When is the best time to visit The Florida Keys?

The answer to this question is somewhat of a challenge, mainly because it depends so much on what makes a good holiday for you.

The best month to visit the keys really is a personal choice that depends on your budget, what you want to do, your tolerance to heat, and whether you prefer things to be quieter or busier.

From November through February the temperatures are not too hot but everything is busier. March through May things are a little hotter and there are a lot of festivals to enjoy.

June through October tend to be the cheapest time to visit the Florida keys but it is very hot. It’s also a little quieter this time too. September and October are also hurricane season in the keys so you need to be more vigilant of the weather.

As you can see the best time to vacation in the Florida Keys is really dependent on the type of holiday you want.

High And Low Season For Key West And The Keys

The high season in the Florida Keys tends to be from Christmas through to mid-April. Christmas in the Florida Keys really is a treat and lots of people go to spend the festive season there. The temperatures are very warm and tolerable at this time of the year but it is much more expensive. It’s also much busier.

The low season in the Keys runs from June to November. During these times the temperatures can become so hot and it’s very humid. If you are looking for a bargain though it’s the summer months you want to visit as hotels can be half the price of the more popular months.

The off-season in Key West allows those on a tighter budget to enjoy these islands without breaking the bank.

If you can tolerate heat well and want a bargain then the summer months are the cheapest time to visit the Florida keys. The average highs are 90°F, 32°C.

Those beautiful Key West Colonial-style hotels do not come cheap and in the summer months, you are likely to pay half of what you would in more popular months. The low season in the Keys is the time you will get the best bargains.

It’s also less crowded and you will find it easier to get restaurant tables, the best seats in cafes, and tickets for attractions like Dry Tortugas are easier to come by.

You will also find you have more daylight hours and the water is really warm almost like a bath. The off-season in Key West is a brilliant time to visit for those who don’t mind being hot and sweaty.

You will find that it’s muggy and thunderstorms are common. Hurricane season in the keys also spans this period with most storms occurring in August and September. It’s rare for the Florida Keys to get hit though.

Visit The Florida Keys In Winter If You:

Most feel that the best time to vacation in the Florida keys is winter. At this time the Keys offer some of the warmest weather in the U.S.A. The weather is an average of 75°F (24°C) and there is a nice breeze making sure you don’t get too hot.

As well as it not being too hot it is also outside hurricane season and there are very few storms or rainy days. You are pretty much guaranteed perfect weather during the winter months. So if you are thinking about when to go to key west this might be the season.

It is consequently more expensive in fact the most expensive time to visit and the busiest. Restaurants are fuller, beaches more packed and attractions often booked out.

However, the crowds only seem to really add to the vibe and many believe it’s the best time to travel to key west to see it at its best.

Winter also tends to be the time when most of the food art and music festivals happen.

Visit Key West In Fall If You:

If you love Halloween then let’s just say nowhere does Halloween like the Florida Keys. Fantasy Fest is a 10-day party for grown-ups. This is the best time to visit The Keys if you are a Halloween junkie.

The festival has been running since 1979 and was started to bring people to the Keys during the quieter months. It takes place at the end of October and it is attended by close to 100,000 people. Each year has a theme and everybody dresses up making the island one big Halloween party.

Before the festival, there is somewhat of a lull in the Keys and it becomes quieter and much more tranquil. Soaking up the autumn sun is as close to bliss as it gets.

Fall also sees the start of the Keys’ Stone Crab Craw season so if you love crab this is the time to visit.

There is a possibility of hurricanes in early fall though so keep that in mind.

Visit The Keys In Spring If You

Many argue that spring is the best time to go to The Florida Keys in particular the best time to travel to Key West. The weather is still good, it’s not hurricane season and it is slightly cheaper.

In the spring you will avoid the stormy weather and the many tourists with the best months being April and May. Temperates are hot but bearable ranging from 72-82°F, 22-28°C in April to 86°F, 30°C in May.

Spring is a perfect time for scuba diving and snorkeling too.

Some of the attractions, local restaurants, and businesses might be closed or have different opening times though so check before you go.

Also note that the Keys, in particular, Key West are a favorite destination for spring breakers so stay away during that time if Spring Break is not your vibe.

These lovely temperatures make it a popular place to see in the New Year and the celebrations are plentiful.

Key West in January is a perfect experience with the island hosting the Key West Food & Wine Festival and the Florida Keys Seafood Festival. There is also the Key Largo and Islamorada Food & Wine Festival. If you love food the Florida Keys in January are right up your street.

Other events include Art Under the Oaks in Tavernier, Coconut Crawl at Key Colony Beach, and the Florida Keys Celtic Festival Marathon.

The Florida Keys In February

February in the Florida Keys is just perfect. The temperature tends to be between 76°F, 24°C, and 66°F 19°C. February is also the month with the lowest rainfall.

The Pigeon Key Art Festival and the Coral Head Music Fest both take place in Marathon. And February in Key West sees the Old Island Days Art Festival.

March in the Florida Keys sees temperatures rise a few degrees with the average high being 78°F, 26°C, and the average low 68°F, 20°C.

These hotter temperatures mean that Key West in Florida becomes a haven for Spring Breakers. The Keys can seem full of college students at this time.

St. Patrick’s Day is always a big deal in March in Key West and the surrounding Keys too. Key Colony Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the St. Patrick’s Day Bar Stroll are notable events.

Other events include Islamorada Seafood Festival and Marathon Seafood Festival.

March is the best time to visit The Florida Keys for a younger crowd.

The Florida Keys In April

The temperatures in April in the Florida Keys start to creep into the 80s. The average high is 81°F, 27°C and the average low is 72°F, 22°C.

Mahi Mahi, Tarpon, Wahoo, Blue Marlin, and Yellowtail all pull those that love fishing to the island. The 7-Mile Bridge Run takes place from Knights Key to Pigeon Key.

Key West in April sees the Conch Republic Independence Celebration. Most believe April is the best time to visit the Florida Keys.

May seems temperatures rise to a high of 85°F, 29°C, and a low of 76°F 24°C. For most people May in the Florida Keys is the perfect time to visit.

Key West in May sees the Cuban American Heritage Festival the Key West Songwriters Festival and the Queen Mother Festival.

The Florida Keys Guitar Festival takes place in Marathon and the Mango Fest in Key West. Key West in June also hosts the Key West Pride Week which is a big deal.

The Florida Keys In July

July is the hottest month in the Keys. Highs are around 89°F,32°C and climbing and it rarely gets below 80°F,27°C. It can feel very muggy and it can rain often, though not for long.

July in Key West is all about its famous pie namesake with the Key Lime Festival. The Hemingway Days Festival also takes place in July. Looe Key Reef Resort is host to the Underwater Music Festival.

4th of July celebrations are happening everywhere with the Spirit of Islamorada 4th of July Festival being the main event. There is so much to see and do in Islamorada so stay a while.

If you love the heat you will be rewarded with fewer crowds and tourists during this time. Remember we are still in hurricane season.

If you love things a little quieter this is the best time to visit the Keys.

The Florida Keys In August

The temperatures in August are the same as in July so both months are hot. It is much more likely to rain in August though so be prepared.

Key West in August is a mecca for lobster fans with the Key West LobsterFest and the Tropical Heat festivals taking place. Marathon is host to Kilts in the Keys which sounds very interesting. There is so much to do in Marathon and it’s a great place to visit.

August in the Florida Keys sees the warmest ocean temperatures making it perfect for swimming and watersports.

The Florida Keys In September

September in the Florida Keys sees the highest rainfall and is the time you are most likely to get a hurricane. The temperate drops a little bringing the average low down to 78°F,26°C so it’s still hot.

The vibe of the Keys tends to change in September with the families leaving and things becoming a little quieter before the winter sun guests arrive. This is the best time to visit the Keys if you want warmer weather but fewer people.

The Florida Keys Birding And Wildlife Festival take place at Big Pine Key. Key West in September hosts Womenfest and the Key West Brew Fest.

The Florida Keys In October

While we are still in hurricane season October sees less rainfall than September. The high temperature drops to 85°F 29°C and the low to 76°F 24°C.

October in Key West is all about Halloween with Fantasy Fest taking up 10 consecutive days. Key West also hosts the Goombay Festival.

Elsewhere the Reef Fest takes place at Key Largo and the Zombie Bike Ride of the Living Dead takes place at Big Pine Key. Big Pine Key and the Lower Keys have so much to offer and are well worth a visit.

October in the Florida Keys is really fun and a great time to visit. You are still in hurricane season though so keep an eye on the weather.

The Florida Keys In November

In November the highs are around 80°F,27°C, and the lows are 72°F 22°C. As the islands get slightly cooler everything tends to slow down and November is quite peaceful and quiet.

Key West in November is home to the Key West Film Festival and the Taste of the Islands takes place in Marathon.

November in the Florida Keys is a perfect time for a romantic getaway as the islands seem to lull a little between the frantic Halloween and Christmas celebration it is wedged between.

The Florida Keys In December

December in the Flordia Keys is quite an experience. It’s the third coldest month and the start of winter. Highs are around 76°F,24°C, and the lows are 67°F,19°C.

Key West in December seems to take on an atmosphere that’s hard to describe. It’s even more cherry and vibrant than it normally is. December in Key West sees the Holiday Parade, and the Key West Lighted Boat Parade two must-see festive events.

Big Pine Key and Lower Keys host the Island Art festival if festival celebrations are not your thing.

December sees the start of the high season so expect to see more crowds and high prices but it’s divine at this time so if you can take a visit.

Key West—the final island in Florida Keys—lies off the tip of Florida and is the southernmost point of the continental United States. It is connected to the mainland via the Overseas Highway, a series of stunning causeways that carry U.S. Route 1 over electric blue water and into the islands.

Key West is only 90 miles from Cuba – but even that 90 miles gives Key West more seasonal variation than the average Caribbean island. You’ll have to pay close attention to Key West weather when booking plane tickets.  

Also, because Key West primarily attracts American tourists, prices rise and fall dramatically based on peak travel seasons.

Key West is the most recognizable of the hundreds of islands in the Florida Keys .  It’s the end point for most road trips through the island chain, and a top family destination.  But when to do? In evaluating the best time to go to Key West, we considered:  

• Hotel availability and rental prices
• Key West weather, including hurricane season
• Seasonal events and festivals
• Potential crowds and
• Activities available for families

So how did we land on March to May as the best months to visit Key West? Here’s the calculus.

While you can certainly enjoy Key West year-round, the winter and summer seasons have some drawbacks.

Wintertime is peak season. From late December through February, accommodations are as costly as they get. Plus, the Keys can get quite cool in December and January, with temperatures dipping into the 60s.

The practical effect of the cool Key West weather? It may be too cold to really enjoy swimming in the ocean or unheated pools. 

On the flip side, there are plenty of festivals and events throughout the winter, all taking advantage of the crowds who have made their way south for warmer weather. See below for some examples.

The summer season offers the cheapest hotel prices.  But with kids out of school and headed to the beach, you may find crowds at family-friendly hotels.  Temperatures will be hot and muggy in July and August, with Florida’s rainy season in full swing.  

Hurricane season in the Caribbean—including Key West—runs from June to November.  While we’re fans of Caribbean off-season travel, even during fall months like October, you should expect plenty of afternoon showers this time of year.  You also face heightened risk of having your trip disrupted by a major storm.  

That leaves the sweet spot: March to May, the best time of year to visit Key West . 

In late March, you’ll get Key West at its best weather. Tourist season is still going strong, especially during spring break weeks, but hotel prices start to drop from the end of February into March.

And as you head into April and May, those prices decrease even further — while the weather keeps getting warmer and better!  That’s the best time to grab a car at the Miami airport, and head south through the Florida Keys.

Where To Stay In Key West With Kids

Key West may not scream “kid-friendly destination” on first glance, but a drive through the Keys, culminating with a few days in Key West, is a road trip every family should take. 

Once you arrive at the end of the United States, there are lots of family-friendly hotels to choos from!

We’ve given you our logic for the ideal time to visit the Florida Keys. But maybe you want to head there a different time of year, or perhaps have limited flexibility. 

Let’s walk through a month-by-month breakdown of weather, prices, crowds, and events in Key West so you’ll know exactly what to expect whenever you decide to go!

Key West in January

January closes out the winter season in Key West. This is the coldest month on the island – the average temps range from a high of 74 degrees to a low of 64 degrees.

If you are traveling to the Florida Keys in January with kids, know that it may be too cold to enjoy the ocean or unheated pools during the winter months. If you and your kids want to enjoy swimming, look for a heated pool when visiting Key West in January.  

Despite the cool weather, January is still the height of peak season for Keys tourists, as the rest of the continental US is far colder. This means accommodation prices are about the highest they get.

But on the bright side, the island is buzzing with holiday fun and annual festivals in January, including: 

• The Southernmost Regatta
• Key West Literary Seminar
• Key West Food & Wine Festival
• The Florida Keys Seafood Festival

Key West in February

Peak tourist season remains in full swing in February, with hotel rates peaking to match. For prices, this may be the worst time to visit Key West.

That said, Key West weather in February is pleasant, with mild temperatures averaging from a high of 76 degrees to a low of 66 degrees. This is also the island’s driest month of the year, with plenty of sunshine and very little rain.

Just like in January, if swimming is at the top of your family itinerary, consider finding accommodations with a heated pool. At 72 degrees, the ocean will be too chilly for anyone not looking for a heart-stopping cold plunge—but there’s so much to see in the Keys beyond the ocean that you can still have a great time.

Key West in March

And now we’re getting into the best time to visit Key West, especially later in March. Average temperatures float around a high of 78 degrees and a low of 68, with low humidity and sunny days. 

In Key West in March, you can break out your favorite swimsuit , load your best beach bag with cold drinks, and settle into a proper beach vacation.

There are also minimal threats of hurricanes or other harsh tropical storms in spring.

March is right on the edge of peak tourist season in Key West, marking the start of the spring shoulder season. Prices start to come down as the snowbird crowds slowly disperse. That said, you won’t get rock bottom prices this month: Between school spring breaks and clear blue skies, you’ll still pay a premium for Key West’s best weather.

Key West in April

  Key West is beautiful in April, with warm weather that’s ideal for beach lounging and swimming. Temperatures range from a high of 81 degrees to a low of 72, and humidity is as low as it gets. The crowds continue to get lighter, while prices continue to creep down.  This might be the perfect time to visit the Florida Keys.

April is also one of the best times to visit the Florida Keys for fun annual events and festivals. Join in the yearly Key West independence festivities at the Conch Republic Independence Celebration , or dance and experience Afro-Caribbean culture at the Afro Roots World Festival .

Key West in May

May is also a great shoulder month in Key West. Temperatures hit their tropical stride, with an average high of 85 degrees and a low of 76 degrees. The warmth, sun, and clear skies are ideal for those who like watersports and beach fun, and some would say May is the best time to travel to Key West.  If you head to Key West in May, you’ll sneak in right before hurricane season and Florida’s rainy season.

May is perhaps the best time to visit the Florida Keys if you want to go  snorkeling with kids , as the ocean feels warm, yet still refreshing. Fans of music will also enjoy the week-long Key West Songwriters Festival , the largest of its kind in the world.

Key West in June

June is the start of low season in Key West, which means hotel and resort prices will see a big drop. It’s one of the most affordable months to visit Key West – making it one of the best times to visit the keys for budget-minded families.

By June, summer has arrived and Key West’s weather is no longer ideal, with temperatures creeping up to an average high of 88 degrees and a low of 79. Humidity is quite high, and the island’s rainy season is well underway.

There will still be plenty of sunny days, however, and Key West Pride is an exciting festival taking place this month. June also is arguably the best month to visit  Dry Tortugas National Park , just off the cost of Key West.

If you don’t mind humidity and afternoon showers, consider a trip to Key West with your kids at the beginning of their school break.

Key West in July

Temperatures continue to climb in July, with an average high of 90 degrees and a low of 81. July is one of the hottest, rainiest, and muggiest months in Florida, and the Florida keys are no exception.

While the weather may not be as enjoyable, July is perhaps the cheapest time to go to Key West. Whatever family beach resort  you’ve had your eye on, it is a great chance to snag a room without the usual sticker shock. It will also be quite easy to book popular tours for your family.  

Ernest Hemingway is among the most notable of Key West’s famous former residents. If your high schoolers are enjoying (or suffering through…) The Old Man and The Sea, then the Hemingway Days  Festival  may help bring the novels to life.  

We spent July 4th in Key West a few years back, and while we remember the energy of Duval Street, we don’t remember rain interfering. So don’t write off the option of a July trip to the Keys. 

What better way to kick-off summer than with the 4th of July Weekend Key Lime Festival ? If you’re super into Key Lime pie, this festival alone might make July your  best time to visit the Florida Keys. 

Key West in August

August is the hottest month in Key West, with average temperatures ranging from an average high of 91 to a low of 81 degrees. The humidity is also quite high, with plenty of rainfall.  For those sensitivy to humidity and weary of rain, August is probably the worst time to visit Key West. 

That said, as a general rule, we don’t shy away from off-season Caribbean travel here at Mango Travel. Despite the risk of rain and the high humidity, we love exploring our favorite destinations in the quieter summer months.

If you’re traveling on a budget and want to avoid droves of crowds, long lines, and restaurant waits, August is your best bet. Enjoy spacious, care-free beach days with your toddlers , cheap accommodations, and easy access to Duval Street nightlife.  No reason to let afternoon showers scare you away.

One exception to these low-key August weeks may be Key West Lobsterfest , where the island kicks off lobster season with a massive party, which draws more crowds.

Protect Your Trip To Key West!

Do not let the rainy season scare you away from Caribbean travel! There’s no reason to shy away from Caribbean travel during the rainy season (July to November). Even if you see storms in the forecast, we’re typically just talking about afternoon rain showers—-a great time for a nap.  

That said, approach your trip with eyes wide open — and with a safety net. Caribbean travel during hurricane season (July to November) always comes with the risk of tropical storms. 

This is the most important time of the year to buy travel insurance, in case your trip gets impacted by a storm and you need to pivot and change destinations or dates.

On top of having comprehensive medical, cancellation, and luggage protection, the hurricane protection that comes with the Travel SE plan is better than most. Key West in September

Key West weather in September is still quite rainy and humid. Temperatures begin to fall, but not by much, with an average high of 89 degrees and a low of 79. The island is still relatively crowd-free – the kids are back in school, after all — and hotel prices are reasonable. While Key West in September is quieter than peak months, it still marks the annual  Key West Brewfest .

Key West in October

October is the start of the fall shoulder season in Key West. Storms abate and rain is less frequent, while temperatures begin to offer a little relief from the summer heat, averaging from a high of 85 degrees to a low of 76.

More visitors are returning to the island now that hurricane season is on the way out. If your kids have a school fall break, Key West may make a great destination for a quick October getaway.

That said, the island’s adult energy starts to come alive in October, as electric events like Fantasy Fest  kick off. This racy festival is probably too much for young kids, so don’t let it surprise you!

Key West in November

November is another good month to take advantage of shoulder season. As for Florida Keys weather in November, average temperatures float somewhere between a near-perfect 79 and 72 degrees.

Hurricane season isn’t technically over, though. That’s why November falls just short of being one of the top months for a visit to the Florida Keys. You may still get some storms, and a late-season hurricane could blow through.

The tradeoff is getting to avoid the large December and January crowds.  And prices are still reasonable before peak season hits. Get a babysitter and take in a show at the Key West Film Festival .

Key West in December

The weather in Key West is quite idyllic in December, with temps ranging from 77 to 70 degrees, and clear, sunny skies. Because December is the start of peak season, there are plenty of local events to enjoy.  

By the end of December, though, temperatures start to drop, so we’ll repeat our reminder here to prioritize heated pools if you’re headed to Key West over the holidays. Don’t be surprised by the Florida Keys weather in December.  If you’re heading to the Keys expecting it to be hot every day, this would be one of your worst times to visit the Key West. 

With endless activities (including family-friendly favorites like the Lighted Boat Parade ) and perfect lounging weather (if not swimming), it’s no surprise that many others have caught on too. 

Hotel prices reflect that December is a busy, popular month—especially during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Florida Keys on a Budget: Best Affordable Tropical Fun

After several trips to the Florida Keys the biggest question we get is how to visit the Florida Keys for cheap. “What’s an affordable hotel in Key West?” or “What key should we stay on for cheap?” Here’s a plan for an affordable Florida Keys vacation that is budget friendly and also tons of fun.

How to Budget for the Florida Keys

Whenever you budget for any vacation, you have to keep four things in mind:

• Transportation – flights / rental car / gas
• Hotels – lodging / vacation rental / resort
• Food – 3 meals a day and snacks
• Activities – cheap things to do are great, but big ticket fun is also nice

We tend to set a lump sum budget before we dedicate to our destination, and then if we can make our ideal vacation destination work we will fit it to our budget. The Florida Keys budget is an example of setting a total amount and then tailoring your plan to fit it.

Unless you’re flying into Key West and just staying there, a trip to the islands is for sure going to be a Florida Keys road trip .

Actual Florida Keys Costs per Day

To estimate daily costs, I’ve taken our last two trips to the Florida Keys and broken it down. This doesn’t account for flight or rental car costs, but just gas, lodging, food and fun. Consider our expenses as you make an affordable Florida Keys budget.

• Gas: 1 tank of gas gets you from Homestead, Florida to Key West and back to Homestead. Gas in the Florida Keys is the same price as on mainland Florida if you fill up on Key Largo, Marathon or Key West.
• Hotels in the Florida Keys:  this is the biggest cost at $150+ night assuming you go in off-season (July – October). For nicer Florida Keys resorts, you’ll be looking at $300+ per night in the off season. If you visit during peak season (November – June) you could be looking at $250+ per night for the budget hotel options. Vacation rentals match these rates.
• Dining – there are wonderful cheap places to eat in the Florida Keys (see below) so if you plan your dining to have great food on a budget, you will probably spend around $150 or less per day for a family of four. This doesn’t include fine dining, but just three quality, casual meals per day.
• Activities – there are lots of free and cheap things to do in the Florida Keys, so you’ll not have to worry too much here. To average our spending, it is about $50 per day for activities for four people. That doesn’t account for big ticket excursions like visiting Dry Tortugas National Park or doing a fishing trip, but includes things like state park activities or museums.

Here’s the Florida Keys budget breakdown, both doing the very cheap, most affordable style and then keeping things less expensive, but enjoying a few more nice meals and big ticket activities.

For the latter, we made the budget based on getting a nice hotel at a great deal, enjoying two mid-grade meals and one nice dinner each day, and then doing activities on the cheap but doing two big excursions (fishing, private charter, or Dry Tortugas ). The big ticket excursions tend to run between $600 and $900 for a family of four.

Of course, you can always set a lower budget and book your Florida Keys resort or lodging in advance on a great deal, but if you’re planning 2-3 months out, these costs are pretty accurate (2021 prices). And our tight budget Florida Keys amount is doable, but you must stay strict with your spending and book in advance.

Affordable Florida Keys Hotels

Something we’re always a fan of is using points for travel , and since there are Florida Keys resorts and hotels that are a part of major travel brands, such as IHG (Holiday Inn or Kimpton), Marriott, or Preferred Hotels (love the Hawks Cay Resort ) you’ll actually be able to find accommodations that you can use points for. There are also lots of independent hotels, such as the Laureate Hotel or Marker Resort in Key West .

When it comes to Florida Keys budget hotels, there aren’t too many in the Middle Keys, but you’ll find some small inns and roadside motels that could work well. We HAVEN’T stayed in any roadside motels in the Florida Keys, so we cannot recommend any one in particular, but there are quite a few, including these cute ones we peeked at and/or researched:

• Seafarer Resort – not fancy, but has some fun amenities
• Rock Reef Resort – pool and beach access at property
• Creekside Inn Islamorada – great location with good outdoor space, some renovations
• Sands of Islamorada – I think this looks like a great option (seen in person) but no recent reviews
• Siesta Motel Marathon – it boasts being awesome and is in a great location
• Looe Key Reef or Old Wooden Bridge Resort – these both look awesome and we’re actively planning to stay here soon! (low season is a small window in fall)

As a reminder, MOTEL is different than HOTEL. If you are choosing to book an inexpensive motel in the Florida Keys, know that it’s NOT going to be fancy. You may have amenities like a pool, kayaks or beach access, but you should not expect a property that is 100% 5 star across the board. Always expect cleanliness, but do not expect luxe.

Where to Stay in Key West

Key West is wonderful for finding unique places to stay for any range of budget. We’ve enjoyed staying in some beautiful hotels (loved both the Laureate Hotel and Marker Resorts ) but there are budget friendly options too, including vintage bed and breakfasts. An option like staying at the Laureate Hotel can be budget friendly because it’s so spacious and can be shared accommodations (it’s an all-suites hotel). Staying at the Marker Resort or similar is lovely, but not what we’d consider budget friendly.

The best way to find budget accommodations in Key West, or any of the Florida Keys, is to plan in advance. The trend of getting great last minute deals has passed, especially in a destination like the Florida Keys, so proper planning is much more important now.

Plan to spend more than $180 per night for a hotel or B&B in Key West. More nights in one place usually gets you a better rate, but not usually by too much. We’ve found both the Gates Hotel Key West and the 24 North Hotels to be wonderful budget Key West options.

Florida Keys Vacation Rentals and AirBNBs

Because the Florida Keys is such a fun, desirable destination, booking a vacation rental or AirBNB in the Keys may be more complicated. Minimum night stays are very common and accommodations for just a couple vs a family are more difficult to find.

As you search for vacation rentals in the Florida Keys you’ll typically find multiple rooms for multiple nights, making any booking several hundred dollars. Unless you’re a large family that would normally get two or more hotel rooms, you’ll be spending significantly more each night for a vacation rental in the Keys.

Planning a group trip is really smart though and perfect to turn a trip into an affordable Florida Keys vacation on a budget friendly trip. Between being able to split the cost of a Florida Keys vacation rental AND being able to split the cost of tour charters (see below) you’ll be able to lower the total cost per family significantly!

Cheap or Free Activities in the Florida Keys

Adding activities to a trip makes the total cost of a vacation go up significantly and quickly. We love to find free or really cheap things to do when the destination is an expensive one. Thankfully there are tons of cheap or free things to do in the Florida Keys. And beaches aren’t just inexpensive, they’re free things to do!

If you come with your own kayaking or snorkeling gear, your world of cheap options opens up significantly, as there are lots of places to kayak in the Florida Keys. 

Florida Keys Beaches for Free

You’ll find that there actually aren’t a ton of beaches in the Florida Keys. The way the islands are formed, beaches just aren’t a naturally occurring thing. There are SOME though. Parking is limited at many of the beach access points, so be smart about where you park along the highway. 

The beaches in the Florida Keys that are easily accessible are few and far between, and often they aren’t broad, sprawling beaches. Hands down the best beach in the Florida Keys is Sombrero Beach, and it has a playground too. As you look at the map of the Florida Keys beaches below, think about how many islands there are and these are basically the ONLY options, so you may find crowds depending on the day and weather.

If you want a Florida beach vacation, you need to consider the Florida Gulf Coast beaches or north Florida because the Florida Keys ARE NOT a beach destination.

Cheap Things to do in Key West

Although tours like snorkeling or other boating adventures in the Florida Keys are expensive, a wonderfully inexpensive option, particularly in Key West, is doing a guided walking tour. Whether it’s a nighttime ghost tour or a historic walk through the beautiful overgrown neighborhoods, guided walking tours provide a great value for the cost.

Tip : the Conch Train is a really great sightseeing tour in Key West, but for a family of four, it’ll run you around $120. It gives you a fairly complete history of the town and you’re allowed on and off, but it’s still rather pricey.

Another fun thing to do in Key West that’s only as expensive as you make it is hunting for key lime pies and window shopping. Since you can go at your own pace, walking along Duval Street or in the Historic Seaport neighborhood you’ll find lots of fun shops and places to get key lime everything. We love doing this simply because it lets us mingle with people and we get to try local treats, such as EVERYTHING key lime pie .

Visiting Fort Zachary Taylor State Park

At the edge of old town Key West is a really cool old fort from the Civil War era: Fort Zachary Taylor. With bunkers, tunnels, picnic areas, walking trails, historic displays and beach space, it’s the one stop shop for an interesting day. One of the cheapest things to do in Key West, a day at Fort Zachary Taylor will bring you everything you could want of a Flori-day.

Because it can get busy, arrive early if you’d like to secure a great beach spot or a prime picnic table in the shade. There is lots of parking, but lounge space is limiited.

Note : as you approach the entrance gate it may look really busy and like you’ll never get in, but it’s just a slow process. Be patient.

Kayaking in the Florida Keys (cheap or free!)

The cheapest way to get on the water in the Florida Keys is to arrive with your own kayaking gear. There are lots of wonderful spots to put in and beautiful, unique paddling trails.

Be careful when you launch that you stay out of the strong currents going between certain channels. You can tell where the current is strong because the water really does flow past quickly. For the safest experience, paddle out from your launch point and then turn to where you want to go versus just paddling along the shore until you’re near a channel.

If you don’t have your own gear, renting kayaks can be pretty inexpensive and totally worth it. You can expect hourly kayak rentals in the Florida Keys to range from $12 per hour within the state parks to $28 per hour for kayaks delivered to a variety of launch points. Some of the best kayaking in South Florida is found in the Keys, and it’s a great budget friendly activity.

Kayak Tours in the Florida Keys

If you would like to go on a kayaking tour in the Florida Keys, that’ll both give you a great experience with lots of information and tried and true routes as well as added safety thanks to a knowledgeable guide.

Guided tours are typically available within the state parks or busier marinas (like in Marathon). Key West has the most options for guided kayaking, and there are some good deals that fit with most budgets.

We LOVED doing the night kayaking in Key West. Although it’s one of the more expensive kayak tours, it’s the most worthwhile. If you’re trying to stick with inexpensive Florida Keys activities, this is one that’s worth allocating some of your budget for.

Best Inexpensive Tours in the Florida Keys

I wish I could honestly say that comprehensive tours of the Florida Keys were budget friendly, but I can’t. What you can do though is download an audio tour and enjoy it as you drive or walk. I know that sounds weird, but it’s not.

Here’s why an audio tour of the Florida Keys is a great idea:

• it’s like a podcast
• you can pause it and enjoy what distracts you at your own pace
• it’s way cheaper than buying four walking tour tickets
• uninterested family members don’t have to listen and YOU still get to enjoy it!

Budget Boat Tours in the Florida Keys

Getting out on the water in the Florida Keys is amazing, but it’s difficult to do it on a budget. There are not a lot of inexpensive options for boating in the Keys, but there are ways to make it fit into your affordable travel plan.

As you enjoy your road trip through the Florida Keys from Miami to Key West, you’ll pass by countless marinas where you’ll find a variety of charters, commonly for fishing. There are some great small operators that don’t do a lot of advertising that you can find simply by happening into a marina or one of the visitor centers. If a company isn’t booked up, you might find a great deal for an outing for your family.

One of the best values for a boat tour in the Florida Keys is actually doing one of the tours out of John Pennekamp State Park on Key Largo. There are snorkeling and glass bottom boat tours that go to the reef and are some of the most affordable Florida Keys tours.

Top Pick: Private Boat Charter in Key West

One of the great things about focusing on making a Florida Keys trip affordable is that by saving on accommodations, dining and daily activities you can set aside some budget for doing one or two INCREDIBLE adventures. To date, the best tour/experience/adventure we’ve done in all of our travel as a family was a private charter boat into the backwaters of the Florida Keys with Island to Island Charters.

Why was our day with Captain Allie and Island to Island Charters so amazing? We got to go out of Key West exploring sand bars, mangrove islands and perfect bays with NOBODY ELSE around. It was just us on the boat, and just us in the bays where we stopped.

Being on a private charter made it possible to enjoy the experience with no other people impacting our family time, our access to the water, or influencing the sort of activities we did. “Want to jump in the water here?” Yes! “Want to see some sharks today?” Yes! “Want to see my favorite secluded spot in the Florida Keys?” YES!!!

So what does a private charter like we did cost? While it can vary, you should expect to spend no less than $475 for a backwaters boat charter. The value of doing a private charter is REAL and very much worth it, in my solid honest opinion. Island to Island Charters that we went out with has the following options:

• 4 HOUR CRUISE  $550
• 6 HOUR CRUISE  $750
• 2 HOUR SUNSET CRUISE  $350

To make an experience like this budget friendly split the cost with friends or family who want to go as well. While you can’t just load up a boat with everyone you know, typically at least 6 passengers are allowed. Inquire with the boat captain if you have more than that.

I know that initially the cost of booking a private charter might seem like it isn’t affordable in general, but when you compare it to booking individual passage on another type of tour that’s shared and what you get out of it, you’ll see that the charter is an exceptional value with a truly remarkable experience.

Fishing Tours in the Florida Keys – NOT budget friendly

If fishing is your goal, that’s a different story than just getting out on the water. Because fishing charters include different sorts of licensing and a different set of knowledge and skills than general outings, finding a good deal on fishing for a family is difficult. You can expect to pay $400 and up for fishing charters ($400 is a deal), usually a half day will cost $600 or more.

Fishing charters tend to price themselves per person for shorter trips or for the full boat for longer fishing charters. Our family really enjoyed going out of Marathon on a fishing trip, but it was hosted because it was for work so we didn’t have to worry about fitting it into our budget for our Florida Keys trip.

One way to make a fishing day an affordable Florida Keys option is to not have everyone participate, but just those that would really be into it. For example, paying $60/person to be a part of a group boat is much more budget friendly than dropping $700+ to have a few people having a blast and the others just along for the ride.

Expect to pay $60-95 per person for spots on a daily fishing excursion with mixed company. How long the tour is and how far out the boat goes both play into the cost of a fishing trip in the Florida Keys, so consider what you really want out of it when you start to budget for it.

Historic Tours in Key West

You’ll find the Key West is one of the most historic towns in Florida, and as such there are lots of types of historic tours. I talked above about audio tours being the more affordable Florida Keys tour option, but if that’s not your style, you can always book something more personal.

Expect to pay $20-$50 per person for different types of walking or tram tours in Key West. We live in Saint Augustine , the oldest city in the USA, and have lots of our visitors do guided tours in town, and the MOST POPULAR is always the ghost tour . And yes, Key West has ghost tours too. You can book a private walking tour of Key West for your group too, and that saves quite a bit versus paying for individual tickets.

Hop-on-Hop-off tours are a great way to explore towns without your own car (or if you don’t want to drive around). Key West has both the Conch Train and the Old Town Trolley for this. The Conch Train only has a few stops that you can get on and off, but the history and stories are great. The Old Town Trolley covers the whole town and has lots more boarding options. They also do the Ghosts and Gravestones tour .

Delicious Affordable Dining in the Florida Keys

Something that makes a Florida Keys vacation so much fun is the food. When we build out a travel budget we try to set it up to do two cheap / mid-line meals and one nicer one each day. Because the Keys are both a vacation destination and a place real people live, you can find the whole run of dining options for any budget.

Upper Keys Affordable Dining

In the Upper Keys, Mrs Mac’s Kitchen (I & II) are really delicious and affordable. They even do breakfast beverage specials in case some champagne with breakfast sounds nice. Hobo’s Cafe is another good option up on Key Largo.

We’ve enjoyed several meals at Skipper’s Dockside and find the kids options and dinner entrees to be a good value and they’re delicious. Also, in our pursuit of the best key lime pie in the Florida Keys , we awarded the title to Skipper’s Dockside for having a perfect slice that’s not too sweet, awesome molasses crumb crust and perfect meringue topping.

Inexpensive Middle Keys Restaurants

Apparently we eat a lot of Cuban food when we’re in the Florida Keys, because as I went through our top picks we’ve got several. Habano’s Oceanfront Restaurant is our first pick. It’s not fancy but it’s delicious and also one of the least expensive meals we’ve had anywhere in the Keys. Get the Midnight Cuban sandwich because it’s the best.

Like how there are two Mrs Mac’s Kitchen locations, another good affordable dining option in the Florida Keys is the Square Grouper . They have a location in Islamorada and one in the Lower Keys on Cudjoe Key. For lunch you’ll find a good selection of apps and paninis that are budget friendly, but when it’s dinner the menu elevates and moves into the more fine-dining zone.

How can you drive past a place called “ What the Fish ?!” You can’t. For being fresh caught fish (or pork or chicken), they’ve got pretty good prices for all kinds of sandwich rolls. Heading south along the Overseas Highway, the next affordable dining we like is the Midway Cafe . It’s really wonderful with great key lime pie and nice outdoor seating.

As you get to Marathon you’ll find lots of options, including a super yummy Cuban cafe with awesome deli counter style dishes: Paradise Cuban Restaurant . They’ve got great Cuban pastries and lunch dishes and are a top pick of ours for inexpensive breakfast or lunch.

Top Key West Dining Picks

One of our favorite restaurants in the Florida Keys is in Key West. El Siboney Cuban Restaurant is absolutely awesome, and they have two locations, one in the neighborhood on Catherine Street and one on Stock Island at the east edge of Key West. I’m just going to list off the things you need to order: ham croquetas, roasted pork, Cuban sandwich, anything that comes with maduros (fried plantains), and you MUST have the guava cake.

No matter your dining style, El Siboney is our top dinner pick in Key West, and it’s just a bonus that it’s wonderfully budget friendly. The service is great and the food is top notch.

Moving on though, we also really enjoy Harpoon Harry’s . It’s located across from the Marker Key West and the Historic Seaport. They make incredible fried chicken and their fish tacos are some of the best in the Keys.

Another favorite for grab and go, but a bit pricier (still a good budget) is the Fisherman’s Cafe. It’s also in the Historic Seaport area and is walk up window only. They have some stand-up seating, but you should plan on taking your awesome fish sandwich with yucca fries to-go.

Our last pick, and it’s a stereotypical tourist pick (but for good reason) is Blue Heaven . It really is great, and I felt absolutely justified in getting Bananas Foster for breakfast there. Good value for the quality and portions, and to make it better, there are chickens running around in the outdoor dining space. Love it!

10 Free or Cheap Stops in the Florida Keys

Want to have a good list of fun, cheap or free things to do in your back pocket for your Florida Keys road trip? Well, here you go. These are all fun, unique and worth the stop on your drive from Miami to Key West:

• Wyland’s Whaling Walls: Key Largo (center of highway) or Marathon (K-Mart wall)

You’ll have a great trip to the Florida Keys, I’m sure, but to make it more affordable and budget friendly, be sure to plan it and book it in advance. In addition to getting better hotel rates, booking in advance allows you to prepay for activities, so if that helps you stick to your budget or increase your budget, book things when you know you want to.

Best Times To Visit Key West

The best time to visit Key West is between March and May. The winter crowds will taper off, the hotel rates become reasonable and the weather is remarkably similar to winter's blissful 70s and 80s. Speaking of winter – that season is the island's busiest and priciest. The rainy and humid summer months see the fewest tourists but the best hotel rates. The trade-off might be worth it, but you're still gambling against Atlantic hurricane season (June to November). Also, be aware that rates will surge during special events like Fantasy Fest.

If you are interested in the Florida Keys, one of the main questions you are probably asking yourself is: When is the BEST time to visit?! Truth is, there’s no bad time to visit the Keys, but each season has its pros and cons!

In this post, I’ll provide my personal opinion on when the best time to visit the Florida Keys is… but I will also give you a breakdown by season, including what you can expect for weather patterns, festivals and events, crowds, and more! Your preferred time to visit is going to depend on so many things, like your budget, interest, travel style, and this guide should help you narrow it down.

So keep reading if you would like to know more about what the Florida Keys are like in summer, fall, winter, and spring, and when I think the best time to visit is!

A Detailed Guide on the Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys

Like I mentioned above, there’s really no bad time to visit the Florida Keys. This is because the Florida Keys weather is tropical year round !

To start, I wanted to give you a quick overview of what type of temperatures you can expect in the Florida Keys across all four seasons! I’ll go into more specific details (about hurricanes, rain, etc.) in the later sections, but this is a great starting point!

I chose Key West to pull data from, but the average across all the Keys is typically very similar!

As you can see, temperatures in the Keys are quite warm year-round . It rarely dips below 60, and most days are filled with sunshine.. sounds perfect right?! Almost… but keep reading to find out the cons of each season!

Quick Look at the Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys

Due to the wonderful weather, the best time to visit the Florida Keys for events is between January and April. During this time, you can attend famous festivals and events like the Seven Mile Bridge Run , Conch Republic Independence Celebration, and the Florida Keys Seafood Festival!

Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys For Weather

In my opinion, the best time to visit the Florida Keys for weather is March – April. Of course, this is totally subjective to what you define as “good weather”. Some people prefer the extremely mild temperatures in December and January.

In general, avoid visiting in June, July, August, and September if you want to avoid sweltering temperatures, afternoon rain storms, and hurricanes! 😉

Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys For Low Prices

Naturally, the cheapest time to visit the Florida Keys is when the weather is the worst.. aka June, July, August, and September! As mentioned above, summer in the Florida Keys are hot and humid. Afternoon rain storms are extremely common. Plus, you run the risk of having your vacation cancelled by a hurricane.

Some might call summer the worst time to visit the Florida Keys. However, I disagree. As a Floridian, I can put up with the soaring temperatures. If a hurricane comes, I can simply cancel my vacation! I love visiting the Florida Keys in the summer because the crowds are small and hotel prices are low!

Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys For Boating

Similar to the above, the best time to get out on the water in the Florida Keys is summertime. In the summer, the ocean temperature in the Keys is nice and warm (around 86ºF in August!). You’ll typically be blessed with calm seas and sunny days. In addition, summer is the start of mini lobster season , which is a very popular time to visit the Keys!

Visiting the Florida Keys: Breakdown by Season

Below I’ll provide an overview of what it’s like to visit the Florida Keys in each season! This includes a more detailed breakdown of the weather patterns, plus a list of different events you can attend!

Visiting the Florida Keys in the Spring

Months : March – May Weather : Cool with little to no rain! Crowds : Minimal, except for spring breakers Events : Seafood festivals & fishing tournaments!

Spring Weather in the Florida Keys

Let’s start with Spring time, because it’s personally my favorite time to visit the Keys.

From March through May, the weather in the Keys is just perfect. Highs typically stay under the mid-80°s, and it’s nice and cool in the evenings. Plus, rainfall is pretty low, and so are crowds!!

Hotels shouldn’t be too pricey in March – May, as you are coming off high season (winter). However, there may be some crowds in Key West due to Spring Break, so keep that in mind!

Unlike a lot of places, summer is actually low season in the Florida Keys!

Why… you might ask? Two words. Heat . and. Humidity

If you’re not used to them, summers in south Florida can be particularly brutal! We are talking highs in the upper 90s and humidity up to 80%. So, it can be very unpleasant if you’re not used to this type of weather.

This is why a lot of people avoid visiting the Florida Keys in the summertime and why summer is the cheapest time to visit. If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, summer is the perfect time to visit the Florida Keys.

Summer is also the best time for snorkeling and scuba diving in the Keys . The ocean is warm, the seas are calm, and the water is clear!

In addition to the temps, June 1st marks the beginning of hurricane season . I’ll dive more into hurricane season in the next section, but one tip here: make sure you book refundable tickets and hotels if you are planning to visit during hurricane season!

In terms of events, one of the biggest draws to visiting the Florida Keys in the summer is the start of Lobster season! Mini season is the last Wednesday and Thursday in July , followed by the regular season stretching from August 6 through March 31 .

You will normally see an uptick in hotel prices and crowds during mini season and the beginning of lobster season, but then it levels out!

Fall Weather in the Florida Keys

Fall in the Florida Keys should really be split into two seasons..

During the first half, from the beginning of September to about mid-October, it’s basically just a continuation of summer.

Hurricane season is in full swing. It’s still extremely hot. And it rains almost every afternoon..

If you’re visiting this time of year, like I mentioned above, make sure to have a Plan B and book everything refundable. The reason is, 95% of hurricanes pop up in August – October, and they really pop up out of nowhere.

Unfortunately, I have had to cancel trips within a few days’ notice because of hurricanes, so it’s best to be prepared! Again, if you’re looking for less crowds and lower hotel prices, this can still be a great time to visit! Just expect some rain, and be prepared if things go awry!

However, from mid-October through November , temperatures start to cool and rain chances fall. October – November can be a beautiful time to visit the Keys – everything is pretty mild during this time. Plus, there are not many crowds!

Winter in the Keys is very similar to Spring in the Keys, except you might need a light jacket!

For real, the weather in the Florida Keys from December to February is absolutely to die for.. With highs in the 70s, and lows in the mid-60s, you will still see plenty of people in shorts and flip flops.

The water temperature is still swimmable (although you might want a wetsuit!)

And it BARELY rains..

Sounds too good to be true right? All of these perks come at the cost of higher hotel prices, more crowds, etc. So if you’re trying to save money on your trip to the Keys, winter might not be the best time to visit.

Packing for the Florida Keys

Other Things You Should Know

Hotels in the Keys can fill up FAST in high season or around major events and festivals. I recommend booking six months in advance if you know you’ll be visiting during one of these times. Make sure you read the reviews on TripAdvisor before choosing a hotel!

Like I mentioned above, if you’re planning to visit the Keys during hurricane season, make sure to book a refundable room. I always use Booking.com because they have great cancellation policies!

If you’re visiting the Florida Keys for the first time, I highly recommend renting a car and driving from Key Largo to Key West so you can really see all that the Florida Keys have to offer. But if you’re short on time, a weekend trip from Miami to Key Largo also fits the bill!

The average price of a 7-day trip to Key West is $2,450 for a solo traveler, $4,400 for a couple, and $8,249 for a family of 4 . Key West hotels range from $101 to $460 per night with an average of $178, while most vacation rentals will cost $390 to $1300 per night for the entire home. Average worldwide flight costs to Key West International Airport ( EYW ) are between $500 and $946 per person for economy flights and $1,569 to $2,969 for first class. These inexpensive rentals must be booked as early as possible and may not be in the most desirable areas. 1-star hotels are more likely to be available, with rooms starting at around $86.

These prices are based on millions of flights. For Key West our data includes 292 originating airports, and 86 airlines. The area has more variance in price compared with other locations. Flying to Key West from an airport like Jinnah International ( KHI ) in Karachi (Pakistan) for an average $6,019 trip fare will obviously cost a lot more than from an airport like Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International ( FLL ) in Fort Lauderdale, FL (the United States) at an average of just $166.

The cheapest day to fly in is typically Tuesday, and the cheapest day to fly back is usually Tuesday. Click here to see data for the cost of flights from your airport. In Key West, the difference between the cheapest and the most expensive week is about $446, so you can easily save about 89% simply by using our free flight guides and booking in advance.

Daily Expenses Budget

Daily vacation expenses vary more based on what you’re interested in doing. A fine dining restaurant with drinks around Key West can easily cost $570 per person or more, while a standard nice meal might be about $38 per person. Private tours can cost $1147 per day, but self-guided tours to see the outdoor sights can be free. Costs vary wildly, so recommendations are made based on the cost of living and averages we see for this type of vacation.

On a budget? Key West on the cheap isn’t easy, but here are tips

A Key West vacation won’t be cheap — no matter how many tips you read or how much you plan.

In 2023, Key West’s average hotel room rate was about $320 a night — among the highest in the country.

In addition, restaurant prices have risen, and you can spend lots of money on admissions and tours.

But the reason Key West commands high prices is that it is a special one-of-kind city and it’s a long way from alternative places to lodge. With history going back hundreds of years, well-preserved architectural gems, a funky street life and great outdoors activities in the surrounding waters, it’s a shame to pass up Key West because it is expensive.

It’s not easy, but it is possible to visit Key West on a budget. The key strategies are:

• Go during the off season, roughly June to November. (September and November are the cheapest of all.)
• Shop around for accommodations and compromise on amenities or location.
• Seek out affordable, casual restaurants. If you want to enjoy a special meal, make it lunch when a splurge will still cost less.
• Take advantage of the many terrific free and inexpensive things to do in Key West.

Finding a budget Key West hotel or B&B

Even in the summer off-season, your first search for basic Key West motels will come up with rooms starting at least $200 a night. I’ve tried several strategies to beat that price – some successful; some not.

I found bargains in the eastern part of Key West, three miles from Old Town. There are a dozen hotels clustered on Roosevelt Boulevard at the entrance to Key West. They share a shuttle service into Old Town, which helps with parking.

The problem here is that the location isn’t ideal and the price included add-on fees — a $10 “resort” fee at a run-down motel and a $20 parking fee at the very nice Marriott Key West Beachside Hotel.

I had better luck finding accommodations in Key West where I compromised on amenities. One of the great charms of Key West is the historic bed and breakfasts in Old Town. 

Most go for $300 to $400 a night. But there are a few quality places where several bedrooms share a common bathroom, and the savings are great.

Americans love their plumbing, but if you can share a little — as frugal travelers do elsewhere in the world — you can stay in Key West’s Old Town at a great B&B.

We stayed at the Key West Bed and Breakfast , 415 William Street, Key West, a turn-of-the-century house decorated with original art, vibrant color and serving a spectacular breakfast of fresh fruits and homemade blueberry coffee cake.

Booking rooms in Key West requires a consumer to be vigilant: Everybody, it seems, finds ways to tack on extra fees.

The historic Curry House B&B where I stayed recently added a $35 a night “cleaning fee” that was not disclosed in advance (or was extremely well hidden.) With that charge, it was no longer a budget option.

“Resort fees” of $15 and even $50 a night are common, and you often discover them only when checking in, so if you’re on a budget, ask ahead of time.

Other lower priced alternatives in Old Town guest houses: Eden House  (starts at $205 off-season), Duval House (as low as $155 for a November date), Caribbean House (as low as $150 for an early December date), Paradise Inn (as low as $125 for a date in December.) La Pensione (as low as $150 in early December.) These choices all have private baths; most do not allow children.

Be aware though: These places will be at least $300 a night Janurary to April. For example, La Pensione has rooms for $150 in early December. In mid-January; rooms are $415.

The least expensive lodging in Key West would be 10-bunk-beds to a room at Seashell Motel and Key West Hostel. Hostel beds start at $69 per person; bare-bones motel rooms at $119. Reviews are mixed.

Airbnb and VRBO both have many properties in Key West and some appear to beat hotel prices. One of the most intriguing types of listing are houseboats. If you’re considering a houseboat rental , read this advice from Karuna Eberl, co-author of “Key West & the Lower Keys Travel Guide” with a few tips and questions to ask. 

Also, beware of add-on prices that can dramatically increase VRBO and AirBnB prices.

There are some other vacation rental networks that include Key West listings and they are worth browsing. (You can find them by Googling “owner vacation rentals key west.” I can’t vouch for them, having never tried them, but I saw some potentially good values.)

Another alternative for a reasonably priced room is to stay in the Upper or Middle Keys and come to Key West for a day trip .

One nearby place to stay is Parmer’s Resort , 565 Little Torch Key.  It’s 27 miles or 40 minutes outside Key West.  During low season (September through mid-December), rooms start at $160. This is a 1950s-vintage Keys-style waterfront resort with pool, views and breakfast included. Like a lot of Keys properties, Parmer’s used to be more moderately priced, but it’s a good value if you want a resort experience AND a visit to Key West. Rooms in January start at $156, but most are $270 and up.

A few other inexpensive nearby choices: Sugarloaf Lodge is 17 miles from Key West and offers basic waterfront rooms off-season starting at $155.

Unadorned and very basic roadside motel rooms are $109 off season at Big Pine Key Motel , 30725 Overseas Hwy, Big Pine Key, which is 29 miles from Key West. Looe Key Reef Resort, 25 miles from Key West, caters to divers and offers basic rooms for as little as $155 in the fall low season.

You can find summer rates that are lower in the motels of Marathon. These are an hour from Key West, but it’s a beautiful drive over the Seven Mile Bridge.

We’ve stayed in some ordinary mom-and-pop motels in Marathon for $135 to $175 – the Blackfin Resort and Marina , 4650 Overseas Highway, and the Kingsail Resort , 7050 Overseas Highway.

These are not memorable; rather, they are just places to sleep while you fill your days with activities.

If you’re a camper, camping is another good way to make your trip inexpensive. Campsites in the Keys are way more expensive compared to other locales (as much as $100 a night for tents), but they still may save you over hotel rooms.

In search of budget Key West restaurants

Key West is foodie heaven, with prices to match.  

Finding good buys in restaurants will take some planning: You may not stumble across these places when you get hungry unless you keep a map handy.

One tip for dining in Key West is to make your main evening meal a tasty assemblage of half-price happy hour appetizers.

An especially good place for happy hour is the historic Key West Seaport . The boardwalk along the harbor is one of the best free activities in Key West.

Folks are feeding tarpon from the docks, fishing charters are displaying their catches and all the colorful yachts and historic ships are on display, with flags snapping.

Many harbor restaurants have happy hours, but I can recommend Alonzo’s Oyster Bar , 700 Front St., Key West. All drinks and an extensive selection of appetizers are half price from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and it’s easy to make a meal of it. We sat outside overlooking the harbor in a setting that didn’t compromise on atmosphere.

Beyond the harbor area but still centrally located,  First Flight Island Restaurant and Brewery, 301 Whitehead St., has a great happy hour at the bar and nearby high-tops. First Flight is located in the beautifully restored historic building that was the ticket office for Pan Am in the 1920s when it began air service between Key West and Havana.

From 4 to 6 p.m., happy hour brings cheap drinks and great appetizers at $5 to $7 a dish. We put together a delicious dinner combining beef brisket mac and cheese, Six Hour Confit Chicken Wings and a plate with three kinds of hummus.

After you eat “dinner” at happy hour, head to a vantage point for sunset. Afterwards, you can enjoy a late-night Cuban sandwich, conch fritters or an arepa at a variety of inexpensive, atmospheric Key West eateries where you order food at a counter and eat at a picnic table or bench.

A few good examples:

We had a great Cuban sandwich ($11) at Frita’s Cuban Burger Cafe , 425 Southard St. Frita’s Cuban burger ($10) is unusual and spicy. Seating is in a small outdoor patio or benches at the take-out window.

Near the seport, is the legendary  B.O’s Fish Wagon at 801 Caroline St., Key West.  B.O.’s Fish Wagon is an open-air assemblage of drift wood, recycled sheets of tin and a 1950s Chevy truck apparently held together by bumper stickers. Folks rave about the fish tacos.

Nearby,  Garbo’s Grill at 603 Greene St., Key West, is sort of a permanently stationed food truck. Seating is outdoors on milks crates or coolers. Their mahi tacos and  Kogi Koren Beef Shortribs, however, ensure there is usually a line and a festive atmosphere.

Right on Duval Street is a small treasure :  the Conch Shack , a restaurant no more than 10 feet wide that accepts only cash and serves up fresh, reasonably priced fare. Three conch fritters are $6; a cheeseburger is $9. Seating is on stools at a counter.

For breakfast or lunch, consider this gem:

A budget-friendly but delicious spot for your obligatory key lime pie is the Old Town Bakery . It’s off the beaten path, five blocks east of Duval at Eaton and Grinnell streets. The key lime pie , ranked in the top 10 in the Keys by Miami New Times is $3.75 a slice with fresh in-house whipped cream, whereas other key lime pies on restaurant menus are $7-$10 a slice. There are also a dozen $10 sandwiches, or come for breakfast for $7.25 breakfast burritos or $4 almond croissants. Open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For an air-conditioned restaurant with table service, we can suggest two classic Key West spots:

You can get reasonably priced diner fare at Harpoon Harry’s , 832 Caroline St. One thing that keeps prices down is that this is a cash-only business. It is most popular for breakfast and lunch ($10 to $12 for sandwiches) but there’s a blue-plate specials for $12.95 each night.

As I asked Key West residents for suggestions for budget dining, at least three people recommended the classic Cuban restaurant , El Siboney , 900 Catherine St., Key West. This is a traditional restaurant with table service and bargain prices — $13.95 for three different preparations of pork, $17.95 for grilled mahi or grouper, topping out at $24.75 for a few types of steak. It was all good and service was efficient. There is now an El Siboney on nearby Stock Island too.

For that “special” lunch, we thought booking a table at Latitudes , located on an island off Key West called Sunset Key, was perfect because it includes a boat ride from Key West to the island. It’s perhaps a 10 minute ride, but the Caribbean color of the water was stunning to see from a boat. The tables have spectacular oceanfront views (with indoor and outdoor seating) and the food is excellent. Lunch for two, including tax and tip, was $70. (It looks like a great place for a splurgy breakfast too.)

Free fun is the secret to Key West on the cheap

It’s easy to be entertained on the cheap by Key West: On your first visit, you might spend all day just wandering historic Old Town and joining the nightly street carnival at Mallory Square sunsets.

If you folks want lower room prices in Key West then stop going. If there rooms don't fill up then they're forced to drop their prices.

I truly love the keys. It's unfortunate that they have priced themselves out of business. I just switched to cruise ship travel to the Caribbean because it cost is so much cheaper. A night in the keys goes from 200-900+ a cruise is less than 100 up to 1000 but that is a week or much more. Check out cruises vs rental in the keys.

The best time to visit Key West is between March and May. Falling right between peak tourist season and hurricane season, this time of year promises temperatures in the low 70s and 80s Fahrenheit, limited rainy days, smaller crowds, and better flight and hotel prices. Winter (November through February) is the busiest season, and while the island is lively and fun, expect expensive flights and car rentals and for hotels and vacation rentals to be at capacity. Conversely, you’ll find unbelievable deals every June through October, but at a price—it's during Atlantic hurricane season.

Hurricane Season in Key West

Key West, like the rest of Florida, is no stranger to hurricanes. Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30 every year, with the most powerful storms typically forming in August, September, and October. Because Key West is surrounded entirely by water, an oncoming hurricane often leads to a mandatory evacuation of the island.

Peak Season in Key West

When the weather gets colder up north, winter travelers flock south to Key West for its blue skies and warm sunshine. For that reason, November to February is peak travel season in Key West. Thanksgiving week officially kicks off tourist season in the Florida Keys. After that, restaurants and hotels are at capacity, flight prices are more expensive than usual and traffic in and out of Key West gets pretty heavy. The island isn't that big, so added crowds are definitely noticeable. If you’re looking to visit at this time of year, make sure you book your flights, hotels, and rental cars early for two reasons: to make sure you get one before they’re all gone, and to save money on what is already a more expensive time to visit Key West.

Fantasy Fest in Key West

Key West’s most popular event is Fantasy Fest , a 10-day costuming and masking festival that takes place at the end of every October. For a week and a half, expect funky costumes, public nudity, X-rated parties, a “Kinky Carnival,” appearances by adult film star Ron Jeremy and the main event: a nighttime costume parade down Duval Street on the last Saturday of Fantasy Fest. If you’re planning to go, wear your wildest costume and join the tens of thousands of locals and visitors crowding the streets of Key West—the island has been hosting it for more than 40 years.

While Key West never gets cold, January is the coldest month of the year there—with temperatures averaging between 65 and 74 degrees Fahrenheit. This is peak of “snowbird” season, that time of year when residents of colder climates escape to the warmth of South Florida, so flight and hotel room prices are higher and hotels fill up quickly.

Events to check out:

• The annual Key West Literary Seminar brings together book lovers and contemporary authors for readings, lectures, book discussions, and more.
• Dubbed one of the top ten winter half marathons, the Key West Half Marathon & 5K Run follows a 13.1-mile course that takes runners through picturesque Old Town Key West and along the idyllic Florida Keys coastline.

Similar to January, high and low temperatures are in the mid-70s and 60s Fahrenheit, respectively. February is the tail end of peak tourist season, so flight and hotel room prices will be at a premium.

March marks the official end of tourist season in Key West. This is a great time to visit the island, as hotel and flight prices are cheaper, temperatures are mild and Key West isn’t as crowded.

• Start March with the Conch Shell Blowing Contest, which has been a tradition on the island for more than 50 years. This friendly competition, which celebrates the historical importance of conch in Key West, has people of all ages attempting to play music on fluted conch shells.

During April, visitors start to feel the transition from spring to summer. By the end of the month, the higher temperatures start to creep into the 80s Fahrenheit, but the cool Gulf of Mexico breezes keep nights mild.

• Don’t miss the Conch Republic Independence Celebration , an eccentric, 10-day party with bar crawls, an arts and crafts fair, hat contest, drag show, dog festival, and a famous reenactment of the Conch Republic’s “Great Sea Battle.”
• The Key West Paddle Classic includes both a 12-mile Elite Race and a 4-mile open race around the island, all on paddle board.

Summer has arrived in Key West. The sun beats down hard during Key West summers, so bring light clothing, plenty of sunblock and bug spray.

• The Key West Songwriters’ Festival is an annual showcase of America's top performing songwriters in an intimate setting. It’s the largest festival of its kind in America, and includes five days and nights of meet-and-greets, artist talks, concerts, and more.

This is both the heart of summer and the official start of hurricane season in Key West. Many people think that South Florida summers are all sunshine, but don’t believe the myth. When there isn’t a hurricane, sunny mornings and afternoon thunderstorms are the norm. It’s still hot, however, so wear light clothing and pack an umbrella.

• Start June with Key West Pride , a five-day celebration of all things LBGTQ+ with pool and beach parties, late-night drag shows, snorkeling, kayaking, glass-bottom boat tours, a street fair, and, of course, pageants to elect Mr. Key West Pride, Miss Key West Pride, and Ms. Key West Pride.
• Mango Fest Key West celebrates Florida’s favorite fruit with a day-long festival that includes mango tastings, mango daiquiris, culinary competitions between local chefs and residents, live music, art, and food vendors.
• Mystery Fest Key West brings together mystery writers, aspiring authors and true crime experts and fans to America’s “Southernmost City” for meet-and-greets, book signings, workshops, panel discussions, and lectures.

July is the hottest month of the year in Key West. During this time of year, highs are in the 90s Fahrenheit and temperatures rarely dip below 80 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s still hurricane season, however, so afternoon thunderstorms are common and there is always a threat of devastating tornadoes and hurricanes.

• Key West’s annual Key Lime Festival is one of the tastiest events of summer, with pie-eating and cooking contests, culinary showcases, the Key Lime Cocktail Sip & Stroll, and The Key Lime Pie Hop.
• Join Key West’s longest ongoing 5K, the Hemingway 5K Sunset Run/Walk & Paddleboard Race , which is part of the annual Hemingway Days Festival . Runners will compete in a scenic flat course that takes them through the island’s most famous landmarks, like the Ernest Hemingway Home, the iconic Southernmost Point and Key West’s famous Green Parrot Bar.

August in South Florida is typically when humidity is the highest. Much like July, expect hot days and frequent thunderstorms. August is also the peak of hurricane season, so prepare for the worst and make sure all flights and hotel rooms booked during this time are refundable.

• Marking the start of lobster season, don’t miss the annual Key West LobsterFest. It’s a four-day festival, right on Duval Street, offering lobster cooked every way possible.

As the unofficial start of fall, temperatures in Key West start to cool down (slightly) in September. This is also the peak of hurricane season, so while there might be more of a pleasant breeze, visitors should pack for both sunny and rainy climates. Luckily, this is also shoulder season—so hotel room and flight prices are cheaper.

• Kick off September with Womenfest , the largest celebration of lesbians in America, which brings together thousands of women from all over the world.  
• During Labor Day weekend, head to Key West Brewfest , a craft beer festival with more than 200 beer and ale samples, oceanside tastings, beer-focused brunches, pool parties with specialty beers, daytime tap takeovers, and beer-pairing dinners.

October is one of the most popular times to visit Key West! The first couple weeks are quiet and perfect for a romantic or family-friendly getaway—but when Fantasy Fest comes to town at the end of the month, Key West turns into a giant, 10-day party. It’s the last month of hurricane season, but if one doesn’t hit, days are typically sunny and temperatures go as low as the mid-70s Fahrenheit.

• Fantasy Fest , a costuming and masking festival that takes place at the end of every October, includes 10 days of parades, X-rated carnivals, adult film stars, and a general celebration of all things kinky. It’s been taking place in Key West for over 40 years, and is undoubtedly the island’s most popular festival.

November is an important month in Key West because hurricane season is finally over. As fall and the start to winter set in, the island gets cooler. While the weather is perfect, this is the start of the winter “snowbird” season, so expect crowded hotels and higher flight prices.

• Every year, the Key West Film Festival takes over the island with four days of films, screenings and special events for filmmakers, actors and film enthusiasts alike.
• As the holiday season approaches, so does the Lighting of the Bight: Key West Harbor Walk of Lights . This kick-off event is the official lighting ceremony for the “Harbor Walk of Lights,” which lights up the island nightly through New Year’s Eve with a lit Fishing Buoy Tree, Nautical Christmas Tree, the original Key West Lobster Trap Tree, and more.

As the holiday season comes to sunny South Florida, expect warm days and cooler, more breezy nights. Key West is busy with tourists at this time of year, so book your flights and hotel rooms early before they are all gone.

• Celebrate Christmas with the Key West City Home Holiday Parade, which includes marching bands, local schools, floats, a live Santa Claus and more parading down Truman Avenue.
• The annual Schooner Wharf Bar Lighted Boat Parade is a holiday tradition in Key West. Enter your own boat, or grab a seat at a waterfront bar to watch all the fun—festive, lit boats, from holiday-inspired rowboats to tall ships set sail around Key West's Historic Seaport and harbor areas.

The best time to visit Key West is from March to May. It's just after the peak tourist season and just before hurricane season, so it's the ideal time for enjoying great weather with minimal crowds.

Late October to February is the most popular time to visit Key West as travelers from cold cities up north escape to the warm Florida beaches. Key West is already an expensive destination, but prices skyrocket during the busy winter months.

Thunder storms become a frequent occurrence beginning in June and lasting until September. This is also hurricane season, although a major storm hitting the Keys isn't likely. If you don't mind the rain and humidity, it's the cheapest time to visit.

Experts agree that spring is generally considered to be the best time to visit the Florida Keys. Guests who travel during this season will avoid the high costs of staying in the winter and enjoy the benefits of comfortably warm temps.

Plus, spring is outside of Florida’s hurricane season, so you won’t have to worry too much about the weather.

What Is The Best Month To Visit Florida Keys?

No matter what you’re interested in, it’s hard to go wrong with an April vacation in the Keys. All of the winter crowds have dispersed by this time, which means you won’t have to contend with crowds, high airfare, and high hotel fees. April is also well before Florida’s annual hurricane season.

If you travel to the Keys during April, expect comfortable temps between 70°F – 80°F and annual precipitation of only around 2 inches . Other benefits of visiting during April include clear waters for snorkeling and a few fun festivals like Key West’s Conch Republic Independence Celebration.

What’s The Average Weather In The Florida Keys?

The Florida Keys are hot all year round, with average daytime highs at about 80°F and lows in the 70s. So, even if you’re visiting the Florida Keys in the winter, you’d better pack sunglasses and sunscreen.

Of course, the heat you’ll experience in the summertime is far more intense than during the winter.

Summer highs can easily reach the 90°F mark with very high humidity. Winter, on the other hand, is far more comfortable, with daytime highs around 75°F and the lowest chance of precipitation.

Both the spring and autumn typically experience highs in the 80s and lows in the 70s. The closer you are to summer, the higher the chance you’ll encounter rain during the spring or fall.

What Is The Coldest Month In Key West?

With daytime temps in the mid-70s, January is the “coldest month” to visit Key West. Although temps could dip into the 60s at times, they will rarely be any lower than that. With temps like these, is it any wonder Key West’s hottest season is also its coolest?

What Is The Rainy Season In Key West?

Interestingly, South Florida is the only place in the USA that’s officially classified as a “ tropical maritime climate .” Like most other areas in this zone, the Florida Keys only have two seasons: wet and dry.

The rainy season in Key West starts in May and runs through October. Typically, the wettest months of the year are June, August, September, and October, with average precipitation totals of between 4 – 6 inches.

Both May and July usually experience moderate rainfall, with about 3.5 inches every year.

During the dry season (December through April), of course, chances of rainfall are significantly diminished. Monthly rainfall rates between December and April are rarely above 2 inches.

When Is Florida’s Hurricane Season?

Florida’s hurricane season officially begins at the start of June and stops at the end of November. Although hurricanes can appear at any moment in this timeframe, the most dangerous time of year is from August to September.

The cheapest time to visit Key West is also the riskiest: hurricane season. Most tourists don’t want to be stuck on an island with the ever-present threat of a hurricane.

But it’s not just the hurricane risk that drives hotel prices down. Other negatives of visiting during this season include uncomfortable humidity levels, high temps, and an increased chance of rain.

What’s The Best Time To Snorkel In The Florida Keys?

When it comes to snorkeling, May is generally considered the premier month to visit the Florida Keys. As already mentioned, tourists who visit in the spring don’t have to worry about exorbitant hotel fees, hot temps, or huge crowds.

For snorkelers, May is a superb month because it’s far from hurricane season, not super windy, and the water tends to be extra clear.

For those who can’t book a May trip, the next best option would be months like February, March, April, and November. All of these months are also outside of the dangerous hurricane season and the crowded winter season.

Best Times For Wildlife Viewing In Florida Keys

The Key Deer

The Key deer is a smaller relative of the North American white-tailed deer in South Florida that almost went extinct in the mid-20 th century.

Although still classified as an endangered species, the Key deer are slowly growing in a few of the southernmost Keys.

Typically, you have a better chance of seeing Key deer on multiple southern Keys during the wet season , as it’s easier for them to travel around. During the dry season, however, they usually cluster on No Name Key and Big Pine Key.

The Lower Keys Marsh Rabbit

Another adorable endangered species in the southern Keys is known as the Lower Keys marsh rabbit . At an average length of 15 inches and a weight of 3 pounds, these cute critters are officially the tiniest marsh rabbits on earth.

According to researchers, the Lower Keys marsh rabbit breeds between December and June. Your best chance of finding a Lower Keys marsh rabbit will be in elevated areas near freshwater marshes in the southern Keys, particularly Big Pine Key.

Tarpon Fishing

Another popular reason people visit the Keys is to take advantage of its fantastic fishing locations. One island in particular that gets a lot of sport fishing games is Islamorada.

The best time to travel to Key West is a subjective opinion that can differ from one person to the next. Different seasons will meet different needs of different types of travelers. If you are needing to escape the harsh winters where you live and don’t mind paying higher accommodation rates or waiting longer for a table at a restaurant, then the winter months are a perfect time for you to visit.

I believe the best time to travel to Key West taking cost, fewer crowds, weather, and events into account, is in the spring, toward the end of April.

Winter months.

The winter time is the most popular time to travel to Florida, the weather is often the warmest and most mild out of the entire USA during these months.

It is dry season, particularly in the tropical area of the Florida Keys, so the humidity is down and you aren’t plagued with everyday thunderstorms. There is typically a constant breeze from the tradewinds and it is sunny with an average temperature in the high 70s.

In the months of December through February in Florida the weather is near perfect. This delightful weather also causes the winter to be the most crowded and most expensive time to travel to Key West for accommodations, experiences, and food. Some of the most popular events and festivals are held during the winter months that attract people from all over the world.

Travelers who are interested in a rowdier holiday, believe that crowds add to the charm and excitement of Key West. You can easily achieve a party-filled holiday during this time of year. There are parties at almost every bar and venue that you walk into at night, especially on Duval Street.

Tip: Many people visit Key West as part of a Miami to Key West road trip.  The best time to drive from Miami to Key West is when there is less traffic on the roads.

December tends to be one of the most expensive times of year to visit Key West. Because of this, I did some research on fun free activities in Key West that are available to you and fun for the whole family if you decide to take your holiday in December.

You can pack a picnic and find a good spot on Duval Street to watch the annual Key West Holiday Parade. Every year, it is hosted on December 3rd at 7 pm. The parade kicks off at the corner of Truman Avenue and Eisenhower Drive and comes to a close at the corner of Duval Street and Front Street.

For those with an interest in history and mechanics, there is a Holiday Classic Car Show hosted on December 18th from 11 am to 3 pm at Historic Seaport. It is held in the main parking lot on Caroline and Margaret Square.

The Holiday Boat Parade is held on December 9th and offers you a view of an armada of vessels and ships decorated to the fullest with lights, tinsel, and more.

If you want to get a little closer to the action, you can get a ticket with Classic Harbor Line Charters and get to ride on their impressive pirate-ship-like schooner known as Schooner America 2.0. Tickets cost $104 and will give you three hours onboard this beautiful ship. You will get a front-row seat to over 25 boats decked out to the fullest while sipping hot cider and conch soup provided by the Classic Harbor Line Crew.

The weather in Key West in January is extremely mild compared to pretty much everywhere else in the country during that time.

There is an average low temperature of 65℉ and an average high temperature of 75℉. You can expect around 4 days of rainfall, although it is typically relatively dry for the most part. Because of Key West’s lovely weather in January, some of the most fun and popular events are held in January.

For the foodies of the group, a visit to the Florida Keys Seafood Festival is a must. The festival is held on January 13th and 14th, and tickets for general admission cost $10 and grant you access for both days, and children 12 and under get in for free. It is held in Bayview Park, and the purchase of a ticket enters you into a raffle for $250 worth of seafood. Proceeds from the event go to sustainable fisheries management and youth scholarships.

If you aren’t fulfilled with one food festival, be sure to grab tickets to the Key West Food and Wine Festival . The 2024 festival has a Spanish theme, offering culinary delicacies and cultural staples. The event is held from January 23rd-28th. Tickets go on sale October 1st, I would recommend getting your tickets in advance to ensure entry.

If you and your family are country music fans, then you will have to grab tickets to the Mile 0 5-Day Red Dirt and Americana Music Festival . Tickets start at $500 per person for general admission and guarantee you a hootin’ and hollerin’ time.

February is one of the coldest months of the winter, causing it to be one of the most popular times to travel to Key West. It is the best month to visit Key West if you hate the extreme heat. February is also one of the most expensive times of year to visit this quaint island town.

It is likely that you will need dinner reservations for every restaurant that you plan to eat at, if you would like to be seated at a reasonable hour.

For those who appreciate the arts, I recommend visiting the annual Old Days Art Festival in Key West which is held from February 25th through 26th in the Truman Waterfront Park. The event is hosted by the Key West Art Center.

Spring in Key West

In my opinion, springtime is the most pleasant time of the year to visit the Keys. Seasonal crowds have begun to subside, giving you a bit more space and freedom.  Prices are not at their lowest out of the year but also are not as high as they are in the winter months.

Although, Key West is a popular spring break spot between between March and May. Be sure to expect families with children and rowdy college students. The spring break college crowd can make for a lively stay if you are staying close to Duval Street or some late-night bars.

From March to May you may be blessed with seeing some migratory birds, including the Least Tern and Antillean Nighthawk as they make their way through the keys during the spring.

Key West in March:

Key West weather in March is still relatively mild, which is why accommodation and excursion prices are still on the high end. March in Key West has an average high temperature of 78℉ and an average low temperature of 68℉.

It is still very dry out and you can expect about 3 days of rainfall on average. One of Key West’s local traditions, the “Conch Honk” occurs on the first Saturday of every March. It is a Conch Shell Blowing Contest in the garden of the Oldest House Museum at 322 Duval Street. In 2024, the event falls on March 5th.

It is free to participate and there are conchs available for sale for those who didn’t come equipped with their own.

If you are interested in getting an inside look into some of Key West’s most incredible homes and gardens, you can join the annual Key West House and Garden Tour hosted on March 17th-18th. The event is held by the non-profit Old Island Restoration Foundation. It is recommended that you purchase tickets in advance, as spots fill up quickly.

The end of April is the best time of year to visit Key West . The heat and humidity have risen just enough to scare off the majority of tourists, and you will find that accommodations, food, and activities are all slightly more affordable.

April will bring you an average high temperature of 82℉ and an average low temperature of 71℉.  It is still technically dry season, but you can expect about 3 days of rainfall.

If you plan to visit towards the end of April, you will be able to make it to the Conch Republic Independence Celebration , April 23rd is the big day of celebration for the Conch Republic’s “secession”. The act of secession was merely satire, and came about in 1982 when the US military held a border control blockade of the Florida Keys.

Citizens of Key West organized a “secession” and declared war against the United States, only to surrender after 1 minute and after asking for 1 billion dollars in foreign aid. The Conch Republic lives on mostly as a tourist attraction. 2024 will be Key West’s 42nd annual Independence Celebration and the activities will begin on April 20th and conclude on April 29th.

For the foodies of the group, you can visit A Taste of Key West , on April 24th from 6-9 pm located at Truman Waterfront Park. General admission is free to walk around and check everything out.

There are also different tiers of tickets that are available for purchase that will grant you a different amount of goodies according to the price. If your family is interested in seeing a Naval Air Show, there is one hosted in Boca Chica Field on April 15th-16th. Admission is free for all ages.

Key West in May:

May brings slightly warmer temperatures and the slowing of tourism becomes more noticeable. Afternoon thunderstorms start to creep their way into the daily routine towards the end of the month.

Throughout the month of May, you will get an average high temperature of 88℉ and an average low temperature of 78℉. May also typically has around 5 days of consistent rain. Later in the month, you will experience more storms and precipitation as hurricane season approaches.

If you or someone in your party is a musician, you all may enjoy the 28th annual Songwriters Festival that is held from May 1st to May 6th, 2024.

The festival will host over 30 performances and 150 performers located throughout Key West. This festival has been accredited with giving many big names their start, including Florida Georgia Line, Maren Morris, and Jake Owen.

Summer Months in Key West

If you plan your trip to Key West during the summertime , you will be blessed with the lowest rates of the year and get to experience the island in its least crowded state. However, it is Key West hurricane season, so be sure to keep an eye on the weather in case any rescheduling is necessary.

It can be extremely humid, so be sure to schedule some beach or pool time on your trip to help you cool off a bit. A lot of the tourism consists of families with children on their summer vacation, so if you are especially adverse to being around children, this might not be the time to visit Key West for you.

The heat and humidity are also very prevalent during these months, and summertime in the Keys is not for the faint of heart.

Hurricane season has officially begun and it is common to see an afternoon thunderstorm nearly every day. Key West is an accepting place for all, and you will see people from all walks of life celebrating Key West Pride, with festivities from June 5th to June 9th, 2024.

During the Pride Fest , you will have access to a 4-day party consisting of drag shows, wine tastings, theater performances, dance parties, and more. All of that partying can really make you work up an appetite.

If you stay for a couple of more weeks, you can get the pleasure of experiencing the 7th annual Mango Fest held June 27th through June 30th, 2024 to experience all things mango, including culinary delicacies, educational speeches, and an assortment of different demonstrations.

The temperature and humidity continue to rise in July and the month has an average high temperature of 90℉ and an average low temperature of 81℉. There are typically around eight days of rainfall. At this point in the year, you can expect regular afternoon thunderstorms from the higher temperatures. However, it’s very rare that these storms will develop into a hurricane this early in the season.

July is also one of the most humid months of the year, rivaling with August. July also offers some of the warmest water temperatures of the year. The water temperature can get up to 90℉, which is an especially warm water temperature.

This past year the ocean around Key West got higher than 100℉, a startling temperature for the sea. If the heat is getting to you, there’s no shortage of icey cold beverages to cool you off. You can grab a famous Key Lime Colada at Island Dogs Bar.

If you’re a key lime fan and you’d like to learn more about Key West’s most famous fruit, you can visit the Key Lime Festival , held from July 3rd to July 7th, 2024. At this festival, you will find culinary events and intricacies for the whole family, a sip & stroll, pie drop, mini pie making, key lime tree master classes, and even a scavenger hunt.

If you are in town for Fourth of July and are hoping to see some amazing fireworks, the best place to watch them is arguably the White Street Pier. Every year, the fireworks display continues to get better and better.

Key West in August:

August is often the hottest month of the year with an average high at 91℉ and an average low of 81℉ and there are usually at least 10 days of rainfall. The heat and humidity are a doozy this time of year.

This can guarantee you some of the lowest rates and least crowded times of the year in Key West. It is the cheapest time to fly to Key West. Although, the cheapest rates in Key West occur in August, these rates still might not seem very inexpensive for most.

If you are there between August 8th and 11th, you can celebrate the kickoff of lobster season at the Key West Lobsterfest . 2024 will be the 27th annual celebration. The festivities typically include lobster boils, music performances, pool parties, and more.

If you can manage to be outdoors in the heat, you can visit the West Martello Tower, which is home to Key West Garden Club’s Botanical Gardens. It is a Civil War-era fort that was never completed. Construction began in 1863 and ceased in 1873. In 1949, the West Martello Tower ruins were considered an eyesore and many Key West residents wanted it gone.

It offers a fantastic view of the Atlantic Ocean and Higgs Beach, so many wanted to put something there that highlighted the great view. There used to be a huge strangler fig that offered a wide shadow coverage, but it was unfortunately blown over during Hurricane Irma that passed through in 2017. The gardens are usually riddled with butterflies and it is almost guaranteed that you will see some.

After finishing at the West Martello Tower , you can check out the African cemetery located between the tower and the White Street Fishing Pier. In 1860, 294 enslaved Africans were rescued from three slave ships and brought to Key West. Due to the extremely inhumane conditions that they were subjected to, many passed away upon arrival to Key West and were laid to rest here.

Fall in Key West

During these fall months, you will experience a slight temperature drop, however, humidity is still pretty high. The hurricane season becomes more active later in the season, so if you plan a trip during the fall, be sure to keep your eyes on incoming storms that may grow into a hurricane.

Key West is most definitely not the place you want to be during a hurricane, as there is only one road on and off the island, and evacuating can be an arduous and stressful process.

September has an average high temperature of 89℉ and an average low temperature of 80℉. You can expect at least 11 days of rainfall. September and August tend to be the slowest months of the year and will offer you the most quiet vacation away from the rush of tourists.

However, September is also the month that your vacation is most likely to be canceled due to a hurricane. Hurricane Irma came through Key West in September 2017, and it was an especially devastating storm.

If you are a lover of hops, you have to visit the Key West Brewfest. At this beer-filled event, you will get to experience pool parties, bingo, a belly flop contest, beer pairing dinners, and of course a huge selection of beer.

The event is hosted by the local nonprofit, The Rotary Club of Key West, and proceeds from the event are dedicated to local scholarships and the Take Stock in Children program.

Once October rolls around, the afternoon thunderstorms become less prevalent. You still have to be wary of incoming storms, because hurricane season runs through November. The last hurricane that hit Key West in October was Hurricane Irene. It made landfall on October 15, 1999, as a Category One intensity hurricane with winds at 104 mph.

The precipitation slows down to an average of 7 rainy days in October. There is an average high temperature of 85℉ and an average low temperature of 78℉.

If you want to enjoy a party on your holiday, you can visit Key West’s Fantasy Fest . A 10-day fun-filled festival that was begun in 1979 by Key West locals to attract more tourists to the then-sleepy island. Festivities for this event include pool parties, group bike rides, drag shows, a theater performance, body painting showcases, tons of music performances, an election of Fantasy Fest King and Queen, and so much more.

If you would like to spend your October holiday with some Halloween Spirit, you can take a haunted pub crawl with Bone Island Haunted Pub Crawl put on by Key West Promotions. Key West was originally named “Cayo Hueso”, which translates to “Bone Island”. The haunted pub crawl costs $24.95 per person and includes a two-hour guided pub crawl packed with ghost stories and a souvenir t-shirt.

For the non-drinkers and those there with their families, there is also a Bone Island Ghost Tour . This 90-minute walking tour includes chilling ghost stories at infamous spots including the Key West Cemetary, Original Key West Morgue, Fort Zachery Taylor, and so many more.

Admission for adults costs $17.95, and admission for children costs $15.95. Private tours are available for groups of 10 people or more and tickets cost $22.95 a person regardless of age. For those looking for more of an athletic challenge on their Key West holiday, they can sign up to run in the Southernmost 5K and 10K. The race begins and ends at the beautiful Higgs Beach in Key West .

As the temperature around the country begins to decrease, the amount of tourists traveling to Key West increases. This also means that hotel rates will get higher and wait times at restaurants in Key West will get longer. However, the weather is close to perfect, with an average high temperature of 79℉ and an average low temperature of 72℉ and around 3 days of rainfall.

It is the beginning of dry season so the afternoon thunderstorms will slowly come to a stop. Hurricane season ends in November and it is rare that you will have a strong storm that late in the season. The water temperature is around 79℉, so it’s the perfect opportunity for your water and beach festivities.

There is no shortage of activities to fill your time after you’ve arrived. If you and your family visit the island to celebrate a less traditional Thanksgiving Holiday full of sunny skies and a warm breeze, there are plenty of local restaurant gems to fulfill your Thanksgiving Day food cravings.

There is also a free Thanksgiving meal given out at Mallory Square every year to ensure that everyone has a place to be on the holiday. You can attend the event and have some dinner, or also donate or volunteer to help the locals of Key West serve the community.

I adore Key West. It’s one of my favorite destinations in the US — not only a beautiful island but a guilty pleasure as well, and one that continues to improve with age.

Of course you’re sure to have a blast in Key West at any time of year! There are historic sites to explore, sunset cruises to take, and slices of key lime pie just waiting for you to order them. But it’s no lie that certain times of year in Key West are kinder to your body and your wallet.

I’ve visited the Florida Keys at a few different times of year. Having visited in the peak of July and during the colder months, I can personally attest to the vibe and environment in Key West changing dramatically based on when you visit.

April is the best month to visit Key West. Right in the heart of spring, this is when you’ll find the best temperatures, fewest crowds, and most affordable prices.

Key West is famed for its fun, lively, and bizarre festivals . Some of the best ones are Fantasy Fest in October, Key West Pride in June, Hemingway Days in July, or the “Bight” Before Christmas.

Couples will love visiting Key West during the spring months , in March, April, and May. The winter crowds have dispersed, prices are lower, and the island is a bit quieter and more romantic.

Key West Weather

The weather in Key West is warm year-round, making it a popular winter destination for snowbirds fleeing the cold. While all of the Florida Keys have warm weather, Key West tends to be a little warmer than the others, especially in winter. Key West was the one Key where I didn’t need a cardigan or light jacket at night in February.

As for rain, know that rain in Florida and the Caribbean tends to be brief and intense. You won’t get the all-day drizzles of the Pacific Northwest or New England. Rain doesn’t derail a whole day in Key West; it gives you a reason to get a drink and wait for it to pass.

Key West in Spring

There’s no question — spring is the best time of year to visit Key West. March, April, and May experience warm, sunny weather; tourist crowds have reduced to a more manageable level. Spring is the first time many locals are willing to sunbathe or go swimming.

Humidity in the spring is much less than in the summer months, making it more comfortable to be outside and take advantage of Key West outdoor activities during the day. While there are occasional rainstorms, there is zero risk of hurricanes during the spring, making it a solid weather option for Key West.

Key West in Summer

Summer weather in Key West is very hot and extremely humid, which makes it more difficult to spend time outdoors. Many people in Key West stay inside during the peak heat hours of noon to mid-afternoon. This can make it tough to enjoy outdoor activities. For this reason, evenings are the peak time to be out and about in Key West during the summer.

Most importantly, though, summer in Key West marks the start of hurricane season, which runs from June through November. Most hurricanes don’t hit Key West until late August, though some occasionally hit earlier than that. Hurricane season can be a very risky time to visit Key West. See more on that below.

Summer brings a few major festivals, including Key West Pride and Hemingway Days. Both prices and crowds balloon during these festivals.

Fall also hosts some of Key West’s most popular festivals including the iconic Fantasy Fest before Halloween and the Bight Before Christmas. Prices shoot up for these times of year, particularly Fantasy Fest, and the crowds can be intense.

Key West in Winter

Winter is peak season in Key West and hordes of tourists converge on the island in order to beat the cold up north. This is when you’ll see the highest seasonal prices for flights and hotel accommodations and you can expect there to be booked out activities and long waits for restaurants.

If you decide to visit Key West during the winter, you’ll want to make sure to book your trip well in advance to ensure availability. You may want to book your connecting flight through a less-snowy city — think Orlando rather than Chicago — to ensure that a snowstorm doesn’t disrupt your trip.

Key West weather in the winter is warm and sunny during the day and a bit cooler at night. Expect a few rainy days throughout the season, but overall the days will be sunny.

High Season and Low Season in Key West

High season in Key West is during winter, from November to February. This is when tourists flock to the Florida Keys to evade the cold.

But the absolute peak periods in Key West, when prices and crowds are at their worst, are during the biggest festivals: Hemingway Days in July, Fantasy Fest in October, and Pride in June. The other peak times are major travel holidays — New Year’s Eve, Memorial Day, Labor Day, even Martin Luther King Day and Presidents’ Day.

If you want to book a trip during these times — great! But don’t accidentally book a trip during these times!

Shoulder season in Key West is during the spring, in March, April, and May. This is when the winter crowds have started to slow and the crowds have dissipated a bit.

Some months are better than others when it comes to the best time to visit Key West.

Here’s a rundown of what to expect in Key West each month:

January in Key West

January is in the heart of peak tourist season in Key West. It’s the coldest month of the year, though this is Key West we’re talking about, so it may be. Temperatures range from 65 to 74 degrees Fahrenheit (18 to 23 degrees Celsius). You can expect rainfall approximately 12 days throughout the month, though these storms are brief.

January sees larger crowds and higher prices due to the influx of tourism, so you’ll want to avoid January if you’re looking for the cheapest time to go to Key West.

The Key West Literary Seminar happens annually in January. It’s an awesome event that brings together book lovers and some of the world’s most acclaimed authors. (Did you know that Judy Blume owns a bookstore in Key West ?)

February in Key West

February is the final month of Key West’s peak tourist season, so expect high prices through the end of the month. Temperatures range from about 68 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit (20 to 24 degrees Celsius).

There will only be about five rainy days in February, though it is cloudy for most of the month. Humidity climbs throughout February.

The Key West Food and Wine Festival takes place annually in February and is a popular event for culinary enthusiasts.

March in Key West

March marks the end of peak season in Key West, making it an optimal time for travelers hoping to avoid the crowds. Prices start to come down and the weather is mild and warm. Temperatures in March range from 70 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 25 degrees Celsius).

March boasts warm, dry weather with even more sunny days than in January and February. There will only be about six rainy days, which is perfect for those hoping to take advantage of nice weather!

Head to Key West in March to experience the iconic Conch Shell Blowing Contest, which has been a local tradition for over 50 years.

April in Key West

April is the sunniest and least humid month in Key West, with temperatures ranging from 72 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit (22 to 27 degrees Celsius). With barely any rain, fewer crowds, and affordable prices, April is the perfect month to visit Key West.

April brings the annual Conch Republic Independence Celebration . This wacky festival includes an arts fair, bar crawls, a drag show, and more.

May in Key West

In May, the warm and sunny days continue. Though there is low humidity, the weather starts to get a bit hotter and wetter as spring begins to turn into summer.

Temperatures in Key West in May range from 76 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit (24 to 29 degrees Celsius). There will be up to a week of rainy days throughout the month, but you can expect majority hot and sunny weather.

The Key West Songwriters Festival occurs in Key West in May. This festival hosts over 200 artists annually.

June in Key West

June marks the beginning of summer in Key West — and technically the beginning of hurricane season, though hurricanes often don’t hit this early. With hot, humid temperatures and severe summer storms, June is one of the worse weather months in Key West.

Temperatures range from 79 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit (26 to 31 degrees Celsius) and it’s typically sunny during 75% of daylight hours.

Key West Pride takes place in June, and since Key West is an LGBTQ hub under ordinary circumstances, the celebrations here are legendary. The festival includes pool and beach parties, drag shows, pageants, and more, and happens over the course of five days and nights.

July in Key West

July is Key West’s hottest month and lands travelers in an often stormy part of year. Afternoon thunderstorms and tropical storms are common, and hurricanes become a potential threat during this time of year.

Temperatures range from 80 to 89 degrees Fahrenheit (27 to 32 degrees Celsius), which is perfect if you plan to go swimming and partake in water activities.

July in Key West brings Hemingway Days . With a legendary Ernest Hemingway lookalike contest, a short story competition, a fishing tournament, and so much more, this is one Key West festival you won’t want to miss!

August in Key West

August tends to be one of Key West’s most humid months and is known for bearing the brunt of hurricane season. Make sure your hotels and flights are flexible or refundable if you plan to visit in August, as storms this month can get particularly tough.

Temperatures range from 80 to 89 degrees Fahrenheit (26 to 32 degrees Celsius). Travelers should plan for very hot days and regular (brief but intense) thunderstorms.

The annual Key West Lobsterfest happens in August, and visitors can experience lobster in every way imaginable. The event also hosts live music, street fairs, pub crawls, and much more.

September in Key West

September is the rainiest, stormiest month in Key West. During this month Key West experiences some of the strongest storms of hurricane season.

The weather begins to cool off — by Key West standards, at least — with the coming of fall. Prices remain affordable throughout the shoulder season. Temperatures in September range from 79 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit (26 to 31 degrees Celsius).

Key West Womenfest brings together lesbians from around the world for a colossal celebration of womanhood in September. Key West Brewfest happens over Labor Day Weekend and hosts a number of exciting craft beer events.

October in Key West

October is an unusual month in Key West. Though hurricanes are often at their most fierce at this time of year, October is the month of one of Key West’s biggest festivals: Fantasy Fest! Fantasy Fest attracts thousands of visitors to the island over its 10-day period.

Though October puts visitors at the greatest risk for experiencing a tropical storm or hurricane, October days are typically sunny and dry. Temperatures in October range from 76 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit (24 to 29 degrees Celsius).

November in Key West

November is the most humid month in Key West, though temperatures start to cool down significantly. Marking the end of hurricane season and the migration of tourists coming from up north, November tends to see more expensive prices, larger crowds, and less availability.

Temperatures range from 72 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit (22 to 27 degrees Celsius). There is much less rain in November than earlier in the fall, making it a pleasant month for visiting Key West.

December in Key West

December brings nice weather with warm, sunny days and cooler nights. This is peak tourist season in Key West, so make sure to book your flights and accommodation well in advance.

Temperatures range from 67 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit (19 to 24 degrees Celsius). Expect a lot of humidity and a few rainy days throughout the month.

The Key West Bight Before Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Key West are major events that travelers will definitely want to experience if you plan to visit in December. Of course, with popular events come peak prices.

Hurricane Season in Key West

Hurricane season in Key West technically lasts from June 15 through November 30, but the worst storms tend to hit between August 15 and October 1. The tough thing about hurricane season is that it’s unpredictable — you could have a perfectly fine time, or you could endure a once-in-a-century storm.

It’s important to take hurricane season seriously in the Florida Keys, as some hurricanes have forced mandatory evacuations in the last few years.

I urge you to avoid the Florida Keys during the peak of hurricane season. Why spend the months leading up to your trip wondering if your dream tropical trip will be stormy? Or worse, if you’ll have to evacuate?

Travel insurance is important for every trip — but it’s essential for a trip to Florida during hurricane season. It could save your life or your finances.  I use and recommend World Nomads for trips within the US .

If you do end up in the Florida Keys during a hurricane,  please listen to the authorities and evacuate if they tell you to evacuate . Don’t ride out the storm. Someone could die trying to rescue you.

Best Key West Festivals

Key West is a party town — and they put on some incredible festivals! Travelers from all over the world flock to the island to experience them, some returning year after year. Here are some of the major Key West festivals you’ll want to check out:

Fantasy Fest: Easily the most famous of the Key West festivals, Fantasy Fest occurs over the 10 days leading up to Halloween. Expect 10 days of partying, including street fairs, parades, drag contests, a masquerade costume contest, and more. This event is NOT for kids — this is a sex-positive celebration with many x-rated costumes.

Key West Bight Before Christmas: Beginning on Thanksgiving and running through Christmas, the Bight Before Christmas showcases festive floats and parades, Christmas lights, a tree trimming party, a boat parade, concerts, and more.

New Year’s Eve : Who needs a ball drop? Key West has a Dropping of the Conch Shell at midnight! Similar quirky festivities also happen throughout the island at Bourbon St. Pub and the Historic Seaport.

Hemingway Days Festival: One of the most iconic festivals in Key West, the Hemingway Days Festival draws a huge crowd every July. I attended a few years ago and loved every minute of it. With a Hemingway Lookalike Contest, a short story competition, a marlin fishing tournament, and more, this is one Key West festival you have to experience once in your life!

Key West Pride: Key West is a major LGBTQ destination year-round — so you can imagine how Pride is here! Pride in Key West is absolutely legendary and draws people from all over the country. The celebration includes a week of festivities, ranging from pool parties to street fairs to talent shows, parades, and so much more.

Best Time to Visit Key West with Kids

Is Key West a good destination to visit with kids? Honestly, Key West is more of an adult-oriented destination, but you can definitely have fun with kids here! They’ll especially enjoy the sunset celebration. If you’re visiting the Florida Keys with kids, I recommend spending the bulk of your time in other parts of the Keys, which tend to be more family-friendly.

The best time to visit Key West with kids is during the spring. Whether your kids’ spring break is in March or April, it’s a great excuse to escape the cold, head down to the Keys and soak up the sun with your family. The weather isn’t too hot and humid, and prices are good.

Winter is another great time to check out Key West with the kids — though it tends to be more crowded and expensive. The weather is warm, making for a great escape from cold winter weather in the rest of the country, but it might not quite be swimming weather yet. You know your kids best — they may jump in anyway!

Though summer is a popular time for family vacations, summers in Key West tend to be extremely hot and humid. If your kids can’t handle intense heat and humidity, you may want to consider visiting during a different time of year.

I recommend avoiding hurricane season in Key West, which peaks in September and October. It’s bad enough if you have to evacuate on your own — but with kids? Even scarier.

Cheapest Time to Visit Key West

The cheapest time to visit Key West is from March to May. Spring marks the end of peak tourist season, so crowds begin to dwindle, the weather becomes more pleasant, and prices drop waaaaay down. Flights to Key West from within the US often tend to be inexpensive during these months.

Key West also tends to be inexpensive during the summer and early fall (excluding the major festival dates — Key West Pride, Hemingway Days, and Fantasy Fest, as well as Labor Day weekend), largely due to hurricane season.

If you decide to take advantage of cheap prices during hurricane season, don’t even think of booking a trip without travel insurance! I use and recommend World Nomads .

Overall Best Time to Visit Key West

Though you can have a great time in Key West any time of year, the best time to visit Key West is during the spring months. March, April, and May experience warm, mild weather, crowds of tourists have dissipated, and prices are lower than what you’d pay during the winter.

The best ways to save on a budget trip to Key West

One of America's favorite winter destinations, the southernmost city in the continental USA is a four-mile-long sprawl of rainbow-colored Caribbean homes, shaded verandas, palmetto fronds, open-air bars and resorts with sea views. What Key West is not, however, is cheap.

To enjoy the balmy winter sunshine – Key West sees daytime highs of 77° C, even in January – you'll either need a healthy budget, or a little ingenuity and flexibility. By being selective about where you stay and eat and how you can get around, you can live the high life without a princely holiday fund.

Here are our top suggestions for ways to save on a trip to Key West at any time of year, but be aware that this will make your trip less expensive rather than truly cheap – think of it as "discount Key West" rather than "the Florida Keys on a shoestring."

Visit Key West in the off-season

Unless you are totally set on winter sun, the easiest way to save is to visit Key West when the crowds aren’t here. The fall (September–November) is the low season in Key West, and room rates can drop by 50 percent or more. The hot, storm-prone summer months also see lower prices, and you'll find decent discounts in April and May after the winter crowds thin out.

With fewer people, cheaper hotel rooms and plenty of sun, what’s not to love about the low season in the Florida Keys? Hurricanes. Tropical storms in the Gulf of Mexico blow through regularly from June to the end of October; they don't always make landfall, but Hurricane Irma scored a direct hit on Key West in September 2017, causing widespread devastation.

Eat out on the cheap

Dining out can be a pricey business in Key West. Entrées at a mid-range restaurant run in the $16-25 range, but you can skirt around this cost by self-catering and relying on local grocery stores, or grabbing takeout Cuban sandwiches ($5–8) and other similarly basic meals at local cafes and counter-service spots, which can be found throughout Old Town. Good picnic spots for self-caterers include Mallory Square , Fort Zachary Taylor State Park and Sonny McCoy Indigenous Park at 1801 White St.

How to get around the Florida Keys

Skip the rental car in Key West

One cost that is completely optional in Key West is a rental car. Flights run directly to Key West International Airport, a $9–20 taxi ride from the center, and once you’re in Old Town, you can easily get about on foot or by bicycle or bus. It's even cheaper to take the bus from Miami; a ticket on a Greyhound or  Flix will cost around $13-25.

For easy exploring, bikes can be rented from companies such as Eaton Bikes for around $18 per day, which is well worth it for the convenience of being able to get across town quickly without having to worry about parking. Walking isn't too onerous either, considering Key West's small size, though it can be a draining ordeal in the hot summer months. There's also a moderately useful local bus service – fares start at $2 one-way.

Seek out low-cost activities on Key West

Key West attractions don't all come with a painful entry fee. Fort Zachary Taylor State Park charges a modest $2.50/6.50 admission fee for each pedestrian/vehicle, and for that price you get the run of a historic fortress and access to one of the best beaches in the Keys.

Nearby is the free Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center, a natural history museum providing a window onto the unique natural environment of South Florida. You can view the underwater side of that world for just the cost of renting a mask and snorkel at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. If it's sun and sand you crave, sandy Higgs Beach , an artificial beach at the end of Reynolds St, is one of the few open-to-all public beaches in the Keys.

Catch a pocket-friendly show at Mallory Square 

At sunset, buskers, fire-eaters, jugglers and acrobats gather in Mallory Square for an evening carnival that has entertained generations of Key West tourists. There’s no admission fee, but the entertainers live on tips, so this isn’t technically free, but it's still one of Key West's cheaper evening experiences.

If you like watching people dress up in amazing costumes of beautiful glitter faeries, saucy superheroes and just about anything else you can imagine, we recommend visiting during the dreamlike bacchanalia of Fantasy Fest  – costs do go up a bit during the festival but watching the parades is free.

Explore the Old Town for free

Key West's Old Town is full of fascinating lanes and alleyways lined by a veritable catalog of old Caribbean architecture and historical homes, many painted in attractive pastel tones. No one will charge you for walking around and taking pictures, and you can download a free walking tour with background information on sights of historical and cultural interest. 

Visit free attractions in the heart of Key West

Even the middle of old Key West has its share of free things to do . Keep an eye out for the entrance to West Martello Tower , a lush, free-to-visit garden planted amidst ruined Civil War-era brickwork and maintained by the Key West Garden Club.

In the middle of town, the Key West Cemetery , a romantically moldering necropolis that houses graves belonging to some of the oldest families on the island, is also free to explore. Duval St is the main nightlife strip in the Keys, and while the bars may not be free, the people-watching is.

Be flexible about where you stay in Key West

Sure, the Key West dream is a room overlooking the water, but you'll pay for the privilege. Staying in the backstreets, and choosing guesthouses and B&Bs over hotels and motels can bring savings. Hotels on the east side of the island (ie not Old Town) tend to be cheaper, but you’ll either have to pay for taxis or use a hotel shuttle service or rental bike if you want to get to the main drag of Duval St.

Booking far in advance can sometimes bring savings, but you’ll still find many rooms topping $200 per night, even in low season. A more reliable method of slashing costs is staying in a property with shared bathrooms; the Key West Bed & Breakfast is a reliable choice. 

Day trip to Key West from another island

Another way to sleep cheaply on a trip to Key West is to not sleep on Key West at all. There are dozens of other islands in the Florida Keys, and accommodation is cheaper on all of them, although remember that these are relative savings. Key West Transit's Lower Keys Shuttle and other local buses services provide inexpensive connections between Key West and other islands.

You’ll find the greatest variety of hotels and motels on Marathon (a one hour drive away) and Big Pine Key (45 minutes away). Another convenient option is the not-too-expensive Looe Key Dive Center , about 40 minutes away from Key West. The obvious disadvantage is that you’ll need to arrange transportation back to your lodging if you’re planning on drinking in Key West in the evening.

Pitch a tent at a nearby campsite

The cheapest accommodation option of all is camping, although in practice this often means RV sites rather than peaceful tent sites. There are no campsites on Key West itself, but there are a few tent and RV sites on next-door Stock Island, including Leo's Campground .

Sugarloaf Key has the southernmost KOA Campground in the country and you'll find decent tent sites from as little as $50 per night at Bahia Honda State Park , on Big Pine Key.   

Daily costs

The main reason for the high cost of living in the Florida Keys is the archipelago's distance from just about everything (the largest nearby major metropolitan area is Miami, still three hours away by road, even in good traffic). Because Key West is both a tourism hotspot and the last island in the chain, the already high costs of the Keys are exacerbated here.

• Cuban sandwich: $8.50–10
• Dinner for two: $40–90

You can always be sure that you will have an excellent time at the Florida popular destination, Key West! Known not only for its tropical weather, swaying palm trees, and gorgeous beaches but also its delectable key lime pie!

It's one of the best places for a “beachy” road trip for snowbirds or the whole family. with the best places to see and experience in the Keys.

The following is my guide to the best time of year to visit Key West. But since “best” means different things to different people, I've broken it down by season. That way you can judge for yourself if the best is peak season, cheaper months, hotter months, or so on.

Peak Season / Shoulder Season in Key West

Generally speaking, the best time to see Key West is during its high season which occurs from March to May. March is the busiest month because the weather is perfect. Most days stay around 75 degrees, and there is low humidity.

However, you will see higher rates for hotel rooms and campsites, as well as flight costs, during this time of year.

April then has a small dip in the crowds, making May an excellent shoulder season to visit. The weather is still nice, and fewer crowds to share space with.

Visiting in February, toward the end of the month, is also an excellent time to visit, There are fewer crowds and great deals that you can find. There is also less precipitation during February, and you are on the cusp of March's “best weather.”

Spring Break

Another busy time in Key West is spring break. The tropical climate promises temperate weather with gorgeous ocean views. It is no surprise that college kids and families like to come during this time of year.

Schools have different spring breaks and it changes from year to year, so I can't say exactly when to avoid those crowds.

Your best bet during spring break is to avoid the week before and the week after Easter. Not all schools and universities plan their spring break around the Easter holiday, but many do.

You can also check out some of the Florida University college breaks to see when they are having their time off. But do note that this location attracts many students from outside of Florida as well.

Rainy Season

The rainy season in Key West lasts from May – October. If you visit the area during that time, there's a good possibility of lots of showers and thunderstorms. One nice thing about not visiting during peak time is that you will have fewer crowds to contend with.

But don't equate rain to cold! Surprisingly, the rainy season is also the warmest season in Key West. The temperature usually ranges from 75 to 90 degrees.

Hurricane Season

Hurricane season in the region lasts from June – November, with September being the month when tropical storms hit most often. That means you can probably score cheap rates on travel, but you may have to cancel your plans should a hurricane occur.

Some people think this is a great time to visit because the risk of inclement weather is worth the least amount of visitors.

Best Time to Travel to Key West

Just because there is a peak season when visiting the Florida Keys, does not mean that is the only time you should go. Each season brings its own activities, each offering a good time. The following is my guide to excellent things to see and do in Key West during every part of the year!

Best time to travel to Key West might be Spring: March – May

Many folks love getting down south during the spring. It is definitely the most popular time to visit Key West!

While temperatures and humidity levels are near perfect, you can bet that your visit will cost a little more.

Water-related activities hit a high during the spring season. If you love any and all water sports, this may be your ideal time to visit.

These three winter months are the coldest months of the year in Key West. Temperatures in January, the coldest month of the year, can be anywhere from an average low of 64 degrees and an average high of 76 degrees.

Many people have a great time in Key West in “winter” because they come from places that are a whole lot chillier. They even have a name for these people, which I'm sure you're familiar with: Snowbirds!

I have an RV motor home I bought from a friend for a good (I think) price. Now should I split to Florida or ftay around here (Phoenix?) The Best Time to Visit Florida for Fewer Crowds, Better Weather, and Travel Deals

Whether you want to lounge on the beach, hit the theme parks, or explore the Sunshine State's cities and small towns, these are the best times to visit Florida.

Aside from beaches, theme parks, and nonstop sunshine, one of Florida's biggest draws is that there's never a bad time to visit. The weather is warm all year round, so you'll never have your plans dashed by a snowstorm or need to pack a winter coat.

Florida does, however, have weather concerns of other types, from blazingly hot summers to the dreaded hurricane season. There are also crowds to account for, as well as fluctuating prices on travel essentials like hotels and flights. The tourist seasons in Florida vary by destination, but in general, North Florida's popularity peaks in summer and tapers off in winter, while South Florida hits its peak in winter and is less popular during the summer months. Throughout the state, the fall and late spring (once spring break ends) are typically known as shoulder seasons.

The best time to visit Florida depends on your specific needs — the purpose of your trip, plus your itinerary, budget, and more — but the bottom line is that the Florida vacation of your dreams is within reach, as long as you plan accordingly.

Best Times to Visit Florida for Smaller Crowds

Avoiding the crowds in Florida is a tall order. It's a desirable place to be, and visitors flock to the state all year round. However, some months are quieter than others. In South Florida, for example, high temperatures and storm risk make the summer months the least busy. At Orlando's theme parks and many of the state's best beaches , though, you'll find thousands of families out and about in the summer. For these family-friendly destinations, a visit when school is in session will likely offer the smallest crowds.

You may not be able to avoid all other tourists on your visit to Florida, but you can do yourself a favor by traveling outside the peak periods. Panama City Beach at spring break, the Florida Keys during lobster-hunting "mini season," and St. Augustine around Christmastime are all hyper-popular itineraries that the crowd-averse may want to skip.

Visitors can also find thinner crowds at any time by visiting under-the-radar destinations instead of the state's well-known spots. Swapping the Everglades for a state park or South Beach for Santa Rosa Island can help you enjoy Florida's famous sun and sights with plenty of elbow room.

Best Times to Visit Florida for Good Weather

Sunny skies and warm weather are two of the main factors that draw tourists to Florida, and no matter when you visit, you're likely to find at least a bit of each. Conditions do vary, though, depending on the time of year and the destination. In Florida's subtropical south, winter — roughly November to April — offers the best weather, with temperatures generally topping out at around 80 degrees. Further north, spring and fall can be the nicest seasons. (In the Panhandle's Walton County , for instance, temperatures in these months tend to hover in the 70s, making for pleasant conditions on land and in the water.)

Florida's summers, on the other hand, are notoriously hot — especially inland, where there's no sea breeze to keep things cool(ish). Most of the state sees both high temperatures and high humidity at this time of year, and with even ocean temperatures passing 90 degrees in recent summers, there's no guarantee that a swim will cool you down. Summer also overlaps with Atlantic hurricane season, which stretches from June to November, and it's known for near-daily pop-up storms, too. If you do choose to visit Florida in the summer, be sure to pack both an umbrella and plenty of sunscreen and drinking water.

Best Times to Visit Florida for Lower Prices

The best time to visit Florida for travel deals and lower prices depends on your destination. If you're heading to the beaches or theme parks, summer is a peak season and you might be hard-pressed to find available rooms, much less a good deal.

But some places in Florida simmer down during the summer months. Take Palm Beach , for example: The island is booming from November through April, but during the off-season (May through October, when the snowbirds head home and the social set jets to the Hamptons), you'll find a glimmer of the quiet town it once was. This is also when nightly hotel rates are usually slashed to a fraction of their extravagant high-season prices. Overall, off-season is the best time to score great deals at Florida's best resorts no matter the destination.

The cheapest months to fly to Florida are typically May (except for Memorial Day weekend) and September. You can score great deals if you plan ahead and aim for just outside your destination's peak season.

Best Times to Visit Miami

What fun-loving person can resist a visit to Miami ? The Magic City is buzzy, sultry, and unapologetically vibrant. Go in the spring to find fewer crowds, more pleasant temperatures, and plenty of events (like Ultra Music Festival and Formula 1's Miami Grand Prix ), or plan a summer trip if you want to experience Miami at its least crowded — and, yes, sizzle on South Beach like a fresh-cooked tostón.

Winter is a fabulous time to visit Miami — temperatures are mild and humidity is lower — but lots of other people think so, too, so you'll have crowds and peak hotel pricing to contend with. Still, it's arguably worth it to attend Art Basel or a Miami Heat game.

If you like living the high life, we'll let you in on an insider secret: Despite its sweltering weather, August is arguably the best month to visit Miami. August is the only time when Miami's Spa Months , Restaurant Months , and Hotel Months all overlap, so you can treat yourself to the city's best dining, lodging, and pampering at a fraction of the usual cost.

Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys

The Florida Keys are one of the best places to visit in Florida, a subtropical delight with nice weather year round. But beware of peak tourist season, which begins right after Christmas and lasts until about May. It's beautiful this time of year — there's very little rain, and temperatures are usually in the 70s — but that pleasant environment comes with high prices and large crowds.

Those crowds and prices taper off from May through September, and temperatures typically remain manageable, with summer highs of around 90 degrees. Hurricane season, though, can put a damper on an off-season visit — storms are most common in the Keys in August, September, and October. That said, if you're willing to accept some storm risk and humidity, summer can yield excellent deals.

For extra fun in the Keys, plan your visit to coincide with a festival like the Original Marathon Seafood Festival (March), the 7 Mile Bridge Run (April), the Key Lime Festival (June/July), Hemingway Days (July), the Key West Brewfest (September), or Fantasy Fest (October).

Best Times to Visit Florida's Theme Parks

Summer is the off-season for most of Florida, due to the extra-hot weather and potential for storms, but beach towns and theme parks are the exception to the rule.

Disney World is a popular destination year round; there's nary a day when you won't encounter crowds and long lines at this beloved resort. But if you want a month that's slightly less crowded than the others, try January (after the holiday rush), February, or September (when kids are back in school and Halloween festivities haven't quite kicked off).

It may be convenient for families, but visiting the theme parks during summer break guarantees super-long lines in super-hot weather. Visiting around any holiday is fun thanks to seasonal park decor, but it also means dense crowds — you're not the only one who'll be clamoring for a taste of the holiday spirit. Once Christmas and New Year crowds dissipate, though, a Goldilocks window begins, since winter is the best time to visit Disney World for good weather.

Worst Times to Visit Florida

The Sunshine State contains such a wide variety of destinations that it's almost impossible to declare one season as Florida's worst. But, unless you're a party-hopping college student, there is one time that you'll likely want to avoid: spring break.

A whopping 7.3 million travelers passed through the Orlando airport during the 2023 spring break season — that's early March through the middle of April — and countless more arrive in the state each spring through other airports and by car. Florida boasts beautiful weather in the springtime, and many families, of course, have no option but to travel when their school schedules allow. If you are flexible, though, choosing a different window will likely help you save money and avoid wall-to-wall crowds.

Summer is a risky time to visit, since the weather tends to be muggy at best. Traveling during this off-season can net you good deals, but you'll want to come prepared for the heat and the storms that a Florida summer can bring.

Your road trip guide to the Florida Keys

One of the best state road trips in America has to be the sun-kissed drive from Key Largo to Key West in the Florida Keys. This road, known as the Florida Keys Overseas Highway, takes you through a 125-mile island chain that begins just south of Miami. It hopscotches over 42 bridges and five islands, and has turquoise waters stretching in every direction into the Atlantic Ocean, Florida Bay and Gulf of Mexico.

So if you're looking for the perfect Atlantic Coast road trip or cheap beach vacation , look no further than this road trip guide from Key Largo to Key West. And if you'd rather travel from Key West to Key Largo, rest easy—the route works either way. There are shuttles that run from Key Largo to Key West, but keep in mind, you'd be missing out on all the fun in between.

Mile marker: 108–90

The first of the Florida Keys you'll hit after driving about an hour south from Miami en route from Key Largo to Key West is, well, Key Largo. Often referred to as the Dive Capital of the World, Key Largo includes one must-see stop: John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (MM 102.5), the first underwater preserve in the United States.

Experienced and novice snorkelers and SCUBA divers will be enthralled by the teeming marine life that lives just below the water's surface, like parrot fish, barracudas and sea turtles. More experienced divers enjoy exploring the USS Spiegel Grove, one of the largest ships ever intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef where pretty fish can thrive.

Back on dry land, travelers can wander nearly six miles of trails at Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, home to more than 80 species of plants and animals. You can also peruse the work of local artists at myriad galleries.

Best beach: Cannon Beach, found within John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, has shallow waters that are perfect for wading. You may even spot cannons and anchors on the beach that remain from a 1715 Spanish shipwreck.

Where to eat: Dig into the catch of the day at The Fish House, Key Largo Conch House or Snook's Bayside Restaurant & Grand Tiki Bar, some of the best traditional restaurants in the area. If you'd rather turf than surf, check out Jimmy Johnson's Big Chill.

Where to stay: If you can't get enough of the underwater world, stay at Jules' Undersea Lodge , the world's first underwater hotel. If you'd rather keep dry, try the adults-only Bungalows Key Largo .

Mile marker: 90–63

Next up en route from Key Largo to Key West is the fisherman's paradise known as Islamorada. Considered the Sport Fishing Capital of the World, it's where backcountry sport fishing and saltwater fly-fishing got their start. Countless seasoned boat captains are ready for hire to take you out to catch the wahoo, marlin, mahi-mahi and tuna that swim in these waters.

There's an even quirkier way to interact with fish here: hand-feeding the tarpon off the docks of Robbie's Marina (MM 77.5). Since 1976, countless Keys visitors have stopped to feed them, and more than 100 kinds of fish gather at the docks for their daily snacks. Feeding the fishies there is so popular, it's been named the No. 1 activity in all the Florida Keys.

Islamorada is also a terrific spot to kitesurf, stand-up paddleboard, go for a hike or take a bicycle ride. Stop by the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary, where injured or displaced birdies now make their homes. Or visit the History of Diving Museum, which boasts one of the world's largest collections of diving helmets.

Best beach: Anne's Beach is popular with families (and dogs) because of its shallow waters and lack of waves. Take a walk along the boardwalk or enjoy a picnic at one of the covered tables.

Where to eat: For a quintessential casual Florida Keys meal, go to the Hungry Tarpon. If you want more elegant fare, make reservations at Chef Michael's for creatively inspired local dishes.

Where to stay: When it's time to lay your head for the night, check in to one of the new oceanfront suites at Cheeca Lodge & Spa , or your own cottage at The Moorings Village & Spa .

Mile marker: 63–40

Marathon is the island chain's top boating destination—and for good reason. The area boasts nearly 2,400 boat slips and plenty of facilities to accommodate sailors passing through. But you don't need your own boat to enjoy Marathon and its waters.

For a truly different experience, hop on over to Cruisin' Tikis and have a floating tiki bar adventure. Sunset, mangrove and harbor cruises are all available, as is a swim-stop cruise for a chance to jump into the water.

While you're here, you should also visit Pigeon Key, an island that is accessible by boat, trolley or walking the 2.2-mile Old Seven Mile Bridge. It has a museum to explore, either on a guided tour or on your own. The Bridge is open for walking, running, bicycling, rollerblading and, of course, watching the killer sunrises and sunsets.

Best beach: Sombrero Beach is one of the prettiest beaches in the Florida Keys—not to mention one of the best beaches in Florida . And it's not just popular with humans; sea turtles nest here between April and October.

Where to eat: For any meal, stop by Castaway, which has been serving guests for more than 70 years. Or make a night of it at Hide Away Café, which has an extensive wine list.

Where to stay: The Faro Blanco Resort & Yacht Club is set on the waterfront and gives you a taste of marina life. Lime Tree Bay Resort on Long Key has spacious townhomes for rent.

The Lower Keys

Mile marker: 40–4

After crossing the Old Seven Mile Bridge out of Marathon, you'll find yourself in the Lower Keys, where natural habitats and wildlife refuges thrive. It's no wonder this part of the Florida Keys is known as the Natural Keys. You might even want to consider taking an electric vehicle on this road trip so you don't disturb the animals.

Your best chance to spot a native Key deer, a subspecies of the Virginia white-tailed deer that somehow made its way south, may be in the National Key Deer Refuge, comprised of 9,200 acres stretching from Bahia Honda Key to Sugarloaf Key on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico. More than 20 endangered and threatened plant and animal species can be found within the refuge. Take a quiet walk at dusk or dawn for your best chance to glimpse a Key deer, or join a ranger-led tour to learn more about the area.

Aside from all the eco-friendly fun, Stock Island is well worth a stop. Their maritime history goes back generations, and the marina is filled with shrimping and fishing boats. Artists have been flocking to Stock Island, too, and share their works in galleries dotted across the small island.

Best beach: The shallow, clear water and white sand at Calusa Beach make it a locals' favorite. The beach is a perfect spot for snorkeling too.

Where to eat: In addition to the freshest of seafood, Big Pine Rooster serves up ribs and a special-recipe meatloaf. Or sip like the locals at No Name Pub, located on Big Pine Key.

Where to stay: Consider the waterfront Sugarloaf Lodge , stay in an Airstream at Big Pine Key Resort  or pop a tent on one of the reserved campsites at Bahia Honda State Park.

Mile marker: 4–0

You've made it to the end! Closer to Cuba than Miami, Key West is known for its nightly sunset celebrations, party atmosphere and laissez-faire vibe, but it's really so much more.

If you're a writer or bookworm, you'll certainly want to make plans to visit the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, where you should keep an eye out for the famous six-toed cats. Then wander through Key West's Bahama Village, a 12-block area of historic homes and restaurants.

Consider a day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park, about 70 miles west of Key West in the Gulf of Mexico, where you'll find some hidden gems . The island, accessible by boat or seaplane, is popular for snorkeling and feeling like you're on your own private island, not to mention touring the Civil War–era fort.

Best beach: Fort Zachary Taylor Beach—or Fort Zach, as locals call it—predates the Civil War and boasts the island's very best sandy stretch.

Where to eat: No visit to Key West is complete without a meal at Blue Heaven, where you can dine with wandering roosters for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Or snag a spot on the tiny balcony at Santiago's Bodega for tapas and flowing wine.

Where to stay: The boutique Gardens Hotel , the adults-only Kimpton Hotels Ridley House  or the new Capitana Key West , to name a few. Wherever you stay, you're sure to find your place in Key West, and it's likely you'll follow so many others' lead and start planning your return visit before you even leave.

Art and history in the Florida Keys

Road-tripping from Key Largo to Key West, it's easy to appreciate all the natural beauty. That said, the Keys aren't just a terrific destination for eco-travelers, but artists and history buffs too.

It's easy for artists to find inspiration throughout the Florida Keys. Fortunately for road-trippers, there are many spots to stop and admire their work. One of the largest artists' communities in the Florida Keys is Stock Island in the Lower Keys, just about three miles from the commercial area of Key West. What was once a shrimping boat marina is now a blend of fishermen and painters, sculptors and other artisans who have created an energetic and supportive community.

For history buffs, in addition to Pigeon Key in Marathon and the Civil War–era Fort Jefferson in Dry Tortugas National Park, other must-stops in Key West include the Audubon House & Tropical Gardens, Harry S. Truman Little White House and the Southernmost Point in the continental United States.

Planning your Florida Keys road trip

Now that you're inspired to hit the road, it's time to start planning. After budgeting for a road trip , your next step is to decide whether you will travel south from Key Largo to Key West, or north from Key West to Key Largo. Or maybe you'll opt for a roundtrip.

If you're starting off in Key Largo, it's important to note that the Florida Keys Overseas Highway begins at the Miami-Dade/Monroe County line. So if you're flying to Florida, Miami International Airport (MIA) is the way to go. If you begin in Key West, the airport (EYW) is on the island.
