Top Panama Canal FAQs

When is the best time to cruise the Panama Canal?

The Panama Canal is open to ships year-round, but the most pleasant time to cruise is in the winter season, from November to May. During these months, the climate is less humid and there is less rainfall.

How long does it take for a cruise ship to pass through the canal?

Typically, the transit of the Panama Canal takes eight to ten hours, but this depends on how much traffic there is and whether there is any congestion at the massive locks. You’ll find the transit is packed with excitement, whether your ship is squeezing into the locks, making its way along the narrow channel, or crossing the serene expanse of Gatun Lake, where there’s a great chance of spotting wildlife including monkeys, iguanas, and toucans.

What are the departure ports?

Celebrity’s Panama Canal cruises depart from Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami.

Which side of the ship is best for cruising through the Panama Canal?

There is no “best” side for cruising the Panama Canal. You will most likely find you want to enjoy the experience from different areas on the ship. When you’re in a lock, it’s fascinating to watch the mechanisms of these engineering masterpieces, so find the best position on deck to observe this.

On Celebrity Beyond, guests of The Retreat can take in the view from The Retreat Sundeck. Other vantage points include the Magic Carpet, cantilevered over the side of the ship, as well as the Rooftop Terrace and the Sunset Bar.

On Celebrity Summit, guests of The Retreat can view the locks from the Retreat Sundeck on deck 12 forward. Other options include the Sky Lounge, which has panoramic forward views and is climate-controlled, or the Rooftop Terrace, aft.

On a transit from Panama City to Colon, the futuristic skyline of Panama City will be on your starboard (right) side. When you pass through the skinny Culebra Cut between Panama City and Gamboa, you’ll have the greenery of a national park on both sides, so this is a good time to look for monkeys and toucans in the trees.

Entering Gatun Lake, it’s fun to be forward on deck as you can see the procession of ships coming towards you. You could also be aft, at the back of the ship, with a pair of binoculars to spot other ships.

The most important thing to do is to head up on deck and absorb this spectacular experience. Every transit will have expert commentary that’s broadcast on the decks and in the lounges, so you’ll be able to gain a deeper insight into the workings of the canal and its history.

How long do cruises last?

Celebrity’s Panama Canal cruises last either 11, 14, or 15 nights.

What's the difference between a full transit and a partial transit cruise of the Panama Canal?

A full transit of the Panama Canal takes you from the Pacific to the Caribbean, or vice versa. A partial transit, on the other hand, gives you a taste of the Panama Canal on a shorter cruise from Colon, on the Caribbean side, to the Gatun Locks and back again. You’ll still enjoy the experience of going through the massive locks.

When your ship spends the day in Colon, you can see more of Panama on a range of shore excursions. Despite the monumental achievement of engineering that the Panama Canal represents, the drive from Colon to Panama City is just under an hour, so there are plenty of options.

What are the main ports of call on a Panama Canal cruise?

Celebrity offers a variety of Panama Canal cruises, with several different ports of call. You could sail from Fort Lauderdale to the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao) and Cartagena in Colombia. A sailing from Miami to Los Angeles visits Cartagena, Puntarenas in Costa Rica, and Puerto Vallarta. Other cruises include stops in Huatulco, Mexico, and Grand Cayman.

What can I expect to see and experience during the canal transit?

During the 48-mile transit, you’ll see everything from intricate lock systems to the serene landscapes of the rainforest and Gatun Lake. Your ship will be raised up 85 feet through a system of three locks to the level of the freshwater Gatun Lake. Once you’ve crossed the lake, you will descend 85 feet back to sea level through another set of locks.

Being in the locks is a thrilling experience and gives you an insight into how extraordinary the canal is, all the more so given that it’s more than 100 years old. You’ll see everything from giant cargo ships to small yachts making the transit. Visitors in the viewing galleries at the locks will wave as you pass through.

On the stretches between the locks, you’ll be immersed in nature. The narrow Culebra Cut, an artificial channel near Panama City, is lined with greenery, while the expanse of the Gatun Lake is dotted with rainforested islands and is a great place to look for wildlife.

There are other manmade wonders to look out for, too. On the Panama City side of the canal, you’ll sail under the graceful arch of the Bridge of the Americas, which forms part of the Pan-American Highway from Alaska to Patagonia. Just beyond the bridge, as you head toward the Pacific, look out for the Biomuseu, a striking jumble of brightly colored shapes designed by famous architect Frank Gehry, housing eight galleries showcasing Panama’s biodiversity.

What excursions are available?

If you choose a cruise that includes a partial transit of the canal, you can experience Panama’s beauty during a day in Colon. Excursions from here include eco-adventures on Gatun Lake, where you can see capuchin and howler monkeys, caimans, and three-toed sloths. You could visit the locks along the canal and tour the visitor centers, stopping to watch ships pass through the narrow channels.

Or take a trip to Panama City itself, a dramatic contrast between glassy skyscrapers and the narrow alleys and colorful facades of the atmospheric Casco Viejo, or old town, dating back to the 17th century. There are excursions to an Embera village, too, where you can learn about the traditional lifestyle of this rainforest tribe.

What is there to do on the ship?

You’ll find no shortage of things to do on board your luxurious Celebrity ship. Sunbathe by the pool, relax in a bubbling hot tub, join a class in the Fitness Center, or indulge in a treatment in the spa.

Enjoy exploring all the different dining options, from made-to-order burgers and salads by the pool to French classics and a delightful 3D cartoon animation in Le Petit Chef, and steaks and seafood in the elegant Tuscan Grille. Elevate your experience to The Retreat and you can enjoy fine dining in Luminae, as well as suite accommodation and access to an exclusive lounge.

On Edge-Series ships, the Magic Carpet, suspended over the side of the ship, gives you uninterrupted sea views and is the perfect place to sit with a coffee or cocktail, enjoying the sea air. Or spend part of your Panama Canal transit in the Sunset Bar, at the aft of the ship, for wonderful views of the ships following you.

From Alaska to the Panama Canal: Here are 9 of TPG’s favorite fall cruise itineraries

Fran Golden

When it comes to fall cruises, the Canada/New England region snags most of the glory. Seasoned cruisers know the joys of sailing up the New England Coast to Canada, including the beauty of seeing leaves changing colors, the satisfaction of pigging out on lobster and the thrill of spotting whales.

But plenty of other deserving destinations are perfect for autumn cruising. From the Greek Islands with their ancient sites and crazy-beautiful views of the sparkling Aegean to Bermuda with its pink-sand beaches and summerlike temperatures, options abound.

Alaska sailings, which restarted in 2021 after a nearly two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, have also been extended into October in an effort to make up for lost time. That means, in addition to seeing glaciers thunderously shed house-sized chunks of ice into the sea, you might have a chance to spot the northern lights.

One thing cruisers can cheer about this fall: bargain fares. With cruise lines struggling to fill ships, prices remain low for the second year in a row, making a cruise a better value than other types of travel in 2022.

Here are our top picks for fall cruising.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

cruise panama canal to alaska

The Alaska cruise season typically ends in September, with most ships heading south by mid-month. But, as was the case in 2021, lines this year are trying to make up for lost time by sailing into mid-October.

The sailings will show Alaska from a perspective that cruise guests don't typically see. Ports such as Juneau and Ketchikan will have fewer visitors, with more locals getting back to their regular lives post-tourist season. The air will be brisk (expect temperatures in the 40s and 50s), with short days.

If you're lucky, the northern lights will be visible in the evening sky. Wildlife will be preparing for winter: bears filling up on silver salmon, moose looking for berries, bald eagles flying overhead. You might spot humpback and gray whales. Fishermen will still find rainbow trout and Dolly Varden — along with salmon. Fog or clouds near blue glaciers will make for exciting photos, with the ice really popping.

Plus, the fall cruises have some enticing bargain fares.

Bermuda is a popular summer destination. This year, the season will run through mid-December for some lines. That has its advantages.

Temperatures on the island typically remain in the low 80s in October and are in the pleasant 70s in November, so you can still hit the famous pink sand beaches and comfortably pursue such activities as hiking the historic Railway Trail past cottages, farms and gardens.

Cruisers can partake in fall traditions that include golf, tennis and food festivals. Bonus: The Bermuda Spiny Lobster (also known as rock lobster) season begins in September with the treat appearing on menus around the island.

California coast

As cruise lines move their ships out of Alaska after the summer season, some linger in California , affording an opportunity to view the coast from the sea and, in the case of sailings that spend time in San Francisco, to do a shore excursion to Sonoma wine country or Napa Valley in the height of the grape harvest.

For sailings that depart from ports near Los Angeles, you might consider arriving a day early and taking in some of the city's sights.

cruise panama canal to alaska

Fall cruises in the Caribbean include fewer children, except at Thanksgiving; reduced fares, due to lower demand; and cooler temperatures that are still warm enough to draw travelers to the beach.

Hurricane season runs through November, so you are taking a chance that your itinerary may change, but the good news is that cruise ships can reroute to avoid storms.

With Florida's designation as the cruise capital of the world, and given its proximity to the Caribbean, travelers have a large selection of ships to choose from if they depart from the Sunshine State. Since the Caribbean is a year-round destination, there's ample opportunity, but autumn does afford nicer weather and, often, less expensive fares.

European river cruises

Cruises on rivers like the Danube and Rhine are back in full swing, with all of the major river lines sailing again and offering itineraries throughout the fall.

One big advantage of a fall river cruise in Europe is the opportunity to visit vineyards brimming with grapes. If you're sailing the Danube between Germany and Budapest, take advantage of the cool weather and hike, bike or otherwise visit Austria's wine-growing Wachau Valley in late September or October.

If you're on the Rhine, have your camera ready to catch shots of breathtaking castles surrounding the Rhine Gorge. When you're docked, wander the historic cobblestone streets of Petite France in Strasbourg, stop for a cup of Rudesheimer coffee in Rudesheim or pick up a bottle of Cologne's signature fragrance.

Greek Isles

cruise panama canal to alaska

If you talk to a Greek, you will likely hear that fall is the best time to visit the islands. Summer temperatures reach well into the 90s, but come September they begin to cool. By October, they are in the very pleasant 70s. Plus you'll avoid the crowds, especially at such must-see sights like the Acropolis in Athens, the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, the expansive archeological site of Delos (off Mykonos) and the hilltop villages of Santorini.

By fall, you can have these places practically to yourself. Last year, Greece was the saving grace for summer cruises , allowing several cruise lines to call with passengers when most other Europe destinations remained closed to travelers.

New England and Canada

The stunning fall colors of New England are startlingly beautiful from the sea. Since Canada has not only reopened to cruisers but also waived its arrival testing requirement, cruises are back in full — or nearly full — force this autumn.

But book ASAP, as we're expecting pent-up demand, which could make cruises to this destination a hot commodity. From mainstream to ultraluxury, small ships to large ones, plus expedition vessels, passengers have lots of options to explore the coast from New York or Boston up to eastern Canada.

In addition to leaf-peeping, cruisers can view lighthouses, eat lobster, spot whales and learn about American history. Popular port calls include Bar Harbor, Maine; St. John, New Brunswick; and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Pacific Northwest

The Columbia and Snake rivers are beautiful places to cruise in the spring and summer, but they are particularly mind-blowing in the fall. The basalt cliffs and waterfalls of the deep Columbia River Gorge are enhanced by the addition of big-leaf maples ablaze in red, Oregon ash in yellow and cottonwood in orange.

River ships, including paddlewheelers and other small vessels, follow the path of Lewis and Clark in Washington State and Oregon from September to mid-November on sailings ranging from five to 11 days. While you are in the neighborhood, sample the local wines on visits to Washington State wineries.

Panama Canal

In the fall, cruise ships typically reposition from Alaska to the Caribbean through the century-old, manmade engineering wonder that is the Panama Canal. This fall, there are plenty of options, including sailings from several of the industry's most popular lines.

During your time in the Panama Canal, you'll experience both jungle views and your ship's maneuvering through a series of tight locks, sometimes with mere inches to spare. Be sure to wake up before sunrise if you want to snag a prime spot on the outer decks.

Along the way, you can expect calls on ports in Panama, Costa Rica and Colombia, among others.

Carnival Spirit Offers Panama Canal Cruise Ahead of Summer in Alaska

  • April 23, 2023

Carnival Spirit

Set to operate in Alaska during the summer, the Carnival Spirit is currently offering a 16-night Panama Canal to the Pacific Northwest.

After completing its winter schedule in the Caribbean, the Carnival Cruise Line vessel left Miami on its repositioning voyage on April 16.

Cruising all the way to Seattle, the one-way itinerary features visits to ports in three different countries: Colombia, Costa Rica and Mexico.

In addition to doing a complete transit of the Panama Canal, the Carnival Spirit is visiting Cartagena de Indias, Santa Marta, Puntarenas and Cabo San Lucas before arriving in Washington.

The 2001-built ship is then set to kick off its summer program in Alaska.

Beginning on May 2, the Spirit offers a series of seven-night cruises to the Last Frontier which also includes visits to Canada.

During the four-month program, the vessel will visit popular destinations in the region including Skagway, Ketchikan and Juneau.

Sailing roundtrip from Seattle, the Carnival Spirit also offers scenic cruising of the Tracy Arm Fjord, as well as visits to Victoria.

The schedule is part of Carnival’s 49-departure, three-ship summer season in Alaska, which also features the Carnival Luminosa and the Carnival Miracle .

Upon completing its Alaskan program in September, the Carnival Spirit is set to offer an additional Panama Canal cruise. Sailing from Seattle to New Orleans, the 16-night repositioning voyage precedes the ship’s debut in Mobile.

During the 2023-2024 winter, the Spirit is set to offer a series of different itineraries departing from the Alabama port .

Ranging from six to eight nights, the cruises sail to different parts of the Caribbean and the Bahamas, including Mexico, Honduras and Belize. In the Bahamas, the ship is set to visit Bimini, Freeport, Nassau and Princess Cays.

As the lead ship of Carnival’s Spirit Class, the Carnival Spirit originally entered service in 2001. Designed with a multi-deck atrium, a glass-enclosed pool deck and a large number of cabins with private balconies, the 2,100-guest ship was followed by the Carnival Pride, the Carnival Legend and the Carnival Miracle.

Panama Canal Cruise

About Panama Canal Cruises

A Panama Canal Cruise is an amazing experience that should not be missed. The canal is a 48 mile long canal that links the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. Cruises through the Panama Canal have varied itineraries. Twice a year in the fall and the spring as the ships reposition between the Caribbean and Alaska cruise lines offer full transit through the canal. These one way cruises sail through all of the canal's impressive locks. In the winter cruise lines offer partial canal cruises. These itineraries sail roundtrip from Florida, pass through the locks before turning around and returning to their originating port after re-entering the canal system on the return trip.

Taking a cruise through the Panama Canal allows travelers to witness first hand this marvel of modern engineering. The canal system is made up of three locks and a series of artificial lakes and canals. As ships pass the locks from the east their elevation is gradually lowered and as they pass the final set of locks, the Gatun locks, the ships ascend an amazing 85 feet bringing them back to sea level. The complete journey takes about 8-10 hours in each direction.

Panama Canal cruise itineraries also include wonderful ports of call in the Caribbean, Central and South America and Mexico. Travelers can explore these different ports and enjoy a number of activities including sightseeing, shopping, watersports, beautiful beaches and friendly people.

Panama Canal vs. Alaska

Cool Cruiser

If you wanted to take a 10-14 day cruise with an upgraded cabin (suite); which itinerary would you choose?

Also, on either one, is there a must-see location or must-do itinerary? i.e. inside passage versus "gulf and glaciers".

I'm leaning towards Alaska but I find the Panama canal fascinating. My husband would appreciate the more technical aspects of it.

We're only cruising every 2-4 years on average, so the expense is not an option. (we like to camp...worlds away from cruising!)

They're very different cruises. Alaska has amazing pristine scenery and very interesting ports but it is not a hot weather cruise. On the other hand the Panama canal is fascinating and very hot. DH sat watching the proceeds all day when we went through 10 years ago. I honestly don't know if I were confronted with doing just one of them again which one I would pick. Sorry, I'm not much help am I? Whatever you do, I'm sure you'll have a great time and yes, a balcony is a great choice for either of them.

dmwnc1959

As mentioned these are two very different cruises that you would choose for very, very different reasons.*

A cruise to Alaska and through the Inside Passage offers numerous days of close-in scenic cruising and wildlife spotting actually IN Alaska, whereas a Panama Canal cruise offers you that ONE single day transiting the canal. You get numerous other stops in Costa Rica, Mexico, Caribbean, etc, but one day actually IN the Canal Zone. And you hope you have good weather in the canal, 'good' meaning no torrential downpours in steamy, humid, 90+ degree weather. Sure you get rain in Alaska, but you'll have numerous days to make up for lost types of sightseeing in Alaska, i.e. more than one place to see glaciers, go kayaking, see wildlife, and shop.*

You get one shot at it the Canal.*

I've cruised Alaska five times on five different itineraries and on four different cruise lines, and each time was amazing and different from the last.

I personally prefer Alaska over the Panama Canal.

Alaska!!!!!:D:D:D:D

Thanks for the input!

I'm not really going to choose between the two, but hopefully do both at some point.

Would one be better for infants vs. toddlers? (i.e. do Alaska with infants because if I need to stay in the room, there's still something to see, vs. going out in port)

Any line better than the other, or just as you said, different but still great?

I guess I "knew" but it had not occurred to me that you get only one day at the canal.

IMHO either itinerary is wasted on a toddler or infant. You may want to take into consideration if any of the cruises line offer baby sitting services in port if you really want to go out and 'experience' Alaska (or the ports of a longer Panama Canal cruise) without having to push a stroller through the densely packed pedestrian areas. Also some of the excursions are of a higher level of activity or rather expensive yet the single best way to get out there and see what is beyond the city limits of the shop riddled tourist areas. I understand people take their toddlers and infants all the time but that does place restrictions on just how much, and what, you can do, how long you can be gone for, and what you'll need to drag along with you if you do take your toddler or infant out off the ship with you into port. I have done Princess, Holland-America, Celebrity, and Cruise West (now sadly defunct) and enjoyed them all immensely. To me the itinerary was equally as, or more important, than the ship and cruise line.

We've done both and I would pick Alaska over Panama Canal, but both are great. Be aware that Inside Passage out of Vancouver is at night and you don't see anything. Out of Seattle you traverse the inside passage during the morning. We did Alaska this summer out of Seattle and it was wonderful.

We had a couple on board and were talking with them as we cruised the Inside Passage and they mentioned it was their 92nd cruise to Aaska and the first time to see the Inside Passage.

is there a question here. ALASKA!!! Hands down!! been there twice and see a 3d trip at some point.

It's funny you should ask that - this past year my dh (and ds 9) and I did both. We did a 7 day alaska on Infinity and a 14 day PC 8 months later on Infinity. We had aft cabins on both (concierge class to Alaska and FOV thru the PC). They were both wonderful cruises but I think the Panama Canal we enjoyed more. The two cruises are so different from one another. Also our AK cruise was rt out of Seattle so a different itinerary may be better.

Personally I loved the history and culture we encountered on the PC cruise. The whole canal transit was amazing and I am so glad to have experienced it. If you want to read my blog you can see both journeys and compare. Either one is fantastic and you will really love it. I would not hesitate to choose either as a wonderful suite experience.

Here is the link to my blog: http://talkship.blogspot.com

I'll certainly have to check out your blog!

It's funny, when researching this, I found some Princess cruises (maybe X does them too?) that do Seattle as well as some ports in Japan. I thought that was REALLY neat.

The cruises are much longer 15-22 days. But Dh gets five weeks a year, but we'd certainly have to schedule that one quite a bit ahead of time!

Be aware that Inside Passage out of Vancouver is at night and you don't see anything. Out of Seattle you traverse the inside passage during the morning. We did Alaska this summer out of Seattle and it was wonderful.

Not entirely correct. On the first night out of Vancouver you pass east of Vancouver Island and wake up the next morning in the Inside Passage. The pictures I took below are of the Inside Passage on Princess as we transitted east of Vancouver Island. This was on our last sea day before returning to Vancouver. I have cruised Alaska 5 times: Vancouver R/T (Holland-America), Northbound and Southbound (Voyage of the Glaciers, Princess), Juneau to Victoria via Glacier Bay (Cruise West), and LA to Vancouver via Alaska and Glacier Bay (12-nights Celebrity), and on EVERY cruise saw the Inside Passage, even the portion east of Vancouver Island, and all but 1 cruise either originated or ended (or both) in Vancouver.

Also our AK cruise was rt out of Seattle so a different itinerary may be better.

Agreed. The itinerarries out of Vancouver are traditionally better ones.

Whats there to do on Sea Days in Alaska? ...from this thread:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1290428

As mentioned before the 'sea days' in Alaska are completely different than sea days on Caribbean cruises, and depending on the itinerary you will be navigating through various narrows and scenic stretches of the Inside Passage. However, if you depart out of Seattle the chances are that you will go WEST of the large Vancouver Island and that is basically your only true 'sea day' where you may be out of the sight of land. Thats why I have always preferred cruises that start of end in Vancouver, because they go to the EAST of Vancouver Island and there is more scenic cruising involved. Do take binoculars and a good book to relax and read on the Promenade Deck as the scenery slowly drifts past you. Here are some pictures I took on one of our 'sea days' in Alaska:

Alaska! Once though the canal was once too much for me. Been though one lock been though them all. Panama Canal is way hot. Alaska just right.

My DH and I have done both cruises on M Class C Ships. I preferred the AK cruise because of the breathtaking scenery one sees nearly all the time. Having the T Pool added to the enjoment. This cruise got us hooked on X. Our only regret was not doing a land segment along with the cruise.

OTOH, my DH says the PC cruise is his favorite. He's an Engineer and loved the Canal itself and the aspects of its construction. The rest of the ports, depending on the itinerary, may or may not be to your liking. The various cruise lines may have differing ports of call. Have fun checking them out!

As far as having young children with you, IMO, the PC transit would be preferable. The warmer (HOTTER!!!) weather would give them lots of beach time - which sure would have made our young ones happy!

Which ever you do first, hope you get to do both cruises and enjoy them both thoroughly!

richsea

Great photos of Alaska. However, they remind me that I would much rather pack 14 days of shorts & flip flops than 14 days of jackets, rain gear, long sleeved shirts, & long pants.

My pick would be the Panama Canal.

I vote for Alaska! Have the best of both worlds, take the cruise then rent a motor home in Alaska and tour on your own. We did that and honestly next time I wouldn't even do the cruise and just take a longer land trip. We used the Alaska TourSaver book and saved 1/2 off our camper. I loved Alaska so much I keep telling my husband I want to move there for the summers, especially Homer Spit! I'd move there tomorrow if I could!

My husband is an engineer as well, and I know he would like to see the Canal. He's also been mentioning alaska for quite a bit as well, however. I had been thinking about booking something as a surprise but now I think we'll just plan something together.

Pat.bz

Both! We got back from a B2B from Vancouver (thru Alaska etc) to Tampa (Mex, PC, Costa Rica, Columbia, Grand Cayman). They were both extraordinary--glad we didn't have to chose. We did these cruises in a deck 2 inside, which contrary to what I would have thought was excellent (we hung out on deck 13 with panarama windows). We were blessed with 14 days of perfect weather in Alaska and decent weather thru P.C. Did I mention we cruised thru a pod of 100 humpback whales just south of San Francisco?

Great photos of Alaska. However, they remind me that I would much rather pack 14 days of shorts & flip flops than 14 days of jackets, rain gear, long sleeved shirts, & long pants. My pick would be the Panama Canal.

On none of my 5 Alaska cruises did I pack long sleeve shirts other than for formal nights and my tux. During the daytime the temperatures in port was a very comfortable 55-70 degrees, and only in Glacier Bay and College Fjord did it get cold enough for a heavy coat. Sure it rained in Alaska, but when it rains in Panama (and it's 90 degrees with 70-80% humidity), it pours . Can you spot the cruise ship in this February webcam grab on the Panama Canal:

Partly it would depend on the time of year you want to travel. We did Panama first because we like to get away in the winter to warmer weather. We did Alaska last year because they had some good deals on. Personally I enjoyed Alaska more. With 2 weeks I would do a cruise with a land tour to Denali. The land portion was terrific.

As mentioned before the canal is only one day. Although some of the nearby ports are interesting if you enjoy history e.g the forts entering Cartegena. We only did the partial transit from Ft Lauderdale. A full transit would probabley be better but then air costs jump.

BillB48

The good thing is that the Canal cruises don't really compete with the Alaskan cruises. Alaskan itins will be available from May-September and Canal cruises mostly between October thru April. Avoid a decision... do both;)!

We will probably will do both. We've gone from taking "big" vacations every year to taking a big one every 3-4 years, and 10 long weekends every year. We're also buying a vacation home this year so I anticipate spending a lot of time there, but we do both enjoy cruising quite a bit so I don't see stopping that.

Because we're going on a cruise next month, our next trip will be in three years, and than one after that. Just trying to see which is better suited for us, for the next cruise. We're hoping to have little ones in the next two years, but with kids club, baby sitters, etc. I'm not terribly concerned with having a port a child will get a lot out of.

Now I'm split between booking something now to get a good cabin (preferably HA) and just deciding on an itinerary and start stalking it 4 months out for a good deal.

Ft Lauderdale is a city of islands held together by an intricate web of canals, rivers, bays and waterways hundreds of miles long. Needless to say, boating is a favorite city pastime, whether zooming along on a speedboat, enjoying a fishing charter, or cruising the coastline by yacht. Beautiful homes of every size and style make up the bulk of this primarily residential area. By the beach, a leisurly stroll can be taken along the new landscaping wavewall design of the beachfront promenade. But this city is anything but sedate. Once a spring break hot spot, the town still has an energetic and colorful nightlife. Nearby, charming Laudrdale-By-the-Sea is home to one of the only living coral reefs in the US accesible from shore. Las Olas Boulevard, a shoppers paradise, is the chic new shopping and trendy dining area of downtown. If sports are more your inclination, dozens of golf courses and hundreds of public parks allow you to absorb the great Florida outdoors. Cultural arts are also popular. Water taxis bring theater-goers from throughout the city to the Performing Arts Center on the water.

Aruba's path to the present day is marked by the mystery of ochre-colored rock drawings left behind by island shamans, the enterprising spirit of European adventurers and settlers and the diverse experiences and traditions brought by the many nationalities that have since sought out the island as either a new home or temporary resting place. The look of the people, the languages they speak and the innate hospitality that manifests itself in the Aruban psyche is the result of a multi-cultural mix that reflects a rich past.

Panama Canal

cruise panama canal to alaska

The Panama Canal is an artificial 48-mile waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. The Canal uses a system of locks -compartments with entrance and exit gates. The locks function as water lifts: they raise ships from sea level (the Pacific or the Atlantic) to the level of Gatun Lake (26 meters above sea level); ships then sail the channel through the Continental Divide. Each set of locks bears the name of the townsite where it was built: Gatun (on the Atlantic side), and Pedro Miguel and Miraflores (on the Pacific side). The lock chambers -steps-- are 33.53 meters wide by 304.8 meters long. The maximum dimensions of ships that can transit the Canal are: 32.3 meters in beam; draft -their depth reach- 12 meters in Tropical Fresh Water; and 294.1 meters long (depending on the type of ship). The water used to raise and lower vessels in each set of locks comes from Gatun Lake by gravity; it comes into the locks through a system of main culverts that extend under the lock chambers from the sidewalls and the center wall. The narrowest portion of the Canal is Culebra Cut, which extends from the north end of Pedro Miguel Locks to the south edge of Gatun Lake at Gamboa. This segment, approximately 13.7 kilometers long, is carved through the rock and shale of the Continental Divide. Ships from all parts of the world transit daily through the Panama Canal. Some 13 to 14 thousand vessels use the Canal every year. In fact, commercial transportation activities through the Canal represent approximately 5% of the world trade. The Canal has a work force of approximately 9 thousand employees and operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing transit service to vessels of all nations without discrimination.

Puntarenas/Costa Rica

cruise panama canal to alaska

The Central Pacific's largest city, Puntarenas sits on a long, narrow peninsula in the Gulf of Nicoya. For years, it was the country's principal port, and although a newer port in nearby Caldera now handles cargo and Puntarenas the cruise ships, a large fishing fleet still anchors in the estuary behind town. Being the country's most important fishing port, Puntarenas is the perfect place to enjoy fresh seafood, be it camarones al ajillo (shrimp scampi), pescado entero (a whole fried fish), or ceviche de corvina (bits of fresh fish marinate in lime juice with onions, peppers and spices).

San Juan del Sur

cruise panama canal to alaska

A picturesque port and popular beach town, San Juan del Sur is located 138 kilometers south of Managua, and is easily reached by way of the Pan-American Highway, veering right after passing the small community of La Virgen. San Juan is one of the most important seaports on Nicaragua’s Pacific Coast. Its waters are calm, transparent, and moderately temperate yearlong, making it an excellent swimming and fishing spot, attracting foreign and national tourists alike, particularly during the dry summer months. Interesting wind-blasted rock formations surround San Juan’s crescent-shaped bay, with magnificent, romantic sunsets adding to the surreal beauty of its beach. The plentiful amount of hotels and restaurants in the San Juan del Sur area add to the port town’s growing popularity. Although the specialty in most San Juan restaurants is seafood, delicious fritanga can be enjoyed at some of the popular eateries.

Virgin’s Newest Cruise Ship Set for NYC Debut in September 2025

Picture of Frank M

  • May 5, 2024

Virgin Voyages’ upcoming new ship, Brilliant Lady, will debut in September of 2025, giving US cruisers a first look at the line’s fourth vessel. The news follows a series of delays and cancelled voyages in 2024.

A large Virgin Ship Brilliant Lady, debuting in 2025, sailing on the ocean at sunset.

The ship will sail across North America for the inaugural season with multiple American homeports. It includes a Panama Canal transit, enabling it to offer West Coast itineraries.

Inaugural Sailings from New York City

Aerial view of Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan skyline at sunset, featuring colorful clouds and the New Virgin Ship, Brilliant Lady, reflecting on the water.

Starting in September 2025 from New York City, Brilliant Lady will operate five voyages from 5-13 nights to Canada and Bermuda. New ports of call include Charleston, Boston, Halifax, and New Brunswick.

The ship will transfer to Miami to homeport from October 2025 to April 2026. These extended Caribbean cruises range from seven to 12 nights. It will call at Turks & Caicos, Antigua, Grand Cayman, and a maiden visit to Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Brilliant Lady will then reposition to the west coast via a 16-night Panama Canal transit.

A Panama Canal Transit and Alaska Summer Season

Snow-capped mountains reflected in a tranquil lake at sunrise, with clear skies and a forested shoreline, marking the debut of the Virgin Ship Brilliant Lady in 2025.

For spring and summer 2026, Brilliant Lady will sail out of Los Angeles and Seattle, which will take in Virgin’s first Alaska cruise season. Anticipating high demand for Alaska sailings, customers can secure a stateroom with a deposit, available to book from May 8, 2024.

Brilliant Lady will feature the signature amenities on its three sister ships, such as the high-end wellness offerings of a mermaid-inspired spa and yoga perch. The cruise line will share details of new dining and entertainment options available on the new ship in the coming months.

Virgin said that the Brilliant Lady was constructed with an adapted frame that enabled it to sail through the Panama Canal and navigate the glaciers of Alaska. The ship will be adorned with a new mermaid designed by Toronto-based illustrator Janice Sung.

Brilliant Lady will join Scarlet Lady , Valiant Lady, and Resilient Lady in the Virgin Voyages fleet.

What to pack for a Panama Canal cruise

P acking for a cruise that travels through the Panama Canal isn't all that different from packing for an itinerary for other tropical destinations. However, since the trip brings with it the bucket list experience of the all-day canal crossing, which can last 10 hours or more, you'll want to make sure to bring things to stay comfortable outside on deck and items to capture and truly enjoy this unique journey.

You'll also want to pack for the other destinations on your itinerary, whether they're Caribbean islands, other Central American ports or both.

Follow this Panama Canal cruise packing list to make sure you don't forget anything on your Central America cruise of a lifetime.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Panama has a hot and humid, tropical climate, with temperatures that stay pretty constant throughout the year, in the mid- to high-80s Fahrenheit during the day and the mid-70s at night.

The rainy season generally lasts from May to December, bringing anywhere from 10 to 30 inches of rain, while the shorter dry season runs from January to May. As is typical in tropical destinations, showers can be brief, passing quickly before the sun comes back out.

Considering you're going to be outside for a long time watching your ship pass through 12 locks and travel across Gatún Lake, you'll want to pack to protect yourself rain or shine.

Related: 12 best Panama Canal cruises for a bucket-list trip

Sun protection

It will take your ship at least 10 hours to traverse the entire Panama Canal, and since this crossing is such a unique experience, you'll want to be on deck for much of that time. This means you'll need ample protection from the already intense Panama sun, made more so as it reflects off the water.

Pack sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30; spray is convenient, but it doesn't provide as much coverage as lotion and is better for touch-ups. If you're not checking your luggage, purchase a set of small silicone squeeze bottles that meet TSA carry-on liquid requirements and fill them with sunscreen lotion.

If you're planning any snorkeling expeditions during the rest of the cruise, buy reef-safe sunscreen, which uses a physical barrier like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide rather than a chemical one. Don't forget lip balm with an SPF, too.

Bring sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection and a hat with a wide or floppy brim to shield your face from the sun. Choose one with a chin strap, so it doesn't blow off on the windy deck. A rashguard, swimshirt, quick-drying board shorts (or another quick-drying bathing suit) and a cover-up are useful if you want to take a quick dip the day of the crossing but don't want to miss anything by going back to your cabin to change.

Related: Packing for a cruise? These items aren't allowed on board

All of these items will also come in handy for any tropical beach ports on the itinerary before or after the Panama Canal crossing.

Comfortable clothing and shoes

Your Panama Canal cruise packing list should be full of cool and comfortable clothing to help you weather the Panamanian heat. Natural fabrics like cotton and linen are a better choice than synthetic ones like polyester. Shorts and T-shirts are safe bets, as are cotton skirts or sundresses.

If you plan on being up on deck in the early morning hours as your vessel enters the first set of locks, you might want to bring a lightweight sweatshirt, cotton sweater or casual button-down shirt that you can remove as the sun and heat become more intense.

A lightweight rain jacket or poncho will keep you dry during those brief tropical showers that can leave as quickly as they came. You'll definitely need wet-weather gear if you're cruising during the rainy season.

Since you might be standing for much of the day, pack comfortable shoes — whatever that means for you. Some people prefer sneakers or tennis shoes, while others like boat shoes or sandals.

Even if you love wearing flip-flops, pack a pair of sneakers or close-toed shoes if you've signed up for excursions during the rest of the cruise, such as a Panama City walking tour, visit to a coffee plantation or a hike through a rainforest.

Eveningwear

While you'll want to be comfortable and casual during the crossing and any excursions, you might need to pack dressier attire for the evenings.

Depending on the cruise line and onboard restaurants you select, dinners can be casual, dressy or semi-formal. Plus, cruises often have themed nights where passengers are invited to wear a certain color or costume. Check the cruise line's website for the most relevant information about what to pack for evening soirees.

If you don't have room to pack a multitude of dressy outfits, stick with neutral colors that you can dress up with accessories, like a basic black dress with a few scarves or different jewelry, or a tan suit with a few ties and pocket squares.

Items to help you capture the Panama Canal crossing

If you're a serious photographer, pack a point-and-shoot or digital SLR camera with a decent zoom lens to capture the Panama Canal crossing and the scenery and wildlife you view along the journey. A tripod that wraps around the ship's railing, like ones made by GorillaPod, will come in handy for hands-free shooting and time-lapse photos and video.

Depending on the make and model of your cell phone, your camera might be sufficient to take high-quality pictures and videos — especially if you just want to capture memories for social media or a photo book when you come home. If your cell phone tends to lose battery power quickly, bring an external charging block, so you can stay juiced up all day and don't have to be tied to an outlet.

A waterproof phone case will be helpful in case it's raining on the day of the crossing. Plus, you can use it for beach, boating and snorkeling excursions the rest of the cruise.

If your phone doesn't already have a time-lapse feature, download an app designed for this purpose; going through each lock is a time-consuming process of entering the lock and having it filled or emptied to raise or lower the ship. Time-lapse videos that capture this process are very cool. You'll want a tripod that attaches to your phone for the best results.

Binoculars are useful for spotting wildlife on the banks of Gatún Lake. You might also want a small notebook to jot down notes, thoughts and cool things you see, as well as factoids from the onboard local guide providing commentary during the Panama Canal crossing.

Books about the Panama Canal and the surrounding region

If you're a reader who wants to glean all you can about this engineering marvel, pack a book that tells about the history and construction of the canal or download one onto your Kindle.

"The Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal, 1870-1914," by David McCullough does an excellent job of capturing the tragedy and triumph involved in building the canal.

If you're traveling with kids, "What is the Panama Canal?" by Janet B. Pascal breaks it down in an accessible way designed for those aged 8 to 12.

"Silver People: Voices from the Panama Canal" by Margarita Engle talks about the human toll that was needed, and "Erased: The Untold Story of the Panama Canal" by Marixa Lasso recounts the history from the Panamian point of view.

If you want something that encompasses more about the region, especially if you'll be exploring Caribbean islands on your cruise, James Michener's classic "Caribbean: A Novel" takes you through 700 years of conquests, pirates, revolution and romance.

While not necessary, a few optional items can make your trip more pleasant.

You'll be thankful for a portable fan charged via USB when you're standing on the deck during your crossing, embarking on a walking tour or waiting in line.

A wet bag to keep your phone and valuables dry is helpful for snorkeling trips, sunset cruises and jet skiing, and a lightweight nylon backpack that folds into itself will be great to hold what you need during city jaunts and day trips away from the ship.

Insect repellent will keep those pesky mosquitos, which can be brutal in Central America, especially after it rains, at bay.

Panama Canal cruise packing list

Bottom line

Packing for a Panama Canal cruise is similar to other Caribbean sailings, but you'll want a few extra things that will help you enjoy — and mark — the most memorable day in your bucket list itinerary.

Photos and videos are fitting souvenirs of this event, so make sure you're prepared on the tech side. But since you'll also want to be in the moment and take in all the sights and sounds, dress comfortably and protect yourself from the elements. In that way, you can better enjoy the 48-mile ride without distraction.
