First timer’s guide to Broadway | All you need to know

Things to do in New York Broadway Broadway Playbook

Broadway New York City

Broadway is both the name of the general area where many historical performance venues in New York City are housed and the theatrical performances hosted in the venues themselves. One of the most vibrant and culturally rich parts of New York City, Broadway has become synonymous with the city itself. In fact, Broadway, along with London's West End , represents the highest level of commercial live theatre in the world.

The origins of Broadway in New York City can be traced back to 1750 when the first theatre company was established by Thomas Kean and Walter Murray. In 1798, after the Revolutionary War ended, a new, 2000 seat theater - The Park Theatre, was constructed. The success of The Park led to the construction of many other theatres in the 19th century. At the start of the 20th century, musicals became popular and many of the theatres that are still running were constructed.

The Theater District is home to a majority of the 41 Broadway theatres and is a must-visit when in the city. Featuring majestic theatres, bright billboards, and dazzling lights - the Theater District makes for an unforgettable experience. Your trip to the Big Apple isn't complete without attending at least one Broadway show. There's something about the experience of watching performances live on a Broadway theatre that cannot be replicated elsewhere. If you're planning to watch a Broadway show, we have put together a first timer's guide to Broadway to make your experience memorable.

Broadway Glossary

Here are some terms you’re likely to hear/see through the course of your New York Broadway experience.

  • Opening Night: An official opening night is the first performance of a play or musical after the preview performances are over. After the opening night, there are no changes in the production and reviews are only published for opening night performances and beyond.
  • Orchestra: The ground level of seating in any Broadway theatre, which is closest to stage. Seats in this section are amongst the most expensive in the house.
  • Mezzanine: The first elevated seating section in a theatre, hanging over the orchestra, the mezzanine offers great views of the staging.
  • Balcony: Available only in bigger Broadway theatres, the balcony is the last seating section in any theatre and us furthest away from the stage.
  • House : In Broadway terms, the house can either refer to the entire auditorium or just the front of the house, including the lobby and box office.
  • Intermission: Intermission is a break, generally lasting 15 to 20 minutes, strategically placed in productions with a longer duration. You can visit the washroom or get something to eat or drink during the intermission.
  • Box Office: The box office is the place where you can purchase tickets for a particular performance. Generally, the box office is located close to the entrance of a theatre.
  • Will Call: Will Call refers to ticket sales at a theatre's box office where you can pick-up pre-purchased tickets for a performance.
  • SRO: SRO or Standing Room Only is used to describe tickets that do not have a designated seat and may require you to stand during the performance.
  • Break a Leg!: Instead of good luck, performers on Broadway wish each other luck by saying, 'Break a leg!'. When you wish someone 'break a leg' you're wishing them thunderous applause.

First Timer’s Guide To Broadway NYC

Before buying your broadway show tickets.

Broadway First Timer's Guide

Your Broadway experience begins with choosing a show to watch. Just like any other form of entertainment, Broadway boasts a wide range of genres across both plays and musicals. From fantasy and romance to drama and comedy, there's a show available for every taste. To make your first Broadway experience special, picking the right show is very important. Figure out what genre works for you, indulge in a little online research about the shows currently playing, and make your pick. For instance, if you're planning to watch a Broadway show with your family, you can pick Disney classics like Aladdin or The Lion King . If you're on a date, something romantic like The Phantom of the Opera would be ideal.

Once you've picked the show you want to watch, it's time to focus on the theatre. There are certain considerations you need to be mindful of before booking your seats, especially if you’re visiting with aged folks. For instance, does the theatre have an escalator or lift? Is the theatre wheelchair accessible? How many steps are there to the balcony or mezzanine sections? More importantly, you need to be aware of the theatre's seating chart so that you can pick the best seat according to your requirements. Being aware of other smaller things like obstructed view seats, premium seats and more will help you have a great first Broadway experience. Check out our Broadway Theatre Seating Guide and pick the right seats for your show.

Once your pre-show research is done, you'll need to book your tickets. There are many ways to book Broadway tickets. The easiest way to do so is through a show or theatre's official website . If you aren't comfortable with online transactions, you can also visit the theatre's box office and book your tickets there. Alternatively, you can make use of third-party apps like Headout to book your Broadway tickets online. These apps generally offer great discounts and cashback offers on Broadway tickets among other customers-friendly benefits. If you're looking for last-minute Broadway tickets, you can try visiting the TKTS booth in Times Square or opt for SRO tickets, if available. https://www.headout.com/blog/broadway-show-tickets/

On The Day Of Your Broadway Show

Broadway First Timer's Guide

Part of the fun of attending a Broadway show is the experience of it all. Walking through centuries old halls of the theatre, ornately decorated with a decidedly old-school vibe to watch plays and musicals written years ago; Broadway is a truly unique experience. Join in on the fun by wearing dresses and suits. While there's no decreed dress code, your experience will surely be elevated if you play around and dress up for your first Broadway show.

The food and refreshments available at all Broadway theatres are exorbitantly priced. We would recommend having a quick bite at any of the fabulous restaurants available in the Theatre District and Times Square before the show begins. Trust us, paying $20 for a champagne flute is not worth it. Check out the best theatre district restaurants in New York.

Here's the thing about Broadway shows — they always begin on time. To accommodate this punctuality, the security checks and luggage drop starts around 30 minutes before the show's starting time. To avoid missing the opening of the show, plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before showtime. This will give you enough time to go through security, deposit any bags or luggage, if needed and make your way to your seat. Keeping New York City's traffic in mind, it's advisable to leave your place much in advance. Most Broadway theatres are extremely strict about late entry and if you're late, you'll be seated at the theatre staff's discretion.

Get a good peek at the theatre seating chart before you arrive. This will help you find your seats easily and also locate the right entrance. Broadway theatres don't have the most leg space and you wouldn't want to trouble the patrons already sitting by going through the wrong rows. If you're having trouble locating your seat, you can always reach out to the theatre staff for assistance. They'll guide you to your seat in no time! Also, if you've pre-purchased your tickets, you don't need to stand in line at the box office. Make your way to the Will Call window and collect your tickets.

All Broadway theatres have a seating capacity of more than 500 and only a couple of restrooms for patrons. This leads to long queues at the restrooms both before the show begins and during the intermission. To avoid wasting your time standing in a queue, visit the restroom before the show starts or better yet before you enter the theatre itself.

During The Show

Performing live in front of a big audience is no easy task and takes a lot of focus and dedication. To enable the actors to perform without any distractions, you should put your phones on silent. Imagine your phone going off during the emotional climax of a play. Ruins the whole experience, doesn't it?

Just like a movie theatre, you shouldn't take videos and photos during a Broadway performance. There are some theatres with less severe restrictions on photos but if it's announced that photos and videos are not allowed and you're still caught with your phone, you'll probably be asked to leave the theatre.

At the end of the day, Broadway makes for a remarkable experience. Make your first Broadway viewing experience special by keeping the points mentioned above in mind. Once the show begins, all you have to do is sit back and marvel at the amazing performances and sets on display.

After Your Broadway Show

Had an amazing first Broadway experience? Fortunately, there's more of where that came from! With 41 officially classified Broadway theatres and smaller Off-Broadway theatres as well, there's no dearth of shows to watch. Just pick your next show, book Broadway tickets online, and continue your Broadway journey.

Broadway Theatre Etiquettes You Must Know Of

Here are some common theatre etiquettes you're expected to follow when attending a Broadway performance:

  • Applaud after a musical performance or at the end of an act.
  • Avoid talking during the performance as it's majorly distracting to the performers. If you're watching a show with a young child, explain the story to them before the show starts.
  • While you might be tempted to do so, don't sing-along during musical numbers, unless the performers encourage the audience to do so of course!
  • While at the theatre, keep your opinion of the show neutral or positive, even if you didn't like the show. Putting together a Broadway show is no child's play and you don't want to be rude by openly criticizing the show.

Check out our complete list of Broadway theatre etiquettes that you may not have known!

Tips For First Timers on Broadway

  • Avoid bringing large backpacks or shopping bags to the theatre since rows in a Broadway theatre are generally very close together. Since the seats are snug, there isn't enough space to house big bags. Your bags will be checked at the entrance so the less baggage, the sooner you can move past the security.
  • Make it a point to reach the theatre at least 30-40 minutes before the scheduled time. Most theatres don't allow late seating anymore, which means you’ll have to watch the show on a monitor in the lobby until intermission or the first break.
  • Upon entering the theatre, you'll be provided with a Playbill with performance information. In some cases, the Playbill includes a note from the director that contextualizes what you’re about to see. The Playbill also contains details about the number of acts in the show, the duration of the intermission and any last-minute cast changes. You can also find fantastic restaurant recommendations close to the theatre, for a post-show drink or snack.
  • If you're bringing bags to your seats, place them securely under your seat and make sure they don't stick out, especially if you're sitting in an aisle seat. This is because, in some shows, the performers use the aisles for entrance and exit. If your bag sticks out too much, the performers could trip and fall.
  • Unwrapping any eatables, including candies, mints, and snacks, can be a noisy affair. The crinkling of the wrapper can really spoil the performances for others around you and the actors as well. To avoid this, unwrap the eatables before the show begins.
  • In Broadway terms “sit back and relax,” mean actually sitting back. If you lean forward, you can block the view of the person behind you, which blocks the view of the person behind them when they adjust. It’s a domino effect you don’t want to be a part of.
  • Some Broadway shows boast live orchestras for the music played during shows. Generally, the orchestra sits in a pit below the stage. You can take a look at the musicians when walking to the front of the orchestra section.
  • The actors of a Broadway production exit through the stage door outside the theatre. You can meet them post-show and have them sign memorabilia or the Playbill. Get in touch with the ushers if you're having trouble locating the stage door.

Can you wear flip flops to a Broadway show?

Yes, you can wear flip flops to a Broadway show but it's not the best idea since Broadway theaters usually turn up the air conditioning. Your feet will be cold and you might be severely under-dressed.

Can you bring water into a Broadway show?

At most Broadway venues, you can pick up water, beverages (alcoholic and otherwise) and candy at the concession stand. Outside food and drinks aren't allowed inside.

How far is Times Square to East Broadway?

The distance between Times Square and East Broadway is 3 miles.

Can you bring backpacks to Broadway?

You can bring backpacks to a Broadway theatre but make sure they're not too big. You’ll need to stash them away at the counter.

What is the most expensive Broadway show?

Hamilton currently holds the record of being Broadway's most expensive show—ever.

What is the biggest theater on Broadway?

The Gershwin Theatre has the largest seating capacity of any Broadway theatre with 1,933 seats.

Where should I sit for a Broadway show?

The best seats are at least 4 or 5 rows back in the center up to about the 12th row in the orchestra. Most seats in the front mezzanine are also quite good.

Are Broadway balcony seats good?

In general, the first four or five rows of the balcony are usually as good as rear orchestra seats.

First time booking with Broadway…

First time I've booked through Broadway Travel and first time booking a cruise. My travel advisor called Chloe was amazing!! She went through everything thoroughly, especially knowing I had never booked a cruise before, I didn't feel rushed or pressured to make a decision. I left the conversation feeling excited and now I can't wait. Thank you to Chloe for your excellent customer service.

Booking was stressful!!

I was very disappointed with the time it took to complete booking. Despite all my detail being correct!!. I was informed that the credit card I was using did not match my address, it’s the card I always use and in fact have used it with broadway travel before. Iantha smith who was dealing with my booking had to discuss everything with her manager who was finishing early that day and was not available until later the next day. So completing the booking was stressful!!

Professional and quick to reply

I seen a few hotels advertised on Facebook. Was a little worried as never heard of the company. After speaking to Ian and confirming they are ATOL protected, I booked a river nile cruise. There was alot of phone calls and emails as I was planing this trip to suit my personal needs. Ian was very professional and quick to reply.

Very good record…

This is my third time using Broadway Travel to book a holiday in Madeira. On all of occasions it has proved seamless. Also, it is good to note that Broadway Travel provides prices that compare very favourably with competitors and, indeed, comes out about half the price of the hotel’s own website.

Great service and best price

We were looking at booking our first cruise holiday. Contacted several tour operators for quotes and advice. They were all very helpful but Chloe, from Broadway Travel, stood out head and shoulders above them and apart from providing the lowest cost she also made the experience fun and stress free.

WOW Poppy, this is fantastic to hear. We agree that our Cruise girls are leaps and bounds above the competitors and Chloe will be thrilled that you found her service so amazing. We will ensure Chloe and her manager see your very kind words. We all hope you have a wonderful time onboard and thank you for choosing Broadway Travel

Booked a holiday

Booked a holiday, next day get asked for a time to ring as there was a problem with flights , they rang after the time I’d given and told me the flights from Birmingham weren’t available but I could fly from Manchester for a considerable extra cost . I said as I was at work and it was after the time I’d given cancel the holiday . It has now taken another few days and them saying it’s another £340 to cancel the holiday .shocking , avoid Broadway travel

Good Morning Mr Robinson. Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback, and despite the content, we welcome the opportunity to address the issues raised. As you are aware, your holiday was booked online on 29 May at 22:50. Regretfully, due to an IT issue with the airline, the flight element was not confirmed. When we reopened the following morning, we tried numerous times to contact you to advise of the issue and find a solution. However, you requested a call back the following day between 12.30-13.30. Our agent called you at 13:33, 3 minutes later than requested, due to dealing with another customer. We advised of the issue and offered alternative flights and advised the cost involved. We appreciate that this situation was far from ideal, however we were trying to offer solutions to save your holiday, however you advised that we had called late and stated you would email and ended the call. Our management team managed to speak to the airline who resolved their IT issue and managed to get you booked on the original flights, as you personally booked online. We called you 3 times on 31 May at 16:41, 16:53 and 17:32 to advise of this. A voicemail was left on the last attempt to confirm that we had managed to get you on the Birmingham flights, and discounted your holiday, and confirmation was emailed to you at 17:38. Therefore, we are unsure why you have requested to cancel the holiday, as it is as you booked. However, if you do wish to continue with the cancellation request, then cancellation charges will apply as per our Terms & Conditions, which contrary to your claims, are fully legal and compliant. We have tried to contact you again this morning to discuss your concerns, however have been unable to reach you. We trust the above fully explains our position and of course we are happy to discuss this further verbally when you are free - Broadway Travel

Complete Guide to Planning the Best Broadway Trip to NYC

  • February 1, 2022
  • 10 minute read

If you love musical theater (or just theater in general), there’s one place in the world you absolutely have to visit at least once in your lifetime: New York City. But planning a trip to NYC and making it a Broadway trip – especially if it’s your first time – can be super intimidating. What shows should you see? How do you get around? Where can you eat, pre-show, so you’re close enough to not miss your show? Going to Broadway show alone can be scary… But it doesn’t have to be! Great news: planning a solo trip to New York for Broadway shows is basically my niche. It’s my bread-and-butter.

Okay, fine, I have a confession: I LOVE musical theater. Ever since I first discovered the cast recording of “Cats” (I know, I know) in high school, I have been straight-up obsessed with musical theater. But living in Amsterdam at the time meant there was very little access to theater: I could go to London (which I did, a few times), but seeing shows on Broadway was completely out of the question.

I always dreamt of going to New York to see Broadway shows, but for so many years, it seemed out of the question. Going to Broadway alone? Pfff. I had never even visited NYC solo. Most of my trips consisted of visits with friends, who knew the city better than me. Planning a trip to NYC just to see shows seemed daunting. I didn’t know where to start. It scared me, SO much. For years, I let that fear keep me in San Diego, even when I would see some of my favorite dream shows run on Broadway.

Things changed in 2015, when the Hamilton Broadway Cast Recording first came out. I listened for hours into the night when they released it on NPR for a first listen. After that, I made myself a promise: I was going to see Hamilton on Broadway.

broadway travel opening times

That first solo trip to NYC? I almost missed Hamilton because I got on the subway too late. Everyone judged me for flying to New York just to see a Broadway show.

But I didn’t let any of it scare me away. There is nothing as magical and wonderful as sitting in a Broadway theater: I was hooked. I ended up flying to New York for Broadway shows at least twice a year for the next several years. Like I said, this is my bread-and-butter. I’ve picked up a few tips along the way! If you want to plan a solo trip to NYC for Broadway shows, but have no idea where to start, don’t worry. It’s not as intimidating as it sounds. You can totally make it happen! Here’s all my best advice.

Don’t have time to read this post now? Pin it and save it for later!

How to plan your solo Broadway trip to New York City

To plan the perfect solo Broadway trip, and really maximize your time inside Broadway theaters, I’d recommend planning absolutely everything around the specific shows you want to see. What does this mean?

  • Pick shows you want to see. I lived in a city with a big touring Broadway schedule, so I would often try to avoid shows that would already be stopping by on tour and stick to shows that were brand-new.
  • Look up the performance schedule of each show
  • Understand when your flights to and from NYC will land and take off

Planning your NYC solo trip itinerary around your shows will make sure you can maximize your time in New York. But it’s not just about the shows: make sure to use Google Flights and price out different weekends. If it costs $100 less to fly one weekend versus the other, that flexibility will make a big difference with your budget. I often found cheap flights by checking every weekend. That’s how I bought a $200 round-trip flight from San Diego to NYC one December.

There is nothing as magical and wonderful as sitting in a Broadway theater: I was hooked.

Once you have your tickets, you can start looking for hotels and planning out the specifics. Let’s dive in!

When should you plan your solo Broadway trip?

Planning the perfect NYC Broadway solo trip involves understanding each Broadway show’s schedule. After all, you want to maximize your time in the city and see as many shows as possible (duh!)… including the best Broadway shows in NYC!

broadway travel opening times

Understanding the Broadway schedule

Most shows will go dark on Monday, meaning that there will be no performances on Mondays. There will be some notable exceptions. For example, when I visited in 2021 around Christmas, most shows had shifted their schedules to go dark around Christmas instead of the Monday prior.

You should also keep in mind that most shows will have two performances on Wednesdays and Saturdays. This means that you can easily see multiple shows on these days, so I always try to plan going to Broadway alone during these days to maximize my time. In addition, most shows will only have a matinee (afternoon) performance on Sundays.

When I visited NYC on my solo Broadway trips, I often would fly in on Saturday morning and immediately see two shows. I’d time my flight to leave right after the matinee on Sunday.

No matter how many days you have, it’s important to plan out exactly what shows will be open while you’re in NYC. And don’t forget to check if tickets are available!

How to get cheap tickets to popular Broadway shows

How do you get cheap tickets to Broadway shows? This is the million dollar question!!

When I went to see Hamilton on Broadway in 2016, just weeks before they won a record amount of Tony Awards , every single person asked me: how on EARTH did you get tickets?!

Well, I bought them eight months in advance, when people were only just catching on to the Hamilton-mania. At the time, my sixth row orchestra ticket cost me just $149. By the time I got to the show, tickets were going for $2,000 to $5,000 for Orchestra. THAT was insanity!

There’s no secret trick to getting cheap tickets – or any tickets – for popular Broadway and off-Broadway shows. Unfortunately, sometimes it just comes down to luck and following musical theater trends. In the past five years, Broadway shows have become so popular that it can be tricky to predict just what will blow up.

That being said, I do have a few tried-and-true techniques I use to find my favorite tickets.

When to buy tickets to popular Broadway shows

Snagging a ticket to Broadway’s most popular shows all comes down to timing. I’ve seen Dear Evan Hansen, Company, Assassins, Come From Away, Hadestown, Moulin Rouge! and so. much. more. All from just following openings and closings.

broadway travel opening times

If you know you want to see a certain show, plan on buying your ticket up to eight months in advance. Case in point: I bought my Company on Broadway ticket about eight months in advance. When Stephen Sondheim passed , tickets became basically impossible to get.

Here’s how I plan ahead and buy my Broadway tickets:

  • Follow Broadway-specific news sites to track when shows plan to come
  • Find out when tickets go on sale
  • Set a reminder
  • Buy tickets to the show right when they go on sale

If you plan to go to the show alone, you’ll have much more flexibility in finding those odd seats in between other parties that have been left behind. You can snag some great deals (and seats!) if you’re just looking for one ticket!

Most people will expect to buy tickets to shows like Hadestown or Company just a few days before they want to see the show – and while you might get lucky, most times the show will be sold out.

Where to buy tickets to popular Broadway shows

Going to a Broadway show alone allows you one great privilege: you can buy those amazing single seats in fantastic locations, all because you’re going alone.

Most Broadway tickets are sold through Ticketmaster and Telecharge . However, there are several third-party apps that I would recommend, especially if you’re looking to snag a deal. This is an especially great option if you’re looking to see some of the best Broadway shows for first timers , like Wicked !

These are my favorite apps for cheap tickets:

  • TodayTix (you can often buy tickets a few months in advance, at a discount)
  • The TKTS discount booth (for last minute tickets a few days in advance)

Hadestown the Musical on Broadway

How to get last-minute tickets to popular Broadway shows

If you want to risk it, you can also try getting last minute tickets to Broadway shows.

Why would you do this? If you haven’t managed to get a ticket to one of your top picks, many shows will often have some last-minute tickets available that they have set aside. If you’re willing to wait in line, you can snag a great discount.

There are three ways to get last-minute tickets:

  • RUSHing : RUSH tickets are on a first-come, first-serve basis. These tickets often get you a seat in the front row. For some popular shows, that might mean camping out for multiple hours to get a ticket.
  • Standing room only : Not every show will offer standing room only tickets, but they are the cheapest way to see shows. These tickets are exactly what they sound like: tickets to stand at the back of the theater and watch the show. Most of the time, only the most popular, sold-out Broadway shows will offer this service.
  • Lotteries : Shows will often have digital lotteries to give away tickets to their performances for a discounted price. Each show has their own policies.

Some shows will also have student ticket prices, so keep an eye out for that too.

Where to stay for your solo Broadway trip to NYC

Heading to NYC on a budget for your solo Broadway trip? I often had a strict budget when I was traveling to New York City. As a journalist working in San Diego, living expenses were high – and flights often accounted for most of my expenses.

If you have friends or relatives in New York City, consider asking them whether they might host you for a few days. This is the most budget-friendly option. When I visited New York City, I often stayed with my best friend, Katie, a fellow theater lover and lifesaver. We always had a tradition: get dinner, pick up cookies , and go see a show.

broadway travel opening times

Don’t have a friend in NYC? That’s completely fine! There are plenty of options around New York City, though options can get pricey if you book last-minute. Consider staying in these neighborhoods:

  • Upper West Side
  • Upper East Side
  • Tribeca and SoHo
  • East Village and Bowery
  • Greenwich Village
  • Meatpacking District and Chelsea

Looking for a deal? Here’s how to find great deals on accommodations in NYC:

  • Check multiple booking sites
  • Book as early as possible
  • If Manhattan is outside your price range, consider looking outside the city at Brooklyn and beyond

The most important factor when booking a place? Easy access to public transit. Seeing a Broadway show each night means coming home late and that can be uncomfortable – especially if you’re not familiar with NYC.

I have never really felt unsafe in New York, especially because there are always so many people around, but if you feel unsure, consider planning out your route in advance. You can check how you will get home, whether that means a subway or a bus or an Uber.

What to pack for your solo Broadway trip to NYC

Every time I visited New York City for a Broadway show, I packed less than the time before. If you’re traveling on a budget, you may not have more than a backpack. During every single one of my trips, I often only had a tiny North Face backpack. But you CAN make this work!

Here’s what you need to pack for a weekend trip:

  • Two shoes : one pair good for walking, and another that will work for a fancy night at the theater. You will wear the bulkier ones on the plane to save space.
  • 2 – 3 bottoms : my go-to is a pair of pants for the plane/walking around town, and two nicer bottoms that you can dress up for a night out.
  • 2 – 3 tops : Focus on bringing one or two shirts that you can dress up in and a sweater if you need. If I visited during the summer, I’d swap a shirt for a dress.
  • Undergarments : This is personal to you! Bring as many as you need for the duration of your trip.
  • Hygiene : I brought shampoo, conditioner and face wash in travel-sized containers. I’d often only bring a comb, a toothbrush, and toothpaste in addition to those essentials, and maybe some make-up if I needed it. Don’t overpack!
  • Accessories : Don’t bring anything extra! Keeping things as minimal as possible will make life easier for you. I would often only pack my GoPro or a Camera in addition to my clothes – but that’s it!

The best places to eat before your Broadway show

Broadway is located in Midtown, Manhattan, and let’s face it: Midtown can be a bit of a food desert. But I’ve spent way too many afternoons in Midtown, hunting for food. These are some of my favorite spots in Midtown and beyond.

Cheap eats in Midtown, Manhattan

Here are some of my favorite cheap eats in Midtown, NYC :

  • Margon : for the best little hole-in-the-wall Cuban spot
  • The Halal Guys : for the biggest portion of amazing street food
  • The Meatball Shop : for a nice sit-down spot with modern Italian fare
  • Capizzi : for Neapolitan-style pizza
  • Amy’s Bread : for pre-show baked goods
  • Schmackary’s : for the best cookies pre- or post-show
  • Empanada Mama : for some killer empanadas in Hell’s Kitchen
  • Corner Slice: for an easy and cheap slice of pizza

Check out the full list here (with my picks for what to order!).

Places to eat with easy access to Broadway

The best part about New York? The public transit. If you have the time, pre-show, you can eat an amazing meal just south of Broadway and make it up in time to see your show. Here are some of my favorite spots within a 20-minute ride of the theater district:

  • Luzzo’s : for the best Neapolitan pizza in New York
  • Mamouns : for affordable and tasty Middle Eastern fare to go
  • Joe’s Pizza : for the most buzzed-about traditional NYC slice
  • Artichoke Basille’s Pizza : for fans of artichoke on pizza
  • Jack’s Wife Freda : for a nice sit down spot with delicious food
  • Joe’s Steam Rice Roll : for the viral TikTok food that’s actually worth the trip
  • Celeste : for a nice sit down Italian meal

If you have more time, consider heading down to Chinatown to try out some of the amazing eats down there. Super budget-friendly, too!

Finalizing your solo Broadway trip

Planning the perfect Broadway trip to NYC comes down to planning and confidence. Thinking a few months ahead will always ensure that you get the tickets you want – and from there, the rest is easy. Good luck!

I love love Broadway as well, Hamilton being one of my favorites! I’m heading to New York in the summer and hoping to catch a couple shows on my trip, thanks for the tips!

That’s awesome – always nice to meet a fellow theater fan 🙂

What a great idea! I’m lucky to have family in the NYC area so do get to see shows occasionally.

My first visit to Broadway for a live show was magical. I was certainly hooked. And have returned many times for shows. Your post is a great reminder that we need to plan another trip. Great tips about saving money on tickets.

These are great tips! I would never have thought to try and snag a ticket THAT far in advance, so this is a good reminder for the next time I visit NYC. I’ve been 2x and still haven’t seen a show! Feels criminal, ha!

I totally agree that sitting in a Broadway theater is magical and exciting! Thanks for the tips about booking through third party apps for better deals as good shows get booked so fast! I love musicals. I must catch up on another Broadway show soon. 🙂

I appreciate the great tips. I, too, love to go to NYC and try to go twice a year. there are so many amazing shows to see. I wasn’t familiar with those discount apps. I’ll check them out. I love your suggestions for restaurants, pre-show. That can always be tricky.

More Broadway tickets released: Here's everything you need to know to plan a visit to New York City

Andrea M. Rotondo

Editor's Note

Broadway is back, baby! Well, almost.

As reported May 5, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Broadway League announced that Broadway shows can reopen at full capacity starting on Sept. 14. If you've been waiting for your own return to New York City and The Great White Way, TPG has everything you need right here -- from how to get there, to where to stay, where to dine and what else to see while you're in the Big Apple.

Tickets for Hamilton, Lion King and Wicked are all on sale as of today, May 11.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

How to get to New York City

Many people from New York and the surrounding states drive to the city for their getaways or arrive via public transportation to Penn Station or Grand Central Terminal . If you're flying in, you have three airport options: New York-JFK , New York-LGA and New Jersey's Newark-EWR .

What to see on Broadway

broadway travel opening times

Whether you're searching for tickets to "Hamilton" or "The Phantom of the Opera," a family favorite like "The Lion King" or something more serious a la "To Kill a Mockingbird," you'll find it on Broadway in 2021. We count 44 shows on offer in September. You can learn more about each show at Broadway.com .

As of today, however, only tickets for the following shows are on sale:

  • The Lion King
  • Ain't Too Proud
  • The Phantom of the Opera
  • Jagged Little Pill
  • Come From Away
  • Mrs. Doubtfire
  • Tina: The Tina Turner Musical

More will be available in the coming weeks.

Be aware that while New York has signaled Broadway can resume on Sept. 14, that doesn't mean the curtain will go up in all theaters across the city that night. Some musicals and plays require more intense preparation, and so you may find that your preferred show won't actually get back on stage until October or later.

Hotels to book for your Broadway getaway

broadway travel opening times

I have a trip to New York City coming up and was pleasantly surprised at the nightly rates at some prime hotels. Those deals may not last long as more people get vaccinated and start to travel, but New York City has no lack of points hotels, so dust off those balances and get ready to plan your trip.

If you're planning a trip around Broadway performances, you probably want to be fairly close to the action. The Theater District is hemmed in by West 54th Street in the north, West 40th Street to the south, Sixth Avenue on the east and Eighth Avenue to the west.

Being within walking distance of the theaters isn't a deal-breaker, though. New York City has excellent public transportation as well as plenty of taxis, Ubers and Lyfts, so it's easy to get from one part of the city to another. Because of the pandemic, gridlock in Times Square is still not nearly as bad as it once was, though that could change as people return to the Big Apple.

Here are some of our picks to lay your head after your Broadway escapade. The rates listed are for dates in mid-September.

AC Hotel New York Times Square

  • Why pick this hotel? The AC Hotel gets you plenty close to the theaters (a 15-minute walk) without being smack-dab in the middle of Times Square.
  • Location: 260 W. 40th Street (between Eighth and Ninth avenues, closer to Eighth)
  • Rates: From $329 per night or 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy points (Category 6)
  • TPG review: AC Hotel New York Times Square

Andaz Fifth Avenue

  • Why pick this hotel? This property is about a 10-minute walk from Times Square and 20 minutes from the Theater District. It's in a nice location across the street from the New York Public Library. Don't miss nearby Bryant Park if you're craving greenery and wide-open spaces during your visit.
  • Location: 485 Fifth Avenue at 41st Street (between Madison and Fifth avenues)
  • Rates: From $550 per night or 25,000 World of Hyatt points per night
  • TPG review: Andaz 5th Avenue

Conrad New York Midtown

broadway travel opening times

  • Why pick this hotel? TPG editor Nick Ewen says the Conrad is an excellent choice for families since standard room awards put you into a full suite. It's close to Central Park and near enough to the major theaters. Note that the Conrad has been closed since the onset of the pandemic but is scheduled to reopen on May 24.
  • Location: 151 W. 54th Street (between Sixth and Seventh avenues)
  • Rates: From $615 per night or 95,000 Hilton Honors points per night
  • TPG review: Conrad Midtown

InterContinental New York Times Square

  • Why pick this hotel? The terrific location and a fantastic onsite restaurant give this hotel an edge. There's also a Shake Shack around the corner on Eighth Avenue for your burger-and-fries cravings.
  • Location: 300 W. 44th Street (between Eighth and Ninth avenues, closer to Eighth)
  • Rates: From $269 a night or 48,000 IHG points each night
  • TPG review: InterContinental New York Times Square

Le Meridien New York, Central Park

  • Why pick this hotel? This used to be the Viceroy, but now that it's rebranded as Le Meridien, you can use your Marriott Bonvoy points here. It's close to the theaters, Central Park and shopping on Fifth Avenue.
  • Location: 120 W. 57th Street (between Sixth and Seventh avenues)
  • Rates: From $391 per night or 60,000 Marriott points per night (Category 7)

New York Marriott Marquis

  • Why pick this hotel? You are literally at the center of everything in Times Square. Plus, the rooms are spacious by New York City standards and the views are great from the higher floors.
  • Location: 1535 Broadway (between 7th and 8th avenues)
  • Rates: From $289/night or 60,000 Marriott points (Category 7)
  • TPG Review: New York Marriott Marquis

Park Hyatt New York

broadway travel opening times

  • Why pick this hotel? If you're looking for a World of Hyatt property that does a good job with elite recognition, the Park Hyatt is a good bet. It's convenient for visits to the theater as well as Central Park -- a must-visit destination for any out-of-towner.
  • Location: 153 W. 57th Street (between Sixth and Seventh avenues)
  • Rates: From $995 per night or 30,000 Hyatt points per night
  • TPG review: Park Hyatt New York

The Chatwal, a Luxury Collection Hotel

  • Why pick this hotel? Upscale environs paired with a quick and easy walk to the theaters are the hallmarks of The Chatwal.
  • Location: 130 W. 44th Street (between Sixth and Seventh avenues)
  • Rates: From $583 per night or 85,000 Marriott points per night (Category 8)

Where to dine

Theater aficionados have their favorite dining spots for a pre- or post-show nosh. When I'm searching for a restaurant to pair with a Broadway show, I turn to Melanie Votaw , New York City-based travel writer and theater critic. Here are some of her recommendations for a satisfying meal in and around the Theather District:

" Arriba Arriba at 762 Ninth Avenue and 51st Street is great when you're going to a theater in the high 40s or low 50s like Circle in the Square. I've been going to this Mexican restaurant for decades, and they still make the best chicken mole I've ever had in New York City.
My go-to pre- or post-theater restaurant is Mama Mia 44 SW on Ninth Avenue at 44th Street. They have some outdoor seating in good weather, and they make excellent pastas, meal salads and classic Italian meat and fish dishes at a reasonable price for Hell's Kitchen.
The West Bank Cafe is an iconic restaurant with a theater in the basement. It's so beloved by the theater community that a fundraising campaign received several hundred thousand dollars to keep it afloat during the pandemic. You may very well see actors there before or after their Broadway shows. It's located at 407 W. 42nd Street and Ninth Avenue and has been in business since 1978.
Another favorite place to meet up with theater buddies is Cafe Un Deux Trois at 123 W. 44th Street. They serve dishes like steamed mussels in white wine shallot broth or chicken, artichoke and sundried tomato crepes."

Brian Kelly, TPG's founder and CEO, is another fan of Cafe Un Deux Trois . Note that it's temporarily closed right now but plans to open in concert with Broadway in September.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Café Un Deux Trois (@cafeundeuxtrois)

Kelly also recommends chef Geoffrey Zakarian's The Lambs Club , inside The Chatwal on 44th Street, for "pre-dinner drinks and nibbles." This venue is also temporarily closed with the expectation of returning when the curtains go up on Broadway this fall.

Another staff favorite is Bar Centrale (324 W. 46th Street), in a townhouse above Joe Allen restaurant (326 W. 46th Street). Both are temporarily closed, but Broadway agents and actors are known to hang at Bar Centrale, so keep it on your wish list -- we're all hoping both venues reopen with Broadway.

Other "can't-miss" sights

If your return to Broadway includes time for additional sightseeing, consider these iconic choices.

Explore Central Park

Meander through the park to see meadows, lakes and attractions such as the Central Park Zoo, Central Park Carousel and Wollman Rink. During non-pandemic times, you'll also find bike tours, concerts and events such as Shakespeare in the Park. Central Park is between the Upper West and Upper East sides of Manhattan, starting at West 59th in the south and ending at Central Park North (the next block is West 111th Street) in the north.

American Museum of Natural History

On the Upper West Side of Manhattan near Central Park, this natural history museum (200 Central Park West) is one of the best in the world. Admission ranges from $13 to $23 per person. You'll need to buy timed tickets online before heading to the museum to see highlights such as a Tyrannosaurus rex, the Willamette Meteorite and a show at the Hayden Planetarium.

Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum

All the way on the west side of Hell's Kitchen, this riverfront museum (Pier 86, W. 46th Street). Bottom line

Like so many other tourist destinations, New York City has suffered during the pandemic. Broadway has been shuttered for more than a year and the theater community can't wait to greet you again in mid-September. If you feel the time is right for you, plan a trip to New York City for this fall and show your support to the hospitality and entertainment industries.

One of the most important things to consider when traveling to New York City to see Broadway shows is planning ahead. Many shows sell out quickly, so it's important to book your tickets as soon as possible. You can purchase tickets online, through the theatre box office, or through a third-party ticket vendor, or join a Broadway Exclusive Trip where all this is taken care of for you!

When planning your trip, it's also important to consider your accommodations. The Theatre District is located in Midtown Manhattan, and there are many hotels and other lodging options available in the area. Consider staying within walking distance of the theatres to make transportation easier. Many dining options are available in the Theatre District, ranging from quick bites to upscale restaurants. You can find everything from classic New York-style pizza to international cuisine. Consider making a reservation in advance to ensure that you can enjoy a meal before or after the show. Attending the Show

Attending a Broadway show is a unique and unforgettable experience. Make sure to arrive early to pick up your tickets and find your seats. Be sure to turn off your phone and refrain from taking pictures during the performance, as this can be distracting to other audience members and the performers. Finally, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

If you're interested in waiting around after a show, this is often a great opportunity to meet some of Broadway's brightest stars! For more information please see:

Visiting NYC During the Holidays

The period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is the most popular time for tourists to visit New York City. With attractions such as the tree at Rockefeller Center, the beautifully decorated storefronts, and the winter village at Bryant Park, it's no wonder why NYC is one of the most sought-after locations during this time .  It's important to note that this also means there will be larger crowds and higher prices for hotels and shows. To make the most of your trip, it's recommended to plan ahead. You can use this guide to help plan your own itinerary, or you can explore our Christmas in NY Broadway Travel Packages for a hassle-free holiday experience.
