Celebrity or Princess to Japan

Cool Cruiser

These are my only two choices for June 2025.  Cruised both in the past and am thinking Celebrity but has anyone experienced this in the near past. Post CoVid with all the changes?  Appreciate all thoughts.

I was faced with same decision recently and it was an easy call.  My whole point of doing a Japan cruise was to see Japan not sit on a boat.  Celebrity has a much more port intensive itinerary.  At least that’s what I found when reviewing my dates. Easy call for me.

Pushka

We are going with Azamara. Very port intensive.  April 2025 for Sakura blossom. Princess uses Diamond. It's fine but not as nice as Celebrity ships.. It was also dominated by a passenger group from a particular nation who likely won't be allowed to travel to Japan for the moment.

Miaminice

We are huge fans of Japan - three cruises so far.  We are also huge fans of Celebrity. We have been to Japan on Millennium this year and to Thailand and Vietnam on Solstice. Both cruises were great. No complaints at all.

However, that being said, with fabulous Japan the focus was always on the destination and the ship was merely our hotel. I would suggest to choose by itinerary. you can´t go wrong with either. Maybe this helps:  Latest Japan cruise on Millennium: https://boards.cruisecritic.co.uk/topic/2970853-celebrity-millennium-japan-10242023-liveish-report/

I am struggling with this as well.  Is there anyone here that has done this on the Diamond Princess?

I am kind of leaning this way as there are many more Japanese locals onboard and more Japanese culture.  Anyone?

Also noting that the Princess rooms are a bit less expensive.

Other ideas for Japan?

We had a great time on our Diamond Princess B2B in a Reserve Collection mini suite this past July cruising around Japan with a couple stops in Korea. See my Live From thread below. One thing about cruising around Japan on the Diamond, you will definitely get submersed into the culture while onboard, from being able to visit a Japanese Bath, enjoying Japanese cuisine, to having dual Japanese and English speaking cruise directors!

We're doing the same in June 2024. Easy choice compared to Celebrity.

Sebastien V

We traveled with both Celebrity, on the Beyond (a transatlantic crossing) and the Princess Diamond, for seven days, to the Southern Islands of Japan and Keelung. We were there at the beginning of September, and were faced with a typhoon, which added two days at sea.

In short, compared to the Beyond, the Princess Diamond boat seemed a little old to us, while still retaining beautiful remains. The service was nothing short of excellent. The entertainment seemed two or three notches below what Celebrity offers. The quality of the MDR, on the other hand, was much higher than what we experienced on that of Celebrity. Unfortunately, their steakhouse was replaced by another concept, Brazilian grills, which spoke less to us. We also really liked the wines on Princess.

Whatever the choice, please keep in mind that our Japanese friends, the majority on the Princess Diamond, are generally much more reserved than the Europeans (we are from Belgium) and Americans. They don't know much English. However, they are definitely more respectful of others, and their enthusiasm for all dances is extraordinary!

The most important thing. Itinerary.

Thank you everybody for the guidance   So I booked with Celebrity as that went to Mt Fuji and an overnight in Osaka.   Booked in aqua class for the first time so hopefully the food will be better in blu……Japan here I come.  This will be my sons college graduation gift.

We are doing the 13-day Best of Japan this May.  If all goes well, I will be doing a live review and posting a lot of pictures.

Taking a peek at the Princess itineraries and I note that they have some much longer itineraries...

Good choice. I booked the same for first week July 2025 for my family of 4 (two teens).  Already booked and paid for excursions for 4 too. That hurt.

You are missing that Milennium might be older but she´s been beautifully refurbished. When we were on her this year we were positively surprised. Fresh, modern... top notch!

Plus, I wonder why you might say that guest on Princess are more respectful  🤔 Unless you take for granted that there are more Japanese guests on board.

We're doing an 18-day. Lots of less-traveled ports.

We went on Azamara Quest 15-day intensive Japan with Busan, So Korea in March 2023.  It was unbelieveable.  We timed cherry blossom season spot on and it was incredible.  We like small ships and everything was excellent.  It is a very busy itinerary - leave Tokyo and a sea day, then 14 ports back to back to back…until return to Tokyo.

Since I was only going once, I wanted to go around the entire island.  I was completely satisfied.

Thankyou. This thread had me second guessing.  Ours is one way, Tokyo to Osaka. In 2025 so a while to wait. For April 6 from memory.

Northern Aurora

In 2018 we did a Bering Sea transpacific to Japan followed by a cruise around Japan.

Covid interfered with a scheduled cruise in 2021 but we are returning in March for a B2B on Celebrity.  Only three repeat ports on that B2B and a number which we did not visit in 2018.  Since we spent five days in Tokyo in 2018 after leaving the ship (had a private guide for two of those days) this time we will spend several days in Yokohama before boarding the Millennium.

Island? Japan is made up of many islands.

If you really want to get the full picture, consider a longer cruise or land trip.

For example, Holland America offers a 28-day trip around the five main islands of Japan during cherry blossom season (moving from south to north, following the path of the blooms). I did this in March/April 2023 and it was a nice complement to my previous land trips where I mainly explored Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and the areas around them.

17 hours ago, cruisemom42 said: Island? Japan is made up of many islands.

Correct.  I should have clairified Honshu - which is considered the Japanese mainland.

Cool Cruiser

Absolutely wonderful review, took me a couple of hours to absorb it all. So many memories and I so totally agree with your thoughts on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

We were there on the anniversary Aug 6, 2015. My sister and friend were invited to participate in the memorial service at 8.15 am they each held a flag of different countries as a prayer for peace around the world was said. They were to wave the flag as the country was mentioned. We spent the day and later in the evening was a procession of thousands of decorated lanterns floating down the river. Most of the lanterns were decorated by local school children.

BEAUTIFULLY DONE!

How did you do such a wonderful pages?

Had to bookmark your pages to look at another time.

Thank you, great trip report and pictures.

Thank you for the great report.

Your review was wonderful. I have one question. Did I read correctly that a Visa for Shanghai is not necessary? We are doing Celebrity Millennium in October (Japan, South Korea and China). Our travel agent said we needed a Visa.

It depends on your itinerary. Shanghai has a visa free transit rule. It can be applied if you arrive in Shanghai from another country than China, stay less than 144 hours within the region of Shanghai and leave directly to a third country (e.g. direct flight home).

As I said, it depends on the itinerary. On the cruise subject of the review we did not require a visa. On a cruise after that we did.

Many people on this cruise received incorrect information from the TAs or even Celebrity directly. So I recommend you to closely look at the transit rule and see if it applies to your itinerary.

If you tell me the date of your cruise, I can take a look at the itinerary.

Thank you for all of that information. We are not staying in Shanghai, We are going straight to the airport and then home to New York. Our trip is from October 13 to October 27. Would you mind letting me know if we need one and also where to look, Thank you.

Then the visa exception can be applied... I have no daubt.

The itinerary is basically the same as ours in regards of the sequence of counties visited.

The transit exception is based on a three country rule:

You are sailing from South Korea (country A) to Shanghai (country B) and leave to the US (country C) within the time frame.

Unless your flight has no stop within China you will not require a visa (unless there´s something I don´t see or you are citizen of a nation to which the rule does not apply).

You can find some information here

Loved this Asian review!! Very nicely done, informative and great pictures. I'll be going to many of these places in 6 months on a world cruise....can't wait! Lots of our tours or places we had decided to see were in your report, so this gave me a little preview. Thanks for your hard work. Glad you had a good time. :D

We are on the same cruise and heading directly back to the US as well. However, our flight doesn't leave until about 5pm so we have time to kill in Shanghai (we've been previously). Since we don't want to hassle with our luggage, we did sign up for the ship's transfer with a city "tour" to the airport to help pass the time and revisit the Sky Tower. I had previously believed our itinerary worked for visa free, but was having a hard time getting written confirmation from Celebrity. However, just recently I saw in writing, on the Celebrity site, an apparent confirmation of this. They say you must take their tour to be visa free, but I wouldn't think that's the case. That's just them pushing their tours. We were going to take their tour anyway, so it worked out for us. It was just good to see it in writing by Celebrity.

Duplicate Post.

Duplicate post.

They say you must take their tour to be visa free, but I wouldn't think that's the case . That's just them pushing their tours.

And you are correct!

The transit regulation have nothing to do with cruises or Celebrity or booked tours...

As long as the factors apply (three country rule), you could go ride a bike. As long as you do it less than 144 hours, you are fine :D

We visited Japan last year on the Celebrity Millennium (our first cruise with Celebrity) and frankly were disappointed. The ship is old and looks tired. There was no coin operated laundry ($$$$). On a 2 week cruise, they ran out of shrimp, hot dogs and iced tea. Perhaps other items as well. If this ship is representative of Celebrity, we’ll gladly stick with Princess.

1. Never on more than 20 cruises have we encountered this kind of problems.

2. We had no problems with Millennium. And we even cruised again on her after this cruise. However, she is scheduled for the Revolution Program in Spring 2019 and will be brandnew after.

3. Coin laundries were never present on Celebrity (fine with me). That’s no secret. Easy to find out before the cruise.

Great review thanks. We’re visiting Japan next year for the first time for a cruise on Azamara so finding your review which is so packed with details most helpful.

Yokohama is often called the Garden City, though its name actually means "City by the Bay." Its waterfront area provides a port to the rest of the world as well as beautiful beaches. The waterfront district has unique arts galleries and boutiques and one of the largest Chinatown areas in Japan. Yokohama is the home of Japan's Central Baseball League and Japan's first coffee shop. There is even an indoor beach with sand and water and waves! The second largest city in Japan, Yokohama is home to 3 million people and is a growing, innovative business center. Its large, accessible port has made it Japan's largest international trading center. It certainly maintains its own identity and does not fall into the shadow of Tokyo, a mere 18.6 miles (30 kilometers) from Tokyo.

Japan’s Mt. Fuji is an active volcano about 100 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. Commonly called “Fuji-san,” it’s the country’s tallest peak, at 3,776 meters. A pilgrimage site for centuries, it’s considered one of Japan’s 3 sacred mountains, and summit hikes remain a popular activity. Its iconic profile is the subject of numerous works of art, notably Edo Period prints by Hokusai and Hiroshige.

A stroll through Kyoto today is a walk through 11 centuries of Japanese history. Steeped in tradition, the city has in many ways been the cradle of Japanese culture, and is still the scene of such courtly aesthetic pastimes as moon-viewing parties and tea ceremonies. Of course the city has been swept into the industrialized, high-tech age along with the rest of Japan -- plate-glass windows dominate central Kyoto and parking lots have replaced traditional town houses. Elderly women, however, continue to wear kimonos as they make their way slowly along the canal walkways. Geisha still entertain, albeit at prices out of reach for most visitors. Sixteen hundred temples and several hundred shrines surround central Kyoto. There's rather a lot to see, to say the least, so keep this in mind and don't run yourself ragged. Balance a morning at temples or museums with an afternoon in traditional shops, and a morning at the market with the rest of the day in Arashiyama or at one of the imperial villas. For more than 1,000 years, from 794 to 1868, Kyoto was Japan's capital, though at times only in name. From 794 to the end of the 12th century, the city flourished. Japan's culture started to grow independent of Chinese influences and to develop its unique characteristics. Unfortunately, the use of wood for construction, coupled with Japan's two primordial enemies, fire and earthquakes, has destroyed all the buildings from this era, except Byodo-in in Uji. The short life span of a building in the 11th century is exemplified by the Imperial Palace, which burned down 14 times in 122 years. Much of what you see in Kyoto today dates from the first half of the 17th century. But such was Kyoto's decline in the 17th and 18th centuries that when the power of the government was returned from the shoguns to the emperor, he moved his capital and imperial court to Edo, renaming it Tokyo. Though that move may have pained Kyoto residents, it actually saved the city from destruction. While most major cities in Japan were bombed flat in World War II, Kyoto survived. And where old quarters of Tokyo have been replaced with characterless modern buildings -- a fate that Kyoto has shared in part -- much of the city's wooden architecture of the past still stands.

Hiroshima City facing the Hiroshima Bay in the Seto Inland Sea is one of the most prominent cities in the Chugoku region, and a center of the administration and economy of Hiroshima. Six rivers flow through the city, so it is also called the "city of water." It was devastated by an atomic bomb in World War II. All structures vanished, but one miraculously remained standing. It is called the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome, and Hiroshima is internationally known as the city of peace. Hiroshima developed as a castle town after a feudal lord, Mori Terumoto, built Hiroshima Castle in the 16th century. Hiroshima Castle is also called Ri-jo, or Carp Castle, because the exterior painted in black resembles a black carp. There are a number of must-see places, such as the Shukukei-en Garden, or a miniature scenery garden, so named because there is a miniature version of Lake Xiyu (West Lake) in Hangzhou in China and many other miniatures of scenic sights, and the old Mitaki-dera Temple built in 809. The red Taho-to Tower in the Mitaki-dera Temple was transferred from a shrine in Wakayama as a memorial tower for the victims of the atomic bomb attack. Hiroshima also offers gastronomical pleasure, including oysters the culture of which has been going on since 1673 and okonomi-yaki Hiroshima style, unique flour crepes fried with vegetables and noodles that are different at each restaurant.

Busan/Pusan is Korea's second largest city. Tourists often come to this region to hike and to visit the Buddhist Temples located deep within the region's mountains. The Beomeosa Temple, founded in 678 AD, is perhaps one of the most frequented temples in the area and is always packed with worshipers and tourists. For art buffs, Busan offers several museums and historical buildings. If scenery is your thing, try visiting the Dongbaek Island, or bird watch at the Nakdong river estuary.

Hakodate is a city and port located in Oshima. It is the capital city of Oshima Sub prefecture. The city is overlooked by Hakodateyama (Mount Hakodate), a lumpy, totally-forested mountain. The summit of the mountain is easily reached by either hiking trail cable car, or car. The nighttime view from the summit is renowned all over Japan as one of the loveliest sights in the country. A not-so-well known local nickname of the bumpy mountain is Gagyuzan ("Mount Cow's-back"), which alludes to the way the mountain's shape resembles that of a resting cow. Hakodate is home to the famous European-style Goryokaku fort, which was built in the shape of a five-pointed star in 1866. It is now used as a public park. The park is a popular spot in Hokkaido for hanami (cherry blossom viewing). The small but bustling city is also famous as the site of Hijikata Toshizo's last stand. The city is also known for Hakodate Shio Ramen, where instead of having pork cutlet placed inside the soup, sliced squid is used. On a similar note, Hakodate's city fish is the squid. Every year (around July) the city gets together for the Hakodate Port Festival. Hordes of citizens gather in the streets to dance a wiggly dance known as the Ika-odori (Squid Dance), the name of which describes the dance appropriately. The glowing lights of squid-catching boats can be seen in the waters surrounding the city.

The city of Aomori owes its development to its unique position as transportation and distribution hub for the north of Japan. This vital factor also holds out great promise for continued urban development as Aomori heads into the 21st century. With a population of about 290,000, Aomori is an attractive modern city, bordered on one side by the Hakkoda mountain range and on the other by the sea and a fine natural harbor. Sitting at the southern end of the international waters of the Tsugaru Straits, Aomori is situated at approximately the same latitude as New York, Beijing, and Rome. As one of Japan's Northern urban centers, Aomori hopes to play an international role in circulating information about life in snowy regions.

Timeless Tokyo Shore Excursions Blend Ancient and Modern

Cruise ships leaving from Tokyo will find Japan conveniently at their fingertips. Japan’s capital city is bustling and energetic, a 24-hour city steeped in culture, history, and luxe experiences . Walk along thousand-year-old cobblestones surrounded by some of the world’s tallest skyscrapers. There’s no shortage of things to do in Tokyo from a cruise ship.

Itching to see Tokyo on two wheels? Take a driving tour through the heart of Tokyo on your way to the 1,092 foot Tokyo Tower, one of the most impressive sights in the city. From the top, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Tokyo. One of the more popular Tokyo shore excursions is a tour of the impressive Imperial Palace, surrounded by bridges, shrines, and evidence of hundreds of years of shogun rule. No cruise from Tokyo is complete without a trip to Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan, which is also considered a sacred pilgrimage site.

On Tokyo shore excursions, try a half-day tour to Mount Hakodate followed by a traditional sushi lunch from the mountain’s gorgeous summit. You’ll learn the ways tuna is prepared for the popular Kaiten-Zushi style, where sushi is dispensed along a conveyor belt. Don’t miss the Hakodate Morning Market, where vendors sell their wares as well as fresh vegetables and fish.

For a glimpse into Tokyo’s vibrant natural landscape, venture to Onuma National Park for a half day. You’ll enjoy a scenic ride to the park followed by a tour of the park’s dormant volcano, Mount Komagatake, where views of Mount Fuji fill the background. Your guide will patiently take you through this paradise of lakes and diverse plant life unlike anywhere else in the world. It’s one of the Tokyo shore excursions guaranteed to please nature lovers.

Whether you’re ready to scale Japan’s mountains or walk through spiritual, sacred sites, cruises from Tokyo effortlessly provide a mix of natural and urban attractions. Plus, you can’t come to Japan without immersing yourself in the culture. Opportunities to try traditional sushi or see an authentic Tokyo geisha performance are waiting for you around every corner.

7 amazing cruise itineraries to book in 2024

I don't know about you, but each year, as the weather turns cold, I start daydreaming about getting out of Dodge — or, in my case, Pennsylvania. My mind wanders to cruises that will take me to places where the temperature is warmer, but I also take a hard look at the (exceptionally lengthy) list of places I'm longing to visit.

After digging through what's new for 2024, I've come up with a shortlist of sailings that I think are noteworthy. They range from a standard Bahamas voyage with a new twist and an extended Alaska sailing that includes a foray across the Arctic Circle to more far-flung destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.

Dream on, dear reader, and add these to your list of 2024 cruise itineraries.

Note: All prices listed are per person, based on double occupancy, unless otherwise noted. Fares do not include taxes and fees.

Seabourn's 'Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas' itinerary

Last year, the Australia and New Zealand cruise region gained momentum following the pandemic shutdown. In 2024, the hardly populated Australia region of The Kimberley is gaining popularity. Luxury cruise brand Seabourn will be offering a series of six 10-night voyages between Broome and Darwin on expedition vessel Seabourn Pursuit during what will be early winter in the southern hemisphere.

The line's " Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas " will take passengers to places along the coast few passengers are able to visit to see the stunning teal waters and horizontal waterfalls of Talbot Bay, sample wines in the Hunter River Region and check out nature preserves in Wyndham.

Details: The first sailing, from Darwin to Broome, embarks on June 12. The final voyage, from Broome to Darwin, departs on Aug. 1. Prices start from $6,134 per person ($613 per person, per night), double occupancy, for the July 2 cruise. All accommodations are suites with balconies.

Celebrity's 'Best of Japan' and 'Vietnam and Thailand' cruises

The number of voyages in Asia was trending upward notably prior to 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought cruising in the region to an extended halt. And it's once again on the rise. Following that curve, Celebrity Cruises will be running new 11- to 13-night Asia sailings in 2024 on two ships — Celebrity Millennium and Celebrity Solstice — that bring stops in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thailand.

What's notable about the offerings is that they will aim to immerse passengers further into the destinations by including overnights in a total of 11 ports across all itineraries. That means more time to explore Hanoi's Old Quarter as the sun sets, indulge in nighttime gastronomy in Hong Kong, visit one of Bangkok's many markets, or learn why Osaka is known for street food.

Details: Celebrity Millennium's " Best of Japan " cruises run from early mid-March to early October. At press time, the least expensive fares — for a 12-night sailing — start from $1,330 per person ($111 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. It travels round-trip from Yokohama and visits Hiroshima, Pusan and other ports, including Osaka, where the ship will overnight.

Celerbrity Solstice's Vietnam and Thailand cruises kick off in mid-January and run through March. The ship will resume them again in the fall of 2024 and run through the winter season. Prices start from $1,255 per person ($105 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. The voyage sails from Hong Kong to Singapore with stops in Da Nang and Koh Samui, plus overnights in Hanoi and Bangkok.

SeaDream's 'Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles' sailing

Here's one to put on your radar if you're looking to book — but not necessarily sail — in 2024. It's a new Mediterranean itinerary that doesn't start up for nearly three more years, in 2026. The SeaDream routing brings stops at seven ports that are rarely visited by cruise passengers. During the seven-night voyages, there will be calls at Primosten, Croatia; Cesme, Turkey; Cetubal, Portugal; and Kythira, Kythnos, Syvota and Tinos, Greece — making these sailings unique and well-suited to anyone who loves the region but who's looking for new places to experience.

SeaDream's small ships, each of which carries just 112 people, are able to reach locales about which passengers on megaships can only fantasize. Couple that with excellent service, and you'll be visiting the Our Lady of Loretto statue in Primosten, touring the Cesme Castle and lounging on stunning Greek beaches from a home base that puts you squarely in the lap of luxury.

Details: An itinerary that includes three of the seven new ports is the 11-night " Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles " itinerary from Venice, Italy, to Athens, Greece, departing on Aug. 8, 2026, on SeaDream I. Prices start from $10,399 per person ($946 per person, per night) for a room with a porthole view.

Holland America's 'Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice' Legendary Voyage

Alaska is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys the vastness of untouched wilderness, the wildlife it houses and adventurous pursuits it provides. (Think whale-watching, hiking on glaciers and salmon fishing.) However, Holland America 's Westerdam is hosting a 28-day sailing that's anything but your standard cruise to the Last Frontier .

Passengers will visit the usual Alaska ports, such as Ketchikan, Sitka and Juneau, with scenic sailing through the Inside Passage, past Hubbard Glacier and to Glacier Bay. But they can also expect less-common stops at places like Nome, Kodiak, Anchorage (with an overnight) and Homer. Plus, about halfway through, this cruise crosses the Arctic Circle — a rite of passage for many travelers.

Details: Holland America's 28-day " Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice " cruise — one of the line's Legendary Voyages, known for longer durations and a unique mix of port calls — sails June 9-July 7, round-trip from Seattle. Inside cabins start from $5,299 per person (about $189 per person, per night).

Silversea's summertime French Polynesia cruises

Another consideration for future travel is Silversea Cruises , which is featuring its first full-summer season in French Polynesia in 2026. Silver Whisper will offer two immersive itineraries, including overnights, across 17 voyages between April and September.

Passengers can choose seven-night sailings that visit idyllic favorites like Tahiti, Moorea and Huahine and which also include overnights in Bora Bora. Or, they can cruise for twice as long by selecting a 14-night voyage that calls on the same ports as the seven-night option but with Fakarava, Nuku Hiva, Fatu Hiva, Atuona and Tahuata added.

Details: Silversea's seven-night voyages begin April 6, 2026, and start from $5,650 per person ($808 per person, per night) for an ocean-view cabin.

The line's 14-night sailings start on April 20, 2026. Fares start from $10,450 per person ($747 per person, per night) for ocean-view accommodations.

New Bermuda voyages on Carnival Venezia

Beginning in May of 2025, Carnival Cruise Line 's Carnival Venezia will sail a series of eight four- and five-night cruises to Bermuda from New York. These itineraries are notable because the line is aiming to increase its presence there but also because the style of the ship is new to even most of the brand's most dedicated passengers.

In 2022, Carnival announced its Costa by Carnival concept after revealing it would be transferring ships from its Costa sister brand to the Carnival fleet. Now, when travelers visit the Gibb's Hill Lighthouse or check out the island's renowned pink-sand beaches during a sailing on Carnival Venezia, they can enjoy both the Italian style of the ship and Carnival's fun atmosphere and high service standards.

Details: Voyages kick off on May 22, 2025. Prices start from $429 per person ($108 per person, per night) for an inside cabin on a four-night cruise departing Sept. 18, 2025.

Disney Cruise Line's Lighthouse Point itineraries

Disney Cruise Line 's new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , a private destination on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, is set to open in June with a three-night preview sailing on June 6 aboard Disney Magic. Following the initial voyage, the line will run regular three- to seven-night voyages to Lighthouse Point on Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

The island will feature a dedicated family beach and water play area, an arts and culture pavilion focused on Bahamian culture, 20 family cabanas, an adults-only beach and a selection of shore excursion options.

Details: Prices for itineraries that include Lighthouse Point start from $624 per person ($208 per person, per night) for a three-night cruise on Disney Magic. The cruise departs Nov. 5 and sails from Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks coasted to the close of another winning week on Friday.

The S&P 500 rose 8.60 points, or 0.2%, to 5,222.68 to finish a third straight winning week following its mostly miserable April. It had been on pace for a bigger gain in the morning, but that mostly disappeared following a discouraging report on U.S. consumer sentiment .

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 125.08 points, or 0.3%, to 39,512.84, and the Nasdaq composite edged down by 5.40, or less than 0.1%, to 16,340.87.

The S&P 500 has climbed back within 0.6% of its record on revived hopes that the Federal Reserve may deliver cuts to interest rates this year. A flood of stronger-than-expected reports on profits from big U.S. companies has also helped support the market.

AP business correspondent Seth Sutel reports.

Gen Digital jumped 15.3% after reporting better profit for the first three months of 2024 than analysts expected. The cyber safety company, whose brands include Norton and LifeLock, also authorized a program to buy back up to $3 billion of its stock. It joined a lengthening list of companies announcing big such programs, which helps goose per-share earnings for investors.

Novavax nearly doubled and shot 98.7% higher after announcing a deal with Sanofi that could be worth more than $1.2 billion. The agreement includes a license to co-commercialize Novavax’s COVID-19 vaccine worldwide, with some exceptions. Novavax also reported a slightly smaller loss for the latest quarter than analysts expected.

They helped offset a drop of 11% for Akamai Technologies, which topped expectations for profit but fell short for revenue. The cloud-computing, security and content delivery company also gave some financial forecasts for the upcoming year that fell short of analysts’ expectations.

It said the strengthening of the U.S. dollar’s value against other currencies is slicing into its business, along with slowing traffic growth across the industry. That helped overshadow its own announcement of a program to buy back up to $2 billion of its stock.

In the bond market, Treasury yields rose following the discouraging preliminary report from the University of Michigan.

It suggested sentiment among U.S. consumers is weakening by much more than economists expected, and the drop was large enough to be “statistically significant and brings sentiment to its lowest reading in about six months,” according to Joanne Hsu, director of the survey of consumers.

Potentially even more discouraging is that U.S. consumers were forecasting inflation of 3.5% in the upcoming year, up from their forecast of 3.2% a month earlier. If such expectations spiral higher, the fear is that it could lead to a vicious cycle that worsens inflation.

It highlights how some companies have recently been describing increasing struggles among their customers, particularly their lower-income ones .

The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.50% from 4.46% late Thursday. But the movement was still relatively modest compared with its drop from 4.70% late last month.

Markets may remain on hold until Wednesday’s highly anticipated update on U.S. inflation at the consumer level, according to rates strategists at Bank of America. Traders are still largely penciling in one or two cuts to interest rates by the Federal Reserve this year, according to data from CME Group.

“Right now, the market is in a good mood thanks to a decent earnings season and a Fed that has a high bar to hiking,” according to Brian Jacobsen, chief economist at Annex Wealth Management. “That mood can change quickly.”

Last week, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell helped pull yields lower after saying the central bank remains closer to cutting its main interest rate than hiking it, despite a string of stubbornly high readings on inflation this year. The Fed has been keeping its main interest rate at the highest level in more than two decades in hopes of getting high inflation fully under control.

A cooler-than-expected jobs report at the end of last week, meanwhile, suggested the U.S. economy could pull off the tricky balancing act of staying solid enough to avoid a bad recession but not so strong that it worsens inflation.

In stock markets abroad, London’s FTSE 100 rose 0.6% after the government reported the U.K. economy bounced back to growth at the start of the year. The performance was better than expected, and it snapped two straight quarters where the economy shrank.

In Japan, Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.4% after a report showed strong auto exports whittled down the nation’s trade deficit and it racked up solid returns on overseas investments.
