical comedy a musical comedy: A daffy fashion parade of random celebrities, a flamboyant tango number, a posse of chefs emerging from YouTube to tap dance while teaching how to spatchcock a chicken. (That’s not relevant to the plot; I just wanted to get “tap dance” and “spatchcock” in the same sentence; when will that ever happen again?)

Rob McClure as Mrs. Doubtfire gets some help in the kitchen from a team of dancing chefs and a Rachael Ray lookalike. (Courtesy Joan Marcus)

Yes, Internet cooking tutorials are part of the story, which clearly has been updated (and all for the best) since the film’s release. Harry Styles, Taylor Swift and Siri all get name-dropped at one point or another. I’ve written about Orlando’s Axel Bernard Rimmele , who plays one of the three children in the cast; unfortunately, his alternate was onstage at my performance. But all three children I saw were talented and naturally funny, without going for sitcom “too cute” or precociousness.

Their comic but appealingly sincere number “What the Hell” besides being well-performed also wisely lets the youngsters share their point of view with the audience, including children who may be experiencing the same feelings.

It’s actually unfair to call all three children. Responsible eldest daughter Lydia, who “feels older than Dad,” is played by a young woman — who also has a local connection. Plant City native Giselle Gutierrez, a sophomore at the University of Central Florida, beautifully succeeds in making her teen character seem legitimately angry and not stagey angry. She brings a lovely realness of emotion in her singing, as well, and a voice that fits both her character and the songs.

Rob McClure stars in the national tour of "Mrs. Doubtfire," now playing at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando. (Courtesy Joan Marcus)

As with many musicals, the second act lacks the nonstop zing of the first, as the plot has to be dealt with, but even the ending you see coming from a mile away can’t diminish the show’s obvious but not heavy-handed messages: Families come in many varieties, change can result in something better, and always look for love to lead the way.

Alicia Keys on Reimagining ‘Fallin’’ for Broadway

The singer talks about finding a new home for her first hit..

Produced by Alex Barron

Edited by Lynn Levy

Featuring Michael Paulson

Engineered by Daniel Ramirez

Alicia Keys was only 20 years old when her 2001 single “Fallin’” became an international sensation, topping the Billboard charts, winning multiple Grammys and helping propel her to stardom. Now, more than two decades later, the song appears in the new Broadway musical “Hell’s Kitchen.”

The show — which draws from Keys’s life story and her discography — presents ”Fallin’” in a totally new way: as a song of seduction sung by a middle-aged man. Keys joins our theater reporter, Michael Paulson, to discuss the history of “Fallin’” and what she has learned from adapting the song for the stage.

NPR's Scott Simon speaks to Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin, who star in the new Broadway revival of "Cabaret."

SCOTT SIMON, HOST:

You probably recognize the music from the first notes.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "WILLKOMMEN")

EDDIE REDMAYNE: (As Emcee, singing) Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome. Fremde, etranger, stranger.

SIMON: "Cabaret," the 1966 Broadway musical by Joe Masteroff, John Kander and Fred Ebb. It's drawn from Christopher Isherwood's memoir of high times and hot jazz and is set in a fictional Berlin nightspot called the Kit Kat Club.

REDMAYNE: (As Emcee, singing) Im Cabaret, au Cabaret, to Cabaret.

SIMON: At a time when sequins, high-stepping flappers and forbidden love gives way to goose-stepping and beating Jews on the street. A new revival of "Cabaret" has opened on Broadway after winning seven Olivier Awards in London. Eddie Redmayne plays the Emcee, and he joins us from New York. May I say willkommen to you?

REDMAYNE: You may indeed. Hi.

SIMON: And Gayle Rankin the British chanteuse who comes to Berlin. I get to say fraulein Sally Bowles.

GAYLE RANKIN: Hello, darling (laughter). I had to (laughter).

SIMON: Oh, my gosh. Wait. Sorry. Let me just catch my heart for a moment. Thanks so much.

SIMON: Eddie Redmayne, you've played the Emcee before. I was about to say early in your career, but really, before you started your career.

REDMAYNE: That's absolutely true. Yes, I was a kid. I was at high school when I - we did a little school production. I think I was about 14, 15 years old. It was one of those moments in my life where I would say really I fell in love with theater. It thrilled me, and it made me think, and it moved me. And so I always sort of credit it weirdly as being the thing that that got me into acting full and proper.

SIMON: What does the Emcee do for the audience?

REDMAYNE: I think one of the reasons the Emcee is such a iconic role and one that so many actors lean into is he's so enigmatic. He was conjured by Hal Prince and Joel Grey as a way of connecting the Sally Bowles story, and so he almost lives in an abstract place. And so for an actor, that is joyous because there are sort of no limitations on the one hand, and it's also quite daunting. He sort of starts as a puppeteer almost, the kind of the Shakespearian fool, perhaps...

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "TWO LADIES")

REDMAYNE: (As Emcee) Come on, my little ones.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #1: (As character, singing) Beedle dee, deedle dee, dee.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTORS: (As characters, singing) Beedle dee, deedle dee, dee.

REDMAYNE: (As Emcee, singing) Beedle dee, deedle dee, beedle dee, deedle dee.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #2: (As character, singing) Beedle dee, deedle dee, dee.

REDMAYNE: (Singing) Two ladies.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #2: (As characters, singing) Beedle dee, dee dee dee.

REDMAYNE: ...Who then, over the course of the piece, rises to the all-knowing king or the sort of from puppeteer to conductor, and he becomes rather than the victim, he's almost the perpetrator. And so this person that's hopefully pulled you in at the beginning of the evening and seduced you and made you laugh, you realize is actually conducting the entire piece.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "IF YOU COULD SEE HER")

REDMAYNE: (As Emcee, singing) If could see her through my eyes, she wouldn't look Jewish at all.

SIMON: And Gayle Rankin, you have played other roles in "Cabaret" before Sally Bowles, haven't you?

RANKIN: I have. I made my Broadway debut, actually, playing Fraulein Kost in the Sam Mendes revival 10 years ago with Alan and Michelle and Emma Stone. Eddie and I were just talking about it just the other day, and he was like, is this so weird? Is it so weird? And I was like, you know what? It's not weird. It's not weird. And it doesn't - I feel like a new person and in a new world 'cause that's - you know, "Cabaret," it comes back, and the world is new a decade later. It's new, and it's also the same.

SIMON: Help us look inside of Sally's mind and heart. What brings her to Berlin in the early '30s?

RANKIN: You know, there's not a lot that's given to us, you know, about Sally.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "MEIN HERR")

RANKIN: (As Sally Bowles, singing) But I do what I can, inch by inch, step by step, mile by mile.

For me, it was very important for me to kind of figure out Sally's relationship to artistry and creativity and why she ended up at the club. And there's a huge, you know, kind of cultural discussion about whether Sally has talent or whether she does not have talent. And that's a really fascinating thing, I think, to me. And I think it's amazing how people think they can decide or that they know that she's not - quote-unquote, "not talented" or is talented. It's just wild to me.

SIMON: I have to ask. There are so many famous names who have played the two parts into which you two step now - Dame Judi Dench, Natasha Richardson, Michelle Williams. Alan Cumming, Joel Grey have played the Emcee. I didn't even mention the film with Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey, now, did I? So do previous productions inspire you, or do you just have to, you know, leave them in the fridge?

REDMAYNE: I've been such a passionate fan of "Cabaret" since I was a kid that I've seen everything in the sense that I've - you can see some of Sam's production on YouTube. I saw Sam's production with Emma and Alan. I've watched the film. I even saw a random Spanish version when I was...

RANKIN: Oh.

REDMAYNE: ...Younger. And they've been so brilliant, the productions before, that I hope we come sort of standing on their shoulders and with great respect for them, but also trying to do something new and fresh. And one of the things that was important for me was that idea - one of the Emcee's first lines is leave your troubles outside, and that for audience members coming to see this in New York, you enter via a sort of back alley.

You get taken down into the underbelly of the theater, where there is an entire cast of performers playing in these really beautiful spaces, and you get a bit discombobulated. It's labyrinthine, and you get sort of lost, so that by the time you are taken actually into the theater itself, which sits in the round, hopefully, you have genuinely left all memory of 52nd Street outside.

SIMON: I got to say, your production reached through to me with something I hadn't quite realized before. Things are terrible and getting worse on the streets. They're beating Jews and putting them into ghettos. There's a refuge in the club. There's also a refuge in Fraulein Schneider's boardinghouse, where she, for the first time in her life, really has a relationship with a man who happens to be a fruit seller and a Jewish man. Both your characters have that refuge in the club, and they have their characters in the boardinghouse. But, you know, refuges - well, real life can bring them down, can't they?

REDMAYNE: Absolutely. And I feel like the play, in its essence, is a warning in some ways. It serves as a warning about when hate can take over humanity and when humanity is lost to hate. And that feels so relevant at this moment. There are so many examples of that throughout the world today, but I hope that the brilliance of what Kander, Ebb and Masteroff created was that it seduces you in and in a way that feels really sort of magnificent but then begins to touch on these - this repetition of history that resounds and serves as a warning.

RANKIN: And it kind of - what's so scary about it is how the refuge is created, and then you slowly realize that actually, there's a poison inside of your refuge.

SIMON: What do you take in from the audience every night?

REDMAYNE: Well, I mean, one of the joys for me as a performer is the intimacy of the space. So there's not really a sort of a bad seat in the house at the August Wilson, and the other character in the room with the Emcee is the audience. And what I have loved about our experience in New York is people because it's an event almost, the evening, from the second you pass the threshold. The theater's been redesigned and reconfigured in a way. People are getting dressed up. So you have people in black tie next to people in fetish gear next to people in jeans and a T-shirt, and you get all sorts of characters.

RANKIN: And to have a relationship with the audience, you know, and to enjoy how fun...

REDMAYNE: Yeah.

RANKIN: ...This is and can be throughout the show till the very end - what is written in this piece, there's - we're still laughing through tears at a certain point toward - for the very end of the show, and that's what's so kind of timeless and important about this space, that there's something that doesn't die inside of our club.

SIMON: Gayle Rankin and Eddie Redmayne star in the new production of "Cabaret" on Broadway. Thank you both so much for being with us.

REDMAYNE: Thanks for having us.

RANKIN: Thank you so much.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "TOMORROW BELONGS TO ME")

REDMAYNE: (As Emcee, singing) The sun on the meadow is summery warm. The stag in the forest runs free.
