The Granary Foodstore

The Granary Foodstore is just off the main street, down a side lane next to the Black Barrel Gastro Pub. They serve great coffee and have a fantastic range of home-cooked cakes and meals.

Coppingers Midleton

The main place that everyone in Midleton loves to frequent is Coppingers, more lovingly referred to as JJ’s. Coppingers regularly have live music events where you shouldn’t be surprised if the musicians end up standing at the Bar. 

They have one of the best cocktail menus in East Cork, and the premises oozes charm. Located at the end of the main street in Midleton towards the Jameson distillery, the stone-brick building is hard to miss.

Wallis’ Bar Midleton

Wallis’ Bar is where you will find many of the craic with their late-night Bar on the weekends. Immerse yourself in the heart of Midleton at Wallis’ Bar on Main Street, a must-visit destination. Lions, luxury and living history - explore the epic Fota Island, off Cork

An island like no other, east cork's fota island is filled with history, excitement and a chance for true relaxation and fun..

East Cork’s Fota Island boasts a trio of world-class attractions — a Regency mansion, wildlife park and five-star resort, writes Domhnall O’Donoghue.

Thanks to my father’s thick Munster drawl, when my younger self first visited East Cork’s Fota Island, I thought it was a place where tourists used their cameras. Of course, I wasn’t right — but I also wasn’t wrong, given how photogenic the area’s main attractions are, as I rediscovered this winter.

Standing outside Fota House — the Regency mansion, set amongst 115 acres of gardens — I furiously click my phone, hoping to capture its splendor, enhanced by the evening’s golden sunset. Despite my best efforts, the results don’t do justice to this majestic property, which started as a humble, two-story hunting lodge.

Owned by descendants of Philip de Barry — a Cambro-Norman warrior who’d been granted ownership of Fota Island following his participation in the 12th-century invasion of Ireland — it initially served as a base for fishing, shooting and exploring the surrounding Cork Harbour .  

That all changed in the early 19th century when Fota House was reimagined by renowned architects Sir Richard Morrison and his son, William, and became the Smith-Barry’s permanent home.

The final owner was Dorothy Bell — after her death in 1975, the estate was first purchased by University College Cork, drawn to its farmland. More recently, the property and surrounding gardens were acquired by the Irish Heritage Trust. Across 70 rooms, they performed a stunning restoration, providing visitors — and fans of shows like Downton Abbey — with a snapshot of how Ireland’s wealthiest families once lived.

‘It has an extraordinary history,’ says Catherine Murphy, the house’s sales and marketing manager. And this local should know — as a teenager, she babysat some of the property’s younger residents.   

We explore the neoclassical interior, passing the columned entrance hall, before visiting the library, servants’ wing, nursery and bedrooms. I learn that Fota House has doubled as a location for many television productions — unsurprisingly, given its remarkable likeness to iconic properties like the Waldorf Astoria.

While the family members changed throughout the centuries, Catherine says the esteem they were held in by the community remained the same — helped by the fact that the estate employed up to 60 locals. Thanks in part to memories documented by former staff member Patricia Butler, many anecdotes from different eras continue to be shared.

Catherine reveals: “Mrs Kevin was a Scottish housekeeper in the mid-twentieth century who made servers whistle when in the kitchen to ensure they weren’t eating the food!” 

She mentions another amusing story in the drawing room. In the 19th century, it was improper for ladies to expose their necks — to allow them to enjoy the decorative ceilings here, then-matriarch Lady Barrymore cleverly installed large mirrors! But it isn’t just the ceilings that should be admired in Fota House — it also houses one of Ireland’s finest collections of landscape paintings. 

Like the late Dorothy Bell, who held annual fetes for the community, numerous events are organized here throughout the year. During my visit, they’re erecting an ice rink — at other times, there’s an outdoor theatre and cinema. There’s even a pollination trail for children to explore.

“The goal of the Irish Heritage Trust is to preserve historic buildings like Fota House so everyone can enjoy them,” Catherine explains. “People love stepping back in time or rambling around the grounds.”

As we explore these grounds, which include a Victorian Walled Garden and Orangerie, Catherine reveals the definition of Fota is ‘fodh teith’ — the Gaelic term for ‘warm sod’. 

“The soil here is five degrees warmer than elsewhere,” she adds — as a result, these conditions, along with the sheltered harbor, allow the cultivation of certain trees and exotic plants.

Into the wild

Another unique element on the island is the wildlife park — one of Ireland’s most visited attractions. I’m not alone in making an appearance here this week — days before my visit, there was great excitement thanks to the arrival of a baby Indian rhino — the first birth of its kind in Ireland.

“We’re allowing the public to choose his name on our website,” says Marketing Manager Róisín FitzGerald as we navigate the 100 acres in a ranger’s buggy while admiring giraffes, lions, wallabies and sloths. We also glimpse the newborn, even though his protective mother shields him from curious onlookers. 

“Overall, we have 135 species and 1,300 animals,” explains Róisín, who originally hails from Cahir in County Tipperary — there, she developed a love of animals on her parents’ farm. “We’re an open-air facility, which gives our diverse inhabitants freedom to roam about. Our visitors tell us that memories of their time here last a lifetime.”

In fact, my first time in Fota Island over 30 years ago was specifically to visit this wildlife park — and, as Róisín mentioned, those vivid memories remain with me. 

The park was established as an alternative to Dublin Zoo — which had, by the 1980s, reached maximum development. The project became a collaboration between the Zoological Society of Ireland and University College Cork, who’d offered the land free of charge under a license agreement.

Primarily funded by donations, Fota Wildlife Park opened in 1983 — since then, much has changed, including the addition of the Asian Sanctuary, home to Sumatran tigers and lion-tailed macaques. 2019 saw the opening of the Madagascar Village, which is overrun with delightfully mischievous ring-tailed lemurs.

“Education, research and conservation — as well as protecting and breeding endangered and vulnerable wildlife like European bison and Scimitar-horned Oryx — are all integral to our work,” Róisín reveals. She adds that the park connects with animal lovers worldwide through its website and social media platforms.

A room with a view

For the duration of my stay, I’m a guest of the latest of the island’s trio of attractions — the five-star Fota Island Resort . Since opening in 2006, this elegant establishment has been a popular choice for weddings, food lovers and those wanting to unwind in their award-winning spa.

On my arrival, I drive through the wooded grounds and spot guests enjoying many onsite facilities, including fairy trails and Fota Adventure, which offers activities like archery, kayaking and orienteering.

While entering the reception area — cosy, lavishly furnished and, thanks to the wooden beams crossing the ceiling, resemblant to an Alpine lodge — I notice golfers weighed down by bags. Their appearance is unsurprising as the resort’s championship courses have hosted prestigious tournaments, including the Irish Open.

As you’d expect from an establishment of this standing, the staff are welcoming and cheery — a perfect reflection of the warmth that’s so evident throughout County Cork.  

In addition to self-catering lodges, the resort offers 131 en-suite rooms and eight luxurious suites — my choice for my stay. Spacious, relaxing and equipped with woodland views, this suite would perfectly suit those celebrating landmark occasions.

A highlight here is undoubtedly their specialty restaurant, The Cove. The menus created by Head Chef Maris Urbanovics reflect his love of nature, foraging and ancestral flavors. The eight courses, which include oysters, monkfish and venison, leave all my senses in a swoon and are complemented by drink pairings chosen by the restaurant manager and experienced sommelier, Jarek Tusz.

“Our produce comes from suppliers in the surrounding area like Ballycotton, Shanagarry and Ballyhoura,” says General Manager John O’Flynn. “We’re incredibly proud that our chefs across all our restaurants use local suppliers — which, in this post-pandemic world, is more important than ever.”

When I quiz him about what makes his job special, John, who hails from nearby Glenmore, references his delight at welcoming different generations and witnessing the connections formed in the hotel. 

Next stop, America!

Beyond Fota Island, East Cork offers many attractions for visitors, including the cookery school at Ballymaloe as well as Spike Island — the former monastery, fort and prison. 

A brief drive from Fota Island is Cobh, accurately described by Condé Nast Traveller as “one of the most beautiful small towns in Europe”. Famed for its candy-colored buildings, Victorian flourishes and promenade dedicated to John F. Kennedy, this port was the final stop on the Titanic’s ill-fated journey in 1912.

Dr Michael Martin — a navy veteran who runs specialized tours — lists the reasons Cobh became a prominent European harbor, including its location, defensive qualities, size and depth of its waters. 

“It was a safe haven for ships,” he says, adding that in the wake of the Famine, Irish people emigrating to America could easily reach the port by the newly built railroad. 

Amongst the tributes to this era across Cobh — formerly known as Queenstown — is a statue of Annie Moore outside the beautiful and immersive Cobh Heritage Centre. In 1892, she was the first immigrant to pass the newly opened federal immigration inspection at Ellis Island Station. The song, Isle of Tears, celebrates her story.

Discussing the Titanic — which is documented in the historic White Star Line Building — Michael argues that Hollywood has ​romanticized the story.

​​“​Was the Titanic​ the biggest​ ship at the time? ​N​o​. Were locals​ clamoring to see it? Also, no. For them, it was just another immigrant ship, nothing special — one of hundreds.”

He continues: “The people of Cobh were more devasted by the sinking of the Lusitania three years later, after being torpedoed by a German U-boat off the coast of Kinsale. 1,198 passengers and crew were killed — many locals were involved in rescuing passengers and recovering bodies.” 

Their heroic efforts are commemorated by the bronze Angel of Peace statue depicting an angel and two of these fishermen. 

Elsewhere, ​Cobh is a town of superlatives. The Royal Cork Yacht Club is the world’s oldest, St Colman’s neo-Gothic cathedral is Ireland’s highest, while local athlete Sonia O’Sullivan, immortalized in statue form, is arguably one of sport’s greatest.

Before leaving East Cork, I wet my whistle in Midleton’s Jameson Distillery, currently embarking on an exciting upgrade ahead of the whiskey’s 200th anniversary in 2025.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see how this iconic drink is created,” says my guide Joe Treacy about the world’s best-selling Irish whiskey.

While the potent tipple was founded in Dublin in the 18th century by Scottish lawyer John Jameson, in 1966, following some turbulent years, the company merged with Cork Distillers and John Powers to form the Irish Distillers Group. 10 years later, Jameson’s entire distilling process was relocated here.

“In addition to having the facilities, space and skilled workers, we are close to Cork Harbour and have the Dung River and barley on our doorstep,” Joe says.

Formerly a woolen mill and Napoleonic barracks, this sprawling site, with its red-bricked chimneys, has many points of interest — notably their pot still, officially the largest of its kind, according to the Guinness Book of Records.

It seems East Cork needs a long, wide and sturdy mantlepiece to hold all its many awards.

Although West Cork tends to get a lot of the attention, there are plenty of things to do in East Cork that make it well worth a visit.

East Cork stretches from Cork City all the way out to the seaside town of Youghal and it encompasses some of the most historic of the many Cork attractions ).

From historic castles and lighthouses to the vibrant town of Cobh and the home of Jameson whiskey at Midleton, you could easily spend a week touring around East Cork.

In the guide below, you’ll discover lots of things to do in East Cork to keep you busy during your visit in 2024.

1. Take a boat out to Spike Island

You can discover 1,300 years of Irish history by taking a boat trip out to Spike Island . The 104-acre island in Cork Harbour has been voted one of the leading tourist attractions in all of Europe, so you know it’s definitely worth a visit.

The island is home to a 200-year-old fortress that was later turned into the largest prison in the world in the 1850s. It’s no surprise that it’s often nicknamed the Alcatraz of Ireland. 

You can tour the fort, enter the famous prison block, walk through the tunnels to the military defense guns and explore further to the beaches and grasslands around the island.

2. And then grab lunch in the supposedly haunted Commodore Hotel

Although there are  plenty of restaurants in Cobh , few are located in a building with as much history as the Commodore.

This hotel was built in 1854 overlooking Cork Harbour. Their elegant restaurant is decorated in an old-world style and their nautical-themed bar often features live music. 

However, lunch here can be quite a unique experience with ghost sightings, sudden drops in temperature and eerie cries of a baby coming from upstairs.

The old hotel has been considered haunted ever since it was used as a hospital and morgue for the wounded victims of World War I.

3. Spend an afternoon at the Jameson Experience

Spending an afternoon at the Midleton Distillery is one of the best things to do in East Cork when its pouring down.

Grab a group of friends and you can enjoy an in-depth tour of the Old Midleton Distillery, along with tastings of course.

While the original Jameson operation was in Dublin for 200 years, they shifted the distillery to Midleton in Cork in 1975.

The expanding whiskey distillery and museum is set on 15 acres and guided tours take you behind the scenes to understand the field-to-glass process.

4. Visit Fota Wildlife Park

The whole family will love Fota Wildlife Park . This 100-acre park area on Fota Island originally opened in 1983 and is an independently funded and not-for-profit charity and conservation effort.

The park is home to a variety of animal and plant species including Sumatran Tigers, White-tailed Sea Eagles, Asiatic Lions, Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Howler Monkeys and much more.

The wildlife park is a walking park, where you can follow the paths to different enclosures and sections on foot. There are also guided tours available and educational programs for the whole family to enjoy. 

If you’re on the lookout for things to do in East Cork with kids, you can’t go wrong with an afternoon at Fota.

5. Take a River Blackwater cruise

River Blackwater flows through three counties of Ireland to the sea at Youghal in East Cork. A unique way to explore this part of the county is on a river cruise which leaves from Youghal jetty and travels north up the river.

A 28ft former fishing boat is the ferry in action for this cruise and is captained by Tony Gallagher.

The 90-minute trip allows you to take in a number of sights including the remains of Templemichael Castle, Molana Abbey and unspoilt natural environments.

Now that we have our favourite things to do in East Cork out of the way, it’s time to tackle some other popular places to visit.

Below, you’ll find everything from the brilliant Ballycotton Cliff Walk and St. Coleman’s Cathedral to a clatter of hidden gems. 

1. The Ballycotton Cliff Walk

The Ballycotton Cliff Walk is arguably one of the best things to do in East Cork. The walking trail stretches from Ballycotton to Ballytrasna and then onto Ballyandreen.

The 7km return walk should take around 2-3 hours depending on your pace, but the effort is incredibly rewarding. 

It offers a spectacular view over the Cork coastline with the rugged, pristine beauty of the Atlantic Ocean meeting the rolling green hills. There’s plenty of room to park your car at the start of the walk in Ballycotton.

2. Spend a rainy day at Youghal Clock Gate Tower

A perfect place to head on a rainy day is the fascinating Youghal Clock Gate Tower . You can’t miss this 24-metre-high tower, being the most visible landmark in the middle of town. It’s linked to 700 years of history and is open for visitors to explore.

It’s been used as a time keeper, jail and trade centre over the years. You can join a guided tour through the levels which culminates in a magnificent panoramic view over Youghal bay and town, as well as, into Waterford County. 

3. Visit the Titanic Experience in Cobh

The story of the Titanic has captivated people for generations and this tour experience in Cobh is one of the most highly reviewed things to do in East Cork.

The Titanic arrived in Cobh on the 11th April 1912 where the last passengers boarded the iconic ship before its fatal departure.

The Titanic Experience Cobh takes place inside the original White Star Line Ticket Office and retraces the steps of the over 100 people who boarded the Titanic from Cobh.

It offers an insight into what exactly happened on the ship’s maiden voyage that has been the subject of films, documentaries and books ever since. 

4. And then mosey up to Spy Hill to see the Deck of Cards

You’ve likely seen the famous image of colourful houses in Cobh, known as the Deck of Cards . For many visitors to the whimsical town, this is the photo you need to get during your visit.

The row of colourful houses is perfectly placed with the impressive St Colman’s Cathedral as the backdrop. 

To get the iconic photo and view, you need to get yourself up to Spy Hill which offers plenty of street parking. From there you’ll need to head towards the colourful houses along the stone wall from where you’ll find the perfect viewpoint. 

5. Step back in time at Barryscourt Castle

This late 15th century castle lies south of Carrigtwohill town in East Cork, just a 15-minute drive from Cork City. It’s one of the finest examples of a restored Irish Tower House and was once the seat of the Anglo-Norman Barry family. 

The castle has been carefully restored in its original form and a visit here can easily take you back in time as you imagine what life was like for the family.

The rooms of the castle and newly developed garden are open to be explored and is a popular place to visit along with a trip to nearby Fota Wildlife Park.

6. Take a spin out to the Ballycotton Lighthouse

A trip over to explore the Ballycotton Lighthouse is a great day out in East Cork. The lighthouse sits atop Ballycotton Island and was built in the late 1840s.

It’s one of only two black lighthouses in the country and is only accessible by boat (similar to Cork’s Fastnet Lighthouse near Cape Clear Island ).

Ballycotton Sea Adventures offer passenger ferries and guided tours of the lighthouse where you can not only learn more about its history but also enjoy the stunning views of the rugged coastline.

So, although East Cork begins at the outskirts of Cork City, a visit here is hard to beat, especially when it comes to things to do.

Try a visit to Youghal. Had a great time, using it as a base. Plenty of little beaches and fun places to find. If driving I advise hugging the coast and find some of the hidden gem of beaches. Goat Island is like a treasure island beach. Then lovely nights in the town. Plenty of food like Clancys and another one in the town that is seafood based but can't think of the name but delish. Then the rest of the night in a little pub called the Nook (or Treacys, It was confusing, does it have 2 names lol) that had the most amazing music. We ended every night there as it was such fun.

Cork, located in the south of Ireland, is a charming and vibrant city that offers a unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. Another must-see attraction in Cork is the English Market , a covered market that has been in operation since 1788. The market is a food lover’s paradise, offering a wide variety of fresh seafood, meats, cheeses, and baked goods. It’s also a great place to sample some traditional Irish dishes such as colcannon and boxty.

For those who love the outdoors, Cork is home to a number of beautiful parks and gardens. Fitzgerald Park is a popular spot for a leisurely stroll or a picnic, and it’s also home to the Cork Public Museum . The Cork Botanic Gardens and Cemetery are also worth a visit, while a shadow of its former self it still features a wide variety of plants and flowers from all over the world.

An East Cork café that was devastated by floods just a few days after opening last year is finally back in business.

The owners of Midleton sandwich bar Bernies are holding a grand reopening this week after suffering extensive damages during Storm Babet. It's all run by Jason Cobert and Linda O'Riordan - founders of much loved Cork café chain Bitesize - who launched their 'sister site' last October to give the Main Street a new hub for mid-range savoury snacks.

The venue is lovingly named after Jason's mother, and offers a range of top grub made from fresh local ingredients - as well as Bitesize's usual selection of delicious coffees. The owners also hinted at plans to switch its menu to tapas and Roman-styled pizza a few evenings a week once things got up and running.

Workers teased they were opening their doors last month with a gas Staff Wanted poster asking for 'Dawn Patrol Wizards' , and hundreds of locals have already flocked to the venue to support them during the relaunch. Keeping with the classic Bitesize humour, Jason and Linda have put up a sign outside their main entrance marking the occasion, which reads: "Come in and buy a sandwich, we have spent a fortune on this place... twice!"

This reopening comes as the Midleton Chamber of Commerce plans a town relaunch to encourage more businesses and entrepreneurs to invest in the area. The event takes place on April 11th at JJ Coppinger's and is aimed at "steering the conversation away from the challenges Midleton has faced and instead highlighting the town as a vibrant and resilient community."

The launch will also come with a new website and overall brand for the town, highlighting efforts from local business businesses in recovering from last year's extensive storm damage. Bernies are the latest Midleton business to reopen after the floods, after the nearby Greenway café - which spent well over €100,000 in repairs - was finally able to reopen its doors in March.

Shop owners Deirdre Roberts and Fiona O'Driscoll feared they'd never open their store again. But after months of hard work from staff and countless volunteers, they finally relaunched with a brand new layout and selection of goodies on 7 March - the same day that the first stretch of the Midleton-Youghal Greenway opened.

Clothes stores and other restaurants have also bounced back in recent months - but locals have also expressed concerns that the terrible floods could happen again. Even with some new storm-proof upgrades, one owner said they 'feel like sitting ducks' until appropriate relief schemes are put in place.

Pedestrian (40s) dies in road traffic incident in Cork

A pedestrian (40s) has died after a road traffic incident in Midleton, Co Cork. The incident occurred on the N25 eastbound at Water Rock in Midleton at about 1.30am on Sunday morning, when the man was hit by a car. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. No other serious injuries were reported.

The road is closed and the services of forensic collision investigators has been requested. Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dashcam) and were travelling on the N25 Eastbound between 1:15am and 1:30am are asked to make the footage available to Gardaí.
