Carnival Dream Itineraries

Carnival dream review, review of carnival dream.

The 2009-built Carnival Dream cruise ship is one of the Carnival fleet's largest and the first Dream-class vessel, together with Breeze and Magic  as well as Costa Diadema .

The vessel (IMO number 9378474) is currently Panama- flagged (MMSI 370490000) and registered in Colon .

History - construction and ownership

Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) is a US shipping company, trademarked brand and subsidiary of Carnival Corporation (shipowner). CCL was founded in 1972 as an independent company by Ted Arison (1924-1999, co-founder of NCL Norwegian ).

CCL has the Corporation's largest fleet as number of vessels and GT-tonnage (ship sizes/volumes and passenger capacities). In 2023, CCL had ~9% (by revenue) and ~19% (passengers) share of the cruise industry's worldwide market. In 2024, the parent company (Carnival Corporation) had ~51% stake in the US$64+ billion industry.

Carnival Dream cruise ship

The 3646-passenger ship Carnival Dream was floated out on October 24, 2008. When first launched, Carnival Dream was the biggest ship operated by Carnival, though she was later surpassed by Carnival Magic and Carnival Breeze, which were delivered in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

The liner features facilities similarly designed on the previous CCL ships while presenting some new features. Significant alterations were made to Deck 5's public areas and the exterior promenade running the boat's entire perimeter. A comedy club and a couple of themed bars were added during the 2012 drydock refurbishment . An interesting fact is that around 20 minutes of the "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" movie was filmed on Carnival Dream.

Decks and Cabins

Carnival Dream staterooms (1823 total) include 56 Suites, 841 Balcony, 221 Oceanview and 719 Inside, including 254 connecting, 35 wheelchair-accessible, 61 Spa and 193 Family cabins, in all 34 grades. On Carnival Dream were introduced the fleet's new categories "Deluxe Oceanview", "Cove Balcony" and "Cloud 9 Spa" cabins.

Most staterooms are sized 170-185 ft2 / 16-17 m2. Most cabin balconies are sized 35-45 ft2 / 3-4 m2. Deluxe Oceanviews are with two separate washrooms and advertised as "Family cabins" having max capacity 5 passengers. Cove Balcony (located beneath the lifeboats on Deck 2) have partially enclosed verandas.

The boat has 14 passenger decks of which 9 are with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

The two formal dining rooms on Carnival Dream are Scarlet (1122 seats) and Crimson (744 seats). Both restaurants are the focal point of dining onboard and feature red decors with Murano glass chandeliers. For those who like laughter with their food, is the Punchliner Comedy Brunch, taking place in the MDR (main dining room) only on sea days. The real foodies who are curious about how the galley feeds so many people, have to check out Chef's Table. For US$75 per person, you'll be able to meet the head chef and tour the galley, as well as dine on a multi-course meal at a private table, while watching the chefs at work.

Follows the complete list of Carnival Dream restaurants and food bars.

  • Crimson Restaurant (744-seat forward Dining Room, with two fixed dinner seatings and “Anytime Dining”)
  • Scarlet Restaurant (1122-seat aft Dining Room, with two fixed dinner seatings, open seating breakfast and lunch; "Seuss At Sea"-themed breakfasts for $5 cover charge)

  • Guy's Pig and Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse (added in 2017) is an open-air complimentary BBQ restaurant on Promenade Deck.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

The Lanai's outdoor seating areas are one of the best features aboard Carnival Dream. Ocean Plaza is another important venue and meet-and-greet hub, often missing on smaller Carnival ships. It offers a little something for everyone with a specialty coffee bar, dance floor, and bars offering drinks-of-the-day. In 2012 two new bars were added as part of Carnival's Fun Ship 2.0 refurbishment program. BlueIguana Tequila Bar and RedFrog Rum Bar offer tequila and rum-based cocktails, as well as the signature ThirstyFrog Red beer of Carnival.

Carnival Dream cruise ship WaterWorks slides

Carnival Dream is the first Carnival ship to boast (as a newbuild) a water park with multiple slides. Dream also features a wide outdoor promenade with an outdoor cafe and whirlpools in four different places along the outside edge of the deck.

Pizzeria Del Capitano

Pizzeria Del Capitano

On Carnival ships, the captain tends to be kind of a big deal — almost a celebrity. On a few select ships, they’ve even got their own pizza kitchen. The best part? Pizzeria del Capitano is open to everyone, 24 hours a day! And since our captains tend to be Italian, you know the quality of the ingredients truly pass muster. (Sorry, nautical pun.) Hand-tossed dough, made from imported Italian flour, plus fresh mozzarella form a solid base, and a choice of toppings put the finishing touches on this piping hot, fresh-from-the-oven mealtime — or anytime — classic. Jogging may not immediately come to mind when you think of things to do at sea, but it probably should. You don’t have to walk on water, you just have to get on a Carnival cruise. After all, if you’re going to jog, you’d be hard-pressed to find a place to do it with a more scenic view, or a more refreshing breeze — both of these are available in abundance when you go for an open-air jog on the upper-deck. Jogging tracks are available on all Carnival ships, and are even padded for long-distance comfort.

Blue Iguana Tequila bar

BlueIguana Tequila Bar is the onboard spot to chill and enjoy a slushy tequila drink or an ice-cold Mexican cerveza. The menu offers up Mexican favorites, including several brands of tequila and a slew of Mexican brews. There’s a lineup of frozen concoctions, cocktails and margaritas served by the glass or by the pitcher, and even a special Mexican beer cocktail (yes, really). Where can you find this little slice of Mexican paradise? Next to the pool, of course. So stay cool and take in the bar’s vacation vibe while you kick back on your cruise – that’s what official bar mascot Blue the Iguana would tell you.

Redfrog Rum Bar

Redfrog Rum Bar

Guests have told us we hit on something special with the cool Caribbean chill of the RedFrog Pub. We've taken the best parts and brought them poolside with the RedFrog Rum Bar, where the frog keeps the fun hopping day and night with all the island flava you know and love. Join the party at this poolside bar featuring a great selection of frog-approved Caribbean rum-based concoctions available by the glass or pitcher, plus plenty of Carnival’s signature private-label draft beer, ThirstyFrog Red.

Carnival Cruise Line's goal is to sell fun vacations and create memorable experiences at a great value. The company has certainly exceeded its own expectations with the Carnival Dream .

Each year on the Carnival Dream, guests are served 242,000 chocolate melting cakes, 346,000 pizzas, 145,300 cappuccinos, and 2 million pieces of pillow chocolates.

Carnival Dream - Interior Common Areas

The ship has many lovely, special public rooms. Filled with reds and golds, the Carnival Dream features expensive Murano glass, wood veneers, and custom made tiles. The estimated cost of the ship was $860 million, and it looks it. The ship's soaring atrium is one of Carnival's largest, and anyone who comes onto the ship for the first time is impressed by the exciting atmosphere it creates. Many Carnival Dream guests love the Ocean Plaza, a hub with day and night entertainment, coffee bar, and a full bar.

Carnival Dream - Lounges and Bars

Carnival prides itself on its "fun ships," and the Carnival Dream has several lounges, all featuring live or musical entertainment sure to keep everyone laughing and having fun. Burgundy is a 425-seat comedy club that features a wide variety of comedians, offering both family-friendly and adults-only performances each night. Each 7-day cruise has 24 comedy performances. For those who love to be in on the action, the Caliente Dance Club has a large dance floor and modern decor. Or, music lovers can enjoy The Song for karaoke or Sam's Piano Bar for their favorite tunes. The largest lounge on board is Encore!. Each week, guests are treated to three spectacular reviews, with singers, dancers, and the Fun Force acrobats.

Carnival Dream - Exterior Common Areas

Carnival cruisers love outdoor deck areas, and the Carnival Dream was designed with lots of public space outside for both kids and adults. I love the half-mile promenade that laps the ship on deck 5. It's a great place to walk, sit, or enjoy the whirlpools that extend over the sea. All adults can enjoy Serenity , the adults-only retreat forward on decks 14 and 15. It has its own bar, a tranquil atmosphere, and very comfortable seating. Kids (and some adults) want to spend all their time at WaterWorks , which features some spine-tingling water slides and wet fun for everyone. Other outdoor activities include an 18-hole miniature golf course and basketball and volleyball courts. Carnival Dream has two outdoor pools and several whirlpools.

Carnival Dream - Camp Carnival for Kids 11 and Under

Camp Carnival on deck 11 is divided into three sections, each for a different age group. The first area (ages 2 to 5) features an arts and crafts center and a variety of age-appropriate toys and games. The second area, aimed for ages 6 to 8, offers video game consoles such as PlayStation 2 and Wii. The third (ages 9 to 11) includes a karaoke machine, air hockey and foosball tables, and PlayStation 2 and Wii video game consoles. A reception desk provides parents with a convenient venue to check their kids into and out of the program. There's also a guard who keeps an eye on the entrance when the facility is open. The activities planned for the kids are fun, but also include an educational element related to the ship's Caribbean itineraries.

Carnival Dream - Circle C for Kids 12 to 14

Circle C is found on deck 4 and focuses on the tweens ages 12 to 14. This is a fun place, with dance floor, DJ, video jukebox, and Internet workstations. The room is 1,075 square feet, and kids love the modern design and hip furniture. Circle C has a dedicated director who oversees the tweens' activities, including late-night movies, video game contests, and pool parties.

Carnival Dream - Club O2 for Teens 15 to 17

The Club O2 Teen Club is adjacent to Circle C. It is a 2,740-square-foot club where teens can network and dance to all the latest hits. Designed as a place for teens to chill, the room includes a dance floor, soda bar, music-listening stations, and a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system. Like Circle C, the Club O2 programs have a dedicated director who oversees the activities. Next to Club O2 is The Warehouse, an expansive game room featuring the latest video and arcade games. Teens can also enjoy the Carnival Dream's Y-Spa youth spa program, which offers a variety of soothing treatments.

Carnival Dream - FunHub

Kids and adults alike will be impressed by the FunHub, a comprehensive shipboard intranet portal that includes an onboard social network, along with access to a wide variety of information on the ship's services, facilities, daily activities, weather, and next port of call. The FunHub is accessible via 36 computer stations located on decks 3, 4, and 5. These stations provide guests with free and convenient access to the Carnival Dream intranet and social network on a 24/7 basis. Guests who have their own laptops along or who rent a netbook on the ship can access the sites anywhere on the ship.

Carnival Dream - Cabins and Accommodations - Cove Balcony Cabin

The Carnival Dream offers all the standard type of accommodations , including interior cabins, oceanview cabins, balcony cabins, suites, and penthouse suites. These cabins have plenty of storage space and offer all the standard amenities. In addition, the Carnival Dream introduces two innovative types of staterooms. The first cabins are the "cove" balcony staterooms on deck 2, much closer to the water than traditional balcony cabins. The open area of the balcony is smaller and can be closed with a hatch if the weather is very bad. Although the opening is smaller, the balcony is more private and still allows marvelous views. The cove balcony cabin interior is the same layout and size as a standard balcony cabin.

Carnival Dream - Cabins and Accommodations - Family Quint Oceanview Cabin

The second type of new stateroom is the "family quint," which sleeps five. In addition to twin beds that convert to king-sized, the cabin has two bunk beds and a sofa bed. What's interesting about these 193 oceanview staterooms is the bathroom configuration. Like the family cabins on the Disney Cruise Line ships, the Carnival Dream family quint cabins have two baths. One is a full bathroom (sink, toilet, shower), and the second bath has a junior tub, shower, and sink. I think this layout is better than Disney's, which has a sink and toilet in one bath and a tub/shower and sink in the second. The Carnival Dream also features 65 spa staterooms and suites, which are located near the Cloud 9 Spa and have extra amenities/privileges.

Carnival Dream - Dining and Cuisine - The Lido Restaurant

The food flavors and variety of cuisines offered at the Lido Restaurant  are very good to excellent. This buffet features stations serving diverse cuisine like the Mongolian Wok , salad bar, chef's choice, and deli. Pizza and ice cream are available 24/7.

Carnival Dream - Dining - Main Dining Rooms

The two main dining rooms on the Carnival have a red theme and are appropriately named "Crimson" and "Scarlet." They feature two traditional seatings at 6 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. as well as "Your Time" dining from 5:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Scarlet Restaurant is also open for breakfast and lunch with open seating.

Carnival Dream - Summary

The Carnival Dream is a great addition to the Carnival fleet and a good value for cruise travelers. Family groups, couples, and singles who love big ships with lots of activities, excellent entertainment, and good, diverse cuisine will love the Carnival Dream. After all, it's a "fun" ship!

Carnival Dream vs Carnival Jubilee

Carnival Dream cruise ship

The Carnival Dream was built in 2009. It's 14 years older than the Jubilee , which was built in 2023. The Jubilee is Carnival's newest ship. It's named after the original Jubilee that sailed with Carnival from 1986 - 2004. It has two unique zones not found on its sister ships, The Shores, a beach-themed area, and Currents which explores the depths of the ocean.

Comparison Overview

Number of passengers, food and restaurants, bars and drinks, pools and hot tubs, ship features and activities, cruise costs, onboard costs.

The Dream is considered a medium size ship. Coming in at 1,004 feet long and 122 feet wide, it's roughly the length of 2.8 football fields, as wide as 2.3 tractor-trailers and the same height as a 14-story building. Compared to the Carnival Jubilee, the Dream is 30% smaller in terms of overall tons.

Carnival Dream holds 32% fewer passengers than the Jubilee based on double occupancy (two people per room). When you look at the "Space Ratio," or tons of ship compared to number of passengers, the Dream has the same amount of space per person as the Jubilee.

The Jubilee uses a zone layout to break up large crowds across the ship, often making it feel less crowded.

Seafood Shack on the Carnival Dream

Food is a big part of any cruise, and the ship you choose can make a huge difference in your food experience.

The Dream has 19 different dining options like Seafood Shack , Guys Pig and Anchor BarBQue , and Blue Iguana Cantina . Of those options, 14 are complementary, or included with your cruise fare. The other 5 options have an additional fee.

The Jubilee has 8 more dining venues. Some of its popular venues are Guys Pig and Anchor Smokehouse (Excel-ship) , Beach Buns , and Cucina Del Capitano (Excel-ship) . 19 of these restaurants are complementary and the other 8 have an additional fee.

If you like having a variety of places to eat, the Jubilee might be a better choice. It has 42% more dining options than the Dream.

Both ships have a similar number of paid versus included dining options.

Restaurants on Carnival Dream & Jubilee

Caliente Night Club on the Dream

The Carnival Dream has 5 fewer bars than the Carnival Jubilee.

In terms of drinks and cocktails, you have a variety of choices. Both ships serve the Pepsi family of products. That means Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Starry, Mug Root Beer, and Mountain Dew, although the selection can vary by ship.

You can check out recent the bar menus for the Dream and the Jubilee below.

Lido Pool on the Carnival Dream

Nothing beats relaxing by a pool with a nice drink in hand as you feel the fresh sea breeze pass by you. The problem is that with thousands of people on a ship, there's not always room. If you want to spend all day for 7 days in a pool, a cruise isn't for you. You would have a much better bet choosing a resort with a huge pool complex. That being said, a quick dip in the pool can be nice on a hot day.

The Carnival Dream has a total of 2 pools and 8 hot tubs. Tired of loud kids and splashing? 2 of the hot tubs are adults only.

Carnival Jubilee has more pools than the Dream and fewer hot tubs. There are more exclusive pools and hot tubs on the Jubilee. If you don't mind paying for exclusive access to areas in order to have less crowds, this might be a better choice.

Both ships have lots of activities to keep you busy throughout your cruise. Below you'll see a list of some of the major features on these ships. On the Dream, 69% of the activities below are included in the cruise fare. On the Jubilee, only 63% of the activities are included, meaning you might spend more money while on board.

Carnival is a mainstream cruise line. Mainstream cruise lines cater to a variety of guests, hoping to provide something for everyone. These typically cost about $100 - $350 per person per day.

Cruise pricing is dynamic and varies for each specific sailing based on factors such as departure point, ports of call, and time of year. Typically newer ships cost more, so a cruise on Carnival Dream will likely be cheaper than on Carnival Jubilee.

The cost will also vary depending on the type of cabin you book. You can see the differences between the Carnival cabins and how to choose the best one here:

Another way to gauge the cost of a cruise is to consider how much you'll spend on board. Even though a lot is included in the base cruise fare, you may still spend money on things like spa treatments, specialty dining, drinks, and excursions. In addition, guests can also have to pay for things like gratuities and tips.

Typically guests can expect to spend about 25 - 40% of the cost of the cruise on onboard expenses. In other words, if the cruise fare is $1,000 per person, you might spend between $250 and $400 on extra expenses.

The table below will help you understand what you might spend onboard a Carnival ship.

Carnival's Princess Cruises makes big-name beverage package bet

P rincess Cruises may not have the name recognition of its parent company's namesake brand Carnival Cruise Line, but it has an impressive pedigree, at least with people of a certain age. Many Americans, at least those over age 40, got their first exposure to the idea of cruising from "The Love Boat," which aired on ABC from 1977 until 1986.

The show highlighted various romantic plotlines in each episode and was known for casting big-name guest stars. In the much smaller, mostly pre-cable world where the show aired, it gave the cruise industry wide exposure and that's something that Carnival's Princess Cruises still leverages in commercials.

Related: Carnival explores a controversial Royal Caribbean megaship move

"Princess Cruises is The Love Boat, the world’s most iconic cruise brand that delivers dream vacations to millions of guests every year in the most sought-after destinations on the largest ships that offer elite service personalization and simplicity customary of small, yacht-class ships," the cruise line shared on its website.

Essentially, Princess fills the same role for Carnival that Celebrity Cruises fills in Royal Caribbean's portfolio. It's a brand that's more focused on adults than families which offers a higher-end experience compared to Carnival.

Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter to save money on your next (or your first) cruise.

That, however, does not mean that Princess Cruises passengers aren't down for a good time and the cruise line has made some changes to its liquor and wine lineup that will bring in some star power.

Princess Cruises bets big on upscale adult beverages

Princess Cruises has made mixology and higher-end beverages a part of its brand offering. The cruise line's Premier Beverage Package offers an upscale bar experience for passengers including:

  • Top-shelf spirits, reserve wines by the glass, and new high-end crafted cocktails by Mixologist Rob Floyd
  • Selection of 75+ spirits, 40+ wines by the glass, 20+ high-end, crafted cocktails
  • Premier wines by the glass including Duckhorn, Stag's Leap, Grgich Hills, and Cattier Champagne
  • Private Woodford Reserve Bourbon Selection created exclusively for Princess
  • Personalized Jack Daniel's Whiskey Single Barrel Select

Now, the cruise line plans to expand its adult beverage offering with its all-new "Love Line Premium Liquors" collection.

"Crafted in collaboration with renowned celebrities Pitbull, Jason Aldean, and Romero Britto, this exclusive line of wines and spirits promises an unparalleled experience for guests sailing aboard ships from the Love Boat," Princess Cruises shared on its website.

The "Love Line" collection is currently being offered on Sun Princess and it will roll out to the rest of the fleet later this summer.

Princess's "Love Line Premium Liquors collection features meticulously selected wines and spirits, each bearing the unique touch of its celebrity partner. From the smooth allure of premium vodka to organic notes of crafted wine, this collection caters to the discerning tastes of Princess Cruises guests," the cruise line added.

Big-name musicians, artist bring alcohol to Princess Cruises

You can blame Sammy Hagar for so many celebrities launching their own brands of alcohol. The former Van Halen frontman sold an 80% stake in his Cabo Wabo tequila brand to Gruppo Campari for $80 million in 2007.

That set off a wave of famous people lending their names to liquor brands. Princess Cruises has capitalized by adding alcohol from three very different celebrities. The cruise line detailed some of its offerings:

  • Voli 305 Vodka by Pitbull : A celebration of style and sophistication, Voli 305 Vodka embodies the vibrant energy of Miami nightlife. Created in partnership with Pitbull, this ultra-premium vodka is distilled to perfection, offering a taste of luxury with every sip.

Love Prosecco by Britto : Artist Romero Britto and esteemed winemaker Villa Sandi have joined creative forces to unveil Love Prosecco, a private label that marries artistry with the essence of fine Italian craftsmanship and is included as part of the dining experience at Love by Britto aboard Sun Princess, as well as available in bars across the Princess fleet.

  • Melorosa Sauvignon Blanc, Red Blend and Cabernet Sauvignon by Jason Aldean : Melorosa Sauvignon Blanc, Melorosa Red Blend and Cabernet Sauvignon from celebrated country music icon Jason Aldean and his sister Kasi Wicks and fellow country music artist and entertainer Chuck Wicks round out the initial brands that make up the exciting new Love Line collection.

Anyone sailing with Princess Cruises who has a Premier beverage package will be able to try the new line of drinks without any additional charges.

"The Love Line Collection is a natural extension of the elegance and sophistication found throughout our Princess ships and makes every sip a journey worth savoring,” said Princess Cruises President John Padgett.

Find the best cruise for you

Featured cruise deals, cruising guide, why take a cruise vacation.

If you have a place on your bucket list, chances are, a cruise will get you there – provided the destination is along a coastline or inland waterway. Cruises cover the world, taking millions of passengers each year to regions such as the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Alaska, Europe, the Mediterranean and even Antarctica. Cruising offers a tremendous value, with trips that include your lodging, meals and entertainment – all rolled into one. Some luxury cruise lines even offer fully inclusive vacations, which cover drinks and tours ashore. And best of all, cruising means seeing the world conveniently after unpacking only once.

Cruises also provide a wonderful option for families, with many ships offering things like waterslides, mini-golf courses and fun clubs for kids, tweens and teens. While most are free, nursery programs can cost extra. Planning is easy: Pick your destination and the right ship (and line) for your travel style. The cruise line makes it simple, offering packages to help you save on extras like alcohol, shore tours or even airfare.

Travelers say they choose to cruise because cruising often costs less per night when compared with land vacations at a hotel, where they'll have to book -- and pay for -- every extra.

What are Tips for Finding Cheap Cruises?

If you're a flexible traveler, you'll have a better chance of finding cheap cruises. Take a cruise that doesn't sail over the summer or holidays, when prices are highest. Book an inside cabin, or take your chances with a "guarantee cabin," ideal for passengers who aren't picky about their stateroom location but really want the lowest price available. Book cabins on lower decks, which often come with lower prices than those rooms on higher floors – that is staterooms over suites.

Cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International offer rates that might drop as low as $75 per person per night -- and sometimes even lower.

If you want a real bargain, consider a transatlantic or repositioning cruise. These cruises are one-way or open-jaw trips, that start in one port and finish at another. You can score a deal sailing from Florida to Europe, for example, or even from New York to Florida. Just be aware, you'll probably have to pay a bit more for airfare to return.

What are Tips to Finding Last-Minute Cruise Deals?

While being flexible date wise will always get you the best last-minute cruise deals, it's particularly helpful if you live near a cruise port and can quickly drive there. That way you'll probably be able to jump on those deals that might pop up just a week or two before the ship is scheduled to sail.

Or if you don't have flexibility with either departure dates or embarkation locations, be willing to compromise on exact destinations. This will allow you to find a wider range of last-minute deals traveling to locations in their off-season or so-called shoulder season.

Do plenty of research and know what your ideal cruise is and costs on average, so both are already on your radar. When you see it drop, pounce! (Many cruise lines update pricing several times per day, so preparation is crucial.)

Best cruises in 2024

There's truly a cruise style and ship for everyone, and that has never been more the case than in 2024, as vessels continue to come in an array of sizes – from riverboats and expedition vessels to the largest-ever mega ships. And it's not an exaggeration to say some are loaded with so many activities that you couldn't possibly enjoy them all in a single sailing.

Families will find plenty of options and activities onboard big ships, which have transformed cruising, making the vessels as exciting as the destinations themselves. The Caribbean is always a great option for families, offering lots of sunshine, great beaches and culture. Alaska, famous for its incredible vistas and abundant wildlife, is also a solid family cruise option. Consider cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and even Celebrity Cruises and Holland America Line for a great multi-generational voyage.

Or on the smaller side, by comparison, river cruising remains a hot ticket item this year, with exciting routes that send eager guests down the Danube or Rhine rivers in Europe or to lesser-frequented locations, like the Mekong River in Cambodia or Vietnam, or soon the Magdalena River in Colombia. Popular river cruises embark in timeless cities like Amsterdam, Budapest and Lisbon. River cruise lines to consider encompass Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, Emerald Cruises, Tauck, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Riverside Luxury Cruises, as well as American Cruise Lines for a domestic alternative.

If you're an adventurer at heart, an expedition cruise might be best for you. These voyages, often onboard small ships (only a few hundred passengers tops), offer an intimate experience that brings passengers right up next to glaciers, whales, penguins and iguanas. Ships visit tiny spots all over the world – from pole to pole – including the Arctic, Alaska, Australia, Greenland, the Galapagos and, of course, Antarctica. Passengers will spend their time zodiacing, kayaking, hiking, biking and exploring with expert guides and knowledgeable naturalists. Expedition travelers love cruise lines such as Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, UnCruise Adventures, Silversea, HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions), Ponant and Quark Expeditions, as well as an ever-expanding list that now even extends to Seabourn and Viking.

But for the most decadent form of travel, luxury cruises offer all-inclusive experiences onboard small to median-sized ships (usually under a thousand passengers) with perks like butlers, high-end amenities and personalized, intuitive service, not to mention the finest dining at sea. Ships often feature luxury touches like marble and crystal decor, intimate spaces and beautiful spas. Because luxury ships tend to be on the smaller size, they can often reach off-the-beaten-path destinations bigger ships simply cannot access -- ports like St. Tropez or Guadeloupe. If you're looking for a luxury cruise, consider Crystal, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea, Explora Journeys, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and upcoming Four Seasons Yachts.
