THE CHER SHOW U.K./Ireland Tour to Kick Off in April 2022
The tour will kick off at Curve Leicester on April 15, 2022, before moving on to a year of additional dates to be announced.
The Tony Award-winning musical The Cher Show is set to hit the road on a 2022 tour crossing the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Arlene Phillips will direct the all-new production, which will feature choreography from Strictly Come Dancing star Oti Mabuse and costumes by Gabriella Slade.
The Cher Show, featuring a book by Tony Award winner Rick Elice and direction by Tony Award nominee Jason Moore , opened on Broadway on Monday, December 3, 2018 at Broadway's Neil Simon Theatre. It closed after almost 300 performances on August 18, 2019.
The Cher Show received two 2019 Tony Awards including Stephanie J. Block for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role and Bob Mackie for Best Costume Design of a Musical.
For six straight decades, only one unstoppable force has flat-out dominated popular culture - breaking down barriers, pushing boundaries, and letting nothing and no one stand in her way. The Cher Show is her story.
The Cher Show is 35 smash hits, six decades of stardom, two rock-star husbands, a Grammy, an Oscar, an Emmy, and enough spangly gowns to cause a sequins shortage, all in one unabashedly fabulous musical.

The Cher Show celebrates 100th performance of 2022/2023 UK Tour
By Yasmin Elkilany First Published 15 August 2022, Last Updated 24 August 2022
The Cher Show celebrated their 100th performance on 13 August 2022 at Milton Keynes Theatre . With book by Tony and Olivier Award-winning Rick Elice, direction by Arlene Phillips, choreography by Oti Mabuse and costume design by Gabriella Slade, the UK & Ireland Tour opened on 15 April 2022 and will continue through to 1 April 2023.
From a young child with big dreams, the shy daughter of an Armenian-American truck driver, to the dizzying heights of global stardom, The Cher Show tells the incredible story of Cher’s meteoric rise to fame. Cher takes the audience by the hand and introduces them to the influential people in her life, from her mother and Sonny Bono, to fashion designer and costumier Bob Mackie. It shows how she battled the men who underestimated her, fought the conventions and, above all, was a trailblazer for independence. The musical is packed with 35 of her biggest hits, including ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’, ‘I Got You Babe’, ‘Strong Enough’, ‘The Shoop Shoop Song’ and ‘Believe’.
With over 100 million record sales, an Academy Award, an Emmy, a Grammy, three Golden Globes and an award from The Council of Fashion Designers of America, Cher has influenced popular culture more than most. Her on-screen career started in 1971 with her weekly television show that attracted 30 million viewers a week, and went on to include starring roles in iconic films from Moonstruck, for which she won the Oscar for Best Actress, to Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!, which prompted the New York Magazine to realise “every single movie—no matter how flawless—would be infinitely better if it included Cher.”
Her ‘Farewell Tour’ became the highest grossing music tour in history – in true Cher fashion, she followed up her ‘Farewell Tour’ with two further sell-out, worldwide arena tours. She is the only artist in history to have a number one hit on the Billboard chart for six consecutive decades; an achievement that caused Vogue to deem her “eternally relevant and the ruler of outré reinvention”. She became known as the Queen of Reinvention.

Cher, Ozzy Osbourne and A Tribe Called Quest among 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees
Cher finally recognised 60 years after her first recordings, while Mary J Blige, Peter Frampton and Dave Matthews Band are among the other inductees
Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, Mary J Blige and A Tribe Called Quest are among the stars to be added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year – many of them rather overdue.
Artists can be added to the US institution 25 years after their first recording, but Cher – who once described her snub by the Hall as “kind of rude” – has had to wait until 60 years after her first releases with Sonny & Cher to be included.
Peter Frampton is another artist who has had a long wait. After debuting in 1972, and scoring one of the best-selling albums of the 1970s in the US with Frampton Comes Alive!, the 74-year-old British artist has eventually been added this year.
Osbourne had already been inducted as a member of Black Sabbath, but now has a second entry acknowledging a solo career that began with 1980 album Blizzard of Ozz. A Tribe Called Quest, one of the foundational groups in hip-hop, are acknowledged 34 years on from their debut album, while Blige, who has topped the US album chart four times, is included after 32 years.
Other inductees include Dave Matthews Band, who have enjoyed a multiplatinum-selling career that began in 1994, racking up seven No 1 albums in a row between 1998 and 2018.
I Want to Know What Love Is hitmakers Foreigner have also been added, acknowledging a career that has resulted in almost 40m album sales in the US. Rounding out the 2024 inductees are the funk, disco and pop band Kool & the Gang. Best known for hits such as Get Down on It and the US No 1 Celebration, they began back in 1969 but continue to tour and released their latest album in 2023.
The Hall’s musical excellence award is this year given to Jimmy Buffett , who died in September 2023; MC5, whose guitarist and bandleader Wayne Kramer died in February; and soul icons Dionne Warwick and Norman Whitfield. The musical influence award is given to three blues artists: American singer Big Mama Thornton, plus British performers Alexis Korner and John Mayall.
The Ahmet Ertegun award is given to Suzanne de Passe, a media mogul who rose through the ranks at Motown Records to become president of its film and TV arm, before spinning it off into a successful production company under her own name.
The year’s diverse range – by Rock Hall standards – of inductees comes as the Hall attempts to broaden its canon of artists. Last year, it was calculated that fewer than 10% of inductees have been women since the awards began in 1986.
“The Rock Hall’s canon-making doesn’t just reek of sexist gatekeeping, but also purposeful ignorance and hostility,” Courtney Love wrote in a 2023 Guardian op-ed. “If so few women are being inducted into the Rock Hall, then the nominating committee is broken. If so few Black artists, so few women of colour, are being inducted, then the voting process needs to be overhauled.”
In 2010, Cher described the snub of Sonny & Cher as “kind of rude … We influenced a generation, and it’s like: what more do you want?” After scoring era-defining hits such as I Got You Babe, Cher went on to a solo career that flourished through a series of reinventions, including her embrace of Europop in 1998 with global hit Believe. Aged 77, she continues to release new music, with a Christmas album coming out in 2023.
Meanwhile, the Hall of Fame’s accompanying museum in Cleveland is planning a $135m expansion. Announced in 2023 and with an estimated completion date of early 2026, it will increase the museum’s size by a third.

Cher to be inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame despite vowing to boycott ceremony
Share this with
Music legend Cher is in for a shock after being announced as an inductee to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame later this year – just months after slamming her decades-long snub.
It’s hard to believe the hitmaker hasn’t scooped up most music honours following a flourishing career, which kicked off in the 1960s.
Over her time she has created Grammy-winning hits, countless number ones , and iconic collaborations with the likes of her late partner Sonny Bono and mega stars such as Sir Elton John .
Despite the 77-year-old Believe singer comfortably achieving icon status, there has been a notable omission from her many accolades after consistently failing to make the ballot to feature in the legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame since she first became eligible in 1991. But all that has changed this year.
During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show last year, Cher proclaimed to the shocked presenter that even with her success she’s still not in the Hall of Fame and ‘wouldn’t be in it now’ even for ‘a million dollars.’
Only months after her rant, however, Cher seems to have been proven wrong. At the end of the American Idol episode on Sunday, host Ryan Seacrest and superstar judge Lionel Ritchie announced the Class of 2024, headlined by the one and only Cher.
The Hall of Fame, established in 1983, boasts music icons such as Aretha Franklin, Billy Joel and Elvis Presley, to name a few. In order to qualify to enter the Cleveland-based institution, artists (solo or pop groups) must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years ago – a yardstick the I Got You Babe singer has well surpassed.
Whether she receives a handsome payout or will stay true to her boycotting vow remains to be seen, but she joins a star-studded line-up of inductees.
This includes Mary J Blige, 53, Ozzy Osbourne ( previously inducted as a member of Black Sabbath ), 75, Dionne Warwick, 83, British artist Peter Frampton, 74 and Kool and the Gang. Needless to say, many in this year’s Performer’s class are long overdue their flowers.
In December, following the success of her Christmas number one DJ Play A Christmas Song, Cher told Clarkson, 41, and an aghast audience: ‘You know what, I wouldn’t be in it [Hall of Fame] now if they gave me a million dollars.’
After the Stronger artist posed she might change her mind, Cher said: ‘I’m never going to change my mind and they can just go you-know-what themselves.’
Over her career, Cher has secured a Grammy award for her 2001 dance hit Love One Another, an Emmy award for her 2003 special Cher – The Farewell Tour and an Oscar for best actress in 1988 for her starring role in Moonstruck. All this makes her just a Tony award away from the coveted Hollywood quartet – the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards.)
Osbourne has already celebrated his entry as an individual artist into the Hall of Fame in an interview with Billboard, reflecting that it ‘feels big.’
‘I’m more than honoured,’ he continued to the publication. ‘With every new music venture there’s always a certain amount of surprise that comes when you see the fans embrace it, because no one wants to make a record and have it flop,’ Ozzy continued, reflecting upon his solo career.
‘I feel like I was invited to a party in 1980, and it hasn’t stopped. Not bad for a guy who was fired from his last band.’
Much like Cher, the Patient Number 9 singer has also previously hit out against the Hall of Fame when Black Sabbath was originally nominated in 1999. In an open letter to the institution, he told them to ‘save the ink’ and ‘forget about us’ due to the lack of fan voting involvement. Black Sabbath were eventually inducted in 2006.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on October 19, 2024.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2024 inductees include Peter Frampton, Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, Mary J. Blige
A fter failing to even be nominated in previous years, Cher, Peter Frampton, Foreigner, Ozzy Osbourne and Kool & The Gang will all be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2024, alongside repeat nominees Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews Band and hip-hop innovators A Tribe Called Quest.
In a novel move, Frampton encouraged concertgoers to vote for him during his April 14 show at The Shell in San Diego by having the QR code for the ballot projected onto the large video screen behind him on stage.
Five other artists who were also on the ballot for the first time this year did not earn enough votes to be inducted, specifically, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz, Sadé, Mariah Carey and Sinéad O’Connor, who died last July. Also failing to make the cut for induction were two repeat nominees — Jane’s Addiction and the hip-hop duo Erik B. & Rakim.
This year’s inductees were announced during Sunday night’s telecast of “American Idol” by Lionel Richie, a 2022 hall inductee, and show host Ryan Seacrest. The list of 2024 honorees also includes six artists who will receive the hall’s Musical Excellence and Musical Influence awards, two categories that are chosen by the hall’s in-house committees.
The 2024 Musical Excellence Award honorees include Dionne Warwick, Norman Whitfield, Jimmy Buffett (who died last September from cancer) and the pioneering Detroit proto-punk-rock band MC5, whose leader, Wayne Kramer, died of cancer Feb. 2. The final iteration of the group, which included San Diego guitarist Stevie Salas playing alongside fellow guitarist Kramer, toured in 2022.
MC5 had been nominated for induction in six previous years but did not earn enough votes to gain induction. Buffett, whose final concert of his career with his Coral Reefer Band took place last May at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium, was never nominated.
This year’s Musical Influence Award honorees include England’s John Mayall and the late Alexis Korner, who in the 1960s jointly spearheaded the blues boom in the UK that fueled the launching of such bands as the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Fleetwood Mac and Cream. At 90, Mayall appears to be the oldest of this year’s hall honorees.
The third 2024 Musical Influence Award honoree is the late Big Mama Thornton, whose galvanizing recordings of the songs “Hound Dog” and “Ball and Chain” greatly influenced the subsequent versions of those songs by, respectively, Elvis Presley and Janis Joplin.
Artists become eligible for nomination 25 years after the release of their first recording and are honored for their “originality, impact and influence.” Ballots are cast by the hall’s more than 1,000 voting members, which include previous inductees and an array of music industry professionals, including this writer.
In 2013, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame introduced it “fan vote,” in which the top five nominees that fans vote online for are submitted as one official ballot that is counted with the rest of the Voting Committee’s. The quantitative impact of the fans’ choices is minimal — accounting for about 0.3 percent of the total — but creates a fair amount of buzz.
This year’s two top fan-vote earners are Dave Matthews Band (with 586,745 votes) and Frampton, with 529,077. This year’s online fan voting was supposed to continue until Friday, but instead concluded April 15.
The hall’s final 2024 honoree, powerhouse music, film and TV industry executive Suzanne de Passe, will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award. It is named after the co-founder of Atlantic Records.
The announcement of this year’s inductees comes as several of them are battling serious medical conditions.
Frampton, 73, has an autoimmune disease called inclusion body myositis that affects his muscle control and sense of balance. He was diagnosed with the disease in 2019, after falling several times on stage. He now walks with a cane, performs while seated and has lost some control of his fingers.
Osbourne, 75, rose to fame as the lead singer in the heavy-metal band Black Sabbath before launching his solo career in 1980. He suffered a serious fall in 2019, has since undergone four spinal surgeries and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2003.
Mick Jones, the 79-year-old founder of the band Foreigner, disclosed his own Parkinson’s diagnosis in February of this year. He cites his condition as the reason he no longer tours with his group. Foreigner’s farewell tour includes a June 28 show at the Honda Center in Anaheim.
Fellow 2024 Rock Hall inductees Kool & The Gang will perform June 24 in San Diego at The Shell. Bassist and band founder Robert “Kool” Bell is the only surviving member still on tour with the group.
The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Oct. 19 at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland and will stream live on Disney+ and be available on Hulu the following day. An edited airing of the ceremony will be broadcast on ABC at a later date.
Cher may command the spotlight at the induction ceremony — should she choose to attend.
In December — two months before the 2024 nominees were announced — the 77-year-old singer blasted the hall for never having made her a nominee despite her having been eligible to be on the ballot since 1990.
“You know what? I wouldn’t be in it (the hall) now if they gave me a million dollars,” Cher said during a telecast of “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”
“I’m not kidding you,” Cher continued. “I was about to say something else. … I was about to say I’m not sh-ting you. I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.”

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 16 artists or other musical figures who will be inducted in 2024. It’s a diverse list that stretches from R&B/rock pioneer Big Mama Thornton to pop superstars Cher and Dionne Warwick, and from ’70s-rooted rockers like Peter Frampton, Foreigner and Ozzy Osbourne to ’90s icons the Dave Matthews Band , Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest.
Popular on Variety
For the first time, the inductees were announced as part of an “American Idol” broadcast, during a Sunday night episode themed around the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Following is the complete list of inductees for 2024:
Performer Category:
- Mary J. Blige
- Dave Matthews Band
- Peter Frampton
- Kool & The Gang
- Ozzy Osbourne
- A Tribe Called Quest
Musical Influence Award:
- Alexis Korner
- John Mayall
- Big Mama Thornton
Musical Excellence Award:
- Jimmy Buffett
- Dionne Warwick
- Norman Whitfield
Ahmet Ertegun Award :
- Suzanne de Passe
The eight “performer” inductees are the ones selected by a ballot sent out to the Hall’s voters after the 15 nominees were announced on Feb. 10.
That leaves seven nominees from this year who will have to wait for another crack at getting in: Mariah Carey, Jane’s Addiction, Sade, Sinead O’Connor, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz and the duo Eric B. and Rakim.
One question mark now is how Cher will react to her induction. Just last December, in an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” she said, “You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars … I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.” At that point, though, she had never received so much as a nomination, so the odds favor her changing her tune on that vow, now that she got voted in her first time actually appearing on the ballot.
Five out of the eight voted in this year were first-time nominees: Osbourne, Cher, Frampton, Foreigner and Kool & the Gang.
A Tribe Called Quest got in on the hip-hop collective’s third time on the ballot (and their third year in a row being nominated). Blige and Matthews both got in on their second try (she was previously up for it in 2021; DMB had a prior nod in 2020).
Frampton, for his part, beyond the merits of having had one of the biggest albums of all time, may be a sentimental favorite this year, due to his being in the acknowledged twilight of his musical career. He has been out on a farewell tour off and on since 2019, following his diagnosis with the debilitating disease inclusion body myositis in 2015. The rocker just wrapped up the last round of dates he had scheduled, although he has not said there won’t be more.
Osbourne becomes a second-time inductee this year; his group Black Sabbath was voted in all the way back in 2006. Sometimes there is contention over whether singers who are already in the Hall of Fame, as group members, really need to be pushed to the front of the line as solo artists, too, ahead of other contenders. In any case, voters decided that Osbourne’s post-Sabbath career established him as one of rock’s major icons, even apart from his initial round of influence and success as a frontman.
De Passe is getting her flowers for a career that included a long stint as one of the major players at Motown, developing the Jackson 5 into superstars and signing the Commodores, among other triumphs, before becoming a film and TV executive. She was profiled by Variety about her long and wide-ranging career in 2022.
Motown is also being celebrated with the induction of Whitfield, a songwriter and producer whose astonishing catalog of hits in the ’60s and ’70s included “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Just My Imagination,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” “War,” “Ball of Confusion,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “(I Know) I’m Losing You,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “I Can’t Get Next to You” and “Car Wash.” He died in 2008.
Coming on under the “musical influences” umbrella, Alexis Korner may be the name among this year’s inductees that is least known to contemporary music fans. He was a major player in the British blues scene of the 1960s and became a popular broadcaster as well; he died in 1984 at age 55. With John Mayall also being selected by the committee for the same honor, it’s an unexpected banner year for British blues-rockers.
