Key Takeaways

  • Oral health affects your teeth, gums and overall health.
  • There are two types of mouthwashes: therapeutic mouthwashes for addressing oral health concerns (such as reducing plaque and gingivitis, preventing cavities or alleviating oral pain) and cosmetic mouthwashes for freshening breath or whitening teeth.
  • Look for mouthwash ingredients based on what you want to prevent or treat.
  • Look for the American Dental Association's Seal of Acceptance when selecting an over-the-counter mouthwash brand.
  • Mouthwash can help remove dental plaque, but it is not a substitute for regular brushing and flossing.

Why Is Oral Hygiene Important?

Oral health touches every aspect of our lives, including how we speak, smile and express ourselves. However, it is often overlooked.

Considered to be "a window into the health of your body" by the American Dental Association, the mouth serves as a crucial indicator for overall health.

The mouth is filled with bacteria, including many that are perfectly harmless, but it can also be a breeding ground for bad bacteria to cause health issues.

"The mouth (is) the gateway to our lungs and our digestive tract , and diseases affecting the mouth have the potential, therefore, to directly affect organs and systems throughout the body," says Dr. Julius N. Manz, director of the dental hygiene program at San Juan College in Farmington, New Mexico, and a spokesperson for the American Dental Association.

Because the mouth allows us to chew and eat, poor oral health can also affect our ability to eat healthy foods to maintain a strong and healthy body, Manz adds.

Some of the most common oral diseases include cavities ( tooth decay ), gum (periodontal) disease and oral cancer .

What Mouthwash Can Help With

Mouthwash can help with several aspects of oral health and hygiene, including:

  • Freshening bad breath . Some mouthwashes contain ingredients that neutralize odor-causing bacteria. However, Dr. Edmond Hewlett, a consumer advisor for the American Dental Association and a professor at the UCLA School of Dentistry in Los Angeles, adds that bad breath can be caused by many things, including larger cavities or medical conditions, like uncontrolled diabetes , which need further treatment.
  • Reducing plaque and gingivitis . Plaque buildup on the teeth can lead to gingivitis, which is mild inflammation of the gums. Some mouthwashes contain antibacterial ingredients to reduce plaque buildup and prevent gingivitis.
  • Preventing cavities . Mouthwash with fluoride can help strengthen tooth enamel.
  • Relieving dry mouth . Mouthwash may contain a moisturizing agent to increase saliva production. Dry mouth can cause pain during speaking and swallowing due to loss of lubricating ability, which can lead to malnourishment and possibly speech impediments, Manz says.
  • Soothing oral irritations . If you have a canker sore or mouth ulcer, for example, you may seek mouthwash with soothing ingredients for relief.
  • Promoting overall oral health . Regular use of mouthwash, in addition to brushing and flossing your teeth, can reduce bacteria in your mouth and promote overall oral hygiene.

Types of Mouthwashes

Therapeutic mouthwash vs. cosmetic mouthwash.

There are two types of mouthwashes available:

  • Therapeutic mouthwashes. Formulated with specific active ingredients aimed at addressing oral health concerns, therapeutic mouthwashes are designed to provide clinical benefits such as reducing plaque and gingivitis, preventing cavities or alleviating oral pain .
  • Cosmetic mouthwashes. These mouthwashes are largely used to freshen breath or whiten teeth by removing surface stains. They provide temporary benefits and don’t address underlying oral health concerns.

Mouthwash ingredients

When shopping for a mouthwash, what ingredients you look for depends on what condition you’re trying to prevent or treat.

Common options include:

  • Alcohol-free mouthwash does not contain alcohol and often uses gentler ingredients, like essential oils, to fight bacteria.
  • Antibiotic or antibacterial mouthwash targets and kills bacteria in the mouth. It’s used to treat bacterial oral infections and is typically prescribed by a dentist or health care provider for short-term use.
  • Antiseptic mouthwash has antimicrobial properties. It’s designed to reduce the growth of bacteria in the mouth, helping to prevent oral infections and improve overall oral health. Chlorhexidine mouthwash is a powerful antiseptic sometimes prescribed for short-term use for specific oral conditions like advanced gum disease (periodontitis).
  • Fluoride mouthwash is used for additional protection against cavities. Mouthwashes containing fluoride are often recommended for those with high risk of cavities or with weakened enamel.
  • Hydrogen peroxide mouthwash has a whitening and anti-plaque effect. While home whitening products , like teeth strips, are more effective in lifting stains, these mouthwashes often have other ingredients that may help with decay and gum disease.
  • Essential oils like peppermint may be added to help with bad breath.

Mouthwash Brands

Below are some well-known OTC mouthwash brands. Certain products have received the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance, which certifies that the product has met a strict list of guidelines established by the organization’s Council on Scientific Affairs; have undergone clinical and/or laboratory studies demonstrating safety and efficacy; and have had a review of product category requirements. Learn more about ADA’s Seal of Acceptance .

  • Key ingredients (for inhibiting bacterial growth and whitening): hydrogen peroxide .

Oral Hygiene Guidelines

Many tooth and gum problems can be easily prevented:

  • Brush teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste. Replace a used toothbrush every three months.
  • Clean between teeth every day with floss or a water flosser.
  • Eat a balanced diet and limit sugary snacks and drinks.
  • Don't use tobacco products .

While mouthwash plays a role in removing dental plaque, it is not a substitute for brushing and flossing.

When Should I See a Health Professional?

The ADA recommends you see an oral health professional if you experience any of the following:

  • Pain or swelling in your mouth, face, jaw or neck.
  • Gums that are puffy, bleed when you brush or floss.
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing.
  • Always feeling parched.
  • Spots or sores that last a week or longer.

Avoid self-treating if symptoms persist. If you’re experiencing an urgent condition, refer to your doctor immediately.

"Your dentist can help prevent oral problems from occurring in the first place and catch those that do occur in the early stages, while they are easy to treat," Manz says.

Mouthwash can be beneficial when used as directed, but excessive or improper use may have adverse effects. For example, some mouthwashes contain alcohol, which could cause dry mouth or irritation with excessive use.

To use mouthwash effectively, generally follow these steps:

  • After you brush and floss, pour the recommended or prescribed amount of mouthwash into a clean cup.
  • Rinse your mouth for 30 to 60 seconds, swishing it around thoroughly.
  • Do not swallow the mouthwash; spit it out in the sink when finished.
  • Avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes or more after using mouthwash to allow the products' active ingredients to take effect.

Follow packaging instructions, as recommended use of some mouthwashes may vary.

Yes, mouthwash does expire. Expired mouthwash may have reduced effectiveness or altered taste. Check the expiration date on the packaging before use.

It’s recommended to use mouthwash after you brush and floss your teeth.

The burning sensation when using mouthwash is often attributed to the presence of alcohol or other active ingredients like menthol that have a minty taste. Using an alcohol-free mouthwash or another mouthwash with gentler ingredients may help alleviate discomfort.

Talk with your dentist if the irritation or burning sensation continues, especially if you’re prone to oral issues.

Though swallowing a small amount of mouthwash accidentally on occasion is unlikely to cause harm, swallowing large quantities – especially mouthwash containing active therapeutic ingredients like alcohol or fluoride – can cause abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea or vomiting. In severe cases, consuming large amounts of mouthwash could lead to alcohol poisoning.

Seek medical attention immediately if you or someone else ingests significant amounts of mouthwash.

Methodology

To rank the Best OTC Medicines and Health Products, U.S. News partnered with The Harris Poll, a global market research and consulting firm with more than 65 years of experience conducting surveys. For the 2024 rankings, The Harris Poll randomly assigned 132 over-the-counter product groups to 354 pharmacists and 122 dermatologists who practice in the U.S. and asked them to rank their top three brands. In the end, more than 900 brands were included in the comprehensive survey. Brands included in the survey have products in their respective categories that can be purchased without a prescription. Brand popularity was a factor, and the survey only included brands with a large number of internet reviews or high search volumes.

Pharmacists and dermatologists selected their top three brands in each product category assigned to them. Each top-ranked brand received 5 points, the second-place brand was awarded 3 points and the third-place winner earned 1 point. All unranked brands were given 0 points. The results were then rescaled so the winner in each category scored 100 points, and the other brands were scored along this 100-point scale. Brands were then ranked according to the total amount of points they received. Scores are rounded to the nearest whole number, which occasionally results in brands displaying identical scores but different ranks. Category winners and brands that were statistically tied with the category winner were given an award as long as their nominal score was not below another brand that did not earn an award. Brands with a score of 85 or higher received a Gold award. Brands that were statistically tied with the winner but had a score lower than 85 received a Silver award. See our full methodology here .

6 dentist-approved mouthwashes to fight bad breath

Mouthwashes have ingredients like CPC and sodium fluoride which can help your tooth and gum health

Rinsing with a mouthwash can give your mouth a cool, fresh feeling, but how important is it? Does it really lead to better health outcomes for your teeth and gums, and is it as important as toothpaste and floss ? Overwhelmingly, yes, according to the dentists we spoke to.

There are two different kinds of mouthwash: cosmetic, which masks bad breath, and therapeutic, which serves clinical purposes like attacking bacteria or plaque. “When used correctly,” explains Dr. Sheri Doniger , an Illinois-based dentist, “therapeutic mouthwashes have been clinically effective in reducing dental biofilm accumulation,” as well as treating halitosis and periodontal diseases, such as gingivitis and periodontitis.

SKIP AHEAD Best mouthwashes | Should you use mouthwash before or after brushing?

To help you find mouthwash that fits your needs, we talked to Doniger and other experts about which ingredients matter most, and for whom. We focused on six therapeutic mouthwashes in this guide, because of their tangible health benefits.

cvs travel mouthwash

select Water flossers versus dental floss: What's the difference?

How to pick a mouthwash.

Each expert we spoke to recommended buying a mouthwash with the ADA Seal of Acceptance . “You can’t go wrong” with an ADA Seal mouthwash, said Dr. Edmond Hewlett , a professor at the UCLA School of Dentistry, because they’ve been “scientifically evaluated to be effective.” They also noted that your dentist can help the best mouthwash for your needs.

As for cosmetic vs. therapeutic mouthwashes, cosmetic mouthwashes “may temporarily control bad breath and leave behind a pleasant taste, but have no chemical or biological application beyond their temporary benefit,” according to the ADA. They may be a great option after a particularly garlicky meal, but they won’t fight the root causes of periodontal disease, like plaque or gingivitis.

On the other hand, therapeutic mouthwashes, which we recommend below, have active ingredients that can kill bacteria, control plaque or bad breath, provide more fluoride to the teeth and otherwise help improve dental health.

Here are some common ingredients that experts we spoke to highlighted, and how they can help improve dental health:

Cetylpyridinium chloride , or CPC, is found in mouthwashes as an antiseptic ingredient — Doniger told us it “kills bacteria by reducing plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation.” CPC is part of a class of compounds found in many household cleaners, like detergents and disinfectant sprays, according to Hewlett.

Sodium fluoride: Fluorinated mouthwashes can help “decrease oral decay, strengthen tooth enamel and increase enamel remineralization,” Doniger said. The active ingredient, sodium fluoride, is a common ingredient in toothpaste, but you can find it in mouthwashes too.

Chlorine dioxide is an ingredient used for halitosis (bad breath), since it can reduce mouth bacteria that produce sulfur, according to Doniger.

Menthol, eucalyptol and thymol are derived from various plants and essential oils. These ingredients contribute to the minty fresh flavor that people like in their mouthwashes, but also have some antiseptic properties too, Hewlett says.

Alcohol is an astringent, so it draws out moisture, which Hewlett says can provide an extra clean feeling in your mouth.

Hydrogen peroxide is an oxygenating ingredient that can help with “wound healing and decreasing inflammation from periodontal disease or an infection around the crown of the tooth,” Doniger told us. Hydrogen peroxide can also have a whitening effect on the teeth, but Hewlett says that the impact is minimal since the concentration is low in these mouthwashes.

You can read more about mouthwashes on the ADA website .

Best mouthwashes to consider.

The experts we spoke to recommended looking for the ADA Seal of Acceptance when purchasing a mouthwash, so we rounded up these therapeutic mouthwashes from notable brands that have the seal and serve a variety of dental needs. The following options are available over-the-counter at popular retailers.

ACT Anticavity Fluoride Rinse

This anticavity mouthwash contains sodium fluoride as its active ingredient, as well as antiseptic ingredients like menthol and CPC. The ADA says the mouthwash “is safe and has shown efficacy in helping to prevent tooth decay.”

ACT Anticavity Fluoride Rinse

Biotene Dry Mouth Oral Rinse

According to the ADA , this mouthwash “is safe and has shown efficacy in temporarily relieving dry mouth symptoms.” Thus, this mouthwash doesn’t contain alcohol and has a formula that the brand says “soothes and lubricates,” dry mouth for up to four hours.

Biotene Dry Mouth Oral Rinse

Listerine Total Care Anticavity Mouthwash

This mouthwash contains several ingredients that the dentists we spoke to highlighted: The active ingredient sodium fluoride fights cavities and menthol, eucalyptol and thymol have antiseptic properties. The ADA says the mouthwash “is safe and has shown efficacy in helping to prevent tooth decay.”

Listerine Total Care Anticavity Mouthwash

Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash

This mouthwash’s ingredients include eucalyptol, menthol and thymol — which provide antiseptic properties — and it also contains alcohol, which can contribute to an overall clean mouth feel. The rinse “is safe and has shown efficacy in helping to prevent and reduce gingivitis (and plaque above the gumline),” according to the ADA .

Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash

Tom's Alcohol-Free Children's Anticavity Fluoride Rinse

Formulated for children’s use, this alcohol-free mouthwash uses the active ingredient sodium fluoride, which can help prevent cavities and strengthen teeth. The ADA says the rinse “is safe and has shown efficacy in helping to prevent tooth decay.”

Tom's Alcohol-Free Children's Anticavity Fluoride Rinse

Tom's Alcohol-Free Children's Anticavity Fluoride Rinse

Closys non-irritating rinse.

This alcohol-free mouthwash “is safe and has shown efficacy in helping to reduce bad breath,” according to the ADA . The rinse contains chlorine dioxide, so it can decrease the number of bacteria producing sulfur in your mouth, Doniger told us above.

CloSYS Non-Irritating Rinse

select These manual toothbrushes are ADA accepted and use design features like angled bristles.

Should you use mouthwash before or after brushing.

People often wonder whether to use a manual or electric toothbrush , floss or rinse first, said Hewlett, but the order doesn’t matter too much. In fact, using mouthwash isn’t necessarily “a standard part of recommended maintenance.” Flossing and brushing with fluoride toothpaste for two minutes is enough to “accomplish everything you need to accomplish as far as keeping your teeth clean,” Hewlett said. Though the common “traditional” recommendation, Hewlett said, is for people to floss first, then brush, then rinse with a therapeutic mouthwash — Doniger recommends using mouthwash after brushing

Though in certain cases, mouthwash can be an important tool. For example, if you have an acidic drink like orange juice, the juice can “remove enamel molecules.” Brushing your teeth after said acidic drink can “hasten the erosion of enamel” over time, Hewlett said. He suggested that if you want that clean feeling after consuming acidic foods or drinks, mouthwash might be a good alternative. Some people also may need prescription mouthwashes or need to rinse more often for certain health reasons — dentists might suggest rinsing twice a day to treat halitosis and dry mouth or to induce enamel remineralization, Doniger said.
