From the Cruise Ship Terminals to Barcelona City Centre

Early morning at the Moll Adossat pier, Barcelona cruise terminals A to D

Barcelona is Europe’s largest cruise ship port, and the city receives more than two and a half million cruise ship passengers every year.

Fortunately, there are plenty of transport options available to get you from your ship to the city centre as quickly as possible. Which mode of transport you choose will depend on which terminal your ship arrives at, what you plan to see and do and your budget.

This article explains the different transfer services which are available and includes valuable information to help you make the most of your stay in this fantastic city.

Before deciding which is the best way to get from the cruise terminal to Barcelona city centre, you should check which pier your ship will dock at and how much time you will have before you need to return to your ship.

This information should have been provided by your travel agent when you booked your cruise. If not you can check the Barcelona cruise port schedule which is linked to on the right hand side of this web page under Monthly Forecast.

Location of Barcelona’s Cruise Ship Terminals

Barcelona’s cruise port comprises of 6 terminals located at the end of Barcelona’s famous Ramblas boulevard.

Two of the cruise-ship piers are located next to the World Trade Centre on the Moll de Barcelona Wharf and can be easily reached by walking from La Rambla and the nearby Drassanes metro stop (metro line L3).

The World Trade Centre terminals are called the North and South terminal and are used by smaller cruise liners.

Larger ships dock at the Moll Adossat quay terminals (Terminals A, B, C and D). Terminal D is the farthest away of the four quays and is approximately four and a half km from La Rambla and the Columbus monument .

Finally, the Moll de Sant Bertran  is a ferry terminal with routes to Spain, Morocco, Italy and the Balearic Islands. (See map below)

How to Get From the Cruise Ship Terminals to Barcelona City Centre

A taxi bringing passengesr from their ships to Barcelona city centre.

From the Cruise Ship Terminals by Taxi

There are taxi ranks next to each of the cruise terminals, and you can be sure that there will be a long line of taxis ready and waiting when your cruise ship docks.

A taxi from your cruise ship to the city centre will cost around €15 depending on which terminal your ship arrives at and whereabouts in the city centre you want to go to.

All taxis in Barcelona are metered; there is a €3.10 supplement for a cruise pier pick-up which will be added to the price which is displayed on the meter at the end of the journey. If you have a lot of luggage, there may also be an additional charge.

You can check the official tariffs here .

The distinctive yellow and black cabs also have a sticker displaying the prices on one of the rear windows.

From the Cruise Ship Terminals by Bus

The Cruise Bus (also known as the T3 Portbus) is a shuttle bus which runs between the Moll Adossat cruise ship terminals and the Wold Trade Center , a five-minute walk from Las Ramblas.

The fare is €3 one way or €4.50 return and can be paid in cash on the bus (coins or small value notes only) or online at the Cruise Bus website .

The buses don’t have a set timetable. Instead, they are coordinated with the arrival and departure of the cruise liners.

In the mornings, when passengers disembark from the ships, buses depart every few minutes. Later in the day, the buses run less frequently, so you should check the schedule with the driver and plan your return trip accordingly.

The Cruise Bus is NOT covered by TMB tickets or travel cards such as the T-casual or Hola Barcelona Travel Card .

The journey from the cruise terminals takes about 10 minutes. From here, you can start visiting Barcelona on foot since many of Barcelona’s most famous sights, such as the Ramblas, the Maritime Museum, the Gothic quarter and the historic Port Vell are close by.

Open-top city tour buses stop near the World Trade Centre terminals.

It’s a short walk from the Cruise Bus stop to the Drassanes metro station, which is on line L3.

If you are travelling from your ship directly to the airport, local bus company Moventis also operates a direct shuttle service from the cruise ship terminals.

A blue Cruise Bus on it's way to pick up passenghers from the Barcelona Cruise Port Terminals

From Barcelona Cruise Port by Private transfer

Although there will be plenty of taxis and buses waiting at the cruise terminal, when a large cruise ship docks and thousands of tourists disembark at the same time, long queues do form.

You can avoid the queues by booking your transfer in advance.

A private transfer is more expensive than catching a taxi at the taxi rank but has the advantage that your driver will be there waiting for you as soon as you disembark from the ship.

Book your private transfer in advance online .

From the Cruise Port to Barcelona City Centre on Foot

Before you decide to walk from your cruise ship, you should check which terminal your ship docks at.

From the World Trade Center Terminals

The  World Trade Center terminals  are located on the Moll de Barcelona, which is a short walk from the Columbus monument.

Walk straight ahead along the quay until you reach the large steel hoops of the Onades monument . Turn right and walk along the Moll de Drassanes until you arrive at the Christopher Columbus monument and the start of Las Ramblas.

From the Moll Adossat Terminals

If you decide to walk into Barcelona from the Moll Adossat quay, you should bear in mind that it takes between  25 (Terminal A) and 45 minutes (Terminal D), and there’s no shade from the sun.

Follow the road along the pier from the ships (there’s a paved footpath that runs alongside the road). After crossing the Porta d’Europa  bridge, continue straight ahead along the pier until you reach a small roundabout. Turn right and continue past the  Moll de Sant Bertran, the Onades monument and the Moll de Drassanes to the Columbus monument (see map below).

From here you can take the metro or bus to other parts of the city.

A cruise ship docked at the Moll de Barcelona World Trade center south pier

The Hop on Hop off Sightseeing bus from Barcelona Cruise Port

Barcelona’s open-topped sightseeing buses have two stops near the cruise port.

The first is located right in front of the World Trade Centre cruise terminals. The other is located next to the Columbus monument at the end of the Ramblas.

The buses follow three circular routes, each of which covers a different area of the city. Both of the stops near the cruise port are on the red route, which takes 2 hours to complete and is the most interesting of the three since it passes the most emblematic buildings.

Tour buses depart every 5 to 25 minutes, depending on the time of year.

By purchasing your ticket in advance online you can benefit from a €2 discount and board the bus at whichever stop you choose.

Shore Excursions

A popular way to maximize your time in Barcelona is to book a shore excursion .

In addition to saving you the hassle of organising your transfer from the port, being on an organised tour allows you to skip the lines when visiting popular sites such as Park Güell.

When you book your shore excursion, you will be asked to provide the name of your ship and arrival and re-boarding times.

Find out more and book a shore excursion>>

Left Luggage and Baggage Transfer in Barcelona

If you will arrive in Barcelona at the end of your cruise and want to spend a few hours sightseeing before your flight home, you can have your luggage collected from the cruise port and transported directly to the airport for you. Find out more .

There are also left luggage storage facilities near to Plaça de Catalunya,   Plaça d’Espanya and at Barcelona Sants train station.

Hotels at Barcelona Cruise Port

The only hotel at the Barcelona Cruise ship port is the Eurostars Grand Marina Hotel which is an very good 5-star hotel.

Hotels located on Las Ramblas or Av. Paral.lel are a short taxi ride from the cruise port. For more information about where to stay in Barcelona check out my Barcelona neighbourhood guide .

Which terminal is for Norwegian Cruise Ship?

I believe that the Norwegian Epic normally docks at the Adossat wharf, terminal A but I recommend you check with your travel agent to make sure.

Can you please let me know how you can get to Barcelona Airport from the Cruise Terminal .

The easiest and fastest way is by taxi which will cost about €40.

If you prefer to use public transport, the fastest way will be to take the “Cruise Bus” from the cruise terminals to the Columbus Monument and then walk to the Drassanes metro stop. From here you can catch the L3 metro to Plaça d’Espanya followed by the Aerobus to the airport.

There’s more information about transport to and from the airport, including a map and fares in this post .

Arriving early and need pickup at hotel in Barcelona to the pier for NCL and back to the hotel for 3 people

Hi Darlene,

You could get your hotel to call a taxi for you or use the links in the article to book a private transfer.

what bus do we take from the Be Ramblas Hotel to the Princess Explorer of the Seas?

Hello Harmony,

Do you know which pier your ship will dock at? I just checked the 2018 schedule on the Barcelona port authority website (link in the article) and the Princess Explorer of the Seas doesn’t seem to be listed.

I expect that it will probably dock at one of the terminals on Moll Adossat but you should check with the company to make sure.

Assuming that it docks at Moll Adossat then you can catch the blue Cruise Bus which departs from near to the Columbus monument (see map above).

I’m not familiar with the Be Ramblas Hotel. Do you mean the Be Ramblas Hostal at Carrer Nou de la Rambla 50? If so then your hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the Cruise Bus stop.

Barcelona cruise pier transportation

Complete Barcelona to cruise port transportation guide

How to get to barcelona cruise port & more.

Barcelona cruise ship port: Aida ship

The first thing you'll need to figure out is your pier. Large ships usually moor at Moll Adossat , which has 5 terminals. Smaller ships stop at Moll de Barcelona / World Trade Center. There's also 2 more terminals for ferries and one for large yatchs, but we won't be covering them in this post. You can ask your cruiseline what pier they use in Barcelona, or you can check the Barcelona Cruise Port Calendar . For everything else, this post will give you all the information you need.

Transportation to Barcelona cruise port and from it

Walking, not a good idea.

The port of Barcelona is basically divided in two cruise piers. While passengers from small ships such as Windstar and Aida stop at the WTC Barcelona Cruise Terminal that is only 5min. walk from the Statue of Columbus, where la Rambla begins, most large cruises stop in the Moll Adossat terminals and from there you need to cross the Porta d’Europa, the longest port bridge in Europe.

I don’t recommend trying to walk across the bridge, as it’ll take you some good 30 min. to get to la Rambla (under the hot Barcelona sun and with no shade to stop under… Trust me, I’ve done it and won’t repeat it again!). Anyway, after crossing the bridge you can walk up la Rambla and see the Gothic Quarter . You might even reach Passeig de Gràcia where the Gaudi apartments are, but you’ll need strong legs to do that!

BEST FOR : Small ships docking in Moll de Barcelona.

The ride from Moll Adossat to Columbus statue is 10 minutes long. The Cruise Buses don’t accept Barcelona transportation cards: you’ll have to pay for the bus one-way ticket, which is affordable enough. Once in the city, we don’t recommend trying to navigate the city buses, as the subway will take you pretty much everywhere you want to see.

BEST FOR : Ships docking in Moll Adossat, if your budget is limited.

Hop on Hop off Buses

There’s a stop near Columbus Statue. You can purchase them on board, or buy them online and then exchange them at the Tourist Information Point underneath Columbus Statue. Keep in mind that Hop-on Hop-off buses follow a unidirectional itinerary that takes 2 to 3 hours to get back to where you started if you stay on the bus all the time. If your time in Barcelona is limited, don’t plan to hop-off and on or you’ll be wasting to much time and you’ll risk having to hop on a taxi and rush back to the cruise port if you didn’t plan enough buffer time.

BEST FOR : People with low energy levels or walking issues on a budget.

There is no  subway  station in the Barcelona cruise port: you’ll have to get in town to use it. The closest subway station is called Drassanes, in the L3 line (green). It’ll ride you all along la Rambla and Passeig de Gràcia, and if you are ready for a walk uphill, the Vallcarca station it’s a 20min. walk to the  Park Güell .

The same line takes you to Espanya and Parallel, from where you can access the hill of Montjuic (although if you only have a few hours and are on foot, I’d rather skip that part of the city).  You’ll need to change lines to get to the famous Sagrada Familia church (go to Paral·lel, and from there switch to the Pink Line (L2).

BEST FOR : Travelers on a budget that are used to navigating public transportation.

BEST FOR : Any situation, from sightseeing to getting to your hotel or train station with luggage.

Is there Uber in Barcelona?

Technically yes, but all the Uber drivers in Spain must have a taxi license, and since the taxi lobby considers Uber (and Cabify and Bolt) unfair competition, they tend to boycott it by not joining their platform. As a result, there’s very few drivers available on the app, and the wait times are long. We recommend to stick to regular black and yellow taxis, and if you need to use an app to call one, use alternatives such as Free Now or Picmi.

Private drivers

A private driver is the premium way to get to the Barcelona Cruise Port, or to exit it. Private drivers in Spain must have a special professional license and insurance, their cars must have a blue plate, and must comply with high quality standards. The ones we use, for instance, are all recent models of Mercedes vehicles, either cars or vans. A driver will be waiting for you at the exit of the cruise terminal, holding a sign with your name. With them, it’ll be a breeze to get to the airport, train station or your hotel.

BEST FOR : Premium transfers to hotel, airport or train station.

Can they give you a tour of the city before dropping you off?

They certainly can, but bear in mind that in Spain you need different licensed to drive cars and to work as a tour guide. A licensed tour guide is trained to give you detailed explanations of the sites and can skip lines when taking you inside. Instead, drivers most of the time only have basic knowledge about the city (or parrot what they’ve heard licensed tour guides explain, without having really studied it), and must stay by their vehicles when you are out and about exploring a site or area on your own.

Private shore excursions

While usually a shore excursion organized by the ship is shared with dozens of other cruisers, and start and end in the cruise, private shore excursions are just for you and your party only, and they can start or end anywhere you want. During a private shore excursion you get not just a private driver but also a licensed tour guide to show you around. You can decide on the exact itinerary, and if necessary, they can start or finish at the airport, your hotel or the train station.

A private shore excursion is the easiest way to exit the Barcelona Cruise Port , and you will also take the most out of your short time in the city. Certainly it is more expensive if you are only two people, but if you are traveling with some more friends or family, the price becomes quite reasonable compared to joining one of the group tours offered by the ship.  Small groups move faster than large tours, so you’ll get see more things in the same amount of time!

BEST FOR : Premium travelers that want to maximize their time in Barcelona and don’t want to have to deal with organizing details.

Park Guell Sagrada Familia Montjuic Tour

Transportation from Barcelona cruise port to airport (or viceversa)

Is taking public transportation a good idea, taxis, private drivers and private tours.

There’s a set fee of €39 for taxi rides from the Barcelona cruise port to airport (you can check here to make sure this is updated). A private transfer can cost 2 to 3 times more, but you pay for the premium level of comfort (eliminate waiting times, high end vehicles, English speaking driver… sometimes even complimentary water bottles on board).

And if you have enough time and budget, you can spend those few hours between docking and flight departure exploring Barcelona, booking a city tour ending at the airport or starting there, depending on your needs.

Barcelona cruise port is the largest in Europe! This bustling hub handles close to 3 million cruise passengers each year. With six sprawling terminals to navigate, having the inside scoop is key to a smooth start to your cruise adventure:

Barcelona Cruise Port Locations: Map & Directions

Barcelona cruise port’s WTC South Terminal enjoys a prime location, nestled right at the heart of the city’s vibrant waterfront and just a stone’s throw from the iconic Las Ramblas. The other terminals are less central and a 5 minutes’ drive away. The port is conveniently close to Barcelona Airport (El Prat), approximately 12 km (7.5 miles) away.

Depending on your chosen mode of transport, the journey from the airport to the port takes about 20-30 minutes on a private transfer to about an hour on public transport, depending on whether you get lucky with the train times! Jump straight to the section on transport options & approx. cost.

Currency: Euros

💶  Cash or 💳   Card in Spain?

  • 💳  Card : I had no issues paying with card 95% of the time, from train tickets, local metro/bus tickets to restaurants, convenience stores and museums. Taxis also take cards by law in Barcelona.
  • 💶  Cash : Smaller businesses, such as bakeries and market stalls will be cash only, so I would advise to carry some euros in cash. The Barcelona port shuttle bus is also cash only but the driver will have some change.

Language: Spanish

Luggage Storage : Want to ditch your bags before cruise check-in? Use Bounce, as there’s lots of locations around Barcelona. I used one opposite the Sagrada Familia and visited the cathedral with just my purse. Get US$5 discount on your first luggage storage with Bounce with my referral link (min $10 purchase).

Recommended Transport App : Citymapper is my go-to resource for navigating public transportation in Barcelona and I recommend it! Google Maps also works well too!

eSIM for roaming in Spain:  For a great data connection without the huge roaming fees, use an eSim data pack from Airalo. I always recommend having a smartphone with a valid plan when you’re at port touring independently. Get US$3 off your first eSIM data pack from Airalo when you use  ROXANN1666   when you sign up or apply it at checkout

Beware Barcelona’s Pickpockets! 📢

Barcelona is a vibrant city, but it also has a reputation for petty theft. It’s even been nicknamed as the “Pickpocket Capital of Europe”! Here’s a heads up to stay vigilant, especially on public transport and around crowded areas like the cruise port:

  • Groups Targeting Tourists:  Be wary of groups approaching you, especially on the metro. They might try distraction tactics while an accomplice attempts to steal your belongings.
  • My Personal Experience:  On my way to the airport on the metro, a group of 3 women targeted me. They circled me, with one attempting to distract me while another tried to unzip my purse. The third woman tried to corner me on the crowded metro. Thankfully, I was aware of these tactics and nothing was stolen.
  • Protect Your Valuables:  Keep your purse or backpack close to your body, preferably in front. Avoid leaving belongings unattended, especially near the cruise port.

By staying alert and taking some simple precautions, you can ensure your Barcelona adventure is filled with happy memories, not pickpocket woes!

Getting from Barcelona Cruise Port: Your Transport Options

1. official taxis & ride-sharing (uber).

  • Fixed Fare Airport Transfer : A convenient option with a flat rate of €39 for journeys to/from the Barcelona Moll Adossat cruise port (includes surcharges).
  • City Centre Pricing: Keep in mind that there’s no fixed fare for taxi rides from the city centre to the port.
  • Surcharge Alert : A €4.30 surcharge applies to taxi journeys starting at the cruise port (to destinations other than the airport).
  • Uber in Barcelona : While Uber exists in Barcelona, it’s less widely available than in the US. For simplicity, especially when coming from the airport, a regular taxi might be your easiest bet.
  • Group Travel & Luggage Convenience : If you’re traveling with a group or have lots of luggage, a door-to-door private transfer offers maximum convenience. You can pre-book these independently or through your cruise line.
  • Focusing on DIY : Since this guide is about DIY options, I’ll jump straight to the budget-friendly public transport section below!
  • Barcelona’s Public Transport Advantage : Barcelona boasts an excellent metro and bus network, making it easy to reach the port. You’ll take the metro to the closest stop Drassanes and then connect with the €3 port shuttle bus, which takes you directly to your terminal.
  • Traveling from the City Centre : Many cruisers arrive a day early for added security. If you’re departing from the city centre, public transport is a breeze. Check out my public transport hacks below for a seamless journey !

Public Transport from Barcelona Airport (BCN) to Cruise Terminals

Ready to set sail from Barcelona? Here’s how to navigate public transport from BCN Airport (El Prat) to the cruise terminals:

1. By Suburban Train & Metro: A Direct Route

The metro offers a straightforward option, especially if you’re traveling light. Take RENFE R2 Nord Line from the Airport Train Station (located outside Terminal 2 via covered footbridge) towards Passeig de Gràcia station. This journey on the suburban trip takes 27 minutes and leave the airport every 30 minutes. Once at Passeig de Gràcia, switch to the metro green L3 line towards Drassanes station. This leg is just 5 minutes. Buy an integrated ticket for €5.50 from ticket machines.

Both Passeig de Gràcia station (for the interchange) and Drassanes station boast lift access, so bringing your luggage is not an issue. From here, follow the tips below to reach the cruise port shuttle bus stop or your desired terminal.

Flying into Terminal 1? You can’t walk between Terminal 1 & 2 but there is a free airport shuttle bus between Terminal 1 & Terminal 2B to allow you to connect easily to the Airport Train station for the RENFE R2 Nord line.

Important Note: The L9 metro line stops at both the Airport Terminal 1& 2 but I do not recommend taking the metro, if you intend to go straight to the cruise port. To get to Drassanes station via the L9 metro requires two interchanges, rather than one. If you must, change to L5 at Europe Fira, then change again to L3 at Espanya. Both are major stations with escalators and elevators.

Plaça d'Espanya, Barcelona, where the Aerobus from the Airport ends

The Aerobus service is an express bus from the airport to Plaça d’Espanya. This is my less preferred option because the interchange between metro and bus is slightly harder and it is also more expensive.

Board the Aerobus A1 (from Terminal 1) or A2 (from Terminal 2) outside the arrivals or departures level. These bright red buses run frequently (every 10-15 minutes) and take approximately 25 minutes to reach Plaça d’Espanya, costing €6.75 (single ticket) or €11.65 return. From Plaça d’Espanya, enter Espanya metro station, buy a single metro ticket (€2.55) and catch the L3 line to Drassanes (3 stops).

Ticket Tips:

  • Single Aerobus tickets can be purchased from vending machines or directly on the bus. If you’re not sure you’ll have change, you can also purchase your Aerobus tickets online (valid for 90 days). The Aerobus website does sell a combined Aerobus + one way Metro ticket for €8 but you still need to stop by a ticket machine to redeem the metro ticket, so it won’t save you any time!
  • Consider buying a T-Casual 10-trip ticket (€12.15) if you plan on using public transport after your cruise on a post-cruise stay in Barcelona (valid on metro and some buses, with up to 3 free transfers within 75 minutes). However, note that the T-Casual cannot be shared and isn’t valid for airport journeys.

cruise port shuttle bus in barcelona

Navigating Barcelona’s public transport from the city centre to reach the cruise port is straightforward! With the extensive metro and bus network, you can easily get to the cruise port (even with luggage!) from the city centre. Here are some insider tips to make your journey smoother:

  • Metro Magic: Drassanes station (on the green L3 line) boasts a lift – perfect for wrangling luggage – and drops you right at the end of the famous La Ramblas. Your landmark is the Christopher Columbus column. Once past the column, turn right towards the cruise ship likely docked outside the World Trade Centre South Terminal (Check the map above!).
  • Bustling Buses: Don’t limit yourself to the metro! Barcelona has a fantastic bus network. If you’re staying near one of the beaches, you might find a direct bus route to the port, saving you metro changes. Check Citymapper or Google Maps for the best options from your location.
  • Ticket Talk: A single metro or bus ticket costs €2.55. You can buy tickets from machines in metro stations or use a contactless card on the bus (just listen for the beep!). However, if you’ve been exploring Barcelona before your cruise, the T-casual 10-trip ticket (valid on metro and buses, including up to 3 free transfers within 75 minutes) for €12.15 might be a more economical choice. Note that the T-casual cannot be shared with other passengers on the same journey and isn’t valid for airport transportation.

Once at Drassanes metro station or at a bus stop nearby, walk to the port shuttle bus stop, 5 minutes on flat ground away.

Barcelona Cruise Port Shuttle Bus

Ready to roll? The Barcelona Cruise Port Shuttle Bus awaits outside the World Trade Centre, with the stop facing the South Terminal (check it out on Google Maps ). This trusty blue bus runs on a continuous loop, ready to whisk you away to terminals A, B, C, D, and E. Don’t get too comfy though – the ride is about 5 mins, so make sure you hop off at the right stop!

The port bus is cash only and tickets are €3 one-way or €4.50 for a day pass (not a return, so don’t get your hopes up on saving money for a roundtrip cruise!) If you lack change or small bills, ditch the old-school approach and snag your ticket on your phone via the official website before boarding.

No worries if you’re lugging suitcases – I rode the shuttle with my check-in bag and hand luggage and it’s not an issue. There’s some luggage racks on the bus.

I’ve witnessed brave souls attempt this feat, suitcases valiantly wobbling in their wake. But no, I do not recommend it. The bridge to the terminals embraces a car-centric philosophy with no pavement for pedestrians. You’ll be dodging traffic while tackling a sneaky uphill climb.

That wraps up my Barcelona Cruise Port DIY Embarkation guide! I hope these tips have equipped you for a smooth embarkation. Bon voyage! If you found this helpful, please feel free to share it with fellow cruisers.

cruise port shuttle bus in barcelona

The Barcelona Port Cruise is one of the most important in the Mediterranean. The biggest cruise companies in the world have Barcelona as one of their main destinations and also as a point of departure.

Not only because of the great interest that Barcelona sparks as a destination, but also thanks to the modern and busy Barcelona airport and a cruise port with a great infrastructure.

If you're coming to Barcelona on a Cruise, read these recommendations on the best ways for  getting to Barcelona from the Cruise Port Terminals .

Click for Barcelona to Cruise Terminal Private Transfers

The Cruise Bus is a bus service available at the Barcelona Port . You can book tickets in their official website .

It runs a circular route between the World Trade Center (located just 550 meters from La Rambla ) and the Cruise Terminals.

Please note that this is not a regular bus service and only works whenever there are cruises arriving to Barcelona.

Check the returning schedule at your stop or with the bus driver. The one way ticket costs 3,00€ and the round trip 4,50€.

Taking a taxi is the easiest way (and most expensive also) to get to Barcelona from the cruise terminals. Depending on the demand the service can be fast and reliable, however sometimes you may expect big lines to catch one.

On the other side, the ride to Columbus Monument is generally fast and you should expect to pay between 12-15€, as there is a suplementary charge for being picked up on the Port.

Remember to write down the Terminal you're in so you don't get lost on the way back to the cruise.

There is no direct connection between the Seaport and the Airport.

If you're coming to Barcelona by plane and you're catching a cruise later on, there is the obvoius choice of taking a taxi, but if your travel group is small or you travel by your own, there are less expensive ways to get from the Airport to the Cruise Port .

Once at the Prat Airport, take the Aerobus (single ticket 5,90€) until the first stop in Plaza España , then take the Metro Line 3 and ride until Drassanes Station.

Once there you can catch the Port Bus and reach the Cruise Port for 10,40€.

How to arrive:

The Airport of Barcelona is about 13 km from Barcelona center. Trains and buses have frequent schedules to the center, but since you have to change a couple of times and also to walk the last part to the terminal, the best option for traveling from the airport to the cruise terminal is to catch a taxi. Taxis are quick and not expensive. The journey will take about 35 min's by taxi. The journey from the airport to the port is unlikely to cost you more than €40. If you are a group of 4 or more you might consider a private transfer with Barcelona-airport-transfers . Luggage storage is only possible at terminal 1 (intercontinental flights) or at train station Sants Estacio (directly connected to the Airport and Plaça de Catalunya.

The Cruise Terminal of Barcelona and getting around:

The port is the starting and arrival point for many Mediterranean cruise itineraries. The seven operating terminals, and the various docks and facilities, are at a short distance from the city center. The terminal is at Port Vell in Barcelona which is at the Southern most end of the famous Ramblas. The seaport terminal is only 10 min's walk from the Ramblas. However, since there are several cruise terminals at the port and if you are in one of the terminals which are further away from the Ramblas you may catch a taxi or the shuttle bus, which will take you to Monument Christopher Columbus which is at the Southern most end of the Ramblas. The shuttle bus service runs from all port terminals down to the monument.

There is a port shuttle bus that goes from the cruise terminals to the Columbus Monument at the bottom of Las Ramblas. The bus is called Cruiser T3 but is often referred to as the 'Blue Port Bus'. The fare is €3 per person, €4.50 return. You cannot use a T10 ticket on this bus. The nearest metro station is Drassanes which is on line L3. It is about 2-3 minutes walk from the Columbus Monument, where the shuttle bus stops. The bus is wheelchair friendly.

A taxi is a good bet (around 15 Euro) if you want to go to Placa de Catalunya with its famous stores and stroll back, slightly downhill, over the Ramblas towards the harbor. Taxi back will be 2.10 euro more, due to port charges. Do not pay more than that as cabbies make you believe.

As your hand luggage is checked by the port authorities itself before entering the modern terminal, there is ample of opportunity to stock up on your favorite alcoholic beverage in the competitive priced tax-free shops before boarding. No carry-on bags will be checked when boarding the ship.

In spring 2018, Carnival Corporation opened a new terminal, which is designed to accommodate Carnival's next-generation ships, powered by eco-friendly Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). Ships from eight Carnival brands -- AIDA Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, Cunard, Holland America Line, P&O Cruises (U.K.), Princess Cruises and Seabourn -- visit Barcelona throughout the year.

Sightseeing:

Barcelona balances itself on the cutting edge of architecture, intellectual life, and style. Among the city's unique delights is its Picasso Museum, palm-lined avenues, striking Gaudi architecture , revamped beachfront, and late-night club scene. The capital of Spain's Catalonia region is one of the country's -- maybe even Europe's -- most beautiful and vibrant places. A city of contrasts, it is like no other in Spain; this is most evident in its architecture, a marriage of Gothic spikes and modern curves.

Barcelona is also a city of neighborhoods, all distinct, which are surprisingly walkable and easily accessible by bus, metro or even on foot (in comfortable shoes). Don't miss a stroll along Las Ramblas , replete with produce and flower stands, a historic opera house and a thoroughly intriguing open pet market. Maybe you will be there when they are celebrating one of the many fiestas: whether they are celebrating a saint's day or the changing of the seasons, the people of Barcelona fill the streets with color, music, and excitement for young and old. Experiencing the traditions ranging from Spanish to Catalan or even unique to the city of Barcelona, adds to a visitor's enjoyment like nothing else can. The largest fiestas in Barcelona are Sant Joan (Saint John) on June 23rd ringing in the summer, and La Mercè for the Patron Saint, September 24th. The most beautiful holiday is undoubtedly Sant Jordi (Saint George) – the day of the book and the day of the rose April 23rd.

The Picasso Museum in Barcelona is indispensable for understanding the formative years of Pablo Ruiz Picasso. The genius of the young artist is revealed through the more than 3,500 works that make up the permanent collection. However, the Picasso Museum also reveals his relationship with Barcelona: an intimate, solid relationship that was shaped in his adolescence and youth, and continued until his death. Thanks to the wishes of Picasso and his friend Jaume Sabartés, Barcelona now has the youthful work of one of the twentieth century's most significant artists.

Miró's works are to be found today in the world's principal museums and cultural institutions. Many, however, have remained in Catalonia, mostly in the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona. Throughout his life, Joan Miró took a particular interest in the diversity of materials, forms and colors. It led him to explore and experiment with different art forms such as painting, sculpture, printing techniques, ceramics, the theater, and tapestry. One result of this was a collaboration with Josep Royo, an innovative craftsman, who during the seventies aroused Miró's interest in tapestry and textiles.

Sagrada Família - Barcelona's most popular and famous attraction, the Sagrada Família is a testament to Antonio Gaudi's modernist style and unlike any other church in the world

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Rent a bike or take an excursion by bike with an English speaking guide showing the most important sights of Barcelona: the Gothic Quarter with the cathedral, the Old harbor with the statue of Columbus, the Ciutadella Park, the Sagrada Familia, the Olympic Port and Gaudi´s fabulous monuments with Fat Tire Bike Tours Barcelona . The best place for a ride is along the well-marked bike lanes by the sea, which lead to the medieval streets of the old city, past busy ports and down to beaches. If you're willing to brave traffic and tackle a few hills, you can crisscross the city and there are many more bike lanes in the planning. A guide and a map can be purchased at the Tourist Offices .

Hop on hop off . If you are coming to Barcelona for the first time, or if you are planning to stay in the city for a short time, this is one way of getting to quickly see the city's monuments and most important tourist sights of interest.

The Barcelona Tourist Office offers, among other interesting tours, 4 different, english speaking, guided walking tours, including a Gourmet walk in which you will find out about the history of Barcelona's cuisine as well as some of its flagship restaurants and food outlets, and sample some of their products. If you want to see Barcelona from a birds eye point of view, ride the Montjuic cable car . You can buy tickets on board. The entrance is not to far from the harbor, just follow the cables to the entrance. If it is too windy, the cable cars won't run. So simply look to the sky to see whether they are running or not. A small guide book is very useful, as there is so much to see in Barcelona!

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

The Barcelona cruise terminal can be found in Port de Barcelona, which sits just beneath the Gothic Quarter of the city, a short walk away from many of Barcelona’s key sights.

There are 9 terminals in the port, 7 of which are allocated for cruise ships.

The 7 terminals can be found at the foot of one of Barcelona’s most beloved streets, Las Ramblas.

The majority of the cruise terminals (A, B, C, D, and E) can be found on Adossat Quay, a long pier to the outside of the harbor, which is connected to the rest of the port by a bridge. Terminal D is also referred to as Palacruceros.

There are two more cruise terminals at the World Trade Centre pier, known as the North and South terminals. The World Trade Centre pier is the closest pier to the city center.

Getting Around Barcelona from the Cruise Port

The good news is there are a number of ways in which you can journey from Barcelona Cruise Port to the city center.

Are There Free Shuttles From Barcelona Cruise Port?

There is a shuttle bus available from the cruise port known as the Blue Bus which takes cruisers to the monument of Christopher Columbus (just below Las Ramblas).

The Blue Bus coordinates its run time with the cruise arrival and departure times and comes roughly every 15 minutes when there’s a cruise ship in port. It isn’t free, however.

🚎 The fare is €3 per person or €4.50 for a return ticket.

Bus sitting with sunset

Can You Walk to the City Center from Barcelona Cruise Port?

From the World Trade Center pier, it is a short 10-minute walk to Barcelona city center.

From the other cruise terminals, however, walking isn’t recommended as you need to journey 2 km (1.2 miles) just to reach the opening to the city. Taking the Blue Bus or taxi is a far better option.

Are there Taxis Available from Barcelona Cruise Port?

Just outside the port terminal, you will find a taxi rank. The taxis liaise with the cruise terminal staff to ensure there are always enough taxis outside to accommodate everyone.

Taxis are convenient as you can take them directly to the location you want to visit. They are, however, a lot more expensive than the Blue shuttle bus and a typical fare to Las Ramblas is €10 each way.

Best Shore Excursions from the Barcelona Cruise Port

When you arrive in Barcelona, there are a number of exciting shore activities for you to enjoy. Below are some of my favorites!

La Rambla

1. Stroll Down Las Ramblas

Las Ramblas Boulevard is a colorful and energetic street in the heart of Barcelona. It houses some of the city’s most iconic attractions, spanning an impressive 1.2 km (0.7 miles) in length.

When wandering down this iconic boulevard, you’ll pass numerous street performers, all out to impress with their unique costumes and heart-stopping acrobatics.

One of the best places to visit in Las Ramblas is La Boqueria Market , Barcelona’s key market. It’s a fantastic place to grab a bite to eat.

2. Marvel at Sagrada Família

Sagrada Familia, Barcelona

The infamous Sagrada Família is perhaps the first attraction that comes to mind when you think of Barcelona. This never quite finished landmark is a church designed by famous architect Antoni Gaudí.

It’s a spectacular piece of artwork and has earned itself the title of the largest unfinished Catholic church in the world. Construction first began in 1882.

La Sagrada Familia can be admired from afar. Alternatively, you can buy tickets and enter the famous church. The interior is just as impressive as the exterior, with so many intricate details in the structure waiting to be admired.

3. Visit Casa Milà

Casa Mila, Barcelona

Casa Milà (also known as La Pedrera which means ‘stone quarry’ in Catalan) is a beautifully-constructed block of apartments and was the last private residence designed by Antoni Gaudí, constructed in the early 1900s.

This grand building is undoubtedly spectacular. However, the star of the show is its terrace with unique chimneys shaped like statues.

Today the house is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site and is a great monument to visit. Within the building is a Gaudí interpretation center. The site also houses art exhibitions and performances.

4. Relax in Plaça de Catalunya

Plaça de Catalunya i

Plaça de Catalunya is a large square in the heart of Barcelona, primely positioned at the meeting point between Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter and the 19th-century part of the city.

The square covers an area of 5 hectares and features several interesting sculptures, expanses of verdant grass, and a handful of fountains.

Plaça de Catalunya is a great place to sit on a park bench and admire Barcelona with an ice cream or takeout coffee from one of the numerous local cafes.

5. Wander Through Park Güell

Park Güell,

In the northern district of Gracia is Park Güell, a grand park consisting of neat gardens as well as beautiful buildings and sculptures designed by Antoni Gaudí. One of the houses within the park used to be the residence of Gaudí himself.

In this park, you can find the famous mosaic Gaudí dragon fountain as well as the tranquil Nature Square which has fantastic views over Barcelona city center.

6. Explore The Gothic Quarter

Barcelona Gothic Quarter

Made up of winding cobbled streets and tranquil squares, the Gothic Quarter is the historic center of the old city of Barcelona.

Included in this beautiful segment of the city are the remains of Barcelona’s Roman city walls, a Roman temple ( Temple d’August ), and a magnificent Gothic Cathedral.

The Gothic Square also houses the oldest restaurant in Barcelona and the second oldest restaurant in the entirety of Spain: Can Culleretes , which dates back to 1786.

7. Visit Casa Batlló

Casa Batlló

Considered one of Antoni Gaudí’s greatest masterpieces, Casa Batlló (also known as Casa dels ossos which means ‘ House of Bones’ ) is a remodeled house in the center of Barcelona.

The remarkable building is designed to look as though it has been constructed from skulls and bones and uses colors inspired by the ocean.

Visitors can enter the building to see yet more impressive work from Gaudí, who also designed the interior of the house.

8. Walk Down Passeig de Gràcia

Passeig de Gràcia

Passeig de Gràcia is one of the most popular avenues in Barcelona, housing some of the city’s key sights such as Casa Batlló and Casa Milà, as well as markets, museums, and some of the city’s best restaurants.

As well as being regarded for its incredible architecture, Passeig de Gràcia is also renowned for its shopping scene, with some of the most prestigious brands found lining the street.

Getting From Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port

If your cruise starts or ends in Barcelona, you’ll need to have a way to get to and from the airport and cruise terminal.

There are three main ways to travel between Barcelona Airport and the cruise port: by taxi, train, or bus.

✔️ Taxis to the cruise port from the airport typically take around 15 minutes and cost around €40. It’s by far the most convenient way to reach the cruise terminal.

✔️ There are no direct trains between the airport and the cruise terminal. Therefore you will need to take the train from the airport to the city center and then from there take either the metro or a bus to the cruise port.

✔️ Like with trains, there are no direct buses between the airport and the cruise port so you will need to take a bus to the metro and then the metro to the cruise port.

When you reach the entrance to the cruise terminal after catching the bus or train, you will then need to take the Blue Bus shuttle if your cruise ship is stationed on Adossat Quay.

Journeying from the airport by bus or train can easily take around an hour.

Hiring a shuttle is the easiest and most carefree way to travel between the airport and the cruise terminal.

🚙 Book a transfer between the cruise port and the airport

Places to Stay Near Barcelona Cruise Port

There are a number of highly rated hotels only a short taxi ride away from Barcelona Cruise Port.

InterContinental Barcelona is only a 12-minute taxi ride from the World Trade Centre pier or a 15-minute drive from Adossat Quay. The comfortable hotel has an outdoor roof terrace featuring a pool, sun loungers, and a dining area.

Another great option is Barceló Sants . This modern hotel is slightly further away from the cruise port but its fantastic online reviews make it worth the extra 5-minute journey.

Occidental Barcelona 1929 is another highly-rated hotel. Its convenient location in the center of the city not only makes it easy to reach the cruise port, but it’s a great base from which to explore the city itself.

Best Time to Visit Barcelona

Barcelona is generally considered a year-round destination. However, if you’d like to get the best weather for your visit then visiting between May and the end of September is the ideal time.

Barcelona is a popular destination so expect it to get busy in the school holidays and at weekends.

If you want to strike a good balance between good weather and beating the crowds then May and September are ideal times to make your visit.

Barcelona cruise ship terminals are conveniently positioned just a stone’s throw away from the lively city. The port’s own shuttle bus service makes journeying between the cruise port and the city center extremely convenient.

Driver punctual and friendly. Good comment beforehand

Travelled with family and used shuttle direct to and from our destination. Drivers waiting at airport when we landed and at cruise terminal when we returned. Both drivers polite and professional. No complaints ,would use this service again.

Recommendations to all my friends excellent service thanks

Excellent for the money very cheap

On time, friendly

On time & friendly, didn’t get lost

Our experience with Shuttle Direct was amazing. When flying into Barcelona our fight was delayed 4 hours and we thought that the driver would not be there to pick us up. We had no way of letting the company know of the delay since the numbers provides online do not work. To our amazement our driver had been waiting for us when we came out of customs. William was just an amazing individual he set us at ease and told us the main thing was that we arrived safely. Our second experience when transferring from the apartment to the pier was just as positive. Jose was very puntual and friendly. Our return to the airport was just as positive. We will use Shuttle Direct again. My only feedback is that there should be a way to contact them maybe via email or something if there is an issue.

Pricing was very reasonable and it was easy to complete the transaction.

Hassle free Turned up on time Driver was polite and informative , Did what it said on the tin

barcelona-tourist-guide.com  has all the info you need regarding transport from terminals A,B,C and D to the city or elsewhere. Sorry but this is using GOOGLE!!!!! LOL!

I was in Barcelona yesterday and did not see any of the distictive black and yellow taxis at the terminal.

Thanks

Yes there are usually lots of taxis next to the ship and there is a proper taxi rank at each of the terminals.

The shuttle drops you off about 1000 metres before La Rambla.

We got wet in March after getting of Iona shuttle so we got a taxi back to the ship after Pauline did some shopping on La Rambla.

It was a proper drop off area and it took us 10 minutes walking in the rain to reach the bottom of La Rambla.

Thanks Graham, thats exactly the info I needed. We'd like to get a taxi dorect from the ship if possible rather than having to waste time on the shuttle.

My apologies, a different shuttle and different cruise line we were dropped at the bottom of La Rambla, years ago though

That may be dependant on which time of day/day of the week it is and how many other ships are in port at the same time.

All I know is that there were no taxis lined up yesterday.

P&O also used to drop of near to the bottom of Las Ramblas but it was a long time ago but we like walking so usually walk to Las Ramblas and back if it is not raining.

We have always seen a plenty of taxis around the terminals in Barcelona but have  ever bothered with them.

We have sailed in and out of Barcelona 24 times and there has always been lots of taxis at the various terminals for Royal Caribbean,NCL and P&O.

That was unfortunate for you yesterday.

You can pre book a taxi to avoid queues if busy. They stand outside the terminal with your name on a card. Depends on docking on time though, although I suppose you can call them if delayed and have never been unable to dock due to weather at this port.

No I didn't - didn't even look at that channel so no idea what was on. To be honest I have hardly watched any TV

OK, I did check the Sport24 schedules and the Greman GP is listed for the 19th June so it should be, satellite reception permitting.

Quick Question please,

Do the shuttle buses run on a night-time when your ship is docked overnight in Barcelona, or would we need a taxi.

On Iona 5th November 2022 overnight, only ever done daytrips.

amajaa

Haven't been since just before Covid but the shuttle always dropped off about a 5 minute walk from Las Ramblas

Thank you, so would you be able to come back to the ship for lunch get changed and then go back out on the shuttle again, into Las Ramblas for the night-time.

Slightly off topic,  but do not go to the Ramblas at night time.  Just a tourist rip off. Go to the Gothic Quarter,  or one of the residential areas for a more authentic (and cheaper) experience.

We are currently on Britannia overnight in Barcelona. The photo is from today's Horizon & gives shuttle bus details. Hope this helps.

There is a bus run by the Port of Barcelona called ‘the Blue Bus’,it does a circular route from the terminals to the Columbus Monument one minute from La Rambla.

It costs €3 one way €4.5 return,,pay the driver, cash only.

The bus is also adapted for wheelchair users with a hydraulic ramp.

We were overnight in March from Iona. If I remember rightly the buses were only to about midnight..

We haven't been since before Covid so tbh I wouldn't like to tell you you could just in case it does take slightly longer now but I don't see why not. See answers above possibly which might help more.

Sagrada Familia is a fair walk from where the shuttle bus drops off. We got a taxi back and it cost 12 euros (metred) last october. Ask for a rough price with driver it was probably a good 40 minute walk to las ramblas from the ship where we docked , not recommended.

Barcelona port shuttle bus schedule

I see that the shuttle bus that runs between the port terminal and town does not run on a set schedule but on demand, depending on ships arriving and leaving. https://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/en/faq/cruise-ship-terminals/shuttle-bus-barcelona-cruise-terminal.html

We will be embarking in Barcelona and then spending a night there before sailing out the next day. We’d like to spend much of that embarkation day in town and head back to the ship later in the evening. We’ll also be doing our own thing in town the day of departure and want to make sure we leave enough time to get back.

Does anyone know roughly what to expect from the shuttle in terms of hours and frequency? Does it run in the evenings? If no ship is departing or arriving, how often does it run? We’re going next month, which I assume is not peak season, docking in terminal D.

Any reason why you won't use a taxi? We found this worked great for us.

We’re cheap! [emoji1] We’ll use a taxi to get from the hotel to the ship with our luggage but we’re hoping to take advantage of the shuttle after that.

EnricM

So you know...

1.) Shuttle bus takes you as far into the centre as the Columbus Statue, then either walk -if the hotel is close- or take metro/bus. Shuttle is 3-4€, bus/metro is 2.20€ (single ticket)... so say you're two pax: it's going to cost you ~13€ (*)

2.) A taxi to anywhere in the centre shouldn't cost you more than 20€ (incl. additional charges)

(*) If you need to transfer to a second bus to reach your destination note that you'll need a second ticket -unless you were to purchase initially a T-10 travelcard, but not knowing your particulars I can't advise that.

4cats4me

Just take a taxi. It’s quick and easy.

Explore What the Barcelona Cruise Port Has To Offer

B arcelona is a historic city in Spain with plenty of tourism appeal . It is located in the Northeastern Mediterranean coast of mainland Spain. The city is filled with exciting things to do and unique experiences. Barcelona is an area of Spain that has a thriving art culture and welcoming locals. The city is quite expansive, so tourists traveling there should do their research to sort through all the options in the area . Some of the most popular things in Barcelona include top notch cuisine, stunning architecture and culturally significant landmarks.

Cruisers that have a port day in Barcelona are in for a great time. The city is known for its beautiful seaside views, nightlife and striking landscapes. Although many travelers say that longer visits work best, tourists can still explore Barcelona during shorter stays. An amazing port day in Barcelona may even inspire cruisers to visit Barcelona for a longer stay . Here is everything travelers need to know before visiting the Barcelona cruise port.

Is the Barcelona Cruise Port Popular?

Barcelona is a top tourism destination in Europe, so it is no surprise that travelers aim to visit. The city provides a quite walkable and welcoming environment. Over 800 cruises and 2.5 million cruise passengers visit Barcelona each year. The port has become quite popular with travelers. It has distinct areas that establish it as a major port. To better handle cruise crowds, Barcelona has moved cruise ships to its less central pier.

The Moll d’Adossat pier (officially, Port de Barcelona) is now the primary cruise port. This change means travelers now have a short commute to the city center. The change may seem like an inconvenience to travelers, but it also helps to avoid excessive tourism, pollution and crowds. There are seven cruise terminals within the main cruise port of Barcelona. Each terminal (A, B , C, D and E) offers its own amenities, but in general the port is quite modern and popular.

What Cruise Lines Dock at Barcelona’s Cruise Port?

The Barcelona cruise port has plenty of terminals, which holds space for up to seven cruise ships a day. Its high yield for cruise ships and local offerings make it a popular port. There is an array of cruise lines that visit Barcelona’s cruise port. This means that travelers have a huge assortment of cruise lines to choose from for their perfect getaway. These cruise lines include Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Virgin Voyages, Disney, MSC, Seabourn, Oceania, Viking Ocean, Costa, Norwegian, Regent Seven Seas, Azamara, Cunard, Windstar, Silverseas, Holland America, Explora Journeys, Sea Cloud, Ponant and Lindblad cruises.

Things To Do in Barcelona

Barcelona is filled with grand architectural gems, so many tourists enjoy simply walking around. The Gothic Quarter (or Barri Gotic) is an area that is known as the heart of the old city. Because the area dates back to a time before automobiles, the area has been urban planned for walking. This means that travelers will have no problem getting around on foot. Many of the popular tourist’s sites in the city can be reached on foot, once travelers get to the area.

But there is plenty more for travelers to do during their short exploration of Barcelona. Some of the most popular local attractions include the Barcelona Aquarium, Maritime Museum, the Barcelona Cathedral, Casa Batlló and Park Güell. Another popular attraction is La Rambla. La Rambla is the famous Barcelona street that can help travelers get to know the local culture and provide a place to leisurely walk. The street is a nice pedestrian area filled with restaurants, vendors, bars and great photo opportunities.

Transportation

Getting to the central areas of Barcelona is not difficult for travelers since it is an easily accessible tourist destination. Cruisers should actually have an easy time getting around. There is a cruise shuttle bus (called the Blue Bus) that is dedicated for cruise passengers, which stops off around La Rambla. This bus goes between the Barcelona cruise port terminals to town and runs on a daily schedule.

Travelers should be able to catch the bus around every 15 minutes. The Barcelona cruise port can also be reached by taxi. This option is best for travelers who venture out of central areas and need transportation back to the port. The transportation system at the Barcelona port is quite efficient. So, travelers should not have problems catching a ride since buses and taxis are managed to meet the needs of visiting cruise ships.

One of the most popular cruise ports in the world just got an important makeover

  • One of the most popular cruise ports in the world just got an environmental makeover.
  • PortMiami is now equipped with shore power, which allows ships to plug into giant electrical outlets.
  • The technology allows cruise ships to kill their engines while docked, reducing emissions and noise.

Insider Today

The cruise ship capital of the world unveiled its new shore power system this week, an innovative energy source that will help curb the industry's negative climate impacts.

Cruise ships docking at PortMiami are now able to plug into massive electrical outlets instead of running their diesel engines while idle.

Large commercial vessels typically keep their engines running while docked to ensure crew members and passengers who stay on board have access to electricity and other amenities. One cruise ship running its engine at port can use as much energy as 10,000 households in one day, The Miami Herald reported .

The Florida port saw more than 7 million cruise passengers pass through in 2023, a record-breaking figure for the busy cruise hub.

Shore power utilizes the local land-based power grid. The Miami apparatus is a collaboration between Miami-Dade County, Florida Power & Light Company, and several large cruise companies.

The project cost an estimated $125 million and was funded by grants and contributions, including from the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Florida Department of Transportation, Cruise Hive, a trade publication, reported .

Related stories

The energy comes from individual substations built by Florida Power & Light, which are installed at multiple terminals throughout the port, according to The Herald.

Shore power will help cut emissions and noise pollution , the outlet reported. MiamiPort has 16 megawatts available for cruise ships, and each vessel requires anywhere from eight to 13 megawatts per docking, port director Hydi Webb told The Herald.

MiamiPort did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

Monday marked the grand unveiling of PortMiaimi's shore power system. Executives from five cruise lines — Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Virgin, Norweigen , and MSC — attended, according to media reports.

The port's shore power rollout is quick. Three ships per cruise line will be able to plug into the substations starting this week, The Herald reported.

A Carnival ship was the first vessel to connect on Monday, according to Cruise Hive. The company did not immediately respond to BI's request for comment.

While 30% of global cruise ships have shore power capability, less than 30 ports are equipped to serve such ships, according to a 2023 report from the Cruise Lines Industry Association.

But more and more ports appear to be ready for the change. The Port of Seattle recently announced that it will require all cruise ships homeported there to use shore power by 2027.
