Planning to visit a cenote near Playa del Carmen? Cenote Azul is one of the most beautiful and one of the closest, and in this post, I will tell you all about it.

Thousands of cenotes are scattered across Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Formerly regarded by the ancient Mayans as sacred wells they are now hotspots for tourists, adventurers, and explorers alike.

The open Cenote Azul (Blue Cenote in Spanish) is located on the Riviera Maya in the Yucatan Peninsula’s southernmost region, only 30 minutes south of Playa del Carmen right after Puerto Aventuras, and 40 minutes north of Tulum.

In fact, make sure you don’t confuse Cenote Azul near Playa del Carmen with Cenote Azul in Bacalar , which I will tell you more about in another post.

They are both located in the Mexican State of Quintana Roo, but very far apart and very different.

As one of the region’s well-known and most visited Mexican cenotes , the cenote Azul offers the perfect place where to swim in crystal clear waters of the cenote’s pools, relax in a large open space with chairs and tables, or lay on the wooden decks.

What are the Cenotes?

I am sure should know by now what is a cenote but for those who don’t or have never seen one yet, I would like to offer a brief overview of what they are.

Cenotes are natural sinkholes that date back hundreds of years. When limestone caves collapse, a natural pool emerges. This pool is filled with rainwater and water flowing through underground rivers connected to these sinkholes.

There are 4 types of cenotes, namely:

• open cenotes such as Cenote Corazon , Casa Cenote , or Kaan Luum
• semi-open cenotes such as Cenote Dos Ojos or Grand Cenote
• cave cenotes such as Taak Bi-ha or Cenote The Pit

In Mayan culture, cenotes were considered sacred (and still are in some way). Mayans would give offerings to the gods in these locations.

In the depths of some cenotes, Mayan artifacts can still be uncovered. Cenotes are now among the Yucatan Peninsula’s most popular tourist destinations.

FUN FACT – Although you may see these kinds of rock formations in other parts of the world, only in Mexico they are called cenotes.

It’s a Yucatan Mayan word  ts’ono’ot  ( dzonot ) which means “ well with water ”.

When the Spaniards came to invade Mexico they misspelled the Mayan word and created the word “Cenote”.

Cenote Azul at a glance

The cenote Azul is one of the best places where to spend a full day in total relaxation, swimming jumping, snorkeling or just laying by the pristine water.

It offers a great alternative option when the Caribbean coast is infested by the smelly Sargasso.

the Cenote Azul is easily accessible by car, bus, or taxi, as it is situated on the main highway Carretera Federal that’s between Tulum and Playa del Carmen.

So although I would always suggest a rental car, you don’t actually need it to visit this Cenote, because it’s located right on the highway where local busses can drop you off on the side of the road.

The cenote is made of a big main pool and many other smaller pools with shallow areas.

In the area where the deeper pool is the most adventurous will enjoy diving into the cenote clear emerald waters from the jumping platform.

The smaller pools on the opposite side of the beautiful Cenote Azul have a shallow depth and are more suitable for kids. It is in fact a family-friendly cenote and during the weekend you will find many local families visiting.

What you should know about Cenote Azul, Playa del Carmen Riviera Maya

There are many unique characteristics of Cenote Azul , with the following being what you should know:

✔️ Cenote Azul is easily accessible via public transportation as the entrance is located on the main road.

✔️ This area is kids-friendly due to its shallow waters and is easily accessible.

✔️ If you’re adventurous, Cenote Azul is also perfect for you! You can jump safely into 6 meters of water from a 3,5-meter high platform.

✔️ Cenote Azul was named after its crystal clear blue water. In Spanish, Azul means blue.

How To get to Cenote Azul

Cenote Azul is located about 25 minutes (30km)away from Playa del Carmen, and Tulum is only 40 km away. It’s situated near Cenote Cristalino and only a few short minutes from the magnificent Taak-Bi-Ha , a cave cenote.

Cenote Azul can be reached in a variety of ways, such as by car, bus, or taxi or sometimes you can find private tours as well.

Getting to Cenote Azul by car

One of the best and most convenient ways to go to the Yucatan Peninsula is to rent a car.

Without the hassle of packed buses and inconsistent schedules, you can explore the surrounding areas at your leisure.

When renting a car , we recommend you get full insurance with zero deductible for your peace of mind.

Even though traveling throughout the Yucatan Peninsula is easy, anything can happen, and you want to be prepared for the unexpected.

Now that you know how to get a car rental, you may be wondering how to reach Cenote Azul by car. The ride is easy, and anyone who gets confused by directions will easily find their way safely!

From Playa del Carmen, take the Carretera Federal (federal highway) to Tulum and exit at the Cenote Azul sign.

You must stop and pay an entry fee at the ticket office before making your way to the parking lot.

Keep in mind that you cannot pay by credit card. And if you are driving you should keep a couple of thousand pesos in cash with you, just in case.

There is a large parking lot at the back of the complex where you can leave your car.

Taking the bus to Cenote Azul

The Cenote Azul is easily accessible from Playa del Carmen and Tulum if you travel by “Colectivo” (minivans) to Cenote Azul ‘s entrance. Just tell the driver where to drop you off.

Colectivos are shared vans that run between all of Yucatan’s famous tourist destinations. They are frequent, inexpensive, and convenient.

Because the cenote is near the entrance, you won’t have to walk far.

Keep in mind that the ADO bus to Tulum doesn’t stop along the way and the driver won’t be able to drop you off on the side of the road as the small colectivo busses would do.

Getting to Cenote Azul by taxi

Another option is to hire a taxi. Unfortunately, rates change regularly and differ between each taxi driver. To ensure you get a taxi driver you can trust, ask your hotel’s reception for recommendations.

You must settle on a rate before the taxi arrives and arrange for the taxi driver to fetch you again later when you’re done exploring, as there aren’t any taxis available at the location.

Things to do in the Cenote Azul – Playa del Carmen

Cenote Azul is for the adventurous and those looking for a place to relax. Cenote Azul is a large cenote with a natural platform and some artificial ones that create different areas within the cenote and separate the deeper parts from the shallower ones.

A lovely trail winds its way around the cenote, providing breathtaking scenery. You will also find a few different recreational areas scattered around a lush greenery for public use.

There are several activities for you to enjoy while exploring Cenote Azul :

✅ Snorkel – The water in the cenote is crystal clear, making it perfect for exploring what lies beneath the rock formations, including fish of various sizes. You can either rent snorkeling equipment or bring your own.

✅ Relax and swim – Cenote Azul is the ideal location to unwind and have a wonderful, relaxing day. You can spend your time relaxing on one of the many benchesalong the banks or take a dip in the refreshing, cool water of the large turquoise pools.

✅ Picnic – Food can be brought onto the premises. There is also a store for you to buy snacks and right in front of it, overlooking the cenote there is a lovely terrace with chairs and a table where you can have your meal surrounded by a thriving nature. Just remember alcohol is not permitted.

✅ Cliff jumping – You can jump into and out of the cenote from a 3.5-meter (10.5-foot) high cliff as well as smaller ones. Diving headfirst is safe because it is only 6 meters (18 feet) deep.

✅ Take stunning photos – The area provides breathtaking views from which to shoot stunning photos. Wedding photographers are regularly seen using the backdrop for wedding pictures! Stroll around and discover your favorite viewpoint, and you will find that every photo will be breathtaking.

✅ Fish spa – All cenotes have tiny fish that will exfoliate your feet. Simply dip your bare feet into the water and enjoy your natural fish spa! I don’t like when they capture those tiny creatures to sell spa treatments, but here they are in their natural environment so there is no harm to them.

✅ Local wildlife spotting – While exploring this majestic cenote, you will find iguanas, and see and hear many local species of birds.

How to explore Cenote Azul while remaining environmentally conscious

Protecting the environment and helping preserve it should be the main priority of every traveler. It’s effortless protecting our planet and its many incredible wonders, and we should all participate in this endeavor.

By respecting the environment, we learn to appreciate it more.

The following are a few small ways in which you can make a difference in preserving our environment and having a positive impact on our beautiful planet:

► Before entering a cenote, always shower

► Even if they are labeled “eco-friendly,” do not apply creams, protectors, or sprays on your skin because they will contaminate the water. wear them after you finish swimming

What to bring to Cenote Azul

When visiting Cenote Azul , there are a few items you should not forget to bring with you.

• Towel to dry off
• Biodegradable sunscreen to avoid sunburn (regular sunscreen is not permitted)
• Change of clothes
• Swimsuit ( I love Cupshe , the swimsuits are affordable and of great quality)
• Water shoes (or any closed shoes) to avoid hurting your feet on the rocks and to avoid bug bites
• When you get out of the water, use DEET-free mosquito repellent because there might be a lot of mosquitos in the area
• There are life jackets, snorkel gear, and marks that can be rented. However, to save money and for hygienic reasons, it’s better to bring your snorkeling gear .
• Waterproof camera or GoPro to take fun pictures in and around the water.
• Waterproof phone case

🔴 Cenote Azul can get quite crowded, particularly on weekends. If you want to avoid the crowds, skip weekends and arrive when they open in the morning.

Photographing the Cenote Azul

The Cenote Azul is beautiful to photograph no matter what time of day it is. But, if you want to bring your inner photographer out and take breathtaking images, then the early morning when nature is coming alive or afternoon, when the sun is not directly overhead, is ideal.

Although most people prefer to take photos in the morning to avoid the scorching sun, you can rely on the dense green vegetation to provide you with shade throughout the day.

This enables you to locate the ideal location for a stunning photograph.

There are several other attractions near Cenote Azul for you to enjoy, including the spectacular beaches of the Riviera Maya , Xpu-ha Beach (1.9 miles / 3.2 km), and Akumal Beach (8.6 miles / 14 km).

Cenote Azul – Playa del Carmen – final thoughts

As you can see there are plenty of reasons why you should visit Cenote Azul , among which are the beauty of the cenote but also the closeness to many other Mexico natural wonders .

And that is why I recommend renting a car , even if it was just for the day so that you can be free to move around at your own pace and visit several sites on the same day.

Driving in Mexico is easier than you think, especially in the Yucatan Peninsula.

🚰 Can I Drink Tap Water in Mexico?

No, you can’t! Maybe in some areas or in some homes where they have installed water filters but to be on the safe side, I would say, never drink tap water in Mexico. Carry a water bottle with you and fill it up where you find available potable water sources. Most of the hotels have those.

🚗 Is It Safe to Drive in Mexico?

The short answer is: depending on where you are. Although in general if you stick to the main roads and don’t drive at night you should probably be safe. In lesser tourist areas you should probably check the local news to stay up to date. Driving in the Yucatan Peninsula is easy everywhere, even at night, although I would still avoid it. It will probably work, especially if you have a European or US phone, but your roaming rates may be to the stars (check with your SIM provider). Even if have an affordable international rate, you will be much better off by buying a Mexican SIM Card . It’s cheap, easy to set up, and it will keep you connected with your friends, family, and, more important, google Maps so you will never get lost!

The short answer is, yes it is. However, there are parts of Mexico that are indeed troubled and you should avoid for now, and others that are super safe and easy to travel around.

Where is Cenote Azul located? This post covers how to visit Cenote Azul in Playa del Carmen and how to make the most of your visit—all in one post! Read on before visiting.

The cenote Azul is a beautiful open cenote situated on the Riviera Maya in the South of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is one of the most popular cenotes in the region because of its spacious areas where to relax by the soothing waters surrounded by lush tropical vegetation.

The cenote Azul also offers all the necessary facilities to make your day even more enjoyable, including lockers, a snack bar,  benches by the water, and a platform to jump, for the more adventurous.

Located on the main road (Carretera federal) that connects Playa del Carmen with Tulum, Cenote Azul is easily reachable either by bus or car.

Things to know about Cenote Azul

• The entrance of this cenote is right on the main road which makes it very easy to reach by public transportation

What are the cenotes ?

A cenote is a freshwater sinkhole formed by the collapsing of limestone soil, the type of stone that the Yucatan Peninsula is mainly made of. The cenotes allow us access to the water table. These holes are produced naturally by the collapse of the roof.

How to get to Cenote Azul

Located at only 25 km from Playa del Carmen and 40 km from Tulum, close to Cenote Cristalino and at a few minutes away from the spectacular cave cenote Taak-Bi-ha you can choose among different ways to get to Cenote Azul. Here below we’ll tell you all about each of them. 

How to get to Cenote Azul by Car 

We believe that renting a car in the Yucatan peninsula is always a good choice because it gives you the freedom to move around and visit more places in one day at your pace without having to depend on crowded busses with unreliable schedules.

Driving in the Yucatan Peninsula is very easy but we would recommend including full insurance with 0 deductible when you rent a car, for your peace of mind.

So how to get to cenote Azul by ca r? Easy! You will have to get on the Carretera Federal (Federal HIghway) Playa del Carmen – Tulum and stop by the sign Cenote Azul. You will find a drive-through at the entrance where you will have to stop to pay for your entrance and then continue to drive up to the spacious car park. 

How to get to Cenote Azul by local Bus 

If you prefer to travel by local busses, whether you are in Tulum or Cancun, it’s very easy to get to the Cenote Azul by local bus, both from Playa del Carmen or Tulum . You can get on a “ colectivo ” and let them drop you off at the entrance of Cenote Azul.

There you just walk by the entrance where you would purchase your tickets and get directions on where to continue on foot.  The cenote is very close to the entrance so there is not much walking to do. 

How to get to Cenote Azul by taxi

Hiring a Taxi could be another option. We can’t give you rates because they may change and, besides every taxi driver may have their own.  However, we suggest you should ask a recommended and trustworthy taxi driver from the reception of your hotel or your host. 

Also, make sure you agree on the rate before getting in the taxi and arrange when he would pick you up as there are no taxis on site. 

Things to do in the Cenote Azul

Cenote Azul is quite large and its made of different small areas separated by natural or man-made platforms. Also, there is a beautiful trail that runs around the cenote where you can enjoy incredible views.

So, here are all the things you can do in Cenote Azul.

✅ Swim and chill – you can just enjoy swimming or floating in the cool waters while or relax by the benches scattered around the banks.

✅ Snorkel – this cenote is very good for snorkeling and exploring what’s underneath the rock formations. 

✅ Take amazing photos – Cenote Azul offers spectacular angles from where to take incredible pictures. In fact, it has been used very often as a setting for wedding photography.  I would suggest you walk around and find your favorite angle. 

✅ Take a jump – there is a 3.5mt (10.5 ft) high platform and other lower ones where you can enjoy jumping in and out of the cenote. It’s safe to dive headfirst as well since the water is 6 mt (18ft) deep so there is no danger.

Protecting the beautiful nature we live in is our main concern and an aspect of traveling that is so dear to us.

Besides, if we want to continue to enjoy the incredible natural wonders on this earth, it is very important that we respect the environment and help preserve it.

The good part is that it’s not that difficult. Here we are sharing some simple rules to follow so that we may make as little impact as possible on this earth. 

• Bring trash with you
• Don’t be loud
• Don’t use any kinds of cream spray or protectors on your skin as it would contaminate the environment (even the so-called – eco friendly) 
• Always take a shower before entering a cenote 
• Don’t hang on trees
• Just don’t do any silliness that can damage the environment

Tips to photograph the cenote Cenote Azul

Any time of day is good to photograph the cenote, although it’s better early morning or in the afternoon when the sunlight is not vertical. Although early morning photography is ideal, In any case, thanks to the lush vegetation, offering shade, you will always be able to find a good spot for a great photo.

Why are cenotes blue?

There are different factors that determine the color of the water of the seas, lagoons, rivers, cenotes… The most important are depth, the color of the bottom, salinity, temperature, geographical location, incidence of the angle of the sun when the rays penetrate the water.

A basic factor in determining color is the transparency of the water, which occurs when the water contains floating particles or few organisms.

The most intense blue occurs in crystal clear waters, where it reaches its highest purity.

The organisms reduce the penetration of light into the water, turning the water greener.

In the case of the cenotes, we also have to add the minerals from the limestone rock, which help to dye the cenotes an intense turquoise/blue.

In the cenote Azul there are undoubtedly the ideal factors for that intense blue color

How much is a taxi from Playa del Carmen to Cenote Azul?

It should be around 600 to 700 pesos. But you should always agree on the fare before confirming the service. If it’s more than 700 it’s a rip-off and we would ask another driver.

Do you pay for cenotes?

The majority of the cenotes, especially the ones on the Riviera Maya have an entrance fee that goes towards the workers’ wages and maintenance works. But of you explore around the Yucatan Peninsula you will have more chance to bump into a free cenote in the middle of nowhere.

Can you get sick from cenotes?

We don’t know of any cases of sickness from cenote swimming. However, make sure you don’t drink alcohol before jumping in the water or you don’t eat too heavily. As your body could have an unpleasant reaction to the cold water.

What should I wear to the cenotes?

Swimsuit, a rash guard so that you don’t get sunburnt and you may want to wear some water shoes for your comfort.

Can you drown in a cenote?

In the majority of the cenotes, it’s safe to swim and it’s not likely to get currents that pull you down. The deepest ones, such as Kaan Luum for example, it’s not allowed to swim for that very reason.

In any case, if you are not a good swimmer or you don’t feel comfortable you should wear a life jacket.

Are there snakes in cenotes?

Well, not exactly in the cenote, but since cenotes are normally located in the jungle surrounded by thick vegetation there could be snakes hiding around. The chances that they come out are very low because they don’t like humans.

Cenote Azul: What you Need to Know

Tip: Arrive early to beat the crowds (and tour buses)!

Cenote Azul is one of the most popular cenotes in Riviera Maya , Mexico due to its proximity to both Playa del Carmen and Tulum. It is located in Riviera Maya, directly on the main road. Cenote Azul is known for it’s beautiful, bright turquoise color, with its name translating to “blue cenote”. The large turquoise pools are perfect for swimming and hang out in the sun. Plus, the water is crystal clear and super refreshing! Before we dive too deep into the nitty gritty details, I want to clarify that this cenote is not to be mistaken with Cenote Azul in Bacalar, although I’ve heard that that one is beautiful as well!  

Located just south of Puerto Aventuras, you can get to Cenote Azul from Playa del Carmen in approximately 20 minutes by car. If you are coming from Tulum Pueblo, you should expect to travel about 45 minutes. 

What are Cenotes?

The first question you probably have is what the heck are cenotes? If you’ve traveled to Mexico before, you’re probably familiar with cenotes at this point and can skip ahead to the next paragraph. If not, keep reading! Cenotes ( pronounced sei-now-tay) are sinkholes that were created by the ceiling of caves collapsing. This results in sinkholes that hold salt-free water, making them great areas of swimming, diving, and scoping out the wildlife. Seriously, these cenotes are some underground magic. The water in any of these cenotes tend to me quite cold, but often a refreshing break from Mexico’s heat. There are actually three different types of cenotes. There are covered cenotes , open air cenotes , and a mix of the two. Cenote Azul is an open air cenote, with a number of different pools to explore.

Cenotes are extremely popular in Yucatan, and throughout Riviera Maya. I think it would be impossible to visit the region with hearing about these water pools, and they are definitely something that should be on any Tulum itinerary .

The Yucatan peninsula is full of thousands of cenotes to explore, so you’ll want to narrow down your list of must-visit cenotes. Here are a few of my favorite cenotes near Tulum and Playa del Carmen:

• Gran Cenote – just 10 minutes from Tulum and the most “insta-famous” of the cenotes near Tulum
• Cenote Choo-Ha – located near Coba, this is a great cenote to combine with a day trip to the famous Mayan ruins
• Cenote Oxman – a bit further than the other cenotes, Cenote Oxman is located near Valladolid. However, if you have the time I absolutely recommend a visit to this magical spot

What To Expect at Cenote Azul

When you first arrive at Cenote Azul you’ll pass the ticket booth, were you can purchase your ticket and any rentals with cash – MXN pesos or US dollars. You’ll be instructed to head to the showers to rinse off before continuing on to the cenotes. You’ll then walk through a beautiful jungle area, passing two small cenotes on either side. While these aren’t as big for swimming, they are perfect for a quick photo and don’t get super crowded.

Cenote Azul is known for its large swimming area, which makes it possible to spend hours swimming under the sun. There are both deep and shallow areas where you can actually see the ground. Be careful though, as many of the rocks are covered in moss and can be quite slippery. You’ll find two platforms to jump from, including a cliff jumping spot of about 15 feet for the more adventurous type. I personally stuck with the platform, which was only a few feet from the water.

Best Cenotes near Tulum, Mexico

Cenote Azul is located right next to a number of other cenotes including Cenote Cristalino, Kantunchi and Jardin of Eden. You can easily combine a visit with these cenotes, but you’ll need to pay the entrance fee at each of these.

If you stand still in the water for a few moments, you may notice small nibbles around your feet. Nothing to be worried about! The fish are known to bite at any dead skin on your feet, a spa practice that is quite common in Asia. At one point there were around 15 fish nibbling at each of my feet! The small shop actually sells food specifically to feed to the fish, but I think they had quite the feast on my toes!

Cenote Azul Hours

It is open daily from 8:30AM-5:30PM. Since cenote Azul is a popular spot on many of the tours coming from Playa del Carmen and the resorts in Riviera Maya, I highly recommend arriving early to avoid the crowds. That said, it’s a large cenote so you should be able to find a quiet spot no matter the time of day. We arrived right at 8:30AM and there were already a couple of people there, so it’s possible they’ll even let you in before opening hours.

Cenote Azul: Things to Note

• As with any cenote, you are always required to shower off before entering. Doing so protects the cenote, both the water and ecosystem. Please refrain from putting on any sunscreen or bug spray until after you’ve finished swimming. 
• You’ll find lockers available if you would like to lock up your valuables.
• There is a small spot to grab soft drinks, water, or a snack on-site.
• There are a number of bathrooms throughout the cenote complex. 

How to Get to Cenote Azul? 

Located just on the main road of Carretera Federal, Cenote Azul is super easy to get to. 

If you are renting a car while in Mexico, driving to Cenote Azul is super easy. It is located on Carretera Federal, the main road between Tulum and Playa del Carmen. There is a large parking lot with free parking, so you shouldn’t have any issues if you arrive early.  Rental cars are a great way to get around Quintana Roo if you feel comfortable driving in Mexico.

By Taxi 

If you’re arriving at Cenote Azul by taxi, I recommend either arranging for your driver to wait, or to make sure sure that you have a phone number to call for a pickup. I have heard that later in the day there are often drivers sitting around waiting for pickups, however this was not the case when we visited, so best to be prepared. 

If you plan on having your driver wait for you while you swim and hang out, make sure to arrange a price ahead of time, and pay after you’ve completed your trip. 

Una Vida is a more luxury accommodation option in Tulum town that still offers great rates. Located in the town center, Una Vida has a large pool, minimalist decor, and a great location for exploring the city.

Prices start around $200 USD/night. I recommend booking in advance!

By Collectivo

Because Cenote Azul is located on the main road, you can arrive by colectivo. Colectivos are shared vans that drive back and forth along specific routes. In this case, you will be traveling along the route between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Rides typically cost between 20-40 MXN per person, and can be hailed down on the side of the road if there is space. Just let the driver know that you are going to Cenote Azul, and you will be dropped off right in front. While colectivos lack the comfort of a private taxi, they are a cheap and easy way to get from place to place. 

How Much Does it Cost to Visit Cenote Azul? 

Entry into cenote azul costs 150 MXN pesos for adults and 80 MXN pesos for children ages 4 to 8. Life jackets are not required at Cenote Azul, but you have the option of renting on at the front desk for 40 MXN pesos. You can also rent snorkel gear for an additional 70 MXN pesos.

Only cash is accepted, but you have the option to pay in US dollars as well. It is a relatively cheap activity that can easily be visited without a tour, so it is perfect for visiting Tulum on a Budget.

Blue Cenote ( Cenote azul )

Blue Cenote or Cenote Azul is one of the most popular cenotes in the Riviera Maya , Cancun and the Yucatan Peninsula.

Its location between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, its turquoise blue waters, the amount of shallow areas, being an open type cenote and its facilities, make it one of the must visit cenotes.

Attractions and activities at Cenote Azul

Just as you enter the cenote facilities you will find the first two pools , these have a shallow depth, are shaded and have fewer tourists, although the water may be colder.

Continuing on you can reach the main swimming area, a natural open-air pool that is divided into two areas: a deep area and a shallower area. This is the most popular pool in the cenote.

Cenote Azul is one of the largest in the Riviera Maya and allows for a wide range of water activities:

• Relax and have a good time. As simple as being in one of the shallower areas of the cenote, choose a spot and enjoy the water and have fun with your friends and family.
• Swimming. In the main area you can swim; if you are not a good swimmer you can rent a life jacket or stay in the shallower areas.
• Snorkeling. Use your own equipment or rent it and enjoy the crystal clear waters of the cenote and even better, enjoy swimming with fish of different types and sizes. It’s worth it.
• Dives. If you like adrenaline: In the deepest area of the cenote there is a natural platform from where you can jump into the water in your best diving position. The jump is approximately 4 meters high.
• Picnik. You are allowed to bring food and there is a small store inside. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed.
• Feed the fish. Inside the park you can buy fish food and watch as these little animals swirl around your feet.
• Visit more cenotes. Being so close to other cenotes, you can take a mini cenotes tour . Nearby cenotes include Cristalino, Kantunchi and Jardin del Eden.
• Scuba diving. It is possible to dive to the depths of the cenote in routes for beginners or advanced divers.
• Local wildlife spotting. In addition to the rich bottom of the cenote, also see and hear many local birds, iguanas and if you look for them, even bats in the small cave.

How to get to Cenote Azul?

By public transportation it is possible to get there using the collectivo between Playa del Carmen and Tulum and asking to get off at the Barcelo hotel or directly mentioning the name of the cenote. The cost of the collectivo is approximately $1.5 USD or $30 Mexican pesos.

It is feasible but a little more expensive to make the trip by taxi from Playa del Carmen or from Tulum. Prices vary by season but it is advisable to budget with more than one cab driver before taking the trip.

It is easy to get there by own or rented car and it is cost-effective if you are in a group of several people.

How much is the entrance fee to Cenote Azul?

The general admission fee is $120 Mexican pesos ($6 USD), $100 pesos for Quintana Roo residents and $80 pesos ($4 USD) for children 4 to 8 years old.
