In his youth, Dwayne had aspirations of becoming a pro NFL football star long before becoming enamored with the bright lights of the silver screen. In fact, the actor actually played for the University of Miami’s college football team the “Miami Hurricanes” as their defensive lineman and even went on to win the national championship in 1991.

During his college football years, however, Dwayne would sustain a major injury to his shoulder, which resulted in surgery, at the end of his first preseason with the college team. This shoulder injury, as well as the long time spent away from the game to recover, began a plummeting downward spiral for the actor’s athletic career.

After missing out on a chance to play for the NFL in 1995, Johnson was picked up by the Canadian Football League (CFL) and briefly played for their team the “Calgary Stampeders” before being dropped only two months later.

Though he was down, Dwayne was certainly not ready to be out, as he would eventually pick himself up out of his stupor and begin training to be a pro wrestler, a profession that Dwayne was not unfamiliar with since both his father and grandfather, Peter Maivia and Rocky Johnson, had been professional wrestlers in their day.

Using a combination of the ring names used by his father and grandfather, Dwayne made his wrestling debut in the WWF (the organization we now know as the WWE) as his character Rocky Maivia in 1996. He became part of a group known as “The Nation of Domination” and later would go on to become the group lead.

It was during his time with the “Nation” that Dwayne would change his name from Rocky Maivia to simply “The Rock” and begin to truly shape his wrestling persona into the eyebrow raising, catchphrase using wrestler that WWE fans knew and loved.

Dwayne Johnson Young and More on Dwayne Johnson Net Worth

Following the split of his first group, The Rock would go on to join another group of top wrestlers known as “The Corporation” before being kicked out of the group and becoming “The People’s Champion.”

In 2000, The Rock took a brief break from wrestling in order to work on his film debut in the action adventure flick The Mummy Returns , which would then sprout a spin-off film titled The Scorpion King (2002). It was his role as the Scorpion King that seemed to almost immediately sky-rocket him from wrestling favorite to Hollywood A-lister, starring in some of the biggest action, comedy, and family films to hit the big screen and becoming one of the highest paid actors in the biz.

Inside The Rock's Beautiful $28M California Mansion

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's House

Can you smell what "The Rock" is cooking? It's money, and professional wrestler-turned-movie star Dwayne Johnson has been making a lot of it. Now, he's pinned down a new mansion in Beverly Hills, California.

Johnson, who has been the highest-paid actor in Hollywood for years, shelled out an electrifying $27.75 million for the Mediterranean-style beauty. That's only $8 million more than Johnson makes for doing a single film.

This estate is the newest place where Johnson lives, along with several of his other homes. Come take a look at his growing real estate empire.

It Was Built By Alex Van Halen

The Rock's house

The expensive home was built for Alex Van Halen, the cofounder and drummer of Van Halen, who completed the property in 1993, according to Dirt.

The mansion features seven bedrooms, 12 bathrooms and 14,900 square feet of space in the main mansion.

There's also a detached guest house.

A Rocking Property

Dwayne Johnson's house

The mansion includes a tennis court, pool with a spa, indoor pool, massive gym (naturally), a baseball diamond, a movie theater, elevator and a recording studio, which was originally Van Halen's.

The guest house is a home unto itself, with 2,500 square feet of living space, bringing the total square footage of this estate to over 17,000 square feet.

It's Private

The Rock's new house and grounds

Most people would think twice about robbing the Rock, but the mansion has the added protection of being private and rather secluded.

It's on a cul-de-sac and behind a gated driveway, and the home's backyard looks out onto a mountain.

Trees and hedges line the property, creating a natural privacy border.

Living Like the Most Electrifying Man In Hollywood

Outdoor arched hallway

And you just know some papers would pay big bucks for photos of Johnson in his natural habitat.

The former pro wrestler is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, earning around $20 million per picture, with films that have grossed over $4 billion in North America alone.

Outside, the home has an arched hallway lined with hanging chandeliers and columns.

Settle Down for a Movie

Rock's movie theater

Put on the latest Johnson flick (or WrestleMania) in this rock star movie theater, which is lined with purple carpeting, matching curtains, and has tiered seats.

Johnson got his start in acting in 1999, where the first-ever acting role he had was playing his father on "That '70s Show." He also landed a bit part on "Star Trek: Voyager," where he fought Seven of Nine in what was basically a wrestling match .

But his first movie? "The Mummy Returns," where Universal Studios paid Johnson $5.5 million for the role as the Scorpion King, an incredible amount of money for any studio to spend on an untested actor.

Test Some New Beats in the Recording Studio

Recording studio

The Rock might not be a rock star, but we know he has musical chops. The movie star displayed his vocal range in Disney's "Moana," in which Johnson costarred.

Johnson's mother was musically inclined and frequently sang to and with him when Johnson was young. Johnson, who has three children of his own, continues the family tradition .

But his daughter doesn't always appreciate Johnson's singing. When the movie star started to sing along while the two were watching "Moana," his then 4-year-old daughter put a pillow over his mouth and told him , "You're ruining the song."

Take a Lap in the Indoor Pool

Dwayne Johnson's indoor pool

The house has an indoor pool, which is certainly a plus. You might remember Johnson as Mitch Buchannon in the 2017 "Baywatch" movie. While it was considered a stinker among critics, the film still grossed $178 million on a $69 million budget.

That year's "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" fared much better, earning in the vicinity of $20 million and "commanding up to 15 percent of the pool" from both it and its sequel.

Seeing as how those two films made $1.7 billion at the box office, we'd say the actor was well-compensated.

This House Has Some Spectacular Grounds

Olive trees

The home sits on 3.6 acres of prime Beverly Hills real estate, with canyon views and grounds with mature olive trees.

As for neighbors, Johnson is in famous company. Famous men and women who live in the area include Sylvester Stallone , Eddie Murphy, Rod Stewart, Denzel Washington, Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello .

Maybe Johnson's mom will move near him? For Christmas 2018, he gave her a "golden ticket" that's good for one house, anywhere.

The Motor Court Is Fantastic

Motor court

The home includes a large motor court with a central fountain, perfect for parking any one of Johnson's many luxury vehicles.

According to Drive Tribe, Jonson is known to own a custom Ford F-150, a matte white Ferrari Laferrari, a Rolls-Royce Wraith, a 1999 Plymouth Prowler, a 2017 Ford GT, a 2018 Ford Mustang and a $1.3 million Pagani Huayra.

From Seven Bucks to on Top of the World

Fountain at Beverly Hills house

Johnson also owns a production company called Seven Bucks Productions, which comes from a pivotal moment in his youth.

Johnson's first dream was to become a professional football player, and he played with the Miami Hurricanes while attending the University of Miami. However, the NFL never came calling, and he made his way to the Canadian Football League under a practice contract. There, he was cut after just a couple of weeks.

After coming back to live with his parents in Tampa, Florida, the future pro wrestling star looked into his wallet to see just how much he had. Seven dollars. That was it.

Johnson spent the next few weeks in a depression, but then put his mind to the next greatest thing he could think of: professional wrestling.

Tennis, Anyone?

Tennis court

The tennis court might be a good spot for the Rock to rock his Project Rock training shoes , which he makes with Under Armour. They sell for $140 .

There are many other pieces of apparel under Johnson's Project Rock line , which includes shorts, shirts, yoga pants, jackets, hats, gym bags, face masks and even wireless headphones.

In 2017, his Rock Deltas were one of the fastest-selling shoes of that year, selling out within 24 hours.

Rocking Out in the Shade

Pergola on a patio

As told through his new sitcom, "Young Rock," Johnson was raised in a professional wrestling family. Johnson grew up with the likes of Andre the Giant, the Iron Sheik, "Macho Man" Randy Savage and the Wild Samoans.

Johnson's father was Rocky Johnson, who was a top contender in the National Wrestling Alliance and World Wrestling Federation, where he and Tony Atlas became the first Black men to hold a WWF championship (they were tag team champs).

Rocky Johnson trained his son after he retired from the sport and helped get the fledgling wrestler signed to the WWF (now the WWE).

For Ballers Only

Dwayne Johnson's house in Beverly Hills

The Montecito-style Mediterranean has lush grass and a backyard that's shaded by mature trees.

Johnson also starred and produced HBO's "Ballers," which ran from 2015 to 2019. He reportedly made $650,000 - $700,000 per episode for the highly popular cable comedy.

That made him one of the highest-paid television actors in the world, ranking just behind the cast of "The Big Bang Theory," which was taking home $1 million an episode for the series' final season.

He Has a Mobile Gym

The Rock's mobile gym

This home does have a gym — and we imagine it had to be large enough to even pique Johnson's interest — but sadly, there are no pictures.

But check this out. When he's on the road, Johnson has a mobile gym set up by a small army of helpers.

The thing weighs 40,000 pounds and he calls it the " travelling iron carnival ."

Gather Outside

Relaxing outdoor patio

This outside patio is a small, intimate place for gatherings of friends and family. Johnson has three daughters — Simone (now approaching 20), Jasmine (6), and Tiana (3). Simone has been training with WWE and signed with the company in 2020.

She is the daughter of Johnson and his first wife, Dany Garcia. The two married in 1997 and amicably divorced in 2008 (she still helps manage his business ventures).

Johnson married his current wife and mother to his young daughters, Lauren Hashian, in 2019.

The HOA Fees Cost More Than a Mortgage Payment

View of Franklin Canyon mountains

The mansion is located near Franklin Canyon, with one large mountain hill encompassing the backyard view.

Homes in the Beverly Hills area list for a median of $3.8 million and sell for a median of $3.1 million, and homes have a median price-per-square foot of $1,100 according to realtor.com .

Johnson's new home is not only nine times the median sales price, the property taxes run $117,400 per year, and HOA fees cost $3,300 per month. Yes, the HOA fees alone cost more than many monthly mortgage payments.

It Used to Belong to Paul Reiser

Dwayne Johnson's house in California

The mansion formerly belonged to Paul Reiser, an actor and comedian known for his role as Michael Taylor in "My Two Dads," Paul Buchman in "Mad About You" and Doug Getty in Amazon's "Red Oaks."

Reiser asked $30 million for his luxurious pad, but Johnson talked him down by $2.25 million, presumably after calling him one of his patented wrestling put-downs.

The Rock's Net Worth

Dwayne Johnson

But this isn't the only house that the Rock has.

The 10-time WWE world champion found millions wrestling, but it's acting that brought him the big bucks.

He's worth about $400 million, and he has more than just that one home.

Johnson's Horse Farm

Dwayne Johnson's home in Georgia

If three acres in Beverly Hills isn't a large enough space for the 6-foot-2, 260-pound action star to spread out in, he can always head to his horse farm in Powder Springs, Georgia.

Johnson purchased this 46-acre estate for $9.5 million in 2019. He put it up for sale for $7.5 million in 2021, but then seems to have delisted it not long thereafter.

Riding With the Rock

Aerial view of The Rock's Georgia estate

It seems that Johnson also loves horses. He hasn't been too candid about this, but he did share a photo of him riding Russell Crowe's horse from "Gladiator" while filming in London, England.

This estate is close to the historic Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta and features a 12-stall barn, a 14,000-square-foot historic farmhouse, two apartments, a lake and plenty of places to ride.

He Ripped the Gate Off His Rental Property

Rock's broken gate

In September 2020, Johnson posted a photo of a destroyed front gate. Why? He had to be at work and the gate wouldn't open due to a power outage, so he ripped it off.

"I tried to override the hydraulic system to open the gates, which usually works when the power goes out — but this time it wouldn’t. Made some calls to see how fast I can get the gate tech on-site, but I didn’t have 45 min to wait," he wrote on Instagram .

"By this time, I know I have hundreds of production crew members waiting for me to come to work so we can start our day. So I did what I had to do. I pushed, pulled and ripped the gate completely off myself. Tore it out of the brick wall, severed the steel hydraulics and threw it on the grass.

My security team was able to meet the gate technician and welders about an hour later — and they were apparently, 'in disbelief and equally scared.'"

But this isn't the gate to his home in Georgia. According to realtor.com , this is the gate from a home that he's renting located 20 miles east of his horse farm. He was (or maybe still is) renting it for somewhere around $25,000 per month.

Having Some Tequila

The Rock's tequila

Johnson does post some photos of his homes in Instagram, although it's difficult to tell where they might be.

This photo shows him almost half of a bottle deep into a bottle of Teremana tequila , Johnson's own tequila brand, which operates under his Siete Bucks Spirits label. It goes for around $30 per bottle.

Fishing at the Lake

The Rock fishing

Johnson's farm has a lake that can be used for fishing. In this Instagram post , Johnson said he was fishing with  "a top water plug frog with a new 6' light action with 4lb test."

We're pretty sure that's for bass fishing. Johnson took his two young daughters out to go bass fishing for the first time in May 2021.

Do You Smell What the Rock Is Gifting?

Christmas at Dwayne Johnson's house

This photo from Christmas 2019 shows one of his daughters standing before a tree stuffed with gifts.

Dwayne Johnson likes to play " Dwanta Claus " for Christmas. He's probably more generous than Santa Claus, too.

The Rock at Christmas

Dwayne The Rock Johnson as a baby

And here's the Rock when he was 7 months old. The picture was taken in Hayward, California, where the Rock was born.

"5 months later I hit puberty. It was a good Christmas, my friends," he wrote .

Can You Smell What the Rock Is Cooking?

The Rock in his kitchen

Johnson absolutely towers over the kitchen island (and his dog, Hobbs) and makes the huge marble-topped counter look miniscule.

This kitchen — and to be honest, we're not 100 percent sure which one he's in — features hardwood flooring, pale green cabinetry and a stainless steel range to cook whatever the Rock feels like cooking.

A Children's Room

Dwayne Johnson with daughter

One of Rock's properties has this children's room, which seems to belong to Tiana Gia, seen here getting her hair combed by the former WWE champion.

"Now despite my two year old looking completely TERRIFIED for her life that daddy is solely responsible for getting all the painful tangles out of her hair.... I may be bald but I know a thing or two about hair. Mainly because I wish I had it," he wrote on Instagram .

Having a Cheat Meal

The Rock cheat meal

Johnson might also have a home in Hawaii, which is where he spent a lot of his youth.

The burgers shown here, part of Johnson's infamous decadent "cheat meal" days, are from Teddy's Bigger Burgers , a chain mainly located in Hawaii.

"Two big daddy’s (my name for them;) aka cheeseburgers with avocado, bacon, onions, lettuce, tomato and double fries from one of my favorite local burger joints on the island," he wrote on Instagram .

When he's not having his cheat meal, Johnson follows a strict diet, which includes an enormous amount of cod — he eats an estimated  821 pounds of cod every year.

Swimming With His Kids

Dwayne Johnson in a pool

During lockdown, Johnson did get to spend some quality time with the kids.

"My pool days = Tia just wanting 'daddy hold me' while I walk around inside the pool with her and Jazzy (resurfacing to catch her breath) swims up and bites my legs because 'the shark has to kill the big monster,' Johnson wrote on Instagram in 2020.

A Rocking Thanksgiving

Dwayne Johnson Thanksgiving

If for whatever reason you're wondering what a Rock family Thanksgiving looks like, it's this.

Either in his rental or on his horse farm, this long, custom table made out of one slice of wood is long enough for at least six of the Rock's family and the Rock's family's friends.

It also appears that he had a ham all to himself. Or maybe this was just another one of his cheat meals.

Dwayne Johnson established himself as one of the most electrifying wrestlers in the WWE after winning several championships. But after moving on from his wrestling career, Johnson successfully made the jump to Hollywood starring in several films including Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Black Adam, Moana, San Andreas, Baywatch, and many others. He is a three time Kids' Choice Awards winner and a People's Choice Awards winner. With Johnson successfully making a name for himself in the WWE and in Hollywood, have you wondered how the wrestler turned actor lives? Well, wonder no more. This article features Dwayne Johnson's $27.8 million mansion in Beverly Park, Los Angeles, California.

During the same year Johnson starred in Red Notice alongside Hollywood sensations Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, the former WWE star rewarded himself by buying a Beverly Park mansion that was once owned by fellow actor Paul Reiser and musician Alex Van Halen. Originally sold for as much as $30 million, Johnson found a way to acquire the property for only $27.8 million.

Here are some photos of Dwayne Johnson's $27.8 million mansion in Beverly Park, Los Angeles, California.

Originally built in 1993, Johnson's nearly $28 million mansion encompasses 17,630 square feet of living space. It includes six bedrooms and 12 bathrooms. Aside from the main home, the property also includes a 2,500 square foot guest house. Furthermore, the main mansion features a music studio, an elevator, a fitness gym, an indoor swimming pool, a movie theater, a spacious living room, and many others.

Johnson and his family should also have no problems enjoying the outdoors. The property's backyard includes an outdoor swimming pool, a patio, a tennis court, and plenty of green spaces filled with trees, plants, and grass. With the home's amenities, the Johnson family shouldn't feel cramped inside the home.

Red One trailer shows Chris Evans, Dwayne Johnson’s reluctant team-up

During his time in the WWE, Johnson was already considered as one of the top talents. As a result, he was already raking in a respectable salary. However, now that he has starred in several successful films, it isn't a surprise that he can ultimately afford to live a lavish lifestyle. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Johnson has a net worth of around $800 million .

Aside from the $27.8 million Beverly Park mansion, Johnson also previously owned other properties including 15,000 square foot home in Georgia where he took a $2 million loss. Back then, he also owned a Fort Lauderdale estate, which he sold for $4.5 million.

Nevertheless, this is all the information that we have on Dwayne Johnson's $27.8 million mansion in Beverly Park, Los Angeles, California.

If you thought Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had it all as Hollywood’s highest-paid actor, well, he didn’t — until now. The Fast & Furious star dropped a small chunk of change on a $27.8 million home in an exclusive gated community of Beverly Hills called Beverly Park. He  won’t ever have to leave his home because every amenity is right there in his backyard.

Kim Kardashian, Leonardo DiCaprio, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, George Clooney

The mansion is honestly the size of a hotel sitting on 3.6 acres, which is considerable for a Los Angeles home. If they don’t enjoy the main home, Johnson and his wife, Lauren Hashian, and their two daughters, Jasmine, 5, and Tiana Gia, 3, can opt for the 2,500 square-foot guest house. Or is that reserved for his oldest daughter, Simone Alexandra, 19, from his first marriage to Dany Garcia? Either way, the family has 18,000 square feet of living space to spread out.

Johnson will never hear, “I’m bored” out of his kids in their new home because they have so many activities to choose from in this private estate. They can sing in the music studio, watch a movie on the big screen in their private theater or run the bases on their baseball diamond.

Like most chic expensive homes in Beverly Hills, there’s also a Hollywood history to the property. Johnson is buying the house from former Mad About You star Paul Reiser, who had purchased it from rock star Alex Van Halen. It was Van Halen, who custom-built the dream home fit for a king. If it’s not fit for a king, then maybe it’s fit for a president because Johnson is mulling a 2024 presidential run.

Don’t miss the incredible highlights from Johnson’s new estate — wait until you see the indoor and outdoor pools — and be sure to check out even more photos on Dirt .

House Exterior

dwayne johnson house tour

The Mediterranean-style house is more than just a place to live — it’s a compound with everything Johnson’s family needs and then some.

Long Driveway

dwayne johnson house tour

If privacy was what the action star was looking for, he certainly got it with a stunning long-winding driveway accented with olive trees.

Screening Room

dwayne johnson house tour

This will definitely be the heart of the home with a movie-star dad. Do the kids want to watch Jumanji or are they more into Moana ?

Indoor Pool

dwayne johnson house tour

Believe it or not, California does get cold in the winter, so why not have an indoor pool for those 60-degree days? (Yes, that’s California cold.)

Outdoor Patio

dwayne johnson house tour

Outdoor living is the best part of Los Angeles and we expect to see Johnson barbecuing up some burgers and hot dogs for his family on Sunday afternoons.

Tennis Court

dwayne johnson house tour

Does The Rock play tennis? We need to find the answer to this question because he could make some good political deals out on the court if he runs for president.

Lush Gardens

dwayne johnson house tour

The best part of the property is the lush gardens that remind us of Tusany, Italy. We would never leave the estate if our backyard looked like this.

Dwayne Johnson Surprises Fans on a Stars' Homes Tour for Thanksgiving: 'Have You Seen My House Yet?'

“Ok cool, keep it that way,” Dwayne “the Rock“ Johnson told surprised fans when they said they hadn’t yet seen his home on a tour Thursday

Dwayne Johnson made the best of an encounter with surprised fans on Thursday and made sure to wish them a "Happy Thanksgiving " as well.

The San Andreas star, 49, was in his car on Thanksgiving Day, and filmed a moment when he pulled up next to a StarLine Tour van carrying fans in Los Angeles.

"Have you seen my house yet?" he asked the group of stunned onlookers, some of whom were also holding up their smartphones.

"Ok cool, keep it that way," the movie star joked after they answered, "No."

"All right, you guys take care. Have a happy Thanksgiving!" Johnson said as he drove away.

"A lil' Thanksgiving Star Tour Bus surprise…" he captioned the amusing clip. "Happy Thanksgiving you guys, enjoy my hood," he later added.

On Wednesday, the Red Notice actor posted another sweet snippet to his social media, in which he surprised Navy vet Oscar Rodriguez with his own "personal custom truck" after hearing Rodriguez's inspiring story.

"Today was a good day," Johnson wrote in the caption of the Instagram video. "Merry Christmas @coach_orod and enjoy your new truck. I invited fans to a special theater screening of RED NOTICE and I wanted to do something cool for all of them."

"Free concessions, @projectrock , @teremana , @zoaenergy , @saltandstraw ice cream.

Free everything and a great time at the movies!" Johnson wrote, adding, "I also wanted to do something BIG… something MASSIVE…something unforgettable for one fan."

Johnson's "original idea was to give away the Porsche Taycan, that I drive in the movie, Red Notice . So we reached out to Porsche, but they said no. But I still said, yes 😉 I'll do one better. I'll give away my personal custom truck as the gift. My baby 😊."

"I gathered as much information as I could about everyone in the audience and ultimately, Oscar's story moved me," the Jungle Cruise star shared. "Takes care of his 75 year old mom. Personal trainer. Leader at his church. Provides support and meals for women victimized by domestic violence. Proud & humble Navy veteran. Kind human being. Oscar said it right, just before he drove away ~ it's just love. That's all it is, brother. Just love."

Johnson added, "Go enjoy your new truck dude and Merry Christmas to you and your family!!!👊🏾dj."

In the video, Johnson is seen giving Rodriguez a card explaining that the truck was now his. Overcome with emotion, Rodriguez dropped to the floor and began to cry, asking, "What the heck is happening?" before giving the actor a big hug.

The moment came after Johnson surprised Rodriguez at a movie theater screening of his new Netflix film Red Notice .

"Your story really moved me because I hear that you're a personal trainer, you're always keeping it positive and motivational and optimistic," Johnson told Rodriguez in front of moviegoers.

Rodriguez said, "I'm just speechless. I'm so glad to meet you, I feel so encouraged right now, so uplifted. I'm encouraged by your motivation. I follow you on Instagram, I listen to your words. You inspire me. And yeah, let's do it. Let's change the world, one person, at a time."

After seeing Rodriguez drive off with his new truck, Johnson reflected on the moment, saying, "[It was] just an honor for me to give a little bit of joy to someone who deserves a lot more than just my truck," before laughing and saying, "And now I can figure out how I'm getting home. Cause I don't have my ride."

How Dwayne Johnson rocked the film industry

Dwayne Johnson

It was 110 degrees in the Sahara Desert, and Dwayne Johnson was freezing.

He was in Morocco in 2001 shooting his first film role, as the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns , and he was sick as a dog. He had only one line (a shout, “ Haku machente !”), but two big scenes. Between takes, he slumped in a chair with blankets over his head. “I get a call from my agent, and he says, ‘Hey, they’re watching the dailies of what they’re shooting, and they want to make a movie just off your character.’ And I said, ‘Great,’ as I leaned over to vomit more.”

It’s a story that reflects how hard Johnson works. Hollywood teems with hardworking actors, of course, but Johnson, 42, goes further than most. He’s not done when the cameras stop rolling. He takes each movie’s promotion into his own hands, pushing it to his 56 million fans across social media, a platform that film insiders say is more valuable to a Dwayne Johnson flick than any ad campaign.

You may know Johnson as “The Rock,” but then again, you might not. For years he was an actor with an asterisk: former wrestler. But these days the asterisk is gone. Johnson has become bona fide box-office gold without abandoning the venue that made him famous. Now he’s turning his attention to the production company he created with his manager, who is also his ex-wife. Earning respect beyond acting, as a businessman, will be a serious challenge, but The Rock likes his odds.

Johnson went from being so poor as a kid that he and his mother were evicted from their home, to Division I college football, to World Wrestling Entertainment, to Hollywood, to being the highest-grossing actor of 2013. How he did it is a case study in determination—and in getting some great advice.

“Here’s why one day I’ll have to see a therapist,” Johnson tells Fortune , sitting on a windowsill in the sparkling new Fort Lauderdale offices of his ex-wife, Dany Garcia. Then he recounts the story of getting evicted in Hawaii. It’s one he has told many times, and tells well.

The only child of a Canadian father and a Samoan mother, Johnson grew up like an Army brat, living everywhere from California to New Zealand to Texas, because his father, Rocky Johnson, was a professional wrestler and traveled the circuit. At age 15, Dwayne and his mother were living in a small studio in Honolulu when they came home to an eviction notice and a lock on the door. Their rent, at $180 a week, was too much for his mother, who cleaned hotel rooms. “It broke my heart,” he says. The pair had no choice but to move to Nashville, where his dad was wrestling at the time. “I remember saying to myself, ‘I will do anything and everything I possibly can to make sure we never get evicted again.’ But what does that mean—what does it mean to be successful? Well, the successful men I admired all built their bodies.”

Dwayne Johnson

Those men were Sylvester Stallone, Clint Eastwood, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Johnson began boxing and lifting weights after school. The training gave him focus, which he needed at the time. Back in Hawaii he had been arrested for crimes including theft, check fraud, vandalism, and assault. But although he was poor, he had connections there: One of his uncles was a former chief of police in Honolulu. And many of his relatives were minor local celebrities: His grandfather Peter Maivia was a professional wrestler, as were two uncles, nicknamed the “Wild Samoans,” and five cousins. His grandmother was a wrestling promoter. “They were all well-known in Hawaii, so I never went to juvie,” he says. “It was like Boardwalk Empire out there.”

Because of his father’s job, Johnson ended up at Freedom High School in Bethlehem, Pa., for his junior year. He quickly emerged as a star defensive tackle and got recruited to the University of Miami. There he met his future wife, Garcia—she rowed crew, and they locked eyes in the weight room—and won a national championship in 1991. He figured he was on a straight path to the NFL until a back injury sidelined him in his senior year. (His replacement was future Hall of Famer Warren Sapp.) His dream dashed, he took a consolation prize, joining the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. That didn’t work out either; he was cut after two months. Broke, jobless, and embarrassed, he flew from Canada to Miami and called his father to drive from Tampa to get him. On the ride home, he emptied his pockets and found just seven dollars (hence his company’s name: 7 Bucks Productions).

Johnson had never planned on going into the family business, and his father initially forbade it. But once he moved back in with his parents, and after weeks of depression, it seemed the obvious move. Rocky told Dwayne he had nothing to offer the sport; Dwayne, hurt, felt differently. “Looking back,” he says, “I understand that he was thinking, ‘Man, I wrestled for 40 years, and this is what I have to show for it: a tiny apartment in Tampa. I don’t want this for you.’”

It turned out that Johnson had a lot to offer the sport. He began wrestling in small-time matches as Flex Kavana, made it to the WWE in 1996 and took the name Rocky Maivia, and went on, as The Rock, to become the biggest superstar televised wrestling has ever seen. Fans of the “sport”—which is part verbal performance, part dance, and all theater—loved his charisma and family backstory.

In wrestling, at last, Johnson found financial stability. (As a kid, he had dreamed of owning a Rolex, and even wore a fake one to remember his goal; in his second year in the WWE, he finally bought one, for $35,000. It got smashed in the ring a week later, and he realized he didn’t care and never replaced it.) Then, in 2000, he was invited to host Saturday Night Live . “When the SNL ask came,” Dany Garcia recalls, “he was like, ‘Bring it on! I get to wear a dress and do comedy? Sure, easy.’” The show went well, and Americans who didn’t care a whit about pro wrestling took notice of him. Hollywood came calling.

Johnson kept wrestling, even through a series of leading roles in movies from The Scorpion King (for which he earned $5.5 million, believed to be the highest price tag then for a first-time star) to the action comedy The Rundown in 2003 to the grittier crime movie Walking Tall in 2004. Debating whether to leave the WWE and abandon (as they saw it) the fans who had made him was perhaps his first true internal struggle. But that’s what he did in 2004, to give acting his full attention.

You could argue that Johnson fully emerged as an actor with Be Cool in 2005, in which he played a gay bodyguard with an Afro. It was the first time he acted opposite A-list stars (Uma Thurman and John Travolta) and, more significantly, it helped establish that his groove was in action comedy.

For the 2006 football film Gridiron Gang he used the stage name Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. By 2008, for the Steve Carell movie Get Smart , he was credited simply as Dwayne Johnson. That simple move had a real struggle behind it—Johnson didn’t think he needed to drop “The Rock,” but he felt pulled into a certain mold by his agents at Creative Artists Agency.

Johnson was getting advice that didn’t feel right to him. “The management I had around me was adamant about shedding the moniker of ‘The Rock,’” he says, “and I bought into it. In their defense, it made sense, because I was attempting to do something that nobody had done.” In 2011 he switched from CAA to WME and its famous wheeler-dealer chief, Ari Emanuel. Right away Johnson felt Emanuel was on the same page. (The agent even beats him out of bed. Johnson, who gets up every day at 4 a.m. to hit the gym, complains that Emanuel is up 15 minutes earlier.) “If I want to be called ‘The Rock,’ I’ll be called ‘The Rock.’ If I want to go back to wrestling, I’ll go back to wrestling,” he says. “It’s all the same guy. Ari gets it.”

He did, in fact, go back to wrestling. In 2011 he signed on to fight in a number of big WWE events for three years. After he pulled off the feat of transitioning out of sports, getting back in the ring was a risk. (You wouldn’t expect, say, Jimmy Fallon to go back to SNL for a season.) Johnson didn’t need the money, but he wanted to show that he could boost the WWE’s business. “We set pay-per-view buy-rate records and attendance records each time,” he says proudly. “So: boom!”

It was also a way to win back fans who had jeered when he first retired. “I think fans realized, ‘Wow, you’re back, and you committed for three years, and you don’t have to be here.’ I had the balls to be authentic.” That authenticity comes through in his social media posts, where he gives a personal view into his life. It’s why fans adore him. (In person he comes across as instantly likable, unassuming, and exuberantly profane.)

In 2013 his movies made some $1.3 billion worldwide—more than any other actor’s movies that year, period. (It helped that he was in four.) Johnson has a tendency to pick up existing franchises and make them his. The second G.I. Joe film took in $376 million worldwide; the first, without Johnson, made $74 million less. Journey 2 grossed almost $100 million more than its predecessor. In the Fast and Furious franchise, Fast Five , which introduced his character, Hobbs, earned nearly twice what the previous movie made.

It’s as though he doubles as a promotional tool. You can imagine his name as a line on a studio’s marketing budget: billboard in Times Square, TV advertising, Dwayne’s Twitter account. “I’ve been in meetings where certain actors’ names come up and there’s a hesitation to cast them, because they don’t ‘work for the movie,’” says the producer Toby Emmerich. “They’ll show up at the press junket, but they don’t put in the effort after it films. Given the choice of two actors equally right for the part, the studio places the value on someone who will go out and tease the film.” Johnson does a lot more than tease. He shares videoclips on his Facebook page, where he has 42 million followers. He posts on-set selfies to Instagram, where they receive hundreds of comments, most of them not in English.

ROC.11.17.14.The Rock.02

Johnson’s global fame can even rescue a film that disappoints at the U.S. box office. When director Brett Ratner was preparing to make a Hercules movie, Johnson met with him to discuss the part. “He was just coming off Pain and Gain , which I thought he was brilliant in, and he was huge, like the biggest I’ve ever seen him,” says Ratner. “The muscles on his shoulders were up to his ears. And at the end of the meeting he says to me, ‘I’m going to work really hard to get into shape for this.’ I didn’t know what to say.” The film had only a decent U.S. opening of $29.8 million. (Keith Simanton, managing editor of IMDb, says Johnson’s performance wasn’t the problem: “That poor guy probably acts against greenscreen more than any other person in the world.”) Abroad it was a different story. “The great saving grace is China,” says Ratner. “We could be disappointed in the final number, but China tips it over the top. He has such a huge fan base there.” Thus far Hercules has made roughly 70% of its total gross overseas.

Johnson wasn’t done when Hercules premiered in the U.S. in July. He attended the premieres in Moscow, Tokyo, Toronto, Beijing, and Mexico City. He rode into the Berlin premiere on a horse. “I always used to say the most committed actor I ever worked with was Jackie Chan,” says Ratner. “But Dwayne—this guy has worked out and eaten twice before he gets to the set. When I’m still dreaming, he’s up transforming his body.”

ROC-11.17v2

Indeed, Johnson’s body is the stuff of CGI fantasy. At 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, with biceps the size of your skull, he looks even bigger than when he wrestled. “Training is my anchor,” he says. “Being on a regimented schedule, setting a goal, failing at a goal. It’s the philosophies of being an athlete that carry me today.” He’s so shredded and veiny in photos from the gym that critics in online forums accuse him of using steroids. Johnson has said he hasn’t touched them since he was 18, when he tried them before college. “Sure, you get a lot of people out there who will suspect, and say shit,” he says. “They want to negate the hard work you put in.” Judging by his diet, it’s hard to think he cuts corners. He chugs protein shakes (he calls them “liquid crack”) and eats five or six meals a day, each protein, fat, and carbohydrate tallied.

The best advice that The Rock ever got was something the director of Gridiron Gang , Phil Joanou, said to him on set in 2005: Protect the thing that allows you to do what you do. Johnson rephrases it: “Around every corner always protect the engine that powers you.”

Johnson’s engine is his unusual support team. He and Garcia, who have a 13-year-old daughter, divorced in 2007 and then in 2012 co-founded 7 Bucks Productions. Johnson now lives with his girlfriend of seven years, Lauren Hashian. Garcia remarried this year, to Dave Rienzi, who is now Johnson’s strength and conditioning coach. It’s enough to raise The Rock’s eyebrow, he acknowledges. “Life is amazing. Life is fucking messy. Life is what you make of it,” he says. “I’m happy to say we’re all together working nicely, but it took a lot of work. With Dany, it was going through the sludge of divorce and then having the clarity to say, ‘We’re still friends, we respect each other, let’s do business. And let’s do big business.’”

The big business moving forward is in producing television. Johnson and Garcia, through 7 Bucks Productions, have eight projects in the works, many of which won’t star Johnson. One is an anti-bullying show with mixed-martial-arts champion Ronda Rousey (the working title is Comeback Kids ). Another is a comedic show with a host (not Johnson) who discusses how to survive social events like a bachelor party. Yet another show, a partnership with 44 Blue, which produces the MSNBC program Lockup , will send Johnson to a Miami detention center to mentor at-risk youths.

“The thought was always, ‘How can we put a corporate structure around this beast called Dwayne Johnson?’” says Garcia. “What can we set up so that this man, when he no longer wants to be in front of the camera, can have a lot to offer?” In pitch meetings Garcia stresses her partner’s global appeal. She estimates that his social media efforts add $15 million to $20 million in marketing value to a film or TV project.

The first producing credit for 7 Bucks was on TNT’s The Hero , Johnson’s initial foray into reality TV, in which he put people through physical and mental challenges. TNT ended it after one season but wanted to keep working with him. Garcia had an idea to do something similar to Extreme Home Makeover , with struggling families. The result is Wake Up Call , which premieres this fall. It’s what you might call a reality advice show. Each episode begins with Johnson running a surprise intervention, then guiding the subject—a dad spending his family’s money on trying to become a rapper, a football coach whose obesity has gotten out of control—to self-betterment. “No competition, no cash prize, America doesn’t vote on anything,” says Johnson. “It’s just me and the audience.”

MORE: The Rock’s best advice for success

Meanwhile, he has two new movies coming in 2015: another Fast and Furious flick and the earthquake drama San Andreas , which paid him $13 million. Further down the road he will play the antihero Black Adam in the film adaptation of the cult comic book Shazam —a role smack in the center of his sweet spot—and will star in a movie version of the campy show Baywatch .

Perhaps most notably, he will star in the HBO series Ballers , which he and Garcia are executive-producing with Mark Wahlberg. He plays a former football player trying to become a superagent. Unlike Hercules , which Johnson admits was “all about the body,” Ballers is about the performance. “You won’t see him with his shirt off in every scene, if at all,” says his WME agent, Brad Slater. “He’ll be in expensive suits.”

That really will take some acting—Johnson isn’t into flash. He owns two black Ford trucks and spends his free time fishing in the Everglades. Ten years after buying a home in Hollywood, he felt “done with L.A.,” sold the house, and moved to Florida full-time. (He had been living bi-coastally.) “Fortunately, business has grown so much, we’re able to have business down here,” he says.

The globalization of film is happening at the perfect time for Dwayne Johnson. In markets like China and Russia there are far fewer screens than in the States, but new ones are opening at a rapid pace. “Imagine when they have as many screens there as we have,” says Ratner, giddily. “There will be a time when a movie doesn’t even perform in the U.S. and can do $1 billion in the box office.” It will probably be a Brett Ratner–directed action comedy starring a certain large Samoan.

Fast X ’s Candy-ass Mid-Credits Scene, Explained

dwayne johnson house tour

Warning: This post spoils many plot details of Fast X.

In their decadent, late-period incarnation, the Fast & Furious movies often split the difference between superhero world-building and the tongue-in-cheek goofiness of a lighter James Bond movie. So it’s appropriate that Fast X ’s mid-credits sequence — not post-credits, to be pedantic about it — combines those elements as well. But with the context of a very public beef between two very large men and the flailing fortunes of other film franchises, there’s more going on here than in your average post-film teaser.

The scene opens with a gaggle of Special Forces types clearing a dank hallway draped in ragged plastic sheeting — reminiscent of the abandoned police station where Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) tracked the movie’s big bad Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa) earlier in the film. A figure who appears to be an elite gunman in tactical sunglasses and a black balaclava makes his way past rows of seats covered in tarps in a crumbling movie palace.

The vibe is, in short, haunted as hell. As the soldier approaches the stage, draped in more plastic and blank video monitors, we find the source of the spooky musical cue that’s been playing throughout the sequence: Roy Rogers and Dale Evans singing “ Happy Trails ” on one of those old, bricklike portable TVs. A cell phone placed in front of it rings. The big guy picks up.

“Howdy, partner,” a voice says. “Do you like surprises?”

It’s Reyes, re-relitigating the ending of Fast Five. One thing that latter-day Fast & Furious movies love to do is cut back to a scene they already showed at a slightly wider angle, pulling back to reveal a new guy standing next to the guy we already knew was there. This tendency reaches its apotheosis in Fast X ’s mid-credits sequence , recycling footage from Fast Five , which we already saw again in the opening scene of Fast X. “You’ve done some dastardly dirty deeds. You’ve taken the most important thing in my life from me,” Reyes says right before we see his character’s dad die again — just in case we didn’t make the connection the first time.

“And now I’m gonna make you suffer,” Reyes adds, because when you’re trying to stretch your big finale into three two-hour movies, you don’t want to kill anyone off right away. “The devil is coming for you.” A spotlight, presumably coming from the projection booth, flashes on, bathing the figure in light. In case the sheer size of the character’s forearms didn’t give it away, he dramatically takes off his helmet and pulls down his face covering. The big-applause moment has arrived: It’s Dwayne Johnson! “I ain’t hard to find, you sum’bitch,” he growls and crushes the phone in one of his massive hand.

Last we left Johnson’s character, super-soldier and intelligence operative Agent Lucas Hobbs, he had given up on the will-they-won’t-they of alternately helping and hindering Dom’s crew in Fast & Furious five through eight. Instead, he’d taken his skills in manly bickering to London, where the CIA (Universal, whatever) paired him up with Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) — another of the series’ erstwhile frenemies — for a high-stakes mission with shades of tough-guy family values in spinoff Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019).

That film had only the loosest of ties to the Toretto-family saga for reasons that go beyond Hollywood’s passion for milking IP. While filming The Fate of the Furious in 2016 , Johnson took to Instagram to air his grievances with an unnamed “family” member, writing in a (since-deleted but thoroughly documented ) caption: “Some [male co-stars] conduct themselves as stand up men and true professionals, while others don’t. The ones that don’t are too chicken shit to do anything about it anyway. Candy asses.” He hashtagged the post “zero tolerance for candy asses,” and a feud was born.

Everyone suspected that Vin Diesel was the “candy ass” in question, though Johnson walked back his statements two days later, writing , “family is gonna have differences of opinion … I was raised on healthy conflict and welcome it. And like any family, we get better from it.” Still, #CandyAss dominated the movie’s press tour the following spring, and rumors from the set claimed that Diesel and Johnson had butted heads so often that they ended up shooting their scenes separately. Tellingly, Diesel was the only co-star Johnson didn’t tag in his Instagram post about the end of filming.

Diesel implicated himself in multiple interviews, including one in which he said, “It’s not always easy being an alpha. And it’s two alphas.” In a cast full of cutups, tough gals, tech whizzes, and the supreme professionalism of one Mr. Kurt Russell, who else could the other alpha be? Scott Eastwood? (No offense to Scott Eastwood.) Whether it was kayfabe — Johnson is one of the most successful pro wrestlers of all time — or real animosity between two men who are not used to sharing space with anyone who’s as big, bald, and charismatic as they are, the damage was done. Johnson sat out F9 and (most of) Fast X and seemed to have gotten his own spinoff in the proverbial divorce. In 2021, Johnson told CNN that his and Diesel’s differences were irreconcilable and that he had told Diesel “directly — and privately — that I would not be returning to the franchise.”

What changed? As we’ve mentioned, Johnson was a pro wrestler for many years and could have been playing the heel this whole time in order to whip up audience interest in an emotional onscreen reunion with Diesel. There’s that, then there’s Black Adam. Johnson’s stab at solo superhero stardom was critically reviled and grossed less than $400 million worldwide — a weak performance given the star power and name recognition involved. That’s $360 million less than Hobbs & Shaw — which, to be fair, came out before the COVID-19 pandemic and did excellent numbers overseas. (Johnson went on the offensive after Variety called Black Adam a box-office “bust,” tweeting that it would probably turn a modest profit once all the secondary-revenue services had been accounted for, thanks.)

Nevertheless, a Hobbs & Shaw sequel isn’t coming anytime soon . Which is not to say that Johnson doesn’t have anything going on at the moment: He’s filming sequels to 2021’s Jungle Cruise and 2015’s San Andreas . And Shane Black’s long-awaited Doc Savage movie (starring Johnson in the title role) is supposedly still happening. But in terms of big-name series with big paydays, returning to F&F is Johnson’s best bet. Diesel has already expressed a willingness to bury the candy-ass hatchet, writing on Instagram in November , “Hobbs can’t be played by no other. I hope that you rise to the occasion and fulfill your destiny.”

So what will Dwayne Johnson’s (and Luke Hobbs’s) return to the Fast & Furious fold look like? With no Hobbs & Shaw sequel in the works (for now) and Dom’s greatest enemy now Hobbs’s greatest enemy as well, the most probable outcome is that either Dom will get wind of Hobbs’s problems with F&F nepo-Joker Dante or Hobbs will come to him directly for help in F&F 11 or 12 . The two will then have to overcome their differences and band together to save the world by driving cars really fast — rebuilding the stars’ real-life relationship as well as their characters’ fictional one.

It’s the kind of corny redemption arc that Diesel — who’s a producer on the F&F series and its biggest cheerleader as well as its star — loves. In his pleas for Johnson to squash their beef and return to the F&F fold, he often said that his kids call Johnson “Uncle Dwayne,” which is about as close as you can get to an emotional A-bomb in Diesel’s sentimental universe. The fact that doing it for the money, doing it for the fans, and doing it for the family are all the same thing in this instance can’t hurt either.
