Florida stories: a walking tour of pensacola.

Tom Scherberger

Want to explore the cultural, historical, and architectural treasures of Pensacola, Fla.? There’s an app for that.

Just go to  Florida Stories Walking Tours , and download the app created by the  Florida Humanities Council .

With this app you can learn, at your own pace and on your own schedule, what some of Florida’s most unique towns and cities have to offer.

Here’s an overview of what you can experience via the Pensacola app:

Where : Pensacola Number   of   stops : 12 Total   time : 45 minutes Author : Robert Overton Jr., University of West Florida Historic Trust executive director Start :  Pensacola Museum of History

Walking Pensacola

From Spanish explorers in wooden sailing ships to Blue Angel jet fighters, Pensacola’s rich history spans more than 450 years, and is still being written.

The westernmost city in Northwest Florida, it is a time zone away from Peninsular Florida, more Southern than big city Miami or tourist-centric Orlando.

Its nickname "The City of Five Flags" reflects the five governments that have ruled over Pensacola: Spain, France, Great Britain, the Confederate States of America and the United States of America.

The walking tour is compact, centered in the  Seville Historic District  in downtown Pensacola and focusing primarily on the Colonial history of the city, when the British and Spanish fought for control.

Tour Highlights

The tour starts at the three-story  Pensacola Museum of History , in the former City Hall built in 1908.  The quirky collection here includes a 450-year-old anchor and a petrified cat.

Plaza Ferdinand VII  underscores Pensacola’s Colonial history under both the British and Spanish, ending in 1821 when Andrew Jackson and his troops marched across this ground to receive the Spanish flag transferring Florida from Spain to the United States.

Beneath the surface of today’s Seville Square lie the remains of structures from Pensacola’s colonial history from 1756 to 1821, including  Apalachee Indians  who moved here in 1761 after Creeks burned their mission towns, and the British Fort of Pensacola, built by the British in 1775, which enclosed several earlier versions of the fort, including the original  Spanish Fort San Miguel .

St. Michael’s Cemetery , one of the oldest in Florida, is an oak-shaded eight acres with more than 3,000 marked graves marked in French, Spanish and English, with shells nestled next to some the markers suggesting the person buried there may have African or Native American ancestry.

“Well, kill me! Kill me, because if you don’t kill me now, I will come back to recover my clothes, and I will kill you and anyone who is with you.” -- A Creek warrior’s threat during the 7-year war.

Gen. Andrew Jackson and his troops occupied Pensacola three different times, in 1814, 1818 and 1821. Jackson eventually became Florida’s first territorial governor.

Things to Do in Pensacola

The “ World’s Whitest Beaches ” beckon, of course, and if you head there be sure to check out the  Flora-Bama Lounge , a true Florida cultural landmark on  Perdido Key , famous for the annual Interstate Mullet Toss.

Climb the 177 steps up the  Pensacola Lighthouse , the 1859 landmark at the  Pensacola Naval Air Station . Check out as well the  National Naval Aviation Museum .

Plenty of dining options are to be found in and around the  Seville Historic District , including  Jackson’s Steakhouse , in an 1860s building across from Plaza Ferdinand. Or, try  Seville Quarter , a popular entertainment complex opened more than 40 years ago with seven themed rooms under one roof.

Fun Downtown Pensacola Things To Do: an Easy Florida Gulf Coast Trip

Fun Downtown Pensacola Things To Do: an Easy Florida Gulf Coast Trip

I love our hometown, but if I had to pick a new place to live, there are so many things to do in Pensacola, Florida and its islands that we would move there in a heartbeat. That’s not what this is about though. Having gotten to deeply explore the whole Pensacola area I have a great collection of unique things to do in each part of the city.

Pensacola is quite spread out and is very different from cities like Orlando or Naples, FL . I think it’s a mix of a few US cities: Savannah, GA ; Mobile, AL and Portland, OR . It’s very unique, diverse and full of fun activities. Pensacola also is a city of festivals and community events, it’s very LGBTQ inclusive and I love it!

If you have any questions about planning a trip, fun things to do in the Pensacola area or just want to share your own recommendations, please leave a comment or send us a note . We’re always happy to share more!

15 Fun Things to do in Downtown Pensacola

I think most people coming to Pensacola have a goal of making it to the beach, but before you get out to the beautiful barrier islands in the Gulf of Mexico, you have to make a stop in downtown Pensacola. Heck, you can easily spend a few days downtown dining your way around the city, visiting museums and historic sites, and enjoying all kinds of seasonal events and activities in Pensacola and then do the beaches.

Palafox Street

Wander along Palafox Street, the city’s main thoroughfare, lined with boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, and street life from morning until night. This is where you’ll find the Saturday farmers market which covers about five blocks. Also, street performers and artists line the street, both during market times and throughout the day, so it always sounds like a concert, even when it’s just a Tuesday afternoon.

Promenade on Palafox Street Historic Downtown Pensacola Florida 1

Pensacola Little Theater

There may not be a touring Broadway show here at the Pensacola Little Theater , but there are lots of other performances. Community plays, musical theater, local events, and film festivals all happen here. This non-profit theater is in a cool old building at the south end of downtown. It’s even got a bar in the atrium for grabbing a drink when you’re at the Pensacola Little Theater for a performance.

I got to spend several days hanging out in this space for the Stamped Film Festival , and got to know the people running the Little Theater. This is a great organization and they actively support youth and the LGBTQ community. Such a wonderful group!

Panel Discussion at Stamped Film Festival Pensacola Little Theater Florida 1

Historic Seville Square

Explore the historic heart of downtown Pensacola in Seville Square, known for its charming park, historic homes, and oak-lined streets. I really like wandering through this part of the neighborhood in the afternoon because it’s nice and shady. During the Pensacola Seafood Festival, a good portion of the Seville Square area fills up with booths and food vendors. Seville Square stretches to the marina, so you’ll probably end up here if you’re strolling the edge of downtown and the bay.

PS: as you walk around Seville Square and the surrounding streets, you’ll notice that it feels a little like New Orleans. Both Pensacola and Mobile AL were built up during the same period with some of the same people and influences developing the cities.

Wrought Iron Balconies in Historic District Pensacola Florida 2

Pensacola Historic Village

Right next to Seville Square, the Pensacola Historic Village is a collection of historic homes, museums, and gardens that showcase the city’s history, and you’ll be surprised how many have weathered some intense hurricanes. The city likes to tout being older than St Augustine (our hometown), and it is in a way. Pensacola was a settlement before St Augustine was founded in 1565, but it was abandoned and later re-settled. But that means there are some wonderful old buildings and museums.

The Pensacola Historic Village is also where you’ll find the Pensacola Seafood Festival. The festival is loaded with food and music, and it takes over much of the Historic Village area. Hanging out here, whether you’re doing a historic tour or not, is one of the best things to do in Pensacola, especially if you want to see the quiet side of downtown.

Art Booths at Seafood Festival Pensacola Florida 1

Tivoli High House

Tour the Tivoli High House, a historic building that now houses the Pensacola Historical Society and has exhibits on local history, both recent and dating back to the origins of Pensacola as a settlement. Tivoli High House is next to… you guessed it… the Historic Village and Seville Square. This pocket of town really is cool and great to explore with kids and history buffs.

Saenger Theatre

Every part of the United States has their own collection of historic theaters, whether they’re Orpheums, Roxy Theaters or something else. Here in Pensacola, they have the Saenger Theater (sister venue to the Saenger in Mobile, AL ). While you’re in Pensacola, see if you can catch a live performance or concert at the beautifully restored Saenger Theatre, an iconic downtown venue.

There are lots of great places to eat nearby, so you can make it a whole evening’s plan. Have dinner at Angelina’s (remarkable and delicious), see a show, and then go out for dancing and drinks, or just have a nice walk along Palafox Street.

downtown tour pensacola fl

Downtown Pensacola Art Walk

If your timing is right, you can’t miss the monthly Pensacola Gallery Night, where local artists and businesses showcase their talents and wares along Palafox Street. It’s like a farmers market, but in the evening and with mostly art and craftsman products for sale. I feel like there’s always music everywhere in Pensacola, so you’ll no doubt have live music during the art walk too.

Quayside Art Gallery

I really like the Quayside Art Gallery. It’s across the street from the Pensacola Little Theater, so it’s easy to pop in and check out if you’re seeing a show or visiting the Historic Village area. Explore this cooperative art gallery featuring works by local artists, including paintings, sculptures, and more.

Tip: it’s perfectly fine to visit art galleries and treat them like museums even if you’re not in the market to buy art. It’s a great way to learn about the town, the local artists, and to just vibe-check what’s happening in Pensacola.

Quayside Art Gallery and Pensacola Little Theater Historic District Pensacola Florida 1

Downtown Pensacola Street Market

Saturdays in Pensacola mean that the boulevard area of Palafox Street gets turned into a market, both for farmers/beekeepers/mushroom foragers and artisans. It’s not quite as good as the Savannah Farmers Market at Forsyth Park , but it’s pretty great. Shop for unique crafts, jewelry, and locally made products at this open-air market, held on Saturdays from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm.

Saturday Market at Promenade on Palafox Street Historic Downtown Pensacola Florida 1

Hang out in Plaza Ferdinand VII (the central square)

Every city in the south has a cool square with benches, beautiful trees and a bit of history. Visit this historic square and park, where the transfer of Florida from Spain to the United States took place in 1821. For the arts walk afternoons, the square gets taken over by musicians and art booths, but the rest of the time it’s just like a square you’d find in Savannah or Brunswick on the Georgia Coast . There are a lot of similarities between Pensacola and Savannah.

PS: for all the time I spent chilling out here I apparently took zero photos, but it’s a lovely spot.

Pensacola Children’s Museum

We love visiting children’s museums, even as the kids get older. Until they’re teens and too cool for kid stuff, children’s museums can really be a hit and make an adult-focused trip feel more fun for a while (if kids are feeling road-trip-jaded). Bring the family to the Pensacola Children’s Museum , located within the T.T. Wentworth, Jr. Florida State Museum complex. It’s in the same general area of many of the other things to do in Pensacola’s historic district.

Historic Pensacola Trolley Tour

When people come visit us in St Augustine so many do the trolley tour, and I get it. Pensacola has a few too! Take a guided trolley tour to learn about the history and architecture of downtown Pensacola and take a break from walking on a hot day. There are a few trolley options in the historic district actually depending on the time of year. There is a free one provided by the city on select Wednesdays and Fridays, and then there’s the Beach Bum Trolley that operates with a ticketed ride.

Wrought Iron Balconies in Historic District Pensacola Florida 3

Arcadia Mill Archaeological Site

Yes, there are more things to do in Pensacola than just in the historic district near the bay. Discover the ruins of a 19th-century industrial complex just north of downtown, showcasing the area’s history and open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays. The Arcadia Mill Archaeological Site includes old mill works, historic buildings, interpretive displays and volunteers to tell you about the site. Donations are always appreciated as the site doesn’t get a ton of funding, but it’s pretty cool.

downtown tour pensacola fl

Pensacola MESS Hall

The Pensacola MESS Hall is not what you think. It’s not a bunch of cafeteria tables for soldiers, but a science experience, and it’s one of the best things to do in Pensacola with kids. The building is kind of unassuming, and the activities inside aren’t really what you expect. Visit this hands-on science museum for interactive exhibits and learning (you know me, always adding the learning thing into our trips). When you enter, you actually get to do science experiments and mess around with hands-on science concepts. It’s fun and way different than most other activities around downtown Pensacola.

Downtown Pensacola Food Truck Court

There is no shortage of restaurants in downtown Pensacola, but I’m always interested to see what sort of meals can be whipped up in food trucks. There is a pretty neat food truck court downtown, at the south end of Palafox Street, and it’s got everything from tacos to macarons. There’s even a bar in the inside/outside area of the food truck court. It’s the perfect place to eat with kids or if you’re got people with diverse tastes. It’s called the Garden at Palafox & Main and I love it! There’s plenty of shady seating and options for any sort of taste. The perfect example of what can be done to provide lots of food choices in a downtown area.

Food Truck Garden at Palafox and Main downtown Pensacola Florida 1

Where to Stay for a Pensacola Trip

I’ve stayed downtown Pensacola, stayed out at Pensacola Beach and stayed in Gulf Shores for different visits to the city. Depending on the what Pensacola things to do you’re planning, or if your whole goal is actually a beach trip, you’ll want to find a hotel that matches the vibe of your trip. I’ve enjoyed the beach vacation and the work trip to Pensacola, so here’s how I would recommend choosing where to stay.

If you’re planning on seeing a show or participating in a festival downtown, it’s VERY worthwhile to book a hotel in the historic district within a block or two of Palafox Street. The city is very walkable, so whether you’re close to the waterfront or you’re a bit north past Martine Luther King Jr Plaza, anything in this area is a good choice.

Because I’m all about the beach all the time, I like staying ON the beach. There are plenty of wonderful options for staying over at Pensacola Beach. From budget option to beach resorts, you’ll find it all. We do a lot of travel staying at IHG properties (Kimpton, Holiday Inn…) and here I really had a great stay at the Holiday Inn Resort Pensacola Beach. There’s just something about waking up in the morning and walking out onto the sand that I just love.

Clearly there are tons of things to do in Pensacola, Florida. It’s a fun city and I really love the vibe. It’s a wonderfully inclusive destination and is far ahead of the progressive curve of much of Florida. If you have any questions about visiting Pensacola, planning a trip to the Florida Gulf Coast or any other Florida travel, please leave a comment or send us a note . We’re always happy to help and share more!

I was surprised to discover so many fun things to do in downtown Pensacola. Being a beach destination, the historic downtown is actually full of museums, galleries and festivals. Here are 15 interesting things to do in downtown Pensacola that you can easily add to a beach vacation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we hear from guests. If you do not find your question below please contact us.

  • The Logistics
  • The Experience

What if it rains?

Tours take place rain or shine. Please check the local weather forecast for the hours you will be on your tour and dress accordingly. In the event of severe weather we will personally contact you. Your safety is our first concern (other than giving you a unique culinary experience).

Is parking available near the start of the tour?

There is street parking available near all tour starts. Some of it is free all day, some free for two (2) hours, and the rest is paid parking. The tours take 3 to 4 hours. Please be aware of where you are parking and follow the instructions.

Are the routes wheelchair and stroller friendly?

Yes. All routes in downtown Pensacola are navigable by wheelchair and stroller.

Are restrooms available during the tour?

Restrooms are available at each tasting location.

Can I shop during the tour?

We ask that you refrain from shopping during the tour so we may stay on schedule for the tastings. Each restaurant expects us at a specific time so the food may be ready for your when you arrive.

How much walking is involved in the tour?

Tours last 3 hours (give or take). We will walk at a leisurely pace so the tour guide can enliven you with the very interesting culinary history of Pensacola. We will stop at each tasting location for 15-20 minutes each time. Expect to walk between 1 and 2 miles.

How much food can I expect on the tour?

Your culinary experience will serve enough food to fill up most participants.

Is alcohol served during the tour?

No. However, we will be dining in places which have excellent selections of wine and local/regional craft beers. Many are even offering specific pairings with your food. You may separately purchase beer and wine from any dining destination. The City of Pensacola prohibits open containers on the street so this way you can enjoy your libation and finish it in time to move to the next destinations without having to hurry attempting to drink a whole beer of glass of wine.

Are children allowed on the tours?

You bet! We encourage children to take in some of the local history as well as tasting some amazing and diverse food along the way. Parents know their children best so it’s up to them to decide if this tour is appropriate for the ages of their children. Kids under the age of 10 can sample their parent’s food. Children 11 to 14 will have to have a ticket at children’s prices.

Are we just eating food on the tour?

Our tours aren’t just about eating in different restaurants. It is a cultural captivating involvement! Pensacola is the oldest settlement in the United States. It has been under the flags of three European empires, the Confederacy, and the United States. There’s a huge story to be told here about how people lived, how they celebrated, and what they ate. Our historian has done in-depth research, delving into archaeological records, collegiate master’s theses, old neighborhood cookbooks, and spoke with very old Pensacola families to garner information on how we got to where we are today. You won’t find an experience like this anywhere else.

Do I need to purchase a ticket if I’m not eating?

Yes. All guests must purchase a ticket for the tour.

Do I have to purchase tickets in advance? May I pay in cash?

All tickets must be purchased in advance through our website using your credit/debit card.

Are gift certificates available?

Yes. Gift certificates are available by clicking HERE.

Does the tour guide accept gratuities?

Gratuities are not mandatory, but they are greatly appreciated. The standard gratuity in the service industry is 15% to 20%.

Meet Duel Christian

Duel Christian is the founder/historian/and guide for Seville Savories. His maternal great grandfather was an early naval aviator at Pensacola NAS in the early 1930’s. Duel currently lives in the same home he purchased in 1936. His grandmother, Mary Wesley, was a past president of the Pensacola Historical Preservation Society, as well as a curator and tour guide for the Walton House and Quina House Museum. Duel grew up immersed in the deep history of Pensacola. For nearly three decades Duel was a television producer/director. His first job was as a camera operator on a nationally syndicated PBS cooking show, Gourmet Cooking with Earl Peyroux. His job was to get closeup shots on Earl’s hands while he cooked. From there Duel went on to produce/direct over 300 cooking shows on various network affiliates around Northwest Florida/Southern Alabama. Duel has been a freelance writer and was a feature writer for Florida Wildlife Magazine for six years where he developed recipes on cooking game and fish. As a Celtic musician, Duel traveled all over the southeastern U.S. singing and performing Celtic music in pubs and festivals for a couple decades. It was Duel’s love of history, cooking, and performing that lead him to this place. He gets to have an audience, share his love of food and history, and promote local restaurants in his beloved hometown.

"Thank you for all your help with our USS Casa Grande Reunion. We had all good remarks about all of our events.

I had two or three people tell me the Memorial Service was the best one we ever had at our reunions.

You were right on everyhting you told me on the phone. The Museum tour was super. Everyone liked McGuire's on Thursday. It was very interesting to see all that money on the ceiling.

Last I would like to say Beach Bum Trolley did a super job for us. Your drivers were great. I will recommend your trolley service to everyone."

Off-duty police officers to crack down on loud vehicle noises in Downtown Pensacola

by Sarah Gail

WEAR

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Off-duty police officers will soon be in downtown Pensacola giving out tickets for racing, reckless driving and loud car noise violations.

The Community Redevelopment Agency brought up the issue earlier this week. Now the Downtown Improvement Board has put a plan in place.

There will be no warnings, only citations.

"People modify their exhaust to make them louder in order to get attention," Officer Mike Wood said. "People put sound systems in their cars in order to make their stereo systems louder to get attention. Very soon it's going to work to get the attention from police, which is going to be expensive."

Police say they get a lot of complaints from residents and Downtown Pensacola businesses about the issue.

"First of all we're a business and it's very loud and obnoxious and it drives customers away," said Allen Mandel, owner of AJ's Market and Ice Cream.

"People live down there, and Palafox with all the buildings," Officer Dave Partrick said. "It is just like a tunnel. And when you rev those engines, I've stood down there, it's almost unbearable especially with the motorcycles."

To address this problem, the DIB has hired off-duty officers to be in the area handing out tickets.

"We are not going to tolerate it," Officer Wood said. "There will not be any warnings at all, everyone will receive a citation."

Officer Wood says for the most part, people already know what they’re doing is illegal.

"You cannot modify your exhaust anywhere in Florida to make it louder," he said. "That's a clear violation."

Zaytouna Greek & Lebanese Restaurant said goodbye to Pensacola. Here's what took its place

downtown tour pensacola fl

Popular Pensacola Mediterranean restaurant In & Out Kitchen has brought its mouthwatering meat kabobs to the heart of downtown Pensacola in a new restaurant called Levant Mediterranean Grill at 440 E. Chase St.

The restaurant will replace the former Zaytouna Greek and Lebanese Restaurant, which opened in the fall of 2022 .

Zaytouna's owners broke the news of their closure in a brief social media post on their business Facebook page on April 30.

“We wanna thank all our customers. We have sold the restaurant, and a new owner will open soon. Continue supporting them in their new journey. We are officially closed. We just have to stay focus into our business in Louisiana that’s all. Thank you all,” the post stated.

While Zaytouna was a new name to Pensacola, owner Mazin Mustafa has a small restaurant empire under his belt in Louisiana and has been honing the same menu and recipes since 1992. The restaurant's mother ship, Albasha Greek and Lebanese Restaurant, has about a dozen popular locations across Louisiana that will remain unaffected by Zaytouna’s closure.

Soon after Zaytouna broke the news, In & Out fans were delighted to see that they were the ones taking over. Owner Mohamed Dali is just as excited to share traditional Middle Eastern cooking with the Pensacola community.

“We're thrilled to announce that In & out kitchen is expanding to downtown Pensacola! With new brand same food quality ( Levant Mediterranean Grill ) Thanks to the incredible support from our amazing community, we're able to bring our delicious flavors and warm hospitality to a new location,” the In & Out Kitchen Facebook post stated. “Opening another restaurant is not just a milestone for us, but a testament to the love and support we've received from each and every one of you. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being a part of our journey and for helping us grow. We can't wait to continue serving you and creating unforgettable dining experiences in downtown Pensacola! Stay tuned for updates on our grand opening celebration.”

The popular restaurant got its start as In & Out Bakery, but made the switch to In & Out Kitchen serving lunch and dinner options during the coronavirus pandemic.

While the restaurant wasn’t what they first opened as, it was always in the Dali family’s plans.

“This was my dad's passion, he wanted to open a Middle Eastern restaurant when he first came to the states," AJ Dali told the News Journal in 2020. "Unfortunately, it never quite happened. I want to do what he dreamed about."

In & Out has now built a reputation in Pensacola for offering homemade Mediterranean staples, like their charbroiled steak kabobs, deep fried falafel patties, stuffed grape leaves and thinly shaved lamb on their gyro platters. Their desserts are also eye-catchers, like their assorted flavors of baklava, including a cheesecake-stuffed rendition.

Levant will carry over many of the dishes In & Out is known for, like the famous meat kebabs, along with some favorites carried over from Zaytouna.

The name Levant refers to a specific region of the Middle East, which Dali refers to as “the heart of the Middle East.”

What really sets the food apart though is that everything is made to order.

”Everything is homemade, from the hummus to the baba ganoush,” Dali said. “Everything is fresh and made to order.”

Unlike Zaytouna, Levant will not offer beer or wine, so customers are able to bring their own inside to enjoy with their meal.

Dali said it’s Pensacola’s support of his first business that has allowed him to open the second location, and he has faith that the community will carry over their support into Levant.

Levant Mediterranean Grill is open from 10:30 a.m to 9:30 p.m on Monday through Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

More updates and information can be found on the Levant Mediterranean Grill Facebook page .
