Da Nang tourism sees strong growth over 25 past years

1 January, 2022 marked the 25 th anniversary of Da Nang’s recognition as centrally-governed city. Over the past 25 years, the tourism industry has become a spearhead economic sector, and it has been   a   significant   driver   of   economic   and   social   development.   It   has stimulated economic   growth   by   generating   income,   employment,   investment   and   exports.   It   has also generated   valuable   spin-‑off   benefits,   including   preservation of cultural   heritage.

Recording impressive growth

Da Nang has seen a boom in tourist accommodation establishments over the past 25 years. The number of such venues increased from 58 with a combined total of 1,948 rooms in 1997 to 1,231 with 44,505 rooms in total till date, of which, 212 are between 3 and 5 star ratings with 26,050 rooms in total, accounting for about 59% of the city’s total hotel rooms..

In 2019, the total number of visitor arrivals to Da Nang reached 8.6 million, of whom, 3.5 million were foreigners. The economic contribution of tourism has been estimated at VND 30,973 billion. Da Nang now serves 496 flights every week on 35 international routes and 662 flights a week on 10 domestic routes.

In the 2016-2019 period, the tourism industry has witnessed strong growth with numerous quality tourism products and services that have received high praise from visitors. Da Nang’s tourist arrivals have experienced an average annual growth of 16.73% between 2016 and 2019 while the city has enjoyed annual average growth of 24.6% in tourism earnings during the period. Tourism's contribution to the city’s economy GDP has shown a steady rise between 2016 and 2019, the sector has significantly contributed to the city’s GDP earnings. Tourism has been an engine of economic growth in Da Nang. The share of the city’s GDP contribution from the tourism sector was 23.72% in 2016, 24.1% in 2017, 26.35% in 2018, and 31.4% in 2019. The sector also created employment opportunities for 50,963 people in 2019, representing a 2.2-fold increase from 2016.

Significant rise in tour operators and guides

Mrs Truong Thi Hong Hanh, the Director of the municipal Department of Tourism attributed positive results produced by the tourism sector to the city's efforts to build a synchronous and modern infrastructure system and issue support mechanisms and policies to attract strategic investors to put their money in tourism projects. Included were such domestic business as Sun Group, VinaCapital, Vingroup, BRG, and DHC group in addition to international investors like Intercontinental, Hyatt, Pullman, Sheraton, Marriott, Hilton, and Novotel.

Most notably, Sun Group has invested in such large tourism projects as Sun World Ba Na Hills tourist area with many impressive architectural works, including the world-class cable cars, Vang (Golden) Bridge and Fantastic indoor entertainment area in addition to attractive cultural events like flower and beer festivals, and carnivals. Especially, boasting a world-class facilities and 5-star standard service, InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort possesses a huge collection of world-prestigious awards, helping the city promote its tourism globally.

According to tourism experts, Da Nang has emerged as attractive destination for domestic and international travelers thanks to its rich and varied tourism products. In addition, the city is now home to numerous tourist attractions such as Nui Than Tai Hot Spring Park, Helio Center entertainment area, and Mikazuki Spa & Hotel Resort. Da Nang has also strengthened the city's brand and identity by highlighting its international-level events such as the International Fireworks Festival, the 5 th Asian Beach Games (ABG 5) in 2016, the APEC Economic Leaders' Week (AELW) in November 2017. The city has also been honoured with international wards, and the most prominent of which is ‘Asia’s Leading Festival and Event Destination’ in 2016. Hence, Da Nang has consistently strengthened its position on the world tourism map.

Acting as an engine of economic growth

Mrs Truong Thi Hong Hanh remarked that the real importance of tourism lies not only in the fact that it contributes to the growth of the economy, in general, but also in the fact that the sector can give an impetus to the city’s growth, create jobs and improve the welfare of local residents. The Da Nang government has also developed action plans and created short and long-term approaches for sustainable tourism development. Da Nang has become more attractive in the eyes of domestic and international tourists due to the friendliness and hospitality of local residents.

Mrs Hanh attributed the attractiveness of the city to the consensus among citizens and members of local government, thereby making the city a more favourable destination for domestic and international tourists, as well as driving tourism growth in recent years.

Mr. Cao Tri Dung, the Chairman of the Da Nang Tourism Association, attributed success in the tourism industry to efforts and determination of the entire political system and creative city leaders with breakthrough thinking. In addition, the reasons behind the sector’s success are due to new attractive tourism products and the city’s initiative to establish close links with other central localities to promote the development of tourism and jointly create their special regional products.

Mrs Dung said that Da Nang boasts great potential for tourism development with diversified and high-quality tourism services that can be able to receive a maximum capacity of 25-30 million tourists per year. Da Nang is expected to welcome its potential tourists arrived by air, land and sea in the future.

Currently, the city's tourism industry is recovering from the impact of the COVID-19 crisis and adapting to a new normal. Hopefully, the tourism will witness a strong rebound in 2022 and the years ahead.

Tourist arrivals in Da Nang in H1 surpass pre-pandemic levels

More than 3.5 million tourists visited Da Nang City in central Vietnam in the first half of 2023, reaching 83 percent of the city’s 2023 target, exceeding the pre-pandemic figure, and up 2.1-fold year on year.

Among the tourist arrivals, the number of international visitors accounted for some 930,000.

Also, revenue from tourism activities in the first half totaled VND6.231 trillion (US$263 million), soaring 99 percent over one year ago.

These figures were released by the Da Nang administration at the opening session of a People’s Council meeting on Monday.

Ho Ky Minh, vice-chairman of the municipal administration, told the meeting that tourism and related services continued to be the driving force of the coastal city’s economic growth.

The city’s tourism sector has been bouncing back, with scores of events, festivals , and new travel products being launched to woo tourists.

The success of the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival 2023 ( DIFF 2023 ) and the upcoming summer festival, entitled ‘Wow Da Nang,’ have significantly contributed to the coastal city’s efforts to attract domestic and international visitors, Minh said.

The DIFF 2023 , taking place between June 2 and July 8 in the city, was organized by the municipal administration with funding from Sun Group, one of Vietnam’s leading multi-sectoral conglomerates, gathering eight teams including Da Nang-Vietnam, the UK, Italy, Poland, France, Australia, Canada, and Finland.

Regarding the upcoming ‘Wow Da Nang’ fest, scheduled to last from July 28 to August 1, it will feature a series of exciting events and activities, including art performances and fashion shows, kite flying, paragliding, rap shows, and a food festival offering both Vietnamese and international dishes.

The official at the meeting added that the city saw its gross regional domestic product (GRDP) in the first half up 3.74 percent versus the 2022 figure and up 13.48 percent against the first half of 2019. ​

Da Nang Welcomes 1.8 Million Visitors In Q1

Da Nang has introduced new tourism products, including a night market and entertainment services to meet the increasing demands of tourists.

The number of visitors to Da Nang in the first quarter of 2019 is estimated at 1.8 million, with arrivals by air increasing 56.5% on-year, Dan Sinh Newspaper reported, citing the municipal Department of Tourism.

Accordingly, Da Nang has upgraded much of its infrastructure and beautified its renowned beaches in preparation to welcome visitors as the year’s peak tourist season approaches.

In addition, Da Nang has provided additional facilities and equipment such as canoes and walkie-talkies to rescue workers at the beaches. It has also published travel information on the city through leaflets in English, South Korean, and Chinese as well as informing accommodation establishments and travel companies on rescue activities, VOV reported. Aside from improving infrastructure, the city is about to launch the annual firework festival and an international balloon display between April and June.

Earlier, Da Nang has introduced new tourism products, including a night market and entertainment services to meet the increasing demands of tourists.

The number of visitors to Da Nang in 2018 increased 15.5% on-year to an estimated 7.6 million, including 2.8 million foreigners, a 23.3% increase from a year earlier, according to the municipal Department of Tourism. The city welcomed 4.7 million domestic holidaymakers, an 11.2% increase from 2017.

Arrivals by sea and air in the reviewed period recorded annual increases of 66% and 48.7%, respectively. Da Nang’s revenue from travel in 2018 was estimated at VN24 trillion (US$1.03 billion), representing an on-year jump of 23.3%.

Da Nang aims to welcome 8.19 million visitors throughout 2019, up 6.9% year-on-year. the figure includes 3.19 million foreigners, an increase of 11%. The tourism sector aims to gross VND27.4 trillion (US$1.18 billion) in revenue, up 13.9% against the previous year.

Analysis: Da Nang In Focus

A key international gateway to Vietnam, Da Nang is seeking to reactivate its tourism industry and position the seaport city as a hub for entrepreneurship, innovation, logistics, finance and culture over the coming decade .

Central to its ambitions is the ongoing development of Da Nang International (DAD), the third largest airport in Vietnam. In line with the rapid expansion of the country’s low-cost market in recent years, capacity at Da Nang surged from 2 million departure seats in 2011 to more than 9.2 million in 2019.

Although pandemic-related travel restrictions have inevitably curtailed growth, the outlook for air traffic in the region remains strong, giving authorities in Da Nang the confidence to push ahead with a series of airport infrastructure investments designed to increase capacity to 28 million passengers and 200,000 tons of cargo per year by 2030.

About The City

Da Nang is the largest city in central Vietnam and one of the country’s most important ports, marking the half-way point between Hanoi in the north and Ho Chi Minh City in the south.

Known for its 30 km stretch of sandy beaches, the city has a burgeoning tourism industry, attracting about 8.7 million visitors in 2019, up by more than 13% on the previous 12 months. South Korea, China and Thailand are all large source markets.

The city is home to more than 60 four- and five-star hotels, including the InterContinental Da Nang Sun Peninsula Resort, which was named the world’s most luxurious resort at the World Travel Awards for five years running between 2014 and 2018.

Da Nang also remains an important sea gateway for the Central Highland region and an east-west economic corridor connecting Vietnam with Laos, Thailand and Myanmar. The city has about 1.16 million residents, with the population forecast to swell to about 1.8 million by the end of the decade.

In March, prime minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc approved a new masterplan that aims to transform the city into the socio-economic centre of the country by 2045. A focus on high-tech industrial clusters is envisaged, alongside investment in science, sport, culture and logistics.

Connectivity Growth

Situated in the western part of the city centre, Da Nang International has a domestic terminal T1, which was put into operation in 2011, and an international terminal T2 inaugurated in 2017.

According to data provided by OAG, the number of departure seats increased from 2 million in 2011 when the airport was connected nonstop to seven domestic and six international points, to 9.2 million in 2019 when flights to 11 domestic and 40 international destinations were available.

Overall, the airport catered to more than 99,000 flights in 2019 with 15.5 million passengers and 40,000 tonnes of cargo—exceeding its planned capacity set for 2020 by 2.5 million.

Flag-carrier Vietnam Airlines and LCC VietJet were the largest operators at DAD in 2019, offering some 2.7 million and 2.4 million departure seats respectively. VietJet’s growth has been a particular highlight, with its capacity from the airport expanding by 26% in 2019 compared with the previous 12 months.

The OAG data shows that domestic destinations accounted for about 56.3% of total capacity from Da Nang in 2019, equating to some 5.2 million seats, while airlines offered some 4 million seas to international points. However, the share of international seats has increased markedly since 2011 when fewer than 51,000 were available, or 2.5% of the airport’s total capacity.

Although COVID-19 lockdowns and travel restrictions in Vietnam have stunted capacity growth over the past 18 months, DAD currently has domestic connectivity to 12 points, as well as scheduled international flights to Busan, Hong Kong, Seoul and Taipei.

Work is also underway to expand T1 to raise capacity to more than 14 million passengers per year by 2025, while there is also a focus on upgrading taxiways and aprons. Overall, Da Nang hopes to be able to accommodate 28 million passengers and 200,000 tons of cargo annually by 2030.

Sustainable Future

While increasing tourism is a priority for Da Nang, achieving growth in a sustainable way is at the heart of the city’s strategy. It was awarded the title National Green City 2017-18 by the World Wide Fund for Nature—one of only 21 cities globally—and is targeting a 25% cut in greenhouse gas emissions compared with 2016 levels.

To help it achieve its goals, the city’s first solar farm is planned for the now-closed Khanh Son Landfill site at a cost of $5 million, which will supply 7.7 million kWh per year to the city’s power grid and reduce carbon emissions each year by nearly 5,000 tons.

Tourism projects are also appraised and environmentally monitored, while the city has implemented a program called ‘Clean up Son Tra’ designed minimize environmental pollution on the Son Tra Peninsula, particularly from plastic waste.

Da Nang targets new international tourism markets

Da nang, a tourism hub in central vietnam, is seeking to attract tourists from india, australia, the philippines, and other places as opposed to traditional markets such as russia and china due to external factors..

Attractive tourist sites coupled with beautiful beaches in the central region are typically popular tourist destinations among Russian and Chinese visitors. However, central localities have received almost no visitors from these two key markets due to the prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict and China’s ongoing zero-COVID policy.

Located in the central region as a tourism hub, Da Nang city is seeking alternative sources of visitors from new markets such as India, which is widely considered a potential tourism market with a population of approximately 1.4 billion.

Currently, an average of roughly 6,000 Indian tourists enter the country every day, 24 times more than previously recorded, according to statistics unveiled by the tourism industry.

Nguyen Nhu Nam, general director of the Vietnam TravelMart Joint Stock Company, revealed that the firm recently received many Indian couples visiting the central region to survey venues for wedding ceremonies at coastal resorts.

“Some of the visiting couples have chosen Da Nang as the venue for their coming wedding,” he said.

Along with exploiting the Indian market, tourism businesses in Da Nang are preparing services such as restaurants and hotels in order to serve this new segment of guests.

According to Nguyen Duc Quynh, chairman of the Da Nang Hotel Association, restaurants designated for Indian guests are typically small, serving between 30 and 60 people. The Da Nang Hotel Association has therefore mapped out a strategy of bringing in Indian chefs to cook unique dishes specifically for Indian tourists.

Along with the Indian market, Da Nang is also targeting a number of other international markets such as Australia and the Philippines. The Asian route development forum 2022 (Routes Asia 2022) which was held in June provides an opportunity for Da Nang to quickly recover and open new international routes to Australia, India, and the Philippines.

The Da Nang Department of Tourism reported that there will be nine airlines operating roughly 2,700 international flights and bringing in about 360,000 passengers to Da Nang between the end of October and March, 2023.

Nguyen Xuan Binh, deputy director of the Da Nang Department of Tourism, said that the central city has adjusted plans to restore and develop the international tourist market to Da Nang in late 2022 and for early 2023. The city’s tourism industry will update to market changes and trends in customer tastes so they are ready to welcome visitors from India, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

According to the official, the city will organise special cultural and tourism events as part of efforts to attract tourists to Da Nang.

“The tourism industry of Da Nang has worked with many tourism businesses and airlines to develop plans for these events. Besides traditional routes, we will promote the opening of new routes from potential markets such as India, Australia, Philippines, Indonesia to the city in the near future,” said Binh.
