The 6 best party cruises on the high seas, from sun-deck soirees to disco dance-offs

Ashley Kosciolek

Whether you're a joiner who loves a themed shindig, a sucker for a family promenade parade, a fan of high-class ballroom dancing or a college student who enjoys a raging kegger, there's a line to fit your cruise party style.

If you're searching for a raucous atmosphere with lots of drinking and dancing into the wee hours of the morning, you'll do best on short sailings (two to four days) out of Florida or southern California. Choose a time when primary schools are in session for a more adult rather than family-focused vibe on board. College spring break weeks are often the ultimate party cruises.

If you're looking for a different kind of party — perhaps something more refined or family-friendly — which cruise line you choose is likely more important than the length of the voyage or the departure port.

Here's my list of the best party cruise lines, whether you want to drop it low or raise the roof.

Margaritaville at Sea: Best for budget bashes

carnival party cruise

If you're short on time, cash or both, Margaritaville at Sea — which operates just one ship, Margaritaville at Sea Paradise — is the ideal party cruise ship line. Each sailing is just two nights, and the ship runs back and forth between the Port of Palm Beach in Florida and Freeport in the Bahamas.

Because most passengers seek out the ship for a quick getaway where they can let loose during a couple of days off from work, they're often in the mood to party. (After all, it's 5 o'clock somewhere.)

You'll find pool deck dance parties, Jimmy Buffett-themed nightly shows and several bars and lounges on board. The main lounge, Euphoria, is where you can get your boogie on after hours.

To be clear, the ship is more than 30 years old, so you won't be in the lap of luxury on one of these sailings. However, the pricing is great for cruisers on tight budgets . Fares start from $299 for two people for an ocean-view cabin — just $75 per person, per night (not including taxes or port fees). You'd be hard-pressed to find land-based accommodations for that little, and Margaritaville's fares also include meals and entertainment. The best prices are offered midweek.

Want to make the festivities last a bit longer? You can tack on a two-night pre- or post-cruise stay at Margaritaville in Orlando, or book a stay of two, four or six nights at a resort in Freeport before cruising back to Florida.

Virgin Voyages: Best for trendy parties

carnival party cruise

Ain't no party like a Richard Branson cruise ship party, and there are plenty of them on Virgin Voyages ' ships. When the business mogul signed his name to the cruise line, it was a given that the vessels would be fresh, trendy and ready to rock.

A mix of rockstar chic and drag queen glam, a cruise with Virgin feels like one long fever dream, albeit a pleasant one. All ships are for adults only.

Passengers can expect risqué entertainment, including lounge singer-style performances; late-night parties, notably Scarlet Night, where everyone is encouraged to dress in red for a giant poolside rave; and wacky events like scavenger hunts and secret below-deck tours that take you for tipples in the crew bar after the sun sets.

What's most refreshing about Virgin's take on cruising is its "come as you are" attitude. On a recent sailing, I saw crew — men and women — dressed as merpeople, passengers who decided to wear tutus to dinner (and they weren't even a little bit out of place doing so), and singers and dancers of all shapes, sizes and ethnicities.

Virgin Voyages' ships will give you music festival vibes at sea — but with much better accommodations and fellow guests who have actually showered. (Body glitter, glow-in-the-dark clothing and fairy wings are all encouraged.)

Carnival Cruise Line: Best party drinks

carnival party cruise

If you prefer to enjoy parties with an adult beverage in hand, a Carnival cruise is worth your consideration. Its mixed drinks are some of the tastiest and most creative in the industry, including specialty concoctions that change color or which are topped with poppable smoke bubbles.

My favorites? Try the Cucumber Sunrise (vodka, lime juice, watermelon syrup, orange juice and muddled cucumber) at the Alchemy bar on nearly any Carnival ship or the Crystal Ball (tequila, Green Chartreuse, agave nectar and lime) at the Fortune Teller bar on Mardi Gras.

One downside is that the drinks can be pricey. If you plan to consume a lot of alcohol, you might want to consider one of the line's beverage packages , which run from $60-65 per person, per day. At that rate, you'd have to drink roughly six cocktails per day to make it worth the cost, and if you purchase the package, anyone else in your cabin who's 21 or older will have to do the same.

Like Margaritaville at Sea, the line offers affordable sailings, but it has a larger fleet of ships from which to choose — some of the best party cruise ships afloat. Also like Margaritaville at Sea, its shorter sailings tend to draw a more party-hardy crowd, so keep that in mind as you determine the level of shenanigans you prefer when you're having a good time.

MSC Cruises: Best for late-night parties

carnival party cruise

Are you someone who likes to party all night and sleep in the next day? MSC Cruises is a great cruise line for doing just that, especially if you're sailing on one of its Europe-based ships. (On a recent U.S.-based sailing, the club was dead before midnight, but the casino and its bar were open until well after I went to bed.)

Every vessel has a host of bars and lounges, but you'll want to make your way to the onboard nightclub, where DJs play music until well after 2 a.m., as long as there's a crowd.

Themed parties include white parties, where all passengers are encouraged to wear white, and snow parties, where the crew blasts fake snow (read: foam) onto the pool deck as passengers dance.

If you also want to party ashore, look for Caribbean itineraries that offer overnights at the line's private island, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve . After the sun sets, the body of the island's lighthouse illuminates with LED lights to create a spectacular show accompanied by a shoreside beach party.

Don't worry if you feel tired or hung over the next day. In true Italian fashion — it's a Mediterranean line, after all — the coffee is superb. Every bar has a fancy machine that can make whatever your caffeine-starved heart desires: espresso, Americano, cappuccino, latte, mocha and more. Note that specialty coffee costs extra if you don't have a beverage package.

Royal Caribbean: Best for family-friendly parties

carnival party cruise

Royal Caribbean is one of the most family-friendly cruise lines sailing the seas. Although the line's ships offer plenty of adult activities on board — late-night clubbing, adults-only hot tubbing and 18+ scavenger hunts — they also schedule plenty of parties for kids and families to enjoy together.

For example, every ship that's debuted since 1999 features an indoor promenade, lined with shops and restaurants, that serves as the venue for special performances. For years, Royal Caribbean's promenade parades included characters from "Shrek" and "Madagascar" as part of the line's former partnership with DreamWorks.

Now, the promenade shows feature members of the onboard entertainment staff performing well-known hits, such as the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine," while dressed in costumes. Pirate ships and other props make the experience a fantastic one for all age groups but definitely for children.

Royal Caribbean also scores off the charts in terms of kids club offerings. In addition to a battery of supervised daily activities, the staff also organizes nighttime events, including dance parties, where kids can get their groove on with new friends while enjoying mocktails.

If that isn't enough, the line hosts several theme nights, which encourage passengers to dress up. Held on sailings of four nights or longer, these gatherings, which are appropriate for all ages, might be themed as masquerade, country western, toga or decade-specific ('50s, '60s, '70s, '80s) parties.

Cunard Line: Best for high-class hootenannies

carnival party cruise

If animated characters, twerking and loud, pulsating music aren't your thing, you might prefer a sailing on one of Cunard 's classic, nautically styled vessels.

On Queen Mary 2, for example, you can partake in ballroom dance classes, where you'll learn to cut a rug with the best of them.

At night, take your newfound (or, perhaps, well-worn) skills back to the ballroom, where a live band plays as cruisers dance classic styles like waltz, foxtrot and swing — often in their most swanky attire. Cunard is one of the few remaining cruise lines that still has formal nights .

On a recent sailing, people nearly three times my age were up dancing until well after 2 a.m. (Seriously, a 103-year-old WWII veteran showed me up on the dance floor several nights in a row.)

During the day, when you're not honing your fancy footwork, the ballroom is used for another more sedentary type of party: afternoon tea. You won't want to miss the pastries and finger sandwiches served by white-gloved waiters. The scones and clotted cream are a party for your tastebuds.

Bottom line

Whether your idea of a party includes loud, late-night debauchery with plenty of drinks or a more laid-back gathering where passengers sip tea in a formal ballroom, there's a cruise that will allow you to cut loose in whichever way you prefer. Your preferences are, ultimately, what determine the best party cruise line for you.

Choose shorter, less expensive sailings for a more raucous experience; select a longer, pricier voyage if you're looking for understated celebrations. Either way, you're sure to have a great time.

Carnival Theme Nights 2024: Schedule for Every Ship!

Photo of author

March 15, 2024

Carnival cruise theme nights

Carnival offers some of the most entertaining themed nights and parties at sea .

Since most theme nights require specific attire , many passengers like to know the schedule in advance.

Therefore, I’ve made this article with a description of them and the complete schedule for all ships for 2024 .

Table of Contents

’70s ’80s or ’90s Night

On almost every Carnival Cruise there’s a decade-themed night that celebrates the music, culture, and fashion of the ’70s, ’80s, or ’90s .

You can expect to hear hit songs from each era and have fun while dancing to them.

What to wear? It depends on the decade but generally:

For the ’70s : bell-bottom jeans, psychedelic or floral shirts and dresses, platform shoes. Think disco glam with lots of sparkles.

For the ’80s : bright neon shirts or skirts, off-the-shoulder tops, parachute pants, bandanas, leg warmers, and headbands.

On many ships the the ’80s night is called ’80s Rock n Glow Night, remember to bring with you some neon pieces of clothing.

carnival party cruise

For the ’90s : grunge or hip-hop-inspired looks with baggy jeans, plaid mini skirts, band T-shirts, flannel shirts, and snapback caps.

  • White Night

White Night is one of the most famous on Carnival ships, it can be found on almost every ship and it is very easy to dress up in theme.

My advice is: open your closet and pick every white piece of clothing that you have , it’s as simple as that.

For its total white look, a man can wear white dress shirts, pants, and shoes. For a more chic version, a white blazer over a light-colored shirt can also work well.

Women can opt for white dresses, ranging from elegant gowns to casual summer dresses. For the accessories pearl jewelry and white clutches are just perfect.

carnival party cruise

Elegant Night

One of the cruise’s highlights, Elegant Night invites guests to dress in their most formal attire. I have to say that, as time goes by, formal nights become less and less popular.

I personally still like to dress up for a few evenings on a cruise. There is no need to overdo it!

Men can wear tuxedos or dark suits , with ties or bow ties if they like it.

Women can wear evening gowns or cocktail dresses , paired with shiny jewels and evening clutches.

  • Island Night

On some cruises, there can be an Island Night . The idea is to capture the spirit of tropical heavens with Caribbean music, island-inspired cocktails, and activities that celebrate beach life.

The dress code for all includes bright floral shirts or dresses featuring palm leaf, floral, or other bright prints .

It’s basically the Carnival version of the Caribbean Night that you can find among the Royal Caribbean Theme Nights 2024 .

  • Motown Party

The Motown Party it’s a night dedicated to the sounds of Motown, with soulful music, classic hits, and an atmosphere that will bring you back to the golden age of rhythm and blues.

As far as I know, there’s no actual dress code for this party. To stay on topic you can opt for a ’50s or ’60s outfit .

Vintage suits, fedoras, and polished dress shoes for men. A-line dresses, sequined tops, and flared skirts for women.

Will all the party’s listed happen on every cruise? Do I need to bring outfits for all then find out when I board which ones they will have or is there a way to find out beforehand so I don’t overpack?

Hello Selena, unfortunately the parties can change very often during the year so there is never 100% certainty about which ones there will be. My advice is to bring clothes that can adapt well to the different parties, but that you can also wear normally during your cruise.

What is serenity night on the magic?

as far as I know it should be a deck party at serenity, which is an adults-only area for guests ages 21 and over.

The 9 Best Party Cruise Ships

author image

See recent posts by Jason Leppert

Depending on your travel style, how you choose to party on the high seas can mean a million different things. We've rounded up a wide array of cruise ships for every kind of traveler. To start with, you'll find classic ships for cruisers looking to party spring-break style. Expect bumping dance music, lots of nightclub action, and hosted daytime pool parties. To even things out, we've also found the ships that are best for travelers who like to mix high-octane adventure with their party antics, and even some family-friendly party ships. Read on for our nine favorite party cruise ships, from Carnival to Disney and everything in between. It's a party on the high seas.

Cruising for the first time? Make sure you don't let these cruise travel disasters happen to you!

1. Carnival Fantasy

The Main Pool on the Carnival Fantasy/Oyster

Wondering which cruise line is best for partying? Well, we found it. Carnival Cruises are hands-down the way to go for those seeking a tried-and-true cruise party experience. For starters, the cruise line has its own DJ academy that’s run by famous Las Vegas and Miami DJs. The brand essentially gave birth to the party cruise with its “Fun Ship” fleet, and the Carnival Fantasy is the most senior of those. In fact, there are a total of eight Fantasy-class sister ships that are commonly deployed on shorter weekend getaway cruises. That makes these the perfect length cruises for travelers who want to party, but not spend too many of their vacation days. Interiors are bright and colorful throughout the ships, including the the bars and nightclubs. The Fantasy itself features the line’s latest BlueIguana Tequila Bar and RedFrog Rum Bar, as well as a nightclub and theme party nights. Is this a peaceful weekend getaway? Likely not. But if you’re looking to live your wildest life, the Carnival Fantasy is for you.

2. Carnival Vista

The Beach Pool on Carnival Vista/Oyster

If you’re seeking Carnival’s slightly more refined side, the Carnival Vista may be more your speed. All the fun is still here, but the formerly flashy decor of previous ships is swapped for a more subtle beach resort aesthetic. You’ll find brand staples like BlueIguana Cantina, along with the pharmacy-themed Alchemy Bar and RedFrog Pub & Brewery offer beers that are brewed right onboard. Aside from the bars and clubs, parties are hosted at the outdoor pool deck and indoors at the Liquid Lounge. Check your cruise itinerary for theme nights, so you know which outfits to pack.

3. Norwegian Escape

Jimmy Buffett’s Magaritaville at Sea on Norwegian Escape/Oyster

Norwegian Cruise Line channels Jimmy Buffett to create the relaxed party atmosphere aboard the Norwegian Escape . The musician’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar and Margaritaville at Sea embody his philosophy of partaking in the good life. Still, passengers can get their blood pumping again with all sorts of high-octane activities. There are thrilling waterslides plus a challenging ropes course to enjoy. Broadway-worthy productions in the Stardust Theater are also thrilling. And then there are the themed parties (like the wildly popular Glow Party), which you’ll learn more about just below.

4. Norwegian Pearl

Comedy and Dancing on Norwegian Pearl/Oyster

In addition to the Norwegian Escape, the Norwegian Pearl is party central. For starters, many music festivals come to the ship, giving guests a chance to listen in on multiple live sets as well as mingle with their favorite artists. The expansive pool deck and concert-friendly Stardust Theater also make great live-entertainment venues. However, Norwegian is perhaps most famous for its themed party nights. These include Latin Night, ’70s and ’80s nights, and the Glow Party — where black lights, club music, and neon are guaranteed to make the night memorable.

5. Harmony of the Seas

Royal Promenade on Harmony of the Seas/Oyster

If you’re after a cruise ship that’s really more of a floating city, you’d do well to check out the ships of the Royal Caribbean International line. Specifically, the Harmony of the Seas . It’s one of the largest at sea, and has almost too many venues, restaurants, and bars to count. How big is the Harmony of the Seas? Well, for starters, its central Royal Promenade is big enough to host parades, and its Studio B is a multipurpose hub of activity complete with a genuine ice rink. This one even has an escape room experience — Escape the Rubicon — as well as the thrilling Ultimate Abyss spiral dry slide and AquaTheater, with performers executing all sorts of cool acrobatics and aerials. Harmony of the Seas also has a bevy of bars to keep your thirst at bay, including a robot bar and a nightclub with a light-up dance floor.

6. Anthem of the Seas

The North Star Bar on Anthem of the Seas/Oyster

Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas is another ship that mixes party-ready elements (like a dizzying number of bars) with cool thrills for those who get their kicks in more visceral ways. Or maybe you love both! Let’s start with the booze. Like sister ship Harmony of the Seas, you’ll find the Bionic Bar on board, where robots stir and shake all types of boozy concoctions to shockingly solid reviews. There’s also the North Star, which allows you to sip cocktails while dangling way above the cruise deck. For cruisers who prefer some action, check out the line’s signature FlowRider surf simulator as well as the RipCord by iFly skydiving simulator (which is especially fun lit up in neon at night). For milder, kid-friendly fun, head to the SeaPlex. Here you’ll find a video game lounge, bumper car arena, roller rink, circus school, and dance club.

7. Disney Fantasy

Disney Fantasy character show/Courtesy of Jason Leppert

It will come as absolutely no surprise that when it comes to family party time, Disney Cruise Line takes the cake. And its Disney Fantasy ship just so happens to pack in the most fun for travelers on its weeklong voyages. You can expect Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, and other recognizable Disney characters at sea, which is guaranteed to please the youngest cruisers. Best of all, the line does a fine job of providing something for everyone. Families can catch stage shows, film screenings, and opt for themed dining, as well as ride the AquaDuck water coaster and play at the AquaLab. Kid-centric destinations onboard include the Midship Detective Agency or Disney’s Oceaneer Club — where the little ones will get character visits and access to games and toys. Adults can head to Europa for The Tube nightclub or La Piazza, Ooh La La, O’Gills Pub, and Skyline bars.

8. Disney Wonder

Tiana's Place, Disney Wonder/Courtesy of Jason Leppert

The Disney Wonder may be smaller than the Fantasy, but you’ll still find plenty of family-fun party activites on board. Those include its own AquaLab interactive water park., as well as a long line-up of deck performances (including one helmed by Mickey Mouse as your ship departs port). Fireworks and pirates are also cruisers favorites. When it comes to dining, the Disney Wonder excels, especially at Tiana’s Place, a restaurant inspired by “The Princess and the Frog.” Here, a live jazz band and parade accompany your southern-inspired meals. Of course, big hits with kids include the Marvel Super Hero Academy and Frozen Adventures, which are both part of Disney’s Oceaneer Club. No Disney Wonder cruise would be complete without a visit from Queen Elsa and Princess Anna during the family-friendly “Frozen, A Musical Spectacular.”

9. Queen Mary 2

carnival party cruise

While it may not come to mind as a party ship at first, Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 is a wonderful option for those who want to step back in time. This ocean liner is all about creating an elegant vintage vibe, with its formal dress code and live big-band music. The ship attracts a more mature crowd than you’d find on Carnival’s ships, and far fewer families than the Disney cruises. It also has an incredibly high price tag, with luxury dining venues and the world’s only at-sea planetarium. Itineraries can be incredibly long and are often booked as a once-in-a-lifetime adventure (including around-the-world sailings). When it comes to entertainment, expect everything from Broadway-style revues to Shakespeare.

Is Carnival a party ship?

I found a short 5 day/night cruise I'm interested in on Carnival.  But partner is not excited about it.  He has the impression that Carnival ships are raucous party boats where you will never find peace and quiet, and people just come to party all day and night.  Is he right?  If it matters, we have been on Viking River cruises (quiet), and Norwegian (reasonably quiet).

There are time and places on the ship where you can find some peace and quite. The serenity deck if your ship has on immediately come to mind.

But remember,  there is a reason Carnival is called the Fun Ships !

balcony bound

To me, it all depends on the time of year - spring break, summer - it's going to be busier/noisier.  Sea days are always noisier. For the record though, I've never experienced a "raucous party" on any of our Carnival Cruises.  I should mention that we don't hang out on the lido deck though.  There are quieter places all over the ship and I think you can pretty much find whatever atmosphere you like.

Depends on where you are, when you are cruising and what you like doing.

If you like to lounge around in peace and quiet, there are plenty of places to do that.   If you like to party, there are plenty of places to do that.  You can really choose your own experience.

I like the fact that I can be as busy or as lazy as I want to be whenever I want.

BellaSweet

Any cruise ship is whatever kind of vacation that you want.

That said, Carnival does have a rep of being a party cruise line. But there are lots of quiet areas.. even on deck(where there is always music and stuff going on), there are still quiet areas. And there is lots to do that doesn't have anything to do with partying.

I think where you cruise out of has a lot to do with it as well..and time of year. Baltimore cruises seem a bit more low-key than Miami.

We like a quiet cruise..with some fun added in. We don't go to many shows or deck parties..but we do always go to comedy shows and sit by the Alchemy Bar to make friends.

The Lido pool deck area tends to be the liveliest place on the ship during the day. However, depending on the ship, there are lots of quieter places on the ship like the Serenity area and the aft pool.  I have done 3 day up to 8 day cruises on Carnival,  and I never thought I was on a party ship at any time.  People tend to drink more on shorter cruises, but I have never seen anything get out of hand or witnessed many people get sick. I have seen more people get sick from the motion of the ship than I have from people drinking too much.

If you choose a time other than school breaks and summer, you will be more likely to have a quieter crowd.  I've cruised a lot on Carnival.  I usually book 7 or 8 nights, but did go on a 4 night cruise at Christmas time once.  It was fine.  All of my Carnival cruises have been fine.  I was very hesitant to book my first Carnival cruise several years ago because of the reputation, but I worried for no reason.  I have cruised on three other lines, but Carnival is our cruise of choice now. If you cruise during spring break or right after schools get out, you might see more college kids partying.  I think shorter cruises during school breaks will attract a younger crowd. We have always been able to find quiet places to relax, even on the Vista.

I agree with where you cruise out of has a lot to do with the crowd.  When we cruised out of Baltimore, it was much more low-key than our cruises out of Miami.

I don't like some of the music the whippersnappers play these days, but the only time it ever really bugged me was at night in the smoking area outside when a bunch of kids went into a *decidedly profane* rap session complete with racial epithets.

So I finished my smoke and drink, and went inside.  When I came back later, they were gone.  Probably found another place to rap.

My very unclear point is that you can't really pigeonhole an entire cruise into one category.  Just like everywhere else, you're the star of nobody's show except your own, so have fun on your terms!

I think the secret is the length of the cruise.   The 3-4 day cruises are called booze cruises for a reason.  Five day cruises are borderline.  I've never been on a cruise shorter than 7 days and depending on time of year they can be pretty quiet but fun is always around the corner.  Our longest cruise was 15 days and the crowd was definitely older and more sedate but still fun.

I have found on a Carnival ship if you are looking to have a party fun ship experience you can find it and if you aren't you can avoid it.  DH and I are not the party type people and have never had a problem avoiding that scene.  Most of our earlier cruise on Carnival were family cruises where I didn't see much of it at all because I wasn't looking for it or doing things with our family that would bring us in contact with it.  My kids are older now (22 and 25) and my DD does like to party.  She was able to find the party scene on her last 2 Carnival cruises with us.  We weren't looking for it and never really saw it.

karajeboo

I've found Carnival to be no more of a party ship than Disney or Royal Caribbean.  Seriously.  Now that said, I've only been on 7 day cruises over spring break or during the summer.  Never a shorter, less expensive cruise that is sometimes a bachelor or bachelorette party type of cruise.  But honestly, Fun Ship does not mean raucous party, it just means they try to keep it upbeat on deck, and offer lots of activities.  And yes, I was serious about Disney, I've seen those ships get just as crazy with adults while their kids are off with Mickey.  lol 😉

MCC retired

The Party Ship thing may be due to CCL having the most short, less $$ , 3-5 night cruises from drive to ports .

Those cruises . especially over a weekend , do attract a different type cruiser.

Totally different experience on the 6 night and longer CCL cruises.

DukeASUGirl

My only Carnival cruise to date was a 3-night one out of Long Beach over Fall Break (that Monday was Columbus Day so it was a long weekend for many even if they don't actually get a Fall Break).

And even then, we didn't really find it to be a party atmosphere. Sure, if you wanted to party, you could. But I wouldn't have called it any wilder than our Norwegian cruises of a decade earlier. Seriously -- I never really noticed crazy partying because I wasn't hanging out in the clubs at night. We had kids with us, so obviously that wasn't an option, but even if we'd been just adults, we prefer to go to the shows and then have a single quiet drink up on the deck (or maybe just dessert) before heading to bed. We're not really night owls, preferring to get to sleep in order to be one of the first off the ship in port.

We avoided the hairy chest contests and all of that typical Spring Break crap by hanging out by the waterslides when we were with the kids, or in Serenity when they were in Camp Ocean. Yes, we knew it was going on, but we could easily avoid it.

Thanks for the replies.  Maybe we should look for a 7 day cruise, just to be safe.

purplephenom

If you're comparing to Viking, Carnival will likely seem much louder to you, but you can definitely find quieter places to hang out.

If you look for a 7 day, and you can time it for when kids are in school, the ship will also be somewhat less crowded, and that may help.  Also, before you go, read some reviews of whatever ship you end up on- someone usually points places to chill that will look like they'll appeal to you.

RandomUser123

Ultimately the experience is how you make it. Any cruise ship can be a party ship if you want to party. Any cruise ship can also be relaxing if you want to relax. It has something for everyone.

ProgRockCruiser

ProgRockCruiser

If you are expecting something like Viking River cruise-quiet, you will not find it.

But Carnival is probably comparable to Norwegian.

As others have said, if you want to find a truly quiet spot, there will be plenty available - Serenity deck, or the Library (if there is still one on that ship), or an open deck at the front, or sometimes somewhere on the Lido deck or the deck above.

We were just on a 5-day cruise (Elation, out of Canaveral).  It was not what I would call 24/7 party, and there were always places to go retreat from the crowds.

3 and 4 day cruises, especially over Spring Break, will attract the party crowd.  I have also heard (but cannot prove) that certain ports (cough Miami cough) tend to attract a more party-oriented crowd (Port Canaveral is not one of them).

However, a 7 day cruise while school is in (Jan or Feb, mid-April to early-May, Sept through mid-Nov, or early Dec) is certainly going to attract a quieter crowd, so if you want to play safe, stretch out the cruise length as far as you can!

How do you know 3-4 day cruises are booze cruises if you have never been on a cruise shorter than 7 days?  I have been on several shorter cruises on Carnival, including both Victory and Liberty within the last month. I have never experienced anything close to what I would consider a booze cruise on these shorter cruises.  The closest I have come to a booze cruise was an 8 day cruise on Horizon.  There were definitely a LOT of party animals on that cruise.

meanjean80

I was just on a 5 day that was (ahem) supposed to go to Havana.  Did not find excessive partying.  I have also sailed Norwegian and I found very little difference in the atmosphere between the two.  Least 'partying' cruise I have ever been on?  My Carnival Panama Canal transit, where it was in general an older demographic.  I have heard the shorter cruises (3-4 day) tend to gather a more party crowd, but can't vouch for it because I've never done one.  That said, if you can avoid college spring break, you probably decrease the chances of any extreme partying.

12 minutes ago, PhillyFan33579 said:   How do you know 3-4 day cruises are booze cruises if you have never been on a cruise shorter than 7 days?

I was going to ask the same question! I've noticed that many of the people who look down their noses at the short cruises and call them "booze cruises" have actually never been on one.

I've been on a 3-night Bahamas cruise out of Miami on NCL during college Spring Break, and a 3-night Carnival cruise to Ensenada out of Long Beach during Fall Break. Between the two, I felt the NCL one was more of a party atmosphere than the Carnival one, but I wouldn't call either a "booze cruise."

The most party atmosphere of the cruises I've been on was our 7-night Western Caribbean out of Houston on NCL, but we were only 27 and 32 at the time, so we were more likely to want to seek out the party (we're 42 and 47 now). We actually did go to the club one night then. LOL

We're going on a 4-night out of Long Beach next week. Since that one happens during the work week (the 3-night ones are over the weekend), I expect it will be even less "party" than the one we went on last year.

If you want to party, you can. If you want to avoid that and relax in relative peace, you can. Your cruise is what you make of it.

Florida Paesano

As someone who lives in South Florida and cruises out of both Port Everglades and Miami, here's my two cents. We have been on the 4 day itinerary on the Victory (Miami) many times and never found the sailings to be a "booze cruise" or too raucous. We are also not "party people" but enjoy the option of being able to choose from many activities throughout the day and evening if we wish to do so.  It's nice to have activities available yet each day we find a shady spot on deck to relax and read.

You can, but in all honesty, the shorter cruises are all about timing.  Taking a shorter cruise that covers a weekend (especially when there is a holiday) or during college breaks will result in a slightly more raucous atmosphere.  I've been on 4 and 5 day cruises, as well as 7 day cruises and did not notice an appreciable difference (with the exception of the CA/NE itinerary which was very quiet).

What's a CA/NE itinerary?  Thanks.

The best party cruises have something fun for everyone.

The Best Party Cruises

You won't be bored on a party cruise.

The magic of a cruise vacation is created with culinary delights, exotic ports of call, comfortable accommodations, carefully curated spaces and, of course, parties. These onboard celebrations can take many forms: large dance parties and quiet lounges, family-friendly and adults-only, adrenaline-pumping and relaxing activities, elegant and come-as-you-are events, and entire ships transformed into themed cruises .

Prepare for fun times on the following ships hosting the best party cruises at sea.

Royal Caribbean: Oasis of the Seas

Explore the eastern and western Caribbean aboard Oasis of the Seas , one of the largest cruise ships in the world. On this 6,771-passenger vessel, 18 decks of fun and 2,109 crew members await your next voyage.

  • Bionic Bar: For late-night parties where "mixology meets technology," order cocktails from unexpected bartenders: robots! These two specialized tech creations are well-versed in classic alcoholic and nonalcoholic cocktails, and they can also mix a bespoke drink designed by you.
  • Adrenaline-pumping amenities: Get ready for day and night thrills at four separate venues. Ripcord by iFly is billed as the only skydiving simulator at sea; North Star allows cruisers to snap stunning photos from the tallest viewing deck found on any cruise ship; Sky Pad provides a virtual reality experience while patrons jump on a bungee trampoline; and the Ultimate Abyss, named the tallest slide at sea, plunges 10 stories down.
  • Surprise events: Scattered throughout the ship are several surprise activities that pop up among the scheduled itinerary of events. Join a toga party; boogie at a disco brigade; dress for a masquerade party; or transport back in time at an '80s-inspired extravaganza.

10 Best Party Cruises

1. oasis of the seas.

Oasis of the seas 70s party

Royal Caribbean is known for making some of the most extravagant cruise ships in the world. Recently, I was on the Oasis of the Seas and the party never stopped.

Whether it was at Spotlight Karaoke, The Rising Tide Bar, The Pig & Whistle English Pub or Blaze Night Club, there was always something going on. Having all these entertainment venues, is one of the best things about the Oasis of the Seas cruise ship, because the fun never stops.

If you like live music and dancing, there is the Music Hall. This bar and club has live performances and a dance floor.

During the day, there is the pool deck with many bars, hot tubs, pools and water slides. Hanging out by the pool is a great time and a great way to meet new people.

Another cool thing about the Oasis of the Seas is the amazing Boardwalk neighborhood, with Johnny Rockets and Playmakers sports bar. If you’re into sports, you’ll have the best time watching a sports game at Playmakers.

Tip: Cruising during winter break, spring break and summer vacation are the best ways to ensure that you will be on a fun party cruise.

2. Norwegian Joy

Norwegian Cruise Line tends to cater towards a younger crowd, so if you’re a young adult , you’ll love cruising with Norwegian. Norwegian is one of the best cruise lines for drinking, partying and having fun.

The Norwegian Joy is a newer cruise ship which began sailing in North America in 2019. This cruise ship has plenty of activities onboard including a virtual reality room, water slides and Go-Karting.

Onboard the Norwegian Joy, there is an adult only area called Spice H20 on deck 17, which is inspired by Ibiza. During the day it’s an area to grab a drink and relax, however in the evening it becomes a completely different atmosphere.

In the evening time at Spice H20, you’ll get to party and dance under the stars, something fun and unique about the Norwegian Joy.

Tip: On most cruise lines passengers have to be 21 to drink. Onboard Norwegian, passengers who are 18 years old can consumer beer or wine in international waters with the permission of a parent.

Virgin Voyages is an adult only cruise line that’s doing things differently. The target market for Virgin Voyages are a younger demographic , however active and open minded cruisers of all ages will feel at home.

The Virgin Scarlet Lady has a cool, fun party vibe. This cruise ship has a tattoo parlour onboard and the “Scarlet Night Party”, which is known as one of the best parties at sea.

For the Scarlet Night, cruise passengers or “sailors”, as Virgin calls them, are told to wear red. Scarlet night is a crazy pool party that is loads of fun! As the night progresses, the party moves down into the various bars and clubs around the cruise ship.

The Manor is the Scarlet Lady’s nightclub, which might be the nicest nightclub at sea! The Manor is a two story night club with a dance floor, live music and a DJ.

5. MSC Meraviglia

The MSC Meraviglia came in 2017. This cruise ship is known for its beautiful two story Infinity atrium, glittering Swarovski staircase and its resort style pool deck. Luckily, MSC tends to be a more affordable cruise line, which attracts a lot of young adults.

Here are some things to expect on this cruise if you like to party:

The TV & Studio bar is an area where you can do karaoke, watch live shows and grab a drink. As it gets later, check out the Meraviglia bar & lounge. This is the night club area where passengers drink, dance and party late into the night.

Overall, the MSC Meraviglia is a fun and beautiful cruise. The great thing about cruising with MSC is that they tend to be very affordable vacation.

6. Wonder of the Seas

The Wonder of the Seas is the newest ship from Royal Caribbean cruise line , and one of the largest cruise ships in the world!

This cruise ship is very similar to the Oasis of the Seas, which is in my opinion, the ultimate party cruise. Of course, the Wonder of the Seas is new and there are even more great things to do!

Cruising on the Wonder of the Seas is a great way to travel and have fun while doing it. There is plenty of entertainment, including an Aqua Show.

Whether it’s during the day or in the evening, the party never stops on Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas.

7. Carnival Vista

Carnival Cruise Vista

Carnival Cruises are always a good time and the Carnival Vista is no different. This ship first set sail back in 2016, and it is known as an affordable and very fun cruise.

In fact, Carnival Cruise Line includes a lot , and is an amazing value for a vacation.

Since Carnival ships tend to be less expensive, they attract a fun and younger demographic. This means that if you’re a young adult, you’ll have no trouble making friends and finding people to party with in the evening time.

On the Carnival Vista, there is the Sky Box Sports Bar, which is a really nice place to watch sports game and have drinks. In the evening, Sky Box turns into a night club with a live DJ and a dance floor.

There are also deck parties, which are outdoor pool parties, with dancing and more.

During the day you can grab drinks at the Blue Iguana Tequila Bar, the poolside bar. This is a great place to have a cocktail and relax by the pool.

8. Norwegian Breakaway

Norwegian cruise Breakaway

When I originally went on the Norwegian Breakaway, I was still a teenager and not old enough to drink. However, one thing I do remember is that the party never stopped.

On the Norwegian Breakaway, there are so many fun activities and there is a great night life. The entertainment and activities, and even the cruise director and staff are very high energy.

Bliss is the night club onboard the Norwegian Breakaway. and it is an absolute blast. With great music from the DJ, a dance floor and bar, you can’t ask for more!

As it gets later, the Norwegian Breakaway, many cruise passengers stop in at O’Sheehans, which is placed conveniently near the Bliss night club. O’Sheehans is a bar and grill that serves wings, burgers and nachos 24-hours a day.

One thing that is super unique about the Norwegian Breakaway, is that there is an ice bar (it’s actually really cold!), where your actual glass, the chairs and decor are made of ice. The Ice Bar is a popular attraction onboard the Norwegian Breakaway, so be sure to check it out.

Tip: If you’re planning on drinking on your cruise, consider purchasing a beverage package as it can cost well over $10 per drink on a cruise!

9. Anthem of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas is known for amazing attractions like indoor sky diving, rock climbing and bumper cars. With these amazing activities onboard, the Anthem of the Seas tends to attract young people who are looking for a good time.

The Anthem of the Seas is one of the largest ships in the world, with over 4,000 passengers. Generally, those who cruise with Royal Caribbean are either younger or, as I like to say, young at heart.

The vibe on the Anthem of the Seas is fun and everyone onboard is looking to have a great vacation.

In the evening, there are plenty of amazing shows going on that are worth seeing. From production shows, guest entertainers and comedians, Royal Caribbean is known for its outstanding entertainment.

Later at night, the party often starts in Boleros, the latin themed night club. Going to the night club is the perfect way to party and meet people, dance and have a great time.

The Norwegian Escape came out in 2015, but is a favorite cruise ship for many! This cruise ship has water slides, a ropes course and many bars.

When it comes to getting drinks, there is Cellars wine bar, the Skyline Bar, which is the casino bar and the Atrium Bar, which is a great place to grab a drink and socialize with people.

The Skyline Bar is where most of the partying and dancing happens later at night.

Similarly to the Norwegian Breakaway, the Norwegian Escape has O’Sheehans, a great place to eat grab a bite to eat late at night with friends.

The Norwegian Escape is a very cool ship with plenty of activities to do. There are fun things going on throughout the day and the party goes late into the evening.

Carnival Cruise Deck Parties: Your Guide to Fun!

Carnival Cruise Line is renowned for its lively and exciting onboard atmosphere, and few events showcase this better than their deck parties. Whether you’re cruising with family, friends, or a significant other, Carnival cruise deck parties offer an incredible opportunity to let loose and have some fun under the stars.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at some of the best Carnival cruise deck parties and what you may want to pack, so you can get ready to dance, sing, and party the night away on your next Carnival cruise vacation.

These parties are an unforgettable highlight of any Carnival cruise. Afterall, there is a reason that Carnival is known as the Fun Ships.

The deck parties offered on each Carnival ship can vary, especially on different length itineraries. These were the deck parties on Carnival Vista during our last cruise.

Carnival cruise ships have deck parties both in the day and in the evening that are hosted by the cruise director and the fun squad. Be sure to check the Fun Times that is delivered to your cabin each night or on the Carnival hub app for dates and times. Let’s start with the evening parties.

Carnival Cruise Deck Parties – Evening

80’s rock-n-glow deck party.

The 80’s theme parties are such a blast and are really popular on Carnival. This 80s night party is on the lido deck (pool deck) and doesn’t start until around 10pm.

Sing, dance, and cheer on the 80s dance contest participants. You don’t want to miss this night.

Carnival cruise deck party - 80s rock n glow party

The Carnival ship fun squad hands out some glow sticks to the first several participants, but I’d suggest bringing your own. They don’t take up much space in your luggage at all but are a fun touch. Older kids especially will enjoy this.

On our last Carnival cruise vacation, there were several people who went all out with a complete 80s costume. The ship photographers even had different 80s themed backdrops where you could get your photos taken.

Amazon has some cool 80s costumes , you can then reuse them for Halloween or your next Carnival cruise.

80s Carnival deck party tip – pack glow sticks, or if you really want to go all out , pack an 80s costume.

Mega Deck Party

The Mega Deck Party is another high energy party that is sure to be a good time. This evening party is poolside on the lido deck. The staff clear out the lounge chairs to make one big dance floor.

Cruise directors lead the fun by teaching several fun line dances. The poolside bars remain open, so grab a drink and join in on the fun.

Carnival cruise mega deck party

White hot night party

The white night party on our recent Carnival Vista sailing was held in the atrium, but it is possible that on different sailings or specific ships that it is held as a deck party.

At this evening Carnival cruise party, they encourage you to wear white, but it is of course not a necessity.

On our sailing it was held on the second elegant evening. This was a fun atmosphere with music from the 90s. The cruise director hosted this party and did a great job of getting the passengers to join in.

Carnival white hot night packing tip – pack something white if you have it. Looking to add something new to your cruise wardrobe? Check out these 21 stylish all white cruise outfits for both women and men.

Silent nights dance party

This is a unique experience. At a silent dance party, you pick up headphones, choose your song, then dance away to your own beat.

Silent dance parties have become a popular activity, our last Royal Caribbean cruise had one as well.

On our Carnival cruise, the silent party was held on the lido deck (pool deck) the later on the same night as the White Hot party.

Carnival cruise deck parties – daytime

Sail away party.

Sail away parties are my absolute favorite, they are the best way to kick off an amazing cruise vacation. The cruise director and some of their entertainment team lead the fun. With great music that you just can’t help but move to, it is the perfect time to show off your dance moves.

I feel like the cruise hasn’t really started until the sail away party.

Carnival cruise line sail away party

Groove for St. Jude

Not only is this a fun deck party, but more importantly it is a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s hospital. On our last sea day, Carnival hosted Grove for St. Jude, where a $12 donation to the Children’s hospital got you a t-shirt and this exclusive dance event. It is definitely a do good and feel good event.

When our cruise ship couldn’t stop in Honduras due to weather, the cruise director (TJ) added a country line dancing class poolside that was a lot of fun too.

Deck parties are one of the things that make cruising so great. Don’t be shy, get out there and take part in the themed parties, you will be glad you did.

What Theme Parties Will Be On Your Carnival Cruise?

Last Updated on April 30, 2024

Carnival has always positioned itself as the fun cruise line, and you can usually feel that from the moment you step onboard. It just has a different energy from other cruise lines. Everyone just seems ready to have a great vacation. As part of the cruise, Carnival hosts theme parties or events.

Previously, it seemed that Carnival was trying to standardize all the events across the fleet. However, it seems that has gone by the wayside. John Heald , Carnival Brand Ambassador, recently shared the theme parties that will be occurring on each ship in the fleet, and they’re pretty varied. It comes down to a lot of factors like the Cruise Director, sailing length, and ship.

Take a look at the different parties below and how they work.

What is a Carnival theme party?

Several nights on a Carnival cruise, they host a party with a specific theme. The parties usually take place on the main Lido pool deck or in the ship’s Atrium area. Guests are encouraged to dress to fit the theme, but it’s not required. Unfortunately, Carnival only schedules 30 minutes for most of these events, which seems way too short for an event you go out of your way to dress up for.

What types of theme parties are there?

There’s a variety of parties, here are some of the more popular ones.

White Hot Night Party

Electric White Night Party on the Carnival Horizon

This is the easiest party to dress for; just wear white. The more, the better. White hats, glasses, watches, accessories, go all out. Most ships with a white party are equipped with black lights to make you pop. It’s an amazing experience to see a room full of people in glowing white dancing away.

Mega Deck Party

This “mega” party will usually take place on the deck by the main pool if the weather allows. The music will be pumping, and Carnival’s fun squad will keep the energy up. There will be limbos, choreographed dances, and more. Carnival recommends wearing red or blue to this party, but we rarely see people dress up in theme for this one.

80’s Rock & Glow

Rock and Glow Deck Party on the Carnival Horizon

Get ready for lots of neon, leg warmers, and high hair. The 80’s Rock and Glow party celebrates everything 80’s. Usually taking place on the Lido Deck, the party features all your favorite music from the 80’s. It seems like one of the better attended and dressed for events on the cruise ship.

Decades Theme Parties

Some ships will also have a theme party dedicated to a specific decade. Typically, in our experience, fewer people dress for these events, but they usually have a great turnout.

Silent Night Disco

silent disco on a cruise ship

The Silent Night Disco is a recent addition to the Carnival fleet but has been on other cruise lines for some time. In a silent disco, you get a set of headphones to listen to the music. There’s a button to change between two different live streams of music on the headsets. That means you can be dancing next to someone who’s listening to a completely different song. If you really want to have fun, go without headphones and enjoy the surreal experience of seeing people dancing in a completely silent room. Well, not completely silent; you’ll have people singing along to the different tracks at the same time, which adds to the experience.

What theme parties are on your Carnival cruise?

John Heald provided the list below in mid-March. Keep in mind these parties can change because of weather, change of cruise director, or adjustment of the cruise itinerary. Usually, you’ll get an email a few weeks before your cruise outlining the parties so you can be prepared. It’s frustrating that Carnival can’t just post this information in the online cruise planner to make it easy for everyone. They have a listing about it on their general website, but it’s outdated and hard to find.

News Release

Carnival corporation to strategically align portfolio and absorb p&o cruises australia into carnival cruise line.

Carnival Cruise Line to boost its capacity by absorbing P&O Cruises Australia in 2025, further optimizing the company's brand portfolio creating operational efficiencies

MIAMI and SYDNEY , June 3, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Carnival Corporation & plc  (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world's largest cruise company, today announced that in March 2025 , the company will sunset the P&O Cruises Australia brand and fold the Australia operations into Carnival Cruise Line , the most popular cruise line in the world.

This change is the latest in a series of strategic moves designed to increase guest capacity for Carnival Cruise Line , the company's flagship brand and the highest-returning brand in Carnival Corporation's global portfolio. This will result in the addition of eight new ships to Carnival Cruise Line's fleet since 2021, including the successful shift of three vessels from sister brand Costa Cruises . In addition, the company recently placed its first new ship order in half a decade for two new Excel-class cruise ships to join Carnival Cruise Line in 2027 and 2028.

Josh Weinstein , chief executive officer of Carnival Corporation & plc. "In 2019, Carnival Cruise Line was 29% of our total capacity, and when we complete this move early next year, Carnival Cruise Line – our highest-returning brand – will make up approximately 35% of our total global capacity. While our company's overall growth between 2019 – 2028 is projected to be less than 2% (CAGR), the majority will be for Carnival Cruise Line , which will grow by approximately 50% over that time period."

In addition to further optimizing the composition of Carnival Corporation's global brand portfolio, the realignment will strengthen the company's performance in the South Pacific through numerous operational efficiencies.

"P&O Cruises Australia is a storied brand with an amazing team, and we are extremely proud of everything we have accomplished together in Australia and the broader region," said Weinstein. "However, given the strategic reality of the South Pacific 's small population and significantly higher operating and regulatory costs, we're adjusting our approach to give us the efficiencies we need to continue delivering an incredible cruise experience year-round to our guests in the region. Carnival Corporation & plc remains committed to Australia and we will continue to be the largest cruise operator in the region with 19 ships calling on 78 destinations and representing almost 60% of the market."

Building on Shared Legacy in the Region  As the P&O Cruises Australia brand retires early next year, the Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure ships will be rebranded and operated by Carnival Cruise Line brand. Pacific Explorer will exit the fleet in February of 2025. Current itineraries will operate business as usual, and guests will be notified in the coming days of any changes to future bookings as a result of this announcement.

When the transition is complete next year, Carnival Cruise Line – which has served the South Pacific since 2013 – will have four ships in the market, including Sydney -based Carnival Splendor and Carnival Luminosa sailing seasonally from Brisbane , in addition to their new sister ships Encounter and Adventure.

Christine Duffy , president of Carnival Cruise Line . "While we plan to make some technology upgrades and other small changes to the two P&O Cruises Australia ships, they will continue to be geared to the unique Australian market with a familiar feel and much of the same experiences for P&O Cruises Australia guests. The most notable change will be the availability of our popular HubApp, enabling guests to make online dining and excursion reservations, request food and beverage delivery, and chat with other guests, among other features. P&O Cruises Australia guests will also be invited to participate in Carnival's loyalty program and promotional offerings specific to Carnival ships sailing in the region."

"Over the coming months, we will find ways to celebrate and honor P&O Cruises Australia – a valued part of our legacy and an important contributor to the tourism industry in the South Pacific ," said Weinstein. "We value the connection our P&O Cruises Australia guests, employees, travel advisor partners, public officials and destinations have with our company and are committed to building on this association moving forward as Carnival."

carnival party cruise

Carnival Cruise and Royal Caribbean make popular smoking changes

C ruise ships put thousands of passengers and crew members in close proximity. In many ways, it's like living in a college dorm where rooms are small, people are packed in, and the inconsiderate actions of one person can impact a lot of people.

If you, for example, opt to be noisy in the halls late at night or have a loud argument (or loud happier activities) in your cabin after others have gone to sleep, you will wake people up. The same logic applies to how you treat public spaces.

Related: Carnival Cruise Line shares a warning about a gross problem

Leave a mess in a shared bathroom or be a slob at the buffet and your actions have an impact on other people. Some actions, however, are not an attempt to be rude, but still impact other passengers.

In a lot of these situations, the impacted party simply has the option to move. If you don't like the smell of whisky, or banana daiquiris and the person next to you at the bar is drinking either one, you only have to move a small bit away to not be impacted.

Smoking, however, cannot be avoided quite as easily. That's why Royal Caribbean and Carnival, at least on their namesake brands, place some pretty heavy limits on where people can smoke.

Where can Royal Caribbean and Carnival passengers smoke now?

Generally, both cruise lines offer a section of the pool deck where people can smoke. That can impact passengers who have to walk through that area, although they could cross the ship and go around, but often by the time they realize they have already been hit by smoke.

Sometimes Royal Caribbean ( RCL ) and Carnival also offer smoking on a lower deck, which is less of a concern because it's not necessary to pass through the area to get anywhere.

The two cruise lines also offer smoking sections in their casinos. In theory, you're supposed to be actively gambling to light up, but in practice, that's very hard to enforce.

Smoking in the casino causes problems because smoke does not stay with the smoker. Even with high-powered air filtration, smoke travels and some sensitive non-smokers get angry at being exposed to second-hand smoke.

Both Royal Caribbean and Carnival have been experimenting with adding secondary smoke-free casinos on select ships. Royal Caribbean has done with all of its Oasis-class ships, turning the former "Jazz on 4" space into a small smoke-free casino and Carnival has done the same thing on 10 of its ships.

Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald shared on Facebook that the cruise line's newest Excel Class ships, Carnival Jubilee, the Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Mardi Gras all offer secondary smoke-free casinos. Six other ships, Carnival Firenze, Carnival Venezia, Carnival Vista, Carnival Dream, Carnival Magic, and Carnival Breeze also have secondary smoke-free casinos.

Allowing smoking on cruise ships is a financial decision

Las Vegas Strip casinos are still largely smoker-friendly despite worker-led efforts to get that changed. The reality is that some gamblers like to smoke and would gamble less (or not at all) if they're not allowed to smoke while playing.

That's a lesson Royal Caribbean International learned the hard way according to its CEO Michael Bayley.

"The dilemma is that there are many people who do want to smoke in the casino. I know that's not a popular response, but it's it's the truth. I'm not judging anyone or anything, but there's a large group of people who do want to smoke in the casino," he said during Royal Caribbean's 2022 President's Cruise, the Royal Caribbean Blog reported.

Royal Caribbean's sister cruise line Celebrity Cruises does not allow smoking in its casinos, but that's not likely to happen on the namesake brand.

"I would say every couple of years, we do test this and we take one or two or three ships we ban smoking in the casino. And the result is less people go in the casino and that's the reality of it," he added.

Carnival Cruise Alcohol Drinks Prices

CruiseMapper logo

This is CruiseMapper's review of the company's alcohol policy and beverage policy rules. It answers the question "Can I bring alcohol on board" and also gives some insights on sneaking alcohol on Carnival cruises. Next short links jump down directly to the answers of h ow much are drinks on Carnival cruises (non-alcoholic beverages, bottled water) and what is the cost of alcohol ( beer , cabin minibars , American Table cocktails prices (signature cocktails from port-inspired onboard dining concept).

Here are also listed Carnival FUN SHOPS liquor menu with prices . Fun Shop menu also includes Cruise Cash (bar/photo credits), flowers, cakes, fruit baskets, cookies, Special Occasions gifts (Wedding-Honeymoon-Birthday-Anniversary packages), bags, T-shirts, hats, Stateroom Decoration kits.

How much are drinks on Carnival cruise (drink prices)

Carnival alcohol and mixed drink prices on cruises are considered "moderate" for moderate drinking only. And the opinion of common folks is these prices do not contain much of the onboard fun. Still, they are pretty decent compared to other major cruise lines. Additional info and tips:

  • the service charge for opening a personal bottle of wine not bought on the premises (Carnival corkage fee) is $10 per bottle (if the wine is consumed in one of the main dining restaurants) and $14 if consumed in a specialty restaurant. All beverage prices include the 15% gratuity. However, Carnival's drink gratuity was increased to 18% (since December 2018).
  • check regularly the "Drinks of the Day" page (the ship's "Fun Times" newspaper) for daily discounted beverages. The "Early Bird Specials" (alcoholic beverages ordered before noon) are at pretty special prices. A "Bloody Mary" is only $3,95 - but only from 9 till 11am.
  • The list of Carnival free alcohol offers includes the Captain's cocktail party, the farewell party, art auctions, Past Guest receptions and free alcohol testing at the onboard duty-free shops (usually on the first day).

Carnival cruise beer prices.

The new "Thirsty Red Frog" ale is offered in 3 sizes: pint (20oz), pitcher (60oz) and beer tubes (101oz) - see below for the prices. It's a private-label freshly onboard-brewed draft beer (brewed by Budweiser) available only on CCL ships.

Originally brewed exclusively for the RedFrog Pub, the "frog-beer" is now served in select ship bars/lounges and it has a taste similar to Killian's Red. As to The Red Frog Pub, the 100-seat indoor/outdoor bar is on the newest liners and also on all Fun Ship 2.0 upgraded ships . Along with Thirsty Red Frog, the pub serves top-rated Caribbean rums and a "best beers Caribbean" collection. Next, are listed Carnival's Draft Beers prices:

  • $5,50 (16oz) and $28,95 (tube of 101oz) for the beers "Modelo Especial", "Dos Equis", "Presidente", "FROG'S PINT" (20oz)
  • Thirsty Red Frog beer price is: $5,50 (20oz), $16,95 (60oz), $27,95 (101oz).

Draft beers on Carnival cruise ships

In May 2017 was introduced a tropical-flavored draft beer via a partnership with the Miami-based Concrete Beach Brewery. The special beer is served exclusively at the "RedFrog Pub & Brewery" on Carnival Vista - the first brewery found on a North America-based cruise liner. The new "Miami Guava Wheat Beer" was hand-crafted by Colin Presby (brewmaster on the shipboard brewery) and made with the best ingredients.

  • Miami Guava beer has a light body and its primary ingredient is pink guava, also used in Miami's popular guava pastries. The new beer is available on a limited basis, and joins the 3 other original draft beers brewed on the Carnival Vista ship - ThirstyFrog Port Hoppin' IPA (floral flavor, with passion fruit and citrus overtones), ThirstyFrog Caribbean Wheat (unfiltered lager with banana aroma and spices) and FriskyFrog Java Stout (with hints of coffee).
  • Concrete Beach Brewery is an "Alchemy & Science" beer brand, operating as an independent subsidiary of "The Boston Beer Company". Other "Alchemy & Science" breweries in the USA include Angel City Brewery (Los Angeles) and Coney Island Brewing Co (Brooklyn, NYC New York). Their most popular draft beers are named "Tropic of Passion" (Miami), Angel City IPA (LA), and Coney Island Mermaid Pilsner (NYC).
  • US-homeported Carnival ships serve the Concrete Beach Brewery's Rica Wheat IPA, Angel City Brewery's Pilsner, Coney Island's Hard Root Beer, and 1609 Amber. On a regional basis, Carnival ships leaving from Miami offer Concrete Beach Brewery's Stiltsville Pilsner, ships from Long Beach (Los Angeles) offer Angel City Brewery IPA, and ships departing from NYC offer Coney Island Mermaid Pilsner.
  • Carnival Cruise Line also offers draft beers brewed either locally (in homeports) or within the homeport state. Such beers are offered on cruise ships leaving from NOLA New Orleans, Galveston TX, Baltimore MD, and Tampa FL, as well as on ships to Alaska and Hawaii.

In October 2019, Carnival introduced fleetwide the seasonal brew "ParchedPig Pumpkin Ale" (cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, gingerbread, herbs, caramel, brown sugar). The beer is offered in both bottles (22-oz) and on draft, and in 3 variations - West Coast IPA, Toasted Amber, and Beach Lager.

if you buy 4 beers you get the 5th one for free in the bucket. It's exactly what the beer bucket says: "Fewer trips to the bar - more lounge chair time"! Now about Bon Voyage / Fun Shop beer-packages (4-pack prices):

Carnival Fun Shops liquor prices (alcohol, beer, drink packages)

Bon Voyage is open for business from Monday through Friday (9 AM to 6 PM EST) and closed on Memorial-Independence-Labor days, Thanksgiving, Christmas-New Years days.

  • Bon Voyage/Fun Shop orders are accepted up to 1-week prior to departure.
  • If an item is not available at the sailing time, an item of equal value will be substituted.
  • Fun Shop purchases will not show up on your booking info (meant to be a surprise after all). Carnival sends confirmation emails. If you didn't receive the email (sometimes it just happens) - send a request for confirmation.
  • All prices below are per bottle and don't include tax.
  • Alcohol brands are occasionally changed.
  • Tips: Fresh lemon and lime you can order via 24-hour room service (complimentary). If you buy souvenir glass, you can mix your "Bon Voyage" drinks in it and carry them wherever you want on the ship.

Fun Shop drink packages (beer, soda, bottled water, juices/mixers, energy drinks)

Tip: Fun Shops water cost is pretty high. Instead, you can buy a gallon (3,8 L) of distilled water from your cabin steward for US$3. Or use for free tap water on the boat - it is perfectly fine for drinking.

Carnival Bon Voyage alcohol policy rules

  • Any alcohol purchased through Fun Shops is delivered to staterooms (not to dining room tables).
  • If you buy wine through Bon Voyage, you don't pay a corkage fee.
  • There's a limit of max 2 bottles per cabin when ordering liquor (until recently it was 4 btls).
  • In the above list if you don't see something be sure to call/ask.
  • Due to Alabama and Texas alcohol laws, Carnival ships departing from Mobile AL and Galveston TX can't deliver alcoholic drinks to staterooms until the ship is in international waters (delivery may even be delayed until the following day).

Bon Voyage/Fun Shops prices updates

In January 2018, Carnival added a 15% delivery fee to any items pre-purchased from Fun Shops (prior departure). However, it doesn't apply to all purchases. The list of not charged items include packages ( Bottomless Bubbles , Cheers , Cruise Cash , Internet, water packages). The new delivery fee doesn't apply also to any liquor packages bought onboard with intent to carry home at the end of the voyage. The charge is added when, after having made Fun Shops selections, passengers make an actual purchase.

Carnival regularly makes "price corrections" on its Bon Voyage/Fun Shop liquor. While 12-year scotch from $75 now is $80, it's still way cheaper than $7-8 a drink at ship's bars.

  • In March 2013, CCL renamed its retail section from "Bon Voyage" to "The Fun Shops". Along with the name, they changed prices as well.
  • On most items prices were increased from 20 to 40%. Some of the "most expensive" examples are 9" BV Cakes ($9,95 to $14), "Fruit Supreme" basket ($39 to $50), and most of the liquor (up by 10-15% on average).
  • In June 2013, liquor prices were souring up again - the most "extravagant" cases showed up to a 25% increase.
  • Carnival Bon Voyage liquor prices are in US dollars, both per bottle and per glass (1,5 fl oz, 45 ml). The list of services (besides ordering liquor and fine wines) also includes special offers and various Carnival branded merchandise.
  • Fun Shop alcohol prices are about 2-3 times higher compared to your local liquor store. However, the savings you'll make onboard with this option make them well worth the purchase. While these prices may somehow seem a little bit over the edge, this service is a very convenient option to start your vacation.
  • Bon Voyage alcohol ordering saves good money. Most liquor brands are in 33,8 fl oz (1L) bottles, which makes these "alcohol packages" great deals.
  • And remember, the limit is 2 bottles per cabin.

Carnival Cruise Lines alcohol policy

The company's alcohol policy is mostly about bringing wine on Carnival ships . The allowance is one 750ml bottle of wine/Champagne per 21+yo passenger, only once (on embarkation day) and only in carry-on luggage.

Bringing alcohol on Carnival ships

Follows the list of "not allowed" alcohol-related rules.

  • selling/serving alcohol to passengers under 21 yo. Carnival reserves the right to refuse to sell alcohol to anyone.
  • buying alcohol for under-aged passengers
  • The legal drinking age on Carnival ships is 21 years of age - both for purchasing and consumption of alcoholic beverages at all bars-lounges-shops.
  • purchasing alcohol in seaports and onboard (duty-free) shops - your liquor is retained and stored until the end of the voyage.
  • Carnival's corkage fee (additional wine/Champagne serving charge when the wine wasn't bought on the premises) is $10 per bottle (if consumed in Main Dining Room) and $14 per bottle (specialty restaurants / at a fee).
  • "All you can drink" cruise deals are offered also on ship-charters and as a bonus on party-themed cruises .
  • Free alcohol on Carnival ships is offered at Captain's Welcome and Farewell cocktail parties, Past Guests receptions, art auctions, alcohol testings (at duty-free shops, usually on the first day), Steakhouse reservations (free wine on first-night promotions).

Carnival beverage policy

Carnival's alcohol and beverage policy rules were implemented (as officially stated) "to control the liquor consumption of minors and the quantities consumed that lead to the disruptive behavior of others on board" - meaning to avoid shenanigans at sea.

Bringing water/soda on Carnival cruises

According to the old beverage policy:

  • the allowance was max 12 bottles/cans (max 20oz each, sealed) of non-alcoholic beverages (soft drinks, bottled water, juice, milk, iced tea, etc.
  • It allowed bringing soda on Carnival ships, but - only in carry-on luggage, in original and sealed containers (meaning not opened) and on each embarkation.
  • "Each embarkation" meant you can do so at each port of call. It was an unwritten rule and one of the coolest "tips and tricks"). However, purchasing sodas at call ports is rather expensive.

(NEW) Carnival drink policy changes

Starting July 9, 2015, Carnival Cruise Lines changed radically its beverage policy, implementing new rules on bringing water on Carnival ships. Signs with beverage policy changes were posted at all homeports.

  • Passengers are no longer allowed to bring their own bottled drinks on the ships. The main goal (as officially announced) is to lower the number of attempts by customers to smuggle alcohol using PVC bottles. Checking PVC bottles for liquor smuggling slows down the embarkation process, as security staff checks each bottle.
  • Passengers are allowed to bring max 12 unopened cans (volume 12-oz) or cartons per person. The list of canned drinks includes soda, juices, milk, sparkling water - stored in carry-on luggage.
  • Large coolers are not allowed, but you can take small coolers (max size 12x12x12 inches, or 30x30x30 cm) as carry-on luggage. These are used for non-alcoholic beverages and/or medications.

Since October 2015, in all call ports, Carnival passengers are allowed to bring nonalcoholic drinks on the ship. The allowance is only if the drinks are canned (or in cartons 12 ounces / 0,35 L or less). The enforced limit per person is 12 cans/cartons. Previously, the allowance for boarding the ship with beverages was for homeports only. The new rule didn't affect the ban on bottled beverages (enforced in July).

Carnival's wine policy remained unchanged, allowing passengers to bring 1 bottle of wine/champagne per person (750 ml, unopened, in carry-on luggage). No other liquor is allowed on board. Also unchanged is the rule about bringing distilled water onboard, excluding only passengers who need it for babies or CPAP machines ("continuous positive airway pressure").

(NEW) Bottled water prices

Carnival Cruise Line's bottled water prices were USD 2,99 (plus tax) for a 12-pack. The pricing is if you buy it before the voyage. The pack will be delivered to your cabin before departure. Onboard water price was USD 4.99 (plus tax).

However, In March 2016, bottled water prices were raised by over 30%. The price for 12-pack of water was USD 3.99, (up from USD 2.99, or 33 cents per 17-oz bottle). In December 2016, Carnival raised water prices again. The current bottled water price for 12-pack (16,9 fluid oz bottles) is USD 4.50 (plus 18% gratuity if ordered onboard) or over 10% increase.

Sneaking alcohol on Carnival cruise

This is a "cruise alcohol policy" of "cheap fun" people - read why some do it anyway. With Carnival, besides the thrill of sneaking something (alcohol or whatever), most smugglers do it because ships' alcohol prices are not cheap. Even if you order liquor through Fun Shops (prior departure) it's 2-3 times more expensive than in your local store. Some do it simply because Carnival doesn't supply their favorite brand.

alcohol on cruise ship - CruiseMapper

The Fun Shops service allows pre-purchasing liquor to be delivered to staterooms the second day of the voyage. Online purchases' deadline is 1-week prior departure. Two useful "bringing alcohol on ships" tips:

  • If you purchase your alcohol from Fun Shops, you're allowed to put your booze in a stainless steel flask (or Carnival tumbler) and carry it around the ship. Be sure not to take it with you while disembarking in ports. If security personnel find it, they will confiscate the flask when you re-board the ship. Of course, only if there's alcohol in it.
  • Pack your empty flask in the carry-on bag. If you pack it in checked baggage, you'll most probably get called to the "naughty guys room" to open luggage for inspection.

How to smuggle alcohol on Carnival cruises?

This is the smuggler's know-how for sneaking alcohol on cruise ships in general. The question of how to smuggle alcohol on ships is one of the industry's oldest. Smuggling alcohol is against cruise lines policy rules. This practice is forbidden, illegal, emotionally dangerous - don't do it! Ship's personnel check passengers' luggage - if you get caught, the hooch will be confiscated (basically that's all).

  • The confiscated bottle(s)/cans are stored for safekeeping until the morning of the voyage's last day). The "illegal" beverages (liquor/water/soda/wine) must be in original, manufacturer-sealed containers - other containers won't be returned. All unsealed liquids are discarded, without any compensation.
  • "Rum Runner flask" (costs around $10) has the best chance to go through security checks. These flasks are usually smuggled in checked baggage and are almost undetectable. However, if the security checks your bags for another reason and sees them, flasks will be taken and not returned.
  • "Wine Rack" is the latest booze-smuggling device. This boob enhancing, alcohol-filled bra contains over 25oz/750ml of your chosen liquid. They are absolutely right by saying this is way better than a regular boob job, and way cheaper too. Women look beautiful and save money on overpriced cruise drinks. The sneaking alcohol tool price is only US$30. The same price is the "BeerBelly" (capacity up to 80oz/2,4L).
  • Adults with a record of sneaking alcohol on Carnival ships, adults buying liquor for underage passengers and adults with other regular violations of the company's beverage policy may end up even with "early" (no-compensation) disembarkation or get banned for life.

Carnival is known for ultra-cheap cruises. I sailed on its new ship — and I'm not sure that's completely true.

  • Carnival Cruise Line is well known for its  relatively affordable fares .
  • But my recent Carnival Firenze cruise was filled with enticing pay-to-play amenities.
  • Even the complimentary venues had up-charged options, making it easy for travelers to blow past their budget.

Insider Today

If you aren't careful, your Carnival cruise could quickly become as expensive as an Oceania one.

Peruse any of the "US' most budget-friendly cruise lines" lists, and you're sure to find Carnival somewhere near the top. In 2024, its most affordable itinerary is $164 per person for a four-night sailing from Miami — more than $20 cheaper than Royal Caribbean and Norwegian's least expensive ones.

That's about $40 a day for food, accommodations, onboard entertainment, and the ability to see several destinations in one vacation.

Sounds like a steal, right?

carnival party cruise

Well, not quite.

You'll be met with a flurry of tempting up-charged amenities the moment you board Carnival's ships . So, if you're prone to giving into these little luxuries, you can kiss your budget goodbye.

I went on my first Carnival cruise in mid-May: a four-night sailing from Long Beach, California, on Carnival Firenze.

carnival party cruise

I paid $735 for a solo interior cabin, including optional gratuities.

If that sounds relatively expensive, you'd be right. Carnival Firenze is the company's latest vessel, and newer cruise ships generally command a pricing premium.

It's also worth noting that I had booked it less than 10 days before embarkation. Oops.

I thought I knew what to expect when it came to the cruise industry's 'pay-to-play' game.

carnival party cruise

Mass-market cruise lines have been increasingly slapping fees on on-board amenities and activities. I knew excesses like alcohol, WiFi, and specialty dining would cost extra, as is typical across the industry.

The only one I fell for was WiFi, of which the premium package cost me $85 for all four nights. I was there for work, after all.

carnival party cruise

Cocktails were generally about $13, while beers and seltzers were about $9 each. Specialty restaurants like teppanyaki and Italian cost about $40 per person, while the steakhouse was $49.

None of these were surprising. Even premium cruise lines charge extra for higher-end restaurants and beverages.

But on Carnival, it felt like almost everything beyond the bare minimum carried an additional fee.

carnival party cruise

Even complimentary dining venues dangled tempting dollar sign-afflicted dishes — including the buffet, where guests had to pay for chicken wings.

Want an empanada? The Empanadas and Pie kiosk sold them for $1.50 apiece.

carnival party cruise

Craving a lobster roll? The dinnertime Seafood Shack booth (which otherwise has free breakfast and lunch options) sells one for $18.

Looking for some pizza? You could grab a free pepperoni slice at the pizza stand — or pay $6 for the fancier Korean barbecue steak pie.

That darn dollar sign symbol tormented me morning to night, on and off the ship.

carnival party cruise

I had been craving a juice for breakfast. Too bad it was $5 (in the complimentary main dining room, no less).

I would've loved some popcorn during the evening movie showings. A bag costs $4.

During our second stop in Ensenada, Mexico, I briefly considered taking the shuttle from the port to downtown. However, that would've been another $4.

But the most egregious 'incident' came during afternoon tea.

carnival party cruise

The daily schedule denoted pay-to-play events with a small dollar sign symbol. "Tea Time" didn't have one, so off I scurried, excited for some free mid-afternoon caffeine and sweet treats.

You can probably guess where this story is headed.

After I took my seat, a waitperson arrived at my table with an organized box of tea bags, giving me just enough time to review my options before announcing they were $1.50 each. On principle, I declined.

A few minutes later, he returned to my table to let me know that he did, in fact, have some free options stashed behind the up-charged bags. They were the same as those available in the buffet: Lipton and Bigelow's green tea.

During breakfast, one of the servers joked that my croissant and Lipton tea would cost $20 each.

carnival party cruise

I knew he was kidding, but for a split second, I was worried he wasn't. At that point, I expected almost everything I wanted to come with a price tag.

Carnival, I get it. Get that bag, sis!

carnival party cruise

But not being immediately upfront about the $1.50 tea bag and otherwise free options felt unecessarily deceitful.

In the company's defense, not everything had a price tag. Fun activities like the mini-golf course, waterslides, and fear-of-height-inducing ropes course were complimentary and great for forgetting how annoyed I was about "tea gate."

Carnival is just following the industry trend.

carnival party cruise

There's a reason onboard spending has skyrocketed over the last year. Mass-market cruise lines have been increasingly adopting a model reminiscent of budget airlines: offer a low base fare and present a slew of irresistible amenities at an additional price.

Competitors like Norwegian and Royal Caribbean are repeat offenders, too.

carnival party cruise

On Norwegian Prima , mini-golf costs $10 per person, while the VR arcade sets guests back $29 for one hour.

On Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas , mini-golf is free! But walk slow if you decide to spend money on the ship's part-agility, part-ziplining course. It costs $49 to participate — and could be completed in a minute or so.

So yes, going on an ultra-cheap Carnival cruise is possible if you’re like me, stubbornly unwilling to spend extra.

carnival party cruise

But if you're a pushover who easily gives into temptation, be sure to develop a backbone before you cruise with Carnival .

If you don't, mai tais and movie popcorn costs could add up quicker than expected.

Vladimir Putin just tacitly admitted Crimea is not really part of Russia

By Peter Dickinson

Vladimir Putin just tacitly admitted Crimea is not really part of Russia

Ukraine achieved a major diplomatic breakthrough last week, securing the green light from key allies for strikes inside Russia using Western weapons. The Russian reaction to this landmark news has bordered on the hysterical , with a host of Kremlin officials and propagandists denouncing the West and vowing terrible revenge.

Predictably, Vladimir Putin led the way, issuing yet more of the thinly-veiled nuclear threats that have become his trademark. Speaking in Tashkent, Putin warned European leaders of “ serious consequences ,” before reminding them of their own vulnerability. “They should keep in mind that theirs are small and densely populated countries, which is a factor to reckon with before they start talking about striking deep into Russian territory,” he commented .

Close Putin ally and former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev’s response featured an even more explicit nuclear threat. Medvedev, who currently serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, said it would be a “ fatal mistake ” for Western leaders to believe Russia was not ready to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine or individual NATO member states. “This is, alas, not an attempt at intimidation or a nuclear bluff,” he declared.

Russia’s use of nuclear blackmail is no longer particularly surprising, of course. Since the very first days of the Ukraine invasion, Putin has engaged in frequent bouts of nuclear saber-rattling as part of a broader Russian effort to establish so-called red lines and undermine Western support for Ukraine. Nevertheless, this latest example of nuclear bluster is worthy of closer attention as it inadvertently provides revealing insights into the political realities behind Putin’s lofty imperial rhetoric of conquest and annexation.

With his chilling references to “small and densely populated countries,” Putin clearly hoped to intimidate his opponents and signal that the use of Western weapons on Russian territory is a major red line for the Kremlin. But according to Russia’s own logic, this particular red line has already been crossed on hundreds of occasions. Since 2022, Ukraine has routinely used Western weapons throughout the occupied Ukrainian regions that Putin says are now part of Russia, without triggering any discernible escalation from Moscow. In Putin’s new Russian Empire, it would seem, some places are more Russian than others.

Officially, at least, there is no ambiguity in Moscow over the status of the Ukrainian regions claimed by the Kremlin. According to the Russian Constitution, Ukraine’s Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson provinces along with the Crimean peninsula are now all part of the Russian Federation. Russia proclaimed the “return” of Crimea in March 2014, just a few weeks after the lightning military takeover of the peninsula that marked the start of Russia’s Ukraine invasion. More recently, Putin announced the “annexation” of four more Ukrainian provinces in a lavish September 2022 Kremlin ceremony.

Technically speaking, the five Ukrainian provinces subject to unilateral Russian “annexation” should all now enjoy the same protections as the rest of Putin’s realm. In practice, however, it has long been apparent that Moscow has no intention of expanding its nuclear umbrella to cover these regions, or of even attempting to impose its red lines regarding the use of Western weapons.

The Battle of Kherson provides a particularly vivid demonstration of the credibility gap between Russian rhetoric and Russian reality. The only regional capital captured during the entire Russian invasion, Kherson was liberated in November 2022, less than two months after Putin had declared it to be “ Russian forever .” Rather than reach for his nuclear button, Putin responded to this embarrassing setback by ordering his defeated troops to quietly withdraw across the Dnipro River.

The evolving Battle of Crimea is perhaps even more revealing. For over ten years, Putin has insisted the occupied Ukrainian peninsula is now part of Russia, and has rejected all attempts to discuss its status. During this period, the seizure of Crimea has emerged as arguably the most important single element in modern Russia’s national narrative; it has come to be seen as the greatest achievement of Putin’s entire reign, and is widely regarded as a symbol of the country’s return to the top table of international affairs. This official Russian reverence for Crimea initially persuaded many in the West to view the peninsula as off-limits, but failed to deter Ukraine.

Since the early months of the war, Ukraine has been attacking Russian forces in Crimea with every available weapon, including those provided by the country’s Western allies. Western-supplied missiles have played a central role in the Battle of Crimea, enabling Ukraine to methodically deplete Russian air defenses throughout the peninsula and sink numerous Russian warships. The most eye-catching attack of all came in September 2023, when Ukraine used Western cruise missiles to bomb and partially destroy the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol. If Kherson was an embarrassment for Putin, this was a very personal humiliation. Crucially, it did not lead to World War III. Instead, Putin withdrew most of his remaining warships from Crimea to the relative safety of Russian ports.

After Berlin: Tangible strategies for reconstruction following the 2024 Ukraine Recovery Conference

The obvious inconsistency in the Kremlin’s public position regarding attacks on Russian soil has a number of practical implications for the further conduct of the war. It highlights the flexibility of Russia’s red lines, and strengthens perceptions that Moscow is primarily seeking to exploit the West’s own fear of escalation rather than establish any genuine boundaries.

Clearly, no responsible Western leader can afford to completely disregard the threat of nuclear war. At the same time, it is increasingly apparent that Russia’s relentless nuclear saber-rattling is losing its potency. By engaging in regular nuclear threats that never lead to action, the Kremlin has weakened the entire concept of nuclear deterrence and left Russia looking toothless. Based on the experience of the past two years, it now seems safe to conclude that while carpet-bombing the Kremlin might force Putin into some kind of drastic response, targeted attacks on Russian military bases and firing positions across the border from Ukraine are highly unlikely to fuel any kind of major escalation.

The Kremlin’s obvious reluctance to treat “annexed” regions of Ukraine as fully Russian directly contradicts Moscow’s own efforts to portray the occupation of Ukrainian lands as irreversible. While Putin likes to compare himself to Peter the Great and boast of “returning historically Russian lands,” he is evidently in no hurry to grant his Ukrainian “conquests” the kind of unequivocal security commitments that are the ultimate marker of sovereignty. Indeed, after more than a decade, the hundreds of thousands of Russian citizens who have been shipped to occupied Crimea since 2014 will no doubt be wondering how much longer they must wait before the Kremlin finally considers them worthy of protection.

Far from being set in stone, Russia’s territorial ambitions in Ukraine are largely opportunist and will expand or contract based on the military situation. Putin and his colleagues often call on Ukraine to accept the “new territorial realities” created by the current front lines of the war, but their actions send an unmistakable signal that the future of the “annexed” Ukrainian regions is still very much up for debate. Meanwhile, the multiple retreats from “historically Russian land” conducted by Putin’s invading army since 2022 suggest the chances of a nuclear apocalypse have been wildly exaggerated. This should help Kyiv’s Western partners overcome their self-defeating fear of escalation, and encourage them to finally provide Ukraine with the tools, along with the free hand, to finish the job of defeating Russia.

Putin’s next conquests are already in his sights

If Kyiv falls, the Baltics, Moldova, and Balkans are at risk – not just from tanks, but from hybrid warfare which wouldn’t break Article 5

Ivana Stradner

For the next seven days The Telegraph is running a series of exclusive essays from international commentators imagining the consequences if Russia were successful in its war. The full list of essays are listed at the bottom of this article.

Russia recently celebrated Victory Day, a major national holiday commemorating the Soviet defeat of Nazi Germany. Speaking before Russian troops in parade formation on Red Square, Putin promised Russia would soon achieve victory again – this time over Ukraine. Such an outcome would imperil not just Ukraine but also security in Europe and beyond. For his next conquests are already in his sights.

The Kremlin has been honest about its desire to weaken Nato, break Western unity and subjugate Russia’s neighbours. For Putin, the war in Ukraine isn’t just about that country. He sees the current conflict as a defining moment in his broader struggle against the West and reshaping the world order.

Putin said that Russia has no plans to attack any Nato country and, as such, too many Western leaders rest easy in the belief that Russia’s war is strictly confined to Ukraine because Nato’s Article 5 is “watertight”. But if Moscow is allowed to prevail in Ukraine, other countries –  including Nato members – will be at far greater risk. Conversely, Western support for Ukraine demonstrates to Putin that he will pay an “even greater” price for an attack against Nato, and is preparing accordingly .

This fact is not lost on the countries closest to Russia. The Baltic nations, first of all, have warned that Russia could “pivot quickly” from Ukraine to invade their territory. Moldova, too, which hopes to break free of Russia’s influence and join the West, fears it would be next if Putin emerges victorious in Ukraine.

Crucially, Russia does not need to send tanks and jets to such places. A victorious, emboldened Russia, engorged on Ukraine and with spare capacity, could rely on hybrid warfare tools, utilising “little green men” both on the ground and in the information space to convince the West that a conflict in there is internal and, therefore, in the case of the Baltics, does not trigger Article 5. This is what German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius meant when warning that Russia could attack a Nato member state within “ five to eight years ”. It need not be as obvious as tanks rolling across a Nato border.

In fact, Russia is already working to destabilise Europe. In May, Nato warned that Russia is waging an “ intensifying campaign” of cyberattacks and other “hybrid” operations against its members. British intelligence has cautioned that Moscow is even planning “physical attacks” on the West.

We know Russia is recruiting far-Right extremists to carry out attacks on individuals, and European intelligence agencies say that Moscow, seeking to weaken us, has staged violent acts of sabotage across Europe and is planning more. The Russians are already attempting to interfere in this month’s European Parliament elections, and the U.S. elections in November are no doubt on Putin’s menu, too.

Meanwhile, Russia is using its hybrid warfare machine to foment chaos in Nato’s soft underbelly: the Western Balkans. Using information operations and corrupt influence, Moscow aims to stoke ethnic tensions between Serbia and Kosovo and within Bosnia and Herzegovina. As Georgia faces massive protests triggered by a proposed law that targets civil society and its aspirations to join the EU, Russia is calculating security assistance. With the elections in Moldova and its vote on EU membership this year, Russia will likely not miss an opportunity to sow further discord in the country.

A Russian victory over Kyiv would also carry serious implications in the Indo-Pacific and beyond. If Moscow is able to outlast the West in Ukraine, Beijing may conclude it would face feeble resistance to Chinese military aggression against Taiwan . Furthermore, Moscow’s aims to strengthen its military footprint in Africa, which it has already worked to do with the assistance of the remnants of its Wagner mercenary group. Fundamentally, Russia and China believe the decline of US global power is essential and have been advocating for a multipolar international system not led by Washington.

The West can only win this war if leaders understand Putin’s game. Since Putin first came to power, he has conducted an offensive aimed at gaining “reflexive control” of the West. “Reflexive control” is an old Soviet concept, foreign to most Western nations. It encompasses interfering in another country’s decision-making until the government is compelled to take actions in the Kremlin’s interest. In the words of Russia’s Ministry of Defense, Russia’s war game works through “massive psychological manipulation of the population to destabilise the state and society”. This is what Moscow did with some success in Ukraine before its Maidan Revolution in 2014 when the people fought back.

President Zelensky said “we can and should think only about how to win”. Alas, this sentiment is not shared by many in the West, leaving ambiguous what victory means and promising to stand with Ukraine “for as long as it takes.” This is a dream come true for Putin giving him the ability for a protracted war.

Make no mistake: the West has the power to ensure Russia’s defeat. Collectively, Western countries dwarf Russia economically and outclass it militarily. But they must translate that potential into reality. This requires patience and determination to stand by Ukraine and provide it with the weapons and training its forces need to win on the battlefield. Otherwise, Ukraine will just be the first domino to fall.
